Not really a Posada update

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 22, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees are still not revealing any information regarding the condition of Jorge Posada.

But it has been learned that the results of his MRI have been sent to Drs. James Andrews and Tim Kremchek for review. Those are the same two doctors Posada consulted with earlier this season when he went on the disabled list for the first time.

This is standard procedure, to get multiple opinions. All signs point to Posada needing to have surgery that will end his season. Given his production at the plate (.268/.411/.364) it wouldn’t seem to make much sense to put 2009 at risk by trying to make him a DH/1B for the rest of the season.

They are trying to spin this now. Expect the report to be that he is having surgery by the end of the week.

  2. Rishi July 22nd, 2008 at 11:00 pm

shoulder surgery – eh, no big deal :)

  3. Buddy Biancalana July 22nd, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Maybe they are working on a deal & don’t want to confirm what we all know already to give any more leverage to a trading partner.

  4. Brian July 22nd, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Oh well. He would have just infringed on Texiera’s space at 1B anyways.

  5. Yankees Ben July 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Totally agree, just get him ready for 2009.
The Yankees need Damon Jeter A-rod and Cano to hit for the rest of the season the same they’re hitting since the break and they’re good to go. Offensivly that is.

  6. TKinDC July 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm

How is the wing coming back from your surgery Rishi?

Btw I can’t believe you set the trend for Jorge! :)

  7. Rishi July 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm

it’s coming…lots of PT and trying not to use it (you use your arm a lot more than you realize!). I’m weaning off the pain pills so that’s good, too.

I’m telling you – found out that part of what they did was repair a labrum tear…I definitely feel his pain…

LMAO anyone see the WNBA Detroit Shock Indiana (IDK their name) brawl tonight

  9. stuart July 22nd, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Did not read the post tonight so here is my 2 cents.. again the pen is far from a problem, they have surplus arms that Milw., Az, and others would lover to have… Bruney, britton, cox, melancon, strickland, and others are all possible callups that can contribute.

They need a OF right bat and 1 starter especially if Wang does not return.

Not real complicated, they have played well enough for Cashman to look into adding to the roster…

Having a great pen is so beneficial in todays baseball it is scary….. Nady or Bay would help, I heard Bay cannot field.. Bay is a better hitter then Nady but has a $7 mill contract for next year… Pisstsburgh management historically have ben delusional on there players values so do not expect anything to go down….

Ibanaz would help but he is a lefty and not much of a fielder….I say pass on the Washburn rumors he is a short term fill in and at $9 mill next yr. NO THANK YOU…

They need to get Damn in LF and then they can play more of Sexson or betemit and see if they cannot help the O.. Gardner needs to pick up the O FAST……..

  10. rconn23 July 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Damn Seattle. Dice-K allows first two men to reach and next two batters swing at first pitches they see. Double play and ground out. Terrible.

  11. Rishi July 22nd, 2008 at 11:16 pm

David Wright looks like he is going to cry…and he needs help with the eyebrows – over-waxing is bad

  12. TKinDC July 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 pm

I think they would really like to get Bruney up to the big club to prove that he is healthy whether they are looking to trade him or trade someone else in the pen and slot Bruney in.

A starting pitcher or a RH bat – it is tough to know which is more pressing.

  13. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17) July 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 pm

    my fault

LA SPARK vs DETROIT SHOCK BRAWL

“I’m weaning off the pain pills so that’s good, too.”

no wonder you didn’t think nick in sf was funny.

    take more pills.

  15. ANSKY July 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Mr Second Half is back again. And not a day too soon if Posada’s bat is down for the count until ’09.

  16. Rishi July 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pm

randy :) sure thing…just for you.

    Headed offline – night all!!

  17. stuart July 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I say get a bat and have that be there only move. I say the arm for the rotation can be solved internally if Wang is really coming back Sept 1…
Between rasner and Ponson(short leash for both), aceves, mccutcheon, hughes(Sept) and others they can give them try’s.

the arms on the market stink and are not much better if at all and have contract issues etc… Fatscess is right on Aroyo if he was a FA at the end of the yr. but he is not and has a hefty contract so pass.

The lefty from Diego wolf was traded today for toothpaste.. These solutions like Wolf, arroyo, and others STINk……

Get a righty bat and use the damn farm,.. I still think they can trade some pen arms and add some spare parts or try to add more position prospects(that is where they are lacking)..

simple the farm is in good shape, they lose tons of dough off the payroll no matter what sterling and Susan say and they need to get younger and more athletic..

Posada is done for the season let’s be real…..

  18. Buddy Biancalana July 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm

    randy-

You are talking to the wrong person. It was Risty who was giving Nick a hard time.

  19. Jorge Tabata July 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Why only 3 innings for Aceves? Could he be coming up?

    Only threw 65 pitches.

  20. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17) July 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 pm

    Catfight at the Palace

    In Detroit again :?

  21. DFox July 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Wow, Seattle isn’t even going to make Dice-K work for his complete game shutout.

  22. Eazy E July 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Washburn is the best solution out there for an arm. In 11 of his 18 starts he’s gone at least 6 innings or more. All we need is someone that’s going to go past 5 and give us quality starts. Ponson and Rasner have trouble doing that.

  23. raymagnetic July 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm

“Why only 3 innings for Aceves? Could he be coming up?

    Only threw 65 pitches.”

He was on a 65 pitch limit. He’s still coming back from his injury.

  24. raymagnetic July 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm

“All we need is someone that’s going to go past 5 and give us quality starts. Ponson and Rasner have trouble doing that.”

I guess last night and tonight do not count? Ponson has pitched well for a 4th/5th starter for the Yanks. I really don’t know what you’re expecting to get from these guys.

  25. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17) July 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Washburn praying this is his last night in Seattle

  26. Eazy E July 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Ponson has been lucky. His biggest problem is he walks too many people. It’s like playing fire every game.. I think they talk about it on TV every game too.

Rasner hasn’t had a quality start since the begining of June. Tonight as great as he pitched, he didn’t go 6. He’s only had 5 quality starts out of 13 games this season.

Washburn will just be an upgrade to the #4 spot.

  27. stuart July 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm

washburn has another yr on his salary at $9 mill +, pass.. yeah he is better then rsner and fat boy but barely and then they are stuck with his contract for next yr…

PASS on old expensive JUNk, how complicated is that????

  28. G. Love July 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Hate to agree with my buddy Ray, but Ponson and Rasner pitched excellent the past 2 nights against a team that has been giving other teams fits with 2 all stars in the lineup.

That said, I still think we need an OF bat.

There was interesting interview on Michael Kay’s show today and it was with a Philly commentator who said the Phillies are close to emptying the farm for Holliday and Fuentes. That their rationale is they can win this year and still have Holliday next year and that trading anyone in AA for a major league caliber guys like Holliday and Fuentes is a good deal since you don’t know what you have in AA with any certainty.

I hope the Yanks add some pieces to give this team what it needs to get to October. Anyone can win the series this year.

    There’s no juggernauts out there.

  29. Buddy Biancalana July 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm

    stuart-

You think the Yanks should get Washburn?

  30. stuart July 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 pm

No on Washburn.. he is a slight upgradee with bggage….

  31. FLM July 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 pm

As much as I’d like to have Posada back this year, it definitely sounds like he’s going to need surgery. As a physical therapist, whose treated 7-8 RTC repairs over the last 10 months, he’s going to need every bit of the 7 months before pitcher’s and catchers report to get himself ready for next year. if it’s got to get done, do it now. just my somewhat educated opinion

  32. Wolf In Pinstripes July 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm

Google Ad for a “Barry Bonds Ringtone”? Is there such a thing?

  33. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Easy E., Ponson is averaging 3 walks a game over 9 innings. Hardly “too many”. He gets ground balls, doesn’t give up homers, wild pitches and no stolen bases (1 this year).

  34. Eazy E July 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm

No on Washburn.. he is a slight upgradee with bggage….

Then who else? They need someone else that pitches decent and goes longer than 5.

  35. ITALIANO!!!!! July 22nd, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Washburn will be a Yankee… Everything is their for a deal to happen… Seriously doubt it doesnt..

  36. george July 22nd, 2008 at 11:57 pm

if the doctors say Posada can hit with the shoulder, then it would be worth playing him as a DH-1B. It really depends upon the other options, and whether the doctors think his shoulder inhibit his hitting.

Posada’s a career .277/.380/.477. the 2008 Yanks could use that production, and would have to give the option of playing him serious thought, if the doctors give that option.

  37. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 pm

Yes there is Wolf. It says, “This is The Barry. If this is one of you F’n reporters, get outta my face, you sleazy SOBs.”

  38. Buddy Biancalana July 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 am

Washburn & Ibanez may come as a package, too bad Jojima is a huge headache.

  39. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 12:03 am

Stuart Litle, every player that gets traded has baggage. That’s how they get their socks and underwear from city to city.

  40. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 12:03 am

    ***Stuart Little***

  41. tonyb July 23rd, 2008 at 12:06 am

Hey, you know what? Even if Ponson has been lucky, we’re due for a little extended luck. This team has been snakebit all year, and it’s about time we caught a break.

Maybe Sydney is channeling Aaron Small.

Washburn doesn’t seem like the answer to me. Too much money for mediocrity. At least Ponson is essentially free.

  42. Eazy E July 23rd, 2008 at 12:17 am

Easy E., Ponson is averaging 3 walks a game over 9 innings. Hardly “too many”. He gets ground balls, doesn’t give up homers, wild pitches and no stolen bases (1 this year).

Ok? So you’re fine with a #4 who’s gone 5.2, 6, 5, 6 in his last four starts with us.

    And a #5 who’s gone 5.2, 5, 5, 5 in his last four starts with us.

That’s all it comes down to.

You can debate his #’s over 9 if you want.. I wish he went that far into games.

  43. Wolf In Pinstripes July 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 am

    LOL GB7

  44. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 12:31 am

Eazy E., Ponson is a fill-in #5 pitching in a #4 slot. Name what any other #4 and #5 doing what the Yanks #8 and #9 pitchers are doing any better or any worse than these two are?

  45. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 12:33 am

Wolf, I just wanted you to realize what was on there. Think how embarrassing it would be if you got that and your mom called you.

  46. Eazy E July 23rd, 2008 at 12:44 am

Eazy E., Ponson is a fill-in #5 pitching in a #4 slot. Name what any other #4 and #5 doing what the Yanks #8 and #9 pitchers are doing any better or any worse than these two are?
