A-Rod seeks to rule the world

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 22, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As the Yankees try to make the playoffs, Alex Rodriguez is trying to buff his battered image. According to The Wall Street Journal, he has signed with the famed William Morris Agency.

At last count, A-Rod now has three agents as he is also represented by Scott Boras and Guy Oseary. No word on their status.

(UPDATE, 12:58 p.m.: The AP cleared this up. Oseary brokered the deal with William Morris. So everybody remains in the mix for Alex, Inc.)

This statement from A-Rod: “Partnering with William Morris will enable me to broaden the scope of my career in creative and innovative ways. I’m excited to see what we will be able to accomplish together, both domestically and abroad.”

Here’s an innovative way: Hit in the playoffs and get into the World Series. That would fix everything.

    Pavano back before Hughes, Pete?

You do realize if the Yankees could pitch in October it wouldn’t be an issue right?

  4. TKinDC (subtract one from Jete's GiDP) July 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 am

Maybe A-Rod can do a lame superhero movie like Shaq’s Kazam (or whatever it was).

His super ability will be to hit homeruns in blowouts (just kidding!)

  5. AlbanyYankee July 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 am

Jeez, this guy just cannot get out of his own way. Can’t he just go home after the game, have a beer, watch a movie and go to bed (without some wrinkly, old witch)? Amazing.

Think about how different Arods life would be had the Yankees finished off the sox in 04 and went to the world series.

  8. Doreen July 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 am

Does he really believe doing a movie with Madonna, of all people, would be a positive experience? Has he ever even SEEN a movie that Madonna’s been in? (Not that I believe British tabloids, but, just sayin’.)

    What a laugh.

ARod, just play baseball. Although the occasion GQ cover would be nice. He does, after all, photograph very nicely and he’s got a killer bod.

  9. jw July 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 am

Pete, you do a great job, but you use the word “as” far too much. At best, it’s a completely meaningless waste of space when used as above. At worst, it can be taken to mean “because” when you don’t really mean that what the reader is about to read is caused by the preceding language. Don’t be scared of dashes, semicolons, and colons; they’re awfully useful.

Prediction: Similar to the opt-out on the NYY contract, he gets back together with Cynthia.

Even if it’s true the movie maker might face prison time for few years, breaking an entering, voyerism w/o consent, illegal equipmment, stalking, blackmail…this tape guy isn’t very smart.

  12. Steve July 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 am

Leave it to Pete to give credence to British tabloid crap. I guess he must have also believed all those stories about a taped Rams walkthrough from Super Bowl 34.

No chance. He’s felt like he’s been in prison w/ her for some time, his friends even told him not to marry her. Divorce proceedings continue this week. They are going for a quick split.

  14. pat July 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 am

Was that sarcasm about the movie or did you not click the link about what the britsih tabloids are reporting?

    there’s no money in that.

Doreen, I believe that movie remark was somebody’s lame attempt at humor.

  17. TKinDC (subtract one from Jete's GiDP) July 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am

    Doreen –

Click the link to the story about the film with Madonna. It isn’t exactly a film – think of it as a videotape a la Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee

  18. Chris NY July 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 am

did Pete really just link to a British tabloid?

  19. Chris NY July 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 am

I just read in a British tabloid that A-Rod did in fact give birth from his own body to his and C-Rod’s second child. So, it is out of jealousy that she requested the divorce.

  20. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am

I’m watching ed RFandall on tv right now. They have Mel Stottlemyre, Sam McDowell and Mike Torres. The first question they asked McDowell, who threw 100+ MPH all day long, how he got the name “Sudden Sam”. His response was that his wife gave him that name. Sam was always a character.

  21. Mr G July 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am

“Here’s an innovative way: Hit in the playoffs and get into the World Series. That would fix everything.”

Would it? He could win the MVP (again) carry the Yanks to a WS title and some people (present company included) would still find something to complain or ridicule.

  22. Slu July 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am

I am so sick of A-Rod post season bashing.

As was stated above, if they had any pitching in October, it wouldn’t matter.

And second, the sample size is awfully small.

A-ROD IS NOT THE REASON THE YANKEES HAVE NOT WON A WORLD SERIES SINCE 2000!

Think of it as A-Rod contributing physical therapy for a senior citizen. :(

  27. Rob C July 22nd, 2008 at 11:43 am

Slu and others, I agree totally. The reason the Yanks haven’t won since 2000 is because they mash their way into the post-season and then the pitching falters when the game gets tighter. That’s why Cashman has put such an emphasis on young pitching, and you know the Yankees will be going after a free agent ace when one becomes available. I still have faith in Hughes (Kennedy, not so much), and we know that Joba has ace potential. Wang would be the league’s BEST #2 starter, Pettitte will be around at least one more year, and we can go from there.

The bottom line is that A-Rod is a hall of famer and is not viewed as one. I think when we look back on this guy’s career, we’re all going to regret the way he gets crucified in the media. And I hope for his sake that the Yankees win one, JUST ONE, so all of this talk can go away.

  28. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 am

I don’t think it hurts for him to do things to polish up his image. He is a huge name in baseball, and will be associated with the Yankees for all time. This might even help him to relax more at the plate and do what he does best. Mash the ball.

  29. Steve July 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am

    Doreen
Dont feel too bad. I would guess that most people just ignore Pete’s links but this one was so far out of the realm of believability that it required a click. Pete has lowered himself to a new a level with this one (I didnt think that was possible considering his double standard for Girardi compared to Belicheat in regards to lieing to the media).

  30. RCK July 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 am

Slu, clearly you don’t know anything about baseball. A-Rod is definitely the reason that the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2000. I know this because everyone in the sports media tells me it is so, and how could they be wrong? 2001, 2002, and 2003 especially were all his fault.

AlbanyYankee, right you are. A-Rod should just go home after the game and eschew all advertising and endorsement deals. Just like Derek Jeter.

  31. YankeesLuv July 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am

These Madonna jokes are getting old Pete.
Also I agree with the other posters pitching is the main reason for us not going further in the playoffs not Arod.

I didn’t click because I figured whatever was in a British tabloid wasn’t worth the time. But if I was going to comment, I should have clicked.

I still stand by my statement that an occasional GQ spread would be nice, because ARod is photogenic and has a killer bod. Absolutely stand by that!

  36. whozat July 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 am

“2001, 2002, and 2003 especially were all his fault. ”

    It’s true!!!

I love how http://www.replacementlevel.com/ sarcastically attributes the playoff drought to “the curse of…oh, let’s say Clay Bellinger.”

  37. G. Love July 22nd, 2008 at 11:57 am

Arod doesn’t have 3 agents. Oseary’s a manager. There’s a difference between an agent and a manager. A manager is more intimately involved in the day to day development and handling of your career. An agent basically just brokers deals.

Athletes often have a sports agent (Boras) and an agent for the rest of the entertainment world whether it be commercials, video games, etc. CAA is one of the largest agencies in the world and right now they have the top A list actors and a huge section of athletes. I think 6 of the first 10 players drafted in the NFL were signed with CAA.

I’m actually surprised Arod didn’t go with CAA since William Morris isn’t the powerhouse it was back in the day.

William Morris will look to package Arod into business ventures outside of playing baseball and they will bring him opportunities that come to the agency.

Considering he’s about to halve his net worth shortly, I’m sure he’s looking to make some of that revenue back.

  38. whozat July 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 am

“ARod is photogenic and has a killer bod. Absolutely stand by that!”

I forget if it was an underarmour or adidas or nike add, but there was one add that showed Mo in one of those sweat-wicking sports bodysuit things, and I remember noticing how incredibly fit he looks. He’s not jacked at all, but he’s got zero extra fat and incredible definition.

Basically…the man is the perfect athlete. Every kid out there who wants to pitch should strive to be Mariano Rivera. Fluid mechanics, generally injury free (after, you know…the TJ surgery), supreme poise and confidence. If he’s not a first-ballot HOFer, the system is absurdly broken.

Did you see the rumor of Teixeira to the Angels for Robb Quinlan and Brandon Wood? If that has any truth to it, it seem the Yankees could better the offering than that.

Its probably nothing though, as many rumors are.

  43. john habyan July 22nd, 2008 at 12:10 pm

we’re the members of the all american team, we come from cities…near and far.

  44. Josh July 22nd, 2008 at 12:13 pm

    Canadians?? Jason Bay!!

  45. CM July 22nd, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Yeah. A-Rod needs to take us to the World Series! Forget about the pitching or the other 8 guys in the lineup! It’s A-Rod’s fault! We all know baseball is a sport where one guy can make all the difference and carry his team to a championship.

Cripes, A-Rod’s one of the main reason’s the Yankees even made the playoffs last year, and, frankly, as long as he’s hitting and fielding well (and he is), I don’t care if he’s making bukkake films in his off time.

  46. GGTM July 22nd, 2008 at 12:18 pm

I enjoy reading your blog and I find that you have great insight … and I can even laugh at the occasional jab at a player … but your incessant nastiness towards Alex Rodriguez is really starting to get annoying … and it takes away from the general enjoyment of your blog.

  47. whozat July 22nd, 2008 at 12:19 pm

“Did you see the rumor of Teixeira to the Angels for Robb Quinlan and Brandon Wood? If that has any truth to it, it seem the Yankees could better the offering than that.”

Well, Wood’s still a pretty good power-hitting position prospect that’s in AAA. If he sticks at SS, he’s pretty top-tier. The Yanks have pitching, but if the Braves want position players, the Yanks are SOL.

It’s also kinda the case that adding a 1B doesn’t really solve the Yankee problems this season and, if they want Tex going forward, they can just pay him in the offseason.

  48. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Regarding Pavano, If you got run over by a bus and survived, you`d still be back to work and recover faster than Pavano.

Regarding AROD its all more distractions for him, which he doesnt need. He is being paid alot of money to “play baseball” that should be his concentration. Thats his full time job. Anything he does in the off season is his business, right now he is being paid a crazy amount of money to play baseball he should focus on that first.

  49. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Teixiera to the Angels makes zero sense unless they trade Casey Kotchman, who is one of the best fielding first basemen around, as well as being a .290-.300 hitter who will start hitting for more power. Not the least of which would be the cost since they have no spots for outfielders or DH’s.

“The Yankees can attempt to deal w/ Texas and get Saltalamacchia who is 23 and at a low price right now”

And what exactly are you offering Texas to obtain Salty???

Alan Horne, Ian Kennedy, JB Cox, Kevin Whelan and Jairo Heredia for Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Milton Bradley not enough ?

  51. Ato July 22nd, 2008 at 12:23 pm

just stop worrying about your image and play baseball and get a clutch hit once in a while.

  52. Yanksgal07 July 22nd, 2008 at 12:24 pm

British Tabloids are the ultimate in trash reporting. They make American Tabloids look like the NY Times…

At the beginning of the season who would have thought that the pitching would be keeping us in contention…both starters and bullpen ??? If the offense finally comes out of hibernation…things will get pretty exciting in Yankeeland.

    Go Yankees 2008 !!!

    he’s doing both.

  54. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Whozat, I know there is a log jam at first, my point was it seems a paltry offering for Teixeira compared to what the Yankees could offer.

I think a number of teams could better that offering without too much pain. The one nice thing about trading for Teixeira is that it would give him a tryout and the opportunity to sign him before he is in the open market. Not that it seems likely for them to do it, or for him to sign without fielding offers.

  55. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm

    Brandon,
you are too smart a baseball person to suggest Arod is a clutch hitter. I like him, and root for him too, but he is not as clutch this year as he was last year.

  56. Andrew July 22nd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Why is Texas already giving up on Salty? He’s only 23, switch hitter with power potential and cheap for Texas–I mean, Posada didn’t start producing in the bigs until he was 26, 27. You never read “Gerald Laird” and “Rangers’ franchise catcher” in the same sentence, so why are they now shopping Salty? Wishful thinking for the people that realize the Posada contract looks God-awful right now (although it might not look as bad if he rebounds from his surgery and is back to producing next year).

Too bad Montero projects at 1B–maybe they should start working him a little harder behind the plate.

  57. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 22nd, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Maybe if A-Rod gets his image polished up a bit, he won’t be thinking of things other than baseball.

“Alan Horne, Ian Kennedy, JB Cox, Kevin Whelan and Jairo Heredia for Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Milton Bradley not enough ?”

Doubt it. If I’m the GM from TX this is what those five pitchers look like to me.

    Kennedy – Number 4 or 5
    Horne – Can’t stay healthy
Whelan – TJ surgery waiting to happen
    Cox – Avg. bullpen arm
Heredia – Injury prone and too far away.

Why on earth would I trade Bradley and Salty for that package?

  63. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 22nd, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Why is Texas already giving up on Salty?

Because he’s already begun his service years and they still have Max Ramirez/Gerald Laird/Teagarden

He’s only 23, switch hitter with power potential and cheap for Texas–I mean, Posada didn’t start producing in the bigs until he was 26, 27. You never read “Gerald Laird” and “Rangers’ franchise catcher” in the same sentence, so why are they now shopping Salty?

Because Salty is the best chip they have, he’s 23 and there is depth behind him.

  64. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 22nd, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Why on earth would I trade Bradley and Salty for that package?

Texas would trade for pitching. Bradley’s stock is high in a limited market,Salty again there is depth behind him and he is 23.

  65. Andrew July 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pm

They’re not taking the Yankee poo-poo platter if he’s their best chip. If you want Bradley and another (young, cheap, prospect-type) player, you’re going to have to part with one of your bigger prospects than what’s on that list, which raymagnetic did a nice job breaking down.

  66. Skippy July 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

G Love–you beat me to it–managers and agents do different work. I’m guessing William Morris–which obviously wants to get more into the athlete business to compete with CAA–pitched A Rod with the idea that at CAA he’d be just another athlete, but at WM he’d get more personal attention, there would be less of the potential conflicts of interest that might pop up at a place where there are a number of athletes with their own sets of endorsements, etc, etc. Plus–I almost hate to bring it up, but…I think Madonna’s at William Morris. Sigh.

  67. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2008 at 12:40 pm

How should they “work Montero a little harder behind the plate”? They have two high pick catchers at Charleston that both need work. He and Romine both catch and DH. As a matter of fact, Montero catches more than Romine does. They aren’t ready to be promoted right now, even if there was room in Tampa. He’s 18 and Romine is 19. There is time for them to develop.

  68. pat July 22nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    Pete

The other day you clearly defined why the paper you work for is not a tabloid. The criteria was the size of the page, you don’t use unnamed sources and your paper doesn’t have a gossip column.

The above blog entry isn’t in broadsheet format, includes multiple unnamed sources and screams gossip column. So while your paper may not be tabloid, your blog entry is.

  69. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm

no sweat Brandon, I enjoy reading your posts. I just think if you or I at our jobs (which are not as important or in the public eye as ARODS) were moonlighting so to speak, or not concentrating on our full time job our bosses would can us in a heartbeat.

Unncessary Pete. When you’re the biggest baseball player on the planet and a mogul like he is, there are some other things to think about. ARods made a pretty damn clear theres no one who wants to hit in the playoffs more than him. If it was that easy maybe you could play third instead of being a beat writer.

The “work Montero harder behind the plate” comment was more of a half-sarcastic joke than me seriously questioning his handling at Charleston–I was just trying to say, it’s a shame that he doesn’t defensively project to be a catcher/can’t get to the bigs sooner and manage to do it as a catcher and not a 1B, considering that Posada may never return to his 2007 form behind the plate.

  76. Chris NY July 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

“if you or I at our jobs were moonlighting so to speak, or not concentrating on our full time job our bosses would can us in a heartbeat.”

Name 1 marketable professional athlete that doesn’t do endorsement deals or side ventures. Not that A-Rod will ever need to work again, but he’s entitled to use his days in the spotlight to (continue to) set up his future and maximize his earning power. If it has any negative impact on his play, the team will deal with it. Until then, we can all safely assume whatever he is doing is within his right and the team has no issue with it.

Unless Jeter really has a Ford Edge and has concrete turn into grass as he walks through NYC drinking Gatorade, I’d say those are commercials he’s doing……

I would be willing to bet if you polled the Yankees and asked who works the hardest on the team (at baseball), A-Rod would be the first on the list and Jeter in the top 2 or 3 (Pettitte maybe ahead of him).

  77. douche July 22nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

salty was the main piece of that texiera deal, and has a lot of potential. they don’t expect him to be something incredible just yet. and bradley is an all star who has had no problems this year with the team (which obviously doesn’t include broadcaster, but even in that incident the rangers had his back). And he looks quite healthy to me.

you can rationalize them both down all you want, but thats how the rangers are going to look at it.

  78. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm

FWIW, Jeter’s in the Gillette ads now with Tiger and Roger Federer. Good for Derek, who no doubt landed that gig by magic, not because he has an agent who works on getting him endorsements.

And Pete, this is amazing…”Here’s an innovative way: Hit in the playoffs and get into the World Series. That would fix everything.”

Incredible. Pete, are you blaming A-Rod for the pitching too? LOL.

  79. darkmoonfire July 22nd, 2008 at 1:16 pm

I wouldn’t worry about the movie report. The Daily Star has as much semblance to a real newspaper as Carl Pavano does to Carl Ripken Jr.

  80. Doreen July 22nd, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Who knows what ARod is in search of, but the last thing the world needs is another Derek Jeter. With all due respect to Derek Jeter, that is. ARod needs to be ARod – and I guess therein lies the problem for him – the existential question of all time – who am I?

  81. Doreen July 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Just for clarification — I am still at times trying to find the answer to that question about myself, so I do not mean any disrespect to ARod, either. Some of us are destined to search…

  82. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 1:23 pm

When you are inconsistent, even mildly as AROD is in the clutch, people are going to look for reasons why or distractions. If the guy was performing at his level of play in key spots I`m sure nobody would care what he does on the outside. The minute you are inconsistent, even mildly, people will look for reasons

  83. RockinDaBronx July 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm

if he wants an image make over, maybe he should concentrate on performing in the post season and lay off the hair frost and purple lip liner. Also laying off on dating strange quinquagenarians might help.

  84. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm

I suggest that everyone who slams A-Rod’s postseason hitting in the past few years also take a look at the performance of all the other marquee names on the team.

It’ll be enlightening, unless you’ve just got it in for A-Rod.

  85. John July 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm

    Oh gee.
Another snarky A-Rod comment from the fat, jealous beat rider.

Pete…I love this blog…I read it every day and it’s in my bookmarks. But on the realz…this is getting old.

Yeah that JETER. He needs to stop carousing with hot twenty-somethings or he would be hitting .300 and not grounding into DP’s every other at bat.

  87. Interesting July 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Why do we bother explaining things to Peter anymore. All he does is bash the guy and claim he is just making a joke.

  88. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 2:04 pm

    Kitkat,

Looked it up- heres what I found

    Postseason career stats

    Player games batting average RBIS
    Damon 21 278 21
    Jeter 123 309 49
    Abreu 6 303 6 (much less games)
    Rodriguez 39 279 17
    Matsui 41 302 26
    Giambi 42 289 18

so AROD careerwise post season stats are this- He is 1 point better than Damon, or in 5th place among the players he comsidered much better than. For post season RBIS he is only better than Abreu, but Abreu has much fewer appearances
Matsui Giambi and Damon have about the same amount of games in post season as AROD and all their numbers look better

  89. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Batting average and RBIs? You’re kidding, right?

  90. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm

There are other stats that are much more relevant, and they’ll show over the past few postseasons – well since ALCS Game 4 2004 – that the hitting overall has been dreadful.

  91. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Actually, it’s RBI. Shame on me.

  92. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm

kidding about what? how bout home Runs

    Arod 7
    Damon 7
    Giamni 7
    Matsui 6

    post season career homers

  93. Yankee Lover July 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm

    kitkat

    we can go strikeouts too

    Matsui 23
    Damon 27
    Giambi 29

    and Alex 38

  94. youngtimer July 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm

“Here’s an innovative way: Hit in the playoffs and get into the World Series. That would fix everything.”

    Nice one, Pete.

  95. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Yankee Lover, come back when you show you know something about baseball. Seriously.

  96. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm

And again, I’m not saying that A-Rod has been good at the plate since 2004 ALCS Game 4.

My point is that Yankee hitting in general has been dismal, and A-Rod can hardly be singled out even though Pete and others continue to do so.

  97. Callie July 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm

You cannot be serious Yankeelover. AT ALL.

Look at the difference between Alex and DJ in their career postseason games. How many postseasons has Derek been again?

Not to get abusive, but engaging in this type of conversation is like pulling teeth. Grow up. It is not okay to be willfully ignorant, and say when he retires we’ll know better. Think for a minute, then maybe you (and others who think like you) won’t constantly look so flamingly empty headed.

And if your posts were meant to be sarcastic, then my bad.

Pete – no words. You continue to devolve into a pile of crap.

  98. GGTM July 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

ggtm, i can see ur taking ur defenses of arod off the yesnetwork board and onto lohud. way to represent (i still can’t stand the guy)
    –fat giambi

Hi fat … I have enjoyed reading this blog for a long time … but lately the constant critiquing of A-Rod around here in a nasty way is getting old … takes away from the usual enjoyment of the blog … isn’t this a baseball blog … why do we have to listen to someone taking sidebar kicks at someone over non-baseball related items?

  99. Martin July 22nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Haven’t we beaten the “doesn’t hit in the playoffs” routine to death yet?

  100. KitKat July 22nd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

    Not according to Pete, no.

  101. Paul Willard July 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Jeter has a successful cologne with Avon, he just open his 24 hour fitness here in New York today. He made it more plush and elegant, basically not for the average joe but for his rich friends and other rich people in NY. Jeter opens deals makes more money probably more than he makes playing baseball. Yet whenever Alex tries something, he gets knocked down as if he’s greedy and doesn’t deserve it. I think maybe the dude’s trying to change his image and do something more productive. He’s not the only rich athlete trying to cash in on other ventures. Who in this world is perfect. I love Jeter as a player on the field but time to stop comparing A-Rod with Jeter and having it seem as if Jeter is a better living human being than any of us. I’m sure the dude has flaws and has made plenty mistakes. He’s a single guy dating all the hot girls of the week, but he may have some dirty secrets too, just maybe he’s paid enough people to keep them quiet or smart enough to have them sign confidentiality agreements. I would hate the day if something really bad news about Jeter comes out and it’s earth shattering. I think half or New York may be ready to jump the Brooklyn bridge being so upset. I just try to stay focus on what these cats bring on the field. Trying to get in their off the field activities may not always be pleasant. These guys are still human and not any better than the rest of us just because they make a lot of money and famous.

  102. Real Fan July 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm

A-Rod succeeding in the post season and leading us to the World Series won’t grant him anyhting. It clearly hasn’t granted Derek Jeter anything based on some of the comments on this blog. A-Rod will go down as a great player and a shitty person. The All-Star game was a prime example. Where was A-Rod in the wee small hours of the morning? Nowhere to be seen on the Fox network. Derek, on the other hand, was congratulating Michael Young and representing the Yankees and the Stadium with the respect they deserve. Derek Jeter is a fan of the game and the Yankees first. A-Rod is a fan of himself first. Not a year has gone by where there wasn’t some A-Rod drama during the season. We’d be better served with an adequate bat that didn’t come with such a need for attention and baggage. Bring on the Scott Brousius’ of the world. I can do without this pre-fab greatest player.

  103. Real Fan July 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm

    John
Such a snarky comment from a fat jealous beat writer reader. Get realz loser.

A-Rod is a pre-fab player just like Madonna is a pre-fab pop star. It’s no wonder they have a connection. What do you expect by someone who was raised by Scott Boras? Jeter is a fan of the game and the Yankees first. A-Rod is a fan of himself. That was never more apparent that at the last All-Star game ever played at Yankees Stadium. An honour most fans and players would give anything for but where was A-Rod after the 6th inning? Nowhere near the stadium that’s where. Where was Jeter? Congratulating Michael Young at almost 2am savouring every moment and representing the Stadium and the organization with the respect it deserves. Oh and obviously bringing it in the post season grants you nothing based on some of the comments on this blog. Nobody has the post-season history Jeter has and he still gets bashed by these so-called fans,

Pete keep writing what you do and hopefully all the fake baseball fans who blindly follow A-Rod and his homeruns will leave. With any luck, they’ll take the headcase and his baggage with them.

  104. Wang IS Taiwan July 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 am

    Real Fan,

    Boy you sure nailed it.

I get the feeling we’ll never win another World Series with Arod on our team. And we’re stuck with him now and his records. Who cares about his freakin’ personal records? I want the Yanks to win the World Series.

Pete, you have an excellent read on people’s character. Some of your readers do not.

  105. John Sterling July 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm

“Think about how different Arods life would be had the Yankees finished off the sox in 04 and went to the world series.”

Yes, but it’s specifically because Stray-rod went to the Yankees instead of the Red Sox that the Red Sox won in 2004 and the Yankees suffered the worst collapse in post-season history.

The Curse of A-rod! Now 4 years and counting! :D

IT IS HIGH! IT IS FAR! IT IS…. THONG!!!
