Game 111: Angels at Yankees

Peter Abraham
August
3

YANKEES (60-50)
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
A. Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Betemit 2B
I. Rodriguez C
Cabrera CF
Rasner RHP

Darrell Rasner (5-8, 4.92) vs. the Los Angeles hitters.

John Lackey (9-2, 2.93) vs. the New York hitters.

Notes: Thanks to Brian Heyman for calling in the lineup. … The Yankees are 2-4 on a homestand that ends today. They leave tonight for Texas and a four-game set with the Rangers. … Cano (left hand) remains out. … Rasner had pitched to Chad Moeller in his last few starts and shown some improvement. He’ll have to adjust to Pudge as Moeller was DFA’d when the trade went down.

The Angels will be without Torii Hunter, who is attending the funeral of his grandmother.

I hope Ivan and Rasner can adjust quickly. And btw, who wouldnt feel comfortable throwing to the 13-time gold glover?

  2. j

why is giambi still batting behind arod?

  3. gayle

I am hoping that Molina goes with Joba tomorrow they seem to have developed a good repoire with each other these past few starts.

If Pudge can work Rasner through the game like he did with Ponson I will be very happy

  4. vin

“Where the hell were the ghosts in the final two games of the 2004 ALCS? Pretty useless for inference running apparitions if you ask me.”

2004? ALCS? What are you talking about… there were no playoffs that year. Duh. :)

  5. Yankee Baseball

hopefully havin both giambi & betemit on the field does not lead to a replay of what we witnessed yesterday..Man only if AG was still around..Anyways best of luck against Lackey..we need to hit him early!! It would be something if we can split

  6. Back Bench

Equally important would be for Eiland to get Pudge on board with his effort to get our guys to go inside at the right time in an AB. Many have commented about how this has improved Moose and others.

One commentator noted that Pudge has called for pitches the same way Posada does – away, away, away..

  7. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Hopefully they find a way to win this game somehow.
Remember Yankees, it’s ok to score lots of runs nice and early.

  8. 86w183

vin— You shouldn’t be drinking this early.. there were no playoffs in 1994… 2004… Yanks up 3-0.. Dave Roberts.. Damon slam off Vasquez.. ring a bell?

I’m starting to think Girardi ran off 162 copies of the lineup for the first five spots… Giambi in the # 5 spot at this point is innane..

  9. bdog375

“why is giambi still batting behind arod?”

Aside from the fact that it keeps the lineup left/righty, the fact that Giambi is but a fraction of the player ARod is probably has something to do with as well.

  10. Scis

By this point, I’d be willing to bet Pudge has already caught one of Raser’s sides. If Rasner struggles it will be due to a lack of execution, just like Andy’s start. Pudge has been doing this for a long time, there isn’t too much out there from a catching standpoint that he hasn’t already seen.

  11. Yankee Baseball

gayle, who doesnt feel comfortable throwing to jose? , Joba pitches well no matter whos out there. It will be a joy for the two to catch each other.

  12. pat

I think when I looked a few days ago Giambi had the best numbers against Lackey and A-Rod the worst. Maybe that’s why he is still behind A-Rod today.

  13. vin

“vin— You shouldn’t be drinking this early.. there were no playoffs in 1994… 2004… Yanks up 3-0.. Dave Roberts.. Damon slam off Vasquez.. ring a bell?”

Nope, doesn’t ring a bell… none of it, I tell ya. I do recall once having a nightmare… something involving Bill Mueller and Keith Foulke. But that was just a dream.

  14. Yankee Baseball

Man this lineup lacks a 1-2 punch. I know its a little early and know we have a big shot at getting him in the offseason but Teixeira in the Angels? Im jealous..Well look at the bright side least we dont have to face their centerfielder today

  15. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

yeah i’ll back you up on that Vin

  16. bdog375

“I think when I looked a few days ago Giambi had the best numbers against Lackey and A-Rod the worst. Maybe that’s why he is still behind A-Rod today.”

When has ARod being the number 4 hitter been in question? Unless Jeter is leading off, A Rod bats clean up – plain and simple. He is the best hitter on the team (not to mention one of the best in baseball), and it keeps the lineup righty/lefty at the top. How can anyone think it should be otherwise?

  17. fleas (gardner races greyhounds)

Suggestion: Please move double-play Jeter from the 2 spot. Please, I don’t care if he is the captain or not, he has been horrible all year. Put anyone in place of him (other than melky).

  18. Laura - We've still got a chance!

“why is giambi still batting behind arod?”

Good question. Girardi is apparently one of those managers that believes that if you stick with something long enough, eventually it’s going to work. I disagree. I would have put Nady behind A-Rod. Forget that “left right left” crap. Giambi is killing this offense and needs to be moved down in the order.

  19. Yankee Baseball

bdog, it could be that some bats really have been cold..Giambi deff needs to shave that mustage, it doesnt look very good on a slumping player. Melky needs to turn it up a notch. When I see him in the field I think Ok maybe ot can translate in his Ab but nope! Also, A-rod is STILL looking to find his groove with men on base….

  20. vin

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....ree-a.html

First base doesn’t look like it can be filled via free agency if the Yanks pass on Tex (and I think they will). I do think Cash should sign Millar… that should be good for preventing at least 3 losses a year. ;)

I vote to deal Cano for an under 30 good glove/solid bat first baseman (Adrian Gonzalez – Conor Jackson type), and sign Orlando Hudson to play second. That should upgrade the offense, compared to this year and improve the defense. Plus add a little personality and edge to the club.

  21. Jay

Does anyone know if the Yanks can get draft picks for Pavano next year? He has not played this year at all. How does that work?

  22. bdog375

Ignore my previous posts. I thought people were arguing that Giambi should be batting ahead of ARod! I see now that they were saying Giambi should be batting lower in the lineup.

  23. j

i dont think we get anything. the draft picks are given only if the player is a type a or b free agent. type a i beleive is the top 15% in his position and type b is top 30%.

  24. EricVA

    Jay,

Definitely no draft pick for Pavano. The rankings are based on the past few years of play. Anyway, they’d have to offer him arbitration and he’d have to decline. You think Pavano declines a guaranteed contract from anybody at this point?

    Vin,

I don’t think they should trade Cano, but somebody really needs to get on his case about hustle. Maybe it’s because he’s been injured the past week, but he just looks like he’s playing in quicksand. Isn’t that what everybody thought Girardi would prevent?

  25. Confucius

“He has not played this year at all. How does that work?”

    Like this: we get nothing.

  26. Yankee Baseball

Ok Jeter lead off. Damon 2nd who usually works the count in front of A-rod who can take a look at better pitches to hit. Abreu 4th whos our top RBI guy..Nady 5th who has been hot as of late..Either Cano or Giambi then Pudge and Melky…Make sense anyone?

  27. j

actually we get something- his medical bills

  28. NYY

Roger Clemens is a free-agent in 2009? Is he going to pitch from prison?

  29. NYY

13 mil Club option on Pavano for 2009 and 1.95 mil buyout.

  30. Jay

Wasn’t some teams interested in Pavano before the trade dealine? They should have traded him for something. He is taking up a roster spot. Does not make sense.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Giambi really does need to be moved from the five spot.

  32. Laura - We've still got a chance!

The Yankees aren’t trading Cano so people need to stop suggesting that. It’s not going to happen.

  33. Buddy Biancalana

    Laura-

Did you believe the Yanks would ever trade Soriano?

  34. Neil

Regardless of whether Giambi has one last hot streak or not, his 2009 option of $22M will not be picked up.
The Steinbrenners are salivating with what $22M can do to upgrade for 2009.

  35. vin

    Laura,

I think you’re right unfortunately. Cano is a tremendous talent, but I don’t think his style fits the Yankees’ goals. He’s too streaky.. and when he’s not going good, he gives away at bats. That doesn’t help you get to the playoffs, and it sure doesn’t help you win in the playoffs.

  36. Jay

    Buddy,

Good point. I think if a good deal came along to get a good young CF the Yanks would trade Cano/Melky and call up one of their AA or AAA infielders and covert them to 2b. They have some good prospects in AA.

  37. 86w183

You sure about a Pavano option/buyout? That’s the first I’ve ever heard of it. If true and if he has the slightest hint of class he will play for the $ 1.95 after pocketing almost $ 40 mill for next to nothing.

I could live with a Millar/Miranda combo at 1B if that frees up $$$ for Sabathia. Still, the Yanks need a legit power bat behind A-Rod… maybe Adam Dunn to share DH/LF/RF with Damon, Matsui and Nady? Dunn taking shots at the porch could be scary even if he does hit .235 and whiff 145 times.

While the Yanks have lots of decisions to make regarding expiring contracts look at the Angels with Guerrero, Teixiera and K-Rod.

  38. Yankee Baseball

Cano brings the team so much life and is at best a .300 hitter who makes plays look easy on the field. Sure he needs a little kick in the butt to get him going but it does work. Just the other day he was working out with A-rod on the field with his defense..I dont think this organization plans to move out a player like Robby…Whyd they give him that extension for? Dont lose hope in him guys…

  39. Yankee Baseball

The melk man is a player I can see the Yanks trading.

  40. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

“I vote to deal Cano for an under 30 good glove/solid bat first baseman (Adrian Gonzalez – Conor Jackson type), and sign Orlando Hudson to play second. That should upgrade the offense, compared to this year and improve the defense. Plus add a little personality and edge to the club.”

Vin – I backed you up on the no playoffs in 04 thing but I can’t say trade Cano. He’s gonna be an all-star for a long time coming and he will get over his first month hitting issues, and even if he doesn’t, he’s the best defense second baseman in baseball

  41. Yankee Baseball

Vin you want to trade away an impact player like Cano for years to come for what? firstbasemens? OK thats why we lean to Teixeira in the offseason and pick him up, a way better overall player than any of the names you’ve mentioned without giving up our young second basemen!

  42. pete

buddy biancalana?? weren’t you coaching the amarillo dillas of the united league baseball???

  43. Phil

Great to see the normal lineup complaints from amateurs who have never coached, nor played baseball.

SJ: provide some common sense to these wannabes, please.

If you do your research, your posts won’t appear so ignorant, people. Look at Giambi’s OBP. Then stop your crying and contribute something productive.

  44. Coach Jay23

You guys are a joke, Cano is not 26 years old yet,and you guys wanna give up on him. Look around baseball and the stats of the other 2nd baseman and the only one Id choice over Cano is UTLEY and he is 4 years older.
    Roberts- only 1 .300 season

Kinsler- 1 .300 season and its this year and has 18-17-18 errors in his 1st 3 years

Uggla- .265 lifetime hitter has 123-167-116 Ks over his 3 years

Cano younger than all of them has 2 .300 seasons his errors are 9-13-8 and 54-85-35 Ks over the same period

  45. Doreen

I liked Soriano, but I never thought he’d be around forever, for some reason. That being said, the player he was moved for was…ARod. So, in that vein, unless a deal including Cano could bring back a superstar, why do it?

  46. Yankee Baseball

Phil, people were only giving their opinions..thats all! O yea and Cano is staying haters!!

  47. Blargh

Type A’s are in the top 20% of their respective position group (though I haven’t actually seen the list of the position groups in the CBA itself); type B’s are in the next 20%

  48. #9

Nice interview with Randolph by Kim Jones – Yogi’s advice to Willie on being fired by Mets:

“Aw – to hell with them.”

    Amen!

  49. Phil- 27 in '08

All: Please note, that is another Phil, not me.

It was great listening to Willie. He’s a class act.

  50. Yankee Baseball

doreen you’re right. I’d hold onto Cano unless the Rangers offer their center fielder Hamilton or Phils second basemen hah

  51. Dave In Sun City

    Phil,

Your arrogance greatly surpasses our ignorance!

Giambi’s OBP is not protecting A-Rod in the order ! Opposing pitchers do not quiver with fear of a Giambi walk behind A-Rod. His avg with RISP is worse than Molina for God’s sake !

Before advising other to do research perhaps you should reevaluate your position!

  52. Angel

“Did you believe the Yanks would ever trade Soriano?”

Soriano was traded for A-Rod though. How many players of A-Rod’s caliber are available to be traded for Cano? The ARod trade was also part salary relief for Texas. I doubt those teams with players that are near A-Rods caliber are looking for the salary relief of getting rid of their best players.

And if you’re thinking of trading Cano, wouldn’t that tend to imply his stock has dropped and he’s not worth that kind of player in return? Because most times trades like that go down with players of that caliber its because a team needs salary relief, which is hardly the case with the Yankees. And wouldn’t that also imply he isn’t worth the kind of player that Soriano brought in then?

  53. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

If anything makes me at least a little nervous it’s having Pudge catch Rasner. We’ve seen the huge disparity in Rasner’s ERA based on the different catchers, so having him throw to someone he’s never been with could end up being very tricky. We’ll either catch lightning in a bottle or Rasner could end up having a painful outing. I’m hoping that Pudge’s reputation of liking to call outside pitches doesn’t rear its ugly head throughout too much of the game, especially when Vlad is at bat.

A final thought. This isn’t rocket science so if anyone starts doing ridiculous analysis during the game that is totally contrary to this thought, I don’t care what forum “guru” it might be, please remember this baseball fundamental. When any pitcher is pitching without any runs on the board, he is not able to pitch his game but rather has to pitch in a much more cautious and controlled fashion, trying extremely hard to hit the corners. The more a pitcher does that, the more room there is for disaster. And the longer the game goes without runs, the harder it is for any pitcher.

So let’s hope that we get some quick run support.

Again – with no runs on the board, it is a lot more difficult for any pitcher to pitch a great game. If you can remember that and try not to flip out when one of our pitchers walks runners, gives up hits, etc., as the game goes on with no runs on the board, it will make the forum a much nicer place to be.

    GO YANKEES!!!

P.S. The exception, of course, is when a pitcher is so on his game that he is potentially working toward a no hitter. But we know those are just that – the exceptions.

  54. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Yogi’s advice to Willie on being fired by Mets:

“Aw – to hell with them.”

Aw. That Yogi is wise. :D

  55. stuart

Giambi may be moved out of the 5th slot but who would replace him??????

I am all for moving Giambi in the order but again who replaces him? Nady? Maybe? Cano the good Cano? Maybe

But again it is not cut and dry to move Giambi in the order.. I personally would move Abreu behind Arod since abreu is good with RISP and moving Giambi up because he is slow but has a high OBP…

  56. 86w183

    Phil—

It doesn’t make sense for you to question others’ judgements and then rely on the most overrated stat in baseball, OBP.

OBP is a good thing to have, but OBP does NOT score runs and it does NOT win games. Further, the slower a barerunner you are the less valuable a high OBP becomes.

In his last ten games Giambi is 7-33 with ZERO extra base hits, 5 walks and 13 strikeouts. Sounds to be like he’s earned a lower spot in the lineup. When your OBP is higher than your SLG (.316 vs .212) you don’t belong in the 5-hole.

  57. Angel

Is Matsui close at all to coming back?

  58. EricVA

Last time I checked, the purpose of protecting somebody in the order is so they don’t pitch around that person. So, we want A-Rod protected in the line up so pitchers give him pitches to hit and don’t walk him to get to the next person.

A-Rod has been getting plenty of pitches to hit. Nobody’s been walking him. In the last 7 games he’s gotten 9 hits and has walked twice. He doesn’t need better protection in the line up.

  59. EricVA

    896w183,

I almost fell over laughing reading the ridiculousness of your post. OBP doesn’t score runs?!?!??! Really? So magically the Yankees score all their runs on solo home runs?

OBP is extremely important, no matter how fast or slow you are. If you get on base, your team is going to score more runs. It’s really simple. You want guys on base so you can score runs and win the game. But your argument is that getting on base DOES NOT do either of these things. Amazing.

  60. Dave In Sun City

“When any pitcher is pitching without any runs on the board, he is not able to pitch his game but rather has to pitch in a much more cautious and controlled fashion, trying extremely hard to hit the corners.”

With this new tenet in mind I really wonder how Koufax, Gibson, et al managed to win with those fantastic ERA’s.

  61. Angel

I would have thought that the whole protection thing also stems from getting thrown better pitches for the #4 to hit, because even if you get the #4 hitter out, you still have to deal with the #5 hitter. This isn’t the case at the moment.

  62. Sean the Disabled Mess

I hate Sundays because the next day is Monday.

  63. EricVA

    Angel,

Yes, but you can’t make the case that A-Rod isn’t getting pitches to hit. Pitchers are challenging him.

  64. Buddy Biancalana

My point about Soriano in comparison to Cano about the possibility of being trade bait is that you never know. If the right deal comes along, you need to consider all options. I’m not advocating trading Cano.

Th I Rod deal fell into their laps.

  65. Angel

“With this new tenet in mind I really wonder how Koufax, Gibson, et al managed to win with those fantastic ERA’s.”

Because they were damn good HOF pitchers? :)

  66. EricVA

    Buddy,

You are right. Soriano for A-Rod was a great deal.

    Cano for Pujols?

  67. Angel

I’m not saying he isn’t, just that “protection” doesn’t necessarily just imply he’s getting walked significantly a la Bonds to get to the easy out either.

The guy has a .326 average, so its clear he’s getting hits and not being pitched around. The only factor that I might consider is the whole w/RISP thing. He’s aware of who is behind him in the lineup, and thinks he has to take care of business himself knowing that Giambi isn’t either, and thus his approach is different to his approach last year when Matsui was behind him for most of the year.

  68. Steve

Jeter is batting 331, and slugging 497 in day games this season… so hopefully we don’t get Mr. GIDP this afternoon

  69. Angel

The ARod for Soriano deal was a once in blue moon deal though.

  70. EricVA

I’m still waiting for somebody to come back and tell me that OBP is not important. Where’d 89w183 go?

Come on people. Just because you may not choose to learn or use statistics to further your understanding of the game does not mean they are useless or flat out wrong.

It’s all about familiarity. You all understand batting average because it’s been around forever. Try explaining BA to somebody who has no idea. It’s not as simple and straight-forward as you think. If I use OPS+ to evaluate a hitter or VORP or ERA+ to evaluate a pitcher, please don’t tell me I don’t watch the game. I watch a ton of baseball.

  71. Sean the Disabled Mess

I’m pretty sure the Red Sox draft players by how high their on base percentage is and when they look into free agency, I think, I’m not sure, but it’s possible they look at on base percentage more than anything else.

  72. Buddy Biancalana

    EricVA-

Ok, done! See how fast these deals can be made.

  73. george

why do people want to trade Cano? his defense is superlative.

his hitting overall has been excellent, though obviously you’d like to see him be more consistent. he’s got power, hits for average; he’ll never take a ton of walks, but his patience has improved.

he’s 26, and he’s on course to being the best Yankee 2B since Joe Gordon. let’s keep him around

  74. EricVA

    Buddy,

As soon as I become Yankees GM (any day now) and you get the gig in St. Louis I’ll call you!

  75. TKinDC

So if we have a lead (God willing :) )- who is pitching the 8th inning today?

  76. Buddy Biancalana

    Angel-

Yeah, that A Rod deal was once in a lifetime, funny he was almost on the Red Sox.

  77. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

BB I shutter to think what Alex and Papi would do on the same team :(

  78. Angel

“If I use OPS+ to evaluate a hitter or VORP or ERA+ to evaluate a pitcher, please don’t tell me I don’t watch the game. I watch a ton of baseball.”

I dont think there is anything wrong with using statistics to evaluate players at all. Just when you solely use them as the be all and end all. There’s something to be said for instincts too. That and far too many people on this board use them wrongly.

  79. GreenBeret7

TK, I’d give the ball in the 8th inning to that guy that throws from a strange side. I used to know what side it was called.

  80. JR Yankees

Marte will pitch the 8th. Also, I would imagine Edwar is more than available today.

  81. Ricky Bobby

Go Angels! We’ll take 3 out of four any weekend.

  82. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Oh for the posters that say Hughes never touched 100 mph your wrong he did in H.S.

  83. Sean the Disabled Mess

Maybe they’ll use Bruney in the 8th inning.

  84. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Brandon: even if Hughes is only touching 95, it’s a good sign.

  85. Sean the Disabled Mess

Ricky Bobby, who? What the? Where did you come from?

  86. TKinDC

“TK, I’d give the ball in the 8th inning to that guy that throws from a strange side. I used to know what side it was called.”

Yeah – I’m hoping that Marte settles in to the role. He seems like the natural pick for it.

For the first time since Stanton and Nelson I feel great about the pen – more depth in there than we’ve had in ages.

  87. GreenBeret7

TK, imagine what the Yanks could have done with this bullpen from 2002 thru 2007.  I’d guess at least 2 more titles and maybe three.  This bullpen has covered a lot of sins in the rotation.

  88. Buddy Biancalana

    TK-

More depth than when the Yanks the had Wick-Macher combo? JK

  89. YankeesBen

A-Rod hits are coming with bases empty etc, why walk him than. But with runners on he does not get good pitches cuz they know that alex will press knowing that Giambi behind him won’t come thru, i kind of like that idea of putting A-Rod in the 3 hole and abreu Clean Up with Nady behind him. Or keep the order as is and switch Giambi with Nady he gets a lot of hits.

  90. PJH

Everyone is wrong about the lineup because Phil is a baseball coach and he knows everything there is to know about the game, moreso than any of us on here so dont even try debating with him.

  91. 56Bomber

Newark Star Ledger saying that Vlad will not be in the Angels lineup today.

  92. E-Man

They really should switch Giambi and Abreu to try and get Jason going again and give Arod some protection.

I give up trying to understand Girardi’s thinking.

  93. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

The bullpen has been by far the best part of the team this year, which is all the more remarkable considering how weak it was last year.

  94. YankeesBen

So whats Phils take on the line up?

  95. stuart

edwar needs to get in a game.. he threw 1 pitch last outing and it has been awhile…

giese needs to be ready in case Rasner implodes.

Of course OBP leads to runs… SImple equation more men on base in the long term you will scoe more runs.. Not ver yscientific…Giambi is 2nd on the team in OBP……..

  96. PJH

Giambi has good numbers against Lackey.

  97. YankeesBen

Maybe switching Giambi and Abreu is good too, the main thing get him out of the 5th spot.

  98. Guiseppe Franco

I don’t trust Brian Bruney at all right now. He doesn’t have his command yet and he’s not the same pitcher he was early in the season before his injury.

He’s more like the 2007 Bruney night now. The one who can’t be trusted in a close game and still issues way too many walks.

He needs to get his mojo back before Girardi should start trusting him in big situations.

I’d also consider trading Cano if the right offer comes along. Not giving up on him, but I don’t think he’ll ever hit his ceiling.

He’s too inconsistent, has too many mental lapses, and often disappears for way too long.

  99. stuart

Yanks have very good pitching matchups against texas this week………..

    they need a sweep………..

  100. SJ44

OBP is not a one size fits all statistic.

OBP doesn’t help Giambi. If he was a leadoff or second place hitter, then OBP has more relevence to his game.

However, as a 5th place hitter, his job is to drive in runs. Getting on base via a walk, isn’t what this team needs in the five slot.

If they had both Matsui and Posada healthy and producing in the lineup, then “keeping the line moving” would be ok from Giambi.

That not being the case, he has to drive in runs. In that regard, he has been disappointing in that slot this season.

Hopefully, he gets hot sometime soon. More realistically, Cano (when his hand is ok) and Nady (if he continues his hot hitting) are probably better candidates to hit behind Arod at this time.

We have seen both Baltimore and Anaheim pitch around Arod w/RISP position (to get to Giambi) on this homestand.

If that continues, and Giambi continues to hit poorly w/RISP, Girardi will have no choice but to change the lineup.

I’m right here. You need to work on your reading comprehension bro. I wrote that a high OBP is a good thing, but it IS vastly overrated in terms of winning and losing. winning and losing comes down to scoring runs, period. Runs scored is the most underrated stat, just as OBP is the most overrated.

I doubt you would argue that scoring a lot of runs is bad, just as I would never argue that a high OBP is bad. But give me a guy who scores and drives in runs and you can keep guys with high OBP who may or may not score or drive in runs. It’s a great stat for fantasy leaguers and salary arbitration, but otherwise it takes a back seat as far as I’m concerned.

Bottom line… OBP is a great individual stat, but RUNS and RBI are team stats that impact winning more directly.

I actually love the new fangled stats because they add a dimension of context, especially on defense where older, traditional stats tell a small part of the story

  102. GreenBeret7

You’re right Rebecca. The bullpen has been an issue since 2002. They’ve been patching a rotation together since the end of 2003 when Pettitte, Clemens and Wells all left.

  103. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

soon GI Joe will realize he needs to move Nady up in the lineup and flip flop Damon to the #2 spot

  104. SJ44

Why would you move the hottest hitter on the team (Abreu) down in the order? That makes no sense.

Thankfully, Girardi doesn’t share your thinking.

  105. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

The human jinx Michael Kaye is at it again.

  106. Underdog

Can Rasner even survive through 3 batters?

  107. TKinDC

I sense Brandon is beginning to appreciate the x-factor a touch more than when the Delinquent got his walking papers to steel-town.

  108. GreenBeret7

Anderson, Figgins and Kendrick will be the big thorns, today, as usual.

  109. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

I sense Brandon is beginning to appreciate the x-factor a touch more than when the Delinquent got his walking papers to steel-town.

You sense wrong, I just want to see what his bat w/ RISP can provide instead of Giambi’s .200 AVG

  110. PBL

have any of you guys seen those new jeter “edge” commercials?

  111. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

When are we supposed to get word on Edwar’s appeal?

  112. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Those Edge commercials are ridiculous. I mean really, who here thinks that Derek drives a Ford Edge?

  113. yanksince57-kennedy/hughes/pavano ?!?!?

doom and gloom OR sunshine through the window?

  114. PJH

There are more Jeter edge commercials? I hope not. I dont whats more annoying, Jeter’s edge or Giuseppe Franco. Besides, I really doubt Jeter drives a Ford Edge.

  115. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

you can tell this is going to be a tough game already :(

  116. PJH

Rebecca, I don’t find Edwar very appealing, but, love his pitching.

  118. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

This might not be very pretty. Hope Giese wants to pitch today.

Over-under on what inning people start to blame Rasner’s struggles on Pudge?

My pick is the 3rd inning :)

  120. PJH

I could see it being 3-0 pretty soon

  121. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

  122. Angel

TK- I doubt Rasner makes it to the 3rd inning.

  124. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Over-under on what inning people start to blame Rasner’s struggles on Pudge?”

Not of course that there could be anything to that seeing that he had an ERA of over 9 with Posada…

  125. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Um Rasner. We need outs

  126. Ricky Bobby

Woo Hoo! Figgins owns the Yankees. Let’s see the old knock out punch in the 1’st inning. Is this guy a AAA pitcher?

    Nice.

You can put Jason Varitek out there and he’d still look bad. There is a thing w/ this guy if Moeller isn’t his catcher and it’s ridiculous because as a #5 spot SP you need to get the job done no matter who is catching or your gone !

  134. Pedro

This Rasner guy, he’s pretty good.

  135. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    Oy

  136. Sean the Disabled Mess

Does any one use Comcast as their cable provider that lives in the New York area? If you do, what channel “number” is the game on? Tvguide.com has tbs on channel 29 but 29 is not tbs.

  137. PJH

    Paging Phil Hughes/Ian Kennedy.

  138. SJ44

Get him out now before he gives up 6 more this inning. If he can only pitch to Chad Moeller, he can join him in AAA.

You just can’t pitch like this and stay in a major league rotation. He’s too afraid of the strikezone and he always gives up first inning runs.

2 runs to the first 4 hitters of the game with John Lackey on the mound? That gets to Scranton before another shot in the rotation.

  139. Ricky Bobby

    NNNNNIIIICCCCEEE!! Way to Go Garret.

  140. Jackie V.

As seen so many times, Garrett Anderson destroys Yankee pitching and nobody seems interested in adressing the problem. Why ???

  141. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

  142. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    …this is painful.

GI JOE get Giese warmed up now !

  144. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

yeah lets just keep throwing rasner out there every 5 days.. we’ll make the playoffs that way.

Have no fear, only John Lacky and his sub-3 era on the mound today.

That said we will still win, but this is ridiculous

  145. PJH

This game is pretty much over.

  146. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Actually “Ricky Bobby” Rasner had a sparkling ERA at the beginning of the season when Chad Moeller was catching his games, had an ERA that was out of sight with Posada, and had a much better ERA with Molina.

So to answer your question, no he’s not an AAA pitcher though he has pitched there.

And oh yeah, another “AAA” pitcher who pitched for the Yankees, Randy Johnson, also had trouble with one of the best catchers in the game, that would be Posada.

Finally fool, catchers coming to new teams have learning curves with their pitchers, and pitchers who have not spent a very long time in the majors, such as Rasner, typically don’t call their own games.

So you might see a bit of an adjustment period here.

    Does that help?

Get him out now before he gives up 6 more this inning. If he can only pitch to Chad Moeller, he can join him in AAA.

Exactly this crap about him pitching w/ an above 6 ERA w/ other catchers needs to improve or he should be DFA

  153. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

2 more outs. Please baseball gods

  154. Pedro

If we couldn’t hit Garland what hope do we have of hitting Lackey?

  155. SJ44

Darrel Rasner is a career minor league pitcher. He doesn’t get to choose his catcher.

If he can only pitch to Chad Moeller, his major league career will be very short.

This isn’t on the catchers. Its on a guy who simply doesn’t throw enough quality strikes to be any more than he is as a pitcher.

Unfortunate but, that’s why the Yankees need to score runs in his starts. Especially early since, if you look at his pitching lines, he always gives up runs early in games.

He’s just not a very good pitcher and when you lose a guy like Wang, its a big, big hole to fill. He can’t fill it.

No knock to him. Just reality.

  156. Jason Bay

I hope I get to hit against Rasner when we play the Yankees!

  157. Sean the Disabled Mess

Never mind, umm, ok, the game was on the Yesnetwork the whole time.

  158. Wander

We need to do something about Rasner, he isn’t cutting it anymore. Sure he gave us a decent start last start but more often than not he doesn’t keep us in these games.

If he doesn’t give us a decent start today you’ve got to consider calling Kennedy or Aceves up. Rasner needs to show some more fight for his spot.

  159. Mike

Note to Yankees: Rasner is garbage. Call Kennedy up.

  160. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Pudge is nursing him through this inning a bit

  161. Guiseppe Franco

Kennedy could find himself back in the Yankee rotation with a good start today for Scranton.

However, Rasner’s next start would be Friday against this same Angels team in LA – so I’m not sure that Cashman is going to want to throw Kennedy into that fire right off the bat.

They might elect to wait and pitch him the following week against MIN or KC.

  162. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

I was looking at some of the photos from the OTD ceremonies yesterday and a few of those guys looked like they could still play.

  163. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    THANK YOU PUDGE !

  164. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Actually that wasn’t bad at all compared to what it could have been.

    GO YANKEES!!!

  165. John H.

Rasner will lose his spot to either Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves or anyone else soon. Ponson maybe next.

  166. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

As bad as that was, it could have been a lot worse.

The problem is that if Lackey almost no-hit Boston, I’m not sure I want to see what he does against us. Maybe it’s a good thing it looks like it’s going to start to pour.

  167. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Rasner was a band-aid for this team and it’s time to rip it off.

I hope this offense came to play today and not the usual crap.

  168. TKinDC

Thank goodness for the bottom of the Halos’ line-up –

    .231, .227, .218, and .185.

    That is pretty awful.

  169. Angel

I sure hope they spent a little extra time advance scouting, Lackey, lol

They do have a .290 batting average against, but I would tend to think that also covering points in his career when he wasn’t pitching as effectively as he is now.

  170. vinny-b (Cashmoney, Girardi, Nardi, Pettitte, Mo = my NYY 5)

Note to Yankees: Rasner is garbage. Call Kennedy up”

be careful, what you wish for.

  171. Wander

Damon has just been on for almost the whole season. He is such a lift to this team with his bat.

Good small ball from the yankees here.

  172. JR Yankees

Thats one way for the Cap to stay out of the DP.

  173. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

…Jeter bunted! Joy to the world!

  174. SJ44

    Trisha,

The only “fool” in this thread is you.

Are you really serious about Darrel Rasner? He hasn’t won a game since June 1. He has been a journeyman pitcher throughout his career.

Tell me Trisha, when the Yankees DFA’ed, NOBODY picked him up. That’s how he got outrighted to Scranton.

Now, for a league STARVING for pitching, how do you suppose 29 other teams passed on such a “gem”?

The guy is a #7 or #8 starter on just about any team in baseball. He’s certainly not an “in the rotation guy” on a playoff team. He’s there because of injuries (Wang), and ineffectiveness (Hughes and Kennedy).

Guys like Rasner don’t get personal catchers. Mike Mussina, a borderline Hall of Famer, gets that choice. He’s earned it.

Why do the Yankees have to weaken their team to make Rasner happy? It should be the other way around. He has to show the Yankees why they should keep weakening their team by running him out there every fifth day.

The irony of your defense of Rasner is, if he pitched for an opposing team, you would rip the crap out of him.

  175. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

I have no problem with Jeter bunting since he is becoming the DP King of the Major Leagues.

  176. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Actually it’s a pretty interesting phenomenon that some top pitchers haven’t enjoyed the experience of having Posada behind the dish. Johnson just about refused to have him catch his games during his first season.

I’m not knocking Jorge as much as pointing out that it isn’t that unusual for pitchers to have a preference for/against certain catchers. How about Mussina saying that Molina is the best catcher he has ever thrown to?

So it shouldn’t really be whether someone is the 5th in the rotation or the 1st if you have a catcher who has had some difficulty with pitchers.

Rasner stunk with Jorge, shone with Moeller, and was pretty good with Molina. Let’s hope he and Pudge have a good experience – for the good of the team.

  177. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Bobby, what was that?

  178. TKinDC

How about a sudden attack of clutchness from our man A-Rod!

  179. JoeT 28 in 09!! Pitch PAVANO until his arm falls off!! (over/under 3 innings)

I love Michael Kay, I know many on here don’t – I do – but he obviously hasn’t seen that Derek Jeter GIDP just about every time there’s a guy on first recently

  180. Angel

“Note to Yankees: Rasner is garbage. Call Kennedy up.”

Whatever, that sentiment will last as long as it takes for Kennedy to have a bad outing. Then it will be “Kennedy is garbage. Call FOTD up.”

    Nice bunt Jetes

  186. Noy

    Rasner is terrible.

  187. Pedro

That’s the way to go, swing at teh breaking ball in the dirt and watch the FB down the middle. We’ll score a bunch this way.

  188. Yankee Trader

    86
This might already be answered, Pavano does not have a buyout, only a 13M club option. Bring him up in August for an away game, hope he pitches well, run him thru the waiver wire and let someone else get stuck with the little left on that contract 39.95M over the last four years.

As far as Giambi is concerned, let there be an agreement that when offered arbitration, he’ll decline allowing the Yankees a probable Type B. [1B/OF/DH lumped together] That’s the least Giambi could do for the Yankees.

Abreu is 35-will he want a 3 year contract? Hopefully the Yankees, despite him being best with RISP and possible 100 RBI’s, won’t bite.

Well at least Lacky won’t pitch a no-hitter.
Rasner needs to pitch a “Ponson” from here on out!

  189. Angel

Over/under on first person to make a crack containing the words “not clutch”.

Good thing you were sitting breaking ball A-Rod!!

Another K looking for Arod. If he is gonna strike out atleast swing the bat and maybe he will happen to make ocntact by accident.

  199. Larry

Strike three. Big surprise there, not. He doesn’t hit Lackey anyway. They just posted his career numbers versus him and they’re very bad. They’re actually worse the last several years. He has 3 homers off of him, but he hasn’t hit anything close to one for years. Lackey pretty much owns ARod right now.

  200. mel

    cable issues.

can anyone explain why alex got caught looking again?

  201. Ot

Rasner is why we are in 3rd place.

  202. Arun

THis is the worst 3 and 4 hole hitting combination I have seen from the Yankees since perhaps Jesse Barfield and Mel Hall. I am dead serious. Arod only guesses at pitches to hit home runs (all ego, no heart, no clue how to play winning baseball) and Abreu is a glorified Mel Hall.

  203. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

because when there is a fastball inside Alex just can’t swing at it.

  204. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

SJ44, time to get on your meds if a post is going to upset you so much dear!

Other pitchers have been picked off the scrap heap before and become gems for teams.

I don’t make it a habit of ripping players on other teams unless it’s the Sux.

It isn’t rocket science to let a certain catcher catch games for a pitcher if the goal is to win games.

Now SJ44, you who were ready to dump Giambi, Cano, Pettitte and everyone else, you who already gave up on the season and said that the team had to get rid of a lot of players and retool, you who didn’t see this team making it to the postseason, you who have called things wrong before, it is to the benefit of the team for Rasner to win games, however that has to happen.

Enjoy the game! I know I will.

  205. Lance

He won’t stay the league’s leading hitter if he let’s fastballs down the middle of the plate pass him by. A-Rod is a guess hitter. He didn’t do a good job guessing during that at bat.

  217. Matt

That’s what happens when you walk a .185 hitting no hit 9th hitter.

  221. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Jennifer, absolutely. Jorge has called more great games than not. I was only pointing out that not all pitchers and catchers work beautifully together and sometimes you do what you can to respect the combination in order to win games.

  222. Gandy

Rasner is a terrible pitcher. Time to go.

  223. Larry

Brandon, I think he can hit that pitch, but not much with 2 strikes. Say it’s the first pitch and he guesses inside, he could hit that pitch. To be fair, that was an excellent pitch by Lackey. It’s on the inside corner. ARod has taken many a strike three that had me scratching my head more than that one.

  224. joe

    Okk, bye Rasner.

  230. Global Warming

I think it’s pretty safe to say this is the beginning of the end for the Rasner era.

Either it’s his second to last start or it’s his last start. Kennedy this week or Hughes in 2 weeks.

I like Rasner but his stuff is bad, very very bad. If he doesn’t have pinpoint accuracy he’s extremely hittable.

  231. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Ken Singleton with the understatement of the year: “The Yankees have trouble getting Chone Figgins out”. Really, Kenny? :P

  232. Larry

We can thank Kennedy for being terrible for being in 3rd place.

  233. Pedro

Rasner throws 88mph with no command. Now that’s a great pitcher!

  234. Larry

Laura, I wish he’d start guessing right more often with RISP.

  235. froot

“The guy is a #7 or #8 starter on just about any team in baseball”

You’re exaggerating. He would be in the rotation of Texas or Pittsburgh or Washington. And you won’t find 6 starters better than him on the Tigers or Royals or Rockies or Mariners or either.

Sure the dude isn’t a good big league pitcher, but saying he is a #8 starter on any team in baseball is insulting to the dude.

And Jeter, despite the GIDP problems, should definitely not be bunting there. it’s just a dumb thing to do. If you really prefer that jeter bunt because you would rather have one out than two outs, this means you have no confidence in derek jeter, and therefore hejust shouldn’t be batting in the top of the order at all. he needs to swing the bat there. The team is down by 2, they need some runs. Giving up free outs is not the way to get back in the game.

  236. SJ44

Walks an .185 hitter on 4 pitches and follows that up by getting blitzed by the #9 hitter.

Ian Kennedy may not be a favorite son but, if he pitches well today, he has to get Rasner’s start in Anaheim next week. Putting Rasner out there to pitch again against this team is just setting yourself up for defeat.

At this point in the season, the Yankees need to go start to start with Rasner and Ponson. Neither guy has the luxury being given any more “time”.

They pitch well, they stay in the rotation for their next start. They don’t, you replace them.

They are running out of time, and are losing ground everyday, to be looking at it any other way.

If neither guy likes it, then DFA them.

You don’t hold yourself hostage for the feelings of journeymen players when you are trying to make the playoffs.

  237. PBL

    seriously giambi?

  238. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    2 outs Rasner. come on

  239. TKinDC

    That, um, sucked!

  240. fellowship

rasner and ponson pitching 40% of the time

    amazing

    thanks cashman!!

  245. Wander

Come the hell on Giambi, you gotta make that.

  246. Angel

Well, i’m not saying that Rasner has been effective lately at all. He hasn’t. And they really couldn’t keep Moeller around just for him.

I was more making a statement on how fairweather a lot of people are on here. FOTD is a catchphrase.

  247. Mike

Fact is A-Rod hits his homers when we’re up or down large deficits. Make excuses all you want. A fact is a fact. He is an awful hitter under pressure.

  248. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

    This is all Pudge’s fault.

  249. Arun

    Calling Ian Kennedy? Jarod Washburn?

I get the feeling this is it for Razmatazz.

  250. Lager

Thanks Yanks for making us deal with SJ44’s rants. Great stuff.

The loser only posts during losses.

  251. Buzz

giambi been playing everyday and done nothing. Give sexson at least 1 game vs RHP -_-

  252. Pedro

    Here comes the 3-run HR.

“They pitch well, they stay in the rotation for their next start. They don’t, you replace them.”

    SJ –

I think you said the other day (and Cashman says it from time to time) – players let you know where they belong.

If IPK has his stuff together and commits to throwing strikes then he’s the next man up with Phil hopefully not far behind him.

  255. SJ44

If you only think I post during losses, you are dumber than your name. So, I will decline your wish.

Trade Cano? In a NY minute if I can get back to good players in return. That’s been my entire point about Cano. If he improves the team more by trading him than by his presence, why not? That’s simple baseball logic.

DFA Giambi? Yeah, he’s been a BIG help to the team this year. Especially in the last two months.

Fortunately, he won’t be back next year. That’s a step in the right direction.

  256. Buzz

every game pudge started we seem to be losing….

  257. Arun

DOn’t blame this series on the pitching. If they had a clue how to play team baseball like the Angels we’d be looking at taking 3 of 4 today.

  258. Wander

There you go. Rasner limits the damage, but he’s gotta stop giving up runs and tighten up here.

  259. CT

    Biggest bore here=SJ44

  260. S

    Oh man…

Wasn’t sure if Rasner was going to get out of that inning.

  261. BBFan

This terrible infield defense is killing us. Giambi is atrocious on the field. Even if the offense wakes up it is too much to overcome these free giveaways.

#1 priority in the offseason should be to address this glaring shortcoming.

  262. Matt

Whether or not Rasner holds them down, the damage has been done. Lackey on the mound, 3 runs might as well be 30. They already are down and probably out, especially when you see guys like Abreu and A-Rod having terrible AB’s with RISP.

  263. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

“I was more making a statement on how fairweather a lot of people are on here. FOTD is a catchphrase.”

Can we score some runs now? Please?

  265. Gary

Really? Andy in game 1 getting blwon out. Mo choking game 2. rasner stinks.

And the Angels pitching like champs.

Open your eyes. It isn’t about offense.

Why did we win Sat? Moose.

  266. S

    Buzz,

Pudge caught Ponson, and we lost that game because we couldn’t score.

  267. SJ44

    Agree or Disagree?

  270. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

And by the way, I am comfortable with whatever decision the team makes regarding Rasner.

I was merely pointing out that he is a lot more effective with certain catchers than with others. That is a statement of fact.

  271. Diane

    Sj44,

Lay off a real fan like trisha you ingrate. Go cry someplace else you jerk.

  272. PBL

SJ is a good poster..in fact a lot of people say he is their favorite. I don’t agree with trading cano or dfa’ing rasner, but sj follows the team closely, especially the prospects, and has been able to add a lot of value to the discussions on this board by sharing his thoughts.

  277. Pedro

  280. PBL

    that was a walk

  281. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Can Girardi sit Giambi? For, like, one game? He’s becoming more of an automatic out than Melky right now and it’s a little frustrating.

  282. BBFan

    This game is still winnable.
We are only in the second inning.
Lackey was not that great before last near no-hitter.

  283. Ricky Bobby

Trish stop boring us with your facts. The FACT is Rasner sucks, get it?

  284. Rob NY

Who would you rather read and respond to? People who make intelligent, well thought out points while sometimes being negative or reactionary (Like SJ44) or ridiculous nonsense that wasn’t thought out until the poster saw it in the comment box while mostly reactionary and hardly ever insightful or intelligent (a lot of the rest of the commenters)

I generally dont read the people I dont like. If you dont like somebody’s posts just move along and keep it baseball. I never understand why some folks like to obsess over other posters on here as opposed to talking baseball. Don’t like what somebody says? Think out a well reasoned response and show some stats to back yourself up. Regardless, everybody enjoy the game.

  285. Lance

“The Starting Pitching has been pretty good considering we have Ponson and the Ras at the back end, friendo.”

    Gary,
You can’t win when you score zero runs in 9 innings. If they scored at all (instead of Arod guessing with 2 strikes looking to pad his HR totals and striking out looking twice), they’d be looking at taking 3 of 4 today. What part of that don’t you get idiot?

    :(

  292. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

See, that’s why he should be batting 5th.

  293. Global Warming

Nady has been pretty good, I bet he would make a better #3 hitter than Abreu.

    Damon
    Jeter
    Nady
    A-Rod
    Abreu
    Giambi
    Cano

Who cares about lefty, righty throughout. Look at the Angels, they rarely have the same lineup.

  294. pauly

“Only these morons can complain about the leagues leading hitter”

What’s his average, with runners in scoring position? And what’s his average, when the game is on the line?

Don’t tell me, what the rest of the team is doing. This is the man who signed a $300,000,000 contract. And he is the player, batting clean-up.

    He is a choker.

I remember players like Bernie and Justice, who were capable of carrying this team on their back for weeks at a time, when the offense was not producing. Not arod. His nickname dating back to seattle was ice-water.

“Fact is A-Rod hits his homers when we’re up or down large deficits. Make excuses all you want. A fact is a fact. He is an awful hitter under pressure.”

You must have missed the entire 2007 season, or perhaps you just have a very selective memory. Look, the offense definitely has big problems. But Alex Rodriguez is not one of them. Look elsehwere for your complaints about the offense. Cano, Jeter, Giambi, Melky, Molina, Abreu, injuries to Jorge/Matsui, and ineffective bench guys like Betemit/Ensberg/Gardner have all much much more significant to the Yankee hitting problems this season. ARod is probably the best hitter in baseball after Pujols. he is part of the solution. It is amazing that you don’t understand what you have with him.

  298. 86w183

I’m done with Rasner. The kid tries, but he’s simply not very good. I want to see Kennedy Friday night no matter how he pitches for SWB today.

This is Rasner’s 16th start and it’s obvious he won’t be going more than 6 innings for the 14th time. In fact he has gone beyonf 5 2/3 just twice in eleven starts assuming he’s out early today. That’s just awful.

Mussina is a really finicky guy, much like Greg Maddux and they both LOVE the backup catcher whoever he happens to be because they like the extra attention that guy pays to him and his stuff, his pattern of pitching etc. That Rasner was good with Moeller is something they can re-establish in SWB.

  299. Angel

“Well, this can’t be about me since I don’t know what the FOTD stands for. LOL!”

LOL, it isn’t. I just meant is as Flavor of the Day. Thats how a lot of people propose trades or request players. Kennedy is the FOTD until he has a bad outing, then these people move on to the next FOTD as a solution.

  303. j

the diffrence between ponson and ras is this. ponson throws picthes down the middle and does not try and aim for the corners. ranser last inning walked wilits on 4 pitches. you dont picth scared to a number 9 hitter

  304. Larry

Well, his career stats might tell you that he’s as good under pressure, but his Yankee stats don’t. Mind you, I’m saying as good, not terrible. As a Yankee, as a rule, his situtional hitting is clearly below his overall hitting.

  305. stuart

MLL so you are a delinquent also!!!

the angels no vlad and hunter makes no difference..

Nice walk to the #9 guy in the lineup..
The yanks have walked less this year then the Rays!!!!The plate discipline has gone somewhere……

the angels just make all the plays and we make some plays on occasion…rsner cannot walk people with his stuff…

  306. fred from jersey

Kennedy is terrible. He is the reason why we are going to finish 3rd. He should have been traded for a real starter.

  310. Rick

Global Warming start listening and reading SJ44 because you have no clue.

  311. Vin

I think rasner is the epitome of a joke, i can not take this guy seriously. He is your prototypical guy who wins his first couple of games cause no one has seen him before and then of course ppl realize “oh wait, this guy has absolutely no stuff and we can swing at his whoppin 85 mph heater.” Seriously anyone can be an improvement, its painful for me to watch this guy continue pitching for the yanks, ponson is atleast bearable cause he has the possibility of wiggling out of problems cause he has decent stuff..rasner has no excuse, and i would rather not waste his spot on the rotation on someone with no future over one of our touted youngsters who are pushing for a call up. Cashman make it happen, there isn’t much time left for experimenting with this bum.

  312. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

  313. sdjohn

Paging Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Ian Kennedy if your in the building please report to the pitching mound. I know your in Scranton Mr. Kennedy, but please hurry CUZ RASNER EFFIN SUCKS!!!!

  314. Angel

    A run would help.

  315. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Rasner has done his best for us. He’s a borderline ML level player at best…and he’s still been able to keep us in the majority of his starts.

Not his fault he was matched up with Lackey. Or that he gets no offensive support.

  316. Steve

Rasner is a not a major league pitcher. We all know this.

  317. Gary

This series with the Angels provides just a sample of what the postseason can be assuming the Yankees get in as a Wild Card.
True enough the Yankees don’t need a 5th starter in the postseason but Angel pitching has shut down Yankee hitting with the exception of yesterday with still 6 more games to be played IN L.A.

  318. stuart

the angels have a catcher hitting 218, there 9th hitter today is hitting 190, they ae not playing there 2 of 3 best hitter and all they do is push the defense and take advantage of mistakes…..

the angels do not walk at all but they can run…..

  319. Busy

Lackey will maybe let up 1 run today.

  320. Angel

Rasner isn’t getting much help from the HP umpire on a few pitches.

  321. Phil

  327. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Rasner isn’t getting much help from the HP umpire on a few pitches.”

“Nady has been pretty good, I bet he would make a better #3 hitter than Abreu.”

    GlobalWarming,

Anybody would make a better #3 hitter than Bobby Abreu except Justing Christian, Jose Molina, Richie Sexson, Betemit, and Melky.

SO I would say Damon, Jeter, Giambi, A Rod, Nady, and Cano would be better. Dead serious. This is the one thing that makes me think Girardi is as clueless as Joe. Abreu has hit there for over 2 years and he’s sucked for about 1.5 years. Yet Joe continues to put him there, as of he is completely “clueless”.

  330. MLL

“Rasner isn’t getting much help from the HP umpire on a few pitches.”

Melky is so good in the field. Thank God.

  333. Vin

All i am sayin is that he is not a pitcher who has any future with this team, lets be realistic people. You can blame his problems all you want on the lack or run support and he is a serviceable 5th starter, all i want is for that spot to be given to a minor league player who has some future with us. We can give the spot to a pitcher who can gain valuable major league experience and instead of rasner eat up hopefuly 5 innings a game, we can give it to say kennedy or ascves, or phil coke or whoever it doesn’t matter

  334. Larry

Let’s not exaggerate. Alex Rodriguez did not carry the team on his back over a long stretch of time. Nobody does that in baseball. Rodriguez had a tremendous first half and the team and offense still struggled. They took off in the second half when the entire team started hitting.

  335. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

It’s really toxic over here during games.

Sadly, this is nothing compared to how bad it can really get.

  345. Guiseppe Franco

    In case you’re wondering…

Kennedy today so far in Scranton:

    3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 36 pitches, 28 strikes

  346. stuart

  350. Guiseppe Franco

Um, if A-Rod hadn’t had the tremendous first half that he did, the second half surge wouldn’t have meant squat because they would have been 20-25 games out instead of 11. There is no way that you can minimize A-Rod’s performance last year. He kept the team in the hunt and gave them a chance.

Now, do they make the playoffs without his first half? No, absolutely not, but he didn’t carryy the entire team on his back for half aseason.

  367. Angel

The Yanks don’t have it this year. This week has made that apparent.

  368. stuart

    MLL are you retarded?????

  369. Buzz

we are not scoring 3 runs off lackey

  370. Matt

Pudge’s at bat was horrible. 3-0 count down 3 runs, you better take 2 pitches. A hit is just as good as a walk in that spot, make him throw strikes.

And it’s the same story as always. It doesn’t matter if it’s Lackey or no name Scott Feldman. They have their first inning chance, fail misearbly striking out swinging away wildly, and then go down 1-2-3 almost every inning or ground into a million DP’s to immediately erase every baserunner.

This team GIVES UP. It’s embarrassing.

And when will Melky realize he’s not a power hitter? Why is he trying to put a curveball in the dirt into orbit?

  371. fausto

Like i said .They come to NY and all of a sudden they can’t play,it’s amazing!

  372. E-Man

Kennedy is not an answer for this rotation. It’s like calling up Rasner #2.

  373. Larry

I have no axe to grind, but you are clearly a blind apologist. Knock yourself out.

  374. SJ44

    Guiseppe,

    Great minds…..lol

I hope Kennedy gets the next start in Rasner’s spot in Anaheim. Aceves is still struggling to get his pitch count up after his groin injury. In addition, Kennedy is also on the 40 man roster (Aceves is not), making it easier to recall him.

Its time to see what Kennedy can do. Rasner hasn’t won since June 1 and really hasn’t pitched that well in most his outings since his 3-0 start.

At some point, they have to find out if Kennedy can help them.

If his start today is showing that he can throw all of his pitches for strikes (which we can’t tell working off gametracker) I’d go that route and see what happens.

  375. Pudge Rules

Pudge will come around. Have faith

  376. TKinDC

IPK also wouldn’t need to be added to the roster, Aceves would.

  377. #8

    Preach on, SJ!

    Preach on.

  378. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Besides “Angel” you’ve made it obvious you took that name just to be a troll. No other reason.

  379. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

The Angels are the hottest team in baseball, yada yada yada. But for one lousy run the series could be 2-1 Yankees at this point.

    Just saying.

    She’s right.

  380. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

“Now, do they make the playoffs without his first half? No, absolutely not, but he didn’t carry the entire team on his back for half aseason.”

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

  381. gordo

kennedy has just as bad stuff as rasner

  382. Vince Black

“And Jeter, despite the GIDP problems, should definitely not be bunting there. it’s just a dumb thing to do. If you really prefer that jeter bunt because you would rather have one out than two outs, this means you have no confidence in derek jeter, and therefore hejust shouldn’t be batting in the top of the order at all. he needs to swing the bat there.”

My 6 year old just said , “duh”.

  383. AROD(kROD)

its so easy to pitch to arod in a pressure situation even if u throw it down the plate he will still pop it up

  384. Arun

Let’s see if Rasner can get through the next two innings unscathed. Then we have a chance.

  385. Angel

“Besides “Angel” you’ve made it obvious you took that name just to be a troll. No other reason.”

Who gave you “rights” on my name? You pay for it? Sit on it.

  386. S

    fausto,

Nady’s 7 for 22, which is a .318 avg. That’s pretty good in my book.

And Marte’s line hasn’t been too bad.

  387. Ricky Bobby

A complete game shut out would be nice for Lackey today. Go Halos!

  388. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

If I was “new” to this board, and I saw someone else had the name I was using – I’d change it.

Unless of course I deliberately wanted to be an obnoxious jackass and cause confusion, that is.

  389. AROD(kROD)

wow 3-1 again to a 9th hitter you should quit pitching

  390. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Anybody notice how when A-Rod tackles a pop up, the whole team holds their breath? LOL!

  391. Harry

Always good to play for 1 run down by 2 runs with Rasner pitching. Good bunt, Jetes.

  392. Phil- 27 in '08

Start to start evaluations for Ponson and Rasner. Ponson earned another start, based on his last outing. Rasner…we’ll see if he can hold them to 3 runs in 6+.

  393. Matt

Wow Rasner are you kidding me?

    Willits is hitting .185.

And you walked him TWICE in front of Figgins, and he’s already scored a huge put away run in this game.

Just THROW IT DOWN THE MIDDLE. He has 0 HR and is hitting .185. What’s the worst that can happen? He earns his way on base instead of being walked?

  394. Angel

You realize there are more than 1 Angels in this world? Get over it.

  395. sdjohn

E-Man and all the Kennedy naysayers. Get a clue. He may not come in and dominate, or even be good. This is when you let young pitching (ya know your future) get some innings in. Would you rather have Rasner out there with absolutley no chance of him turning into a quality pitcher and still sucking? or IPK who COULD turn into a MLB #3 or 4 starter? When Rasner’s turn in the rotation comes up, EVERYONE has to think, oh sh!t here’s a loss. With Kennedy, you MAY get a win here and there and get him MLB experience.

  396. AROD(kROD)

when teams see they are facing rasner and ponson they are sitting there smiling

  397. TKinDC

    Walking Willets twice?

    ugh.

  398. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

That is just stupid. Two walks to the 9th guy. Ugh!

  399. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Well, lets see how long you want to keep that name now its not serving its purpose.

    What is it with Figgins?

  400. Vince Black

“Pudge was a terrible move. He can’t handle pitchers”

Wow, What MLB seasons have you been watching for the last 15 years or so?

  401. Sal

Great walk to the 9th hitter!

  402. Phil

    Kennedy>Rasner.

  403. Arun

    Time for a little Razmatazz . . .

  404. Angel

Figgins may get 9 hits today.

  405. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

This guy is worse than Millar. Just can’t get him out.

  406. AROD(kROD)

angels please blow it out so we can never see rasner again

  407. E-Man

“Its time to see what Kennedy can do. Rasner hasn’t won since June 1 and really hasn’t pitched that well in most his outings since his 3-0 start. ”

I guess you missed the beginning of this season…

We already saw what Kennedy can do. He can barely make 5 innings. He can take what the media says personally. That’s not a good combination. People said the reason for this was that he was rushed. Well bringing him up in the same year is still rushing him. Let him grow up a little down there.

  408. Yankee Trader

Giambi was not Cashman’s fault. George and his inner circle pushed for Giambi. That same year David Ortiz was a FA. I know we’d have at least one more championship with Ortiz.

I believe the key to the offseason is not signing position players like Teixeira to long term contracts, but to identify the next young star, like a Carlos Quentin, who blossomed with the White Sox, and be willing to trade some of your depth at pitching for talented position players who are hungry to win. Find me the next Evan Longoria, Ryan Braun, etc.

  409. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Maybe try Giese after this inning?

  410. AROD(kROD)

    theres the game

  411. Larry

popups and Arod definitely do not mix. Sometimes you see Jeter smirking after he catches one. I think they all realize he’s not comfortable with them. Whenever he and Jeter are going after one, Arod usually just backs off and let’s Jeter take it.

  412. Vin

hey Vin, nice name, anyway who the hell is reggie willits and how does he get 2 walks, it blows my mind when something like this happens, he breezes through 2 hitters and then walks the no 9 guy, what is the logic behind this cause i don’t effin get it, really don’t cause the next guy is 2 for 2 and what does he do, base hit, how a an effin double 2 runs score, seriously i m sick of this pull this piece o crap out, hes a joke

  413. Phil

    Rasner getting booed.

  414. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Yea Pudge was real terrible handeling the likes of Beckett Burnett and Pavano when the Marlins were shutting the Yanks down in the World Series.

  415. Vince Black

And that’s what happens when you walk the number 9 hitter with two outs.

  416. AROD(kROD)

    ranser last start PLEASE!!

  417. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    Or now.

  418. nan

    GET RID OF RASNER

  419. S

This is why you don’t walk the #9 hitter…

  420. Arun

    Alright release him.

  421. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

ABOUT F’N TIME THEY PULLED HIM

  422. Matt

    GAME OVER.

This is ALL because Rasner WALKED THE .185 HITTING 9TH HITTER, and WITH TWO OUTS.

GAME OVER. This is Lackey on the mound, not no name rookie who’s peeing his pants pitching in Yankee Stadium. Nobody to blame but themselves. Two walks to the #9 hitter, bad defensive plays, they didn’t lose this series to the Angels, they lost it to THEMSELVES.

  423. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

There is no way you can start this guy vs the same team on Friday night.

  424. Ricky Bobby

    Nice! Go Halos!

  425. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

All of this because he couldn’t get out the number 9 guy.

  426. Angel

    Rasner should never start again.

  427. Guiseppe Franco

    SJ,

I wonder though if the Yanks are going to want to throw Kennedy into the fire right off the bat against the Angels.

Seems like they might be thinking that holding off and starting him the following week against MIN or KC might be better for Kennedy.

Then again, I guess he can’t do worse against the Angels than Rasner is doing today.

  428. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Yep, can’t walk the #9 hitter.

  429. SJ44

Tough part about this performance, aside from Rasner being horrible again, is that you blow up your bullpen before a 10 game road trip. Certainly not what you are looking to do at this point in the season.

Ian Kennedy get ready, you’re next.

  430. j

someone explain to me why ras walked wilits twice when wilits has never hit a homerun in the majors?

  431. Mott

    Game over.

  432. Arun

Jeter looked upset for a friend just there. It’s obvious he’s gone now.

  433. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

    This is hilarious.

  434. AROD(kROD)

Ranser enjoy ur last inning pitching at yankee stadium

  435. Hand's

    SJ,

    Tell us the truth.

  436. lil' m

That loss on Friday really hurt them.

  437. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

I wonder why he didn’t take him out.

  438. Angel

    Take him out.

  439. Matt

These are the kind of series that kill you. Tampa is playing hapless Detroit. Boston is playing hapless Oakland. They are burying themselves with this horrible series.

And yet again, if they win the game they SHOULD HAVE WON Friday night, they split the series. They scored ZERO and lost 1-0. That’s pathetic and disgraceful. When Ponson throws 7 shutout, you better damn well win. This series is showing us that this team just doesn’t have the heart to win the games that are important.

  440. stuart

when you lose agame to the orioles 7 to 6 and 1 -0 to the angels a game like this cannot happen..

willetts hitting 190, gets walked twice… game probably over with this loser offense.. they scored there 8 runs yesterday so the yare done for the weekend…

if they at least made the other pitcher work I would be more satisfied.

    YECH>>>>>>>>

  441. TKinDC

“that you blow up your bullpen before a 10 game road trip.”

Do you think Chris Britton’s travel agent gets a volume discount?

  442. E-Man

Bring back Boomer. He looked like he lost 100.

  443. AROD(kROD)

if rasner starts again someone should get fired

  444. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“Jeter looked upset for a friend just there. It’s obvious he’s gone now.”

    LOL!

  445. fausto

    S
one player does not make a TEAM. Like what he’s doing but look at the rest.Nady is hitting better than our DH Giambi.

  446. dan

we should have sold at the deadline. we dont have it.

  447. AROD(kROD)

its time to give someone else a chance

  448. Vin

some good news however, phil “the future” hughes looked good again in the minors again, 3 and a third of no runs, a hit, a walk, 5 k’s and supposedly hitting 95 consistently atleast…supposedly he needs atleast 3-4 more starts to be MLB ready

  449. Ricky Bobby

Trish, You still think Rasner is a major league pitcher? LOL

  450. sdjohn

    J,
I’ll explain it this way. He walked the 9 hitter TWICE because he is a bad pitcher. He should not be in the league yet, he’s starting for your 200 million dollar New York Yankees. Enjoy!

  451. under ex

u know when stuart is angry the team is playing bad!!

    sarcasm.

  452. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

The problem is when the Angels were killing the Sox this week the Yanks didn’t take care of business vs the O’S, and I think we all knew the best the Yanks were going to do was split this weekend vs the Angels, while the Sox were going to beat up on the A’S.

  453. Matt

    Willits- .185 AVG/.556 OPS

    Result- 2 5-pitch BB’s

This is why Rasner will be gone after today. Take out those 2 walks and there is no way that he gives up more than 3 runs thus far. He beat himself with nibbling and thus he has no right to be in the rotation.

  454. Arun

If Hughes is hitting 95 he should get one more start and then pull a Joba by trying to go just 4 or 5 innings. We still have Giese don’t we?

  455. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

It really didn’t take long for the euphoria of the trade deadline to become “we should have been sellers”.

Must be some kind of record in the bipolar mania medical records. :)

  456. Arun

Hughes hasn’t hit 95 since the playoffs or maybe even May ‘07.

  457. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

We need to make our move now!

  458. SJ44

    Guiseppe,

Its probably not their ideal plan (to start Kennedy in Anaheim) but, at this stage, its almost unavoidable.

Rasner can’t pitch against these guys and despite the proclaimations of some, he’s just not a very good pitcher. He what he is and the expiration date in terms of his effectiveness for this team seems to have hit.

I don’t care what Ian Kennedy did in April. He stunk in April. Doesn’t mean he will stink his entire career.

Take a look at Kennedy’s career in comparison to Rasner’s at the minor league level. Kennedy has been the better pitcher. Its not even close.

You don’t get a “one and done” shot as a major league pitcher when you have had the success Kennedy has had.

Nobody is saying he’s going to be Cy Young. However, if given the choice (if there is one at this point) of throwing Kennedy Friday night in Anaheim or Rasner, I would choose Kennedy.

    Kennedy after 4 today for Scranton: 1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 K’s, 59 pitches, 40 strikes.

Scranton leads Pawtucket 3-1 in the 5th.

  459. F

This isn’t a playoff team. We should have sold and got some real players.

  460. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Well lets see what Arod can do here.

  461. No Playoffs This Year

One word describes this team: Suck

  462. Moshe Mandel

It’s time for Alex to hit one out in a “big” spot, just to shut everyone up.

  463. Vin

well hughes pitched in low A ball, he hasn’t pitched in a while and wasn’t amazing in his time up this year, so they prolly wanna take it slow, bring him up slowly, cause they dont wanna sacrifice his future by rushing him up before he is ready to go, but i m sure he ll be good in a couple more weeks…just gotta believe we can hang in there for our pitching to come around

  464. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“We need to make our move now!”

    Amen.

  465. Vince Black

    now pitch around alex

  466. Yankee Trader

    Conversation between Rasner and Girardi:

Girardi-”Well son, you know why I’m here!
Rasner-”Please don’t take me out. I’ll get the last guy out.
Girardi-”Listen son I have a bet with Eiland, that you wouldn’t give up 6 runs today.”
Rasner-” Do what you want, since I know ya’ll hate me, and I’m gone.
Girardi-”Actually you’re reading my mind. I just got a call from Cashman to clean out your locker.”
Rasner-”In that case let me stay in. I promise you won’t lose your bet, and it’ll give me a chance to let the crowd boo some more.”
    Girardi-”Whatever!”

  467. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

As a matter of fact F*** the BP today make Ras pitch the 9 innings…to think just a adequate start and maybe it would be good, But I agree w/ stuart pitching like crap today because that’s what Rasner is doing ! should not be put on someone else Joe save the BP he got you in this mess let him be a big boy and think of someone not named Moeller !

  468. moe

arod is up to kill the rally. time to DFA suzyn and john. they make me throw up!!

  469. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Okay, Alex, now would be time to clutch.

  470. Dave

Nothing like SJ44 stealing from Chad Jennings and passing it off as his own ideas. We got it all today.

  471. Vin

    juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust foul

  472. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Wow, Ras totally overmatched out there. In a way I feel sorry for him, knowing there are so many unrealistic fans out there who think that he is supposed to magically pitch beyond his ability just because he’s facing Lackey, and are castigating him right now because he isn’t.

I am saddened about the score right now, but not actually angry. I know we all hoped for a better performance but, really, Rasner vs Lackey? It’s not exactly reasonable that he’s gonna outpitch one of the best pitchers in the league.

Still, though. I think it’s time to give Kennedy a try. Unless they feel Aceves is a better choice but I’d give Kennedy the call.

  473. Ricky Bobby

Trish must only post when the Yankees are winning, Where did she go, LOL Just think what you could do with the 23 million you pay Gianbi.

  474. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

And ofcourse Alex w/ RISP trying to knock the crap out of the ball instead of shortening the swing !

  475. Vin

    god damit

  476. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Oh that was rudely foul. :(

  477. Moshe Mandel

    That really stinks.

  478. S

    fausto,

I’m just saying that Nady hasn’t been swinging garbage since coming to NY.

I agree that Giambi’s been awful and needs to be out of that 5-spot, though.

  479. Angel

Nobody is less clutch than AROd this yr.

  480. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Ricky Bobby, well let’s put it this way. Just like a lot of pitchers on the Yankees, some of the front of the rotation included, he has had games where he’s given up a lot of runs, and he’s had games where he’s given up very few. Here are his ER in 9 of his starts: 2,2,0,1,2,2,2,3,2.

Has he given the Yankees more than enough for a number #5 starter? You bet he has.

  481. Pat M.

Kennedy, pack your gear you’re going on the road…..Anahiem Stadium, Friday night….

  482. Larry

Sigh. And he does it over and over again.

  483. KL

Lackey is way out Rasners league. It is embarrassing. The Angels pitching embarrassed us.

  484. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Let’s Go Yanks!!!!!

  486. Arun

Giambi will prove eright now he is a better clutch hitter than arod . watch.

  487. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

    Come on X-MAN.

  488. Vin

COMEONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN….lets go nadddyyyyy we brought u for this

  489. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Trish must only post when the Yankees are winning,”

You ARE a fool if you really believe that. But it seems you are an Angel’s fan so maybe you can answer this question for me. Is it true that Lackey’s father is Jim Nabors?

  490. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“LOL Just think what you could do with the 23 million you pay Gianbi.”

She doens’t pay GiaMbi, anything – the Yankees do.

  491. Matt

Thank god Lackey is stupid, because Giambi is hitting .200 in the last month!

  492. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    We come back now!!!!!!

    NOW!!!!!!

  493. Moshe Mandel

They wont score here- Im the most positive fan out there, and even I know that.

  494. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Here we go Nady prove to me you should be moved up in this lineup !

  495. Nick in SF but now in Pikesville, MD

I’m really glad I zipped away from the lovely eastern shore to catch this game… and that won’t even be sarcastic if we can get something going here. Come on X-Man!

This is is for the Ras, right?

  496. Jan

When was the last time A-Rod got a big clutch hit? The guy is a joke.

  497. BBFan

If we score a couple of runs this inning, then there is still a chance to win this game, Lackey or not.

This will be Rasner’s last start. He can not pitch against Halos again next turn. The only reason Girardi left him in the game is becasue you can not burn the bullpen and impact the series with Texas. If we score runs then he will be out, otherwise he has to suck it up.

  498. Matt

If they don’t score this inning, the game is over, and it will have been quite a pathetic job by the offense. 1st and 3rd no outs, you BETTER SCORE AT LEAST ONE.

  499. Jeff(BB)

The best player in baseball is Alex Rodriguez

His OPS, SLG, ****, POS and CHOKER stats says so.

  500. Tennis

    Sick of this team.

  501. SJ44

I wasn’t aware the minor league Gametracker was wholly owned by Chad Jennings “Dave”.

Also, Chad is not at the game in Pawtucket today. He’s driving home from Syracuse after last night’s game.

    Nice try though. Try again.

  502. Vin

OMFG u have got to be kidding me

  503. Moshe Mandel

    Ru kidding me?

  504. PBL

wtf abreu? that has to be one of the stupidest baserunning maneuvers ive ever seen

  505. E-Man

    This team is a joke

  506. Larry

    Abreu, WHAT are you doing?

  507. stuart

raasner will be sent down.. again if he put the ball in play he may be decent but a guy like that cannot walk batter.. moose still gives up plenty of hits but he walks almost no one…

watch the Yankee AB’s the rest of the game, it will tell you if they battle or quit….

for the series the yanks scored 6 runs game 1 3 or so in garbage time, zero game 2, 8 game 3, and so far so zero today……

  508. TKinDC

I can not believe what I just saw.

  509. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    OH F*** THIS SH** !!

  510. Matt

    I’m like SJ44. I’ve given up on 2008.

  511. BBFan

It can not get worse than this.
    Real dumbheads.

  512. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    UUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  513. sdjohn

Ladies and gentleman, your 2008 New York Yankees! Right there sums it up.

  514. Yankee Trader

That is unbelievable. Could you run a little faster Jeter??

    Wow that was sad.

  517. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

There are not words to describe how awful that was.

  518. Matt

GAME OVER. WHAT A PATHETIC PLAY.

Plays like that are why the Yankees are NOT good enough. No contending team EVER gets beaten in that way.

That one run is HUGE, and they blew it with STUPIDITY.

  519. Pat M.

That’s it, everyone is running laps after the game…Total BS…..

  520. Patrick â„¢

Abreu is a terrible player, he needs to be cut immediately.

  521. Zooboy

    Stunning.

  522. Matthew

i hate bobby abreu the guy has talent but hes just unwatchable too many times

  523. Tom

    Retard

  524. SJ44

Well, that’s about as dumb a move as you can do right there Bobby. Even when somebody puts together a representative AB with RISP, they still can’t score.

Man, just an awful performance by the Yankees today.

I hope they have a 7-3 roadtrip in them. If they don’t, they may come home for that short series with the Royals playing for 2009.

  525. Vince Black

wow absolutely no reason for abreu to be tagging there…….still takes a hit to get him in wtf?

  526. Bob(The Original)

    Unbelievable.

    Screw this.

    I give up.

  527. j

why? i am speechless. what did you hope to accomplish?

  528. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    Wow @ Abreu

Downright sickening. Really. Isn’t today’s matchup troublesome enough without veteran players doing stupid crap like that?

  529. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

If that’s not a sign that this is not our year, I don’t know what is.

  530. Matt

And ABREU YOU ARE IN SCORING POSITION STILL YOU MORON. WHY IN GOD’S NAME ARE YOU GETTING THROWN OUT AT 3rd DOWN FOUR. AT LEAST LET JETER SCORE FIRST AND GET IN A RUN DOWN.

They lost ANY hope of winning this game on an idiotic baserunning play. Amazing.

1st and 3rd, no outs, no runs.

That’s the mark of a team that just isn’t good enough.

  531. t

Arod sucks. Cannot come through in the clutch ever. He puts up phenominal numbers but cannot hit in the clutch. Second time tonight with runners in scoring position for Abreau/Arod/Giambi and they can’t put a run on the board. Ridiculous.

  532. Brendon

    Was that Bobbys fault?

  533. Ricky Bobby

    Awesome! Go Halos!

  534. stuart

    that is a DISGRACE…

    CAN YOU BELEIVE THS TEAM???

    ENOUGH..

That was a joke… Jeter did not score…The yare MORONS.. DO not sugar coat this that is a disgrrace……

nice AB by the BEST PLAYER IN THE GAME AROD You groupies love that term but it is BS…

  535. Wangawa

    *turns off TV*

  536. R23

Wow. This team can’t play worse.

    Thanks, A-Rod for stinking.

  537. E-Man

we don’t even get the run because Jeter’s jogging.

  538. romine

That was terrible why the hell are you trying to get to 3rd with two outs anyway? especially on a ball to left field(a short throw to 3rd base). Horrible baserunning from bobby.

  539. Brendon

    or was it Meachems fault?

  540. j

bonehead play. if i was the manager i would bench him the rest of the game

  541. Larry

The best player in baseball is Alex Rodriguez

His OPS, SLG, ****, POS and CHOKER stats says so.

Maybe I shouldn’t have, but I got a chuckle out of this.

  542. fausto

This is what I’m talking about, Arod has a person on third no outs, and he strikes out,Why not sacrifice to bring in a run?
Bases loaded one out NOBODY SCORES double play’s plaques this team.

  543. Arun

Like I said Abreu is highly overrated and needs to be moved from the 3 spot about 1.5 years ago.

  544. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    GO TIGERS!

  545. Wander

Sit Bobby Abreu. Jesus christ. What the hell was that?

  546. GreenBeret7

That was bad. You almost never see abreu make a mistake running the bases. Terrible judgement.

  547. t

Did Meacham signal for Abreau to run or did he do it on his own?

  548. jimmy1138

Wow. Speechless. That’s why the Yankees don’t win anything. They lack baseball fundamentals.

  549. Matt

2-5 homestand. They are lucky they aren’t 5 out already, but they are on the verge of dropping out of playoff contention if they don’t play OUTSTANDING ball on this road trip.

That last play was the most disgraceful job you have EVER seen on the bases. EVER.

  550. Matt

SJ44 remind us that the season is over.

  551. Jim S

Listening to Cashman on TBS, good thing they went to commercial because after that disgrace you knew he was pissed, especially since he was calling out the offense during the interview with the announcers.

  552. Yankee Trader

Wasn’t all Abreu’s fault. I know jeter is faster than Abreu, and he probably was jogging home.

  553. Matt

And wow, look at that. If Abreu didn’t just run right into the out, Jeter easily scored. What a joke.

Jeter was not even a foot from home plate when he got tagged. Wake up Abreu. He’s trying to score. At least TRY to dodge the tag you idiot.

  554. E-Man

    And what does Girardi do?

    nothing.

  555. MLL

1st and 3rd NO ONE OUT.

    A-ROD STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN

  556. Arun

Girardi needs to be held accountable for this type of baseball from the pinstripes. He is acting as clueless as Joe. It’s obvious they need to get back to playing team offense, contact hitting. THat is their problem offensively and has been since O’Neill left.

  557. Angel

Kennedy should pitch if we are not going to win anyway.

  558. Global Warming

Abreu should be benched for the rest of the game

  559. Matt

Jeter was RUNNING FULL SPEED. Abreu blew it, stop blaming Jeter. You NEVER make the 3rd out at 3rd, ESPECIALLY when a runner is tagging up trying to score! Jeter was a FOOT from home plate. If Abreu even TRIES TO DODGE THE TAG, the run scores at the very least and it’s not totally blown.

  560. PBL

how did we do when arod was out of the lineup year?

  561. stuart

disgraceful disgraceful play by the yanks..

    abreu is a moron… that is unforgiveable……

  562. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

This team is so frustrating, honestly. I hate having to watch Ponson and Rasner 2 out of every 5 games. I’m sick of the lack of passion in the team. I’m sick of all the double plays by Jeter. It’s so disturbing when we can’t score more than 2 runs a game. It’s just so frustrating to watch this team. I still believe in them, but it’s so irritating to see what we usually do.

  563. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Maybe Dan Giese should get Rasner’s next start…

  564. PBL

also, abreu makes possibly the stupidest play you will see all season and a group of people bash arod???

  565. Someone Else

“raasner will be sent down.. again if he put the ball in play he may be decent but a guy like that cannot walk batter.. moose still gives up plenty of hits but he walks almost no one…”

Rasner has no options. He’s on the major league club, or put on waivers (which he -won’t- clear).

  566. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Okay, so if the Yankees got to Gomer they can get to him again. Giese can hold it here.

    GO YANKEES!!!

    Please.

  567. Patrick â„¢

Girardi should immediately bench Abreu. He’s terrible in the field, a horrible baserunner and he’s having a down offensive year. He hurts this team way more than he helps. He is literally the worst outfielder in the majors. The stats back this up as well.

  568. Arun

It’s obvious they need to get back to playing team offense, contact hitting. THat is their problem offensively and has been since O’Neill left.

    - Which is why we got rid of Torre (and the bullpen mismanagement). Girardi needs to be held accountable because they aren’t changing for the better, though the bullpen management is better. But the team is no better because of the continuation of this cluelsss ego-oriented offense.

  569. SJ44

Yeah, its all Girardi’s fault Abreu makes a stupid decision on the bases. I’m sure the Yankees are coached to do that.

The manager can’t play for the players. If the players suck it up, what can the manager do?

I know, bench Abreu and play Justin Christian. I’m waiting for that post.

Ironically, Abreu has been the only guy hitting since the Break. He made an idiotic play. But, if you take him out of the lineup, you sure as hell better have somebody better to replace him with.

Unless of course, some of you believe Justin Christian is that guy.

  570. Vin

dam if geise is gonna pitch like this i think we found rasner’s substitute rite here if not anyone else, please cashman ur killin me with this rasner bull crap

  571. Moshe Mandel

You just know Betemit will put one in the gap to make the mistake look worse.

  572. sdjohn

Little league teams don’t do that. But Abreu does, WOW. You can’t blame this season on injuries. We do not play smart baseball. We swing for the fences, nobody cuts down there swing, even with runners on 3rd with less than 2 down. We don’t get good starting pitching outside of Joba, and Moose. 2009 can’t came fast enough. Along with it I hope Girardi has the BALLS to discipline these dumbass plays but his “veteran” stars.

  573. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

I just don’t know what to say. I’m in shock. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a play like that from us. And they robbed that hottie Nady of an RBI as well!!

  574. Don

Going to be fun watching Torre in the WS.

  575. stuart

PBL another SROD groupie.. again the supposed best player in the game is held in disdain by many many people.. is Pujols thought of like that??

I forgot we are jealous of Arods looks and money.. maybe there is a reason for this disdain??

I forgot BA with RISP is just luck or a small sample size, my bad I forgot.. Abreu is at fault of course, Jeter ran hard so it is all on ABreu….2 on zero out our 4, 5, 6 coming up and they get nothing..

HOW MAN YTIMES HAS THAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR??????

  576. TKinDC

Seriously – is there any way that we can possibly blame Meacham for that? Bobby looked shocked.

  577. j

the only way you get a message across if if you bench a star player after they do something like that. yet abreu was still in right field

  578. E-Man

    “Jeter was RUNNING FULL SPEED.”

You can’t run full speed when you’re looking behind yourself.

  579. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Ironically, Abreu has been the only guy hitting since the Break. He made an idiotic play. But, if you take him out of the lineup, you sure as hell better have somebody better to replace him with.”

    Yep.

  580. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Now we have brain surgeons on here saying that was Jeter’s fault?!

Someone must be a member of the Abreu family. Need to bench him now, put Nady in right and Christian in left. If you let him get away with that crap then you’re sending a very negative message to the young players that that kind of garbage is tolerated. It isn’t, or at least shouldn’t be. Just gives other players lisence to make bonehead moves in big games the rest of the season.

  581. sdjohn

I don’t think Betemit has hit a gap since the stone age, don’t worry about that happening.

  582. Larry

I just can’t believe that Abreu tried in the first place, regardless of the circumstances.
That’s a flyball to medium left. And Jeter iis not faster than Abreu. Abreu is faster tthan Jeter. Fastest 2 players on the team aare Damon and Abreu.

  583. fausto

Yankees are over paying the hitting coach. He isn’t helping the players.

After today the Yankees will be ranked they where before the all star game, unfreakin believable.

  584. Someone Else

“Maybe Dan Giese should get Rasner’s next start…”

I was just thinking this, lol.

  585. Jersey

    No one quits like SJ44.

  586. Arun

I am sick of the A Rod Yankees. I’d like to have an infield of Kotchman at first, Cano & Jeter, and Joe Crede at third.

Contact hitters baby. They can score at least one run per nine innings!!!!!!!!

  587. stuart

    SJ STOP WITH THE LOGIC….

look at the angels making the plays….we never make the plays….

the angels are the old yanks of the late 90’s we are the bumbling slugging teams with weaknesses….

  588. MLL

A-Rod is terrible. He is not a winner.

  589. Pat M.

That’s as bad as trying to advance to third on a grond ball hit to short….Unreal….

  590. Patrick â„¢

“I know, bench Abreu and play Justin Christian. I’m waiting for that post.”

Bench Abreu for anyone. His offense (which by the way was below average in the first half) does not make up for his GOD AWFUL baserunning and fielding .

  591. sdjohn

Hmm a first baseman making a good defensive play instead of rolling around on the ground like a beached whale. Must be nice.

  592. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

So, I assume we’ll be 0-3 with Pudge. What’s the record with Molina behind the plate?

  593. SJ44

Looks like Abreu went on his own. I don’t think Meachem is sending him there.

His job is to make sure the Jeter doesn’t leave until the OF catches the ball. I don’t think he is working Abreu on that play. Bobby did that all on his own.

  594. GreenBeret7

Some of you people need to grow up. Abreu made a screwup, but, Jeter’s made at least three this year and two in one game. Stuart Little, you are the last person to be calling anybody a Moron.

  595. Arun

This message brought to you by “Get a Clue Joe”:

Cano would easily make a better 3 or 4 hitter than Abreu or A Rod because he actually makes contact with the ball with runners on!!!

  596. Vin

hang em and bang em…go pudge take some more roids we r gonna need it for the stretch run

  597. TKinDC

Thank God – off the schnyde.

  598. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    YAHOO!

Hey Ricky Bobby, stick that where the sun don’t shine!

  599. Matt

A-Rod should have been traded last July.

  600. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Hey, at least we won’t get shut out!

  601. Moshe Mandel

    Mazal flipping tov.

  602. Brendon

    finally.

  603. S

    THANK YOU, PUDGE!

  604. BBFan

“Wasn’t all Abreu’s fault. I know jeter is faster than Abreu, and he probably was jogging home.”

Not only that, he was looking back at the throw.
Still it is all Abrue’s fault. You can not blame Jeter for this bonehead play.

  605. romine

nady and pudge need to be moved up in the order

  606. Matt

Pudge’s HR means a lot more if not for idiot Abreu.

  607. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

    He finally got a hit.

  608. T Bone

“Looks like Abreu went on his own. I don’t think Meachem is sending him there.

His job is to make sure the Jeter doesn’t leave until the OF catches the ball. I don’t think he is working Abreu on that play. Bobby did that all on his own.”

If the pompous, know it all says so, it’s true.

  609. Moshe Mandel

Matt, it would have been 3 outs.

  610. S

I think that’s his second hit.

  611. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Some of you people need to grow up. Abreu made a screwup, but, Jeter’s made at least three this year and two in one game.”

    Yep.

  612. stuart

I lke Melky and want him to succeed and I know they are stuck with him at least thru this year but his AB’s are bad.. at least make the pitcher work..

the ABreu out makes a difference it would be 5 to 2… they would be in the game..

bad teams or underperforming teams like the Yanks just make mistakes and do not take advantage of there chances, not real complicated…

  613. V

Don’t blame Bobby. He is a great RF.

  614. Confucius

“So, I assume we’ll be 0-3 with Pudge. What’s the record with Molina behind the plate?”

    Aha, it’s not Jeter’s fault or A-Rod’s or Girardi’s or Meachem’s.

    It’s Pudge’s.

  615. Larry

Abreu has about 5 homers the last week. Yeah, I think that offsets his fielding shortcomings and he’s not ordinarily a poor baserunner.

  616. SJ44

    Patrick,

Look at Abreu’s offensive numbers since the Break. He’s been the best hitter on the team.

If you bench the best hitter on an already offensively challenged team, you might as well shut it down.

He made dumb play. That’s not in dispute. Bench him for Justin Christian? I don’t think so.

I’d DH him and put Nady in Right but, I’m not taking his bat, even at this stage of his career out of the lineup.

Next year? I wouldn’t resign him. But, that’s different than what we are talking about now.

  617. Laura - It's up to the Yankees now, turn on the bright lights!

Did anyone see if Meacham told Abreu to run? I’m looking for someone else to blame here.

  618. TKinDC

“Not only that, he was looking back at the throw.
Still it is all Abrue’s fault. You can not blame Jeter for this bonehead play.”

Jete did what he should – he needs to know if the ball is coming to the plate and if there is a play.

Jete could have moonwalked home and it would have made no difference. It is all on Abreu.

  619. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

The 2 Reggie Willits walks are killing this from being a good game right now.

  620. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Okay, so if the Yankees got to Gomer they can get to him again.”

Gomer, as in Pyle? Hahaha, that’s great. May even make the game more watchable as I absolutely hate the guy on Law & Order who played Pyle in FMJ. Not very different than how I feel about Lackey right now, heh.

Meanwhile, Pudge with his first jack as a Yankee! Too bad it couldnt have happened last inning w/all those men on.

Also, the Yankees need to make Lackey throw more pitches. If they could get into the bullpen sometime soon I might be inclined to actually think they still have a chance to win this. Not that the Angel bullpen isn’t good, but it’s not Lackey…

  621. Will Dear

Trisha should start reading SJ44 and realize that the game is over and changes need to be made.

  622. Arun

The score is 5-3 if they don’t have a lineup loaded with home run hitting egomaniacs that can’t make contact with the baseball against good pitchers.

  623. Patrick â„¢

A-rod puts up such great numbers and he’s a great hitter but he has so many terrible at-bats. I can’t remember all the times where he looks just foolish at the plate. I don’t really understand it, he gets his hits and homeruns but when he doesn’t he looks just awful.

  624. BBFan

Those those folks who think this season is over based on the outcome of this game need to get your heads checked :)

Even if we lose and Boston wins today, we are only 3.5 games out in WC and you call the season over with still 51 games left?

  625. stuart

trisha with the stupid support for Abreu.. Guys make mistakes that happens but that was a 3rd grade mistake because he was an idiot….

stupididty is not acceptable errors of effort are acceptable, understand the difference??

the play was right in fron of him going to 3rd served almost no purpose unless you think Lackey will throw a wild pitch.. Blind loyalty for stupidity is not a good virtue.. call it like it is, BAD BASEBALL…

  626. Matt

Amazing how this team BEATS THEMSELVES more than other teams BEAT THEM.

Any semblance of intelligent baserunning and they score at least 1, and who knows if Betemit then puts one in the seats and it’s a game again?

But we will never know, will we? Because they ran themselves out of even ONE of those runs.

Down 4, it might as well be 40000000000000000000000000000 the way they’re playing. They can’t hit with RISP, they can’t even play fundamentally sound baseball! Bad defense costs them runs, then bad baserunning more. The difference in the game is the lack of solid baseball.

Take out the bad defense, take out the bad baserunning, and no walks to Willits, and this is a one run game! Unbelievable! What have the Angels shown this weekend? Not that much. All they’ve shown is that the Yankees are too inconsistent to win because they can’t even play a SOLID GAME OF BASEBALL.

  627. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Abreu has about 5 homers the last week. Yeah, I think that offsets his fielding shortcomings and he’s not ordinarily a poor baserunner.”

    Yep.

  628. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

I think it’s time to see if the third time’s the charm this year with IPK.

  629. sdjohn

Blaming Jeter on that? Seriously? If I’m a player ON ANY LEVEL OF BASEBALL, i don’t expect the retard on 2nd base to tag on fly ball to left field trying for 3rd. Have some of you ever played the game or do you just post in between your bong hits?

  630. yanks in 2008

Too bad the Yanks are going to lose. Now we got to read SJ’s rants.

  631. PBL

stuart, i don’t think i’m arod groupie, but i’m definitely not one of the idiots who thinks he sucks. i made two legitimate points, neither of which were addressed in whatever that was you typed

    1) we have played much better with arod in the lineup than out of the lineup this year

    2) it is ridiculous that people are blaming arod for the outcome of a stupid play abreu made

  632. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

When Rasner gets pulled from the rotation he better not get Dan Giese’s job.

  633. E-Man

“I’d DH him and put Nady in Right but, I’m not taking his bat, even at this stage of his career out of the lineup.”

Awesome. How do you DH him in the middle of a game?

Girardi could try getting in their faces a little? Pretending to care? Something?

  634. Kell

    Lackey vs Rasner.

    Say it again.

We got no shot to win

This game was over at noon

  635. YankeeJosh

Okay, that was an idiotic play by Abreu. The play is in front of him, and he shouldn’t have gone. Once he saw that the play would be close at Third, he should have gotten in a rundown to allow Jeter to score.

Everyone here knows I don’t like Bobby Meachem as a Third Base coach, and I’m not blaming him here. It’s totally on Abreu. But does Meachem have any role there? Can he tell Abreu not to go?

  636. Patrick â„¢

    SJ,

Look at his defense and baserunning. His good hitting doesn’t make up for that. According to BBTF Abreu was the worst fielding outfielder in the majors at the allstar break. Now I see why Philly fans ran him out of town, the guy is not a good player at all.

  637. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

at least Giese is pitching like a major leaguer

  638. The Real Original V

“Don’t blame Bobby. He is a great RF.”

Hey, SJ44, I have a feeling that your personal troll (you know, the moron who changes his name every 5 minutes to rag on you) is the same as my personal troll. They seem to pop up at the same time.

Of course, Pete won’t do anything about it.

  639. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Stuart that was bad baseball, no question.

But I am never ready to have someone beheaded because of a bad play. Sorry I can’t jump into the pile on. I happen to think Bobby is an excellent player.

  640. Arun

Where’s that Billy Martin in Girardi we thought we were getting? He needs to pull the lineup out of the hat and then permenatly move Abreu out of the 3 spot. If A-rod doesn’t want to take the bat off his shoulders he can hit third and draw walks for Giambi and Cano.

  641. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

BTW I wasn’t saying to bench Abreu for any length of time. Just for the remainder of today’s game since he made such a costly mistake. Although I will say that out of almost everyone on the team who makes any kind of bonehead play that costs us on the bases or in the field, Abreu is among the most likely to somehow make up for it later in the game.

  642. Sal

    stuart is a moron

  643. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

I’m trying to make a joke to one of Pete’s comments in an earlier game article.

I just found out, we’re 42-34 in games that Molina has played in, that includes games when he came in as a late inning catcher.

Anyway, it just kills me when a starter implodes and than the bullpen succeeds so much.

  644. Wangawa

Guise is a very adequate long man, but he’s not the answer as a starter. Maybe bring up Aceves for a couple starts and see how he does until Hughes is ready to go.

  645. Drew

He meant DH Abreu long term. Obviously.

  646. Phil- 27 in '08

Knee jerk reactions? Not with a veteran. Abreu knows it was stupid. Girardi will quietly pull him aside and speak with him.

  647. Global Warming

I’m a fan of the Martin doctrine. If you don’t play the game the right way, no matter what your numbers are, get your a$$ off the field.

Tagging from 2nd when it’s a fly ball to LF is about as dumb as it gets for a baseball player. No one is saying play Christian over Abreu for the rest of the season but it would of been reasonable to bench him for the rest of the game.

    Anyway, that ship has sailed.

  648. Wanderer

Good thing IPK has stunk this year. Not like we needed him or anything.

“Blaming Jeter on that? Seriously? If I’m a player ON ANY LEVEL OF BASEBALL, i don’t expect the retard on 2nd base to tag on fly ball to left field trying for 3rd. Have some of you ever played the game or do you just post in between your bong hits?”

Why was jeter looking behind him to see where the ball was going? That’s not exactly baseball 101 when tagging from third to home on a sac fly.

  651. SJ44

I don’t mean today idiot. Take a deep breath and think for a minute.

I was talking to Patrick about ways to get his glove, which is a liability, out of the lineup.

Not that hard to figure out if you think for a minute.

  652. V

Rasner is a solid #5 pitcher in a rotation. Not his fault he’s facing an ace today.

  653. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

How close is Hughes to coming back?

  654. Matt

Don’t blame Bobby? Are you kidding me?

I’ll sure blame Bobby for that. He got thrown out at THIRD when Jeter was a FOOT from home plate, and didn’t even TRY to let him score. Abreu’s dumb play cost us most likely any CHANCE of coming back. I’d say that’s a pretty big mistake.

I love you guys. You defend these guys to the death because of what they’ve “done” even if they screw up! It’s alright if Jeter hits into 15 DP’s in a row because he’s the captain and he won us a game 7 years ago in the world series woo hoo!

Players are accountable for their mistakes. They don’t get passes for plays as dumb as Abreu’s. I understand if that happens and Jeter still scores and it’s a close game where a wild pitch scores a run, but down 4, that’s inexcusable.

  655. Larry

PBL, I’m with you in that way too many of his critics are way over the top. He sucks?
That’s just ridiculous. He doesn’t suck, he’s a great player. However, there are warts. There are areas where SOME criticism is warranted.

  656. Matt

Smart move. DH him mid game.

  657. BBFan

There is something about Giese that he always pitches well evern against good teams.
May be he should be given the chance to start next in Rasner’s palce next time.

Stretch him out to three to four innings today and start him next. DFA Rasner (he can not be demoted) after the game and bring some one like Patterson to help the bullpen.

  658. Guiseppe Franco

    SJ,

My only point was that the Yanks might not want to throw Kennedy into the fire against LA next weekend.

But I do think he deserves another chance sooner rather than later.

  659. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Know what’s almost more frustrating than Bobby’s baserunning blunder? Girardi’s slow hook on Ras. Giese really looks like an effective long man (although as I type this, he just walked Reggie Willits, yikes). Why not bring him in when there is still a chance to win the game? Before a 3 run deficit turns into a 5?

  660. Matt

“Why was jeter looking behind him to see where the ball was going? That’s not exactly baseball 101 when tagging from third to home on a sac fly.”

Uh, because maybe if the throw is say towards a certain side of home plate, he can slide around the tag? It’s called using his brain, something Abreu forgot to do.

Why in god’s name are you blaming Jeter for that? Are you not paying any attention? JETER WAS RUNNING ALMOST FULL SPEED.

  661. yankeenate

seriously, if Rasner gets another start…Girard should be fired. Go find someone to fill his start.

  662. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Look on the bright side: Next weekend, Joba will face LA.

  663. DFox

stuart, do me a favor. Make a reasonable attempt for the words you throw into a post to form some coherent sentences. Every single post you write makes little to no sense.

Abreu might have made a stupid mistake, but you make a stupid mistake every single time you press the “Submit Comment” button. Usually there’s a bunch of them.

  664. WeMissPaulie

Honesty, I think we’re going to win this.

  665. Ray

Lackey may throw 90 pitches in 9 today.

  666. SJ44

    Original V,

    Exactly. Its the same dude.

    Patrick,

I’m not debating the merits of him as a player. After this season, I wouldn’t resign him.

Now, with no viable replacement (unless they go Damon to LF and Nady to RF the rest of the way), they can’t sit him.

They could but, that would make their already fading playoff hopes pretty much go out the window. Especially since he leads the team in RBI, the league in RBI with 2 outs, and has been their hottest hitter since the Break.

  667. Donnie S

“stuart, do me a favor. Make a reasonable attempt for the words you throw into a post to form some coherent sentences. Every single post you write makes little to no sense.”

You got more of a shot to see the Yanks score 5 runs vs Lackey.

  668. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

You have to blame Bobby for that play. No question.

  669. Larry

Abreu isn’t looking at Jeter as he’s running.
He can’t make that exact judgement that I should hold up, get into a rundown, whatever, so Jeter’s run counts. He’s running as hard as he can to get to third as quickly as he can. If you tag up on a fly like that, you have to know it’s going to be close at third.

  670. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Knee jerk reactions? Not with a veteran. Abreu knows it was stupid. Girardi will quietly pull him aside and speak with him.”

Of course he knows it was stupid, but what sort of example does it set for youngsters like Melky and Cano when Girardi just lets it slide? That’s what I’m more worried about. The two of them do a lot of dumb things on the bases and in the field too, and seeing that veteran teammates can get away with similarly horrific mistakes offers no motivation for Melky to, say, stop sliding headfirst into base.

  671. sdjohn

E-Man, what does it matter? Looking behind him or not. He was running home and didn’t expect Abreu to go. When he looked back and saw Abreu going he was probably in effin shock. Take another bong hit dude.

  672. Gary

Sj is a total quitter. If he says its over it ain’t.

  673. Moshe Mandel

Abreu needs to get a hit here. Must.

  674. Yoyo Ma

“How close is Hughes to coming back?”

That thud you just heard was Trisha jumping off the Rasner bandwagon :)

  675. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Come on Bobby make up for it like Betemit did yesterday.

  676. DFox

“You got more of a shot to see the Yanks score 5 runs vs Lackey.”

Ha, for the sake of everyone here, lets hope both of those happen.

  677. E-Dog

Abreu and A-Rod. The two best players when you are up 5 runs.

  678. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    Come on Bobby…ATONE!!!

  679. stuart

there is trisha with some more blind stupid loyalty.. I appreciate Abreu’s 5 HR’s this week but how does that make his stupid play acceptable?? Again it was a stupid play therefore avoidable.. Imagine if he still hit the 5 HR’s and did not make the stupid base running play????

What a concept….. The just overall approval of bad baseball is astounding.. Someone posted the ANgels have not really done much this weekend but succeeding because of the Yankee faults.I cannot agree more. Good teams let bad teams beat themselves.. Manny Ramirez a great palyer has 3 walkoff HR’s in his career.. GReat plays most often do not win games but bad plays by the competition allow the other tam to win….

Almost all the teams in the AL stink, they have more then 1 weakness.. Boston the pen and bottom of the order, yanks starting pitching and terrible situational hitting, tampa a bad lineup and questionable overproducing pen, etc..

the angels are not a great team they are better then all the ompetition because they have no weakness.

good lineup, great pitching, starting and late inning pen, great speed, and very good fielding.. not real complicated limit your teams weaknesses, be good at everything no need to be great and you win a ton of games…

  680. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

You think you can shorten your swing Jack-Rod

  681. Matt

    Larry,

Once he sees that he’s out by a mile, which he saw because he stood there and walked right into the tag, he has to turn around and make sure the run scores. Abreu didn’t even try to avoid the tag. At least jump or something. Even that weak attempt at dodging scores the run.

And look at that. If they score that run on the sac fly, the game looks ENTIRELY different right now. The tying run would have been at the plate.

So here we go. A-Rod, first and 3rd, no outs, AGAIN. We better score some runs.

  682. sdjohn

    Deja vu all over again!

  683. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

why are we still talking about that play? It was an awful base running play by Bobby Abreu, he made the 3rd out at third base AND stopped a run from scoring + we would’ve had first and second with 2 outs. end of story

A-Rod is up with first and third and he’s going to catch one of these fastballs and put it in a gap

  684. Moshe Mandel

Come on. Here we flipping go. If they dont score both these guys, I am putting the remote straight through the TV.

  685. Larry

And, as a runner, you don’t look back like Jeter did on that play. The on deck hitter should tell you whether to slide or not. Looking back costs you speed

  686. Hooney

SJ44, tell us all what the Yanks need to do to make a run.

  687. t

Well heres A-Rods chance to redeem himself. Same situation, again with jeter on third & abreau on first no one out. Arods at 253 with RISP, Jeter 303.

  688. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

How about your 800th career homer against the Angels, A-Rod?

  689. Arun

FInally a good swing at least

  690. Zooboy

The Angels have A-Rod just where they want him.

  691. OO

    These multimillionaires have no heart.

  692. PBL

Larry, I agree with you. I think he plays below his talent level in pressure situations and I don’t think he is as good of teammate as he could be, based on what i’ve seen. but there is no way you can sanely argue we aren’t a much better team with him than without him, as some of these clowns do.

  693. Fredo Corleone

Ouch! Strike 1 was a fatty down broadway Arod fouled off.

  694. Underdog

yeah whatever, we aren’t gonna score this inning.

  695. romine

man it seems arod is always in 0-2 every ab

  696. Angel

A-Rod stinks. He can’t hit with runners on.

  697. DFox

stuart, are you sure the Angels are better than all the ompetition? I don’t know about that. Some of the ompetition is pretty tough. I mean I think a team like the Yankees is full of ompetitors.

  698. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Didn’t A-Rod hit like .320 with RISP last year?

These things fluctuate from year to year. There is a lot more chance involved here than you guys want to admit.

  699. Arun

    Come on A Rod!

  700. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Stuart, calm down. I didn’t call it acceptable. I just don’t flip out over mistakes in games. Now leave it okay.

And yeah I’m loyal. And also understanding of the human condition. Mistakes happen.

  701. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

finally a good AB w/ RISP from you !

  702. V

A-Rod is the best player on the planet. Relax.

  703. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    GO-MER!

    GO-MER!

    GO-MER!

  704. Matt

Oh crap Giambi is up with the bases loaded. This is why it’s tough having him as the #5 hitter if he’s not hitting for average right now.

  705. Someone Else

Well, it wasn’t a hit, but I’ll take it.

  706. Bad Scooter

    Clutch AB, down 0-2.

  707. stuart

good ab by arod. very well done. no need to be a hero

  708. Larry

Better than an out, Alex, that’s for sure.

  709. mel

Can we make this count? Please?

  710. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

A-Rod passes the baton to Jason.

Good AB by Alex. Down 0-2, he watched four clear balls sail by. Nothing he could hit, and he didn’t try.

  711. Moshe Mandel

Good AB- would be nice for Giambi to break out of it here.

  712. Arun

OK. ARod. Now watch Giambi perform better as a clutch hitter period.

  713. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

    Double Play candidate

  714. Zooboy

Meachum needs to tell Bobby not to try and steal third with Jeter on the bag.

  715. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“stuart, are you sure the Angels are better than all the ompetition? I don’t know about that. Some of the ompetition is pretty tough. I mean I think a team like the Yankees is full of ompetitors.”

    :D

  716. Yankee Trader

Giambi – take the walk, and let Nady finish off Lackey

  717. Someone Else

    That. Was. A. Dumb. Swing.

    Idiot.

  718. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

    DAMMIT JASON !

  719. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Get.

    Giambi.

    out.

    of the five spot.

  720. Wander

    Are you kidding?

  721. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Ugh. Double ugh. Triple ugh.

Jason, what the hell are you doing?

  722. Matt

    GIAMBI, WAKE UP

2-0 count, he just walked the previous hitter, WHY ARE YOU SWINGING?

These are the at bats that lose you the game. HORRIBLE AT BAT.

TAKE HIM OUT OF THE 5 HOLE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

  723. Moshe Mandel

That is the worst job by Giambi ever- pathetic, just pathetic. Here comes the DP.

  724. Arun

    Bad break

  725. joe

    Career vs J. Lackey 12-31

    cmon giambino, you own lackey

  726. jr

why is giambi swinging there? now here comes the double play. a jeterian double play.

  727. Bad Scooter

    Kennedy dealing through 6. 87 pitches – 60 strikes.
    5H 1ER 1BB 6K

  728. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

this is why he is not getting a contract next year.

  729. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Please Yankees. Do something here. Don’t let Gomer off the ropes.

  730. Yankee Trader

Giambi he hasn’t been throwin strikes. Take some more pitches.

  731. Russell NY

    Giambino is pathetico.

  732. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

I still don’t know what happened to A-Rod. Last yr he was clutch from the 7th inning and on. Now he’s just sucked.

And now, it’s deja vu with Nady up in the same situation.

  733. Zooboy

    He needs a shave.

  734. Lukas M.

Giambi is cooked. I cant wait till his corpse is off our roster.

  735. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) (X-factor my ***)

Come on Nady, I swear I’ll take the Nady header off !

  736. Yankeefanfoev13

    giambi u suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  737. Matt

Same nonsense as always. They have him on the ropes, and they chase a pitcher’s pitch to bail him out. JUST TAKE THE PITCH.

So you’re scared of hitting 2-1? Give me a freaking break Giambi. You haven’t hit a ball out of the infield with any authority in weeks. You have no right to swing there.

  738. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Honestly, is there a guy that offers better protection to A-Rod than Jason in the lineup? I mean, you can’t bat Nady 5th against righties. If Matsui or Posada were still playing, I’d suggest them, but they aren’t. And Cano’s slumping again. So what do you do?

  739. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

And people wonder why A-Rod never gets anything good to hit with men on. Giambi is an easy out even vs Lackey who he has had success against!

  740. DFox

    NADY!!!!

  741. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    YEAH X!

  742. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    THANK YOU X !!!

  743. Someone Else

    NADY!!!

  744. Matt

See guys. That’s why Nady hits 5th, not Giambi.

  745. AROD(kROD)

NADY YA BABY GIAMBI U SUCK

  746. Moshe Mandel

    Huge!!!!!! Nady!!!!!

  747. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    THE CLUTCHOSITY!

    HITTING WHEN IT COUNTS!

  748. Russell NY

    I love Nady.

  749. Tseng

Yay! Nady delivers. Now that sac fly mess-up really hurts us.

  750. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Angels caught a huge break there, would have easily been a bases clearing hit had that not gone over.

  751. TKinDC

    w00t!

    Way to go X!

  752. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Damn! That would have been bases clearing.

    But I’ll take it!

    :)

  753. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

    X-Man…HELLUVA pickup

  754. Confucius

    Flashbacks of Sheff & Bubba!

I told you all to just give X time.

  755. S

    Thank God for Xavier Nady.

    I mean, seriously.

  756. joe

    x-man strikes again

  757. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

METS sux for givng up on him

  758. Wander

Impressive stuff from Nady, he’s becoming one of our clutch players already.

  759. Bad Scooter

    X Man is a beast.

  760. Yankee Trader

Yes you can bat Nady 5th against righties!!!

  761. fausto

    Score THANK YOU JESUS!

  762. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

Move X up in this line up !

  763. Russell NY

    It is a miracle!

  764. stuart

DFox at present the angels are the best team october I have no idea.. that is a lifetime from now

  765. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    GO-MER!

    GO-MER!

    GO-MER!

Nice job by your guy eh Ricky Bobby?

  766. Moshe Mandel

All I want is a sac fly.

  767. MikeEff ( GO GAMMONS)

    X FACTOR NOW BRANDON

  768. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    Xavier’s bringin sexy back!!

  769. E-Man

“E-Man, what does it matter? Looking behind him or not. He was running home and didn’t expect Abreu to go. When he looked back and saw Abreu going he was probably in effin shock. Take another bong hit dude”

Because it’s always the little things that lose games.

  770. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

“See guys. That’s why Nady hits 5th, not Giambi.”

IF you believe that Nady is anywhere near this good a hitter. I’m not convinced.

It’s a worth a shot, though, at least until Giambi heats up.

  771. AROD(kROD)

    abc ball good job

  772. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    good AB Bet

  773. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

…We’ve cut it to one run.

    This is a game yet.

  774. Someone Else

“METS sux for givng up on him”

I think it was less ‘giving up on Nady’ than buying low on Perez (and they needed a bullpen arm).

  775. Tseng

Yup… really wish we had that sac fly run about now.

  776. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Nice job by Wilson.

See that’s how you do it with one out. You do NOT need to hit it out.

    GO WILSON!

  777. Global Warming

Nady isn’t accustomed to laying down to the Angels, hence the big day.

  778. Moshe Mandel

    If Jeter scores before……

  779. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    come on Pudge !

  780. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Pudge is due for a multi-homerun game

  781. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

Your TV is safe, Moshe. All three runs in.

And Pudge with a chance to tie it.

  782. V

All the quitters can now shut up. Thank you.

  783. AROD(kROD)

    GIAMBI SUCKS

  784. stuart

yeah the Abreu base running mistake does not matter because afterall he has been hot at the plate(thinking of dumb fan).

    just play good baseball..

  785. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

I heart Nady a lot and hope he becomes a long term part of this team.

  786. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

cmon iVAN MAKE UP for ur mistakes

  787. Matt

This is what we got Pudge for. Let’s see if he can focus and make sure he hits a good pitch.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they just walked him. Melky is sure to swing at the first pitch and ground out weakly with a runner at 3rd .

  788. Larry

And yeah I’m loyal. And also understanding of the human condition. Mistakes happen

That’s my problem with much of the criticism here. People automatically equate performance wih effort or heart. If they don’t play well it’s because they don’t care.

It’s hard to hit a baseball. Mechanics are off a smidgen and you’re lost. Arod in the playoffs is a perfect example. It’s not a lack of effort or caring. He cares, plenty.

Don’t misunderstand, it can be very exasperating and frustrating, but I’m not disgusted or morally outraged by, for example, Giambi today. He’s trying, but he’s a human being, not a robot. Abreu was trying when he got thrown out.

  789. joe

oh no don’t walk I-Rod, melky on deck x.x

  790. Tseng

I kinda wish Ivan didn’t walk. I don’t have much confidence at Melky at the moment… but I really hope he can deliver here!

  791. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    good AB Pudge… Melky I swear !

  792. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Take a picture. Pudge walks.

    Lackey is melting down.

  793. jr

here comes the melkman to end this inning. quick, swing at that pitch over your head again! a 5 run hr!

  794. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    Come on Da Melk!

Don’t swing at the first one unless it’s a great one to hit!

  795. Russell NY

    Melky up, inning over.

  796. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    …Pudge walks?? Really??

  797. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Just out of curiosity, is Austin Jackson a LF or CF or RF? I’m asking because of the future. Damon and Matsui and Nady will be FAs after the 2009 season and Abreu is a FA after this yr.

  798. Tseng

Melky shouldn’t swing until he gets 2 called on him. Lackey’s losing it… I hope he gets walked.

  799. Yankee Trader

Way to go Cabrera 4 for 25.

  800. t

    Worthless. Melky.

  801. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    Epic fail, Melky.

    Well, that helps.

  802. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

Melke is a DISGRACE to the Pinstripes.

  803. E-Man

    see the jogging becomes contagious

  804. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

Melky doesn’t look like a Yankee

  805. WeMissPaulie

Melky is a total letdown this year.

  806. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

I’d rather have Christian out there instead of Melky

  807. Matt

How anybody can defend Melky’s at bats anymore is beyond my understanding. He has looked so bad at the plate, and this is not something new, he’s been hitting .230 over a period of THREE MONTHS.

  808. Tseng

Top of the order next inning at least.

  809. S

We all really want that run now…

Lackey looks like he’s done. Angel’s bullpen now?

  810. Vrsce

Get Cano back; perhaps IPK and dump the Melkman.

  811. Igawa's buck teeth

How is Melky on this team? What a bum!

  812. romine

    Austin Jackson is a CF

  813. stuart

    get Edwar warming up…

again on Melky at least have a good AB…

nah the Abreu play has no affect on the game..

let’s see if the woulda coulda shoulda club can complete the comeback……..

they have not done it often this year, but you never know…

  814. BBFan

So now we have three innings to win this game.
Also, Yanks bat well against Frankie.
So, there a good chance we will win this game.
Frist bullpen needs to hold them from further scoring.

I fervently hope that the Pudge haters will ease up now. He’s playing very well today. Players who are new to the Yankees, even when they’re top 3 all time at their positions, should always get some leeway for a short period of adjustment. Nady had his and now Pudge looks like his is about to be past tense too.

I mean, he walked? That’s even more outrageous than Cano walking!

    Hold em here Giese!

  816. t

Why not sit melky and see how Christian plays? If he performs keep him in, if not put melky back in.

  817. TKinDC

Lackey treated Melky like we should have schooled Willets all day long.

We’re right back in it though.

  818. Obama loves Terrorism

    man, this is awesome.
Soon enough, we’ll get Hughes and is 104mph fastball (oh wait, that wasn’t real?) for a few weeks before another hip, or shoulder problem.
Then maybe, Kennedy and his amazing command (in A ball) for awhile.
Or maybe not. And wefinish in third place with a plus 200M payroll.

How much is that up now anyhow? 210? 220?
    Oh who cares. ha.

Here we go Rasner, here we go.

  819. Vrsce

Even Trisha must admit that Melky is way out of his element against major league pitching.

  820. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

This is the same Lackey who almost no hit the Sux and these are the same Angels that swept the Sux.

    Just pointin out.

  821. Underdog

back in the game! that is, until Angels get those runs right back this inning.

  822. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“nah the Abreu play has no affect on the game..”

Yawn, I was just as mad at Abreu as anyone else for that one, but he is 2-3 and we wouldn’t just have gotten within 1 run if it weren’t for him, so pipe down.

  823. stuart

Larry, yeah abreu may have been trying when he got thrown out at 3rd but it was a stupid play…..

the point is it was stupid, not because of effort…..

  824. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

O_O Angels fans must be mad at Tex

he hasn’t done jack but walk

  825. DFox

Wow, if Giese had started this game it wouldn’t have even been close. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many hitters take such awful swings.

  826. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Lackey treated Melky like we should have schooled Willets all day long.”

Man, does it ever pain my soul that Melky has become our version of Reggie Willits.

I mean, you’re definitely right, it just pains my soul.

  827. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Vrse Melky’s hitting (or lack thereof) is really awful.

So that is why I am so thankful for his defense.

If he had nothing at all going on for us I could be pretty bereft.

  828. TKinDC

OK – I’m no einstein – but the boxscore for the SWB game has IPK giving up 2 earned runs and the score is 3-1 with Scranton ahead.

    Can someone help me out?

  829. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

IPK just gave up a solo homer in the 7th 3-2 swb

  830. Confucius

“Soon enough, we’ll get Hughes and is 104mph fastball (oh wait, that wasn’t real?) for a few weeks before another hip, or shoulder problem.”

104mph fastball? Hip problem? Shoulder problem? This is all supposed to apply to Hughes somehow?

Are you sure your posting handle shouldn’t say ‘Osama?’ You seem confused.

  831. SJ44

This kid Arrogondo who will most likely pitch the 7th for the Angels is the guy they believe will be their closer next year. They aren’t going to re-sign Krod and this is the guy they are grooming for the job.

    He’s got nasty stuff.

I really thought this would be a year Melky was going to give them a solid .280/75-80 RBI season. Especially after the start he had in the first 6 weeks of the season.

Unfortunately, I think those early HR’s made him think he is a more power, rather than contact, hitter.

His swing got too long and violent and he’s been getting himself out for most of the season.

He still plays a solid CF. He just can’t hit.

  832. fausto

How can anyone defend jeter’s play?

  833. RayBlay

solo HR in 7th he gave up made it 3-2

  834. Obama loves Terrorism

    Trisha –

Thats the stupidest comment anyone has ever made. Different teams, different days, and different conditions.

I’m an angels fan, so I’m happy about the Boston thing, but trust me, I’d rather face NY every day of the week. Even without Manny. The five years should tell you that.

  840. Obama loves Terrorism

    Confu –

I’m referring to last nights gamer when everyone was proclaiming that Hughes was hitting a hundred on the gun, and all giddy about the fact that hem might throwing over 90, and finally live up to that hype that the brass had him at.
And yeah, leg, shoulder, hip, hamstring. Whatever. I got the body parts wrong, but the result is the same: lots of time on DL. ha.

  841. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Why not move Nady to CF next yr and resign Abreu. Than let go Giambi and sign Teixeira. Damon/Matsui will be the LF and Matsui/Damon will be the DH. Melky as a bench player. Or you could move Damon back to CF and keep Nady in LF, and once Jackson is up he’ll be the CF.

    /future plans

  843. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

How about the job done by Dan Giese?

  844. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

SJ his name is Arrendando and yes he’s the glue and likely the successor to K-Rod

  845. Obama loves Terrorism

    Change my name?

Why? Because you don’t agree with my political stance? Obama does love terrorism and the countries where they reside.
But alas, You’re a great American, man. I have nothing but love for you.

  846. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“I’m an angels fan, so I’m happy about the Boston thing, but trust me, I’d rather face NY every day of the week. Even without Manny. The five years should tell you that.”

Angel’s fan, I’ll see you and raise you one:

Different teams, different days, and different conditions – AND DIFFERENT YEARS.

  847. V

I still think Rasner is a solid major league pitcher.

  848. Matt

This is the way the Yankees always used to come back that we hadn’t had this year.

You have to prevent the other team from tacking on put away runs. If you can keep it at 4 or 5 for many innings in a row, the offense has a chance, but if the lead swells to 10, you’re done.

  849. TKinDC

    Wonderful job by Giese!

The longman role is tough to fill competently – he’s done a much better job than I expected.

  850. Larry

Stuart, it was stupid baserunning. You’ll get no argument from me there.

  851. Bombshell

Dan Giese = Aaron Small in the ‘pen

  852. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef]

    WE WILL TIE IT!

  853. Monday

Obama DOES love terrorism. The guy is a socialist.

  854. SJ44

Nady is not a CF. Austin Jackson is a natural CF. Nady is a corner OF. He doesn’t have the wheels to play CF.

  855. Confucius

“I got the body parts wrong, but the result is the same”

No … rib and leg injuries are not the same as shoulder injuries for a pitcher. They are in different galaxies.

  856. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Giese could take Rasner’s spot next time around. Giese threw 66 pitches in Joba’s first start, 75 pitches in a start vs Cincinatti, 97 pitches in game 1 in the doubleheader vs the Mets, and 65 pitches in his outing vs the Redsox a week ago.

  857. Adam

keep politics out of this please, its a baseball blog. nobody cares who any of you support

  860. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Larry, I don’t think there is anyone one this forum who has said it wasn’t stupid baserunning. I think where we may disagree is on whether or not Abreu needs to be traded because of that play – if you get my point.

  861. fausto

This is a sports blog not a political one.You are entitled to your opinnion, but who cares what you think about Obama.

Why didn’t Joe bring in Giese sooner?

  862. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Can we keep the politics off the blog? Please?

    Would appreciate it.

  863. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

And SJ, than switch Damon back to CF and Matsui as the DH in 2009 and keep Nady a corner outfielder. This is assuming we resign Abreu. If we don’t, than Damon in LF, Melky in CF, and Nady in RF and Matsui the DH

  864. Obama loves Terrorism

    “liberal NYC site”

Well, that would explain the problems there now wouldn’t it.

Maybe after Obama takes over, which won’t happen because it’s going to be a Ronnie type landslide (you can only count on the poor and the young until election day, then it’s too hard for them to get up and get to the booth) we can change the name to NYAACPC?

Bodes well for our final record.

  870. SJ44

I’d keep Giese right where he is, in long relief.

Its a tough role and he does it well. You can replace Rasner (if they so choose) with better candidates.

Starting is an entirely different animal and his success as a starter was mixed. He’s a much better long guy than starter.

I don’t believe in moving guys out of roles in which they excel. That doesn’t make the team better.

  871. Ron (President of the Wilson Betemit Fan Club)

    HA!

  895. Bad Scooter

All the whiners take that. Down 5-0 against Lackey and tie it up.

  896. BBFan

If the Yanks win this game, I think Ranser will pitch his next turn. I doubt they will call up any one to face Lackey. Rasner did not have the right home plate umpire today, who had a very narrow strike zone. So, he may have better luck next time.

  897. Confucius

“Right on, Ill refrain from the politcal stuff, and concentrate on the fact that we get to play NY more and more the rest of the year..

He’ll shut down the Angels. As for the 5-run deficit, I’m just not worried about it. I’m going to put my cards on the table and predict that Pudge will get things started and then the X-Man will have a few things to say before it’s said and done. You can quote me on that.”

    You’re welcome.

  992. Confucius

    Observe.

    This is a bullpen.

  993. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Trisha. Do not listen to the negative defeatists like SJ44. This game proves that.”

Gordo – never do. That’s what upsets the negative defeatists here, that I don’t lose any equilibrium on a pitch-by-pitch basis.

It’s a lot better to maintain equilibrium. I think it makes moments like this, when we take the lead, so much more enjoyable than if you’ve had to down mylanta for the whole game, and then try to rally enough to enjoy a good moment.

    Just sayin…

    ;)

  994. Arun

    New Lineup:

    1) Damon
    2) Jeter
    3) Rodriguez (if he doesn’t want to take the bat off his shoulders, he can take walks if the pitchers would rather face the big G.
    4) The Stache
    5) X Man
    6) Robbie/Abreu
    7) I Rod
    8) Robbie/Abreu
    9) Cabrera/Gardner (let him develop here)

Edwar has really proved the doubters wrong.

  997. Michael T

Waiting for Pete A to weigh in on how useless Edwar, the One Trick Pony is…

  998. Timmy Lupus

Just think if Andy was Andy in game 1 we would have taken 3/4.

  999. Confucius

Edwar has been going back to his freakish minor league form. Unbelievable.

    Veras, Edwar, Marte, Mo

All capable of devouring both lefties and righties. And we haven’t seen Melancon yet.

  1000. Matt

A split against a team like the Angels in a 4 game series is all they could ask for, and if they won that 1-0 game they should have, it would have even been 3/4. This was a statement series and I think they made their statement today. Hopefully this makes them believe they can come back against anyone and wakes up the offense.

  1001. Don

trisha is the best poster here. Her optimism and never say die attitude is a treat.

The negative quitters should take note of her.

1002. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Off Topic, but Liriano at 6ip 3 hits 0 er 3 walks and 5k’s for the Twins today. Took long enough for them to call him up.

1003. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

1014. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

  1020. Confucius

“Off Topic, but Liriano at 6ip 3 hits 0 er 3 walks and 5k’s for the Twins today. Took long enough for them to call him up.”

Just long enough. They’re about to move into a first place tie. Keeping him in the minors cost them nothing. For a team like the Twins, it was right to keep him down as long as they could afford to. Now they have a pitching rotation that’s second to none in the AL with an ace who’s sure to give them 100% down the stretch.

Nice job by Girardi here, showing Edwar enough trust to get out of this. Last year, we’d see Mo a batter ago.

1021. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    come on EDWAR !

  1022. BBFan

On a side note, MLB did not schedule the hearing of his appeal yet.

The team will leave for the 10 game road trip tonight. So, Edwar will most likely be available for the whole road series.

  1023. Don

Keep doing what you are doing, Trisha. You are an inspiration. Don’t let the SJ’s and stuarts ever stop you.

  1024. Michael T

  1028. Matt

    The Yankees pitchers BEAT THEMSELVES.

WHY, WHY, WHY ARE YOU WALKING WEAK HITTERS WITH A 3 RUN LEAD?

Willits is hitting .185 with NO HR’s. NONE. His OPS is .556.

Aybar has walked 8 times in 200+ AB’s.

1029. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

that’s what happens when you walk a .180 hitter 4 times in the game. You give it away.

He’s pitched great but, that’s just a horrible, horrible job of pitching by Edwar. No excuses.

You go from the best win of the year to possibly the worst loss because you won’t throw a freaking strike to Reggie Willets. Unbelievable.

  1063. Matt

Any manager with a clue brings in Mo.

WHY WOULD YOU LET A GUY WHO GIVES UP HOME RUNS FACE A HOME RUN HITTER AS THE GO AHEAD RUN WHEN HE CANNOT THROW STRIKES.

Walking the #9 hitter has killed them all day. :(

  1072. Timmy Lupus

Honestly who didn’t see that coming a mile away? When Edwar loses the strike zone like that he always gives up the HR.

1073. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    crap crap crap

Edwar was released by these Angels he just problems vs them. You could tell he started to overthrow there, either way crap this one hurts :(

  1080. Bob(The Original)

I really can’t take much more this season.

  1081. WeMissPaulie

Tex is 5 for 6 against Marte.

Should have had Mo come in.

  1082. Stanny46

Somewhere in Detroit Farnsworth is smiling.

Would be a shame to waste this.

  1083. stuart

they are trying to sneak a inside fastball by Tex on that play!!!!!!!!!!!!

again the angels have played poorly and may win 3 of 4..

where was MO…. saving him for????I am not 2nd guessing I was yelling at the TV..

again woulda coulda should, if they lose a terrible terrible loss in a season of terrible loses……

throw a outside pitch he is not hitting that out..

this team is a head shaker.. PATHETIC.. .NAH THE ABREU BASERUNNING MISTAKE IS NO BIG DEAL SINCE HE IS 3 FOR 4…….

  1084. yankeenate

it remains beyond me why you don’t bring in rivera during this situation. any manager with a remote clue sees that ramirez doesn’t have it today and can’t locate his changeup. if he can’t locate that pitch he is nothing but BP.

Girardi is an absolute idiot of a manager with no sense in what to do. over and over his insticts are wrong. Clueless, clueless, clueless

  1085. Juggy

I dunno, ramirez struggling, you don’t take him out and put in your lefty specialist with bases loaded? Tex is batting .273 vs lefties, and .290 vs righties which suggests a weakness, not to mention the right field porch being so short..

Yet another bad call by Girardi.

  1086. Matt

If they lose this, they will have a tough time recovering. You came back down 5, and your idiot relief pitcher who won’t challenge the weakest hitters in the lineup gave it away.

Girardi blew it too. When he walked Aybar, you YANK HIM. YOU TAKE HIM OUT. He is vulnerable to long balls, is falling behind the count, just a stupid move.

If they lose this, it’s the WORST loss of the season, and it’s tough to recover from blowing one like this at home. They BETTER win this, or they’re going to really regret it.

  1087. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

I really want to break something right now. How do you keep Edwar in there, it is obvious he had lost all command. Ugh, if the Yankees let this one slip away I might be sick to my stomach.

  1088. E-Man

Why the Freak was Mo not in there? I can’t figure this guy out. What do you Girardi apologists have to say?

    let me guess..

    “It wasn’t Girardi’s fault, he wasn’t pitching”

  1089. R23

Now we will have all the quitters back and posting. Come on down, SJ44.

  1090. Pat M.

“Edwar has really proved the doubters wrong.”

You should really wait until the inning or a relief appearacne is over to post that opinion

    GD it!!!!

  1092. Michael T

That was gross negligence in bullpen management by Girardi for a game they really needed. Why let Texeria bat left-handed with the short porch against a homer-prone guy who can’t find the plate. Hell walk him and let Marte pitch to GA if you don’t think he can get a RH out. The guy is not a LOOGY only. Or MO can’t get 4 outs?

Rally against KRod would be nice, but almost an undeserved win after that debacle.

  1093. Bad Scooter

You can’t hate Edwar. He’s been unhittable of late. When he’s not getting his change over, hitters can sit on his mediocre fastball.

  1094. GreenBeret7

If you’re thinking “Why not Marte to pitch to Teixeira?”, because Teixeira is 5-6 against Marte.

  1095. Someone Else

“Any manager with a clue brings in Mo.

WHY WOULD YOU LET A GUY WHO GIVES UP HOME RUNS FACE A HOME RUN HITTER AS THE GO AHEAD RUN WHEN HE CANNOT THROW STRIKES.

YOU LOSE WITH YOUR BEST. BRING IN MO.”

That’s the 4th HR Edwar’s given up this year (AAA and Majors). Mo’s given up 3.

  1096. RSM

How do you walk two crappy hitters to have to pitch to Texiera with the bases loaded?????
    No excuse.
How many times do we have to let walks beat us before learning that lesson?

  1097. 38HotDogs

Fighting for their playoffs lives and you don’t bring in Mo for the 4 out save? If they lose this one it’s on Girardi

  1098. Steve

  1104. stuart

the low lights.. willets 4 BB’s.. 2 out no one on 7 2/3 they give up 3 straight baserunners and then a grand salami..

    this team is pathetic….

    I have Melky sacrifice…NOW

  1105. george

Edwar was wild today; still’s having a good year.

the problem is the manager, who just mismanaged a pennant race game situation stupidly. Mariano; or Marte to Figgins.
    definitely after Figgins.

Edwar had to come out after he walked Willets (sp?).

  1106. romine

    bunt melky

  1107. BBFan

1112. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

It looked like Ivan was trying to pitch Tex away but Edwar shook him off and tried to go inside. Oh well. Edwar has still done really well this year.

1115. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Only bring in Mo if you have a lead by 3 or fewer runs.

1116. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

Alright, this game isn’t over yet. Come on!

1117. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    Melky take a pitch

  1118. Bad Scooter

    Take two Melky.

  1119. stuart

do you take the 3 and 0 pitch?

  1120. Timmy Lupus

Forget about Marte you bring in MO for the 4 out save. We absolutely have to win this game.

  1121. Harry

Edwar is great in the 6 inning. Different game in the 8th.

1122. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    now bunt

  1123. Onxy

    WHY BUNT!!! STEAL A BASE!

  1124. AD

Gotta cut edwar a break. He’s overachieved all season. Girardi saw him struggling in the inning and didn’t pull him. That was a mistake on Girardi’s part.

But the bats have caught fire. We can still pull this one out. Pinch runner for pudge???

  1125. TKinDC

Anybody know why Oak v Bos is in delay?

    Hopefully lightning – nah – I won’t go there. :)

1126. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Justin Christian now. Here we go

  1127. E-Man

Are the Girardi apologists even watching this game? Edward was all over the place. There is absolutley no justification to leave him in there.. You get him out and bring in the guys who’s only given up 1 run in save situations all year. Let your best blow it.

  1133. YankeeJosh

I’m surprised irardi went to Edwar in the 8th over Veras or Marte. Still, once the tying run got up, Marte should have been facing Aybar. Edwar has a history of being prone to giving up long balls. However, given the stats vs Tex, leaving Edwar in to face him with Mo not warmed up yet was the right call.

  1134. Giambi's Stache

Magic time. This may still turn out to be the best win of the year.

If JC got thrown out there Girardi might not make it out of town alive.

  1161. drewsky

if we cant get this go ahead run god help us

  1162. Someone Else

Everyone who’s ever complained about the ‘Sit and wait for an HR’ Girardi Yankees, please apologize ;-)

  1163. Zooboy

    Yes!

1164. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Justin Christian and Xavier Nady are my heroes.

  1165. Confucius

Building a good bullpen means putting trust in your guys. You give guys too quick a hook, you pull away that trust. I support Joe leaving Edwar in there after the Figgins hit.

After walking Aybar to bring up one of their big power hitters? That would have been the time for a change that Edwar could not complain about. Joe chose to continue showing trust, and he paid for it. It was a big gamble, though understandable.

  1166. PBL

    fly ball should win it

  1167. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

I was just about to agree with that post and YES!!!!

    We tie the score.

    :D

  1168. Underdog

    please bunt please

  1169. Howard

    wow. just wow.

1170. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    YES!!

  1171. sw (The X-man Cometh)

Man, two errors for the Angels in one inning, the Yankees have got to win this one.

  1172. Indy

Can we get 5 runs here?

1173. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

Oh Scoscia is resulting to stalling I never saw him do this w/ Torre

  1174. Buzz

this is why u keep JC up here!!

  1175. Arun

FINALLY! Girardi makes a Bold Billy Move!

  1176. SJ44

Veras pitched yesterday and Marte is owned by Tex. The move he should have made was Mo for Tex.

But, when the guy hasn’t given up a hit since June 30, its hard to declare him awful. He isn’t.

That said, Girardi should have had Mo save him there.

If they can take the lead here, Mo would be fresh for the 9th.

Just how Girardi drew it up. lol

  1177. Someone Else

I would love to see a suicide squeeze here.

  1178. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Uhh Mike, you have no complaint. That strikezone has been just as inconsistent for the Yankees.

  1179. Vrsce

    Girardi makes things happen.

  1180. E-Dog

    Tied!

1181. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef]

lol Christian fell down again going to 3rd but it helped.

  1182. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Please DJ – Get your competitive juices at peak right now and BRING IN THIS RUN!

1183. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

This is where I wouldn’t mind a DP for Jeter right now as long as Melky scores.

  1184. TKinDC

“We played our hearts out. Win or lose.”

True – it would kinda be more fun if we WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    lol

  1185. Zooboy

    Squeez?

  1186. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Wow, I always told my Mariner fan friend that he was crazy when he said the Angels infield defense was an accident waiting to happen. Maybe he was onto something after all though we’ve certainly seen them make a lot of good plays too.

  1187. Buzz

    DP jeter cmon !!!

  1188. Michael T

    I’ll even take a DJGIDP(TM).

  1189. Angel

Edwar R just wanted a W on his record.

  1190. Arun

    That’s waht I’m talkin’ ’bout.

  1191. AD

I just said the DP word out loud and knocked on ten pieces of wood!

  1192. GreenBeret7

NM, Teixreia hits the ball hard against Marte, and, obviously, there wasn’t enough time to warm up Rivera. It happened to fast.

  1193. Larry

Let me amend what I said earlier today. Christian is at least as fast as either Damon or Abreu. I had forgotten about him.
He’s not Gardner fast, but he’s got excellent speed.

  1194. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

Could’ve been a nice time to SQUEEZE, no?

  1195. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

No, Edwar isn’t the terrible, just had the worst moment to have a bad moment. But he’s still been great this year overall.

  1196. drewsky

can $65 MM buy a run? (next 3 batters)

  1197. Uggie

Jeter has not been Jeter this yr.

  1198. Buzz

    3 run HR?

  1199. romine

lets score before they bring in k-rod

1200. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

I’ll be alright with a GIDP here as long as the run comes in

  1201. Michael T

To whoever asked, there were nasty stormclouds brewing in Beantown.

  1202. kd

wow a yankee manager outmanaging scioscia

1203. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef]

    Jeter = Declining Capt.

  1204. Someone Else

Way to send Damon there – I agree with that 100%

  1205. NM

“NM, Teixreia hits the ball hard against Marte, and, obviously, there wasn’t enough time to warm up Rivera. It happened to fast.”

Because a left hand power hitter vs a guy who can’t find the strike zone is good?

1206. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

    I COULD KILL YOU ! (j/k)

1207. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

    Abreu can redeem himself again

  1208. Moshe Mandel

    Come on Derek.

  1209. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Well at least we didn’t have an out. Still a chance to plate a run here…

  1210. Michael T

I’d walk Abreu and go for the K against Arod.

  1211. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

Damn, Jetes is a SS “Wet Dream” this year…

  1212. V

We may need a new SS next year.

  1213. SamVA

we are screwed if Mo has to pitch in a tie game

1214. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

Alex I swear you better shorten that damn swing in this next AB

  1215. Jeff NJ

For Jeter that wasn’t that bad. Bad time to say this, but here’s my lineup for tomorrow:

    Jeter
    Damon
    A Rod
    Abreu
    Nady
    Giambi
    I Rod
    Cano
    Melky

  1216. YankeeJosh

    SJ,

My argument is that you bring Marte in for Aybar, who is the tying run. That buys you some time to get Mo throwing. If Aybar gets a hit, then you have Mo for Tex.

Still, that was a big time hit for Teixeira, yet another reason I’d love him on the Yanks next year.

  1217. Andy

The ground ball machine. Derek Jeter.

  1218. Vrsce

Scioscia may have an equal in Girardi.

  1219. Vrsce

Scioscia may have an equal in Girardi.

  1220. PBL

uggie, i definitely agree jeter does not look himself this year. i wonder if this is the beginning of a permanent decline or if his struggles are due to some injury (heard he had an injured hand) he’s playing through

1221. Matt - NYY fan in Boston

Jeter’s been really bad since he got hit in the hand earlier this season

  1222. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Mo in a tie game? Noooooo

  1224. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

    Sac Fly, Bobby…Sac Fly.

1225. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Farnsworth in for the 8th up 3-1 over the Rays.

  1226. Underdog

Jeter, damn you. Pray for a double play and you don’t get it. Life, how sad.

  1227. Wangawa

We need to get these go ahead runs in. Mo in tie games = AAAAHHHHHHHHH

  1228. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

    COME ON BOBBY!

1229. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

  1232. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

  1233. Uggie

Jeter is getting old. It happens to the best of them.

  1234. YankeeJosh

Well, at least we don’t have Giambi to kill us in the 5 spot now, right? :)

  1235. Michael T

    I call a Sacfly.

  1236. romine

AROD gonna come through they have to go after him now.

  1237. Matt

Here you go. Let’s see if A-Rod can get it done in the CLUTCH!

  1238. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Actually I would have preferred for Bobby to plate a run than for there to be potential for a DP here…

  1246. Jeff NJ

wow the defense has royally failed the halos tonight. Good to see the best team on the planet look mortal.

  1247. PBL

so uncharacteristic of the angels to look so sloppy and give the game away with errors like they’ve made this inning

  1248. Confucius

Seeing Shields that angry is ecstasy.

  1249. Tseng

Uhhhh, the Yanks better be careful. They’ve used up all their luck for the next few days. Watch out for falling meteorites and whatnot.

  1250. TKinDC

Thank God for making me a Yankee fan!

    :)

  1251. Vrsce

    Angels in the infield

  1252. Angel

  1253. Buzz

  1255. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

    LUCKY…but we’ll take it, baby!!!

  1256. SJ44

The Yankee Stadium ghosts messed with that groundball.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  1257. JR Yankees

Atleast Figgins is doing his best to let us win this game after torturing us for 4 games in a row. Thanks Figgy!

    C’mon Yankees, seal this up.

  1258. kidjock

that would not have been 2. maybe, the ball was hit hard. do you think alex beats that throw? of course he does right?

  1259. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Wow, so much for the vaunted Angels defense. It certainly hasn’t been as stellar as it normally is today. Arod caught a break there.

  1260. Zooboy

How unclutch by the thirdbaseman — both of them!

1261. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Lead off homer for the Farns haha.

  1262. mel

    Wow. How un-Angels like.

  1263. Howard

  1266. Wangawa

The Angels playing sloppy defense? I thought I’d never see the day

  1267. jay destro

ive never seen such poorly played defense by a mike scioscia team than this game

  1268. stuart

a rod got lucky on that one a inning ending DP.. again usuallly the team loses the game a team does not win the game.. Look at the bottom of the 8th the angels look like the yanks.

the yanks need more runs.. if they bring in a lefty against sexson they are crazy….

1269. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef]

Without two PERFECT throws, he beats it out.

1273. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

I swear Mercer must have kicked Figgins’ glove there.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to that.

  1274. Larry

What’s the old expression? I’d rather be lucky than good. Yankees lucked out there.
That was a tailor made dp ball.

  1275. T D

A-Rod gets wayy too much grief here.

  1276. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“Lead off homer for the Farns haha.”

Not quite as funny as you would think seeing they’re playing the Rays.

  1277. romine

Yanks just look like they want it more

  1278. gayle

This game of baseball really is a great game. It will bring you to the highest of highs then back down to the lowest of lows then bring you right back up again. Everyone says that the pace of the game, the slowness of the game is what makes it such a bad game compared to other sports but in actuality it is because the innings take so long and it is not so quick paced that these ebbs and flows have such impact.

  1279. Buzz

    where is mo?

  1280. Podder

Would it kill A-Rod to get a big hit?

  1281. Terry #1

    Wow,

Great for the Yankees but I feel sorry for shields.

Damnit, Farnsy just game up 3 runs (2 HRs) in the 8th to the Rays and now they are on the way to winning.

  1362. fausto

Looks like Nady put a spark in this team. He’s hitting better than the “best player ” in baseball Arod~

  1363. TKinDC

We’re treating the Angels like Mickey Rourke treated Lisa Bonnet in Angel Heart (yes, it is a reach – but a great watch!) :)

  1364. DFox

Wow, leadoff HR in Tampa game, tied again!!!

  1365. mel

Those matchups look pretty good. Of course they still have to play the games, but it’s nice when Joba starts off the series to set the tone.

Still not happy with the walks all day and the granny from Edwar, but love the offense.

    Nady= POG

1366. Nick in SF but now in Pikesville, MD

Folks, I don’t want to jinx anything but I feel positive about the eventual outcome of this game. I’m off to get some Berger Cookies on the way to the airport, goodbye, good luck, and go Yankees!

  1367. Fresh

“Do we have to go to Texas tomorrow? I want to play the Angels again.”

I guess you forgot the first two games.

detroit ties it up, solo shot from granderson

  1371. mel

Damn, Farnsworth really hates us, huh?

  1372. GreenBeret7

Angel, one other difference between Rodriguez and Ortiz is that Rodriguez is a dietary/health nut and Ortiz eats in one meal food to feed the Dominican Republic for a year.

  1373. MrMulligan (Xavier in Pinstripes)

Detroit ties it in the Bottom of the 9th…

  1374. Timmy Lupus

Percival just gave up a HR to Granderson 4-4 in Tampa.

  1375. Steve

Farnsworth set a huge fire down in Tropicana Field.
Lucky for Yankees to get rid of him.

  1376. Confucius

“The Yankees are very fortunate that Farnsworth is no longer on the team. He has good stuff and bad luck”

It’s not just luck. Any tight spot he leans on his straight heat, and home runs ensue.

  1377. Dan

Does Edwar automatically get the win or does the official scorer have discretion?

  1378. R23

    Enjoy Farnsworth, Det.

    Hey, Detroit ties it up!

  1384. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Geeze, I get to watch a great Postgame (none for the last two days), and I get to watch Baseball Tonight and enjoy it!

All in all a great weekend. And I wonder if the Angels tell each other they were lucky to get away with 2 here? One run is all that made the difference.

    Just saying…

    :)

  1385. T D

“Angel, one other difference between Rodriguez and Ortiz is that Rodriguez is a dietary/health nut and Ortiz eats in one meal food to feed the Dominican Republic for a year.”

Ortiz has 2 titles. A-Rod none.

  1386. Mister Delaware

It would be .667. Rounding y’all!

  1387. SJ44

    Jason,

As I said earlier, if the Yankees could get two very good players for Cano, I’d make that trade tomorrow.

Why is that so hard to comprehend? 2 is greater than 1, isn’t it?

You think he is an untouchable. I don’t.

I think he is a very talented, yet erratic, player. I prefer guys who play the game with more consistency.

Since the team has a lot of holes to fill in the off-season, why not test the market for him?

Now, I know you won’t understand this answer and will post the same nonsense toward me the next time Cano does something.

Ironically, when he gave up 8 runs on this homestand with his horrid defense earlier in the week, you didn’t pose the same question to me.

  1388. Diane

Interesting how trisha is still posting and stuart and sj44 aren’t. Go, trisha!

  1389. JR Yankees

And Nady could have had 8 RBI’s instead of 6…obviously the Abreu screw up but then he got robbed of another RBI when his double bounced over the wall. Arod definately would have scored from 1st.

    TB just tied it up.

  1390. Vrsce

This win (and it will be a win) is the biggest of the year for the Yankees.
after losing 2 to the Angels, they were in a bad spot. Now they have proven that they can back. Their confidence should be very high.

1391. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

It would be .667. Rounding y’all!

Why you got to say that :)

  1392. Confucius

Farnsy might get one of those wins that relievers prefer to avoid.

Meanwhile, we’re about to amass more wins against the Angels than the Red Sox managed to all season. Too bad the rest of our games against them are in the House of Pain.

  1393. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“I guess you forgot the first two games.”

Hardly. Seldom do you get a winning run off the best closer in baseball, that would be Mariano Rivera.

Angels lucky to be leaving. We kicked their little not-quite-as-hot-as-you-would-like-to-think booty!

They need to be playing teams like the Sux.

  1394. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

“He pushed that for weeks. Maybe you weren’t around. I guess you also forget his saying the Yanks should sell and rebuild back in May too. Oh well.”

No. In fact, I’m around a lot more than you are as far as I can tell. I actually read what he says objectively, unlike those like you that read him looking to pounce on him for being negative. I think some of you people forget that he’s a fan too. We all post reactionary things at times.

1395. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

I hope this Mo shoulder thing isn’t too serious

  1396. JR Yankees

I meant DET tied it up.

Anybody who is not wondering about Mo must be crazy. I don’t care how small of an injury it is. At the time we were ahead by only 2 runs and Mo was not warming up. That is not good.

Hopefully it is nothing but man, if we lose Mo for even a small amount of time…

  1397. GreenBeret7

TK, that was indeed our conversation early this morning. If a move was made, it probably should have been made at the start of the inning. As it turned out, Rivera wasn’t available today, with a bit of stiffness in his shoulder. No idea how serious, but, it was iced down before the game. Pe4rhaps that was the thinking.

  1399. Jason NJ

    SJ44,

You can rationalize it anyway you want. You pushed for Cano to be traded for weeks. Why can’t you admit you were wrong? You’re the George Bush of this posting section.

  1400. YankeeJosh

    SJ44,

I think you hit the nail on the head with Cano. You certainly don’t give him away, but depending on the return, he isn’t untouchable. Do you trade Cano for Washburn? Of course not. But if you could get a few very good youngish players you have to consider it. Cano has a lot of talent, a great swing, but he also has a lot of downside which you’ve mentioned (poor OBP and not working the count among them). If you can upgrade the team by trading him, you do it. If not, you don’t.

  1401. SamVA

anybody see maybe Christian starting in CF?
is his arm any good? I know he has batter speed then Melky…

  1402. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

This is easily one of the biggest wins of the season if they hold on to win it.

Remember this game was once 5-0.

great win… If I told you going into the series that Ponson and Rasner were pitching, and Andy Pettitte was going to get LIT UP in the first game but we would split, everyone on this board would take it.

  1412. Gordo

Why trade Cano? It’s not like we got any player under the age of 30 starting. And nothing in the high minors of note besides Austin Jackson.

1413. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

“I think you hit the nail on the head with Cano. You certainly don’t give him away, but depending on the return, he isn’t untouchable.”

Thats what I thought he’d said. That Cano wasn’t untouchable – IF they could get equal value for him then it wasn’t a no brainer not to do it. I dont see how saying that equates to saying they SHOULD trade him.

1422. JoeT 28 in 09!! Start Geise! Burn out Pavano, get what we can

    # 3 Abreu
    # 4 Arod
    # 5 Nady

    We may have something here.

  1425. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“If Figgins could field a ground ball, A-Rod a goat right now. That’s a DP.”

    However, it didn’t happen.

If the home plate ump gets all the calls right, sometimes the competition doesn’t end up scoring.

    Oh well.

  1426. Timmy Lupus

If you’re the Yankees you have to happy with this series. They scored 6 runs the first game Andy was just uncharacteristically awful. Ponson threw the ball very well in game 2. Moose was outstanding in game 3. And the team wouldn’t say die in game 4. The Angels looked very beatable this weekend.

1427. S.A.-I still believe in this team but can the offense stop being offensive?

    What a wacky game

  1428. BBFan

In spite of the tough loss in the second game, it is a very successful series against the Halos. Nobody gave us a chance. But for the second game, we scored lot of runs. And, they swept Boston before coming here.

In Joe Torre era, they really owned us.
Now at the start of Joe Girardi era, we certainly sent a message. Hopefully, we will continue to do well against them. the thing that is striking to me is that almost all their starting lineup average is below .300. So, if play reasonable defense, we will good against them.

  1429. Confucius

“Kim Jones is like a ‘99 Bordeaux…better as the seasons go by…”

Better the longer you keep her in your basement, you mean.

  1432. SJ44

    Diane,

I’m still posting. Do you have reading problems?

1433. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Why does Edwar get awarded the win?! That is total bs, Giese deserved it!

  1434. E-Man

That was an UGLY win but I’ll take it.

  1435. Wanderer

Games like this really shut up the “Yanks are Dead” people.

1436. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef]

    It was an exciting game.

  1437. Phil

Most fun game of the year?

btw, Figgins plays third with an OF glove, and though that allows him some extra reach on plays, it also causes him some problems, as seen today.

  1438. TKinDC

    Just heard Nady –

Didn’t realize he was born in Cali -

Great day (and a great TRADE!)

  1439. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

“In Joe Torre era, they really owned us.”

Very good point BBFan. I’m willing to look at some of the differences in the managing and think it has made a difference in the way the team plays against different teams.

  1440. Scorpio

    The good: X Nady.

The bad: Melky “aiming for the fences” Cabrera.

The verdict: a win, is a win, is a win…

Great, eXciting game!! Looking forward to the TX series =)

  1441. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I would love to see Abreu, A-Rod, Nady.

That would be amazing the way they’re hitting.

  1442. Ot

Edwar proved he cannot handle the 8th inning.

  1443. Mister Delaware

I’m not here a ton, but if this guy is getting jumped on for saying Cano isn’t untouchable and it was around the time of the Billingsley talk, its hard to blame him.

  1444. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

Aww. Don changed his name to Diane.

1445. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

Edwar had 37 hitless PA vs him prior to today, I’d chill w/ the criticism on him, Although he did make me cringe today.

  1446. Mickey Mouse

Nady was a huge get for this team. He proved it today.

  1447. SJ44

    BBFan,

After losing a home series to the Orioles, regardless of how it was done, getting 2 was a must in this series.

Especially with only 20 home games remaining this season.

They have to have a winning roadtrip though. Especially with the way Tampa and Boston play at home.

At least Tampa has more road games than home games remaining on their schedule. The Red Sox have more home than road games remaining.

  1448. JMO

Come on Confucious, she’s very attractive and I bet she’s a lot of fun over a few glasses of said bordeaux.

  1449. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

    man, what an AWESOME game!!!
    I’ll say it again…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_TbHl3a8qk

    X IS THE MAN!!!

All things considered, I look at the split as a win. They played awful in the first game but battled in the last 3 and won 2 of them. Considering the way Anaheim has pushed Boston’s poop in, in Boston, this year, I think other than on Thursday the Yankees had a nice showing this weekend.

  1450. george

It’s a “Bipolar Yankees Classic.” in the course of this game, Jeter made me nuts with the bunt, Ramirez-to-Teixeira is unfathomable, Abreu pulled a rock, etc. yet there was so much else: Christian, Nady, etc. even Rasner had his moments to keep it respectable.

1451. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship )

BTW Rasner can not be allowed to start another game this season. END THIS.

  1452. lil' m

Yeah baby!!! The Yankee offense: gotta give ‘em their props today. Nice to see resilience, clutch at-bats and giving back some of their own to the Orange County Angels (talkin’ to you, Chone Figgins lol). Also kudos to Joe G with the strategizing, and some bigtime ups to the X-Man!!! Considering just how scary-good the LAAOCCA are, splitting with them after blowing the game on Friday is better than we could have hoped for. Live to fight another day!!!!

  1453. Jeff NJ

ok good time to repost this, I think Joe should alter the lineup to this:

Jeter (outstanding numbers at DH, can still run)
Damon (hot hitter, no DP Jeter behind him)
A Rod (give him some protection with Abreu)
    Abreu (white hot right now)
    Nady (this guy is mashing)
Giambi (have to bat him somewhere)
I Rod (lefty righty still in effect)
    Cano
    Melky

I think it would work, Joe should consider it seriously.

  1454. Al from BK

Hughes back in stripes in 2 weeks could be the boost this team needs especially after learning about Wanger’s out for season diagnosis.
