Is that Manny being a Marlin? Not yet

Peter Abraham
July
31

The Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates continue to work on a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to Florida, Jason Bay to Boston and assorted prospects to the Pirates. This one will go right down to the deadline.

Scott Boras will let the deal happen. That way Ramirez becomes a free agent and gets a new deal with the Mets or some other team.

No word yet on what the Yankees may do.

In other trade news:

* Sad day for the Yankees, as the always-crushed Arthur Rhodes was traded to Florida. Why teams have interest in that guy, we’ll never know.

* The Red have a deal in place to send Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox if he approves. Because it’s Ken Griffey Jr., it sounds big. But he’s at .245/.355/.432.

  1. John H.

    Just trade him already.

  2. Mike

    Go Marlins!

  3. Chet

    Griffey has approved the trade.

I don’t think Yanks make a trade by 4pm as teams are looking around and saying they don’t want to be fleeced by C-Money.

IPK needs to pitch on Friday.

    Chet

  4. Jack

Noooooo…not Arthur “Hit the” Rhodes! I love seeing him pitch…

  5. edgar

    yankee fans will enjoy this.

“(David Ortiz’s) reaction upon learning of the trade that sent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit for Rodriguez was telling. The DH’s mouth was agape, the same reaction of passers-by after Ortiz proceeded to pass the news along.

One of the first to reap the benefits of Ortiz’ newfound information was Manny Ramirez [stats], the player whose image had dominated the clubhouse televisions throughout the afternoon due to trade rumors. Ramirez’ reaction was similar to that of his teammate, mouthing words to the affect of, “Oh no!””

Sad day for the Yankees, as the always-crushed Arthur Rhodes was traded to Florida. Why teams have interest in that guy, we’ll never know.

Probably because he’s got a lot of experience and has been pitching very well this season coming off of Tommy John surgery?
22 innings is not a large sample size, but he’s not as bad as you make him out to be…

  7. Jon

mko, rhodes always gets killed by the yankees though. my fingers are crossed that the marlins made that trade to package him in the manny deal and ship him to boston

  8. stf

I also think we’re going for maybe 1-3 against LAA. Game 2 & 4 pitchers are Ponson & Rasner. That tells you all. Get pitcher and start him tomorrow.

  9. al arodien

peter did you hear that boras wanted to ask from the tigers some incentives for pudge for waiving his no trade clause, but pudge told him shove it i waana be a yankee so dont make problems!

  10. Yankeefanfoev13

If the fish get manny, i think unless the mets get someone good before the deadline, you will be seeing florida in october

  11. LK

If we do not get a SP these moves are worthless

  12. tom

You don’t make Oct with crap pitching.

  13. mko

mko, rhodes always gets killed by the yankees though. my fingers are crossed that the marlins made that trade to package him in the manny deal and ship him to boston

Well, so do Bartolo Colon and Tim Wakefield. LOL. Still doesn’t make them bad pitchers…although Colon might not be as good as he once was.

The Marlins were looking for more relievers, so I doubt they’ll ship Rhodes out…would be nice though ;)

I also think we’re going for maybe 1-3 against LAA. Game 2 & 4 pitchers are Ponson & Rasner. That tells you all. Get pitcher and start him tomorrow.

Yankees would have to be happy with a split series…if it goes as expected they’re gonna have a very tough time today and on Sunday – Rasner vs. Lackey…

  14. Doris From Rego Park

any chance the yankees land paul byrd?

  15. Doris From Rego Park

tom verducci will be om WFAN shortly

  16. Steve in CT

They are dumb to trade Manny. Bay stinks.

  17. mko

“Yankees would have to be happy with a split series…if it goes as expected they’re gonna have a very tough time today and on Sunday – Rasner vs. Lackey…”

Sorry, I meant tomorrow (Santana vs. Ponson) and Sunday…

  18. Rockin' Rich

    Arthur Rhodes? Oy vey.

Well, Manny the Marlin would be a hoot, regardless. He lives in Pembroke Pines, anyway, not too far from the stadium. And he won’t have to ever speak English again if he comes down here, either.

  19. Rubin-Get Holliday and Duchsherer

We dont need a starter. A starter, right now, is a luxary to us. Kennedy has been dominant is Scranton, and there are other options in the farm. What I hope we get is another bullpen guy for the 8th. If we get a starter, which I dont think will happen, I hope its Kyle Lohse.

  20. mko

any chance the yankees land paul byrd?

    Let’s hope not!

If Cash can’t get anybody by trade I say let someone from AAA start – Kennedy or someone else. Can’t be worse than Ponson…

  21. ohgodno

We’ll be fine if we don’t get a starter I think, we’ve worked through having a shaky rotation before, and I think we can do it again.

Some W’s can be fashioned out of Ponson, Rasner, Aceves, Kennedy, and eventually Hughes.

Washburn isn’t THAT much of an upgrade. We shouldn’t sit here and think we’re getting a Cadillac when in fact its a Washing-Machine.

  22. Rubin

Apparently the Rays are talking Adam Dunn with the Reds. Maybe we do need to make another deal…

  23. Andrew

Crap pitching is not what the Yankees have. 3/5 guys in the rotation are stalwarts, mixing and matching the last 2 spots is what the team is going to do. The “rotate guys and figure out who is hot, who can excel where, etc.” has worked for the bullpen this year, and at this point it seems like that same method is going to be applied to the 4 and 5 slots in the rotation.

Kennedy, maybe external Washburn-type option, Aceves, Hughes, Pavano, that’s what you’re looking at, whoever pitches well will get to keep toeing the rubber. Also, I think Ponson will be out of the mix faster than Rasner, since the team can (presumably) option Rasner to AAA if necessary, but they’ll just have to DFA Sidney when the reaper finally comes for him.

    http://bostondirtdogs.boston.c.....8_nesn.jpg

  25. mko

What I hope we get is another bullpen guy for the 8th.

    Why?
Our bullpen has been awesome, we got Marte to replace Farnsworth and ANYBODY from AAA is better than LaTroy…so I think we’re fine.

THURSDAY, 10:33am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Reds seek players such as Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson in a Dunn trade. Niemann probably could be had.

WOW don’t they think that’s a little too steep 8O

  27. mko

    Jon Heyman, SI.com:
“Ken Griffey Jr. has approved the trade sending him to the Chicago White Sox.”

  28. Jon

ESPN and MLB.com are not on top of their game today and they should be. They still have the Griffey trade as breaking news and don’t even acknowledge that he’s already accepted the trade.

  29. Matt-LI

Our trade for a SP will come from our system. IPK will be up in a week, or when Aceves is done with his pitch counts and fully healthy again, he will have his shot. Unless Ponson, and/or Rasner really WOW us this weekend, their expiration date has come up.

  30. norman

Rhodes was lights out for a pretty good stretch in Seattle. The thing is, after a few years of solid middle relief work he kept trying to become a closer and just couldn’t do it. I know some people that met him; supposedly he’s a pretty nice guy, and was always popular with his teammates.

I’m sure the Yanks will still find a way to crush the M’s anyway, Rhodes or no Rhodes.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

This site is usually a couple of hours ahead of ESPN.

    SI is usually better though.

  32. saucY

question. will the Marlins have the $20M option on Manny for 2009, or does that go away with the trade?

I know we had the option on Abreu for 2008 after a trade from Philly.

Are these contract specific type options, or what?

  33. E-Man

Something tells me that this Manny deal isn’t going to happen. I hope it does. I really really really do. but I don’t think it will.

  34. JR Yankees

    Question:

I see that Pudge has chosen to wear #12. Would this future HOFer be deemed worthy enough to wear #21 or would this create a fanbase meltdown again?

  35. Doris From Rego Park

    Verduccci on FAN now

  36. dan

I dont know, maybe its me, but if Manny leaves the division, and Jason Bay replaces him, and maybe Adam Dunn comes…..I think i would sign off on that, thats how much Manny has destroyed the Yankees…Its a banner day if this comes down

  37. Jon

saucy the option will still be there but seeing as how the marlins payroll is 22 million total, i think they may pass on picking that up. just a hunch

  38. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Verducci saying anything?

  39. saucY

but they could pick up the option and then trade him (similar to Sheff 2 offseasons ago)? wouldn’t that be the smartest way to go?

probably p!ssing Boras off in the process

  40. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

The Angels just got done absolutely obliterating the Red Sox (games pitched by Buchholz, Beckett, Daisuke I believe) and the Yankees intend to throw Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner at them for 2 of the 4 games. This might be the toughest series the Yankees will have all year (until they play the Angels again in LA).

God help us. No sweep, please.

  41. Matt-LI

Supposedly Manny will not accept the trade if the team is going to pick up his option. The only way he goes is if they agree to decline it at the end of the season.

  42. Doris From Rego Park

he likes the irod deal but said molina has been a great receiver for the pitchers and its a question mark if irod can handle them the same way. said yanks will never kyle in september/october. washburn deal isnt dead, will likely come down to the last hour

  43. Jon

verducci doesnt think mannys getting dealt

  44. Chris NY

Not that they would, but technically, the Marlins could pick up Manny’s team options for the next 2 years. So the trade doesn’t really gaurantee 100% he’ll be a free agent yet.

  45. saucY

But the Angels swept in Fenway. That usually leads to a “Boston Hangover”…

    lets hope so!

  46. TurnTwo

“question. will the Marlins have the $20M option on Manny for 2009, or does that go away with the trade?”

it goes with him and his contract, but i believe he’s placing the condition on waiving his no-trade that the options will not be picked up by the team he goes to.

obviously, if he goes to Florida, there is no chance they’d pick up a $20 million option, anyway.

but, for example, if he went to the Mets, the only way he’d agree to waive his no-trade to go was if Minaya guaranteed Manny the Mets would not pick up the option for next year.

  47. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

but they could pick up the option and then trade him (similar to Sheff 2 offseasons ago)? wouldn’t that be the smartest way to go?

probably p!ssing Boras off in the process

Good point about the Marlin’s payroll, Jon. Besides that even, I wonder if that would anger Manny enough to the point where he WOULDN’T waive his no trade clause? Then again this point may be moot since I heard he had to sign the papers 24 hours in advance (meaning the papers would have already been signed)

  48. Doris From Rego Park

jon- he didnt say that. he said he thinks the manny deal WILL get done

  49. Chris NY

“Supposedly Manny will not accept the trade if the team is going to pick up his option. The only way he goes is if they agree to decline it at the end of the season.”

Sorry, didn’t see this post when I wrote my last one… If that’s true, then I suppose it does just about gaurantee (based only on a handshake, I’m assuming) free agency.

  50. Doris From Rego Park

“the red sox are going to try and make this happen no what they have to do”

“saucy the option will still be there but seeing as how the marlins payroll is 22 million total, i think they may pass on picking that up. just a hunch”

Wasn’t their payroll a lot higher during their World Series years? Meaning, they have the money if they choose to spend it, no?

Again, moot if he’s making it a condition to agreeing to waive his no trade… But couldn’t they afford him if they wanted to?

  57. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Arod .323 AVG can't buy a hit w/ RISP) (X-factor my ***)

Brandon said Manny signed the papers yesterday.

Yup that is a fact, I won’t deny that.

I agree with you, E-Man. I think the Manny trade talk is much ado about nothing.

  59. Vince

Some reports out of Boston say Manny showed up early and cleaned out his locker, signed his approval papers, and left.
Approval from the Commissioner’s office is the next step.

  60. Jon

the marlins payroll was higher in the world series years because john henry was running the team and offered some flexibility. now loria owns the team and he’s the cheapest guy on the planet

  64. gayle

Has anyone heard what the Reds get in return yet

  65. Laura - Not ready to give up just yet!

This Griffey deal makes no sense from the White Sox’s perspective. What are they going to do with him? I don’t think he can play CF anymore. If he becomes the DH, what do they do with Thome? Play him at first? This is truly a head scratcher.

  66. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

If Manny doesn’t want to stay in Boston I can’t see Theo and co keeping him there.

I gotta go get my teeth prodded and poked at and still remain in good enough spirits to buy my mother a birthday card. Catch you all later.

  67. mko

    Chris NY:
I read an article with some quotes from the Marlins owner today. He basically said that he just doesn’t want a big payroll because the stadium is empty anyway (even now that they’re still in contention).

  68. Matt-LI

If Boston put Manny in a helicopter, swung it around the east coast a little bit for a couple of hours, and then landed it at Fenway and told him that he has been traded to the Boston Red Sox… He would probably wouldn’t even know the difference.

  69. Shawbler

If the Manny deal dies, looks like Pittsburgh will be the team to kill it. We’ll have to confiscate all those thank you cards we sent them for Marte and Nady.

Can’t say I blame them, though. Stanton -and- Tucker not in the deal now? What exactly are they getting? Florida can’t just do Hermida for Manny + Cash.

the only thing better then Manny being traded is the Manny deal falling apart. they are in ruins.

  74. Chris NY

“Some reports out of Boston say Manny showed up early and cleaned out his locker, signed his approval papers, and left.”

He also supposedly sold his condo in Boston and sold all his Sox memorabilia a couple years ago… I’ll believe it when I see it. I believe they’re seriously trying to get rid of him, as they have tried in the past. Whether or not they’ll get enough back this time to make it worth doing, remains to be seen. As others have said, the biggest difference this time is that he’s at the end of his contract instead of in the middle of it. Meaning, teams will take him for 2 months.

  75. Peter Rabbit

Matt-LI— Best constructed joke of all time on the LoHud.

  76. Nick in SF but now in Ocean City, MD

The Red Sox don’t really need to trade Manny if it’s not a great deal for them. Manny isn’t the type who let his personal disappointment over not being dealt affect his performance on the field, is he?

  80. Andrew

I can’t wait for Manny to begin the 2008 version of Operation Shutdown when the trade falls through.

  81. Chris NY

mko, that makes me angry. teams like that get money from the Yankees (revenue sharing) and don’t even spend it. I can’t stand that, they should be forced to use it.

How will they ever fill their seats if they don’t field a better team, year after year. If I lived in Miami, I wouldn’t root for them either. Every time they have a good team and win a WS, they get rid of everyone.

  82. mko

jermome from the bronx wants the yanks to trade for brad penny

The Dodgers aren’t sellers, why would they trade Penny? And why would we want him, he’s been awful this season…

Manny isn’t the type who let his personal disappointment over not being dealt affect his performance on the field, is he?

If he actually *takes* the field…

  83. Jon

thats why revenue sharing is bogus

  84. Fredo Corleone

“Brandon said Manny signed the papers yesterday.”

Reading this, I envision a scene similar to DB Sweeney as Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out struggling to write out his X on the confession.

  85. Rockin' Rich

The Marlins are on the verge of getting a new stadium.

Loria probably figures that if the team makes a good run at the end of the season, the chances are better for the local politicos to move forward with the deal. There’s also a lawsuit pending, which might be settled if they allow a vote on the deal, and that would also be affected by a nice surge from the team. (If Huizinga would have held on for another year, he’d have had his stadium.)

True, the stadium will be built on the old Orange Bowl site, making it even more inconvenient for the locals to get to, but if Loria and his midget ex-stepson David Sampson are going after Manny, that’s the back-story to keep in mind.

  86. Confucius

Twins dangling Boof Bonser now. Given how generous they’ve been to us, they’d probably want Cano, Marte, and a good AA prospect.

  87. Jon

i’ll take boof for igawa and cash

  88. Yankee Lover

If Griffey hits 245 in the NL that makes him a lefty hitting Richie Sexson (215 BA) without the good glove in the AL

  89. Andrew

Boof would be great in the bullpen, we really need to replace Farnsworth’s ability to give up the long ball.

  90. mko

    Boof Bonser

    Aw hell no!
If the Yankees acquire him I will not watch the games he pitches. I’m sorry, but I just can’t warm up to somebody with the name “BOOF”.

And his numbers are awful as well!

The Yankees won’t trade for crap pitchers, what good would that do?

  91. Fredo Corleone

“The Red Sox don’t really need to trade Manny if it’s not a great deal for them. Manny isn’t the type who let his personal disappointment over not being dealt affect his performance on the field, is he?”

He hasn’t been in the past. Consider that they put in on waivers (larglely to show him how little interest there was in him at $20M per season), had him traded to the Rangers for Arod, and discussed trading him to the Mets, all within the past 5-6 years. However, this time may be different. He has lost his teammates and a huge chunk of the fanbase. He’s intelligence-challenged, so he probably isn’t cognizant of the fact that shutting it down and quitting will hurt him more than it helps.

Red Sox have been sucking his toes prety much since he’s been there and now they’ve stopped. He doesn’t like it. I think they are better off moving him.

  92. Yankee Lover

Griffey hitting 245 in the NL is equal to Richie Sexson (215 BA) without the good defensive glove in the American League not such a big deal

  93. Steve

I dont see how the Red Sox expect to get Bay and Grabow for a rental of Manny whom isnt even a guarantee to actually play for your team. Not only that, but the Red Sox are in a poor negotiating position so how can they hold out for Bay? And I still dont see what benefit the Pirates get out of this entire deal. They arent getting Manny, they are giving up Bay and all they get are “prospects”. You have to figure they could get more for Jason Bay than just prospects.

  94. NongEyeJon

Momentum is being made on the Manny deal, according to Olney. If they get Bay…oh man, the Bo Sox don’t strike fear into me as in the past…get it done!!!

  95. justin

Why don’t the yankees trade for boof boner. The twins will basically give him away to make room for liriano. They have too many starters and we could use a 5th starter that’s not ponson

  96. S.o.S.27

We already have a Boof. Boof Ponson. Dont need another.

  97. CB

Manny is irreplaceable. And in the end I don’t think this deal will get done.

That said – if the Sox can actually trade him and get Bay and Grabow back they will have done very, very well for themselves.

That return would be very impressive given the terrible position Manny has put the Sox in. If Theo can actually pull that off he will have really made the best out of a bad situation – a situation in which most of his leverage was taken away.

Lots of rumors but in most of the proposed deals I’ve seen the Pirates are getting the short end of the stick. Not enough of a return for Bay if the Marlins aren’t sending Stanton back with the other players.

If the Marlins have made Stanton untouchable (which I believe has been their position on him for a while as he’s arguably their best prospect after Maybin and Miller) then Pittsburgh isn’t getting enough back – at least from the proposed deals.

As it is – if i were the Bucs I would not trade Bay unless I got back a potential front line starter back in the deal. They already have good outfield depth with McClouth and McCutcheon in place and Pearce ready to come up.

Bay’s the last valuable trade piece they have – the guy who could accelerate their rebuilding process by years if they get the right deal.

Right now I don’t see how this proposed deal is the one that will do that for them. The Sox and the Marlins (especially the Marlins) are doing comparatively better in this deal at the expense of Pittsburgh.

But in the end its Pittsburgh so all bets are off…

  98. JR Yankees

The only problem with Operation Manny Shutdown is that he is playing for a contract this year. In ‘06 he knew he was getting his 20M the next year and even the year after that.

It may become uncomfortable but I wouldn’t expect Manny to completely shut down again. In fact, I think he may become a bigger pain for us than he is now.

  99. t

    What about Lohse?
    http://myespn.go.com/s/convers.....ry/3512452
12-3, the yankees need a starter… instead of paying washburn absurd amounts of money why not get lohse.

  100. Fredo Corleone

“they are giving up Bay and all they get are “prospects”. You have to figure they could get more for Jason Bay than just prospects”

Didn’t you think the same about Nady and Marte?

  101. S.o.S.27

I think the Yankees should swoop in and give the Pirates some prospects steal Bay. Then trade Abreu for Ramirez. Cashman can do it!! I have all the faith in him.

  102. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

i’ll take boof for igawa and cash

I would rather keep Igawa. Seriously.

  103. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

The Sox could deal directly with Florida. They have outfielders to cover his play, getting some decent prospects that they could possibly spin for Dunn.

I think the Sox have turned big time on Manny. For them to back out is still possible, but probably not in the best interests of their team. It will hurt them either way.

  104. Santa Claus

This deadline is worse than Dec. 24th on Fifth Avenue or a ‘burb Wal-Mart.

  105. Jeremy

The Sox won’t move Manny for the sake of moving him. They know he’s aware that, if they keep him and decline his option, his performance this year directly impacts the contract he gets next year.

Manny may be miserable off the field but he has never shown any signs of letting his emotions affect him on the field. He will not shut down like Derrek Bell or Sheffield on the Brewers. He will play like someone hungry for a big contract and another ring and the Sox will put up with his behavior for a few more months.

My guess is the Sox are seeing if they can get some complementary pieces in the deal besides Bay, such as bullpen help. If they can, the deal goes forward. If they can’t, they keep a guy who is still a hugely productive player even if he is a head case.

  106. mko

    What about Lohse?

The Cardinalds are looking for a bat and reliever for him. Who would you want to part with?

  107. NongEyeJon

JR Yankee, I agree that if Manny stays in Boston, he will not shut down. In fact, I think he’ll go on a tear to boost his free-agent value. He won’t get the $20 million he thinks he can get, but he’ll be clutch.

  111. Jeremy

The Griffey deal is especially strange because the White Sox already have productive players at LF, RF, and DH and the thought of Griffey in CF is absurd.

  112. Matt-LI

Anybody else realize that A-Rod leads the AL in avg.? Didn’t even notice…

Anybody else also realize that you don’t get jackshipp done at work the week of the trade deadline?

  113. Andrew

I think Manny will still put up his numbers, JR, but I think since he’s known as a pick-and-choose effort guy normally, that will only become more and more evident if he remains in Boston for 2 more months with hostility and awkwardness still swirling around him and the team. I guess my joke was more about that if it gets really ugly in Boston (which it might if he sticks around), Manny might let it roll off him by crawling into a shell so to speak.

Plus, I don’t think his performance over the next two months will change much about how much a team pays him next year. He has such a huge reputation as a hitter, and his numbers will still be there at year’s end regardless of where he ends up, that he will not lose too many dollars because of this fiasco.

  114. Fredo Corleone

“Manny may be miserable off the field but he has never shown any signs of letting his emotions affect him on the field.”

Jeremy, he sat and watched three fastballs down the middle from Rivera in a Yankees/Sox game. He benched himself with phantom injuries to avoid tough, hard throwing, right handed pitchers. He’s quit on his team in August…twice. Can’t say his actions don’t affect the on the field product. At least not this year.

  115. Yankee Trader

Ken Griffey to the White Sox- so where do they play him CF??? Another White Sox trade in the works??

Manny goes to the Marlins with the understanding they won’t pick up his 20M club option. What a fool!! What if no team wants him @20M/year based on his antics. What if his ‘KNEE” acts up after the trade, let’s say October, and the MRI shows significant damage, needing surgery. He’s now screwed, because no one will want him until he proves himself healthy.

  116. Confucius

    “why not get lohse.”

Because with his 12-3 record, the Cards are selling incredibly high. Lohse is not as good as a 12-3 record even in the NL. We’d have to give up too much.

  117. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but why are the Yankees not even talking to the Indians about Paul Byrd? It seems like he’d be a good fit, no? He makes less money than Washburn and is only signed through this year, and is another one of those “knows how to win” grizzled veteran types.

And I think the people running the Indians are a bit more competent then the idiots in Seattle, so they might be able to actually (gasp) work out a fair deal!

  118. PittsburghYankeeFan

My understanding of this trade is that it has come down to Pittsburgh and Florida haggling over the prospects.

Bay is all the Sox are getting, and despite many tries from the Sox enablers in the media (who are letting their bias come through instead of steady reporting), the owner wants this done.

When the owner wants something done, it generally happens. Jason Bay is more ready than the two picks the Sox will get at the end of the season, and the Manny distraction will be over.

However, as was said on SOSH last night, Manny is the best Sox hitter in a generation. Too bad he’s such a meshugganah.

Pittsburgh wants to restock the farm after Littlefield screwed it up. This will take 1-2 seasons. The Pirates are planning for 2010. The Marlins have great prospects, and the Pirates want some of them.

This is all about the Marlins and Pirates now. The Sox are bystanders.

    Fredo,
You forgot to mention taking his sweet time getting to first on the no hitter Lackey was pitching. There is a reason why there is a saying Manny is being Manny.

  120. Joe

Why bash Arthur Rhodes? I know you love delivering Op. Ed. more than just being a journalist, but Arthur Rhodes draws your ire, too?

And why are people still interested in him, Pete? Perhaps it is because 4 of the last 7 years he has had an ERA in the 1’s or 2’s, he is left handed, and has pitched in tons of big games. Sounds at least a little interesting, no?

  121. Yankee Lover

Hope Red Sox get Bay for Manny. Bay will be a poor mans JD Drew, certainly not as scary at the plate like Manny

  122. Ninja Burglar

Does anyone have any insight on Gaby Hernandez, the prospect the Marlins gave to the Mariners for Arthur Rhodes? Just wondering for a comparison as to what Seattle’s expectations are for receiving prospects for their players…

  123. William Buckner

    CB,
Dead on right. Sox would be smart to make this deal. Bay is a better catch then the two draft picks and this yrs FA class in OF is very weak.

My guess is the hold up is Pitt. I figure they need at least 3 prospect to make this work for them. Otherwise, keep Bay and move him in off season.

I know keeping Manny makes them better this year, but will hurt them after he goes FA.

  124. Timothy Clougher

    IMO:

The Sox are in a no win situation, they can’t replace his production, and keeping him now would be a huge distraction in the middle of a pennant race. They could give in and pick up his option, but I doubt that will happen, he already lost his team mates and fan base.

  151. NongEyeJon

Manny wouldn’t block the trade..its up to the teams now and they seem to be haggling. This will go down to the wire.

  152. Jon

The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, are “kicking around” the idea of adding Indians righty Paul Byrd, according to major-league sources.

As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the Yankees and Indians had not yet exchanged names, but a deal could come together quickly if the Yankees decided to pursue it.

The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies. For the Yankees, Byrd would be a potential upgrade over right-hander Darrell Rasner.

  153. Timothy Clougher

Phillips has trashed us so many times it’s hard to even listen to him.

  154. CB

“Sound like Pittsburgh is beginning to balk on this accoridng to Will Carroll at BP. Seems they aren’t happy with the prospects.”

As proposed – this is not a good deal for them.

As a yankee fan I’m mixed – I definitely want to see Manny go – but getting back Bay or Bay and Grabow would be a relative coup for the Sox.

They have no leverage here. Despite that they would be getting back an all star – an all star signed to make $7.5M next year and possibly a decent LOOGY – which they could really use.

The only way this deal gets done to such a relative advantage for the sox is if another team in the deal gets taken advantage of.

    Right now that’s the Pirates.

If I were the Pirates the primary interest in getting involved with the Manny talks would be to put more pressure on Tampa. That’s the deal the Pirates should try to get done. Getting back Hellickson or Wade Davis is the kind of trade you make when getting rid of a guy like Bay.

And if Stanton is not in the deal the Pirates have no reason to make this trade. They really don’t.

I want to see Manny go. That’s what most yankee fans would like to see. But to think getting back Bay and Grabow isn’t a great deal for the sox isn’t correct. Under the circumstances that’s a great deal – one that only gets done because the pirates are being foolish.

  155. Timothy Clougher

    Dis-agree maybe over Ponson.

  156. Confucius

“i think the pirates are getting the best of this deal.”

The Mariners’ agreement to send reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins may be giving the Yankees hope that perhaps Seattle will also relent and agree to trade Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees. Word is, Hernandez was on the table for weeks. Perhaps the Mariners will also relent on Washburn. The Yankees have generously offered to pick up the rest of the $14 million remaining on Washburn’s contract through 2009 while sending them a middling prospect. Seattle has been calling around to try to beat that, but the suspicion is they won’t. So maybe the Yankees will get Washburn after all.

  174. Jon

    Gammons:
A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7M to cover Ramirez’s contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9M and two prospects for Jason Bay.

So it looks like the Marlins are being the difficult ones.

Bay’s gone 30/100 twice and is on his way to do it again this year. He definitely fell of a bit last year, but that would appear the exception rather than the rule. I think he’s probably a little better hitter than Drew.

“Jason Bay can not do half of what Manny does for the sox,”

Bay is not nearly the hitter Manny is but he’s much better than people are giving him credit for.

The other big difference between them – Manny is 36 and Bay is 29. A 29 year old Manny and a 29 year old Bay is blow out. But age does matter some.

Here’s a very interesting comparison of what both Manny and Bay are projected to do over the rest of the year.

Manny is projected to be 26 runs better than an average LF. Bay is projected to be 24 runs better than an average LF.

Now I know people will say statistics are useless, etc., etc. – but this comparison is very interesting and shows how productive a player Bay is.

It’s not easy finding .900 OPS players and that’s what Bay is.

He’s a fine player, though not much of a big-game player considering both his lack of experience and the lack of clutch hitting pointed out by Peyton. He’s good enough that the Sox would not do too poorly with this deal considering the situation.

But they’d be a -significantly- weaker team. Ortiz/Manny has been the undisputed heart of the ballclub for the last six years. Two world championships and two innings away from a possible third are squarely at the feet of that tandem. They’ve destroyed high-quality pitching, especially Manny. Manny has also made Ortiz a better hitter. He’s on another level of performance that Bay can only dream of.

CB – I agree with you, for the most part. I don’t think the Red Sox are merely bystanders at this point (as PittsburghYankeeFan suggested earlier), though, since some of the reports suggested the Red Sox were kicking in a prospect to the Pirates as well, and I think that can potentially change the entire flavor of the deal.

The Red Sox certainly have pitching talent that the Pirates would be interested in, thinking specifically of Bowden. I think the Red Sox would understandably balk at kicking in a prospect because they are subsidizing the Marlins, but it seems like they might do that *anyway* even if they don’t get Bay (the three-way falls apart), as Will Carrol suggests.

I think I’d rather the Red Sox get Bay for Manny and cash, though, than get Kemp for Manny and cash (another potential outcome, if LA becomes the third wheel to replace the Pirates). On the other hand, if that happens, there’s probably a 50-50 shot Bay still goes to the Rays, which would be a huge pick-up for them.

This is a really, really interesting dance that has serious implications for the AL East, not just this year, but through the end of the decade. If the Rays add Bay, you have to seriously consider that this three-team race will go down to the wire, and they probably look like the favorites next season as their young talent gets a year older and matures. If the Sox add Bay, it’s still a three-team race, but I think the Rays would have the best shot at faltering down the stretch, since they’ll be forced to rely on Baldelli for that last, big bat they need right now.

Of course, the Red Sox can still end up with Bay and the Rays could look at adding Dunn, which would be a strong and underrated pick-up, in my opinion.

I’m just glad that Cashman has already taken care of business without mortgaging the future. As it stands right now, the Rays are likely going to have to give up some young chips with value to improve their team this year, and that only helps the Yankees moving forward. I’d love for the Red Sox to have to surrender young talent for their LF for the rest of the decade, whether that be Bay or Kemp, but I’m very pessimistic that happens.

“I really didn’t want to go here, but what about the clutch hits Manny provides that is hard to replace.”

I think many yankee fans are confusing two separate issues.

Issue 1. Manny leaving the sox.

That in and of itself is a devastating loss – he is irreplaceable.

Issue 2. Is trading Manny under these awful circumstances for the sox for Bay and Grabow a good deal?

Yes – that’s a very good deal – given the circumstances.

Sure I want to see Manny go. My preference is that he goes in a way in which the Red Sox are the ones who come out on the short end of the stick – not the pirates or the Marlins.

To get Bay and Grabow or even Bay alone for Manny given the circumstances would be Theo making close to the best out of an awful situation for his club.

I’d much prefer Theo be forced to take a bad situation and be forced to make a bad deal.

You can see know that’s what the Marlins (a shrewd club) are trying to do in asking for more money and talent. The Marlins – unlike the Pirates – see that Boston has no leverage and are in a precarious situation. When you try to make trades from a position of weakness – you get hurt, often very badly. The marlins see that and are trying to use Boston’s lack of leverage against them.

Boston is turn is trying to make up for their lack of leverage by taking advantage of a third team – the pirates.

If this were to become reduced to a two team trade – the Sox and the Marlins – the Sox would have to make a very bad trade.

Keeping Manny this time is an enormous risk for them. He could completely implode their entire year.

That’s the risk assessement they have to make.

As a yankee fan I hope they make the wrong decision – but they’re a very well run club and don’t make many bad calls.

I don’t think the deal gets done in the end. I thin boston will do what they always do – live with the risk. But we’ll see.

From ESPN’s Trade deadline special (12:39 p.m.): Buster Olney says of Ramirez, “If he’s not traded by 4 p.m. today, there’s a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly.”

  229. frits

his face was getting all twitchy…

one other thing that was interesting about gammons – earlier in the year (it was this year, right?), gammons was mad about farnsworth throwing at someone (my recollection of this story is clearly poor), and he called him a AAA pitcher on baseball tonight.

i found that funny, because gammons praised farnsworth as a “very good pitcher” when the pudge-farns swap was announced.

  230. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Arod .323 AVG can't buy a hit w/ RISP) (X-factor my ***)

  231. Confucius

“I think the Red Sox would understandably balk at kicking in a prospect because they are subsidizing the Marlins, but it seems like they might do that *anyway* even if they don’t get Bay (the three-way falls apart), as Will Carrol suggests.”

The framework handed to Selig’s office has Boston sending a prospect to each team. Lowrie and Hunter Jones (lefty relief prospect close to callup) have both been mentioned for the Pirates.

  232. The Fallen Phoenix

As for those who say Bay has no big-game experience, I already attempted to debunk how much that claim matters in a previous thread. Ortiz had no big-game experience (at least, he hadn’t performed at a high-level in big-game situations) before he was signed by the Red Sox, and even that didn’t really materialize until 2004 (granted, he had a .900 OPS ALCS in 2003, but his ADLS line that year was miserable, as were his lines in the 2002 postseason with Minnesota).

Bay is a very, very good player, and the Red Sox will have done well for themselves if they add him just for Manny and cash. He’s a low-cost replacement for Manny next year, and the Red Sox could potentially sign him to a below-market extension after that to keep him through 2013 or so. On the other hand, if the Red Sox don’t deal Manny and let him walk away at the end of the season, they’ll have to surrender their own prospects to get that kind of bat (whether it be Bay, Holliday, or someone else) over the offseason.

Right now, it looks like they’ll be able to buy Bay with Florida’s prospects, and if the Red Sox can do that, it’s a coup. Sure, paying the rest of Manny’s salary hurts, but Boston has money, and they can afford to eat salary.

I really hope one of Boston’s A prospects gets included in this deal. I’d prefer Bowden, but would settle if someone like Lars Anderson gets included in this deal. It seems really unlikely, though.

No, he’s not. He used to be, but he isn’t anymore. Right now he’s a little (not a lot) better than Bay with the bat. Manny is among the worst outfielders in the majors. Bay is not. Manny is among the worst baserunners in the majors. Bay is not. Manny decides not to play sometimes. Bay does not. It’s not inconceivable – hell, it may even be likely – that the Sox come out ahead.

Confucius – outside of Lowrie, I hadn’t really been hearing names. As I mentioned before, the more blue chip talent the Red Sox surrender in any deal, the better. It’s really, really easy to understate how good Bay can be for Boston for the next two years (miniumum) at a bargain price if healthy, and if all you need to surrender is a player you’d jettison at the end of the year for nothing *anyway*, it’s the kind of deal you make, almost without thinking.

A motivated Manny is still probably better than Bay for the remainder of the season, but it doesn’t seem the Red Sox will have that luxury, and I’d bet money on Bay outperforming Manny at a better price for the next year or two. Remember, he’s only 29, and still has a good few years of his prime left.

Just like I’ve argued that Farnsworth frightened me every time he took the mound in a big spot, despite his numbers, Jason Bay would not frighten me in a big spot for the Red Sox. You pay too much attention to Manny’s ‘declining numbers.’ It was just three months ago that the guy was absolutely murdering Mussina and the rest of our staff. We could not get him out.

  268. CB

“I think I’d rather the Red Sox get Bay for Manny and cash, though, than get Kemp for Manny and cash (another potential outcome, if LA becomes the third wheel to replace the Pirates).”

    Phoenix,

I agree with you – getting Kemp in any way back for Manny would be highway robbery and close to the worst case scenario for the yankees.

That said i don’t believe that rumor one iota. Frank McCourt is not that kind of owner.

He already killed the Dodgers attempt to get CC because he’s concerned about the dodgers reveues. No way – no way he’s going to want to add Manny’s salary and I can’t see the Sox paying the dodgers to trade Manny.

The other thing – the dodgers front office is way too dysfunctional to pull off a deal this complicated this quickly. The schism between the Ned Colletti faction and the Logan White faction is way too deep to pull of this kind of deal.

So I don’t buy the the dodgers angle.

If the Sox had to add Bowden to the deal that would change a lot. Then the deal is very different for them – they don’t have that much pitching in their system behind Bowden.

I don’t see them including Bowden. They’ll walk away.

Dunn to Tampa makes sense – but the huge issue for them is that they are already way too left handed. They really would have an imbalanced line up with Dunn.

Bay makes much more sense for Tampa. They might be reticent to do it but they could play upton in right and Crawford in center.

  276. Confucius

“Fright and fear do not win games.”

Really? Couldn’t Mussina being a little more frightened of Manny have resulted in one extra win for us?

  277. ANSKY

Splitting with LAA at a minimum this weekend needs to happen.

How that effects the standings of course is important. Angels, by getting Teixiera, have (IMO) made themselves favorites for the pennant. Getting Pudge, on the other hand, will help us deal with their pitching should we face them in Oct.

Let’s say we split the 4-gamer this weekend. Going into the playoffs we’ll know that they didn’t face Joba this time and that could be a decider in Oct.

Overtaking both Tampa and Boston becomes more important now. The Angels would be a favorite over the wild card anyways, plus they’d have home field advantage to boot. If we settle for the wild card, that’s what we’d face in the ALDS. This weekend’s series is all in our house, so it might be a little deceiving in terms of where we stand looking towards an ALDS with them. Joba could be a decider, especially if he could pitch 2 games, but 3 of the 5 potential games would be in LA.

We would need Joba, Pettitte & Moose to step up like they’re all capable of. Pettitte has often stepped a big game pitcher when the game is big. Moose has shown flashes of doing it again, but for a max of 6 innings at a shot. Joba showed us recently against Beckett at Fenway that he has a pair the size of coconuts.

Do they even use a 4th starting pitcher in a post-season series? In a best-of-five series I don’t feel so good about starting Posnon, Rasner or Washburn with the Angels leading a best-of-five series 2-1. That’s when you have to put Pettitte or Joba in. The post season can be won with 3 good starters. If there’s a 4th starter who’s only so-so the first 3 just have to step up.

If its a 4-man post-season rotation I’d feel better with Wang, Hughes or Kennedy than Ponson, Rasner or Washburn. If any of them were in the mix at that point it would be because they’d have already shown by then that they can perform as was expected of them out of spring training.

Better shot at beating the Angels in a 7-game ALCS if we don’t have that 4th starter. Right now we don’t have it, and I don’t think Washburn’s the answer. He may be better tha Ponson and Rasner but that’s not necessarily saying he’s the answer. A best of 7 leaves more room for error if we don’t have the 4th starter we need.

I’d like to see Wang back if he can get better and build up his arm strength & stamina again soon enough for October. If not either Kennedy or Hughes would need to come back by then. Again, if any of the 3 were there by then, it only would be because they’d been able to shown they’re worthy by late Sept.

  278. Jorge Tabata

How would Manny react if this deal falls apart?

Will he continue to dog it and be a distraction? or will he accept it and keep quiet and play hard if they tell him they will decline his option at the end of the year?

  279. Patrick â„¢

    From Rotoworld:

“According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to the prospects they’d receive in a Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida deal.

That was supposed to be the biggest remaining hurdle. If this is correct, then talks are anything but dead. ”

With Jason Bay the Sox might be making a good deal but we have to remember how much Manny has owned the Yankees over the years. Any deal that gets Manny out of the AL east is a good one as far as I’m concerned.

  280. TurnTwo

    “No, Phil, they don’t.”

  282. CB

One other thing on the rumors of Manny going to the dodgers.

The dodgers have already gotten burned on the Jones deal – he’s been awful for them.

I can’t see them wanting to acquire another older, high priced outfielder.

Manny’s only a rental to them – they won’t shell out the money to pay him long term.

They’ve been way to protective of their younger players to get rid of Kemp for a rental.

Another source familiar with the discussions, however, continued to express caution, indicating that the talks remain in a tenuous state.

Manny is most likely gone — up here in MA everyone seems to want him gone. Everyone is sick of this and the schilling thing this morning bascially said that the players don’t want a guy that will quit on them!

Updated 1:21 p.m.: Yankees unlikely to land Byrd

Barring a last-minute change, the Indians are unlikely to trade right-hander Paul Byrd before the 4 p.m. ET non-waiver deadline.

The Yankees, frustrated by their attempts to land Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, “kicked around” the idea of adding Byrd, but their interest appears minimal, according to major-league sources.

The Indians likely would not seek much in return from Byrd, who also has drawn mild interest from the Rockies.

Byrd, 5-10 with a 4.93 ERA, could be moved during the August trading period. He is unlikely to be claimed on waivers due to his $7.5 million salary.

I don’t understand why everyone is so averse to Paul Byrd. He’s only a VERY slightly worse pitcher than Washburn, but he’s still much better than Ponson. He falls into the same “crafty veteran with playoff experience” category, he’s only signed through this year, and the Indians would likely be reasonable in reaching a deal.

What I would do if I were Cash is come to a casual consensus with Cleveland on the return, then call Seattle and tell them this is their last chance to accept his offer or he will go forward with Cleveland. See if Seattle still wants the world in return when it’s do or die time. The Rockies basically laughed in their face earlier after hearing what they wanted for Wash. At this point they have to be starting to realize they’re not gonna do any better than what we’re offering.

    Blame game over Manny

    Posted by Jayson Stark

Yet another official with one of these three teams says the Manny-Bay deal is dead. In the aftermath, the teams involved seem unsure of what happened. The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren’t too happy with either of them.

  309. Bobby

  312. Dr. J

Colletti has a reputation for being very stingy with prospects and McCourt hates spending money. Now they are going to trade a promising young stud like Kemp for 2 months of Manny?

It’s not like they are a win-now team, their entirecore (Kemp/Ethier/Looney/Martin/Billingsly/Broxton/Krudoa/Kershaw etc.) is comprised of young players, so it makes no sense from that standpoint.

Manny will get the Bonds treatment in LA anyway, nobody will ever pitch to him with with the likes of Martin/Kent/Looney behind him. Those are nice players, but not in the same stratosphere as Manny.

Then again, the Marlins were the last team I would have expected to get involved in this, so anything is possible. Just doesn’t make much sense though from LA’s standpoint.

  313. Jon

Now Stark is saying the deal is dead

You’d think we’d learn by now that the Sox will never trade Manny. How many times has he been on the verge of being traded? It seems like every year he wants out and they “try” to trade him. Just goes to show, team chemistry is overrated.

  323. mel

Either way it’s a win-win for Yankee fans. If the man-child is traded to the NL, we don’t have to deal with him. If he stays, he’ll be a distraction to the team, even if it’s short-lived.

  324. The Fallen Phoenix

CB – It wouldn’t be Manny to the Dodgers, I don’t think. I think the Dodgers would replace the Pirates in the three-way, so the Marlins would still be getting Manny, and Hermida would probably be going to the Dodgers in exchange for Kemp+prospects.

I also agree that it’s a long-shot, but that’s what I interpreted Carrol’s earlier unfiltered blog post to be hinting at. It seems the Red Sox and Marlins don’t *need* the Pirates to get a deal done, while it looks like the Pirates are trying to leverage what they’re getting in the three-way vs. what they’d be getting from Tampa.

Tampa would supply the pitching the Pirates would want. The Red Sox and Marlins are apparently tipping the deal towards them in sheer volume of talent, regardless of position.

That the Red Sox have to deal with outmaneuvering Tampa Bay in addition to dumping Manny gives me confidence that additional pieces aside from Lowrie will be involved (and that’s huge, he’s their only in-house replacement for Lugo/Cora right now), which would make me feel better about a deal. And I think this three-way falling apart in favor of a Dodgers-Red Sox-Marlins three-way scares the crap out of me most long-term, since I’d (personally) take four or five years of Kemp over two guaranteed years plus additional near-market-price years of Bay.

Not to say that will happen; it seems if this deal is going to get done, it’ll get done in the configuration we’ve been reading about the last two days. It’s still scary to think about, though.

I actually think Britton is perfect— his role here will be what Hawkins was, the guy to eat up a couple of innings in blowouts and the guy to pitch games where we are trailing. Except Britton has proven to be much better than Hawkins. He throws strikes, so he is better than Bruney in this regard too.

  406. TurnTwo

kontos has been pretty hot and cold all year. he’s got decent stuff, but dont see him as much much that a fringy back of the rotation guy, maybe long man in the BP… very similar projection to what McCutcheon could give.

  407. The Fallen Phoenix

I’m going to guess that *if* the Manny/Bay/Hermida trade fell apart, it had to do with Pittsburgh wanting additional prospects (likely from Boston), Boston agreeing in exchange for less salary relief to the Marlins, and the Marlins walking away over the money.

It fits the narrative; in that case, the Pirates would have been happy with their haul (Marlins+Red Sox prospects), but would blame the Marlins for the deal falling apart because they wouldn’t take on the addtional cash. The Marlins, on the other hand, would blame the Pirates for altering the deal for additional prospects, and therefore causing them to get less cash from Boston with Manny.

Either that, or the Pirates wanted one of Florida’s untoucheables, or no-deal. I think that also fits the narrative, although it doesn’t really speak to the reports that the Pirates had liked their haul.

  408. 34hughes

why not trade abreu for either or hermida

  409. Aaron

  411. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

If the Reds trade Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox then they could go after Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, who is tearing up Triple A Oklahoma but is blocked at the big league level. The Rangers could also try to move outfielder Marlon Byrd and make room for Cruz. The Rangers are still talking to the Marlins about catcher Gerald Laird. The Reds are also interested.

Brandon, another possible speculation that Keppinger could be on the move if they don’t place Hairston as the RFer? Scott Hairston is their second best utility player. just keep hoping dude…

  424. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

This is typical Theo garbage. He always tries to pull off these insane multi-team deals where the Sox win w/o giving much up and before they get consummated one of the other teams in the deals realizes it’s getting rooked by him.

What he should have done is trade Manny to the Marlins and then see if a separate deal could materialize, but he has to try to fleece the Pirates in the deal. They were right to pull out if they did because they were not getting equal value for Bay/Grabow and it didn’t seem to make sense why they were even in it since the Marlins didn’t want to give up the stud young pitcher.

They’ll get stuck with Manny and Manny will hit for the stretch run and for his next contract.

Brandon, another possible speculation that Keppinger could be on the move if they don’t place Hairston as the RFer? Scott Hairston is their second best utility player. just keep hoping dude…

I’m hoping but Cashman has not even made a attempt to look at Keppinger which is weird because he is a hit w/ RISP waiting to happen and good for the PH role.

  433. The Fallen Phoenix

    G. Love – it looks like it was the Marlins, and not the Pirates, who walked out of the deal. Baseball Prospectus is reporting (reasoning?) in their round table that the Marlins wanted something in addition to Manny plus cash, and couldn’t get it from either the Pirates (understandable) or the Red Sox (slighly less so), while the Pirates loved the package of prospects and Hermida they were receiving.

I also read…somewhere that there are members of Boston’s FO who are willing to deal straight up with the Marlins and get back Hermida, but that Henry didn’t like it because it weakens Boston’s World Series aspirations this year.

  434. V

The Yanks should trade Abreu for Manny.

  435. Andrew

I can only imagine that ESPN is spinning this thing like crazy saying that in the end the Red Sox will be better off because Francona can heal the wounds blah blah blah…I am not in front of a TV due to being at work, but I can already hear this ringing through my ears.

I don’t think people will be as quick to believe it this time, though, considering how vocal Manny was in putting himself above the team and wanting no part of it, etc.

  436. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

I’m hoping but Cashman has not even made a attempt to look at Keppinger which is weird because he is a hit w/ RISP waiting to happen and good for the PH role.

    that was pretty funny.

  443. Coach Jay23

Manny deal or no deal, Boston still hasn’t addressed their glaring holes of their 7-8-9 hitters and unsteady middle relief. Beckett has returned to 2006 form and Buchholz has been a disappointment.
If the Manny deal is off, how is the damage done by him repaired at the snap of a finger ?

  445. S.o.S.27

    saucy,

  447. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

I don’t know why we let BOS, Manny and the media get us all riled up every year with “Trade Manny mania”. They were never going to deal him. We go through this every year with the same results – Manny stays in BOS. It’s ridiculous!

  448. Rishi

JIM(Baton Rouge): Is Paul Byrd going to get traded today?

Jonah Keri: (2:22 PM ET ) He’s a fringe pitcher at this point, Jim. He’d be a decent option at SP5 for the Yankees, but I wouldn’t expect the Indians to get much more for Byrd than the Yankees did for LaTroy Hawkins.

  449. Bobby

Forget about the Yankees for a second, there haven’t been any big deals today. Unless the Manny thing happens, and maybe Adam Dunn is traded, today was kind of a wash. All the really blockbuster deals happened already.

Steve Phillips has no idea what he’s talking about, because if he did, one would think, he would still be a GM somewhere.

Doris, enough about the trade you reported 3 days ago, no one cares if it was made up or not. And your commentary is useless…..

I’m not usually about slamming other people on a blog, but enough is enough….

  451. Patrick â„¢

Brandon, quoting someone’s average with RISP is somewhat useless in my opinion. I’m pretty sure that a player being “clutch” has been disproven. Most players career RISP numbers are very close to their overall career numbers. If a player has excelled with RISP in one season it is likely because of luck.

  452. Yankee Lover

Convinced Red Sox never really intended on trading Manny. Its all show, and they want to make him look bad and be able to say that nobody wanted him.
Manny is pretty weird and dopey, but he said something very interesting yesterday when he said look at what they did to Nomar and Pedro. True story

  453. S.o.S.27

    Stuart,
Now if only Presidential nominies would also keep their religion to themselves it would be a better world.

  454. The Fallen Phoenix

Depending on what the Rays give up, while I agree that Bay to Tampa would be terrible for the Yankees this year, I think it would be easier to swallow long-term than Bay to the Red Sox.

Reason being that Bay would almost assuredly be a rental (I cannot see the Rays extending him long-term), so his impact would be limited to this season and next, while simultaneously putting a dent in Tampa’s mountain of premium minor league talent longer-term.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, would have had a good chance of extending Bay, and he would have made a lot of sense for them long-term, since Manny is almost assuredly gone after next year, period. So the Red Sox are going to have to get creative this off-season if they don’t want to have an OF of Crisp/Ellsbury/Drew, and that would likely involve parting with some of *their* prospects.

  455. michelle(long time reader, Not so Seldom Poster) I Love It's Its

1:17pm: Nick Cafardo doesn’t buy the “dead” talk. However, the Pirates may have turned away from the Boston-Florida scenario for Bay. The Rays are still a possibility for him.

“Convinced Red Sox never really intended on trading Manny. Its all show, and they want to make him look bad and be able to say that nobody wanted him.”

If it was orchestrated, it was to make it clear to Manny that they honestly tried to trade him, but it was the other teams’ faults that they couldn’t get something done. They’d hope that appeases him until November. I think it’s a non-issue. Manny will be Manny (any way you define that) for the last two months, though the Sox may need to give him some guarantee that they aren’t going to pick up the team option.

Hopefully Cafardo is right and there’s a still a chance here.

    Thrillington-
If Boston trades Manny, that most definitely exposes Ortiz for the true player he is…the guy that got cut by Minnesota. He will have no protection in that lineup aside from maybe Lowell, not to mention he isn’t 100% to begin with. Ortiz is a garbage HITTER. I don’t even call him a baseball player. He only became a cult phenomenon after the 2004 ALCS. I think the Red Sox are in serious trouble if Manny gets dealt, which only makes me that much happier.
You think Moose will send Theo a ‘thank-you card’ if they trade Manny? How many HR’s does Manny have a against us this year, and how many are off Moose. I’m guessing at least 3.

  490. Fredo Corleone

“Manny is pretty weird and dopey, but he said something very interesting yesterday when he said look at what they did to Nomar and Pedro.”

You mean when they visciously exercised Pedro’s 2005 option months before they had to??? Or the malice they showed in offering only a 3 year deal for more money per season than the Mets ended up paying him??? Or when they insulted Nomar in 2004 by offering $60 million for 4 years (Nomar turned that down – he’s since made $33 million thru a series of 1 and 2 year contracts).

Not looking to defend the Red Sox here, but they treated those players perfectly fine and treated Ramirez better than both of them. He’s a petulent 12 year old in a 36 year old’s body. He’s been well paid. He’s been enabled (a big mistake by Boston)and he’s got no legitimate gripe. I hope the Yankees steer clear of him. He can hit. But he’s no good.

I think Cashman is willing to go to war with Ian Kennedy for ten starts over caving into the Mariners for Washburn (which could still get done, even after today ends), and I can’t say I blame him.

The Yankees just need to make it to October, right? Whoever ultimately pitches for the Yankees in the 4/5 holes, whether it’s Washburn, Rasner, Ponson, or Kennedy don’t matter then. Kennedy could certainly be an upgrade over Ponson for ten or more starts. There’s always the Hughes wild card, too; if he can come back in September, that’s three or four fewer spots you’d have to give to whoever you had in those 4/5 starts for August.

  499. Confucius

Have you looked @ Ortiz’s stats pre-2004? He was GARBAGE on Minnesota, which is why they cut him. He hit 31 in ‘03 and drove in 101. it wasn’t until 2004 that he started hitting 40+ home runs a season and wasn’t a household name until after the 2004 ALCS. Mikeyd: No one, and I mean, no one, heard anything about the Pudge/Farnsworth trade until it happened. I think the Nady/Marte deal (at least in that configuration) probably surprised a few people, too, especially since the Yankees had to outmaneuver several suitors who were in on both players.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Cashman has been exploring and working on deals all day, and that the media just has no idea that anything is going on. Many of these deals probably wouldn’t materialize, anyway, but if a deal in the next hour comes out of nowhere, I won’t be terribly surprised.

And there’s still that game of chicken with Seattle over Washburn, which can go all the way down to the deadline, I bet.

Finally, there’s also the possibility that Cashman is exploring and laying down the groundwork for waiver moves if he thinks there isn’t enough time to get a non-waiver deal done in the next hour.

Theo has this fettish for multi-team deals. He tries a multi-team deal every year and always is usually left at the alter. Same thing will happen in about an hour.

Breaking News on espn now means – we get to see gammons stutter for 5 minutes, while telling us a useless story to make phillips look worse than he already does and the he goes on the say i receieved a text message from someone close to manny….

    Insiders say what

No, you’re a knucklehead. Hamilton will crush you.

Don’t think anyone believes your lying, dude. I do believe most now believe this source is more or less useless though.

“Not that there’s much chance of a manny thing happening, but can’t teams get an extension if they’re very close to a deal?”

They can ask Selig for a little more time, and he’d grant it if a deal appeared to be close. But with the terms being rejected by the Pirates and Marlins and the Sox moving on to another team, nothing really seems close now.

  537. mike

yeah not really sure why what gammons just said was “breaking news”

  538. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

And that rules that Britton is getting another shot. Bruney seemed like he was still a little wild in AAA, so I’m happy to see him being given more time to work that stuff out. Call him up when he is ready and he will be a huge help to us. Rush him and it’s probably a repeat of 2007.

  539. Andrew

Britton is just a stop-gap until the organization decides that either Bruney or Melancon are ready for their call-up. He is the all-time Hall of Fame legend for riding the Scranton-to-New York shuttle, and this time will probably be no different. I just hope Melancon becomes the next call up before Bruney, no slight against Bruney, but I just want to see what Melancon can do in the bigs.

  540. Scott

If you think that Ortiz is going to just curl up and die as a hitter without Manny’s “protection,” you’re nuts. He’s not going to be pitched differently. The lineup around him is still strong. He’s not going to forget how to hit.

The comment about the Minnesota Ortiz being the real Ortiz is silly. In Minny they basically told him, “Don’t pull the ball so much. Don’t hit home runs. We want batting average from you.” Sounds stupid, right? That’s what they did. That’s why he wasn’t a power hitter there, while he was a great power hitter the instant he showed up in BOS.

I was highlighting his only decent year pre ‘04.

    ‘98- 86 games 9 HR’s 46 RBI’s and 72 K’s
    ‘99 only played 10 games
    ‘00 130 games 10 HR’s 63 RBI’s 81 K’s
    ‘01 89 games 18 HR’s 48 RBI’s
    ‘02 125 20 HR’s 75 RBI’s 87 K’s

“seriously, whats with the hating on Brandon?”

There’s a difference between hating and suggesting that these ‘insiders’ don’t exist. There are colors between black and white, even if the Internet has a tendency to make us believe otherwise.

Minor league players on the 40 man roster have limited number of options. Once a team moves a player back from the majors to the minors, a team uses up one of those options. When a player is “out of options” he must be cleared through waivers first (or designated for assignment DFA) before giving that player the option to return to minor league ball or trade or release him.

“If you think that Ortiz is going to just curl up and die as a hitter without Manny’s “protection,” you’re nuts. He’s not going to be pitched differently.”

If you don’t think teams will pitch Ortiz differently knowing Manny isn’t behind him, you are NUTS. I’m sure Abreu would be pitched the same if A-Rod wasn’t behind him. It was pick your poison with those 2 guys, and most teams picked Ortiz, which is why he saw so many good pitches. W/O manny, he will see a ton less strikes.

  553. TurnTwo

“would you guys be interested in Maddux if the padres put him on waivers…”

    no.

    E and sunny–

“When a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man Major League roster, he is on “optional assignment.” One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be “optioned out” three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.

When you hear that a player is “out of options,” that means he’s been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he’ll have to clear waivers (more on those below).”

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html

  556. Confucius

“He’s not going to be pitched differently.”

You’re nuts if you think this is the case.

A pitcher facing David Ortiz has a very different mentality with Manny Ramirez on deck than he has with JD Drew on deck. The mentality is ‘whatever you do, don’t give the guy on deck another baserunner.’ With Drew or Lowell you can get a little more crafty with Ortiz, assuming you aren’t just giving a pass with first base open. Pitchers are a lot more confident that they can get those two out.

Another topic i won’t dwell on too much, but he leaves Minny for Boston and transforms into a power hitting machine.

    Brandon: Manny to LA?

  561. raymagnetic â„¢

“He’d get a lot more IBB’s, and pitchers would be a lot more careful with him otherwise. He’s definitely not a terrible hitter, but Manny’s protection being taken away would severely impact his performance. No one else — not Lowell, not Bay, not Drew — would cause anything close to the kind of fear that Manny does.”

They may not cause fear in the hearts of pitchers, but Lowell, Bay, and Drew aren’t exactly Juan Pierre either. Teams aren’t going to automatically be walking Ortiz if Manny leaves them. I also don’t buy into the whole protection thing either. Wasn’t Bonds still a great hitter when he had no one hitting behind him his final few seasons in SF?

    “Ray-
Have you looked @ Ortiz’s stats pre-2004? He was GARBAGE on Minnesota, which is why they cut him. He hit 31 in ‘03 and drove in 101. it wasn’t until 2004 that he started hitting 40+ home runs a season and wasn’t a household name until after the 2004 ALCS. IMO, he had some ‘extra juice’, but i don’t want to get into that arguement, but it’s my opinion to have. What did the guy do pre 2004 that warrants him to be this “great DH”?”

Who cares about what he did prior to 2003? If you really think that by simply having Manny hitting behind him made Ortiz a better player then I can’t argue with you. It’s pointless. Also in 2002, at the age of 26 ortiz hit 20 HR’s and had 75 RBI in 125 games. Those are good numbers. Could it be that he perhaps got BETTER as a hitter as he got older? That does happen to A LOT of players.

do you think he cares? He dropped the word, on the entire ‘manny problem’, predicting he would sit out last friday’s game (vs yankees), before it was news. Hours later, manny is scratched from the lineup. The next day, the debacle is uncovered in the Boston Globe.

sounds like inside information, to me.

    Ray-
point taken. arguing about protection is somewhat pointless being that you can’t really statistically measure that. And players do become better HITTERS all around, but not many start crackin 40 HR’s for the first time 6 to 7 years in the bigs. If he was such a great hitter, how didn’t Minnesota see that for 6 years? If you are telling me they consistently told him not to swing at inside pitches, i’m sorry i can’t believe that. He comes to Boston and the first year hits 31, after never cracking 20 for his first 6 years. THAN, next season, he hits 41, 47, and 54 respectively for the next 3 years. Oh, that happens a lot in baseball, mostly in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I wonder why?……

That’s one of the 3 teams. I Wouldn’t be surprised. Rebecca I can’t recieve legit info today because it’s through GM now and my contact only has to do w/ Manny (his feeling, his status, what he wants and where he wants to go).
