Manny takes a seat

July
23

The Yankees are off tomorrow then open a three-game series in Boston on Friday. David Ortiz is expected back off his rehab. But will Manny Ramirez be there?

This from the AP:

Manny Ramirez was out of Boston’s lineup Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners with what his manager said was a sore knee.

“Just showed up this morning. He just came in and said, ‘My right knee hurts,’ ” manager Terry Francona said hours before the Red Sox went for a series sweep.

When asked if the slugger will be back for Friday’s opener against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, Francona said, “I’m hoping it’ll be all right Friday. I don’t know. I don’t really have a good answer for that. I hope so.”

Ramirez said his knee has been bothering him for about a week.

“I’ve just been trying to play it out,” he said, while jokingly singing for tips at his locker in the clubhouse, with his I-Pod docked to a speaker and a cup out seeking donations from teammates. “I decided it was time to give it a rest.”

Asked if he would be ready for the Yankees, Ramirez said, “I don’t know. I’m day-to-day at this point.”

Manny striking back at the Bahston front office??

This back and forth between manny and the front office will soon come to a head. Methinks this will be his last year in a Bahston uniform. Angels next?

  3. Chris NY

So…, basically, Manny just didn’t feel like playing today. I don’t care how early he’s at the ballpark or how late he stays. The guy is known for just deciding not to play somedays when he wants to make a point. Isn’t he arguing with Sox MGT about needing to “know where he stands” and whether they’ll pick up his option?

He did the same thing a couple years ago when he wanted a new contract or wanted to be traded or something… faked an illness and refused to play.

    Great hitter, total bum.

  4. Emma

He went to go sing in the streets for money!...that explains were he went that time he dissapeared into the green monster.

  5. raymagnetic ®™

Hopefully they put Manny on irrevocable waivers again in August. That would be awesome.

I know there’s no way they’d do that though because Tampa or NY would most assuredly scoop him up.

  6. Don Vito A. Bellamo

I would LOVE for him to sit out the whole series while the Yankees sweep them,,,, AT BOSTON….would drive home his point, drive him OUT of Bah-Stin and would drive us PAST the RedSux in the standings….Sah-weet ! :-)

  7. tim boat

Better question: Will Hawkins be there?

GOSH I HOPE NOT! Get rid of this bum now. If Giese goes down instead of Hawkins being DFA’d when Bruney comes back, I’ll have a conniption.

  8. Shame Spencer

is it wrong im entertained by this? if it were on my team id flip out but theres nothing like manny giving the sawks fans hell :D

  9. sunny615

    So let’s see…
    Contract negotiations are forthcoming.
Manny beats up a front office stooge.
    They fine manny six figures.
He sits on Riveras three strikes.
The Bahston boss calls him out.
Manny’s knee “hurts” just in time for the 3 game Yankee/Sawx series with the Yanks only 3.5 games back at the moment.

    Your move theo and co.

can’t wait for this drama to play itself out.

  10. G. Love

We’ve seen this pattern every year with him. Manny bucks. The Red Sox bite back. Then they all make up at the end of the season.

    He’s not going anywhere.

  11. Chris NY

Last year of his contract I think, definitely no way they put him on waivers, not that much money to take on for less than half a season. He’d love to play in NY, which means he’d actually play… Until Joe G tells him no peanut butter cups and he cries about it and pushes GEORGE Steinbrenner to the ground.

    Man, I love that guy.

  12. JoeT 28 in 09!!

    Will – perfect comment lol

The majority of the red sox players are, but not him

I don’t enjoy Manny either, but did you even read the quote? He’s been hurting for a week and tried to play through the pain and ended up realizing that he can’t…How does that equate to him not feeling like playing?

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Say what you want about Manny, but when he’s not hitting against Moose, he makes me crack up laughing…

  17. William Buckner

It makes sense to DFA Hawkins now. Bruney is ready, they are about to leave on a road trip, and you might need giese as a long man going into boston with ponson pitching one of the games.

  18. raymagnetic ®™

    Brent,

You don’t actually believe Manny is really hurt do you?

  19. Psyluk

Seems like Manny is trying to stick a thumb into the eyes of the big boys upstairs after the recent comments made about his contract status. Frankly, anyone that’s even contemplating sitting out on purpose against their biggest rivals just to make a point isn’t worth keeping on the team. You can’t play through a “sore knee” as a DH? Granted, Matsui also has a sore knee, but at least we know he’s not faking it.

  20. sunny615

by the way, moose is two wins away from his mountain dew.

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Wow, guys, I’m looking at the box score while I do my postgame wrap…

Every Minnesota hitter except for Lamb and Redmond struck out at least once.

One game at a time guys, for right now enjoy the Det/KC game, then watch “King” Felix beat the red sox…. enjoy tomorrow off and then one by one against the Sux

  23. TKinDC (subtract one from Jete's GiDP)

Did God create Manny and Jeter on the same day in sort of a Ying-Yang, Superman-Bizarro type deal?

  24. JoeT 28 in 09!!

that’s the 5th no-hitter this year that was lost on the FIRST batter that I saw (all late in the game).... and of course the 6th game was Lester

  25. kd

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

That was moose’s 21st start of the year. He’s 13-6. So I figure he need 7 wins in 10 starts. Sounds like long odds to me but I really hope he pulls through.

    I hope not

  28. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

    Brent,

You don’t actually believe Manny is really hurt do you?

Weird, but I guess my first reaction to the news wasn’t that he was trying to continue the power struggle with the front office. Besides his cup of money bit, what else points to that being the case?

  29. Ben

He might be a fun guy to hang around, and I really have no idea how serious his knew is, but he doesn’t seem like a very good teammate. He seems like a teammate that guys put up with, because he can be extremely productive and help you win games, but it doesn’t seem like he rushes off the bench or out of the clubhouse if there’s a brawl, or so thought Youkilis.

  30. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

Brent has been reading Pete’s posts and believes that Girardi is the only baseball person that lies. 8)

Haha you mean Posada’s arm wasn’t fine 3 days ago? ;-)

  31. Patrick â„¢

Man this guy is a mess. Its weird though that A-rod takes a lot of heat for some things he does yet Manny usually gets a pass. Manny does a lot more to hurt the team whereas A-rod just brings unnecessary attention to himself off the field.

  32. JoeT 28 in 09!!

Man del – you got me excited, I was hoping that was a real link lol

  33. Chris NY

“How does that equate to him not feeling like playing?”

Because that’s what Manny does. I work up in Boston and Sox fans know this, everyone knows this. When he’s unhappy, he pitches fits, refuses to play, refuses to pinch hit on his day off, and mysteriously becomes “sick” or “hurt” out of nowhere.

    Time for Manny’s summer vacation.

  36. radnom

Is it really that hard to beleive that he could actually have a bit of an injury? I mean, he is an aging slugger who was been battling nagging injuries all year. Sure, it might just be a power play on his part, but you all seem to take that for granted. I’m going to wait until I hear some murmor from Beantown regarding this before I assume Manny is just playing it up.

  37. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17)

When I said this last year no one believed me, but me originally being from Washington Heights knows for a fact Manny wouldn’t have been able to take the pressure of playing in New York City, as great as he is he can not be a focal point in a big city.

  38. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

Because that’s what Manny does. I work up in Boston and Sox fans know this, everyone knows this. When he’s unhappy, he pitches fits, refuses to play, refuses to pinch hit on his day off, and mysteriously becomes “sick” or “hurt” out of nowhere.

I’m not denying what you just said..I’ve never stepped foot in Boston and I know nothing about the people there, but what would have played out differently if he was indeed hurt? If he was hurt, then wouldn’t everybody still have the same reaction? Boy who cried wolf syndrome?

  39. Chris NY

“Is it really that hard to beleive that he could actually have a bit of an injury?”

Of course not, but have you ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf…........?

  40. Manny

NEW YORK (AP)—Mike Mussina baffled the Twins for eight innings, Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run double and the New York Yankees beat Minnesota 5-1 on Wednesday for their 10th straight home win.

Justin Christian drove in two runs with a double, and Richie Sexson had a sacrifice fly and 13 putouts and three assists at first base as the Yankees completed a 6-0 post-break homestand with sweeps of Oakland and the Twins.

Up next is a trip to Boston, with the Yankees taking their mediocre 23-23 road record into Fenway Park for three games starting Friday.
    .
and the Yankees bashing continues….we just won 6 in a row…and we are going to take our MEDIOCRE ROAD RECORD into Boston….I swear, anyone that is not a Yankees Fan can kiss my ( fill in what you like here ) !!!!!! :-(

  43. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17)

Jesus hit a walkoff PH single I’m done until later guys.

  44. Chris NY

Great minds think alike Brent… I could be wrong, but I’ll be more surprised if he is hurt than if he isn’t.

  45. Chris NY

radnom, when hasn’t he? He refused to play a couple years ago, just said he was sick. Everyone knew he wasn’t and he was laughing in the dugout while his teamates played baseball.

Like I said, it’s no secret.

  46. Rishi

Don – that “mediocre road record” is actually one of the better road records in the freaking MLB – whoever wrote that article needs to know what they are talking about

  47. Tank

I love Manny… I know hes a headache, but he is just so comical and entertaining… must be fun for Sox fans and Sox players to have him.

I’m hoping Tabata develops into a headcase with supreme talent like him. For some reason, I really want a delinquent on our team.

  48. Jimmy the Saint

When I said this last year no one believed me, but me originally being from Washington Heights knows for a fact Manny wouldn’t have been able to take the pressure of playing in New York City, as great as he is he can not be a focal point in a big city.

And Boston fans don’t take their baseball seriously? If he can handle Boston, he can handle NY.

  49. Ben

His knee might or might not be bothering him, and he might or might not be striking back at the Boston Front Office, but it’s the end of a West Coast roadtrip, and the biggest factor may simply be today’s starting pitcher.

  50. saucY

interesting find Don Vito. I’m surprised that’s coming from an AP article :o

No he can’t there is a difference in media, his friends from Washington Heights a whole lot of things I can’t get into. If your from NY or have been to the Heightz you’d understand. It’s not the same thing.

  55. Ben

...as opposed to Boston’s Home record ….

  57. radnom

“radnom, when hasn’t he? He refused to play a couple years ago, just said he was sick. Everyone knew he wasn’t”

Ok, that was one instance. Before and since then he has also be legit injured plenty of times. I’m not saying he isn’t capable of pulling a stunt like that but until people who actually know one way or another start complaining I have to say it could go either way. I never said he was definitely injured, but people on this board are making it out like there is no way in hell he is. If that is true, you will hear some rumblings out of Boston mark my word….

  58. Paul

He never ceases to amaze me…..

  60. YankeeVIP

    this is great..

i dont think anyone believes manny is really hurt. at some point even bosox fans need to be fed up with him.

for all the grief and controversy arod gets, he has never and would never pull anything like this. you have to admit, he plays hard

  61. Matt

    manny being manny

  62. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Manny could be hurt, but he does seem to dog it when the mood strikes him. He isn’t happy with the FO right now, and an easy way to get back at them is to suddenly be hurting just prior to a Yankee/Sox series.

He might feel that having Ortiz in is enough protection while he sends a message.

  63. bru

hawkins has to be the one.7 relief pitchers,no way mo,farnsworth, veras, ramirez, robertson, bruney go,it’s between hawk and giese and hawkins numbers are not as good as anyone else’s,they all have better whip, hits per innings pitched and BAA,by a landslide.the yankees bullpen is looking spectacular and most of the guys are young, veras, robertson, ramirez, bruney, that debth will help especially with boston’s bullpen falling apart.

  64. raymagnetic ®™

  66. mel

If our road record is mediocre, how do you describe Boston’s?

Felix, I know your season’s in the tank, but play for pride. Put a notch in your belt. :)

  67. bru

cashman is nuts for not signing the lefty ron mahay who wanted only 2 years when cashman only wan’t to give setup guys one year,he has like a 1.78 era and hitters are batting 2.24 against him and i don’t think he wanted more or much more per year then hawkins just an extra year, imagine if we had him,our pen would be unstopable.

  68. mel

bru this is a period, period this is bru

Laps vs. King Felix, very intriguing…

Raul Ibanez is up..he’s the guy I want the Yanks to go after. We dont need Jared Washburn and his $14 mil ‘09 salary. Ibanez may be a rental, but he’s a massive improvement over Gardner.

  72. Drive 4-5

    I meant to say Washurn’s $10 mil ‘09 salary.

  73. Buzz

cashman should not trade for fuentas why? because he might be the next ERIC GANGE From Last year the Bullpen is not the problem its been lights out they can get both lefties and righties

Number 1 thing to do right now is trade away IGAwa

I never said it was impossible he is injured, just that I’d be more surprised if it’s a real injury than I would be if he’s not… and that I can’t stand the guy.

As far as rumblings out of Boston, they’re used to his antics and they accept him for it, they gave up on complaining about it a long time ago.

  76. nyyfaninlaaland

    Pete –

I think we need a stipulation for this weekend’s series in Boston. If things don’t go our way, anyone who comments “it’s over” is banned. It’s still July people.

2 of 3 would be plenty good. Even 1 of 3 is okay. Even if they sweep it ain’t over.

  77. radnom

“As far as rumblings out of Boston, they’re used to his antics and they accept him for it, they gave up on complaining about it a long time ago.”

As someone who lives in Boston I can tell you that this is not true. No one really gets pissed off about it (I would if I were a sox fan), but he certainly gets A-rod like attention, minus the tabloid garbage.

  78. radnom

Also are you forgetting the front office publically complaining about him only a few day ago?

  79. beantown hater

What better way to say You need me,than to sit out in a Yankees and sux’s series. If the sux’s lose they pay Manny the 20 million option for sure. He’s such a tool!

  80. yankee2123

Deep down Manny always wanted to be a Yankee.

  81. Chris NY

“No one really gets pissed off about it”.

That’s exactly what I said. Read what I wrote again, what you quoted…

  82. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

If the sux’s lose they pay Manny the 20 million option for sure.

The Red Sox are going to base their 20-million dollar option on one 3-game series?

  83. JimDC

Manny hasn’t played in the OF since he did his seal act in LA where he sat on the ball and the batter reached 3rd base. Ellsbury is making plays in LF field that Manny would be waving at.

I believe Manny has seen the writing on the wall and this year he sees that the RedSox are better without him in the OF and better at DH/Ortiz without him.
