The meeting is over in Tampa

Peter Abraham
July
24

The big meeting is over at Steinbrenner Field. Hank stopped to talk. This from the AP:

“We covered everything, including (Barry) Bonds,” he said. Steinbrenner wouldn’t say if the Yankees are interested in Bonds, but it appears unlikely the team will pursue him.

Steinbrenner declined to get into specifics about potential trades, but said “there’s a couple things that might be promising.”

Hopefully the release of Latroy Hawkins was at least discussed.

  2. Doug

    Any word on bruney?

  3. Tank

    I heart hank

  4. S.A.- I still believe in this team

So now we wait and wonder..

  5. tim boat

Even if Bruney isn’t ready, and I’ve never been sold on him anyway since his command is iffey, bring up Scott Strickland – he’s been awesome this year and was an effective MLB pitcher before injuries took their tool.

Anything to get rid of Latroy and Strickland ain’t a bad choice.

  6. jay destro

i was at the meeting, we had punch and pie

  7. pat

“Among the players the Yankees are thought to be looking at are San Francisco catcher Bengie Molina” from AP

That would make playing Name That Molina a little more challenging.

  8. Joe

Patterson, once back from sickness, deserves an extended shot. Absolutely dominant minor league track record.

  9. Joe

Also, Bruney and his career track record don’t paint an “iffey” command picture…it’s downright awful.

  10. Ben

I hope the Yankees use their resources to reunite all three Molina brothers for the stretch run against the AL East.

  11. GreenBeret7

Jay, I assume that Hank got punched by Hal after throwing the pie on the floor.

  12. UtilityMan

    Derek Lowe or Jarrod Washburn???

Looks like the Tigers are ready to send Sheff packing.
Gonna have to eat so $$$ on any deal.

  13. Jorge Tabata

So, if we get Washburn who does he replace… Ponson or Rasner?

  14. UtilityMan

    Good Question Jorge Tabata

Ponson has been pretty good…but I fear a blow up soon.

  15. Wolf In Pinstripes

Carl Pavano was there to serve the punch and pie. Got him a nice little crisp white coat and gloves and everything.

  16. miller

I agree on Bruney. He was off to the best start of career before he got hurt. He was great because he was beating people by throwing his FB by people. His velocity is down and he needs to beat people with location. Locating his pitches has never been his strength.

  17. Phil

Don’t you mean who does he become… Ponson or Rasner? All three are 100+ pitches over 5ip guys.

  18. Rishi

    voice of reason

  19. billy

So if IPK tosses a no-hitter tonight, does that mean he gets a shot in the Bronx soon?

  20. GreenBeret7

Well, better that Pavano serve the punch and pie. Had he eaten the pie, he would have broken a tooth and choked to death.

  21. miller

Bruney gave up three hits in an innong today. He’s not ready for the Sox for sure. The pen has been deaing so they don’t need someone who isn’t ready.

“Among the players the Yankees are thought to be looking at are San Francisco catcher Bengie Molina” from AP

Oooh! Can we get all three Molinas?!

    Please?!

You can never have enough Molinas!

  23. rconn23

“Ponson has been pretty good…but I fear a blow up soon.”

Sunday’s a good bet for that. He hasn’t been good, he’s been incredibly fortunate.

  24. G. Love

I somehow get the feeling that it burn Jorge to his core to see Bengie Molina behind home plate in a Yankees uniform.

That said, I like a double shot of Molina behind the plate provided we don’t have to give up much to get him.

  25. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

    That Molina atleast hits.

  26. miller

“Oooh! Can we get all three Molinas?!

    Please?!

You can never have enough Molinas!”

Might as well bring in theic cousin Alfred. He was great in The Hoax.

  27. billy

    IPK no-no through 5. lol

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    What?

    I mean.

Have Bengie hit, have Jose catch…it’s a win/win situation!

  29. UtilityMan

    rconn23

True he has been fortunate…AND I feel Sunday Nite could be a decision maker.

  30. Jorge Tabata

Good job by IPK… upping his value before the deadline.

  31. Stormrider6

Bengie hits, Jose catches, and we change Brett’s last name so he can run?

  32. Tank

I’d imagine the Giants will want a lot if they are trading us their clean-up hitter.

  33. UtilityMan

Yadier is tougher….he took that shot at home a month ago,and still threw the ball to third.

  34. billy

    “True he has been fortunate”

That is and understatement. He needs to pitch his balls off against the Sox. They are going to lay off more than most of the teams he has gone against lately. He’s still better than Razzle Dazzle.

  35. Buddy Biancalana

Benjie Molina is a really interesting option. He signed thru 2009 as protection for Jorge. If Jorge is fine they can deal him.

  36. NongEyeJon

I have a feeling the Yanks have totally soured on IPK. Otherwise, his recent pitching at AAA would suggest he’d be up here and Rasner would be back down.

  37. Jeff NJ

Hank is taking one for MLB by saying he is considering Bonds, trying to show there is no collusion against signing him. Kind of like when teams interview an African American for manager even though they have a retread old white guy ready to be hired.

I think if I would trade, I would revisit Houston and try and get Oswalt and Wigginton. They have Wolf now so they have a new ace. You could probably get that for Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera.

  38. NongEyeJon

Oswalt is hurt and on the DL I believe.

  39. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Jeff he has a NTC to NY and Houston isn’t dealing him.

  40. Buzz

    No-No through 6th but 73 pitches

  41. Someone Else

“I hope the Yankees use their resources to reunite all three Molina brothers for the stretch run against the AL East.”

I think Yadier would be about as available as, say, Cano.

  42. Buddy Biancalana

Oswalt is back from the DL on Monday.

  43. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

As for the Bonds rumors ..Buster Olney told ESPN, a Yankees source told him “it is highly unlikely”

  44. billy

“I have a feeling the Yanks have totally soured on IPK. Otherwise, his recent pitching at AAA would suggest he’d be up here and Rasner would be back down.”

You’re wrong buddy. He’s only pitched four times since July 3. Two innings, then four, then five, and seven in his last game b4 tonight. That suggests nothing or it suggests that he’s not ready.

  45. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

I hope Kennedy picks up that trade stock, Salty and Bradley would put a smile to my face.

  46. Glenn

When Hank says “there’s a couple of things that might be promising”, it translates into things will hinge somewhat on how the team does this weekend.
Cashman is not likely to pull the trigger on significant moves until mid-week unless it’s a deal he can’t refuse.

  47. billy

    “No-No through 6th but 73 pitches”

Since when is 73 pitches through 6 bad. About 10 an inning is great.

  48. RhapsodyInBlue

We have a better chance of getting the three Marx brothers than the Molina brothers.

  49. rconn23

Ponson is nothing more than something to fill a hole. The bats have come alive for his starts so far, but I’m honestly not sure I can stomach him starting in Fenway. I really can’t.

If he doesn’t keep the ball down, he won’t last 2 innings.

Saw someone mention trading IPK. No way, I say. Not unless you get a top-flight player that could help the team beyond this year. (i.e. Holliday.)

We need Hughes and IPK to succeed, and in a big way. It’s the only sure way we can stay at the same level as the Red Sox. If you trade IPK, then you better go get C.C.

  50. miller

“I hope Kennedy picks up that trade stock, Salty and Bradley would put a smile to my face.”

IPK isn’t going anywhere. Guess you will frown.

  51. Bronx Jeers

KC 4 TB 0 The clock is nearing midnight for the Rays. Looking forward to the good old days when it was just the Sox ad the Halo’s to worry about. Yank’s have a pretty tough 2nd half schedule though. Also Yank’s haven’t lost a 2nd half series at Fenway since 2004.

  52. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Colin Curtis was playing CF tonight, they might be showcasing him.

  53. Someone Else

Kennedy’s got 50 strikes in 77 pitches; I like that.

  54. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

To get Yadier the Yankees would basically have to send St. Louis our entire bullpen minus Hawkins.

    So that probably won’t work.

But I still want him on the Yankees.

San Francisco needs to get younger. It would probably take a solid package of prospects.

But I have this thing for catching Molinas…

You can never have too many Molinas!

  55. Buddy Biancalana

There are more than 3 Marx brothers.

  56. miller

“Colin Curtis was playing CF tonight, they might be showcasing him.”

    Wasn’t that an afternoon tilt?

  57. RhapsodyInBlue

Could be more than three Molina brothers.

Harpo, Zeppo and Groucho Marx will be in pinstripes before Yadier, Jose and Benji Molina if you want to get technical.

  58. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

IPK isn’t going anywhere. Guess you will frown.

Texas Rangers love him..if anything his time is dwindling here..not every prospect is going to be a stud. If Kennedy is the key to landing a Saltalamacchia and Milton Bradley..I like my Salt shaken not stirred w/ a pinch of punch. :D

  59. Buddy Biancalana

    What about Gummo & Zeppo?

  60. RhapsodyInBlue

And the Maguire sisters will be in pinstripes before the Molina Bros.

    I think there were four.

  61. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Rebecca rumors are Bengie would be waived or gotten for cheap..no team is sending a haul of prospects for him. You’d have to be crazy.

  62. miller

With no deal for a starter and Razzle Dazzle and Fat Sid around get used to IPK.

  63. Buddy Biancalana

Ahh, you mentioned Zeppo. My Bad.

  64. Fredo Corleone

“If you trade IPK, then you better go get C.C.”

Why does moving a 4/5 starter compel you to overpay Sabathia?

  65. miller

The SWB errors are what has driven up IPK pitch total more than anything.

  66. NongEyeJon

    3 errors by SWB…a little home-cooking maybe?

  67. Hornblower

    Let’s get creative.

Now is the time to see what Farnsworth is worth on the market. He is a free agent and may bring a young outfielder. He will never be worth more than he is now. Remember everyone wanted to DFA him last month.

  68. DFox

I fail to see the attraction with Saltalamacchia. If they are going to trade for a catcher, at least trade for one that’s an offensive upgrade especially if you’re going to give up someone like Ian Kennedy.

  69. Buzz

there goes the no-no and might be the game too

  70. Buddy Biancalana

    There was Chico too!

  71. NongEyeJon

    Doesn’t matter now. No-no gone.

  72. miller

    “Let’s get creative.

Now is the time to see what Farnsworth is worth on the market. He is a free agent and may bring a young outfielder. He will never be worth more than he is now. Remember everyone wanted to DFA him last month.”

Don’t give up your day job, you wouldn’t make a good GM:) Way to think about taking a strength and making it a weekness.

  73. RhapsodyInBlue

    You forgot Karl.

  74. Wolf In Pinstripes

It was made very clear that Kennedy was going to have to earn his way back to the MLB roster. To expand on billy’s comment above, it’s going to take more than 4 or 5 games for him to get to that point. The club is going to need to see a good sample size marked by consistency before they decide to give him another shot in NY. Remember, he was rushed up to begin with. There’s no need to screw up his development (and value) by doing that again.

  75. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

    Hornblower:

I think you can get more from the draft pick when he leaves.Hopefully as a Class A Free agent.

  76. billy

” There’s no need to screw up his development (and value) by doing that again.”

Agree 100%. I think that is a major reason that Cash is so interested to see Aceves in person. CJ’s blog said Cash had only seen You Tube videos put up by Aceves himself. He’s a few starts away from being ready.

  77. GreenBeret7

A two out error by Basiac opened the door for a single and two base error by Porter scored the run. Scranton has made 4 errors, tonight.

  78. rconn23

Why does moving a 4/5 starter compel you to overpay Sabathia?

You shouldn’t overpay for anyone, but if you start trading away young pitching, you give yourself less margin for error. If Hughes and IPK don’t come through, there is NO ONE that’s close to being major league ready in the system.
Can’t expect Mussina to weave more magic at age 40, if he’s resigned. Andy may or may not be back. Pitchers like Sabbathia don’t grow on trees. He’s a No.1, and he’s a horse. Those who arrogantly say the Yankees don’t need him are simply talking nonsense.

  79. 27 this year

    Hornblower:

I think you can get more from the draft pick when he leaves.Hopefully as a Class A Free agent.”

I doubt he would be a Type A because Type is decided by the last two years so he would probably squeeze in as a Type B. Still, that is a pick that could get you someone like Joba or Buccholz

  80. Fredo Corleone

    Dfox:

You write as though Kennedy is something special. He is not. He’s a 4 type starter at best. Saltalamacchia is NOT available, but has upside in excess of Kennedy. Granted he is struggling now, but he’s 23 (younger than IPK), can catch, and has only about 400 MLB at bats by which he has been judged so far. So the notion is not outrageous.

  81. GreenBeret7

actually, it was a double and an error scoring the run against Kennedy. Basiak is trying to make it up with a triple.

  82. billy

“If Hughes and IPK don’t come through, there is NO ONE that’s close to being major league ready in the system.”

A lot of scouts are high on Aceves. Obviously CAsh wanted to take a closer look. If Hughes and IPK don’t through, there’s no one close? LMFAO. Aceves is close, what about McCutchen. I guess Acves is SOMEONE.

  83. rconn23

“Texas Rangers love him..if anything his time is dwindling here..not every prospect is going to be a stud. If Kennedy is the key to landing a Saltalamacchia and Milton Bradley..I like my Salt shaken not stirred w/ a pinch of punch.”

A lot of teams surely love IPK, I’m sure. Know why? Because he’s a quality young pitcher.
Saltlamacchia is vastly overrated. There is nothing to indicate so far he’s going to be a star.

Kennedy dominated at every level of the majors and people are ready to throw him away because he pitched lousy in a handful of games. This is silly.

  84. Fredo Corleone

“Those who arrogantly say the Yankees don’t need him are simply talking nonsense.”

Agreed. Just don’t think the disposition of a pitcher like IPK should have any impact on going after Sabathia.

  85. Fredo Corleone

“Saltlamacchia is vastly overrated. There is nothing to indicate so far he’s going to be a star”

Anything to indicate Kennedy might be???

  86. billy

If IPK throws strikes, he’s not going anwyhere. His stuff is good enough to win. Obviously he’s not a top of the rotation guy but he can pitch for us.

  87. DFox

Fredo Corleone, that’s not even close to what I said. What I said was why would you trade Ian Kennedy for that specific player. Saltalamacchia has not been good, and there’s nothing to point to that he’s going to get better. Even if you want to trade Kennedy, that’s perfectly fine, but you should be able to do better than Saltalamacchia. That’s wasting someone who can bring in a lot in Ian Kennedy.

  88. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Fredo Corleone, Evan Grant the Texas beatwriter spoke w/ Rangers personel before he stated the Rangers would move Saltalamacchia before the deadline, he’s 23 and Max Ramirez/Taylor Teagarden are still there, Salty’s value at 23 is diminishing, they don’t want to send him down to AAA they will likely move him in a deal.

  89. 27 this year

    Fredo,

“You write as though Kennedy is something special. He is not. He’s a 4 type starter at best. Saltalamacchia is NOT available, but has upside in excess of Kennedy. Granted he is struggling now, but he’s 23 (younger than IPK), can catch, and has only about 400 MLB at bats by which he has been judged so far. So the notion is not outrageous.”

Yeah, and like 50 major league innings make or break a young starter.

  90. billy

IPK is really stretching it out. Back out in the 8th.

  91. DFox

“Anything to indicate Kennedy might be???”

You don’t get it. Kennedy has WORTH. Meaning teams want him, for whatever reason. Minnesota was willing to give up Santana for Kennedy and Hughes. They needed Kennedy to be included in the deal. He’s clearly someone that teams want. Colorado also wanted him. Trading him for someone who isn’t good, like Saltlamacchia, is WASTING his value.

  92. Blargh

Besides the whole Salty isn’t available in the first place thing, what’s the point in trading for a young catcher now when you already have two vets in Posada and Molina signed through next year (and Posada for two more years after that)?

  93. Fredo Corleone

    Dfox:

Kennedy does not bring you a lot. He’s not a centerpiece type player in a trade.

  94. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Saltalamacchia is a switch hitting catcher w/ pop and patience at the plate, if the Yankees get him and Milton Bradley it could be a fun year. (OH YES)

  95. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Besides the whole Salty isn’t available in the first place thing, what’s the point in trading for a young catcher now when you already have two vets in Posada and Molina signed through next year (and Posada for two more years after that)?

No one has said he is unavailable. No one.

  96. Yankee Trader

If your planning for Saltalamacchia to be your future catcher, he could very well end up at first next year, where he played about half his games for the Braves and Rangers last year.

Brandon- Why do you want Bradley, as a DH or future RF to replace Abreu? Our team is filled with DH’s.

  97. billy

Check that Strickland’s in. Not a bad night no IPk? 10-3 GO/FO. 61 strikes/92 pitches.

  98. Fredo Corleone

“Minnesota was willing to give up Santana for Kennedy and Hughes.”

Hughes was the key. He was the centerpiece. Doesn’t happen witohut Hughes. Could have happened witohut Kennedy. That’s what Kennedy is. The secondary piece in a trade that can bring an very good major leaguer. Alone, he brings you a Funtes type….maybe.

  99. Blargh

Kennedy was to pair with Wang to replace Hughes for Minnesota

  100. DFox

“Saltalamacchia is a switch hitting catcher w/ pop and patience at the plate, if the Yankees get him and Milton Bradley it could be a fun year. (OH YES)”

Yeah, just what they need, another .220 hitter with “pop” in their bat. First of all, if you call 3 homeruns “pop”, then more power to you, but we have more than enough .220 hitters like Betimit and Sexson who can hit homeruns. And Milton Bradley would be a ton of fun when he assaults someone and gets arrested. That’s just what the Yankees need.

  101. TL

The best thing Salty would bring is his former teacher/Cougar wife. We need somone than can catch and not play first. Talk about out of position on this team. He would be relegated to the bench quite a bit. Let’s get someone that can contribute.

  102. Fredo Corleone

“No one has said he is unavailable. No one.”

Rangers are selling Baird. They may not have said salty is unavailable, but they aren’t selling him low, as you’ve suggested.

  103. Rodney

Brandon gets a name in his head and is beyoung logic and reason. Pretty laughable. Might as well add Josh Hamilton? :)

  104. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

They are not trading Hamilton, that guy is thier franchise.

And Rodney I have no idea what you mean by that, it was reported in Evan Grant’s column than Foxsports put it on thier site, there is a strong thinking in Texas that Salty is going to be traded. I don’t just come up w/ this stuff.

  105. billy

Forgot that the SWB game was only 7 innings.

    From CJ:

Bottom seventh: Ian Kennedy was one out away from a no-hitter when Richmond first baseman Scott Thorman ripped a two-out double here in the seventh. Kennedy should have had the milestone, but Chris Basak bobbled what should have been the final out of the game. After Barbaro Canizares reached on the error — Basak’s second of the game — Thorman followed with his hard-hit double, and right fielder Greg Porter was charged with an error after dropping the ball while making the throw to the infield. Canizares scored on that error and tied the game at 1. Brutal, just brutal way to lose the no-hitter, not to mention the lead. Kennedy was brilliant. He allowed no walks and struck out seven.

  106. Brandon (R.I.P. Pablo Martinez) (Johan HR count: *17)

Meanwhile I said it since Monday they would likely go after Miguel Olivo or Salty and if they go after Salty I’m praying they expand it to add Milton Bradley.

  107. billy

Broussard three-run bomb wins it for SWB.

  108. Bronx Jeers

Final Kc 4 TB 2 Yanks 1/2 game closer

  109. Hornblower

    Miller and friends.

Farnsworth has to be offered arbitration and turn it down to get draft picks. Gordon said no and the Yanks got the pick that was Joba.
Time to be bold. Farnsworth has been great lately. Now is the chance to sell high.

  110. dp

    There is a fourth Molina;

    http://www.baseball-reference......gu01.shtml

He’s a catcher too but apparently unrelated to the other 3.
