Pete-
Why didn't you mention that Clete Boyer also passed away last summer June 4th, 2007 from a stroke in Atlanta.

Clete was one of the best fielding third baseman, and should have won many gold gloves in AL, but Brooks Robinson was playing in that era also. His first gold glove was in 1969, while playing 3rd for the Braves.

Boyer, was traded to the Yankees from Kansas City in 1959, the Yankees won pennants 1960-1964, capturing WS titles in 1961 and 1962. Also was at third when Bobby Murcer was brought up in 1965 as the Yankees future shortstop.

In my opinion having seen him play for the Yankees, he was the best fielding 3rd baseman to ever play for the Yankees, but never got the recognition he deserved because of his lifetime .242 BA. Ken Boyer, of the Cardinals, was always the better hitter. One dissapointment for Clete is that he never had the chance to play on the same team as his brother. In the 1964 WS against St Louis, they both homered in the seventh game won by St Louis 7-5, the first time brothers homered in the same game.

I met him, have a signed picture of him standing next to Mantle and Maris, right after they won the WS in 1962. Looking at the picture he was the "spitting" image of a young George Clooney.

Over on my blog I asked "how often does a hit-by-pitch win a game?"...I didn't realize it hadn't happened for the Yanks since 1965!

Thanks for the info, Pete!

Any idea when it happed last in MLB? Also, how often has it happened in MLB history?

Anyone?

"Cashman needs to start utilizing his abundance of young pitchers and start moving some of them to better the club….This team has the pieces to be a major player come October……"

amen, on that.

nick in sf-

how ironic would it be if the twins finish ahead of the yankees for the wild card and the difference maker was livan hernandez?

... and what are the twins thinking with liriano when they have liriano all set , tuned up and ready to go up in rochester.

i'm telling you with liriano waiting in the wings, we could get livan really cheap right now.

Randy 1, I agree with about his age but I think he's matured in leaps and bounds as he's had to deal with adversity for the first time in his pitching career.....Talent wise he's an A+ prospect as every Organization in MLB knows.....Frankly if it wasn't for these physical ( non career threatening ) setbacks, he'd be where Joba is....It's just a matter of time that he picks up where he was prior to theses setbacks....Just think back to his games vs. Texas and Cleveland last October.....I would love to pick up Bay & Marte...They are not just short term pieces...Cashman needs to start utilizing his abundance of young pitchers and start moving some of them to better the club....This team has the pieces to be a major player come October......
