Is that Manny being a Marlin? Not yet

The Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates continue to work on a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to Florida, Jason Bay to Boston and assorted prospects to the Pirates. This one will go right down to the deadline.
Scott Boras will let the deal happen. That way Ramirez becomes a free agent and gets a new deal with the Mets or some other team.
No word yet on what the Yankees may do.
In other trade news:
* Sad day for the Yankees, as the always-crushed Arthur Rhodes was traded to Florida. Why teams have interest in that guy, we’ll never know.
* The Red have a deal in place to send Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox if he approves. Because it’s Ken Griffey Jr., it sounds big. But he’s at .245/.355/.432.

Just trade him already.
Go Marlins!
Griffey has approved the trade.
I don’t think Yanks make a trade by 4pm as teams are looking around and saying they don’t want to be fleeced by C-Money.
IPK needs to pitch on Friday.
Chet
Noooooo…not Arthur “Hit the” Rhodes! I love seeing him pitch…
yankee fans will enjoy this.
“(David Ortiz’s) reaction upon learning of the trade that sent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit for Rodriguez was telling. The DH’s mouth was agape, the same reaction of passers-by after Ortiz proceeded to pass the news along.
One of the first to reap the benefits of Ortiz’ newfound information was Manny Ramirez [stats], the player whose image had dominated the clubhouse televisions throughout the afternoon due to trade rumors. Ramirez’ reaction was similar to that of his teammate, mouthing words to the affect of, “Oh no!—
http://www.bostonherald.com/sp.....id=1110183
Probably because he’s got a lot of experience and has been pitching very well this season coming off of Tommy John surgery?
22 innings is not a large sample size, but he’s not as bad as you make him out to be…
mko, rhodes always gets killed by the yankees though. my fingers are crossed that the marlins made that trade to package him in the manny deal and ship him to boston
I also think we’re going for maybe 1-3 against LAA. Game 2 & 4 pitchers are Ponson & Rasner. That tells you all. Get pitcher and start him tomorrow.
peter did you hear that boras wanted to ask from the tigers some incentives for pudge for waiving his no trade clause, but pudge told him shove it i waana be a yankee so dont make problems!
If the fish get manny, i think unless the mets get someone good before the deadline, you will be seeing florida in october
If we do not get a SP these moves are worthless
You don’t make Oct with crap pitching.
Well, so do Bartolo Colon and Tim Wakefield. LOL. Still doesn’t make them bad pitchers…although Colon might not be as good as he once was.
The Marlins were looking for more relievers, so I doubt they’ll ship Rhodes out…would be nice though
Yankees would have to be happy with a split series…if it goes as expected they’re gonna have a very tough time today and on Sunday – Rasner vs. Lackey…
any chance the yankees land paul byrd?
tom verducci will be om WFAN shortly
They are dumb to trade Manny. Bay stinks.
“Yankees would have to be happy with a split series…if it goes as expected they’re gonna have a very tough time today and on Sunday – Rasner vs. Lackey…”
Sorry, I meant tomorrow (Santana vs. Ponson) and Sunday…
Arthur Rhodes? Oy vey.
Well, Manny the Marlin would be a hoot, regardless. He lives in Pembroke Pines, anyway, not too far from the stadium. And he won’t have to ever speak English again if he comes down here, either.
We dont need a starter. A starter, right now, is a luxary to us. Kennedy has been dominant is Scranton, and there are other options in the farm. What I hope we get is another bullpen guy for the 8th. If we get a starter, which I dont think will happen, I hope its Kyle Lohse.
Let’s hope not!
If Cash can’t get anybody by trade I say let someone from AAA start – Kennedy or someone else. Can’t be worse than Ponson…
We’ll be fine if we don’t get a starter I think, we’ve worked through having a shaky rotation before, and I think we can do it again.
Some W’s can be fashioned out of Ponson, Rasner, Aceves, Kennedy, and eventually Hughes.
Washburn isn’t THAT much of an upgrade. We shouldn’t sit here and think we’re getting a Cadillac when in fact its a Washing-Machine.
Apparently the Rays are talking Adam Dunn with the Reds. Maybe we do need to make another deal…
Crap pitching is not what the Yankees have. 3/5 guys in the rotation are stalwarts, mixing and matching the last 2 spots is what the team is going to do. The “rotate guys and figure out who is hot, who can excel where, etc.” has worked for the bullpen this year, and at this point it seems like that same method is going to be applied to the 4 and 5 slots in the rotation.
Kennedy, maybe external Washburn-type option, Aceves, Hughes, Pavano, that’s what you’re looking at, whoever pitches well will get to keep toeing the rubber. Also, I think Ponson will be out of the mix faster than Rasner, since the team can (presumably) option Rasner to AAA if necessary, but they’ll just have to DFA Sidney when the reaper finally comes for him.
Manny being Manny Part 5,762
http://bostondirtdogs.boston.c.....8_nesn.jpg
Why?
Our bullpen has been awesome, we got Marte to replace Farnsworth and ANYBODY from AAA is better than LaTroy…so I think we’re fine.
WOW don’t they think that’s a little too steep
Jon Heyman, SI.com:
“Ken Griffey Jr. has approved the trade sending him to the Chicago White Sox.”
ESPN and MLB.com are not on top of their game today and they should be. They still have the Griffey trade as breaking news and don’t even acknowledge that he’s already accepted the trade.
Our trade for a SP will come from our system. IPK will be up in a week, or when Aceves is done with his pitch counts and fully healthy again, he will have his shot. Unless Ponson, and/or Rasner really WOW us this weekend, their expiration date has come up.
Rhodes was lights out for a pretty good stretch in Seattle. The thing is, after a few years of solid middle relief work he kept trying to become a closer and just couldn’t do it. I know some people that met him; supposedly he’s a pretty nice guy, and was always popular with his teammates.
I’m sure the Yanks will still find a way to crush the M’s anyway, Rhodes or no Rhodes.
This site is usually a couple of hours ahead of ESPN.
SI is usually better though.
question. will the Marlins have the $20M option on Manny for 2009, or does that go away with the trade?
I know we had the option on Abreu for 2008 after a trade from Philly.
Are these contract specific type options, or what?
Something tells me that this Manny deal isn’t going to happen. I hope it does. I really really really do. but I don’t think it will.
Question:
I see that Pudge has chosen to wear #12. Would this future HOFer be deemed worthy enough to wear #21 or would this create a fanbase meltdown again?
Verduccci on FAN now
I dont know, maybe its me, but if Manny leaves the division, and Jason Bay replaces him, and maybe Adam Dunn comes…..I think i would sign off on that, thats how much Manny has destroyed the Yankees…Its a banner day if this comes down
saucy the option will still be there but seeing as how the marlins payroll is 22 million total, i think they may pass on picking that up. just a hunch
Verducci saying anything?
but they could pick up the option and then trade him (similar to Sheff 2 offseasons ago)? wouldn’t that be the smartest way to go?
probably p!ssing Boras off in the process
The Angels just got done absolutely obliterating the Red Sox (games pitched by Buchholz, Beckett, Daisuke I believe) and the Yankees intend to throw Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner at them for 2 of the 4 games. This might be the toughest series the Yankees will have all year (until they play the Angels again in LA).
God help us. No sweep, please.
Supposedly Manny will not accept the trade if the team is going to pick up his option. The only way he goes is if they agree to decline it at the end of the season.
he likes the irod deal but said molina has been a great receiver for the pitchers and its a question mark if irod can handle them the same way. said yanks will never kyle in september/october. washburn deal isnt dead, will likely come down to the last hour
verducci doesnt think mannys getting dealt
Not that they would, but technically, the Marlins could pick up Manny’s team options for the next 2 years. So the trade doesn’t really gaurantee 100% he’ll be a free agent yet.
But the Angels swept in Fenway. That usually leads to a “Boston Hangover”…
lets hope so!
“question. will the Marlins have the $20M option on Manny for 2009, or does that go away with the trade?”
it goes with him and his contract, but i believe he’s placing the condition on waiving his no-trade that the options will not be picked up by the team he goes to.
obviously, if he goes to Florida, there is no chance they’d pick up a $20 million option, anyway.
but, for example, if he went to the Mets, the only way he’d agree to waive his no-trade to go was if Minaya guaranteed Manny the Mets would not pick up the option for next year.
but they could pick up the option and then trade him (similar to Sheff 2 offseasons ago)? wouldn’t that be the smartest way to go?
probably p!ssing Boras off in the process
Good point about the Marlin’s payroll, Jon. Besides that even, I wonder if that would anger Manny enough to the point where he WOULDN’T waive his no trade clause? Then again this point may be moot since I heard he had to sign the papers 24 hours in advance (meaning the papers would have already been signed)
jon- he didnt say that. he said he thinks the manny deal WILL get done
“Supposedly Manny will not accept the trade if the team is going to pick up his option. The only way he goes is if they agree to decline it at the end of the season.”
Sorry, didn’t see this post when I wrote my last one… If that’s true, then I suppose it does just about gaurantee (based only on a handshake, I’m assuming) free agency.
“the red sox are going to try and make this happen no what they have to do”
Wow. Not sure why the font gods hate me. Sorry for the awkward bold printing in my previous post.
Brandon said Manny signed the papers yesterday.
doris, i wasnt listening to wfan, i was listening to the dan patrick show. i dont know when its from, but on there he was saying no way. must have been yesterday or something
You have to wonder how many phone calls are happening right now around the various GM’s.
verducci- seattle has been very tough to deal with
“saucy the option will still be there but seeing as how the marlins payroll is 22 million total, i think they may pass on picking that up. just a hunch”
Wasn’t their payroll a lot higher during their World Series years? Meaning, they have the money if they choose to spend it, no?
Again, moot if he’s making it a condition to agreeing to waive his no trade… But couldn’t they afford him if they wanted to?
Brandon said Manny signed the papers yesterday.
Yup that is a fact, I won’t deny that.
I agree with you, E-Man. I think the Manny trade talk is much ado about nothing.
Some reports out of Boston say Manny showed up early and cleaned out his locker, signed his approval papers, and left.
Approval from the Commissioner’s office is the next step.
the marlins payroll was higher in the world series years because john henry was running the team and offered some flexibility. now loria owns the team and he’s the cheapest guy on the planet
Verducci- “Yanks are close to trading for Zach Greinke”
(just kidding)
Griffey back in the American League. Great. Just great.
Manny must go to Florida. There are just way too many Yankee killers in the AL pennant race right now.
I bet Cashman’s phone is exploding, all 5 of them..
Has anyone heard what the Reds get in return yet
This Griffey deal makes no sense from the White Sox’s perspective. What are they going to do with him? I don’t think he can play CF anymore. If he becomes the DH, what do they do with Thome? Play him at first? This is truly a head scratcher.
If Manny doesn’t want to stay in Boston I can’t see Theo and co keeping him there.
I gotta go get my teeth prodded and poked at and still remain in good enough spirits to buy my mother a birthday card. Catch you all later.
Chris NY:
I read an article with some quotes from the Marlins owner today. He basically said that he just doesn’t want a big payroll because the stadium is empty anyway (even now that they’re still in contention).
If Boston put Manny in a helicopter, swung it around the east coast a little bit for a couple of hours, and then landed it at Fenway and told him that he has been traded to the Boston Red Sox… He would probably wouldn’t even know the difference.
Nick Massett and Danny Richar to Cin for Griffey Jr.
gayle:
The Reds are getting pitcher Nick Masset and minor league infielder Danny Richar in return.
If the Manny deal dies, looks like Pittsburgh will be the team to kill it. We’ll have to confiscate all those thank you cards we sent them for Marte and Nady.
Can’t say I blame them, though. Stanton -and- Tucker not in the deal now? What exactly are they getting? Florida can’t just do Hermida for Manny + Cash.
jermome from the bronx wants the yanks to trade for brad penny
the only thing better then Manny being traded is the Manny deal falling apart. they are in ruins.
“Some reports out of Boston say Manny showed up early and cleaned out his locker, signed his approval papers, and left.”
He also supposedly sold his condo in Boston and sold all his Sox memorabilia a couple years ago… I’ll believe it when I see it. I believe they’re seriously trying to get rid of him, as they have tried in the past. Whether or not they’ll get enough back this time to make it worth doing, remains to be seen. As others have said, the biggest difference this time is that he’s at the end of his contract instead of in the middle of it. Meaning, teams will take him for 2 months.
Matt-LI— Best constructed joke of all time on the LoHud.
The Red Sox don’t really need to trade Manny if it’s not a great deal for them. Manny isn’t the type who let his personal disappointment over not being dealt affect his performance on the field, is he?
jermome from the bronx wants the yanks to trade for brad penny
I’m sorry but that guy is an idiot/moron…he is never happy w/ any deals and it’s funny how he can’t even say Alfredo Aceves’s name plus in his world Arroyo is better than Washburn, truely the worst caller in WFAN today.
Jim Rome just reported that Jr. waived his no trade clause and was traded to the white sox.

Jim Rome just reported that Jr. waived his no trade clause and was traded to the white sox.
And in other breaking news, the giants won the superbowl
I can’t wait for Manny to begin the 2008 version of Operation Shutdown when the trade falls through.
mko, that makes me angry. teams like that get money from the Yankees (revenue sharing) and don’t even spend it. I can’t stand that, they should be forced to use it.
How will they ever fill their seats if they don’t field a better team, year after year. If I lived in Miami, I wouldn’t root for them either. Every time they have a good team and win a WS, they get rid of everyone.
The Dodgers aren’t sellers, why would they trade Penny? And why would we want him, he’s been awful this season…
If he actually *takes* the field…
thats why revenue sharing is bogus
“Brandon said Manny signed the papers yesterday.”
Reading this, I envision a scene similar to DB Sweeney as Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out struggling to write out his X on the confession.
The Marlins are on the verge of getting a new stadium.
Loria probably figures that if the team makes a good run at the end of the season, the chances are better for the local politicos to move forward with the deal. There’s also a lawsuit pending, which might be settled if they allow a vote on the deal, and that would also be affected by a nice surge from the team. (If Huizinga would have held on for another year, he’d have had his stadium.)
True, the stadium will be built on the old Orange Bowl site, making it even more inconvenient for the locals to get to, but if Loria and his midget ex-stepson David Sampson are going after Manny, that’s the back-story to keep in mind.
Twins dangling Boof Bonser now. Given how generous they’ve been to us, they’d probably want Cano, Marte, and a good AA prospect.
i’ll take boof for igawa and cash
If Griffey hits 245 in the NL that makes him a lefty hitting Richie Sexson (215 BA) without the good glove in the AL
Boof would be great in the bullpen, we really need to replace Farnsworth’s ability to give up the long ball.
Aw hell no!
If the Yankees acquire him I will not watch the games he pitches. I’m sorry, but I just can’t warm up to somebody with the name “BOOF”.
And his numbers are awful as well!
The Yankees won’t trade for crap pitchers, what good would that do?
“The Red Sox don’t really need to trade Manny if it’s not a great deal for them. Manny isn’t the type who let his personal disappointment over not being dealt affect his performance on the field, is he?”
He hasn’t been in the past. Consider that they put in on waivers (larglely to show him how little interest there was in him at $20M per season), had him traded to the Rangers for Arod, and discussed trading him to the Mets, all within the past 5-6 years. However, this time may be different. He has lost his teammates and a huge chunk of the fanbase. He’s intelligence-challenged, so he probably isn’t cognizant of the fact that shutting it down and quitting will hurt him more than it helps.
Red Sox have been sucking his toes prety much since he’s been there and now they’ve stopped. He doesn’t like it. I think they are better off moving him.
Griffey hitting 245 in the NL is equal to Richie Sexson (215 BA) without the good defensive glove in the American League not such a big deal
I dont see how the Red Sox expect to get Bay and Grabow for a rental of Manny whom isnt even a guarantee to actually play for your team. Not only that, but the Red Sox are in a poor negotiating position so how can they hold out for Bay? And I still dont see what benefit the Pirates get out of this entire deal. They arent getting Manny, they are giving up Bay and all they get are “prospects”. You have to figure they could get more for Jason Bay than just prospects.
Momentum is being made on the Manny deal, according to Olney. If they get Bay…oh man, the Bo Sox don’t strike fear into me as in the past…get it done!!!
Why don’t the yankees trade for boof boner. The twins will basically give him away to make room for liriano. They have too many starters and we could use a 5th starter that’s not ponson
We already have a Boof. Boof Ponson. Dont need another.
Manny is irreplaceable. And in the end I don’t think this deal will get done.
That said – if the Sox can actually trade him and get Bay and Grabow back they will have done very, very well for themselves.
That return would be very impressive given the terrible position Manny has put the Sox in. If Theo can actually pull that off he will have really made the best out of a bad situation – a situation in which most of his leverage was taken away.
Lots of rumors but in most of the proposed deals I’ve seen the Pirates are getting the short end of the stick. Not enough of a return for Bay if the Marlins aren’t sending Stanton back with the other players.
If the Marlins have made Stanton untouchable (which I believe has been their position on him for a while as he’s arguably their best prospect after Maybin and Miller) then Pittsburgh isn’t getting enough back – at least from the proposed deals.
As it is – if i were the Bucs I would not trade Bay unless I got back a potential front line starter back in the deal. They already have good outfield depth with McClouth and McCutcheon in place and Pearce ready to come up.
Bay’s the last valuable trade piece they have – the guy who could accelerate their rebuilding process by years if they get the right deal.
Right now I don’t see how this proposed deal is the one that will do that for them. The Sox and the Marlins (especially the Marlins) are doing comparatively better in this deal at the expense of Pittsburgh.
But in the end its Pittsburgh so all bets are off…
The only problem with Operation Manny Shutdown is that he is playing for a contract this year. In ‘06 he knew he was getting his 20M the next year and even the year after that.
It may become uncomfortable but I wouldn’t expect Manny to completely shut down again. In fact, I think he may become a bigger pain for us than he is now.
What about Lohse?
http://myespn.go.com/s/convers.....ry/3512452
12-3, the yankees need a starter… instead of paying washburn absurd amounts of money why not get lohse.
“they are giving up Bay and all they get are “prospectsâ€. You have to figure they could get more for Jason Bay than just prospects”
Didn’t you think the same about Nady and Marte?
I think the Yankees should swoop in and give the Pirates some prospects steal Bay. Then trade Abreu for Ramirez. Cashman can do it!! I have all the faith in him.
i’ll take boof for igawa and cash
I would rather keep Igawa. Seriously.
The Sox could deal directly with Florida. They have outfielders to cover his play, getting some decent prospects that they could possibly spin for Dunn.
I think the Sox have turned big time on Manny. For them to back out is still possible, but probably not in the best interests of their team. It will hurt them either way.
This deadline is worse than Dec. 24th on Fifth Avenue or a ‘burb Wal-Mart.
The Sox won’t move Manny for the sake of moving him. They know he’s aware that, if they keep him and decline his option, his performance this year directly impacts the contract he gets next year.
Manny may be miserable off the field but he has never shown any signs of letting his emotions affect him on the field. He will not shut down like Derrek Bell or Sheffield on the Brewers. He will play like someone hungry for a big contract and another ring and the Sox will put up with his behavior for a few more months.
My guess is the Sox are seeing if they can get some complementary pieces in the deal besides Bay, such as bullpen help. If they can, the deal goes forward. If they can’t, they keep a guy who is still a hugely productive player even if he is a head case.
The Cardinalds are looking for a bat and reliever for him. Who would you want to part with?
Lohse will get pounded in the AL, as he did with the Twins.
What about Lohse?
minus Dave Duncan is the 2nd coming of Jaret Wrong.
Brandon, I bet you are hoping the the Yanks acquiring Keppinger and getting rid of Betemit. lol, if they really do, you would be jumping for joy.
JR Yankee, I agree that if Manny stays in Boston, he will not shut down. In fact, I think he’ll go on a tear to boost his free-agent value. He won’t get the $20 million he thinks he can get, but he’ll be clutch.
The Griffey deal is especially strange because the White Sox already have productive players at LF, RF, and DH and the thought of Griffey in CF is absurd.
Anybody else realize that A-Rod leads the AL in avg.? Didn’t even notice…
Anybody else also realize that you don’t get jackshipp done at work the week of the trade deadline?
I think Manny will still put up his numbers, JR, but I think since he’s known as a pick-and-choose effort guy normally, that will only become more and more evident if he remains in Boston for 2 more months with hostility and awkwardness still swirling around him and the team. I guess my joke was more about that if it gets really ugly in Boston (which it might if he sticks around), Manny might let it roll off him by crawling into a shell so to speak.
Plus, I don’t think his performance over the next two months will change much about how much a team pays him next year. He has such a huge reputation as a hitter, and his numbers will still be there at year’s end regardless of where he ends up, that he will not lose too many dollars because of this fiasco.
“Manny may be miserable off the field but he has never shown any signs of letting his emotions affect him on the field.”
Jeremy, he sat and watched three fastballs down the middle from Rivera in a Yankees/Sox game. He benched himself with phantom injuries to avoid tough, hard throwing, right handed pitchers. He’s quit on his team in August…twice. Can’t say his actions don’t affect the on the field product. At least not this year.
Ken Griffey to the White Sox- so where do they play him CF??? Another White Sox trade in the works??
Manny goes to the Marlins with the understanding they won’t pick up his 20M club option. What a fool!! What if no team wants him @20M/year based on his antics. What if his ‘KNEE” acts up after the trade, let’s say October, and the MRI shows significant damage, needing surgery. He’s now screwed, because no one will want him until he proves himself healthy.
“why not get lohse.”
Because with his 12-3 record, the Cards are selling incredibly high. Lohse is not as good as a 12-3 record even in the NL. We’d have to give up too much.
Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but why are the Yankees not even talking to the Indians about Paul Byrd? It seems like he’d be a good fit, no? He makes less money than Washburn and is only signed through this year, and is another one of those “knows how to win” grizzled veteran types.
And I think the people running the Indians are a bit more competent then the idiots in Seattle, so they might be able to actually (gasp) work out a fair deal!
My understanding of this trade is that it has come down to Pittsburgh and Florida haggling over the prospects.
Bay is all the Sox are getting, and despite many tries from the Sox enablers in the media (who are letting their bias come through instead of steady reporting), the owner wants this done.
When the owner wants something done, it generally happens. Jason Bay is more ready than the two picks the Sox will get at the end of the season, and the Manny distraction will be over.
However, as was said on SOSH last night, Manny is the best Sox hitter in a generation. Too bad he’s such a meshugganah.
Pittsburgh wants to restock the farm after Littlefield screwed it up. This will take 1-2 seasons. The Pirates are planning for 2010. The Marlins have great prospects, and the Pirates want some of them.
This is all about the Marlins and Pirates now. The Sox are bystanders.
“Jeremy, he sat and watched three fastballs down the middle from Rivera in a Yankees/Sox game. He benched himself with phantom injuries to avoid tough, hard throwing, right handed pitchers. He’s quit on his team in August…twice. Can’t say his actions don’t affect the on the field product. At least not this year.”
Fredo,
You forgot to mention taking his sweet time getting to first on the no hitter Lackey was pitching. There is a reason why there is a saying Manny is being Manny.
Why bash Arthur Rhodes? I know you love delivering Op. Ed. more than just being a journalist, but Arthur Rhodes draws your ire, too?
And why are people still interested in him, Pete? Perhaps it is because 4 of the last 7 years he has had an ERA in the 1’s or 2’s, he is left handed, and has pitched in tons of big games. Sounds at least a little interesting, no?
Hope Red Sox get Bay for Manny. Bay will be a poor mans JD Drew, certainly not as scary at the plate like Manny
Does anyone have any insight on Gaby Hernandez, the prospect the Marlins gave to the Mariners for Arthur Rhodes? Just wondering for a comparison as to what Seattle’s expectations are for receiving prospects for their players…
CB,
Dead on right. Sox would be smart to make this deal. Bay is a better catch then the two draft picks and this yrs FA class in OF is very weak.
My guess is the hold up is Pitt. I figure they need at least 3 prospect to make this work for them. Otherwise, keep Bay and move him in off season.
I know keeping Manny makes them better this year, but will hurt them after he goes FA.
IMO:
The Sox are in a no win situation, they can’t replace his production, and keeping him now would be a huge distraction in the middle of a pennant race. They could give in and pick up his option, but I doubt that will happen, he already lost his team mates and fan base.
i predict wherever manny ends up playing tomorrow, he’ll get 3 hits.
Is anyone else having a hard time loading mlbtraderumors.com?
No Kyle Lohse pls. Remove him from under Dave Duncan’s watchful eye and watch his ERA go up by 2-3 runs. Plus, the Cardinals are in the race and just got Carpenter back. Why would they sell?
But I wonder if the Dodgers do get Maddux, any chance they might be willing to move Lowe for Attorney General, cash and maybe one other small piece?
Hey fellas. So i was doing nothing last night and thought of a nickname for Cano and Melky. Want your oppinion on this.
Cano-Bat-man(great hitter)and Melky-Rob-bin(as in robbing others from base hits)
Thoughts?
Manny has approve the deal
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1
Bye Bye Manny
olney said the marlins are trying to squeeze something more out of the deal right now and thats the hold up
Via Will Carroll from Baseball Prospectus:
If the Pirates back out of the deal because they don’t get what they want, the Dodgers and a “mystery team” are also in the mix for Manny…
Brandon, I bet you are hoping the the Yanks acquiring Keppinger and getting rid of Betemit. lol, if they really do, you would be jumping for joy.
Yes I admit it I am.
if only
MLBTradeRumors: “Will Carroll has an update. The Pirates could back out Bay talks entirely if they don’t get what they want. The Red Sox will continue shopping Manny regardless, with the Dodgers and a mystery team in the mix. The Dodgers might be willing to part with Matt Kemp.”
http://www.baseballprospectus......red/?p=972
Both servers seem to be stressed out, unsurprisingly.
Will Manny sit out and not play if he is not traded.. I rather see that then him being traded and the sox getting something in return. I hope the sox dont trade him and then Manny desides i quit and not play for the rest of the season.. now that would be awesome!!!
“Is anyone else having a hard time loading mlbtraderumors.com?”
Occasionally. But remember, this is like Christmas Day for a site like that – their traffic is sure to be through the roof. I’m sure the number of people hitting refresh over there is outrageous.
Sound like Pittsburgh is beginning to balk on this accoridng to Will Carroll at BP. Seems they aren’t happy with the prospects.
Because Wainwright will come back from the DL soon as well and they need a bat and a reliever.
The Marlins? I think you mean the Pirates…
Manny is gonna kill the NL.And if you think Manny kills the Yankees watch him against Heilman and Wagner in a big spot.
“Manny has approve the deal

He’s just indicated that he’ll waive his no-trade clause, which we all assumed he would. The teams still need to agree, and the Pirates aren’t flinching.
naw, olney said the marlins are driving a hard bargain
Oh man, the famous “mystery team”! You absolutely have to love Scott Boras, the man should trademark that phrase so no one else can steal his B.S. negotiating thunder.
I really don’t think he is going to move…This is all for nothing, as is every year about Manny.
The Pirates better make this deal….but they aren’t going to want to get robbed again like their deal last week.
olney said theres a 1% chance manny finishes the year with the red sox
The mystery team is the Expos…:)
“naw, olney said the marlins are driving a hard bargain”
Probably referring to their reluctance to deal Mike Stanton, who could seal the deal for the Pirates.
The person that said Bay is a poor mans Drew is dead on. Accept he’s fortunate in the fact that he doesnt have to go around dealing with being named Nancy.
i think the pirates are getting the best of this deal. hermida can play and bay is overrated. so thats almost a wash. add in 3 A to B level prospects and thats a great trade for them
talking about the mets needing a trade to keep up with the yankees in ny, steve phillips said “(brian cashman and) the yankees are kicking the met’s butt”
According to Jayson Stark (ESPN) the Rays are unlikely to make any trades. They don’t want Dunn because “he makes their lineup too left-handed, and they’ve been informed by Pittsburgh that Jason Bay is likely to go somewhere else.”
Manny wouldn’t block the trade..its up to the teams now and they seem to be haggling. This will go down to the wire.
The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, are “kicking around” the idea of adding Indians righty Paul Byrd, according to major-league sources.
As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the Yankees and Indians had not yet exchanged names, but a deal could come together quickly if the Yankees decided to pursue it.
The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies. For the Yankees, Byrd would be a potential upgrade over right-hander Darrell Rasner.
Phillips has trashed us so many times it’s hard to even listen to him.
“Sound like Pittsburgh is beginning to balk on this accoridng to Will Carroll at BP. Seems they aren’t happy with the prospects.”
As proposed – this is not a good deal for them.
As a yankee fan I’m mixed – I definitely want to see Manny go – but getting back Bay or Bay and Grabow would be a relative coup for the Sox.
They have no leverage here. Despite that they would be getting back an all star – an all star signed to make $7.5M next year and possibly a decent LOOGY – which they could really use.
The only way this deal gets done to such a relative advantage for the sox is if another team in the deal gets taken advantage of.
Right now that’s the Pirates.
If I were the Pirates the primary interest in getting involved with the Manny talks would be to put more pressure on Tampa. That’s the deal the Pirates should try to get done. Getting back Hellickson or Wade Davis is the kind of trade you make when getting rid of a guy like Bay.
And if Stanton is not in the deal the Pirates have no reason to make this trade. They really don’t.
I want to see Manny go. That’s what most yankee fans would like to see. But to think getting back Bay and Grabow isn’t a great deal for the sox isn’t correct. Under the circumstances that’s a great deal – one that only gets done because the pirates are being foolish.
Dis-agree maybe over Ponson.
“i think the pirates are getting the best of this deal.”
I had them pegged as the winners in the deal that was discussed last night. But that deal had them getting Stanton and Tucker from the Marlins. It now seems that the Marlins aren’t giving up either prospect.
NO BYRD, he’s a long ball threat.
Jason Bay can not do half of what Manny does for the sox, he is a .202 hitter with Runners in scoring position, guy has never played an important game in his life
It seems like nobody thinks Bay can play. People, he’s a career .281/.375/.515. Yes, Manny’s beaten us up, but it’s not like Bay is nothing. He’s a good stick and a faaaar better glove than Manny ever was. The Sox do not necessarily come out behind on this deal.
Would Paul Byrd be that much better than Rasner? He’s at a 5 era. Isnt it better to just go with Kennedy or Aceves?
mlbtraderumors.com….having severe server problems….major ones.
I can’t imagine the Dodgers would be dumb enough to trade Matt Kemp for 2 months of Manny. The Dodgers are hovering around .500, with little chance of winning a WS, nevermind making the payoffs even. Trading a 5 tool, controlled stud for 2 months of a Manny is ridiculous.
CB:
I agree that’s why I doubt he moves.
Ken Rosenthal (Fox):
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I don’t want Byrd. He isn’t any better than what we have right now or in the Minors. And why do they always write to replace Rasner? Isn’t Ponson the greater instability?
“The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, are “kicking around†the idea of adding Indians righty Paul Byrd, according to major-league sources.”
Ukh. No.
Bay is a good fielder?
gammons says that the manny deal is close to dead
12:42 p.m.
The Mariners’ agreement to send reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins may be giving the Yankees hope that perhaps Seattle will also relent and agree to trade Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees. Word is, Hernandez was on the table for weeks. Perhaps the Mariners will also relent on Washburn. The Yankees have generously offered to pick up the rest of the $14 million remaining on Washburn’s contract through 2009 while sending them a middling prospect. Seattle has been calling around to try to beat that, but the suspicion is they won’t. So maybe the Yankees will get Washburn after all.
“The Sox do not necessarily come out behind on this deal.”
Agreed, but the torment of losing because of Manny won’t happen anymore so it’s a plus for Yank fans.
I would rather take my chances with
Ortiz
Bay
than
Ortiz
Manny..
Bay is good but he isn’t Manny..offensively
Jonah Curry just said FLA and BOS could do the deal straight up but remember TB wanted Bay so why would Boston enter Pittsburgh into negotiations because they BLEEP BLOCKING the Rays
Jon….where was that from?
3 way deals are hard to complete. I think Manny stays in Boston, or he gets traded to Fla or Philly, but I say its 70-30 he stays
Gammons:
A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7M to cover Ramirez’s contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9M and two prospects for Jason Bay.
So it looks like the Marlins are being the difficult ones.
Paul Byrd?
Oh please no…
gammons says that the manny deal is close to dead…you mean gammons is close to dead
“He’s a good stick and a faaaar better glove than Manny ever was.”
Yeah. But is he a better cut off man from the monster to the infield? I dont think so.
“The person that said Bay is a poor mans Drew is dead on”
Bay’s gone 30/100 twice and is on his way to do it again this year. He definitely fell of a bit last year, but that would appear the exception rather than the rule. I think he’s probably a little better hitter than Drew.

Bphil, the Washburn piece was from Heyman on SI
“NO BYRD, he’s a long ball threat.”
Rasner has 4.92 era 1.53 WHIP, Ponson 4.59 era 1.66 WHIP. I’d take Larry Bird over them.
“Jason Bay can not do half of what Manny does for the sox,”
Bay is not nearly the hitter Manny is but he’s much better than people are giving him credit for.
The other big difference between them – Manny is 36 and Bay is 29. A 29 year old Manny and a 29 year old Bay is blow out. But age does matter some.
Here’s a very interesting comparison of what both Manny and Bay are projected to do over the rest of the year.
Manny is projected to be 26 runs better than an average LF. Bay is projected to be 24 runs better than an average LF.
Now I know people will say statistics are useless, etc., etc. – but this comparison is very interesting and shows how productive a player Bay is.
It’s not easy finding .900 OPS players and that’s what Bay is.
http://www.replacementlevel.co....._jason_bay
I don’t trust Gammons. His reports are so different than everyone else’s on this. Didn’t Olney just say it was close.
Mystery Mets? If Omar is “itching” to make a trade, maybe he’s ready to do a Kazmir like mistake and send their top prospects to Boston for Manny… I have no idea who or how good the Mets prospects are, but if they’re any good, I’d rather Omar make that mistake with a different trade partner.
The Marlins are asking for the world, they know Boston was desperate, I guess trying to find the ceiling of how desperate.
No, I don’t think Bay could ever pull off that Damon cut-off play. That was one of the most amazing plays I’ve ever seen, dumbass or no.
“It seems like nobody thinks Bay can play. People, he’s a career .281/.375/.515. Yes, Manny’s beaten us up, but it’s not like Bay is nothing. He’s a good stick and a faaaar better glove than Manny ever was. The Sox do not necessarily come out behind on this deal.”
He’s a fine player, though not much of a big-game player considering both his lack of experience and the lack of clutch hitting pointed out by Peyton. He’s good enough that the Sox would not do too poorly with this deal considering the situation.
But they’d be a -significantly- weaker team. Ortiz/Manny has been the undisputed heart of the ballclub for the last six years. Two world championships and two innings away from a possible third are squarely at the feet of that tandem. They’ve destroyed high-quality pitching, especially Manny. Manny has also made Ortiz a better hitter. He’s on another level of performance that Bay can only dream of.
11:46am: Peter Gammons says the three-way Manny deal is close to dead. It may not make sense for Boston.
Is it me or doesn’t Paul Byrd look like Andy Serkis (the guy that played Gollum)?
I wonder if the rumor about the Yankees looking at Byrd is designed to get the Mariners to bend. They seem to want to dump the salary which could be useful elsewhere.
When teams see you have other options it can lubricate the works a bit and get things done.
Gammons is the only one saying the deal is in trouble. Everyone else says its heating up
Get us a starting pitcher, Cashman!
CB:
I really didn’t want to go here, but what about the clutch hits Manny provides that is hard to replace. I understand he has been dogging it lately, but he usely get’s huge hit’s for the Sox..
Sorry “usually” noy usely..
Manny hits .400 against us and even better at Yankee Stadium. Bay will not do that.
my spelling…”not”
“Gammons is the only one saying the deal is in trouble.”
Anything Gammons reports, you have to consider that he’s a mouthpiece for the RS front office, who would like the Marlins and Pirates to believe that they’re perfectly willing to shop Manny elsewhere.
Get us a starting pitcher, Cashman!
and a better bench player than Betemit like Keppinger.
The deal dead with 3 hours to go before the deadline? Peter Gammons wouldn’t be exhibiting some wishful thinking about the Red Sox giving up a huge offensive threat, would he?
Dead will be official at 4, not at 1.
The thing to remember is that Gammons is a huge Red Sox fan. Anything he reports on the goings on with the Red Sox are biased. He looked at what happens to the line up without Manny and he is the one who is balking.
Seriously. Who can work in a time like this. I keep hitting refresh and refresh again before its even finished doing it the first time.
Cash. We need one more pitcher. You have one more heist in you. Getter done.
On Gammons, did anybody see him and Phillips talk the other night about the Manny thing, Gammons got hot…..
“Rasner has 4.92 era 1.53 WHIP, Ponson 4.59 era 1.66 WHIP. I’d take Larry Bird over them.”
I’d take Senator Robert Byrd over them!
“Anything Gammons reports, you have to consider that he’s a mouthpiece for the RS front office, who would like the Marlins and Pirates to believe that they’re perfectly willing to shop Manny elsewhere.”
Idiot. Gammons is not paid by the Sox. Doesn’t work for the Sox. Why make up stuff?
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that talks regarding a Manny Ramirez trade are “taking off.”
Rosenthal quotes an executive who has been in contact with the clubs involved as saying that the Pirates are close to getting what they look for, which appears to be the final hurdle to cross, as Manny has already approved a trade to Florida. Rosenthal quotes another exec who cautions that the talks are still in a “tenuous state.”
What was Gammons hot about?
If Manny isnt traded. Who here thinks he will do his usual August hamstring pull act?
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8398506
Pirates are now warming to the deal, according to Rosenthal.
gammons is to the red soxs like foxnews is to the bush white house. He is told what he needs to say. Wherever the deal is, the red soxs want people to know that its dead. Take that for what is worth. It doesnt mean the deal is dead or heating up, it just means that the red soxs want that information out there…
Come on Cash he dives, he fields, he throws, he hits w/ RISP
Mr. Utility upgrade
Byrd is better than Rasner & Ponson, but not by all that much. 20 starts @ under 6 IP per. An ERA close to 5, a BAA of .291, and 23 HR’s in 115 IP.
I’d rather have Washburn by a mile.
MLB Deadline special on ESPNews.
“I’d take Senator Robert Byrd over them!”
You would want a Ku Klux Klan member on your team?
CB – I agree with you, for the most part. I don’t think the Red Sox are merely bystanders at this point (as PittsburghYankeeFan suggested earlier), though, since some of the reports suggested the Red Sox were kicking in a prospect to the Pirates as well, and I think that can potentially change the entire flavor of the deal.
The Red Sox certainly have pitching talent that the Pirates would be interested in, thinking specifically of Bowden. I think the Red Sox would understandably balk at kicking in a prospect because they are subsidizing the Marlins, but it seems like they might do that *anyway* even if they don’t get Bay (the three-way falls apart), as Will Carrol suggests.
I think I’d rather the Red Sox get Bay for Manny and cash, though, than get Kemp for Manny and cash (another potential outcome, if LA becomes the third wheel to replace the Pirates). On the other hand, if that happens, there’s probably a 50-50 shot Bay still goes to the Rays, which would be a huge pick-up for them.
This is a really, really interesting dance that has serious implications for the AL East, not just this year, but through the end of the decade. If the Rays add Bay, you have to seriously consider that this three-team race will go down to the wire, and they probably look like the favorites next season as their young talent gets a year older and matures. If the Sox add Bay, it’s still a three-team race, but I think the Rays would have the best shot at faltering down the stretch, since they’ll be forced to rely on Baldelli for that last, big bat they need right now.
Of course, the Red Sox can still end up with Bay and the Rays could look at adding Dunn, which would be a strong and underrated pick-up, in my opinion.
I’m just glad that Cashman has already taken care of business without mortgaging the future. As it stands right now, the Rays are likely going to have to give up some young chips with value to improve their team this year, and that only helps the Yankees moving forward. I’d love for the Red Sox to have to surrender young talent for their LF for the rest of the decade, whether that be Bay or Kemp, but I’m very pessimistic that happens.
timothy – i saw that on espn. gammons got super mad super fast. it was awesome!
Gammons is starting to act like a cry baby instead of an insider. How is it that he is the only who calls the deal dead yet 6 other sources say it’s getting hot including one from his ESPN branch.
Toronto in the running for Bay?
gammons could be playing mouthpiece for either side here, i need to hear from others before i believe him.
“Idiot. Gammons is not paid by the Sox. Doesn’t work for the Sox. Why make up stuff?”
Oh, yes. Of course. Media figures never report what teams want them to report. How could I be so stupid? Thank you for correcting me, brilliant one.
gammons is like a goofy team mascot, minus a costume
Jon:
Phillips said the FO should make up with Manny they need each other, I thought Gammons would blow a gasket defending the Bo Sox FO, he was all for getting rid of Manny…. It was on ESPN Baseball tonight.
Come on Cash he dives, he fields, he throws, he hits w/ RISP
I’m sure Cashman took notes when the Yanks were playing against the Reds last month. I wonder if we could forward this idea to Pete, so he could pass it on to Cash.
jon – he thought that steve “kazmir for zambrano” phillips was implying that it was francona’s fault, and red sox management, that manny was acting up, and that phillips was saying that francona should have managed him better. phillips seemed to backtrack, but he never really did.
anyone know if there is an espn news channel through cablevision in westchester?
“I really didn’t want to go here, but what about the clutch hits Manny provides that is hard to replace.”
I think many yankee fans are confusing two separate issues.
Issue 1. Manny leaving the sox.
That in and of itself is a devastating loss – he is irreplaceable.
Issue 2. Is trading Manny under these awful circumstances for the sox for Bay and Grabow a good deal?
Yes – that’s a very good deal – given the circumstances.
Sure I want to see Manny go. My preference is that he goes in a way in which the Red Sox are the ones who come out on the short end of the stick – not the pirates or the Marlins.
To get Bay and Grabow or even Bay alone for Manny given the circumstances would be Theo making close to the best out of an awful situation for his club.
I’d much prefer Theo be forced to take a bad situation and be forced to make a bad deal.
You can see know that’s what the Marlins (a shrewd club) are trying to do in asking for more money and talent. The Marlins – unlike the Pirates – see that Boston has no leverage and are in a precarious situation. When you try to make trades from a position of weakness – you get hurt, often very badly. The marlins see that and are trying to use Boston’s lack of leverage against them.
Boston is turn is trying to make up for their lack of leverage by taking advantage of a third team – the pirates.
If this were to become reduced to a two team trade – the Sox and the Marlins – the Sox would have to make a very bad trade.
Keeping Manny this time is an enormous risk for them. He could completely implode their entire year.
That’s the risk assessement they have to make.
As a yankee fan I hope they make the wrong decision – but they’re a very well run club and don’t make many bad calls.
I don’t think the deal gets done in the end. I thin boston will do what they always do – live with the risk. But we’ll see.
Thats interesting that Gammons would blow up and want to trade Manny the other night, but then be squashing all the trade talk today
I would take byrd over rasner and ponson, he has looked great his last 2 outings
From ESPN’s Trade deadline special (12:39 p.m.): Buster Olney says of Ramirez, “If he’s not traded by 4 p.m. today, there’s a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly.”
his face was getting all twitchy…
one other thing that was interesting about gammons – earlier in the year (it was this year, right?), gammons was mad about farnsworth throwing at someone (my recollection of this story is clearly poor), and he called him a AAA pitcher on baseball tonight.
i found that funny, because gammons praised farnsworth as a “very good pitcher” when the pudge-farns swap was announced.
This MLB deadline special is cracking me up. They were just analyzing Griffey’s swing and ESPN instead ran Manny Ramirez highlights in place.
“I think the Red Sox would understandably balk at kicking in a prospect because they are subsidizing the Marlins, but it seems like they might do that *anyway* even if they don’t get Bay (the three-way falls apart), as Will Carrol suggests.”
The framework handed to Selig’s office has Boston sending a prospect to each team. Lowrie and Hunter Jones (lefty relief prospect close to callup) have both been mentioned for the Pirates.
As for those who say Bay has no big-game experience, I already attempted to debunk how much that claim matters in a previous thread. Ortiz had no big-game experience (at least, he hadn’t performed at a high-level in big-game situations) before he was signed by the Red Sox, and even that didn’t really materialize until 2004 (granted, he had a .900 OPS ALCS in 2003, but his ADLS line that year was miserable, as were his lines in the 2002 postseason with Minnesota).
Bay is a very, very good player, and the Red Sox will have done well for themselves if they add him just for Manny and cash. He’s a low-cost replacement for Manny next year, and the Red Sox could potentially sign him to a below-market extension after that to keep him through 2013 or so. On the other hand, if the Red Sox don’t deal Manny and let him walk away at the end of the season, they’ll have to surrender their own prospects to get that kind of bat (whether it be Bay, Holliday, or someone else) over the offseason.
Right now, it looks like they’ll be able to buy Bay with Florida’s prospects, and if the Red Sox can do that, it’s a coup. Sure, paying the rest of Manny’s salary hurts, but Boston has money, and they can afford to eat salary.
I really hope one of Boston’s A prospects gets included in this deal. I’d prefer Bowden, but would settle if someone like Lars Anderson gets included in this deal. It seems really unlikely, though.

I thought Gammons was literally going to cry after the incident above. its the exact moment i lost all respect for him
Brandon- Thats ESPN for ya
frits,
Im not sure Phillips pulled the Kazmir for Zambrano trade.
Isn’t Gammons “president” of the Red Sox 3rd World nation?
Buster Olney sayed that the 3-way trade is all but dead
WHAT ABOUT IGAWA? WERE NOT THE MARLINS INTERESTED IN HIM? HE NEEDS TO GO NEXT! TIME TO END THE IGAWA EXPERIMENT.
we could do a lot worse than Paul Byrd, i think. and i think he does pitch well in colder weather.
i mean it is dead
doris – i agree (although my respect for him was pretty small anyway). it was pretty unprofessional to degrade a player like that. plus, as we learned yesterday, farnsworth is a sensitive guy!
Gammons is on tv now, Marlins are asking for more money and a couple prospects. All Boston would get is Bay
Who will retire from their profession first. Paterno or Gammons? I wish it would come sooner rather than later.
Benigno, you colossal moron.
“He’s on another level of performance that Bay can only dream of.”
No, he’s not. He used to be, but he isn’t anymore. Right now he’s a little (not a lot) better than Bay with the bat. Manny is among the worst outfielders in the majors. Bay is not. Manny is among the worst baserunners in the majors. Bay is not. Manny decides not to play sometimes. Bay does not. It’s not inconceivable – hell, it may even be likely – that the Sox come out ahead.
“If he’s not traded by 4 p.m. today, there’s a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly.â€
How can both of these be true??? If he’s not traded by 4, I’d say there is a 100% chance he finishes the year with the Red Sox.
Hear, hear! re: big-game ability. If a guy hasn’t been in any big games, you can’t say he sucks in big games.
lol olney really wants manny to be traded
Fredo, cause they can still trade him after the deadline.
one more arm! please
Confucius – outside of Lowrie, I hadn’t really been hearing names. As I mentioned before, the more blue chip talent the Red Sox surrender in any deal, the better. It’s really, really easy to understate how good Bay can be for Boston for the next two years (miniumum) at a bargain price if healthy, and if all you need to surrender is a player you’d jettison at the end of the year for nothing *anyway*, it’s the kind of deal you make, almost without thinking.
A motivated Manny is still probably better than Bay for the remainder of the season, but it doesn’t seem the Red Sox will have that luxury, and I’d bet money on Bay outperforming Manny at a better price for the next year or two. Remember, he’s only 29, and still has a good few years of his prime left.
Gammons = False rumors (Again don’t go by him)
“How can both of these be true??? If he’s not traded by 4, I’d say there is a 100% chance he finishes the year with the Red Sox.”
manny would pass thru waivers, and could be traded in August, just like how the yankees could still acquire Washburn after today.
i cant believe Minaya is still on the sidelines and not in the middle of the Manny negotiations. to me, Manny to the Mets is a no-brainer… puts them over the top in the NL East.
“and he called him a AAA pitcher on baseball tonight. ”
he may not have lived up to his salary, but to say AAA is pretty absurd…
“No, he’s not. It’s not inconceivable – hell, it may even be likely – that the Sox come out ahead.”
Just like I’ve argued that Farnsworth frightened me every time he took the mound in a big spot, despite his numbers, Jason Bay would not frighten me in a big spot for the Red Sox. You pay too much attention to Manny’s ‘declining numbers.’ It was just three months ago that the guy was absolutely murdering Mussina and the rest of our staff. We could not get him out.
Scott:
That very well could be true, but you have to admit The Ortiz Manny duo.. Is probably the best 1, 2 punch in the game right now.
Fright and fear do not win games.
It sounds like every person trying to get information about this deal is getting told 50,000 different things by their sources. I will keep hitting refresh, though, since you guys are doing such a good job keeping up with everything.
Frits….I hate Steve Phillips as much as anyone but get the facts straight please, he didn’t deal Kazmir for Zambrano, that was Duquette.
“Fredo, cause they can still trade him after the deadline.”
Phil, there is a ZERO percent chance he’d clear waivers.
So funny how they are all deferring to Gammons – you get the feeling that they don’t agree, but they keeps saying “If Peter says so…”
Gammons probably wants to quash the deal.
If ESPN reports this is “all but done”, you stop watching. If it’s “50/50″, you stay tuned in. No surprise they’re going with the latter message with 3 more hours until the deadline.
“manny would pass thru waivers, and could be traded in August, just like how the yankees could still acquire Washburn after today.”
A team would claim him, probably the Mets. His contract is a lot more favorable this time.
ESPN is ridiculous, in the middle of their MLB Trade Deadline special they cut away to report on Brett Favre, for the 7000th time today. Get off of my televison
Fredo, so if someone claims him, they still end up making a deal.
“Fredo, cause they can still trade him after the deadline.”
Right now the Yankees have a worse record than Boston. There is a zero percent chance that the Yankees wouldn’t put in a waiver claim for him if the opportunity were to arise.
“I think I’d rather the Red Sox get Bay for Manny and cash, though, than get Kemp for Manny and cash (another potential outcome, if LA becomes the third wheel to replace the Pirates).”
Phoenix,
I agree with you – getting Kemp in any way back for Manny would be highway robbery and close to the worst case scenario for the yankees.
That said i don’t believe that rumor one iota. Frank McCourt is not that kind of owner.
He already killed the Dodgers attempt to get CC because he’s concerned about the dodgers reveues. No way – no way he’s going to want to add Manny’s salary and I can’t see the Sox paying the dodgers to trade Manny.
The other thing – the dodgers front office is way too dysfunctional to pull off a deal this complicated this quickly. The schism between the Ned Colletti faction and the Logan White faction is way too deep to pull of this kind of deal.
So I don’t buy the the dodgers angle.
If the Sox had to add Bowden to the deal that would change a lot. Then the deal is very different for them – they don’t have that much pitching in their system behind Bowden.
I don’t see them including Bowden. They’ll walk away.
Dunn to Tampa makes sense – but the huge issue for them is that they are already way too left handed. They really would have an imbalanced line up with Dunn.
Bay makes much more sense for Tampa. They might be reticent to do it but they could play upton in right and Crawford in center.
Timothy:
Maybe. Take a look at the White Sox. They’ve got 3.
Scott:
They have the past couple of years..
“Hear, hear! re: big-game ability. If a guy hasn’t been in any big games, you can’t say he sucks in big games.”
He’s hitting just over .200 with RISP this year. Manny is hitting just over .300.
Scott:
The White sock 3, are not Ortiz and Manny.. IMO
http://theblogofchampions.com/?p=162
(this site is of a good friend of mine, so please support it! I think it’s pretty good.
Dude, quit that advertising. It was annoying yesterday, it’s annoying now.
“Fredo, so if someone claims him, they still end up making a deal.”
No, Phil, they don’t. Despite their miserable play of the last 2 weeks, they remain very much in the race. They will not give him away w/o getting some value back. Otherwise, he’d be gone already.
“Fright and fear do not win games.”
Really? Couldn’t Mussina being a little more frightened of Manny have resulted in one extra win for us?
Splitting with LAA at a minimum this weekend needs to happen.
How that effects the standings of course is important. Angels, by getting Teixiera, have (IMO) made themselves favorites for the pennant. Getting Pudge, on the other hand, will help us deal with their pitching should we face them in Oct.
Let’s say we split the 4-gamer this weekend. Going into the playoffs we’ll know that they didn’t face Joba this time and that could be a decider in Oct.
Overtaking both Tampa and Boston becomes more important now. The Angels would be a favorite over the wild card anyways, plus they’d have home field advantage to boot. If we settle for the wild card, that’s what we’d face in the ALDS. This weekend’s series is all in our house, so it might be a little deceiving in terms of where we stand looking towards an ALDS with them. Joba could be a decider, especially if he could pitch 2 games, but 3 of the 5 potential games would be in LA.
We would need Joba, Pettitte & Moose to step up like they’re all capable of. Pettitte has often stepped a big game pitcher when the game is big. Moose has shown flashes of doing it again, but for a max of 6 innings at a shot. Joba showed us recently against Beckett at Fenway that he has a pair the size of coconuts.
Do they even use a 4th starting pitcher in a post-season series? In a best-of-five series I don’t feel so good about starting Posnon, Rasner or Washburn with the Angels leading a best-of-five series 2-1. That’s when you have to put Pettitte or Joba in. The post season can be won with 3 good starters. If there’s a 4th starter who’s only so-so the first 3 just have to step up.
If its a 4-man post-season rotation I’d feel better with Wang, Hughes or Kennedy than Ponson, Rasner or Washburn. If any of them were in the mix at that point it would be because they’d have already shown by then that they can perform as was expected of them out of spring training.
Better shot at beating the Angels in a 7-game ALCS if we don’t have that 4th starter. Right now we don’t have it, and I don’t think Washburn’s the answer. He may be better tha Ponson and Rasner but that’s not necessarily saying he’s the answer. A best of 7 leaves more room for error if we don’t have the 4th starter we need.
I’d like to see Wang back if he can get better and build up his arm strength & stamina again soon enough for October. If not either Kennedy or Hughes would need to come back by then. Again, if any of the 3 were there by then, it only would be because they’d been able to shown they’re worthy by late Sept.
How would Manny react if this deal falls apart?
Will he continue to dog it and be a distraction? or will he accept it and keep quiet and play hard if they tell him they will decline his option at the end of the year?
From Rotoworld:
“According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to the prospects they’d receive in a Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida deal.
That was supposed to be the biggest remaining hurdle. If this is correct, then talks are anything but dead. ”
With Jason Bay the Sox might be making a good deal but we have to remember how much Manny has owned the Yankees over the years. Any deal that gets Manny out of the AL east is a good one as far as I’m concerned.
“No, Phil, they don’t.”
well, they could, depending on what team is awarded the claim.
Steve Phillips did not do the Kazmir trade, that was Joe McIlvaine. However, due to his being the worst baseball analyst on tv, most people have no problem giving him credit for this trade. I personally credit him for telling David Caruso to leave NYPD Blue as well.
One other thing on the rumors of Manny going to the dodgers.
The dodgers have already gotten burned on the Jones deal – he’s been awful for them.
I can’t see them wanting to acquire another older, high priced outfielder.
Manny’s only a rental to them – they won’t shell out the money to pay him long term.
They’ve been way to protective of their younger players to get rid of Kemp for a rental.
wow, Steve Phillips just complimented the Yanks.
From Ken Rosenthall:
The Manny Ramirez trade appears to be moving closer to completion.
“It sounds like things are taking off and Pittsburgh is getting what they are looking for,” said an executive who has been in contact with the clubs involved.
Another source familiar with the discussions, however, continued to express caution, indicating that the talks remain in a tenuous state.
Manny is most likely gone — up here in MA everyone seems to want him gone. Everyone is sick of this and the schilling thing this morning bascially said that the players don’t want a guy that will quit on them!
Sounds like we’re battling the Red Sox for Scott Eyre:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....e_deadline
From Jim Callis
Jim Callis: (1:14 PM ET ) There’s a lot of speculation that after the M’s traded Rhodes for something that had been on the table for weeks, they’ll eventually deal Washburn to the Yankees after they can’t find a better offer.
“well, they could, depending on what team is awarded the claim.”
Sorry but there’s no way he gets traded if it doesn’t go down by 4PM today. The deal is too complicated and too many players would have to clear waivers in order for the deal to work. Somebody would put in a claim for Manny or Jason Bay or both of them. It’s just too complicated for it to work in my opinion.
“well, they could, depending on what team is awarded the claim.”
Turn Two, this would also assume that what that Boston views as enough value can also slip thru waivers. Simply no way that’s going to happen.
jimmy d – i know phillips didn’t…but he’s such an idiot, i like to think he did.
I would go after Will Ohman, lefties are 5 for 75.
I can’t wait for the deadline to pass so I don’t have to hear Brandon promote Jeff Keppinger anymore.
ray, agreed. incredibly complicated. just saying its not impossible.
i still think the M’s will give in for Washburn, too, IMO.
m4rk6-
Sorry man. Just trying to get some traffic. Won’t do it anymore. Go Yanks!
wow, Steve Phillips just complimented the Yanks.
He threw up in his mouth when he said that.
Via Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports:
Sorry but there’s no way he gets traded if it doesn’t go down by 4PM today. The deal is too complicated and too many players would have to clear waivers in order for the deal to work. Somebody would put in a claim for Manny or Jason Bay or both of them. It’s just too complicated for it to work in my opinion.
Right, you are. That would be a frenzy. Numerous teams would put in for Bay.
steve phillips: “you have to give the yankees credit”
“…in the end, their will be signs and wonders” Luke 21:11
Yanks are just driving up the price on Eyre – we really don’t need him or his 4.91 ERA stinking up our already excellent bullpen.
I’d go after ohman too. did any of you guys see his harry caray impression? hilarious.
He threw up in his mouth when he said that.
lol, true that…
I don’t understand why everyone is so averse to Paul Byrd. He’s only a VERY slightly worse pitcher than Washburn, but he’s still much better than Ponson. He falls into the same “crafty veteran with playoff experience” category, he’s only signed through this year, and the Indians would likely be reasonable in reaching a deal.
What I would do if I were Cash is come to a casual consensus with Cleveland on the return, then call Seattle and tell them this is their last chance to accept his offer or he will go forward with Cleveland. See if Seattle still wants the world in return when it’s do or die time. The Rockies basically laughed in their face earlier after hearing what they wanted for Wash. At this point they have to be starting to realize they’re not gonna do any better than what we’re offering.
Bobby, just put the website where Pete allows website infor to go under your e-mail address. Your name will be highlighted and people will probably click on your name out of curiosity. Do that on dozens of sports blogs and make comments and you could get yourself a lot of traffic.
“just saying its not impossible.”
Would you say it’s 99% possible like Buster Olney??? (:
Would love to hear Beningno and Roberts giggle if Pavano actually ends up on their team.
I hate Paul Byrd. He does that stupid double-windup, do you know what I’m talking about? I’m sorry but I just can’t support the Yankees getting him.
While the sox are at it. Can they ship out Manny’s brother Big Pudgy as well? That would make all the Yankee pitchers sleep well the night before the game.
Ouch:
Blame game over Manny
Posted by Jayson Stark
Yet another official with one of these three teams says the Manny-Bay deal is dead. In the aftermath, the teams involved seem unsure of what happened. The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren’t too happy with either of them.
Thanks Raymagnetic!
Any updates on Freddie Garcia?
George Kontos has pitched 6 innings of 1 hit, 1BB, 0RUN, 9K ball so far today.
Colletti has a reputation for being very stingy with prospects and McCourt hates spending money. Now they are going to trade a promising young stud like Kemp for 2 months of Manny?
It’s not like they are a win-now team, their entirecore (Kemp/Ethier/Looney/Martin/Billingsly/Broxton/Krudoa/Kershaw etc.) is comprised of young players, so it makes no sense from that standpoint.
Manny will get the Bonds treatment in LA anyway, nobody will ever pitch to him with with the likes of Martin/Kent/Looney behind him. Those are nice players, but not in the same stratosphere as Manny.
Then again, the Marlins were the last team I would have expected to get involved in this, so anything is possible. Just doesn’t make much sense though from LA’s standpoint.
Now Stark is saying the deal is dead
Really won’t be surprised if Rasner/Ponson is replaced first by Kennedy. I know he was terrible in April, but I’d still rather see him get another shot than see Washburn or Byrd.
Why are the Yanks in a battle for Scott Eyre? What was Marte acquired for if were still looking for a lefty.
You’d think we’d learn by now that the Sox will never trade Manny. How many times has he been on the verge of being traded? It seems like every year he wants out and they “try” to trade him. Just goes to show, team chemistry is overrated.
Best of luck to Jeff Karstens as he gets his first start of the season against the Cubs.
Brandon wheres all your “inside” information today??? Wheres Manny going???
how bout manny for hermida, rhodes, and a prospect
I cant see Ponson against Ervin Santana on Friday, it simply cannot happen I want IPK up here if he gets lit up at least he is our guy.
Patrick good point. When its all said and done. With all the feathers Manny has ruffled. They will probably just get draft picks for him.
Yanks, Red Sox eyeing Eyre
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....e_deadline
Either way it’s a win-win for Yankee fans. If the man-child is traded to the NL, we don’t have to deal with him. If he stays, he’ll be a distraction to the team, even if it’s short-lived.
CB – It wouldn’t be Manny to the Dodgers, I don’t think. I think the Dodgers would replace the Pirates in the three-way, so the Marlins would still be getting Manny, and Hermida would probably be going to the Dodgers in exchange for Kemp+prospects.
I also agree that it’s a long-shot, but that’s what I interpreted Carrol’s earlier unfiltered blog post to be hinting at. It seems the Red Sox and Marlins don’t *need* the Pirates to get a deal done, while it looks like the Pirates are trying to leverage what they’re getting in the three-way vs. what they’d be getting from Tampa.
Tampa would supply the pitching the Pirates would want. The Red Sox and Marlins are apparently tipping the deal towards them in sheer volume of talent, regardless of position.
That the Red Sox have to deal with outmaneuvering Tampa Bay in addition to dumping Manny gives me confidence that additional pieces aside from Lowrie will be involved (and that’s huge, he’s their only in-house replacement for Lugo/Cora right now), which would make me feel better about a deal. And I think this three-way falling apart in favor of a Dodgers-Red Sox-Marlins three-way scares the crap out of me most long-term, since I’d (personally) take four or five years of Kemp over two guaranteed years plus additional near-market-price years of Bay.
Not to say that will happen; it seems if this deal is going to get done, it’ll get done in the configuration we’ve been reading about the last two days. It’s still scary to think about, though.
According to the Pittsburgh gazzette deal is done the hold up is the cash.
im sure bible-boy pettite would love it if the byrd trade went through
Oops – just saw Confucius already posted Eyre blurb…
Although I’ve never seen Manny act out as bad as he has this year. There has to be a line somewhere.
Hey Brandon, since Richar was sent to the Reds, do you think Keppinger could be on the move?
can the yanks make up the cash difference to the pirates? is that legal?
Brandon – how would manny react if the trade falls apart and he has to stay?
Top 5 Peter Gammon’s statement in last 3 years…
5. Craig Hanson is AL east best set up man.
4. Bobby Crosby will be MVP
3. Kyle Farnsworth AAA pitcher (after throwing at Sox)
2. Dustin Pedroia and Jon Lester are more valuable then AROD (after WS opt out)
1. Red Sox would rather Mike Lowell (instead of AROD).
They’re saying that the Manny deal is pretty much dead on ESPN. But, if he does go to the Marlins, we don’t have to face him, and he gets to torture the Mets! Win-win!
Brandon wheres all your “inside†information today??? Wheres Manny going???
My informer can only go as far as Manny wanting to leave and where he wanted to go. I can’t get into team negotiations.
Well, there’s still a chance that the Red Sox and Marlins could work it out directly, or that a different third team could get involved. The Sox would probably have to settle for less now. Hermida and possibly Tucker? Depends on how clear Manny is making it that he wants out. They’d want Stanton from the Marlins, but they might not have a choice.
Stark on the radio now saying Bay is not going to the Red Sox, theyre now shopping him elsewhere
It would make me very happy to see Manny get out of the East, not only that Ortiz will also have no protection which would make it even better. Manny is a faar better hitter than Bay, IMO…
WRONG Manny is not going anywhere, he will be a RedSox. owell
How could the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette say the deal is done and ESPN say it’s dead?
“can the yanks make up the cash difference to the pirates? is that legal?”
Hell. We’ll do that Obama thing and all Yankee fans throw in 20 bucks to seal the deal.
Brandon – how would manny react if the trade falls apart and he has to stay?
Lets just say they’ll wish they traded him.
Hey Brandon, since Richar was sent to the Reds, do you think Keppinger could be on the move?
I know I wish Cash would attempt to acquire him atleast, I mean shop Betemit while you can.
“My informer can only go as far as Manny wanting to leave and where he wanted to go.”
Your informer is telling you things that are being reported everywhere. Seriously, cut him loose. He’s playing you.
Kontos is really dealing today. Glad the kid is still in the org.
“My informer can only go as far as Manny wanting to leave and where he wanted to go. I can’t get into team negotiations.”
TRY HARDER BRANDON!!!
His informer is just the same as mine. ESPN,ROTOWorld,MLB trade rumors and the papers.. thats it.
“Stark on the radio now saying Bay is not going to the Red Sox, theyre now shopping him elsewhere”
Would they take Abreu and cash?
Yanks trade broadcasters Michael Kay and Suzyn Waldman across town to the Mets for broadcaster Gary Cohen and Mr. Met. Following this trade Gary Cohen was seen crying in the arms of fellow broadcaster Keith Hernandez, he was shouting “Its not fair, its just not fair!”.
I know I wish Cash would attempt to acquire him atleast, I mean shop Betemit while you can
since Betemit is on the block, Cashman will find a way to get rid of him. if he gotten rid of Chacon with no value 2 seasons ago, he will be able to do the same with Betemit. I have faith in him.
If Matt Kemp gets traded to Boston, I will cry. Not only is he a fantastic talent and would he kill the Yankees, but I really like the dude’s game and I don’t want him to go to a team where I would have to root against him! Just say no Coletti!
If Jason Bay is the one who goes there, I’ll laugh. He’s one of the most overrated players in baseball, IMO. I would be very, very hard pressed to name 5 players more overrated than him. His defense sucks and he is poor with RISP. He has nice pop but that is the only thing he really has going for him.
ESPN.com saying Manny deal is “all but dead.”
Sad day for Yanks if ManRam isn’t gone.
“According to the Pittsburgh gazzette deal is done the hold up is the cash.”
Yeah and Ken Rosenthal/Buster Olney think Manny is gone yet now we have Jason Stark and Peter Gammons saying the deal is dead. I wish these so-called “insiders” were held accountable to the nonsense they report. Someone is wrong, but by tomorrow we’ll forget who and accept whatever they report on next.
“Your informer is telling you things that are being reported everywhere. Seriously, cut him loose. He’s playing you.”
I’m pretty sure Brandon knew that Manny waived his NTC before anyone was reporting it.
“Would they take Abreu and cash?”
Abreu’s going to be a free agent and they’re not in contention. They have no use for him. They’d want Kennedy and A-Jax to start.
The only person in baseball I’d trust to build me a boat is Cashman. Not a single leak.
The marlins O would be tremendous w Manny.
Cashman has had good luck dealing with the Pirates. He needs to get them on the phone and see if he can help them get this Manny/Pirates/Marlins deal done.
I wouldn’t trade Abreu at this point he is doing so well. If you disagree see yesterdays game.
Actually no he didnt It was all over MLBtradrumors.com before mr.baseball put it on the blog.
“ESPN.com saying Manny deal is “all but dead.—
part of me thinks they are proclaiming the talks dead just so they can have some sort of dramatic announcement about how the deal lives on, and was finished crossing the official deadline. how the saux fought thru the odds, and the teams got together and worked it all out in the trenches, blah, blah, blah… really work the story.
From Boston.com (feel sick just going there)
From Jayson Stark on ESPN’s MLB blog (1:45 p.m.): Yet another official with one of these three teams says the Manny-Bay deal is dead. In the aftermath, the teams involved seem unsure of what happened. The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren’t too happy with either of them.
Kontos – 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K
So glad we didn’t trade him, this guy has an electric arm. Could be Joba-like if he was moved to the pen full-time.
“According to the Pittsburgh gazzette deal is done the hold up is the cash.â€
The Gazzette is now reporting much pessimism. Marlins wanted more cash. Boston isn’t parting with it.
Looks like that may be lights out.
stop posting the same information, only news
“Abreu’s going to be a free agent and they’re not in contention. They have no use for him. They’d want Kennedy and A-Jax to start.”
Salary dump Confucius. Salary dump. They want to be under 10 million by next year.
Tank
Where are you watching this game?
Your informer is telling you things that are being reported everywhere. Seriously, cut him loose. He’s playing you.
Not really, he released info of Manny not liking Boston or the FO (true), wanting out (true).. the one thing that hasn’t been spoken is that Manny wants to go to Philly.
(But IDK unless something happens right now I’m in the dark on any other teams) He can only tell me a player’s wishes and comments not the FO wishes or negotiations.
Yanks got Xavier Nady
S.O.S,
Salary dump? They wouldn’t take Abreu just because of his expiring contract. That only happens in the NBA. Bay isn’t a free agent this year, he is fairly young….. the price for him would be very high.
Brandon just texted me that Chan Ho Park just got traded to NY for a minor leaguer. He said it, its gotta be true..
thanks for the info commish of lohud..
All Hall Brandon!
So the Marlins stopped the deal over 2 million dollars ? WTF Manny not gonna like this.
Pat Gillick needs to get moving otherwise i see a sequel of the past 4 years in the Manny saga all talk no action
“Salary dump Confucius. Salary dump. They want to be under 10 million by next year.”
You don’t dump a 29 year old all-star’s salary. You move him for something that can help your team’s future. They could get more than two months of Abreu which, again, does absolutely nothing for the team.
He has been spoken of that Manny wants to go to PHILY cause of his relationship with Manuel, he and Manuel have a real good relationship.
in the meantime, wheres our starting pitcher cash? i want a blockbuster
I’d personally entertain a Manny for Damon swap if Boston would bite.
I think Gammons is trying to keep Manny in Boston by reporting that the deal is “dead”. At NESPN the only guy I really trust is Olney when he says its dead I’ll believe it.
i think cash should offer abreu for hermida
“im sure bible-boy pettite would love it if the byrd trade went through”
??
“Not really, he released info of Manny not liking Boston or the FO (true), wanting out (true)”
This was being reported in spring training. Manny himself was going on and on about how he wanted a new contract at the end of the year.
I’m disappointed.
Red Sox will now have renewed life.
ESPN also reported that Torre had re-signed with the Yankees, only to have to eat their words soon thereafter.
It does sound like the 3-way deal is dead, but ESPN is the last place I’d go to get the accurate and up-to-date word anymore. LOL
“So the Marlins stopped the deal over 2 million dollars ? WTF Manny not gonna like this.”
He should just write out a check for 2 mil and write it off.
“Salary dump Confucius. Salary dump. They want to be under 10 million by next year.”
no chance. Abreu to the Dbacks, perhaps… even to the Mets, Marlins, Dodgers… Cardinals, maybe? Lohshe for Abreu swap? something like that.
Abreu only makes sense to a team in the pennant race who is a RF away from pulling away from teh pack.
I’ll only believe the Manny deal is done when Olney reports it.
Kontos:
8 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 13 K today
YF4E – just following it on milb.com, im not watching it. I did watch him on CN8 a few weeks ago and had wicked stuff that night too… i think 8 Ks in 5 that night.
The Yanks are calling up Chris Britton to replace Kyle Farnsworth in the pen.
All this talk of the Marlins and Rays getting a big player sis BS in the end.All these rumors of these small market teams and they can’t hang.
y does everyone want Abreu gone now?? ure all so stupid.
“Tank
Where are you watching this game?”
minorleaguebaseball.com has the stats
chris britton wont see pinstripes all year , maybe a sept call up.. but he sucks
So Phillips was right on – Red Sox will now likely embrace Manny, pump him up for the final 2 months, and the clubhouse will be back to normal – Manny Being Manny.
Gammons will have a tough time now covering Manny with any objectivity.
I really want Manny to go. Please don’t let it be dead.
Although seeing Gammons get all red faced and huffy over Manny staying is almost worth it.
T minus two hours. It’ll be interesting to see how many (if any) panic moves are made in the last minutes of the trade deadline.
Vinny- Bryd is known to be a huge bible-beater
I like Hermida but he K’s too much.
chris britton actually unlike Bruney,Veras, and Ramirez has played a full year in relief and played good.
He just doesn’t get.
Vinny- Bryd is known to be a huge bible-beater
and?
“Gammons will have a tough time now covering Manny with any objectivity.”
Never been a problem for him.
As you said, the spin will be put on this now. ‘This is really the best thing for the Red Sox. Look at his career numbers against the Yankees!’
Manny stays oh well.
Guys this is a lose lose situation for the red sox! if manny stays, there club house will be in turmoil and he wont play hard for them. And if he goes Big Papy could leave his bat in the clubhouse , they will walk him every time!
Brandon,
To put it in perspective, The marlins payroll is $22 million.
AND pettite is a bible-beater as well. what arent you understanding?
“kontos:8 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 13 K today”
maybe won’t miss McCutchen.
crazy
Britton called up for the Farnsworth vacancy until Bruney is ready……..
I actually think Britton is perfect— his role here will be what Hawkins was, the guy to eat up a couple of innings in blowouts and the guy to pitch games where we are trailing. Except Britton has proven to be much better than Hawkins. He throws strikes, so he is better than Bruney in this regard too.
kontos has been pretty hot and cold all year. he’s got decent stuff, but dont see him as much much that a fringy back of the rotation guy, maybe long man in the BP… very similar projection to what McCutcheon could give.
I’m going to guess that *if* the Manny/Bay/Hermida trade fell apart, it had to do with Pittsburgh wanting additional prospects (likely from Boston), Boston agreeing in exchange for less salary relief to the Marlins, and the Marlins walking away over the money.
It fits the narrative; in that case, the Pirates would have been happy with their haul (Marlins+Red Sox prospects), but would blame the Marlins for the deal falling apart because they wouldn’t take on the addtional cash. The Marlins, on the other hand, would blame the Pirates for altering the deal for additional prospects, and therefore causing them to get less cash from Boston with Manny.
Either that, or the Pirates wanted one of Florida’s untoucheables, or no-deal. I think that also fits the narrative, although it doesn’t really speak to the reports that the Pirates had liked their haul.
why not trade abreu for either or hermida
Dr.J
Britton has no proved to be better then Hawkins, Hawkins is a vet whose played for years.. Britton hasn’t been up longer then a month. He actually throws BP for the Yanks now before the game
William Buckner,
You have to add Gammons claiming in the pre-season predictions that Manny Delcarmen would be the best middle reliever in baseball. It was in print on ESPN.com
If the Reds trade Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox then they could go after Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, who is tearing up Triple A Oklahoma but is blocked at the big league level. The Rangers could also try to move outfielder Marlon Byrd and make room for Cruz. The Rangers are still talking to the Marlins about catcher Gerald Laird. The Reds are also interested.
Brandon, another possible speculation that Keppinger could be on the move if they don’t place Hairston as the RFer? Scott Hairston is their second best utility player. just keep hoping dude…
FWIW, Rosenthal has the deal as good as dead for now, too, along with the talking heads at ESPN.
“Guys this is a lose lose situation for the red sox! if manny stays, there club house will be in turmoil and he wont play hard for them. And if he goes Big Papy could leave his bat in the clubhouse , they will walk him every time!”
exactly
also not sure why were even discussing getting rid of Abreu, our RBI leader.
many of the players are big bible guys , who cares.
whatever your religion is if any do you really think if there is a g-d he cares who wins a baseball game??
the whole thank the lord stuff is moronic, Josh hamilton needing something to keep him in control is because he is a knucklehead etc….
bay to rays is back on
bay to rays is back on
Jeremy Hermida is not as good a player as Bobby Abreu. Why weaken yourself just to make a trade?
Although now Kevin Goldstein is reporting over at BP that the Marlins wanted more than just Manny for free, and Sheehan considers that reasonable considering the age/cost-control gap from Hermida to Manny.
I guess that also makes some sense.
McCutchen may be tough but Kontos and Coke have been on fire lately. Coke is a tough lefty and gives us a lot of versatility in that he can pitch out of the pen.
gammons blames farnsworth for his anurisym
“the whole thank the lord stuff is moronic”
Nice, stuart, class act.
why not trade abreu for either or hermida
because we have Nady as our RF replacement, who is clearly better than them.
Coke has great numbers but who knows if that will translate.
This is typical Theo garbage. He always tries to pull off these insane multi-team deals where the Sox win w/o giving much up and before they get consummated one of the other teams in the deals realizes it’s getting rooked by him.
What he should have done is trade Manny to the Marlins and then see if a separate deal could materialize, but he has to try to fleece the Pirates in the deal. They were right to pull out if they did because they were not getting equal value for Bay/Grabow and it didn’t seem to make sense why they were even in it since the Marlins didn’t want to give up the stud young pitcher.
They’ll get stuck with Manny and Manny will hit for the stretch run and for his next contract.
I hate that. They are this close to blowing up their team if they deal him.
Ugh.
Stuart- couldnt agree more
syracuse gary, really religion in baseball. you think your lord cares about your baseball team??
why our team is more moral then another team??
Brandon, some dude on ESPN just mentioned that Danny Richar could be a superior utility player. another speculation?
byrd would be AWESOME……. for the fans in the left field porch. Lots of souvenir balls flying over the wall.
Just Say No to Bye Bye Byrdie.
No, I’m just sayin, who cares what he says? Its moronic for him say a sentence? P.S. I haven’t been to church since Easter!!
Brandon, another possible speculation that Keppinger could be on the move if they don’t place Hairston as the RFer? Scott Hairston is their second best utility player. just keep hoping dude…
I’m hoping but Cashman has not even made a attempt to look at Keppinger which is weird because he is a hit w/ RISP waiting to happen and good for the PH role.
what do you mean he is not as good he is only 24 yrs old and has more home runs
stuart: thank you, for your input on religion & God.
like i care.
G. Love – it looks like it was the Marlins, and not the Pirates, who walked out of the deal. Baseball Prospectus is reporting (reasoning?) in their round table that the Marlins wanted something in addition to Manny plus cash, and couldn’t get it from either the Pirates (understandable) or the Red Sox (slighly less so), while the Pirates loved the package of prospects and Hermida they were receiving.
I also read…somewhere that there are members of Boston’s FO who are willing to deal straight up with the Marlins and get back Hermida, but that Henry didn’t like it because it weakens Boston’s World Series aspirations this year.
The Yanks should trade Abreu for Manny.
I can only imagine that ESPN is spinning this thing like crazy saying that in the end the Red Sox will be better off because Francona can heal the wounds blah blah blah…I am not in front of a TV due to being at work, but I can already hear this ringing through my ears.
I don’t think people will be as quick to believe it this time, though, considering how vocal Manny was in putting himself above the team and wanting no part of it, etc.
I’m hoping but Cashman has not even made a attempt to look at Keppinger which is weird because he is a hit w/ RISP waiting to happen and good for the PH role.
hey you never know, Cashman must had took notes when the Reds were in town.
hey stuart
http://www.thesportshernia.com.....nters.html
Syracuse my only point is it is a baseball game and I wish all the guys would just leave religion out of it. I respect everyones faith.. I really respect the guys that keep it private, I think religion is a private matter.
no insult intended…
Bay to the Rays would suck for us
saucy thanks great link..
jason bay is a nice player leave it at that…..
Keppinger is going to play where and how often???? Betemit is fine for what we need him for, if we get into October are top 9 will play all the time where maybe we need a pinch runner
that was pretty funny.
Brandon did your insider tell you that AARON and I are brothers? It was breaking news on ESPN and ROTOWORLD
Manny deal or no deal, Boston still hasn’t addressed their glaring holes of their 7-8-9 hitters and unsteady middle relief. Beckett has returned to 2006 form and Buchholz has been a disappointment.
If the Manny deal is off, how is the damage done by him repaired at the snap of a finger ?
saucy,
You always seem to amaze me. How the hell do you get these things so quickly? Its like you know its going to be discussed before it happens.
Rage on, stuart. Bash religion some more.
I don’t know why we let BOS, Manny and the media get us all riled up every year with “Trade Manny mania”. They were never going to deal him. We go through this every year with the same results – Manny stays in BOS. It’s ridiculous!
JIM(Baton Rouge): Is Paul Byrd going to get traded today?
Jonah Keri: (2:22 PM ET ) He’s a fringe pitcher at this point, Jim. He’d be a decent option at SP5 for the Yankees, but I wouldn’t expect the Indians to get much more for Byrd than the Yankees did for LaTroy Hawkins.
Forget about the Yankees for a second, there haven’t been any big deals today. Unless the Manny thing happens, and maybe Adam Dunn is traded, today was kind of a wash. All the really blockbuster deals happened already.
2 comments about today
Steve Phillips has no idea what he’s talking about, because if he did, one would think, he would still be a GM somewhere.
Doris, enough about the trade you reported 3 days ago, no one cares if it was made up or not. And your commentary is useless…..
I’m not usually about slamming other people on a blog, but enough is enough….
Brandon, quoting someone’s average with RISP is somewhat useless in my opinion. I’m pretty sure that a player being “clutch” has been disproven. Most players career RISP numbers are very close to their overall career numbers. If a player has excelled with RISP in one season it is likely because of luck.
Convinced Red Sox never really intended on trading Manny. Its all show, and they want to make him look bad and be able to say that nobody wanted him.
Manny is pretty weird and dopey, but he said something very interesting yesterday when he said look at what they did to Nomar and Pedro. True story
Stuart,
Now if only Presidential nominies would also keep their religion to themselves it would be a better world.
Depending on what the Rays give up, while I agree that Bay to Tampa would be terrible for the Yankees this year, I think it would be easier to swallow long-term than Bay to the Red Sox.
Reason being that Bay would almost assuredly be a rental (I cannot see the Rays extending him long-term), so his impact would be limited to this season and next, while simultaneously putting a dent in Tampa’s mountain of premium minor league talent longer-term.
The Red Sox, on the other hand, would have had a good chance of extending Bay, and he would have made a lot of sense for them long-term, since Manny is almost assuredly gone after next year, period. So the Red Sox are going to have to get creative this off-season if they don’t want to have an OF of Crisp/Ellsbury/Drew, and that would likely involve parting with some of *their* prospects.
1:17pm: Nick Cafardo doesn’t buy the “dead” talk. However, the Pirates may have turned away from the Boston-Florida scenario for Bay. The Rays are still a possibility for him.

Sos27, the world you hope for scares the hell out of me. But, I make a lot of money, so you probably wouldn’t understand.
don’t you people have jobs???
Sal,
I do practice a religion I just am smart enough to know you could care less about it.. and baseball players should keep it to themselves also…Like I am going to follow them!!!!!
they hit a ball and most are not known for there tremendous intellect and insight..
Keppinger is going to play where and how often???? Betemit is fine for what we need him for, if we get into October are top 9 will play all the time where maybe we need a pinch runner
2 outs, bottom of the 9 with runners on 2nd & 3rd. The Yanks are down 11-9 making a comeback while Girardi made a defensive replacement when the game was out of hand. Who would you rather have at bat? Keppinger or Betemit?
*My 2:26 PM comment should read Manny is almost assuredly gone after this year, or almost assuredly gone for next year. Guilty of thinking two different propositions and combining them in writing, as I generally do.
That is hilarious though:
Well said stuart.
Brandon,
Buster Olney was gone off ESPNews for an hour, and hes coming back after the commercial.. Were you texting with him?? Did we find out your secret.. Ughh ohhhh..
your secrets out!
Oh, it didn’t insert the picture. Here’s the link:
http://cache.boston.com/bonzai.....9202-1.jpg
sos – i have a great memory for useless information. the important stuff doesn’t seem to stick for some reason though.
You ED
I want you up in that situation! go get them!
“The Yanks should trade Abreu for Manny.”
Quiet time.
If Manny goes, do you guys think it hurts Ortiz? I personally think it would expose him and with less protection in the lineup, he’d be more in line for 20-25 HRs and a .250-.265 AVG.
Interesting:
10:02am: The Marlins can cross Ivan Rodriguez off their list of catching targets, though they did make a concerted effort according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.
Ed in October whos are you taking out??? Giambi for Sexson, then Wilson cause he can play 1st. THANK YOU for the question keep them coming
why is everyone reposting blurbs from a website everyone here already has open in another window – as if they’re going to be breaking news to people?? (MLBTR or ESPN or SI or BP) I’m pretty certain we’re all following it constantly. How about discussion about the trades instead of repeating reports already posted everywhere else?
Brandon, quoting someone’s average with RISP is somewhat useless in my opinion. I’m pretty sure that a player being “clutch†has been disproven. Most players career RISP numbers are very close to their overall career numbers. If a player has excelled with RISP in one season it is likely because of luck.
Patrick it’s not just this season. .324/.398/.459 w/ RISP for his career
****BREAKING NEWS****
Manny traded to the Orioles in exchange for Kevin Millar to shut the **** up.
“Convinced Red Sox never really intended on trading Manny. Its all show, and they want to make him look bad and be able to say that nobody wanted him.”
If it was orchestrated, it was to make it clear to Manny that they honestly tried to trade him, but it was the other teams’ faults that they couldn’t get something done. They’d hope that appeases him until November. I think it’s a non-issue. Manny will be Manny (any way you define that) for the last two months, though the Sox may need to give him some guarantee that they aren’t going to pick up the team option.
Hopefully Cafardo is right and there’s a still a chance here.
“2 outs, bottom of the 9 with runners on 2nd & 3rd. The Yanks are down 11-9 making a comeback while Girardi made a defensive replacement when the game was out of hand. Who would you rather have at bat? Keppinger or Betemit?”
Betemit, because he has more veteranness.
“I’m hoping but Cashman has not even made a attempt to look at Keppinger which is weird because he is a hit w/ RISP waiting to happen and good for the PH role.”
And you know this how? Did you know that Cashman was going to trade for Pudge or Nady before the deal happens? Just because you haven’t heard any rumblings about it doesn’t mean Cashman hasn’t spoken with the Cincy GM. Or does your *inside source* also have ears inside of Cashman’s office?
“Sos27, the world you hope for scares the hell out of me. But, I make a lot of money, so you probably wouldn’t understand.”
Syracuse Gary,
So your assuming i havnt and dont make alot of money. What difference would it make if i do or dont. I dont like someone telling me what religion they are over what they are going to do about the economy/war/health care etc.
FYI my house is paid for. Nuff said.
we still need another arm!
This is lame city. 90 minutes to go. Come on Cash break out those Jedi mind tricks and lets settle this rotation. Man I knew this was going to be our Achilles heel.
hey sunny, i wasnt posting them for anything other than conversation. i think it’s quite interesting that the marlins went after pudge and it now directly relates to us….. And i would rather see posts that are relevant, as opposed to the fake breaking news threads. Some people dont know about mlbtraderumors.com either and some people dont bother to look at it….
sooo take your sunny disposition to another blog if you dont like the conversation on this one!
ray I’m assuming w/ Keppinger no reason to get snippy
I’m on my way!
politics and religion… fun stuff
back to wacky trade proposals please!
Yeah, my bad, SOS27, I was attempting a liberal/conservative joke, and it was weaksauce. back to baseball
Update from Heyman:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1
Back to the Dodgers. They’re offering Ethier but the Sox (obviously) want Kemp.
I really thought it was going to happen this time, the guy who wrote that joke in this thread about flying Manny to Fenway park and telling him this is his new team, he may have been on to something
I still think the Mets may be lurking….
“back to wacky trade proposals please!”
ok! with Casilla on the DL, the Twins need a 2B…
Robby Cano for Francisco Liriano!
but sunny, why open all of those windows when you can just read all of the news here?
Thrillington-
If Boston trades Manny, that most definitely exposes Ortiz for the true player he is…the guy that got cut by Minnesota. He will have no protection in that lineup aside from maybe Lowell, not to mention he isn’t 100% to begin with. Ortiz is a garbage HITTER. I don’t even call him a baseball player. He only became a cult phenomenon after the 2004 ALCS. I think the Red Sox are in serious trouble if Manny gets dealt, which only makes me that much happier.
You think Moose will send Theo a ‘thank-you card’ if they trade Manny? How many HR’s does Manny have a against us this year, and how many are off Moose. I’m guessing at least 3.
“Manny is pretty weird and dopey, but he said something very interesting yesterday when he said look at what they did to Nomar and Pedro.”
You mean when they visciously exercised Pedro’s 2005 option months before they had to??? Or the malice they showed in offering only a 3 year deal for more money per season than the Mets ended up paying him??? Or when they insulted Nomar in 2004 by offering $60 million for 4 years (Nomar turned that down – he’s since made $33 million thru a series of 1 and 2 year contracts).
Not looking to defend the Red Sox here, but they treated those players perfectly fine and treated Ramirez better than both of them. He’s a petulent 12 year old in a 36 year old’s body. He’s been well paid. He’s been enabled (a big mistake by Boston)and he’s got no legitimate gripe. I hope the Yankees steer clear of him. He can hit. But he’s no good.
TurnTwo: Matt Cusick for Liriano, you mean!
I’ll kick your a** !
Best thing about this Manny garbage?
Theo’s had to waste so much time with trying to deal Manny, the Red Sox still haven’t done ANYTHING to shore up their bullpen.
The Yankees have improved by landing their RH OF, lefty reliever, replacement catcher.
The Red Sox have done bupkus.
http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....sheds.html
manny to doyers now
Am i the only one who goes to Fox sports for info? Speaking of baseball. Lets go Indians!! Tigers are only 4 games behind us. Im not too confortable with that.
the good thing is even if Manny stays with Boston he`ll be a distraction
I think Cashman is willing to go to war with Ian Kennedy for ten starts over caving into the Mariners for Washburn (which could still get done, even after today ends), and I can’t say I blame him.
The Yankees just need to make it to October, right? Whoever ultimately pitches for the Yankees in the 4/5 holes, whether it’s Washburn, Rasner, Ponson, or Kennedy don’t matter then. Kennedy could certainly be an upgrade over Ponson for ten or more starts. There’s always the Hughes wild card, too; if he can come back in September, that’s three or four fewer spots you’d have to give to whoever you had in those 4/5 starts for August.
“ray I’m assuming w/ Keppinger no reason to get snippy”
The reason to get snippy is that you’re claiming you have ‘inside sources’ that no one else has, suggesting that your opinions and your information are more valid than anyone else’s. Any schmuck on a blog can claim that he has ’sources.’ The ones who do aren’t posting to blogs.
Pete, is there any word on Pudge and the roster moves? Moeller DFA’d? Bruney activated?
“Theo’s had to waste so much time with trying to deal Manny, the Red Sox still haven’t done ANYTHING to shore up their bullpen.”
i love it. if he leaves, its good for us. if he stays it’s good for us. meanwhile Theo’s so tied up in this he has no time to address the real problems
Manny has been traded to Iraq!
Britton is getting called up. maybe we`ll get some return on JHaret Wright after all
“manny to doyers now”
Had to do a double take.lol
“Thrillington-

Nobody is going to take you seriously if you post stuff like this.
Was anybody shocked as to the emotional responses by Cashman, Farnsworth, and Girardi on the trade? I’ve never seen so much crying in one season, though Murcer was warranted. I wonder how Torre would have felt watching Kyle leave?
Come on Cash dump Pavano on some one quick!
I was crying when Farnsy left
(tears of Joy
)
If Manny is going to get traded its going to be just a 2 team deal, with the teams being FLA,LAD, or PHilly, however if and When Boston puts him on waivers that would leave Philly and LAD to afford him in August. Maybe the METS entertain that idea if Tatis struggles.
Britton = Bernie, from “Weekend at Bernies”
“I wonder how Torre would have felt watching Kyle leave?”
he would have been the one standing behind him with his plane ticket out of JFK.
“..I’ve always wondered how we came to be OK with ‘… he’s just not gonna play hard today,’ and that was OK. We’ve come a long way, especially in this city as devoted and as much as the Red Sox mean to people, the fact that you could have a Dustin Pedroia, a Jason Varitek, someone who would bleed and literally play his nine breaths to make an out or get a hit or win a game, and have somebody at the other end of the spectrum from a committed standpoint, you know these players love the uniform, love the fans, and believe in Red Sox and what it means to be a part of this and then you have guys who really don’t give a [expletive].†— 7.31.08, Curt Schilling chimes in on Manny
so there’s only about an hour left till the deadline and I haven’t seen the Yanks in any headlines…. should we assume Cash is done? These things take time to go through, and I haven’t heard anything reliable thus far, I know pete would have something up if there was anything going on… my take is that all this talk are just a bunch of rumors..
Farnsworth wasn’t great but he still is a human being, and when you accept someone into your family for sometime, you don’t want to see them go.
He was traded for the team necessity, but still don’t act like that its just cold crying tears of joy is straight up mean.
“Nobody is going to take you seriously if you post stuff like this.”
He’d get a lot more IBB’s, and pitchers would be a lot more careful with him otherwise. He’s definitely not a terrible hitter, but Manny’s protection being taken away would severely impact his performance. No one else — not Lowell, not Bay, not Drew — would cause anything close to the kind of fear that Manny does.
funny michelle… never heard that one before…
good point saucy… just askin’
Ray-
Have you looked @ Ortiz’s stats pre-2004? He was GARBAGE on Minnesota, which is why they cut him. He hit 31 in ‘03 and drove in 101. it wasn’t until 2004 that he started hitting 40+ home runs a season and wasn’t a household name until after the 2004 ALCS. IMO, he had some ‘extra juice’, but i don’t want to get into that arguement, but it’s my opinion to have. What did the guy do pre 2004 that warrants him to be this “great DH”?
The reason to get snippy is that you’re claiming you have ‘inside sources’ that no one else has, suggesting that your opinions and your information are more valid than anyone else’s. Any schmuck on a blog can claim that he has ’sources.’ The ones who do aren’t posting to blogs.
This is why I didn’t want to say anything, when it doesn’t get done people like you choose to blame me for lieing, I told this blog what was happening w/ the Manny situation because someone asked I didn’t push it I gave you facts about what was happening before anybody else did. Again if you don’t believe me it’s on you I’m not here to start a fan club.
Britton was called up to replace Farns
Britton getting called up means that business will improve for the city’s various steakhouses when the Yankees are at home.
If Boston really *wanted* to trade manny, they would’ve gone straight to a 2 team trade.
There’s a reason why you don’t see many 3 way trades, they’re too convoluted and someone’s always left holding the bag.
Not that there’s much chance of a manny thing happening, but can’t teams get an extension if they’re very close to a deal?
Britton is such waste. The guy is not a good pitcher. He has OK pitches and is nothing more than a mop up man. He is garbage.
im still holding out hope the yanks get greinke
W/O Manny, there is no reason to give Ortiz a pitch to hit. Nobody else in their lineup is a scary hitter, especially not Manny scary.
“Have you looked @ Ortiz’s stats pre-2004? He was GARBAGE on Minnesota, which is why they cut him. He hit 31 in ‘03 and drove in 101″
Those are not garbage numbers.
Curt Schilling taking a dump on a ball player? Now I’ve seen it all.
“I told this blog what was happening w/ the Manny situation because someone asked”
Ok, fine. If someone asks you what’s happening, just do this:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1
or this:
http://www.boston.com/sports/b....._repo.html
or this:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....e_deadline
That’s what everyone else is doing. No one is taking the info any less seriously.
“so there’s only about an hour left till the deadline and I haven’t seen the Yanks in any headlines…. should we assume Cash is done? These things take time to go through, and I haven’t heard anything reliable thus far, I know pete would have something up if there was anything going on… my take is that all this talk are just a bunch of rumors..”
Mikeyd: No one, and I mean, no one, heard anything about the Pudge/Farnsworth trade until it happened. I think the Nady/Marte deal (at least in that configuration) probably surprised a few people, too, especially since the Yankees had to outmaneuver several suitors who were in on both players.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Cashman has been exploring and working on deals all day, and that the media just has no idea that anything is going on. Many of these deals probably wouldn’t materialize, anyway, but if a deal in the next hour comes out of nowhere, I won’t be terribly surprised.
And there’s still that game of chicken with Seattle over Washburn, which can go all the way down to the deadline, I bet.
Finally, there’s also the possibility that Cashman is exploring and laying down the groundwork for waiver moves if he thinks there isn’t enough time to get a non-waiver deal done in the next hour.
Question –
Why can only some players be optioned to AAA, and others only DFA’d?
“Britton is such waste. The guy is not a good pitcher. He has OK pitches and is nothing more than a mop up man. He is garbage”
how would one know?
“If Boston really *wanted* to trade manny, they would’ve gone straight to a 2 team trade.”
Theo has this fettish for multi-team deals. He tries a multi-team deal every year and always is usually left at the alter. Same thing will happen in about an hour.
Breaking News on espn now means – we get to see gammons stutter for 5 minutes, while telling us a useless story to make phillips look worse than he already does and the he goes on the say i receieved a text message from someone close to manny….
Insiders say what
” Josh hamilton needing something to keep him in control is because he is a knucklehead etc”
No, you’re a knucklehead. Hamilton will crush you.
“This is why I didn’t want to say anything, when it doesn’t get done people like you choose to blame me for lieing”
Don’t think anyone believes your lying, dude. I do believe most now believe this source is more or less useless though.
seriously, whats with the hating on Brandon?
“Not that there’s much chance of a manny thing happening, but can’t teams get an extension if they’re very close to a deal?”
They can ask Selig for a little more time, and he’d grant it if a deal appeared to be close. But with the terms being rejected by the Pirates and Marlins and the Sox moving on to another team, nothing really seems close now.
yeah not really sure why what gammons just said was “breaking news”
And that rules that Britton is getting another shot. Bruney seemed like he was still a little wild in AAA, so I’m happy to see him being given more time to work that stuff out. Call him up when he is ready and he will be a huge help to us. Rush him and it’s probably a repeat of 2007.
Britton is just a stop-gap until the organization decides that either Bruney or Melancon are ready for their call-up. He is the all-time Hall of Fame legend for riding the Scranton-to-New York shuttle, and this time will probably be no different. I just hope Melancon becomes the next call up before Bruney, no slight against Bruney, but I just want to see what Melancon can do in the bigs.
If you think that Ortiz is going to just curl up and die as a hitter without Manny’s “protection,” you’re nuts. He’s not going to be pitched differently. The lineup around him is still strong. He’s not going to forget how to hit.
The comment about the Minnesota Ortiz being the real Ortiz is silly. In Minny they basically told him, “Don’t pull the ball so much. Don’t hit home runs. We want batting average from you.” Sounds stupid, right? That’s what they did. That’s why he wasn’t a power hitter there, while he was a great power hitter the instant he showed up in BOS.
56-
I was highlighting his only decent year pre ‘04.
‘98- 86 games 9 HR’s 46 RBI’s and 72 K’s
‘99 only played 10 games
‘00 130 games 10 HR’s 63 RBI’s 81 K’s
‘01 89 games 18 HR’s 48 RBI’s
‘02 125 20 HR’s 75 RBI’s 87 K’s
“seriously, whats with the hating on Brandon?”
There’s a difference between hating and suggesting that these ‘insiders’ don’t exist. There are colors between black and white, even if the Internet has a tendency to make us believe otherwise.
seriously, whats with the hating on Brandon?
Because I told Theo not to trade Manny
Minor league players on the 40 man roster have limited number of options. Once a team moves a player back from the majors to the minors, a team uses up one of those options. When a player is “out of options” he must be cleared through waivers first (or designated for assignment DFA) before giving that player the option to return to minor league ball or trade or release him.
Oh, and JUST SAY NO on Kemp, Colletti! Hold firm sir. Ethier or nothing.
Manny to LA. Done deal.
here’s a question…
would you guys be interested in Maddux if the padres put him on waivers….
Manny to LA done deal? source?
JL where did you hear this?? I hope its true
“This is why I didn’t want to say anything, when it doesn’t get done people like you choose to blame me for lieing”
you broke the manny situation, before any of the networks. Cannot ask for more than that.
“That’s why he wasn’t a power hitter there, while he was a great power hitter the instant he showed up in BOS.”
The juice couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it too, right? :\
“If you think that Ortiz is going to just curl up and die as a hitter without Manny’s “protection,†you’re nuts. He’s not going to be pitched differently.”
If you don’t think teams will pitch Ortiz differently knowing Manny isn’t behind him, you are NUTS. I’m sure Abreu would be pitched the same if A-Rod wasn’t behind him. It was pick your poison with those 2 guys, and most teams picked Ortiz, which is why he saw so many good pitches. W/O manny, he will see a ton less strikes.
“would you guys be interested in Maddux if the padres put him on waivers…”
no.
Manny to LA source is on SI.com…seems like those young players aren’t really thriving under Joe Torre. Surprise surprise. Give them another veteran.
E and sunny–
“When a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man Major League roster, he is on “optional assignment.” One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be “optioned out” three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.
When you hear that a player is “out of options,” that means he’s been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he’ll have to clear waivers (more on those below).”
http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
“He’s not going to be pitched differently.”
You’re nuts if you think this is the case.
A pitcher facing David Ortiz has a very different mentality with Manny Ramirez on deck than he has with JD Drew on deck. The mentality is ‘whatever you do, don’t give the guy on deck another baserunner.’ With Drew or Lowell you can get a little more crafty with Ortiz, assuming you aren’t just giving a pass with first base open. Pitchers are a lot more confident that they can get those two out.
new thread…
He didnt break any news before any stations, unless the stations were on break, again it was all over MLBtradrumors way before MR.baseball. guys if u left this blog once and awhile you would see theres others places to find out information.
““That’s why he wasn’t a power hitter there, while he was a great power hitter the instant he showed up in BOS.â€
The juice couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it too, right? :\”
Another topic i won’t dwell on too much, but he leaves Minny for Boston and transforms into a power hitting machine.
Brandon: Manny to LA?
“He’d get a lot more IBB’s, and pitchers would be a lot more careful with him otherwise. He’s definitely not a terrible hitter, but Manny’s protection being taken away would severely impact his performance. No one else — not Lowell, not Bay, not Drew — would cause anything close to the kind of fear that Manny does.”
They may not cause fear in the hearts of pitchers, but Lowell, Bay, and Drew aren’t exactly Juan Pierre either. Teams aren’t going to automatically be walking Ortiz if Manny leaves them. I also don’t buy into the whole protection thing either. Wasn’t Bonds still a great hitter when he had no one hitting behind him his final few seasons in SF?
“Ray-
Have you looked @ Ortiz’s stats pre-2004? He was GARBAGE on Minnesota, which is why they cut him. Who cares about what he did prior to 2003? If you really think that by simply having Manny hitting behind him made Ortiz a better player then I can’t argue with you. It’s pointless. Also in 2002, at the age of 26 ortiz hit 20 HR’s and had 75 RBI in 125 games. Those are good numbers. Could it be that he perhaps got BETTER as a hitter as he got older? That does happen to A LOT of players.
People would post a link with *news* if they had it.
“Britton is such waste. The guy is not a good pitcher. He has OK pitches and is nothing more than a mop up man. He is garbage.”
His numbers say otherwise, but I’ll just take your word for it.
“There’s a difference between hating and suggesting that these ‘insiders’ don’t exist. There are colors between black and white, even if the Internet has a tendency to make us believe otherwise”
do you think he cares? He dropped the word, on the entire ‘manny problem’, predicting he would sit out last friday’s game (vs yankees), before it was news. Hours later, manny is scratched from the lineup. The next day, the debacle is uncovered in the Boston Globe.
sounds like inside information, to me.
Manny has wanted out of Boston for 3 years now, come on people.
mlb.com reporting j bay to the ray
actually when he sat out against Seattle there was talk he may sit the next day against the Yanks, it was all-over the internet, thats not inside information. There was talk bout Manny getting traded for awhile. PLEASE stop
why don’t you guys stop going by numbers and actually watch a game.. please watch one game
BAY TO THE RAYS
I got insider on that.. by the way..
Ray-
point taken. arguing about protection is somewhat pointless being that you can’t really statistically measure that. And players do become better HITTERS all around, but not many start crackin 40 HR’s for the first time 6 to 7 years in the bigs. If he was such a great hitter, how didn’t Minnesota see that for 6 years? If you are telling me they consistently told him not to swing at inside pitches, i’m sorry i can’t believe that. He comes to Boston and the first year hits 31, after never cracking 20 for his first 6 years. THAN, next season, he hits 41, 47, and 54 respectively for the next 3 years. Oh, that happens a lot in baseball, mostly in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I wonder why?……
Brandon: Manny to LA?
That’s one of the 3 teams. I Wouldn’t be surprised. Rebecca I can’t recieve legit info today because it’s through GM now and my contact only has to do w/ Manny (his feeling, his status, what he wants and where he wants to go).
Bay to Rays… still not scared lol
for the record I reported it first, hahaha
45 minutes to live the dream of melky moving on
I know Yankee fans are enjoying the Manny thing. I’m a Sox fan and this Manny this is pretty painful for us and fun you guys. However, when I think it is more than I can bare I just think of Joe Torre in Dodger blue and then I’m not so blue.

#1 Commenting on Joe Torre isn’t going to get a lot of people in here riled up lol, considering a lot of us wanted to see him go (including muah)
#2 Yes, I am enjoying the manny thing
Jason Bay to the Rays. Dammit. Bad for us on two fronts, because Manny’s probably not going anywhere.
