Xavier Nady, the greatest Yankee ever, is the co Player of the Week in the AL. He was 10 of 19 with three homers and 10 RBI.

The X-Man shares the award with Kansas City’s Mike Aviles. He attended Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y., and is from Middletown.

Way to go Nady. I was just reading an article about Manny being flipped to the Yanks via the Marlins before he was dealt to L.A.

The Yanks & Boras were totally against it.

  7. steve August 4th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

X is awesome— a winning player. Not a superstar who swings for the fences and tries to do too much, he knows his role and he thrives in it.

  8. Motown Yankees Fan August 4th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

That’s great for the XMan. Was he ever player of the week before? If not, he’s got to be loving being on the Yankees. First his first curtain call ever, now this.

  9. RonH August 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Chad Jennings just posted on his SWB Yankees blog that Phil Hughes and Shelley Duncan are both on their way back to the SWB Yanks.

I want everyone to remember their comments today and yesterday when nady goes on an 0′fer and doesnt get a big hit because you know it will happen (it happens to everyone) and there will be people who cant believe that this guy is in the lineup again.

I love the guy but the love/hate relationship is amusing at times.

    Keep it going X.

(yes I know I was against him but he literally F***D up the Angels so do that and you can win me over).

  12. Indio CT August 4th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Nady is def the X factor.

  13. Jon August 4th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

What about Pavano? Is there room for Duncan? I hope they keep Justin on the team-need to have a good pinch-runner on the bench.

  14. Savalas August 4th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

    Brandon,

If you are starting to believe that A-Rod will never win a title why are you even here?

You do realize he has 10 more years here, right?

  15. TKinDC August 4th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

    Xcellent!

    Paul O’Neill? ;)

  17. Indio CT August 4th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Duncan had his chance. He’ll have to mash AAA pitching to have a shot and probably not til next year.

  18. letter10 August 4th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

with Nady’s history as being a solid no-nonsense player that knows his role and does it exceptionally well i think the Yanks made a great deal to get him and if he continues to preform i think it would serve them well to lock him up semi-long term if they can. they need more solid players without the superstar luggage.

  19. Al from BK August 4th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

“What about Pavano? Is there room for Duncan? I hope they keep Justin on the team-need to have a good pinch-runner on the bench.”

I am pretty sure that the Yanks are going to let Pavano rot down in Tampa. Who do they prefer start for the Yanks down the stretch Phil Franchise or the American “Idle”.

I love this guy. Yesterday, I remember the announcers saying when he had two strikes and the bases loaded that he should look to drive it to right center and what did he do, hit a ground rule double to right center. can’t remember the last time a player actually hit with RISP more than once.

  21. john habyan August 4th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

first yankee in history to have a name beginning with x?

  22. 34hughes August 4th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    hughes to scranton

  23. Glenn August 4th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Shelley may get a September callup but he’ll have a tough time making the team next year with the roster reconfiguration that will be done over the winter.

  24. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) August 4th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Savalas he’s my favorite player in baseball. This is my protest against his swings w/ RISP.

  25. pat August 4th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

And he gives new life to “22″ shirts and jerseys again.

  26. Fredo Corleone August 4th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

“first yankee in history to have a name beginning with x?”

Not even the 1st Xavier in team history. The immortal Xavier Hernandez pitched out of the Yankees bullpen in the strike shortened 1994 season.

Fran Healey’s middle name is Xavier.

New York has beaten Texas 10 straight times at Rangers Ballpark and hasn’t lost in Arlington since a 2-1 setback on July 19, 2005

  28. Andrew August 4th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

34hughes, you need to change that tag to 65hughes. Unless you want to make it 34marte.

Either way, it would be an interesting come-full-circle circumstance if Hughes and Kennedy both returned to the majors and pitched successfully to their capabilities for the last 2 months of the year.

  29. RhapsodyInBlue August 4th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Nady is here to stay, yesterday an example why the Met’s fans adored him, he delivers in the clutch.

He reminds me of some of the guys we had around here in the late seventies, Lou, Roy White, this boy knows how to play the game.

  30. swings & misses August 4th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

    XOXO to X

  31. RayBlay August 4th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Thanks goodness someone is taking a sarcastic tone on the whole “Xavier Nady is a hero thing”… it has been driving me insane how much you people worship him. (Not that I’m saying he’s bad…)

  32. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 4th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

what the heck is going on?

  33. RalphieD August 4th, 2008 at 4:48 pm

  34. Drive 4-5 August 4th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

After hearing all the talk about IPK and Phil Hughes returning this month the the Yankees I have one question. What ever happened to Cashman’s statement that they would have to earn their way back?

It seems to me that the only reason they are returning is because of Ponson & Rasner being ineffective. That doesn’t sound like player development to me as much as it does panic.

  35. LathamJoe August 4th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    gayle:
Great observation! Exactly what I was thinking about the XMan.
I can remember several times that Arod or Cano or Melky…even Rasner…where Kings of the Universe on here, only to be DFA’d, traded, or worse after a bad stretch!

  36. Chris NY August 4th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

“34hughes, you need to change that tag to 65hughes.”

Has Hughes said he was switching back to 65? I saw he was wearing 33 in his rehab starts…

  37. Drive 4-5 August 4th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

It’s interesting that Christian is getting a start. Paul O’Neil predicted it on yesterday’s telecast.

  38. 27 this year August 4th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

No one said still they were coming back just yet. Kennedy isn’t a definite yet just speculation.

  39. Don Pratt August 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

I remember when he was dealt to the Pirates in the panic trade by the Mets. I know he was only there for a short time but it seemed every game I watched the Mets play he was doing something important to help them win. I remember thinking at the time that getting rid of him was a huge mistake. He was one of those quiet egoless catalysts that every winning team can use to help make their great players better.

As for the flip-side of Nady – has anyone taken a look at Big Papi’s numbers since Manny left? 1-10 with no RBI. He knew more than anyone that his success was dependent on Manny.

  40. LathamJoe August 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    ChrisNY
33 is reserved for Brian Bruney….if he stays.

  41. Fredo Corleone August 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

“Nady is here to stay, yesterday an example why the Met’s fans adored him, he delivers in the clutch.”

He hit .248 w/RISP and .197 with w/RISP and 2 outs and the Mets sent him packing in the middle of a pennant race for a shaky starter (2-10, 6.63 ERA) and a reliever who had to be exhumed. How “clutch” could he have been????

  42. Chris NY August 4th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Thanks, LathamJoe. I knew someone else was wearing that, couldn’t remember who…….

  43. Chris NY August 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

other than David Wells on Saturday, of course……

  44. RhapsodyInBlue August 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Below From WikiPedia on Xavier Nady.I believe the X-man delivers, get used to it.

While he was a Met for a considerably short time, Nady was one of the fan favorites at Shea Stadium. The trade shocked several fans who thought Nady had been a valuable part of the team, slugging 14 HR (7 of them tying the game or giving the Mets the lead) and driving in 40 runs in only 75 games. The deal came as such a surprise to certain fans that a band known only as “Kuff and the Buttheads” penned a song “The Ballad of X,” a chronicle of his time with the Mets, which garnered mild publicity in baseball blogs, and Internet forums.

I don’t think anybody can be campared to Paul O’neill. I’ve heard people compare Kevin Youkilis to him, but I don’t think that is possible. Yea-Youk does play hard and has a strong demeanour to win but do you see him kicking and punching water coolers after striking out? No. He cannot be compared to the great “warrior”. You cannot compare X to Pauly either.

Also- Before yesterday I realized that everytime Nady got a big hit like a homerun, it would be when we did not need it most. Like when there was a blowout, or he’ll be up in a big spot and didn’t step up. I’m just glad yesterday he FINALLY did something when we needed it most. Go X, keep it up.

  46. Jeff NJ August 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Girardi ignored my lineup. Melky could use a rest, although JC has been so good off the bench, I doubt he can replicate his success in the lineup. It’s a good reward for him though for the great play and hit yesterday.

  47. RhapsodyInBlue August 4th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Ha Ha Ha, keep your powder dry.
    How’s he doing so far?

Nice to see Willie Randolph back and given such a fine ovation!

    Next week on Yankeeography–Xavier Nady.

  50. 2008 Yankees August 4th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

No doubt that the Nady trade could be very reminiscent of the Justice trade and pay BIG dividends in October but first they have to get there.

  51. ohgodno August 4th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

    OCNY!!!

    Nice job Mike Aviles.

  52. Scud Missile August 4th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I think X-Man is going to be a mainstay on a lot of great future Yankee teams. He’s coming into his own this year permanently.

  53. MoBoy(aka McLovin) August 4th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Mike Aviles awesome Boricua from New York.

    Came out of nowhere.

  54. Rick August 4th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Why isn’t Betemit in the lineup ? What’s the reason ? Why ??? What for ?

I usually don”t do this. But this one is just too ridiculous to ignore.

Whoever wrote this, please refrain from writing things like this.

    take that Mets.

they gave up some good talent for nothing, typical mets.

No more complaining about Giambi in the 5 hole ok?
