Game 110: Angels at Yankees

Peter Abraham
August
2

YANKEES (59-50)
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RH
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Betemit 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Mussina RHP

Mike Mussina (13-7, 3.56) vs. the Los Angeles hitters.

Jered Weaver (9-8, 4.11) vs. the New York hitters.

Notes: Thanks to Brian Heyman for calling in the lineup. … Cano is out with a sore left hand that he has had since last Sunday. He is 3 for 26 with one scored and no RBI over the last six games. His batting average has gone from .270 to .260…. The Yankees have lost two straight and five of their last six. They are now 5.5 games out of first and in third place in the wild card, 2.5 games out. … The Angels have won 25 of the last 40 games between the teams.

It’s Old Timers’ Day, so get there early if you have tickets. Yogi, Whitey, Reggie and all the rest will be on the hand for the last reunion at the Stadium. Willie Randolph has made an appearance as well.

CHECKING IN ON SOME OF THE NEW GUYS: Richie Sexson is 5 for 15 with the Yankees but hasn’t had an extra-base hit since July 8, his last game with Seattle. Did you know his name is Richmond Lockwood Sexson? … Pudge Rodriguez is 1 for 6 with two strikeouts and two GIDPs. … Damaso Marte’s line is 3.1 4 2 2 1 6 over four games. … Xavier Nady is 6 of 18 with four extra-base hits and four RBI.

OUT IN THE STREET: As for me, I’ll be at Gillette Stadium for tonight’s Bruce Spingsteen and the E Street Band concert. Big 30-person tailagate planned before the show. So this will be the extent of the blogging for the day.

Enjoy the game.

  1. Cody

I’m hearing Aaron Small is there – what is wrong with the Yankees? Haha.

Maybe Clemens will announce he’s coming back.

  2. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Cody are you jealous? You wish your team did this.

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Well, at least X is playing today.

  4. Terri Francona

    Pete’s gone. Trolling Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Bob(The Original)

Offense is going so well we’re going with a 6 man lineup today.

  6. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Its apparently a Yankees fan, Jennifer.

I don’t know when people don’t know you’re a Yankee fan by your posts here, then maybe you shouldn’t link to your blog with your name. It doesn’t exactly bode well for writing on it, lol.

  7. BillyMartinLives

Sorry Lohud, but Bruce SpringBean stinks. He sold out the Cops without educating himself. He did it to help his music career. He sang that awful song 50 shots or whatever it was. Now it appears he has issues with the country. Hell, we all know this country is a mess, but he and Billy Baldwin should move if it’s that bad.

  8. Cody

“Cody are you jealous? You wish your team did this.”

I don’t know, I think the Yankees *do* have this event.

  9. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

I would have flip flopped Nady and Giambi in the lineup.

  10. Bob(The Original)

I would have flip flopped Nady and Giambi in the lineup.

I would have put the ballboy at second and a clubhouse attendant in CF.

3 automatic outs in a row each time through the order today. This should be another fun one to watch.

  11. Yankeefanfoev13

    NOT BETIMET, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  12. Mattingly's Bat

    Hughes

There are kids on here and parents who would prefer not to answer questions.

    Keep it clean.

  13. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

UGHH DIRECT TV!! it’s raining in South Florida = “Searching for Signal”

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Joe, you gotta get cable!

  15. Say it ain't so

Pete you have a chance to be at OT Day today and you deny the chance? Wow. Not cool. I would’ve taken your seat in a heartbeat.

  16. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Hmm, gonna be one of *those* days around here, I see.

  17. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

So satellite TV really does get its signal disrupted by the rain?

  18. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

Joe, I had that 30mins ago but since the rain cleared away, i’m good to go. no worry, you will get signals soon.

  19. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

So satellite TV really does get its signal disrupted by the rain?

    sad but true.

  20. Nick in SF but now in Ocean City, MD

    answer from previous thread:

Just on vacation in Ocean City. I’ve been here for a month, er, a week I guess. Just feels like a month. I leave this afteroon, hopefully I can get the game on the radio (if there is a game) on the way to Baltimore.

By late Sunday night I’ll be back home and this blog can start to get back to normal! Well, pending the final solution to the Ponson question, that is…

  21. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

had cable, last year it was announced that the baseball package would only be on Direct TV so we got it installed that day!! within the week MLB announced that it would be on cable too

  22. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Oh. I remember that. I would have gone without EI rather than switch. We had it once before and never again. No reliable service always looking for a signal, and we couldnt get local channels on it.

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I am impressed they’e getting this in, but you know they would.

  24. pat

The one time I want to hear Sterling and Kay and I lose sound!

  25. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

I’m glad that Willie Randolph decided to go. I can’t see OTD. Major bummer!

  26. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

    MICKEY KLUTTS!!

  27. Bob(The Original)

Wish I could watch it. :(

  28. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

(service came back for now obviously lol)

  29. kill.schill(ing)

My god, can the Yankees not enjoy a single stretch of games where everyone stays healthy and is able to play?

I know Cano has struggled recently but he still begets far more confidence than Betemit, to say nothing of Cano’s superior defense.

Oy. This season is really killing me, each day eating away at my optimism and faith.

The Yankees have become an aging, mediocre lineup and I can’t see that changing between now and season’s end.

Worse, I don’t know how they improve it for the future. The two best hitting prospects, Jesus and A-Jax, are years away from contributing to the major league roster.

The Red Sux meanwhile have four very good players under 30 Pedroia, Ellsbury, Youklis, and Bay. And well, I needn’t cite the comparative age of the Rays’ roster.

  30. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

I can’t watch it either *sigh*

  31. JT

is pete serious? not there when a) its old timers day and b) the yanks season could be hanging in the balance?

    springsteen is garbage

  32. Bob(The Original)

I really am concerned about next season. Gonna be a lot of turnover in the lineup, but where are the new guys coming from? Plus Jeter, Damon, Posada, and Matsui will be another year older.

  33. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Funny I wanted to get this Old Timer’s Day on tape but didn’t have a blank tape so wanted to see if I could find a tape to put it on. (I don’t mark the boxes very well.) Don’t you think that the first tape I put in was of the last Yankee parade. :( Bobby Murcer was doing the commentary.

Anyway, I noticed that YES is doing the repeat tonight so I’ll buy a tape between now and then and tape tonight’s rendition.

Watching Tino really brings back memories. I guess I’m happy to be watching it. Well, bittersweet because I still have the taste of last night’s loss in my mouth.

What in hell has become of our Yankees?

To be fair, we are without CM, Sui and Jorge, Bruney thankfully is finally back, but some other relievers are still hurt. If you want to see the list of injuries check this out. http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....p?c_id=nyy

So I guess the fact that we are still in there swinging (at what sometimes I don’t know…) is a credit to the Yanks.

Hot damn there are a ton of former Yankees. Geeze the announcements alone will take the entire afternoon.

  34. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

hm… we must’ve reversed that trade – No Clemens today but we have Homer Bush, Greame Lloyd, and David Wells

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    can Homer Bush still play?

  36. Bob(The Original)

Can David Wells still pitch? lol

  37. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“Anyway, I noticed that YES is doing the repeat tonight so I’ll buy a tape between now and then and tape tonight’s rendition.”

Please tell me that you don’t still own a VCR.

  38. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

If any of you guys want me to make you a tape of Oldtimer’s Day, give me your email addresses. I will be taping it when it repeats tonight. If you’re willing to reimburse me for tape and postage, I’ll be happy to make copies for you. (I’m not trying to be cheap. You might remember that I was someone with one of those classic builder stories where my life savings were siphoned by an unscrupulous builder. Well I’m waiting for the results of arbitration. But I’m still pretty broke in the meantime!)

  39. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Can Griffey still play?

  40. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I feel bad for Tony Fernandez, Derek Jeter stole his job! =P

  41. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Laura – :)

I have the VCR. I just didn’t want to tape over the Yankee parade! What I don’t have is a blank tape. I guess I should buy a few while I’m at it!)

  42. pat

Think Aaron Small could catch lightening in a bottle again?

  43. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

You’re pretty big when they name a surgery after you!

  44. kill.schill(ing)

Trisha, were I a man who didn’t respect the copyright law, considering your financial straits, I might actually recommend
taping it and selling it on E-bay or Craig’s List anonymously.

But then again, I would never encourage another person to break the law.

  45. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    BUCKY F’IN DENT!! :D

  46. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

kill.schill – Too much energy! While I am an attorney obviously I don’t know a lot about copyright law. So please don’t tell me if I am doing something wrong by offering copies to my Yankee fan bretheren…

  47. kil22

    Hmm.

  48. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    Should have dealt Bet :(

My god Keppinger, Loretta would have been something. WTF is Aaron Small doing at Old Timers game ?

  49. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

Let me know who gets the biggest round of applause…other than Yogi, of course!

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Stick! :)

  51. Blargh

Nick: Hear about Livan getting DFA’d?

  52. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I love these oldtimers and great names from the past, etc., but if there was someone who would really bring my mood up, it would be

    AARON BLEEPIN BOONE!!!

  53. kil22

“So I guess the fact that we are still in there swinging (at what sometimes I don’t know…) is a credit to the Yanks.”

Only to a yankee apologist. The Yankees still have a lineup most teams can only dream about. Still have the supposed best player in the game. Have a payroll 50 million bigger than any other team, 100 million more than most.

I guess poor, poor Yankees sounds better than underperforming, or simply bad, but whatever lies can get you through the season I guess, huh?

  54. djsunyc

jimmy francis scott key…underrated BIG component to the yankee resurgence…

  55. pat

    I loved Jimmy Key!!!

  56. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

Brandon, I would have loved to have traded Betemit, but he has zero value on the market. Who would want him?

  57. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Was Aaron invited?

  58. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I have a baseball signed by Sojo. But I got it when he managed the Yankees AA team when they were in Connecticut.

    :)

  59. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I love me some Luis Sojo!

  60. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Jennifer, I think he’s still playing or something and probably is in a game somewhere today. Otherwise I cannot imagine that he wouldn’t be here.

  61. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

    Was Aaron invited?

he’s currently playing for the Nationals right now.

  62. pat

    Jennifer

He was playing for the Nationals last I heard.

  63. 86w183

Whitey should get the loudest cheer. He’s the greatest pitcherin Yankees history!

  64. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

When my Cubs/White Sox co-workers give me grief about how poorly the Yankees are playing, the first thing they throw in my face is the payroll. “How can a 210mil team be so bad?” I’m tired of people talking about the payroll. These guys were signed to long term deals based on prior results. The fact that they aren’t living up to that salary is the issue; not the money itself.

  65. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Oh ooops, I didn’t realize he was still playing. My bad. :)

  66. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Laura, just mention “unexpected injuries to a lot of players.” That’ll shut em up only because they probably won’t care enough to ask you to enumerate.

  67. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

so what we’re saying is current major leaguers cannot play in the old timers day.. got it.

Can someone from old timers day be picked up to play after the game? A good showing from Leiter or Wells and they have to be considered. Big names to get through today though.

  68. Bob(The Original)

Wow, last year on this day we had scored 629 runs.

    This year 516.

  69. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Does anyone see any current Yankees watching?

  70. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Can the Yanks activate Rickey?

  71. Cody

What is everyone’s fascination with Bruce Springsteen?

  72. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    JoeT: Amen!!

I think Aaron Small and Homer Bush probably got something left :-P

  73. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

hahas, Tim Raines patting Jeter’s head.

  74. pat

If Willie Randolph is there, he’ll get a really loud cheer.

  75. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Cody, you’re not from Jersey, are you?

  76. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

    “Can the Yanks activate Rickey?”

He’d be in favor of it, although it will delay his HOF entrance next year.

  77. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Activate JEFF NELSON!!

  78. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Here comes the Yankees biggest mistake giveaway, Nellie. I blame the demise of the Yankees on Torre’s grudge against Nellie for talking to the press. Things were never the same.

  79. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

Last I saw Tim Raines, he had put on at least 50lbs.

  80. Cody

    Rebecca — no, I’m not.

  81. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Cody: Then you don’t understand. :-P

  82. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I often wonder what the rhyme and reason is to the way they announce these guys.

  83. Cody

trisha — the people you don’t remember are on the third base line and the fan favorites and best players are on the first base line. That’s just how it goes. They throw a few no-names on the first base line, but not many. The guys like Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez, and Yogi Berra come last.

  84. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Cody – makes sense to me.

    :)

  85. pat

    Saving the HOFers for last?

  86. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Paulie!

  87. mark

will getting rid of the jinx Giambi help us win next year?

  88. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Can you imagine when they do this for Jeter?

  89. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    TINO !

  90. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Just saw JOBA!!

  91. eric in queens

this is a travesty without Bernie.

  92. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Its great that George has canned so many of these guys, and they still come back.

  93. pat

20 years from now, who will be the last 5 announced?

  94. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

roll call for the old timers game?? lol

  95. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    WILLIE!!

  96. djsunyc

    WILLIE!!!!!!!!

  97. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    There is willie!!

  98. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

    WILLIEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

    BRING HIM HOME!!

  99. Someone Else

    WILLIE!!!

  100. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Bernie was asked he declined!! Was Cash supposed to drag him here?

  101. pat

Willie with the biggest ovation so far.

  102. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    WILLIE !

  103. Coach Jay23

Maybe Willie can stay and coach 3rd base..lol

  104. Jorge Tabata

    What an ovation for Willie.

  105. vin

    man, Boggs’ hair looks great!

  106. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Willie more than deserves it.

  107. Chris

20 Years from now the final 5 wil be:

    Mattingly, O’Neil, A-Rod, Rivera, Jeter

  108. Cody

    Bernie needed to be here.

  109. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    Procede works

  110. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Bernie didn’t want to be here.

  111. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

Great ovation for Willie…. but I think Paul got a louder cheer.

Three in a row there it was almost the playoffs – Paul, Tino, and Willie

  112. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

    Procede works

lol. someone been watching too much of that commerical.

  113. pat

Fun to see all the young players all piled up in the corner of the dugout by the tunnel entrance watching.

  114. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

I love that Yogi is always last…. it’s great

  115. Back Bench

If this doesn’t get the current Yankee line up fired up, some one needs to call the EMTs.

  116. Cody

Girardi and his son look identical.

  117. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    YOGI!

    Greatest living Yankee? Yes/No?

  118. mark

glad that willie got that standing ovation. eat it, mets fans

  119. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    YOGI!!! :D

  120. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

look at the wheels on Yogi! Over 80 years old and he moves better then half of the guys in their 50’s

  121. Someone Else

    “YOGI!

    Greatest living Yankee? Yes/No?”

    Without a doubt.

  122. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Yogi looks so cute!!

  123. 86w183

20 years from now the final five will be”

Matingly, Joba, A-Rod, Jeter and Melky

    (just kidding’ insert Mariano there)

  124. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

Vic Power should have been the first black and Puerto Rican Yankee.

  125. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

billy’s wife looks young for her age.

  126. Someone Else

“20 years from now the final five will be”

Matingly, Joba, A-Rod, Jeter and Melky

    (just kidding’ insert Mariano there)”

Nah, Joba’ll still be pitching ;-)

  127. V

Glad Ponson showed he’s a good pitcher last night. We don’t need Washburn.

  128. Say it ain't so

I’m sorry but they really couldn’t get some of the players to escort the widows onto the field?

  129. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Billy married her when she was 10?

  130. The Real Original V

“Glad Ponson showed he’s a good pitcher last night. We don’t need Washburn.”

Is this really necessary, d00d? Wait until after Old Timer’s is over, at least, please.

  131. fred from jersey

“Glad Ponson showed he’s a good pitcher last night. We don’t need Washburn.”

  132. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Someone Else: We can only hope!

  133. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

It’s tough to need the ghosts and the Stadium to continue to give those guys the boost they need!

  134. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Cora likes Yogi, she made a bee line for him :)

  135. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I wish they’d play New York New York right now!

  136. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Well not right now.

    :(

  137. Bob(The Original)

This really blows that I can’t watch this.

  138. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I offered to make a tape. If you don’t want one that’s on you.

  139. fred from jersey

dave winfield coulnt even wear his yankees cap at the allstar game. why does he bother to come back here anymore.

  140. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

I’m so glad Willie came back

  141. Someone Else

Unrelated, but BaseballProspectus has a short interview with Chili Davis about the 1999 game vs. Pedro, where he absolutely dominated. Chili had the only Yankees’ hit of the game:

“Ben Lindbergh: I wanted to mention that my favorite memory of watching you play was in September of ’99, September 10, when Pedro Martinez pitched in that game—

    Chili Davis: [Laughter]

Ben:—Struck out 17 Yankees, and I think Tom Boswell, who writes for The Washington Post, said that it was the greatest game ever pitched at Yankee Stadium, and no one else could touch him, and you homered off him somehow, and that was the only hit of the game.

Davis: Well, I’ll tell you a story about that. You want to hear a story about that? You know, he came here, and you could tell he had a lightning fastball. And, I don’t know who led off, was it Derek Jeter or Chuck Knoblauch, but whoever led off, he pitched him hard inside, hard inside, hard inside. I think he either hit Jeter, or he hit Knoblauch, he might have hit ’em both, I don’t remember.

Ben: Yeah, he did hit Knoblauch leading off that game.

Davis: And then, Paul O’Neill came up, and he came hard in on O’Neill, jammed him, Bernie Williams came up, he came hard in on Bernie, jammed him, got out of the inning. Well, the next inning, he’s warming up, and Tino Martinez and I are standing on the on-deck circle, and I remember walking over to Tino and saying, “Tino, he’s got a good heater today, and he knows it. He knows it, Tino, and he’s coming in.” Everybody that came up, he started them fastball, hard in. I said, “If I was you, Tino, I’d look in, and try to turn on something.” And Tino was in a slump at the time, and he looked at me, and he was like “You know, uh, you know uh, uh, I don’t know,” kind of hesitant to take the game plan up there. So he went up there, and I think Pedro jammed him up inside, broke his bat or something, and he went back to the dugout. And I stand on deck, and I go, “You know what, you [expletive]? You come in here. Yeah, I know I’m 40, or 39, or whatever years old, I know you think you can get it in. But I’m looking in here. You throw that first-pitch heater in here, and I’m gonna turn on it.” And I’d no sooner said it, he threw that heater inside, and I, I was looking for it, and boom! Turned on it, you know, yeah.”

  142. Someone Else

“dave winfield coulnt even wear his yankees cap at the allstar game. why does he bother to come back here anymore.”

Didn’t he go into the HOF as a Padre?

  143. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Oooo I’d love to be Cora Rizutto right now!

  144. fred from jersey

    so?

  145. mark

doesn’t that one ballboy who was walking with Billy Martin’s wife look like Humberto Sanchez?

  146. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

you know we were talking about the pitchers sticking around, I’m fine with Daryl sticking around to come off the bench over Betemit

  147. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I don’t care that the Angels are the hottest team in baseball right now, they have to be in awe of what just happened in Yankee Stadium and what they have been privileged enough to witness. I’m sure they’ve already been to Monument Park to witness the rest…

  148. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Joe is playing? Um shouldn’t he be getting ready for the game. ;)

  149. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Al Leiter looks like he could still toss an inning or two.

  150. Jorge Tabata

How many pitches will Leiter throw in the 1st inning?

  151. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Joe looks like he can catch a game.

  152. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I think I was the only one who was willing to give Boomer a try when three of our starters went down. I still would have done it.

  153. Thomo

Yogi was not always last – that honor went to Joe D with the Mick being the penultimate player announced.

  154. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

good to see Willie Randolph, David Wells, and all these old Yanks back in uniforms

    feels good inside.

  155. Someone Else

    Man, Reggie+Strawberry+Henderson – that’s some massive ego ;-)

  156. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Oh man, this is gonna be fun.

I wanna see someone hit a home run!

  157. Someone Else

I’d love to see an SB ;-)

It’s not like it’s Yogi behind the plate, though – Girardi can still throw.

  158. Someone Else

Goose and Guidry are throwing BP ;-)

  159. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

RANDOLPH FOR 3RD BASE COACH! (capS)

  160. pat

Girardi can still handle the ball in the dirt.

  161. Someone Else

(sarcasm) WHAT A HORRIBLE AB BY RAINES! DFA HIM! (/sarcasm)

  162. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

…Can we sign these guys to play offense or something?

  163. Cody

Gosh, some of these guys are better than the current players. Let’s bring Rivers back for Melky.

  164. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

    i hear a roll call!

  165. Someone Else

    How’s Cone’s velocity? ;-)

  166. Cody

Forget Willie coming back as a coach. He could be Cano’s backup.

  167. Jorge Tabata

LOL Edwar is in the dugout

  168. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

A sure way for the Yankees to get a W -

Inning over, Yankees retired; Yankees coming to bat…

  169. Cody

Joba is great. You have to love the young kid watching this from the dugout.

  170. Mike

Bernie should be here. He needs to get over his issues with the team.

  171. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Is Knobs here somewhere????

    ;)

  172. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Mike, look how long it took Yogi to come back.

  173. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Dave Winfield’s still got it!

Seriously, half of these bats are better than the guys playing now.

  174. Someone Else

Man, Henderson/Boggs/Winfield/Strawberry. That could have been the 1-4 on an All Star team in the 90s.

  175. Mike

Yeah, but Yogi was lied to be Steinbrenner, who apologized, Bernie’s issues are more Bernie’s issues. The team is not going to apologize for severing ties with an aging player.

  176. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Mike, I absolutely agree with you about Bernie. Despite my love for Bernie as a Yankee I felt it was the absolute right thing to do. He refused to even come back to spring training so that was that.

  177. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

I’m not normally one to complain about the lineup, but why is Giambi STILL batting 5th?!? Auuurgh….didn’t we see enough last night?

And then the bottom 3rd are all auto outs to boot. Can Christian get a start in center please?? Sucks to see WB too but at least Cano’s sore hand will explain his slump over the past week. Resting him to get him back to normal is the best call but is he available to PH?

  178. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

What part of Willie Randolph is not going to be a 3B coach don’t people understand, what part of he wasn’t a good 3B coach don’t people want to remember.

    ANYWAY

OT: When I see things like this it scares me a team is 100 % in unisend and ready to emerge

    link

  179. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

and Nelson wanted to play this year… not with that ball control lol

  180. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Brandon- You mean wave him home willie haha.

  181. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

Guess Bernie’s at home playing Jazz while watching this show.

There’s been players who have been treated badly by the Yankees only to come back.

    Bernie should be here.

  182. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Oh, and I would have given Boomer a try too. In fact, I’d have half a mind to retain his services after the game, or at least tell him to stick close by…hah, kidding, kinda..

  183. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Jesus Nelson still has that freaky movement on his pitches.

  184. Doreen

I’ve been watching and folding laundry. Who’s having a better tim than Willie Randolph??? A lot of these guys look like they could play today. Of course, a lot of these guys only just retired. It’s so incredible that so many of them were on the 90s dynasty team. Wow, time has just rushed on by, ahasn’t it?

I can’t stop smiling and tears are coming to my eyes. This is so amazing and I’m only just watching it on t.v. :)

  185. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Can we sign Jeff Nelson?

  186. fred from jersey

Bernie is wearing on me too. Making bad choices not coming around for the last year of the stadium.

  187. Mike

Personally, the whole 1998 team should be here! 10 year anniversary!

  188. Tank

hopefully Henderson won’t be playing cards with the guys in the dugout when the game starts.

  189. Doreen

Look, Bernie just wasn’t ready. Let him be. It’ll be okay.

You hope that this accumulation of Yankees will inspire the current group.

  190. Doreen

I’m so bummed that I missed the introductions. Do you think YES will replay this later?

  191. YankeesTech

No, Bernie was going on vacation that’s why he wasn’t here

  192. Tank

Doreen – YESnetwork.com TV schedule says they will re-play at it at 8 PM tonight

  193. fred from jersey

“I’m so bummed that I missed the introductions. Do you think YES will replay this later?”

it will rerun at 8pm tonight

  194. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Brandon- You mean wave him home willie haha.

Yup that guy. You know who I’d give a shot
at 3B now people won’t like it but he’s cocky, a smart baserunner read OF arms perfectly

    Rickey

  195. Bob(The Original)

Is the game gonna start on time?

  196. NongEyeJonButchWynegar

I’m sure the invitation was extended to Bernie. He just still thinks he can play, and wonders why he wasn’t picked up at the trade-deadline as the extra-bat.

  197. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

It was a 3.55 game so no reason they shouldn’t start on time.

  198. mel

OK. Mark Grace just went up a bit in my book. Calling out the Red Sox for creating the Manny being Manny monster.

  199. Bob(The Original)

    Is the OT stuff over?

  200. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

You know who would make a great 3B coach, Now alot of people won’t like him but Rickey Henderson would be perfect.

  201. bavd in reverse

“Enjoy the Geme”…Pete, are you serious ? You mean enjoy the Yankees continue to show WHY they are 10 games back of the Angels in the AL standings ? You mean, enjoy your team either getting the SNOT kicked out of it today to stay on pace to lose 4 straght to the HALOS and 5 straight over all ? OR even better yet,,,,enjoy your team playing JUST good enough to come up one run short and lose another 1-0 or 7-6 game ? No thanks…I’ll go to the HOA pool and relax….These Yankees wear me OUT ! ;-(

  202. fred from jersey

“OK. Mark Grace just went up a bit in my book. Calling out the Red Sox for creating the Manny being Manny monster.”

i was shocked to hear that on Fox too.

  203. Vrsce

    MoBoy(aka McLovin)

    Bernie treated badly? Hardly.

  204. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

BTW we can’t ignore the Orioles I was wondering about it and called it since early in the season, that team is going to be a pest vs whoever they play Red Sox, Yankees, Twins, Rays…they have the “IT FACTOR” basically Kevin Millar has changed that whole clubhouse. Very promising future.

  205. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Mel, yep and he is so right. I remember the trade from Cleveland and Manny’s first official act was to announce he wouldn’t be playing right field. Then when they tried to get him to do it he quickly pulled up with a hammy. And they let him get away with it. Mind you Boston got him to be their right fielder!

That loser organization gets what they deserve in the end. Another thing I remember is when Pedro played for them and was scheduled to pitch and wasn’t there an hour before gametime, nor did he call in. So Williams (?) benched him in put someone else in. Pedro went and complained to Duquette about it and they gave him a wristwatch to shut him up and never disciplined him. Then there were all the seasons Pedro didn’t show up until ST until he was ready, Manny blew off the ASG etc. etc. etc.

Makes me really happy to have the strictness that you basically see as part of the Yanks org.

  206. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

    Bernie on vacation?

Two years of vacation is a long time to be on vacation.

  207. kill.schill(ing)

Anyone listen to WCBS’s pre-game? What’s the word on Robbie? How badly is his wrist ailing him? Is it swollen or is Joe just resting him? Is he in real pain?

  208. Kelli in Conn.

I still can’t believe that Betemit is in the lineup again. It’s reached the point of being laughable. An absolute joke.

  209. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Who should be playing 2nd Kelli?

  210. Coach Jay23

Brandon I agree with you somewhat, Ricky maybe at 1st and Pena at 3rd????

  211. YankeesTech

The team invited Williams to Oldtimers Day on Aug. 2. For now, Williams has declined because of a long-planned vacation with his family. Club officials are holding out hope that he will change his mind this week.

  212. blackdragon905

kelli, i completely agree with u, im so sick and tired of the betemit love fest

  213. NongEyeJonButchWynegar

Wayne Tolleson is in the house for 2nd.

  214. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Brandon I agree with you somewhat, Ricky maybe at 1st and Pena at 3rd????

    Other way around.

  215. bavd in reverse

trisha – YOU should be playing 2nd….SUIT UP !!!

  216. TKinDC

When was the last time a member of the Weaver family won a game at the big ballpark in the Bronx?

    Jeff was certainly a P.O.S.

  217. Coach Jay23

I see what ur saying but Ricky is all the time leader in steals so maybe he can help get guys leads and pick things up. But I agree i think hed be great for us.

  218. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Texeria is smoking some serious stuff. Thinks he can get a 10 year deal.

  219. pat

Tex told Fox he’s looking for a 10 year deal?

  220. mark

is pena signed beyond this year? we need to keep him here long term

  221. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Someone other than Betemit?

    Heck, sign Tony Fernandez.

  222. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Yankees FO execs. told Rosenthal the ship has sailed on Jared Washburn they will not pick him up if he hits waivers.

  223. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Texeria is smoking some serious stuff. Thinks he can get a 10 year deal.

And that’s why NY is a NO for him.

  224. 34hughes

Good some sense into no picking up washburn

  225. pat

Small sample size but Yanks numbers against Weaver are sad. Looks like it’s up to the Giambino today

  226. JR Yankees

Don’t mean to take anything away from anybody lucky enough to be watching OT day, but Rosenthal just said that Teixeira is looking to get a 10 year deal.

Is this really the road we want to go down? He is an excellent player but isn’t 10 years a little long for sombody not in Jeter/Arod territory?

  227. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Why must we be subjected to Joe and Tim.

  228. 34hughes

teixeira is crazy nobody is going to give him that

  229. BBFan

On which channel is the game today?
    Thanks.

  230. TKinDC

Teixeira is on the same Boras high that ManRam is – they both overvalue themselves.

Manny thinks he can get 4 years $100M
Tex thinks he can play till 38

    Not going to happen imho.

  231. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I don’t think the Yankees will hand out a 10 year deal to anyone else. Alex was the first and last.

  232. Jack ( captin clutch is still alive! never give up on jeter/willie for manager )

    we will win 2day!

  233. pat

    BB

    Fox

  234. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    BBB: Saturday Afternoon = FOX

  235. TKinDC

“Yankees FO execs. told Rosenthal the ship has sailed on Jared Washburn they will not pick him up if he hits waivers.”

    Brandon –

If this is true I am VERY happy – we don’t need Wash next year and between IPK, Aceves and the various retreads we can get into the playoffs. imho.

  236. Coach Jay23

I think the Mets may actually give TEX that 10 year deal. I think the Yanks could give him say a 7 year deal with the final 2 years of it opition years.

  237. pat

Jeter was the first, Alex will probably be the last.

  238. Our Lady of Sorrow

    Game time!
And time to lose, again :(

  239. Suzyn Waldman

Oh my Gawd … Clemens said he couldn’t make the Old Timers game.

  240. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    we will win 2day!

I sure hope so becaise this Angels team owns us since 2002 game 2…They own us pimp style, Ric flair slaps to the chest style, Austin 3:16 style.

  241. pat

Tex is Boras and Boras doesn’t do team options.

  242. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    TKinDC

I heard on the radio that the whole deal with Manny wanting the options dropped out of his contract was Boras driven. Apparently Boras was not his agent when the contract was signed, so he would not get a cut if the option was picked up.

  243. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“trisha – YOU should be playing 2nd….SUIT UP !!!”

I’d much rather be here upsetting people who love to complain!

    ;)

  244. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Tell me I’m not the only one watching this?

  245. TKinDC

    Waldman’s Analysis:

“They have to start winning some games”

Which commandment is ‘Thou shalt not steal’?

  246. YankeesTech

    lol at Justin..

  247. BBFan

“I don’t think the Yankees will hand out a 10 year deal to anyone else. Alex was the first and last.”

Winfield was the first to get 10 year deal from Yanks :)

  248. DFox

Oh my god, are you watching Justin Speier doing the Angels starting lineup?

  249. gayle

Anyone else here at the stadium is ed randall the pa announcer today. The reg fill in it isnt- thankfully but sounds like randall

It is hot as hades now

  250. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Make that the second and last. :)

  251. robbiesmelk

    oh.. my.. god..

  252. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

someone should tell Justin Speier Mike Tyson doesn’t take insults well.

  253. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

bbfan- Okay. I’ll just say that Alex is the last. lol

  254. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I expect us to win today. I am going to be soooooo unhappy if we don’t. How close did we come last night.

    GO MOOSE!!!!!

  255. pat

    oops. forgot Winfield.

  256. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    That was…

I’m not sure there are words for it.

  257. TKinDC

    jennifer-

Boras just signed ManRam as a client in the last year – If Manny had just (gulp) settled for the 2, $20M options left on his Boston contract then Boras would have made zero.

  258. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

This just in, Mike Tyson is on his way to Yankee Stadium to find Justin.

  259. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

Finally some stability with Molina catching

  260. Kelli in Conn.

    Trisha ;

Reports on Cody Ransom at AAA are good. DFA the non-contributor Betemit.

  261. Global Warming

“Finally some stability with Molina catching”

Yeah that Rodriguez did a terrible job catching/calling yesterday.

  262. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Finally some stability with Molina catching

We didn’t lose because of Pudge, infact he deserves enormous credit for nursing Ponson through that game yesterday. Pettitte pitched like a bum on Thursday, Mo you saw what happened last night another catcher wouldn’t have made a difference there.

  263. BBFan

“bbfan- Okay. I’ll just say that Alex is the last. lol”

    100% agree.
Even in the case of AROd, they gave 10 yr contract because of the special circumstances related to lifetime HR record.

  264. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Oy, Mike, INSIDE.

  265. thunderfangabe

who do we think will do the yankees lineup intro??

  266. Pedro

    Strikes Moose.

  267. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Okay.

For the love of old guys in baseball suits, can we PLEASE score some runs?

  268. TKinDC

“We didn’t lose because of Pudge, infact he deserves enormous credit for nursing Ponson through that game yesterday.”

    Amen!

Moose didn’t feel like giving Tex a cookie – seemed to work out ok!

  269. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    GOOOOOSE!

  270. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

    Goose look at the camera.

  271. Pedro

This lineup introduction is the only good thing about the Fox broadcast.

  272. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

you would think Goose would’ve read over what they wanted him to say before he did that lol.

The funniest is still the Yankees Universe commercial with A-Rod.

  273. TKinDC

I hope the people holding Goose hostage have let him go! lol

    Loosen up Goose! :)

  274. will

How can you bench a 300 hitter in rodriguez? WTF? You find a way for him to be in the lineup

  275. mel

No complaints about the strikes/balls calling in Teixeira’s at-bat?

  276. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Didn’t realize Manny was a Gretzky fan.

  277. Pedro

Damon didn’t have one good swing on that AB. This is going to be a looong game.

  278. TKinDC

lol Rebecca – double 9’s? Where is Robert Parish?

  279. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Didn’t realize Manny was a Gretzky fan.

He’s not , he’s wearing it because 34 and 24 are not available, 34 because Fernando wore that number so he chose 99 because someone told him Gretzky wore that and he decided eh why not “The Great One”

  280. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Well, uh, we’re making him throw a lot of pitches?

  281. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

you now I’d flip flop Damon and Jetes in this lineup then flip flop Nady and Giambi

  282. Chris

It’s good that the Yankees are driving up Weaver’s pitch count early. This could bode well in later innings.

  283. Vrsce

At least Jeter made him pitch a few more than Damon

  284. JR Yankees

Santana looks like a GQ advertisement sitting in the dugout.

  285. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Back to work Moose

  286. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Picking up right back off where they left last night.

  287. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Seriously, we should have the old timers playing.

At least they won’t strike out the bleepin’ side.

  288. JR Yankees

Brandon I have been saying that same thing. Girardi needs to start flipping around some people in the order.

  289. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

At least Jeter made him pitch a few more than Damon

I’d still flip flop them to keep the hole in 2nd base open for a basehit instead of the GIDP

  290. will

ahhh to be young and in shape and a millionaire.

  291. Our Lady of Sorrow

    Game over already? :(

  292. Vrsce

Flip all you want, Cano struggles with a bad hand and the entire team hitting tanks.

  293. JB-Playoffs here we come

Hey guys, i missed the top o’ the first. How’d Moose look?

  294. Pedro

Not very encouraging, but at least we made him throw 23 pitches.

  295. TKinDC

    JB-

    Good.

  296. will

    GG

  297. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

    why didnt Bobby dived?

  298. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Moose, come on, we’re not going to get swept by the Angels.

  299. 34hughes

    ohoh

  300. 38HotDogs

Would it kill Abreu to dive for one ball in his Yankee tenure – I’m done with the guy

  301. TKinDC

“I’d still flip flop them to keep the hole in 2nd base open for a basehit instead of the GIDP”

    Brandon –

Damon hits to all fields – Jete uses an inside out swing to hit the ball to right.

It would make zero sense to flip flop them. (imho.)

  302. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Uh Oh

  303. Pedro

If Moose continues to suck, it’s bye bye PS. He needs to get it going right now.

  304. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“Would it kill Abreu to dive for one ball in his Yankee tenure – I’m done with the guy.”

I believe he made a stellar catch only just last night.

  305. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

nyy better find out fast, how to defeat this team.

    or no playoffs.

  306. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Moose. STOP NIBBLING.

  307. TKinDC

    Angel –

    2 stellar catches -

Abreu doesn’t dive – and he is wall shy – but he played his butt off last night.

  308. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

    Thank You Giambi, really.

    GRRRR!

  309. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

This is so not our year.

  310. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

thanks Giambi for killing that DP.

  311. will

oh look no cano, and we got the scrub playing 2nd base

  312. BBFan

Hopefully, we can get out of the inning just giving up one run.

The infield defense is really killing the Yanks.
A good 1B would have gotten to the ball by Anderson. In stead two guys in scoring poistion with Abrue not playing the ball well.

Only ARod and Cano are reliable infielders. In the off season they have to address this defficiency

  313. JR Yankees

Horrible throw by Betemit and horrible pick by Giambi!

  314. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

what is the fascination with betemit again? throw the ball don’t aim it.. i don’t care about the slide, you still need to get the ball there

  315. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    These 2 runs feel like 20. :(

  316. Pedro

Great throw Betemit. What a pathetic player.

  317. 34hughes

    betemit dfa

  318. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

why not let Christian play 2b since he was an infielder before?

  319. Coach Jay23

    CANO wouldve made that play

  320. JB-Playoffs here we come

That’s on Betemit. Not Giambi. If Giambe got it, it would’ve been a great play, but he’s not a “great” 1st baseman…Either way, it’s on Betemit.

  321. lil' m

Maybe Joe G should ask Tino to suit up and fill in at first LOL. Less than stellar fielding against this team will kill ya . . .

  322. BBFan

…. Another defensive screw up and we are down by 2. Now Moose is upset and hopefully he will have composure and pitch well rest of the way.

  323. Let the HBP pay off

    Betemit is a jerk.

  324. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

That was a horrible throw but DAMMIT GIAMBI CATCH THAT BALL !

  325. Phil

Abreu, Betemit and Giambi better all hit homers today…

  326. Hybrid Moments

How the hell can you blame Giambi for that? The throw from Betemit looked like a limp wristed fairy was playing second. There is no reason for Betemit to be on this team. He sucks at everything.

  327. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Thats right, TK. I forgot the other one.

Seeing what happened to Damon when he slammed against the wall, and how long he was out – I can’t say I blame him one bit.

  328. Wander

    I hate Betemit.

  329. Pedro

Betemit must be the worst player in the majors. He can’t hit and he can’t field at any position. What does he offer to the team?

  330. longtime

how are we going to score 3 runs?

  331. fred from jersey

    DFA

  332. 34hughes

buck: darell rasner beat the cubs yesterday i wish

  333. Cody

Betemit can’t play. He can’t play defensive, he can’t hit, he can’t run. He can strikeout. Why the hell does Joe insist on running him out there so often? We cannot live with him as the second baseman if Cano is out for an extended period of time.

  334. fred from jersey

“Betemit must be the worst player in the majors. He can’t hit and he can’t field at any position. What does he offer to the team?”

    NOTHING.

  335. BBFan

In the off season, Jeter has to be a team player and volunteer to move from SS. If not, Cash has to sit down and tell him he is bing moved to first or LF.

Then cash should try to trade for an SS and a 1B who are very good defenders.

  336. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    All right.

How about we not strike out three times in the bottom of the inning?

What’s the over/under on the next time the Yankees score a run?

    Thursday evening?

  337. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

I better get out the cheese and crackers for all the whine being drunk by the keg.

  338. hzk yanks fan

this ump is terrible!! kill him

  339. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

Brandon, time to bring up the “trade for Keppinger” debate?

  340. Jaewon

    TERRIBLE DEFENSE

this is why the angels are beating the yankees.
the angels have athletes on their team
giambi and abreu are both terrible defenders

  341. Pedro

We actually gave up a reliable reliever to get this piece of s**t? DFA betemit.

  342. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

How on earth did this become about Jeter being at SS?

    Have you gone mad?

  343. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Alright-get to work Yankee bats. Please show us some signs of life

  344. Jorge Steinbrenner

I’m so glad we traded Alberto Gonzalez, since Betemit is such a perfect utility infielder. Wow. For once, the LoHud blog hyperbole is well-deserved.

Anyone blame that one on Melky yet?

  345. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Betemit must be the worst player in the majors. He can’t hit and he can’t field at any position. What does he offer to the team?

He’s not the worst he’s just as incosistant as any average MLB player.. I just don’t they even shopped him to any team, I mean LH power hitting INF like him and your telling me no one would bite..I can’t get a Keppinger or Loretta for this guy ..I can’t believe that.

  346. TKinDC

“Betemit can’t play. He can’t play defensive, ”

    Cody –

apparently you didn’t see last night’s game. He stole a double from an angel and kept the game at 0-0

  347. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

Jeter has been fine defensively.. yes he’s probably a league average shortstop right now, but he’s not a problem at SS. Now BETEMIT needs to go! We can’t score as it is and we give them 2 gift runs

  348. george

i’ve finally joined the Get Rid of Betemit Movement.

it was a pathetic attempt at turning a DP. This guy has shown he can play all 4 positions poorly, and whiff a lot from both sides of the plate. very versatile in his badness.

  349. jeter not at ss next year

I agree that Jeter should move but not until a replacement that can both field and hit. I don’t think they will move A-rod to SS. There aren’t any shortstops available. When is Girardi going to learn that betemit is the worst player in the league. He blows simple as that

  350. Jaewon Shaquami III

nice break there, what is Garret thinking?

  351. BBFan

Now our big bats have to score at least one run, to change the psyche of the whole team.

  352. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

What’s the over/under on an out that’s not a strike out?

  353. Coach Jay23

Ok we are agreeing that either Betemit or Giambi should make that play, however you can not walk 2 guys in an inning especially against Angles.

  354. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

You can’t remind them of things like that, TK.

This is a fact free zone during games.

  355. Pedro

I’m glad our batters are trying to swing the bat.

  356. Jorge Steinbrenner

“How on earth did this become about Jeter being at SS? Have you gone mad?”

ah, the other battle cry of the frustrated and imbalanced.

thank god Nady’s in the lineup today. someone on here may have committed suicide otherwise.

enjoy the game. we’ll put one in play eventually. :)

  357. Cody

    I predict… 26 strikeouts.

West is a terrible umpire. He’s always been terrible. He likes to get games over with quick. Don’t be surprised to see a 2-2 1/2 hour game.

  358. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

I’m so glad we traded Alberto Gonzalez, since Betemit is such a perfect utility infielder. Wow. For once, the LoHud blog hyperbole is well-deserved.

Gonzo couldn’t be a run producer hence why he’s gone plus they view Ramiro Pena better than him and got a a young promising arm in Jhonny Nunez who he can touch 96 mph.

  359. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

So now we need to move Jeter from SS? Alrighty. I’ll call Joe and let him know

Time to shave the ’stache Big G

  360. JR Yankees

Is that the 4th or 5th K looking Arod has watched in his past 2 games?

  361. BBB

Wilson Betemit should not be allowed to play professional baseball.

Meanwhile, hmm, Yanks down early…I think we’ve all seen this movie before and know full well how it ends. I’m half inclined to just save myself the heartache, but in the end i probably won’t haha.

  362. Jaewon Shaquami III

this ump is all over the place

  363. pat

Hope someone didn’t tell X the Yanks can’t beat the Angels.

  364. Pedro

“apparently you didn’t see last night’s game. He stole a double from an angel and kept the game at 0-0″

And that somehow makes up for all the misplays he’s made with the Yankees, especially when he plays middle infield.

  365. Jaewon Shaquami III

that betemit play made me cry. I CAN TURN A DP BETTER THEN THAT

  366. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

    X-Man

  367. pat

  373. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

    he still sucks

  374. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    ….

You so knew that was going to happen.

  375. Cody

    HOLY HELL.

    BETEMIT JUST MADE CONTACT.

No wait… that looks like Mickey Rivers filling in for Betemit.

  376. Let the HBP pay off

    Betemit did his job.

  377. Confucius

    We were saying?

  378. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

wow, Betemit you fixed your mistake.

  379. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

  380. JR Yankees

  381. TKinDC

    HIGH FAR GONE!

    w00t

  382. Wander

Fine Betemit, that makes up for it. He crushed that ball.

  383. Matzo

Betemit is a butcher. Why couldn’t they have traded him to Washington and kept AG?

  384. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Cono ete me cojona mas que todo los jugadors de la grande liga

  390. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Oh my goodness! Runs! YAY!

  391. Pedro

    I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t been watching

  392. slipper

trisha you got zero credibility. You have defended Igawa, Farnsworth, and every other scrub.

  393. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Wow even Buck craps on Melky. He must read the blog.

  394. Michael T

OK so that just make3s Betemit even for the 2 runs he cost them in the 2nd inning. Lets see how many outs Mussina has to work around in the 3rd. I count 7 in the 2nd:

    - 3 he actuall got

    - Anderson lead-off grounder where Giambi was stuck in cement

    - Kendrick fly ball to right that was in the air way to long to drop

    - Strike 3 not called on Sarge JR

    – Feebel DP turn by Betemit/Giambi

  395. Lance

Betemit. Good for one homer every 15 at bats. And 14 K’s.

  396. mel

    I called that one…to myself.

Good for Betamit. I’m sure he was getting trashed here. :)

  397. george

wow, Betemit hitting one there is funny, given the loathing he just, deservedly, inspired. baseball – gotta love it.

  398. BBFan

“How on earth did this become about Jeter being at SS? Have you gone mad?”

It is not about Jeter specifically.
It is about overall infield defense and Jeter is a weaklink as well. They need to address the overall infield defense in the off season.

  399. Jorge Steinbrenner

“This team just doesn’t have any heart. The season looks shot right now.”

and in the second inning someone busts that one out! this must be some sort of record.

i look forward to someone making this comment during the pre-game next time.

  400. Peking

Melky is a black hole in CF.

He is a absolutely horrendous hitter.

  401. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Jorge: Probably.

  402. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Oh damn, now i have to put the cheese and crackers away. I had some gruyere for the taking too.

  403. Annie Savoy

Best Old Timer’s Game ever – must be the new group who can still really play – for fun.

  404. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Man Bet you are one of the most promising power bats in baseball and easily the most frustrating batter to watch game to game.

  405. TKinDC

    “I called that one…to myself.”

mel – forgive me if I don’t call you for lottery numbers :)

  406. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Okay, so as I was saying (only you didn’t know it since I had to do a fast Betemit post)

A lot of Yankees must have been dumped between the beginning of the game and now because there were a ton of posts!!!

I was driving along, after having watched Moose master the first inning, and I was thinking that if I was home I would be posting that we should be able to kick the crap out of Weaver – and then I come out of the drugstore to an Angel’s bases loaded situation! (But now maybe some of the pith leaves this post!)

So then here is what I was thinking. Remember the year the Tigers went to the World Series? Well if I remember correctly Cleveland, who was a hot hot hot team, had a collapse of monumental proportions during the last three weeks of the season, and Detroit only made the playoffs on the very last day of the season.

TGIA – thank God it’s (only) August.

  407. mel

Is #26 available for the Yankees?

  408. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“It is not about Jeter specifically.
It is about overall infield defense and Jeter is a weaklink as well. ”

Jeter might not be having his usual year offensively, but he’s been much improved this year defensively.

  409. BBFan

But for the defenseive screw ups, Moose is pitching well.
Now that the game is tied, we will win this game.

  410. Original V

Jeter is going to have to move off SS next year. Anyone watching can see he cannot field the position anymore. He needs to play second base.

  411. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    “I called that one…to myself.

Good for Betamit. I’m sure he was getting trashed here.”

Heh. You crack me up, Mel.

  412. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

That was just the inning that Moose needed.

  413. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“trisha you got zero credibility. You have defended Igawa, Farnsworth, and every other scrub.”

Yeah okay. I have some kleenex for you since you obviously need it.

Igawa was obviously a very bad call on my part. Farnsworth was a good call. All of my other calls have worked out too little one.

    Bye now.

  414. TKinDC

    MOOOOOOOSE!!!!!!!

  415. BBFan

“Jeter might not be having his usual year offensively, but he’s been much improved this year defensively.”

    Improved from what? Unacceptable?
Our infield defense stinks. Have you been watching the last three games? Did you see how Angels are taking advantage of it?

  416. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Nice inning for Moose.
Now get him some more runs

  417. mel

    TK,

I’ll be sure to screen my calls. :P

  418. mel

Does Aybar not know that Moose is a great fielder?

  419. Eric

People like trisha make reading this board fun. beats reading all the negative people like SJ44. The woe is me crowd isn’t fun to read. Keep it up, trisha.

  420. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Melky is a black hole in CF. He is a absolutely horrendous hitter.”

    another one right on cue…

a split here would be pretty nice. i get to see Rasner pitch for the third time this year at the stadium tomorrow. it’s like i’m his personal audience or something this year.

  421. YES

Now is the time to get to Weaver.

  422. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Literally I’m a huge Bet supporter but he pisses me the F*** off ! Consistancy and he would be one of the great HR hitters in this league, hits above 28 % in LD percentages yet K’s out in 1/4 or 2/4 of his AB..if there is a market deal him already whether it’s waivers or next season get me a utility that can hit consistantly and field positions

    Jeff Keppinger
    Mark Loretta

    just to name a few.

  423. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    My favorite Molina.

  424. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    mel: Jose wears 26

  425. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Eric -

    THANK YOU!!!!!

Seriously, I seldom get props here (which is okay).

    :D

  426. JR Yankees

    Take that Pudge!

Just kidding, we need you too.

  427. YES

“Melky is a black hole in CF. He is a absolutely horrendous hitter.”

We have someone that has been watching and pointing out the obvious.

  428. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

I’ll add another name to the list Christian Guzman

  429. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

beats reading all the negative people like SJ44. The woe is me crowd isn’t fun to read.

Has he even been posting today? What is this obsession some have with him?

  430. Pics

Brandon has really got to get over Jeff Keppinger. It is getting creepy.

  431. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    “Improved from what? Unacceptable?
Our infield defense stinks. Have you been watching the last three games? Did you see how Angels are taking advantage of it?”

Improved from playing on an injured knee last year.

Yes, they really took advantage of their defense last night. I couldn’t see for all the runs they scored due to shoddy Yankee defense. My bad.

  432. timo

Cleveland’s collapse was in ‘05 and had the effect of handing the wild card to the AL East. The Indians were never in the race in ‘06, when Detroit went to the WS.

  433. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

    thank you Damon….c’mon Jeter….

  434. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--9-5)

Molina has his PF Flyers on

  435. Lance

I think we may have this game.

  436. mel

    Nice baserunning by Jose!

  437. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

  438. Steve

    Molina is a hero.

  439. TKinDC

We officially now have the 2nd fast Molina = = = WooT :)

  440. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Please start running now…

  441. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

lol, eric picked a new name today, SA.

  442. BBFan

Damon should steal now and avoid the agony of GIDP by the captain. If he gets thrown out, so be it.

  443. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Nice running Jose!

  444. Jorge Steinbrenner

I think the Keppinger stuff is funny….as is Jose Molina trying to run as fast as he can.

The SJ hate is incredibly sad and shallow. Him and CB are the class of this comment section.

  445. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

    hm… i didn’t see that coming.

at least we got the run though

  446. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    And Jeter, right on cue…

  447. JR Yankees

    Is Joe West’s stomach leaking?

That’s how you go from 1st to 3rd too Pudge!

Again, just kidding, we still need you too.

Just tryin to keep it loose here.

PS-Jeter shouldn’t get an RBI on that play for GiDP.

  448. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

The Return of the Double Play Staring Derek Jeter.

Notice how he doesn’t post during wins??

  450. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

Brandon, how about Felipe Lopez? recently released by the Nationals.

  451. pat

    A productive GIDP?

  452. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

my god flip flop THEM !

  453. Cody

Hey, how did I predict that? Poor, Captain.

  454. mel

Whatever, it scored a run. They could’ve gotten Jose at home, actually. Go, go, go, Yankees.

  455. Pedro

A first pitch DP. Absolutely great job, Jeter.

  456. Steve

Jeter is a DP championship for Yankees.

    17th for him so far.

    Sad to say.

  457. Nate

    Jeter has to go.

  458. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

    He doesn’t get an RBI.

  459. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    LOL Angel! Probably :P

  460. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Brandon, how about Felipe Lopez? recently released by the Nationals.

    He sucks

  461. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Well, we have the lead. :|

  462. Matt

1st and 3rd, no outs, a chance for a HUGE inning with Abreu and A-Rod up. And what does Jeter do?

Swings at the first pitch down and away, hits it on the ground to short, double play.

The run scored, but in the process, he destroyed the entire rally and prevented us from really putting a lead up on the board.

This is why Derek Jeter MUST be moved out of the 2 hole.

  463. BBFan

… damn…Damon did not even get the chance to steal.
Jeter needs to be pushed down in the batting order so that he does not continue to kill rallies like this.

  464. Glenn in Jersey

“The SJ hate is incredibly sad and shallow. Him and CB are the class of this comment section.”

The guy is a pompous jerk. He’s unreadable with Yankee hate. You can worship him but some of us won’t. Sorry.

  465. David Cone's Labrum

Why girardi doesnt start damon there, or why in the holy hell jeter swings at the first pitch is a friggin MYSTERY!

  466. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

    thank you Bobby.

  467. Boxy

Jeter is having a terrible season. It is painful.

  468. Cody

Aren’t we all glad that short porch will be the same at the new Stadium? :)

  469. G. Love (*coined the term Prospect Hugger)

It’s time someone in the media has the stones to call Jeter out for this GIDP nonsense and start the movement to get him removed from the 2 hole.

  470. mel

Okay, now the DP hurt. But that’s okay. Way to go Bobby.

  471. TKinDC

    wtg Bobay!

  472. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

timo, well maybe Chicago handed it over to Detroit. But the point is that Detroit did not make the postseason until the last day of the season and then went on to represent the AL.

My point is that because a team is hot now is no assurance they will be the last week of September.

So the point of all of that was that we shouldn’t give up the ship because the Angels are so hot. But see I was thinking all of that while I was driving home – and the bases were loaded with Angels. And I started writing my post about it and voila! Betemit got his homer! So I had to revise the post.

But I will say that it looks like my thinking could have been correct when I said that we should be able to kick the crap out of Weaver!

Thanks for the information though. Seriously.

  473. Matt

Imagine how different this inning looks if not for Jeter’s DP ball on the FIRST pitch of the at bat.

  474. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Bobby is on FIRE.

  475. Jorge Steinbrenner

    “Jeter has to go.”

I’m sure you can get on your Xbox360 right now and trade him, if you’d like. In the real world, he’s not going anywhere.

Ken Rosenthal with the amazing realization that the Yankees have a lot of money. Even through Joe Buck’s large cranium off.

Last, but not least, El Comedulce!!!!!!!!!

  476. Jaewon Shaquami III

    Bobby is HOTTTTTTT

  477. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Nice Bobby!

  478. Onesy

Why can’t DJ just strike out?

  479. Phil

Now Giambi just needs to apologize.

  480. JR Yankees

Rosenthal just said he thinks the Yankees will be going for both CC and Tex this offseason.

I guess he doesn’t read the Lohud blog.

    Yeah Bobby!

  481. Jaewon Shaquami III

  482. Original V

    “Jeter has to go.”

He just has to move from SS. Maybe second base. Maybe 1b. maybe outfield.

  483. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

I got a feeling Bobby has found his power stroke.

Come on Alex no pressure here, put the cherry on the ice cream

  484. Pedro

Bobby on a power surge lately!!

  485. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

Glenn – you’re definitely entitled to your opinion, but I will definitely enjoy when SJ and CB throw their input onto the board

  486. JB-Playoffs here we come

I’ve realized that Betemit and I have a love/hate relationship.

  487. BBFan

“Why girardi doesnt start damon there, or why in the holy hell jeter swings at the first pitch is a friggin MYSTERY!”

    Yeah it is Girardi’s fault.
Jeter did not give a chance for Damon to do any thing by swinging at the first pitch.

  488. Jorge Steinbrenner

“The guy is a pompous jerk. He’s unreadable with Yankee hate. You can worship him but some of us won’t. Sorry.”

Right. Because the guy has a balanced view of the business and doesn’t share the reactionary nonsense that people spew on here.

You have a ton to learn about baseball from guys like him. A ton, my friend.

  489. TKinDC

    Nate:

    Jeter has to go.

Thank you for the singularly most ignorant post of the day!

Good work son – hit the showers.

  490. Steve

    I wish DJ had a strike-out.

  491. Salvie

A-Rod finally looks like a hitter.

  492. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Jeter isn’t going anywhere; he just needs to not hit in the two spot.

  493. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Why girardi doesnt start damon there, or why in the holy hell jeter swings at the first pitch is a friggin MYSTERY!”

I can’t disagree especially about starting the runner. It’s crazy.

slipper – Pay close attention to what I say now, because it’s pretty much always right. I told you we should be able to slap the crap out of Weaver!

  494. BBFan

Good to see that Abrue and ARod are continuing the rally.
If only there was no GIDP, the lead would have been substantial.

  495. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Why couldn’t they score these run thingies last night.

  496. FIRE GIRARDI! HIRE WILLIE!!!

Those who are late do not get fruit cup!

  497. timo

Not to pile on but what you are half remembering is that Detroit was knocked out of first into the wild card on the last day. But they had clinched the postseason before that.

  498. Frankie Yankee

Thats 17 GIDP’s for jeter this year already. He had 21 last year and 13 the year before. It seems as though he has hit into a ton of double plays when the Yanks are trying to rally or break a tie.

  499. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

These Weavers aren’t that smart, they should know Alex is weak inside on the hands (because he’s too quick insidebecause he stands behind the plate instead of infront) .

  500. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

SA: Because that would have been too easy.

  501. Nate

I guess you love Jeter hitting like crap and fielding below average at a premium position AGAIN, TKinDC.

Some guys get old. It happens.

  502. Jaewon Shaquami III

the one thing joe bucks said today that makes some sense:

it might be time for the giambino to get rid of the ’stache….
as much as we all love it

    thoughts?

  503. Jorge Steinbrenner

Let’s entertain hypotheticals here….if you had to shuffle A-Rod, Robbie, and Jeter’s positions, is there a combination which would help keep the defense strong as Jeter (and Alex) get older? Would Jeter at 3rd and Alex at short be preferable? Again, just thinking aloud here.

  504. blah

pete, i hope you know that it is going to be thunder storms during the concert

  505. R23

Too bad Melky can’t hit worth a lick or he can hit 2b. Move Pudge to 2.

  506. Pedro

Giambi batting behind A-Rod is definately not going to work. Something needs to be done about that ASAP.

  507. JR Yankees

Agree, Jeter is not going anywhere. Maybe he needs a position change next year or the year after.

However, he needs to start batting lower in the order ASAP.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse here but I have been saying we have the talented pieces, they’re just not in the right order.

  508. BBB

Even Jeter’s GIDP’s can’t silence the Yankees today!

I’ve been wanting Jeter leading off and Damon hitting 2nd for most of the season now. Who do you want hitting with a man on 1st, a guy who almost never gets doubled up or a guy who nearly leads the league in it? It’s simple logic, and yet I doubt Girardi will ever do it.

Sadly it also seems like he will never take Giambi out of the 5-hole…why?

  509. TKinDC

““Why girardi doesnt start damon there, or why in the holy hell jeter swings at the first pitch is a friggin MYSTERY!”

I can’t disagree especially about starting the runner. It’s crazy.”

Pitchers like Moose (and many others) throw 1st pitch strikes. It is just a question of what the scouting says – it really isn’t a mystery.

If a pitcher can’t blow you away with his ’stuff’ he will be more likely to throw a first pitch strike.

  510. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Hold onto this lead please

  511. Onesy

Giambi should have lost the stache weeks ago.

  512. PJH

Brandon- Time to update the Jeter DP counter.

  513. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Not to pile on but what you are half remembering is that Detroit was knocked out of first into the wild card on the last day. But they had clinched the postseason before that.”

    :D

Geeze Louise timo. Okay I got that entire scenario wrong.

Well there is nowhere for me to go with that one, other than to say that there have been teams in the past who have been hot and have not made it to the postseason.

Wait, I’ve got one! Hey gang, don’t let this best record in the regular season, hot hot hot team stuff get to you. Don’t ever forget what happened to the Seattle Mariners who couldn’t lose (basically) during one season and then spit the bit during the postseason!

  514. Matt

    Cano at 3B
    A-Rod at SS
    Jeter at 2B

This should be done possibly even this season.

A-Rod is the best shortstop on this team. He has the most range and a tremendous arm and could make plays up the middle with Cano covering his right that Jeter would never come close to making.

Jeter’s arm is greatly diminished. He is always better at going to his right, so second base is perfect for him, and he doesn’t have to throw as far to get the ball to first so he won’t bounce as many throws.

  515. BBB

Jaewon: Yes. Giambi needs to shave it. It was meant to be a slump-buster, and is now clearly no longer functioning in that capacity. Time to try something else to get going again, where is the gold thong?

  516. Kell

Betemit made a play in the field!

  517. JJ

    Giambi should behind Nady.

  518. BBFan

“Let’s entertain hypotheticals here….if you had to shuffle A-Rod, Robbie, and Jeter’s positions, is there a combination which would help keep the defense strong as Jeter (and Alex) get older? Would Jeter at 3rd and Alex at short be preferable? Again, just thinking aloud here.”

Just shuffling what we have is not going to help.
They need to trade for good defensive SS and 1B and find a different place for Jeter, may be LF or even CF.

  519. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

This is what people mean w/ the compiler Alex’s last hit brought him from .322 to .324

  520. Jorge Steinbrenner

    “Cano at 3B
    A-Rod at SS
    Jeter at 2B

This should be done possibly even this season.”

I had a friend suggest that as well. I definitely don’t think you do this mid-season, though.

Interested in seeing what others think.

  521. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

We should all be managers for a day.

  522. JJ

    Molina is very good catcher.

  523. Dollars and Sense

Can Brandon leave the lefty we should have signed in the off season and a guy raking in his counter? Please.

  524. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

PJH he has 17 GIDP plus one in the All Star game

  525. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Moose!

  526. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

timo I should have forgotten the whole thing because the effect of it (my trying to show that a team that is hot isn’t always there at the end) was lost as soon as we started hitting Weaver! The value of the post was really only for those ten minutes when it looked like the Angels might get the best of us, and before the offense started whacking the ball!

  527. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Nice job again Moose!

  528. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Just shuffling what we have is not going to help.
They need to trade for good defensive SS and 1B and find a different place for Jeter, may be LF or even CF.”

You’re going to put Jeter in CF…..I see.

I’m with you on the 1B situation, though. We need someone who plays the position. It’s not the AARP stopping point for players who are getting too old at other positions.

  529. BBFan

    “Cano at 3B
    A-Rod at SS
    Jeter at 2B

This should be done possibly even this season.”

I do no think ARod can play a good SS now with his body.
You can not make such wholesale changes during the season.
It has to be addressed in the offseason.

For now we are stuck with it. The only thing I can see is Sexon playing more at 1B, where he is very good defensively.

  530. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!)

Very nice job by Moose of settling in after the mess in the 2nd (though not necessarily his fault). He’s thrown a total of 17 pitches in the last two innings.

  531. Whiff (Cano's bat)

just catching the game. So how bad have dumbass and his side kick been blasting the Yankees and praising the Angels for being the best team ever?

Has Buck slobbered all over the microphone on a base hit from Angels?

Wait, let me guess, McCarver did his John Madden impression saying, “if you drop the ball, you can’t be a good defensive team”

Don’t know what is worse, Joe Buck or Tim McCarver. You would think that by now they both would have swallowed their microphones and disappeared.

  532. BBB

“I had a friend suggest that as well. I definitely don’t think you do this mid-season, though.”

Agreed 100%. A-Rod’s offense is too important to this team to take the chance of messing with it by moving his position just in time for the stretch run. He has bulked up a bit to play 3b and has probably lost some of his old SS range as a result. We wouldn’t want him having any issues in the field and bringing them into his AB’s would we? Plus, I would think he’d have to change his workout and diet entirely…spells disaster to do it midseason, imo.

  533. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Nady gets a hit here I’ sub his name for the Johan HR counter

  534. Mattingly's Bat

    Brandon

Hits raise averages, what a concept.

  535. JR Yankees

I like the Cano at 3B, Arod at SS, and Jeter at 2B. Cano was a third baseman I believe. He is young and has a lot of power potential. Playing 3B would allow him to bulk up a little more and get some additional power.

Jeter would be perfect at 2B except he may feel slighted. As he team captain it would be awesome if he initiated a position change. Don’t think it would happen though.

If Arod goes back to SS, he would need to slim down a little but I don’t think it would affect him at the plate. He was very lean during his earlier years playing short and obviously we all know how great he was then.

All of these changes, IMO anyway, would not hinder our defense.

  536. JJ

    suggest line arrange(is better)
    YANKEES (59-50)
    Jeter SS
    Damon DH
    Abreu RH
    Rodriguez 3B
    Nady LF
    Betemit 2B
    Giambi 1B
    Cabrera CF
    Molina C
    Mussina RHP

  537. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

Matt – Cano is probably the best defensive second baseman in baseball. His hands and footwork around the bag are second to none and you want to move him to third? I’m sure A-Rod can play short still because he’s just that good of an athlete but he should definitely stay at 3rd base.

  538. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Almost Brandon, almost.

  539. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Jeter would be perfect at 2B except he may feel slighted. As he team captain it would be awesome if he initiated a position change. Don’t think it would happen though.”

If Ripken switched, Jeter can switch. That’s what I would hope for there.

  540. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

such a frustrating power hitter you are Betemit. :x

  541. Pedro

Now there’s good ol’ Betemit with the weak K.

  542. Jorge Steinbrenner

    “suggest line arrange(is better)
    YANKEES (59-50)
    Jeter SS
    Damon DH
    Abreu RH
    Rodriguez 3B
    Nady LF
    Betemit 2B
    Giambi 1B
    Cabrera CF
    Molina C
    Mussina RHP”

i don’t agree with moving Giambi. A-Rod doesn’t get anything to hit if Nady’s behind him. Nady’s a nice little player, but he’s not going to make pitchers afraid that he change a game with one swing.

other than that….sure! Jeter doesn’t have to hit second in my lineup.

  543. JB-Playoffs here we come

I actually think it would be kinda cool to see Arod back at short…Considering he was like some Superstar right?

  544. Matt

“Fan Favories” Melky and Jeter are the two worst at bats in this lineup. Even Molina makes the pitcher throw 4-5 pitches every time up there. For this same reason, nothing will be done and Jeter will continue to kill our rallies in the 2 hole.

Any other player and Melky would be on the bench, Jeter would be hitting 7th. But that’ll never happen as long as they’re “fan favorites.”

  545. Whiff (Cano's bat)

Rosenthal just said he thinks the Yankees will be going for both CC and Tex this offseason.

Rosenthal is an idiot who spews headlines for effect rather than journalistic quality, which is why he works for Fox.

He knows less than Tim McCarver and that is pretty bad.

  546. romine

I dont see the diffrence of putting jeter in 2nd, the only diffrence from ss and 2nd is you dont need a strong arm. balls will still get past him with his range especially if we have someone like giambi at first. If jeter moves hes probably gonna go to the outfield or first.

  547. BBFan

    Cano should bat behind AROD.
Giambi should move down to 7th after Nady to maintain R, L,R,L,R….

  548. pat

A-Rod said he wouldn’t want to go back to SS again in an interview earlier this year.

  549. sunny615

is it worth batting jeter second anymore? He’s a GIDP machine and almost an instant rally killer. I don’t know who to replace him with, but he’s been killer more often than not.

  550. 86w183

Jeter moving makes sense, but there aren’t many 6′3″ 2B in baseball for a reason. That’s a lot of body for turning the pivot and to start learning it at age 34 1/2 (next spring) makes no sense at all. Nor does moving A-Road back to SS just as his range would inevitably begin to decline.

IF/when the Yanks have an improvement at SS Jeter should go to LF or CF where his excellent arm and superior ability to track the ball in the air would be most useful. Cano is right where he belongs.

In three years the Yanks should be able to bring up a choice 3B prospect and move A-Rod to 1B, unless of course Teixiera is in the way!

    Now let’s win THIS game

  551. Proposal

    Jeter
    Damon
    Arod
    Nady
    Abreu
    Giambi
    Cano
    Pudge
    Melky

  552. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Any other player and Melky would be on the bench, Jeter would be hitting 7th. But that’ll never happen as long as they’re “fan favorites.””

I can deal with a bit of Melky hyperbole, but you have ZERO concept of Yankee history. Jeter is not a “fan favorite.” He’s an automatic member of Monument Park when he’s done.

  553. anthony from the bronx

besides a 6 week stretch about the end of May till the midlle of June Giambi has done nothing. Why does he have to bat 5th?I was in favor of Giaridi getting the job but i am really disapointed in the job he has done so far.He has not been pro ative like I thought he woulb be.Seems to want to be like Torre to much.Where is the fire that we all know he has?

  554. TKinDC

    Just a blog-wide FYI -

Ripken moved from SS to 3B at age 37.

  555. Jorge Steinbrenner

enjoy the rest of the game, folks…

  556. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

You could deal with guys like Melky if guys like Giambi did their job.

  557. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

i don’t agree with moving Giambi. A-Rod doesn’t get anything to hit if Nady’s behind him. Nady’s a nice little player, but he’s not going to make pitchers afraid that he change a game with one swing.

I absolutely agree w/ that lineup except for Betemit and Molina being in it (I know as an example) but chances are teams are not going to pitch to Arod so the next guy needs to produce w/ RISP and Giambi’s .204 w/ RISP doesn’t do that… Nady’s .316/.382/.442 effects the SP decision w/ Arod more.

  558. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I’m with starting Jeter first. Worse that happens is that the table doesn’t get set as quickly. Best that happens is that there are fewer immediate and probable GDIPs.

  559. JJ

    “Cano at 3B
    A-Rod at SS
    Jeter at 2B
This should be done possibly even this season.”

    In my opion:
    Cano at 2B is fine.
Agree A-Rod at ss.(A-Rod is better)
    Jeter at 1B.

  560. drewsky

    lackey and lester

  561. BBFan

Unless he is forced, Jeter will not move from SS until his contract is up. His numbers look good at SS, but they will look bad at every possible other position for him (1B, corner outfield). That will have an impact on his bargaining power.

  562. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

It’s not the journey, it’s the destination?????

    Uh, no.

  563. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

Lackey and Lester makes sense – Lackey is in the building and Fox (like NESPN) will use any excuse to mention the red sox

  564. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Rock on Moose

  565. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Guys, even if they moved Jeter they probably wouldn’t touch him till his contract is up anyway.

  566. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Everything will be fine. God is a huge Springsteen fan.

  568. TKinDC

    “I’m with starting Jeter first.”

Well – if you have ever seen Jetes his – his swing dumps a ball into RF.

Leading him off would negate Damon’s ability to hit to all fields.

  569. BBB

“IF/when the Yanks have an improvement at SS Jeter should go to LF or CF where his excellent arm and superior ability to track the ball in the air would be most useful.”

I agree with this logic. Just because short may not be the best place for him anymore doesn’t mean you should waste his athleticism sticking him at 1b, which is where many suggest he should go.

As someone else brought up though, Jeter has no power for a corner OF, so we would have to be getting above avg offense/power from another position to compensate.

  570. S

    Dude.

    Jose is killing it.

  571. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

wow, Molina did some damage to his former team.

Looks like Molina is really energized against his former team.

Girardi should start him tomorrow :)

Abreu .592 SLG w/ runners on
Arod .526 SLG w/ runners on
    Nady .310 w/ runners on
Giambi RUNS INTO A HR EVERY NOW AND THEN
Cano he might get more run production w/ Stache’ infront
Pudge whatever he can do is a plus
    Melky (eh )

Did Molina just go yard :?

  581. pat

A few days off did Jose alot of good.

  582. PJH

hahaha, I love Jose. I knew he was going to hit against his former team. But he triples my expectations by homering!!!

  592. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Is there any coincidence that Molina is playing and the Yanks are winning?

More like Mussina and him got a thing going on. And a rested Molina has more energy to play then a tired one. Again Pudge can only help him more because playing Molina everyday would hurt him.

  593. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Moose so deserves to have a 20-game season this season. I hope the team makes sure that it happens.

  594. mel

Nice day for Molina against his former team.

  595. BBB

Absolutely, Trisha. He got him for nothing! Just a total non prospect who had tested positive for PED in the minors. I still can’t believe the Angels helped us out like that. The only positive thing theyve EVER done towards us, lol.

  596. Mike Housman

    Whiff,

I hope Rosenthal is right and we sign both CC and Tex – we certainly need them.

The NYY have to move on from Giambi, Abreu and either one of Moose or Andy.

    1B – Tex
    2B – Cano SS – Jeter 3B – AROD

    Brandon,

That kills the whole Lefty, Righty, Lefty, Righty thing that Girardi has going on if you make that move.

  599. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Tex ain’t coming here, 10 year deal = HELL NO

But we’ll go after CC and warmup a jet for him.

  600. JR Yankees

Alright, I know some of you are going to jump down my throat here but what do you think of Molina protecting Arod in the batting order?

He is raking and after today, pitchers will fear him more than Giambi.

  601. BBB

“Weaver right there was so like “I did not just give up a home run to Jose Molina’”

I used to feel the same way when he would hit those patented game changing Jose Molina Doubles against us. “Jose fricken Molina?!” I’d say. “Really?!”

It’s nice to have the shoe on the other foot now. :D

  602. BBB

JR Yankees – Only in every remaining game vs the Angels!

    LMAO.

  604. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Oy, Tex, lesson number one: It’s always about the money.

  605. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    Brandon,

That kills the whole Lefty, Righty, Lefty, Righty thing that Girardi has going on if you make that move.

One can say the LR LR LR is what is killing this team’s consistancy in hitting.

  606. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Who knows where that’s going to be Mark?

You have plenty of time for Boras to tell you where it’s going to be!

  607. mel

Sounds like Angels and Yankees fit the bill for Teixeira. Boston won’t outlay that kind of money. Wait, he said he’s not in it for the money.

The Jeter and A-rod need to chat up Tex @ when standing at 1B.

  608. BBFan

    They just repeated Tex’s interview.
He did not say he needs 10 yr contract.
He said he wants to go to a place wehre he wants to be for 10 next years in a winning environment.
    They are two different things.

  609. JR Yankees

Meanwhile, McCarver just explained something I had been wondering for a while now.

    Paraphrasing:

Tim: “The reason pitchers want to keep the ball away from the fat part of the plate is to keep the ball away from the fat part of the bat.”

Joe: “Uh…umm…let’s check in with Rosenthal.”

  610. JJ

Why did A-Rod can’t hit on the team’urgent time?

  611. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Alright, I know some of you are going to jump down my throat here but what do you think of Molina protecting Arod in the batting order?”

My only thought on this one JR is that it is sad that anyone would ever have to preface a post that way! Who’s to say you are not exactly right no matter what anyone else has to say!

  612. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

No they don’t and I hope Teixeira ends up somewhere else seriously Yankee fans need to learn from the Giambi deal and know Tex is on the decline. We don’t need a 20 million dollar 1B.

  613. Rishi

just back – so it seems to me that with Pudge on the bench the offense gets it together?

  614. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

    Angels do very good scouting.
That is how thy beat up on Andy.

But, Mussina is really schooling them.
He is pitching unpredictable for them and keeping them unbalanced at the plate and getting easy outs.

  621. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

JR… Molina is like the pitcher in the line-up.. you hope the 8 hitter gets on base with 2 outs to make sure we don’t start with Molina the next inning

  622. Whiff (Cano's bat)

Meanwhile, McCarver just explained something I had been wondering for a while now.
    Paraphrasing:
Tim: “The reason pitchers want to keep the ball away from the fat part of the plate is to keep the ball away from the fat part of the bat.”

another John Madden moment for McCarver.

Ever hear Frank Calliendo do John Madden and how he always states the obvious but thoughts are incomplete..

    Fantastic!

?He said he wants to go to a place wehre he wants to be for 10 next years in a winning environment.

That’s a bunch of BS when Atlanta was starting to win they tried to extend him Tex turned them down to seek FA, this guy is full of it and if Cashman is stupid enough to spend 20 million for him then he deserves whatever criticism this offense gets in the future.

  625. Vince Black

I would agree with moving to alex to shortstop but i think its about 4 years too late.

I remember when first hearing about Alex possibly coming to N.Y., I thought wow, what are they gonna do with Jeter?

After about 30 seconds I slapped myself and thought no, what are they gonna do with Alex.

I think his range would definitely be affected, 4 years is along time.

    Would he do it? Probably
    Could he do it? Sure

He is in terrific shape, nobody works as hard as he does to maintain that shape.
And it could be successful, but in the middle of the season it would sure be tough.
He’s definitely got the arm, but the range might not be what it was.

Add to that …..Jeter is never gonna leave shortstop. He wouldn’t when Alex came here and I can’t see him doing it now.
Unless, and a big unless…….he slumps so bad offensively and defensively that he makes the “ultimate Yankees team Captain sacrifice” (to help the team) But I don’t see that happening either, he should have done that years ago.

I can see Kim Jones now……(whispering):
“Derek, Wow hard what it for you to make that sacrifice? Was that your idea?”

Derek: “Well, I’ve thought about it for awile and I thought we could put a better team on the field and have a better chance at winning.”

Kim(whispering): ” Well Derek that must of been a tough decision Wow , what a captain. Congratulations Derek.”

  626. mel

    JR Yankees,

A-rod doesn’t need protection. They throw the fastball, get into the pitcher’s count and throw him offspeed stuff while he sits fastball. He helps the pitcher out by trying to guess.

I wish he would go back to the see ball, hit ball approach.

  627. Whiff (Cano's bat)

So good pitching and good hitting can beat the Angels.

Use to take the same formula to be the Yankees.

  628. BBB

Also, I really don’t think that the offense is performing better because Pudge isn’t playing. Correlation doesn’t always imply causation. Furthermore, it’s likely Molina is playing so well because he finally got a few days off. So that is actually a point for Pudge being on the team, he gives our boy Molina rest and allows him to return to thriving in his natural role.

  629. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Wow, the commercial cutting into that? So not cool.

  630. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    We are winning today.

The Yankees are actually making a statement against the Angels, who were definitely the Yankees John in years past!

  641. Whiff (Cano's bat)

You guys are funny. Exactly right about ARod – showing up when it doesn’t count.

Which if you think about all his extra curricular life style is kind of odd. You would think that he would have trouble in the bedroom since it counts all the time.

He must be in there for foreplay and then when there is one last lap to go, he comes in, because by then it doesn’t count.

Cracks me up. That hit would have been good, thursday night, Friday night, last week, last month, etc.

If you’re not going to hit Melky, at least run down to first base on your strikeout. He would have beaten that if he didn’t stand there for 5 seconds while the catcher got the ball.

It’s one thing to slump, it’s another to not play hard in the process. Cano and Melky take the cake in that aspect.

    Floating this possibly dumb idea:
Sign FA Rafael Furcal for SS. Put Jeter in LF.
Do not sign any more position players to >5 years, so no Tex.
If CC doesn’t come to Yankees, think lefty Oliver Perez.
Tex stays in LA where his agent is.

  674. blackdragon905

Lost in all the offense, is a wonderful pitching performance by Moose. How many has he sat down?

  678. stuart

man the angels SS are ver yathletic.. proof the angels are a very good team is they got maybe 5 hits yesterday and are doing nothing again offensively today but they still won 1 game.. good teams steal games because there opponent makes mistakes.. the late 90’s yankee teams did that all the time…

lucky for 4 HR’s else Betemits defensive issues would really be hurting

I would rather have Ben Sheets than Oliver Perez. Sheets is a much better pitcher but with his injury proneness, you could get away with signing him to a similar deal (at least in years if not money) Perez would get.

Get a life, Phil. You don’t like it, don’t post and leave. I don’t think anyone will care less.

  745. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

A-Rod can’t move to short…he doesn’t have the range anymore.

umm no he actually still can, the only reason he doesn’t is because Jetes is over there right now.

  746. Timmy Lupus

CC in for the 9th in ATL going for another complete game.

  747. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Rebecca, thanks.

I hope this carries over enough that we do split. With Molina catching I actually think we have a shot, though of course Rasner’s personal catcher has been DFA.

  748. harrison

Rasner can give us 5 solid tomorrow.

  749. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

    who they kidding?

    boston will definitely miss manny.

  750. vin

“How don’t you know Joe Buck and McCarver? And you post on blogs? Are you kidding?”

So what if he/she doesn’t know Joe Buck and Tim McCarver… that sounds like a positive to me.

  751. michelle b formely of sf now of oakland :-)

you know its a weird day when i agree with what tim mccarver is saying…Hey all..looks much happier around here today, although the first few posts through mussina’s 2nd inning there was a little bit of doom and gloom.

  752. Onesy

Our best SS is playing 3b. That’s obvious.

  753. Onesy

Yea, Boston won’t miss one of the clutchest hitters in the game. the guy who almost never fails when it counts. Nah. Never.

  754. vin

Nice work by Veras, yet again. He definitely seems to have begun to turn the corner in his career.

  755. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Even with the lead, the board is permeated with negativity.

Are you kidding me? This is nothing. Try being around here on computer night at Bellevue hospital.

  756. BWH

Ah, that’s right. I recognized the voice (and the inane “insight” on baseball), but couldn’t think of his name. Thanks!

  757. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Michelle a little bit? Cripes it took about ten minutes to get through an inning and a half’s worth of posts!

Wow Veras looked so good there.

This has been an outstanding game for the Yanks. But for a run, yesterday would have been remembered the same way…

    ;(

  758. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

    then who plays 3rd?

don’t care what anyone says. 3rd base = most difficult position in baseball.

  759. Nick

It doesn’t strike you as weird that someone who takes the time to post on blogs doesn’t know who McCarver and Buck are?

    Fox’s #1 announcing team??

The two guys who have been calling Yankee playoff games for a decade?

    Makes a total sense.

  760. Vince Black

    “nice clutch strike out alex”

I guess he should homer everytime up. What idiots we got here.

Wow not even the sarcasm gets you guys, but I guess it does prove a point.

  761. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    LOL SA.

So much padding, not enough walls in the rooms.

  762. vin

All in all, I think moving Manny was a good move for the Sox, simply because they weren’t going to pick up his option(s)… but it absolutely changes the complexity of their offense. Manny and Ortiz were the type of consistent hitters that could/did win games on their own… and if the rest of the hitters were hitting well… then that was what made their offense so unstoppable at times.

  763. Chuck Love

“don’t care what anyone says. 3rd base = most difficult position in baseball.”

You don’t have a clue. SS is the toughest position to play because of range and athleticism and arm needed. 3b is all reactions.

  764. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    BWH, no problem.

    :)

While I agree that the Sux will miss Manny’s bat, this is how much they were willing to give it up. I read that they took a vote of the players and only Ortiz voted to keep Manny!

    Ouch!

  765. JWagg

It sucks, doesn’t it Jim? I live in North Dakota, so I’m stuck with the Brewers, the Tigers, and the Twins every weekend on FOX, but I couldn’t care less about any of those teams…

  766. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

“You don’t have a clue. SS is the toughest position to play”

    nope. 3rd base.

  767. Neil

If Sabathia signs elsewhere, Cashman may want to consider the steady Jon Garland if the Angels don’t sign him.

  768. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Unfortunately VB, with the amount of idiots in here who do seriously believe things like that, you need to specifiy when you’re being sarcastic sometimes.

  769. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

There really shouldn’t be any debate about this Alex is the best SS on that field, his range at SS was near amazing, it probably still is, at 3B he has to limit his steps and react that’s a huge differenc, not only that but reading the ball off the bat is tougher from there that’s why the impressions of him turning to SS appear not to look good but if they were to move Jetes to another position and Alex to SS this team would get defensively better. Jetes in LF and Nady in RF..Jackson in CF for the future closes up alot of holes.

  770. JR Yankees

    Trisha:
I believe YES does have a postgame show even when the games are on FOX. You should be good.

  771. Vince Black

“A-Rod can’t move to short…he doesn’t have the range anymore.

umm no he actually still can, the only reason he doesn’t is because Jetes is over there right now.”

    Precisely.

  772. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Maybe not everyone bothers watching FOX baseball!

It’s not a crime for someone to forget the broadcast team you know.

  773. DD

You cannot say trading Manny is a good move for Boston. We all know what kind of hitter he is and the fact that he thrived in Boston should not be downplayed.

  774. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Thanks JR. That is one postgame I will be sooo happy to watch! And then Baseball Tonight too.

    :)

  775. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“Our best SS is playing 3b. That’s obvious.”

I agree with the other poster. I think that A-Rod has become too big to “successfully” play SS. I think he could do it, but he wouldn’t be as good as he was when that was his permanent position.

  776. Jim S

JWagg I’m in Memphis, and it’s usually the Cubs and Cardinals. Never get the Yankees on Fox, but surprisingly almost always get the NY Giants thankfully.

  777. Vince Black

“Unfortunately VB, with the amount of idiots in here who do seriously believe things like that, you need to specifiy when you’re being sarcastic sometimes.”

I hear ya, but sometimes the old reverse psychology works on the haters.

  778. Timmy Lupus

According to my cable box Yankeeography is on at 7est. No postgame show is listed. But it might be Fubar’d.

  779. pat

No YES postgame after Fox broadcasts except for Sox games usually

  780. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

DD – do you understand that nobody wanted him on the team anymore? They traded away players and picked up his salary! And nobody knew what to expect from an unhappy Manny.

They obviously did not trade Manny because they thought he was a terrible player.

That said, they will certainly miss that kind of bat in their lineup, the good Manny, and they will also miss the protection he provided for the fat one in front of him. That’s probably why Ortiz voted for him to stay!

  781. vin

“If Sabathia signs elsewhere, Cashman may want to consider the steady Jon Garland if the Angels don’t sign him.”

I couldn’t agree more… I’m a sucker for having consistent pitchers in the back end of the rotation… Garland, Washburn, Byrd… the types of guys who can prevent the over-stretching of the bullpen, and allow the team to focus on acquiring the best 3 starters possible.

Quality #4 and 5 starters get you to the playoffs… great #1-3 starters enable you to win in the playoffs.

  782. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“Jetes in LF and Nady in RF..Jackson in CF for the future closes up alot of holes.”

It may, Brandon, but I don’t see Jeter’s ego letting him move off SS.

  783. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

At the beginning of the season when Jeter was hurt there was suggestion that A-Rod should play short to cover for Derek.

Alex said he could not do it.

  784. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Welcome back Bruney!

  785. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    BRIAN BRUNEY SIGHTING

  786. vin

Bruney’s back!!!! which one will show up?

  787. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“That’s probably why Ortiz voted for him to stay!”

Has it been reported that Ortiz voted for him to stay? Their description that the “veterans” said he had to go didn’t name names. I assumed that Ortiz was asked and said keep him, but you can never be too sure.

  788. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

That too big excuse to me is BS.. I really can’t stand hearing that as a reason. can Alex crouch yes, can he stay at the balls of his feet yes, can he keep the glove down, does he get more time to read the ball off the bat yes, his range to the right is above average to the left w/ slow grounders also above average..

    BRUNEY’S BACK :D

Anyway the only problem would be pop ups which alot of SS leave that the 3B or OF most of time. Again he wouldn’t miss a beat at SS.

  789. Jim S

now I get the Yankees in the 9th.

  790. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

It may, Brandon, but I don’t see Jeter’s ego letting him move off SS.

Then he’s not a team player.

  791. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Laura, one of the guys (on another blog) who lives in NJ told me it was reported somewhere in the Ledger as well as in one of the Boston papers that Ortiz was the only one who wanted him to stay.

  792. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“Alex said he could not do it.”

That’s right, Rebecca. I forgot about that. However, I have to wonder if Alex was just being careful not to ruffle DJ”s feathers. What if he did play there and was phenomenal? Can you imagine how the papers would have handled that? I wonder…..

  793. JWagg

Well, at least we get to see Bruney’s return… You’re lucky, I always get the Vikings and the Bears, and I’m a Packers fan.

  794. vin

There’s no way Jeter wouldn’t be open to changing positions… my thinking is that the team needs to approach him about it before it becomes the elephant in the room that no one is afraid to discuss.

  795. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    come on Bruney. 1 more

  796. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“now I get the Yankees in the 9th.”

    Better late than never!

  797. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    that’s some BS

  798. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

So happy to see Bruney back! Did he get a nice hand? I was out feeding the birds and squirrels in my back yard. It was really cute to me at first but now they own me. Once you start providing their nourishment it isn’t fair to stop, even though they obviously know how to provide for themselves. Heck I spend more on bird feed and critter feed than I do on my own food. That’s the truth!

  799. vin

wow, first hit since second inning…

  800. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“Laura, one of the guys (on another blog) who lives in NJ told me it was reported somewhere in the Ledger as well as in one of the Boston papers that Ortiz was the only one who wanted him to stay.”

Oh, okay. Can’t say that I’m surprised. Ortiz strikes me as a loyal guy. He seemed to really like Manny. Plus, he knew that Manny was key to his success. I would have said keep him as well if I were him.

  801. A-Cod

Moose had a day. He just should not pitch against Baltimore.

  802. TKinDC

    Go BB – one more!!!

  803. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    WHAT WAS THAT?????????????????????????

  804. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    OH COME ON !

  805. Buck & McCarver

And so ends Day Two of Manny being away from Boston. Incidently, the Yankees were victorious over the Angels, by the score of 8-2.

  806. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Those are our Yankees!!!!

    :) :) :)

    See you for tomorrow’s win!

  807. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Mike Mussina is now 14-7.

How many of you thought we could write that sentence this year?

  808. TKinDC

Book one for the good guys!

    Great job by Moose!!!!!!!!!

  809. DD

    trisha:

You don’t let the team control your player personnel decisions. They have dealt with him for 5+ years. They couldn’t deal with him for 2 more months? He does this every year and it never hurts the bottom line.

  810. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“And so ends Day Two of Manny being away from Boston. Incidently, the Yankees were victorious over the Angels, by the score of 8-2.”

Laughed my ass off on that one!!!!

  811. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Great win

    Let’s go Detroit and Oakland.

  812. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Such a frustrating team :x We should have won last night … it would have been 2 out 3 .. WELCOME BACK BRUNEY ! :)

  813. stuart

this pen is so deep it is great..

they have no junk in the pen.. think about it they have Melancon and others till in the minors.. this will not be an issue next yr…

there defense has the 3rd fewest errors in the league but it is misleading .. they do not get to enough balls and they almost never make a spectacular play, statistics can be misleading…

good win take any win they can get.. the oriole 7 – 6 loss and last night hurt….

they need to steal some wins and hit with RISP>>>>>

  814. yanksince57-kennedy/aceves/next?

so i guess tex was the star of the game?

  815. Wanderer

Reason #1 why Cashman should never listen to fans. The getting rid of Jeter crap here. You people are as dumb as bricks. #2 moving him down the order.

  816. Laura - Every game is a must win game!

“You don’t let the team control your player personnel decisions. They have dealt with him for 5+ years. They couldn’t deal with him for 2 more months? He does this every year and it never hurts the bottom line.”

True, but this year was slightly different as Manny was even more of a jerk than usual. I don’t think that the players turned on him before, but they must have this year. That was the breaking point.

  817. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

DD, I am in the heart of RSN, or close to it, so I get to hear a lot more about the Sux than I would ordinarily care to. Believe me, they had had it with Manny. Plus for quite a while a lot of people actually believe that Manny’s acting up was an orchestrated attempt by him to get himself traded.

Remember that he changed agents this year and Boras was not going to get any commission if Manny stayed in Boston and had his option exercised. You know Boris is the spawn of Satan (remember the PR nightmare he got Arod involved in), and Manny is as dumb as a stump. With Boras’ help, the Sux decided that enough was enough.

  818. Andy

Only stuart can take a great win and turn it into something negative. Way to go, stuart!

  819. yanksince57-kennedy/aceves/next?

BTW name the 12 yankees on the opening day roster who are not currently in uniform!

  820. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“so i guess tex was the star of the game?”

    !!!

  821. Blargh

I’d love to sign Jon Garland
Though I hear that he’s a west coast guy, so it would take a fair amount of overpaying to lure him to New York.

  822. DD

    trisha:

I really don’t care. You defend Igawa. I hesitate to take what you say too seriously. Sorry.

The Sox will miss Manny. Just a fact of life. Or have you not watched the past 5 years?

And why is Boras “the spawn of satan”? Because he does his job well? Stop buying the spin from the owners and press. The players are stupid. They make their own decisions and aren’t lead around by “the devil”. Boras is the best for a reason.

  823. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“BTW name the 12 yankees on the opening day roster who are not currently in uniform!”

Great win! Nice to see Moose back on track. :)

  825. Timmy Lupus

Fox just called Moose a future hall of famer. Probably the only thing they’ve said that I’ve ever agreed with.

  826. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Reason #1 why Cashman should never listen to fans. The getting rid of Jeter crap here. You people are as dumb as bricks. #2 moving him down the order.

Hey either read entire posts or don’t reply at all.

No one is say to get rid of Jetes, we said moving him off SS should be done sooner than later(not this season), moving him out of the 2 hole to leadoff is smart because it takes away his GIDP spots and opens up the 2B hole for Damon to get base hits instead of robbed hit.

  827. mark

Can Rasner get us the split?

Or better question… can our offense get us a split vs. Lackey?

  828. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“I really don’t care. You defend Igawa. I hesitate to take what you say too seriously. Sorry.”

    :D

Oh is that what it is DD.

Well you’re wrong on this one. Live with it.

  829. Hester

    Garland or Sabathia or Sheets?

Is that even a question? We need top of the rotation guys. Haven’t we learned our lesson by now?

You don’t spend 12 mill for 4-5 starters.

  830. stuart

12 yanks not on team right now from opening day..hughes. ipk, wang, traber, hawkins, jorge, ensberg, matsui, gonzalez, kyle, and 2 others…

I can look them up but I am too lazy…

  831. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    OK mi gente hasta orita.

  832. Wanderer

Brandon you are reason #3 why Cashman shouldn’t listen to fans.

Move Jeter off SS and drop him in the order?

Now I have to accuse you of being dumb as a stump if you actually believe this.

And ho hum, if Boras were the best, he wouldn’t have had players dumping him after the Arod horror show.

    But believe what you want.

    Now, see ya.

    I am happy…

    relax..

BTW they are never letting Jeter go so that is not happening, they do not treat there franchise players like the sux do……..

  837. Yankee Trader

    Great job by Bruney, handling
    the hear of their order.

Question on the August waiver wire. Is it just the 25 man active roster or the 40 man club roster, in which the player must clear waivers to be traded.

Let’s say Mark Kotsay goes on waivers, not picked up in NL and Yankees get a chance to claim him. The Braves want to trade him and want Britton. Does he have to pass thru waivers also to make that deal??

  838. yanksince57-kennedy/aceves/next?

will cc still be alive at fa period?

  839. stuart

I am against Garland be ing signed.. CC or nothing.. He is durable and K’s a lot of guys.. garland is a good sinker ball pitcher but give up to many hits and is 2 yrs older then CC….

Win tomorrow and split the series. Just hope they remember to score some runs. Oy

  842. Blargh

Garland’s 10 months older than Sabathia

Of course, go for CC first. But if that doesn’t pan out, I wouldn’t mind Garland as a #3 that can be slotted into the 4th or 5th slot.

  843. JR Yankees

    opening day roster forgot Pettite

Pettite was on the DL to start the year

  863. Alfred E. Neuman

The final score, Jekyll & Hyde 8 and the Angels 2.

  864. Aaron

ok he had one single today, and grounded into a DP and last night, the guys been killing rallies and can’t get on in the first inning. One day won’t kill him. You guys are all over Melky and Cano everygame..admit it.. Jeter’s having rough times and needs a day..

u guys blame every player BUT Jeter.. It’s ok to blame him once..

  865. Eric

“Those two could actually, ya know..improve. The case is not closed on them. I didn’t realize Jon Lester did not struggle at all…”

Lester had CANCER. I think anyone who has watched games knows Kennedy is a back end guy. Hughes may be a top guy but his stuff hasn’t really impressed. I thought his fastball would be better and he has no 3rd pitch.

  866. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

LOL That is true Jim. :P

  867. Aaron

and Betemit had a 2 run home run today also, which im sure no one gave him props for.. 95% of you people on here, are the most fake yankee fans i’ve ever seen.. ure all pathetic, shouldn’t even be fans..

  868. Boxy

“ok he had one single today, and grounded into a DP and last night, the guys been killing rallies and can’t get on in the first inning. One day won’t kill him. You guys are all over Melky and Cano everygame..admit it.. Jeter’s having rough times and needs a day..

But Aaron LOVES Jeter! Troll. Have fun with Jed Lowrie.

  869. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

The Pavano, Hughes start has been delayed because of rain the tarp is off and the expexted start time is 7-45 carl pavano will start and is warming up

  870. Lance

Boston without Manny just won’t be the same team.

Doesn’t help that their pen is terrible and the rotation has become average.

  871. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Lester had CANCER.

Yes, we know and it was horrible. Great for him for battling back from that.

So again, I didn’t realize he has been perfect with no struggles at all while pitching for the Sox.

Meanwhile other young pitches are not allowed to have any struggles at all..who knew. All hope..is lost.

  872. Aaron

    BOXY

what the hell are you talking about? i said give the guy one day off,lol.. calm down, i didn’t ask pete to take you’re blogging ability away. you’ll be ok

  873. Jim S

I forgot Pettite was hurt and they started a 4 man rotation. Oh well. This is totally off topic, but do the Yankees ever acknowledge their 2 years as the Baltimore Orioles before they moved to NY in 1903? I was thinking of getting a 1901 Orioles hat and a Highlander hat to confuse people.

  874. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

Great win for the Yanks today-perfect for Old Timers’ Day…

Moose was stellar…he should get around 10 more starts or so for the rest of the season…

    20 wins is still a possiblity…

    Let’s Go Yanks!

  875. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

u guys blame every player BUT Jeter.. It’s ok to blame him once..

Have you not noticed that people have been blaming Jeter?

  876. Mark in CT

No real Yank fan wants Betemit to play SS ahead of Jeter. Even if the Cap had one leg in a cast hes better at Short than Betemit.

  877. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

the guy needs a day off obviouslly the way he’s hitting and not getting on.. so calm down.. who else are you gonna put at SS, there is no other option.. you guys will be ok for one day, I promise..

  878. Boxy

Aaron, troll someplace else. We don’t need your anti Jeter crap here. We are all in a very good mood. Trolls like you can’t ruin it.

  879. Q Bert

Lester has been fantastic this season. Hughes/Kennedy have given us exactly nothing. It is why we are trailing Boston right now.

  880. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Where is Hughes pitching tonight?

  881. Matzo

I don’t expect Oakland to beat Boston in Fenway.

  882. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

    Boxy, your cracking me up..

I’m in a good mood too, but all I’m saying is he needs ONE day off.. ONE, not a replacement like all you guys want a new LF,CF,RF,3B,2B,1B,DH,C everyones complained about all those positions except for 1.. ok, so get off your high horse for one minute and look into reality.. he’ll be ok with one day off..

  883. pat

    Aaron

In the next week, Jeter will get a day off. Yanks don’t have an off day for weeks and Girardi will rest players.

  884. Kell

Hughes is forever on a rehab assignment. The guy can’t stay healthy.

  885. Jim S

Another off topic question, I’m a history teacher and this deals with the Mets. Didn’t they originally try to mix the Giants and Dodgers? Why is their new ballpark all about remembering the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the NY Giants are forgotten about?

  886. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

I understand what your saying Pat, but BOXY thinks Jeter is Cal Ripken and can’t take a day off.. lol..

  887. pat

    Tigers chipping away. 4-2 Rays

  888. Onesy

And Bay goes yard. 5-2 Boston.

  889. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

alright you bloggers enjoy your night on the blog..why not go out for a bit and have a beer or 4.. or just sit here and type while your wife is hanging by herself in the living room, doing you kno what to herself bc ure on the blog..

    GO YANKS!!

  890. Boxy

Aaron is a troll. Go back to Boston Aaron.

  891. Jim S

    I hate Oakland right now.

  892. Alan

Rasner has to out duel Lackey tomorrow.

  893. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they’re talking about)”

Is this crap for real? Being lectured on commenting by someone who comments like they’re texting on their phone?

And Aaron, people who write blogs, are bloggers – i.e Peter is a blogger. People who comment on blogs are not what you call bloggers.

  894. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Will Dana Eveland get out of the 1st inning?

  895. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

omg I leave for 5 minutes and the soxs score 5 runs. And why does Jason Bay have to be so successful right away for them. UGH!

  896. Boston Sucks

Bay can hit all of the 3 run homeruns he wants. He’s no Manny.

  897. OLD Timers Day

  898. ANSKY

    Rebecca:

“Mike Mussina is now 14-7. How many of you thought we could write that sentence this year?”

Certainly not I, thats for sure. Way to go Moose! Maybe he has 10 starts left. Let’s say he wins half of them ….. that would make him a 19-game winner. Wow.

  899. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

im more of a Yankee fan then you are Boxy, u idiot..

  900. JR Yankees

Eveland only threw 46 pitches in the 1st inning. Don’t worry though, OAK is gonna fight back and win that game.

Regardless it is only August, we cannot be scoreboard watching already. Come September, we can start watching out backs.

  901. Aaron(wishes people watched the game and not blogging the whole time, so they know what they're talking about)

Angel what does that mean? on my phone? am I supposed to be offended bc im not using proper english in a blog??lol

  902. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Johan is throwing a perfect game.

  903. Stan

Seems Pete goes to Bruce concerts more often than the Padres can get a win. That’s where all his money goes!

  904. Dembore

Bay can hit all of the 3 run homeruns he wants. He’s no Manny.

Perhaps the single stupidest thing I’ve read on this blog – and that’s saying a lot.

  905. YankeesTech

  906. YankeesTech

  908. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

  912. Buzz

2 blow outs by tampa and boston F&^*

  913. Phil

Brandon: it doesn’t sound like you’ve ever played or coached baseball…so here is a quick lesson: you need mobility to play SS. A-Rod even said so, himself, that he wouldn’t feel comfortable there and has changed his body type. Get a clue.

  914. Yankee Lover

Unbelievable but true in our lifetime. Molina goes 3 for 3 including a homer. Betemit homers.
Stat of the day. 10 of Giambis 20 homers this year were homers that put the Yankees ahead in a game.
Very hard to figure this game out.

  915. YankeesTech

You guys could hear the game on the minor league website.

  916. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

OK, I have no confidence in Oakland, but Detroit? Score some runs pls.

  917. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Well it appears we will not gain any ground on either Tampa or the soxs. The other teams have bums pitching.

  918. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Anyway, just a quick question cause I stepped out for a sec earlier when Nady was PH for – it was just a precaution b/c the game was well in hand and he was out yesterday with the soreness, right? Didn’t get hurt or anything?

  919. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Detroit *can* start putting up crooked numbers at any moment, but it doesn’t appear they want to help us out today…

  920. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

Christian Picnched hit for Nady when the game was out of hand

  921. Nuck Noston

AL pitchers will figure out Jason Bay’s hitting weakness in short order.

  922. Andy

Way to show up tonight, Oakland.

  923. Boon

Brandon obviously hasn’t seen how big Alex has gotten in the past 4 years. He’s not a SS anymore. He was going to have to move to 3b eventually. The sooner the better for his career.

  924. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    thx Cano Cannon.

Good god, Detroit’s pitching is awful. Where are the rocket scientists that actually picked this team to win the WS? Didn’t John Kruk say they had the best lineup in baseball history? lolz.

  925. Kansas Jayhawk

100% of pitchers out there would rather face Bay than Manny.

  926. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

    Pavono Through 2— 2 Innings, 1 Run, 4 Hits, 2 K’s, 0 Walks, 1 Run

  927. j

tampa and boston may be winning, but minnesota is not :)

  928. pester

Det has a great lineup. In 2003.

  929. Wright

“tampa and boston may be winning, but minnesota is not :)

I’ve seen Minny play. They are not WC contenders. It’s 3 teams for 2 spots.

  930. Munchkin

    Pavano is a joke.

  931. j

lackey vs rasner tommrow if im not mistaken? i checked lackeys stats and we have hit him to a tune of a 4. somethin era. perhaps we end this series on a strong note like we did vs the redsox and then we sweep the rangers with our best pitchers going. i have to assume pettite joba and moose all start vs texas.

  932. R23

How didn’t the Mets get another arm and a bat?

  933. Eric

You can’t plan or assume sweeps on good teams on the road, j. No matter who’s pitching.

  934. j

regarding pavano, he will probably get an incentive laden contract next year at the league minimum.why dont the yanks buy him out and then sign him to one of those one year, deals and see what happens?

  935. Bellaire

We need to get to Lackey early and often tomorrow. Send me a message to the Angels.

  936. Phil

    j

Cause they have no respect for him?

  937. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

Pavono Through 3— 3 Innings, 1 Run, 5 Hits, 2 K’s, 0 Walks, 1 Run this was most likly his last inning hughes will pitch next

  938. j

look at guys like thomas and sosa who signed one year incentive laden deals. they each hit 30 homeruns and contributed.

  939. Kell

“regarding pavano, he will probably get an incentive laden contract next year at the league minimum.why dont the yanks buy him out and then sign him to one of those one year, deals and see what happens?”

My vote for dumbest comment of the day.

  940. will

well at least minnesota is losing. Now we just have to beat boston when we play them… and grind through the angel’s games at splits. tomorrow is a must win game

  941. j

has anyone else noticed that melky has been hitting the ball much harder lately. it has not translated to more hits yet, but if he could go on a hitting streak here, that would be great.

  942. Kell

“look at guys like thomas and sosa who signed one year incentive laden deals. they each hit 30 homeruns and contributed.”

This may be dumbest comment #2. Thomas and Sosa are Hall of Famers who could still play.

  943. dazzler

j quit while you are ahead.

  944. RhapsodyInBlue

Charleston Riverdogs leading the Greenville Drive 2-1 after three, starting pitcher for Charleston is Carl Pavano.

    Pavano-3 innings, 5 hits , 1 run, 1 er, no BB, 2ks.

  945. j

how many times have we seen someone who has not contributed to a team during the duration of a contract and then sign one of those one year deals and then have a carrer year. they usually need to preform well to get another big contract.

  946. j

my case in point. loiiazia for the cws in 2003 had a one year 500k contract and went 21-9.

  947. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Hughes just entered the game.

  948. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

Hawkins enters the game for the astros while hughes enter the game of the dogs and pavono trew 45 pitches 33 for strikes

  949. j

    im watching hawkins now. :)

  950. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

Hughes first 2 pitches were 98 and 97 mph

  951. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Announcer thinks if he continues to do well, that he will be back with the team in the ‘blink of an eye’ said he was hitting 93 his last start.

Apparently the radar gun is very wrong. Showing 98, 97 mph.

    Infield single, on a curve.

  952. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Nice diving play by Austin Crome (possible double).

  953. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Now it is 94 mph

  954. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Steal off of Hughes, guy got his first steal of the year.

  955. will

    This bizarro world?

  962. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

struck out on 97 mph fb outside corner. 2 so in inning.

  963. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

This is very bizarre Hughes doesn’t throw that hard.

  964. zellyanks91

I have watched Phil pitch for a long time now..and he was never reaching 97-101 mph. Is it the gun or is this for real? What is going on? haha. I am listening to the game on the radio as well & I am confused.

    Kevin

  965. Pat M.

Good to see Phil getting some lost love tonight….He’s going to be a factor in a few weeks….

  966. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--10-5)

wow is this the real Phil Hughes fastball or just a radar gun errer

  967. Alan

Hughes cannot break 94. Please don’t spread rumors like 100mph fastball.

We have all seen him pitch.

  968. Matzo

    The gun is obviously wrong.

    Come on.

  969. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Alan, we are only repeating what they are saying on the radio! They can’t figure it out either. Pavano was hitting 94 on the gun. So if the gun is off by 4 than Pavano was only hitting 90.

  970. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

97? that number can’t be right for Philthy?

    But go Phil!

  971. other guy

You can’t rely on Hughes. He takes the summer off every season.

  972. Pat M.

The jugs must be off, he tops out around 94-95

  973. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Oh Hawkins. :(
Let’s see if he gets out of this

  974. Wilson

Hughes has a lot on his shoulders. But that load has been lessened by Joba being an ace level starter. Now the weight of the team and organization isn’t on his shoulders. he can be a solid #2 which is what i think he will be.

  975. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

other guy August 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm

You can’t rely on Hughes. He takes the summer off every season.

    Oh please

  976. kev

    Pavano hits 90 tops.

    Hughes hits 95 tops.

  977. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    So someone juiced the gun.

  978. other guy

Have you seen him pitch a complete season yet? Hughes is suspect til he gets off these innings limits which BTW he’s never reached.

  979. Buzz

if hughes throw 100mph how much does joba throw 500mph?

  980. zellyanks91

Honestly…you don’t need a 100 mph fastball to be successful in the majors. Sure, it helps..but look at Farnsworth..he throws 100mph but he sucks…his fastball is as straight as a string. We all saw Phil pitch in the low 90’s earlier in the season. At the same time..he had a fractured rib and had eye problems. Don’t bash me..because I am not making excuses for his bad play..just saying. I wouldn’t be surprised though if he is throwing harder than before. I doubt he is throwing 97-101mph though. I wish Phil the best of luck and I hope he can make it back to the big league club as soon as possible. As long as he throws strikes..and locates his pitches, he should be fine.

    Kevin

  981. mark

How did Joba end up in Charleston?

I know the Yankees probably sent him to Arlington a day ahead of time, I guess he is throwing an inning in Charleston.

  982. kev

I really hope and pray that Hughes and Joba and all these other kids are taking advantage of watching and talking to and being teammates with Andy, Mo and Moose. You cannot ask for better people to learn from.

good question on the radar gun he can probly hit 107

  984. Matzo

Hughes throws 100? Want to play 3 card monte??

  985. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Krazy Kyle in to pitch the bottom of the 8th for Detroit

  986. Matzo

“I really hope and pray that Hughes and Joba and all these other kids are taking advantage of watching and talking to and being teammates with Andy, Mo and Moose. You cannot ask for better people to learn from.”

    Great point.
Mo seems to have really helped Veras and Edwar.

Rasner has to have picked up something from Moose.

And they all have to see how AP battles.

  987. Ken

Nik Turley signed by the yankees. Great signing

  988. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Announcer said he checked, and they said the gun is accurate.

  989. Eric

    I don’t get TB-Det on Extra Innings.

  990. Eric

“Announcer said he checked, and they said the gun is accurate.”

Does it matter? We know Hughes doesn’t throw 100.

  991. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Announcer said he checked, and they said the gun is accurate.

I still think that gun is a wee bit off, but if not..whoa.

  992. blackdragon905

ken, what’s the scouting report on Turley?

  993. Ron D

I don’t think that Joba 500mph is off by much if we use the Charleston gun.

  994. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Hey Mo had it happen, why not Hughes?

  995. Ron D

The announcers must know. That gun must be correct. Now prepared to be shocked when Hughes is throwing 94 in 2 weeks in NY.

  996. RalphieD

brandon laird is putting on a power show for us

  997. Bart

I am so anti any lineup with Bettemit – especilaly with Jose as well (needed for Moose and defense) – and here the two of them get 5 hits and two HRs. Jose’s first in forever.

we needed two of thois hits an a HR yesterday.

But great job today and Moose bounced back from the debacle — Rasner unfortuately throws the same velocity and location as Moose without the Knuckle curve — it will be extra tough tomorrow — but I thought Moose would have it tough today folowing BP Ponson (I know no runs but they slapped and slugged the ball all over the park)

Bettemit will get another day – but needed to get Cano’s hand well – he was so on fire when he hurt it.

  1020. Alan

I got to say. When the Mets lose they really tear the hearts out of their fans.

1021. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

lol jennifer-true. Some of the calls might be amusing.
There also might be some screaming-watch the ears! :P

  1022. Matzo

Santana would be 15-4 on the Yankees.

1023. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

got no idea, that’s just dumb for their part.

  1024. not fair

just more evidence to show how misleading the Win stat is for a pitcher

  1025. zellyanks91

first off..I would like to say I am no expert..and I am not really sure..but signs point that he should be back soon. The way he is pitching now..I could see him getting the call back up sometime in August..probably late August.

I wonder what Johan must be thinking, you think he is questioning waiving his no trade to go to the Mets. How many games has the pen blown for him?

9 straight by Hughes. Threw 3 2/3 innings, they are very impressed.

Another no decision for Santana. Something tells me Wagner’s not one of his favorite teammates.

1033. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

It was something like 54 with 33 strikes.

1034. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

mel, dont you mean the whole Mets’ bullpen? 8) lol

  1035. JR Yankees

No way Santana would have 15 wins if he were with the Yankees…not with this offense on most nights.

However, our bullpen is a lot better than the Mets’ pen.

1036. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    thanks jennifer

  1037. Chelo

You know the minor leaguers arent happy to see Phil Hughes back there again lol, We all know he can dominate the Minors lets hope he comes back and dominates in the majors. Btw i dought he hit 101mph but 95-97 is not that far fetch, i saw him pitch in the minors and he was sitting 94-97 that day, at least on the trenton gun.

  1038. not fair

look on the bright side (for the mets), at least the bullpen limited the 9th inning damage to fewer than 5 runs, like the last time they blew a santana win. this is a small improvement.

  1039. Blargh

The Mets offense is better than the Yankees offense by 0.18 runs a game (prior to today’s game)
And that’s in the league without DH…

    Johan has no luck, huh?

  1040. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Which bullpen is in more dire straits, Boston or NYM?

1041. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

I have a feeling Billy Wagner won’t be on Johan’s Christmas card list this year.

  1042. Kell

For Hughes it is not about results. it is about how his arm feels, arm strength and location. Results are a bonus.

  1043. Tex

“No way Santana would have 15 wins if he were with the Yankees…not with this offense on most nights.

However, our bullpen is a lot better than the Mets’ pen.”

Our offense is good enough for Moose to win 14. The pen wouldn’t blow any of these leads for Santana. Hughes has a lot to live up to when he comes back.

1044. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Hughes hasn’t thrown 100 mph since early H.S. tryouts I choose not to believe the 97 mph until I hear from other sites. No way, if he’s hitting high 90’s jesus must have touched his arm.

  1045. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Kell–Results do tend to give you an indication of how he’s feeling, though.

  1046. Blargh

Ladies, who’s the cutest Yankee now? Xavier?

1050. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Xavier is a total cutie

  1051. not fair

Here are some of Santana’s numbers in Wins, Losses, and No Decisions:

    Wins (9 games): 2.70 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 3.67 K’s per walk, 7.92 IP/HR

    Losses (7 games): 3.35 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 3.00 K’s per walk, 9.13 IP/HR

    No Decisions (7 games): 2.60 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 2.67 K’s per walk, 9 IP/HR

Look at that, his stats in No Decisions are very comparable to his stats in Wins. And his stats in his Losses are pretty nice as well except for that WHIP. I mean, most pitcher have terrible numbers in their Losses. Moose’s ERA in Losses this year is 6.62. Pettitte’s ERA in Losses this year is 8.14. Wang is at 6.14. This applies to elite pitchers as well. Peavy has a 5.03 ERA in his losses. Webb has a 7.48 ERA in his losses. Sabathia has a 6.94 ERA in his losses. Hamels has a 4.91 ERA in his losses. Lincecum has a 5.68 ERA in his losses. Beckett is at 4.61.

Johan has a 3.35 ERA in his losses. That is crazy bad luck.

  1079. Jorge Tabata

I’m sure they’ll be quotes tomorrow from Cashman, Various scouts, Austin Romine (his catcher tonight), and even Hughes himself confirming the validity of those velocity reports.

Even if it was juiced slightly, he was still touching high 90s. I mean, the gun can’t be 5-8 MPH’s off, 1-4 maybe.

  1080. Joe Mama

wouldn’t it be something if after all the Yankee pitchers were so happy to see Manny go, he ended up smashing bombs against them in the World Series

1081. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

congrats Rebecca, your opinion ended up on the newspaper. 8)

  1082. Kell

Agreed. Hughes looks healthy. And even if he’s not tossing 100mph he’s throwing hard. Which is nice.

  1091. Guiseppe Franco

Hughes cannot throw 100 MPH. I don’t care what that gun said.

He can reach 96 MPH when he’s feeling strong and everything is going his way, but he usually sits around 92-94 MPH.

Frankly, if he can locate it – that’s more than good enough to get major league hitters out.

Don’t buy into that radar gun or you are going to be very disappointed when he gets back to the bigs.

1092. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half!

hey rebecca, i exactly know what you mean. friday night’s game was just really pathetic. ponson pitching a 2 hit shut out through 7 innings, it only happens once in a lifetime.

Look at the results of 6 of Santana’s past 10 starts:

vs. ARI – 7 IP, 0 ER, 10 Ks (ND – Pen gives up 5 runs in last 3 innings, Wagner blows 2 run 9th inning lead)

    vs. SEA – 7 IP, 5 R, 1 ER (L – Grand Slam to King Felix)

@ PHI – 8 IP, 2 ER (ND -Came out after 95 pitches with the game tied, Sanchez gives up walkoff to Feliz)

vs. PHI – 8 IP, 2 ER (ND – 4 BP arms proceed to give up 6 runs in the 9th inning)

    @ HOU – 6.1 IP, 1 ER (ND – Wagner blows 2 run lead in 9th)

  1096. mel

I’m assuming Brandon Laird is related to Gerald Laird.

    How’d we get Brandon?

  1097. buzz

    he`lifted`weights?

  1098. GreenBeret7

Yeah, Brandon, and, that gun is about 3-5 MPH, as it always is. By the way, the two homers by Laird were absolute bombs to left center. The park is set up like Fenway with a 38 foot high wall in left. They went well beyond and about 75 feet high by game reports. By the way, Snyder is playing second and hitting, but, he’s no infielder. Angelini will probably moving up next spring, but, clearly has a lot of rough eges. Austin Krum will make a good 4th outfielder for somebody (good glove/bat) but, doubt that he can play center field. Ortiz is going to be good, either setup or middle relief. De La Rosa is just great for a first full season as a pitcher. He’s going to move fast. Left handers that throw hard are rare, but, this guy has the really good fastball, knee buckling slider and the only two with changeups as good as his in the Yankee system are Ramirez and Ortiz (Bugs Bunny changeup).

  1099. GreenBeret7

    ***rough edges***

  1100. mel

Carla was pitching in the same game. What was he throwing?

Wouldn’t it be poetic justice if they were both ready to pitch in the Bronx and Hughes got the call? There’s no way I showcase Pavano at this point.

  1101. GreenBeret7

Mel, Brandon is Gerald’s younger brother (20 yrs old). Moved from 3rd base to 1st base and playing some really good defense for his first year there. He was dafte last year. Pretty swing and a ton of power.

  1104. mark

would you guys start joba on short rest tomorrow? we need the game..

  1105. Betsy

really don’t see why it matters if the 101 is accurate or not. The fact is, even if the gun if 5 or 6 miles off (which is a lot), then Phil still hit 95/96. The best gauge is not the radar gun, it’s the fact that MLB scouts were taken aback by his velocity, and I can guarantee that they were using their eyes, not depending on a gun.Still, there is no way I would rush him. No matter what the Yankees’ needs are, Phil’s future development comes first. He was already rushed one time – better to play it safe.

  1106. GreenBeret7

No way do the start Chamberlain on short rest.

  1107. mel

Thanks, GB7. I wonder why he wasn’t a catcher like his brother. Two real bombs today, huh?

BTW, what’s everyone’s opinion on Teixeira? Is he going to get a 10 year deal? I doubt it. Only Alex gets those kind of deals.

“would you guys start joba on short rest tomorrow? we need the game..”

I remember when the organization refused to start Wang on short rest in Game 4 of the 06 ALDS. Seeing how Wang was 26 back then there is no chance in he ll that Chamberlain starts on short rest this entire season including playoffs.

  1118. GreenBeret7

My pleasure, Mel. Laird and Montero have hit some real bombs in Charleston, this year. Deep fenses to left field and the winds usually blow in off of the river. Not sure why they didn’t try catching switch, other than the Yanks have about 4-5 really highly rated young catchers about the same age. First base was and is a dead zone in the system. One issue with most of the top of the line young hitters coming through the system is that they are right handed.

  1119. GreenBeret7

  1120. Petino

“would you guys start joba on short rest tomorrow? we need the game..”

No way. You don’t do that with a young arm. Also, the Texas offense is a potent force. We’ll need Joba to shut them down.

We also need a win on Monday. So it doesn’t matter if you shuffle the rotation, Rasner still gets a turn. Game on TBS.

    Tidbits from mlb.com recap:

Robinson Cano said he doesn’t expect to be in the lineup Sunday because of a sore left hand. … With Saturday’s win, the Yankees are 6-1 following a shutout. … Jose Molina’s home run Saturday was his first against a right-handed pitcher since Sept. 14, 2006. … Reliever Jose Veras has struck out seven of the last 11 hitters he’s faced.

    JR: Don’t worry, I’m okay.

  1138. mel

  1139. #9

“They showed Willie’s intro at the old timer’s game a couple of times. It was very heartwarming.”

Kay introduced him with “Once a Yankee – always a Yankee – Willie Randolph!”

  1140. Yazman (David)

Even with his post-AS resurgence, Cano’s ranks among regular 2B this year:

    OPS: 17 (our of 19)
    OBP: 18
    BA: 14
    SB: 17
    Runs: 16
    2B: 10
    HR: 8
    RBI: 7
    BB: 18
    SLG: 14

Only stat in which he ranks highly is SO — he has the 2nd fewest strike outs of any regular 2B.

  1141. Lolala

Strikeouts aren’t even an important stat anyway. He probably averages close to the fewest pitches seen per at-bat, so it’s not surprising.

  1142. GreenBeret7

Mel, I look older than my age of 19. My dad had to have me buy his because he didn’t have an ID card.

  1143. DFox

I don’t get why you would start Joba on short rest… Forget about the young arm stuff, what would it achieve? Is there really a must win game with 50 to go? Also, it would be showing you have absolutely no faith in Rasner.

I mean like if there was one game left in the season and you had to win it, starting him on 1 day shortened rest would make sense.

  1144. TKinDC

    Yaz =

Let’s review this at the end of the year ok? Other than Chase Utley there is no other 2B I’d rather have in the league and frankly I wouldn’t trade them heads-up at this point in their careers.

Cano is a 2nd half player – he’ll get his numbers before it is all said and done.

  1145. Yazman (David)

    TKinDC,

I’m with you, hopeful and rooting for Robbie every step of the way. I think he can be awesome.

I just thought he’d fought his way back to the middle of the pack already, and was sad to see that’s far from true — so far.

  1146. head cold

Boy, I really need to take some NyQuil!

  1147. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Guys, I think the apocalypse is upon us

Barry Zito is pitching a three hit shutout.

  1148. Umbrella

Cano is going to need a huge finish to make his numbers seem impressive.

Last year on August 2nd, he was already at .303/.344/.475
He hit .314/.372/.515 the rest of the way to bring his overall numbers up to .306/.353/.488

Right now he is at .260/.295/.388. I don’t think he can do it.

1149. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Here is a short video clip of Phil and Pavano pitching tonight:

    http://tinyurl.com/5phjwo

  1150. TKinDC

“Boy, I really need to take some NyQuil!”

w/ that list? Sounds like you’ve already drank the entire bottle. Dustin Pedroia? You can have that little ferret and I’ll take Robbie any day of the week.

  1151. Back Bench

I’m sure I’ll get slammed for this, but Tim McCarver said that to a man, the Yankee pitchers all wanted Molina behind the plate when they are on the mound. McCarver also noted that Molina has the best “feel” for how the batters are performing during the game and adjusting the pitching accordingly of any catcher he’s seen.

No SBs for LAA today. Last year, we were all agonizing over how every team was stealing Moose blind. He must feel like a tremendous weight has been lifted off his back.

So how is it that Pudge comes in and immediately makes Jose the back up catcher?
I’ve heard the ‘better offense’ story repeated over and over. It seems to me that having the right in-game calls made, the opposing running game effectively shut down, and someone who knows when to lay down a bunt in the right situation is worth more than a 0.040 improvement in the possibility of a hit.

  1152. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Back Bench: It’s not just that.

jose has never caught a full season, never more than 71 games in a season, so there’s considerable concern about the physical toll it will take on his body.

I think that has more to do with it than anything else.

  1153. TKinDC

“No SBs for LAA today. Last year, we were all agonizing over how every team was stealing Moose blind. He must feel like a tremendous weight has been lifted off his back.

Moose only gave up 2 hits and 2 BB’s – That seems like a good formula for minimizing SB’s :)

Pudge is a first ballot HoF catcher even with the steroid cloud over his head. Molina has never been an every-day catcher. Both seem to be very good at throwing runners out but Pudge in his prime was the best defensive catcher I’ve ever seen.

  1154. 34hughes

hughes probably changed to his old delivery thats why he is throwing hard

1155. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Thanks SA that does look like Hughes was hitting upper mid 90’s tonight.

  1156. mel

Very nice recap of the old timers game. LOL @ the Negron/Stengel story. They also mention how Willie would’ve gotten the biggest ovation.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1

  1157. steve

where is pete? i cannot sleep until i know hughes’ velocity!!!!

  1158. NoNoGo

Jose Molina is a terrible hitter. His putrid bat has been a big part of the offensive problem. Pudge ain’t what he used to be, but he is still much better than Molina. And these pitchers were quite fine in previous seasons without Jose Molina as their catcher. Molina is a nice guy to have as a backup catcher, but if you need to him to catch even 3 games a week, it is a big detriment to the team. That’s why Cashman made the trade. It was a no-brainer.

1159. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Hughes has new mechanics in that video

  1160. E-Man

    Lay off Pudge.

It takes more than a game or two for a catcher to learn a pitching staff.

  1161. McLovin

Okay Pete I Bruce Springsteen isn’t that great to not have a update for 8 hours.

  1162. mel

    Thanks, SA, for the vid.

FWIW-the narrator said Phil hit 101. Even if it’s 5 mph off, it’s encouraging.

  1163. mel

Sorry, that should be the story mentioned how *Bernie* would’ve gotten the hugest ovation. If he had, like, showed up.

  1164. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

If Pete went to Foxboro, and he lives close-ish to the Stadium, it’d take him a few hours to get back from the concert.

1165. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

SA seriously thank you for that video, seriously he has a new stride in that motion he could have very well hit high 90’s tonight. PETE GET BACK HERE ALREADY ! :x

  1166. mel

This recap really captures the essence of the Molina/Moose battery.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=280802110

1167. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    No problem!

Seriously, we need an answers regarding ‘Hughes-was he really throwing 101?-gate’

Probably not 101..but still. He looks good

  1168. Redding

Ponson did have his best outing of the season w/ Pudge catching…

He’ll be fine. Nady was hitting .090 on Tuesday. Now he’s at .286. Pudge will do the same.

  1169. GreenBeret7

PA said last night that he had the weekend off, before the West Coast trip and somebody else would be looking in on the children.

  1170. mark

mets should go for k-rod at the end of the yr… their BP is a mess.

  1171. GreenBeret7

SA, Hughes wasn’t hitting 100+ MPH tonight. The radar guns in Greenville are jacked up. They don’t draw, so it impresses the fans. I’ve been there and other parks in the Sally League, and the board radar doesn’t match the scout guns. Usually about 5 MPH too high.

  1172. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

GB: Even so, 5 mph means that Phil was hitting 95, 96.

1173. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Oh I realize that GB7.
    It probably wasn’t 101-more like mid 90’s

But hey, ya never know. :)

  1174. GreenBeret7

Rebecca and SA, that would be his limit, I’d think. Greenville was clocking De La Rosa earlier this year at 100 MPH. He’s tops 94 and maybe 95 with a strong tailwind. As long as the ball was moving in and out, up and down, 94-95 MPH with control is plenty good enough.

  1175. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    GB: Exactly.

1176. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

GB7 since you go there alot that pitch to David Mailman on the video I remember hearing the announcer saying he striked out on a 97 mph pitch looking. So again IDK I don’t go to Greenville games but I heard alot of scouts were impressed.

  1177. GreenBeret7

If you guys are in Florida next spring, and, most likely around Trenton next summer, these young kids here in Charleston will really get you excited. A lot of talented bats and pitchers. Montero, Angelini, Suttle and Betances are still aways off, though. Laird, Ortiz and De La Rosa could move fast, though.

  1178. mel

    mark,

Why did Ken Rosenthal say he’s almost positive that K-rod will not re-sign with the Angels?

  1179. Yazman (David)

Great point, Rebecca. Phil in the mid-90s (especially at this point in rehab) is awesome news.

BTW, anyone see how AJax is really coming on?
    http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....pid=457706

I’m a big Melky fan but it’s good to have options…

  1180. #9

From Chad Jennings’ SWB excellent blog:

“I think Coke is one of the breakout prospects in the system and will probably be added to the 40-man this winter.”

  1181. Clare

    Mel,

Because KRod wants 5 years at 15 million a year. Ken said there was no way the Angels would give him that.

  1182. GreenBeret7

I wasn’t there, either, Brandon, but, they have impressed the announcers and tey mentioned that the scouts are really excited about both Pavano and especially Hughes. The speed was impressive, but the control and movement is what they are especially happy about. In Hughes two games, in 6.2 innings, he’s thrown less than 90 pitches combined.

  1183. steve

Joe Girardi is hitting .313 (5-16) with a double and HR in his career against Mike Mussina

  1184. mel

    Clare,

Thanks. Personally, I can’t stand the guy. But he is a good closer. I did hear Fox mention that the Angels had someone in mind to close if Frankie leaves.

When does Wagner’s contract run out?

  1185. GreenBeret7

Francisco Rodriguez would be great setting up Rivera for two years and then taking over after 2010. He just might be receptive to that. Rivera’s his idol, and, then, Rodriguez being set up by Melancon, for three or four years would be perfect. It’s hard to imagine NYY paying 14 million a year for a setup guy, though.

  1186. mel

Another odd fact. Nady homered in his first and only AB in 2000. Didn’t get called up again until 2003. Pretty weird.

BTW, as nice as it was to see the bats show up today, it was really great to see the pitching get back on track yesterday and today. It’s been a brutal week for the pitchers after a wonderful month.

  1187. Neil

if pavano was throwing 92-93 we can probly say the gun is 4 mph juiced, cause one would expect him to be 88-89 coming off tommy joh. so if hughes was reported at 97-101, we can say he was at actually at 93-97. This would be a huge improvement to the 89-93 mph Hughes we saw earlier in the year.

Hughes sliding into the #4 spot after Mussina, Joba, and Pettite would be perfect.

1188. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Neil true but in start # 2 your expected to throw harder, Pavano was around 93 tonight, the Hughes thing only the Yankees would know that for sure. But if it was 3-5 mph off that would mean that Red Sox pitcher was throwing 84 mph and he wouldn’t be in the Sally league if that were true. Again I’ll go by the stadium people on this one. I respect GB7 but something was different tonight in Hughes stride, his finish even the velocity caught on video.

  1189. GreenBeret7

Like I said earlier, Brandon, I haven’t seen the videos of Hughes from tonight, but, if he found the glitch in his delivery, that would be great. My only concern would be this rib issue. If it happens again, look for it to be removed. Pavano, who knows? I do know that almost 100% of the pitchers coming back from Tommy John Surgery are clocked 2-3 MPH higher than before. All except for, surprisingly, Tommy John. John threw harder before and had a very good fastball coming up through the Cleveland and White Sox systems. When Frank Jobe and Robert Kerlan first recommended this surgery to John, they told John he might throw harder, so John asked then to put Koufax’s fastball in his arm. After surgery and rehab, John said he was upset with the doctors because they mistakenly put Mrs. Koufax’s fastball in his arm. Was great to see him today. A very funny guy. My grandfather played semi-pro baseball with his father in Indiana around Terre Haute and Shelburn/Sullivan coal mine leagues.

  1190. Kirby

There’s no way the Yanks are even thinking about K-Rod. Having two relievers each making close to 15 million per year is a huge waste of money. The team will need to spend that kind of money on either a starting pitcher or a bat, and those are both much bigger needs than another reliever.

  1191. mel

Found out why Nady had one at bat in 2000 and didn’t go back for 3 years. He went straight to the majors. Interestingly, he also had Tommy John surgery in 2002. If we run out pitchers, he might be able to take the mound. :)

  1192. Dan

Amazing…if it wasn’t for Josh Hamilton I’d say Mussina was a lock for comeback player of the year. Great season so far and great start here. A really stopper type performance.

  1193. GreenBeret7

Dan, Hamilton was a top NL rookie last year. He’s been back.

  1194. GreenBeret7

Cliff Lee and Ervin Santana will be Mussina’s biggest rivals for CPY.

  1195. Dan

You don’t think he’s going to be a candidate? That was a half season.

  1196. Dan

Well Cliff Lee deserves it more I have to say…

But even with that said Mussina has been a God send for us. I would have never believed he’d be this good, I don’t think anyone would have.

  1197. omega

I think Lee deserves it the most.

  1198. Kell

    Moose is the Cy Young

  1199. bru

one way the yankees can flip an aging team is let all the free agents walk, get a ton of picks for them, trade damon, matsui, sign sabathia.their 1-3 will be sabathia, wang, joba, fill out the 4th and 5th spots,dh posada, nady in right, get a younger left fielder, center fielder, first baseman, catcher.the pitching staff will be great, young and set for years.with a pitching staff that good and arod, jeter, cano, posada and all the prospects and picks the yankees have they can trade all of them to get a left fielder, center fielder, first baseman, catcher.they need only 4 position players and sabathia.go younger,a little cheaper but keep ajax, montero, brackman.the yankees are in a very good position going forward,i just hope they do the right thing and get an ace, left, center, catcher, first baseman, get younger while lowering payroll at the same time.the problem with the yankees that is very close to being fixed is that they do not have 3 great pitchers 1-3.they are close to having great pitchers 1-5,very young also wich will lower payroll because joba, hughes are cheap, wang is reasonable.it will also take pressure off the offense and keep them competing for years, they will never use most of the pitchers in the minors with hughes, joba, wang and an ace in the offseason and possibly kennedy so trade them for the v4 position players needed.

  1200. Yankeefanfoev13

Joba to start first game in texas, should take 3/4 or possibly a sweep

  1201. Sally

What’s the story with Bernie Williams? Was he invited to Old Timers Day and declined?
