Bruney throws another inning
-

Brian Bruney started and threw an inning for AAA Scranton tonight. He walked one.
Joe Girardi said before the game that Bruney has been around 93-94 with his fastball and they’d like to see him around 95-96 before bringing him back. No idea what he was hitting tonight on the gun.
The Yankees will have a decision to make once Bruney is ready. Dave Robertson (13 Ks in 10 innings) isn’t going anywhere, or at least he shouldn’t be. Neither are Jose Veras or Edwar Ramirez. It would be either LaTroy Hawkins or Dan Giese.

I don’t see it being Dan, you gives you versatility, he can go a few innings. Hawk is a mop up guy. Hopefully they could trade him.
Yes, but 5 minutes later, Bruney told a reporter that the Yankees told him that they only needed to see him hitting 94-95 on his fastball before bringing him back. What is the real story??!?!
Goodbye LaTroy.
Should be Hawkins. Giese has thrived as a long man
This shouldn’t be a hard thing to do.Giese and Latroy are bad.And Edwar gonna have 80 K in 50 innings but still will have a 6 Era.
Replace Giese and LaTroy with Bruney and Melchon.
Try to get something for hawkins first.
I would vote Hawkins off the island
“And Edwar gonna have 80 K in 50 innings but still will have a 6 Era.
Replace Giese and LaTroy with Bruney and Melchon.”
edwar is gonna have a 6 era?…hmmm interesting…and who is this Melchon guy?…i know Mark Melancon but never heard of this Melchon character
5 votes for Hawk.
Giese is bad? Besides his start against the Mets, he has not had one bad outing! Getting rid of the game against the Mets, he has given up 11 hits, 3 bb, 1 er in 19.1 inning. Absolutely deplorable stats right there.
Andy Phillips playing for the Reds, up with one on and 2 out.
It should be Hawk going down but it will be Giese – After all – Hawk was trusted with the all-important 9th inning in a game with a 6 run lead.
Seems like that is worth $3M to me.
Giese has been great and we need a long man, especially with Ponson and Rasner who are iffy at best. I think its high time to DFA Hawkins or try to deal him for anything. IMO Veras, Ramirez and Robertson are established members of this team. They have all been very good.
Bye Bye LaTroy
I don’t see Cashman releasing Hawkins and his $3.75 million owed to him.
Sadly, I bet Veras gets sent down after his past 2 shaky outings.
Patrick â„¢-
so what’s up with the twins not bumping livan for liriano.
he’s ready.
as yankee fans on the blog like to say,” he has nothing further to prove at triple a”.
if he was yankee, he would have been pitching in the bigs weeks ago.
Melchon?
Geeez.
I hadn’t even given a thought to Brian Bruney recently.
But it sure seems like the Yankees have some extraordinary options these days with regard to RH relief. I mean, they’ve got Farnsworth, Bruney, Veras, Melancon, Cox, Robertson, and Ramirez, as well as Ohlendorf.
It also seems like Dan Giese hasn’t pitched in quite a while. That usually means a team considers the guy pretty expendable. And LaTroy Hawkins is getting paid much more than Giese.
You’ve gotta think, with all these RH relievers, that the Yanks will be making some kind of trade soon, involving one, or more, of these guys.
Humberto Sanchez got hit a bit in another GC outing today. Kennedy had a nice outing following Bruney in Scranton – 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. 89 pitches. Action Jackson is heating up in Trenton (hitting .290, now 9 HR), as is Miranda in Scranton (almost .300, hit a few HR’s lately). Phil Coke is really coming on in Trenton too – pitching tonight, but had a stellar outing his last start with 11 K’s – and he’s a lefty. Mayvbe our lefty RP in the future (or another Sean Henn). But he’s a free agent after this season, so gotta get him back.
veras just choked today.
sometimes you have to experience choking a few times to get over it.
once you realize the sun rises and the world doesn’t end, it’s easier the next time.
They keep using Melancon in 3 inning stints in Trenton – I’m not convinced we’ll see him this season. He’s doing fine, but he’s not being pushed, and the pen hasn’t been the problem.
“Try to get something for hawkins first.”
i think nick in sf has one of those moose bars left.
randy –
you saw liriano filed a grievance with the league to get promoted from aaa to the bigs.
I wonder who he thinks he should replace in that power rotation in minniehaha?
Does Jason Jones have any shot at being up in the majors if not this year next year?
“you saw liriano filed a grievance with the league to get promoted from aaa to the bigs.”
it is strange they are keeping him down there.
talk about an ace up your sleeve.
randy that is way too much to give up.
Everyone, including Jose Veras, is allowed to have a bad inning once in a while.
randy- It has to do with time of service and arbitration. Not sure exactly of the details though.
“Sadly, I bet Veras gets sent down after his past 2 shaky outings”
i did not just read this right??…this is a joke…right?
The team DOES seem to be losing faith in Hawkins though. As a matter of fact, he was gonna be the last guy used out of the pen today. I believe Giese was warming up when it ended. And he barely pitched at all last month.
I hope they keep Giese. Not only does he have a better ERA (2.70) than Hawkins (5.63), he’s also more versatile and able to pitch several innings at a time, if needed.
“I don’t see Cashman releasing Hawkins and his $3.75 million owed to him.”
At this point, it’s less than half of that. He’s already been paid for the time he’s spent. They’ve been shopping him aggressively for over a month, no one’s bitten. He will hopefully be released. Maybe they can hit Duch around a bunch tomorrow, let LaTroy mop up the last couple innings and then send him off with a handshake and a thank you.
randy,
Yeah its pretty odd that he’s not with the Twins. Maybe they are trying to save money. Maybe they are just being super conservative with him. I don’t know if its a good thing to say if he were with the Yankees he’d already get called up. I think Cashman has made several mistakes in calling guys up too soon (Hughes, Kennedy).
Anyone watching the mets game? Who said Beltran is a great cf’er? He isn’t even good. Two awful plays in the outfield.d
Even if Giese gets sent down, they’ll be able to bring him back when the rosters expand in September, if not sooner.
I’d still hate to see him go, though
Check out the poll on espn.com Asked what roll do you think Lirano’s arbitration eligibility is playing in the twins not recalling him?
significant
small
no role
Surprisingly Minni and states around there said no role. You’d think they’d learn by now that their ownership is more concerned with saving money than winning.
I have 1.75 Moose Bars left and I’m not giving one up for Hawkins. I can’t buy more until the weather cools down unless I want to pay $$$ for dry-ice shipping.
Sorry, Hawk.
jennifer-watching the game and saw that.
The Mets also seem to have a problem with RISP tonight
I’m watching the Mets and Reds as well. The Mets just left the bases loaded with Wright and Beltran getting called on strikes looking. Made me feel a little better about the Yankees RISP non-hitting.
“I think Cashman has made several mistakes in calling guys up too soon (Hughes, Kennedy).”
It’s funny. Pundits last year were calling for Cashman to be more aggressive promoting Hughes to the bigs instead of signing “veteran replacements”. Let him learn on the job, they said. People said the same thing about Horne this year, when he was healthy. That Cash was gunshy now about promoting young pitchers and he shouldn’t be.
It’s never “well, it was the right decision and it didn’t work out.” If it works, it was the right call. If it doesn’t, it was the wrong call. That bugs me. Something can be the right decision and still not work out.
Would keeping Liriano down in the minors like this be enough to push the end of his arbitration years a whole year back?
If the rumors about Cash talking to the Pirates about Bay/Nady, and Damaso Marte are true, then somebody of quality will be going to Pittsburgh. Don’t expect LaTroy Hawkins to get it done. Whether it’s Jose Veras, Ross Ohlendorf, or someone else, one or more of our good RH pitchers is going.
Unless Veras implodes several times he’s here to stay, and stay for a long time…..
Either Moeller or Hawkins. The Better question is Gardner or Christian?
“It’s never “well, it was the right decision and it didn’t work out.†If it works, it was the right call. If it doesn’t, it was the wrong call. That bugs me. Something can be the right decision and still not work out.”
whozat – Truer words were never spoken.
Any chance they go with a 13 man bullpen when Bruney comes back and get rid of Moeller? Christian will probably be optioned for Damon
“Would keeping Liriano down in the minors like this be enough to push the end of his arbitration years a whole year back?”
Apparently. There’s a cutoff point in service time…like, 2.7 years is the line (or something), so if you can keep him to 2.69, you delay things by a year.
“then somebody of quality will be going to Pittsburgh. Don’t expect LaTroy Hawkins to get it done. Whether it’s Jose Veras, Ross Ohlendorf, or someone else, one or more of our good RH pitchers is going.”
A lot more quality than that will be going.
After reading the Baseball Prospectus trade stuff, I’m on the Holliday train. Talent evaluators apparently think he can play RF, while Bay’s a disaster in the field. So Holliday fills a need going forward as well. He can be the RFer for the next several years. If they can hang on to Jackson, Hughes, Melancon and Montero and get Holliday, that’d be incredible. Dunno if they can, though.
“Any chance they go with a 13 man bullpen when Bruney comes back and get rid of Moeller?”
Why? Hawkins isn’t doing anything for us. At least there’s sort of a reason for Moeller to be here.
Reds breaking it open against the Mets.
” It would be either LaTroy Hawkins or Dan Giese “…whatever MORON or collection of MORONS would agree to keep Hawkins over Giese should be checked for physical evidence of a recent lobotomy. Hawkins has done NOTHING to warrant even being on the roster this long !
“Why? Hawkins isn’t doing anything for us. At least there’s sort of a reason for Moeller to be here.”
I agree 100%…I would love to see Hawkins go
I was saying if they weren’t gonna release Hawkins, I’d still like them to keep Giese
and they had a 13 man pen before, until traber went down for sexson
Blargh
Must be, that is why his agents have filed paperwork with mlb.
LaToya better leave…whether Bruney comes back or not.
Molina banged up his knee, so maybe we see Moller tomorrow. After the spectacle Posada put on today, no way Moller gets released.
Giese is a keeper… he is the long man we’ve been looking for. He can eat up 3-4 innings out of the pen for you and be an emergency starter.
Hawkins is the only logical choice.
Holliday would be a coup type of pickup for the Yanks….Some people harp about his numbers away from Coors….I say BS to that, the dude’s a solid A type ballplayer…..Make the deal Whozat, pull the damn trigger…..
I guess we don’t have to worry about Street tomorrow!
From mlbtraderumors -
Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt thinks Oakland closer Huston Street is Milwaukee-bound. He says the word on the street is outfielder Darren Ford, 22, is the price. Ford was pulled from Brevard County’s lineup before its game against Clearwater. Says Haudricourt:
The fact that Ford was pulled from the lineup makes me believe something could be up. He has no injury that I know of.
We don’t know exactly when Bruney is coming back either. Things may change by then
Please exile Hawkins. His arrow is pointing toward San Diego or some other sub-.500 team.
“Something can be the right decision and still not work out.”
or equally it could be said that something can be the wrong decision and still work out.
that would be, in my opinion, rushing joba’s transition by a few weeks too early. but that’s worked out with no problems.
i flipped out on the blog when hughes was called up.
i said right from the beginning he was being set up for injuries.
the thing about making decisions like when to bring a oitcher up is it’s better to err on the safe side than err on the risky side because there’s no real downside to taking longer.
the yankee are invested in developing and bringing up young pitching. i think they are learning how to do this on the fly.
hopefully lessons will be learned and they’ll be more patient in the future.
there’s really too much at stake not to be more patient.
“that would be, in my opinion, rushing joba’s transition by a few weeks too early. but that’s worked out with no problems.”
Since when was Joba’s transition rushed? He’s got what, about 13 starts left? That puts him right on track for his innings cap.
“i flipped out on the blog when hughes was called up. ”
Well, that was undeniably forced by injuries. They weren’t really left with much of a choice.
does anyone know when was the last time our best player got a hit in a big spot and won a ball game for the Yankees?
I remember Randy 1 questioning the callup of Hughes very clearly….I was for the callup providing they handled him with great care….Then on his 2nd outing ( the no-hitter in Texas ) Randy’s concerns were realized…..However as I stated earlier, he’s lerned a great deal and has matured by these setbacks….Adversity can make you, or more often than not break you…..
My guess is they are not, we’ve spoken about this for some time Nady and Bay are ok but nothing ground breaking about either one of them I certainly wouldn’t part w/ Tabata or Jackson..if it’s Ohlendorfh and Kennedy plus Curtis then yeh do it other than that the Juvenile Delinquent stays and so does Ajack. It’s amazing how people think they are giving up on a 19 yr. old w/ Tabata’s ability or a 21 yr. old w/ Jackson’s ability especially for Bay or Nady ? com’on…
Meanwhile who ever would have thought our pitching was lights out today 18 SO to 4 BB over 12 innings, remember early this season how we watched Boston in Camden yards thier pitching extended the game well that what our pitching did today. My hats off to Joba, Farnsy(yeh I’m still shocked w/ him), Mo, Edwar, D-Rob they extended this game and made sure Oakland didn’t blow it open.
Also props to Bet and Robi (those 2 dug deep to extend the game)
How was Joba’s transition done “a few weeks too early”? Unless you’re worried about his innings cap on the back end, what’s the problem?
Once the decision was made to transition him while keeping him on the big club, what does it matter whether it started in May or in June?
“Holliday would be a coup type of pickup for the Yanks….Some people harp about his numbers away from Coors….I say BS to that, the dude’s a solid A type ballplayer…..Make the deal Whozat, pull the damn trigger…..”
———————————————————-
So what, you want us simply to ignor the fact that OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS, Holliday’s OPS is almost 300 pts higher at Coors then on the road?
300 Points
300 Points
300 POINTS
Thart’s the kind of GM you are? To ignor 4 1/2 years of Data? Yes, Holliday is a very good player. But Coors makes him look MUCH better then what he really is.
what is Tabata and Jackson hitting in the minors?
what is Tabata and Jackson hitting in the minors?
Tabata had an up and down type year, Jackson has adjusted to AA you can look up thier stats on milb.com.. but for Bay or Nady I’m sorry that price tag is something I’m not in favor of.
wonder if the A’s would take Gardner for Street.
“.Adversity can make you, or more often than not break you…..”
i would go along with that and maybe that’s where all the differences of opinions we have here meet in the middle.
a lot of this is trial and error. as long as there’s not career ending abuse, and there’s not, then if the team sticks to the plan eventually there should be a surplus of pitching.
i’m not saying don’t go with young pitching . i’m saying be careful with young pitching. don’t expect so much so fast. look at bucholz. he’s already thrown a no hitter yet he’s a work in progress.
nick in sf-
i would have liked to have seen joba make a few starts at triple a. his first starts weren’t really starts.
wonder if the A’s would take Gardner for Street.
We sort of don’t need him don’t you think ? I mean the BP is the rock right now.
Anyone sort our pitchers by batting average against? I was really surprised to see our top 8 (all .200 or under) are:
Britton
Rivera
Ramirez
Bruney
Giese
Patterson
Robertson
But guess who is BETTER than Moose and Andy?
Farnsworth
Hawkins
Traber
Kennedy!
These last three really surprised me.
Oldyanksfan…..You must be a Yale Math major who spends hours pouring over countless stats….They said the same crap about Todd Helton ……I’d gladly take my chances with a 28 year RH hand hitting slugging OF…..By the way, what was The Babe’s OPS away from the Bronx, or Gehrig’s away from the Bronx…Save it…..
Anyone know the rotation after Andy?
Actually the yankees are incredibly lucky they transitioned Joba when they did. When Wang went down, Joba (not Ponson) stepped in his place, and Ponson took the five spot.
It seems to have worked well enough.
Jackson 4 for 6 in a doubleheader tonight w/ a 2B, a HR, a BB and a SB, 3 runs scored, up to .296. Tabata out with a hammy.
Jackson is hitting like 280 ish, Tabata is hitting 248 at AA, but they are 20 and 21 years old
Could always use a hudson street.
“i would have liked to have seen joba make a few starts at triple a. his first starts weren’t really starts.”
So your complaint is with the method of the transition, not the timing, as you previously stated.
Wouldn’t they still have had to stretch Joba out before giving him a few starts? The end result would have been less Joba on the big club when more Joba was needed. Or was it your wish that the void would have been filled by a veteran gritty gamer?
Since July 07 he’s batting over .500
Randy, I didn’t see anything wrong with how Joba got stretched out. A lot of baseball commentators said they were wrong with the whole thing. The few that still say “he should have stayed in the same role he started the season” are those who will never admit they were wrong.
The Yankees had Giese to back him up and sort of split the starts with him, it allowed Giese to get his chance to start as well.
The biggest problem this year was counting overly heavily on the young arms to fill out the rotation. It can and has been done, but its a big risk. Cashman didn’t have a good backup plan once the original one failed.
whozat-
on joba it wasn’t the innings cap i was concerned about. it was the sudden shift to starting without much of a base layed down. as i said before , i think it’s better to err on the safe side. i think it was an abrupt shift in gears to do what he did at the mlb level. a few starts at triple a would have been less stressful.
but all’s well that ends well. he hasn’t had any problems so great.
what about brian cashman and the yankees makes you think they’re going to let hawkins go, no matter how valuable he isn’t to the team? these are the people who brought you carl pavano, kei igawa, and a stubborn insistence that hughes and kennedy would be major contributors to the rotation this season. my guess is veras gets sent down.
Jackson 4 for 6 in a doubleheader tonight w/ a 2B, a HR, a BB and a SB, 3 runs scored, up to .296. Tabata out with a hammy.
Austin is in his first full season in AA and adjusting at a rapid rate. Tabata again he started to pull w/ power before that hammy injury, I wouldn’t deal him at his lowest value. Can you imagine how stupid Cashman would look if he progresses to a 20 HR 100 RBI (this kid has the stone cold assasin approach, everytime he plays Boston’s AA he lights up the scoreboard.. in Portland’s home he drove a straight line drive to LCF about 408 feet of the Dunkin Donuts netting ..) yeh that deliquent stays.
If Veras gets sent down and Hawkins remains, there will be open mutiny on the LoHud Yankee blog! Then we’ll all watch the games anyway.
Nick, if that happens I might have to start calling for heads, and I don’t do that very often
I’m really impressed by the nut job Milton Bradley if all it would take is JB Cox/Ian Kennedy I’d be tempted.
Kindly ignore my earlier post about Street (or continue you previous ignoratude)
“9:31pm: An update from Haudricourt. He believes the Brewers are working on a smaller deal for Jack Taschner or Ray Durham, rather than Street.
Haudricourt says the Brewers scouted Street but the scouts were not impressed. He’s not coming to Milwaukee.”
Yep, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Horne, Marquez and Karstens get injured, that’s numbers 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 starters get injured and there is no backup plan. Oh that Cashman doesn’t have a plan in place. Bad Cashman, bad/
Farnsy, Sexson, AND Bradley? –
At least we would win all the fights (unless Bradley gets thrown down by his manager and busts his knee again)
randy, there was blenty base laid down, the guy was a starting pitcher who did a little high-profile work out of the bullpen. As for the handling of the shift at the major league level, clearly the brain trust thought he had the makeup to handle it and they were right.
It’s really gone far better than anyone could have reasonably hoped for. Not perfectly, but very, very well.
Kudos to Cashman for having to brains and guts to handle it the way he did.
I want to see some out of the box move… Jeff Keppinger should be atleast talked about in the Yankees deadline plans, Casey Blake should be another..he’s crazy but Milton Bradley .367/.487/.783 when the game is tied plus his OF defense should be discussed. Jarred Washburn as a #5 SP fill in a cheap acquisiton. Lets get some movement here.
“The end result would have been less Joba on the big club when more Joba was needed. ”
nick in sf-
yeah, that’s what i would have liked. ironically i’m saying be more careful with the kid pitchers than most who are in favor of going with young pitching. one thing i have is some experience catching young pitchers. i caught jack armstrong the winter before he started the national league all star game most mornings at the pirates spring training facility and in the evening i caught terry gilmore over at the white sox spring training facility and he made the triple a all star team that summer.
stretching out a pitcher safely is a slow process.
it’s really almost boring it’s so slow. if you go too fast you actually slow the process down. there’s a lot of difference of opinion because every pitcher is unique. i think it’s especially dangerous to rush pitchers in the spring when the weather is erratic and cold. i would like to see all young pitchers stay at triple a until the weather heats up just for that reason alone.
Are we fielding a baseball team or the first ever professional team in MMA?
Jack Armstrong…..Very impressive…..How hard did he throw Randy …..
Kudos to Cashman for thinking by now Hughes,Kennedy and Joba will anchor the starting staff. That blew up in he’s face.
And what do we do of Hughes he can’t even start next season in the bigs.
Cashman wanted to get real young and win. That ain’t happening.
“Kudos to Cashman for having to brains and guts to handle it the way he did.”
can’t argue with you on this one because it worked out.
i still would have went slower, and i think the yankees should with most young pitchers. joba is a horse. he’s probably the exception to the rule.
So we’re all in agreement on the kudos to Cashman. That’s good.
If Hughes can’t start next season for some reason, someone else will.
Ofcourse we’ll always have the daily rip Phil Hughes posters they just always are lying around somewhere.
I’ll give more Kudos when Cashman can trade overrated Kennedy for something good.He should like Melky been traded when he’s stock was high.Same goes with Tabatha.
I definitely wouldn’t trade Tabata, he has the upside that would make a discussion last for 10 yrs.
Tabatha Stevens?
Tabatha Stevens?
Our Juvenile Delinquent
Jose Tabata
posters forgot to say Austin Jackson’s HR was the GW in the 7th inning in a 7 inning make up game
pat m.
high nineties, but it was very straight, but he located it really well. actually easy to catch. really hard worker and thoroughbred athlete.
the funny thing that happened with him was one day tony cloninger , the pitching coach, showed armstrong how to throw a split finger fastball and the first time he threw it to me the bottom just dropped out of it and bounced in front of the plate after looking like it was going to be a low strike .. he threw it again and the same thing happened. both totally unhittable pitches if a batter was up.
armstrong looked at tony and said” i can’t throw that pitch, it moves too much”.
true story.
i just lucked out getting that bullpen catcher job. i lied about my expereince. i had only caught about thirty games in my life up to that point. but it lead to a lot of other things. as you know playing a little( and i wasn’t even playing) doesn’t make you right, but it does give you some perspective on things.
in my opinion, terry gilmore was the more advanced pitcher that winter. his problem was that he threw 5 pitches for strikes , but his fastball was only 87-88. kind of how mussina is now.
Phil Coke went 6 IP w/ 10 K’s that’s 21 K’s in his last 2 starts, interesting
“So what, you want us simply to ignor the fact that OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS, Holliday’s OPS is almost 300 pts higher at Coors then on the road?”
Yes, this is true, and I’ve been concerned by it. However, there are people smarter than me out there who have done hard work figuring out how to account for park effects and the resulting bias they have on offense and pitching. When you run Holliday’s numbers through these tools, they provide a rough translation of what he’d be providing in Yankee stadium. It’s still really good. Not the Coors numbers. But, better than Matsui-style numbers, which is what his away splits were more like. And, BP says he can hold down RF. Certainly better than Abreu is this season. So…it’s a better option than I initially thought.
Tabatha Stevens?
Is that Jorge Tabasco and Ricky Saxony’s progeny?
Or something?
Wasn’t Bruney throwing around 97-98 MPH prior the injury. I remember he was pretty darn impressive in the spring.
If you have a good witch in your organization, you don’t trade her. The husbands are basically interchangeable, however.
“Phil Coke went 6 IP w/ 10 K’s that’s 21 K’s in his last 2 starts, interesting ”
Coke and Jones deserve to be at AAA. Curse you, Kei Igawa, and your rotation-filling self. I wish that someone was performing well enough at AAA to push Ponson/Rasner to be DFA’d or traded or moved to the pen.
Rebecca,
I think that’s the daughter from Bewitched.
Dellin Betances
6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB(1 IBB), 5 K’s
NIIIIIICE !
With prospects, only a few pan out. Joba has clearly worked out while Hughes and Kennedy still have a chance. They were rushed and Cashman should give Kennedy time at AAA while Hughes should spend this season and half of next season at AAA. To have three prospects together pan out is not goin to happen but Joba is an ace type with that shut down ability still developing although it is already showing. Give Hughes and Kennedy some time and they could still work out.
Coke and Jones deserve to be at AAA. Curse you, Kei Igawa, and your rotation-filling self. I wish that someone was performing well enough at AAA to push Ponson/Rasner to be DFA’d or traded or moved to the pen.
You also forgot Chase Wright before his injury.
Wait, Phil Coke is a lefty?
Someone said that I am shocked by a lefty that seems to not utterly suck at every aspect of pitching.
whozat,
If you had to keep one, who do you choose? Ponson or Rasner?
Our AAA squad needs to be figured out so some of our AA guys can be moved up. We have a logjam and Cashman is too scared to trade anyone and thus, each player is starting to lose value.
27 I’ll give Hughes the chance but Ian Kennedy needs to humble himself and start working hard instead of you know…he can talk the talk but it’s time he walks the walk, I can even tell Cash and the organization has lost alot of patience w/ him, in a way I said it since he was first sent down keep him down there until he works his way back into the radar don’t just give this kid a handout..he thinks he’s the sh… and needs a wakeup call.
Moboy(aka McLovin): http://hooked-on-phonics.com/
English. Please learn it.
it’s been a good day.
the yankees win. the red sox lose.
…and livan wins against all odds and lives to pitch another start.
at some point i’m going to have to be rooting against him if the twins stay in the hunt for the wild card. it’s really surprising they are in it after a 20 million payroll cut.
“Our AAA squad needs to be figured out so some of our AA guys can be moved up. We have a logjam and Cashman is too scared to trade anyone and thus, each player is starting to lose value.”
Yeah, Cashman’s just so damn scared to trade everyone. Because, you know, GMs are just knocking down the doors trying to make him good offers!
How DARE Cashman turn down that Horne for Sabathia offer from the Indians!
“We have a logjam and Cashman is too scared to trade anyone and thus, each player is starting to lose value.”
Given that Rasner and Ponson are 2/5 of our rotation in the bigs, can you blame him for seeing who steps up before the deadline?
Also…How exactly are McCutchen and Kennedy losing value? Coke and Jones…these aren’t amazing guys that are getting blocked. They’re decent. You don’t push to find a deal to dump a guy at AAA to make room for them.
I remember him starting the 1990 season on fire..Got the All-Star start and faded…Did win a ring with Lou ( and Paul O ) as they swept Oakland….Blow out his cuff didn’t he……I read were he has a kid that’s highly regarded…..Nevertheless, great expierence Randy…….As for Holliday, the guy can play and his game would elevate playing in the Yankee lineup…..If he can be had many would forget that Coors Field BS…..
“If you had to keep one, who do you choose? Ponson or Rasner?”
Hm. Rasner actually looked good early on. Wasn’t escaping jams every inning. Ponson has looked lucky in the starts that he’s done well. But, Ponson has better stuff. I dunno. If there’s any interest in either one and I have someone pushing up from AAA, I make that move. If it’s a push…I toss Ponson.
Humberto Sanchez
1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K’s, 1 HR
(other than the leadoff solo HR he gave up in the 2nd was solid.)
ughh Weems and C.Joseph who got his first pro ball HR today
COMPTON !
Christopher Smith 2 for 3 2 R, 2B, HBP
I take Ponson, he’s a major league pitcher vs. Rasner who’s a quadruple A pitcher.
Ponson seems to be open to making the suggested adjustments and taking reminders from the catchers.
Not that Rasner isn’t, but what kind of adjustments can he make? He is what he is. An innings eater.
Nevertheless, great expierence Randy…….As for Holliday, the guy can play and his game would elevate playing in the Yankee lineup
Dude his SLG % is 209 points lower away from Coors, did you see him at Shea, that’s what we would get not the ASG Holliday.
How nice of Phil Coke to put himself on the map by having 2 monster games, a week before the trading deadline….
Let’s hope Kennedy follows suits.
Holliday would be fine if he spent a few minutes in a humidor before every home start.
Ponson eats more than just innings.
cashman’s plan was a good one, except for the the fact that he completely overvalued his prospects.
other than that, it was rock solid.
if you base it purely on numbers, then latroy has to be the odd man out. the question is how much value do you put on experience and being veteran down the stretch.
do you really want a bullpen of giese, robertson, ramirez, veras in the playoffs
also, what happens when the yankees are ready to bring ohlendorf back to the pen?
Good one Nick in San Fran…..I’ll be at the Stick to see the Jets ( Oakland as well ) this upcoming season….Love eating in the North Beach area….I’m staying at The Parc 55….Maybe we can have a few cold ones at Lefty O’Douls one of my favorite joints in the City…Great hot sandwiches….
Ponson eats more than just innings.
He doesn’t eat he chugs
“do you really want a bullpen of giese, robertson, ramirez, veras in the playoffs”
Absolutely. Who cares if Hawkins is a veteran? What’s he going to teach the young players, how to give up at least one run every time they make an appearance? They already have the best possible veteran in the bullpen you can have, Rivera.
It’s time for him to go.
“do you really want a bullpen of giese, robertson, ramirez, veras in the playoffs”
Seems to be working okay so far.
also, what happens when the yankees are ready to bring ohlendorf back to the pen?
Expect him to get traded, I’d target Atlanta for Mike Gonzalez
If the Yankees are in the playoffs, that bullpen had an important part in getting to the playoffs.
Ponson would give Joey Chestnut a run for his money next July 4th.
PAT M., sounds good, maybe we’ll get a LuHud crew together.
Hey, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t 7 games above .500 our high water mark for the season? Tomorrow we can enter new territory, wouldn’t that be something?
DFox,
Surely you exaggerate. Mo’s given up more runs than Hawkins lately.
Of course, Mo’s not being used properly.
http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_gamebygamelog.jsp?c_id=mlb&playerID=115629&statType=2
Nick,
We’ve tried several times to reach 8 games over to no avail.
Can you believe that the Rays passed their franchise best 5 games over .500 over in the first month? (not sure if that’s exactly right, but something stupid rediculus like that)
Your smile for a night play of the day :p
mel, I hope you’re kidding… Hawkins was so awful that now he only comes in when other teams have been put away, which isn’t anything like pitching in an important situation. I would say his era speaks for itself.
DFox,
I know, I know. But he’s been OK lately. Don’t be such a hater. He’s still a Yankee.
I think Doooshererer is primed to take a beating, 8 games over, here we come.
Ugh, I can’t believe we’re going to miss Livan when the Twin come to town! That’s the showdown LuHud demanded!
Nick: Yeah, but tomorrow we gotta face a guy with an ERA under two!
Nick,
We could have a lot of fun with that one. Douchesharer?
He’s a great, great Murcer story:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/20/sports/baseball/20murcer.html?_r=1&ref=baseball&oref=slogin
mel: This is a family blog!
This offense is going to take you to the playoffs? Really! Those clouds are so comfy up here.
Rebecca,
Gross, but I couldn’t resist.
Speaking of.
Ortiz has homered in 3 straight rehab games. Not scheduled to rejoin team until they go back east.
Neyer has a good question for debate: Should the Red Sox re-sign Varitek?
Remember, Ducky was feeling sick for a few days, so this might (BIG MIGHT) be the time to have the Yankees face him. He might not be on his game.
Also, he was quoted as wondering what the A’s are doing, with all the trades he is wondering if the FO has given up on the season. That can bring down a team.
mel: Honestly? No.
I realize the Yankees aren’t getting much offensive production out of their catchers, either, but Molina’s defense (for the moment) makes up for it.
Varitek’s doesn’t.
mel, I really can’t touch that one.
Because it’s kind of gross.
It makes one hope that he and Paps never end up on the same team.
Neyer has a good question for debate: Should the Red Sox re-sign Varitek?
I hope they do.
I don’t think the RS will resign Veritek. That is a tough one for them, but how do you keep him with how he is declining in skills? The Sox aren’t afraid to let someone go. It makes it tougher with him being the C.
Ortiz homering in the minors doesn’t really test him as much as it would back in the majors, but it is a decent sign for him.
“do you really want a bullpen of giese, robertson, ramirez, veras in the playoffsâ€
What team is comfortable with their pen in the playoffs? The only one who should be is LAA because of Shields. White Sox have a good pen too… but can Linebrink/Dotel get big outs in the playoffs?
Are the Sox comfortable with Aardesma, Okijima, Lopez, Delcarmen, Hansen?
Are the Mets comfortable with Schoenweiss, Sanchez, Heilman, Feliciano, Muniz? Not to mention, their most unreliable arm might be Wagner.
Are the Rays comfortable with Balfour, Howell, Wheeler, Miller, Hammel?
Are the Cubs comfortable with Marmol, Howery, Cotts, Marshall?
Are the Phillies comfortable with Romero, Durbin, Madson, Gordon?
Are the Cards comfortable with Franklin, Izzy, Springer, Villone?
Twins comfortable with Reyes, Gurrier, Cain, Bass, Breslow? D’Backs comfortable with Qualls, Slaten, Lyon, Pena, Cruz?
Most teams assemble pens with smoke and mirrors, as you can see. All these teams have a couple of reliable, solid veterans and young power arms. But none of these teams have middle guys who can shut you down.
I don’t know much about Cash, but it doesn’t seem like he’s a starting catcher.
Varitek gives you all those “intangibles” (read: smokin’ hot hitters backing you up) but has been lost at the plate for 2 years.
The whole Captain thing kind of complicates things.
I say they lowball him on years and money, which he will gratefully accept. He really likes wearin the C.
Blanton wasn’t doing much for the A’s this season, it was his time to go. Street is next.
If the RS lowball Tek too much he might take it, but he would only be the backup catcher then. Its going to impact them as a team. Add to that the saga with Manny…. its going to be interesting to see how things play out for them next season.
Oh yeah, today’s win pushed the Yankees to a league leading 41-1 when winning after 6 innings!
So take that you bullpen haters and glass-jaw commenters (that’s you, Michael Kay)
Supposedly, the scouts that went to see Street weren’t impressed.
“Are the Sox comfortable with Aardesma, Okijima, Lopez, Delcarmen, Hansen?”
Hell yeah, at least three of those guys are the best setup man in the majors!
“Shaikin says the Rockies would demand prospect Nick Adenhart for starters, and the Angels might consider that. However, the Rockies also want Howie Kendrick and one of Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders. The Angels wouldn’t give up that type of package for Miguel Cabrera last winter, and they won’t give in for Holliday.”
from mlbtraderumors.com
Holy Crap. Would ANYONE give up that kind of package? I can’t imagine they would. That’s like…Hughes, healthy Wang AND Cano.
Nick: you know, between you and Mel, I’m going to have nightmares tonight.
Street hasn’t pitched that well recently, but he will still get decent value back.
Brewers are about to pickup Durham from the Giants.
mel the glass jaw has to do when the team is down ..but I get it.
P.S. anybody want to see a dangerous team ? go to MLB.com click on the gamewrap Tigers vs Orioles and click on the video log, that team is scary offensively. (Orioles)
I don’t see Holliday getting a package like that.
whozat fingers crossed on that deal for the Angels
mel-
The Ducherererer joke was pretty funny.
Brandon: Crazy that the Orioles are still not completley out of it even though they were supposed to lose 100 games this year!
Rebecca,
There’s a nice highlight of the Galaxy game. Donovan hooks one into the goal.
Brandon,
The Yankees have finally awaken from their slumber. They know they’re running out of games, and are going to fight now.
They better fight mel.
Rebecca that Orioles offense is just incredibly scrappy
Hernandez ties the game off of Joel Zumaya
Melvin Mora keeps hitting
Adam Jones is a defensive/offensive wiz
and now Luke Scott is turning into a dangerous batter
Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased and honored to introduce the Oklahoma City…(drumroll, please)…Thunder!
That was the winner from the naming contest. Wonder what the losing names were…
oh boy the Oklahoma Thunder coming to the NBA
Buddy,
Too off-color for the youngsters.
Maybe Dukeshire?
Kasey has posted there is someone here more negative then me..
BTW Einsteins the season is 60% done so Hawkins is owed about $1.2 mill, so if the yDFA him will that really be a big deal..
AS I have said over and over the Yanks do not need any pen help, anyone who thinks they do is a MORON.
They need a starting pitcher and they need the multi millionaires in there lineup to get a big hit on occasion that is it………
Oklahoma Thunder?
I actually really, really like that one. Well done.
I kept hearing Outlaws as another possible name for Oklahoma City, but Thunder will suffice.
mel- The Shark is closing in on Claret Jug Number Three!
Who would have thought golf without Tiger could be interesting?
Then again, who would have thought baseball without the Babe could be interesting?
Hawkins should be demoted. Giese has doen a nice job since joining the big league club.
Kevin
J-Dawg,
I like the Outlaws. Wild, wild west. You’ve already got the Spurs, Cowboys, and Indians.
Let’s hope that Chrissie’s an even better sports psychologist than she is a tennis player (Norman says they play tennis 4-5 times a week!)
She was really cute in her pigtails today.
“Could always use a hudson street.”
some good restaurants down on Hudson St. in the West Village, eh?
*snare*
I think it’s time to drop the DFA on Mr. Hawkins in order to make room for Bruney. I’m incredibly impressed with this bullpen right now, I must say.
Christian goes down over Gardner when Damon’s ready. That’s pretty obvious. I don’t see what Christian brings to the table as a part-time MLB player, and he enjoys the occasional belly flop while trying to steal second. Gardner, at least, brings patience at the plate, speed, and a nice glove.
I cannot wait to see Johnny Damon again in the lineup, though.
Speaking of which, there’s a ridiculous headline on NoMaas somehow connecting Damon, Sexson….who knows. If you think some of the posters here are bad, that site, aside from the occasional funny graphic, continues to just not get it.
“The Yankees have finally awaken from their slumber.”
as evidenced by tonight’s powerhouse offensive performance.
“as evidenced by tonight’s powerhouse offensive performance.”
i missed the “style points” column in the standings. they won the game.
Chrissie wasn’t as cute as Tracey Austin.
I thought the Yankees would escape this Top 10. Don’t know how they excluded Papelbon.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/pgStory?contentId=8356040#sport=MLB&photo=8355988
How could Alex not make that list?
Oh, kasey, why you gotta kill the joy?
This team fought today. They left a lot out there, but the bottom half of the order came through.
I think you’ll see a team playing with urgency. The curtains are closing on the season and the stadium.
(And don’t get used to Posada behind the plate. Teams are going to run, run, run. And love Molina’s pick off move to 1st!)
he’s number 3 after Clemens Rebecca
Rebecca,
Cuz you know. That’s just Alex being Alex. Why does that warrant any special consideration? I’m not going to judge him anymore because leopards don’t change their spots and all that.
mel: They certainly seem genuinely happy together. And Greg says that playing tennis with Chris has really helped his chronic back problem.
Maybe the Yankees’ victory today wasn’t pretty, but I would rather have an ugly win than a pretty loss. Victory is victory, and this one is satisfying just like any other win. This team is trying to stay in contention and gear up for a run toward the division lead and a win with an HBP is perfectly okay with me. I’ll take a win with a balk or a wild pitch just as well. Makes no difference to me.
Good luck is a product of hard work and maybe today’s victory symbolizes that this team has put the time in and is working hard to right the ship.
WoW:
We’re used to Milton Bradley snapping in the heat of the moment. And nothing is safe — not umps, fans or his own anterior cruciate ligament — when he loses it. So Royals announcer Ryan Lefebvre caught a break when Rangers skipper Ron Washington and GM Jon Daniels intercepted Bradley before the slugger could confront the would-be sluggee in the TV booth. In praising Josh Hamilton’s resurrection during the telecast, Lefebvre suggested that Bradley had still not turned his life around, comments Bradley heard because he happened to be the DH and was listening to the game in the clubhouse. How did Bradley choose to convince Lefebvre that he had in fact turned his life around and was no longer the loose cannon the announcer was disparaging? By bounding up four flights of stairs on his reconstructed knee to get at the broadcaster in the booth. Washington and Daniels talked Bradley back down to the clubhouse, where the All-Star broke down in tears. Nope, nothing unstable there.
Brandon: I know. My point is that if you were expecting him to be left off that list, you’ve crossed the line between optimistic and delusional.
mel: They should have won the game by a larger margin, but the bottom of the order played magnificently today, at bat and in the field. The top of the order owes Robbie, Melky, Wilson and Brett a drink. And they owe Molina a dinner.
J-dawg:
Agreed. You make your own luck. Good or bad.
If that nut job can be acquired for Kennedy and Cox I’d still take him atleast if Papelbon or Youkilis pops off Bradley will actually do something
Brandon,
You sly guy, you just want to see him bust down the door of the YES booth and beat Kay into a pulp.
Bad boy!
Beckett *
(not papelbum I’m sorry didn’t know where that came from)
mel he’d immediately would be a fan favorite after that.
I need someone to tell me what they did w/ Phil Coke he went from sitting 88 mph to 93
(who’s responsible for this ?)
Brandon,
Beckett’s been humbled by his less than sterling performances this year. He doesn’t have that swagger this year.
Paps is Pinstripe Enemy #1
You’re asking how Coke added life to his fastball?
“With a Coke and smile”?
You’re asking how Coke added life to his fastball?
I left myself wiiiiiiiide open for that one
Exhibit # 10 on why Cashman needs to be fired, yet another guy who wanted to sign with the Yankees, but Cashman didn’t pursue him, see Ted Lilly, Carlos Beltran, now Mahay…….
From Bill Madden in today’s NY Daily News..”This observation from a veteran scout seems to speak volumes about the current state of the Yankees: “What does it say about the Yankees’ system that they have to resort to signing a guy who was released by a last-place team in hopes of getting some power? Used to be, the Yankees would come into town and you’d feel you were down 2-0 before you even took the field. Now, you almost welcome them. They only have one guy- A-Rod- who scares you with the longball and you don’t have to worry about adjusting your lineup in the late innings because they don’t have a lefty in the bullpen.”
As for the latter, Cashman could have had a more-than-serviceable lefty reliever on the free agent market last winter in Ron Mahay, who wanted to sign with the Yankees, but also wanted a two-year contract. Cashman had made a decision not to offer more than one year to any reliever. So, instead, he signed LaTroy Hawkins for $3.75 million and gambled that Billy Traber would somehow fill the lefty need in the pen. In the classic case of “you get what you pay for,” Hawkins and Traber have both been busts, while Mahay, who got two years and $8 million from the Royals, is 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA and likely will net them a couple of prospects in the next couple of weeks.”
“now Mahay…….”
You wanted Cashman to sign a 37 year old reliever who has walked 4+ batters per nine innings, with a K:BB ratio under 2 to a 2 year deal? He’s somehow managed to knock a walk per 9 off his rate this year. That’s the only change, and it’s completely out of line with his career performance. And thus likely not to continue. And he’s 37.
This is another one of those decisions that was right at the time, and is only getting play now because he HAS worked out for someone else.
And, let’s remember that Beltran not being a Yankee was George’s fault. He wanted RJ, and didn’t want to acquire another big FA that offseason. Wouldn’t Navarro look pretty nice as a Yankee right now?
whozat I hear you…its just frustrating how Cashman gets so scared off by his many mistakes, we are the Yankees and can afford to pay for the mistakes….they charge enough for the tickets that’s for sure….I mean eventually some signings will work out we just have to keep trying…..so Mike Myers didn’t work, Mahay was worth a shot, why are we getting cheap on some types of players but are willing to pay ARod more than anyone else would have and then some and Posada 4 years, etc………to this day I still say that Cashman and company getting cheap on Jeff Nelson cost us the 2001 World Series…..Rivera had to pitch alot of 2 inning saves that year and he was tired by the end of the year and finally gave up the game 7 runs…..I mean we had to trade for Jay Witasick and watch him give up like 10 runs in game 6, what a joke……
and Nelson had an All Star year for the Mariners….
“So what, you want us simply to ignor the fact that OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS, Holliday’s OPS is almost 300 pts higher at Coors then on the road?â€
———————————————————–
whozat – reasonable answer, unlike Pat M. (McPatM) who’s answer was basically ‘BECAUSE I SAID SO’. But why not post some numbers to give us all a relative bearing?
Holliday has a career OPS of 131. However, 2006-2008, it is around 144. Matsui has a career OPS of 126, so indeed, Holliday is more of a force with the bat (and with the glove and legs too, I imagine). I just hope his has Yankee Stadium LF power.
heath phillips was dumped finally, so who’s next to go – traber or white? (there will always be room at scranton for the next 17 rhp in the org to move in
) i think that gardner/christian goes down for damon and hawkins gets DFAed when bruney is judged ready. none of the suggested trades are very intriguing, and i suspect that a complete surprise (or 2) will be arriving by 7/31.
Pete-
I just left a post about Clete Boyer, from your previous question who was the last player to win a game for the Yankees while being hit. Please read, as Clete Boyer, was one if not the best, fielding 3rd basemen the Yankees ever had.
Any comments would be appreciated.
everyone keeps saying that i would of taken the slower approach with the young pitchers but you fail to remember that the way players are and should be brought up to the majors depends on their AAA numbers and sometimes AA numbers.hughes, joba, kennedy were all dominating every single outing with filthy numbers.when their is nothing left to prove in AAA and the need is there then they have to be brought up.it takes time and their is no way of knowing how good hughes will be but he does have to make adjustments.he can’t keep throwing just his curve and fastball,he has to develop his change and slider and maybe develop a cutter.i am very impressed with robertson on a different note.
Everyone-
Don’t get too enamored with Cashman obtaining Matt Holliday. First, He’s a Boras client, who always has his players test FA, often signing them past the 12/02 deadline to receive draft picks. And he is a FA after the 2009 season. The LAA inquired and Colorado “supposedly” wanted pitcher Nick Adenhart, Howie Kendrick, and one of either recent all-star pitchers, Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders.
Jason Bay wants to stay in Pittsburgh, Xavier Nady has developed into a good player, but can he play a decent outfield?
Everyone of the contenders are looking for pitchers, both starters and relievers.
Want a lefty reliever for the pen? Asking price right now for Fuentes and Marte is too high, considering Fuentes is a FA and wants to close, and Marte has a club option for 6M which would likely not be picked up in favor of a 2-3 year deal, which the Yankees would be hesitant to do. Would Will Ohman, of the Braves be a cheaper and better option?? The braves will probably be sellers.
No to Teixeira, another Boras agent, who isn’t hitting lefties very well and will command another Giambi “albatross around their neck,” type contract. They should part ways with Giambi and his 23M contract after the season, knowing they already have enough possible options at 1st base, and an outfielder and starter are greater needs for next year.
Detroit looking for a reliever. Would Farnsworth to them for left fielder Marcus Thames be the starting point of a possible deal?
And lastly, don’t expect any big “outfield” names in the 2009 FA class , except maybe Milton Bradley.
Cashman will have to sacrifice his best trading chips-pitching- to get position players and another starter.
Why is Chris Malec never mentioned when Yankee prospects names are thrown around? The kid is 25yrs old, hitting .320 at Trenton with a .418 OBP and more walks than strikeouts(41bb-31 so.) with a better OPS than Austin Jackson; .873 – .831 (Not saying Malec is better than Jackson just using numbers for illustrative purposes). Is he a legit prospect? His numbers are impressive.
Score a big one for Joe Girardi for trusting Kyle to get things right! It’s tough to argue with the way he’s run the bullpen.
Great start to the second half.
Posada could be hurting the team at this point. His contract isn’t going anywhere. He needs to get his shoulder fixed right. If it means rest then rest him. If it’s surgery do it. If you need him to DH fine. But he needs to be far away from the bacv of the plate.
Tidrow, first of all, Malec is soon to be 26 years old (hardly a kid), he’s still in AA, has little power, no speed and no glove. at best, he’s a utility player….2 years from now.
Giese or Hawkins? If Giese has options he’d be the answer at least on paper. Some team could pick up LaTroy. Then he could play more often. But LaTroy has experience that they may not want to give up even if it’s mopping up.
I bet they don’t let go of LaTroy because of the veteran presence.
There’s 11 days to go until the trade deadline and questions to be asked.
- How soon before Bruney and Aceves are ready ?
- How marginal are Hawkins, Moeller, Betemit, Rasner and Giese and how do they fit in the plans for the rest of the season ?
- Is Cashman near a deal with Pittsburgh for Nady or Marte or both ? With Damon coming back, any deal involving an outfielder will change the status of Gardner and Christian until September.
Mark
If the Yankees wanted a veteran presence, they would have gone and traded for Tony Clark, recently traded to the Diamondbacks! The Yankees have nothing to gain by keeping Hawkins, and only money to lose by trading or dumping him.
Boston appears to be in a funk. They’re not the powerhouse that ESPN portrays them to be. The Yankees must capitalize now.
Bronxbyte
Bruney should be up soon, looking for a little more velocity and stamina.
Aceves don’t know if he’ll get a chance to start soon. Suspect if Rasners next start is bad, that he’ll be sent down.
Suspect Moeller, Hawkins and Rasner don’t fit into rest of season plans. Based on Betemit’s play yesterday, if he shows more consistency, suspect he still has a role. Giese hasn’t pitched in a while, so no feel if he stays or goes.
Nady and Marte- Many contenders are looking at both players, and Pittsburgh has been tough for the Yankees to deal with, so no, don’t expect a deal for either very soon, and Marte, in my opinion would only be a rental for the rest of the year. Look at my comments at 9:13.
mark, I agree. Hawkins, if he continues to put up decent numbers (albeit in blowout games), will have some value in the National League where he can pitch adequately. Geise is much more valuable than LaTroy , but now that Joba is going at least 6 innings, Giese’s ability to give 2-3 innings is not needed right now. He’s a former MLB pitcher, so I don’t know if he has options.
Knowing how the Yankees have functioned and disfunctioned over the years it’s hard to know who had the final word on most transactions until recently. Someone even went back to Jeff Nelson 2001 as if Cashman had total control then. That’s just not the case. In fact, he still only has “total control” when either Hank or Hal is on the same page with him… so I think of many of these personnel mistakes as being “organizational” screwups rather than laying it all at Cashman’s feet.
That said, Mahay didn’t give the Yankees a chance once he got his offer from Kansas City and I’m not sure I want a guy who is so quick to take the cash from a lousy team instead of trying to sell himself to a contender.
Farnsworth in a deal for Thames? Intriguing. Would put a lot of pressure on the kids to handle the eighth inning, but sure would make the lineup better. Detroit just got Zumaya and Rodney back, so I’m not sure they’d be real interested.
Of course holding on to Thames in the first place might have been a good idea, although Ruben Sierra did help them in 2003-04.
86W183-
Rodney back but pitching poorly with lack of control and Zumaya lost the game last night. Detroit, could be a possibility for the wild card position in the playoffs, meaning we would have to win our division.
Surely Hawkins is the one who SHOULD be replaced, but I bet it’s Giese who WILL be demoted. Ca$hman doesn’t seem to understand basic economic principles like “sunk co$ts are sunk” and he usually tends to keep those more expensive players in the roster no matter how poorly they have performed.
This reminds me of what the clever Mark Twain said: “The man who sets out to carry a cat by its tail learns something that will always be useful and which never will grow dim or doubtful.”!!
