Game 103: Yankees at Red Sox

July
26

YANKEES (57-45)
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Nady LF
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Pettitte LHP

RED SOX (60-44)
Pedroia 2B
Youkilis 1B
Ortiz DH
Ramirez LF
Lowell 3B
Drew RF
Lowrie SS
Crisp CF
Cash C
Wakefield RHP

Andy Pettitte (11-7, 3.86) vs. the Boston hitters.

Tim Wakefield (6-7, 3.69) vs. the New York hitters.

Just for kicks, here is Damaso Marte vs. the Boston hitters.

Notes: Sorry for the delay, they were waiting on Nady to arrive. … Nady is 0 for 1 in his career against Wakefield. …The Yankees have won seven straight and 12 of 15. … The Yankees have allowed only 13 earned runs in 66 innings since the break while striking out 73. Their team ERA is down to a season low 3.94. … Bobby Abreu has a 10 game hitting streak at Fenway Park (14 of 41, six doubles). … The Yankees are 22 of 71 (.310) with RISP since the break.

Back later with updates.

UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Brett Gardner was optioned to Scranton. LaTroy Hawkins was DFA’d. Also, Kei Igawa had cleared waivers and was taken off the 40-man. So they’re at 39 now. Plenty of room for Jarrod Washburn.

UPDATE, 2:55 p.m.: Here’s how the deal went down. Cashman has been trying to get Marte for a while. When the Pirates mentioned how much they liked Tabata, the deal expanded. Pittsburgh had to have Tabata and Ohlendorf.

Then the second tier of the deal became McCutchen or Coke. The Pirates had their choice. The third segment of the deal was a choice of Karstens or Kontos.

* * * BREAKING NEWS: Yankees close on Washburn * * *

Waiting to find out details, but it sounds like the Yankees may have traded for Jarrod Washburn. Or are at least close to that. More to come.

UPDATE, 3:12 p.m.: Hmm, maybe not. Says Brian Cashman, “I have no irons in the fire. I’m cold.”

Of course that could change in a second.

UPDATE, 4:09 p.m.: Here is Brian Cashman taking about the Pirates trade:

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: A few points about the trade:

* Cashman said he would not have surrended what he did for two rentals. Having Nady and Marte under their control was important.

* This will enable the Jorge Posada to have his shoulder surgery now and be ready for 2009. Cashman and Girardi said that will be discussed. But now that Nady is here and Damon is nearly healthy, there is no sense in delaying Posada’s surgery.

* Cashman said that Austin Jackson had passed Tabata in terms of being the best position player prospect in the organization.

* Dealing the prospects opens up space in terms of who they can protect in the Rule 5 Draft.

UPDATE, 4:31 p.m.: Brutal outing for Andy Pettitte so far. He is closing in on 50 pitches in the second inning and is down 2-0 thanks to an error by Alex Rodriguez.

With Sidney Ponson going against Jon Lester tomorrow, this is a game the Yankees need to get.

UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Marte has No. 34 and Nady No. 29.

UPDATE, 4:46 p.m.: I know I keep bringing this up. But what is up with Bobby Meacham? The Red Sox were giving that run up when Manny threw to second and he held Abreu. It should be 2-2.

UPDATE, 5:00 p.m.: Robbie Cano is now an insane 17 of 33 since the break. He hit that ball a long way.

UPDATE, 5:30 p.m.: At what point do you suppose the Yankees will figure out that Cano can’t steal bases? He is 1 for 5 this season and 11 of 25 for his career. Here’s a crazy thought: Stop having him run.

TRADE UPDATE, 5:41 p.m.: Jarrod Washburn might not be a Yankee today, but it could happen as early as tomorrow. The Yankees appear willing to absorb the $14 million he has left on his deal in return for not sending Seattle any player of significance. No, not Kei Igawa

Washburn will either waive his no-trade right or get compensated by Seattle in some way.

It’s a lot of money, but Washburn would be an upgrade on Ponson or Rasner. Having him around also would cushion the blow if Andy Pettitte and/or Mike Mussina retires after this season or go elsewhere.

UPDATE, 5:57 p.m.: There seems to be no stopping the Yankees. four hits and four runs in this inning (so far) and it’s 7-2. Meanwhile Brian Cashman is burning up his cell phone.

You have to like a weekend of roster improvements and getting tied with the Red Sox in the loss column. With all the road games the Yankees have left, any win on the road is huge.

The Hub is going to be Panic City if this lead holds up.

UPDATE, 6:00 p.m.: More brilliant base-running by the Yankees. But it should not matter.

It would be big if the Yankees can avoid using Mariano Rivera.

UPDATE, 6:06 p.m.: Assistant trainer Steve Donohue just visited Pettitte on the mound. He just threw an 87-mph fastball, so apparently he is OK.

UPDATE, 6:09 p.m.: All things considered, a solid six innings out of Andy Pettitte. He’s over 100, so that may have been it for him. Veras is warming up.

UPDATE, 6:26 p.m.: Right into the fire goes Damaso Marte, two on, one out and Big Papi up.

UPDATE, 6:29 p.m.: And he strikes out Ortiz on four pitches. Brian Cashman is a genius.

UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: Look at Girardi, getting all Tony LaRussa on us. Three relievers in one inning.

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: It would not stun me if Hansen drills somebody in this inning.

UPDATE, 6:47 p.m.: That was pretty obvious in its intent. But the Yankees had something coming their way after Joba threw at Youkilis last night. Now it’s over unless the Yankees decide to continue it.

I’ll say this for Hansen, at least he threw at A-Rod’s body and not his head.

UPDATE, 7:01 p.m.: I’ve never understood the Sweet Caroline thing. It’s a creepy song. Neil Diamond admitted he wrote about it about Caroline Kennedy when she was 13. So, hey, let’s everybody sing!

  1. Bronx Jeers

    Nady era begins!

  2. Phil

What else did we send to Seattle besides Igawa?

  3. Tint

Nady should be good for 2 HR’s and a web gem today.

    Lets go Yankeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!

  4. mko

What else did we send to Seattle besides Igawa?

The trade has not been finalized, it’s not even a sure thing yet.

  5. Jorge Tabata

I don’t think anything Phil… atleast I would hope not.

Even Coke and Kontos are too much for Washburn.

If they insist on another player, they can have Jason Lane or someone.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Pete, come on now, you know you want to tell us that Hawkins was DFA’d (good guy not withstanding)….

  7. Tank

    why is nyyfans.com down?

  8. Phil

I think they are at 38 on the 40 since 4 spots have opened and only Marte and Nady have arrived.

  9. mko

    why is nyyfans.com down?

    It’s not.

  10. JR Yankees

Wow, Nady already in th lineup. What number will he be wearing tonight?

Marte will probably take the vacant #21 in honor of Clemente.

Good luck to both of these guys as they are thrown into a snake pit in their first game as Yankees.

More importantly, let the good times roll on…Go Yankees!

  11. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Ok, Nady is in the lineup. I feel bad for Brett. But Hawkins had to go. Maybe its Hawkins for Washburn, if Hawkins clears.

  12. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

No way Kei passed through waivers!! How the heck did that happen? He is a lefty!

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Phil: I don’t think McCutcheon was on the 40 man?

  14. Anthony

    LETS GO YANKEEEEEEEEEES

  15. mel

What’s the difference between ML & MiL for Igawa in regards to a Mariners trade?

What’s the latest? It sounds like a salary dump now and the Yankees are dealing from the position of strength.

Do you insist they take Igawa and forego any Washburn salary contribution from Seattle? If you’re Seattle and have to pay part of Washburn’s salary, do you take back Igawa instead?

  16. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I think they wanted Brett to play more, and get his hitting back on track.

  17. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

I think we’re stuck with Igawalbatross - They wouldn’t have bothered putting him through waivers if he was going to Seattle.

Or I could be completely wrong :)

  18. Fredo Corleone

Igawa won’t be in the Washburn deal. They won’t take him.

  19. ZaWheelZ

Just heard Buster Olney on the Gordon Damer show report the yanks will be acquiring Washburn Monday or Tuesday. Don’t want to interfere with the HOF induction tomorrow.

  20. mel

    JR,

You’re freaking kidding about #21, right?

  21. NYMetsGrrl94

Nady will most likely be able to wear #22. He has worn it his entire career except for a few days at the beginning of his Pirates tenure. And with Hawkins gone it is open.

Be good to Xavier. He is one of my favorites.

  22. Phil

Rebecca, Ohlendorf and Karstens were on the 40.

  23. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Okay we cleared Hawk and Jeff off the 40 man cause of the trade. and than Kei because NO team wanted him. I still can’t believe it!! ;)

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Marte can take 21 all he wants. It’s on the fans if they boo him.

  25. Fredo Corleone

“I think they wanted Brett to play more, and get his hitting back on track.”

That and he’s not good enough to hit at the MLB level.

  26. Dman

now that hawkins got dfa’d is nady’s still have #22

  27. mko

HIS NAME IS DAN MCCUTCHEN and not McCutcheon. Enough already…

  28. mel

It’s a good thing Gardner’s going back so he can play full time.

At least he got a taste of what it’s like and had some success (perfect on the base pads while knocking in some guys.) Beat Papelbon, too!

If he wants to get back up, he’ll work all the harder on his hitting.

    Thanks for filling in, Brett.

  29. Bronx Jeers

According to those #’s, the Sox shouldn’t be so scared of Marte. Papi took him deep…. so did Coco.

    Damaso Myers?

  30. Global Warming

Cano actually bats in front a quality bat! It’s about time.

We will see Gardner again in September and October.

  31. Someone Else

“UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: Brett Gardner was optioned to Scranton. LaTroy Hawkins was DFA’d. Also, Kei Igawa had cleared waivers and was taken off the 40-man. So they’re at 39 now. Plenty of room for Jarrod Washburn.”

Excellent news. Gardner needs AAA at bats; Christian satisfies the pinch runner/spot starter role. Gardner will be back up before September 1st to be a postseason pinch runner/defensive replacement (Nady to RF, Gardner to LF).

No one was willing to take Igawa for his salary. Too bad.

I don’t care about Washburn, to tell the truth. I don’t want him in 2009, period.

  32. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

“HIS NAME IS DAN MCCUTCHEN and not McCutcheon. Enough already…”

    good point miko ;)

  33. Someone Else

And I much prefer keeping Giese as the long man. I wish Hawkins luck elsewhere, but he lost his job.

  34. will

Marte i read has very shaky makeup one of the reasons the yankees traded him to begin with. I dunno if he’s matured overall or can handle the big show of NYC now.. We’ll find out soon.

  35. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Someone else, maybe you havent heard of the trade made 1 year and a half ago, whe we got Abreu.

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Sorry, I failed spelling.

    No, seriously, I totally did.

And I wouldn’t worry too much about the Sox numbers against Marte–they’ve also hit Rivera pretty well, too.

  37. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    Pete -

What’s up with TBA for tomorrow’s game?????

  38. mel

LOL@ Francona. “Some misunderstandings this week and doesn’t want to get into the details.”

A normal person would clear up the misunderstanding before crawling into an MRI tube.

  39. Someone Else

“Someone else, maybe you havent heard of the trade made 1 year and a half ago, whe we got Abreu.”

    Huh?

  40. Cody

Pettitte is a “LHP”, Peter. Yes, I know it was just a mistake.

  41. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Why would you leave out Abreu, when you said Nady to RF, Gardner to LF?

  42. Dennis

Pirates took Karstens instead of Kontos wow thanks for that.

  43. Matt

Good moves Yanks. Adios Hawkins! I figured hed be gone by August 1st.

  44. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Igawa and LaTroy for Washburn? LOL

  45. Desi Yankee

The numbers of Damasu marte against Bostons Lefties are UGLY.

  46. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    From Pete:

    * * * * * * * * BREAKING NEWS: Yankees close on Washburn * * * * * * ** *

Waiting to find out details but it sounds like the Yankees may have traded for Jarrod Washburn. More to come.

  47. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Dennis yeah I’m shocked that they took Jeff.

  48. Someone Else

Anyone watching this Yankees’ Classics game? Love the Melky play.

  49. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Rubin, if that happens I’ll be Dancing in the Street.

  50. Someone Else

    Well, Washburn on his way.

Only other deal I see possibly being made is a catcher or a better starter. Neither are likely, though.

  51. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

Jennifer, why would you be? They wanted more than 1 guy of immediate help for the rotation.

  52. Phil

Benji Molina could be the catcher.

  53. Someone Else

“Why would you leave out Abreu, when you said Nady to RF, Gardner to LF?”

Abreu stinks defensively. I was talking about late inning defensive replacement.

  54. PittsburghYankeeFan

Manny to the Yankees! That’s where he wants to go. Chatting it up with ARod, is he? Not at the deadline (maybe to the Mets or Phils), maybe next year? Could we deal with it?

The Mariners owners are Japanese. Igawa is going to the Mariners for Washburn, and he will start for them. It is a dishonor to be in AAA and clear waivers like he has, and Japanese players just lost a bit of face.

  55. Matt

Loving these moves, good job Cash.

  56. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

It would be great for Jose Molina if his brother came in also, IMO

  57. mko

Benji Molina could be the catcher.

Don’t think the Giants are gonna give Bengie up!

  58. SJ44

I guess Cash wants to get all the business out of the way so he can enjoy himself tomorrow in Cooperstown for Goose’s induction ceremony. lol

  59. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    rubin- um Igawa stinks.

  60. dontfirecash

I really don’t want to see Washburn on the Yanks in 2009, espcecially if he is costing $10 million. Wouldn’t Ian Kennedy be a better option than Washburn?

  61. Fran

If the trade for Washburn is complete maybe he starts tomorrow night. Does anyone know when Washburn last pitched?

  62. Dennis

    Rubin

I think we r surprised because Kontos actually has a ceiling while Karstens just plain sucks.

  63. Tank

We need to find a way to get Manny.

    Maybe a 3-team deal.

  64. SJ44

Manny will never be a Yankee. Won’t happen under any circumstances.

  65. S.A.- I still believe in this team

    Let’s go Yanks.

  66. Rubin-Melky, Gardner and Hughes stayed!

I was talking about the Pirates, Ohlendorf and Jeff will help them immediately.

If Ohlendorf develops his pitches more and maybe learn another one, he’ll project better that an 5 starter, thats what the Pirates plan to do with him, it looks like.

  67. Matt

Washburn was scheduled to pitch for Mariners tomorrow. Makes sense, slot him right in there!

  68. EricVA

    Fran,

Washburn was scheduled to pitch for Seattle tomorrow.

  69. Daveo

How does Cashman figure Washburn is any better than Ponson or Rasner?

  70. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

All right guys, given all the trade deadlines since 1998, where does this one rank on your radar?

On mine it’s easily 1 or 2, barring utter disaster.

  71. Matt

And Seattle is at Toronto, not far from Boston, he could be with the Yankees in a few hours

  72. Dennis

Karstens will not help them thats my argument he is just straight awful now and in the future. why would u not take a guy that can be good in 2 years VS a guy who sucks now and forever.

  73. Patrick ™

“Manny will never be a Yankee. Won’t happen under any circumstances.”

Any reason you say that? I could definitely see him being a Yankee as soon as next year. If the Sox decline his option and he becomes an FA I think the Yanks would LOVE to grab him and make him the full time DH.

  74. Fredo Corleone

“We need to find a way to get Manny.”

Why would you want him? He’s a pain in the ass who will quit on you when thigs aren’t going his way.

  75. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Jarrod’s numbers vs Boston

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/bvsp?playerId=3834&teamId=2

  76. mko

Karstens will not help them thats my argument he is just straight awful now and in the future

What are you talking about? He was injured a lot of the time, he wasn’t that bad when he pitched in the Majors and he was very good in AAA this year. He’s still young, he has gotten better since the last time he saw the Majors, he had a shot to make the team this year…he’s alright.

  77. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Cash always lies about stuff like this.

  78. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

“We need to find a way to get Manny.

    Maybe a 3-team deal.”

Tank not on my watch! I can see it now. Manny urinating in the new Yankee Stadium outfield. Manny announcing to Girardi that he isn’t going to be playing. Manny dropping a ball in the outfield and standing there grinning while the winning run crosses the plate. And the one that never bothered me but would NEVER play in the Bronx: Manny styling after hitting a homer.

Manny is NOT suited for pinstripes in my opinion!

  79. Cheesyhoboe

Uh, remember yesterday when Cashman was asked about trades and he said he was “making calls here and there”, and then a couple hours later we had Nady and Marte?

  80. mel

    dontfirecash,

Theoretically, yes, IPK would be better. But Yankees already got burned by depending on young starters. Kennedy, and, to a lesser extent, Hughes have to earn their way back. They need to develop at the proper pace and pressure got to both of them.

    Imagine this:

    CC
    Wang
    Joba
    Pettitte
    Moose
(Where’s Washburn you ask? Who cares, you got CC!)

    or:

    Wang
    Joba
    Pettitte
    Moose
    Washburn/Hughes

You can never have too much legit starting pitching. Ask the Sox when they let Arroyo go. Ask the Yankees when the 2 rooks didn’t work out and Wang went down.

At the very least, Washburn can be our innings eater. :)

  81. PittsburghYankeeFan

    SJ44

Why would Manny never be a Yankee, by the way (and I happen to agree with you, as I post to irritate any Boston trolls)?

He grew up 8 blocks from YS, didn’t he?

  82. SJ44

The Yankees have no interest in Manny.

They don’t want him to DH. Matsui will be the DH next year.

They don’t want to deal with Manny, his posse, his moods, Boras, none of it.

Brandon will tell you better than I but, one of the reasons Manny likes not playing in NY is to not have to deal with his former homies in Washington Heights.

He would have to deal with that if he came to the Yankees.

It won’t ever happen. From the Steinbrenners on down, they want no part of Manny Ramirez.

If Omar wants to take that one, good luck to him.

  83. Fredo Corleone

    “Jarrod’s numbers vs Boston”

    Ugh!

Not shocking though. Good teams tend to thrash bad pitchers

  84. Dennis

being very good in AAA means nothing. do the names Igawa, Clippard mean anything to you. These guys and Karstens are AAAA pitchers nothing more. and i will bet anything Karstens will have a 5 ERA in the NL at best.

  85. dave

wait is there confirmation on washburn? someone have a link.

  86. Cheesyhoboe

Kennedy doesn’t really need any more time in the minors. He pitched a one-hitter in his last start and three-hitter before that. More importantly, his pitching coach said he had a mechanical flaw corrected which was affecting his control.

  87. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

SJ: not to mention, the fans would never welcome him.

  88. SJ44

Washburn is a better pitcher than both Ponson and Rasner. He’s a decent back end of the rotation guy for a contending team.

Good cutter, works quickly, and has the ability to pitch well in big games.

For the prices on the market, getting him is a smart move. Its just money and the Yankees have plenty of that.

  89. Enoch44

Washburn is a horrible pitcher and a horrible idea. I’m going to have faith that Cashman’s not going to do this.

He’d get shelled in fenway tomorrow.

  90. JR Yankees

    Mel:

Just got back to my computer…I didn’t mean to put a scare to all the O’neil lovers. That was unfair of me.

However, I have no clue which number he will wear. I guess it’s possible.

  91. PittsburghYankeeFan

    SJ 44

All good points. I never thought about the reverse with the Washington Heights homies.

It would be insanity, but the thought of Manny and ARod hitting 3-4 or 4-3 in the same line up is kind of interesting.

With Nady on the roster and Ajax coming up in 1-2 years, Abreu’s salary is gone, and to upgrade to Manny would only take another 4-5 million.

The concept is intriguing, although the reality would likely be ugly.

  92. crawdaddie

I think the Mariners are trying to holdup the Yankees on Washburn which is why that trade hasn’t gone down.

  93. SJ44

The Yankees play more teams than just the Red Sox.

Just looking at raw numbers and drawing conclusions isn’t the proper way to view statistics.

He’s a veteran pitcher who, over the course his career, keeps his team in most of his starts over 5+ innings.

Doesn’t go deep into games but, he does know how to pitch and work his way around lineups.

He’s not going to win a Cy Young but, he’s also not going to embarrass you either.

For the Yankees current needs, he’s an upgrade to what they have right now.

  94. cano he didnt

i say try IPK again, now that his “mechanical” error is fixed all hes gotta do is learn to not nibble in the bigs and hopefully hughes will be ready for next year as i see him being much better than IPK, no need for washburn, weve already got a couple mediocre starters.

  95. mel

    Rebecca,

Gotta disagree on the fans. As long as Manny hits HR they will embrace him. He’s never been hated like Papi, Schilling, Paps, Beckett.

And as stupid and crazy as Manny is, he’s got charisma. The fans tolerate A-rod because he’s the best player in the game, but they don’t LOVE him. They don’t really like him off the field. They would love Manny and his manic energy.

  96. Patrick ™

“Washburn is a better pitcher than both Ponson and Rasner. He’s a decent back end of the rotation guy for a contending team.”

No doubt SJ, he’ll be a good pickup if Cashman decides to pull the trigger. I’m just hoping they don’t give away anyone too valuable. I’ve heard the Mariners are asking about Gardner and Melky. Gardner maybe but theres no way we can trade Melky for Jarrod freaking Washburn.

  97. dontfirecash

In 5 of his last 6 seasons pitching(including 2008) Jarod Washburn has had an ERA+ of 100 or less.

  98. cano he didnt

not sure what to think of manny on the yanks, but weve made other players with attitudes straight so who knows if manny can change. but having him bat next to arod does have a decent ring to it

  99. SJ44

Gotta look at the long view of Manny. His OPS is down significantly the past two years.

He isn’t the same hitter he was in the past.

Sure, he has hot streaks but, the consistency hasn’t been there over the better part of the last two regular seasons.

He was great in the post-season last year.

But, taking in his age, all of the “Manny being Manny” stuff, and everything else, do you really think he fits what the Yankees do? Of course not.

Its why they won’t touch him. They will gladly sit back and let Boras pawn him off on somebody else. Hopefully, the Mets.

  100. TGFizeek

Do we still need Sabathia? I know it sounds crazy but with Wang
    Petitte
    Joba
    Moose
    Washburn/Hughes/IPK/Rasner
AND some of the farmhands we have today the rotation looks crowded.
I personally think this rotation plus CC in FA means lotsa title for years to come, but would love to hear the consensus on this.

  101. Gus

I love Paul O’neil as much as anybody but damn who cares about a stupid number!!!!!!!!!!!!!If Marte gets 21 and the boo the dude for it I think that is the lamest thing ever. Honestly just because somebody else wears 21 does not mean the team or the player are disrespecting Mr.O’Neil. I think he was a great Yank but not on the 2,6,42,51 level

  102. SJ44

They aren’t trading anybody of value for Washburn Patrick.

Its strictly a salary dump. Meaning, if the Yankees take on the money, they don’t give up significant assets in return.

They aren’t trading Melky for Jarrod Washburn. Not happening.

  103. PittsburghYankeeFan

So Boston does not pick up his option next year. Where does Manny go?

Who has the cash and the patience to put up with his idiocy?

    (1) mets
    (2) yankees
    (3) cubs (ha,ha–could you just see Lou and Manny)

    I’m not sure anyone else.

  104. PJH

Id rather see what an Aceves or IPK can give us instead of locking in Washburn for millions next year.

  105. Cheesyhoboe

Moose and Pettitte are gone after this season unless we resign them.

  106. mel

    Cheesyhoboe,

One or both will want to pitch in the New Stadium.

But getting Washburn will help if they decide not to.

  107. Patrick ™

“They aren’t trading anybody of value for Washburn Patrick.

Its strictly a salary dump. Meaning, if the Yankees take on the money, they don’t give up significant assets in return.

They aren’t trading Melky for Jarrod Washburn. Not happening.”

I’m hoping you are right. In that case it would be a slam dunk move for Cashman. However I hope Seattle doesn’t saddle us with Vidro’s contract, he is absolutely worthless at this point and he would steal a roster spot from someone that could actually help the team.

The thing is, Seattle isn’t a poor team, they can handle Washburn’s contract. Thats why I’m thinking they might demand that we take Vidro or they might demand a better prospect. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

  108. Gus

    Dear TGF,

I say we go for CC give him a 5 year deal even if by year 5 worst case year 4 he will be grossly overpaid. The team makes so much profit already plus they will sell out 81 games next season not to mention the numrous strings of revenue they will have in 09

  109. JR Yankees

    Thanks Gus:

And again, I don’t want to reopen that can of worms like when Hawkins chose #21 and a lot of people freaked out. I should have wrote (/sarcasm) after my post.

However, for the sake of my opinion, no matter what number he chooses, he’ll probably want the number he’s been wearing (I hear 43 which is Rasner’s) anyway. Whichever it happens to be anybody that boos him would be ridiculous just like last time.

  110. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Honestly, it’s hard to see Manny going anywhere other than Boston…but he’s worn out his welcome.

  111. Steve

Washburn had two awful starts this year when he gave up 7 runs and 9 runs. Taking those two starts out his ERA is 3.37 in 112.2 innings. Over the month he has a 2.97 era and 1.23 whip in 33.1 innings. Thats better than Ponson and Rasner.

  112. PJH

If Wang makes september return, we could go deep in the playoffs. Even with a 3 of Moose Andy and Joba, we could make serious run at the World series

  113. Vanessa

Cash is brilliant. The Yanks have already stole Nady and Marte. The team already looks more threatening.
    http://flairforthedramatic.mlblogs.com

  114. justin

I don’t want washburn on this team. Sir sidney is just fine. We don’t need a chipmunk as our 5th starter

  115. SJ44

Seattle isn’t in position to demand anything. They are trying to dump salary because they want to blow up that team and the team may be in the market.

The Yankees will walk away before taking on a contract or player they don’t want.

They aren’t in the situation where they have to go that route. Especially after yesterday’s trade.

Barring unforeseen developments (like Washburn refusing to waive his no trade to come to NY), I expect them to do the Washburn deal in the next couple of days.

  116. Guiseppe Franco

For the prices on the market, getting him is a smart move. Its just money and the Yankees have plenty of that.

It would be a smart move if they only had Washburn for the rest of the season.

But they would be guaranteeing him a spot in the rotation for next year too. If he doesn’t pan out for one reason or another, he’s dead weight on the roster and blocking someone from the minors who could help the team.

And teams don’t usually DFA players making $10M+. Look at Hawkins. He was horrible all season and only made $3.5M. Yet he was still on the active roster for the first 102 games.

I don’t like this move at all.

  117. SJ44

Team may be **on** the market. As in, for sale.

We need an edit button! lol

  118. Anthony

SJ44 what do you think about nady/marte joining the yanks

  119. dontfirecash

I agree that Washburn is better than Ponson and Rasner. I just don’t think he is worth $14 million or whatever he is owed the next 1.5 years.

  120. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    Hey Craw! How’s it going?!

Well I turned on Baseball Today (or whatever is before the FOX Game) just in time for all of the heads over there to talk about what a great trade this was for the Yankees (totally agree) and how the Yankees stole those players (don’t agree).

If we have kids that can help Pittsburgh rebuilt, then we stole nothing. We both took care of our needs.

About Washburn? Not convinced, don’t think he’s better than Ponson certainly and we got Ponson for a song. Don’t want him.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. If the Yankees pick him up then of course I cheer for him. But for the record, I don’t want him and don’t think we need him.

But I am loving Nady and Marte!

  121. dontfirecash

5 out of the last 6 years, Washburn has been a below league average pitcher. For what he makes, that is a ripoff.

  122. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

“I don’t want washburn on this team. Sir sidney is just fine. We don’t need a chipmunk as our 5th starter”

    :D

Don’t know about the chipmunk part but agree with the rest. Sir Sidney is more than alright with me!

  123. mel

Jeannie just put Rosenthal on the spot about Mark Grace and he shut down Grace. Ouch!

  124. SJ44

Or, they could trade him in the off-season if it doesn’t work out.

Just because he has a no trade, doesn’t mean wouldn’t get traded.

If he pitches well, he would actually have some value to the Yankees on the trade market.

Everybody wants to go “young” with their pitching until the young guys pitch and either struggle or get hurt.

Its happened all over baseball this year.

Hughes, Kennedy, Buchholz, the young Rockies pitchers, all have struggled.

Several of the Braves and Blue Jay young pitchers have suffered season ending injuries requiring surgery.

Veteran pitchers, if they pitch well, always have some type of value in the marketplace.

  125. dave

seriously where is this washburn stuff coming from? pete is the only thing i’ve seen about washburn…

  126. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Who is this blond moron on fox? Hank hinting at the Yankees going after Bonds. Um no, he was likely asked if the Yankees will talk about Bonds, he said yes. Since when is that hinting that the Yankees will go after Bonds.

  127. Gus

Getting Washburn for pretty much zero is a no brainer. There is no debate about it like steve posted he has been pitching better and maybe ia ma optimistic but i feel that the excitiment of coming here will make him do well. If he comes close to how he has been over the last month than we are gonna be in such great shape to beat out at least Tampa. If we got my nephew Wonger back my dream of winning the world series in game 6 or 7 at Yankee Stadium to close the place out may come true. Can you imagine???????

  128. Gus

I would leave yankee stadium only when they make us leave if we win the ws at the stadium this season

  129. Dr. J

We need to give Washburn a soft landing spot.

His first start as a Yankee on Sunday Night against Boston?

If he gets killed, the next morning will be all over how this was a terrible trade.

Then again, we are not in any position to give away games and Ponson against that lineup is disaster

  130. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

…Were Joe Buck and Tim McCarver just praising the Yankees?

  131. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Either my wants are very simple or I have been living right and the stars have all aligned to bring about some perfection in the last day or so.

I got to watch last night’s game; I am getting to watch the rerun of it right now, (bottom of the 9th just starting); I got to watch a million iterations of Melky’s catch of Manny’s almost homer on Yankees classics when I turned the station to watch what was on YES; and I got to watch the FOX talking heads remark about the brilliant deal the Yankees just made in getting Marte and Nady (and I totally agree with that by the way).

(And of course this is all on the heels of watching the Yankees turn into second-half Titans and watch the Sux lead over the Yankees precariously slip away.)

To parapharse Joe D, I thank the Lord for making me a Yankee fan!

I am such a happy kid right now.

  132. Jeter

    Every team, Every Team

  133. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

So what numbers did Nady and Marte take?

  134. Papi

    Every Game, Every Game

  135. Psyluk

Bobby Meachem doing the intros? What, they couldn’t get the guy who was serving Fenway Franks?

This feels like a bad omen…

  136. canocabrera

Well I guess we have the ten best players in baseball!

  137. Chaz

if meachem is as hesitant waving guys home as he was reading that lineup maybe arod wont die by the end of the season

  138. LeoSerra

meacham is worse at public speaking than at sending guys from third. he just called melky “up-and-young-coming.”

  139. tim boat

already missed the first pitch of an inning. great job Fox

  140. Cajun Yankee

Game time temp is 83º and humidity is 54%. Must be nice…

  141. Big Joe

Now I know how Meacham got the job. He keeps telling Girardi that he’s the best 3rd base coach in the american league

  142. joe

    Nady - #29
    Marte - #34

  143. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Fox did a pretty good job with the All Star game, so of course they’re going to be annoying today.

  144. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

I guess it’s really a nice thing but I hate watching Jeter always making nice with the Sux players.

    Ugh.

  145. Psyluk

Oh wow, 3 out of 4 games twelve times this year. Professor McCarver broke out the abacus for this one.

  146. Ron

How about Anthony Reyes going to Cleveland? Right now, the track record is pretty bad for ex-USC aces. The last three, if I’m not mistaken, were Prior, Reyes, and IPK. Reyes still has a chance to be good, and Cleveland got him for a relief prospect.

    Goddamn Mike Lowell.

  147. Phil - 27 in '08

For all the criticism of Joe Buck, he was very respectful in doing the announcing of the players at the All Star game. He gave extra time for the Yankees and put emphasis on Yankee Hall of Famers for the crowd.

  148. Joe m

People get over the #21 deal. He was good but not great the number will never be retired

  149. Global Warming

Buck has never been a problem for me, it’s always been McCarver.

  150. DFox

“Oh wow, 3 out of 4 games twelve times this year. Professor McCarver broke out the abacus for this one.”

    LOL!

  151. mel

    I really hate Wakefield…

    Be good, Andy!

  152. Wayne Tollenson Boys

I’m sick of hearing about how great the Red Sox are at home.

Post All-star break I think the Yanks are 8-1 in their last 9 games at Fenway? Can someone check this?

  153. PBL

haha, meachem looks good at the intros now

  154. tim boat

Marte got 34? Wasn’t that Hughes’ number? Whats with the Yankees giving out other players’ numbers this year while they’re on the DL. Not cool.

I feel bad for those who bought Hughes jerseys.

  155. Ron

Lou Pinella having fun in Chicago. Hasn’t gotten himself ejected yet.

  156. Psyluk

    Dan Begin’s no Sinatra, haha.

  157. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Both Buck and McCarver are better than the guys that called the ALDS last year.

  158. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Alex, you idiot

  159. gayle

glad that bobby thinks every player we have is the best in the world, best in the game and if they are not the best right now then they soon will be

  160. Ron

    Nope, he’s been tossed.

  161. DFox

Hughes is going back to 65.

  162. Ron

    Andy, strikes.

  163. Wolf In Pinstripes

Youkilis looks like a gay jack-in-the-box on steroids when he bats.

  164. Chaz

i wouldve like gardner to get one more start today and nady get here tomorrow night
he hit a couple of bullets last night but right at jacoby and coco
he absolutely had to go down and get his confidence back but i felt like he was turning it around but then again i really like him so im probably a bit biased

  165. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Aww, Andy, can we please do this strike throwing thing?

  166. Psyluk

Youkilis has the 2nd most annoying batting stance in baseball, right behind Craig Counsell.

  167. Ron

Oh, this is just a great spot.

    Game’s started, boys!

  168. Dana

I wish there was some explanation as to why Betemit continues to survive this roster.

  169. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    ….

Andy. Outs. OUTS. Not hits. OUTS.

  170. Psyluk

This has the feeling of “letdown” all over it.

  171. Ron

    Wonderful.

  172. Wayne Tollenson Boys

Had to look up Yanks vs. Sox at Fenway.

So far this year: Yanks are 1-0, thanks to 1-0 win yesterday.

    2007:
Yanks 2-1 second half @ fenway

    2006:
Yanks 5-0 second half @ fenway (5 game sweep)

    2005:
Yanks 4-2 second half @ fenway (swept 3 game series)

  173. Ron

Looks like Nady’s going to have to hit two grand slams instead of just the one.

  174. joe

    A-Rod’s fault

  175. Psyluk

Dana, its because Betemit can play every position in the infield and can switch hit. Not well, but he can.

  176. sw

    Settle down, Andy. :?

  177. will

pettite doesn’t have it. good game

  178. Buzz

    wow this umpire suxs

  179. Phil - 27 in '08

Karstens being sent to the Pirates while McCutchen and Ohlendorf have been assigned to Indy (Pirates’ AAA team). No word on Tabata yet.

  180. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

When Andy started at Fenway last September, it wasn’t particularly pretty, either.

Yankees scored 6 in the 8th to win it.

  181. Alan

Andy is not as crisp as his last outing. It looks like he’s aiming the ball.

  182. Psyluk

This ump has a tiny strike zone.

  183. Wangawa

This Pettitte guy stinks. We should have Phil Franchise pitching this game.

… I’m referring to Phil Coke, of course.

  184. Pedro

Hope Yankees’ hitters are paying attention. Take some freaking pitches.

  185. Buzz

andy is not getting anything on the coners

  186. Ron

This is my least favorite umpire team in the bigs. Angel Hernandez thinks the game is about him, Marty Foster’s half-blind, and I’m pretty sure we’ve had issues with Cousins in the past.

  187. bob

pay a guy 28 million a year, you’d think he could handle a ground ball.

  188. Steve

Anyone else having trouble getting onto NYYFANS?

  189. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    What does “5 and 10 guy” mean? I know, I know, I’m slow…

  190. BBB

ugh, this is why I can’t wait for Nady to replace Abreu in RF next year.

And to make matters even worse, my local Fox affiliate is airing Phillies/Braves so I have to listen to Sterling. Although thats better than McCarver, but I wanted to see Nady, spammit. Sick of Sterling’s RS fellatio, right now he is acting as if Wakefield is Cy Young…

  191. Phil - 27 in '08

5 years with one team, 10 in the majors total.

  192. Psyluk

Rebecca, it means that a player has ten years of major league experience, and 5 years with one team, which affords him a no trade clause in trades.

  193. Buzz

    this umpire is a joke

  194. SJ44

    Rebecca,

10 and 5 means 10 years of ML service time and 5 years with the same team.

When a player has that, he has a trade veto option on his deal.

  195. PBL

5 years with a team 10 years in the majors. per the new collective bargaining agreement, 5 and 10 players need to approve any trade they are involved in

  196. BBB

    OK, time to answer back!

  197. Pedro

Andy seems to feel the pressure when pitching at Fenway.

How about taking some pitches now guys?

  198. Ron

Carlos Marmol’s command has gone in the toilet. This is what happens when young arms are ridden into the ground.

  199. Cassandra

Watching the game on Fox, Theo says they will trade Manny if he waves his contract.

Wow. You usually don’t see a GM put that out on the air. Obviously, he’s said this to Manny’s agent, if not Manny, on a personal level.

It’s like he’s publically daring Manny.

  200. Wolf In Pinstripes

OK, it’s only one inning and only two runs.

    Come on, bats!

  201. SJ44

How do you think Andy is “under pressure”.

An error on a routine ball cost the Yankees 2 runs. It happens.

Has nothing to do with “pressure”.

A July game isn’t a “pressure” game. It may be for fans but not for players.

  202. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Thanks guys! Really appreciate that.

  203. Buddy Biancalana

Marte will most likely change his # when he gets to NY.

  204. Ron

Ladies and Gentlemen, now batting, #29, Xavier Nady!

  212. rod-knee

is it just me or do you think a few of these called strikes have more to do with the fact that the game is on fox rather than where they actually cross the plate?

  213. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

Was that Cashman’s Dr. Evil pose?

  214. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Cassandra: No, I haven’t, but a friend did give me the book. Why do you ask?

  215. JoeT 28 in 09!!

    I see Nady has power

  216. Ron

This is Perkins all over again…except we’re trailing 2-0.

  217. Alan

    Nady wearing Igawa’s old number.

  218. #9

    “#29, Xavier Nady!”

Hey! That use to be Bob Shirley’s #… I am outraged!!

  219. Fredo Corleone

Sounds like Buck is angling to give Nady’s introductory speech at Cooperstown.

  220. Psyluk

Wow, McCarver is on fire today.

The key to catching and hitting a knuckleball……is to wait as long as you can.

  221. Cassandra

I only raise it cuz it has a great segment on the 5 and 10 rule, sometimes known as the Curt Flood rule.

  222. Pedro

    Back to sucking at offense.

  223. BBB

Wow. How come Wakefields strike zone is the size of Texas?

  224. Psyluk

Wow, I am REALLY not liking this home plate umpire. I don’t think Andy likes it, either.

  233. rod-knee

it’s official pettite is not going to get one called strike today.

  234. Psyluk

Unless Pettitte grooves it down the middle, he’s not getting the call.

  235. Buzz

wow! out of the 5 pitches 4 of them were strikes…

  236. Pedro

That’s BS. THe strikezone is way bigger for Wakefield.

  237. BBB

    “It’s not, those are strikes”

Are you serious? lol please, Andy’s strike zone is the size of a f’n postage stamp. I guess these umps are feeling a little bitter about how hard their boys got pwned last night.

  238. Ron

Andy looks about as bad as we’ve seen him this year.

  239. Big Joe

I really can’t take one of the yankee “throwaway” games on national tV. Come on Andy.

  240. Ari

am I the only one who thinks this strike zone looks a little tight?

  241. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

It’s been two innings, Pedro. Geez.

  242. Psyluk

Wakefield’s ball drops through the top of the zone. Pettitte is trying to come through the corners. The ump has a really tight zone around the edges of the plate. I didn’t really have an issue with Wakefield’s pitches, with the exception that the Yankee hitters swung through them.

  243. chaossolver

omg tim mccarver… no more please no more

  244. Buzz

this is the smallest strike zone i ever seen

  245. Big Joe

He’s getting squeezed but he is not sharp either. He has missed a bunch up in the zone. Definitely not hitting the glove (yet)

  246. Cody

“Marte (No. 40) is also in the Yankees bullpen and could make his debut if needed.”

I’m guessing he’s misspoken, right? Everyone is saying #34 - they wouldn’t give away Hughes’ and Wang’s numbers just because they’re on the DL.. this was posted at the Bomber’s Beat blog.

  247. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Ari: Nope.

  248. Pedro

“It’s been two innings, Pedro. Geez.”

Eleven innings. Unless you think they were great last night.

  249. Ron

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I haven’t seen any REALLY egregious calls yet.

  250. Ari

OH.MY.GOD! This umpire has got to be kidding me. Andy should rifle one to his head.

  254. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

If I’m Andy right now, I am literally *thisclose* to flipping. Last night ALL of these pitches are called strikes.

    That last one looked lowish.

  258. bob

this ump is DEFINITELY pro redsox. his strike zone is ridiculous.

  259. Pedro

Pettitte should walk off the mound. Refuse to pitch unless they change the HP ump.

By design and with the help of the HP umpire, the Sux are driving Andy’s pitch count sky high. The bullpen will get work today.

  273. Buzz

does he have a bad history with the yankees?

  274. BBB

    “Definitely a hitter’s ump.”

Yeah, except when his boyfriend Wakefield is on the mound. Lame.

  275. Someone Else

    Oh, Darryl Cousins, surprise surprise.

This entire umpire crew should be sent to single-A to learn the strike zone. There is no consistency, at all. A bunch of idiots.

  276. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Okay offense, now’s the time to get something going.

  277. Ron

That is a fantastic description. It stiff baffles me that he actually hits anything. It’s like Sheffield’s swing without the balance.

  278. joe

Youkilis has nothing on you guys when it comes to whining!

  279. Psyluk

“That is a fantastic description. It stiff baffles me that he actually hits anything. It’s like Sheffield’s swing without the balance.”

    Or the power.

  280. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

A lot of baseball fans can’t stand the Yankees because of trades like Nady/Marte.

Fans of other teams bitch about the umpires just as much as Yankee fans do.

  281. Cassandra

This guy is worse than Eric Gregg.

  282. SCRANTON

Any Wasburn news as of yet?

  283. Ron

    “Or the power.”

Actually, given how hard he swings, I’m almost surprised he doesn’t hit more homers and hit for a much lower average.

  284. Ari

    Joe,
    Point taken.

  285. Big Joe

come on guys…you can’t really think certain umps favor certain teams. Their strike zones may favor certain “types of pitchers” but I don’t believe any of them intentionally pick sides. Andy needs to show control then he’ll get the edges. He’s being squeezed but its his own fault for the way he started by missing the glove so much.

  286. Psyluk

He’s a line drive hitter. It’s almost a throwback to the days when guys never struck out, but couldn’t hit it out of the park.

Guys should just stand there like molina.

  287. Someone Else

    “CREW F
    COUSINS, Derryl - cc
    HERNANDEZ, Angel
    COOPER, Eric
    FOSTER, Marty”

WORST umpiring crew in baseball. Hands down.

  288. Ron

Well, Tim returned the favor by walking his own crappy hitter.

  289. Phil

The Red Sox players bitch about and at umpires more than any group of fans.

  290. Buzz

damon should take the first 2 pitch
