Cashman quiet, others not so much

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 25, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Brian Cashman would not talk about the trade. Because the players involved need to have physicals, it’s not official. He pretended like he had no idea what we were talking about.

But all of the players involved have been told that they’ve been traded. The Pirates also admitted to it.

“They were two special guys in our clubhouse and two special guys on the field, and obviously they will be dearly missed,” Pirates manager John Russell said. “We felt that this was the best move for the Pittsburgh Pirates as well as being a very good move for X and Damaso.”

Jason Giambi: “It’s a great move. Nady is one of the best right-handed hitters in the game and he’s a tough out. … Marte is an uncomfortable at-bat for a lefty. Those guys are really going to help us.”

No word on when the new guys will arrive.

Oh, and this officially kills whatever 0.1 percent chance there was of signing Barry Bonds. Whew.

6 guys have to pass physicals and fly to their new teams game, unlikely they are there for tomorrow.

  3. Jeff NJ July 25th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

    lol, good catch Justin.

  4. Mark (Brett has arrived) July 25th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Great night to be a Yanks fan.

  5. Mark July 25th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

    Wow…what a freaking trade…brilliant

  6. gayle July 25th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

If ALL this trade does is stop that talk then it is worth it in my book. Nady is on my blog fantasy team so happy to add another Yankee to the team(already have jobs,Damon, big g and abreu

  7. Steve July 25th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

    Who gets sent down?

  8. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Pete, unless you have been adopted by Big Stein, I would not be 100% sure of anything….although I agree that there is no need for Bonds…..Have a great night, y’all !

  9. Confucius July 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Oh, and by the way, we’re now one back on the Sox in the loss column.

Where is that guy Joe who was posting to the game thread earlier? No sign of him now …

  10. Vader July 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

    Pete,

If you could, please ask Sexson what he thought of his first Yankees/Sawx game in Fenway?

  11. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

oh…and the Rays about to fold late at KC….SWEET !

  12. EY July 25th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Peter, 000000000000.1 is the same as 0.1, which is small already, but perhaps you might want to use 0.00000000000001 instead.

  13. Vader July 25th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

JC and Hawkins may be getting traded.

If he is throwing 95-96, he has to be able to get something for him.

  14. John July 25th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

terrific trade, just terrific…………Nady is that gritty, gutty type of player I know we are all gonna love and Marte is tough on lefties and can get righties out as well. This also allows the Yanks and Posada to do the right thing and get that surgery done and over with RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!! The Yanks need a catcher, not another DH next year.

  15. Bob(The Original) July 25th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Anyone think this deal is the primer for dealing away Melky?

  16. gayle July 25th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

another good thing I believe no 40 man roster moves are necessary as both Ross and tabata were on there. I would say Christian or Brett go down and 1pitcher not sure which one hope not robertson as I think they need a long man unless they get another starter and move ras to the pen so I think giese is safe. Hawkins should be dfa not sure he will though

  17. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

    now melky isn’t going anywhere.

  18. RalphieD July 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

what is nady getting paid next year?

  19. PBL July 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

I think this deal will impact Giambi and Abreu’s impending free agency moreso than melky’s future with the team

  20. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

Ralphie, it doesn’t matter.. they’re the Yankees , why does everyone act like they’re the Rays, they got money

  21. Syracuse Gary July 25th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

What does Nady’s .330 NL batting average equate to in AL? .300 ???

  22. YanksFanLV July 25th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Great trade, the only real thing we gave up was Tabata, and who knows what his deal will be in a few years. We got proven stuff for pretty much nothin, how can you go wrong!?

  23. RalphieD July 25th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

i didnt mean it like that…i just wanted to know….

  24. Syracuse Gary July 25th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

His .900 OPS replaces Gardner’s .400 OPS. YOWZA!!! (yes i just said Yowza)

  25. Rick July 25th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

This is an absolute steal. We solve our right-handed bat and lefty reliever needs by giving very little. I like Ohlendorf, but he’s a very replaceable reliever who couldn’t even stay on the big team. Tabata’s stock has dropped big time.

I can’t believe we got these two guys without of our big prospect pitchers.

Now, Cashman probably just waits for a starting pitcher via salary dump. If it doesn’t happen, no big deal. Either way, we don’t give up any serious prospects this year.

  26. Pepitone July 25th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

I just looked up the stats of both Nady and Xavier and almost filled my pants. Wow! Is this an upgrade or what!
Can’t wait to see these guys in Yankee uniforms. Pete, do you know when is the latest they can get here?

  27. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!) July 25th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

“What does Nady’s .330 NL batting average equate to in AL? .300 ???”

I don’t think the pitching is better in the AL, it is just that the offense sucks in the NL

  28. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Nady and Xavier are the same people, lol its Xavie Nady.lol
    little excited are we?lol

  29. optiimistic pete July 25th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

    NOOOOOOO, noooooo barry!!

  30. crawdaddie July 25th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

As someone stated, this is a great night to be a Yankees fan.

  31. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    1.Damon DH
    2.Jeter SS
    3.Abreu RF
    4.Rodriguez 3B
    5.Giambi 1B
    6.Nady LF
    7.Cano 2B
    8.Molina C
    9.Cabrera CF

    I like it,lol

  32. Jay July 25th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Hawkins has to go… Nady wears #22 :-)

  33. Drive 4-5 July 25th, 2008 at 11:28 pm

The Yankees must NEVER get rid of Richie Sexson. Between his 6 games against the Yanks with the Mariners and his 7 games as a Yankee he has never seen the Yanks lose a game this year! He’s like a 6 foot 8 good luck charm lol

  34. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

    i agree

    KEEP BIG SEXY!

  35. YankeesLuv July 25th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Oh, and this officially kills whatever 0.1 percent chance there was of signing Barry Bonds.

    Thank goodness! :)

  36. Tom July 25th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

I think the Yankees over payed with Tabata. Tabata has not been the same since he was hit in 2006. The Yankee medical staff had Tabata play in sever pain for one year. Finally he had surgery in August 2007. Even today people see Tabata swing and miss he will wince in pain and grab his hand, I am being told that this operation take 12 to 15 months to heal. I think the other players were eneough for a 33 year old set up and a 29 year old outfielder who has hit 20 homeruns only once in his 8 year major league career.

Tabata when healthy is consider the cream of the minor leagues. You don’t trade a player like Tabata for a set up man and a part time ourfielder. You trade him in a package for a front line starter or and every day player. I hope he doesnot turn out to be another Wille Mcgee.

The Yankees might rue the day the trade Tabata.

  37. ryanloghry July 25th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Awesome trade, I agree. But what I wanna know is, does this nix the Washburn trade?

  38. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 25th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

You can’t know for sure how Tabata will turn out. If Nady can hit, who cares if its HR’s? Yes, they are nice to see, but hits are hits. If nothing else they extend the innings.

They showed Nady and Marte in the dugout once they got the news. They looked pretty happy.

This looks like a good enough deal for the Yankees. Yes its tough giving up on Tabata, but he is years away from coming up to the bigs. A lot can happen in that time. Good and bad.

  39. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 25th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Tom, there is no guarantee that Tabata will ever hit the way he was projected to. Do you think the Yankees don’t have medical staff that know how long it takes things to heal?

  40. Aaron July 25th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

theres always that one person who complains.. sry Tom this is the Yankees, they do whats best for now, and not wait 4 years for tabata.. don’t be a yankee fan then, its a great trade.. marte can also close out games 2..

  41. Pepitone July 25th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

“Nady and Xavier are the same people, lol its Xavie Nady.lol
    little excited are we?lol”

Nady, Xavier, and Marte wow what a trade! : D

  42. Starks July 25th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Yo only trade Tabata for a starter or an every day player? Well what do yo call NADY a bench player then? Moron. This was not a steal trade as everyone likes to think but we clearly got the better end of this deal.

  43. Aaron(one more starter and #27!) July 25th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

what are the chances Yanks get in a fight tomorrow??lol

  44. Kill-Schill(ing) July 26th, 2008 at 12:00 am

Hey, I really wanted the Yankees to acquire the Pirates’ other corner outfielder, Bay, and quite frankly, with the Yankees current bullpen proving as effective as it has demonstrated recently and with Bruney returning, I wasn’t as obsessed with acquiring a lefty-reliever as Girardi and Cashman were.

That being said, however, I have no cause to complain about this deal.

The Yankees obtained two players with the potential to have an immediate impact and they didn’t sacrifice a great deal to do so. I liked Ohlendorf and had hope for Tabata but with Veras’ emergence, Ollie became expendable and Little Manny is years away from fulfilling his potential, if ever. Don’t count him out though. It can take some player a year or more to recover fully from hamate surgery.

My only qualm with this acquistion is how it affects the Yankees’ off-season. I sincerely hope Cashman and Co. haven’t concluded that Nady is a viable replacement for Abreu. He isn’t. If Abreu agrees to a one or two-year contract at Matsui and Damon’s cost, the Yankees would be far better served re-signing him and finding another place for Nady, whether at 1st base or in LF or at DH or as a 4th outfielder, and divesting themselves of Matsui, who has become a one-dimensional milstone.

Nady’s having an exceptional year, granted, but his average career production is no match for Abreu’s.

  45. John in Ohio July 26th, 2008 at 12:03 am

Nady is hiting .330. He has played nearly 400 games in RF, and a total of 99 in CF and LF. He is making a little over $2 million.

If he continues with this offensive production, it doesn’t bode well for Mr. Abreu’s chances of wearing pinstripes past this year.

Does anyone know anything about his defense? Is he wall-shy, like Abreu??

  46. rconn23 July 26th, 2008 at 12:09 am

“My only qualm with this acquistion is how it affects the Yankees’ off-season. I sincerely hope Cashman and Co. haven’t concluded that Nady is a viable replacement for Abreu. He isn’t.”

Actually, Nady is better. Abreu is in a steep decline. He’s been bad in RF this year and his .OBP and slugging have been way, way down.

  47. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano] July 26th, 2008 at 12:16 am

As long as we keep Austin Jackson it’s all good.

  48. Yankee Trader July 26th, 2008 at 12:24 am

Nady makes 3M, arbitration eligible next year, 10 assists, 5 double plays, 2 errors in RF.

Nady’s situational stats terrific. Bay having trouble hitting lefties!!

  49. Jimbo July 26th, 2008 at 12:46 am

It must get old being lied to constantly by the Yankees. Cashman comes across poorly acting like he doesn’t know what you’re talking about while Pittsburg is open and honest about the trade. Can’t he just say “we’ve got something in the works but we’re not ready to discuss it yet”?

  50. OldYanksFan July 26th, 2008 at 1:00 am

Based on Zone Rating (ZR), Nady is an average/slightly below average LFer (.820) and an average/slightly above average RFer (.870). He has also played some 1B. Nady has had an average OPS of .820 over the last 4 years.

  51. stu July 26th, 2008 at 1:02 am

How many times have we heard people say that the Yankees need to go back to bringing in “grinders” like they did in the days of O’Neill, Tino, Brosius, etc. and not go for the superstar at every position approach that has done nothing expect leave them short of championship #27 in recent years.

Nady would certainly be considered a “grinder” before ever being called a superstar. I think it is a great deal and I am amazed that the Yankees were able to pull it off for the talent they gave up with still 5 days remaining before the trade deadline.

You have to think that when the Yankee brass met in Tampa the other day, there must have been something cooking. If that is the case, then even more kudos for the Yankees for getting this done quickly before other teams could offer counter proposals to the Pirates.

Nady AND Marte … AND a 1-0 win over Boston at Fenway … great night to be a fan of the Pinstripes!!!

  52. bardos July 26th, 2008 at 1:32 am

i notice nady has a pretty terrible bb-kk ratio throughout his career. his salary appears to be incredibly low too.

  53. Steve O July 26th, 2008 at 1:35 am

Let’s just hope Xavier Nady is better than Xavier Hernandez.(I can’t remember any other Yankee whose name started with a X)

  54. Jersey July 26th, 2008 at 1:43 am

I’m a Pirates fan, I hope you enjoy the call-ups from your Quadruple A affiliate… we all think we got robbed: http://whereisvanslyke.blogspo.....nkees.html

Oh and Nady has a good arm but is average at best at tracking down fly balls and getting in good position, good luck with him playing left field at Yankee Stadium

  55. tim boat July 26th, 2008 at 1:49 am

Nady can also play some first as well. Which will be great when Giambi is gone next year.

  56. bigjf July 26th, 2008 at 2:01 am

I’d still give Bonds a 0.1% chance. I’d rather have him at the dish than Melky…

  57. bigjf July 26th, 2008 at 2:10 am

tim boat, Nady isn’t going to make a single put out at first base next year if the Yanks manage to get Teixeira.

  58. eric in australia July 26th, 2008 at 2:28 am

I agree that this move brings back memories of the mid 90s with the grinder approach, before the superstar deals for giambi etc.
Spells the end for Bobby. Take the picks, he’ll be type A

  59. tbradigan July 26th, 2008 at 8:00 am

Wonder if catcher Ryan Doumit was discussed? He’s young and can hit. Who did we give up? I didn’t recognize the names.

  60. mommy July 26th, 2008 at 10:21 am

Can’t wait to hear John Sterling calling a Nady homerun… X marks the spot??

  61. islesfan July 26th, 2008 at 11:41 am

Joel Sherman is reporting on his blog that 2 of the prospects are Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen instead of Kontos and Coke. Personally, I think that is a better deal for the Yankees. Keep the younger pitcher.

  62. yanksrule July 27th, 2008 at 12:07 am

As much as I like the move getting Xavier Nady, it does not give the Yankees the opportunity to go after Vladimir Guerrero in the off season without trading Damon or Matsui, and the thought of Vladimir Guerrero batting before Alex Rodriguez is frightening.
