Red Sox fans sues Yankees

August
5

This from the AP:

A Boston Red Sox fan has sued the New York Yankees and two of its fans, saying he was attacked at Yankee Stadium last summer.

Charles Hillios says he was harassed by two Yankees fans who objected to him cheering for the Red Sox last Aug. 29.

The Massachusetts resident says in the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, that security warned the Yankees fans to leave him alone. But he says the fans “viciously attacked and physically assaulted” him when he went to a concession stand.

According to the lawsuit, Hillios suffered serious injuries. It seeks unspecified financial penalties.

Tell you what, you go to the Bronx and root for the Red Sox, you have to expect some sort of beating. If this guy wins, I may sue the Yankees for making me listen to Cotton-Eye Joe every time I cover a game.

(OK, stop with your feverish do-gooder comments. I’m kidding. Sheesh)

What does the guy expect, to be honored for gracing us with his presence at the House that Ruth Built? What a girl.

  2. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) PLEASE TAKE PAVANO'S ARM INSTEAD !!!

WHAT ! Are you kidding me ! You know how many Yankees fans get into fights in Fenway ! GTFO this guy better not win or I’m purposely going to Fenway and I’ll get myself into a fight for my big pay day !!!

  3. Ken_P

That last bit was way out of line. A few taunts is one thing, but nobody deserves physical violence simply because they support the opposing team. I don’t care how intense the rivalry is, fans of all types should feel safe at whatever ballpark they choose to attend.

  4. beedogs

Stay in Mass next time where you belong, Charlie.

  5. mark

BTW, how could the mariners let rafael chavez go? wasn’t he the guy who helped refine king felix?

  6. Whitey Fraud

Maybe if he had insisted on singing that anthem to pedophilia, “Sweet Caroline.”

    Just sayin’…

  7. Whitey Fraud

    HADN’T not had.

    Jeez.

  8. S.A.-Please let Joba be alright! We need you back soon Phil Hughes.

    Is this fool for real?

  9. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) PLEASE TAKE PAVANO'S ARM INSTEAD !!!

I could use a few millions why the hell not, I’ll sing New York New York by first pitch at Fenway if this guy wins that $$$

  10. CM

I want to sue the Red Sox for nearly ruining my retinas with those god-awful red alternate jerseys and one of the worst collections of facial hair assembled outside the set of Deadwood.

  11. Chris NY

Pete, if we can make that a class action suit and add YMCA to the list of complaints, I’m in.

I really hope they start some new traditions (in terms of the music) in the new Stadium…

  12. ANSKY

    That’s it!

I’m going to plan a trip to Fenway Paak this instant. I’ll go during any game (not necessarily a Yanks game) and have a couple friends hover nearby with video cameras on me & the people around me. I won’t even cheer for the Yankees (or whatever opponent du jour) or cheer against the Red Sox. I will only be polite to the other fans and I won’t provoke them in any way … I’ll just have my Yankees hat on and that’s it. Why? Because I have faith in their fans, and I could sure use the money.

  13. Andrew

I think the Red Sox and Blue Jays are still battling neck and neck for trashiest facial hair in the league. The Jays take a hit because McGowan’s awful mutton chops are out for the year, but maybe they could use a late-season pickup of Scott Spiezio to put them over the top in the new rivalry.

  14. Chris NY

Speaking of New York, New York…. What ever happened to only playing Frank when we win the game? I think every loss I’ve been to this year, they still played Frank.

  15. Rob

Getting verbally harassed is expected. If he’s minding his own business and cheering on his team, leave the guy alone. All teams have fans who are idiots, Yankees definitely not excluded. It is annoying watching a game at an opposing stadium and the local fans don’t leave you alone. If they don’t take the bait in an inning or two, shut the hell up or pick another target.

  16. Chris NY

“That last bit was way out of line. A few taunts is one thing, but nobody deserves physical violence simply because they support the opposing team. I don’t care how intense the rivalry is, fans of all types should feel safe at whatever ballpark they choose to attend.”

Agreed, but unless the fans that beat the guy up were Yankees employees, they can’t be held accountable for every fan in the place. I’m sure it was also exaggerated for the sake of the law suit. If this guy were severly injured at a concession stand, I would think we would have heard about it long before now. He probably got a black eye, the Yankee fans got tossed, and the guy called his lawyer.

  17. Joba the Shoulder Holder

Wow… thanks for the freepass to beat Yankee fans at Fenway Park. “They got to expect it”.

  18. saucY

    lawsuits are so 1995…

  19. Paco Dooley

I usually respect Mr Abraham’s opinion, but give me a break, it’s just a game and no one ever deserves physical abuse for rooting for their team. You and an awful lot of your readers are being big overly macho babies.

  20. pat

Every team has their share of crazies.

I’ve been to many a Yanks/Sox game at the Stadium over the years and how the Sox fan acts usually dictates how they are treated. People who just cheer for their team are usually subjected to verbal barbs but most play along and it makes for fun banter.

We took my son and his friends to a Yanks/Sox game at Fenway 2 years ago in Yankee gear but reminded them they were a guest in someone else’s house. Okay to cheer, not okay to jeer.

  21. teddy

you got to be kidding, lets see you go to fenway and get jump, see how you feel. he had everyright to be their as you do. taunt him, make fun of him, but to get hiis @$$ kicked is wrong and you know what , is a hate crime

  22. Brandon (Jetes GIDP count: *18) (Starting to believe Arod will never win a championship ) PLEASE TAKE PAVANO'S ARM INSTEAD !!!

Oh shut up teddy you know this has been going on for how many years, it’s like going to Eagles game w/ a Giants cap, at your own risk and to me it sounds like he provoked the fans.

  23. Chris NY

“Wow… thanks for the freepass to beat Yankee fans at Fenway Park. “They got to expect it”.”

You’d have to have the ability to “beat Yankee fans” first. An ability I doubt any sox troll with the ability to read and write, yet nothing better to do than to go on Yankee blogs, would have.

  24. Chris NY

“how the Sox fan acts usually dictates how they are treated”

Exactly. Key word being “usually,” but either way, I doubt this guy suffered any real injuries or has any case against the Yankees. Mind you, with lawsuits the rule of thumb is always “sue everyone,” but that doesn’t mean you’ll win.

  25. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

Oh, and I’m praying Cotton Eyed Joe doesn’t make the trip to the new stadium. What a mind-numbingly seizure inducing god awful pathetic excuse for a song that is. It is my least favorite part of going to games by far. It should be banned. It should be eliminated.

  26. RhapsodyInBlue

This is a wonderful subject designed to spread love between Sox and Yankee fans.

This thread reads like A Simpson episode so far.

  27. RhapsodyInBlue

“But he says the fans “viciously attacked and physically assaulted” him when he went to a concession stand.”

According to eye witnesses to the incident, he was struck in the back of the neck with a slice of pizza.

  28. Chris NY

“I usually respect Mr Abraham’s opinion, but give me a break, it’s just a game and no one ever deserves physical abuse for rooting for their team. You and an awful lot of your readers are being big overly macho babies.”

The words “tongue-in-cheek” mean anything to you? I don’t think Pete was trying to incent riots or encourage his readers to deal out beat downs to anyone wearing red at a Yankee game….

  29. bigjf

Good to know if I ever get assaulted in Boston I can sue the Red Sox.

  30. JT

Seriously, when will Cotton-Eye Joe die? I hope they leave it at the old stadium. It’s ‘96 mojo wore off years ago.

  31. BBB (X gon'give it to ya)

“Wow… thanks for the freepass to beat Yankee fans at Fenway Park. “They got to expect it”

ha, those punks would have to have it be 10 or 15 on 1 to beat up a Yankee fan. Cause lord knows drunken frat boys don’t exactly inspire fear in opponents in 1 on 1 fights! :D

  32. teddy

yea lets assualt a guy for because he likes another, thats a hate crime. how would you fweel if you got beat up because of your skin color

  33. Tom

    Oh, that’s rich.

  34. Chris NY

“I usually respect Mr Abraham’s opinion, but give me a break, it’s just a game and no one ever deserves physical abuse for rooting for their team. You and an awful lot of your readers are being big overly macho babies.”

Do the words “tongue-in-cheek” mean anything to you?

  35. RhapsodyInBlue

You would think all Yankee fans who visit Fenway would be entitled to some compensation for being forced to listen to countless renditions of “Sweet Caroline”.

  36. Jeet Skeet

this lawsuit is bullsh*t.. you go to any rivals stadium and its going down! Back to the guy that mentioned its like going to an eagle’s game with a giants cap…yea well i went there with my ELI jersey and was nearly pistol whipped by an eagles fan, had to dodge a car in the parking lot that was coming right at me, and not to mention my white jersey was no longer white after the game from the various condiments and food thrown at it

  37. Chris

I was at a yanks/sox game in Fenway a couple eyars ago (04 to be exact and to be more exact, the arod/tek bench clearing brawl fight game). I had a yankee hat on, with an arod practice t-shirt on. I barely got heckled the entire time. The ppl in front of us busted my balls a lil bit but it was all in good fun. All i got was a bunch of dirty looks. FYI…

  38. Jeet Skeet

but im not gunna go sue the eagles..enter at your own risk!!

  39. Chris NY

“I was at a yanks/sox game in Fenway a couple eyars ago (04 to be exact and to be more exact, the arod/tek bench clearing brawl fight game). I wouldn’t take that to mean Sox fans are so much friendlier or more welcoming than Yankee fans. They’re just as bad, if not worse up there. Everyone has their different experiences, and it largely depends on how the visiting fan is acting/reacting, and obviously on how crazy/dumb/childish everyone involved is…

  40. Whitey Fraud

Booze is often a catalyst for mischief.

  41. Chris NY

“but im not gunna go sue the eagles..enter at your own risk!!”

Yeah, there’s a reason they have a Jail inside the stadium (or used to, not sure about their new stadium).

  42. eric

Could i have sued when some guy hit me during the 99 playoffs in fenway?

  43. Anthony

It depends on where you are sitting. Sit in the cheap seats and you’ll deal with drunken young guys being jerks. Sit in the expensive seats and the people are generally older and more mature, not looking to start a fight at a baseball game.

  44. eric

When the Yankees were a juggernaught in the late 90’s, Fenway was not friendly at all, and is much worse than Yankee Stadium. It was almost dangerous to go.

  45. beedogs

i wore my pinstripes to fenway, in the bleachers, on the day they clinched in 1995, back when i was in college in boston. i got a lot of crap for it but sox fans weren’t nearly as pathetic and awful as they are today.

  46. MD Mike

The way this reads, he was minding his own business helping disabled children to read the bible in braille and a few evil Yankee employees ran from out of nowhere and beat him up. There is always two sides to these stories, and I wonder what really happened.
If he wins, I hope they deny access to everyone wearing Boston garb.

  47. raul

Pete you are such a tool.Is the NY Yankees franchise being sued,or Yankees fans?

If the Yankees fans come to beantown, having to share your awful unidentifiable food, and seat with the big gey rats,is punishment enough! We won’t mention the roaches.

  48. Chuck

    (1) Red Sox fans that go to Yankee Stadium wearing hats and jerseys expect to be engaged in verbal fistcuffs with Yankee fans. They “assume the risk” and are as much as fault as those thrown rhetoric rockets.

    (2) No one should be physically assaulted at the stadium regardless of what they say or wear or who they root for. That being said, I doubt this guy was physically assaulted — but who knows — caps getting knocked off or an “accidently spilled beer” happens.

    (3) I am more offended by the dancing ground crew and YMCA than with Cotton Eye Joe. Enough already. Can we give it a rest in the stadium?

  49. JJNJ

beedogs, small world… I was also in the bleachers at that game in ‘95 wearing my Yankee shirt. I dug up my ticket stub last year when they finally won the division again lol.

I went to Fenway this past series & wore a Yankee shirt. All I got were a bunch of dirty looks & some comments in jest, but overall it was fine. I think it definitely depends on how you act & where you sit.

If you’re assaulted at a game, you sue the person who hit you, not the team. That’s just stupid.

  50. islesfan

The report makes no reference to the “victims” behavior prior to the incident, the details of the “attack” or the injuries that the “victim” suffered. The lack of details lead me to believe that it wasn’t very serious and this is a frivolous lawsuit.

Now if you want to read about a serious fan attack and one that deserves to be heard in our judicial system, click here:

When I go I just prey the termites haven’t finished their job,on the antiquated ugly green shack, while the game is going on,And yes the rats ask you to scoot over in your seat.It seems they are rwgular house guest.

When I go to beantown,I can’t sit behind home plate, the sickly green wall makes me want to throw up.Heaven forbid I throw up on one of those heathens,it would be on!

  54. Rishi

Do we even know what “viciously attacked and physically assaulted” means?

Seems kind of vague to me…and it doesn’t say what this person may or may not have done to instigate

  55. Drive 4-5

Any seson ticket holder will tell you the most dangerous time for a Red Sox fan to sport their colors in Yankee Stadium isn’t during Red Sox games. There are enough Red Sox fans during those games that they mostly are ignored.Unless, of course, they choose to engage us. “Pleasantries” are then exchanged.

When an adult Red Sox fan walks into Yankee Stadium during a contest that does not involve Boston, he/she will hear a few catcalls or boos. I’ve been in Fenway and it is no different. The problem is that a large number of Red Sox fans strut their stuff like idiots (Manny wannabes) and provoke a larger reaction.

On July 19 vs Oakland I watched a very drunk female Sox fan walk up the aisle in Tier Section 7 and flip off the entire section on her way to her seat. Not long afterwards, she was escorted out by Security.

I’m not saying that Yankee fans are angels. But the fact is, the most obnoxious team in baseball is supported by the most obnoxious fans in sports. Growing up in and living in Mass I loved the Celtics all my life. This past season I couldnt even bring myself to root for them and actually rooted against them. Who in their right mind would want to sit side by side and root along side a Boston sports fan? Not me.

  56. george

please tell me this is in a court under the jurisdiction of the President of Red Sox Nation.

  57. Chris NY

“Pete you are such a tool.Is the NY Yankees franchise being sued,or Yankees fans?”

As Pete QUOTED THE ASSOCIATED PRESS: “A Boston Red Sox fan has sued the New York Yankees and two of its fans.”

Notice the words “NEW YORK YANKEES AND TWO OF ITS FANS.” Than means he is suing, the NY Yankees AND the two fans that he claims assaulted him. Got it skippy?

  58. Russell NY

What a wuss, go cry to mommy.

  59. Red Sox Fans

Hmm I went to a Sox game at Yankee stadium a few weeks ago and everything was fine. However, I made sure I was not obnoxious. I did recieve a few stares walking around the city decked out in Sox gear, on the other hand.

This is what ruins the fun of the rivarly: dumb fans. I’ve read about so many stupid Sox and Yankee fans getting into fights. I even read one story about a Yankee fan running over a Sox fan in his car. I don’t care who supports which team, there are tons of dumb@$$es on both sides of the rivalry.

With that being said, suing the Yankees because their fans attacked you is right up there with suing McDonalds cause your coffee was hot.

  60. Red Sox Fan

Oh god, sorry for that bold-letter word! I did not realize typing it like that would be considered “offensive.” I apologize for that and please feel free to delete the comment.

I guess that was my dumb move of the day.

  61. yui

Your dumb move is calling yourself a redsoxfan, that’s a no brainer

  62. Red Sox Fan

Yui - Be nice! I’ve posted on here several times and have always tried to be respectful. I’m not just some ignorant Sox fan who bashes everything Yankee.

  63. yui

Why are you on a Yankees board at all?

  64. SoxFan

First of all, thank god the crappiest stadium in all of baseball is being torn down. Secondly, I dont doubt that someone was physically assaulted in New York. Yankees fans have the least amount of class in all of sports. I was there last summer and all I did was wear a Sox hat and not say a word. What happened? I got a full beer poured on my head. Yeah thats class right there. I am there with my 12 year old brother and that happens. Way to go yankees fans. Idiots.

  65. rod-knee

To quote a good friend of mine,”Some of the most vile sacks of human garbage can be found occupying the seats of fenway park.” Now that was a bit harsh, but it sounds to me like this guy just wants a little scratch because he got embarrased in front of his woman, or man, or whoever he was with (this is the willineum after all). I have a feeling this is going to blow over very quietly. Hows that for classy?

  66. Raven

What a clever idea! Now I’m gonna sue Osama bin Laden for disturbing the peace of my mind.

  67. lefty

i was there with him, he was drunk before we got to the stadium, and yes he asked for it trust me he kept teasing the yankees fan remember the yanks lost big time and he was loving it.
