Nothing better than cruising up the 55 North listening to California Love in the car and enjoying the Cali breezes.
But duty called and I made a few calls to try and get beyond the statistics in terms of how Phil Hughes pitched last night.
The man himself texted to say that he felt “felt real good.” Chad Jennings, who covered the game, felt the same way. He was impressed with how Hughes commanded his fastball and his cutter.
Nardi Contreras: “I thought he looked good. His fastball was good, the velocity was what we expected. He needs to refine his changeup, but his breaking pitches were there.”
Thanks to all the fans who sent e-mails with their impressions as well. A guy named Chris sent a photo of the scoreboard radar gun showing that Hughes hit 95. There’s your proof.
Meanwhile, some good news to share today. The Journal News picked up a few first-place awards in the annual New York Associated Press Association writing contest.
My boy Sam Borden won for a collection of his columns. If you read Sam’s stuff, you know how good he is. And the LoHud Yankees Blog won first place as well.
If I get any money out of the deal (which is unlikely), drinks are on me at Foley’s.
