The dynamic duo … wait, scratch that

Andy Pettitte has gotten the win and Mariano Rivera the save 55 times. That ties the record set by Oakland’s Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersley.
“That’s great,” Rivera said. “Andy is a good man, a good teammate and a great pitcher. I’m proud that we did that.”
UPDATE, 4:50 p.m.: Upon further review by the Elias Sports Bureau, it seems that Welch and Eckserley combined for 57 victories and saves. So Pettitte and Rivera remain in second place.
But the Yankees still won the game 2-1.

Didn’t the graphic on YES say the record was 57?
Mo, all those things about Andy? You can say them about yourself as well.
Nelson Cruz hit 3 HR yesterday in AAA he has 30 HR and 80 RBI, he’s a RHB might be cheap, why not ?
Girardi and Kenny got teary eyed talking about the creatures chanting Bobby’s name.
OF Nelson Cruz
A deadline possibility ?
Andy and Mo make me proud to be a Yankee fan. I only wish Andy got to pitch his entire career with us. I wish we had him in ‘04. Pete, Andy and Mo may not have broken the record yet, but thanks for this thread, because these guys deserve it.
I think TBS had the stat wrong too. With this after all of Girardi’s deception where can we turn for solid info?!?
/sarcasm/
Edwar Gonzalez for RF!!!
Not much fight in the D’Rays – going down easier than a –
well, let’s just say they are going down easy!
Giambis still the best clutch hitter they have. Molina must catch as much as possible. Give Posada one day a week to catch
Right now the pitching is hot and so it would make sense to continue to catch Molina because the pitchers are doing good.
2 mil a year for a great backup.
Andy’s a stud. Still getting the job done after all these years.
Oakland heading to Tampa Bay next. Let’s hope they find some offense.
.345/.445/.706
30 HR
80 RBI
21 SB
I don’t think Nelson Cruz is another Shelley Duncan
Nelson Cruz news
I predict Andy-Mo will break the record sometime in September 2008.
You like Nelson Cruz, do yah, Brandon?
Has Molina started more games than Jorge? I think so, but I’m not sure.
Rebecca he’d be interesting atleas cheap don’t you think ?
Great win today.
The team started with a sweep of one of the contenders for the WC, though soon As will fall of the cliff due to all the trades.
What a sweep following the ASG does to the standings?
Pending Boston game, we are only 3.5 games behind in the wild card, and five games behind in the division.
I sitll beleive that we will win the division as we have enough season left. Pitching has been going great. If the offense wakes up or Cash gets a reinforcement, we should be on a roll. Second half is going to be very exciting.
Rays loss inches Yanks to 4 1/2 games out.
C’mon Angels !!!!!!!
Brandon: Indeed.
I got to go but incase Brian Cashman is skimming the blog
LH Relief for the deadline

Good Day all. Be back later.
A Boston loss puts us 2 back in the all-important loss column.
In a season where no team has reached 60 wins yet, the Yankees are right in there. Not to say we don’t have issues, but the pitching’s been great and the defense has been good.
Next on tap:
Blackburn vs. Ponson (“Ponson possesses a 10-2 record with a 2.42 ERA in 15 career appearances against Minnesota.”
Slowey vs. Rasner (first start against Yanks, yikes!)
Perkins vs. Moose (rookie, yikes!)
And what are the walk rates on those bullpen arms? SLG%?
ESPN: did we really need to know how many seconds are left before the trade deadline?
nick in sf-
the yankees dodged a bullet not having to face livan.
randy, I mentioned last night how Livan vs. the Yankees was the matchup LoHud demanded. We’re being cheated for sure. Livan might toss a ball slow enough for Gardner to really pound.
...well maybe a beach ball.
Screw Elias Sports Bureau. You could have gotten the win/save combo info right here:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/sotd/archives/127
randy l and Nick,
Watch, Minnie will shuffle the rotation to foil the Yankees. Just like Toronto and Oakland did.
Brandon – I don’t think ANY of those players are available.
the yankees dodged a bullet not having to face livan.
Livan is cheap with his money. He hides it in a garage.
wow this dudes voice is annoying…. Baseball Tonight.
It looks like Phil Hughes might be here sooner than expected.
“Injured Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes — now in a rehabilitative throwing program at the team’s training complex in Tampa — may be among a handful of players who may appear within the next couple of weeks or so at Triple A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, according to a speculative report by The Sunday Voice.â€

From the espn recap:
A’s closer Huston Street had a lousy Saturday. After blowing his fifth save, someone told Street that he’d been traded to Milwaukee—merely a rumor that began on a blog. “It was a tough couple hours,” Street said.
I love you Andy & Mo.
Brandon: Pranksters stole my April Fool’s joke!
(seriously check my blog!)
livan has a 4.04 era at home. 7.48 on the road.
maybe that was a reason why the twins didn’t want him pitching in yankee stadium.
Bobby M. should be in the roll call for the rest of the season…at least.
Just watching baseball tonight, and Steve Phillips, after the Yankees sweep an above average A’s team, emphasized the Yankees “personnel issues.” You can’t make it up….
Brandon – is Nelson Cruz the new Erick Threets? lol
Randy
Liriano of the Twins has filed some kind of grievance with the Twins that he should be brought up from AAA because he is pitching so well right now.
It is rumored that if Liriano was brought up your main man Livan would be put in the bullpen or traded.
I would call the A’s more ‘over achieving’ than ‘above average’, but of course Phillips will denigrate any Yankee accomplishment. Giambi’s ‘stache would make Phillips’ goatee run and hide.
JMO:
I hate Phillips, but he’s got an interesting point—the Yankees have an issue as long as Jorge Posada can’t throw runners out and Jose Molina can.
They can’t not play Jorge, but teams are running roughshod over him when he starts.
Holliday hit 11 hrs of his 16 at home.
“nick in sf-
the yankees dodged a bullet not having to face livan.”
Was it the USS New Jersey that fired shells the size of VW Bugs? (the originals, not the new-fangled ones)
Livan to the bullpen won’t happen now, the bullpen doors are too narrow.
Phillips also says we need pitching – so he clearly has watched our games intently lately.
He is just a yankee-hater (who can blame him after his squad got beat down by us)
Not enough innings to eat in the bullpen; Livan would be starved.
the Yanks do need a starter.. they need the offensive players they have just play better they are capable… they need 1 starter until wang/hughes get back…the pen is fine they have bruney, ohlendorf, melancon, and cox in waiting..
I trade a pen arm for some help.. trade Krazy Kyle at the height of his value!!!!That would be a gamble but may make sense.. I get Nady but only if he is cheap and Pitt and COlo. Gm’s are delusional…
The Yanks will get Damon back real real soon and he should help….
ESPN currently expressing their bromance for Dustin “get me some rogaine” Pedroia.
sickening.
who cares what steve phillips thinks he is a out and out moron…
these clowns think the yanks need bullpen help… they need there stars to play better nad they need a rental starter for 8 starts…......
All contenders are looking for pitching help, even the Brewers, who need help in the bullpen. Our bullpen has been great and Bruney will soon be back and Hawkins gone.
Yes it would be nice to have a lefty in the bullpen, but Edwar Ramirez has been nasty against lefties. Hopefully our bullpen can keep it up, and I think they will, because Girardi has done a great job in mixing and matching his bullpen pitchers.
Would I trade for Fuentes? NO! He’d be a very expensive rental, is a FA and wants to close.
Trade for Marte? NO! Club option for 6M, another one that would cost us valuable trading chips, and would probably want a 2-3 year extension.
In reality, trading for a guy like Nelson Cruz makes a lot of sense, as we have plenty of arms to trade in the minors.
The 5th starter will probably be someone like a Jarrod Washburn, who will not require much in return and is a FA.
ray (sox fan),
1. Do you think the Sox will pick up Manny’s option for ‘09?
2. What do you with Varitek at the end of the season?
Stuart-
“Trade Krazy Kyle at the height of his value.”
Totally agree and many teams looking for bullpen help.
Detroit wants help as Rodney has been erratic. How about Farnsworth included in a deal for Marcus Thames, former Yankee for former Tiger?
stuart –
I’m not sure it is even as many as 8 starts. Wanger may be back in September and Hughes and IPK could spot in before that if Rasner turns into a pumpkin.
There are enough arms in the system as long as Moose, Joba and Andy continue to perform at the high level they have maintained. The bullpen’s performance has been tremendous!
As a ‘glass half-full’ guy, I’m sure you will agree!
The Angels IBB Manny to get to Lowell.
Don’t they know that Manny is playing under protest and Lowell is clutch?
Ah, it works out. Lowell caught looking.
“ESPN currently expressing their bromance for Dustin “get me some rogaine†Pedroia.
sickening.”
Borderline pornographic – I agree Zach
Mel-
Both Ramirez and Varitek are 37 yo. Don’t think they will resign Varitek. Ivan Rodriguez at 37 is FA.
Do not think they need to pick up Manny’s club option for 20M. He’s best at DH and they already have the best DH in the game.
Of course you’re talking to a die-hard Yankee fan who believes, even though Giambi won the game today, that he should not be re-signed, as well as Abreu, Farnsworth, and probably Mussina. Pettitte will probably sign a one year deal to pitch in the new stadium. If none of the Yankee FA’s are re-signed that’s about 90M off the books.
Just for fun, I want to see Wakefield mess with the Angels’ minds and throw a first pitch fastball.
Yankee Trader,
All signs point to not picking it up, but they’re still the best 1-2 punch in baseball. That’s something the Red Sox have to consider.
Hi Mel,
Yesterday Randy asked me the same question about Manny at the end of the in game thread. I did a posting at 7:08 so I won’t repeat everything.
Briefly, I don’t think the Sox have decided what to do with Manny but are giving him the message that they will not tolerate certain things like pushing and shoving the club traveling secretary. Manny wants to know right now if he will be given the 20 million option, but I think the Sox will wait and see how he does in the next 2 and a half months.
I don’t know what they will do with Varitek. As everyone knows his offense has been woeful and almost non-existent. This is not a criticism…just an observation that I think Yankee management may be rethinking whether it was wise to give Posada the big four year contract.
Even if Tek was hitting better I am almost certain that the Sox will not offer him a “Posada” contract. I believe that Scott Boras is his agent so it will be interesting. If he is willing to take a one or two year contract then maybe they sign him. He is good with the pitchers but has become a huge liability at the plate and not when he is behind the plate.
Just doesn’t seem to be a lot of good catchers out there right now.
What really messes with batter’s heads is when Wakefield throws a change up…..which he allegedly did in a game two weeks ago!!! Must have been in the 40 mph range.
“Briefly, I don’t think the Sox have decided what to do with Manny but are giving him the message that they will not tolerate certain things like pushing and shoving the club traveling secretary.”
It was reported they fined Manny. Any rumor about how much?
A tremendously talented player with a bad attitude makes any organization look awful whether they discipline him sternly or not. It is too bad that some athletes test the limits of their fan support to the extent that Manny has (although others have been much worse than he has)
“ESPN currently expressing their bromance for Dustin “get me some rogaine†Pedroia. sickening.”
Here’s what’s on ESPN.com (Pascarelli): Still sickened?
‘It was interesting Tuesday to watch the American League dugout throughout a long night at the All-Star Game, and see how Pedroia constantly gravitated to Jeter, who like most of the AL players (the exceptions including Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro Suzuki and Jonathan Papelbon), remained in the dugout after being removed from the game and spent the rest of the night rooting from the top step.
“He’s been a star for a long time and someone who has always played the game right,” Pedroia said of the Yankees’ captain. “I don’t have his ability, but I learn an awful lot by just watching him. And having this chance in my first All-Star Game to have a chance to be a teammate, I tried to soak up as much as I could.”’

It was reported that Manny was given a six figure fine.
Jim –
The issue is not Pedroia, but the ESPN/Gammons wet kiss they gave him at the open of tonight’s broadcast.
If Pedroia treat Jeter like Jeter treated Cal Ripken, then he is smarter than I thought – but that wasn’t what I was talking about.
Jim,
I could care less about what Pedroia said and/or does. I am the first one to agree that the kid can flat out hit. Whether he plays the game right???....I think the verdict is still out on that one. He does seem a bit on the whiny side, and maybe a tad bit cocky…but thats just my opinion. I’m not looking for any validation from others.
And yes, the ESPN love-fest or “bro-mance” as i prefer to categorize it as, is downright sickening.
my two cents.
I got ripped here for suggesting Cruz a few weeks ago… told he was a classic 4-A player. Well his numbers in Triple-A are far better than anything I ever saw out of Duncan and his short MLB stints were also more productive. If the Yanks are looking inexpensive… this guy is worth a decent (not A-list) pitcher since he’s blocked by the Rangers’ outfield glut.
I have screamed all year for a LH reliever, but the performances of the young guys in the pen has convinced me to STFU…. RH hitting remains a need, LH reliver a luxury.
Is it time to go ahead and tell Jorge and Hideki to have their srugeries and get 100 % for 2009? If not, it’s pretty damn close.
This is a honestly well written article – I can’t wait for other posts you write…
