Dentist: Ruth died of rare cancer
-
- August
- 4
Everybody has seen the old footage of Babe Ruth in his final time at Yankee Stadium. It was widely believed he died of throat cancer.
But a dentist in Westchester has uncovered evidence that shows Ruth died of a different, rare form of cancer and had experimental treatments.
Back later with the lineups from steamy Texas.

OK……?
I actually have lots of footage in my Yankees collection of the Babe at various times in his Yankees career, some of his latter years too, some as a sux.He was a great yankee. He never once spoke ill of Beantown for trading him, never. He was very thin the last few years of his life.
“OK……?”
From the article:
“And what I found out was that this larger-than-life celebrity was a pioneer in early cancer research”
Not interesting to you, don’t read it…..
todays obscure post of the day brought to you by: trojan condoms, #1 condom in the world
Interesting.
It’s was a weird post but it was Yankee related.
But it was better then Patriots Training Camp news from Pete.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-simers4-2008aug04,0,6216565.column
take a look @ this http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-simers4-2008aug04,0,6216565.column
Is he still dead?
Because when you’re dealing with cancer, and it’s pretty much in the whole throat-sinus area, it’s not unreasonable to think there was metasthasis and then, who knows….
That’s some pretty remarkable information.
Who are these yahoos questioning this post? This is a Yankee blog. This is new and interesting information on Babe Ruth!
If not for Ruth, the Yankees could well be the Rangers, or have moved to L.A. instead of the Dodgers. Ok - speculation, but the point is, if you don’t think this is relevant / useful, then: 1) just don’t read it and comment on it; and 2) learn some history.
robert kelly, you cant be serious?
Great post Pete, and nice article by Robert Marchant.
Heartwarming to read the comments of Ruth’s granddaughter Linda Ruth, and also the researcher’s conclusion:
“I used to see him as a giant on the field; now I see him as a giant off the field,” he said.
“OK……?”
I know that it can be hard to believe sometimes that there can be other Yankee-related conversations than “Melky sucks,” “Rasner sucks” and “how come we haven’t won the World Series this year yet?”
Great story, Pete. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting, I thought.
But, how did the good doctor reach this conclusion? Did he have access to 60 year-old medical records? To the experimental treatment records?
And, why would his granddaughter be happy that it wasn’t a lifestyle thing? Would she rather that it be genetic?
I can see where most would think this is an off-the-wall topic, but I’ve always been interested in the Babe’s life.
LOL Robert O’Kelly!
1. So now we are only allowed to comment on things we think are relevant or useful? That would eliminate most of the posts on this blog.
2. “Learn some history”? Are you serious? On a blog about baseball? Get over yourself.
I agree that this is Yankees related, but this is nothing more than a trivial detail in the death of man that has been dead for over 50 years. Forgive us for not really seeing the big deal.
And Chris NY, I did read the article, but let’s not make the Babe out to be some sort of great cancer researcher or hero. They guy, against doctor’s advice, underwent experimental treatment to try to save his own life! He wasn’t out there doing this for the good of humanity. They may have learned something from his treatment that helped others down the line, but let’s try not to make this something it is not.
Thanks for the info Pete. Now im waiting for them to say that there wasnt a piano thrown in the lake in boston. Or that there wasnt a curse.
“todays obscure post of the day brought to you by: trojan condoms, #1 condom in the world”
Magnum would dissagree.
Re. Brackman - From a post on Pinstripes Plus it sounds like he has gotten himself into tremendous phsyical shape and is an extremely hard worker. Hopefully, that puts him closer to the Melancon rehab category vs the Garcia. Sanchez if memory serves had his surgery later than the other guys so he is a few months behind.
What about Hughes.
Joba, Brackman, Wang, Hughes (not to mention Cole, Macallister, Betances, Heredia etc)
I know that it can be hard to believe sometimes that there can be other Yankee-related conversations than “Melky sucks,” “Rasner sucks” and “how come we haven’t won the World Series this year yet?”
But there will always be people whining about the whiners.
“1. So now we are only allowed to comment on things we think are relevant or useful? That would eliminate most of the posts on this blog.”
Count me in as one who would be eliminated. Some call it A.D.D. Pete would have banned me by now.
Oh yeah - and CC.
Joba, CC, Wang, Brackman, Hughes.
Then - Cole, Maccalister, Betances, Heredia, Pope, Kennedy, Horne, Bleich as protection.
Jason,
I like that list. But im affraid that C.C. arm might fall off before he gets to free agency.
Can’t we all just get along.
yeh i wouldnt be shocked if we take a pass on CC after the brewcrew is done with him
“And Chris NY, I did read the article, but let’s not make the Babe out to be some sort of great cancer researcher or hero.”
I never made him out to be anything, I just quoted 1 line from the article. My point was simply that it was an interesting article. And as far as trying to save his own life, I completely agree. That doesn’t make him any less of a pioneer, if he was the first or one of the first to have the sac to try it, no matter what the motivation.
No-one said a pioneer couldn’t be self-serving, they just have to be the first to do something. The point is, it was an intersting article about the greatest Yankee slugger that ever lived. Random post? Sure, it’s weird to hear about the cause of a guy’s death so many years later. Doesn’t mean it’s not interesting or worthy of a post.
The whiners make me laugh.
You think the Babe died pissed off that Gehrig got his disease named after him but this rare cancer never became “Babe Ruth’s Disease”?
I like that list. But im affraid that C.C. arm might fall off before he gets to free agency.
His weight is what would scare me off, his arm and shoulders are in great shape the guy is built like an OLB I doubt he’ll have arm issues.
An article like that is a lot more interesting to me than some trash about who A-Rod is shagging. Not surprised that the pack of retards here don’t have any appreciation for this article.
Slu - I’m genuinely curious. Did you actually “lol”?
You read the article, yet you still make a comment suggesting you don’t understand why this post is here?
Now look what we have. I question your post questioning Pete’s post, so you write back questioning my post. Blog-tastic!
I interpreted your post as saying “why should we care about Babe Ruth.” Sorry if I misinterpreted. I’m glad Pete posted it. Your post was more helpful than those people who pop up in game threads and say “what happened?” or “what’s the score in the Rays game?” Aren’t you online?
what are the chances that lou gehrig would die of lou gehrig’s disease? they’ve gotta be astronomical!
Hughes hit 101 on Radar Gun in start @ Charleston?? Watch

“The whiners make me laugh”
The whiners make me regress and act out all over the place. I was actually a pretty nice guy when I started posting here.
What Brackman could become is potentially scary. Can’t wait to see what does happen.

Does any body know what the curse is going on with the ” dark knight” movie. Heath Ledger dies , bale gets arrested,
and now freeman has a major accident?
I read somewhere that jack nichalson (the old joker) warned ledger that its Dangerous to act on this movie!!???!!!
Sorry not a baseball issue but i am really interested…
John in Ohio
“But, how did the good doctor reach this conclusion? Did he have access to 60 year-old medical records? To the experimental treatment records”?
In the original scientific article, that appeared in the J.of the American Dental Association, they reviewed the autopsy that revealed the primary cancer was nasopharyngeal.
“what are the chances that lou gehrig would die of lou gehrig’s disease? they’ve gotta be astronomical!”
Denis Leary always had the best delivery on that one.
“Does any body know what the curse is going on with the ” dark knight” movie. Heath Ledger dies , bale gets arrested,
and now freeman has a major accident?’
….and Maggie Gyllenhall gets to live around the block from me. that has to be bad as well.
I was going through some old boxes yesterday and found a Journal News (it had another name) from 1969. The sports reporting was very funny.
“Re. Brackman - From a post on Pinstripes Plus it sounds like he has gotten himself into tremendous phsyical shape and is an extremely hard worker. Link?
You wan’t to talk about a Batman curse, just look at the TV series.
The Joker, The Penguin, Louie the Lilac, The Riddler, Alfred, King Tut,Commissioner Gordon, and Bruce Wayne’s Aunt are all dead!
When my kids were little, and I said the sky was blue, they’d argue with you…I hate that.
I wouldn’t put too much stock in anything from Pinstripes Plus, they are your typical prospect huggers that aren’t scouts or baseball men at all. They’re just fans and fans who are not educated scouts can’t really tell you much about how a prospect projects. Not to say I don’t hope they’re right on everything, because if they are we have about 400 future hall of famers in our system.
LV Yankee welcome to already posted territory
Hahaha Clay. I can only hope I have the type of ‘curse’ that the TV series characters had as opposed to the Dark Knight ‘curse.’
Figured it might have been posted but could not go through the slew of postings. No worries. Glad someone had it up. Hopefully Hughes continues to perform and we see him at the end of the month.
Speaking of curses. Can there be the making of Manny curse on the Sox? I still think they are going to fall short of making the playoffs. With Loriano coming back. I think we will take Tampa and the wildcard will come from the central. Someone just has to tell the Rays that it isnt preseason anymore.
does anyone know where i can buy yankee tickets, i cant get any from the yankees website (i guess its all sold out) and ive tried stubhub but its pretty expensive, does anyone know anywhere else i can get them? im looking for a weekend game, it doesnt matter who its against.
“Can there be the making of Manny curse on the Sox?”
Has Boston lost since he’s been gone??? Some freakin’ curse.
happy birthday to our old buddy that has a wife a steroid user! Roger Clemens!!!! He turned 46 today!! love y’all! as he would say!
“Someone just has to tell the Rays that it isnt preseason anymore.”
It’s too bad they’re the team in front of us, as I’d actually love to have a way to root for them. Oh well.
Don’t know if this was posted already, but Tyler Kepner has Hughes in pinstripes post-haste…
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/04/hughes-on-his-way-back-and-odd-uniform-sights/
I would love for the Rays to bump the Sox from the postseason. However, it is just as likely if not more likely that the Rays could block the Yankees postseason entry.
That’s why we need to keep winning series and close the gap now. It doesn’t help that we face the Sox at Fenway while the Rays play Detroit during each of our final series. WC could be decided by those 3 games in Fenway.
God I hope it doesn’t come down to that.
For 09
How do you guys feel about Xavier in left,Abreu in right,Damon dh, Matsui traded, Stache gone,Posada at first,Pudge comes back? Instead of letting Abreu walk,Damon in left, Posada catch before hes ready and Matsui dh? I cant trust that Matsui will staying healthy for a whole year. IMO one of Damon or Matsui have to go.
“does anyone know where i can buy yankee tickets, i cant get any from the yankees website (i guess its all sold out) and ive tried stubhub but its pretty expensive, does anyone know anywhere else i can get them? im looking for a weekend game, it doesnt matter who its against.”
usually, stubhub tix get cheaper the closer you get to the game date. i can imagine this being an unusual season and that not happening this year, though.
yesterday was my last Yankee tix for the season, and I’d love to, at least, get to one more game this year.
First, it’s Liriano, not Loriano. And second, we’re in August now. Mocking/underestimating the Rays at this point in the season sounds dumb and uninformed.
SOS:
Problem with Abreu being on the team in ‘09 is that he’ll be with the team in ‘10 and ‘11 too. He’s an FA with one last shot at a payday. He’s not going to sign anywhere for one year. He’s probably looking for three years…minimum.
“Has Boston lost since he’s been gone??? Some freakin’ curse.”
Fredo dont worry, relax. I cant even name 3 players on that AAA squad they played against. Their time will come.
There was a “Babe Ruth” disease. The RS caught it collectively and only figured out a way to beat it in 2004.
Rumor has it that they are working hard in Tampa and NY to introduce a more persistent, virulent strain.
Looks like the yankees really liked what they saw from Hughes in his last rehab start.
Tyler Kepner is reporting that Hughes drove to AAA scranton last night with Shelley Duncan.
I thought they would give phil a game or two at AA. But they’re sending him right to AAA.
That’s a very good sign. Also a sign that they think he can help in the rotation sooner rather than later.
Hughes is going to help them this year. I think he’s going to come back and throw very well.
Magnum, Trojan, is there really much difference?
“How do you guys feel about Xavier in left,Abreu in right,Damon dh, Matsui traded, Stache gone,Posada at first,Pudge comes back? *bangs head against office wall*
why in the world do people continue to think that 1B is like some Blue Plate special for aging players? hasn’t watching the defensive prowess of Jason Giambi and Wilson Betemit taught us anything?
either Posada catches next year, or he can don a jacket next to Michael Kay in the booth. i’m sorry, namesake of mine.
Melky has to get it back together, because this team becomes a bit harder to figure out in the short-term without him. if he continues to regress, you canput Nady in CF, but that means either Matsui or Damon have to be up for playing RF for a season.
I think Abreu goes and both Matsui and Damon play their contracts out in pinstripes. then, you pray for A-Jax and whatever else comes down the pipe.
Clay,
Might the fact that the Batman tv series was on OVER 40 YEARS AGO, have something to do with them all being dead?
just a guess….
“Tyler Kepner is reporting that Hughes drove to AAA scranton last night with Shelley Duncan.”
from Charleston? WITH Shelley the entire time? that must have been one hell of a drive.
“hey Phil…watch me moon that cop!”
“hey Phil…let’s do donuts”
Stephan,
You might have a point. But in my eyes they are still the Clippars of baseball. I cant help but hope that they finally see that name accross their chest and start playing like the rays of the past. The scary part is they have more pitching coming up. That lefty stud in the minors is supposed to help them out soon. I dont think it will be their pitching that hurts them rather their offense. Not getting a big bat in the deadline could hurt them.
“Fredo dont worry, relax. I cant even name 3 players on that AAA squad they played against. Their time will come.”
I was disaapointed to see Ramirez go. There was no question in my mind he would personally sabotage Boston’s season. They may have a less imposing lineup now, but they have a better team. Remember the Yankees were winning World Series as a matter of routine without a bat anywhere close to Ramirez. Plus the have a pretty soft schedule the rest of the way too.
Back Bench: Quote of the night.
For whoever was trying to get tickets -
You might want to try Craig’s List or ask around for friends (or friends of friends) with season tickets…We got 8 games from a friend this year. We were there yesterday and our last game (as of now
) is September 14th (TB)…
Jorge Steinbrenner- at least you got some games in, i havent been to the stadium all year, and probably wont get to go. ive been following the yankees since 2000 and im only 15 but i really wanted to get to the stadium this year. ive only been to one game even though i only live like an hour away. the game was sept. 10 2005 against the red sox, and we lost in an absolute blowout. i didnt get to go to monument park or anything. thats really why i want to go, to see the plaques and retired numbers, i feel like its a rite of passage for any yankee fan.
S.O.S.
Don’t underestimate the impact revenue sharing has had on teams like the Rays. They have been sellers every year of their existence at the trade deadline. This year they were buyers.
Their team might need to add a couple of pieces and be set for the next few years. I don’t relish having the Yanks fight with two teams for the division but I think it will be that way for a few years.
Jorge Steinbrenner,
Im am against signing a first baseman for another 7 years. Fool me once. So what your saying is if Posada cant catch hes useless? Ill take his healthy bat on my team anyday. Dh wouldnt be a bad idea as well. As far as right field is concerned. You think it was bad having Damon roam center. How about having weak arms in right? They would make singles into doubles all day long. First to third on every play. If you know someone who can be our first baseman thats name isnt Tex. Im all ears. Besides i strongly believe he’s going back home to Baltimore anyways.
Abreu wouldn’t sign a 1 year deal with us, not with the season that he is having. He can get a 3 year deal somewhere else, especially with this year’s FA class.
“Jorge Steinbrenner- at least you got some games in, i havent been to the stadium all year, and probably wont get to go. ive been following the yankees since 2000 and im only 15 but i really wanted to get to the stadium this year. ive only been to one game even though i only live like an hour away. the game was sept. 10 2005 against the red sox, and we lost in an absolute blowout. i didnt get to go to monument park or anything. thats really why i want to go, to see the plaques and retired numbers, i feel like its a rite of passage for any yankee fan.”
Max - do you know if the staidum tous for the rest of the season are sold out? you could at least try for that. i managed to get in this year, and it was absolutely fantastic.
got to do five games this year. somehow, Rasner started three of them. my record was 4-1 this year, though.
it’s both really sad and exciting to be at the old stadium right now.
remember Max, no matter what your friends tell you, going to Shea is no substitute.
i meant “stadium tours.” still nursing a pinched nerve. sorry.
Move Nady up and drop Jeter in the lineup
Who is with me???
“Don’t underestimate the impact revenue sharing has had on teams like the Rays. They have been sellers every year of their existence at the trade deadline. This year they were buyers.”
More like window shoppers. Being a “buyer” implies, well, you know, actually buying something. I was a little surprised by their trade deadline silence.
My hope for the lineup tonight:
Jeter
Damon
A Rod
Abreu
Nady
Giambi
I Rod
Cano
Melky
Any questions?
Someone Else - Pinstripes Plus is a pay site - www.pinstripesplus.com. The quote was from Patrick who saw Brackman recently.
Anthony - I didn’t say that Pinstripesplus had Brackman as CY Young, just that he has to someone who has seen him gotten in better physical shape. They also pointed to his work ethic. Since they were on Melancon from the beginning (as being mentally tough) I will go with their opinion. This does not make Brackman the next coming, but I would certainly guess that it helps the cause.
Fredo: I think Tampa tried for Bay? Granted, they could have done more.
Yanksrule,
I agree. They are going to be there every year unless they have pitchers getting hurt. Im was just hoping that they werent ready yet. Longoria is every bit his hype. Heres hoping the young guys run out of gas.
If Abreu wants more than 1 year. Which is almost a given, unless he takes a nose dive(which we wouldnt want him anyways). Then pack his bags. I keep hearing how much he loves playing for this team and think he might give us a discount. BTW. X man reminds me a lot of Oneil. I think he’s going to help us for a couple years.
2009 team lineup:
Damon LF/DH
Jeter SS
Texeira 1b
A Rod 3B
M. Ramirez LF/DH
Nady RF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
GONE: Giambi, Matsui, Abreu, Ivsn Rodriguez
Questions: Would love to see Melky either on bench for defensive replacement or part of a decent trade. Is Austin Jackson ready at some point soon to take over in CF?
Pitching:
Sabathia (although I think he is in love with the Mid West)
Wang
Chamberlain
Pettitte
Hughes
QUESTIONS: Pettitte is of course a swing decision on whether to bring him back or whether he even wants to play anymore. Is Kennedy improved or ready? If folks like him, Brackman, Sanchez or Horne seem ready, then it’s unlikely we need Pettitte to come back.
BEFORE YOU SLAM ME ON PAYROLL: It is one of the positions of strength NY will always be able to operate from. They can bring the players here because they can outspend. The trick is refraining from giving 7-10 year contracts and staying more within the range of 3-5 year agreements on players over the age of 25.
The Yanks can afford these players, and I believe Ramirez in the middle of that lineup alternating LF and DH with Damon is about as good as you can get.
“My hope for the lineup tonight:
Jeter
Damon
A Rod
Abreu
Nady
Giambi
I Rod
Cano
Melky
Any questions?”
Why is Abreu and Arod flip flopped?
“Im am against signing a first baseman for another 7 years. Fool me once. So what your saying is if Posada cant catch hes useless? Ill take his healthy bat on my team anyday. Dh wouldnt be a bad idea as well. As far as right field is concerned. You think it was bad having Damon roam center. How about having weak arms in right? I actually agree with most of your points. I don’t think we’re going to field a perfect team next year either. I’ve always been of the belief that we have to do all the right things in 2008 and 2009 to right the damage we did to ourselves this decade. The outfield is not going to be perfect. Having Nady around makes it a hell of a lot better, but it’s still an issue which i don’t think gets fixed in a year. good thing we were listing all our pitching prospects, because i think we need to swap from that strength to balance out our prospect base a bit.
I’m more open to Jorge DHing than to him playing 1B. I don’t know who else besides Tex could play 1st either, but we can’t settle for subpar defense at 1st. We need to do something there.
But, yeah, I dont think we necessarily are on opposite sides here.
At this moment if you only had one of these pitchers to sign for next year. Which would it be? Pettitte or Mussina?
Dont know if this has yet been reported here but Phil HUghes was promoted to Scranton and will start there this week (According to Tyler Kepner) NY Times blog link on the right
Fire Girardi:
Other than your screenname, that’s what I’d like to see in an ideal world, but i don’t think it’s going to happen. i think Manny will definitely price himself of what makes common sense to us, and I worry about Tex doing the same. i think the order to the Big & Tall Shop for C.C is already out, though.
S.o.S.27
mussina- he is a new kind of pitcher!
“At this moment if you only had one of these pitchers to sign for next year. Which would it be? Pettitte or Mussina?”
I slightly lean Moose, but it’s almost a toss-up for me. I don’t think you bring back both. It’s gotta be Hughes at 5 next year.
“Being a “buyer” implies, well, you know, actually buying something. I was a little surprised by their trade deadline silence.”
I was very surprised to see them do so little. No idea what happened with the Bay deal but I find it very difficult to believe that they couldn’t beat an offer of Laroche, Morris, Moss and Hansen.
If the rumors that they made Brignac “untouchable” were true then its inexcusable that they didn’t get Bay.
More likely the issue was Hellickson. I could see him being a sticking point. That said Tampa could have put together a 4-5 player deal even without Hellickson better than what Pittsburgh got for Bay.
Friedman either showed his inexperience in being on the buying side or he’s looking at this season as house money.
Historically, teams have found it difficult to deal with the Rays. Friedman’s a terrific GM but isn’t that flexible on deals.
Before he didn’t need to be. But their franchise is in a very different place.
Jorge Steinbrenner
yea that sounds fun, ive thought about a tour, but i dont think anyone would want to go with me (i know, crazy-who wouldnt want to tour the stadium?) its pretty crazy, i have 9 siblings and i could almost guarantee i couldnt drag one of them with me.
4-1 isnt bad, id take it, lol. shawn chacon started the game i went to, and randy johnson was the day after (he threw a gem and we won 1-0) and i think moose the day before-not so sure about that
JT- im with you on moving Nady up, but im not with you on moving Jeter down. I would switch Giambi with Nady (I know, I know, that messes up the R-L balance, but i think it would seriously increase Arods run production)
C.C. and Tex wont take 3 to 5 year contracts. If that was the case then i would be all in.
Jorge,
Lets hope that Montero is ready in 2010. They say he is too big to catch. Dont know how good he is with his glove but he might be the answer. As far as a good glove at first. I totally agree. Thats why i think we should keep Sexy for a defensive replacement ala Clark and Olerud.
“So what your saying is if Posada cant catch hes useless?”
Useless? No way. But his value is greatly diminished. As a catcher, he is among the exceptional in terms of being able to provide offense. As a 1B or DH, he is not.
SOS, I flipped flop Abreu and A Rod to keep the lefty-righty the whole way through the lineup. With Nady and I Rod, we actually have a stronger righty lineup than lefty at this point. So to move Nady up to 5th, I flipped Abreu and A Rod. FYI, A Rod would do well with Abreu protecting him. The added benefit is Giambi moves down a spot, he’s been terrible.
max
thats fair but im for sitting giambi for a few cause i think hes lost right now
ponson is a big game pitcher
“Thats why i think we should keep Sexy for a defensive replacement ala Clark and Olerud.”
I swear I’d give Doug Meintkeiwicz (didn’t even come close…i know) a lifetime contract to be our backup 1B until he literally has no knees.
“If the rumors that they made Brignac “untouchable” were true then its inexcusable that they didn’t get Bay.”
Agreed. I like LaRoche more than Brignac. Probably right that Hellickson, or perhaps Davis were a sticking point.
“ponson is a big game pitcher”
depending of which word you accentuate in that sentence, i may agree with that.
The Yankees aren’t signing Manny Ramirez GET OVER IT.
Dr Maloney could have saved a lot of work by checking wikipedia. The fact that he had this cancer and took experimental meds is all on wikipedia.
I could see going 3 years with Abreu. If there are no better OF options available at the end of the year, then why not? I’d concede a limited NTC to him if he pushed for one.
Sort of depends on what they do with Melky, Matsui, Cano & maybe even 1B too. Lots of options to consider.
And absafreakinlootly no Manny in the Yanks OF next year. The guy wants $100M for 4 years. $100M for five would be pushing it especially after his last drama. He was making that much ($20M per) before, and he’s not as good as he was when he signed THAT contract. He’s good now, but he was better before. Give him what he’s getting now? If a team wants him that badly, they can go ahead. Give him a raise? No way, no matter what team eventually signs hum. No option years for him either. Teams have seen the lesson learned this time around. With the future the Yanks are focusing on, they shouldn’t go near him.
Hughes to Scranton
JT
yea, but he did shave the ’stache, so i dont know.
but seriously, if giambi sits, who do you want at first, Sexson? im not sure hes an offensive upgrade, defensively though hes better. Betemit? right now, hes probably offensively better than jason and id say about equal defensively.
id like to see christian in the lineup a few times this series, perhaps against the lefties (thats two of the four games right) and sit melky for those two games.
If giambi sits, who do you want at first, Sexson? im not sure hes an offensive upgrade, defensively though hes better. Betemit? right now, hes probably offensively better than jason and id say about equal defensively.
Hughes has got to have at least a few starts at scranton, no?
woah sorry for the repeat post-within the post.
A dentist?
Jorge Steinbrenner- Given what Tex will cost and what he will be at the end of a 8-10 year contract I am sure the Yanks already have CC’s size 60 Tall jersey being ordered.
Shouldnt have got rid of Alphabet. I mean not only was he a great replacement. But was also a clost friend/good luck charm of Arods. He should have had that clause on his 10 year contract. If only he had Boras at the time of signing.
Jorge Steinbrenner -
“Meintkeiwicz” is actually pretty close. Reverse the I’s and E’s in both instances, and you got it right. It’s “Mientkiewicz”. Pretty commendable though … he probably still has trouble spelling it too.
I think you spelled ‘Doug’ correctly though.

Hughes has got to have at least a few starts at scranton, no?”
Rebecca theoretically his next start he will go 70-80 pitches and his next start following that he will go 90-95. I would think his last start in the minors could be that second start and it very well may be at SWB. I say expect Hughes around the 20th of this month, but then again I am just speculating.
“Hughes has got to have at least a few starts at scranton, no?”
He was only in the 60-65 pitch range in SC, right??? 2, maybe three starts in AAA would seem about right.
Ansky,
The problem with giving Abreu a 3 year deal is he would be your dh. From what iv heard his defense is one of the worst in the league this year. I see the dh spot being reserved for our veterans. They arent getting younger.
According to Kay on YES he said Girardi charted pitch counts for Hughes and some guy named Carl ..from 55 - 75 - 85 and then 105 pitches.
Abreu’s OBP has been declined the last 2 years, his numbers will only continue to slide. At the end of the year bid him farewell and thanks. Why should the team dole out money that’s basically paying him for what he’s done in the past and not really paying him based on what he’s now capable of. Corner outfielders are a dime a dozen. The Yankees have already tipped their hand with the Nady trade as he will be most likely slotted in to RF next year so all this discussion about Abreu is a moot point.
“According to Kay on YES he said Girardi charted pitch counts for Hughes and some guy named Carl ..from 55 - 75 - 85 and then 105 pitches.”
Heres to Pavano winning game 7 of the 08 World Series for us!! Would Cashman and Co. invite him to the stadium next year for the ring ceremonies?
So, what’s wrong with bringing Phil back to the majors sooner rather than later and having him start games with a shortened pitch count, they way they did with Joba? Is that crazy?

In Kepners blog he suggested that we would see Kennedy on this road trip and Hughes perhapson the next home stand as he would need he thinks 2-3 starts there
Phil Coke to AAA, as well..
maybe Coke to the show next month?
“So, what’s wrong with bringing Phil back to the majors sooner rather than later and having him start games with a shortened pitch count, they way they did with Joba? Is that crazy?”
That was my first thought. But i think AAA will do him good. Have him comeback with the confidence to throw all his pitches. Sharper/hungrier. Hopefully in Kennedy’s case it will have payed off as well.
I am amped to have Hughes back just think about how much better it will be seeing him in pinstripes as opposed to Razzy or that drunk fat guy. I also hope IPK can take over in the rotation and learn to pitch to his abilities.
Motown: Joba is a once in a Lifetime find, not just with his talent but with his maturity as well.
Phil is not Joba…He’s struggled at the ML level. The worst thing they can do is rush him.
“Why should the team dole out money that’s basically paying him for what he’s done in the past and not really paying him based on what he’s now capable of”
This isn’t without precedent. See: Posada, Jorge

I’d say that has a good shot of happening you can always use another lefty and he was a K machine down in Trenton.
SOS27 - you are right. The confidence thing will be important for him, given the performance earlier in the season. I wonder if it was all caused by the rib thing.
I noticed that Tyler didn’t mention that Pavano drove up with Phil and Shelley. That’s good news.
Rebecca- Just because Phil struggled at the big league level doesn’t mean that he is immature he is a very grown up guy.
I’d say that has a good shot of happening you can always use another lefty and he was a K machine down in Trenton.
if Coke does have a chance to be promoted to the show, and does really well, I could see him making the team out of spring training as our lefty relief pitcher out of the pen next season.
Ed Phil Coke has already been in AAA for a week, Hughes in AAA is big that has to mean he is near ready, I know Rafeal Chaves will tune this kid up. (hopefully like he did for King Felix) It’s going to be Rafy’s first time working w/ Phil that can only be a plus.
Coke has made two AAA appearances. Neither went well. Until he shows he can get people out at that level, I wouldn’t count on him. 26 years old already? Doesn’t exactly scream solid prospect.
Anyone have more info on this:

Apparently players were being asked to kick-back bonuses
“SOS27 - you are right. The confidence thing will be important for him, given the performance earlier in the season. I wonder if it was all caused by the rib thing.”
I was skeptical about his terrible start but given his track record I am almost positive that the rib was affecting his delivery for several starts before he actually went down.
“Jorge Steinbrenner- Given what Tex will cost and what he will be at the end of a 8-10 year contract I am sure the Yanks already have CC’s size 60 Tall jersey being ordered.”
Will anyone actually give him 8-10, though? He’s not A-Rod, and he only found one suitor,
Next time, I think I’ll go with the Yankees Chick variant on Doug’s name. Impressed by how close I got, though.

Motown Yankee Fan,
Iv been trying to get that question answered for months now. When did Phil get hurt?
Lets hope Carl drove in a seperate car/bus/porsche. Last thing we want is that dl-itus bug going around for the next 4 years.
brandon you have been waiting to Phil to work with CHaves since April lol. Glad you finally get the wish.

lol, there’s something i didnt know that happened a week ago. Chaves was the Mariner’s pitching coach before?
“I noticed that Tyler didn’t mention that Pavano drove up with Phil and Shelley. That’s good news.”
Again, I can imagine Shelley on the ride with Pavano and Phil…
“hey Carl…can I bang Alyssa? can I bang Alyssa?”
Pavano’s probably hitchhiking somewhere in Southern VA on I-95 right now.
“Will anyone actually give him 8-10, though? He’s not A-Rod, and he only found one suitor,”
Yeah. They are known to over pay all their players. METS.
Brandon or anyone else. Any news on Aceves? Do they see him helping this year?

That is very interesting info this Chaves guy must be good then (considering Felix’success)when did he join the Yanks?

Yup.

He has to improve a bit more in AAA.

This past offseason
SOS - I wonder if the rib thing was something that happened slowly over time, even starting in spring training. Remember when he came down there early, he was terrific and then, halfway through March, he just didn’t have it any more? I have zero medical knowledge, so that’s really all just hopeful theorizing, but it’d be great if he comes back as amazing as he was in early spring training. I think, at a minimum, Phil’s injury gives Phil an explanation for the horrible start this year, a way to put it behind him and go back to being his very talented self.
The following are the players Yanks will be after in the offseason.
CC Sabathia(7 Years 140 Mil similar to Santana deal)
Manny(4 Years 100 Mil)
Texeira(10 years 200 Mil - What Boras is expected to ask)
Brandon- There have been rumors of Hughes having increased his velocity I am sure Chaves can only help that cause. I think Phil’s stuff along with a 95-96 mph fastball as opposed to 91-93 would dramatically increase his effectiveness.
“I think Phil’s stuff along with a 95-96 mph fastball”
Hard to buy 95-96 when the same gun had him at 101 on a pitch. He was never 95-96 before he was injured or coming up. Seems kind of unlikely now.
NYY- Why would the Yanks ever give 100 mil to Manny Ramirez can anyone actually think how terrible it would be to watch a 41 year old Manny( at the end of that deal) playing for the Yanks. I think Tex is overrated the only big toy the Yanks are gonna pick up this offseason is CC.
Fredo- That is a bit unfair I know he was consistently 92-93 up here in the bigs but he had the occasional 95 mph burst so he can do it doing it with consistency is the key.
Signing Texeira should not be attempted if he wants more than 4 years. Unfortunately, the Yankees have too many DH types and longterm deals that make it almost impossible to sign an everyday first baseman without creating a log jam.
Posada is likely done as an everyday catcher - so that leaves 1Base/DH for him. Damon and Matsui are not everyday outfielders anymore - DHs. Giambi (if they are dumb enough to sign him for $6-8 Million) is a part time DH/1B. What about Miranda, who’s signed through 2010?
Then there is ARod who will certainly not be an effective third baseman for the next 9 years.
“Fredo- That is a bit unfair I know he was consistently 92-93 up here in the bigs but he had the occasional 95 mph burst so he can do it doing it with consistency is the key.”
Not being unfair, Al. When healthy he’s 92-93 occasionally topping out at 95, maybe 96. He does not and has never sat at 95-96.
Too many of you are hung up on Hughes’ “gun” readings. Hughes was never high 90s. What made/will make him effective is the late movement he possessed on both is fastballs, as well as the sharpness of his curveball.
Take a look at Robertson and how effective he is with gun readings of 88-91. MOVEMENT!
“Move Nady up and drop Jeter in the lineup. Who is with me???”
I’m half with you. Nady should be moved up to 5th. Jeter should stay in the two spot.
