It doesn’t happen very often

The last-time the Yankees won on a walk-off HBP was July 15, 1965 when Steve Ridzik of the Washington Senators hit Clete Boyer in the bottom of the 12th to give the Yankees a 2-1 win. Ray Barker scored.

Ridzik, who passed away in January, was from Yonkers, N.Y., which is about 10 minutes from the Stadium.

Rumor on mlbtraderumors.com that Street could be headed to the Brewers for a 22 year old high-A OFer that’s defensively excellent and fast.

That price seems light, but maybe Billy knows something. Street hasn’t looked good this season.

Uh, does this quote bother anyone else?

“I’ve never been so happy to see somebody get hit,” said Derek Jeter, who jogged home from third base. “I really don’t think I would’ve scored if he hit it anywhere else. I was too tired. Any way you can get them, I guess.”

I know it was crazy hot out and a 12 inning game, and how did Chavez make that catch, and aren’t athletes, you know, not supposed to say things like that?

jennifer: I have no doubt he was tired as hell..it just doesn’t seem Jeterian to admit it!

Can anyone explain what is going on in the Tampa game? Brandon League was ejected for hitting Navarro.

  9. Glenn July 19th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

The Rays are having their way with the Jays 6-0. The gap narrows between the Yanks and Socks.
This has the makings of an interesting end of the regular season.

  10. sw July 19th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

jennifer–Halladay gave up three infield singles, one on what looked like a bunt that went foul, then the GS to Longoria, and then Navarro bunted for a base hit, and the Jays felt that was wrong. Halladay tried to hit the next guy but missed, so Brandon Lee decided to take matters into his own hands and “retaliate” by hitting Navarro when he came up to bat again.

I expect to hear more of walk-off HBPs by Tim Kerkjian on BBTN. Or should they be limp-off HBPs?

“I really don’t think I would’ve scored if he hit it anywhere else. I was too tired. Any way you can get them, I guess.””

    i think it’s called self-deprecating humor.

    or something resembling that.

…or may in peter’s way of thinking, he was lying because we know he really would have scored if it was hit somewhere else.

Clearly, Girardi needs to be read his Juan Miranda rights before he takes questions from the media.

Great win, I listed to most of it on the A’s radio station but got to watch a couple innings at a BBQ place in Vallejo, CA (home of CC Sabathia — the town, not the BBQ place, but maybe that too).

Kudos to Girardi for putting his heaviest and largest player into the game to increase the likelihood of the HBP. I’m suprised Livan isn’t inserted into Twins games more often for the same reason.

And kudos to my mom who who stayed at the Stadium for the entire game and got full value for her birthday present.

I fully understand that I’ll get ragged on for this, but Phillip Hughes is going to play a big role on this club come mid to late August……Maybe then many of my fellow bloggers will see once again how good and how very special a pitcher he is …..

toronto made a late rally scorin 4 in the 9 but 6 runs down was too much as tampa wins 6-4

Nick-Props to your mom for staying for the whole game in that heat. Was she ok and everything?

  21. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 19th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

    Was this discussed?

    http://www.nj.com/yankees/inde.....s_bay.html

Hideki Matsui’s uncertain status for the rest of the year has caused the Yankees to increase their interest in Pittsburgh outfielders Jason Bay and Xavier Nady.

A major-league official familiar with the Pirates organization, who asked not to be named because trade talks are ongoing, said the Yankees also have interest in lefty relievers Damaso Marte and John Grabow.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time,” the official said of the whether anything happens. “I think with recent events, (the Yankees) would like to add a bat.”

Pittsburgh is asking more for Bay than Nady; minor-league outfielders Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata and pitchers such as Ian Kennedy are names that could be discussed.

Melky Cabrera does not interest the Pirates, who have Nate McLouth in center field. Bay or Nady could split left field/DH for the Yankees with Johnny Damon.

i fully understand that i’ll get ragged on for this, but how bout livan tonight shutting down the best hitting team in the american league.

sorry pat m. , but that was just the perfect lead in annoy nick in sf.

i’ll trust your instincts on hughes and keep an open mind. you probably know more about him than any one else on the blog from seeing him for so long .
i do like his natural movement on his fastball.
i just think he’s really young still.

  23. benfica356 July 19th, 2008 at 9:14 pm

kennedy, tabata and someone else for nady or bay?

Thanks, yeah, she’s fine. They stayed hydrated and as cool as possible. And there was a steady breeze provided by flailing Oakland bats.

  26. Nick in SF July 19th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

randy, no ragging from me, I knew Livan would want to feast on some innings after the long AS break! He was wasting away.

  27. PAT M. July 19th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Randy 1, I agree with about his age but I think he’s matured in leaps and bounds as he’s had to deal with adversity for the first time in his pitching career…..Talent wise he’s an A+ prospect as every Organization in MLB knows…..Frankly if it wasn’t for these physical ( non career threatening ) setbacks, he’d be where Joba is….It’s just a matter of time that he picks up where he was prior to theses setbacks….Just think back to his games vs. Texas and Cleveland last October…..I would love to pick up Bay & Marte…They are not just short term pieces…Cashman needs to start utilizing his abundance of young pitchers and start moving some of them to better the club….This team has the pieces to be a major player come October……

  28. randy l July 19th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

    nick in sf-

how ironic would it be if the twins finish ahead of the yankees for the wild card and the difference maker was livan hernandez?

… and what are the twins thinking with liriano when they have liriano all set , tuned up and ready to go up in rochester.

i’m telling you with liriano waiting in the wings, we could get livan really cheap right now.

“Cashman needs to start utilizing his abundance of young pitchers and start moving some of them to better the club….This team has the pieces to be a major player come October……”

    amen, on that.

Over on my blog I asked “how often does a hit-by-pitch win a game?”…I didn’t realize it hadn’t happened for the Yanks since 1965!

    Thanks for the info, Pete!

Any idea when it happed last in MLB? Also, how often has it happened in MLB history?

    Anyone?

  31. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 19th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

It happened in a Padres/Mets game from June. Padres won 2-1 in the 9th

  32. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 19th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

argh..it would help if I finished typing my post..

**in the 9th, with the bases loaded, Schoeneweis pitching, game tied at 1 and 1 out, Paul McAnulty was hit by a pitch and tada..game over

    Pete-
Why didn’t you mention that Clete Boyer also passed away last summer June 4th, 2007 from a stroke in Atlanta.

Clete was one of the best fielding third baseman, and should have won many gold gloves in AL, but Brooks Robinson was playing in that era also. His first gold glove was in 1969, while playing 3rd for the Braves.

Boyer, was traded to the Yankees from Kansas City in 1959, the Yankees won pennants 1960-1964, capturing WS titles in 1961 and 1962. Also was at third when Bobby Murcer was brought up in 1965 as the Yankees future shortstop.

In my opinion having seen him play for the Yankees, he was the best fielding 3rd baseman to ever play for the Yankees, but never got the recognition he deserved because of his lifetime .242 BA. Ken Boyer, of the Cardinals, was always the better hitter. One dissapointment for Clete is that he never had the chance to play on the same team as his brother. In the 1964 WS against St Louis, they both homered in the seventh game won by St Louis 7-5, the first time brothers homered in the same game.

I met him, have a signed picture of him standing next to Mantle and Maris, right after they won the WS in 1962. Looking at the picture he was the “spitting” image of a young George Clooney.

I’d like to see you get to the stadium from Yonkers in 10 minutes…
