Teixeira available, but Yankees seek starter

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 29, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Getting two types of e-mail this morning. Half are “Hey, I was at the Bruce show last night, too” and the rest are “Can the Yankees get Mark Teixeira?”

To the concert folks: Tremendous show, glad you had fun.

To the trade talkers: I don’t think so.

The Braves have made it clear that Teixeira is available but the Yankees are not inclined to use their better prospects on a rental player. There is no chance whatsoever that Scott Boras won’t put Teixeira on the market after the season.

The Yankees have one need and it’s a starting pitcher. Another bat would not hurt. But once Brian Cashman robbed the Pirates for Damaso Marte and Xavier Nady, the focus went to starting pitching. They’re playing chicken with Seattle for Jarrod Washburn.

Talked to two people this morning that said the Dodgers are so desperate for a shortstop that they may try and get Alberto Gonzalez. Sure, Joe, send Clayton Kershaw. I’d be surprised if the Yankees did anything to help the Dodgers.

Yes, but clatyon kershaw for alberto gonzalez?

    That’s like a (I-can’t-say-it-and-keep-the-thread-G-rated) waiting to happen.

  3. mel (47-1) July 29th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Trade AG for Bowa and Martin.

Lesson #2 from GM correspondence course: Ask for the moon!

  4. daneptizl July 29th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Kennedy + Gonzalez + PTBNL for Kershaw. I like it.

    “first one !!!”

    lol

  6. justin July 29th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Arizona will get tex. We can’t sell low on our prospects now. Plus he is a fa at the end of the season

  7. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 29th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

A-Gon + Betemit for Andy LaRoche, and or Kuo (since Torre hardly used him) Kuo could be our another lefty starter.

  8. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

“A-Gon + Betemit for Andy LaRoche, and or Kuo (since Torre hardly used him) Kuo could be our another lefty starter.”

I don’t think the Dodgers want Betemit back after they just traded him for Proctor.

  9. mel (47-1) July 29th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

You mean Nomar doesn’t play SS anymore?

I heard someone on the radio compare what Manny is doing to what Nomar did. Nomar pulled himself from the game that Jeter went flying into the stands. That was an interesting contrast.

  10. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

    Here we go again…….

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 29th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

We got Betemit from the dodgers, no way we can trade him back to the dodgers…at least not so soon

  12. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:11 pm

“Graziano also talked to an NL official familiar with the Mets’ plans. That person said the Mets are considering a bullpen overhaul where they would ship out Aaron Heilman and Scott Schoeneweis and bring in different relievers.”

Oh yea, cause Heilman and Schoenweis is going to net you a ton lol

  13. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Maybe we can package Alberto Gonzales and someone else for Lowe?

  14. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 29th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

I think Cashman is aggressively shopping Betemit around since there are better options than him. I wouldn’t be surpised to see Betemit gone before the Angel’s game on Thursday.

The Tiexera to the Yankees rumors need to be automatically dismissed because there is simply no room on this team for him. That is unless you want to play Damon in CF which I’m sure the vast majority here will oppose.

The acquisition of Nady basically killed any possibility of Nady coming here in 08.

Don’t worry, in 09 Tex will be a Yankee.

  16. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

  17. S.A.- I still believe in this team but did the offense go missing again? July 29th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

I thought the Mets were gonna try and turn Heilman into a starter. I thought I read that somewhere.

    Anywho, wait for Tex.

  18. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

hahahaha…Kershaw for Gonazalez. Well, I guess we can all dream a little. Nonetheless, I would not want a pitcher that has been under the influence of Torre. Just look at how effective (i.e. see “horrible”) that Proctor has been this year and since Torre ruined his arm. I’m sure there are other pitchers on that staff who are being run out there incessantly too.

As for the Yankees…I am surprised the Mariners are thinking they can get more from the Yankees, other than a C-level prospect and the assumption of a ridiculous contract. Just shows how screwed up that front-office continues to be…Sexson, Beltre, Bedard, Washburn…who else? The Yanks don’t really HAVE to pull the trigger on this for anything more than what they have offered, but I’d like to see Washburn here. I don’t think he’s that good, but he’s a competitor with some fire and a lefty in NY is better than Ponson in NY.

    There’s another Nady??!!

  20. Global Warming July 29th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

CC Sabathia threw 125 pitches last night. People better start worrying about the Brewers and how they use the guy. This has the potential of a team with ZERO percent of retaining him to just run the guy into the ground.

Makes you wonder if Sabathia coming to the Yankees is such a sure deal. Especially when the guy is building a friggen house on the West Coast.

  21. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 29th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

it is me, or that doesnt make any sense at all? =X

  22. fred from jersey July 29th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Pete you need to ask about Meacham. Now hes holding up runners who could easily score instead of sending everyone. He clearly has no idea how to do his job.

  23. pat July 29th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

“I’d be surprised if the Yankees did anything to help the Dodgers.”

No team is going to do something just to help another team out. Is there a Yankee/Dodger issue I’m missing?

  24. Johnny pinstripes July 29th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

A Gonzalez, Bobby Meachem and a bag of balls (possibly autographed by Girardi) for Larry Bowa, Derreck Lowe and the biggest scrub on their squad..

seriously though, kershaw is out of the question but i wonder if they can package gonzalez and some b-level prosepects for lowe

  26. Global Warming July 29th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

I’m so happy about the Nady trade that I wrote Nady twice. Nady will be a solid Yankee because Nady is a righty and Nady hits lefties pretty well. I also think Nady is a much better field than Bobby because Nady isn’t afraid of the big bad blue walls at Yankee stadium. Too bad for Bobby since Nady has a contract into 09 and Nady will probably replace Bobby fulltime because Nady is a quality player.

  27. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 29th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

pat: You ever heard of the 1950s? ;)

  28. Joe Monte July 29th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Alberto Gonzalez is probably a C/B- prospect right? You can have the Yankees send Gonzalez to the Dodgers for a higher prospect that could be spinned to the Mariner’s for Washburn.

  29. mel (47-1) July 29th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

    Russell,

Well, the HR last night marked Nady’s arrival!

  30. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

I know the Yankees and scouts are really high on Gonzalez’s defense. His hitting is suspect, and it seems like hitting-shortstops have become the norm now. No more Ozzie Guillens and Ozzie Smiths and Omar Vizquels, I suppose.

  31. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 29th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

if Cashman seriously want another lefty starter than Kuo would be the right man for the job. lefties are only hitting .215 (it would be a bit lower) off him. and plus, Seattle’s new GM think we must be stupid.

  32. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Is this Cash Money’s last year?

    We need to resign him……….

Is this a gameday type thing? Nady is replacing Nady!

  34. Phil July 29th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

The Yanks should certainly trade AG for a better prospect, then they should still trade whatever they planned to to the Mariners if they’re still interested in dealing with them.

  35. Tom Gaffney July 29th, 2008 at 12:23 pm

Thanks, Pete. We could definitely use some back of the rotation help, though I’d love to see Kennedy come in and win the job. I’d also like to see a catcher come in to spell/back up/provide an insurance policy to Jose and provide a better alternative to Moeller. You seem to be very adamant that the Yanks have no interest in acquiring another backstop. Is the Ken Rosenthal story re: the Yankees being interested in Gerald Laird just false? http://msn.foxsports.com/other.....8;ATT=3498

  36. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

I wonder who Cash Money talks to, probably Gene.

Good thing he doesn’t dwell in here. :)

  37. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

    “Russell,

Well, the HR last night marked Nady’s arrival!”

I must have watched that HR 100x on gameday. What a shot… love a guy who can put fire in the club who had been getting shut down the whole game.

  38. S.A.- I still believe in this team but did the offense go missing again? July 29th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

So..Fatcesa is going to possibly be by himself on WFAN and Russo might be going to Sirius?

    From Neil Best’s blog:

When I first learned last month about the probable breakup of Mike Francesa and Chris Russo this summer, I was told it might take until Labor Day to sort itself out but more likely would be settled by Aug. 1.

So time is running out! But I’ve heard from three people this Tuesday that the end of the saga appears to be drawing close, and the basics have not changed lately. Chris is likely to land at Sirius for big dough, and Mike is likely to carry on without him, also for big dough.

It never bothered me when the athletes I interviewed made many times more money than me, but I admit it – it’s sometimes a little strange and depressing writing about sports media figures who make many times more money than me.

    Sigh.

  39. vinny-b July 29th, 2008 at 12:26 pm

“A source tells the New York Post that a deal that would send Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees is “dead.”

    then so be it.

I wanted washburn. However, like it said in the movie Friday: “It’s about the principalities” Teams will grow to understand, the NYY organization will not be held up, like they used to be. Not as long, as Cashman have power

  40. luis July 29th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

im not a big fan of a. gonzalez….the dodgers are still on the run, so i think they wont trade any of their starting lineup… if they get someone like abreu or dewitt it would be a steal

  41. TKinDC July 29th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Somehow, I think CC will be able to afford an East Coast residence if he sticks his mind to it.

We can always hold a bake sale for him to help avoid a sub-prime mortgage. :)

  42. al arodien July 29th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

You know guys the yankees didnt have a great comeback game in years ! The last time i remember was in 2005 when randy gave up like 7/8 runs against tampa and we were down like 11 something in the 8th and we came all the way back! (bernies 3 run double gave us the lead) thats a long time! Yes i know that they came back in a few games but i am talking about big Deficits.

  43. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

A-Gon and Betemit for Russell Martin. :)

  44. vinny-b July 29th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

“Maybe we can package Alberto Gonzales and someone else for Lowe?”

    intelligent idea.

I wonder how flexible LA is, to moving Lowe?

  45. mel (47-1) July 29th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

CC can go live in his big mansion after his arm falls off.

  46. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

The Dodgers are trying to trade for a shortstop because they believe they are in the race. Trading away Derek Lowe would completely undermine that.

Anyway, Ned Coletti has flatly said “No” to the idea.

  47. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

“A-Gon and Betemit for Russell Martin. :)

Careful Timothy, you are degrading the foundation of this blog.

    al,

That game that Roger gave up 8 runs in an inning only to have the Yankees get them back would’ve been one for the ages if we had won.

  49. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Al Arodien…I was thinking the same thing last night, hoping for a mega-comeback. I don’t know if it dates back as far as you said, but definitely haven’t seen one this year and can’t remember one last year. I do remember them coming back on the White Sox, down 8, last year or the year before.

  50. vinny-b July 29th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

don’t understand why WFAN would retain Fancesca.

then again, i completely don’t understand why either have been on the network, as long as they have.

    zero talent.

  51. Fredo Corleone July 29th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

“The Dodgers are trying to trade for a shortstop because they believe they are in the race. Trading away Derek Lowe would completely undermine that.

Would think that having Derek Lowe in their rotation is one of the reasons they feel it necessary to get a shortstop who can…well, actually play shortstop.

  52. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

“The Dodgers are trying to trade for a shortstop because they believe they are in the race. Trading away Derek Lowe would completely undermine that.”

  56. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Willie Randolph will be back after this year…no more Meachem.

  57. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

I don’t think its a big deal if the Yankees pass on Washburn. His being in the rotation isn’t the one thing that will push the Yankees past the other contenders.

IPK may just end up coming back and helping. Even Pavano has a shot. For back of the rotation, that might be good enough.

  58. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Doesn’t seeing all these closers flame out across baseball make you appreciate Mariano even more?

  59. TKinDC July 29th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

I do think there needs to be some move…at some point, as earlier in the year, Molina will get tired and it will effect his overall game. Another catcher would be preferable, even though Moeller is an easy guy to root for.

  63. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

  66. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Is there any news on Sanchez???

  79. Matt July 29th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Adding Texeira would be great but its not realistic this year. In the off-season I am sure the Yankees will offer him a blank check to play 1B. But this regime has shown they are not willing to trade prospects and sign a guy to a longterm deal. Which makes sense, why trade the future and give up a lot of money when you can just give up a lot of money when the guy hits the market. And he will hit the market, Boras will make sure of that. So it will just cost the Yankees money to have the Big Tex playing 1b next year.

  80. TIDROW July 29th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Why would Meachams coaching surprise anyone. Wasn’t he the guy; along with Dale Berra to be thrown out at the plate as they both ran about 2 steps apart from each other?

  81. Blargh July 29th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

But Neyer, Livan did his share of munching on innings!

Why do I keep thinking that Nomar retired earlier this season? Yaknow, despite all facts saying he hasn’t yet…

  85. bigjf July 29th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

I heard Teixeira to Boston as a possibility on 1050 today, also the possibility of a 3 way trade with the Pirates and Mets, sending Manny to the Mets and Bay and Fernando Martinez to the Sox. If any of that happens, they’re going to run away and hide. I know Boras is involved with Tex, but I doubt that would be a rental if it were to happen…

And if the Dodgers want Alberto Gonzalez, I’d love to hear what they would offer.

  86. Matt July 29th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

I would just like to tell people who are down on Jose Tabata and think he is a bum to look at Carlos Quentin. He was in a similar position with the dbacks last year and now look at him he could be the MVP of the AL. I am not saying Tabata will be MVP next year but dont say he is garbage. He was in the Futures game at 17.

  87. Fredo Corleone July 29th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

“Manny and Theo are at war in Boston…”

Ramirez now has Boras as an agent, right??? You have to believe that Boras, who makes nothing unless Ramirez gets a new contract, has instructed Ramirez to shoot his way out of town (read: make sure the option isn’t picked up) on the promise he can get him 4-5 years at big money. I think the 1st half of that plan has succeeded. But I also think Ramirez will have to play his ass off for 2 months to get 75% of what Boras is promising him.

  88. S.o.S.27 July 29th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

I think Cashman needs to stop screwing around and give the braves what they want already. C.J.Henry for Texiera. Get it done!!

Who would the Pirates get in return? Seems like they would be on the short end of the stick in that one.

  90. Matt July 29th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

That’s because it’s really difficult to come back from big deficits. It’s not a common occurrence for a team to come back from 7+ runs down.

I forgot, the Yankees are supposed to win every game, otherwise they’re losers.

    And the Pirates get???

  97. Matt July 29th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

if Tex in boston, Youk goes to LF

I think the best deal for Boston is Matt Holliday for Manny. Not sure if or why Rockies do it but it works best for Boston. Maybe Boston adds some prospects b/c Manny would likely leave at end of year.

  98. Timothy Clougher July 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

  99. sunny615 July 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Lowe’s availability I would think depends on Kershaw’s development and whether or not the Dodgers think Kershaw’s ready to step into Lowe’s spot. If so, Lowe could probably be had, but not for just AGonzo.

  100. bigjf July 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Ray, I think the Pirates would get prospects from both teams. I’m pretty sure I heard Boston would get Fernando Martinez as well, but that trade would make more sense if the Pirates got him instead.

The plan from there I guess would be to move Youk to LF and maybe Bay in CF?

  101. TurnTwo July 29th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

yes, you are nuts. (i kid, kind of).

seriously, way too much from the Mets end. Maine just hurt his shoulder last night, and Pelfrey has been lights out. trading him right now makes no sense unless they are getting a pitcher back.

if Manny were to go to the Mets, Id guess the Mets would prob send FMart as the centerpiece and a couple of loose parts.

if I’m Omar, though, I make the move for Manny and roll the dice.

“I think the best deal for Boston is Matt Holliday for Manny. Not sure if or why Rockies do it but it works best for Boston.”

No way Colorado trades Matt Holliday for Manny Ramirez. Boston would have to send a couple of really good prospects along as well.

Can’t see them doing it anyway. Why would they trade their upstanding outfielder for a headache when they’re still in the race and have Holliday under control for one more year?

  105. TKinDC July 29th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

“I would just like to tell people who are down on Jose Tabata and think he is a bum to look at Carlos Quentin. He was in a similar position with the dbacks last year and now look at him he could be the MVP of the AL. I am not saying Tabata will be MVP next year but dont say he is garbage. He was in the Futures game at 17.”

I hope Tabata does well, but giving an example of a guy that turned it around could probably be countered by hundreds that didn’t.

I think we are going to be able to compete this year and without the trade I wasn’t so confident.

    I will boldly predict that time will tell . . . :)

    Timothy,

I’ve heard Lowell to LF, assuming Manny’s gone.

Really, all Boston needs is bullpen help. They must’ve been disgusted to hear the Yankees had snagged Marte.

I heard the Pirates beat writer on the radio yesterday and he said the Pirates got what they needed from us. They have zero pitching in the top of system.

  107. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I think the Mets could more than Manny for FMart right now.

  108. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

If I’m the Mets, I don’t trust Omar to send anymore prospects anywhere. Martinez is about the only prospect they seemingly have left. He’s depleted that entire system…and he’ll trade it now to get Ramirez, who is flaky? I don’t know how you do that.

This has lose 3 of 4 or 4 of 4 written allover unless we can get a pitcher to replace Ponson or Rasner, whether its a minorleague pitch like Kennedy or Aceves, or a veteran from somewhere, we just need to get a different pitcher in here.

  126. Bart July 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

leave tex to the offseason –

but filling the two holes they have at P are critical — give IPK a shot at Ponson’s and get Washburn for Rasner’s — if IPK fails there is only one hole and there is Rasner

yankee fans are obsessing over fairness issues —

the issue is minimizing risk — the post season is at hand but
without Washburn the Yankees do not make the post season

even with him they may miss but he will keep them in games that Ponson has no shot at

Gardner (who i was high on) will never hit in the majors well enough to post OF numbers

    – can’t keep him and melky – so if he is needed to make the trade then so be it —

if you keep him and he funks in AAA after being in the show he will have no value over the winter — the better move is now

  127. Fran July 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I can’t see the Sox trading Manny within the next two days. It’s too complicated a deal to do in such a short time. It’s more of an off-season move. I see them exercising his option and then trading hin like Cashman did with Sheffield. Then they have some control over where he goes.

  128. sunny615 July 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

And who did he trade? No top tier prospects. Tex’s cost is a tad be higher. According to MLBTR – it’s a 1bman, starter, and OF. Think Boston will match that price? unlikely.

Nice in theory, Tim. However, with free agency a near certainty for him this offseason, he now has to sing for his supper. Even as the soap swirls around him, he’s driven in 4-5 runs the past couple nights.

    MLBTR on Tex traderumors:

“According to Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times, the Angels are once again exploring a trade for Teixeira. They are warming to the idea of adding a rental player to their first-place club. The price for Teixeira is said to be a first baseman, starter, and power-hitting outfielder. (Small sample alert) IN 38 AB so far in A ball, he’s posting a .211 BA with a .461 OPS. Pretty big drop off from Rk league (.310, .971).

From Minor League SCOUT John Sickels:

“The Rangers picked up Engel Beltre from the Red Sox in the Eric Gagne deal. He has excellent tools, there is no doubt about this. And he’s young, born November 1, 1989.

I got some flack for rating him as a Grade C prospect in the book. Looking at it, I can see a case for Grade C+, given his strong scouting reports. But no higher than that at this point, not with these kind of performance numbers. He hit .208/.310/.400 with 44 strikeouts in 34 games for the GCL Red Sox. He then hit .310/.388/.583 in 22 games for the AZL Rangers after the trade, followed by .211/.250/.211 in nine games for Spokane. All told he hit a combined .243/.329/.433 in 65 games last year.

Near as I can tell, people are drooling over him because of the 22 games of hot hitting in the Arizona Rookie League, but are ignoring the 43 games of mediocre-to-poor hitting at the other two stops.

As stated, I can see him as a Grade C+. He’s young, he’s got a lot of power, and scouts like him. But his strike zone judgment is poor, his strikeout rate is very high, and even the scouts say he’s raw.

It’s too late to change the grade for the book, but I want to be more out of Beltre before buying into all the hype of him as a future star. He could turn into a star. But he could also flame out against advanced pitching, and I haven’t seen enough to decide which is more likely. Thus the grade.”

  168. raymagnetic â„¢ July 29th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

    Sunny615,

That report was in January. Secondly a C+ grade to an 18 year old who has barely played any minor league ball is excellent despite what you may want to believe.

In July, Baseball America did their prospect hotsheet and they had more glowing things to say about him.

Team: low Class A Clinton (Midwest)
    Age: 18
    Why He’s Here: .545/.545/1.136 (12-for-22), 2 2B,1 3B, 3 HR, 4 RBIs, 7 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 2-for-2 SB
The Scoop: The Rangers challenged Beltre with an assignment to low Class A Clinton, and he’s been holding his own all year as the Midwest League’s youngest position player, all the while impressing with his athleticism. A potential five-tool talent, Beltre remains understandably raw in most phases of the game, but his response to a difficult environment has been off the charts. He was a key contributor to Clinton’s Western Division first-half title, and he’s gotten even better since.

After looking like he might be slowing down a bit it in June when he hit .277/.305/.396, he’s responded in a big way in July. Beltre has had nine multi-hit games this month, including a stretch of five in a row from the 10th through the 16th, on his way to hitting .369/.379/.631 in 65 July at-bats. This stretch has allowed him to climb back up the league leaderboards, where he leads the MWL in runs scored (70) and is second in hits (115) and triples (9).

He’s even begun to show early signs of the power that has been projected of him. After hitting just four home runs in the first three months of the year, Beltre clubbed long balls in three consecutive games this week, including one to lead off Monday’s game against Quad Cities.

The Red Sox barely got to see him before they traded him away for Gagne. Trust me, Theo would not make that trade again.

  176. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

I don’t think the Yanks are willing to find out if Chase Wright is ready just yet…especially after rushing him last year. Ouch.

  177. m4rk6 July 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Pffth. Just pretty much ignore any post that has Teixeira in it because none of it makes sense.

  178. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

They won’t throw Wright against the Angels.

  179. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

I don’t get the Teixeira talk. Where would be play in the field/lineup this year?

  180. S.o.S.27 July 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Damn ray. I was joking. I never answered all c’s. But I did narrow it down to two answers and flipped a coin. Some of these gm’s are like blind squerrells finding a nut. Im with you bro. FYI, I was a good student at school. Always sat by the smart person in class. As Todd Marinovich said one time. “I have math this year?”.

  181. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I guess we’re also not going to see Melancon this year…and Bruney does not appear to be ready yet.

  182. m4rk6 July 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

After rushing several pitching prospects into the majors and watching most of them get burned, I think (hope) the front office learned its lesson.

I guess actually having prospects is so new to them, they don’t know what to do. :P

  183. sunny615 July 29th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

And you just said – he wouldn’t do that trade again. So yes, that was my point.

  184. Bronx Jeers July 29th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

If the dodgers could get Tex, which they wont, why would they give him up for Alex Gonzales. Torre would probably want his old buddy Jeter. But the way he’s played this year I doubt that they would want him and his 40 mil + over the next 2 years.
    Stop the insanity!

Not to all: In no way do I think any of this will happen so dont attack me.

  185. S.o.S.27 July 29th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

“Could Chase Wright step in after a start or 2 in Scranton and do better than Ponson?”

I think he’s probably still shell shocked from that outing vs. the sox. He would have to go to a shrink for rehab first.

  186. TKinDC July 29th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

    Sunny and Ray –

boston.com has a slide show featuring Theo’s in-season deals over the years. It wasn’t all that enlightening, but the sight of Byun Hun Kim in with a big red B on his hat did make me a little hot ;)

  187. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

    SoS27,

I think sending him to Double-A was for that shellshock.

  188. sunny615 July 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

  189. Jorge Tabata July 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

    What about Vincent Padilla?

  190. Ian July 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

The Yankees need to slow down the use of Melancon this year. I haven’t checked his lines recently but no more of this multiple inning stuff for him. I wouldn’t mind him getting added to the 40 man and seeing him for 5-10 innings this September. Just to get him some experience.

  191. sunny615 July 29th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Padilla would be great if we wanted to bean everyone in the Boston lineup.

  192. Bronx Jeers July 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

“Wish Boston would trade for Kim again.”

And Gagne! He nearly blew the Division for them last year. Ahh those were good days my friends. Remember when Gagne was stinking up every game he entered and Jobamania was sweeping NY. Good times indeed.

  193. retire #51 July 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

teixeira is useless this year. Without damon in the field, we would have to rotate giambi and him in the DH spot. He should not even be considered until next year when giambi is gone. Of course getting tex and CC is quite a task. It would be one of the greatest offseasons ever. (minus the celtics)

    LF – Damon
    SS – Jeter
    RF – Nady
    3b – Arod
    1b – Tex
    DH – Matsui
    2b – Cano
    C – Posada
    CF – Melky

Gardner could platoon throughout the outfield to give damon a rest. (although he and betemit/gonzalez should be on the move (and melky after ’09 for the era of ajax)

    Then:
    1: CC
    2: Wang
    3: Joba
    4: Hughes
    5: pettite

bullpen: marte, robertson, edwar, melancon?, rivera, veras, cox?

    = World Series

  194. m4rk6 July 29th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I wouldn’t want Melancon pitching this September. We’re already playing catch up as it is. No reason to put an untested arm in there. And isn’t he catching up on his innings limit this season?

Sometimes, you don’t get the full story from the box score. I have no problem when he pitches 3 innings, given it’s usually on ~25 pitches! Heh.

  199. NongEyeJon July 29th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

If Pavano cameback this year and helped us win the W.S. Would he still be one of our worst signings ever?

  201. TurnTwo July 29th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

    Stark’s latest:

“there are indications now that the Dodgers and Yankees have “flirted” with the Braves on Teixeira in the last 24 hours, said an official of one team that spoke with the Atlanta brass.

According to teams in this mix, the Braves aren’t necessarily insisting on getting a first baseman back, but they’ve made it clear that’s their preference. And if they don’t get a first baseman in return, they still are prioritizing a big-league-ready bat as the centerpiece of any trade.”

  217. Bronx Jeers July 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

retire 51 has got it goin on. Maybe not so much in the bullpen. Marte is due 6 mil next year although he might sign a 2 year for 8 or 9 mil. I read in the Post today that Hal said that the the wallet is definitely open this offseason for the likes of Tex and somebody like CC if not CC himself(I like Sheets as well) . The Yanks probably have to sell off all those 300,000$ suites and 2,500$ seats so it is in their best interest to put a more reliable product on the field for next year.

  218. Catherine July 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I think the Yankees should try and package something to get us Russell Martin, its a stretch but the guy’s all-star game defense alone sold me on him haha. I can dream big, the guys a gamer.

  219. YankeesBen July 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Even if pavano pitches all 4 games in the world series that we win, i’ll be happy, but his signing would still be a bust,

  220. Jeremy July 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

    I’d be surprised if:

    (a) The Yankees did anything to help another team rather than help themselves.
    (b) The Yankees refused to make a trade with the Dodgers because they’re the Dodgers. The Yankees have less to fear from giving a ML-ready player to the Dodgers than any AL team and many NL teams. Is this supposed to mean that the Yankees hold a grudge against Torre and therefore won’t trade with the Dodgers? Because that would be a pretty stupid claim.
    (c) The Yankees refused to trade A-Gon, who is probably just a utility infielder at best, if they could get something useful in return.

The E tickets are accepted but you have to trust the seller as he can sell as many e tickets as he wants for the same seat. Thursday’s not a big game so I doubt he’s swindling you. I sold some email playoff tickets a couple of years back and gave the buyer my cell # if there was a problem.

  284. Real World July 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

The Sox would love to have Texiera, but it’s simply not a match. Where would he play, or who would he bench, is the problem. He can’t DH cuz you got Ortiz there. If he moves to 1st he benches Youkilous, who could play 3rd but then Lowell would be on the pine. The match just isn’t there.

The Yankees won’t trade what it takes to get Tex. Tex is a type A free agent. He’s going to net 2 picks for Atlanta if they keep him. So the prospects have to be more valuable than the picks. Also, if he comes here, that means a log jam at DH. Two of Damon/Nady/Abreu/Giambi/Matsui would be on the bench. If Matsui comes back, then one of the 4 would be pine bound, unless Damon moves to center field, which isn’t happening since he can barely survive left. Forget Tex.

According to Peter Gammons, the Red Sox are in on Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden. The Rangers have the game’s best catching surplus, and it’s resulting in plenty of inquiries.

Teagarden, 24, is hitting .234/.348/.404 in 53 Triple A games. He’s dealt with elbow soreness in the past, but he’s healthy now.

  294. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger) July 29th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Here’s the danger of dealing for Tex or keeping him in Atlanta’s case.

If he signs with a team like the Orioles in the off season who are rumored to be willing to open the vault for the hometown boy AND the Orioles 1st round pick is in the top 15 picks, then the team that loses him does not get that first round pick and instead gets the sandwich picks where the player talent is less than earlier in the first round.

So Atlanta can’t go into negotiations expecting 2 legitimate 1st round pick type talent.

They’re going to get one solid prospect like a Tabata and they’ll get some other pieces.

As for the Yankees needing him, I wouldn’t touch him right now and you know I’m all on board with trading kids for vets.

I just think that 1b is the least of our problems. We need starting pitching and we should use our assets whether it be prospects or cash to fortify this rotation for the stretch run.

Anyone counting on Hughes/Wang/Kennedy to fortify the rotation this season is dreaming.

We need one more solid pitcher and I hope Cashman can find one before the deadline.

  320. Blargh July 29th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

2 years away is not a problem at all
We still have Posada for another 3 whole years
Molina’s still signed through next year

If we really, really need a catcher after next year as a stopgap until Jesus is ready (assuming he’ll still be a catcher then), then we might as well throw money at Bengie Molina’s face then for 2010 (his current contract runs out after ’09).

  321. retire #51 (time to shave the 'stache) July 29th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

the post posada era could be a lot sooner than we think. also, montero is still looking like a 1b. if he can become a good catcher then great. Romine could be a solid prospect. regardless both are still in low a.

  322. gayle July 29th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

My personally if we need to get a catcher i would wait til the offseason rather than now, if he is available now he will be available in the off season and the price may be better at that point

I wouldn’t do that. Morrow for Melancon straight up yeh, Melancon and Cox (who’s robbing who here ?)

And in the case of Saltalamacchia we have seen it the hardest position to shore up is catcher (especially one that can hit) We need to have a back up plan incase Montero or Romine don’t pan out. Think if Montero gets hurt or Romine sdtarts struggling the catching position gets hit. Salty for IPK or Horne would be smart since or depth is full of pitchers and in the offseason most likely the FO will look to buy 1 ace in the market.

  324. V July 29th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

  331. Matt-LI July 29th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Forget Salty. Max Ramirez can actually catch and will remain at that position. Salty probably won’t end up being a MLB catcher (he will move to first) and Ramirez has shown flashes of being able to handle MLB pitching fairly well.

And its not like we are down on Montero, because none of us are. We all just know that he will grow to probably be our future 1B. And I don’t mean weight wise, like Miggy Cabrera or something. He just has a lot of natural growing to do and will be too big to play the position.

Salty’s stock is low, you read reports teams are looking at Laird and TT first and that’s not because he’s not available.

They should trade Melancon for a top starter if they can’t get Tex. We have enough in the pen.

This makes absolutely no sense, where the hell does he play this year ? so you take the DH away from Damon and Matsui when he returns ..and you know he’s going FA, plus the guy you want to deal Melancon that’s Mo’s successor.

  334. V July 29th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

  339. Dr. J July 29th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I’m not sure it is smart to trade Kennedy now… then we would have gotten rid of 4 insurance policies for Rasner/Ponson, having lost Karstens, Ohlendorf, McCutchen, and then Kennedy. Aceves is the only legit guy left. Wang is probably not going to be back until late in the playoff chase, and they will be very cautious with Hughes. Then we have come full circle and will be dependent on Pavano. Again… Rasner and Ponson have long surpassed their expiration date.

If we get another pitcher like a Washburn/Lowe, I’m all for it. I don’t think Kennedy has a long term future with us, but this year he could be very important.

Another starter is far more of a pressing need than a catcher, who probably won’t even stay at catcher.

  340. Del The Funkee Homosapien July 29th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

“The pen is loaded. Melancon should be moved now while his value is high. We should learn our lesson from not trading Kennedy and Hughes and Horne.”

Horne, I’ll give you. His stock has fallen fast.

I’m still curious as to why everybody is writing off IPK and Hughes so quickly though. IPK is a small sample size in the majors and Hughes is younger than 11/18 pitchers that were in the FUTURES GAME. Maybe some people forget how young these guys are and how it takes time to develop pitchers. Patience is a virtue that most people on here don’t seem to have. You think Dodgers’ fans are begging for Kershaw to be traded right now? How about Billingsley when he first struggled in the majors? Organizations have to have patience and since they do, the fans should as well.

Were going to acquire CC in the offseason, you have Hughes, Sanchez, Joba, Pettitte, maybe Wang and that Brackman kid…again a 2 MRP for 1 makes no sense. Especially when that one is my future CL.

    Matt –

I’m generally with you, but the way IPK performed early this year left people with the impression that he was not able to compete at this level. He seemed afraid to throw strikes.

He needs to come back and silence that criticism with strong results – until his does, I would be happy to trade him for value.

  354. Matt-LI July 29th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

    TK

Depends on what we are trading him for. I liked what I saw last year from IPK and I know he still has it in him to perform that way. He is bat shy and just not aggressive enough this year. Young pitchers always feel that they have to make the perfect pitch in every situation. I still think IPK has it in him to be a solid #3, or very good #4 in the majors.

  363. Fredo Corleone July 29th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

“The following is a list of pitchers that were successful and healthy after Billy Beane dealt them:”

    You forgot Dan Haren.

  364. Doris From Rego Park July 29th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

apparantly the deal on the table is Coke, Melky + a B level prospect of the royals choice

  365. Russell NY July 29th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

“It is a sad truth but Molina is a better catcher than anyone you could currently trade for.”

If Molina was 20 lbs lighter and had a .20 higher average he would be among the elite lol

  366. Doris From Rego Park July 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

also, dodgers are very interested in manny

  367. CUYanks July 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I would do that probably, but then does Gardner play CF full time?

  369. Fredo Corleone July 29th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

“apparantly the deal on the table is Coke, Melky + a B level prospect of the royals choice”

    Makes ZERO sense.

    BTW, Coke is a B level prospect…..maybe.

  370. retire #51 (time to shave the 'stache) July 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

haha if that is true cashman is god, my guess is kennedy might be in the mix. (also i get the feeling cashman isnt very high on coke, clearly wants to deal him). This sounds way too good to be true. i would imagine kennedy might be in the mix. still melky/kennedy/coke would be a steal for the yanks in my opinion. I can’t see us getting him. but i hope

  371. V July 29th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Rasner is better than Washburn. We dont need him.

  372. Karen July 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

That Post rumor about Washburn for Melancon is an absolute farce.

Why would the Mariners want the Yankees’ “future closer candidate” when they already have closer JJ Putz, Brandon Morrow (who as someone else noted is being slated for starting rotation duty), AND the kid they just drafted in June, closer candidate Josh Fields?

Yeah, maybe JJ is one of the 25 who’s on the block, like Raul Ibanez too. But thanks to the wonky draft philosophy of the recently departed Bill Bavasi, they got a kid who’s nothing BUT a reliever, and has the mindset and tools to be a closer.

  373. Bilbo July 29th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Keppinger is a stud Brando. Nice small sample size. The guy is dead weight. Surprised you aren’t clamoring for Hall again. Again. Brando’s hearts in the right place.

  374. Fox July 29th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

The Yanks should have gotten Haren.

  375. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Johan HR count: *18) (X-factor my ***) July 29th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Bilbo is your butt sore ?

  376. Crosetti July 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Cashman robbed the Pirates for Xavier Nady?

You must be kidding! You just have to see the poor guy suddenly forgot how to hit!

  377. ANSKY July 29th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    bigjf –

There was Teixeira to Boston talk on the radio? I don’t see it happening. They already have YouLickUs at 1B, Mike LowLife at 3B and El Poppy Seed at DH. They’re each pretty good at what they do, especially if you include being a whining pussy on Youk’s job description. Where they gonna put Tex on that team?

Well … I suppose he couldn’t play LF any worse than Manny already does …

    Ain’t gonna happen.

  378. MoBoy(aka McLovin) July 29th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

I heard Youk ccould move to left field.

I hope Manny leaves.Even though Tex is younger then Manny he can’t replace that bat in that line-up.

Surpised Pete hasn’t gotten the line-ups yet.

  379. Jeter2007 July 29th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

    youk can play lf

i’d rather face tex than manny anyway

  380. Nick July 29th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

    Joba for Martin. >_>
    Fair?

  381. DLev July 29th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Molina has been terrific this year. The team ERA with him catching is something like 3.5. With Moeller and Posada it’s 4.6. That is not a coincidence. If the Yankees were to replace him with a good hit, lousy or even decent pitch-handler, they will be out of the race in 3 weeks. He’s gotten terrific work from Mussina and Chamberlain and Pettite, and even though everyone is complaining how Ponson and Rasner have nothing, they’ve been credible too. The bullpen is better than it has been in years, and while some of that is new arms, a lot is Molina.

As much as I love Jorge, when they get him back next year the team ERA will shoot back up. They’d better get Sabathia if they want to use him behind the plate instead of Molina.

  382. MoBoy(aka McLovin) July 29th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Well the Angels got Tex from the Braves for two prospects.Keith Law reported that.

  383. Bart July 29th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

That is chicken$%^% – I’d like to throw at cabrra’s head

if he didn’t want to pitch to ARod an intentional would have workd —– the butthead had a 5 run lead
