Joba Chamberlain is excited to make his first start at Fenway Park. Brian Heyman has the story.

Hopefully nothing happens beyond a good game. But it would be no surprise if Joba and Kevin Youkilis got into some sort of dust-up tonight. They have a little bit of a history.

If Youk charges the mound, Sexson should bolt out of the dugout to hold him down while Joba shaves off his ugly goatee.

  2. TKinDC July 25th, 2008 at 11:00 am

    Lol –

Sexson just needs to hold him until Farnsy gets there and piledrive Youk on that shiny dome of his.

  3. Y's Guy July 25th, 2008 at 11:01 am

    focus on winning not fighting.

  4. Stephen July 25th, 2008 at 11:01 am

Youkilis has anger issues and I’d be scared to encounter him in a dark alley…but don’t count out Joba in a cage match!

  5. Buzz July 25th, 2008 at 11:02 am

TEk always looking for a fight with arod

    yanks targeting bengie molina?

  9. Stephen July 25th, 2008 at 11:06 am

I don’t want a fight and really don’t want Joba to hit Youk and get a suspension, but I’d love it if Joba’s first pitch is on the inside corner, just to prove that he’s not intimidated.

  10. dan July 25th, 2008 at 11:09 am

I hope nothing like that goes down, just go up there and win games, its not about beating them up, beat them up on the scoreboard

Would love to get the first two so you arent sitting there Sunday night trying to get a series win from Sidney, I know hes been ok, but still….

As for trade rumors its all over the place, Melky has been rather smelky, but if he goes in a deal, and gardner goes also, who in the blue hell plays center field and no one here say Johnny Damon!!!

  11. randy l July 25th, 2008 at 11:10 am

the problem with shaving his ugly goatee is that it covers his even uglier face.

a little known fact is that scouts used to have a rating that they called “good face” that was part of a scouting report.

“useless” clearly fell through the talent cracks because he doesn’t have the “good face” or athletic body that most baseball athletes have.

what’s really annoying about him is that he tries so hard.

he’s partly good because he thinks he is. it’s joba’s job tonight and in the future to put some doubt about how good “useless” is in his own mind. they’ll be seeing each other for years to come.it’s just a matter of time before there is a nettles/bill lee or munson /fisk moment.

there’ll be a flash point some day. might as well set the tone right now. nothing dirty, just a reminder who the hammer is and who is the nail.

  12. JoeyA (Girardi instead of Moeller) July 25th, 2008 at 11:11 am

    over-under 3 head throws @ Youk.

  13. TKinDC July 25th, 2008 at 11:13 am

I we all joke about it – but last time these two teams met there were something like 6 hit batsmen and nobody got pissed off.

Both teams are professional and if everyone acts accordingly there won’t be a fight. It was pretty clear to me that Clemens had something to do with Joba throwing behind Youk’s head last year.

Of course, anything can happen with hotheads like Crisp, Pedroia, Youk, and Farnsy in the mix.

  14. TurnTwo July 25th, 2008 at 11:13 am

“As for trade rumors its all over the place, Melky has been rather smelky, but if he goes in a deal, and gardner goes also, who in the blue hell plays center field and no one here say Johnny Damon!!!”

perhaps the yankees would also acquire/bring back a CF in said deal where Melky and/or Gardner would be dealt.

  15. Rubin July 25th, 2008 at 11:14 am

I hope Joba hits that tool. I hope he hits him right in the head. I absolutely hate pukeilis.

  16. Brian July 25th, 2008 at 11:15 am

A Yankee always leaves the game with some sort of injury during a series with the Sox. It was Johnny Damon the last time.
Which Yankee will it be this time? My money is on Jeter. What’s your guess?

  17. Jeet Skeet July 25th, 2008 at 11:15 am

Aside from Youks ugly head i think what really must bother Joba is that god awful batting stance he has…which looks like he trying to take a poop! I like to call him “Poopilis”

  18. Jorge Steinbrenner July 25th, 2008 at 11:19 am

“perhaps the yankees would also acquire/bring back a CF in said deal where Melky and/or Gardner would be dealt.”

I thought the “and” in that report was strange. I can’t see them trading both either.

Being that one’s been cold since April, and the other has only shown flashes of being able to hit in the majors, albeit a rather small sample size, it’s not an easy call as to who to keep. Melky still gets the nod. He’s still younger, more of an asset defensively, and at least has shown he CAN hit MLB pitching.

But maybe Pittsburgh will take them both, almost-no-hit king Ian Kennedy, and give us back McClouth. i know. i know, but a boy can dream…. :)

  19. ANSKY July 25th, 2008 at 11:19 am

I noticed in the past when Joba’s come in to cover the plate, the Sox have slid at Joba’s feet while sliding into the plate. Trying to get a little ‘accidental injury’ in there while they’re at it I guess. If the Yanks did anything like that it would draw fines, suspensions and the ire of all the Fenway idiots. Figures.

If Joba had meant to hit Youkilis in the noggin last year, Youkilis would still be in a coma today. It should be a non-issue. Youkilis was just scared back then.

  20. Jorge Steinbrenner July 25th, 2008 at 11:20 am

For what it’s worth, I hope the only thing getting hit are baseballs over the Green Monster by Yankee hitters.

    No other distractions, please.

  21. TurnTwo July 25th, 2008 at 11:23 am

“But maybe Pittsburgh will take them both, almost-no-hit king Ian Kennedy, and give us back McClouth. i know. i know, but a boy can dream…”

hey, its friday… you’re allowed to have a little fun.

i actually thought, since Ed Price mentioned that the M’s are said to now be interested in maybe one of the two, you could tell them you’ll take Ichiro’s salary along with Washburn’s, and maybe throw them IPK, Melky, maybe Ohlendorf and another prospect or two.

unlikely, sure. but you never know… same kind of deal we got Abreu and Lidle for a couple summers ago, only you are actually giving up a couple of real players.

  22. Jorge Steinbrenner July 25th, 2008 at 11:25 am

“i actually thought, since Ed Price mentioned that the M’s are said to now be interested in maybe one of the two, you could tell them you’ll take Ichiro’s salary along with Washburn’s, and maybe throw them IPK, Melky, maybe Ohlendorf and another prospect or two.”

trust me…..i was watching Ichiro play the RF wall at the stadium perfectly and salivating too but, really, when does the bottom fall out on him?

you’ve seen folks come down on Jeter on his potential decline at about the same age. why is it going to be any different with Ichiro?

i love Ichiro. i would have loved him more five years ago. i think you resist the strong temptation now.

  23. Zach in Port Jeff (temporarily Zach in Melbourne, AUS) July 25th, 2008 at 11:27 am

Something will happen tonight. Youk will be in the friendly confines of his ballpark, so he’ll feel extra comfortable flapping his mouth when Joba has the audacity to pitch him inside.

I say keep beaning him until he learns to take first base with his mouth shut.

He is still owed a fastball between the numbers for whining to the umpire between innings during the last series.

  24. ANSKY July 25th, 2008 at 11:29 am

    TKinDC

Yeah last time it looked like pitching was a little wild but there were no intentions. It happens sometimes and it appeared (at least on TV) that both teams took it all that way.

I find it hard to believe Varitek & Youlickus taking any lump in Fenway then taking their base w/o even looking at the pitcher, as Jeter & A-Rod have done so many times in the past.

I’m predicting Jeter and A-Rod will have 3 HBP’s between them in the 3-game series.

Joba needs to establish that he’s going to paint the inside corner sometimes. They’ll just have to live with it.

If things get out of hand, Farnsworth can re-establish control just by coming into the game. I don’t think even Coco Crisp (he used to box) would challenge Farnsworth.

  25. Rich July 25th, 2008 at 11:32 am

relax guys – theyre baseball games, this isnt boxing or WWIII. id like if they just play with no hit batters or brawls.

  26. pete needs a shot of optimism! July 25th, 2008 at 11:35 am

    baseball games??

    THIS IS

    YANKEES VS RED SOX!!!!!

joba is probably going to disembowel youk by the third inning.

  27. SteveNYG July 25th, 2008 at 11:39 am

I’m excited for Joba’s first start at Fenway too! I’m interested to see how he responds to the pressure. Going against the Yankees storied rival, in their home, with a chance to pick up a game in the WC standings is a big test for the youngster.

I think he comes out of it OK. Don’t think he goes deep though. His propensity to go deep in counts combined with the patience of Boston’s batters may mean a 5-6 inning departure. Still, I think he gives us a chance to win against beckett who’s no slouch on the mound either.

  28. SteveNYG July 25th, 2008 at 11:48 am

As for the whole fighting thing. I realize baseball can be an emotional sport, but I have to take a pass on beanball wars. The Yankees can’t afford to take a chance of a retaliation pitch injuring someone in their already depleted line up. That said, I’m not opposed to some good old fashion up and in heat. Just keep it clean and play good ball is all I ask. I want the Yanks to take 2 of 3 this weekend. Thats the real message that needs to be sent.

  29. Eric July 25th, 2008 at 11:57 am

Not to mention they can’t risk a suspension to Joba, and you know the MLB would do just that if he incites a beanball war.

  30. Y's Guy July 25th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

im with steve, i hope both teams play clean hardball, no fights and nobody gets hurt.

    and the yankees sweep.

  31. Rockin' Rich July 25th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

    Peace!

  32. Buck Foston July 25th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

“Of course, anything can happen with hotheads like Crisp, Pedroia, Youk, and Farnsy in the mix.”

    I think that’d be a fair fight…..Crisp, Pedroia, & Puke vs. Farnsworth.

  33. Yankee Jay July 25th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

No fights PLEASE!!!!! The last thing we need is Joba breaking his hand on Youk’s shiny dome.

  34. Timothy Clougher July 25th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

I say forget Washed up, sign Bonds, use the kids.

  35. Timothy Clougher July 25th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

    If I were Cashman:

I would sign Bonds, let him play at AAA, 2 games if he’s his old self bring him up. I wouldn’t trade anyone.

Go after FA in the off season.

Teams want to much for there so-so players we don’t need them. Sign Bonds and see what happens.

  36. frank July 25th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

This time Joba will be spot on ,and hit that big meatloaf head.Ha ha

  37. frankiedue July 25th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

honestly, i hope joba hits him right in the face

  38. AC July 25th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

I actually think it will br Ortiz who starts the trouble. He bitches everytime a pitch even comes on the inside part of home plate during his at bats. I say pitch him VERY inside.

  39. blee July 25th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Too much talk bout respecting the opponent has gone on between the two.. I know the players dont hate the other team like the fans do.. BUT they need to..
Girardi should tell his team to HATE the red sox.. want to beat them, pound them, embarrass them..
Cant hurt giving the yankees a little more passion

  40. Chris July 25th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Can Youkilis get hit without glaring at the pitcher and mumbling on the way to first? For a guy that virtually stands on home plate when he bats, he sure whines a lot when he gets nailed with borderline strikes. You don’t see Jeter and Giambi get all out of sorts when they get hit.

Oddly enough, the pitch Wang threw last year that actually knocked him out of a few games was probably the only accidental one of the lot.

You have to pitch him inside to get him out, so he’s going to get hit. I hope that philosophy doesn’t change, no matter how many times he takes it in the ribs.

  41. Chris in Philly July 25th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Amazing that now it’s Yankee fans cursing the best players on Boston… how the tide has turned in this rivalry.

Can somebody remind me why Joba has thrown behind Youkilis multiple times? We can all agree Youk is a cry baby but what started all this nonsense? By the way, Youk hitting better than .400 against Joba…

  42. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 25th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

If there is no warning before the game, then Joba needs to drill Youk the first chance he gets….THEN, when Jerk Beck@$$ can’t resist returning the favor, HE gets thrown out and suspended….SWEET !…

  43. FrankDiscussion July 25th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Beckett gets thrown out ? I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Remember, Yankee pitchers have been thrown out for NOT hitting opposing batters.
