when will we get a Sox series that FOX/ESPN doesn’t snatch up and cr@p up?

I can’t stand the coverage of either network.

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

One of those match ups is not like the other!

(but two out of the three should be a whole lot of fun to watch. I’ll let you decide which ones I’m referring to)

  3. saucY July 23rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

please no joe buck on saturday

  4. Jerkface July 23rd, 2008 at 4:42 pm

You’re right Rebecca, Joba / Beckett is a complete mismatch. The Red Sox will be lucky to make it out of Fenway alive on Friday.

  5. the original SP July 23rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm

The Sunday Night ESPN guys are the worst, it’s sad the Yanks’ last regular season game at the stadium will close out with those two clowns.

  6. Ben July 23rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I’m really looking forward to Friday, actually. I hope Chamberlain keeps himself in the game and doesn’t get carried away throwing at Youk. It would be great if he could actually complete seven or eight innings, the next step in him becoming a SP.

  7. the original SP July 23rd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Yeah, I’m upset I will not be able to see the game Friday with Joba starting, I’m being dragged to the Mets v. Cards game. Maybe I’ll be anti-social and bring my radio…but then I have to listen to John Sterling which is painful beyond belief.

  8. JR Yankees July 23rd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

This weekend is going to be quite interesting. The matchups are not that bad in my opinion.

If we can back Joba with some runs for once, he should be able to just as good against the Sox as list time out. This game could go either way. Edge: even.

Saturday should be a win. We usually hit Wakefield pretty well and Pettitte has been pretty darn good. Edge: Yanks

Sunday will be a blowout I think. Too bad for Ponson, but the Red Sox will not let him off the hook with all of the hits/walks he gives up. Expect his WHIP to be through the roof come Sunday night around 9:00pm. I wish him well though. Edge: Sox

Either way, no matter what the pitching does, I hope the Yankees offense keeps up their hard work with stringing hits together and putting good at bats together.

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm

    Jerkface: :-D

  10. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm

All of the Boston pitchers are tough.

Yankees riding on a high and a shorter plane ride.

  11. Patrick â„¢ July 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Wow the mariners lineup is pathetic.

Bill Bavasi is a moron, how could he possibly think that his team would contend this year.

  12. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 4:53 pm

“It would be great if he could actually complete seven or eight innings,”

And then hit Youk on his way out.

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 4:53 pm

If we can take two of three from Boston, we’ll be tied in the loss column with the Sox.

Can’t ask for more than that.

  14. tim boat July 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

When will ESPN and FOX realize that real fans abhor their coverage of games and smarten up? We are all so sick of both networks. I’d love to see some scathing column ripping their substandard coverage and broadcasting to bring some much needed attention to this issue.

  15. tim boat July 23rd, 2008 at 4:59 pm

I wonder how many explainations we’ll get about what a knuckleball is during the Saturday game, you would think they’d assume we know by now since they spam us with the same crap every time Wake pitches.

  16. Shame Spencer July 23rd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

“When will ESPN and FOX realize that real fans abhor their coverage of games and smarten up? We are all so sick of both networks. I’d love to see some scathing column ripping their substandard coverage and broadcasting to bring some much needed attention to this issue.

totally agree.. they spend a lot of time in the post talking about how terrible mike and the mad dog are so why not write an entire piece about the torture we have to go through watching joe buck and joe morgan?

i swear, the announcers that force me to appreciate michael kay are born from the devil himself.

  17. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Hawkins giving up 1 run in a 5-0 game is nothing compared to Texas. They just lost an 8-5 lead. Gone and then some. And Lackey’s trying to give Cleveland the win, but they don’t want to take it. They’ve given back their lead and some.

I’m so in love with our pitching right now!

  18. vinny-b July 23rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

I have to say FOX, is at the very bottom. They butcher every sport. Further emphasized, when Buck is announcing.

  19. Buzz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Sir sidney going to get killed you can make that prediction right now

  20. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I’m not the type that makes predictions or guarantees, but I am thinking that the Sox take Friday and Sunday’s games, with Pettite beating Wakefield on Saturday.

Joba will certainly be tough and Beckett has not been up to his standard of last year. However Beckett does come up very tough in big games, and he will see this as a big game.

I think Yankees beat Wakefield in the second game.

Jon Lester has been pitching very effectively unlike at the beginning of the season. I think there is a good chance he defeats Ponson.

  21. G. Love July 23rd, 2008 at 5:05 pm

I predict Saturday’s game will clock in at 4 hours and 59 minutes.

  22. saucY July 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm

but Ray, you’re discounting who’ll be our starting first baseman on Sunday!

  23. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

    G Love

Even though Wakefield’s pitches are slow he does work very fast and typically his games are shorter than the other Sox starters.

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

It’s thundering here–really good thing they played a quick day game!

  25. Buzz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Youk stand so close to the plate strikes inside coner looks like a ball

  26. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

ray, you’d have a point, but based on the current state of the Yankee bullpen, the starters don’t have to beat the Red Sox starters heads up. The Yankee starters need to beat the Sox starters for 5 or 6 innings, anything over that is a plus. The Yankee bullpen is pretty untouchable. For the Red Sox, that’s not the case. Their bullpen is bellow average and the only one that semi-scares you is Papelbon. Everyone else is hittable.

  27. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Buck doesn’t bother me that much. It’s the bitter old men I can’t stand. Whining about how easy players have it now, the salaries, PEDs, etc. They may be right, but to whine about it on tv is unprofessional.

Morgan doesn’t do it much anymore, but he used to pull out the race card whenever he could.

That train in the background @ Safeco is loud and frequent.

LOL. Cleveland takes back the lead.

  28. Buzz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

joba is going to outduel beckett

  29. Del The Funkee Homosapien July 23rd, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    your beard is weird

  30. Buzz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:11 pm

    we’ll have to hit lester

  31. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Too bad the Yankees couldn’t lend a few real hitters to Seattle for their series against Boston. Seattle has a pathetic, pathetic offense.

  32. Tyler July 23rd, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Mel… I think those are boats making that noise off the water… not trains

  33. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:13 pm

    ray,

I agree with you about Lester, unless The Big Sexy can take him deep lol.

But I disagree about Friday night’s game. Beckett can be had this year. He’s already given up 15 homers. He only gave up 17 all last year. If the Yanks can get a lead on him by the 6th and it comes down to the bullpens, I like the Yankees’ chances. I’m looking forward to the matchup. It should be fun.

  34. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:14 pm

    DFox

Of late the Sox bullpen has certainly been ineffective notwithstanding Peter Gammons affirmations!!

However, unlike early in the season the Sox starters have been going deeper into the games. Beckett lost his last game but did pitch a complete game. I believe both Lester and Dice-K pitched into the eighth inning in their last starts.

But you make a good point that the Sox bullpen has been awful, while the Yankees bullpen has become quite effective.

I think it will be a good series this weekend.

  35. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm

    Tyler,

Really? Haha. It does kind of sound like a really loud foghorn. What kind of boats? Steamers?

  36. #9 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm

“I predict Saturday’s game will clock in at 4 hours and 59 minutes.”

That’s not counting commercials of course.

  37. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    Drive 4-5

You could very well be right about Friday night’s game. I know that Chamberlain is very good. Beckett has indeed been less effective this year, but I think he will pitch good this weekend.

In any case, you are correct that it will be a good series.

  38. Del The Funkee Homosapien July 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Peter Gammons shoves Dustin Pedroia up his rear end Richard Gere style….I have proof.

  39. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm

    darn you Ichiro!

  40. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Wow! Ichiro robbed JD Drew. Gotta watch the highlight.

  41. ray (sox fan) July 23rd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Ichiro both takes away…..and then gives back with his error.

  42. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Ichiro just made a great catch to rob JD Drew of a 3 run homer. Then on the next at bat he booted Pukalis’ single and 2 runs scored.

  43. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 5:26 pm

J Manuel was just on FAN. Said if Santana asks for he ball in the 9th he gets it. How happy is Santana over in Queens. I think Manuel should take that opp. to call out his Wagnerless bullpen at that point.

  44. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

There should be no expression of preference when it comes to announcers.

    Michael Kay: D
    John Sterling: F
Buck and McCarver: D- (factual errors, exaggeration of McCarver’s “knowledge” of the game, blithe recitation of baseball “wisdom” that has no basis in reality)
Morgan and Miller: D (Joe Morgan has parlayed an HOF career into a broadcasting and analysis “career” for which he is wholly unsuited. He is basically retarded.)

If you want to know how it’s done, listen to the Reds radio broadcast team. Marty Brennaman is fantastic.

Mike Shannon for the Cards is a bit more dopey, but also very good.

Vin Scully is top-notch on KXTA.

The Yankees have awful, awful announcers who reflect the boorish personalities of ownership. It’s depressing that the team that I love has a media empire that takes its jobs as seriously and fearfully as mid-level Chinese propaganda officials.

  45. Del The Funkee Homosapien July 23rd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Kevin Youcouldlickthis….God, I cant stand him

  46. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    Hey Westr Coast Fan.

do you really think we like Kay and Sterling-Waldman? Pay attention. Most people dont like Buck/McCarver and Morgan. Miller is fine

  47. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:31 pm

If you want examples, watch the FOX game on Saturday. They will spend more time discussing

    1) which celebrities happen to be in attendance
    2) FOX’s mediocre summer sweeps lineup
    3) Tim McCarver’s irrelevant and half-baked predictions for the upcoming NFL season
    4) nonsensical theories that include the inane suggestion that a single can be more productive than a home run
    5) jokes or current events that they barely understand

    than they will the game

if you listen to the radio, you’ll be subjected to Suzyn’s nasal braying for the full 3.5 hours. Literally no let up.

Listen to Marty Brennaman call a game. It’s worth subscribing to XM or getting the MLB service. He let’s important moments speak for themselves. We get crowd noise rather than ranting which reminds us, hey, we’re listening to a baseball game. His insights are good. He doesn’t insult your intelligence by explaining what a hit-and-run is every time the opportunity presents itself.

  48. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

You’re kidding right? He wanted to be the manager, he needs to take f’n responsibility. What a loser.

He should say, “Santana gave us 8 strong, 2 run innings, was over 100 pitches, so we turned it over to the pen. We didn’t get the job done, so we gotta forget about it and worry about the next game.”

  49. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Considering the Mets were playing an important game against their rival, Johan, at 105 pitches and Billy Wagner having asked out, should have demanded the ball for the 9th.

Still, you can’t pin the loss on anyone but Mr. Taxi Cab himself.

  50. Yankees Ben July 23rd, 2008 at 5:33 pm

John against to the other announcers that are around in baseball, and i get chance to listen to them having the Gameday Audio package, Sterling is pretty good, not great in actual game calling, but at least he puts you in the game with his enthusiasm.

  51. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    Seattle’s really horrible, aren’t they?

  52. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Jon Miller is fine, but he should have enough self-respect to resign. Seriously, he has to explain to Joe Morgan the game at which Morgan once excelled. Talk about bad work conditions. It’s like calling the game with an overeager 9 year-old.

  53. Central CT Yankee July 23rd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

How funny would it be if this guy gets traded to Boston

    http://arizona.diamondbacks.ml....._id=434438

  54. Yankees Ben July 23rd, 2008 at 5:35 pm

On an other note don’t you guys think Manny is trying to help us, first striking out on 3 pitches against Rivera in the 9th, now with his knee issue, maybe he wants the yanks to pick him up next season. Any thoughts? LOL!

  55. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

No, John Sterling is terrible. He’s a homer hack. If there’s a grading curve, he probably passes because there are some real bad announcers, especially down in Florida. The White Sox are pretty brutal.

But I grade them as they are, even if it means that 15 teams rate an F. The difference is that most “historic” teams have very solid crews: Reds, Cards, Tigers, etc.

As far as excitement, Marty and Mike get plenty excited. Beyond that, I understand baseball, and take a rooting interest in the game. I don’t need a teleprompter or APPLAUSE sign to tell me when to get into it.

  56. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:39 pm

    John_Halfz,

You don’t know bad announcers till you’re forced to listen to Jerry Remy and Don Orsilla of the Red Sox. It’s hard to say what is more nauseating, listening to Remy talk derisively about the opponent’s players or watching Orsilla shamelessly pander to Remy’s pathetic attempts at humor.

You really wonder how Orsilla can look at himself in the mirror. He doesnt have an original thought in his head and is obviously there to promote Remy.

Remy finds something derisive to say about every team ( except Boston) every game. I find most gratifying his early season boast about how much better Papelbon is than Mariano. His exact quot was was “Mariano is no longer a strikeout pitcher”. Well “Remdog”, how does 54 strikeouts vs 4 walks in 44 innings sound?

  57. Yankees Ben July 23rd, 2008 at 5:39 pm

oh talk about the white sox they sound like broadcasting a funeral

  58. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Remy and Orsilla are pretty obnoxious. The radio team, on the other hand, puts the Yankees to shame. Castiglione is a good old-timer, and his call of Boone’s HR (how depressing is it that I chose to listen to the Red Sox that night) was priceless.

  59. Yankee Trader July 23rd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

    Rumors:
Humberto Sanchez for Fuentes. Others included? Would hate to give up Sanchez-was #2 prospect with Detroit in deal for Sheffield and Fuentes likely to decline arbitration. Would the draft picks be worth it?

Price for Nady comes down. Would like a righty outfielder, and would like not to resign Abreu. However, Posada who comes off the DH after the trading deadline, wants to try hitting and stay on the roster as a DH, which might cause the Yankee brass not to trade for Nady, unless they deal Abreu or Melky.

Any word on Washburn for Igawa and AA prospect?
Would like Yankees to expand the deal and get Ichiro to replace Abreu/Melky.

  60. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Mel, you’re correct. There is a train station and tracks that run just outside of Safeco.

  61. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Don’t hate on Remy too bad. He’s just a mediocre former infielder who lives vicariously through the current Sox.

  62. tim boat July 23rd, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Sterling was once a great broadcaster – like 7 years ago maybe. But now he tries to hard to out do himself, the “Bern baby Bern” line, which in its own right was catchy and original gave way to whole onslaught of cheesy alliterations and hokey lines. Just check Sterling’s wikipedia page for the whole list of ‘em. The worst is “an A-bomb from A-Rod” that’s just horrible coupled with the way he says it. If Suzyn Waldman just called the game and let everything else speak for itself and wasn’t so over the top, she wouldn’t be half as bad as she is now.

Michael Kay? Well he just needs to go back on radio, coupled with the fact he likes to bring up the same fact 2 or 3 times a game every game, like right now it’s how no Yankee reliever ranks top 15 in appeareances (OKAY WE GET IT!).

Ken Singleton and Flash are pretty good. Al Leiter? Well I have a tough time warming up to him – he should be calling Mets games on SNY. O’Neill isn’t polished enough. But I’d rather take any of the above over Joe Morgan, Joe Buck, and Tim McCarver.

McCarver wasn’t so bad when he worked for the Yankees – if he’s just doing play by play and not color and commentary (which results in most of his unintelligent and undecepheriable drivel) but in his role with Fox he is horrible.

  63. John_Halfz July 23rd, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Kaat was by far the best. Singleton, I think, was a little better in the past, and is now trying too hard to be cute and a homer, per YES directive.

Cone is decent. They really miss Bobby M, too.

  64. nyyfaninlaaland July 23rd, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Completely off topic here – but Christian Garcia threw his first rehab outing – not too well – in GC the other day. Hopefully he can finish out a healthy and good year.

Posted this in prior dstring, repeat here:

    “Pete –

I think we need a stipulation for this weekend’s series in Boston. If things don’t go our way, anyone who comments “it’s over” is banned. It’s still July people.

2 of 3 would be plenty good. Even 1 of 3 is okay. Even if they sweep it ain’t over.”

    Agreed?

  65. radnom July 23rd, 2008 at 5:48 pm

“Michael Kay? Well he just needs to go back on radio, coupled with the fact he likes to bring up the same fact 2 or 3 times a game every game, like right now it’s how no Yankee reliever ranks top 15 in appeareances (OKAY WE GET IT!).”

ugh, yeah. He has like 10-15 stories that he tells at every possible opportunity. Some of them are in the form of “insightful questions” which he has asked a million times and are mostly stupid anyway. And lets not forget “He just tied a major leauge record…with three putouts in one inning” STFU

  66. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:48 pm

I cant stand listening to Sterling and Waldman. The Red Sox are very hard to listen to, but not as bad. Castiglione can be a screamer and Dave O’Brien is boring.

John Miller was a great radio announcer when he was with the Orioles. Too bad ESPN and Joe Morgan have brought him down to their level.

  67. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 5:49 pm

I think YES scares away or just doesn’t want a real talent in the booth.Too risque for their propoganda state. Kay is supposed to be the pro but he’s a hack. I like Singleton. Nice voice too. Flaherty’s not bad but a little boring. The other guys get by because they have connections to the Yanks. And they’re sometimes funny. I miss Jim Kaat. I see now he does games for TBS.

  68. nyyfaninlaaland July 23rd, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Gotta say it- I’d love to be sittin’ in a Fenway luxury suite Sunday night with a gin and tonic (splash of bitters please) in hand. That’s livin’!

  70. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Trader, why are you and others so anxious to turn the Yankees into a predominantly right handed hitting team? If Giambi leaves at the end of the year, NYY is left with Damon and Cano from the left side and minimal power in a left handed hitter’s park?

  71. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    Agreed

As long as the Yankees take one out of three they’ll be okay; two out of three then they’ll be tied in the loss column.

Can’t ask for much more than that.

  72. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Yeah Kay was better on radio. I love the way he still does the whole interlocking NY thing and no name… of course schtick. It’s like ” No kidding s**t for brains. Its’s TV. We can see”

  73. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    John_Halfz,

Remy is a bufoon. He’s a Scooter wannabe.

The difference between Scooter and Remy is that Phil Rizzuto didnt have a mean bone in his body and his antics were truly spontaneous. Remy, on the other hand, has his props (including his dolls and Orsilla), isn’t the least bit spontaneous and thinks that by dissing the opponent it makes him look smarter. Jerry Remy is nothing but a self promoting fool.

  74. vinny-b July 23rd, 2008 at 5:58 pm

believe am the only person, who actually likes Morgan. Don’t care for miller, tho. And his over-pronounciation of spanish words.

    as long as we’re critiquing:

    Costas – a pleasure

    Vin Sculley – legend

Bob Uecker – suprisingly, was one fine baseball announcer, when i followed the brewers.

Musburger – IMO, the greatest annoucer of all-time. Any sport.

  75. E-Man July 23rd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

When ever John Miller is doing the ESPN games, I feel like I’m watching golf.

Joe Buck is the worst announcer ever though.. or is clone brother Chip Carey.

  76. pat July 23rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Steve Phillips said on the radio yesterday that him, Miller and Hershiser are doing the Sunday night game. Morgan has HOF stuff to do Sunday.

  77. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Raul Ibanez just took Bucholz deep. I’ll keep saying it…if the Yanks get Washburn, they’ve gotten the wrong Mariner.Ibanez would look great in the 7 hole in the Yankee lineup.

  78. Peter Abraham July 23rd, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I really don’t have time to babysit the comment section.

    1. Do not use obscene words in posts or part of obscene words. If you are too stupid to communicate without doing that, go someplace else.

    2. Do engage Red Sox trolls. Then you become just as stupid as the troll. Ignore them and they will go away.

    3. Please do not use crude terms or sexual references in your posts or in your name. Try and have a little class. We have all sorts of people reading this blog and the vast majority are decent people.

If you can’t abide by these simple rules, go someplace else.

    Thanks.

“As long as the Yankees take one out of three they’ll be okay; two out of three then they’ll be tied in the loss column.
Can’t ask for much more than that.”

    Speak for yourself, Rebecca.

    I’m asking for a sweep.

Quite the long shot, I know, but I’m asking.

  81. Timmy Lupus July 23rd, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Take a look at who’s behind the dish for the Indians. Mario himself, gone but not forgotten.

  82. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Sigmund: I’m hoping for a sweep, but i’m not going to get crushed if they don’t sweep.

Well, I might. But that’s not the point.

  83. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Keep the faith Rebecca. Remember the last year’s August Boston Massacre!

  84. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Rebecca, Mathis has a lot of power, but, strikes out a ton. He plays part time, and even with his 4-4, is only hitting .229. The one I’d like to see with the Yanks is 1st baseman, Casey Kotchman, who has a great glove, hits left handed, hits for average and kills the Yanks at “The Big Ballpark In The Bronx”. He’s 5-5 today. If the rumors are true about the angels wanting Teixiera, Kotchman will be on the block.

  85. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Drive: How could I forget?! :-D

  86. Sigmund July 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Yeah, I won’t be crushed either, Rebecca. That home record by the Sox is quite daunting. I’m just recalling a delicious five-game sweep by the Yanks in Fenway a couple of years back (I believe it was five games). Just makes me smile to think about. Kinda makes me greedy. But, you’re right, a sweep is a long, long shot. One game (one inning) at a time. Shaping up to be a good weekend – that first game is the one I’m most interested in. Winner of that one means a lot, to me.

  87. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

They do seem primed for a mini-massacre.

  88. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:19 pm

    GB7,

Kotcham would be a terrific pick up, but I doubt that the Yankees have enough minor league talent to get him. I don’t see anyone on the major league roster that fills a need for the Angels.

  89. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Drive: The Angels kind of have the same needs we do.

  90. Drive 4-5 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:25 pm

For all the talk about the depth of our minor league system, it IS pretty hard to believe we really have only 2 outfield prospects, Austin Jackson and Brett Gardner above AA and no power hitters at all above Single A.

  91. blackdragon905 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:26 pm

i dunno if this has been mentioned already but if anybody is interested, mlb extra innings is having a free preview so if u wanna watch the sox game on tv, u can for free, it might just be for directv, not sure

  92. Jorge Steinbrenner July 23rd, 2008 at 6:28 pm

anyone just catch Buster Olney on Michael Kay? i actually found him incredibly refreshing when talking about the Yanks today and them both making sure they’re development ducks are in order this year AND being more open to moving certain guys.

while i’m sure some posters may have not liked what they heard, it’s good to hear that someone else believes the Yanks are still looking at the bigger picture.

that being said, this team can get the job done, and will this weekend. let’s hope for, at least, two out of three.

  93. vinny-b July 23rd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

jorge: can you provide a summary, of what Buster said?

  94. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

    Thanks blackdragon

  95. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Hey, thanks blackdragon905, IO has it too. Hopefully I’ll get to watch the Sox lose.

  96. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 6:33 pm

The Red Sox home record doesn’t worry me; the Yankees seem to play well enough there to neutralize that somewhat. I’m expecting three competitive games (as usual) and hoping the Yanks prevail.

That 5-game massacre was two Augusts ago and 2 of those games were a double header. We were at my niece’s wedding and I remember they had won the first game, and so I was resigned to a split and then after the wedding finding out they had won (was it in uber-exciting fashion????) the nightcap for a doubleheader sweep. Beautiful!

  97. 86w183 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Ibanez would be fine as a replacement for Abreu, but even with Matsui out the need remains for a RH bat over a LH.

FWIW I think one problem on YES is there are tooooooo many voices… thus other than Kay, there is not enough consistent work for the others to improve. O’Neil has the potential to be great with his insights and understated sarcasm, but we don’t hear him enough. Singleton should only do color, not PBP and Cone, Leiter and Flaherty all seem afraid to offend.

I enjoyed Kaat and Kay… Kitty was so good and he and Michael had such good on-air chemistry they didn’t have to manufacture inane commentary.

As for radio, I can only assume those two have some very incriminating pictures of someone in a position of authority.

  98. David Cone's Labrum July 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

The Mariners really are anemic – wow. No fight in that offense.

  99. Paulio July 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Soon to be Yank Jose Vidro just tied it.

  100. David Cone's Labrum July 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

ahem – I take that back – homerun just tied the game. My bad.

  101. YankeeFanInVermont July 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Vidro’s 2-run shot just tied the Sox, 3-3!

  102. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    GB7,

    Thanks re: the train info.

We’ve made up a lot of ground in a very short time. That’s how quickly fortunes can change.

Re: this weekend hope for the best, prepare for the worst and you won’t be disappointed.

(I’m superstitious, so I won’t tell you what I really think)

  103. S.A.- I still believe in this team July 23rd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    Nice job Vidro

  104. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    Boston Seattle now tied

  105. 86w183 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    Drive 4-5—-

Thank the Tampa mafia for wasting elite picks on David Parrish, John Ford Griffin, Carl Henry, Estee Harris, Tim Battle, Jonathan Poterson and others…

At least there are some interesting position players in Charleston and lots of RH arms….

  106. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Agree about too many voices and O’Neil.

  107. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 6:41 pm

I don’t make predictions and I don’t listen to predictions. I’m with mel – hope for the best, prepared for the worst. And it’s true, you are then never disappointed, and often times left quite happy. Whereas, if you keep predicting “sweep,” most of the time you’re disappointed and can’t enjoy the moment.

    Let’s go Mariners!

Safeco is a really nice stadium.

Thundering loudly here in Central NJ. Glad the game was this afternoon. (Yay, Mooooose!)

  108. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Drive, the Angels would have to do something with Kotchman if they get Teixiera. They have 65 million tied up in the outfield with 4 players, assuming that they resign Anderson and Guerrero. NYY has a lot of young relief pitchers to move and a few young starters. A match might be tough to find between the two teams, but, not impossible. If they get Teixiera, they’ve almost certainly need to resign Guerrero if only for protection. Cutting loose Anderson would be painful for the fans and the team, I think, but, probably the only sensible thing for them to do. Mainly, I was just mumbling to myself, though.

  109. Nibs July 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Why would the Angels deal with the Yankees?

    Seriously.

  110. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I think O’Neill isn’t ready to commit to more than a few games a season. Perhaps the other ex-players also enjoy that arrangement – they get to stay in baseball but not be away from their families, especially on long road trips.

I waiver back-and-forth between the desire for a single team of announcers and the round robin they play. Some of the mixes are quite good and I always like Singleton. Leiter’s an interesting guy and he’s growing on me – I like how he challenges Kay, but I think Kay is starting to show his annoyance or pique regarding Leiter.

I think Suzyn Waldman would be much better if she didn’t have to defer to Sterling all the time, but I don’t know that we’ll ever get to find out. She doesn’t run that show. And radio is so overwhelmed with sponsorships that they really can’t call a clean game – too many interruptions. Sterling just seems too “been there, done that,” for my taste, but he does have his moments. If only he’d learn to distinguish a semi-long fly ball from a homerun, he’d be semi-okay!

  111. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Doreen and Mel: As long as you always hope.

    That’s all optimism is.

    Hope.

  112. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Drive, right now, the only semi-prospect hitting for some power (finally), and bringing his average up a little at a time, is Eric Duncan. It’s about his last year in the system, I think, though. Jackson could be an 18-22 homer type within 2-3 years. You’re correct, though…the real power is in Charleston with Suttle, Montero and Brandon Laird and, to a lesser extent, Tampa. I had hopes for Fortenberry, but, he’s really struggled this year, although injuries have slowed him down. Injuries have gotten Hillingoss, too. NYY does have a lot of young catching who are beginning to hit, too. It’s fast becoming a trade chip commodity by next year.

  113. stuart July 23rd, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Kotchman is not getting traded….He is young, cheap, and never srikes out….

Anderson will not be picked up next yr. by the angels.. I know one of the owners of the Angels.. they have a budget…

the angels play different baseball then the Yanks…

texeira may be an angel but next yr. they are not giving up 3 or 4 prospects for a possible rental…

  114. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Well, Rebecca, as the song goes …

Ya gotta have hope, mustn’t sit around and mope!

(From Damn Yankees, You Gotta Have Heart)

  115. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Still thinking about what I’d give up to have Seattle take this game…

That’d make for a really long plane ride back to Boston.

  116. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Absolutley pouring here.

    I am terrified.

    Seriously. Terrified.

    Stupid thunderstorm phobia…

  117. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 6:57 pm

I’m going on printed rumors, Stuart Little. Did I tell you that I know everybody? Everybody tells me the same thing.

  118. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 6:58 pm

    Doreen,

What did we come up with? Instead of being gloom and doom?

  119. pat July 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Yanks went into the Oakland series 1 game behind them in the WC and came out of the series 2 ahead of them.

Yanks went into the Twins series 2 behind them for the WC and came out of the series 1 up on them.

    Chip, chip, chip……..

  120. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm

    Mel -

I forgot!!!! Let me think about it.

  121. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:00 pm

How about ‘shrooms and booms, Mel? The ‘shrooms are in case the home runs don’t boom often in Boston for NYY, this weekend.

  122. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Oh look, JJ Putz is back…

  123. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:01 pm

I know happy and sappy was one of them, but we came up with a better one.

Although, I think the guys would prefer if we were cute and mute.

  124. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

    GB7,

    I prefer Blooms and Brooms.

Poor Alex, it’s going to be bad. Cone bras galore in the stands.

  125. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

    Did it rhyme?

  126. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

How in the world can Dave Neihous get into the announcer’s wing of the HOF calling games for Seattle, but, Frank Messer, Bill White or Jim Kaat can’t?

  127. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:04 pm

mel: Psssh. They should know by now that it’s the girls that make LoHud run!

We’re the only ones that stay calm when everyone else gets all heated about whether Bronson Arroyo or Johan Santana is the better fit…

  128. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Mel, are you saying that you have incriminating pix of Rodriguez and David Cone wearing bras? Disgusting.

  129. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Well, happy and sappy it sure wasn’t. Loud and Proud?

  130. Terry from New Hampshire July 23rd, 2008 at 7:07 pm

You guys talk about the pitching matchup’s, but the real story could be the return of Ortiz and the status of Manny with his knee. Joba will show us a glimpse of the ace he will become because Beckett IMO hasn’t been dominant this year and the Yanks offense is starting to come around. Just keep Pedroia off base.

  131. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Let’s hope Seattle could somehow find a way to win this game. That would be icing on the cake going into the series on Friday.

  132. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I know it was’t chippy and dippy, although that’s the way I feel sometimes…

  133. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm

    GB7,

I know you’re a dinosaur, but do you seriously not know what I’m talking about?

  134. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Chamberlain will make Ortiz cry when he jams him all day long and that wrist starts squealing “Uncle”.

  135. DFox July 23rd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

“Chamberlain will make Ortiz cry when he jams him all day long and that wrist starts squealing “Uncle”.”

Seriously, when that roided up broken down wrist gets jammed with a 99mph fastball it’ll probably shatter into a million little pieces and that’ll be the end of Ortiz.

  136. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Yeah, I do Mel. Just couldn’t pass it up, though, I probably should have. Madonna was never a favorite. From that era, I preferred Pat Benatar, Deborah Harry and Annie Lennox.

  137. Chris N. July 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Yikes. Masterson is looking scary in a relief role. 8 outs in 27 pitches.

  138. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Ortiz is a big mystery to me. From all accounts he’s not the same player he was in Minny. Different name, different body, and different production. I hate it. We got Giambi on the down swing.

  139. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:14 pm

    GB7,

Blondie is one of my all-time faves. Debi Harry was a working girl, no?

  140. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

God, I’d love to see Brandon Morrow make it to Yankee pinstripes.

  141. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    I love Mike Mussina.

“Yes, it sealed the victory — the Yankees’ sixth straight — and placed the team a season-high 11 games above .500 heading into three-game series with the Red Sox in Boston beginning Friday, but the more important strikeout was an inning earlier, with two outs and a runner on second and Mussina near his end.

    Giardi visited the mound.

“He really didn’t say much,” Mussina recalled. “I kind of said, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘Are you afraid of 100 pitches?’ Because I turned and looked at the scoreboard and it said 99. I said, ‘Are you afraid of 100?’ He said, ‘What, you want to pitch to this guy?’ I said, ‘Yeah, let’s go. Get out of here.’ He said, ‘All right.’ That was it.”"

  142. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Hey, Brewers picked up Jay “Mitchell Report” Gibbons.

  143. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Mel, Deborah Harry wasn’t a great voice, but, she was entertaining and her songs were perfect for her type of singing. She also looked great in a Bunny suit.

  144. jennifer- I got your back Girardi July 23rd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Memo to Johan, look what Moose said.

  145. sunny615 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:19 pm

. The Yankees are looking for catching – Rosenthal and Jon Heyman do not agree with Peter Abraham. Rosenthal says the Yanks have expressed interest in Gerald Laird and Miguel Olivo. The Rangers want young pitching for Laird, however.
. Jarrod Washburn’s limited no-trade protection includes the Yankees. He might want compensation to waive that, putting him out of the Yanks’ price range. Washburn, a Boras client, wouldn’t mind pitching in New York though. The Mariners are looking for young pitching for him. It sounds like the Yankees aren’t willing to eat the entire contract and send good prospects.
. The Yankees may explore other trades, and are said to have interest in A.J. Burnett and Bronson Arroyo.

    ————-
not thrilled with any of these really.

  146. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

I think I have a crush on Moose.

  147. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    jennifer,

Not fair. Johan didn’t go out in the 9th. If he were on the mound he’d want to finish the inning. He left a 5-2 game with 3 outs to go.

What Manuel said is rididulous. Johan gives him 8 innings of 2 run ball, and Manuel throws Johan under the bus? Is he saying that Johan was asked and refused? Or are you doing the sensible thing by giving it to the pen?

If I were Santana, I’d be pissed after hearing Charlie’s statements. As if it’s Johan’s fault they lost the game.

  148. pat July 23rd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    From NYPOST.com

“A three-run sixth inning was highlighted by Rodriguez’s two-run double that scored Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu, who raced through third-base coach Bobby Meacham’s stop sign.”

  149. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

    Debbie Harry/Blondie – loved her/them.

  150. Diane July 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Can the Mariners pull this out or what?

  151. Jorge Steinbrenner July 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

“jorge: can you provide a summary, of what Buster said?”

wish i could, but work had me going in and out of it. to be honest with you, the brief two sentences i gave pretty much summarizes the point of it. he made reference to Kennedy specifically as the type of player who was called “off-limits” last year, but would be considered more as a piece for the right deal if we can continue to keep the rest of the organization in the right direction.

  152. Hanson July 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

“Yankees minor league-shortstop Alberto Gonzalez might become an option for the Dodgers if they can’t land the Pirates’ Jack Wilson or another more established shortstop like David Eckstein.”

    AG for Lowe?

  153. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

It’s Jerry Manuel. Charlie’s the Phillies Mngr.

  154. Doreen July 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Good ole Miguel Cairo just walked with 2 out.

  155. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Rebecca, I think Mussina is healthy for the first time in years, and, he’s having fun again. I think he gets a big charge out of using his brains and reinventing his way of pitching and, even, moreso, proving everyone wrong, especially the media. His wry sense of humor has really surfaced this year. His book, “Living On The Black” is a good read, by the way. So is Jim Kaat’s book, “Still Pitching:Musings From The Mound and Microphone”.

  156. sunny615 July 23rd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

no way the dodgers give away lowe for gonzo straight up. They’d want another prospect at the minimum.

  157. mel July 23rd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

Thanks. Duh, they don’t look anything like each other.

  158. Poo Poo July 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Torre seems to really like the Attorney General.

  159. OldYanksFan July 23rd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

How can Seattle lose. They have MIGGY CAIRO playing 1B!

  160. vinny-b July 23rd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

jorge: thank you, for the word.

I do believe Kennedy should be on the table.

  161. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Ian O Conor on Fox Sports wrote a critical article about Torre’s performance with the Dodgers.

  162. vinny-b July 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm

how much better is Lowe, then Washburn?

    pitching in yankee stadium.

  163. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2008 at 7:50 pm

I think Lowe is better. He obviously can pitch in big games too. Remember him in 2004. He was sort of the difference in that series

  164. Where is Blomberg? July 23rd, 2008 at 8:10 pm

    Think Blown Save
    Bo Sox

  165. tim boat July 23rd, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Yankees are said to have interest in Bronson Arroyo? Says who? Mike Francesca? Gimme a break.

  166. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *17) July 23rd, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Heyman is Francesa’s boy toy you knew Arroyo’s name would slip in there somehow..but please giving prospects for that guy would be a waste.

But notice I said it a long time ago Miguel Olivo :)

  167. lil' m July 23rd, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I think the YES announcer teams started out as very good and have only gotten better in the past two seasons. I really enjoy their coverage and have been spoiled by it. Don’t have a problem with the Fox announcer team per se. However, Fox’s ADHD production style (in-game interviews with the managers in the dugout, incomprehensible weirdo graphics, nonstop shilling for every show on Fox’s schedule) does nothing to improve enjoyment or understanding of the game. I can only guess that someone who hates baseball dreamed up the lunacy that is slapping a headset on a manager while he’s working and asking him questions best left for the post- or pregame shows. Amazing that MLB went along with it.

  168. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 23rd, 2008 at 9:40 pm

    sweeeeeeeeeeeeeep

  169. Matthew Cohen July 23rd, 2008 at 10:09 pm

why are they not skipping Ponson’s start? The Sox will pound him.
