Ramirez move may be in the works

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 30, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As significant as the Pudge Rodriguez move could be, the big news for the Yankees in the next 19 hours could be whether the Red Sox trade Manny Ramirez.

Boston is involved with complicated discussions with Florida (and possibly Pittsburgh) on a multi-player deal that would send Ramirez to the Marlins and possibly Jason Bay to Boston. I have heard literally 10 different versions of this deal.

Ramirez, as everybody knows, murders Yankee pitching. His departure would be welcome news at River Ave. and East 161st Street.

In the end, maybe nothing happens. That usually is the case with Manny. John Henry is said to want to try and work things out.

Meanwhile, the Mets are sitting out the trade deadline so far. As the Yankees make move after move, the heat is on Omar Minaya.

Tick … tick … tick

UPDATE, 9:16 p.m.: Check out what Manny told a reporter from ESPNDeportes today:

“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me. During my years here I’ve seen how they have mistreated other great players when they didn’t want them to try to turn the fans against them.

“The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don’t deserve me. I’m not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don’t have peace here.”

In other words: Get me out.

mets could sweet the WS and firing Omar the next day would be a good move. hes terrible.

As an experienced Yankee fan – I blanch at the sight of Manny.

    Jason Bay? I giggle!

“In the end, maybe nothing happens. That usually is the case with Manny.”

It’s a bit different this time since the contract is more favorable with the team option. Teams have been reluctant to give up too much for all the money Manny was owed. The Marlins would owe Manny very little.

But Boston -would- be stupid to move him. If the deal dies, it -has- to be because they pull it off the table.

  4. jimmy 27 July 30th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Rex hudler ” let’s go ahead score some more and let’s hear the sox fans turn on their team”
other guy ” yeah they may not even stick around to hear “sweet Caroline” tonight”
this is great on so many levels

  5. TKinDC (have you hugged a prospect today?) July 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

How does the entire Red Sox team look with a big LAA footprint on their sternum?

Pretty GD Good to me! :)

  6. Tank July 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Mike Jacobs pulled from the Marlins game

Sox have Youkallis, Pirates have LaRoche… so I’m not sure where this is going.

  7. Mike NYY- Check out my blog July 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Bay is actually having a better year but Boston will give up more than its worth.

  8. YanksFanLV July 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

There isn’t a better day in baseball then when our beloved yanks win, and Boston gets their a$$ handed to them haha.

  9. Phil July 30th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

hmmm, only to be trumped by the Yanks deal for a starter;)

  10. Buzz July 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

“Sox have Youkallis, Pirates have LaRoche… so I’m not sure where this is going”

    Youk can move to LF

  11. Buzz July 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Manny is not pull from the game yet lets just see

  12. Enoch44 July 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

I don’t get some of the trades proposed where Manny goes to Fla for some prospects, then the sox flip the prospects for Jason Bay.

If those prospects could land Bay, while wouldn’t Fla just get Bay who younger, and signed to a reasonable contract for next year.

Getting Manny for a year on that team makes NO sense to me. What am I missing?

  13. bigjf July 30th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I’d love for this move to happen. I’ll take my chances facing Bay.

That said, I could see this move happening, if only since Manny has been more vocal now than ever, and also because he is showing his disdain a lot on the field.

  14. Patrick â„¢ July 30th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I still think the Yankees will get Jarrod Washburn. That trade just makes too much sense for them not to get it done. The Mariners would have to be dumber than heck to hang on to that guy. They are going to stink with or without him, they just have to decide if they want to pay 13 million dollars for an extra draft pick or two in 2009. I think the Mariners will blink and cut a deal with the Yanks.

I also think that Kennedy will be given another shot in the rotation. I’m sorry but Ponson and Rasner are not very good. I think Kennedy is better than both of them right now. A rotation of Joba, Pettitte, Mussina, Washburn, Kennedy is fine by me. Perhaps Aceves and/or Hughes come into play a bit later.

  15. Phil July 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

I think the Yanks will get someone better than Washburn.

  16. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--9-3) July 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Mike Jacobs played a lil outfield early on in his pro career

  17. Jeff Marx July 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Manny says he is “mistreated” by the Red Sox. I would love to be mistreated to the tune of $20 million per year.

  18. Confucius July 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Amazing how the Angels have turned it around against the Sox. 8-1 after this game. They could go 7-3 against us and still end up helping us in the standings. Though, obviously, that would be baaad m’kay?

  19. Buzz July 30th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

any reason why Jacobs was pulled?

  20. george July 30th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

i hope they trade him. Boston would lose a ton of the swagger they had in their recent unusual spurt of winning. and of course i’m so sick of Manny/Papi destroying the Yankees.

  21. YanksFanMan (2009 Farnsworth return at reduced price!) July 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Go ahead Red Sox…you never wanted Manny. Trade him…you know you want to. And the Mets might want some mysterious player named Pavano…sounds good to me.

  22. Joe from Long Island July 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

If Jacobs went to Boston, then Youkilis would move to LF.

    And no Bay to Boston.

Mike Jacobs is a nice player, but he’s no Manny.

  23. Russell W July 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

The Red Sox could get God in exchange for Manny Ramirez and I would be happy. Please get him out of Boston!

  24. David Cone's Labrum July 30th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Looks like the Jacobs move was a double switch?

  25. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

someone was saying jacobs gets pulled a lot in later innings for defensive purposes

  26. JR Yankees July 30th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

I posted this in the previous thread too:

Cantu usually moves from 3B to 1B in the late innings because Cantu is a hack at 3B. Amezaga or somebody else replaces Cantu for defensive purposes. Mike Jacobs is the odd man out always.

I honestly believe this is nothing to get worked up about.

  27. TKinDC (have you hugged a prospect today?) July 30th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

“I think the Mariners will blink and cut a deal with the Yanks.”

I absolutely agree Patrick – and I would guess that Cashman will give them a declining return to get their butt in gear – like every start he makes for you is $300K off our offer.

That should keep a spark under them.

  28. Jeff NJ July 30th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Manny’s right, the Red Sox do not treat their aging stars well. Manny is such a jerk though, it’s hard to be too sympathetic to his plight.

  29. Russell W July 30th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

With our luck, Pavano will go to a new team and dominate. Yanks are just going to trade away Pavano. He will have value, about as much as Garcia I’m guessing.

  30. Buzz July 30th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

hey manny wont go for the all time rbi record aganist the yankees

  31. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

if mannys traded to the marlins, the deal is going to include willingham or hermida

  32. Josh Johnson July 30th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I have to agree with Manny on this one. The Red Sox don’t know how to treat their great players, especially the examples Manny used. Nomar and Pedro were Red Sox Heroes, but the Red Sox chewed them up and spit them out when they were finished with them.

  33. Confucius July 30th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

“If those prospects could land Bay, while wouldn’t Fla just get Bay who younger, and signed to a reasonable contract for next year.”

Manny for this season gives them a much better chance at a title than Bay for this and next season. The Marlins are trying to win one now when they’re this close to first going into August. You don’t know if they’ll be in the same position next year and Jason Bay certainly doesn’t ensure it.

  34. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

i dont care who goes to boston, i would love to not face manny ever again. at least until the angels sign him next year

  35. Corey July 30th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Neither Hermida or Willingham will scare me when they step in the batters box. Any trade Boston does for Manny ruins their offense, period.

  36. Phil July 30th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

“With our luck, Pavano will go to a new team and dominate. Yanks are just going to trade away Pavano. He will have value, about as much as Garcia I’m guessing.”

Gonna be tough to do on a 45 pitch count.

    ESPN~
As the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates discuss a possible three-way deal for Manny Ramirez, the sides also are discussing lefty reliever John Grabow’s moving from Pittsburgh to the Red Sox. The current sticking point, according to a well-placed source, is that the Marlins want the Red Sox to add a prospect to their take in the deal.

  38. jimmy 27 July 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Definitely great… but Hudler and Physioc – if that is who is calling the game – are brutal to listen to when playing the yanks. They always manage to adopt that david vs. goliath angle… and how the big bad yanks are supposed to win every game, so if you beat them then hallelujah, but if you lose then it’s because NYY has the highest payroll, etc. Actually Hudler’s not too tough on the yanks because of his history, but Physioc irritates me something awful

  40. Global Warming July 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

  41. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Read this as though ‘Darth Vader’ was talking:

The Sox of Boston will drained of their ‘force’ when they lose the Jedi Ramirez… the Empire will be empowered & the Nation of Sox will be defeated… it’s only a matter of time now… come now young Lester – join the Empire and we will be undefeated!

  44. Mike NYY- Check out my blog July 30th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I don’t see how this makes sense for anybody involved except Pittsburgh.

Bay is clearly not Manny although he`s a very very good player. Also, I don’t understand why the Marlins couldn’t afford to pay Miguel Cabrera’s salary and yet they`re willing to take on Manny’s salary.

The Red Sox did the right thing by not going to 4 years for Pedro, Damon, and Nomar was a boorish brat, exhibiting the same as Manny is now.

I would think the Red Sox made the righ move with all of them.

The unfortunate thing is that veteran players feel that their teams owe them.

  47. Reality Check July 30th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Melancon in first AAA inning: 1-2-3, all ground outs.

I gotta say Manny has a point. Seeing how the Yankees have handled veterans Posada and Rivera versus how Boston handled Nomar, Pedro and Ramirez; let’s just say I’m happy to root for a class organization.

  57. Yankees Ben July 30th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

  58. BBFan July 30th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

So now the Sox want a lefty out of this and the fish want a prospect in addition Manny? Sounds like it’s getting more complicated than it needs to get, which could deal a deathblow to the whole thing. This should be about the Sox moving Manny once and for all, not about their using Manny to fill every need.

  60. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--9-3) July 30th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

  66. ET2012 July 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Great Trade! I think that the Pudge trade has potential also for next year. Remember Posada is coming off serious shoulder surgery. Chances are he will not be 100% and could not catch every single game.

Couple of ideas. Next year Pudge could share catching with Jorgie, as well as first base. They could alternate. When one is catching, the other could play 1b. That would provide a much better tandem they have now. They can keep Molina as the 3rd string catcher.

In 09 the Yanks should keep Bobby and keep the outfield as it is now, but use Damon as the 4th outfielder and alternate him and Matsui at DH. That would be quite a lineup with both speed, power and experience. It would also help if Damon could learn to play some 1b which I think he has been doing already.

Officials from teams around the sport are beginning to hear details about the structure of the Manny Ramirez deal. According to one of them, the three players the Red Sox are seeking from the Marlins for Ramirez are Jeremy Hermida, pitcher Ryan Tucker and big-time outfield prospect Mike Stanton. However, the two sides also have discussed substituting Josh Willingham for Hermida.

  69. Tank July 30th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

    per MLBTR

8:29pm: Here’s the latest. MLB.com says we’re moving closer to the three-team deal. The Pirates could receive a minor leaguer from the Red Sox. Dejan Kovacevic says the Pirates would receive four or more prospects for Bay, as well as Hermida. John Grabow could end up in Boston or Florida. Perrotto says it could be expanded to have Jed Lowrie go to Pittsburgh and Jack Wilson to Boston. The Bucs also like Red Sox prospect Hunter Jones.

Jason Bay playing LF would be far better for Boston than Manny playing LF.

Jason Bay batting in the Sox lineup instead of Manny would be far better for NY (and the rest of the AL) than for Boston.

Sox fans I know have been sick of the Mantics for a while, but the SOB keeps destroying Yanks pitching so they say they can live with it. I have a feeling they’ll say good riddance. It’ll be easier for them to swallow now that Ortiz is healthy again.

Not that I’m expecting it nor that I think that would happen at least in the near future, but … if you think losing Damon to NY was tough for them to swallow, imagine if THAT guy signed with NY.

there is rumor out there that jacobs is out because hes getting traded for a catcher either greg zaun or molina (not jose but bengie!)

yea i can see that the giants need a first baseman and they were also asking for a power bat if they were gunna trade someone

  98. Jimmy 27 July 30th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

    manny’s last sox at bat?????????
    really?

  99. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

sox arent getting much for prospects, theyre downgrading their outfield and picking up a mediocre middle reliever. basically the pirates leftovers after we robbed them blind

  100. Doris From Rego Park July 30th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

isnt it interesting how tom verducci is silent so far? IMO, he is the best “national” baseball guy out there

  101. SJ44 July 30th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Jason Bay is not a good defensive OF.

CB had his OF metrics the other day and they weren’t pretty.

Bay is like a lot of guys on bad teams at the deadline. Horribly overrated.

If you are the Yankees, you would substitute Jason Bay for Manny Ramirez in their lineup every day of the week.

I mean, come on, let’s get serious, Bay isn’t anything close to Manny Ramirez. Maybe he is the the Manny that doesn’t show up and play. But, to the real Manny? Not even in the same ballpark as a player.

  102. Buzz July 30th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

are they booing manny in boston?

  103. Jorge Tabata July 30th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Aside from the credibility factor, how does trade help the Marlins? Don’t they already have an explosive offense? They need pitching, they have the 5th worst ERA in baseball.

Of Course, adding Manny would help them, but would it really elevate them any higher than Phillies territory?

  104. michelle(long time reader, Not so Seldom Poster) I Love It's Its July 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

havent heard anything on this coast about bengie being traded…and he is listed as in the lineup – that would be a good trade for the giants…

  105. Doris From Rego Park July 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

no, they are saying “boo-urns, boo-urns”

  106. Yankees Ben July 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Matt Carson is a big surprise, he’s hitting 311, plays a solid center field and has the arm to play right. I think its worth keeping an eye on him.

  107. pat July 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Don’t think the Sox would go Barry but I thought they’d never trade Manny. Bonds should be able to handle left field at Fenway. Not sure how well he would handle it on the road though.

  108. Mike NYY- Check out my blog July 30th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

If they`re booing Manny in Boston then we know things are looking good.

    Now we just need Washburn.

  109. Doris From Rego Park July 30th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

this could be a great day… yanks win big, mets are about to lose, ditto the sox, and manny could be headed to the NL

  110. Jon July 30th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

what a great night. the only way this could possibly get better (assuming the manny deal goes through) is if we somehow traded melky for peavy

  111. michelle(long time reader, Not so Seldom Poster) I Love It's Its July 30th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

    Bengie’s take on being traded…

Jul 30 The San Jose Mercury News reports San Francisco Giants C Bengie Molina, whose name has been linked to trade rumors, doesn’t want to leave the Bay Area. “The Giants committed to me, and I want to stay committed to them,” said Molina. “I have a job to do here.”

  112. Phil July 30th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Ortiz just went from second to third in 5.4 on a wild pitch. I guess they’ll deal him later tonight.

  113. TKinDC (have you hugged a prospect today?) July 30th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

LF in the Fens doesn’t really demand a ‘plus’ outfielder.

I know my hopes are exceeding rationality here – But Manny kind of looks like a Pirate to me! :)

  114. Reality Check July 30th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Interesting that Phil Cike (who almost went in the Pitt trade) is now being used in relief at Trento (when he had been used all year as a starter). I believe we are seeing the birth of a LOOGY (who throws up to 94).

Marlins, Red Sox, Pirates Talking Manny Trade
By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 8:52pm CST]
    ALMOST DONE
8:50pm: Will Carroll believes the Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a Red Sox-Pirates-Marlins trade even though the teams haven’t agreed on the prospects. Here’s how he sees it:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

  121. sherry July 30th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Yankee fans, lets be realistic. You don’t get a catcher for the stretch run to the playoffs, especially when your throwing Rasner, Ponson, and Hughes and Kennedy when they come back. You go out and get an upgrade in your pitching staff which Washburn is better than the above four pitchers. I don’t like this move at all. Will the Yanks be a little better offensively? Probably. That will not offset their pitching woes. They better get a pitcher tomorrow.

  122. TKinDC (have you hugged a prospect today?) July 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

“why is joe west’s nickname “country”?”

    something to w/ sheep

  123. Syracuse Gary July 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

  124. Ian July 30th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Coke is close to his innings limit I believe. Thus being used as a reliever.

Hey everyone. I’m posting on basically every blog I know. I am in shock. Absolute shock. I’ve been bashing Manny all day long saying that he is weighing down the team (you should see today’s game, no Sox player has his heart in it). But wow. He is gone. Off to the NL. He flew out in his last ever Sox AB.

  145. Steve July 30th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Why would the pirates get involved in this? There is no reason whatsoever to give up Bay and Grabow for Hermida and poopoo platter of prospects. And they say that we fleeced the Pirates. The Pirates are fleecing themselves here.

  146. Confucius July 30th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Florida would get a huge boost here as discussed. But the Pirates would be the real winners. I’d assumed the Sox would get Stanton and use him as tradebait down the road. The Pirates get him and Hunter Jones? Swapping out Hermida for soon-to-be FA Bay? Nice haul.

  147. bphill July 30th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

The Manny Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, according to a source. Because it’s a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.

Peter Gammons doesn’t think it will happen.

Thanks for the response. I’m still sadly in shock. I’m sorry but I can’t understand how you guys acquired some of the best players up for trade while giving up basically nothing. Meanwhile, we’re giving up a future HOF with three of our best minor leaguers for two average players.

I give props to you guys. Your team has been playing great ball and has made great deals. Cheers to hopefully knocking out the Rays and returning to the normal top two of Sox-Yankee.

*Add on: I do have to say that I’m hoping for this to turn out like the Nomar deal. The Sox gave up a great player in exchange for some average guys who played good ball. The whole chemistry of the team changed and started to pull things together.

It’s funny though, I thought if any trade was going to be made, it would be to replace Papi due to his wrist. Not because Manny is leaving town.

  184. PittsburghYankeeFan July 30th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Yes, Red Sox Fan–don’t take it personally.

it just tells you how much we thought Manny meant to the Sox–especailly as a Yankee killer.

Thank goodness for us that he’s such a meshugganah.

  185. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club) July 30th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

“Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox, Pirates and Marlins have agreed to a three-team Manny Ramirez deal, pending Ramirez waiving his no-trade clause and league approval.
Carroll, not normally one of our preferred sources, has the Red Sox getting Jason Bay and John Grabow; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates picking up Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from Boston.”

It’s a okay move for Boston. It really depends on how the drop in production from Manny to Jason Bay (and whatever value is provided by Grabow, who with Lopez so effective, may be overkill) is balanced by the benefit of removing the distraction and potentially poor play of Manny down the stretch. Certainly, looking forward, Bay is a better bet than Manny.

Bay’s a fine player. The Red Sox are very fortunate to have him, if this deal goes down. He certainly doesn’t scare me the way Manny does. Bay is also a much, much better defender than Manny.

So really, we’ll have to see how this plays out.

I like Pittsburgh switching Bay with Hermeida. If Jeremy only stays healthy, he’ll be an elite lefty bat. He’s younger and more cost-controlled, so the Pirates can count on him for longer, possibly long enough to pull themselves into contention with a base of good lefties.

  186. Red Sox Fan July 30th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Jon – keep gloating by all means. This is YOUR blog after all! I would certainly be celebrating if the Yanks decided to trade away A-Rod.

I do have an awful feeling though that this could be a bad blow to the Sox season.

With the way things were going with Manny and Boston, they were forced to do something. Anything. As an organization you can’t keep turning a blind eye to the things he has been doing.

This may help the chemistry, but Manny brought a lot to that team.

While Ortiz is still there, you really have to wonder if he will be anything like he has been.

  190. Red Sox Fan July 30th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Yea “For $13…” that is my main concern – Papi. I have dearly missed that 3-4 punch of Papi and Manny. We have had that back for less than a week and now it may be gone.

It would also help if our bottom three could start hitting. That’s what is really hurting us.

  191. bkight July 30th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

The Sox do this every year. We get our hopes up and then Manny goes on a tear and hits everything for 2 months. He is pouting now, but if the deadline passed, he would accept his fate and play ball.

If this trade does go thru, the Sox are much worse and Big Papi lost his protection. Chemistry is over-rated. Have the Eagles or Cowboys gotten much better since TO left Philly?

  192. deadrody July 30th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

bkight – of course he would. And if not for Manny, the Sox would STILL be looking for their first WS win since 1918. Manny is absolutely right, the Sox DON’T deserve him.

  193. Red Sox Fan July 30th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Bknight – Yes, the Sox and Manny always do this little dance, but it has never been this close. And if you have watched the Sox played for the last few games, I would not say chemistry is overrated. The team is clearly lacking some drive and looks … well … tired.

Deadrody – With Manny’s recent antics in mind, I am more tempted to say that Manny doesn’t deserve the Sox. When your fans are questioning if your knee is really hurt or why you didn’t swing that damn bat in Yankee Stadium, something is clearly wrong.

    Hey Angel,

I mentioned on an earlier thread that I was at the game last night. I know things can change but right now I really do think the Angels are the team to beat and are better than both the Sox and the Yankees. I will watch with a lot of interest this weekend to see how you guys do against the Angels.

Indeed Manny does this every summer, but it seems more intense this year. At the start of the season Manny actually seemed quite content and was even granting interviews to the press.

I think superagent Scott Boras has a track record of causing a lot of unrest with his clients……as he did with Arod and now with Manny.

Manny says it is not about the money….gee…never heard that one before from a player in the middle of negotiations. I Manny is doing every thing he can to get moved out of Boston right now. I think many fans are ready to say good bye Manny!

I am impressed with the trades the Yankees have made in the last week. In my humble estimation you are definitely a stronger team than a few days ago and have addressed some of the needs the team has because of injuries.

    Red Sox Fan,
Why do you go on a Yankees blog anyway? Just Curious.

Boston always seems to have problems with their players. Pedro, Wade Boggs, Roger, Norman, Manny. Are players to blame or the franchise?

The Manny for Bay trade actually isn’t that bad for the Sox. I was looking at their stats this year and offensively they are very similar. Manny has a 142 OPS+ this year and Bay has a 137 OPS+. You take some points away to account for the transition to the AL, but then you add points because Bay is a better baserunner and is better on defense (-1 vs. Manny’s -15 for run differential playing LF)…Boston might not be getting better, but they may also not be getting too much worse.

Further, Bay would be staying with the Sox for an extra year, whereas Manny is guaranteed to be gone this winter.
