Will Manny be Manny today?
Reports here in Boston indicate that the Red Sox will put Manny Ramirez in the lineup and if he asks out, he will be disciplined by the team. That could mean a suspension.
The general belief is that Manny is jaking his injury. The team had MRIs taken on both of knees yesterday before the game and made it a point to announce they were negative.
Trying to decide whether a player is faking an injury is tricky business, especially a guy like Ramirez. But the populace seems to have had it with Manny this time.
If he bags out today, it could be bloodier than The Departed.

Manny is really trying to get in the good graces of the Yankees. LOL
This is a huge story here in Boston. I was in the car for an hour today listening to Boston Sports radio and it’s all they talked about.
Almost every caller wanted to talk about Manny. Hardly anyone mentioned the pitchers duel last night or Joba and Youk.. Crazy stuff.
I hope Manny purposely messes up like against Mo that time.
they’ve excused everything as ‘Manny being Manny’, so he keeps on pushing the limits.
great hitter; but i would never want him on the Yankees, his non-hustling, etc, disgusts me as a baseball fan.
Sounds great to me. I would love to Manny on the bench.
Now if Cashman can pull off the Igaw-Washburn trade, he should be GM of the year.
We actually found people who want Karstens and Igawa!
surprise, surprise… His own manager and front office think he’s faking to the point where they’re going to force him to play.
Yeah, I was way off in my assumption the other day that he was faking an injury immediately prior to one of the biggest series of the year….
Manny, please please beg out today..if you like, we’ll send Enrique Wilson to meet you at the bar across the street..
They keep on saying on the FAN that Nady is signed for next year, but Cot’s indicates he is not.
Anybody know which is true – I would guess that Cot’s is (they already have him on the Yankees)
Will Omar get ridden out of NY if he tries to sign ManRam in the off season?
I love how Manny “purposely” struck out against mariano last time. Those were 3 pitches he was not touching even if he wanted to
i see this as the red sox backing down. if they really wanted to bring this to a head, they’d leave him out of the lineup and when he asks back in they say no we got guys who want to play. by putting him in the lineup, they are hoping he will just play and shut up, and then they will have enabled manny to be manny again without any repurcussions.
i wonder how the rest of the sox feel about a deserter being allowed back into the lineup without any punishment.
Any chance at all that the Red Sox try to trade him now?
“They keep on saying on the FAN that Nady is signed for next year, but Cot’s indicates he is not.”
He’s got one more year of being arbitration eligible. So in effect even though he’s not technically signed for next year he is under yankees control for another year.
His contract comes up as a one year deal on Cot’s because he went to arbitration last year with the Bucs.
He’ll be a free agent eligible after the 2009 season.
Chris NY:
Remember a few years ago during a NY/Boston series where Manny begged out hurt from and they found him in a hotel bar?
From what i have seen Nady signed a 1 year deal before the season
What is up with this? Are they burping Youkilis?
“MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement instructs that clubhouses be open 3 1/2 hours before gametime (first pitch this afternoon scheduled for 3:55 p.m.), but Sox PR director John Blake just came by and said he has been instructed to keep the clubhouse closed for the time being. Blake did not specify a reason for the delay.”
from boston.com
Thanks CB – you da man!
Nady and Marte will both be under the Yanks control next season.
They can put him into the lineup, but they can’t swing the bat for him. Here’s hoping that he doesn’t.
Nady is under team control next year, he is arbitration eligible. He is making 3.5 this year and will get an increase. Marte has a 6 million option for next year with a small boyout.
I assume this means bye bye Bobby and Hello Texeira.
Damon, Matsui, Melky and Nady all under contract for next year.
Waht I want to know is when are these guys joining the team?
Any chance at all that the Red Sox try to trade him now?
I think they’ve been trying to do that… for years.
If anyone is interested here is a little something I put together breaking down the Yankees pitching since the ASG.
It is broken down by the bullpen and starters, and pitcher-by-pitcher.

TK – maybe they are having the big meeting about what to do to Joba.
Lets hope Manny acts like Manny in the field and rolls on top of a couple balls.
Yessssssss!
I love it when the Beaneaters go nuts with their self absorption. Something’s always wrong and somebody’s always at fault. It’ll never be as good as the old days of course (“Nineteen Eighteen”)but this is still good.
The CB post at 12:45 was not me.
I love when “Manny being Manny” makes redsux fans head explode PRICELESS!!!!!
thats the killer here, the trade deadline. if it wasnt next week, they probably would have just put manny on the dl for 15 days and moved on, but they would love to trade him for something and putting him on the d.l. would make that alot harder. so they have to keep him on the 25-man and when he doesnt feel like playing the team has to go out one man short, not to mention that the one man is thier best hitter.
what a lowlife!
No Question manny is a met either by the deadline or by december…AND I LOVE IT from a yankee standpoint
Let Manny Be Moany.
“TK – maybe they are having the big meeting about what to do to Joba.”
That and Manny – I wonder who gets plunked today. The obvious choice is A-Rod (just because they seem to enjoy sticking it to him)
The problem is that Wakefield’s ‘heater’ is low 80′s if that. It wouldn’t be sporting if the plunked Yankee giggles after being buzzed.
Great, now there is a CB impersonator. Dude, get a life!
sounds like Manny is on his way to becoming departed.
If Manny is in the lineup today it will be interesting to observe how the Fenway fans react. My bet is that he plays, gets a hit and lives another day to spit on their shoes. All the while, he’ll get cheered wildly lol

Nady and Marte will both be under the Yanks control next season.
Hey man don’t do that. CB is respected here and your a few posts from getting an IP address ban.
What would they need to get for Manny? Would they do it for prospects? Or maybe some sort of 3 way deal where they get a good major league hitter back from a team that will take prospects…
“That could mean a suspension”
Suspended for a few games without pay, so what for a zillionaire like Manny.
Hey Brandon –
Any idea if Manny will be in the lineup today?
Theo needs to trade him for Fernando Martinez ASAP, then put together a package for Holliday.
im sure the sox would demand fmart at first and the mets would counter with a carp neise heilman and other deal
I was thinking something like that. But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t the Mets trade Fernando Martinez for Holliday and forget about Manny. Or do the Mets not have the other parts to make that work?
The sox may be more wanting to give up manny than the rox gving of holliday at this point which is unreal
Thanks, Dan!
That was a great breakdown.
I honestly believe Manny is in a lot more serious trouble than the Sox are willing to disclose to the media.
Manny is a stubborn, stubborn player. At this point of the season he is pulling the old ‘let’s see what this team has got without me’ move to, in his head, spark extension talks with his blood-sucking agent Boras.
Nothing would please me more than to see him in the lineup sticking it to the Sox by watching pitches zip by him right down the middle.
I guess they are discussing how to ‘handle’ Joba. I think MLB should look into Jasons comments re: Joba.

The lineup was just posted, and Manny Ramirez is in it. Complete lineup coming in a minute.

I can’t wait to hear what all those Boston fans who always say “Manny being Manny” think about this situation if he sits out today.
Any idea if Manny will be in the lineup today?
Very doubtful he’s trying to make a point to Red Sox management and will not budge unless he feels like playing. My guess you’ll see him play today since he risks losing alot of money. (I do have to say this it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t play) he’ll put the Sox on national t.v. alert…can you imagine the teams that find out Manny may demand out, I’ll say this if he sits today expect him to be traded before the deadline.
Hey, if it keeps Sidney Ponson from pitching to Manny, I’m all for it.
i think Jete gets plunked today.
casey blake traded to dodgers for catcher carlos santana and jonathan meloan
jinx matt
This gives a lot more teeth to the stuff I was saying last night about hearing on WEEI about Manny and Boras setting all of this up to tick off the Sux organization and get them to trade him or make sure he didn’t return to the Sux.
The “beauty” in it is that they are probably figuring there a ton of teams that don’t mind Manny being Manny and will thrill to the opportunity to get him – so he can just keep acting up and make sure the Sux want him to go bye bye – and another club will offer a long-term deal because the Sux will want to make sure they still get their “value” for him.
I think what it really means is that Manny realizes there is no long-term deal coming to him from the Sux and he needs to smokescreen the whole thing to play down the aspect that maybe he just doesn’t deserve a long-term deal from any team at this point in his career – but by making it seem like he’s just acting up the Sux will try to present him in the most favorable light and try to get a ton of money for him in the process, something they themselves are not willing to do because he just isn’t worth a long-term contract!
Crafy Boras.
“The lineup was just posted, and Manny Ramirez is in it. Complete lineup coming in a minute.â€
Correction he was penciled in, he has not decided to play yet.
Maybe I should trade for the Manny Ramirez fellow. Andruw Jones for Man-Ram? Sounds delicious to me.
“My bet is that he plays, gets a hit and lives another day to spit on their shoes. All the while, he’ll get cheered wildly lol”
Absolutely agree.
* crafty Boras
No more Manny? The good news never ends!
“Yankees aren’t even talking to the Reds about Arroyo” – Dan Graziano
So thank John Heyman for floating that rumor.
“Correction he was penciled in, he has not decided to play yet.”
That is exactly what happened yesterday – he was in the line-up and then scratched.
Oy…I love Yankee baseball…
Maybe I should trade for the Manny Ramirez fellow. Andruw Jones for Man-Ram? Sounds delicious to me.
It would be the best trade you ever made Ned (and God knows you need it) but If he goes in a trade Philly for Pat Burrell would make more sense (don’t you think ?)
backaccord, the Dodgers are close to acquiring him. it’s not offical yet.
hehe…If I had a million dollars, I’d hire Manny….make him get a haircut ala Yankee dress code….and FIRE ‘HIM!
Hi Pete,
You have not posted the Journal News articles entry today
edyanks, its on yahoo mlb home page as a done deal..
sox lineup today
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. Coco Crisp, CF
9. Kevin Cash, C
– Tim Wakefield, SP
I hope Boras gets smoked again trying to be a hero.
Look what happened last time he was ‘crafty.’
blackaccord again yesterday he staged a protest no one knows if he’ll play today, it depends on him.
No offense to a man who has had a great great season – but I am very happy that Pettitte is on the mound today and not Moose.
Pettitte will be able to handle any situation that needs to be handled and has enough dog in him to retaliate if that is what is called for.
I am a big Moose fan – but he is not a wartime consigliere!
Just catching up.
1. Can’t believe people are lamenting the loss of Karstens. Good kid, decent pitcher, but no future in the Bronx. Put it in perspective, Marte is replacing him on the 40-man.
2. Marc, the series doesn’t begin until Jeter gets plunked.
3. LOL @ Red Sox scanning both knees. Like Manny doesn’t know which is right and which is left. Did they scan his head to see what’s going on there? No need to scan his you know whats, we know he’s got those.
4. Is there a closed door mtg in the Sox clubhouse? Discussing Manny or discussing Joba.
5. I kind of like this win streak. It’d be nice to keep it going, the Brewers streak was broken last night. Pettitte has horrible numbers against the Sox.
Manny is definitely jerking the Sux around. He’s probably in disbelief that he didn’t get traded as soon as he whacked Pukeface Pukelisp. So then he had to up the ante and knock down the 67-year-old travelling secretary. Still no trade! Ohmygosh the trade deadline is looming! So howsabout we walk up to Francoma in Seattle and announce we won’t be playing? Damn damn damn, he went for it! Now what Bobby Boras Pickett? I got it Manny! Refuse to play in the Yankee series and say your knee is bothering you, and then we’ll have an MRI done and and everyone will see that there’s nothing wrong with your knees, and the Sux big boys will really start making phone calls.
And oh yeah, don’t worry if they suspend you for a few games. You have a few more grills you can sell on eBay!
WHAT A FREAKIN RIOT!!!!!
trisha,
Welcome back! Where’d you go? Blogging rehab?
Deal is finalized Nady and Marte are on thier way to Boston as of right now
I could see Nady being in the lineup today.
Anybody know how trades work with regards to the roster moves? Specifically, since the trade is finalized, do the Yankees have to add Nady to the roster before today’s game? What if he doesn’t make it for the start, does that mean Christian starts out there?
Brandon,
Will they use a helicopter and police escort a la Mirabelli?
Deal is finalized Nady and Marte are on thier way to Boston as of right now
any word on the roster moves? I seriously hope Hawkins gets DFAed and Nady takes #22 which he wore through out his career.
Rasner to change number as well?
red sox have NO BALLS.
Brandon,
Will they use a helicopter and police escort a la Mirabelli?
These are the Yankees we use time machines and jets
“Will they use a helicopter and police escort a la Mirabelli?”
Mel –
I wouldn’t be surprised if they blew up a bridge to keep them from the game!
Think Nady and Marte will be ready to play today?
ManRam is playing – boo!
“Manny Ramirez just walked through the clubhouse. He didn’t stop to talk to reporters, but without being asked a question, the Sox left fielder addressed a group of media members on his way by.
“Don’t worry about it,” Ramirez said. “I’m not going to talk. I’m going to play. That’s it.”
Ramirez, penciled into this afternoon’s lineup, was then asked if he would definitely be playing today.
“Check the lineup,” he said. “I’m in the lineup.”
“
Manny to the Mets.
Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
And it won’t be for Fernando Martinez. The Mets will trade Heilman or Sanchez (probably Heilman) for him plus that Niese kid and other assorted flotsam.
any word on the roster moves?
Nope.
I seriously hope Hawkins gets DFAed and Nady takes #22 which he wore through out his career.
Nooooooooooooo we can’t lose Hawk.
Yahoo is reporting that Manny’s time in Boston might soon be over.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ru.....=mlb,96129
Brandon,
If they had a time machine, they’d go back and not let Pettitte go to Texas!
Casey Blake to Dodgers. Cleveland gets a minor league catcher, pitching prospect, and cash per ESPN. Rays were one of the teams that wanted Blake. Avaialable bats are running out…
oh man, we have a fake “V” and now a fake “CB”
Anyway, I think I’d prefer to have a “protesting” Manny in the line-up then out of it. He’ll strike out looking 3 times, Youk will say something, then we can see a “Major Leagues 2″ style brawl!!
It looks like Hays is trying to hit Vaughn, and why not, everyone else in the league does!!
G Love I was more of the thinking Philly will not allow that, they’d gladly swap Pat the bat for Manny.
Brandon, yeah we could lose Hawk. lol Giese is our true long man.
Now all Cashman has to do is get a starting pitcher to Fenway by tomorrow. So we don’t have to watch Ponson get torched in 2 innings. Maybe if Moose gives him the whole ice cream freezer then he will pitch a shut out.
No NTC for Manny?
I wonder how big of a distraction this Manny stuff is to the rest of the team.
DMan,
They’ve got other things to worry about. Joba in their face and the Yankees in the rear view mirror.
Manny has a full ntc – 10 and 5.
The difference between A-Rod and Manny:
Alex doesn’t try to be a distraction.
TK,
That’s right. Thanks.
What a soap opera. It could get really nasty.
DFA him and the Yankees can pick him up. The MRI’s were clean, right?
Well, we will see if Manny plays today. Manny being Manny…
About the change in the trade, some sources said that it is because after Ohlendorf and Tabata passed physicals, the Pirates could then choose the other two off a list. So, I guess their mind changed after that. Hopefully Nady and Marte could play today because if the Pirates could manage to get physicals for Ohly and Tabata already, I am sure the Yanks could do the same for Nady and Marte and have them in Boston today. Even if they aren’t there at start time, Christian could start and Nady put in later and Marte shouldn’t have to pitch until the 7th or 8th inning.
“Yankees aren’t even talking to the Reds about Arroyo†– Dan Graziano
You hear that? It’s the screams of Mike Francesa going “No! Bring me Arroyo!”
Brandon, yeah we could lose Hawk. lol Giese is our true long man.
But then who would pitch the 8th inning
This is kinda a random question that I thought of. When a player gets traded, he has to learn all the signals. Also, when a pitcher gets traded, he has to learn the pitching signals. Does every time a pitcher or player gets traded, do they create new signs or something? Anybody know what happens regarding signs?
Delcarmen looked like he might be injured last night.
Mnny will play look at his numbers against Andy.
Also as I said last night as a Phillies fan I will GLADLY take Manny for Pat the Bat
Mel -
That was really funny! I like that, blogging rehab.
No I just went back to my other Yankee home, where there is a lot less freneticism. Without reliving the entire moment, the day that someone chides a Yankee fan for dumping on the Sux, well that’s a day that someone needs blogging rehab – and it isn’t the fan being chided!!!
This is a much happier place when the Yankees are winning, yes? Anyway I figured I’d come around for the Sux games, when nobody should be getting their panties in a bunch if someone trashes the Sux!
I don’t understand why one of our guys has to get plunked when we didn’t even hit their guy.
When Joba nails Youkilis in the chin, then they have a right to hit one of our guys.
Until they, they are cry babies.
I think Mo would have pitched much further inside last night vs. Lowell if there wasn’t a warning. Lowell was basically standing on the plate to hit Mo’s outside cutter.
no one knows the line up?
I have skimmed the posts and seen a few questions about Nady playing today.
Any definitive answers on that?
Omar is all about the flashy moves, Manny being a NY guy in citi-field and taking attention away from the Yankees will be very tempting for him.
And I’m sure he would trade F-Mart for Holliday, but Rockies probably don’t do that.
This is just my opinion, but how can anyone be worried about Ponson after watching what he has done since he came here (except for a bad start against his former team?) Hasn’t he earned the right to start a game with the trust of the fans?
But then who would pitch the 8th inning
I’m guessing Marte would immediately be sloted to that role.
I’m actually loving the fact that the Yanks took Nady away from the Mets, and the Dodgers took Blake. Now I’m seriously hoping for other teams to take away Bay and Ibanez from the Mets’ wishlist.
G Love, while I agree with you about our guy getting plunked, the Sux have never appeared to be about rational baseball when it comes to preferring fisticuffs. Look what that little baby Crisp did when Tampa retaliated for something the Sux did the day before?
I fully expect something to happen to one of our guys. I’ll be pleased if it doesn’t but surprised also. The Sux might be thinking that hitting a Yankee player will be what it takes for them to get fired up enough to win the game.
Ed, LAtroy is lights out in blowouts.
I think the lineup looks like this…
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Arod 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Just speculation, but thats what it likely will be considering Nady and Marte will be in uniform….
Trisha: Ponson’s been lucky more than good. The Yankees are scoring 10 runs a start for him. Hard to lose when that happens.
I hope the Yanks can ride his starts as long as they can, but with his WHIP, he’s flirting with disaster.
JR Yankees

I hope Boras gets smoked again trying to be a hero.
Look what happened last time he was ‘crafty.’
I love that people still think Boras was a loser in the A Rod charade last year. A Rod signed for $300 million! Who cares if A-rod isn’t talking to you (though I’m not even sure I believe that)?? You just made $30 or $40 million.
Boras is happy to take the heat for A-rod’s greed. He’ll happily take the heat for Manny and laugh all the way to the bank if the Sox don’t pick up his option.
The Yanks should trade for Manny. Give them Gardner and Kennedy.
Brandon (I’m sorry if that was sarcasm and this post is pointless) but did you see the Minnesota game.. where he almost blew a 5 RUN LEAD… and we had to bring in MO?
The Yankees announced they have outrighted Kei Igawa to the minors. It means every team passed on him on waivers and the Yankees still have to pay him (his five-year, $20 million deal runs through 2011).
http://www.nj.com/yankees/
**groan**
G Love,
Mo was pitching away from Lowell because Lowell is a dead pull hitter, and if he gets lucky and hits a reasonably deep pop fly than the Yanks would have lost with the Monster so close in left. Mo was pitching to the situation and doing it masterfully.
well del Carmen left yseterdays game with a forearm strain and Aardsma is on the DL. So don’t expect it from those two, however your thinking is probably correct. If this game is lopsided either way, one of the yankkes gets plunked by a second tier reliever. Although i wouldnt put it past Paplebum.
Is there any official word yet on Kennedy pitching tomorrow? According to the Yankees website Rasner is pitching monday and tomorrow is TBA; and one of the ESPN-types this morning said something about Kennedy’s return being ‘imminent.’
I’d love to see Gardner and Papelbon in the same club house…
This is kinda a random question that I thought of. When a player gets traded, he has to learn all the signals. Also, when a pitcher gets traded, he has to learn the pitching signals. Does every time a pitcher or player gets traded, do they create new signs or something? Anybody know what happens regarding signs?
Anybody know?
seems like something SJ44 would answer better than anyone else
They go over the signals and indicators with all the new guys.
SamVA he wasn’t ready.
I hope the Yanks can ride his starts as long as they can, but with his WHIP, he’s flirting with disaster.
Ponson’s “get out of trouble” card is set soon to expire. Boston definitely had been taking notes and of course will make Ponson pay. I seriously hope Cashman and Girardi will consider switching Ponson to someone else.
I was hoping Manny would pinch hit last night against Mo and take another 3 pitches right down the middle. I would’ve liked to have seen how Fenway would take that. This is why I wouldn’t want Manny on my team. He would pull this same kind of crap all the time.
yea, Phil but if a player is traded to a team that will vs. the old team, can’t he tell all the signals or what?
Omar Minaya is salivating at the thought that Manny could be available either by 7/31 or when his options of 2009-2010 are not picked up by the Sockies.
Scott Boras will snap his fingers and the Wilpons will be ready with greenbacks in hand.
Bernard: That’s really interesting. No Ponson?
Did they trade for a starter?
According to the Globe’s Amalie Benjamin, Manny said he’ll play today
http://www.boston.com/sports/b....._worr.html
no way they are bringing up Kennedy to pitch tomorrow, it will be Chase Wright all over again. The next pitcher to get a chance will be Aceves, but I think Ponson and Rasner are both pitching well knowing their jobs are on the line.
Are you really arguing to keep on Hawkins? I would much rather have Giese be a blow-out sort of pitcher than him… I’m not even going to argue with you about this… Hawkins is straight awful this year. I don’t see any reason to waste a spot in the pen with him… But seeing as neither of us will ultimately make that decision then I guess it does not matter what we think.
trisha,
No, you’re not alone.
People just like to say he’s going to implode so they can be right. Rather than cheer for the guy because we need him.

Nady has arrived to Boston, LATROY HAWKINS HAS BEEN DFA
Off topic:
Jennifer – (Or anyone else)
You have been to Toronto, no? We’re going in a couple of weeks and I’m starting to look restaurants. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Rebecca I understand what you’re saying but the practical question is this (with reference to Captain’s post). Do you sit down a pitcher who has been effective and pull someone else in because you fear he will not win the game? The answer of course is no.
My theory is always that someone who has been effective will continue to be effective and I never buy problems by worrying that the person won’t be. Is it possible that Ponson self destructs tomorrow? Sure. Andy could self destruct today. It can happen to all pitchers at some point. But nothing that has happened with Ponson makes me fear that tomorrow’s outing will be a disaster (again, to the extent that CaptainsCorner seemed to be worried, where you actually hope to get another starter to start the game.)
i saw the ssox lineup and manny is in there
Ponson out over Rasner? Maybe moose back on Sunday on his regular rest?
Nady has arrived to Boston, LATROY HAWKINS HAS BEEN DFA
YES, about time Hawkins disappear from the Yanks bullpen.
gardner sent down hawkins released as per wfan
Not sure why they DFA’d Hawkins. He hasn’t been good, but one would think he could be traded to a team like the Brewers in hopes that he could do something for them like what he did for the Rockies last year. Maybe he’ll still be traded. It’s hard to see a reliever just straight up released, even if he wasn’t very good.
Nady in starting line up they didnt say anything about Marte arriving yet though
Brandon: Hanukah in July?!
Trisha: Maybe nothing this year, but the last time Sidney pitched in Boston it wasn’t pretty It’s living dangerously.
wooohooo! Nady hopefully starts today… am I allowed to wish he goes 4-4 with 2 HR and 7 RBI?
Peace out Latroy it was nice watching you clean up…
Hawkins DFA? Well, I was wrong about that.
mlb.com also showing TBA on Sunday. I hope it’s nothing serious with Ponson. Maybe they’re expecting him to be hungover..
sorry that would be moose on 3 days rest
Bigjf when a player is DFA’d they have a few days to trade him
I know LaTroy hasn’t been wonderful, but I still feel bad for the guy. He seemed like a good guy, and he went through all the junk at the beginning of the season because of his uni number. Just seemed like it didn’t get off to the greatest of starts. However, I understand that’s baseball. Comings and goings, hellos and goodbyes. And hopefully along the way the team you like gets better and the people who leave find a more comfortable place.
“Maybe they’re expecting him to be hungover..”
Or maybe he gave up drinking… which caused him to become so stressed out that he also quit pitching…
Your reason makes more sense though =)
http://www.nj.com/yankees/
Hanukah in July.
Signs usually change, especially the indicators, when a player is traded and is facing his former team.
Manny is looking for a contract extension. The Sox can’t trade him. He’s a 10 and 5 guy and has to approve any deal. Meaning, he will go where he wants to go, not where the Red Sox may want to send him.
The Sox have 2 team options on his contract after this season.
What Manny is doing is hoping for a “psycho discharge”. He would prefer the Red Sox not pick up his option, so he becomes a free agent, if they are unwilling to do a longer term deal.
The problem he runs is ticking off his own clubhouse. He’s always been a popular guy with the majority of his teammates.
If he keeps pulling this stuff, he runs the risk of blowing up the clubhouse.
Everybody knows he packed it in the last 6 weeks of the season in 2006. He wasn’t hurt.
Last year, he had an off-season but, a great post-season. All was forgiven.
This year? He’s been out of control and has only recently begun to hit.
Last thing the Red Sox need is this soap opera.
Better them than the Yankees.
I know that, leo. That’s why I said maybe they’ll still trade him. But I’m also seeing some of you saying he was released? Which is it?
Late on this, but how do Kontos and McCutcheon compare?
Hawkins has negative trade value. The only way they move him is in another trade where the other team HAS to take him along with somebody good. Who were they gonna send down today in order to add Marte? Why would you send down somebody useful and keep Hawkins?
its funny how Nady and Marte were playing against the Yanks one week, then the following week, they would be teammates. just like Molina last season.
Sun TBA @ Lester
Mon Guthrie @ Rasner
Tues Cabrera @ Mussina
Wed Burress @ TBA
We better take that series, I’m tired of losing to the Orioles.
Does anyone remember when Eric Hinskie was thrown in this series and had a huge game? I think that was last year at Fenway, actually. He had like three doubles for the Sox.
SJ still think this team should sell and rebuild and trade Cano?
moose is pitching monday as per girardi
When you DFA somebody you have 10 days to trade him before he is outright released.
“Not sure why they DFA’d Hawkins. He hasn’t been good, but one would think he could be traded to a team like the Brewers in hopes that he could do something for them like what he did for the Rockies last year. Maybe he’ll still be traded. It’s hard to see a reliever just straight up released, even if he wasn’t very good.”
THey have ten days to trade or release him. They’ve been shopping him for a while and haven’t had any takers. Maybe they’ll get one now that the reliever market has started to move a bit. It still won’t be for anything interesting.
EricVA- that literally made no sense…
If your question was who did they send down to the farm- Gardner
If your question was why did they DFA Hawkins? I don’t think that needs to be explained..
Bye Bye LaTroy
is Betemit the next one to go? just curious.
More good news.
NY Yankees take Igawa off 40-man roster
by Ed Price/The Star-Ledger
Saturday July 26, 2008, 1:06 PM
Duane Burleson/Associated Press
Yankees pitcher Kei Igawa waits to get the hook against the Detroit Tigers in Detroit in May. The Yankees outrighted the pitcher to the minors Saturday after he got no bites on waivers. The Yankees announced they have outrighted Kei Igawa to the minors. It means every team passed on him on waivers and the Yankees still have to pay him (his five-year, $20 million deal runs through 2011).
Igawa has made two appearances for the Yankees this season and sports an 0-1 record with a 13.50 ERA. He started and took the loss after allowing all six runs in three innings in a 6-5 defeat against Detroit May 9, and pitched a scoreless inning of relief, while allowing two hits, in a 9-0 Yankees win over the Mets at Shea June 27.
For his career, in 16 appearances (13 starts) he has a 2-4 record with a 6.66 ERA, having allowed 89 hits, 15 HRs and 37 walks over 71 2/3 innings.
until I see an official release I will not celebrate Hawkins DFA talk…
If they can get a low level minor league catcher for Hawkins, it would be worth it over just releasing him.
“The only way they move him is in another trade where the other team HAS to take him along with somebody good.”
That’s not entirely true. His contract just isn’t big enough for that. You could probably ship him and some cash off for a AA reliever with mediocre stuff. Of course…the question would be WHY.
Sam,
No, I’m responding to people saying they shouldn’t have DFA’d Hawkins. Some people are saying they should’ve tried to trade him first. I’m saying that you can’t trade Hawkins, and what’s the point of keeping him on the roster.
gayle,
So are they skipping Rasner?
“If they can get a low level minor league catcher for Hawkins, it would be worth it over just releasing him.”
A) that’s actually an organizational strength, with Montero, Romine, Weeks and the draftee from this year that they just signed all in low-A or below.
B) No one would do that.
Kennedy pitched Thursday, so his normal turn would be Tuesday… there’s a guy named Mussina pitching then. I don’t see ow anyone except Ponson goes tomorrow night.
Ed, I don’t think Betemit is going anywhere. He has a very capable bat for a bench player, and he’s not expensive at all. I can live with his defense.
Hawkins is terrible. He’s a mop up man. You can trade him to a NL team.
I bet the Yankees could work a Hawkins/Gagne trade.
:-p
Mel Girardi said he would pitch on Tuesday with an extra day rest they wanted to keep Moose on regular schedule
Eric,
ohh gotcha my bad! Having read your posts in the past I figured it was something like that..
(you making a point not asking dumb questions)
God, the venomous posts towards Hawkins starts.
Ugh.
“is Betemit the next one to go? just curious.”
Then they would have literally no one capable of even pretending to be a middle infielder on the team. Christian? Gardner? It’ll be one of them.
If you jump over to the Daily News blog they talked to a scout who said Coke’s make up is more tailored to pitching in NY as opposed to Mccutcheon. I guess everyone has there own opinions though.
gayle,
Thanks, we all want Moose to be regular.
No word on Sunday starter?
Did I miss something I thought Ponson starts tomorrow
Whozat,
Does Betemit pretend to be a middle infielder? I was under the impression he’s now the official backup to A-Rod.
I’m assuming this has been linked to already, if not…
http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....nteed_out/
Hawkins wasn’t the best performance wise here, but he seemed like a very nice guy. No matter what, I wish him the best.
Rebecca I am hoping that as someone says that they are using Moose instead of Ponson because of regular rest (Moose pitches beautifully at Fenway. I wouldn’t blame Girardi for making that change.)
I would be sorely disappointed in the Yankees if they were in the process of getting rid of Sidney altogether only because he has certainly earned more starts. I looked at his four starts for the Ys and his ER were 0, 7, 1 and 3.
I tuned into SportsCenter to see if I could get any news but a rerun of the ESPYS is on!
Ye, Hawk is a class act… He was very good and worked well with the young guys in the pen. He didnt do his job here, but Hawk will definitly find a Job in the NL. Good Luck Hawk!
Then they would have literally no one capable of even pretending to be a middle infielder on the team. Christian? Gardner? It’ll be one of them.
well Christian was an infielder before becoming an OFer, so maybe have him being a utitly guy who plays for the OF and IF?
Did I miss something I thought Ponson starts tomorrow
Tomorrow’s starting pitcher is now- TBA
Hawkins shouldn’t have taken #21.
His downfall.
One scout familiar with the minor leaguers believes Coke will offer the Yankees more long-term than McCutchen, as the organization has several hard-throwing righthanded relievers and not many lefthanded starters.
“This may actually make the deal better,” the scout told the Daily News, adding that Coke’s fearlessness and makeup are a perfect fit for New York.
gayle,
He was listed as probable all week, but now the major sites are showing TBA.
Again where is all this talk of the rotation coming from. Yesterday on his weekly FAN show he said Moose on MOnday to keep him on regular rest and Rasner on Tuesday no mention of changing Sunday at all.
I have to believe that there is some team who will find value in Hawkins as a reliever. I don’t really care what if anything we get in return as much as I hope he gets to go somewhere where he is valued and gets to pitch.
if Manny gets released, I seriously hope the Yanks will get Manny because of his bat (go ahead and blast me for saying it) and shove it in Boston’s face.
Rasner and Moose are still listed for Monday and Tuesday.
But now tomorrow is in question.
Was another trade made?
“Does Betemit pretend to be a middle infielder? I was under the impression he’s now the official backup to A-Rod.”
He’s the only depth they have on the big league roster at 3B, SS and 2B.
“I would be sorely disappointed in the Yankees if they were in the process of getting rid of Sidney altogether only because he has certainly earned more starts. I looked at his four starts for the Ys and his ER were 0, 7, 1 and 3.”
Trisha, I know you only trust what your eyes tell you and hate all our voodoo stats…but did you see how many baserunners Ponson allowed in all those games? When a pitcher has to get out of a jam in the vast majority of his innings, AND he’s not a big strikeout guy…that’s a really, really good sign that the other shoe is going to drop, and soon. You can get away with giving up lots of hits as long as you don’t walk anyone, minimize extra base hits, and can K guys to keep runners from moving up. You can’t give up lots of hits AND walk a bunch of guys AND rely on your defense to get most of your outs. Not against a team like the Sox.
Even the Yankee website shows a TBA…
You don’t think Sidney is in the mix for Washburn do you…
I think he just didn’t want to go up against Joba.
Wouldn’t Moose’s regular rest be on Monday, not tomorrow?
trisha…I love the way you think !
Moose is a creature of habit. They won’t move him to Sunday.
They are pitching him on Monday to keep him on his normal schedule.
Perhaps something is wrong with Ponson or the sites are just wrong.
If they need an emergency starter, they could just slot Rasner into the Sunday start.
“God, the venomous posts towards Hawkins starts.
Ugh.”
yeh really.. lay off guys. he was a good guy and even took a suspension for us.
“well Christian was an infielder before becoming an OFer, so maybe have him being a utitly guy who plays for the OF and IF?”
1) Guess why he was moved to the OF
2) you can go look up when the last time was that he played in the IF.
Sorry if this was already posted but it said on espn that sources said that the Mariners are working on sending Washburn to the Yanks. If it is true hopefully they can get him there to pitch tomorrow nights game.
Yankees35421,
You thinking Joba’s people talked to Manny’s people in WA Heights?
Yanks and the Mariners will complete the Washburn trade within the next 48 hrs. according to ESPN.
The Yankees continue to talk about Jarrod Washburn and they are likely to complete the deal in the next 48 hours. New York is willing to take Washburn and a lot of the $13 million-$14 million owed to the left-hander, but the deal would essentially be a salary dump, with the Mariners expected to make some sort of financial adjustment.
– Buster Olney –
they already announced Ponson was starting on sunday your looking into the TBA way too much.
Somebody mentioned waayyy before that Aceves is next in line to be called up before Kennedy. I just have to disagree. Kennedy has been very good in AAA the past two weeks and I assume, if there’s a change, he will pitch.
Although…(conspiracy theorists…) it’s Washburn’s scheduled start tomorrow. And they are in Toronto (not Seattle).
Ed-
there’s probably a reason why christian was moved to the outfield
Vidro better be out of that deal. I don’t want him.
Dodgers just got Casey Blake from the Indians. And with that, another door shuts on the Rays.
Olney thinks the Washburn to the Yankees deal will be completed in the next day or two.
It would be strictly a salary dump by the Mariners. Meaning, no significant players going back to Seattle.
Dustin McGowan needs season ending shoulder surgery for the Jays. That’s two excellent young arms needing season ending surgery for the Jays.
Overusing young arms, which the Jays did with both McGowan and Janssen, by flipping them back and forth from the bullpen to the rotation the last couple of years, is the kind of stuff that gets managers and GM’s fired.
Its why there are innings limits on young pitchers.
“This may actually make the deal better,†the scout told the Daily News, adding that Coke’s fearlessness and makeup are a perfect fit for New York.
Coke will never make it to the majors as a Yankee and quite likely won’t make it at all.
3 different sites probably using one automated source.
He was listed and has since been removed. Something is up and it’s unlikely Ponson will pitch on that day. I like Sir Sid and I think the guys do, too. They give him an embarrassing amount of run support.
Are there rules governing these things? Like injury reports? For gambling purposes?
Yanks and the Mariners will complete the Washburn trade within the next 48 hrs. according to ESPN.
you serious? who is part of the trade?
you can go look up when the last time was that he played in the IF.
actually i do wanna find out, but couldnt find it. how would i go check it out?
TBA has been listed for the Yankees all week on yankees.com, I wouldn’t read anything into it except that they don’t update their site very well.
“It would be strictly a salary dump by the Mariners. Meaning, no significant players going back to Seattle.”
SJ –
Do you think we’ll have to take Vidro back? (ugh)
Mel,
I don’t think Ponson’s run support is because they like him. It’s just luck. All the more reason to upgrade (although I’m not convinced Washburn is an upgrade). Please somebody run a comparison of Washburn and Ponson’s stats.
I don’t know if this was mentioned but Nady and Marte made it to the team today and will play.
Nady batting 7th today.
Per WFAN.
Last I could find:
Seattle P-I reported on Thursday that the Yankees want to send Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa to the Mariners, among others, but Seattle has insisted that the AL East team also take designated hitter Jose Vidro in any proposed deal.
Hey Pete-
Is the delay of the lineups because of Nady. Usually you have the lineups hours before first pitch and here we are less than an hour til game time and nothing.
Whats up?
The Yanks won’t take Vidro.
Do we have full line up for today?
Actually, ESPN showing Ponson on the schedule. Gameday showing no one.
Washburn to the Yankees as a salary dump? The rich get richer.
Guess where Seattle’s playing now? Toronto…
Could explain the article by Ed Price which stats Iggy has been dropped from the 40-man roster.
SWB blog stated Karstens is going straight to Pittsburg. Ross and Mccutcheon assigned to AAA.
**states**
I don’t see Washburn as an upgrade to Ponson. Maybe as an upgrade to Rasner. Maybe as insurance in case one of them starts to tank.
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player....._id=132260
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player....._id=132220
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player....._id=434480
Now that they got Nady, I don’t see them taking on Vidro in that deal.
They probably told the Mariners they will take Washburn on their terms or not at all.
Can’t see Vidro coming back now. No place for him on the roster at this time.
From Chad Jennings:
“Just got out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre clubhouse and I’ll have quotes to post in the next hour or so. First, a few quick bits of news.
– According to a text message Peter Abraham, Kei Igawa has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”
Karstens and Igawa were a waste anyway taking up AAA spots in the rotation. Atleast now they can move some guys up from AA who deserve to be moved up, are younger, and have more potential.
The Yankees arent getting Washburn, I think they will come to their senses. They can look with in for SP help
They could always take Vidro and DFA him right away…it’s just money
Pete,
Quit digging you nose and get us some updates!
“actually i do wanna find out, but couldnt find it. how would i go check it out?”
baseball-reference.com or thebaseballcube.com are great sites for this sort of stuff.
From Boston.com:
“Manny Ramirez just walked through the clubhouse. He didn’t stop to talk to reporters, but without being asked a question, the Sox left fielder addressed a group of media members on his way by.
“Don’t worry about it,” Ramirez said. “I’m not going to talk. I’m going to play. That’s it.”
Ramirez, penciled into this afternoon’s lineup, was then asked if he would definitely be playing today.
“Check the lineup,” he said. “I’m in the lineup.”
“Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez, the lightning rods on their respective teams, just had a lengthy conversation outside the batting cage while the Red Sox were taking batting practice.
Ramirez was among the Sox who took BP on the field, and seems to be in quite the good mood today. He was smiling as he walked through the clubhouse with his son earlier this afternoon.”
Anyone got a full line up for today?
Mel, I don’t like that the Yankees website isn’t showing Ponson on the schedule…
Where the heck is Pete when you need him? Even bad information is better than no information!
He he he he he.
Also, the Mariners want Melky. Cashman wont deal him, he knows him and Robby are best friends
Washburn for Igawa straight up would be excellent. If they have to take Vidro’s salary, I would expect he’d just be released right away.
“Last I could find:”
mlbtraderumors.com has more recent stuff, but I couldn’t vouch for its veracity. Then again, stuff in the papers comes from the same dubious sources
Vidro should be released. He’s batting .226 with a .500 OPS and a 63 OPS+! How can that be your everyday DH?
Igawa cleared waivers and has been outrighted to SWB
I wouldn’t deal Melky to Seattle. He’s not worth much, but he doesn’t need to be a part of that deal.
trisha,
You’re kidding, right? Pete has this big thing about lying.
vidro would not be expensive seeing how the nationals are paying him 2.5 mill and his 08 salary is only 8.5, figure prorated share is about 3 mill
I was pleased as punch with Nady and Marte. That’s enough excitement for one day!
Can’t wait til we get some darned information somewhere. No pregame or postgame I guess.
I am not going to be upset if we don’t get Washburn…
Mel, actually I was goofing on him for posting last night’s trade and having the information be incorrect.
Oh boy you think the Phillies aren’t calling Boston for the availability of Manny Ramirez right now ?
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. Coco Crisp, CF
9. Kevin Cash, C
red sox line up
pregame on YES at3:30
“Also, the Mariners want Melky.”
I read that the Mariners have no interest in Melky.
When someone’s rumored to be a part of a proposal, remember that those come from BOTH sides. And just because someone’s name came up did not mean it was not immediately dismissed by one side or the other. I mean, Melky Cabrera is “one name being discussed” in both of the following:
Cash: Hey, if you guys eat all the money, you could even have…Melky Cabrera, say.
Seatte: Screw you, Cashman!
Settle: Give us Melky Cabrera. Ichiro wants to give him noogies.
Cash: Never! He is the greatest player since Ted Williams! You’ll see! You’ll all see!!!
oops wrong thought it was pre game but postgame is on YES pre game tomorrow
In the crawl at the bottom of the screen on espn news says that the mariners are working on a deal to send washburn to the yanks.
Trisha – YES is having a postgame today. Will you get that?
Michael Kay was on ESPN radio earlier and he said the Yanks want Washburn as a #4 and then Ponson or Rasner would be the #5.
Whozat,
Great, now there’ll be a rumor that the Yankees and M’s are discussing Melky for Ichiro and Ted William’s head (plus cash).
Also I am sure Pete has some tiht deadlines that he is working on right now for Sunday’s paper which has earlier deadlines that usual weekday deadlines and with all the news today I am sure there is lots to write.
Also would imagine maybe the Sunday notes need some changing lol.
yewnork,
So the Yankees in the position of strength here. Mariners have the need more than the Yankees.
randy: Facing Livan after Joba would have batters swing 3 times before the ball gets anywhere close, thus creating the 1 pitch strikeout?
Thanks Gayle.
Don’t everyone get jealous at once but I am now getting to watch the NESN rerun of yesterday’s game. You know how much you can miss when you watch and post. Interestingly enough Lowell was upset about an earlier call also where he was punched out in the 4th inning where he thought he had a walk. So the 9th inning stuff probably just had him reaching his boiling point.
Can’t wait to see the 7th inning repeat of Joba v the mug.
casey blake a dodger!
Fran – THANK YOU! for the information on Kay talking about Rasner/Ponson. I hate the sounds of silence in the background, and the only sounds I can access right now are the sounds of the NESN rerun of yesterday’s game (not bad sounds mind you!)
I definitely can get our pre and postgames. The only thing I am shut out of is any YES broadcast of Yankee games when the Suxers are the opposition (because I am in the Suxer’s market – or more aptly, they are in my market!
ESPN is reporting Joe Girardi says Xavier Nady will be in the lineup today.
Good Luck Ross – parting words from nytimes.com
““I definitely liked being in New York, and I was hoping to be there for the last game at the Stadium,†Ohlendorf said in a telephone interview from Scranton. “But I’m sure it will be a good opportunity. I feel like I’ve definitely gotten better since I’ve been down here.—
trisha,
I’m watching it too. The Red Sox announcers didnt sound too thrilled about the Nady/Marte trade did they? lol
“Pete only has a thing about lying when it comes to Joe Girardi. When it comes to Belicheat, Pete thinks its genius.”
In fairness to Pete, in yesterday’s broadcast, NESN put a schematic of the trade on the screen in the 5th inning and it showed the same cast of characters.
My question is how in hell is it that the people reporting on this stuff could get it so wrong!
Drive 4-5, they definitely didn’t! In fact I remembered when watching last night how when it was still rumored according to them (earlier in the game) how Remy referred to Marte as a tremendous left-handed reliever!
Gonna run out and buy a tape for today’s game since I have a feeling I will have to leave before it’s over. Damn! That means I will miss the postgame. As always I will depend on you guys for any news.
Later.
What a series! What a weekend!
Keep winning Yanks!
How about this: Igawa and LaTroy for Washburn and Vidro (assuming that LaTroy was not DFAed according to Sweeney).
Money matches up–which is all this deal is about.
Newsbreak;
It is as I speak being reported on a local boston radio station that moose and joba held a private meeting on the off day thursday to decide how to pitch to you kill us. Moose determined, (joba concurred) that it seems as if it is perfectly ok to throw the bat without letting go of it at the oppenents pitch, thereby more or less slapping the ball into play.
In light of this new understanding, both moose and joba determined it would be just as acceptable to throw the pitch at the bat. Which joba has or has not admitted too. Joba was reported to have remarked under his breath something about you kill us holding the bat way to close to his punkin head.
Dman,Thanks for your views from Boston. Also, great feature story on you in the All Star Game Program. Must be tough being a Yankees fan in Boston. Enjoy your blog…”Yankees Fan in Boston.” Hang tough up there.
