Missing in action from Tuesday night

July
19

What do these men have in common?

Sparky Anderson
Johnny Bench
Jim Bunning
Bobby Doerr
Carlton Fisk
Monte Irvin
George Kell
Sandy Koufax
Stan Musial
Nolan Ryan
Red Schoendienst
Tom Seaver
Duke Snider
Carl Yastrzemski

From what I can tell, these are the only living Hall of Famers who weren’t at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. Some of these gentlemen are pretty old. Pudge and Yaz probably didn’t want to get booed. But Johnny Bench, Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan all had something better to do?

————

This is kind of creepy. It seems they could record sounds from Bob Sheppard and have his voice announce lineups forever.

Mets or Cubs will make easy work of the Dodgers in the ALDS.

  2. Nick in SF

They must be minting money at Lace and Stiletto.

  3. Bombshell

The Cubs will demolish them for sure, but the Mets? Too many guys in their lineup who could go cold (see: Yankees offense 2006-07), plus the Dodgers have outstanding playoff pitching with Billingsley, Lowe and Kuroda, plus a dominant late inning bullpen.

  4. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Would have loved to see Sandy Koufax there among others, but I’m sure they had their reason.

    My blog is worth $20,323.

    I’m small and insignificant :-D

  5. sw

Joe Morgan wasn’t on the field either, no?

  6. mel

Ahem, Pete, we like to consider ourselves $hareholder$. :)

  7. GreenBeret7

The “Little Red Wagon” was having a joint love fest with each other. They couldn’t make it.

  8. GreenBeret7

It was sad not seeing “The Greatest Living Hitter” there. Stan Musial is a class act. He should have been a Yankee.

  9. Jorge Tabata

Speaking of the Mets… can Sexon be our Fernando Tatis?

  10. Bob(The Original)

Yeah, I was surprised Morgan wasn’t there too.

  11. mel

Maybe Joe Morgan’s following one of the tenets of journalism: Tell the story, don’t be the story.

Ho Ho Ho, good one, huh?

  12. Chris

That Sheppard voice thing is cool…but it would also definitely be weird.

  13. Evan

    RE: Nolan Ryan and Morgan

When Texas was in town a couple of weeks ago, YES showed Ryan sitting in the Loge area during one of the games. you’d think he’d come back to shot the breeze with his peers.

And whats up with Morgan? He was at home run derby - couldn’t he stay an extra day.

Also missing - Pete Rose. I know, I know. But it still feels odd.

  14. mel

Well, whatever their reasons were, it would seem that they missed out on a very special moment.

I listened to it on the radio and it was chicken skin when they called out Scooter.

It was also great, because in my mind’s eye I saw them as players in their prime, in their uniforms. Not in blue blazers with their aches and pains.

Whoever wasn’t touched by the magic of that night doesn’t have a soul.

Does Goose even watch the Yankees?

Goose Gossage knows about the bullpen and about the Hall of Fame. So listen to what he had to say yesterday. Gossage believes the Yankees need to put Joba Chamberlain back in the pen and that George Steinbrenner should someday join him in Cooperstown. “I think he’s more valuable, personally, in the bullpen, to utilize him two or three or four days out of the week is more valuable to a ballclub than starting him,” Gossage said of Chamberlain. If Joba goes back, who starts in his place? “The way starters are used today, now it’s getting closer to five innings to being a quality start,” Gossage said. “I think they can get most anybody to be a starter today. With the emphasis on those set-up guys, they’ve really been instrumental. Now you don’t win a world championship without a great, great bullpen. So I think he was more valuable in the bullpen.”

  16. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16)

Phew that was a close one, I thought Alex made front pg. there for a sec.

  17. Evan

    Brandon-

Not to worry, ARod doesn’t like young busty babes. His tastes trend towards muscular women and women pushing 50. I imagine he stood in line to see Mama Mia and his dream boat, the 59 year old Meryl Streep.

  18. GreenBeret7

Evan, it must be a terrible life that would make you feel the need to be a jerk at 5:08 AM on a Saturday morning.

  19. Evan

^^^ Oh Oh. I got a feelin’ you stood in line to see Mama Mia. C’mon, we razz everybody. Didn’t catch Brandon’s joke on ARod and strippers.

  20. Atsushi Okamura

I dont know if that is creepy…

  21. Brian

I’ve met Joe Morgan (played a round of golf with him at Bryant Gumble’s Celeb/Am tourney). He is a really good guy, but did not hide his disdain for the Yankees - he still has bad blood from his playing days (I don’t remember why, but he told me).

  22. Russell

JUST HEARD !!!!!!!!!!!!! PETE WILL BE ON WFAN AT 9:05 THIS (Saturday) MORNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. ANSKY

    Mel

Nobody in their right mind should be qouting what anyone’s ever said in the Post … even if it were Einstein.

Besides, Goose didn’t like Joba’s fist pump even though lots of guys do it.

  24. Y's Guy

aside from standing on the field for an hour before the all star game, the hall of famers had a parade to walk through and (i believe) a rehearsal on the field at yankee stadium. thats alot of time standing and walking around for older guys. also consider that they will all be getting together in 2 weeks in cooperstown for hof induction ceremonies. none of these guys is obligated to be at the all-star ceremonies so you cant blame the ones who didnt take part. especially morgan who has a heavy travel schedule for his job and probaby grabs every change he gets for a day off and a round of golf. it was quite a turnout and the only guy i really missed was stan-the-man b/c hes such a great guy and very underrated on the greatest-players scale.

  25. Thomo

The LoHud Yankees Blog = PRICELESS!

  26. ANSKY

Being the Post they could have published something recently that someone (lets say maybe Goose) thought 2 months ago, even if there’s a chance he might have changed his mind since then.

If Goose still thinks that now maybe you’re right and he’s not watching the Yanks.

If that’s the case, and maybe Mr Fu Manchu thinks the Yanks should ban Giambi’s mustache because it’s ‘unprofessional’.

Now if someone from the Post were to read that tidbit of sarcasm I just whipped up, they could turn it into a back page headline touting what fans say Goose ‘could be’ or ’should be’ pontificating as good professional behavior, along with crossed-out pictures of the ’stache and the fist pump. And weeks of trashy articles could ensue.

  27. ANSKY

What the hell am I doing awake, much less posting comments, at 8AM on a Saturday. What a loser! :)

  28. Y's Guy

goose is all about relief pitchers and joba should consider it a complement that gosssage wants him to be one but goose is dead wrong about joba this year. this team is desparate for SP and the bullpen has come together to fill his spot tremendously. also consider that b/c joba looks like a cinch to get his full 130 whatever innings, it will leave him in position to start almost the full year next season. it is possible, even likely that joba may see some more bullpen time next year if he’s limited to around 160 innings, and they will always have the option of moving him back to the bullpen anytime after this season. alot of things havent gone right this half-season, but the joba plan is working out better than anyone could have reasonable hoped for.

  29. ANSKY

If Joba has a low season innings limit next year, I’d either start his season a month late or give him a quick hook for the first month or so, rather than starting him off in the and stretch out his season. bullpen.

Well, either that or conjure some mystery injury like a hangnail or a blister, so he can ‘rehab’ for a month, thus stretching his season out.

  30. ANSKY

” … him off in the BULLPEN and stretch out his season.”

    Sorry, cut/paste mistake.

  31. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Joba should be up to at least 180 innings he can pitch next season. That should be plenty to get through the season if they keep him back of the rotation.

I think Goose might realize the value of Joba in the rotation, but it would diminish his pitching if he didn’t talk about closing and relief as being more important. To him it was. That was his gig. Plus, he won’t ever admit to being wrong.

  32. Y's Guy

i think you just start joba out in the rotation next year and see how it goes. you just keep pitching him till you get past the all-star break without any injuries before you give him time off that he cant get back.

  33. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

I wonder if Hughes will be pitching during the winter a bit to get him some innings? He could use it, otherwise he will be very limited in how many he can pitch next season.

  34. Y's Guy

i loved watching mo get inside edwar’s head last night and then the kid comes in and throws lights-out stuff!

  35. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

I think Mo would make a good pitching coach. He is very good sharing techniques and even more strategy.

  36. mko

I think Mo would make a good pitching coach. He is very good sharing techniques and even more strategy.

Definitely, I’m sure the Yankees will keep him around once he’s retired in 10 years or so ;)

  37. Tim N.

You know what’s creepier? 64% of respondents think it’s a good idea.

It’s a ballpark, not a theme park. Or at least it’s supposed to be.

  38. Yankee Lover

got to be fair, I complained here yesterday about the lineup and I was off base. Hopefully Joba keeps it going today. Whats amazing is that I look at the A`s and I think they are very average, not a great offensive team, pitching? average especially since they traded away some guys, yet they have a better record than the Yanks?

  39. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed

FYI- Pete is going to be on WFAN at 9:05

  40. randy l

the yankees have won no world championships in the time that giambi and mussina have been with the team.

it’s time to move on from the past . make the smart decision and let them go after this year . the league will make an adjustment to mussina pitching more aggressively this year (after a likely closed door ultimatum from girardi) .

all a hitter has to do is to get right up on top of the plate and challenge the crap out of mussina and he’s in trouble again. he will not get into a fight with hitters over this. he will not knock them off the plate if they stay there. hopefully this will take some time to get around the league, but it will. this year is found money with mussina. be thankful and move on.

same with giambi. it would take 20 million to keep both of them for next year. it’s just not worth it. twenty million a year would get a very good first baseman.

you would think abreau will be on some sort of salary push the rest of the year. i would let him go to no matter how well he does the rest of the way. with the flexible cash position of the yankees if they let these three go, cashman( if he’s there) would have a chance to rebuild the team more around aggressive speed and defense that is obviously critical in the aftermath of the ped era.

it’s like downsizing from that ford expedition to a honda cr-v. times change.
.. and if you really want a ford expedition later after you gave up the old one, you can get another one really cheap.

  41. Y's Guy

    live-blogging pete’s wfan appearance?

  42. Y's Guy

sounds like richard neer has been reading this blog….

  43. Yankee Lover

Need to be fair, I was way off base complaining about last nights lineup.
A`s are a hard team to figure out. On paper they are not even close to the Yankees offensively, or even pitching wise with the trades they have made but they are one game better than the Yankees, thats weird

  44. sunny615

I read in the headlines that the Dodgers now are in a tie for first in the NL West… curious I looked at the standings and to be in first - you need a 47-49 record.

You can interpret that in two ways…

Torre is doing his job by putting his time in first place…

    THe NL West sucks.

    I vote #2.

  45. Y's Guy

nothing earth shattering but pete sounds strong, tossing out info and opinions clean, he could do radio no problem.

  46. sunny615

The A’s also play the Mariners and Rangers a heck of a lot more often than we do.

  47. Yankee Lover

Yankee pitching prospects. Looking at the SWB pitching roster
    Aceves 26 yrs old
    Britton 26
    Bruney 26
    Cox 24
    Horne 25
    Igawa 29
    Jackson 26
    Karstens 25
    McCutheon 25
    White 27

    Kennedy 23

Hmmmm, that does not look too promising, it looks like some of these guys have been in the minors for quite some time

  48. Bronxbyte

At the rate he’s going for innings pitched, it would be advisable for Hughes to pitch in the Arizona Instructional League in the fall to keep up his arm strength.
Living in Tampa, he’s always an early arrival to spring training so he should be right on par with all other pitchers by the time the 2009 season starts.

  49. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive?

Good job on the radio this morning Pete!

  50. Jersey Jim

    Yankee lover …

Of all the names you mentioned at SWB, 4 or 5 are in any real plans for the Yankees. The rest will be throw ins to finish off a deal. The Yankees would have to eat some money for Igawa.

  51. Drew

Wow I can get 25K woo hoo

It was odd that Morgan wasn’t there either since he was there for the hr derby.

  52. Skippy

My blog is worth a whopping $1,693.62. The sad part is that that’s better than I expectes; I thought it would come out at about $0.99.

  53. Mike S.

I heard from a reliable source that Duke Snider isn’t doing well. Doerr will be 90. Musial 88. Amazing that Feller, who will be 90 was there. Schoendienst is in his upper 80s.

When the Yanks have the closing ceremony in November, they are hoping all living ex-Yankees can be there. It’ll be interesting if Tommy Henrich (95) or Ralph Houk (89) are there.

  54. zellyanks91

Although it may be creepy, I like the idea of recording Mr. Sheppard’s voice, so we could hear him forever. I am most disappointed with these guys not showing up because they have NY ties:

Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver, Duke Snider

    My blog is worth: $14,678.04

    Kevin

  55. CM

Anybody who listened to Morgan work the ‘98 ALCS for NBC and heard him constantly talking about how that Yankee team could not match up to the Big Red Mahine shouldn’t be too surprised. Frankly I’m glad he didn’t desecrate the Stadium dirt by standing on it for that ceremony, no matter how good a player he was he’s one of the worst things about being a baseball fan now. If there was ever a time and place for a piano to fall from the sky, it was when Phillips, Morgan, and Berman were sitting together at the HR Derby. I think ESPN put those 3 together on purpose just to test mute buttons across America.

  56. Tiki

Morgan was indeed in the parade and then with the SNY guys at an event on the day following the ASG (David Wright was there) so clearly he had a previous engagement. I actually heard Morgan say he was sorry he never got to wear the pinstripes and that George once called him and asked him if he wanted to be a Yankee - I had a hard time believing that since Willie did his job just fine but Morgan was just being Morgan, I guess.

  57. Tony

Pete from what i understand is old Johnny Bench won’t show up to anything unless $$$$ is involved.

  58. Frank V.

Bad job outta these guys for not showing up. If 89 year old Bob Feller and a barely able to walk Willie McCovey can show up, so should the rest. I understand some of these guys may have serious health problems in their old age, but if they don’t then there is no excuse. I am particularly disappointed in Koufax, Ryan, Bench, and Yaz.

  59. Frank V.

    ….And Seaver & Fisk.
