I’d take him as a bench player – but we all know that’s not happening. So the answer is no. Manny’s one of the best bats in the game, but I wouldn’t spend $20M on 37 year old that’s injury prone and acts like a jerk.

But I’d take him in the playoffs any day.

As the last two nights demonstrate (as well as the last two weeks, and the last 7 years) it’s all about the pitching.

The receipe (in order):

(1) get good to great starters
(2) get a lights out closer
(3) pray you have good middle relief, and manage them well
(4) be sure you have enough hitting to put at least 4 runs on the board most nights

This will win you 90-95 games. If you are also hot going into October, you will also win the WS.

Yanks have always had 2 and 4, but since 2001 never really 1 and 3. Torre had it all from 96 to 01, and continued to manage as if he had it all from 02-07, even though he didn’t.

ARod et al will give us enough for (4), and while Manny in pinstripes would be intriguing (at maybe $15 million x 2), he is not really necessary. CC Sabathia is more necessary than Manny.

What if the Yankees could put some disciplinary clauses in the contract? Most of us say no because we worry about his throwing tantrums the way he has in Boston and not playing … but if the Yankees could protect themselves in the contract against that kind of behavior … would we think differently? I would.
