Joba makes some history at Fenway

July
26

How unique was what Joba Chamberlain did tonight?

The last time the Yankees had a starter age 22 or younger win a game at Fenway Park was in 1964 when Mel Stottlemyre threw a six-hit shutout.

This fine note courtesy of Was Watching.

This awesome quote from Jason Giambi on Joba being a starter:

“I know it was a tough decision for management to move Joba. But once (Chien-Ming) Wang went down, it became the genius move of the century.”

The genius move of the century? You have to love the Big G.

Meanwhile, I’m not sure Tim Wakefield will be the man to do it. But the Red Sox will retaliate against the Yankees for Joba going after a Youkilis. It’s just a matter of time. Joba has more than a little Roger Clemens in him and it’s guys like that who will bring the rivalry back to a boil.

You know what? Good. The rivalry has been a little tame lately. Enough of this namby-pamby everybody is friends stuff.

Joba has effectively made Youkilis his little toy (pg description)

  2. Buddy Biancalana

I could see Papsmear trying to back up his boys, but if he’s in the game, it’s not a good sign for the Yanks. I assume Jeter will be the usual target.

  3. bigjf

I think Youk was just upset that it went off his bat. Joba had that planned all along. We did it all the time when we were 8 years old. The old “throw at him and hit the bat for a cheap strike” trick! Joba Rules!

  4. ian Nobody

i hope no one gets a concussion from this

“Joba has more than a little Roger Clemens in him and it’s guys like that who will bring the rivalry back to a boil.”

    I love it.

  6. CaptainsCorner

Everyone knows it wasn’t on purpose but I really hope that it doesn’t happen again because Arod or Jeter are really going to get it. Everyone knows it is coming. It is funny though that because Youk is such a crybaby it is such a big story and everyone in the media is writing about it. Jeter and Arod but mostly Jeter has been getting hit for years and it was never a big deal to anyone. Pedro never get questioned for it. I also remember Timlin hitting Jeter a couple of times and once in the head. Of course no one made a big deal about it. Boston didn’t do it on purpose but they did it to put fear in the Yanks heads and back them off the plate. Someone get Youk his pacifier so a brawl doesn’t start.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

    Great Quote from Jason.

Also, check out what Yankee pitching has been doing since the break:

  8. YanksFanLV

I think that Joba threw at him, obviously Youk would get out of the way. Paps will come in and throw at one of our guys, but hey thats baseball, it’s how the game is played. I love the fact that the rivalry is coming back, I heard someone say a few days ago “I like the sox and I don’t mind the Yankees” I wanted to punch him straight in the junk. when there are people like that, obviously the rivalry is dying.

good work Joba, keep it up.

  9. tim boat

think back to Joba’s debut in Toronto. That was the game that the Jays threw at A-Rod, benches cleared and Clemens later nailed Rios, glad to see Joba was taking notes on that.

  10. tim boat

Even the Sox broadcasters were saying Joba wasn’t intending to hit him, yet you’ll still have BoSox fans whining about headhunting, which is ironic in and of itself considering how many times Pedro (the king of throwing at people’s heads) nailed our guys, and tallying out the HBP total in this rivarly over the years, our guys have been on the recieving end more often than not.

  11. tim boat

and how jealous are just about every other MLB player of Joba and Manny who’ve essentially lived out the fantasy of most other MLB players by getting to take a shot at Youkilis, who is without a doubt the biggest whiner in the game today.

  12. Jorge Tabata

    Joba’s last 3 starts

    19.2 IP, 16 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 26 Ks - 1.89 ERA

  13. Joe D

I’d have at least some semblance of respect for Youkilis if he at least feigned running towards the mound. He’s very soft, hence being bitch slapped by Manny. It’s amazing how Boston doesn’t like being on the end of it like we were with Pedro. Jetes and Sori consecutively hit and then to the hospital? Remember? I LOVE this. We’re showing some cojones and I think it is no coincidence that we’re pitching in and we have a new manager.

  14. I don't see why not...

Joba pitched a great game tonight, but did you see Farnsworth in the 8th? Don’t get me wrong, but are we really sure that Joba should be a starter?

  15. see above

    Wait…. WHAT?

  16. ranger11

Who do you propose to replace Joba in the starting rotation so he could pitch the eighth? If he didn’t pitch the first seven the score would have been 7-1 going to the eighth not 1-0. I hope you’re kidding around with that one.

  17. House

“Joba pitched a great game tonight, but did you see Farnsworth in the 8th? Don’t get me wrong, but are we really sure that Joba should be a starter?”

PLEASE OH LORD, please tell me that is sarcasm or tongue in cheek.

  18. Joe Mama

    Did you see Joba in the 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th and the 7th

with someone else on the mound today for the first 7 we see Joba on the bench for the 8th.

  19. Dalers

Bout time we had a ballsy starter. How many times have DJ and A Rod been hit?

  20. I don't see why not...

100% sarcasm…just couldn’t decide on which emoticon would best convey it. Was a stupid debate (or non-issue really) to begin with.

  21. mel

When Joba pitches high and tight (perfectly legal) to Youkilis, it looks like it’s going at his head because he’s squatting.

  22. raymagnetic

    I don’t see why not. :?:

  23. raymagnetic

Sorry I meant :???: I think that’s the emoticon you should have used

  24. back bench

    Per SI,

”I was the second-best pitcher today,” Beckett said, ”and ultimately that gets you a loss most of the time.”

”He has great command until Youk gets in there,” Francona said.

  25. I don't see why not...

    Thanks Ray, noted.

  26. fred from jersey

maybe next time Joba is pitching Youk’s knee can hurt too.

  27. Barry Lane

This is an incredibly stupid series of posts. Not smart and not funny. Nothing. The Yankee way of getting even is to win. Torre took this team in that direction. It was a good one. This series of comments in the course of the last few weeks has become petulant and self righteous. Not about baseball at all, but about neurotic need.

And it doesn’t matter who gets hurt out there, anyone is the wrong one.

  28. tim boat

btw, these Boston whiners make Joba sound like Gred Maddux, going on and on about how his control is good until Youkilis hits. Hello?! In more than 1 start this year, walks have been an issue for Joba.

  29. Dalers

We found our Beckett. Thanx Tom Gordon.

  30. Cassandra

What did Joba go after Youk?

  31. V

Andy will make it 2 tomorrow.

  32. Cassandra

    When did Manny slap Youk?

  33. darkmoonfire

I’m not so sure that they will retaliate for Youklis.

After all, the Sox players seem to hate Youklis as much as Joba does.

  34. TKinDC (don't feed trolls!)

He’s a great player - but I’d be relieved to see him out of the AL EAST

    From Dan Shaughnessy:

“The possibility exists that Manny truly has a sore right knee. No one can get inside the head of an athlete and evaluate game-readiness. If Manny’s knee is killing him, there is no way for us to know, and we are wildly unfair to question his condition. I’m willing to take that chance. I don’t believe him.”

” . . . Ramírez had an MRI yesterday and it was clean. This time, the Sox plan to do something about this situation. Soon.”

  35. Annie Savoy

Some of us knew right from the beginning that Joba was a starter. Yankee brass made a mistake when they put him in the pen. Joba showed everyone what he can do on the mound last night in enemy territory. He not only has the physical skills of the pitcher, but has perfected his own ‘face’ on the mound - it’s the “stare”.

    Great work, Joba -

  36. just messin...

how about changing the lineup some now:

    damon
    nady
    cano
    arod
    giambi
    jeter
    abreu
    melky
    molina

  37. SJ44

First off, its funny to me how there was no media firestorm when both Soriano and Jeter were sent to the hospital by Pedro in ‘04.

That was just “good ‘ol fashioned hardball”.

Youk didn’t even get hit. EVERYBODY with a brain realizes he wasn’t being thrown at in that situation, and folks are whining.

Varitek said last night the Sox are going to “talk about” what to do with Chamberlain?

What are they going to do? Yell at him in the batting cage?

Its why the Red Sox will never be loved outside New England. Despite their success, its still a team full of whiners. Its all they do.

You know what the reality is? Joba is in Youk’s head. He is, and that ticks off the entire team.

Good. For years, we watched Yankee hitters get nailed time and time again by Red Sox pitchers and nothing was done about it.

Hell, there were times Torre told the team not to do anything about it. Those times are over.

Girardi doesn’t take that crap from people and doesn’t tell pitchers not to go after guys.

Do folks think its a coincidence HR’s allowed by Yankee pitchers are way down this year?

Its because, under Girardi and Eiland, Yankee pitchers have reclaimed the inner half of the plate from hitters again.

    It makes a big difference.

  38. crawdaddie

Chamberlain is definitely in his Youk’s head.

  39. SJ44

    Randy,

Wrote my post before I read yours.

    You are exactly right.

Class is one thing. Rolling over is another.

The last 3 years, the Yankees moved to the rolling over side of the debate. Frankly, they got too soft in the last 3 years of the Torre regime.

A play was named “Damn Yankees” for a reason. This team had no edge about it from 2005-last year.

This year, they do. Led by Girardi and a kid like Chamberlain, there is a certain edge to this group.

It comes from hunger. Guys like Girardi have a lot to prove. That type of edge is a positive, IMO.

  40. Doris From Rego Park

    SJ-
where have you been? you have been missed

  41. just messin...

keeping the team in the clubhouse while the sox got thier rings would have been a totally class-less move. thank god you weren’t in charge.

fortunatly, a team that has been champions so many times knows the importance of showing respect and class after losing.

and next year, we can hand them out in front of the sox.

  42. yanksince57-aceves/mccutchen/next?

    PRELIMINARY 2009 ROSTER?
    posada/molina
    texeira/rodriguez/betemit
    cano/jeter/gonzalez
    damon/matsui/abreu/nady
    cabrera/gardner
    sabathia/chamberlain/wang/pettite/mussina
    rivera/veras/marte/ramirez/robertson/bruney

seems to be old and expensive, but quite loaded!

  43. dont know about that

yanks57, you have them re-signing everybody and getting tex and cc? this team would likely break the all-time payroll record. abreu/marte/nady will not be cheap and all will require long term dealt. tex and cc’s contract demands will be astronomical. in 2010, this team would likely set the record for the oldest team ever fielded.

  44. Major Deegan

The Yankees need to remember what Donnie Mattingly’s approach to hitting a knuckleball is.
If the pitch is up high, let the bat fly.
    Aaron Boone certainly remembered.

  45. Vrsce

    SJ44

You are correct about Torre; he stayed 5 years past his best before date.

  46. dont know about that

i meant *multi-year deals* for marte, nady and abreu

  47. SJ44

Virtually no chance Tex is in NY next year. No chance Tex and CC together will be in NY next year.

Probably between the Dodgers and Yankees for CC next year.

  48. justin

Have we allowed a home run since the break? I can’t remember one. The pitching is stepping up. Last night I was at the game, and from my experiance sox fans are scared of joba. From what I saw they think he is some sort of god. Btw the yanks fans went nuts when youk k’d after joba went high and tight. 100% the best baseball game ide ever been to. I’ve been to about 20 yanks games, and that was the biggest step up pitching performance ide seen in a long time. Also someone look up how many friday night games we have won in a row at fenway, I think ude be suprised

  49. Doreen

Just visited the Tampa Bay Rays’ website to check out the score from last night’s game - they won - and was greeted with this information:

It’s the last chance to buy 2008 season tickets “WITH POSTSEASON OPPORTUNITY.”

    Bizarre or what??????

Anyway, what a game by Joba. I like that he took the Halliday experience and learned from it, elevating his game knowing he was facing a guy who would not give up too many runs.

And although Tabata may indeed turn out to be a great player one day, I like the Yankees trade overall. None of the three pitchers given looked to be a part of the long-term plans for the major league team. I also like that they have Marte and Nady for next year. I hope everything goes well with the review of the physicals.

If Joba pitching up and in to Youkilis means fewer first-punches by the Red Sox at our guys, fine. I just hate to think that someone is going to get seriously injured at some point. BUT, I so do like that the Yankees pitchers are pitching inside more. As SJ44 said, HRs are down, and so are walks!

I love how the trade rumor unfolded on the blog last night. I wasn’t following during the game but went back after the game and browsed through the posts. It was really amusing! :)

  50. yanksince57-aceves/mccutchen/next?

actually, i think cashman will spend more time pondering the arbitration/draft pick rules. then he will on spending for big ticket FAs. btw, that IS not the roster i want to see :)

  51. Doreen

    SJ44 -

You don’t think CC will stay with Milwaukee, especially if they go the playoffs? He seems to like it there, they seem to like him. I know - money is probably the issue.

And, if the Yankees do get Washburn, do they still go after CC? I think if they end up passing on Washburn, then you know they’ll be going hard after CC, but otherwise, I’m not so sure.

  52. Kelli in Conn.

The results are in and Youkilis has clearly won the top bawlbaby award in MLB.
It’s not possible to count how many times the Captain has been backed off the plate and like Youkilis, his batting stance is subject to being pitched close.
Maybe if the bawlbaby stopped springing up & down in the batter’s box he might be more ready for being pitched inside.
It was hilarious when Youkilis hollered expletives at Joba after he K’d and Joba turned his back to him like he wasn’t even there.
    :-)

  53. SJ44

Last night takes the edge off this series for the Yankees. Even if they lose the next two games, its ok.

You just don’t want to get swept at Fenway.

If they can win today? Now, it gets fun. You have a house money game with Sir Sidney on the mound.

Either way, the team leaves Boston feeling good about themselves and fortified with 2 good, veteran players.

Its why last night was so important. Winning the first game of this series takes all the pressure off the Yankees.

Its the Red Sox that have issues now. Didn’t get Marte. The “Manny being Manny” stuff is reaching a boiling point.

Even the Youkilis stuff is getting old. The entire industry knows how much of a whiner he is. If you are his teammate, that stuff gets old after awhile.

The Red Sox are finding out what the Yankees have known for ages. Its very, very tough being the hunted. Lots of pressure and it isn’t always fun.

Its much easier being the underdog everyone roots for.

  54. Buzz

Youk is so close to the plate tell him to back off and that is a pitch high and in

  55. SJ44

    Doreen,

Nope. CC will go to the highest bidder. He’s not staying in Milwaukee.

I don’t think getting Washburn (if they do) impacts what they do with CC. It may impact whether or not they bring back both Moose and Andy but, it won’t impact CC.

The Yankees really want CC. Unless they change their minds between now and free agency, I expect them to go all in to get CC. “All in” meaning offering him a giant contract.

They realize CC and Wang at the top of the rotation gives them two, under 30 year old innings eaters.

You add Chamberlain to the mix, you have 3 “aces” in your rotation.

If Moose and Andy take one year deals, you basically have the best rotation in baseball going into 2009.

Makes filling out the rest of the team a whole lot easier.

  56. yanksince57-aceves/mccutchen/next?

MY FIRST HOPED FOR 2009 ROSTER
    posada/molina
    (unknown,youngish prospect)/rodriguez/miranda
    cano/jeter/gonzalez
    damon/matsui/cabrera/nady/(2 unknown,youngish prospects)
    chamberlain/wang/pettite/mussina/hughes
    rivera/veras/marte/ramirez/robertson/melancon

  57. Doreen

    Thanks for your take, SJ44.

I guess they tried going “all young” and it backfired. Probably a good lesson learned. Slower is better, if not frustrating for people who want to see the future now. It was worth a shot, I guess. But the Yankees absolutely cannot have yet another season of starting from behind the 8-ball.

  58. yanksince57-aceves/mccutchen/next?

this trade just reinforced my feeling that cashman is far superior to the strawman his detractors keep beating. in the off season he will once again surprise us with one or more inspired trades and/or signings!

  59. 108 stitches

With Cashman’s penchant for deadline deals it was only a mild surprise that he pulled off Nady / Marte.
The only surprise was that it was done sooner than next week but ever the stealth guy that he is and never tipping his hand, it got done in time for both to be used vs. Boston.
A red flag should have been noticed when Pittsburgh expressed interest in Ohlendorf but Cashman saw it and acted before another GM had the chance.
In this case, the early bird got the worms. There’s no pressure now if Cashman decides to go ahead with a Washburn deal. Most Yankee watchers feel Cashman isn’t done yet.

  60. SJ44

    Doreen,

Basically, they are doing both. Hindsight is always 20-20. Let’s face it, nobody saw Hughes falling off the map after the way he pitched last September, in the post-season, and after his first start of the year. It happens.

I’m also not giving up on Kennedy. Not everybody can be Joba. Sometimes, it takes more time for guys to do what it takes to stay in the bigs. Getting sent to AAA isn’t only humbling, its sometimes necessary in order to get yourself doing the things you need to do in order to be an effective big league pitcher.

Fortunately, it seems like Hughes’ rib injury was the primary reason for his problems. I say “fortunately” because that will heal and he will be fine.

They still have all of their A List prospects in the organization.

What last night showed was why Cashman has been so intent on stockpiling pitching in the draft. The more pitchers you have in your organizations, the more options it allows you.

Think about it. It wasn’t so long ago (about 4 years) that guys like Kontos and Ohlendorf would have been considered the “jewels” of the Yankee farm system.

Now, they are “filler guys” because of people like Ramirez, Veras, Robertson, Melancon, Sanchez, Brackman, Pope, McAllister, Heredia.

I’m not even counting their first round pick (who is still unsigned) Garrit Cole, who is a stud.

Tabata? If he can get it together, he has a chance to be a very good player. However, that’s 3 years away IF he gets it now.

Meaning, in the Yankee world, he is expendable.

Overall, the team got better last night and didn’t disturb their long range plans.

All you can ask for when doing a deal.

  61. Doreen

    SJ44 -

Agreed on all counts. Joba’s a “once in a blue moon” pitcher. For IPK, I believe the adversity he experienced in the first month of this season will ultimately serve him well. He had soared through the system without a hitch. Perhaps he got a bit caught up in it all. That’s okay, it happens. It’s heady stuff, I think. I still believe he will be a very good pitcher for the Yankees at some point - probably next season. Especially if they do end up getting Washburn IPK and Hughes will more than likely have all the time they need to fine tune.

Do you think Hughes will pitch in a winter league? I read in this morning’s paper that he will definitely have an innings limit next season.

Anyway, it all looks pretty good right now. At the very least, the Yankees should be in it right through September. Of course, more is hoped for, but just a few short weeks ago, the season didn’t look nearly this promising. Maybe Brian Cashman does have some idea of what he’s doing with all those prospects, after all. :???: :)

Going to the “poor man’s” Yankees-Sox game tonight (Trenton versus the Portland Sea Dogs)!

  62. Glenn

Boston has reached the end of their rope with Manny …..

    http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2008/07/26/now_hes_a_guaranteed_out/

  63. Steve Balboni

I think the fact that Nady has another year left on his contract spells Abreu next year. But lets enjoy this year before worrying about next year. The post All Star game Yankees are a completly different team and much more enjoyable to watch. Hitting, pitching and defense all clicking at the same time.

  64. Yankee Trader

Yankees likely to finalize trade for Washburn which runs through 2009.
Resigning either or both Mussina and Pettitte will depend on how well they pitch now and in the playoffs.

Therefore its likely rotation for 2009 will be:
    Chamberlain
    Wang
    Washburn
    Pettitte or Mussina, maybe both
Hughes/Kennedy/ Or FA signing Oliver Perez, Ryan Dempster, AJ Burnett. Really doubt CC in terms of length of contract.
    Pavano gone-saves 11M

    Bullpen:
    Rivera
    Marte
    Ramirez
    Veras
    Robertson
    Bruney possibly
    Farnsworth gone-saves 5M, Hawkins gone-saves 3.75M

Nady moves to RF/Abreu not resigned-saves 16M/ nets draft picks or possibly traded now for prospects.

Damon back in left, Melky, unless traded in center

Posada at 1st/Catcher-Giambi gone saves 23M

Matsui at DH/possibly LF unless when proven healthy is traded. Damon would have more trade value, but would hate to see him go.

  65. PittsburghYankeeFan

I think Joba was trying to go really high and tight on Youkoulis to get him to back off the plate and the pitch got away from him. He’s only 22, and still learning how to throw this kind of pitch.

Um, sorry, Kevin. Either back off the plate or be Joba’s learning experience with your (admittedly) large head. Your choice.

I think Manny wants a trade–to the Yankees.

  66. SJ44

I’m hopeful Hughes will pitch in the Arizona Fall League. That would be good for him and also allow him to get some innings in, something he really needs to do, this season.

The minor league season ends in August so, he’s going to have to get innings in somewhere. The ASL may be the best place for him to get them.

  67. Steve Balboni

I wouldnt be surprised to see Manny in today’s game. Manny hasn’t hit well against hard throwers this year ( a sign his bat is slowing down?) and this might have been a good reason to sit him. I bet if Moose was throwing today, Manny would be in there.

  68. Cajun Yankee

Too bad Joba doesn’t play the field, I think we’d all like to see him on a daily basis. Inside Joba was probably holding it in from just busting out laughing after Pumpkin Head struke out.

I’d like to see a couple of more players get a little nasty, not dirty, but someone that plays with an edge, and a sharp edge at that.

Good article about Joba at Was Watching.

  69. yankee21

randy i, great 8.05 post. I have exactly the same tack of the last few years (post 2003 really) of the Yanks under Torre, they were the coolest and classiest bunch of soft guys in the game, and the sox took advantage of it.

one of the key reasons I was in favor of the girardi hiring, I just didn’t think Joe G would roll over and let things be like torre.

I got so sick and tired of seeing Jeter, A-rod continuously getting nailed and the Yankees not getting any retribution.

And that BS about the bugs in CLE, it still urks me that Torre did not do somethiing while Joba was getting lit up by damn bugs, no protest, no delay, no nothing, just stay in the da** dugout.

the redsox are the type of team that looks for any edge and exploits it, I hope the Yankees can be that kind of team again..

  70. Steve Balboni

SJ44- when does the Arizona Fall league start? Or are you thinking that Hughes is done for the season as far as the major league team and just have him throw innings.

  71. yankee21

It is amazing what a (7) game winning streak does, and especially when it comes against (3) teams that were ahead of you for the WC and the division. Amazing turnaround.

Without question going into the AS break, this team was like a dead man walking, once again, its July and the team is flying. What is it about the summer months that this team takes off?

  72. 86w183

I think Joba vs Youkilis is good baseball, but he’s got to stay away from the head… that’s not right, even if it is the “public enemy” up there.

Still have tons of assets for a possible upgraded starting pitcher or # 2 catcher. I’m okay with Washburn as long as Igawa or Hawkins is in the deal and there’s no extension. I don’t think there’s a better starter that will be offered up. Anything more expensive and let Washburn rot in Seattle.

Not going to worry too much about 2009, but the Yankees will be superbly position to spend some of the $ 80-million plus coming off the books and will have tremendous assets with which to pursue a top flight starter/slugger entering the final year of his contract.

does anyone see the yanks start to draft some position players the next few yrs…we always pick pretty late and with the surplus of pitchers i get why we always take them but the farm could def use some position players to develop. also, hat tip to cashman for fixing our major issue in the postseason last yr. our pitching is our strength and is what could carry us to the playoffs. the last few yrs we tried being carried by mostly hitting but were exposed when randy johnson, jaret wright would be starting and then having nothing besides mo in the bullpen. our bp is loaded now with mo-veras-robertson-damaso-giese-farnsworth-edwar….our rotation now is doing its job and if we get wang back sometime in sept we could have wang-joba-pettitte-moose which has gotta be up there with the bests…and oh yea our lineup is still top 10 in the league, old as it is…

so to hank, hall, randy, lonn and mr george steinbrenner- extend cashman

    The ASL starts in November.

Even if Hughes comes back in September (unlikely, IMO), he’s going to need innings. The ASL will help fill in the blanks, and also allow him to work on his stuff, in that regard.

  75. Drive 4-5

I just read the entire Boston Glpbe and Boston Herald sports sections and there is not one word about Joba Chaimberlain out pitching Jodh Beckett. The tone of their stories is the lack of run support last night for Beckett. They ignore the fact that, as well as Beckett pitched, Joba was much better….4 baserunners allowed vs 10.

It’s now very obvious that Joba is the Yanks answer to the Sox power pitcher at the top of the rotation. It’s very interesting that the Sox beat writers make no mention of that fact.

It’s as if they allow themselves to speak it, the words become a self fullfiling prophecy.

  76. 86w183

Yanks will be younger next year in all likelyhood. I can see Nady and Teixiera perhaps replacing Arbeu and Giambi and other Hughes or Kennedy (both?) in the rotation replacing either Pettite or Mussina (both?).

the master plans seems to be working very well…. what a difference seven wins and a great trade makes!

Hopefully the Nady acquisition will give Posada the piece of mind to go ahead and get that shoulder fixed. His ability to catch next year is a key factor in putting together tha ‘09 roster.

Arizona fall league is shortly after the World Series… early November. If Hughes does not make it back by September he may end up getting some work there.

  77. Doreen

Isn’t it just more difficult to get good position players when you draft as late as the Yankees do? I mean, the very best position players tend to go first. The Yankees “luck out” on good pitching prospects because of signability issues, no? That doesn’t happen so much with position players.

What is the strategy on position players? And when you get compensatory draft picks, where do they usually fall?

  78. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Can anyone explain this one to me?

I stayed up and watched the midnight version of Baseball Tonight because I was astounded to see that neither Melky’s catch or the Robby-Jeter DP made it on the 10:00 BBT. (Well not really since ESPN is nothing more than a dirtbag conscienceless front for the Sux organization.) So I figured maybe they didn’t get the feed in time for the 10:00 show. Well neither made the midnight show either. I thought both plays beat at least one or two of the web gems, but we all know ESPN and how they would never let the Yankees show up the Sux!

Well here’s the “strange” part. I also stayed up and watched the one-hour version of SportsCenter since I couldn’t get enough of Youklis storming away from the plate after Joba struck him out. But I also wanted to see the Top Ten plays of the day. Interspersed in those top 10 plays were the same 5 web gems - only Melky’s catch made it as the number 5 top play of the day - and to make matters worse, the four top plays after Melky’s weren’t all baseball.

So do you get my point? Melky’s catch wasn’t good enough to be a web gem but it was good enough to be in the top 10 plays of the day as number 5??????

Tell me ESPN is not the most pathetic bunch of Sux syncophants you’ve ever seen assembled, save one or two commentators. Talk about both dishonesty and stupidity wrapped into one package with respect to Melky’s catch making it to number 5 and the top 4 plays not all being baseball to boot. By my calculations that would have made Melky’s catch at least the number 2 or 3 web gem in reality (I truly don’t remember if there were 1 or 2 baseball highlights in those remaining 4 Top Ten plays of the day. There was at least 1.)

Dirtbag frauds and losers. That’s ESPN. I’m happy Harold Reynolds isn’t with those fools anymore.

  79. Drive 4-5

    Here’s from the Herald:

“Marty Foster, submitted the worst officiated game in the history of organized sports. (On that subject: Major League Baseball has a moral obligation to watch a replay of Foster’s effort last night.)”

As if the umpire was the reason the Yanks pitching dominated the Red Sox lineup. No kudos to the Yanks whatsoever.

  80. SJ44

Its a Boston paper and they are playing to their audience.

Wrong place to go to look for Yankee platitudes.

Especially from a media base that consist more of fans than objective commentary.

Foster stunk for BOTH teams last night.

Angel Hernandez at second base stunk for ONE team last night.

He blew two calls that directly helped the Sox.

Funny how that was “missed” in the whining about the umpiring last night.

  81. Boston Dave

“Even the Youkilis stuff is getting old. The entire industry knows how much of a whiner he is. If you are his teammate, that stuff gets old after awhile.”

A source from the Sox dugout has told me that pretty much all of the players hate Youk’s whining. He whines about everything (when he hits the ball hard but right at someone, every strike call that he doesnt agree with, etc.).

As I had said before, that was the cause of the fight with Manny when Manny man-slapped him. He told Youk to stop whining and Youk flipped out.

The media often makes it seem like the Sox have great team chemistry. They do, to a degree, but it’s more like a high school cafeteria with a bunch of cliques. You have the redneck group, the Latino guys, and Youk is in the whiner clique.

  82. SJ44

    Randy,

Cashman’s style is to wait things out, until the market cools off, and then strike when its time to strike.

I had some inside info they had a great chance to get Nady. I was also told Marte was headed to Boston.

Cash’s ability to add to the offer, thereby stealing Marte from the Sox, and striking quickly, is what good GM’s do.

Its also something he wouldn’t have been able to do 3 years ago because too many people would have been in George’s ear and that would have slowed down the process.

With the process (from the baseball side) streamlined, its much easier for him to do his job the way its supposed to be done.

He’s not perfect. No GM is. But, considering all he has to deal with when it comes to this particular job, he’s the perfect GM for the Yankees.

He understands how to “work the room” within the politics of the organization.

  83. Boston Dave

“It’s now very obvious that Joba is the Yanks answer to the Sox power pitcher at the top of the rotation. It’s very interesting that the Sox beat writers make no mention of that fact.”

didn’t the media bash and mock Hank when he said, of Joba, “He’s our Josh Beckett” ?

    who’s laughing now?

  84. yankee21

Angel Hernandez is without question one of the worst umpires in the game, I mean consistently bad judgement and strange calls- why is he even in existence?

Foster was consistently giving the edge to both pitchers last night,, Lowell blew up over a borderline pitch,, Yuke as usual over-reacted, and came across as the whiner he is.

  85. Doreen

On the play at second base last night where Pedroia (?) was shown to be out on the replay, was it me, or did the umpire look like he was smirking, if not laughing, afterwards?

I am not one to beat up on the umpires - they seem to spread their bad calls around most of the time, and I do think that most of the time over the course of a season the calls, favorable and unfavorable, tend to balance out. But the look on the ump’s face after that call was interesting to say the least.

The one thing that does trouble me is that there doesn’t seem to be a big incentive for umpires on the ML level to “get it right.” They surely don’t seem to work nearly as hard as the minor league umpires I’ve seen. My husband likened it to a teacher’s tenure; once they get to the ML, there’s no incentive to improve or even stay as sharp.

To be fair, there are many, many calls on instant replay that are sooooo close, and many times the umpires do get it right, amazingly. But the bad ones are really, really bad.

  86. FrankDiscussion

Youk is the only player that should come to the plate with a box of Kleenex, the most whiny, self-involved little man I’ve seen playing the game in awhile. The ump was calling the same strike zone all night long. He is overmatched by Joba, simple as that. As for retaliation, maybe… but not to worry with both Farnsworth and Sexson on the team. Manny can hide in the clubhouse just like he did with Tampa.

  87. dont know about that

so this manny thing is beginning to consume boston. seems like manny has just been manny one too many times. people calling for him to go, management vowing something will be done, etc! glad to see it. still, i cant imagine them moving manny this week, even though management apparently told shaunassey that something is going to be done within the next few days. but the view in beantown is that manny flat-out quit on the sox and must go.

all this talk, what i want to see is what they do if manny shows up today and has ‘recovered’ enough to play. does tito have the cohones to tell him, sorry, we’ve got guys who WANT TO play or does he just roll over and pencil him in? and if so, does manny go to the press and say he’s ready to play but being punished for being injured the last 2 games. if manny says he can play but isnt in the lineup, then he has probably played his last gave as a sox.

nice to see boston all focused on off-field issues and getting weaker while the yankees are winning and improving thier team. could be a set-up for another massacre.

  88. Drive 4-5

    SJ44,

I live in Mass. and have read the Globe for over 40 years. Writers like Leigh Montville, Bob Ryan and yes, Peter Gammons would call a spade a spade.

Since around ‘03 or so, it’s all changed. Now you’ve got Gordon Edes taking a paycheck from the Red Sox as a daily NESN commentator and still writes for the Globe.

  89. yankee21

the Yankees need to dig in today and not let up, don’t take the day off, like so often this offense does. I’m Girardi, I give them a quick wake up speech before the anthem of the need to focus and play hard.

You just know the redsox are coming out with guns blazing, I see them trying to strike quick, grab the lead, remove Wake after six innings+, ultimately bring in one of their over-hyped relievers and retailiate.

The sox were embarassed in a key game at home, something we haven’t seen too much of the last few years.

  90. Doreen

I’m beginning to think that the acronym ASG does not stand for All Star Game, but, for the Yankees, All Systems Go.

    Yankee21,

Going just by Jeter’s answers last night post-game, as well as Mariano and Giambi, I don’t think this team needs all that much of a reminder to stay focused. According to all of them all the games are ‘must win’ regardless of the opponent.

  91. G13

86- you really expect hughes/kennedy to fill andy and moose’s shoes next season? i dont know if you have seen any of this season but moose and andy have somewhere over 20+ wins and a large portion of the innings…look up hughes/kennedy’s numbers to compare. maybe theyve thrown 50 innings with no wins? plus why should the yanks replace them? ive andy pencilled in next yr as hes indicated he wants to pitch in the new stadium and with a strong team behind him id love to see him go back. and moose- if he takes another 2 yr deal then im all for it.

  92. Joe from Long Island

Some thoughts before I head out for Saturday chores -
    1. The Mets traded Nady to Pitt for Roberto Hernandez, in the wake of Duaner Sanchez getting injured a couple of years ago. Not Oliver Perez. Minaya regretted it then, and still today.

    2. No GM is perfect, says SJ44, and he is right. Someone posted yesterday that the Red Sox passed on Joba two years ago, leaving him available for the Yankees. If true, so much for Theo’s “brilliance”.

    3. I remember that when Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale were in their heyday, pitching up and in was how they got into hitters’ heads - especially the better hitters. Say what you want, Youkilis is a real good ballplayer and a dangerous hitter. Joba is in his head, esp. after striking him out swinging in that particular AB. Youkilis is now distracted by his emotions - and distraction is bad for hitting.

I’m not in the business, but I really think that if Joba had wanted to hit Youk, he would have hit him. There was another purpose to that pitch, and the way that Joba just turned his back and walked aroung the mound after the K demonstrated what that purpose was.

  93. PittsburghYankeeFan

    SJ44:

I agree with Hernandez blowing the second base calls.

Also, didn’t Crisp run out of the basepath in the 8th?

Joba and Mo adjusted to the wide strike zone on the right side of the plate (was Foster wearing horse blinders on his left eye?), Beckett did not. At least Foster was consistent.

The trade was good for both teams. Pittsburgh gets farm depth (which Littlefield destroyed) and a high risk, high upside hitter. Yankees get two realtively cheap players who have played in NY and are in their primes.

    Boston Dave -

Kudos to you for getting us that scoop on the Manny-Puke situation in the dugout and having it right on! Other people were postulating that it had to do with Pukelisp calling Manny on not running hard enough in the field that night or something, and Manny retaliating. You told us immediately that you had it from someone close to the Sux that it had to do with Manny being sick of Puke puking every time he came back to the dugout. That turned out to be the reason.

I say that when Boston Dave talks in terms of insider information, the lohud blog should listen!

  95. yankee21

    Doreen

you’re probably right about the lack of need to motivate the guys to stay focused, but this offense still does not instill confidence, collectively, they have taken many games off this year. Very frustrating all too often.

Today is not the day for another one.

  96. Drive 4-5

Hopefully last night’s trade sends a message to Seattle that the Yanks arent interested in trading upper tier prospects for an expensive 4th or 5th starter.

Doreen expressed the thought earlier that if the Yanks acquire Washburn and his ‘09 salary, they might be less inclined to go after CC. If that’s the case, I dont want Washburn.

  97. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

Angel Hernandez is a surly, punishing, inept umpire. However I’ve seen him shower his favors on teams other than the Yankees. It could be that the Yankees are his prime target, but he certainly doesn’t confine his horrendous calls to the Yankees.

  98. Yankee Trader

    SJ44-

It’s funny how so many, willing to have Cashman’s head for poorly constructing this team, now praise him!

In this deal we got two players, each in a separate deal, would have likely gotten a good AAA prospect and others.
Essentially we got Nady and Marte for one AAA player and 3 AA players. None of the pitchers had a future with this team, as there are better prospects ahead of them. People like Brackman, Sanchez, Melancon, Betances, Hughes, Kennedy, etc.

So many people feel it’s a lock for CC to come to the Yankees next year, and granted he would be a good pickup, but my guess is he goes elsewhere, as the Yankees will not want to offer 6-7 guaranteed years to a pitcher.

Thoughts on Oliver Perez, another under 30 lefty FA who dominated us and the Phillies and has shown more command, and would likely command less money.

  100. Doreen

    Yankee21 -

I’ll agree with you there - it’s been an “interesting” offensive season. Last season was feast or famine a lot of the times; this year, a little more famine than feast. As long as the pitching holds up though, they still only need to score one more than the other team to win. (Well, even if the pitching doesn’t hold up, that’s what you need - )

  101. YankeeVIP

Hahah.. Pete, thats great how you want the rivalry to spice up. Didnt expect that from you, but good to see.

Joba was a beast and its about time we starting playing with an edge.

Im sure its no coincidence that the Yankee pitching has been so good since Molina has been the regular catcher. Molina is a better defensive catcher and it seems the pitchers are more comfortable throwing to him (I am a big Jorge fan, but if pitchers are more comfortable with molina, you go with it). Give the man credit

  102. CB

Question - why did Giambi inside out that pitch last night into the shortstop hole to drive in that run? He actively pulled his hands in on a tough pitch by Beckett to hit that weak ground ball against the shift - something he hates doing.

I ask because Giambi has had opportunities to do that during the year multiple, multiple times. In big spots and at times when the team was really struggling to score any runs at all. But he rarely has taken that kind of conservative approach at the plate.

Giambi’s hitting .198 with RISP this season. How many runners has he left on second or third by hitting into the shift? We’ve seen that time and time again, even with two outs.

A lot of it had to do with Beckett - you score runs when you can. A lot of it was the fact that there were two outs.

But I think part of the reason why Giambi did that was becasue of Joba.

Playing in Fenway, you normally wouldn’t think scoring one run would be enough to win, especially against an offense like Boston’s. Under other circumstances I’d think that Giambi in that spot would have looked for a ball to drive. Two men on, man on third - maybe Beckett makes a mistake and Giambi gets a ball he can pull into the seats. That’s Giambi’s usual approach, even with RISP.

How many runners at third has this team stranded? How many has Giambi with the entire left side of the infield open?

But when you have a guy throwing like Joba was last night and you have a bullpen with Mariano in it the game is an entirely different one - even at Fenway. 1 run may very well be enough. And you can try to inside out a weak grounder to the hole to score the sure 1 run.

That’s the kind of play teams make when they have supreme confidence in their starting pitcher. When they really believe the guy on the mound for my side is going to shut down the other team’s bats and all we have to do is put up one run.

And that guy is 22. Just amazing. Boston was 36-11 at home last night - by far the best home record in baseball. Joba steps in and gives them no chance to score.

Last night all it took was one with the way he was throwing. And the yankee hitters knew it.

    That’s an ace.

  103. frankie d

Everyone at the bar was cheering when Joba threw at Youkilis. Then we erupted when he struck him out. It was awesome.

Oh and that the was sooo on purpose.. you don’t throw a 3-hit gem and happen to lose one up and in by the head haha

  104. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

It appears that I may be the only one who does not want Jared Washburn and feels the team can thrive nicely without him.

I hope the Yankee organization comes to the same realization, especially in light of the way the 2nd half has started off. If there were no Hughes or Wang anywhere on the horizon for the rest of the season I might be inclined to want to look for another starter. But that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I expect just one of them in the rotation next year, I wrote (both?) just like that because it could happen, not that I expect it.

I expect them to sign Pettite or Mussina but not both. But they certainly could sign ‘em both and set up quite a battle for the # 5 starter.

I don’t see how the Yankees don’t at least make a run at CC Sabathia… he’s eight years younger than Pettite and eleven years younger than Mussina. If he costs the same as Mussina + Pavano you could have a rotation of Sabathia, Chamberlain, Pettite, Wang and Hughes (or whatever kid wins the job) to go with a loaded bullpen…. pretty cool!

I’d still like to see this team upgrade # 2 catcher with a hitter like Olivo or Ross… Washburn at the right price helps this year, but certainly has an impact on the ‘09 strategy.

Gotta love this quote from Girardi:

“It’s unfortunate they gave a warning there for both sides,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “But I understand why they did it, and I understand why Youkilis is upset about it. But a 1-0 game, you are not going to hit the leadoff guy, that would just be crazy. But I understand why people get emotional.”

If that was intentional then I am thinking that Joba just has some kind of visceral reaction every time he sees that ugly mug of Youklis and goes into some kind of zone where it’s out of his control. Joba is much too much of a company man to chance putting a man on base with nobody out in a one-run game, that late in the game. He came very close to hitting the puke. If he did, that could have been the game.

regarding washburn, it entirely depends on what the Yankees have to give up. If it is simply Igawa and a class C type prospect, I make the move, if anything to give Girardi add’l options in the rotation and to give Cash additional trade options. If the Yankees have to give up really anyone of value or take Vidro back, I don’t make this move.
But again, if it is mainly Igawa for Washburn, I do it.

Having Washburn frees up Cash to deal Rasner who I think has some trade value to a NL team as a 4-5 starter.

whose to say Cash couldn’t then move Rasner as part of a package of MiL prospects and perhaps Melky (I’m dodging bullets here) and score a decent CF who can play D and actually hit?

If Wash flames out, we have Aceves, McCutcheon and IPK in the pipeline.

don’t know about that, Boston Dave gave it to us immediately. Like I think within minutes of it happening. Everything else we were hearing/thinking immediately had to do with Manny dogging it, which I believe happened right before that.

Not only that, he told us he had received a call on his cell phone from someone inside the clubhouse I believe, so you are either sitting there thinking that Boston Dave is delusional and wants everyone to think he has friends in high places, or you are sitting there believing it! And at the same time it was all going on, there were myriad others on the forum reporting that it had to do with Puke being mad at Manny for his lackadaisacal play.

I strongly believe that LT success for a GM is not an issue of luck or happenstance or wow, we struck gold kind of thing. Like any big organizational decisions, a GM has to rely on quality information from scouts and organizational guys and also has to cultivate a good reputation among the other GMs- as being a stand up person to deal with.

The only thing that has me concerned about last night’s game was Mariano being used for 5 outs. Only 26 pitches, but still.

  124. Steve

This is ridiculous. Headhunting is always wrong. Throwing at a guy is one thing, but headhunting can end a career or kill a person.

That being said, Joba isn’t in Youk’s head… Youk is in Joba’s head.

Youkilis is a great hitter. Plus he leans over the plate like Jeter. It’s no surprise that Joba would be a little wild when trying to be cautious. I’d freak out if I were Youk as well. But again, when you lean over the plate to steal the outside pitch, you put your self at risk to the inside pitch.

After what happened last time, and that he is a leaner, Joba is thinking only about not hitting Youk up and in, and sometimes it causes you to throw it in the last place you want. Stuff like that happens to everybody. For example, when you are reading a speech and you mess up a word constantly, you put so much pressure not to say it the wrong way that it becomes a mental block. Or the harder you try not to laugh at something, the harder it actually is NOT to laugh at it. I think that is what is happening here.

“That being said, Joba isn’t in Youk’s head… Youk is in Joba’s head.”

Quite the contrary, you think when Youk comes up to bat, Joba is thinking “oh know, hope I don’t hit him in the head, better know throw inside”

  128. Buddy Biancalana

    *not*

  129. #9

If Youkilis had got hit - at least he would have finally got on base last night.

  130. Y's Guy

i know traded players have a few days to report but often report immediately for work. apparently as of game end last night, it wasnt an official deal pending medical stuff.

    my questions are:

when will the trade be official
    and
is is possible either or both will be available for today’s game
    and
what roster moves do the yankees make to make room for them?

  131. Buddy Biancalana

    Doreen-

You have to Mo in that spot, it’s a must win to begin the series. You can’t worry about not using him today or Sunday. He would pitch today if needed anyway.

  132. Buddy Biancalana

If physicals get done ASAP, Nady & Marte could be here today. They were just in Pitt, so they don’t need to fly too far. It’s a late game, 4pm right?

  133. Fran

Joba is defintely in the Red Sox head. Varitek said after the game that the Sox were going to have a meeting about what to do about Joba. Obviously there is nothing they can do to Joba, but it shows that he is on their minds.

  134. RhapsodyInBlue

The beauty of the entire episode between Joba and Youk is, that if Youk wanted to respond in kind, with class and dignity, he would have with a bid hit, instead to further embarass himself he stuck out, walking back to the dugout muttering to himself..

I’ve been waiting for a Yankee pitcher like Joba to come along for quite awhile.

  135. Y's Guy

you think veritek is gonna invite manny to his big meeting about what to do with the yankees?

  136. YankeeVIP

i dont remember the timing when the yanks pulled the trigger, but i wonder if Cash was sitting there and when he saw brett strike out again, he pulled the trigger.

  137. PittsburghYankeeFan

    Bronx Jeers:

Interesting, isn’t it, that they so quickly changed it from a hit to an error? Same thing with the NESN announcers.

Do they have a home and visitor’s fielding % at Fenway? How does it compare to other parks?

Just asking…the kind of questions that you ask when a team has a home winning % so out of whack with its away winning % and management that has a checkered past history with this and other clubs…

    Just asking…

  138. yanksince57-aceves/mccutchen/next?

are the trenton starters being replaced by horne and an a callup?

  139. Buddy Biancalana

I read if Manny doesn’t play today he will be suspended. His MRI came out clean, so there is no “knee injury” What a joker!

  140. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!)

I couldn’t help but laugh a bit when I saw that Varitek said that they would meet to determine what to do about Joba.

What can they possibly do- file a petition to make him bat? I don’t think that Joba is just in Youkilis’s head. With comments like those from Varitek, I think that Joba has found his way into the heads of a few other Red Sox hitters.

That will only enhance the advantage that Joba has over them, not only the multi-pitch arsenal, but now a degree of intimidation. These guys now have allowed other things to creep into their minds besides just hitting the ball. You must have a clear head when you’re at the plate. You can’t hit when you are mad or intimidated. As long as this transpires, advantage Joba. :)

  141. RSM

“some players come along and transcend their numbers no matter how great their numbers are, mantle was like that. jeter. and now joba”

    Randy,
    Great quote.

  142. Y's Guy

big meeting in the fens, called by tek to deal with the yankees scaring youkilis:

whiner: hey he almost him me in the head, if it hadnt hit my bat, it would have missed me altogether!

tek: something’g gotta be done, we gotta all stick together here!

(commotion as in walks manny 45 minutes late)

manny: coco, what up bro? que pasa miguel? so how come nobody tol me about this meeting guys?

papi:we wasnt sure you knee could handle it bro!

manny: whats i all about anyway, youk, you get another bad called strike and blow up the dugout again?

    youk: *$%^ you @$#^#$%%*&

tek: hey hey now, we gotta stick together here, the yankees are pounding us here.

manny: hey way everybody looking at me, my knee still hurts!

  143. Yankee Lover

I like what Joba is doing, I just think he should keep it away from the guys head. Its nice to see the tables turn as I was sick of watching Pedro and crew plunk our guys over the years. I`d like to see Youk out of it and see Manny and Papi in his place.
I love the trade, but why in the world would the pirates trade one of their best players when he is still under contract through next year? (Nady) Why trade him? Its different if he was in the last year of his contract and they thought they could not sign him.
Regarding Marte, wasnt he closing because the Pirates closer was hurt? Why would they trade him?
    Any thoughts?

  145. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

If the Crock Sox plan to retaliate, it won’t be today as Wakefield’s fastest pitch is probably in the mid 80’s. Look for it if Papelsmear gets in the game or maybe tomorrow with Lester (if he goes deep into the game and has a lead).

  146. Steve

Hey Pete, any update on the status of our new arrivals?

  147. Global Warming

“one thing about last night’s game that struck me was how easy lowell was able to cover the outside part of the plate with mo.

he did this by diving out there as the pitch came in. mo tried to counter the leaning in by finally throwing a low inside pitch which didn’t have much effect on lowell.

the called third strike looked bad because lowell was moving so much up on the plate. good for the ump to call the strike. but i hate to see it depend on that. lowell was up there fouling off pitches because he was taking over too much of the plate.

mo needs to recapture that part of the plate from the red sox. he really should have gone up and in to lowell instead of low and in. the problem is that with the warning he had to be careful, but still he can’t just let lowell foul pitch after pitch off.

this seems a minor point because the yankees won , but things could have easily went the other way. . i think mo needs to slowly push the red sox back off the plate with some message pitches. he’s got the 4 seam buzz saw that won’t hit them. it’s time to use it so there’s no more 9 pitch at bats from diving in red sox hitters.”

Don’t question the best of all time. He knows what he’s doing.

  148. Doreen

    Buddy -

I agree it was the move to make for last night, bringing Mo in, because you wanted to assure the team of at least one win. It just always makes me a little nervous when Mo has to go more than 1 inning. :)

  149. Y's Guy

pirates are going nowhere and thier farm system was cleaned out by the last g.m. this trade was to restock thier minors.

im happy with the trade, but lets not lose sight of the fact that alot of yankees people think ohlendorf is gonna be good and up until may, tabata was consiered our best or next best prospect. we gave talent to get talent here, this was no steal.

there was apparently some discussion among the pirates people about keeping everyone and making a run at .500, but apparently they came to thier senses and realized that nobody cares if you ended up 6 games over or under .500 when you never contended for anything.

  150. G13

per mlbtr- mariners asked about Ajax in a washburn deal. haha no chance. with tabata being traded ajax is going nowhere especially for a 4th starter. i guess seattle had to at least ask after giving away sherrill and adam jones for bedard

  151. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Wait, Fairytek we’ll see what we’ll do about Joba? Are they going to jump him? What the heck is that?

And if Kevin didn’t like where the pitch was, why didn’t he charge the mound? He stood there crying like a baby waiting for someone to come to his rescue. Jose didn’t even have to hold him back.

I don’t think Joba was throwing at him, as Joe said it would be crazy to put the lead off hitter in the 7th inning with a 1 run lead.

That said I am happy that we finally have a pitcher that will stand up for his players. Our hitters have had targets on their backs for far to long.

And wasn’t it funny how joshy runs to the top step of the dugout. what a jerk.

  152. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

g13 they should take a bag of balls for the salary dump.

  153. Doreen

Re: Last inning last night, Lowell vs. JD Drew. My husband said the at bats showed the difference between a seasoned veteran vs. Mariano (Lowell) and a relative new-comer (Drew). Lowell battled and Drew was overmatched.

  154. Doreen

(I couldn’t watch the last inning - I’m too nervous - I almost never do in a close, close game against the Sox.)

  155. G13

haha maybe we can trade some bats to seattle for washburn. what was that minor league trade?

  156. pat

    Morning All

Taking a 1-0 win last night was big. Never know what to expect when facing a knuckleballer or with Sir Sid on the mound Sunday.

Heading out for the day but don’t let Timmy and Joe (or Jack as Yogi calls him) make you too insane today. That’s what mute buttons were invented for.

    Go Andy, Go Yanks!!!

  157. Dennis

some 1 call in to “mike and the puppy dog” show and ask why joba should be be wasted for 7 shutout innings when he can pitch one inning every 3 days. BTW I read that that “genius” fatcessa said joba is an “Adequate” starter, and the moron still wants Arroyo lol.

  158. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    New package; per sweeeny

Tabata olendorf. jeff karstens and jeff McCutchen

Not liking McCutchen in the deal. :(

  159. Global Warming

“up until may, tabata was consiered our best or next best prospect”

You mean may of 07 right?

Tabata hasn’t had a good season since 06.

  160. Cheesyhoboe

Ugh, we gave up McCutchen? Damn it.

  161. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I thought McCutchen would be up at some point this year or next year.

  162. #9

    “jeff McCutchen”

    Just heard - damn…

  163. Astorian

    I don’t like losing McCutchen.

  164. Global Warming

    “New package; per sweeeny

Tabata olendorf. jeff karstens and jeff McCutchen

Huh, when and where did you hear that?

  165. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

#9- I wrote it wrong. Dan Mccutchen.

  166. #9

“Huh, when and where did you hear that?”

    Sweeny on WFAN

  167. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Global Sweeney was just on WFAN. Just announced that those are the names he heard this morning.

  168. Doris From Rego Park

Joel Sherman is reporting it as well

  169. Doris From Rego Park

    http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2008/07/mccutchen_karst.html

  170. Doris From Rego Park

my guess is that the washburn deal must be close

  171. CB

Joel Sherman is also reporting the same thing - Tabata, Ohlendorf then McCutchen and Karstens.

Let’s see how this plays out. Coke was pulled from the game yesterday.

Karstens was never going to help them and is burning a 40 man roster spot.

Losing McCutchen does hurt if true - but it also makes it more of a “fair trade.”

I like McCutchen and think he’ll have a nice career. But I don’t think he was ever going to be good enough to crack the yankees rotation. Given how good the bull pen looks - they can absorb his loss.

  172. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Wait something isn’t right here. Coke was pulled from the game last night. Is there another deal in the works, or is someone pulling Sweeneys leg?

  173. vinny-b

well, now i no longer feel sorry for the Pirates. They received a very fair deal.

was it still a good trade? Yes.

    was it a steal? Nope.

    I value McCutcheon over Kennedy.

  174. Cheesyhoboe

McCutchen shouldn’t have just been a throw-in… damn.

  175. Brian

So how many games will Joba get suspended?

I hope Yankees hitters are wearing extra body guards today.

  176. S.A.- I still believe in this team

Wait, the prospects are different? We lost McCutchen? :(

Well, at least we have Tabata still

  177. Global Warming

Who knew we’d get something for Karstens! Woohoo

    Keeping Kontos makes me happy.

  178. S.A.- I still believe in this team

Scratch that Tabata comment-forgot he was still in the deal.

    Blah..it’s a fair deal

  179. trisha - still supporting Farnsy like crazy!

    wahwahwahwah

    youkilis is a whiner

    dont emulate him.

Only if you promise to stop whining about people whining about people whining!

    ;)

  180. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I just emailed the Trenton Thunder writer, something isn’t right now. Coke was pulled from the game under orders from the yankees. I don’t get this.

  181. just sayin...

so when pete posted this in his game post last night:

“8:09 p.m.: THE YANKEES HAVE MADE A TRADE:

OF Xavier Nady and LHP Damaso Marte from Pittsburgh for OF Jose Tabata, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, LHP Phil Coke and RHP George Kontos.” he was wrong.

this isnt a big deal to me but pete has made such a big deal about joe g’s ‘misleading’ the press about posada’s injury that it bears some scrutiny.

did someone lie to you pete? did you lie to us?

  182. vinny-b

Buster Onley had talked last night, of GM’s complaining/shocked, of the Yankees only having to give up: Tabata/Olend/Kontos/Coke. As they couldn’t belive it.

what happened? The the pirates GM (does he even have any experience) come back to Cashman, and tell him he needs to get more talent back, AFTER the
