we should really be able to take 3 out of 4…

  2. Art Vandelay August 4th, 2008 at 12:37 am

Are there any other alternatives to Ponson we could get by Wednesday? Maybe he could hit that strip club where Billy Martin got into a fight in back in the day.

Also, is Scott Feldman related to Corey Feldman?

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 4th, 2008 at 12:38 am

So I’m guessing the Rangers aren’t known for their pitching.

  4. John H. August 4th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Haha yeah look at their ERA’s.

  5. zellyanks91 August 4th, 2008 at 12:43 am

Should be a 4 game sweep. It would be nice to take 3 out of 4 though. (at least) When you are favored in all of the matchups..you should win.

Vincente Padilla must be getting boatloads of run support.

  7. Tyler August 4th, 2008 at 12:45 am

Anything less than 3/4 is a failure.

  8. Al from BK August 4th, 2008 at 12:51 am

The Yanks need 3 of 4 and given the Rangers pitching I give it a fair shot.

  9. Al from BK August 4th, 2008 at 12:52 am

I am looking forward to the imminent return of Phil Franchise.

  10. Dewey August 4th, 2008 at 12:56 am

They said on YES today the temps will be 100 plus Monday night and near 100 for the remaining 3. Stay cool, Pete!

  11. John H. August 4th, 2008 at 1:07 am

If the bats do not come alive, we will lose.

  12. Buddy Biancalana August 4th, 2008 at 1:11 am

    John-

Did you know the Yanks scored 14 runs today?

  13. Frankie Stache August 4th, 2008 at 1:12 am

The Yanks should win the series. The Ponson game is a toss-up. I imagine the Texas hitters will maul him again like last time.

  14. Cassandra August 4th, 2008 at 1:14 am

    OMG!

    We beat the Angels!

And to think on Thursday Peter said they were unbeatable.

  15. Chofo August 4th, 2008 at 1:14 am

Hi guys, I just wanted to share this with you.

Since I´m from another country in Central America I haven´t been able to attend a Yankee game in my life. I´m in Dallas with my boss working and, as you know, the Yanks are in town, but we are leaving tomorrow morning, with no way to stay, as we have a special meeting back home tomorrow night.

So the closest to the Yankees I got was 12 hours away! Until tonight. To my surprise, I got in the elevator of the Crescent hotel (where we stayed) and there´s Pudge saying good night to Joba and Justin Christian. He was with his father, and we shook hands. When I went down to the lobby to get a coffee there´s was Mariano, and he was kind enough to take a picture with me. Of course, I talked to him in Spanish. Then came Jose Veras, another picture. By then a security agent came to ask me to not ask them to take pictures with me.

I went to the restaurant in the hotel, a sushi bar, and many from the team were there. Two tables, one with the american players (Damon, Joba, Nady, Giese) and one with latin players (Abreu, Melky, Marte, Veras). They were all having white wine with the sushi, but all very quit and polite. It was interesting to see Jeter, all suited, with the latin players. He was the first one to go to bed… Mo was in the bar, by himself, not too confortable, as he sat and got up in the same place, many times, without drinking somenthing, and then left. Ponson was having a beer with Sexson on the bar too, talking about his next start. All I could hear walking by them was “You just need to have another start….” that’s it. No Arod, Moose, Pettite or Giambi.

The security people around them wouldn´t let me aproach to the tables or even say hi to them, so I stayed for about ten minutes and left. I saw David Cone coming in on my way out.

I wanted to share this with you all as this was my first time close to the team, but hopefully not the last. I want to make it to NY this year to watch a game before the stadium goes down.

  16. Tseng August 4th, 2008 at 1:15 am

3 out of 4 is a must. This might even be sweepable.

  17. steve August 4th, 2008 at 1:17 am

we have won 10 in a row in Arlington… last loss was July 19th, 2005.

Swept 6 games in 06, swept 3 games (including a DH) last year.

    Maybe Ed Whittson is available

  20. Buddy Biancalana August 4th, 2008 at 1:21 am

    Chofo-

Thanks for sharing, not many of us get to experience what you have with the Yanks. If you get the chance, make your way to the Stadium, it’s just as amazing as you imagine.

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 4th, 2008 at 1:25 am

Chofo: la pictura que pintas es bueno y tengo una sonrisa cuando pienso de Mariano y la conversacion de Sidney Ponson!

Es una momento que recuerdas para todo de su vida :)

  22. Wang IS Taiwan August 4th, 2008 at 1:36 am

Chofo — thanks for rundown. Not many people get to see the players outside the stadium in such a large group.

  23. AJ August 4th, 2008 at 1:42 am

Judging from the pitching matchups, we should be able to take AT LEAST 3 out of 4. A sweep is very possible as well. However, I don’t have a lot of confidence in this lineup’s consistency. I believe thats what this series will come down to: If we can hit or not. We should have won the series against the Rangers up here at home but we decided to save all of our offense for one blowout game. -.-

  24. Dewey August 4th, 2008 at 1:45 am

Awesome story, Chofo. If I was in that situation I would be both nervous and excited. Im glad you got to meet a few of them.

  25. t August 4th, 2008 at 1:48 am

Need a sweep here. Tampa goes from Cleveland to Seattle to Oakland, they will probably pick up 8+ wins from those 3 series.

  26. t August 4th, 2008 at 1:51 am

Also, completely unrelated – for those of you NOT living in NY which service do you find is the best for watching games? I was thinking If i could figure out how to hook my laptop up to my TV I would get MLB.tv and use that..

  27. Chofo August 4th, 2008 at 2:08 am

    Rebeca
Your Spanish is good! keep it up.

Thanks Buddy, looking foward to wee the stadium and the city.

    Dewey,
I was nervous, specially with Mariano, as my Spanish (my main language) didn´t come as I would had like it! I invited him to my country, as he is a christian speaker. He said we could talk later, because he was going to eat someting. Of course, he didn´t say how or when we are going to talk later.

  28. MikeEff ( Nady bats 5th) August 4th, 2008 at 2:13 am

T—i find the best way is to get the Extra Innings package from cable or DirecTV

  29. mel August 4th, 2008 at 2:22 am

Won’t make any predictions for the series, but I will be very disappointed if we don’t go at least .750. There will be consequences.

  30. JGNYC August 4th, 2008 at 2:23 am

    Sweep!!!

  31. ThecanoCannon (Second Half Record--11-5) August 4th, 2008 at 2:28 am

ill be looking for a sweep but the least we can do is 3 out of 4

  32. mel August 4th, 2008 at 2:29 am

As suspected, Girardi was schooling Eddie. Too bad he got schooled by Teixeira.

“We’re asking for big outs from some young guys down there, and that’s part of their maturation process,” Girardi said. “It’s something they have to go through.”

And Giese credits Pudge for helping him pitch well today:

“He gave me all the confidence because I knew I could trust him,” Giese said of the newly acquired Rodríguez, adding, “We were just learning each other as the game went on.”

He’s a guy that can hit probably anywhere in the order,” Girardi said. “He has power, he’s good in R.B.I. situations, he’s been clutch all year, whether it was in Pittsburgh or here. He makes our lineup better, that’s for sure.”

Mufuth** then bat him in the 5th spot ! :x

Giese’s contribution has been great. We havent had a solid long-man for quite some time. Interesting to see whether he’ll keep the role when IPK gets the call up. Im hoping they send raz down.

  36. Nostalgia August 4th, 2008 at 3:56 am

Who would score more runs? The Washington Nationals current lineup, or this lineup:

    1. Tony Womack 2005
    2. Miguel Cairo 2006
    3. Andy Phillips 2006
    4. Morgan Ensberg 2008
    5. John Flaherty 2005
    6. Enrique Wilson 2002
    7. Bubba Trammell 2003
    8. Clay Bellinger 2001
    9. Wil Nieves 2007
    Bench: Bubba Crosby 2006
    Bench: Luis Sojo 2001
    Bench: Luis Sojo 1998
    Bench: Luis Sojo 1999
    Bench: Bubba Crosby 2004

These guys all make Rondell White 2002 look amazing.

Boy that 2006 bench was pretty terrible, huh?

  37. Art Vandelay August 4th, 2008 at 5:20 am

Speaking of Ed Whitson, I’m surprised that they didn’t invite him to the Old Timer’s game considering that they invited a lot of random Yankees who didn’t really play a lot for the team. At least Ed Whitson made some kind of name for himself.

And Chofo, do what you can to see a game at Yankee Stadium. Even if you could only be in NYC for a day. And if you happen to be in Manhattan- visit one Starbucks and a Duane Reade drug store. If you do that, then you’ve got the whole Manhattan experience covered.

  38. Jorge Steinbrenner August 4th, 2008 at 7:48 am

“Judging from the pitching matchups, we should be able to take AT LEAST 3 out of 4.”

pitching matchups make for nice talk but, as yesterday’s game showed, they don’t mean much in the end.

as much as i defend Melky and Rasner, yesterday’s game really was sobering in some places. While none of this affects Melky’s superlative defense, the fact that Justin F’n Christian was putting the ball in play better, and did an amazing baserunning job (and just think that this was the guy who bellyflopped trying to get to second a few weeks back), and that Dan Giese was able to shut down the team Melky couldn’t, really does make you think about what roles should be shifted.

Maybe Melky needs to get to know that bench for a little bit to get the spark he had at the beginning of the year back, and maybe we were too quick to give Giese the hook as a rotation option.

Melky has to get his bounce back. Nady can play center just as well and, while it’s not ideal, we can try Matsui and Damon in the corners for a year until (we hope) A-Jax is ready for a shot.

  39. Paco Dooley August 4th, 2008 at 8:03 am

Yeah, 3 of 4 is a must, but really, if the Yanks are going to be a real threat to Boston or Tampa, then they NEED to get all 4 of these. Even with Ponson in the mound they have the pitching advantage and the offensive advantage with their new lineup.

My guess is that they run Ponson and Ranser out there until they can replace them with IPK and Hughes. That’s also probably the reason that Cashman has held off on a deal for a pitcher. Those guys can be the 4 and 5 starters down the stretch, and even if they are inconsistent, they are a decent replacement for the current 4 and 5…
