Melancon promoted to Scranton

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 29, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to Mike Ashmore, the Yankees made some minor-league moves tonight. They are:

RHP Mark Melancon and LHP Chase Wright from Trenton to Scranton. RHP Steven White demoted to Trenton.

I was fairly well convinced that Melancon would play a role with the bullpen in the majors this season. But he is already at 75 innings, which is likely fairly close to what his limit was going to be this season.

Yeah, I thought he would be up in the majors, but I think it may be a little late

He’s supposed to be Mo’s successor. The last thing they want to do is rush him.

    Pete,
please comment on the awesomeness of the playlist tonight, for my 10th show, it was by far one of the best. All the best,

    Wally Pipp.

This bullpen’s luck may be running out and Robertson’s confidence may be shattered after last night.

But on the bright side, we get to see Daniel Cabrera mow down the Yankees yet again tonight. For anyone else going to Tuesday’s game I’ll be the guy keeping tally of Captain Rally Killer’s GIDP count.

I’m going with 3 Yankee hits and 11 strikeouts in 7 to 8 innings and will be optimistic and say they’ll score 1 run.

I agree Tim, it was bound to happen… good thing we got Marte, who is a fairly proven commodity, because it looks like the wheels are falling off for Farns, Giese, Veras, and Robertson.

  6. John H. July 29th, 2008 at 2:25 am

I have complete trust in MO, some trust in Edwar, but little in Farnsworth and Veras and Giese.

Pete I love the updates but…

    Get some sleep man haha.

Man, 1 bad outing from Robertson, and hes washed up?

That HR was the first he’s allowed in his post college season era, com’on man

Give me a break. Robertson will be fine.

He couldn’t find the zone at all tonight. Girardi will get him back out there within the next couple of days and this disastrous outing will be behind him.

    Unreal.

Talking about innings and limits… Pete, what’s Joba’s innings limit this season?

Isn’t it great to see all the naysayers come out when the Yankees lose? Isn’t it even better when they go back to their stinking holes when the Yankees win?

Can we get rid of Chase Wright already? I never want to see him in Pinstripes again!

Yes. Nobody is allowed to do poorly for the Yankees. NOBODY!!!!

You have a questionable amount of rage towards a spot-starter that will likely never reach the majors again…

  16. V July 29th, 2008 at 8:27 am

Wright will be a solid major leaguer.

The problem with these bandwagon fans is they take a small sample size, which in this case is last nights game and project it forever. If a player pitches bad or goes 0-4, they believe that is how they will perform the rest of the year, maybe even their career. If the guy has a good performance, then they believe he’s turning the corner and will never give up a run again or will be batting .600 for the rest of the year. They then turn on this same person when he has a bad outing and the cycle continues to repeat. Rather comical really but like clockwork when it comes to these boards.

I had a discussion yesterday with a Yankee fan I work with saying if the Yanks went 35-23 the rest of the way, they would be at 93 wins and I don’t know if that’s enough for a playoff spot. His response, without hesitation, was to say the Yanks have proven they can do it and will do it again. Tampa Bay has never proven they can do it and are about to fall off the pace. My response to him was what about Arizona in 2001, they hadn’t proved a thing before while the Yanks had won 3 WS in a row. He said any team can get lucky. I said what about the Angels in 2002, Fla in 2003, Boston in 2004, Chi in 2005, Det in 2006, Cle in 2007, Colorado in 2007…where did these teams all come from? He stammered and tried to change the topic.

It just drives me insane how some fans just assume everything is a given and everything will always remain the status quo, based on one outing, one season, one at bat even. How many NY Giants fans are out there right now who think now that the Giants know how to win, they’ll repeat again this year? Yah, I know its football but same principle applies because I’m already beginning to hear it about them too now.

Melancon may come up at some point but at who’s expense? That bullpen looks very good right now.LaTroy was the last dud and he’s gone.

  19. bru July 29th, 2008 at 8:56 am

they wan’t to be carefull with melancon because he is approaching his pitch limit but he looks great.

  20. eric in australia July 29th, 2008 at 8:59 am

Wrights K numbers in AA worry me. Melancon was used very carefully, usually going 2-3 IP every 3 days. They arent taking any risks with him this year, but i think theres a good chance he breaks ST with the big league team.

  21. jonathan July 29th, 2008 at 9:25 am

i have a question for all: why was melancon pitching 2 or 3 innings? if he is indeed being watched very carefully wouldnt you want him to pitch only 1 inning at a time?

  22. 86w183 July 29th, 2008 at 10:07 am

The best way to re-hab a reliever is have him build up arm strength… two or three innings followed by two or three days off. Melancon is coming back very well and his handling has been tremendous. I see him in SWB the rest of the way and a September call up that likely does not involve pitching. He’ll likely open 2009 as the closer in SWB, but could be a set up man in the Bronx depending on what the Yanks do with other personnel.

Joba’s got about 60 innings or so left on the count. That may be expandable if the Yanks extend to post-season. He’s a horse, so I don’t see any issues.

I like Chase Wright… he showed excellent poise after his shelling by the Sawx… not sure he’s a MLB starter, but he’s got a chance.

I too am, stunned by the nonsense of throwing in the towel on every guy who has a bad night. Farnsie is awesome for three weeks, but he hangs a slider and he becomes a liability? Robertson gets smacked around after eight straight scoreless inningsa and now he’s a bum?

    Get real!

  23. AC July 29th, 2008 at 10:15 am

The pen isnt a problem here. The real problem is that our “ace” is a loss guaranteed everytime he faces Baltimore and that our $275M cleanup man only seems to clean up when the bases are empty (kudos though to being 2nd in the league on average though, but the RISP is really bad for someone this good).

Melancon has been dominating pitchers. Most of his 2-3 inning outings don’t require more than 20 pitches. And it’s pitch count that really matters. Hitters in the Majors would be seeing a lot more pitches in that 75 innings. I would equate that to about 40-50 MLB innings for Melancon. No worries.

  26. swo July 29th, 2008 at 11:44 am

    *dominating HITTERS, rather

  27. luis July 29th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

they should be careful with melancon… he is a good pitcher but he is comming from an injury… i just dont wanna risk him…. about wright, i think he is a below average pitcher… i think he is not going to make the team… if he has some value trading him would be the option

  28. bigjf July 29th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Hopefully Melancon makes it to the bigs by next season. I can’t wait to see him. If the Yankee bullpen wasn’t so strong, he’d be there by now, but it’s a luxury to be able to be careful with him.

  29. bodhisattva July 29th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

They wanted him to work on his changeup. He’s been doing that. The guy is awesome. As for Robertson, at the risk of repeating – he’s fine, dude. He blew up in a game we were on our way to losing, any way. He’s been great in meaningful spots, and the Yankees like his mettle as well as as stuff.
