A lost weekend in California
-
- August
- 10
Where to start?
- The Yankees were 2 for 12 with RISP. They advanced a runner to third with less than two outs seven times and scored only three runs.
- You can debate whether A-Rod should try and steal third with Nady up. But once he gets thrown out, it’s a bad play. It doesn’t matter that he might have been safe, it was close enough to get called out.
- Joe Girardi said he didn’t want to use Mo for six outs, only four or five. I can’t fault him for not intending to use him for two innings, not with a game tomorrow.
That said, Marte can’t walk Mike Napoli.
- Wilson Betemit has to field that ball any way he can. Instead he turned and ran for the bag. You have to know the situation better than that.
- The Yankees had leads in all three games this weekend and lost them all.
The Yankees have dropped 10 of their last 15 and play nine of their next 12 on the road. You can’t declare the season over, not with a four-game deficit in the wild card.
But the Yankees are not playing with any sense of purpose and haven’t for about two weeks now.
Here’s Joe Girardi’s postgame:
Sorry for the poor sound. The press conference was held in a hallway, so there are carts going by and random fans passing through.

Glad to hear Girardi say that someone should have gotten to that Figgins ball.
Expect to see a different team in Minny.
lol @ espn.com
They have “Angles walk off to complete sweep of Yankees”.
Maybe that’s not so lol.
Go Yankees.
“You can’t declare the season over”
Sure you can. Shaky bullpen, horrible situational hitting, and ragtag rotation aren’t going to get it done.
There is so much blame to go around. It’s not convenient enough to put this sweep on one person. I’m a die hard fan for over 20 years, but trying to set my sights on next April. Wish I could, but they’re still in reach of the WC. Can anyone out there convince me that this team cannot only make the playoffs, but win a pennant?
This team is breaking my heart.
But I still have hope they can turn things around somehow. Beat the Twins.
maybe now girardi will end his love affair with betemit and realize he is a terrible baseball player.
betemit is the next david ortiz! he will “figure it out” soon and start hitting bombs.
Steve, you are right about Betemit. He is just not good. There’s no way around it. But is Sexson all that much better of an alternative? It’s kind of a lose/lose situation.
Hank cannot be happy… between the Mets heated pennant race, the SB Champion Giants, and Favre… the Yankees will fade into oblivion in September all the way until the Hot Stove season starts.
put a fork in them.
scott – both are terrible baseball players. but atleast sexon plays a good 1B. betemit looks drunk out there.
We really do have an awful bench… the only useful player is Christian.
I kind of want to root for the Rays and Red Sox because I don’t want the Yankees to just fall into a playoff spot… I don’t think they deserve it and it just crushes me to think that they’re not the team I expected to take the field at the start of this season
“but atleast sexon plays a good 1B. betemit looks drunk out there.”
Thanks for the laugh. After today’s game, I really needed one.
“Can anyone out there convince me that this team cannot only make the playoffs, but win a pennant?”
I suspect no one here can convince you of that.
Steve-good point on how they’re both bad. Like I said, it’s a lose/lose situation. I put that on Girardi. Betemit is not as versatile as Girardi would like him to be. An occasional spot in the middle of the infield would be more appropriate. Betemit is being used outside of his capabilities. Just one of the many unresolved issues this year.
No blame for Damaso Gagne?
i cant wait till 2009, HANK say something, you spark are team
Good comment on Damaso. What a horrible dissapointment.
I can’t blame Marte too much, not after watching Veras and Ramirez yesterday.
Are the Yankees going to win a handful of games? Yes, of course! As bad as they are, they will win. However, they will hover around .500, which is what they have been all season long. They do not deserve to be in the post-season, and they need a MAJOR overhaul in the fall.
Today’s offense (and offensive) performance is a reflection of all the shortfalls of Cashman (bringing all of those has-beens in the past few years) and Girardi (not a good manager at all).
The standard for being safe is just being safe. You do not have to be safe by a lot, you just have to be safe. ARod was safe as every replay demonstated and had a right to stay on third. He’s not wrong for doing something because the umpire in incompetant. Stir up something else.
Yeah… when will Hank speak up again? Speak Hank.. please…
Who cares what Hank thinks. Opening his big mouth doesn’t do anything but embarrass the franchise.
People can yell, scream, and pound fists all they want to the media – but none of that is going to make the everyday lineup younger and more energetic or bring back the horses like Joba, Wang, Matsui, and Posada.
Stop confusing Hank with George. Hank doesn’t even follow baseball.
I think Marte is just tired… he has surpassed his IP total from last year already.
He has been very good when used only 1 inning and nasty against lefties. You can’t push the envelope with him though.
I am nowhere near ready to call fro Girardi’s job. He is capable of winning a WS. Cashman needs to go, and his replacement has a challenging job of overhauling some of these long term contracts. I need some convincing that this can effectively done. Cashman to Philly.
this team is Mel hall smart.. this is the mark whiten, mel hall, steve sax yankees.
they are such a bad team, terrible clutch hitting, they never make a big play offensively or defensively.
the yare soft at all corners…
srod the greatest soft player then bobby(wall) abreu, and then it gets almost worse then there.
all you need to know about the game ending play is Mo’s reaction a tru pro and smart smart plater.
Cano is a moron who is totally clueless at least Melky has an excuse he is not very talented but Cano is not as good as pedroia a 5 ft. 6 guy who swings like baeb ruth with avg. range at best….
this team is pathetic and infuraiting and listening to all the bad luck excuse or injury BS shows how stupid many of you are.. Interesting how the angels do not have the yanks bad luck!!!OOOPS that is right they make the plays and play hard.. Vladdy got thrown out at 3rd what did the angels do? Nothing continued to push and get hits when it matters…
yeah lets blame it on everyone except the players. cashman, girardi, kevin long, gene monahan, hell hank steinbrenner.
it is not poor arod, jeter, abrue, giambi’s fault nah..
they are real gamers!!!!!SOrry I am laughing.. lets look at some interesting info.
giambi, arod, abreu, cano, and others have never ever won SH-t.
That is the fact these soft physically and mentally players have won Jack sh-t.
that is the bottom line..arod has won nothing in his career but let’s celebrate he got a hit with RISP todaY, HALLELUJAH PRAISE THE L-RD….
“Cashman needs to go, and his replacement has a challenging job of overhauling some of these long term contracts. I need some convincing that this can effectively done. Cashman to Philly.”
What has Cashman failed to do this year, exactly? He made the best moves that were possible at the deadline, there is really nothing he could have done different except for give up a good prospect for a garbage back of the rotation pitcher which would have been a mistake when Jarrod Washburn threw up a start close to what Kennedy gave on Friday. He wasn’t trading the farm for a rental (Sabathia) or an oft-injured starter (Harden), so don’t try to play those cards.
The long term contracts you vaguely mention are mostly expiring ones, save for Jeter, A-Rod and Posada.
Brian Cashman can’t drive runners in from 3rd with less than two outs. He can only field a team that has players who are historically good in those situations, which he’s done. He also can’t prevent injuries, and in fact he’s done as much as could be expected of him to make up for those injuries. Blaming him is a cop-out, in my mind. The Giambi, Cano, Jeter and A-Rods of the team deserve the blame.
No fire in anybody’s eyes, heart, or bellies. This team in content with mediocrity. The passion for winning is not visible on any face. Dead men walking. Professional salary collectors.
Wholesale changes coming ….
Watching some of the players ( Jeter , A-Rod , Rivera , Abreu ) as they slowly walked off the field stunned, and dazed and maybe a sense of disbelief as to what just happened…..Once again the bottom of the Angels lineup just killed The Yanks…..Time is now of paramount concern, as the games tick away…..Things are getting tight
Nothing more to add then what has been said here. Each of these games was within the Yankees reach and they found a way to lose each one. Poor starting, poor bullpen, poor situational play, poor managing, poor clutch play…is there anything left?? As professionals each and every Yankee should be embarassed. The last play to today symbolzied the season…just not enough. The YES announcers commented “that’s waht you get for not having an experienced first baseman”. There’s so much in that comment. The fact that with $206M payroll you need to rely upon Betimint??? Or you need to claim Richie Sexson off waivers?? Or that the 2nd highest paid player in baseball does not play every inning of every game?? For all those clamering for to sign CC Sabathia and Mark Teixera, before you get your wish look at first base today.
Watched all three. All tough losses – Yankees did lose to the BEST team in baseball. They hung with them and scored enough runs in all three games to possibly win.
I usually am very critical of Arod but he was trying to win a game.
They will come around, and theres still time. The Angels have beaten up on everyone. I would not want to be peaking as they are right now. You cant play that way forever.
Kennedy down? again? should have traded him in the winter. I would like to know how many games he has started for the Yankees and how many of those the Yankees lost? Add in Igawas few and Hughes few and if we played 500 during games started by these three I wonder where`d they be?
There were a few plays in the fourth which A-Rod screwed up but Nettles would have made. There was a throw home that inning which Jeter ate which Dent would have completed easily.
My wife said, “Who are they?”
We play the cards we’re dealt. The newest Yankee is Billy Traber.
IPK has been traded to the Royals for a few former major leaguers now in AA who will be no help to anyone but at least will do no harm. (This last was, of course, a lie.)
It is almost like every one who have been positive about the team just decided not to post for now.
When the team is doing bad it is only natural to lose hope.
At the same time, I believe that we are only 4 games out in the WC race and the teams we are chasing are playing as bad as Yanks.
I want to believe that we have seen the worst and with Minny series we start gaining confidence. We are not as bad a team as it looks now.
By the end of August we will be close to WC lead and then we will make the move. What will be ironic is that Pavano will be part of that resurrection.
Let us win tomorrow. Slow but steady progress will win the WC.
Guiseppe Franco ,
“Who cares what Hank thinks. Opening his big mouth doesn’t do anything but embarrass the franchise.”
We usually play well after he says somethings, and with 1/4 of the season left, we need to get going.
Absoltuely the players deserve blame, but so does Cashman. He talks a good game, but things don’t materialize. Get ready fro another long playoff drought. We are screwed.
Is Cash supposed to have a backup plan for our backup plan? Maybe he relied to heavily on rookie starters. We lost our leader Jorge Posada (don’t discount the blow that was to the team), We lost our dh our 30 hr 100 rbi!dh, We lost our 19 game winner. I mean what do you want?!
This was probably the worst week of Yankee baseball this season. It started off with losing Joba for who knows how long. In the meantime the offense continued to suck in every facet of the game. The bullpen has imploded beyond recognition.
When the offense put runs on the board, as scarce as they were, the bullpen did a great job of blowing every single lead.
On top of that, all of the ridiculous managerial moves, lefty/righty crap, stupid pitching matchups, etc. over extending certain pitchers. Girardi built the pen into a formidable and effective part of our team. Since Farnsworth left and Pudge was aquired, the pitching staff has become a concern. And no, I am not blaming Pudge.
40 something games left and 4GB. Not impossible for any team but the Yankees are not just any team…they are a horrible mess right now and something needs to change.
This year seems lost.
2009 Line Up
OF Nady/Matusi/Damon (Possible free agent signings: Carl Crawford/Adam Dunn)
3B ARod
SS Jeter
2B Cano
1B Teixeria/Chipper Jones (Definate free agent signing here-
I think Chipper would move to 1st for the Yankees-it extends his career)C Posada/Molina (I don’t think they keep Pudge)
DH Manny/Matusi (Yes, that Manny. He said he wants to come to NY, He can give an OF guy a day of rest. He does to Boston what he has done to us for so many years.)
Rotation
Sabathia
Wang
Joba
A.J. Burnett
Mussina
Hughes
The big free agent signings are, in order of importance, Sabathia, Manny, Burnett, Teixeria.
Trade Melky for a proven long reliever.
The Yankees open the new Stadium with a world series win in 2009.
“Can anyone out there convince me that this team cannot only make the playoffs, but win a pennant?â€
Baseball is a funny game. Through the years tons of teams have looked dead, only to make the playoffs, and in some cases even win it all.
This is a transition year. With that said, I think they’ll still make a good run at the playoffs. If they get in, anything can happen.
This team could make the playoffs. Only 4 games out. The playoffs are a crap shoot. If, a big if, the Yankees get hot in September, they could win a pennant.
I don’t see them winning the wild card.
4 games behind the Red Sox, 2 behind the White Sox. Then the Yankees in third place with the Ranges 7.5 games behind the Red Sox (3.5 behind the Yankees).
I don’t see either Sox team collapsing or playing below their current winning percentage. Granted, all three teams are old and injuries can always happen but the Yankees have the worst starting pitching out of all of them.
My question is this…does anyone think that Arod & Jeter have completely changed their swings from last year? Jeter looks like he is hitting with his hands with no lower leg and Arod just looks he is hitting to make contact and letting his power drive the ball. To me, neither is attacking the ball.
This appears to be a long term problem. A few moves here and there will not suffice. An overhaul is needed. Maybe we can get things straight before the Knicks do. Has Cashman been listening to Isiah???
These past three days, scratch that…the past 2 weeks have been very disappointing. This team seems to be, I dunno? Sleepwalking?
There were games where they had their chances and they just let them slip away. Those hurt the most.
But, they are still in the hunt for the WC and we just have to see what happens.
I’m still hopeful about this team and no..I am not nuts.
SDYankee, I watched Texeria today make two great plays that he makes look routine…I was allowed early entry and watched BP….Texeria is such a solid hitter from both sides….I understand the whole Posada issue, but damn he would solve that issue for at least five years….I still hold out that they’ll be playing in October as there is many games remaining vs. the teams they’re chasing…..Stuart,,,The Yanks will be making the Playoffs…...
NYY 90-72 – BOS 88-74 -2
TB 85-77 -5
Pat M
Teixara want $20M per year for 8+ years. Yes he looks good today but how many of us, 7 years were ooooh Giambi’s a free agent let’s sign him…and over the last 4 years he’s been Dave Kingman and with him the Yankees have won nothing! $20M postion players don’t win titles.
how many years does Jeter get?
Teixiera is overrated again no one can say damn we lost that game because of Teix…. we lost because of our offense plaine and simple. The offense I’ve been saying this all year long. The OFFENSE. Kevin Long deserves a pink slip after this series, what hitting methods are being repeated other than GIDPs..he needs to be fired no excuses in that dept. send a freaking message to the offense.
A few other things my god did Betemit ever freeze on that ground ball or what.
These are not good signs, not good signs at all.
ANdrew what long term contracts are you talking about??
the yanks do not have any bad long term contracts except arod, mo, and jorge.
I am not arods #1 fan but he is a very productive player, mo no need to support his deal, and Jorge has 3 yrs. left.
Damon and matsui 1 yr. so the long term contract issue you are talking about DOES NOT EXIST. they have zero bad bad contracts… so what the F are you talking about?
yeah sign CHipper Jones after all he is old and injury prone and morons like you think that is a good idea you have not watched the yanks for the last 5 yrs. and chipper jones will not leave ATL. so why do you poststhis sh-t anyway?
Yeah AJ BUrnett because of his durability why can’t we sign his twin also!!!!!!
yeah it is cashmans fault that arod and giambi and abreu wet there pants when men are on base and cano is one of the most frustrating dumb players I have ever seen…
I will add this I don’t like Robi Cano right now. Not at all.
Patm the Yanks may make the playoffs they still are soft, dumb, and unclutch but yes they still may make the playoffs..
Tex is a nice player never ever worth what he will get. Let the Angels waste there money on him…
pat,
you are right no tex please.bring up miranda in sept ,and hope he makes team out of spring training. we need pitching.and sabathia was more like a number 2 in al.possibly sheets.
The big get this offseason needs to be CC and do not add another bat until you realize what team you have.
I agree with the poster who said that the Yankees have a bunch of players who have never won anything—losers is the term I think that was used.
It does make a little sense. They have a collection of guys that have been on teams that have never won anything. Aside from Damon, how many position players have the Yankees brought in over the last few years that have won anything. We’ve had a couple of pitchers (The Unit and the Mash Unit) but other than that nothing but guys from losing team—“the losers.”
It just seems to me that most of these guys – starting with the Stache-Anti-Stache – have come to the Yankees expecting the magic to find them. The teams that won made their own magic. Played hard every second of every day no matter the score, situation or standings. These guys just don’t know how to win. They keep waiting, like today, looking for someone else to step up and make the big play. Each game requires every guy to put the team first and stats second.
EX: Nady swings at the first pitch and grounds to third. In that situation he needs to make sure that he either hits the ball to the right side of the infield or gets a fly ball. Then Abreu runs home. No outs with a lefty coming up and they have the contact play on? No idea who is on the hook for that play, but just dumb baseball. So here’s hoping for a nice 20 game losing streak so we can get the first pick in the draft!
Anyway, I am venting. Just sick of losing to this team – because they beat us they way we used to beat everyone esle.
What makes this a disastrous “long-term problem”, exactly? Do you have no concept of the fact that Giambi, Abreu, Mussina, Pettitte and Pavano’s contracts are up this year, with Damon and Matsui to follow after next year?
Have you not heard about the fact that the Yankees have rebuilt the farm system in the past oh, 5 years or so? Have you been completely living under a rock, but still decided to troll over here and be Mr. Gloom and Doom, rip the most visible front office guy instead of the under-achieving players, and try to make a weak Isiah Thomas reference? Give me a break…if people want to rip this year’s team and say this year is a complete disaster, great. But it’s getting a little ahead of things to try and say that this year’s problems will linger into 2009 and beyond.
Five year deal, overpay slightly on the annual, but nothing more than 5 years…He’ll catch another contract when he’s 33….Giambino was King George’s doing…I mean the length of that contract was sick, many of us knew it back in 2001….It was a panic move after the 01 flare in Game 7…Remember they had a terrible time scoring runs in that series, and it wasn’t just against Shilling and Randy….The lost of Matsui and to a llesser degree Jorge has left too many easy ab’s for opposing pitchers….Considering all of it, they are still only 4 games back of Boston…..
“ANdrew what long term contracts are you talking about??”
None, that was another guy who claims the team is littered with bad long-term contracts as a result of Brian Cashman, the real cause of this underwhelming 2008 season and the worst New York sports executive since Isaiah Thomas, apparently.
I am very aware that there aren’t any huge long-term deals for position players after this year is over (save A-Rod, of course). That’s one nice thing to keep in mind which hasn’t been a reality in the last 3-4 years, that at least you’re not looking at mostly the same team for 2009.
Jeter signed 10yr/$189M which expired in 2010. Not sure your point, you think Tex is worth 8/$160?? Maybe Jeter’s sub .300 avg is the beginning of the decline. He’s having career lows in every offensive category.
Take Wang and Posada and Matsui out last year or the year before and the Yanks don’t make the playoffs then either. This team is 1 hot streak away from a wild card spot right now, which all things considered is more then we could possibly hope for given the injuries this year. Time is running out tho…
“Who cares what Hank thinks. Opening his big mouth doesn’t do anything but embarrass the franchise.â€
We usually play well after he says somethings, and with 1/4 of the season left, we need to get going.
If you want to believe that Hank Steinbrenner acting like a fool and opening his big mouth has anything to do with the Yankees winning games – well, I guess that’s your prerogative.
But the truth of the matter is that the players roll their eyes, shake their collective heads, and laugh at his moronic comments just like we fans do.
Hank is anything but a motivational speaker. He’s just a moron who happens to be the Boss’ son and should be running his daddy’s restaurant and horse ranch instead of the New York Yankees.
Hank doesn’t know a damn thing about baseball. The only thing he knows is making a fool of himself to the media.
Now Hal Steinbrenner is the smart one. I have no problems with him at all.
And if you’ve noticed the past year, Hal doesn’t give many interviews and has been pretty quiet.
It doesn’t take a blowhard to run this team. It takes someone with business sense and smart baseball people.
Hank is neither.
no more gift or we owe u contracts like posada and rivera.they each got one too many years on their contracts.i love both these guys and was a fan before they arrived but lok at their ages.it will hurt in long run.arod should of got seven years.team options only.
Don Vito, I have to hand it to you, you’re not backing off one bit from your prediction that TB will collapse. Well done, sir!
As for some of the 2009 predictions, did Manny really force his way out of Boston and any chance of his option being picked up so he could take a lower-money deal with NY? Did he sign up with Boras because he DOESN’T want his last multi-year big deal?
And who is this phanton proven reliever that a) exists and b) will be sent to NY for Melky?
Cashman is the guy trying to get rid of the longterm contracts, most of the longterm contracts were driven by George and that Tampa faction. S*** happens but Cash’s big blemish is Kei Igawa.
players currently on the 25 man who will NOT be here in 2009 (IMHO):
betemit/giambi/ponson/rasner/irod/sexson/traber
other 40 man/60day losses:
duncan/pavano
possible replacements:
chamberlain/hughes/matsui/melancon/posada/and any combo of albaladejo/britton/patterson/wright etc etc
so, it appears our main needs are a 1B or platoon there and a true utility IF
questions:
do we bring back abreu/mussina/pettite on one year deals w/ club options?
is miranda (over .300 at swb) any sort of option?
do we invest a lot of the expiring money in sabathia and texeira or do we explore lesser (and much cheaper) options?
with the complicated arbitration and rule V procedures, i truly expect to see possibly 15/20 new names on the 2009 40 man roster! SIGN CASHMAN ASAP
It is most obvious to reference the underachieving players. I thought that was an unwritten assumption. The most “visible front office guy” has more say than anyone (aside maybe Hank) for who puts on pinstripes. Like I’ve said, blame needs to be scattered. How can we blame someone like Betemit or an inexperienced Cano for this year. I like Cano, but that multiyear deal appears as though it may backfire. By the same logic, Melky should not be responsible if we now pay him and he continues to hit miles below 300. Next year we have injury prone Damon, Posada, Matsui, and of course Hughes. This can be overcome. A new GM is needed to make many key decisions, Andrew.
brandon,
if you are right and brian is still here and has control there will be no tex or sabathia .fill this team with good not superstar players, not celebrities.it’s gotten so sad to watch.they are just not that good anymore.new blood is needed.
Yes Russ, new blood is needed. We need to lose some battles to eventually win a war.
The play to end the game happens when you have an idiot who is not a natural 1st baseman playing 1st. Girardi makes a lot of stupid moves and pinch hitting Betemit for Sexson is another one of them. Late in the game you want your best defense out on the field..so taking out Sexson made no sense. Was Betemit’s at bat supposed to be any different then Sexson’s?? No…they are both awful. To see Betemit not dive for the ball or even go after it was absolutely pathetic. That is why when you play someone out of position it hurts you. It was not the 1st time we have seen Betemit not know if he should go after the ball or not.
Well Torre don’t look so bad now does he? The yankees will not make the playoffs,it’s official. If the team is going to play like this,I’d unload the payroll.Lose this bad with less than 212 million,it’s silly. This team is tore up from the floor up!
they do not mesh together.they make a mess together.i still watch all the games and root hard but that won’t make arod carry this team.it is not giradi’s fault either
I agree that there is a long-term problem in the Yankee organization. Here are a few reasons why:
– What the heck are the Yanks gonna do with Posada? He’s signed for four years and takes so much pride in what he does. There is a very good chance that he will not fully recovere from this shoulder injury and therefore his catching and hitting abilities will drop. He may end up playing first. – That leads us to Tex. First off, there may be no spot for him to play. Secondly, why is everyone assuming that he will be so easy to sign. – Our two big minor league pitchers are not living up to expectations. IPK can pitch in the minors, sure, but gets knocked around in the bigs. And Hughes is so injury prone, he may never play a full season. Finally, neither of them have a win yet! – No good catching options at the moment. Molina can’t hit and is not an everday player. Posada we have discussed. Moeller is not impressive. And Pudge has been unimpressive handling the pitching and hitting. – Jeter is aging and is on the decline. All his numbers are dropping (execpt for the GIDPs!), but he will still be playing next year. – A-Rod is not clutch. Even if this team makes it to October, their biggest player will not produce.
We need prospects playing with the potential to improve. The good players are aging and the young ones don’t have potential. Look at the BoSux for example. Pedroia, Masterson, Ellsbury, Lester…the list goes on. These are the future of the Sux. Who will be playing for the Yanks in six years?
Jack
It’s no all doom and gloom.
I agree with you on Tex…he will be difficult to sign and while a 5/80M would to my liking, Scott Boras does not consult me and like you said, Jorge may be playing 1st base next year.
As for our minor league pitchers…we are 1 for 3, Joba has looked like the real deal so with Joba, Wang and Hughes (all under 29) that’s a good start and a 4th and 5th starter can be found.
A-Jax and Miranda are not far behind…so the Yanks have plenty of young talent, albeit the Sox have more.
The big difference between the Yankees and Sox this year is April. Since the mid if May (i hate to say it…when A-rod came back), the Yanks are playing .600 ball.
I beleive with a few minor tweaks the Yanks can contend next year. If not still make a run this year.
Were are the yankees looking when the young Phenom’s are out there.Who ever is doing the scouting is missing the great players.
Arod was on a mission last yr to ger his big fat contract, and now he has his head in other palces than the game. This team stinks, and should be dismantled.8 yrs of some of the worst losses is enough.
I think this team has a good shot at the WS – in a few years. They need to build up their team with young talent and rid themselves of “superstars.” The Angels have no superstars, they have good players. For every solo homer A-Rod has, the Angels probably have a double w/ the bases loaded.
If they can’t beat the best team in baseball, how wiil they get to the WS?
A lost weekend, hell more like a lost team.
Jack
Agreed…a few supestars (aka Vlad, Hunter) + awesome pitching and role players…hmm that sounds familiar…let me see Jimmy Key, Andy Pettitte of old, David Cone, El Duque, Scott Brosius, Shane Spencer, Karim Garcia, Ruben River, Jeter, Williams, O’Neill and Tino…some superstars, some role players, but not an all-star (aka overpaid) player at every position.
I still don’t think we are that far away though.
I’ve been saying this since 2004 and I’ll say it again:
The baseball gods – for whatever reason – don’t like the Yankees.
“Secondly, why is everyone assuming that [Tex] will be so easy to sign.”
Ditto with Sabathia
“Well Torre don’t look so bad now does he?”
Although it was time for the old man to step down, how bad does that look if the Yanks don’t make it to October and Clueless Joe does in LA – with Mattingly in tow no less!
It’s do or die time starting right now and with the yankees having their two best on the dl, we have serious problems. Imagine if Mussina wasn’t having a comeback year? – 15 would be 9 and 4 out of the wild card would be 9 – No one would be talking about the playoffs.
Bottom line – I’m disappointed, injuries I can understand, but I still feel this team can do better and getting swept now shows no heart.
If you’re going to bat for Molina, do so with Pudge. Sub Giambi for Sexson, not Betemit. Say what you will about Giambi, his defense has been above average this year and he is a ntural first baseman who may have gone for the ball and not the bag.
why didnt we trade ipk and melky to the twins for johan?! we need arms bad.. Can we get washburn now? all the washed up pitchers tend to thrive in Yankees uniforms.. look at Ponson… someone get Hank or hal on the phone or put the real BOSS back in charge (George)..
I’m almost at the end of my rope with Girardi. As Peter is pointing out more and more lately, his decisions seem like sabotage-
not playing Damon, putting off Joba’s return-these are only the latest in a long line of strange choices. I had an uneasy feeling right from the start when he messed around so much with the lineup, but I cut him slack, figuring he was finding his groove.Someone else commented the irony of Torre being gone if the Yankees don’t make it to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, while the Torre-led Dodgers…well, I hope I am wrong.
