Jason Bay to Tampa, Wilson next?

Peter Abraham
July
31

SS Reid Brignac and RHP Jeff Niemann to the Pirates, so says MLB.com. Now do the Pirates deal Jack Wilson to the Dodgers?

Now maybe Manny stays put.

We’ll have Pudge Rodriguez audio after his press conference today.

UPDATE, 4:36 p.m.: Obviously this report from MLB.com was wrong.

  1. Kill-Schill(ing)

Damn it. This is the guy I wanted for the Yankees, not Nady.

  2. Del From Hieroglyphics

    interesting, very interesting.

  3. bphill

I’m glad he went to the Rays and not the Sox. The Sox are getting murdered this trade deadline.

  4. fred from jersey

where is bay going to play in tampa?

  5. Del From Hieroglyphics

wait a minute, I thought Mayy was traded to the Packers for Favre straight up?

  6. al arodien

manny being manny ! not being traded! every year the sema bull ****

  7. bill the baker

too bad about manny, but with a guy like that he’ll probably forget about all this if someone doesn’t remind him tomorrow.

  8. Chief

    wow

  9. Del From Hieroglyphics

    Manny*

  10. frits

what a &#^*@ deal. if the priates are giving players away, we should have asked for damaso marte and xavier nady!

    oh…wait…

  11. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Not me. Give me Nady over the immensely overrated Jason Bay anyday.

Seriously. I challenge any one of you to name me 5 position players in the league more overrated than Bay.

  12. Chief

bay is going to play RF

  13. Gitmo

How bout Manny to Milwaukee for Gagne? It worked for them last trade deadline. :)

  14. Dan

I rather have Nady over Bay. Bay is not a great hitter and very inconsistant but it is a good deal for the Rays.

  15. Matt-LI

September games are going to be extremely interesting…

  16. Matt-LI

  17. Guy Incognito

You scooped The Worldwide Leader with this one, Pete.

Jason Bay is below the Mendoza line against LHP.

  18. #9

Manny staying in Boston? What a fun clubhouse they’re going to have!

  19. Fredo Corleone

“Seriously. I challenge any one of you to name me 5 position players in the league more overrated than Bay.”

I’ll give you one. Xavier Nady

“Not me. Give me Nady over the immensely overrated Jason Bay anyday.

Jason Bay is far, far superior to Xavier Nady.

  21. Rishi

no mention of it on ESPN yet

  22. CUYanks

BBB: I’d say Bay is probably underrated.

Ken Griffey, Curtis Granderson, B.J. Upton, Derrek Lee, Adrian Beltre to start…

  23. fuhgoobagaz

Wait, so Tampa Bay Rays get Bay?!? Does that make him Ray Bay?

  24. Al from BK

Same thing different year. Of course Manny is staying trading him would have been giving up and we all know Theo is no quitter.

  25. Bronx Jeers

Well this is shaping up to be a fine day. Instead of Manny going to Miami to torment the Mets, it turns out no he’ll still be tormenting us. Now the Rays are getting better?

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    I’d rather have Nady.

    Cooler name.

  27. CUYanks

Oh, add Torii Hunter to that overrated list too.

  28. pat

This Manny stuff is Theo’s version of the Boy Who Cried Wolf every year. Live and learn. As an informed blogger once said, you hear what they want you to hear.

The audio of Manny at 4:01 will be more entertaining than anything Pudge has to say.

  29. Patrick â„¢

“Ken Griffey, Curtis Granderson, B.J. Upton, Derrek Lee, Adrian Beltre to start…”

Granderson and Lee are not overrated.

  30. CB

    “who get the better deal?
    yankees for Nady?

    or

    rays for Bay?”

We have to wait and see who the other prospects in the Bay deal are.

No way it’s only Niemann and Brignac.

That said – if these rumors are true – Pittsburgh is clearly interested in maintaining parity in the AL East.

Both deal were comparably bad for Pittsburgh.

On the whole, I’d say the yankees got the better deal as they got both Nady and Bay.

But Andrew Friedman did very, very well for himself in this trade.

It’s a major move for a franchise that holds its prospects very tightly and has never had to improve itself at the trade deadline.

To get Bay without giving up Hellickson or Davis is a very impressive accomplishment for Tampa.

But again – we have to see the whole trade. That’s just an initial reaction assuming Niemann and Brignac are the main pieces.

One other caveat to this is whether Pittsburgh has another deal on the table trading Jack Wilson. Brignac is clearly going to get the shot to be the SS of the future.

He’s not having a very good season however and I’d think they’d give him more time at AAA. I think they’d trade Wilson in the winter.

  31. Olan

ah….that mean manny is staying in boston… can yankee help to sent him out? lol

  32. voiii

How is Jason Bay far better than X-man?

Check his stats with RISP b4 you you make that call. The man chokes under pressure. He has never been in a penant race and has never had to perform under pressure…If his numbers with RISP indicate anything, it’s that he will fold in a pennant race…

  33. Redding

    Bay is so overrated.

    - One of the worst fielders in baseball… even worse than Matsui.

    - .210 average vs. lefties the last 2 seasons

    - hit .247 last year

    - hitting .216 with RISP last year and .260 last year. Even in his best statistical year in 2006, he hit .242 with RISP.

    - had 140+ strikeouts each of the last 3 years against lousy NL central pitching.

Talk about a cosmetic player… typical guy who hits HRs on a bad team. Will he help the Rays? Absolutely, he will blend in there and contribute. But to think this is what put the Rays over the top is ludicrous.

Nady/Marte would have been much better for the Rays. They would have gotten a great bottom of the order hitter who kills lefties, good fielder, playoff experience (with SD) and Marte owns the Yankees and Red Sox and would have been their SU man and probably replaced Percivil.

  34. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

I didn’t say Nady was better than Bay, but nobody hypes him as if he is. Nady is not overrated, everyone with some semblance of a brain understands that he is having a career year.

I live in PA so I actually know a couple Pirate fans and I never noticed how overrated Bay was until they told me to watch for it. He certainly can’t be underrated cause his defense is awful and that is never mentioned. He also is not very good under pressure.

  35. CB

“where is bay going to play in tampa?”

Upton to right field, crawford to center, bay to left.

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Still a half hour to go.

  37. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

    Pete,

Even if it doesn’t happen in the 25 minutes, please post that Wilson Betemit has just been traded. The mere thrill of seeing that in print is good enough for me.

I’ll forgive you later if it’s a goof.

  38. Wolf In Pinstripes

“Manny staying in Boston? What a fun clubhouse they’re going to have!”

Exactly. I doubt it’s going to make the Sox crumble per se as some would suggest, but it’s going to be a drag at this point.

Manny has bad-mouthed the organization with the expectations that he would be dealt. Now he’s got to walk back in the room he thought he was going to leave behind. He’s put himself above the team with the comments he made about the Sox not deserving him, and that can’t possibly sit well with his teammates. It’s totally unrealistic to think they’re all just going to hug and make up and act like nothing happened. And is Manny going to give any extra effort on the field now that he didn’t get the trade he wanted? History would say no.

It will be an interesting scenario to follow for sure.

  39. cwebzzz

Cant wait to see our lineup tonight.. going too be nasty..

Okk guys its our last year at this stadium.. The ghosts are going to come out and get this team on a roll.. we really cant miss the playoffs this year.. We need A-rod to get on a roll and carry us.. I would be extremely upset if this year especially this year if we miss october baseball. It starts tonight and we need to win series after series.

    Jeez.

  41. DV

Wilson Betemit has just been traded

  42. ANSKY

Jason Bay will be below the Mendoza line against Joba too. I have no problem with him going to Tampa.

I wish Manny would just leave Boston. But on the other hand, they’re stuck with a guy who they all know is willing quit on them if it doesn’t serve his own interest.

Also, as log as they have Manny, Youkilis, Papelbon, Beckett, Schilling or Pedroia, they & their fans base don’t have a leg to stand on for every predictable BS thing they ever say about NY.

Even if they ever did let all those guys go, the stuff they say is still just BS. They just sound like bigger idiots pontificating it when they have those guys on their team.

  43. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Lee is slightly overrated (but I actually think Aramis is more overrated), Granderson is not overrated at all, and Beltre isn’t overrated anymore. Everyone acknowledges that he is not that great now.

and Bay isn’t just a worse fielder than Matsui, he’s as bad or worse than a guy like Ibanez. Ibanez > Bay.

  44. DV

    ( that was for G. Love )

  45. Peter Rabbit

DV— where? If so… I TOLD YOU SO!

manny will prob play harder against yankee so we’ll sign him during off season ……

  49. Fredo Corleone

“I live in PA so I actually know a couple Pirate fans and I never noticed how overrated Bay was until they told me to watch for it.”

Sounds a little like the Phillies fans and their thoughts on Bobby Abreu. Couldn’t get him out of there soon enough. They didn’t even mind getting nothing for him. He’s been pretty good here though.

Bay is a .285, 30/100 with excellent OBP. He’s not terribly expensive either. He’s a good player.

  50. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

    Thanks DV.

My heart just skipped a beat!

  51. Patrick â„¢

“How is Jason Bay far better than X-man? ”

Go look at their career stats.

    Bay career OPS+: 130
    Nady career OPS+: 108

And don’t give me that nonsense about hitting with RISP. Look at Bay’s career stats with RISP, they are right in line with his overall career numbers.

Anyone that says Nady is better than Bay doesn’t know what they are talking about.

  52. Fleas - give me the ball Spike

    yes I am stressed.

seems everyone is working the phones for one reason or another today.

  53. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Wilson Betemit has just been traded”

lol damn you, I actually believed this for a second!

  54. Del From Hieroglyphics

    jose reyes is pretty overrated.

  55. fred from jersey

BREAKING: Manny just pulled his hamstring repacking his locker. 60 day DL

  56. CUYanks

    Patrick,
You are right, Lee and Granderson are definitely debatable.

Granderson I feel is overrated because of his speed and the quirky 20-20-20-20 thing last year he did. He is becoming less overrated as time goes on (the hype has worn down a little). He’s an outfielder with 20 hr power (not that special)
Lee I feel is overrated especially this year because of his torrid start. Ever since he has been pretty mediocre, but I consistently hear commentators referring to him like he’s a big-time slugger. His power is way down and he’s a career .280 ish hitter.

Granted, both are very good players, and perhaps hardly even overrated, but considering how underrated Bay seems to be, they definitely are more overrated than him.

  57. Fleas - give me the ball Spike

Kevin Long and Bobby Meacham for Brett Farve. Done. Press conference in 20 minutes.

    stay tuned.

  58. saucY

you know what really ruined player evaluation these days?

    fantasy sports.

  59. Today's Burning Question

What has Boston done to shore up weak spots other than create further clubhouse havoc with Manny still around ?

  60. CUYanks

    “Ibanez > Bay”

Just not true. Among other stats, look at OPS.
    Bay career OPS: .891
    Ibanez career OPS: .815

  61. NongEyeJon

X Nady has played in NY before and proven he can handle the pressue….Bay is awful with RISP….in PITTSBURGH.

  62. Chris NY

Farve would have one helluva fastball. Not sure about his command though.

  63. NongEyeJon

I think the Sox will get Manny to be calm for 2 months…and he’ll go on a tear. He’ll ruin his free-agency value if he dogs it.

  64. Chris NY

    *Favre

  65. CUYanks

“you know what really ruined player evaluation these days?

    fantasy sports.”

How so? It allows players on lesser known teams to be recognized. No one would even know about Bay or probably a Carl Crawford without them.

The two things I’ll give you is the Wins and SB’s. Way overvalued in fantasy vs. real world.

  66. Tank

Trade Ponson and Sexon to Seattle for Washburn

  67. Syracuse Gary

bay to rays not a done deal

  68. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Sounds a little like the Phillies fans and their thoughts on Bobby Abreu. Couldn’t get him out of there soon enough. They didn’t even mind getting nothing for him. He’s been pretty good here though.”

Only difference is, Abreu hits with RISP. And even with his fear of walls, fields his position better than Bay does. Also, Abreu was going from a situation where he had to be The Man to one where he was just one of the guys. That won’t be the case in Tampa – this is the biggest move they’ve ever made an people will be looking for Bay to be The Man.

Furthermore, Phillies fans simply aren’t rational people. Not as a whole, anyway, so I wouldn’t go by their reactions to evaluate anything. They’re never satisfied, theyre the same group of people who complain about Brian Westbrook, for crying out loud! They also can’t get Pat Burrell out of there soon enough, and he’s a pretty good player, wouldn’t you say? Certainly better than Jason Bay…

  69. Jon W.

Did Bay really get traded to the Rays? Why has nobody else mentioned this as done? Premature, perhaps?

  70. mike

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo says there is no done deal – the Rays might not make Brignac available.

  71. Will

Peter, how solid is that info on Bay to the Rays? I don’t see it reported anywhere else….I guess that screws the Sox.

  72. PAT M

Yanks did very well with their trades…..It’ll be evident come October

  73. Andrew

Canadian baseball players are all overrated.

  74. Bronx Jeers

“In an apparent 11th hour attempt to beef up their offensive threat, The Baghdad Babus threw their hat in the ring and made an offer to to try and land embattled Boston slugger Manny Ramirez. The Babus GM, Hussein Olamadama stated ” We like his propensity for launching bombs and missiles over the great green walls of America.” Olamadama also stated that Ramirez had “interesting hair” and bore a “remarkable resemblance” to Iraqi folk hero and notorious shoe bomber Richard Reid. When questioned what the Babus had to offer in exchange for Ramirez,Olamadama slyly replied “More virgins than you can shake a stick at.”

  75. Rubin

The Bay trade has been heavily denied by both teams. I dont think its true.

I think a Manny trade can still happen. We wont hear anything about it because the commisioners office has to get the paperwork for a trade that involves a player with a no trade clause.

  76. Fredo Corleone

“Abreu was going from a situation where he had to be The Man to one where he was just one of the guys. That won’t be the case in Tampa – this is the biggest move they’ve ever made an people will be looking for Bay to be The Man.”

Wrong on several levels. Abreu was NOT the man in Phillie. Didn’t want to be and never was. That was the problem. The “men” for Philly were Utley, Rollins and Howard. Philies were, for whatever reason, a much better team without him (49-55 with him in ‘06/ 36-22 after he was gone)

Bay has had to be the man in Pittsburgh, and generally held up his end. He’s sharing it with guys like Longoria, Crawford, Upton. They’ll expect a lot of him, but he’s been in that spot before and succeeded.

  77. Johnny Cortez

Way to go along with the unsubstantiated rumors Pete!

Gee Pete, this sounds euphemistic to me for “Called this one wrong so I have to cover my butt!”

No matter how much you or any of the other Ponson haters on this forum try to rationalize it, unless Washburn is part of a trade in the next several minutes, you all got it wrong.

This by the way is of little moment only because the deals are ultimately made by the Yankees and not the forum posters.

If we get Washburn and Ponson goes away in the next several minutes, I am going to be here to say I really got it wrong. Otherwise there is not a question that I (and other objective posters on this forum without a Ponson axe to grind) were able to be lucid enough to interpret reality.

    So there!

    :)

  79. Web

Time’s up. Looks like Manny stays.

  80. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Wrong on several levels. Abreu was NOT the man in Phillie. Didn’t want to be and never was. That was the problem. The “men” for Philly were Utley, Rollins and Howard.”

sorry, but no. Utley had only played one full season as a starter when Abreu left Philly, and Howard hadn’t even played one full season. Abreu had been there since ‘99, so by what possible logic were there higher expectations on Howard & Utley during Abreu’s tenure in Philly?

and Jimmy Rollins was never seen as a bigger/better player than Abreu prior to the 2007 hype, by which point Abreu was not a Phillie. They would get aggravated with Rollins too, but only cause he was a slow starter, K’d too much and didn’t get on base enough, not because they expected him to be the best player on the team.

If anyone was ever expected to be The Man over Bobby, it was Thome. Maaaybe you could argue on Burrell too. But Howard, Utley and Rollins? That is some serious serious revisionist history.

  81. Yankeefanfoev13

I agree w/ who said Canadians are overrated!!!!

    Stupid Canadians lol.

I swear the Bucs are like the A’s except they give away hitting talent instead of pitching.

Theo doesnt have gonads to make the deal. haha
