Hughes and some other guy set to pitch

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 28, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

There is bad weather in Tampa, so Phil Hughes will make his first rehab start for Single-A Charleston on Tuesday against the Asheville Tourists.

Some other guy – Carl Somebody – will pitch as well. Game time is at 7:05 if you’re in the area.

    That’s cold.

I think we should make him play some shortstop when he’s not pitching… just to get our money’s worth.

  2. blazini July 28th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

    lolol carl pavano!

  3. Moe July 28th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

    Good luck Mr. Hughes.

U think Pavano will be rady for game 7 of the world series?

  4. Moe July 28th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

    “ready”

  5. DFox July 28th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Serious question. If Carl Somebody pitches well, can we have him here by Ponson’s next scheduled start?

  6. Irabu's Son July 28th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Last night on ESPN, the graphic that showed the Yankees’ defense said PAVANO instead of PONSON. It was quite possibly the worst baseball broadcast I have ever seen.

  7. Andrew July 28th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I just hope Phil and Carl don’t bond too much while they rehab together…I don’t want any of Pavano’s terrible vibes rubbing off on Phil. He’s already been injured enough at 22, he doesn’t need to be around the Svengali master of going on the DL and collecting your paycheck/completely infuriating your fan base.

  8. NYSuperFan July 28th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I saw that Pavano mis up too…hahahaa

I wont complain if Pavano starts pitching well and can come up to help with the back end of the rotation or the pen.

  9. Brandon (RISP still a problem) (Johan HR count: *18) (X-factor my ***) July 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

    LOL some other guy

  10. blackaccord July 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Well, in the boston chart it showed beckett as the pitcher instead of Lester at one time..

  11. TKinDC July 28th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Is it Carl ‘The Truth’ Williams? I thought he was a boxer!

    (great nickname)

  12. saucY July 28th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

i have to say these minor league team names can be pretty entertaining. the “Asheville Tourists”??? is their mascot a guy with binoculars and a camera?

  13. Paul V July 28th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Pavano is a career .500 pitcher with a 4.27 ERA. He had one good season, and this was in the roids era, right? I am certain he would never cheat, though, and not in a walk year, not Carl.

Anyway, he has no class, no team spirit, and he only cares about himself. Remember how he fired his second or third agent because he said he lied to him? The agent had said he’d get a 40 million dollar contract and it was actually something like 39.95 million, so Pavano stuck it to him, along with his commission.

He only looks out for himself and now he only wants to pitch so that he can showcase himself for some of the pathetic teams who will do anything, take any chance for a mediocre has-been pitcher who’s milking more mileage out of one good season than anybody in history.

I would love it if the Yankees stuck it to him and stranded him in Tampa on the back mounds until November, then left his equipment in a box next to his Porsche in the parking lot.

  14. S.A.- I still believe in this team July 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

    Good luck Phil

    Don’t get hurt again Pavano

  15. B.Stanley July 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

“the “Asheville Tourists”??? is their mascot a guy with binoculars and a camera?”

Hahaha. Yeah and the team’s uniform includes black knee-socks with brown loafers and shorts.

  16. jon July 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

After everything with Pavano, I am surprised the Yankees have even allowed for him to rehabilitate at their facilities, put on their uniform, and even throw a pitch. What a waste. Quite possibly the worst-signing of all time.

  17. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    jon:

    Amen

  18. EricVA July 28th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

    Jon,

I may be wrong, but I believe they are keeping him around so they can collect insurance on his contract. If they cut him they couldn’t do that.

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 28th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

    Good luck Phil!

I know in the last thread some of you all were talking about Dave Roberts and Jorge Posada.

What if Molina had been behind the plate…think we go for 27 then?

  20. Phil July 28th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

    Go Phil!

  21. rbj July 28th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Who is this “Carl Pavano?” Is he a new signee, just out of the 2008 draft? Or maybe a foreign player not subject to the draft? What’s the story on him, how good a pitcher is he, and does he have any history of injuries?

  22. Dr. J July 28th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Orel Hershiser looked so creepy yesterday in the opening dialogue.

  23. DFox July 28th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Paul V, I’d love to see them do that also, but in reality, Pavano is better than Rasner, he’s better than Ponson, and he’s better than Washburn. If he could pitch at the end of the rotation, no matter why he’s doing it, for a contract, to make more money, who cares? If he could help this team get into the playoffs, at least get 1/1,000,000 of your money’s worth, instead of 0.

  24. V July 28th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Pavano is going to help this club this year. He had talent.

  25. gayle July 28th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Isnt Ashville one of the teams that got into that really bad fight the other day

  26. Andrew July 28th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Oh man seeing Orel’s face during that opening made me really glad I don’t have HDTV.

  27. Brandon (RISP still a problem) (Johan HR count: *18) (X-factor my ***) July 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

watching Orel last night was like seeing “Are you afraid of the dark” at the age of 7

  28. Whitey Fraud July 28th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Aren’t you flying in to cover that, Pete? You’re on the Pavano Beat, right?

  29. Emma July 28th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Is Carl Somebody making his first rehab start or did he have some already?

  30. gayle July 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

ALso can someone answer me this question. How come in baseball you rarely if ever ( I have never seen it) have trades that involve draft picks. In other sports you always see trades where they get a player in exchange for a draft pick. Is this not allowed by MLB rules or is there some other reason why they dont trade future draft picks.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Brandon: OMG, Are you Afraid of the Dark scared the @#$#@$ out of me as a kid!

  32. Matt July 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Stating the obvious: The Yankees have 3 very good pitchers in Joba, Mussina, and Pettitte. They have two open spots. Rasner and Ponson are not answers, can write them off. There are a lot of internal possibilities to fill those slots: Hughes, Wang, Kennedy, Pavano, and maybe some others. We need two out of those four or five to pan out into #4 and #5 starters soon enough to help us get into the playoffs. In the playoffs, you only need 4 starters tops. Is this too much to ask? That’s why might not need Washburn. But getting into the playoffs and having 4 pitchers in the playoffs are two different animals. We need some of those internal options to be ready relatively soon, and Wang, the best of them, definitely won’t be. Of course, if Pettitte, Mussina, or Joba ever got injured, we’d really be in trouble

  33. Emma July 28th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

“Hahaha. Yeah and the team’s uniform includes black knee-socks with brown loafers and shorts.”

Don’t forget fanny packs. And a visor wouldn’t hurt.

  34. V July 28th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Its against the rules gayle. Read the fine print.

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 28th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

gayle: Other sports don’t have farm systems like MLB does.

  36. jz5178 July 28th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Anyone think there is a chance Hughes comes to Staten Island on his rehab tour?

  37. Matt-LI July 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Draft picks aren’t allowed to be traded, Gayle. They should really change that, IMO.

  38. TKinDC July 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    DFox –

We have no idea what kind of pitcher Pavano is now. None.

We know he was good in 2004 and he has been wrapped in bandages ever since. He may have lost all of his stuff.

  39. Phil July 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

I believe the Asheville Tourists have or had the oldest players on average in the Sally league.

  40. PJH July 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Remember how nasty Pavano was in that start against Minnesota last year? Was that last year? I think he went 8 shutout innings. Dominated. If we could get that guy, Id be happy.

  41. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    Emma: And an oversized Kodak.

  42. Ninja Burglar July 28th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Certainly would be an interesting story if Pavano actually made it back to the majors and pitched well. It’s a contract year for him, so obviously there’s some incentive this time.

  43. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Please tell me we are not staking a rotation slot on CP..I know Cashman isn’t, thank god.

  44. Dr. J July 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

  45. PJH July 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I dont think anyone would want to trade an asset for a draft pick in baseball. Its not like hoakcey, football or basketball. The picks dont hold as much value as in baseball as you really have no idea most of the time on whether a drafted player will be a ML player.

  46. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

If CP does pitch with all the injuries he will look like the Mummy on the mound.

  47. CUYanks July 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

A couple of years ago, the Asheville Tourists had their manager at the time, Joe Mikiluk, throw one of the greatest tantrums on the field ever.

  48. Chris July 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Gayle: In baseball you’re not allowed to trade draft picks. It’s a stupid rule, but it’s the rule that exists.

  49. Thrillington July 28th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Carl “Marx” Pavano is writing a manifesto called “The Right to be Lazy” which he is hawking as the sequel to Kapital.

  50. Jorge Steinbrenner July 28th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I saw the Pavano gaffe last night on ESPN.

I’m telling you people…..Carl wants to get paid next year. He’s going to pitch for this team this year, and probably will pitch well. It’s up to the Yanks to decide whether they want to use his showcasing to meet their needs.

  51. Chris July 28th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Apparently I’m the only person in the New York area who’s happy that Pavano is coming back. I hope he has an impact on the team in September – he’s certainly better than Ponson and Rasner (although, I don’t know if he’ll pitch well after such a long layoff).

Do you think everyone would forgive and forget if he came back and was a key piece of winning the world series?

  52. Jorge Steinbrenner July 28th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

“Do you think everyone would forgive and forget if he came back and was a key piece of winning the world series?”

Our #5 starter is Sidney Ponson. ’nuff said. :)

I don’t think we’ll “forgive and forget,” but we’ll begrudgingly root for him.

  53. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

    Chris:

    4 yrs on injured reserve……….

  54. CUYanks July 28th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

If Carl Pavano pitches 4 shutouts in the World Series I might forgive him…

  55. RayBlay July 28th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Hughes, Pavano to Rehab for RiverDogs Tuesday
    07/28/2008 1:01 PM
The New York Yankees have announced that both Carl Pavano and Phil Hughes will pitch for the Charleston RiverDogs as part of their rehab assignments. The duo will pitch against the Asheville Tourists in a regularly-scheduled South Atlantic League game that is set for 7:05 p.m.

    http://riverdogs.com/news/head.....le_id=1594

I like how the Riverdogs website calls them a “duo” – like the ‘oft-injured duo’ or the ‘I-can’t-survive-a-month-without-getting-hurt duo’

  56. Matt July 28th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I think everyone would love to see Pavano do well if it actually could happen. People are skeptical and don’t want to put any hopes on him because he’s burned us too many times.
But the other thing about Pavano to remember is that he really only had one good year. It’s not like he had five good years. He had one year. So it’s very possible that year was the fluke. He may not really be very good even injury-free.

  57. Brandon (RISP still a problem) (Johan HR count: *18) (X-factor my ***) July 28th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

OMFG Tell me he don’t look like Freddy Kreuger here

Thanks J, seriously that’s a face for nightmare in elm street.

  58. eric July 28th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

It would be quite ironic is Carl Pavano got a big win for the Yankees this year. 2008 has been weird enough, wouldn’t surprise me.

  59. BBB July 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Asheville Tourists? lol. That’s almost as clever as the Kalamazoo Mud Hens.

And as someone else mentioned, yes, Hughes should absolutely be forbidden from speaking to Pavano, or even so much as making eye contact with him. Don’t want anything to rub off!

On a serious note though, about how long is it expected to take for each of them to be Major League ready? I’d assume Porcelain Pavano’s rehab would be longer since he’s coming off TJ and has to build up arm strength, etc, or has he already done that via a throwing program?

Then again, I know they will be extra careful with Hughes. Just wondering which we should expect first. And I know it sounds ridiculous to “expect” any MLB productivity from Pavano, but just watch the golddigging DL stint manage to come up big in a contract year.

  60. EricVA July 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

    Chris,

Even if he did come back in August and win a couple games, I doubt he’d be a key piece in a WS win. More than likely he’d be left off the postseason roster.

  61. Someone Else July 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I hope Pavano comes back, is successful, and helps the Yankees win the World Series.

On his way home from the World Series, he slips and falls, and fractures his pinky finger, and no one signs him for 2009, because he’ll be out for 18 months.

  62. Jorge Steinbrenner July 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I think he’ll do well. He’s always had the stuff, and didn’t look bad in very limited duty last year.

Remember….how he does may be the difference between whether he gets a minor league deal somewhere next year or gets an actual real contract. I think he brings his best stuff…..that idiot!!!! :)

  63. Paul V July 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

DFox, are you basing your assessment of Pavano on his mediocre numbers or his big heart and his hunger to win?

  64. Emma July 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

“Apparently I’m the only person in the New York area who’s happy that Pavano is coming back.”
That’s not true. I want him back but I just don’t want to admit it. I actually really hope that if he comes back–the day he starts is a game I have tickets to.

  65. PJH July 28th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    Any updates on Wang?

  66. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    I pulling for Phil.

  67. Jorge Steinbrenner July 28th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

“DFox, are you basing your assessment of Pavano on his mediocre numbers or his big heart and his hunger to win?”

I’m not DFox, but starlets don’t date guys on minor league deals, and guys with minor league deals don’t get to drive Ferraris. Forget the hunger to win…..the Rajah may want to impress Megan Fox.

  68. Timothy Clougher July 28th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I read somewhere that Wang could be done for the year. Not sure how valid it is.

  69. Matt-LI July 28th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I don’t know why Samuel L. Jackson played the character he did in, ‘Unbreakable’… At least if Pavano played it, it would have been based on a true story.

  70. BBB July 28th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

” It’s up to the Yanks to decide whether they want to use his showcasing to meet their needs.”

Showcasing or not, I will accept any productive pitching Glass Carl decides to give us w/a smile. Definitely wouldn’t refuse to let him pitch just to prove a point, it is cutting off your own nose to spite your face.

  71. 86w183 July 28th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

    More on the Ashville Tourists—

Every player has a map in his pants pocket and SPF 5,000 splattered all over his body

the team hats have cute little ears attached

The team bus goes from city with the left blinker on the entire time

  72. fred from jersey July 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

i wish there was a way to listen to this pavano game.

  73. BBB July 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

“DFox, are you basing your assessment of Pavano on his mediocre numbers or his big heart and his hunger to win?”

I’m not DFox either, but I am basing my assessment of Pavano solely on his hunger to get paid. Somehow, he will find a way to help this team I bet, just like he found a way to keep his stock high last time millions were on the line.

  74. Westerner99 July 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Draft picks cannot be traded because the league doesn’t want certain teams tanking anymore than they already do. It forces some competitive balance by forcing lesser teams to draft high. They skirt around it by reaching down and drafting below slot and blame it on signability.

  75. BBB July 28th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

86w – ROTFL!! Do they wear fanny packs as part of their uni’s too?

  76. rconn23 July 28th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I’d take Pavano, Charmin-soft body and all, over Ponson
    any day of the week.

  78. DLev July 28th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I can’t believe you guys are making fun of my home team. For your information, the Asheville Tourists mascot is, of course, Teddy Tourist, a six foot tall bear who scares the pants off my four year old daughter, and, as I’ve seen many times from the stands, has a definite eye for girls in the 16-20 year range. He’s also maybe the laziest mascot I’ve ever seen. I have yet to see him make it past second base when he races against kids between innings. Usually he starts arguing with one of the players, or trips, rather than having to run the whole way.

“We” won the first half of the season, beating out Charleston by one game. I secretly root for Charleston when they’re playing here, but otherwise I’ve gotten to see some quite good players passing through.

  79. Eddie in Yonkers July 28th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I can’t see Pavano pitching in a game of significance at the Stadium knowing full well that he would be under a severe microscope by fans ready to unleash a chorus of boos heard as far south as Philly with the first wrong thing he did.
He’s have to be sedated on the mound with attempts of blocking out all the jeers.

  80. DFox July 28th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

“DFox, are you basing your assessment of Pavano on his mediocre numbers or his big heart and his hunger to win?”

I’m DFox, and I said IF he pitches well in rehab games, he should get a try. If he somehow pitches like he used to, he can really help the team. It’s not like you’d be knocking an all star out of the rotation to give him a shot.

  81. Lampchop Louie July 28th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

The Ashville Tourists give away free coconut oil lotion to fans at home games with hopes that the stink will cause the opposing team to swing any anything near the plate to get the game over with and get on the bus headed outta town.

Just having some fun…. you must admit having “Tourists” as your nickname/mascot opens the door.

Could be worse… you could be a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz

    THE BANANA SLUGS !!

Must be fun to announce the game when they face Cal-Irvine

    THE ANTEATERS !!

  84. Blargh July 28th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Doesn’t some high school in NYC have Engineers as their mascot/team name?

  85. Trev July 28th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I live in the area; I’m going just to see Pavano. Hopefully I’ll see Hughes in the future in the Bronx.

My buddy knows the Dogs manager, perhaps I can get him to keep them separate.

  86. Paul V July 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

DFox, I hear what you are saying, and if it were any other player, I would go along with it. Perhaps my utter hatred of Pavano – based on his abysmal time with us – has clouded my view. I don’t know, I would hire Manny if I thought we could win. The only two people I really hate seeing in pinstripes are Bonds and Pavano. I would rather try IPK or Hughes again. Or somebody else. It feels like Pavano wins if he gets to showcase with us. If it helps us win, sure, that’s the realpolitik way to look at it, but I loathe the guy. I was happy when we got him, too, but he’s really the most classless guy we have had in a long time.

  87. DLev July 28th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

I know — I make fun of the name too. Plus, I did go to Santa Cruz. Maybe I just have to go to places that have goofy nicknames.

The name “Tourists,” has been around since the twenties. Earle Combs played for them. That’s probably the most famous Asheville player to go on to the Yankees.

  88. nyyfaninlaaland July 28th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

The Riverdogs game can also be heard from a link on their website.

86w – you beat me to the Banana Slugs. But I live close to UC Irvine, and theirs is a classic as well.

The best was when they were in the College World Series 2 years ago (a couple of Riverdogs players, OF’s Holliday and Morris, were on that team).

They shorten the name on the front of their baseball jerseys to ‘Eaters.

In their 1st game they played Oregon State, who you may remember are the Beavers.

I’ll leave it at that, but the announcers must have been a bit nervous.

  89. dazzler July 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Pavano should never pitch in pinstripes again.

  90. ansky July 28th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

“i wish there was a way to listen to this pavano game.”

riverdogs.com will have it on the air

anyone going? I have to be there for work anyway, so added bonus. I’ll snap some good pics from the camera wells which are usually empty, but i have a feeling theyll be crowded tomorrow night
