Game 103: Yankees at Red Sox

July
26

YANKEES (57-45)
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Nady LF
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Pettitte LHP

RED SOX (60-44)
Pedroia 2B
Youkilis 1B
Ortiz DH
Ramirez LF
Lowell 3B
Drew RF
Lowrie SS
Crisp CF
Cash C
Wakefield RHP

Andy Pettitte (11-7, 3.86) vs. the Boston hitters.

Tim Wakefield (6-7, 3.69) vs. the New York hitters.

Just for kicks, here is Damaso Marte vs. the Boston hitters.

Notes: Sorry for the delay, they were waiting on Nady to arrive. … Nady is 0 for 1 in his career against Wakefield. …The Yankees have won seven straight and 12 of 15. … The Yankees have allowed only 13 earned runs in 66 innings since the break while striking out 73. Their team ERA is down to a season low 3.94. … Bobby Abreu has a 10 game hitting streak at Fenway Park (14 of 41, six doubles). … The Yankees are 22 of 71 (.310) with RISP since the break.

Back later with updates.

UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Brett Gardner was optioned to Scranton. LaTroy Hawkins was DFA’d. Also, Kei Igawa had cleared waivers and was taken off the 40-man. So they’re at 39 now. Plenty of room for Jarrod Washburn.

UPDATE, 2:55 p.m.: Here’s how the deal went down. Cashman has been trying to get Marte for a while. When the Pirates mentioned how much they liked Tabata, the deal expanded. Pittsburgh had to have Tabata and Ohlendorf.

Then the second tier of the deal became McCutchen or Coke. The Pirates had their choice. The third segment of the deal was a choice of Karstens or Kontos.

* * * BREAKING NEWS: Yankees close on Washburn * * *

Waiting to find out details, but it sounds like the Yankees may have traded for Jarrod Washburn. Or are at least close to that. More to come.

UPDATE, 3:12 p.m.: Hmm, maybe not. Says Brian Cashman, “I have no irons in the fire. I’m cold.”

Of course that could change in a second.

UPDATE, 4:09 p.m.: Here is Brian Cashman taking about the Pirates trade:

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: A few points about the trade:

* Cashman said he would not have surrended what he did for two rentals. Having Nady and Marte under their control was important.

* This will enable the Jorge Posada to have his shoulder surgery now and be ready for 2009. Cashman and Girardi said that will be discussed. But now that Nady is here and Damon is nearly healthy, there is no sense in delaying Posada’s surgery.

* Cashman said that Austin Jackson had passed Tabata in terms of being the best position player prospect in the organization.

* Dealing the prospects opens up space in terms of who they can protect in the Rule 5 Draft.

UPDATE, 4:31 p.m.: Brutal outing for Andy Pettitte so far. He is closing in on 50 pitches in the second inning and is down 2-0 thanks to an error by Alex Rodriguez.

With Sidney Ponson going against Jon Lester tomorrow, this is a game the Yankees need to get.

UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Marte has No. 34 and Nady No. 29.

UPDATE, 4:46 p.m.: I know I keep bringing this up. But what is up with Bobby Meacham? The Red Sox were giving that run up when Manny threw to second and he held Abreu. It should be 2-2.

UPDATE, 5:00 p.m.: Robbie Cano is now an insane 17 of 33 since the break. He hit that ball a long way.

UPDATE, 5:30 p.m.: At what point do you suppose the Yankees will figure out that Cano can’t steal bases? He is 1 for 5 this season and 11 of 25 for his career. Here’s a crazy thought: Stop having him run.

TRADE UPDATE, 5:41 p.m.: Jarrod Washburn might not be a Yankee today, but it could happen as early as tomorrow. The Yankees appear willing to absorb the $14 million he has left on his deal in return for not sending Seattle any player of significance. No, not Kei Igawa

Washburn will either waive his no-trade right or get compensated by Seattle in some way.

It’s a lot of money, but Washburn would be an upgrade on Ponson or Rasner. Having him around also would cushion the blow if Andy Pettitte and/or Mike Mussina retires after this season or go elsewhere.

UPDATE, 5:57 p.m.: There seems to be no stopping the Yankees. four hits and four runs in this inning (so far) and it’s 7-2. Meanwhile Brian Cashman is burning up his cell phone.

You have to like a weekend of roster improvements and getting tied with the Red Sox in the loss column. With all the road games the Yankees have left, any win on the road is huge.

The Hub is going to be Panic City if this lead holds up.

UPDATE, 6:00 p.m.: More brilliant base-running by the Yankees. But it should not matter.

It would be big if the Yankees can avoid using Mariano Rivera.

UPDATE, 6:06 p.m.: Assistant trainer Steve Donohue just visited Pettitte on the mound. He just threw an 87-mph fastball, so apparently he is OK.

UPDATE, 6:09 p.m.: All things considered, a solid six innings out of Andy Pettitte. He’s over 100, so that may have been it for him. Veras is warming up.

UPDATE, 6:26 p.m.: Right into the fire goes Damaso Marte, two on, one out and Big Papi up.

UPDATE, 6:29 p.m.: And he strikes out Ortiz on four pitches. Brian Cashman is a genius.

UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: Look at Girardi, getting all Tony LaRussa on us. Three relievers in one inning.

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: It would not stun me if Hansen drills somebody in this inning.

UPDATE, 6:47 p.m.: That was pretty obvious in its intent. But the Yankees had something coming their way after Joba threw at Youkilis last night. Now it’s over unless the Yankees decide to continue it.

I’ll say this for Hansen, at least he threw at A-Rod’s body and not his head.

UPDATE, 7:01 p.m.: I’ve never understood the Sweet Caroline thing. It’s a creepy song. Neil Diamond admitted he wrote about it about Caroline Kennedy when she was 13. So, hey, let’s everybody sing!

  1. Bronx Jeers

    Nady era begins!

  2. Phil

What else did we send to Seattle besides Igawa?

  3. Tint

Nady should be good for 2 HR’s and a web gem today.

    Lets go Yankeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!

  4. mko

What else did we send to Seattle besides Igawa?

The trade has not been finalized, it’s not even a sure thing yet.

  5. Jorge Tabata

I don’t think anything Phil… atleast I would hope not.

Even Coke and Kontos are too much for Washburn.

If they insist on another player, they can have Jason Lane or someone.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Pete, come on now, you know you want to tell us that Hawkins was DFA’d (good guy not withstanding)….

  7. Tank

    why is nyyfans.com down?

  8. Phil

I think they are at 38 on the 40 since 4 spots have opened and only Marte and Nady have arrived.

  9. mko

    why is nyyfans.com down?

    It’s not.

  10. JR Yankees

Wow, Nady already in th lineup. What number will he be wearing tonight?

Marte will probably take the vacant #21 in honor of Clemente.

Good luck to both of these guys as they are thrown into a snake pit in their first game as Yankees.

More importantly, let the good times roll on…Go Yankees!

  11. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Ok, Nady is in the lineup. I feel bad for Brett. But Hawkins had to go. Maybe its Hawkins for Washburn, if Hawkins clears.

  12. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

No way Kei passed through waivers!! How the heck did that happen? He is a lefty!

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Phil: I don’t think McCutcheon was on the 40 man?

  14. Anthony

    LETS GO YANKEEEEEEEEEES

  15. mel

What’s the difference between ML & MiL for Igawa in regards to a Mariners trade?

What’s the latest? It sounds like a salary dump now and the Yankees are dealing from the position of strength.

Do you insist they take Igawa and forego any Washburn salary contribution from Seattle? If you’re Seattle and have to pay part of Washburn’s salary, do you take back Igawa instead?

  16. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I think they wanted Brett to play more, and get his hitting back on track.

  17. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

I think we’re stuck with Igawalbatross – They wouldn’t have bothered putting him through waivers if he was going to Seattle.

Or I could be completely wrong :)

  18. Fredo Corleone

Igawa won’t be in the Washburn deal. They won’t take him.

  19. ZaWheelZ

Just heard Buster Olney on the Gordon Damer show report the yanks will be acquiring Washburn Monday or Tuesday. Don’t want to interfere with the HOF induction tomorrow.

  20. mel

    JR,

You’re freaking kidding about #21, right?

  21. NYMetsGrrl94

Nady will most likely be able to wear #22. He has worn it his entire career except for a few days at the beginning of his Pirates tenure. And with Hawkins gone it is open.

Be good to Xavier. He is one of my favorites.

  22. Phil

Rebecca, Ohlendorf and Karstens were on the 40.

  23. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Okay we cleared Hawk and Jeff off the 40 man cause of the trade. and than Kei because NO team wanted him. I still can’t believe it!! ;)

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Marte can take 21 all he wants. It’s on the fans if they boo him.

  25. Fredo Corleone

“I think they wanted Brett to play more, and get his hitting back on track.”

That and he’s not good enough to hit at the MLB level.

  26. Dman

now that hawkins got dfa’d is nady’s still have #22

  27. mko

HIS NAME IS DAN MCCUTCHEN and not McCutcheon. Enough already…

  28. mel

It’s a good thing Gardner’s going back so he can play full time.

At least he got a taste of what it’s like and had some success (perfect on the base pads while knocking in some guys.) Beat Papelbon, too!

If he wants to get back up, he’ll work all the harder on his hitting.

    Thanks for filling in, Brett.

  29. Bronx Jeers

According to those #’s, the Sox shouldn’t be so scared of Marte. Papi took him deep…. so did Coco.

    Damaso Myers?

  30. Global Warming

Cano actually bats in front a quality bat! It’s about time.

We will see Gardner again in September and October.

  31. Someone Else

“UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Brett Gardner was optioned to Scranton. LaTroy Hawkins was DFA’d. Also, Kei Igawa had cleared waivers and was taken off the 40-man. So they’re at 39 now. Plenty of room for Jarrod Washburn.”

Excellent news. Gardner needs AAA at bats; Christian satisfies the pinch runner/spot starter role. Gardner will be back up before September 1st to be a postseason pinch runner/defensive replacement (Nady to RF, Gardner to LF).

No one was willing to take Igawa for his salary. Too bad.

I don’t care about Washburn, to tell the truth. I don’t want him in 2009, period.

  32. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

“HIS NAME IS DAN MCCUTCHEN and not McCutcheon. Enough already…”

    good point miko ;)

  33. Someone Else

And I much prefer keeping Giese as the long man. I wish Hawkins luck elsewhere, but he lost his job.

  34. will

Marte i read has very shaky makeup one of the reasons the yankees traded him to begin with. I dunno if he’s matured overall or can handle the big show of NYC now.. We’ll find out soon.

  35. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Someone else, maybe you havent heard of the trade made 1 year and a half ago, whe we got Abreu.

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Sorry, I failed spelling.

    No, seriously, I totally did.

And I wouldn’t worry too much about the Sox numbers against Marte–they’ve also hit Rivera pretty well, too.

  37. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    Pete -

What’s up with TBA for tomorrow’s game?????

  38. mel

LOL@ Francona. “Some misunderstandings this week and doesn’t want to get into the details.”

A normal person would clear up the misunderstanding before crawling into an MRI tube.

  39. Someone Else

“Someone else, maybe you havent heard of the trade made 1 year and a half ago, whe we got Abreu.”

    Huh?

  40. Cody

Pettitte is a “LHP”, Peter. Yes, I know it was just a mistake.

  41. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Why would you leave out Abreu, when you said Nady to RF, Gardner to LF?

  42. Dennis

Pirates took Karstens instead of Kontos wow thanks for that.

  43. Matt

Good moves Yanks. Adios Hawkins! I figured hed be gone by August 1st.

  44. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Igawa and LaTroy for Washburn? LOL

  45. Desi Yankee

The numbers of Damasu marte against Bostons Lefties are UGLY.

  46. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    From Pete:

    * * * * * * * * BREAKING NEWS: Yankees close on Washburn * * * * * * ** *

Waiting to find out details but it sounds like the Yankees may have traded for Jarrod Washburn. More to come.

  47. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Dennis yeah I’m shocked that they took Jeff.

  48. Someone Else

Anyone watching this Yankees’ Classics game? Love the Melky play.

  49. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Rubin, if that happens I’ll be Dancing in the Street.

  50. Someone Else

    Well, Washburn on his way.

Only other deal I see possibly being made is a catcher or a better starter. Neither are likely, though.

  51. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Jennifer, why would you be? They wanted more than 1 guy of immediate help for the rotation.

  52. Phil

Benji Molina could be the catcher.

  53. Someone Else

“Why would you leave out Abreu, when you said Nady to RF, Gardner to LF?”

Abreu stinks defensively. I was talking about late inning defensive replacement.

  54. PittsburghYankeeFan

Manny to the Yankees! That’s where he wants to go. Chatting it up with ARod, is he? Not at the deadline (maybe to the Mets or Phils), maybe next year? Could we deal with it?

The Mariners owners are Japanese. Igawa is going to the Mariners for Washburn, and he will start for them. It is a dishonor to be in AAA and clear waivers like he has, and Japanese players just lost a bit of face.

  55. Matt

Loving these moves, good job Cash.

  56. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

It would be great for Jose Molina if his brother came in also, IMO

  57. mko

Benji Molina could be the catcher.

Don’t think the Giants are gonna give Bengie up!

  58. SJ44

I guess Cash wants to get all the business out of the way so he can enjoy himself tomorrow in Cooperstown for Goose’s induction ceremony. lol

  59. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    rubin- um Igawa stinks.

  60. dontfirecash

I really don’t want to see Washburn on the Yanks in 2009, espcecially if he is costing $10 million. Wouldn’t Ian Kennedy be a better option than Washburn?

  61. Fran

If the trade for Washburn is complete maybe he starts tomorrow night. Does anyone know when Washburn last pitched?

  62. Dennis

    Rubin

I think we r surprised because Kontos actually has a ceiling while Karstens just plain sucks.

  63. Tank

We need to find a way to get Manny.

    Maybe a 3-team deal.

  64. SJ44

Manny will never be a Yankee. Won’t happen under any circumstances.

  65. S.A.- I still believe in this team

    Let’s go Yanks.

  66. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

I was talking about the Pirates, Ohlendorf and Jeff will help them immediately.

If Ohlendorf develops his pitches more and maybe learn another one, he’ll project better that an 5 starter, thats what the Pirates plan to do with him, it looks like.

  67. Matt

Washburn was scheduled to pitch for Mariners tomorrow. Makes sense, slot him right in there!

  68. EricVA

    Fran,

Washburn was scheduled to pitch for Seattle tomorrow.

  69. Daveo

How does Cashman figure Washburn is any better than Ponson or Rasner?

  70. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

All right guys, given all the trade deadlines since 1998, where does this one rank on your radar?

On mine it’s easily 1 or 2, barring utter disaster.

  71. Matt

And Seattle is at Toronto, not far from Boston, he could be with the Yankees in a few hours

  72. Dennis

Karstens will not help them thats my argument he is just straight awful now and in the future. why would u not take a guy that can be good in 2 years VS a guy who sucks now and forever.

  73. Patrick â„¢

“Manny will never be a Yankee. Won’t happen under any circumstances.”

Any reason you say that? I could definitely see him being a Yankee as soon as next year. If the Sox decline his option and he becomes an FA I think the Yanks would LOVE to grab him and make him the full time DH.

  74. Fredo Corleone

“We need to find a way to get Manny.”

Why would you want him? He’s a pain in the ass who will quit on you when thigs aren’t going his way.

  75. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Jarrod’s numbers vs Boston

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/bvsp?playerId=3834&teamId=2

  76. mko

Karstens will not help them thats my argument he is just straight awful now and in the future

What are you talking about? He was injured a lot of the time, he wasn’t that bad when he pitched in the Majors and he was very good in AAA this year. He’s still young, he has gotten better since the last time he saw the Majors, he had a shot to make the team this year…he’s alright.

  77. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Cash always lies about stuff like this.

  78. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

“We need to find a way to get Manny.

    Maybe a 3-team deal.”

Tank not on my watch! I can see it now. Manny urinating in the new Yankee Stadium outfield. Manny announcing to Girardi that he isn’t going to be playing. Manny dropping a ball in the outfield and standing there grinning while the winning run crosses the plate. And the one that never bothered me but would NEVER play in the Bronx: Manny styling after hitting a homer.

Manny is NOT suited for pinstripes in my opinion!

  79. Cheesyhoboe

Uh, remember yesterday when Cashman was asked about trades and he said he was “making calls here and there”, and then a couple hours later we had Nady and Marte?

  80. mel

    dontfirecash,

Theoretically, yes, IPK would be better. But Yankees already got burned by depending on young starters. Kennedy, and, to a lesser extent, Hughes have to earn their way back. They need to develop at the proper pace and pressure got to both of them.

    Imagine this:

    CC
    Wang
    Joba
    Pettitte
    Moose
(Where’s Washburn you ask? Who cares, you got CC!)

    or:

    Wang
    Joba
    Pettitte
    Moose
    Washburn/Hughes

You can never have too much legit starting pitching. Ask the Sox when they let Arroyo go. Ask the Yankees when the 2 rooks didn’t work out and Wang went down.

At the very least, Washburn can be our innings eater. :)

  81. PittsburghYankeeFan

    SJ44

Why would Manny never be a Yankee, by the way (and I happen to agree with you, as I post to irritate any Boston trolls)?

He grew up 8 blocks from YS, didn’t he?

  82. SJ44

The Yankees have no interest in Manny.

They don’t want him to DH. Matsui will be the DH next year.

They don’t want to deal with Manny, his posse, his moods, Boras, none of it.

Brandon will tell you better than I but, one of the reasons Manny likes not playing in NY is to not have to deal with his former homies in Washington Heights.

He would have to deal with that if he came to the Yankees.

It won’t ever happen. From the Steinbrenners on down, they want no part of Manny Ramirez.

If Omar wants to take that one, good luck to him.

  83. Fredo Corleone

    “Jarrod’s numbers vs Boston”

    Ugh!

Not shocking though. Good teams tend to thrash bad pitchers

  84. Dennis

being very good in AAA means nothing. do the names Igawa, Clippard mean anything to you. These guys and Karstens are AAAA pitchers nothing more. and i will bet anything Karstens will have a 5 ERA in the NL at best.

  85. dave

wait is there confirmation on washburn? someone have a link.

  86. Cheesyhoboe

Kennedy doesn’t really need any more time in the minors. He pitched a one-hitter in his last start and three-hitter before that. More importantly, his pitching coach said he had a mechanical flaw corrected which was affecting his control.

  87. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

SJ: not to mention, the fans would never welcome him.

  88. SJ44

Washburn is a better pitcher than both Ponson and Rasner. He’s a decent back end of the rotation guy for a contending team.

Good cutter, works quickly, and has the ability to pitch well in big games.

For the prices on the market, getting him is a smart move. Its just money and the Yankees have plenty of that.

  89. Enoch44

Washburn is a horrible pitcher and a horrible idea. I’m going to have faith that Cashman’s not going to do this.

He’d get shelled in fenway tomorrow.

  90. JR Yankees

    Mel:

Just got back to my computer…I didn’t mean to put a scare to all the O’neil lovers. That was unfair of me.

However, I have no clue which number he will wear. I guess it’s possible.

  91. PittsburghYankeeFan

    SJ 44

All good points. I never thought about the reverse with the Washington Heights homies.

It would be insanity, but the thought of Manny and ARod hitting 3-4 or 4-3 in the same line up is kind of interesting.

With Nady on the roster and Ajax coming up in 1-2 years, Abreu’s salary is gone, and to upgrade to Manny would only take another 4-5 million.

The concept is intriguing, although the reality would likely be ugly.

  92. crawdaddie

I think the Mariners are trying to holdup the Yankees on Washburn which is why that trade hasn’t gone down.

  93. SJ44

The Yankees play more teams than just the Red Sox.

Just looking at raw numbers and drawing conclusions isn’t the proper way to view statistics.

He’s a veteran pitcher who, over the course his career, keeps his team in most of his starts over 5+ innings.

Doesn’t go deep into games but, he does know how to pitch and work his way around lineups.

He’s not going to win a Cy Young but, he’s also not going to embarrass you either.

For the Yankees current needs, he’s an upgrade to what they have right now.

  94. cano he didnt

i say try IPK again, now that his “mechanical” error is fixed all hes gotta do is learn to not nibble in the bigs and hopefully hughes will be ready for next year as i see him being much better than IPK, no need for washburn, weve already got a couple mediocre starters.

  95. mel

    Rebecca,

Gotta disagree on the fans. As long as Manny hits HR they will embrace him. He’s never been hated like Papi, Schilling, Paps, Beckett.

And as stupid and crazy as Manny is, he’s got charisma. The fans tolerate A-rod because he’s the best player in the game, but they don’t LOVE him. They don’t really like him off the field. They would love Manny and his manic energy.

  96. Patrick â„¢

“Washburn is a better pitcher than both Ponson and Rasner. He’s a decent back end of the rotation guy for a contending team.”

No doubt SJ, he’ll be a good pickup if Cashman decides to pull the trigger. I’m just hoping they don’t give away anyone too valuable. I’ve heard the Mariners are asking about Gardner and Melky. Gardner maybe but theres no way we can trade Melky for Jarrod freaking Washburn.

  97. dontfirecash

In 5 of his last 6 seasons pitching(including 2008) Jarod Washburn has had an ERA+ of 100 or less.

  98. cano he didnt

not sure what to think of manny on the yanks, but weve made other players with attitudes straight so who knows if manny can change. but having him bat next to arod does have a decent ring to it

  99. SJ44

Gotta look at the long view of Manny. His OPS is down significantly the past two years.

He isn’t the same hitter he was in the past.

Sure, he has hot streaks but, the consistency hasn’t been there over the better part of the last two regular seasons.

He was great in the post-season last year.

But, taking in his age, all of the “Manny being Manny” stuff, and everything else, do you really think he fits what the Yankees do? Of course not.

Its why they won’t touch him. They will gladly sit back and let Boras pawn him off on somebody else. Hopefully, the Mets.

  100. TGFizeek

Do we still need Sabathia? I know it sounds crazy but with Wang
    Petitte
    Joba
    Moose
    Washburn/Hughes/IPK/Rasner
AND some of the farmhands we have today the rotation looks crowded.
I personally think this rotation plus CC in FA means lotsa title for years to come, but would love to hear the consensus on this.

  101. Gus

I love Paul O’neil as much as anybody but damn who cares about a stupid number!!!!!!!!!!!!!If Marte gets 21 and the boo the dude for it I think that is the lamest thing ever. Honestly just because somebody else wears 21 does not mean the team or the player are disrespecting Mr.O’Neil. I think he was a great Yank but not on the 2,6,42,51 level

  102. SJ44

They aren’t trading anybody of value for Washburn Patrick.

Its strictly a salary dump. Meaning, if the Yankees take on the money, they don’t give up significant assets in return.

They aren’t trading Melky for Jarrod Washburn. Not happening.

  103. PittsburghYankeeFan

So Boston does not pick up his option next year. Where does Manny go?

Who has the cash and the patience to put up with his idiocy?

    (1) mets
    (2) yankees
    (3) cubs (ha,ha–could you just see Lou and Manny)

    I’m not sure anyone else.

  104. PJH

Id rather see what an Aceves or IPK can give us instead of locking in Washburn for millions next year.

  105. Cheesyhoboe

Moose and Pettitte are gone after this season unless we resign them.

  106. mel

    Cheesyhoboe,

One or both will want to pitch in the New Stadium.

But getting Washburn will help if they decide not to.

  107. Patrick â„¢

“They aren’t trading anybody of value for Washburn Patrick.

Its strictly a salary dump. Meaning, if the Yankees take on the money, they don’t give up significant assets in return.

They aren’t trading Melky for Jarrod Washburn. Not happening.”

I’m hoping you are right. In that case it would be a slam dunk move for Cashman. However I hope Seattle doesn’t saddle us with Vidro’s contract, he is absolutely worthless at this point and he would steal a roster spot from someone that could actually help the team.

The thing is, Seattle isn’t a poor team, they can handle Washburn’s contract. Thats why I’m thinking they might demand that we take Vidro or they might demand a better prospect. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

  108. Gus

    Dear TGF,

I say we go for CC give him a 5 year deal even if by year 5 worst case year 4 he will be grossly overpaid. The team makes so much profit already plus they will sell out 81 games next season not to mention the numrous strings of revenue they will have in 09

  109. JR Yankees

    Thanks Gus:

And again, I don’t want to reopen that can of worms like when Hawkins chose #21 and a lot of people freaked out. I should have wrote (/sarcasm) after my post.

However, for the sake of my opinion, no matter what number he chooses, he’ll probably want the number he’s been wearing (I hear 43 which is Rasner’s) anyway. Whichever it happens to be anybody that boos him would be ridiculous just like last time.

  110. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Honestly, it’s hard to see Manny going anywhere other than Boston…but he’s worn out his welcome.

  111. Steve

Washburn had two awful starts this year when he gave up 7 runs and 9 runs. Taking those two starts out his ERA is 3.37 in 112.2 innings. Over the month he has a 2.97 era and 1.23 whip in 33.1 innings. Thats better than Ponson and Rasner.

  112. PJH

If Wang makes september return, we could go deep in the playoffs. Even with a 3 of Moose Andy and Joba, we could make serious run at the World series

  113. Vanessa

Cash is brilliant. The Yanks have already stole Nady and Marte. The team already looks more threatening.
    http://flairforthedramatic.mlblogs.com

  114. justin

I don’t want washburn on this team. Sir sidney is just fine. We don’t need a chipmunk as our 5th starter

  115. SJ44

Seattle isn’t in position to demand anything. They are trying to dump salary because they want to blow up that team and the team may be in the market.

The Yankees will walk away before taking on a contract or player they don’t want.

They aren’t in the situation where they have to go that route. Especially after yesterday’s trade.

Barring unforeseen developments (like Washburn refusing to waive his no trade to come to NY), I expect them to do the Washburn deal in the next couple of days.

  116. Guiseppe Franco

For the prices on the market, getting him is a smart move. Its just money and the Yankees have plenty of that.

It would be a smart move if they only had Washburn for the rest of the season.

But they would be guaranteeing him a spot in the rotation for next year too. If he doesn’t pan out for one reason or another, he’s dead weight on the roster and blocking someone from the minors who could help the team.

And teams don’t usually DFA players making $10M+. Look at Hawkins. He was horrible all season and only made $3.5M. Yet he was still on the active roster for the first 102 games.

I don’t like this move at all.

  117. SJ44

Team may be **on** the market. As in, for sale.

We need an edit button! lol

  118. Anthony

SJ44 what do you think about nady/marte joining the yanks

  119. dontfirecash

I agree that Washburn is better than Ponson and Rasner. I just don’t think he is worth $14 million or whatever he is owed the next 1.5 years.

  120. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    Hey Craw! How’s it going?!

Well I turned on Baseball Today (or whatever is before the FOX Game) just in time for all of the heads over there to talk about what a great trade this was for the Yankees (totally agree) and how the Yankees stole those players (don’t agree).

If we have kids that can help Pittsburgh rebuilt, then we stole nothing. We both took care of our needs.

About Washburn? Not convinced, don’t think he’s better than Ponson certainly and we got Ponson for a song. Don’t want him.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. If the Yankees pick him up then of course I cheer for him. But for the record, I don’t want him and don’t think we need him.

But I am loving Nady and Marte!

  121. dontfirecash

5 out of the last 6 years, Washburn has been a below league average pitcher. For what he makes, that is a ripoff.

  122. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

“I don’t want washburn on this team. Sir sidney is just fine. We don’t need a chipmunk as our 5th starter”

    :D

Don’t know about the chipmunk part but agree with the rest. Sir Sidney is more than alright with me!

  123. mel

Jeannie just put Rosenthal on the spot about Mark Grace and he shut down Grace. Ouch!

  124. SJ44

Or, they could trade him in the off-season if it doesn’t work out.

Just because he has a no trade, doesn’t mean wouldn’t get traded.

If he pitches well, he would actually have some value to the Yankees on the trade market.

Everybody wants to go “young” with their pitching until the young guys pitch and either struggle or get hurt.

Its happened all over baseball this year.

Hughes, Kennedy, Buchholz, the young Rockies pitchers, all have struggled.

Several of the Braves and Blue Jay young pitchers have suffered season ending injuries requiring surgery.

Veteran pitchers, if they pitch well, always have some type of value in the marketplace.

  125. dave

seriously where is this washburn stuff coming from? pete is the only thing i’ve seen about washburn…

  126. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Who is this blond moron on fox? Hank hinting at the Yankees going after Bonds. Um no, he was likely asked if the Yankees will talk about Bonds, he said yes. Since when is that hinting that the Yankees will go after Bonds.

  127. Gus

Getting Washburn for pretty much zero is a no brainer. There is no debate about it like steve posted he has been pitching better and maybe ia ma optimistic but i feel that the excitiment of coming here will make him do well. If he comes close to how he has been over the last month than we are gonna be in such great shape to beat out at least Tampa. If we got my nephew Wonger back my dream of winning the world series in game 6 or 7 at Yankee Stadium to close the place out may come true. Can you imagine???????

  128. Gus

I would leave yankee stadium only when they make us leave if we win the ws at the stadium this season

  129. Dr. J

We need to give Washburn a soft landing spot.

His first start as a Yankee on Sunday Night against Boston?

If he gets killed, the next morning will be all over how this was a terrible trade.

Then again, we are not in any position to give away games and Ponson against that lineup is disaster

  130. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

…Were Joe Buck and Tim McCarver just praising the Yankees?

  131. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Either my wants are very simple or I have been living right and the stars have all aligned to bring about some perfection in the last day or so.

I got to watch last night’s game; I am getting to watch the rerun of it right now, (bottom of the 9th just starting); I got to watch a million iterations of Melky’s catch of Manny’s almost homer on Yankees classics when I turned the station to watch what was on YES; and I got to watch the FOX talking heads remark about the brilliant deal the Yankees just made in getting Marte and Nady (and I totally agree with that by the way).

(And of course this is all on the heels of watching the Yankees turn into second-half Titans and watch the Sux lead over the Yankees precariously slip away.)

To parapharse Joe D, I thank the Lord for making me a Yankee fan!

I am such a happy kid right now.

  132. Jeter

    Every team, Every Team

  133. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

So what numbers did Nady and Marte take?

  134. Papi

    Every Game, Every Game

  135. Psyluk

Bobby Meachem doing the intros? What, they couldn’t get the guy who was serving Fenway Franks?

This feels like a bad omen…

  136. canocabrera

Well I guess we have the ten best players in baseball!

  137. Chaz

if meachem is as hesitant waving guys home as he was reading that lineup maybe arod wont die by the end of the season

  138. LeoSerra

meacham is worse at public speaking than at sending guys from third. he just called melky “up-and-young-coming.”

  139. tim boat

already missed the first pitch of an inning. great job Fox

  140. Cajun Yankee

Game time temp is 83º and humidity is 54%. Must be nice…

  141. Big Joe

Now I know how Meacham got the job. He keeps telling Girardi that he’s the best 3rd base coach in the american league

  142. joe

    Nady – #29
    Marte – #34

  143. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Fox did a pretty good job with the All Star game, so of course they’re going to be annoying today.

  144. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

I guess it’s really a nice thing but I hate watching Jeter always making nice with the Sux players.

    Ugh.

  145. Psyluk

Oh wow, 3 out of 4 games twelve times this year. Professor McCarver broke out the abacus for this one.

  146. Ron

How about Anthony Reyes going to Cleveland? Right now, the track record is pretty bad for ex-USC aces. The last three, if I’m not mistaken, were Prior, Reyes, and IPK. Reyes still has a chance to be good, and Cleveland got him for a relief prospect.

    Goddamn Mike Lowell.

  147. Phil - 27 in '08

For all the criticism of Joe Buck, he was very respectful in doing the announcing of the players at the All Star game. He gave extra time for the Yankees and put emphasis on Yankee Hall of Famers for the crowd.

  148. Joe m

People get over the #21 deal. He was good but not great the number will never be retired

  149. Global Warming

Buck has never been a problem for me, it’s always been McCarver.

  150. DFox

“Oh wow, 3 out of 4 games twelve times this year. Professor McCarver broke out the abacus for this one.”

    LOL!

  151. mel

    I really hate Wakefield…

    Be good, Andy!

  152. Wayne Tollenson Boys

I’m sick of hearing about how great the Red Sox are at home.

Post All-star break I think the Yanks are 8-1 in their last 9 games at Fenway? Can someone check this?

  153. PBL

haha, meachem looks good at the intros now

  154. tim boat

Marte got 34? Wasn’t that Hughes’ number? Whats with the Yankees giving out other players’ numbers this year while they’re on the DL. Not cool.

I feel bad for those who bought Hughes jerseys.

  155. Ron

Lou Pinella having fun in Chicago. Hasn’t gotten himself ejected yet.

  156. Psyluk

    Dan Begin’s no Sinatra, haha.

  157. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Both Buck and McCarver are better than the guys that called the ALDS last year.

  158. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Alex, you idiot

  159. gayle

glad that bobby thinks every player we have is the best in the world, best in the game and if they are not the best right now then they soon will be

  160. Ron

    Nope, he’s been tossed.

  161. DFox

Hughes is going back to 65.

  162. Ron

    Andy, strikes.

  163. Wolf In Pinstripes

Youkilis looks like a gay jack-in-the-box on steroids when he bats.

  164. Chaz

i wouldve like gardner to get one more start today and nady get here tomorrow night
he hit a couple of bullets last night but right at jacoby and coco
he absolutely had to go down and get his confidence back but i felt like he was turning it around but then again i really like him so im probably a bit biased

  165. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Aww, Andy, can we please do this strike throwing thing?

  166. Psyluk

Youkilis has the 2nd most annoying batting stance in baseball, right behind Craig Counsell.

  167. Ron

Oh, this is just a great spot.

    Game’s started, boys!

  168. Dana

I wish there was some explanation as to why Betemit continues to survive this roster.

  169. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    ….

Andy. Outs. OUTS. Not hits. OUTS.

  170. Psyluk

This has the feeling of “letdown” all over it.

  171. Ron

    Wonderful.

  172. Wayne Tollenson Boys

Had to look up Yanks vs. Sox at Fenway.

So far this year: Yanks are 1-0, thanks to 1-0 win yesterday.

    2007:
Yanks 2-1 second half @ fenway

    2006:
Yanks 5-0 second half @ fenway (5 game sweep)

    2005:
Yanks 4-2 second half @ fenway (swept 3 game series)

  173. Ron

Looks like Nady’s going to have to hit two grand slams instead of just the one.

  174. joe

    A-Rod’s fault

  175. Psyluk

Dana, its because Betemit can play every position in the infield and can switch hit. Not well, but he can.

  176. sw

    Settle down, Andy. :?

  177. will

pettite doesn’t have it. good game

  178. Buzz

    wow this umpire suxs

  179. Phil - 27 in '08

Karstens being sent to the Pirates while McCutchen and Ohlendorf have been assigned to Indy (Pirates’ AAA team). No word on Tabata yet.

  180. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

When Andy started at Fenway last September, it wasn’t particularly pretty, either.

Yankees scored 6 in the 8th to win it.

  181. Alan

Andy is not as crisp as his last outing. It looks like he’s aiming the ball.

  182. Psyluk

This ump has a tiny strike zone.

  183. Wangawa

This Pettitte guy stinks. We should have Phil Franchise pitching this game.

… I’m referring to Phil Coke, of course.

  184. Pedro

Hope Yankees’ hitters are paying attention. Take some freaking pitches.

  185. Buzz

andy is not getting anything on the coners

  186. Ron

This is my least favorite umpire team in the bigs. Angel Hernandez thinks the game is about him, Marty Foster’s half-blind, and I’m pretty sure we’ve had issues with Cousins in the past.

  187. bob

pay a guy 28 million a year, you’d think he could handle a ground ball.

  188. Steve

Anyone else having trouble getting onto NYYFANS?

  189. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    What does “5 and 10 guy” mean? I know, I know, I’m slow…

  190. BBB

ugh, this is why I can’t wait for Nady to replace Abreu in RF next year.

And to make matters even worse, my local Fox affiliate is airing Phillies/Braves so I have to listen to Sterling. Although thats better than McCarver, but I wanted to see Nady, spammit. Sick of Sterling’s RS fellatio, right now he is acting as if Wakefield is Cy Young…

  191. Phil - 27 in '08

5 years with one team, 10 in the majors total.

  192. Psyluk

Rebecca, it means that a player has ten years of major league experience, and 5 years with one team, which affords him a no trade clause in trades.

  193. Buzz

    this umpire is a joke

  194. SJ44

    Rebecca,

10 and 5 means 10 years of ML service time and 5 years with the same team.

When a player has that, he has a trade veto option on his deal.

  195. PBL

5 years with a team 10 years in the majors. per the new collective bargaining agreement, 5 and 10 players need to approve any trade they are involved in

  196. BBB

    OK, time to answer back!

  197. Pedro

Andy seems to feel the pressure when pitching at Fenway.

How about taking some pitches now guys?

  198. Ron

Carlos Marmol’s command has gone in the toilet. This is what happens when young arms are ridden into the ground.

  199. Cassandra

Watching the game on Fox, Theo says they will trade Manny if he waves his contract.

Wow. You usually don’t see a GM put that out on the air. Obviously, he’s said this to Manny’s agent, if not Manny, on a personal level.

It’s like he’s publically daring Manny.

  200. Wolf In Pinstripes

OK, it’s only one inning and only two runs.

    Come on, bats!

  201. SJ44

How do you think Andy is “under pressure”.

An error on a routine ball cost the Yankees 2 runs. It happens.

Has nothing to do with “pressure”.

A July game isn’t a “pressure” game. It may be for fans but not for players.

  202. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Thanks guys! Really appreciate that.

  203. Buddy Biancalana

Marte will most likely change his # when he gets to NY.

  204. Ron

Ladies and Gentlemen, now batting, #29, Xavier Nady!

  212. rod-knee

is it just me or do you think a few of these called strikes have more to do with the fact that the game is on fox rather than where they actually cross the plate?

  213. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

Was that Cashman’s Dr. Evil pose?

  214. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Cassandra: No, I haven’t, but a friend did give me the book. Why do you ask?

  215. JoeT 28 in 09!!

    I see Nady has power

  216. Ron

This is Perkins all over again…except we’re trailing 2-0.

  217. Alan

    Nady wearing Igawa’s old number.

  218. #9

    “#29, Xavier Nady!”

Hey! That use to be Bob Shirley’s #… I am outraged!!

  219. Fredo Corleone

Sounds like Buck is angling to give Nady’s introductory speech at Cooperstown.

  220. Psyluk

Wow, McCarver is on fire today.

The key to catching and hitting a knuckleball……is to wait as long as you can.

  221. Cassandra

I only raise it cuz it has a great segment on the 5 and 10 rule, sometimes known as the Curt Flood rule.

  222. Pedro

    Back to sucking at offense.

  223. BBB

Wow. How come Wakefields strike zone is the size of Texas?

Wow, I am REALLY not liking this home plate umpire. I don’t think Andy likes it, either.

  233. rod-knee

it’s official pettite is not going to get one called strike today.

  234. Psyluk

Unless Pettitte grooves it down the middle, he’s not getting the call.

  235. Buzz

wow! out of the 5 pitches 4 of them were strikes…

  236. Pedro

That’s BS. THe strikezone is way bigger for Wakefield.

  237. BBB

    “It’s not, those are strikes”

Are you serious? lol please, Andy’s strike zone is the size of a f’n postage stamp. I guess these umps are feeling a little bitter about how hard their boys got pwned last night.

  238. Ron

Andy looks about as bad as we’ve seen him this year.

  239. Big Joe

I really can’t take one of the yankee “throwaway” games on national tV. Come on Andy.

  240. Ari

am I the only one who thinks this strike zone looks a little tight?

  241. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

It’s been two innings, Pedro. Geez.

  242. Psyluk

Wakefield’s ball drops through the top of the zone. Pettitte is trying to come through the corners. The ump has a really tight zone around the edges of the plate. I didn’t really have an issue with Wakefield’s pitches, with the exception that the Yankee hitters swung through them.

  243. chaossolver

omg tim mccarver… no more please no more

  244. Buzz

this is the smallest strike zone i ever seen

  245. Big Joe

He’s getting squeezed but he is not sharp either. He has missed a bunch up in the zone. Definitely not hitting the glove (yet)

  246. Cody

“Marte (No. 40) is also in the Yankees bullpen and could make his debut if needed.”

I’m guessing he’s misspoken, right? Everyone is saying #34 – they wouldn’t give away Hughes’ and Wang’s numbers just because they’re on the DL.. this was posted at the Bomber’s Beat blog.

  247. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Ari: Nope.

  248. Pedro

“It’s been two innings, Pedro. Geez.”

Eleven innings. Unless you think they were great last night.

  249. Ron

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I haven’t seen any REALLY egregious calls yet.

  250. Ari

OH.MY.GOD! This umpire has got to be kidding me. Andy should rifle one to his head.

  254. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

  258. bob

this ump is DEFINITELY pro redsox. his strike zone is ridiculous.

  259. Pedro

By design and with the help of the HP umpire, the Sux are driving Andy’s pitch count sky high. The bullpen will get work today.

  273. Buzz

  284. Ari

    Joe,
    Point taken.

  285. Big Joe

come on guys…you can’t really think certain umps favor certain teams. Their strike zones may favor certain “types of pitchers” but I don’t believe any of them intentionally pick sides. Andy needs to show control then he’ll get the edges. He’s being squeezed but its his own fault for the way he started by missing the glove so much.

  286. Psyluk

He’s a line drive hitter. It’s almost a throwback to the days when guys never struck out, but couldn’t hit it out of the park.

Just a friendly reminder. This blog is part of my newspaper and there are standards. Please refrain from obscene words and crude sexual references. Also, posting that you want to beat up one of the players or the umpire is not what we’re looking for here.

Try and add something intelligent. If you are unable, go someplace else.

  298. Buzz

  299. JR Yankees

Kevin Cash just went out and warned Wakefield that the Yankee dugout is quite suspicious so be a little closer to the plate this inning and Cousins will get back to normal in the fourth.

  300. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

…That 3-1 pitch was a ball when Andy threw it.

  301. SCRANTON

That should be 2 men on no outs.

  302. Ron

To be fair, I’m pretty sure Andy got that one too.

  303. JoeT 28 in 09!!

that 3-1 pitch was BS – that’s a ball all day in the bottom half of the inning

  304. Psyluk

I don’t think Wakefield’s had to wrap around the corner, which is why he got the call.

  305. Big Joe

Buzz – Wakefield does not throw one pitch anything like Andy throws it. The spots may be similar but how they get there is not by the same pitch.

  306. Psyluk

The Molina brothers need to have a footrace. It’s about time.

  307. BBB

Wow. This ump is seriously too much. Crack is wack, Mr Cousins!

  308. Ron

That’s hillarious. Crisp wasn’t even close to throwing out Molina.

And Andy got that 3-1 call in the AB to Cash.

  309. Psyluk

What?!?! Bobby Abreu is the best in the league with RISP?? Is that true or is Tim McCarver “pontificating” again?

  310. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Been getting ready to go out tonight. For anyone who watches the SOUP, Joel McHale is in Newport and we have tickets. (Bad planning on my part, forgot about the game. :( )

But anyway, can someone please tell me how the two runs scored? What was the error? I saw Alex’s. Was that the only one?

Also, I got to watch Andy pitch in the 2nd. Seriously, did this ump go to the Tim Donaghy school of officiating? Some of his calls were outrageous.

  311. SCRANTON

joeT, I think that would be a ground rule double because it became a dead ball when it hit the wall.

  339. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Looks better safe than sorry. We’re hitting Wakefield at least. I agree. If Bobby couldn’t make it easily better not to run us out of the inning.

By the way, when you’re tempted to tell Bobby Abreu what pitches to swing at, try to remember he is probably the best 2 strike hitter in the majors. Not that he doesn’t appreciate your counsel of course!

    :)

  340. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Ah. Well, we got one run. Keep Boston here and we’ve got as good a chance as any.

  344. blackdragon905

    ugh he just missed it

  345. Ron

Wakefield’s Knuckler may well pass through the strike zone on the way down. And he’s got a good one today. So that might be what’s happening. We see the pitch where it lands. That may not be where it crossed the plate (or didn’t).

  346. mel

Just a little more Grecian formula and we’d be up 4-2.

    Let’s go, Yankees!

  347. Psyluk

Trisha, I think it’s well known that the best 2 strike hitter in baseball is Manny Ramirez :( Hate to disagree, haha.

  348. Wangawa

Wow, Giambi just missed it. Oh well, we’re starting to hit Wakefield. I’m feeling good.

  349. Psyluk

Pedro, you really need to calm down. Considering how Pettitte has started the game, they’re in a good spot, down by only one run.

  350. Big Joe

Guys it’s not where the catcher catches it its where it crosses the front of homeplate. He’s doing it right. If yanks want to be in the back of the box knuckleballers have to keep it down and it ends up at the shoe level by the time its to the catcher. I throw a knuckler in a league and the low ones are strikes. If the yanks don’t like them they should move up in the box.

  351. BBB

ugh, so close. Two days in a row the beaneaters have gotten lucky now (yesterday w/all the line drives right at fielders)…

I can’t think of any good reason myself, SCRANTON. It really makes no sense whatsoever. Some fans here forget when Abreu was the offense at the beginning of the season and the reason we won some of the games we did.

  353. Buzz

is this umpire like this every game?

  354. Wander

Pettitte needs a couple of quick innings here.

  355. j

how was that 2nd pitch not a strike

  356. Joe from Long Island

I agree Pete – i figured, when Manny threw to 2nd – that Bobby would have scored.

  357. Psyluk

I think Pettitte needs to adjust to the fact that he’s not going to get that cut fastball over the outside corner and start to pound guys inside a little more. That said, it’s hard to do that when he’s constantly behind in the count.

  358. Pedro

Every inning he’s put the leadoff man on. Horrible job by Pettitte so far.

  359. Ron

“Guys it’s not where the catcher catches it its where it crosses the front of homeplate. He’s doing it right. 362. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Psyluk, I think I’d like to see the stats on that competition! In fact I’ll look them up myself.

But if you are right that it is Manny – and I’m not conceding that yet – I guarantee you Abreu isn’t far behind.

  363. JoeT 28 in 09!!

Psyluk – if it hits the top of the wall and bounces over it’s a home run, I don’t see why it would be different if it hits any other part of the wall. It was live when it bounced up and Manny had to wait for it so if it goes over it should be a home run.

Scranton – I agree 100% I love Bobby Abreu, there is one thing he doesn’t do well, and that is go back on fly balls that are near the wall, but I definitely want him back in pinstripes next year. He runs well, when he is hot he has one of the best swings in the game.. he has power, he can steal a base, he works the count better then anyone (maybe Giambi has him beat there). He does it all and there’s no reason to not want him on the team.

  364. CT

How is Wakefield getting strike calls that are in the dirt yet Andy has to throw it over the plate to get a strike? Ump is making me mad.

  365. Someone Else

  372. blackdragon905

strangest strike zone i have ever seen, how is this guy a mlb ump?

  373. Big Joe

Ron – Not crazy at all. I saw your post after I wrote mine and figured I wasted my time. Hitters hate it but I love mixing them in with my pitches, but only throw it about 20% of my pitches. I throw lots of them in warm up so umps can get used to the flight and where they cross the plate and end up in the glove.

    Manny poses for fly balls…

  377. BBB

Why is Abreu always playing so deep? I know it’s coming from the bench rather than being his own call. But..why? There was no one on base so “no doubles defense” was not necessary there. And like the saying always goes, anything that falls in behind an OF is the pitcher’s fault, anything in front of them is the fielder’s fault. So I don’t really understand the logic behind the way Abreu is positioned.

  378. Pedro

First call Pettitte gets. Even though the call went our way, the ump blows.

  379. kidjock

Meachem did right holding Abreu. That ball was back in the infield quickly, he would have been meat at the plate. Plus they are picking up wake now. Pett needs to adjust, this ump is not giving up the corners. Hate Manny, he is a terrible teammate. walking out the box? whatever.

  380. Psyluk

I love Manny Ramirez. He and Ron Artest need to start a blog together.

  381. Someone Else

Abreu is slowing down. His defense is getting as bad as Bernie’s in 2006. It’s bad. He still has plate discipline (you never lose that), but his power is really, really, going down the toilet.

You want to get rid of him too soon rather than too late; he’ll probably be a type A free agent at the end of the year, and that nets you two draft picks. Two draft picks + saved money is worth more than Abreu in 2009, especially with Nady able to move over.

  382. Zac

Pete.. Abreu would have been out. You complain more than Mike and the Mad Dogg. Thank gd your not our 3rd base coach.

  383. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Haha according to a website called ussmariner.com, the trade has been completed, it was at 1 pm, and the trade was Melky and Igawa for Washed-up burn and Vidro LOL. Meanwhile, the trade has not happened, also Melky is in the game and Cashman knows not to deal Melky when Robby is tearing up the place. Also, the trade is a salary dump, so we know that if the Mariners even ask for Melky, its not going to happen. Wow, how Mariner fans dream.

  429. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

You know there are trade rumors that I hear that I consider so utterly stupid and outrageous that I can’t believe anyone is even suggesting them. It’s one thing to suggest that you look at certain players at the end of the season and then make an evaluation. It’s another to go after your favorite “unfavorite player du semaine” and decide it’s time to trade him.

If we went with some of the suggestions here, we would be without Cano, Mussina, Giambi, Pettitte, and Damon right now!

That said, I’m sure it’s also my way of saying that there are certain players that I would be devastated to lose because of my belief in their value to the team, either offensively or defensively (or both) and it would kill my heart to lose them. So when their names come up I get naturally defensive.

One is Melky. Another is Bobby Abreu.

According to the Seattle Times, Washburn has told agent Scott Boras what he’d like as far as compensation goes for waiving his no-trade clause if dealt to the Yankees. The agent will verbally discuss this this with the two teams once an agreement in principle is reached. After that, once all final offers are on the table, Boras will phone Washburn and he’ll say yes or no. The Seattle Times believes a deal could be close, though it seems to be more of a hunch than anything else. Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner are among the possibilities to go to Seattle. “

  441. Cheesyhoboe

I’m not going to get on Nady too much. He’s facing a knuckleballer. It might be his first time ever facing a knuckler for all we know.

    Yay Aggressiveness!

  443. tim boat

Man, what was Meacham thinking sending Melky there?

  444. Psyluk

“He ain’t wearing pinstripes – he’s wearing the road uni”

Well that was euphemistic for his being a Yankee.

    :D

  452. Pedro

So unclutch Derek. Still, great to see that our offense has finally arrived in Boston.

  453. Someone Else

That run was -created- by Melky. Bunt single, steal second, go home on a single. Awesome.

“Regarding Abreu and draft picks. Everyone assumes the Yankees will get picks for him but there is no guarentee he turns down the Yankees offer of arbitration, he does like it here and all.”

Then they can trade him get even better value.

  455. Psyluk

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Pedro, you need to calm down :)

  456. PBL

I’d be happy if abreu accepts arbitration, we’ll get him for 1 year well below market value.

  457. mel

    Ron,

LOL. Good one. But Gardner would’ve seen a minimum of 12 pitches.

  458. Someone Else

Eh, Jeter hit it hard. Unfortunately, Lowell is a black hole for singles toward 3B.

  459. Yankee Trader

Nady has 10 assists, 5 double plays and 2 errors in RF, so without really seeing him play, my guess that his arm is above average. Who’s leading in OF assists in RF in NL?

  460. j

andy has not given up an earned run today. :)

“Jarrod Washburn reportedly will want something extra in order to waive his no-trade clause to go to New York”

That doesn’t speak very highly of Washburn as far as I’m concerned. Isn’t going from the worst team in baseball to a contender compensation enough?

  463. Phil

We’ve been making some loud outs in between hits, and a big rally could be coming.

  464. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

I would have thought the chance to pitch for a team that is attempting to contend, rather than pitching for one that is clearly NOT and still getting all the money they owe you – would have been compensation enough to waive a NTC. But that’s just me.

  466. Joe I

To show you how bad Fox is. I’m in the Philly area, so they have Phillies/Braves. No problem, I understand that, but the Red Sox score 2 runs in the first, they break in with a game break as soon as possible. Now, the Yanks have the lead, I have not seen one game break with any of the Yankees runs.

  467. Dan

I’m think Marte is wearing 40, not 34.

    isn’t 34 Hughes’ number?

  468. vinny-b

We’re retarded if we trade Melky for Washburn. This is a salary dump for Seattle and frankly he’s not that good.

  473. JoeT 28 in 09!!

they better not trade anything of major league value to the Mariners for Washburn. I’m not a big fan of Melky, but I think we can do better for him. Though if we trade Melky that opens up the possibility that Abreu will stay next year and I’m alllll for that.

  474. miggs

Imagine if Cano could ever find his swing before the all-star break.

The guy would be one of the top 5 hitters in the game. Add in his GREAT defense this year(yes I said great) and the fact that he plays 2nd base and what you have is one of the most valuable players in the league.

This team seems to have its swagger back. Getting behind early and chipping away, now with the lead. Its like they don’t think they can lose right now. Its great to see.

  475. Ron

leader in the majors has 11 outfield assists, nady has 10. so looks like he does have a good arm

  482. kidjock

vinny, a couple inches and Melk would have been out. When Melk laid that bunt down I didn’t think there was a chance of getting him out, but the kid has a good arm. Not going to be able to run against the Sox when he’s in there and there isn’t a knuckleballer on the mound.

  483. SCRANTON

I don’t like Alberto. He’s a good fielder but his bat is just really, REALLY weak.

  485. gnome

ya know, one thing ive noticed with melky….he seems to constantly be looking for the ball at the wrong times….the bunt, he kept looking over his shoulder; rounding third, same thing, he kept looking back instead of just running….especially running to first, JUST RUN!!! you cant control anything there, RUN!!!! looking back will only slow you down, and rounding third, i know meacham isnt the strongest 3rd base coach, but honestly, you have committed to going home, RUN!!!!! one of these days that may catch up to him….i hope im wrong, and maybe i am way off base and he should be watching for it on the force at first and when he is already committed to going to the plate, but it seemed off….that said watching the ball while he was on his way to second was great….but sometimes you just have to realize when to run full out….

  486. Yankee Trader

    PBL
Abreu accepts arbitration?? First I’m sure he’d explore the FA market 1st, since he has till 12/02/08 to accept or decline arbitration. I doubt the arbiter would knock his current 16M salary down more than 20%. Is 12.8M worth it?

  487. Psyluk

Nady is a good fielder with a good arm, but don’t gauge that based off of assists. Manny is always in the league leaders in assists because of the wall and he’s not exactly Willie Mays out there.

  488. The Vince Black Show

  491. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Only because the Yankee organization seems to make intelligent and well-thought-out decisions as opposed to knee jerking the way many fans do, I cannot imagine that they would give up on Melky. The kid is our defense. And as we’ve seen, we can score runs even when he is in a slump. But you don’t want runners running freely on your CF, and runners do not. On top of it, Melky has been showing signs of breaking out of his slump.

I cannot imagine the Yankees trading Melky. I cannot imagine getting over it soon if they ever did…

This is one of the comment from the Mariners blog, regarding the washburn trade.

“Dave – Should I still do backflips if the TurboBus for Melky/Igawa talk is true?
My gut tells me yes. I’d be happy just to see the both of them gone in exchange for a bag of peanuts.”

    wow.

  517. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

j – Gardner would make more sense since he was just sent down to make room for Nady. (I thought that’s what I read.)

I would be ill to give up that defense (Melky) in the outfield. I remember feeling so deflated every time I would see the merry go round of runners when a ball was hit to either Bernie or Damon…

  518. CaptainsCorner

Washburn wanting money to waive the no trade is definitely coming from BoraSS his agent. You would think that Washburn would run here just to get off that dreadful team. Mariners should be the ones paying him a couple of thousand to waive since the Yanks are picking up his whole salary. Is that extra $ really important to someone that is on a team that has lost 70 games already this year? It makes players seem like such idiots.

  519. vinny-b

well, if they moved Gardner in the trade for Washburn, it lets you know, how the yankee scouts feel…

  520. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Is my snarky comment about Nady’s ABs really triggering all these unneeded apologies?

  521. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Hughes went back to 65, where I believe he should have stayed. Marte is wearing 34, and Nady, as we all know is wearing 29.

  522. vinny-b

if this uss mariner report is true, maybe it is a Colin Curtis, and not Gardner.

  523. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Again, if Washburn can help us at the back end of the rotation then so be it – or even as a long reliever out of the bullpen. Though that sounds like so much of a salary dump that I have to wonder about Hughes and Wang actually returning. Maybe it was worth it to Cashman to get r4id of Igawa.

I was not excited about getting a 5.4 ERA (or whatever it is), lefty or not. I still am not.

  524. Vince Black

A rod needs to steal second and third….
or we need a new third baseman who can steal more bases.

  525. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

If Washburn wants money to waive his NTC, then hes not getting dealt. Wow, this is getting funny with Boras in the equation. Washburn must really not want to leave Seattle.

  526. miggs

Trisha- got that response but had to run out to a BBQ.
Its good to see you back.
To go back to an earlier topic (which I’m sure has been beaten to death)…. do you guys like trade that was made (w/ McCutcheon and Karstens) or the ORIGINAL trade (Kontos, Coke) ?

Personally I liked the earier one better. Not sure if we’d ever see Kontos or Coke, but I felt McCutchen had a chance. i know some disagree. What’s the consensus?

  527. mel

Let Seattle pay to vig. They want him gone more than we need him.

  528. Big Joe

I just don’t think Gardner is better than Melky. Melky is still young and will be a 15-20 hr guy once fully developed and I like his overall defense better, plus Robbie seems to need him around. I think when his career is done he will have had a pretty decent one. I know Peter hated on him this year and wanted Brett but the kid either was not ready or doesn’t have it.

  529. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Vince Black, I hope your kidding

  530. JoeT 28 in 09!!

shouldn’t give up anything of value to take on Vidro and Washburn. It’s a salary dump for them so if we are going to pay them we shouldn’t give up anything and if they are going to pay a portion of it then we still shouldn’t have to give up anything too good

  531. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

  537. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

here’s this from rotoworld on washburn:
Jarrod Washburn reportedly will want something extra in order to waive his no-trade clause to go to New York.
Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner are among the possibilities to go to Seattle.

    http://rotoworld.com/Content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=2573

  549. DFox

Can you blame Wakefield? It was just a matter of how many times he wanted to get burned by Cano today.

  550. Big Joe

Rubin – There is a problem with your theory of “its better with both”…Gardners OBP is .227. You can’t steal while your butt is on the pine!

Seriously though, it’s pretty damn obvious that Nady’s barely seen Wakefield. He looks lost.

  556. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

I have a feeling the Washburn/Yankees deal will be announced shortly. I think it will be Colin Curtis and Kei Igawa for Washburn and Vidro, who, since there is no AAAA, will be shipped to Scranton.

Good, Gardner can get some AAA ABs. The dropoff in speed with JC really isn’t significant.

    And what the hell Cano?

  560. Psyluk

I think that was a botched hit and run.

    By either way, why steal?

  561. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

…Robbie, you weren’t supposed to do that.

Nady worked a good AB though and gets a free count next inning.

  562. j

  563. Jeff NJ

Another bad call. Robbie was safe.

  564. vinny-b

    vanessa: thank you.

Now the yankees can tell Washburn, “thank you. But, no thank you.” And we keep melky & gardner.

  565. Matt

Umm… is it just me or was Cano’s foot on the bag before Pedroia even started to move his glove to make the tag? Cano definitely looked safe. Again, another blown call that could have cost us runs in a close game.

  566. Pedro

That looked safe. Still, dumb move Girardi.

  567. mike

i definitely agree with regards to washburn wanting something to come here. if playing for a contender over the mlb-worst club isnt compensation enough, then let him rot in seattle. for most guy it is an honor to play for the yankees…idk who the hell this guy thinks he is demanding something to come over here.

  568. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

That’s great. Instead of a walk, Nady gets the privilige of facing Wakefield all over again next inning.

    Robby cannot run.

  569. DFox

Yeah, it would have been a nice play and all but he looked pretty safe.

It seems like the majority of these umpires are on the NESPN Fox subsidiary payroll.

  570. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

What the hell is McCarver saying? Good play by Kevin Cash? The throw was only 10 feet over the guys head, it was a good job getting down and tagging Robbie.

  571. CaptainsCorner

Cano looked safe at 2nd. He should not be stealing bases. He is not fast and doesn’t hustle when he runs.

  572. Psyluk

It was a close call. Either way, why try the double steal or the hit and run? Just let Nady get some good hacks in there. He was putting together a decent AB. Oh well.

  573. Vince Black

“Jarrod Washburn reportedly will want something extra in order to waive his no-trade clause to go to New York.”

  575. BBB

  584. Big Joe

  585. vinny-b

scott boras = anti christ (baseball version)

  586. Psyluk

Mel, it doesn’t matter what Wakefield’s pitch count is. He can throw 300 if he wanted to.

  587. Matt

Terrible call? That’s a great call. You steal a base with guys who have decent speed off a guy who’s throwing slow knuckleballs in a one run game. If Nady singles, the extra run coming from the steal is huge in this kind of game. Cano was in fact safe too, a horrible call by an out of position 2nd base umpire again.

3 blown calls at 2nd base in this series through 14 innings. Horrible job so far this series.

  588. Vince Black

I like the double steal call by Girardi…….especially when you are safe at second base by about a foot.

pitches that split the plate are not strike but ones the bounce in the dirt are. i can ump better

  594. Pedro

Cano should have been safe. That, however, doesn’t make the call by Girardi right. It was a dumb decision.

  595. SCRANTON

Mike Hampton is over due to go yard.

  596. Psyluk

Is the shift really THAT useful?

  597. Big Joe

Vince Black – Pete asked us to stay off the violent posts. I think we can respect that right?

  598. BBB

LOL @ Waldman…’but why did they DFA Hawkins instead of sending Giese down’? Geez, I couldn’t imagine why….

  599. Vince Black

If screwface hits one here I’m gonna scream

  600. fred from jersey

    he was safe pete.

that was another bad call at 2nd in this series.

  601. Matt

You guys aren’t realizing this, but stealing the extra base off a knuckleballer is HUGE. Not only does it get an extra runner into scoring position, but it guarantees that a knuckler that the catcher can’t handle scores a free run. Maybe off of a lesser pitcher that was a bad move, but in that spot, off that type of pitcher, in that type of game, it was a very good idea.

  602. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Oh my God. Mike Hampton pitching.

  603. Vince Black

Vince Black – Pete asked us to stay off the violent posts. I think we can respect that right?

yeah i agree its a bad habit of mine……….i say it all of the time it’s more in humor than in violence

    My bad

  604. j

    around the horn dp.

  605. Master Shake

How come Wakefield’s strikezone is always twice the size given to the opposing pitcher?

  606. Big Joe

How bout Manny hustling down the line…OMG they need to go ahead and fine him.

  607. JoeT 28 in 09!!

oh man – he’s going to play up the phantom “knee injury” after that one

  608. Psyluk

I think the real story of the game is how Pettitte has managed to pitch 5 gritty innings so far.

  609. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

It wasn’t a bad call by Girardi to try to send A-Rod, but Canò’s strength is not the running game.

The good news is that Nady gets a fresh AB, and he had worked the heck out of the count in his last one.

  610. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Eat that, Manny!

Hampton has inspired me. I’m going to make up an all-injured team. Players must not just be injury prone, but also tend to miss very large chunks of the season.

  611. Jeff NJ

Manny sort almost kinda ran that out. Still a DP. We need to put some more runs up. Starting with Nady who should now be very familiar with Wakefield after that long at bat when Robbie got thrown out. We need to win this game.

  612. CaptainsCorner

“How do these two statements make sense together?

    He was safe.”

It makes sense because even though he was safe that time he is not fast and should not be running. He is too slow to be stealing bases plus whenever he is running he does what Melky does in turning around looking to see if there is a throw and it makes him even slower.

  613. Big Joe

    No Prob Vince thx

  614. DisabledMess

That’s a good point Master Shake. You’re right. I guess they try to give him a break because of the way he pitches.

  615. DFox

Yeah, Pettitte deserves a medal for this one. The called-strike zone is pretty much non-existent.

  616. miggs

Anyone that wants Manny on the Yankees is nuts.

He was basically jogging down to first on that double play. You could see Cano double-clutch after he realized he had all the time in the world to throw him out.

What a bum. I’m so glad he’s not our problem.

  617. SCRANTON

  619. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    X-Man wanted that walk.

  620. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Wakefield wanted no part of Xavier there.

  621. Jeff NJ

Nady is on. Wakefield can’t be tired, he has a bionic arm. Must be tough to manage him, can’t take him out until he blows it.

  622. BBB

There ya go X! Picking up right where he left off :)

  623. Someone Else

I benched Beckett on my fantasy team last night, and Pettitte today. I’m playing Kazmir tonight. I bet he gives up 8 HRs in the 1st, lol.

  624. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Okay I gotta start getting ready to go out for real.

Here is the latest I found on Washburn, from Heyman, who isn’t always right by the way.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/07/26/washburn/?eref=sircrc

Anyway, it certainly would explain why the TBAs are there. They would pitch Washburn against the Sux tomorrow night if we get him, so it seems.

Ponson is obviously still in the mix so that’s good. If the deal doesn’t go through for Washburn, that leper, :) then Ponson gets penciled in for tomorrow night.

Why in hell we would give up Melky for someone like Washburn would make no sense. So I’m not paying any attention to that. If the Yankees consider Gardner’s upside better than Da Melk’s, I no longer trust their scouting.

Enjoy the game all if I don’t talk to you again tonight.

    :(

    GO YANKEES!

  625. Psyluk

    Xavier the 7th?!?!

    Well done.

  626. j

wow that looked like a pop-up,but it almost went out

  627. vinny-b

    thank you, scranton.

have changed my mind. Don’t want him.

  628. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

The Melkman *so* wants to stay in New York.

Actually, it didn’t look all that well hit when he swung at it, but hey, if it works…

  629. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

YANKEE ORGANIZATION: YOU MUST NOT TRADE MELKY!!!!!

  630. Vince Black

Okay we need to trade Melky………..he doesn’t even have enough power to “hit it ova the monsta”

  631. mel

You’re freaking kidding me. Nice hitting Melky. Let’s get ‘em, Jose.

  632. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Why so upset, Jose? It’s not like you were going to get a hit!

  633. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    …They hit Molina?

    1) Molina is tough as nails
    2) He’s the nine hitter.

  634. Wangawa

OK, let’s break this game open, baby!

    Also, please don’t trade Melky.

  635. mel

    Damon’s still got it.

  636. Wolf In Pinstripes

Yikes. Good thing Damon beat that one out.

Now as Pete would say – it’s time to step on their necks.

  637. BBB

    Nice hustle Johnny!

  638. Psyluk

If they’re going to let Wakefield pitch to Damon, who grounded it to second, why not let him pitch to Jeter, who hit a sharp grounder to third last time?

I’m complaining too much :) Let’s hope Jeter puts it over the wall.

  639. will

“TEXAS OUTFIELDER MILTON BRADLEY WAS EJECTED BY HOME PLATE UMPIRE JERRY MEALS IN THE TOP OF THE THIRD INNING FOR ARGUING BALLS AND STRIKES.”

    Not traded

  640. Jeff NJ

Melky is not getting traded, Gardner maybe, Melky absolutely not this year. Now in a year or two if A Jax is ready for the job, then maybe.

  641. Vince Black

maybe we can trade Igawa for Joe Polski……….imagine all the steak knives!!!!!!!!!!!

  642. Yankee Trader

Game not on TV for me. Are they booing Manny, especially after that double play?

Negotiations with Seattle are involving how much money Seattle will contribute to the deal.

In regards to FA or declining arbitration, with respect to Abreu and all FA’s the 1st 15 picks are protected. So if the Royals sign him and have the 7th pick they get to pick 7th and the Yankees get 2 sandwich picks if Abreu is classified a Type A. Correct me if I’m wrong on this. Therefore we might get more valuable pieces if we trade him.

    Where did Molina get hit?

Go Yanks, blow them out this inning.

  643. m4rk6

Eh… They hit Molina? If Molina gets hurt, how many catchers does that leave the Yankees?

  644. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Okay, came up with this:

    C
    1B Nick Johnson
    2B
    3B Eric Chavez
    SS Nomar Garciaparra
    LF Moises Alou
    CF Ken Griffey Jr.
    RF Gary Sheffield
    DH Darren Erstad (Heh)

    SP Carl Pavano
    SP Mike Hampton
    SP Mark Prior
    SP Mark Mulder
    SP Eric Bedard

    CL Kerry Wood
    SU Rudy Seanez

Any suggestions? Sheffield could be replaced, as he’s only been banged up in the last few years.

  645. Psyluk

Trader, I think I heard a smattering of boos when Manny grounded out. And Molina leaned into one :) I think it clipped him on the arm, but it was going 65 mph so it’s ok.

  646. SCRANTON

Off topic, but did anyone see Lenny Dykstra on Mike and The Mad Dog? That guy is messed up.

  647. blackdragon905

reason why pirates rejected first deal, got this from the yesnetwork blogs

“One of the two pitchers the Pirates did not end up with in the six player trade, George Kontos or Phil Coke, was rejected by the Pirates because of damage to the labrum, according to a source with direct knowledge of the transaction. The source would not divulge which pitcher.”

  649. m4rk6

  651. mel

Shiatsu hurts more than HBP by Wakefield. :)

  652. m4rk6

Eh. Gameday sucks, I wish I had live feed.

  653. BBB

Ron, I’d throw Harden into that starting rotation over Bedard. Also, 2b, doesn’t Mark Ellis get hurt a lot, or am I confusing him with Crosby?

  654. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Ron: The all-injured team?

  655. vinny-b

scranton: I viewed it. Why was Lenny talking like that?

  656. m4rk6

Shiatsu hurts more than HBP by Wakefield. :)

  657. Psyluk

If it’s all time, then throw Rocco Baldelli in there.

  658. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    “Ron: The all-injured team?”

Yes. Mike Hampton throwing 80 pitches inspired me.

  659. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Way to clutch, Derek!

  660. blackdragon905

    DEREK!!!!!!!!

  661. mel

    M4rk6,

1st pitch spun Jeter out of the box.

Hit by Jeter, which is a miracle because there’s a LOT of movement on Masterson’s ball.

  662. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

But can Baldelli knock Griffey off that list? I suppose he can play right. I was hoping to have guys at their natural positions.

  663. Skippy

Ron, how about Luis Castillo for 2B? His knees are shot.

  664. Psyluk

Baldelli definitely knocks Griffey off that list. At least Griffey has had a sustained run when he was with Seattle.

    Nice hustle, Manny.

  665. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Good to know that the offense can recover after last night!

  666. Wander

Masterson isn’t doing too well here. He’s got good stuff though, you can tell that much.

  667. kidjock

Perhaps. But Griffey’s got to get some kind of lifetime achievement award.

  671. mel

Masterson will never get suspended. His pitches run off the plate.

  677. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

  678. JoeT 28 in 09!!

surprise surprise…. the home plate umpire wears some thick glasses lol

  679. bench Melky

And by the way, is Melky a player of significance?

  680. SCRANTON

Still need a catcher. And possible some relievers. Baldelli makes the team as a backup.

  702. Psyluk

Pettitte is at 94 pitches. Knowing him, he’ll be out there with the 5 run lead. He can go well over 100.

  703. EvoLuTioN

  706. whozat

“think pettite comes back in? it has been a loooong inning”

It’s true…he’ll WANT to go back in. You have to decide what gives you the best chance of NOT having to go to Mo…the pen, or Andy after 95 pitches and sitting for a half hour.

It’s funny…this is the first time in years I might say “The pen” instead of “are you f@(|

  707. m4rk6

Pettite is at 90+. I’d say that he goes out. The bullpen needs to be rested for tomorrow.
    *shudder* Sir Sidney *shudder*

  708. Wander

Hmmm, I’d wager Pettitte goes one more inning then. He’d be unhappy with himself if he didn’t give the yanks a solid 6 here.

  709. Scorpio

This is a GREAT game so far. Let’s keep it going boys! Ponson tomorrow, yikes…

  710. S.A.- I still believe in this team

    Zing.

It’s ok, Peter Gammons told me he was the greatest setup man in baseball, along with Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen. The Yankee pen, on the other hand, is filled with bums and retreads.

  713. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

  717. EvoLuTioN

that was a nice defensive play….no problem.

    atta boy offense!

  718. Phil - 27 in '08

Unwritten baseball rules…if you hit the team’s star, they hit your star. Or whatever position player you hit, they hit the guy on your team at that position. Because Joba hit Youk, one could surmise that the Big G would get hit. But it would probably be A-Rod, knowing how much Varitek loves him and probably calls the shots, even when not catching.

  719. Pedro

    Caught Bobby sleeping.

  720. JoeT 28 in 09!!

He’s a good broadcaster, though. I think he’d be too restricted on a national telecast (like when he did the ALDS…last year? Maybe?), but I love listening to him on NESN. He’s a bit of a homer, but he tells it like it is most of the time. And he’s hilarious, especially when it’s past his bedtime.

  723. Psyluk

  745. Wander

We still have 4 runs to work with, let’s get this inning over with.

  746. CB

This is an absolutely devastating game for the Red Sox. Its not only the fact that they are in the process of losing game 2 of the series – its how they are doing it.

Boston’s biggest weakness is its bull pen. It has been since the beginning of the season.

The sox just don’t have much pitching depth – great system for position players but thin on pitching.

Justin Masterson is the lynch pin of Boston’s pitching staff strategy for the rest of the year. They are completely depending on him to try stabilize the pen.

This is the second time the yankees have seen him – and it looked like they had his strange motion figured out.

The sox are asking a ton of masterson. If he can’t stabilize their pen then they have no other internal solutions – no one in their minor league system is ready to step in to the majors besides masterson.

The other part of boston’s strategy depends on Clay Bucchholz. They took Masterson out of the rotation because he was needed more in pen. If Bucchholz pitches well in the rotation they can keep Masterson in the pen. But if Bucchholz continues having problems this year then they are in a bind.

The yankees have made their move in getting Marte and Nady. They’re about to get Washburn.

Look for Boston to have to overpay to get Brian Fuentes or possibly Will Ohman. I don’t think the O’s will trade Sherrill in the division. Any way you cut it the Sox are going to need to respond – their pen is just not adequate.

  747. Matt

Pettitte tipped that curveball with the odd finish at the end of the delivery.

  748. S.A.- I still believe in this team

Come on Andy. 2 more outs

  749. Phil - 27 in '08

Girardi probably thought it was too early to lose Giambi’s offense knowing that no lead is safe in the small Fenway. Or he liked Giambi’s numbers against the LHP rather than Sexson’s numbers vs the RHP Francona could bring in.

  750. EvoLuTioN

It’s this type of situation that scares me about Girardi. He leaves these guys in for too long when our bullpen has been great. Pettitte’s thrown over 100 pitches.. he looked like he almost tweaked his back on one pitch. I don’t get why he’s out there still.

  762. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Finishing strong with a strike out.

Could use a couple more Yankee runs for the fun off it, but we’re still in a good position.

  763. S.A.- I still believe in this team

    Nice job Andy

    Back to work bats

  764. BBB

Great job by Andy today. Handled variables (getting squeezed big time early) excellently as always. I was holding my breath when the trainer came out, TG he is ok.

  765. Phil

Andy gives us a quality start!

  767. Yankee Trader

Nick Markakis leads majors with 11 assists, Nady with 10.
Leaders with 2 outs and RISP is Abreu!! 6th is Damon.

    Who’s warming up in bullpen?

  768. Hi Everyone

i’m new and my opinion be that the Yankees are gooder at baseballs then Boston

  769. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

You know, even Robbie’s outs are being hard hit.

  770. sw

Gutsy performance by Andy after a rocky first inning. Hopefully they won’t have to use Mo today after 1 2/3s last night.

  771. Pedro

Cano got robbed. That should have been another hit.

  772. EvoLuTioN

  788. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Ramirez was warming up, last shot I saw of the bullpen.

  789. SCRANTON

That wasn’t Nady’s fault that was a hit and run.

  790. Drive 4-5

“He’s a good broadcaster, though. I think he’d be too restricted on a national telecast (like when he did the ALDS…last year? Maybe?), but I love listening to him on NESN. He’s a bit of a homer, but he tells it like it is most of the time. And he’s hilarious, especially when it’s past his bedtime.”

Couldnt disagree more. I live in Mass and have suffered through Remy a long time. He’s a Scooter wannabe, only Scooter didnt have a mean bone in his body. A Red Sox telecast doesnt go by where Remy doesnt diss an oposing player. He’s the perfect mouthpiece for the “Idiot Nation”.

In April Remy was ragging on Mariano saying that Papelbon has taken Mo’s spot as the premier reliever in baseball. His parting shot at Mo..and I thought at the time the “Remdog” would live to regret it..was “Rivera is just not a strikeout pitcher anymore”. How’s 57 k’s vs 4 walks in 46 innings sound “Remdawg’ you fool? hahahaha

  791. EvoLuTioN

    veras huh

  792. Patrick â„¢

“That wasn’t Nady’s fault that was a hit and run.”

No it wasn’t. That was the Yankees running on a full count to stay out of the double play. They were banking on Melky making some contact. There have been a few baserunning mistakes but that wasn’t one of them.

  793. rconn23

It may not be a must win game, but given that Ponson is on the mound tomorrow it’s one the Yankees gotta get.

This will be a huge test for the bullpen.

  794. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Good spot for Veras. He hasn’t pitched in a few days, has he?

  795. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

phil :) when I was there, I couldn’t believe they still had them.

  801. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Ohhh, that was a Marte sighting – with # 34 on his back.

  802. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

I mean, I know his zone’s small, but don’t walk the midget.

Uh, McCarver, Marte is quite good against righties.

  803. Matt

Talk about a squeeze job. Every pitch that AB was a strike.

  804. Pedro

Veras’ wildness + tight strikezone = scary.

  805. BBB

This HP ump really stinks. In fairness he has made some bad calls on both sides now. He still stinks.

  806. Marte 34

    Well..he does wear 34,Poor Hughes !

  807. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Buck is actively rooting for Boston.

This is a fun spot for Marte.

Good thing there’s a four run lead.

  808. vinny-b

ok. Here comes Marte. Hopefully, it doesn’t blow up.

  809. Yankee Trader

Not Happy that Big Papi is up!!

  810. will

  811. EvoLuTioN

    here comes marte

  812. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Jose, the idea is to throw strikes. That way you get people out ;)

Let’s see how Marte does in a tight spot.

  813. mel

Talk about being put into the fire. Good luck to Marte.

  814. BBB

Veras has not been looking all that great recently. Marte in?

  815. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Veras has lost the zone of late. Probably not a major concern, but this isn’t his first bad outing of late.

  816. EvoLuTioN

our bullpen era is on the line! :D lol

  817. m4rk6

As I recall, Papi had good numbers against Marte. here’s hoping his injury still bothers him.

  818. Wander

Hmm, I think this move is a bit iffy. Using 3 pitchers in 1 inning? I don’t like it.

  819. S.A.- I still believe in this team

Get us out of this Marte

  820. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Hey, a lefty that throws hard. What a concept!

  821. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

I think that Marte was sent to Pittsburg for Yankee Great Enrique Wilson.

    Oops.

  822. JoeT 28 in 09!!

    Hell YES!!!

  824. Vince Black

    Bye bye Papi

  825. tim boat

Marte just did what Myers could never do as a Yankee, get Ortiz out in a big spot.

On another note, I’m still not sold on Veras.

  826. mel

    Worth the trade, right there.

  827. Master Shake

Filthy. All the Marte haters can go pound sand.

  829. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

  830. Wander

Dear god, what a strike out.

  831. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Now what? Edwar for 1.1?

  832. BBB

Meh, I would have left him in.

  833. vinny-b

    should’ve left Marte in.

    Ramirez is not Mo.

  834. jessica(Let's Go Yankees)

    Welcome back, Marte.

  835. Rishi

    Welcome to NY, Marte

  836. Matt

This move is the iffy one. Marte is holding righties to a .200 average this year. Ramirez is much less reliable against righties than lefties. Should just leave him in to face Ramirez. Manny also hits lower against lefties than righties and he could pound him inside with fastballs in the mid 90’s.

  837. kidjock

Great weapon to have. Can’t fault giradi here, cannot let the sox get on a roll, ortiz and manny could make this game close fast.

  838. m4rk6

    … crazy bullpen management :P
But, hey, if it wins us the ballgame, I’m all for it.

  839. americanbear

Great trade! But why pull Marte now? He is still good (probably as good as anyone besides Mo) against righties.

  840. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    NICE…SO VERY NICE ! :-)

  841. CB

    Great job by Marte.

And Girardi is completely over managing right here. Marte is not a guy who can only get lefty hitters out.

For this year righties actually have a lower average against Marte.

Just leave him out there. He’s a very good pitcher who can get outs – lefty or righty.

  842. BBB

and I also would have gone to Robertson here. Hopefully Girardi will prove much smarter than me.

  843. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Guys, just got here. Game is blacked out, of course.

So is the fact that Manny is playing proof that he was faking it or have we covered that already?

  844. Tseng

I don’t want Marte to be a LOOGY.

  845. dont retire 21

    our bullpen is sick

  846. m4rk6

Hey, be thankful that Marte was sent to Pittsburgh, imagine if he was under Torre.
    Dead arm.

  847. will

    30 in a row

  848. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    I don’t know. Manny’s not a garden variety righty.

Edwar for three more outs. And then we see what the lead is.

  849. vinny-b

    still would’ve left Marte in.

  850. Yankee Trader

Ramirez has only one homer against a lefty this year. Afraid to leave Marte in, who held righties to a lower BA than lefties?

  851. Pedro

Sure the result was a good one, but Girardi with yet another questionable decision.

  852. m4rk6

“So is the fact that Manny is playing proof that he was faking it or have we covered that already?”

    Was there ever any doubt?

  853. mel

C’mon guys. He wanted to see Ram vs. Ram

  854. Yankee Trader

    Way to go Edwar!

  855. Don Vito A. Bellamo

another one bites the dust….and another one down, and another one down, and another one bites the dust ! HEY, we’re gonna GET YOU TOO, another one bites the dust ! ( imagine a dancing Yankee fan here ! ) LOL….this is GREAT ! :-)

  856. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

“Sure the result was a good one, but Girardi with yet another questionable decision.”

Good lord, it’s the man’s second year of managing. He’s learning with every game.

  857. m4rk6

Here’s the part where Hansen drills Jeter?

  858. will

It must be fun to have that bullpen. You got so many different awesome alternatives to pick from.

  859. Matt

Ramirez got out of it. Made a few scary pitches but got the job done.

This is what makes Girardi such a better manager than Torre. If Torre is managing, Veras has to finish the inning himself. He’s the 7th inning guy, and that’s his “role.” Girardi saw that he was losing the plate and went to the lefty and then righty to shut down Ortiz and Manny with their main chance of a comeback.

Now he can use guys like Robertson to save Mo after he threw 26 pitches yesterday. Another terrific job managing the pen by Joe.

  860. Bart

This is stupid – marte splits are better against righties – he is not a one out LOGY

  861. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

    “Was there ever any doubt?”

    Just a little. None now.

  862. dont retire 21

i dont mind him pulling marte after getting papi cause like someone said earlier manny is no ordinary righty. as long as marte isnt used only against lefties all season. also maybe joe wants to get him in and out on a good note his first time out there in what will be the biggest spot he will be in.. going after papi.

  863. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Maybe they took into consideration he had a cross country flight last night in using him today (and the fact they might need him for more tomorrow). I can’t imagine if he’s the kind of pitcher he’s said to be they’d waste that kind of talent with being just a LOOGY. Especially if he’s effective against both righties and lefties.

  864. Merman Thunson

welcome back home damaso, sorry bout the enrique wilson thingee… but that’s water under the bridge.
What you just did to Papi remember to do to
the other lethal lefties that stand in our way to #27
    Carlos Pena,
    Jim Thome,
    Josh Hamilton,
    Grady Sizemore,
    Joe Mauer,
    Justin Morneau,
    JD Drew
    and
Curtis Granderson and we’re all good.
    k thanx bye

  865. Someone Else

“This move is the iffy one. Marte is holding righties to a .200 average this year. Ramirez is much less reliable against righties than lefties. Should just leave him in to face Ramirez. Manny also hits lower against lefties than righties and he could pound him inside with fastballs in the mid 90’s.”

I think this is one of the ‘don’t give the new guy a chance to blow the game’ outings.

  866. CB

“I don’t want Marte to be a LOOGY.”

This is the one thing you worry about with the Marte trade.

If Girardi just relegates him to the LOOGY role its a huge waste of Marte. Just a waste.

He’s not a LOOGY – never has been. He’s just a very good pitcher who throws with his left arm.

Quite honestly – he’s a much better pitcher than Farnsworth and I’d rather see him out there as the 8th inning guy. Farnsworth has been terrific so for right now its fine. But after Mo, Marte is the best pitcher in that pen.

I really hope Girardi does not relegate Marte to the LOOGY role.

  867. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Edwar threw 2 pitches, right?

He can pitch the 8th, and then you have your choice for the 9th if you want to stay away from Mo.

  868. Vrsce

It worked, second guessing a successful move is really as lame as it gets.
Freud has a name for it, not to be repeated on this blog.

  869. Vanessa - F4TD

    more from rotoworld on washburn:
SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes Jarrod Washburn could be traded to the Yankees within the next day or so.
Heyman believes the Yankees will take on Washburn’s entire salary and give up just a single minor leaguer in return as a result. The Yankees, though, won’t be willing to extend Washburn beyond 2009 in order to get a trade done. For what it’s worth, the Yankees’ website is currently listing Sunday’s starter as TBA after previously saying it was Sidney Ponson. Sunday is Washburn’s day to pitch.

COME on cano put this thing away

  947. DFox

I’d love to see Cano hit a grand slam here and pose for literally 10 seconds at the plate.

  948. Brian

The Red Sox have gotten away with throwing at the Yanks for years now. It is nice to see guys like Joba and Farnsworth come up and in to even out the score.

  949. MD Mike

    Sex-on is a pinch runner/defensive replacement

  950. will

I want to see youkelis… charge farnsworth. that’d be awesome. Farnsworth would go nuts and beat the crap out of everyone

  951. BBB

lolz. Somewhere Peter Gammons just shed a tear.

  952. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

You know Farnsy will retaliate next inning.

  953. dont retire 21

i love how joba makes his point with youkilis and strikes him out they hit arod and we get a run

  954. S.A.- I still believe in this team

    LOL

  955. Phil - 27 in '08

What’s wrong with you people? They’ve won 7 straight and are on the way to an 8th. We don’t need a brawl with suspensions. Not at all. But the machismo away. Be the better team and walk away knowing you are on a roll.

  956. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Pete are you kidding? that went hear his shoulder, which is near his head.

  957. MD Mike

    Cano is getting jobbed

  958. LCâ„¢

    LOL THATS WHAT YOU GET

  959. JoeT 28 in 09!!

the one day that Hawkins is useful we DFA him… I MISS HAWKINS! only because he would be able to drill someone, get suspended and then DFA him

  960. UtilityMan

    HBPs this game

    Molina

    Nady

    Rodriguez

  961. Khoa

I am praying there aren’t any fisticuffs this weekend. This train’s rolling and the last thing the team needs is for suspensions to derail it.

  962. Phil - 27 in '08

    edit…Put the machismo…

  963. Jeff

    Get a hit please

  964. Tookie

That was pretty close to the head.It isn’t like it was waist or lower back.

  965. Justin

ha come on cano, put these losers to bed

  966. vinny-b

  972. Tom

    MCCARVER, ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Bases loaded, up 4, and he says giambis happy the 3-0 pitch was called a strike cause he now gets a chance to swing with them loaded???

give me a break…of course you’ll take a ball 4 call and get the 5th run

  973. Buzz

CANO FRANsworth should still go in

  974. Bryan

I agree with you Phil. The beanball “war” is over and the Yanks clearly got the better of it since that idiot Hansen loaded them up and walked in a run. I would rather the Yankees choose to sweep tomorrow than start a brawl today.

  975. UtilityMan

Take that Hansen……go back to singing!!

  976. Vrsce

    Crush those pretenders.

  977. PJH

Theres only one way to end this, hit Big Papi in the left wrist. Thanks Red Sockers.

  978. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    yeah, he did Laura.

The trainer came and looked at him, but he didn’t start jawing at anyone or anything. Just took his base.

  979. rconn23

Craig Hansen. Best set up man in the American League.

  980. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Ok, A-Rod is hurting, and Farnsy is coming next inning, now you know someone will be hit.

  981. EdWhitson

Boy, we should have drafted Hansen in 2005!! (SARCASM)

  982. JoeT 28 in 09!!

yeah… Hansen is the best set-up man in the league.. here comes Timlin.. sweet

  983. Justin

please tell me arod isnt hurt
hopefully he isnt because it hit his arm protector

  984. vinny-b

    boston = classy franchise

Manny: keep up the good work.

  985. JetsDaily

    Karma sucks.

  986. FergsKU

Ha, nice job Hanson. BTW, Youkilis should learn something from Alex. He didnt act like a 12 year old getting hit by that pitch.

  987. ronan

    arod hurt

  988. DFox

This team is WAY too classy. They should be at home plate dancing in Hansen’s face after that double. Rub it in a little, have a little fun at more of his expense.

  989. Wander

That intentional hit only drains their bullpen and saves us using Rivera. Thank you Red Sox.

  990. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

    ROBBIE!!!!

  991. Brian

c’mon the two earlier guys HBP were hit with Knuckleballs! They wqeren’t message pitches.

    OTH, Hansen’s was.

Cano continues to layeth the smackdown!

Nice to see Hansen, of LI’s Glen Cove High School fame, serving it up to his hometown team for the enemy!

  992. AsmosEyes

Wow. Cano is officially in Rage Mode, like in The Warriors game for PlayStation2.

  993. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

I just hope Alex is not seriously hurt.

Meanwhile, Robbie, next time you go to the Dominican over the ASB, please bring some of that water back to have in April and May, okay?

  994. BBB

“Take that Hansen……go back to singing!!”

Yeah, he just got mmmm-bopped alright. hahahaha.

  995. E-Dog

“i love how joba makes his point with youkilis and strikes him out they hit arod and we get a run.”

Ah, the irony. But its not good it A-Rod has to sit out a day or two. I just love how the redsux fans cheered when A-Rod got hit. Yokels!

Oh yea, GO ROBBIE! 10-3 baby!

  996. dont retire 21

i hope that doesnt affect arods swing like the ball that hit jeters hand

  997. Scorpio

OMG, they’re calling on Timlin? I guess they are conceding the game.

  998. LCâ„¢

    AGAIN….that’s what you get.

  999. Matt

That’s what you get Boston, for hitting another one of our guys and pretending to be a “victim” in all of this. How fitting. Why would you hit him in a 4 run game to move the finishing runs further up into scoring position? A poor choice of player and time to retaliate, and we get our own form of retribution in the form of WINNING.

1000. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Cano’s OPS is over .700 on the season! The Wilson Betemit Fan Club is throwing a parade! Who’s coming?

  1002. EvoLuTioN

1003. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

They are bringing in Timlin too late. Giambi is already out of the game.

1004. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Nady still has yet to get the ball out of the infield.

  1005. Peter Abraham

YOU CANNOT USE OBSCENE WORDS ON THIS BLOG. Just stop. You can’t use half an obscene word or dashes or whatever. If you are too stupid to express yourself otherwise, close your computer and punch yourself in the head.

Meanwhile, some of you need to get a grip. Molina was hit by a knuckleball and Nady in the foot by a slider. Just relax. Those weren’t intentional.

  1006. vinny-b

did Nady get the ball out the infield today?

  1007. just sayin...

no need for farnsy to hit anybody, this battle is over and we won. sweep tomorrow and c ya later boys!

  1008. Brian

All I can say is, if Farnsy comes in, it is SO on. We’ll see if Girardi does it. He knows all about the wrath of Krazy Kyle from their Cub days I’m sure.

  1013. Scorpio

No more retaliation, just play ball.

  1014. PJH

Pete- You cant even say that he went for the body. 3 inches up and its head ball. Lets remember one thing, Youkilis has never even been hit by Joba.

  1015. EvoLuTioN

    sorry peter

1016. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Ok, Farnsy, continue this and hit them.

1017. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Not sure why Pete wants to continue to believe that Joba threw at Pukelis yesterday on purpose. The people who keep making this claim should be embarrassed by their lack of baseball knowledge. You don’t throw at a guy in a 1-0 game when there are no outs and the team’s best offensive hitters are due up next.

  1018. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

hahaha Pete. That made me laugh. I know its not funny because you’re right, but I can’t believe that people can’t post without having to swear – despite being told repeatedly its not acceptable.

It is a seven run lead in the 8th inning, so probably more precautionary than anything that he’s out.

  1024. Vrsce

The Arod hit was obviously intentional.

Is that not worthy of comment?

  1025. EvoLuTioN

    nasty K on lowell

    Are u freakin serious ;)

1027. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Betemit is in for Alex at third. If Alex is seriously hurt, we better get some payback tomorrow.

  1028. UtilityMan

    Uh Pete

I wasnt impling that they were intentional.
I never said they were… but the History shows that the REDSUX hit the Yankees more…this just adds 3 more to the count.

    OK???

  1029. Justin

I’ll say this about Edwahhhh, he throws strikes at fenway and that to me is really important, even in a 7 run game. The kid is money (fingers crossed)

1030. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Pete I don’t think anyone said they were intentional just pointing out that more Yankees have been hit today than soxs.

  1031. Matt

Is it just me or has Edwar thrown 3 or 4 sliders today? It looked like that was the pitch he K’d Lowell on. If he can throw that to the righties with his plus plus change and above average fastball, he could be tough.

  1032. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

  1036. real lousy chowdah

alex is just getting iced according to rosenthol. Alex is getting ready to go to some strip clubs early tonight

  1038. BBB

Crap, I really hope A-Rod is okay. It didn’t look all that serious when he got hit and Sterling and Waldman did not make much of his coming out. FOX certainly won’t give any updates either, so I guess we gotta wait for the YES postgame. Damn.

  1039. MD Mike

Farnsy is dealing, it would be a waste to lose him to suspension.

A Rod bruises like a peach!

  1042. Matt

  1043. UtilityMan

  1044. MD Mike

  1046. DFox

Why does it matter if the Red Sox hit Yankee hitters intentionally, not intentionally, with knuckleballs, with sliders, etc? Getting hit is getting hit. Like Jeter said, almost getting hit doesn’t hurt. They have to be more careful when facing Yankee hitters, if they are infact not intentional, otherwise next time Joba pitches he should make sure he actually hits one of their players next time.

  1047. EvoLuTioN

    lets go edwar K coco

  1048. Vrsce

No need for Farnsworth or any other yankee pitcher to hit anyone.

Pete Said – “UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: It would not stun me if Hansen drills somebody in this inning.

REMEMBER THIS – NEW YORK (AP) ― New York Yankees pitcher LaTroy Hawkins was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Thursday for intentionally throwing at Baltimore’s Luke Scott.

Hawkins has appealed and the suspension is delayed until a decision is reached. The suspension had been set to begin Thursday, when the Yankees host the Orioles.

In the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, Hawkins threw a pitch over Scott’s head and was ejected without warning by plate umpire Chuck Meriwether. Scott and Hawkins began gesturing at each other, and both benches and bullpens emptied as players spilled onto the field. No punches were thrown.

Earlier in the game, with the Orioles leading 9-0 in the third inning, Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera hit Derek Jeter on the left hand with a pitch.

And This – New York Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth was suspended for three games and fined Saturday for throwing a fastball behind the neck of Boston slugger Manny Ramirez earlier in the week. [link]

    And this -

Major League Baseball handed down its own “Joba Rule” yesterday, slapping Yankees phenom reliever Joba Chamberlain with a two-game suspension and a $1,000 fine.

MLB vice president of on-field operations Bob Watson handed down the suspension a day after Chamberlain was ejected for throwing two pitches over the head of Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis in the ninth inning of Thursday’s 5-0 Yankees victory.

THREE YANKEES SUSPENDED FOR NOT HITTING BATTERS.

Let’s see what happens with Hansen…

After hitting A-Rod up and in, if he’s not suspended it’s a joke.

  1058. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    There we go =)

baseball Guy- Do you expect the Sox to be treated the same as the Yankees? Lowell should be suspended for his act last night but nothing happened. Don’t expect anything to happen except they fine and or suspend Arod for not getting out of the way.. or maybe fining the team for scoring too many runs..

  1077. CM

Pete Abraham – “If you are too stupid to express yourself otherwise, close your computer and punch yourself in the head.”

Pete, I agree with not using obscenity on this blog (after all, we must think of the sensitive nature of the strip club owners who sponsor it), but equating the use of obscenity with lack of intelligence (then following that with a suggestion of self-immolation) has to be the dumbest thing you’ve ever written. I know plenty of highly intelligent people that curse like sailors, and plenty of idiots with a nun’s vocabulary.

Just say that this is a family site and there’s no cussin’ allowed, and spare us from hearing a guy who spends much of his time in Major League clubhouses crying about his virgin ears.

    I like Molina…

  1085. CB

Hansen may have gotten his juvenile retaliation for Joba not hitting anyone but it doesn’t matter – they are winning 10-3 in game 2 of a series.

They are about to pull even with Boston in the standings.

Boston has a major problem – their bull pen is horrible.

Just compare the job the yankees pen did today to what Boston threw out there. The difference could not be bigger.

Before they got Marte the yankees had a huge advantage over the sox in terms of the pen. Now with Marte the relative advantage the yankees have over the sox is enormous in that area. Marte by himself is better than anyone the sox have in the pen besides Papelbon – and the yankees could afford to use him for one out today.

They’ve added Nady and Marte. They are about to add Washburn. They’re winning 10-3 the night after Joba outpitched Beckett 1-0.

They can hit ARod. The yankees have already pummelled them in this series and the sox know it.

  1086. E-Dog

Whats with all the people sitting behind home plate waving to the camera?

  1091. Josh

Edwahhh again? or robertson? not sure if a 7 run lead is farnsworth proof

  1092. Peter Abraham

    1. Nobody is getting suspended. It was an eye for an eye and that will be that. There were no warnings before the game.

    2. I understand fans have blind spots. But Joba was clearly throwing at Youkilis. Or do you thinl it’s a mysterious coincidence that he has thrown at him three times in the last 5 times they have faced each other? Or that Youkilis slid in hard to him at the Stadium?

And that’s fine, guys have beefs all the time. So Hansen hits A-Rod and that’s that. It’s the way baseball works. Nobody got hurt and that’s that.

  1093. Matty

Pete. you’re complaining about “Sweet Caroline”, what about “Rock and Roll Part II”, written by a convicted offender who I can’t explain what he did without being hit by the censor.

But never the less, Gary Glitter is scum.

  1094. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

They can hit ARod. The yankees have already pummelled them in this series and the sox know it.

CB, that’s the quote of the night.

  1095. BBB

Mister DE, it did benefit us, but I just think it is odd that other teams seem to have such a longer disciplinary leash than the Yankees where this stuff is concerned.

In this particular instance though, it ends up going great. Joba goes up and in to Pukeilis, strikeout. MmmBop retaliates, 3 Yankee runs. If there is a double standard, I will take it all day this time around in exchange for the comedy.

Meanwhile all the bandwagoners trying to beat the evening traffic outta Fenway I guess…LOL, what a bunch of pathetic frontrunning excuses for a fan base. These games have been so sweet.

how do you know that? I way have been hit by more than one 95 MPH fastball

Well I would have to think that by saying “He bruises like a peach” you are inferring that maybe he’s not a man, or not tough enough, or I’m not sure what you were trying to say.

And what I was saying is that getting hit by a 95 mph fastball is not a walk in the park. Not for anyone, And I too have been hit numerous times by pitches in the 90 mph range. (not in a while mind you but in my baseball past)

  1101. Dr. J

Can’t waste Giese today, we might need him tomorrow if Ponson bombs.

This is the only problem of having a good pen…. we have to use good reliever even in blowouts because everyone is good lol.

Marvin Miller, FYI, was the head of the MLBPA. He’s basically one of the main reasons (along with former player Curt Flood, whose bio I just read — thanks, Pete!) why the reserve clause was dropped and the semi-feudal control over players by teams was ended.

Just listened to the last few innings in the car. Steve Phillips doing color.

He actually is very competent on the radio. Agreed with practically everything he said. I think the tv cameras do something to his brain. He’s just a different guy on the radio.

He did mention that the Yankees were in the mix for Burnett.

  1108. Scorpio

I love Joba, but I agree with Pete, he’s been gunning for Youkilis. Joba pitched a gem last night and instead of letting that be his mark, alot of the talk today in the media is about the headhunting. Don’t be a Pedro Martinez.

  1109. BBB

Sorry, but the continued insistence that Joba threw intentionally at Pukeilis is high comedy. Why would he give the leadoff man a free pass in the 7th inning of a 1 run game?

Until someone can answer that question legitimately, there is no logical reason to assume Joba was throwing at him.

  1110. Big Joe

Sorry FOX, wrong again. I think Robbie was player of the game.

  1111. Mister Delaware

Pete, if you really think that Joba was throwing at Youkilis in a one run game, you should be really, really worried about him putting himself in front of the team in the future.

  1112. Merman Thunson

    Matty,
If songwriters were to be judged by their immorality then practically none of the great songs ever would be acceptable. The difference here is the subject matter and inspiration of the song Pete was referring to. Gary Glitter wrote a catchy tune that did not contain questionable inspiration.

As posted by a member of the Globe staff at the dirtdogs site:

“No fireworks, but Alex Rodriguez was just drilled by a pitch from Craig Hansen.

The 98 mile per hour fastball (1-0 count) came mighty close to hitting Rodriguez’s head, but he put his hands up to block it, and it hit his left hand. Rodriguez stumbled a few feet away into the infield on the third base side, where manager Joe Girardi and the trainer came out to check him.”

  1116. CB

“while Cashman was making the trade for Marte, was Theo asleep at the wheel?”

I’m honestly not sure what Theo is waiting for.

Again – when you have to deal from a position of weakness you get hammered.

And Theo’s bull pen is so bad I’d guess when he calls up other people for relievers they put him through the ringer.

Bucchholz for Fuentes? How did Dowd actually even say that with a straight face.

Boston is not one reliever away from solving their pen problems. They actually need 2-3 arms from solving the problem.

And in general trading for middle relievers is usually the worst value possible. They nearly always cost a ridiculous amount in talent.

But the talent teams most often want back is young pitching. That’s the commodity in demand.

The sox just don’t have much pitching depth in the minors.

I’d guess that makes it difficult for Theo to make trades.

They have a better system than the yankees do – but they could not pull off a trade like the yankees just did – they don’t have two arms like Ohlendorf and McCutchen they can afford to just trade.

  1117. BBB

Theeeeee Yankees win!!! Absolute pwnage. Tampa Bay looked tougher than Boston last we faced them.

Game. Big props to Jose for getting on base 4 times. Nice hitting up and down the line, esp. the top 4 guys.

    What’s the story with Damon’s leg/foot?

  1119. Raja

No way was Hansen not aiming for A-Rod’s head. A-Rod, 6-3 and all, was up in the air when the ball hit him high on the arm, a couple of inches from his neck. Imagine if he was standing still, it would have drilled him on the neck.

Is Pete watching the same game?

  1120. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

“And doesn’t saying it was on purpose tend to imply that Joba put evening the score with Youkilis before the team winning? Because thats what it seems.”

That is what irks me the most about the whole thing. It’s almost like a personal affront to Joba’s competitiveness, drive, etc. Through all the moves from rotation to bullpen and back, he has never shown himself to be anything but 100% focused on and committed to the team’s success, and nothing else. So I really think all the talking heads need to slow their roll on this one.

1136. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

So the media wants us to believe that Joba is the type of person who puts his hatred of a particular player over his duty to his team? Really? Prove it and then I’ll believe it.

great job overall by the yanks. marte looks good. nice job.

getting washburn wold be great. there is no guy in AAA going to help us. if Hughes and Kennedy couldnt cut it early on, why risk it. Wash is not ace, but he is proven he can win at this level. Thats what you want and its no small feat.

  1145. Nick

    Stuart -

Today’s outing for Veras was just a hiccup. He’s still a valuable setup man.

1146. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

I may be in the minority, but I don’t automatically assume that Ponson is going to get killed tomorrow. I do think that his luck will eventually run out; I’m just not sure that’s happening tomorrow.

    I’m hoping for the best.

  1147. Jorge Tabata

    Seattle wants a prospect?

Fine, let them have their choice of any AAA position player— Lane, Ransom, Green, Broussard etc.

  1148. Jorge Steinbrenner

“So where are all you it’s over, this is a rebuilding season guys now? and you we’re not going to trade for a leftie people? anyone else ready to see the red sox take that buckholz for fuentes deal? because its going to happen after this bullpen performance tonight, thats for sure.”

Typical “either it’s all black or it’s all white” poster here.

I still wouldn’t mortgage the house in order to make the playoffs this season, but a trade like this in which you inherit parts that will either be more than rentals or will bring draft picks at the expense of expendable chips is fine.

We still don’t “need” a lefty. Having Marte is pinstripes for a real run this year, for what we got him for, again, is fine.

I don’t care about what the Red Sox do, who they trade for, who’s in their lineup, etc. I care about what Yankees do.

The team I saw tonight looked like a team running on every cylinder. You have to really like what you saw out there today. Let’s keep it going.

  1149. Confucius

“while Cashman was making the trade for Marte, was Theo asleep at the wheel?”

He was trying his best, no doubt. But only one thing mattered … the Pirates liked Tabata and Ohlendorf. They didn’t like Jed Lowrie, even if Gammons is having an affair with him. Sometimes that’s all that matters, and you get lucky with a good matchup. Next year, a team might have a particular liking for a couple of guys in the Red Sox system and make a trade that looks like a steal for them.

  1150. Marc

Pete, when you see the highlights later, you’ll realize how close Hansen actually came to ARod’s head. That was going right for his head if ARod didn’t stand straight up. It hit him on the top of the shoulder area

Welcome to the ‘glass is half full’ side of the spectrum. It only took you 3 months and 26 days to see the light. :)

  1153. Jorge Steinbrenner

I do hope that Cashman hasn’t gotten so enamored with the idea of having Jarrod Washburn bringing up the rear of the rotation that he’ll say, “eh, what’s one more prospect?” and give in to what sound like last-minute demands.

If we’re going to take $14 million off your books for a back-of-the-rotation guy, you’re taking Kei Igawa and bucket of balls.

I think you keep Rasner and replace Ponson, btw. I realize I’m probably in the minority there, at least on here.

You forget about Hughes and IPK until next year. If this year has reminded us of anything, it’s that: 1) no matter what team it is, the adjustment to the majors is difficult for any young player, and 2) Joba Chamberlain is inhuman.

  1154. stuart

the thing about there pen is they have zero garbage.. Giese is the long man and he has been pitching well since up, My only concern on Giese is he has been used so little becuase the itcher s are doing so well that may be a problem but Sir Sidney may implode Sunday and if he does Girardi needs to yank him quick before things get out of hand

Imagine if they had Wang they would have a really good pitching staff….the pitching staff is mainly home grown; pettitte, mo, robertson, veras, ramirez, wang, joba, and others all were in the Yankee minor leagues for some time.. WOW….

Obviously even Marte was in the yankee minor league a long time ago.. Enrique for Marte another winning trade for the Yanks…

  1155. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

Kennedy almost pitched a no no the other day, if rasner or Ponson implode he gets the first call.

I prefer Rasner over Ponson myself……

If hughes goes thru rehab fine he should be up in Sept…….

I again just do not see the affection for Washbum….Cashman has a gun to there head(seatlle is a total disaster) cash should drive a hard hard bargain else walk…

  1157. whozat

“I think you keep Rasner and replace Ponson, btw. I realize I’m probably in the minority there, at least on here.”

I certainly agree with you. The media all seem to be assuming it’d be Rasner, which is why the majority of comments here seem to compare Wash and Ras, or at least they did initially.

I think it’s clear that Wash should come here to replace Ponson, IF the Yanks don’t have to send anything of consequence back. That would, I believe, make the team better this season…and provide some insurance against Pettitte retiring or Moose getting 2 years from the Phillies, or some other unforeseen circumstance.

  1161. BBB

To clarify, I’ve been on the Washburn bandwagon, I think he is a good fit for us, but I feel the same way about a possible deal that Cash seems to – we’re basically doing them a favor by taking on his contract. So they get nothing of value in return unless they want to take on Igawa.

If they want to play hardball, then wish them luck trying to find someone else to eat Wash’s contract, and hang up the phone.

  1162. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

    Stuart –

I think we can all live with the fact that the long man has not gotten much work – since that tends to happen on winning streaks.

You have fairly pointed out for a long time that the offense was dramatically underperforming – what a difference a hot Robbie Cano makes to remedy that weakness.

Once Nady settles in at LF (I assume Johnny will not get very much time given his pop-gun arm) and we sort out the pen this team looks very good right now.

  1163. YankeeJosh

My take on the Joba-Youkilis thing.

Youkilis dives over the plate much like Jeter does, but is larger and less agile than Jeter so has a hard time getting out of the way of pitches. Youkilis is a very good hitter, and Joba knows he has to pitch inside to get him out and keep him honest. That pitch was very high last night but not that far inside, as it hit Youkilis’ bat and was a foul ball. That’s why you keep seeing things between Joba and Youkilis imo.

Also, Hansen definitely should be suspended 2 or 3 games for that. Varitek basically said that they’d do something today, and that was obviously up and in intentionally. If Varitek had shut up yesterday, then you could argue it wasn’t retaliation and wasn’t on purpose, but since Varitek opened the can of worms, MLB should have no chice but to suspend Hansen. If they don’t, it’s extremely hypocritical.

  1164. john habyan

trading anything of value for washburn is a big mistake. the yanks have guys that can fill the void at the same level and they wouldnt have to given anything up.

  1165. Phil

    I can’t believe the 6:47 update here.

Youkilis never got hit and I see Hansen being congratulated for hitting Alex? What a load of crap.

  1166. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

    YankeeJosh -

Great post – I think you are right that everyone gets caught up in the history of Joba and Youk to the point where – if last night’s pitch was the first incident and not the 4th – it would have just been a typical dusting.

The actual pitch was off the plate by 3″-4″ as far as I could tell. Youk dove in and got dusted. boo-&%$&^ -hoo. (resisting urge to use profanity).

Finally we have a stud pitcher who will get in the other team’s head. Pedro and Beckett can’t use our squad as pinatas anymore. IT IS GREAT! :)

  1167. mel

Haven’t heard much about the HOF induction. What time is it going to be and who will go from the Yankee organization?

  1168. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Kennedy almost pitched a no no the other day, if rasner or Ponson implode he gets the first call.

I prefer Rasner over Ponson myself……”

Let’s let IPK continue to get his work in AAA. He never really got the time there. Hopefully, it’ll be him and Phil competing for #5 next year.

I absolutely prefer Rasner. We know what we’ve got in him, and he’s pretty damn gutsy. With Ponson, you wait and wait for the glass slipper to fall off. I mean, it HAS to, right?

  1169. mel

Alex doesn’t care, we just whipped Boston’s butt.

  1170. YankeeJosh

Derek Jeter put it best when he said “Close doesn’t hurt” or something to that effect.

The Red Sox were able to turn the 2004 ALCS around by pitching inside to Yankee hitters, especially Matsui. They should realize that’s all Joba was doing last night.

  1171. will

washburn is overhyped.. the guy has a 4 and a half era… 4.5+!

  1172. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

Apparently when someone is as much of a delicate flower as Youk, a near miss forces you to complain to the nearest umpire for about 5 minutes.

I mean, if he got hit by a pitch, it might ruin his good looks – lol

  1173. Jorge Tabata

Have there been any quotes or video interviews from Nady and Marte with their reaction to being traded here?

” Nobody got hurt and that’s that. “….OK, so it does not hurt to get hit with a pitched ball ? That is insane ! Youk got his pride hurt, when a ball sailed up and in on him and hit his bat for a strike….THAT did not hurt. A-Rod took a fast ball off his arm. If you think THAT didn’t hurt, you need to layoff the sauce. It is only over because it is the Yankees. Yankee pitchers are suspended regularly over someone’s PERCEPTION that the ball was intentionally thrown at a batter BUT DID NOT FIND ITS TARGET. Yankees are then ACTUALLY HIT and the same INTENT is INFERRED…but again, and follow me here, if you can…THE YANKEE is acually HIT with the ball and sometimes injured and taken and THAT IS an EVEN thing ? BULL COOKIES !

1185. TKinDC (RC index is .270 and rising)

    Interesting from boston.com:

“Before the game, in his pregame press session, manager Terry Francona talked about the current situation with Manny Ramirez. Francona said that Ramirez had come to him last night, and told him that he would be able to play today.

“We obviously had some conversations last night,” Francona said. “One thing leads to another. We just wanted to talk through some things and make sure we were all on the same page, like we do with everybody. Some of that was last night.”

Typical “either it’s all black or it’s all white” poster here.

What does that even mean? If its that the black is the fact that people have been going nuts all year about this being a rebuilding season, and the white is that now everyone has shutup, then yes, i am a black and white poster. People who count the Yankees out before the all-star break make me laugh. I guess last year didn’t teach anyone anything. It’s just sad when its people who claim to be “yankee fans”.

  1192. Tomer

NYYFANS is still down so I will say everything here. The Yankees have had a great weekend so far aquiring Marte and Nady whileclosing in on the Sox. Tommorow is a toss-up with Ponson going but the offense has been magically good for him.
