A good question gets a quick answer

Peter Abraham
August
11

Kim Jones of the YES Network started to ask Joe Girardi a question about his sitting Johnny Damon. It was the one question that had to be asked. But before she could finish, he cut her off.

“Justin Christian has had a lot of success off of left-handers for us and has played very well,” he said. “That is why Justin Christian played.”

Christian was hitting a sparkling .391 against lefties before the game – in 23 at-bats.

Kim then asked Girardi whether he thought the team looked flat.

“No, I didn’t think so,” he said.

The Yankees had one hit over the last seven innings and the game lasted two hours and 14 minutes. It was the shortest game of the season. They advanced only two runners to third base, none after the second inning. This against a pitcher they had beaten twice.

In other news, the Yankees will start Darrell Rasner on Wednesday.

  1. S.A.-I want to believe in this team, but they make it hard to do so. This offense is still offensive.

“Justin Christian has had a lot of success off of left-handers for us and has played very well,” he said. “That is why Justin Christian played.”

    Whatever.

  2. DominicanYank

So…why didn’t he start for Melky instead of Damon…?

  3. El Guapo

Wow, I am speechless. Girardi is overmanaging based purely on numbers. Welcome to the new Stump Merrill era. He is a moron

  4. E-Man

And you didn’t press him Pete? Why not?

  5. max

    …because its melkys birthday duh!

    just kidding.

  6. Tom

Somebody just didn’t have his wheaties this morning. Yeah, Joe Torre was too soft for this team and they needed a guy like Girardi to light a fire under these guys. Oops. Justin Christian over Damon. Wow, I guess jeffrey loria was on to something.

  7. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    ugh….rasner ?

  8. E-Man

“So…why didn’t he start for Melky instead of Damon…?”

See that’s a good question.. Cmon Pete, challenge. Pull a Sherman and ask the same thing 20 times.

  9. JK

I’m sure Damon would have made a huge difference tonight, because this team has been pounding lefties all year and their offense has been ultra consistent with Damon in the lineup over the past 2 weeks.

  10. AZ four

Not to be too over-dramatic, but this decision could cost Girardi his job. Even Kay, the biggest Girardi fan absolutely destroyed him in the postgame.

Cash, Hank, and Hal cannot be happy watching this game tonight. If we don’t get our heads out of our **** and go on a run, but rather continue to fade to our inevitable 83-84 win plateau, then the organization might look back on this game and fire Girardi because of it.

  11. dontfirecash

Kim then asked Girardi whether he thought the team looked flat.

“No, I didn’t think so,” he said.

In other news, Joe Girardi is blind.

  12. Bronx Jeers

When his answers are as curt as that it seems that he is even second guessing himself.

I don’t know about Joe sometimes.

  13. Jacques

    postgame Q&A sessions… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

wake me when we have better pitching & a younger lineup

  14. Don Vito A. Bellamo

so all we have to do is win 15 of our next 17 games and we will be 78-58, 20 games over .500 with a full head of steam headed into September…..IT ALL STARTS TOMORROW…..
    .
    15-2
    .
    ( becomes ONLY 14-2 soon )
    .
GO YANKEES ( pass me another bottle of MadDog….) :-0

  15. Al from BK( This team is so bad that I actually care about NFL training camp)

Girardi is such an excuse giver can he step up and have a Jim Leyland/Lou Piniella meltdown already a game like this certainly warrants that.

  16. george

did Girardi give any explanation of why he thought they didn’t look flat? Or is “No, I didn’t think so” literally the entire answer?

  17. El Guapo

I was never a Girardi fan, but at least gave him the benefit of the doubt during the first half of the season. I am now convinced he is unfit to manage the Yankees, he must go at the end of the season.

  18. Bob(The Original)

So, knowing how the Yanks organization has worked in the past, you all think all this questioning Girardi by the YES Heads is coming from Tampa?

Not saying it is, but does make me wonder.

  19. Mark (Brett back to SWB)

Is this why the 2 Marlins beat writers hated Girardi? Hurry up Joe you better go do another interview with Mike and the Dog. Don’t forget to go tape the Joe Girardi Show.

  20. Tank

And Sabathia is going to help this offense how?

Get us to the playoffs so the middle of the order can go 1-12 with 6 Ks and 10 LOB while Sabathia loses a game 2-1 to Mark Burhlee?

  21. dontfirecash

This team is in need of a Scott Proctor style bonfire before tommorow’s game. Burn everything!

  22. Al from BK( This team is so bad that I actually care about NFL training camp)

I would prefer a Mets like collapse to this lifeless surrender. Seriously these Yankees are crapping on the legacy of the franchise by giving up with 40+ left.

  23. Don Pratt

In other news Doug Mientkiewicz is batting .293 for the Pirates in limited duty this year. He makes about a buck and a half mil. With all the defensive problems the Yanks have had at 1B this year would it have killed them to keep him on? I guarantee you he would have not only smothered that Figgins grounder yesterday but probably would have gotten an out at 2nd.

  24. EQ10

I was a big proponent of the Yankees bringing in Joe Girardi…I thought his fire and enthusiasm would rub off on this team. I have to say, I was dead wrong. He has not done much to impress, except for his management of the bullpen. Plus, he is stubborn to a fault, and can be a jerk to the press at times. I’ve seen enough to be honest…

  25. Al from BK( This team is so bad that I actually care about NFL training camp)

Get Donnie baseball in here to manage. He should have been the guy to begin with.

  26. Someone Else

“I was a big proponent of the Yankees bringing in Joe Girardi…I thought his fire and enthusiasm would rub off on this team. I have to say, I was dead wrong. He has not done much to impress, except for his management of the bullpen. Plus, he is stubborn to a fault, and can be a jerk to the press at times. I’ve seen enough to be honest…”

You’re going to see a few more years of it. Get used to it.

    Or keep whining, whatever.

  27. Bob(The Original)

I would prefer a Mets like collapse to this lifeless surrender.

It would not surprise me one bit if this turns into an 8-10 game losing streak.

The team has basically given up and Girardi has clearly lost his mind. That Damon move should really have red flags popping up all over the front office.

  28. PAT M

If things do not improve in the next few weeks, I can see Ownership deciding to make sweeping changes in the FO as well as in the dugout….Someone is going to be held responsible for not making the Postseason if that is indeed what happens…..I ticking timebomb has begun down in Tampa…..

  29. dontfirecash

I guess Joe went to the Ian Kennedy school of making an a** of yourself at a press conference.

  30. RSM

Sitting Damon was a mistake. But let’s be real folks, could Damon have really won the game single handedly? Once again, the offense did NOTHING!

  31. I'MinPAIN

Great… And now his avg against lefties just dropped 60 points!

That’s the problem with placing such weight on such small sample sizes. I would like to think the manager of the New York Yankees would know that.

I also find it interesting that Girardi didn’t mention this “reason” BEFORE the game when he was questioned… It’s like he was looking for an excuse for his crap decision.

And in making this decision, he also risks icing his hottest hitter… It will be interesting to see how this “rest” treats Damon who has been hitting every day for a while now.

It was a stupid decision when Girardi made it, and it’s a stupid decision now.

  32. EQ10

I agree that he is going to be here for at least a few years. I just think he really has done nothing to distinguish himself. I understand its on the players, and this is a team of overpaid underachievers. I just think Girardi makes some weird decisions. Obviously, his playing of Christian and Melky tonite, pinch hitting Melky and pinch running Pudge last week, playing Betemit all the time, etc. The manager is supposed to do things to make the team better. I dont think that has happened with Girardi. I understand they have had many injuries, but so have other teams. That excuse sucks when you have a 200 million + payroll, IMO.

  33. I'MinPAIN

By the way, did you guys here about this “sense of urgency” the Yankees have?

Oh ya! Girardi says it every day… “ALL these games are important!” and “We have to start winning games NOW!”

Obviously, Girardi recognizes that the Yankees are in a desperate situation…

That must be why Darrell Rasner is starting on Wednesday. :-(

  34. Bob(The Original)

Sitting Damon was a mistake. But let’s be real folks, could Damon have really won the game single handedly? Once again, the offense did NOTHING!

    You never know.

But one thing a manager should know is that when you are trying to break a potential season ending losing streak, you do not rest you most consistent hitter for some unproven weak hitting minor leaguer.

Just a horrible horrible call by Girardi. He deserves to be called out for it and deserves whatever heat it brings on him. There was absolutely no justification for that. You needed your best possible team out there today more than any other day this season and he didn’t do it.

    Unexcusable in my mind.

  35. RSM

It’s funny, all the whining that we should have traded for Santana, and we have to sign CC. Am I missing something? You can not win a game without scoring any runs.

  36. CJ

Is Girardi lacking in mental capacity?

  37. 34hughes

    Girardi has to be fired!

  38. John H.

I hope Hank goes OFF tomorrow.

  39. Bob(The Original)

As big a mess as our rotation has been this year, if the bats had done even a little bit closer to what they should have and we got the exact same pitching performances we would at the very least be ahead of Boston right now. The failure of this season rest solely on the bats.

  40. BYE BYE GIRARDI!!!

“Kim then asked Girardi whether he thought the team looked flat.

“No, I didn’t think so,” he said.”

BUAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAA – What a complete IDIOT!

Girardi just lost his head and a season… GTFOH Joe!

  41. back bench

“You’re going to see a few more years of it. Get used to it.”

Don’t be so sure. Hank and Hal are not going to put up with Giradi’s lengthy string of obviuosly poor decisions, especially when other options (Matingly, Randolf, etc) are immediately available.

There was a big question before the season as to whether or not Giradi could get the veterans to respect and play for him. Judging by Damon’s expressions in the dugout tonight, I think we have our answer.

  42. E-Man

“Sitting Damon was a mistake. But let’s be real folks, could Damon have really won the game single handedly? Once again, the offense did NOTHING!”

    The past 7 days, Damon has a .406 ba and a .441obp.

He may have not single handedly won the game but he could have contributed towards a win by getting on base.

But we’ll never know now because Girardi is clueless.

  43. Tank

Donnie Baseball would be even more of a disaster than Girardi. So would Willie.

You want to make a manager change? Go for a Showalter/Bowa type. A guy with experience and hard-nosed.

  44. S.A.-I want to believe in this team, but they make it hard to do so. This offense is still offensive.

    Hank has been surprisingly quiet..

  45. I'MinPAIN

By the way, I haven’t heard anybody mention that Damon has already missed 16 games BEFORE tonight, mainly due to injuries and time on the DL!

How much “rest” does your best hitter need?

  46. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

I posted this in the other thread so I’ll post it here too

For the commanding price that Boras is going to command for Tex and Manny I’d rather not even attempt it. Again maybe it’s because I watched the Braves closely this season, but if you think Alex is not clutch wait till you see Teixiera for a full season, maybe it’s because Manny would not answer what everybody thinks needs tobe answered.

I go on record saying I’d rather get stronger pitching (Sabathia) and work on the defense while we’re at it. For a team that still has Matsui, still has Nady, still has Damon, you will still have Georgy…How many more offensives studs do we need to mask what our current players aren’t doing ?

An embarrassment of riches on that field, literally this team was ran like a Fantasy League Team instead of a legit baseball operation. Give one of these batters to a struggling team in the AL or NL and they would feel blessed, but here on the Yankees you have to be an allstar 30-40 HRS to hit the field..forget OBP % , forget defense, forget speed or consistancy or 5 tools or hitting w/ RISP or situational hitting, NO YOU HAVE TO BE A SUPERSTAR HALL OF FAMER !!!! YOU THINK THE TWINS WOULDN’T LOVE A NADY, A DAMON, AN AROD.

To think we loss to a team who’s best slugger is Justin Morneau. That’s it. A collection of Jeter, Arod, Abreu, Nady, Sexson, Cano..etc. couldn’t outhit 1 slugger from the opposing team. Just embarrassing.

IT HAS NEVER WORKED THIS WAY WHEN DOES IT END !!! WHEN DO WE STOP THINKING GET THE SLUGGER, GET THE HIGH % SLUGGER, YEH KILLER LINE UP w/ A SOFT MENTALITY.

  47. Adam 86

It’s nice to see Melky in the lineup every day with his great BA and OBP and then have AL-leading Johnny Damon sitting because he has “played a lot.” MELKY HAS PLAYED MORE THAN HIM!!!

It’s going to be hard to accept if this downward spiral continues because I live and go to school in New Englad and have to listen to all of the moronic Red Sox fans on a daily basis, including two that I live with.

I was happy when we hired Girardi and I thought he would light fire under this team. I guess I was wrong :(

  48. 34hughes

hey your right randolph available i wouldnt be suprise he could replace girardi if that happened also because El Capitan has a lot of respect for him

  49. VOIII

“I was a Yankee fan when Yogi Berra was their manager – the first time.

There is a reason Buck is still an ESPN color guy, he can’t manage a storm drain.

Buck Showalter couldn’t make a pimple on Joe Girardi’s ass, or Joe Torre’s for that matter.”

    Pepitone,
Apparently you were smoking some good weed in the 60s…like your idol

Buck’s Career winning percentage with 3 different teams = .514
    Girardi’s = .504

MOY in 94 and 2004…Yeah he can’t manage allright ;)

  50. #9

“Welcome to the new Stump Merrill era.”

Incorrect – during the Stump era we were at the very bottom – this team has a way to go to get to that point.

It’s gonna get worse before it gets better folks – you have to accept and deal with it… this organization is building for the future.

Long term – I’m hopeful – but this year is growing pains. Look at Tampa Bay… look at Angels… home grown and nurtured talent is the way to build a team…

We’ll get there – but it ain’t happening as soon as we want.

  51. Nick in SF

Kim then asked Girardi whether he thought the team looked flat.

“No, I didn’t think so,” he said.

    Ian Kennedy would probably agree.

  52. RSM

“And in making this decision, he also risks icing his hottest hitter… It will be interesting to see how this “rest” treats Damon who has been hitting every day for a while now”

Girardi’s been doing that all season. Every time a guy’s bat gets hot, he rests him. It’s almost like he doesn’t want them to hit. Torre was all “feel” and didn’t follow stats too much. Girardi is the extreme opposite to a fault.
When a guy gets hot, you let him play, regardless of the matchup. When he looks tired and his bat gets cold, THEN you rest him. Baseball players are very streaky by nature. Anyone who ever even played little league knows that. You never mess with a player when he’s hot.

  53. back bench

“You want to make a manager change? Go for a Showalter/Bowa type. A guy with experience and hard-nosed.”

I don’t know enough about them to advocate one over the other. But you’re right, these are two more options the ownership has. Girardi is almost forcing them to act.

The final season at Yankee Stadium and we have a manager who operates from “Cliff Notes.”

  54. pat

Didn’t see the game tonight. Despite skimming through the game thread comments, I’m watching the replay.

Michael Kay has mentioned lack of clutch hitting 8 times in 22 minutes so far. Does Mr. Obvious think YES viewers might have somehow missed this trend all year?

  55. Pepitone

“Get Donnie baseball in here to manage. He should have been the guy to begin with.”

Oh, yeah, Donnie baseball, the guy with all that managerial success, he’s just the guy who could lead us to the promised land.

Look folks, IMO Joe Girardi, with all the injuries, personnel changes, and distractions this season, has done a terrific job. No one could have done better, and most would have done worse. I lived through the Johnny Keane and Stump Merrill eras, so I know the kind of damage real bad managers can do. Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman are not the problem. Oh, and yes, Girardi has made bad decisions this year on occasion (tonight being one of them), but when you find that perfect manager that never makes a bad decision, you let me know.

The problem is aging, and overpriced, veterans. Stop the talk about signing CC Sabathia or Mark Texeria! That’s all we need is another 10 year, 200 million dollar contract to go with all the rest. That kind of nonsense is what got us into this jam to begin with.

Bring up the kids and let’s see what we got for next year – after we are realistically out of the playoff race. Let’s stick with the plan and see what kind of moves and trades Cash does in the offseason. If things are basically the same next year, then I will join with the rest of you in calling for their heads.

  56. jay destro

man some of you guys really should be managers you make such thought provoking suggestions.

  58. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Pepitone I’ve said this for sometime, w/ the innings limit expected on Hughes and Joba next season, that makes CC Sabathia a must get. (he is a need)

Teixeira (Mr.unclutch part. 2) is going to demand a bankroll, he is a want, we don’t need this. We don’t need this at all. I’d go after a guy like Csey Blake in the offseason a hardworker, a guy that works the count and plays all out D before I think to waste another 20 million to the likes of Mark Teixeira.

  59. T15D23

GET ME SHOWALTER ON THE PHONE!

TIME TO GET THIS TEAM GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

GIRARDI, I’M AMAZED AT HOW BAD YOU ARE AS A MANAGER. ABSOLUTELY STUNNED.

  61. back bench

“IMO Joe Girardi, with all the injuries, personnel changes, and distractions this season, has done a terrific job. No one could have done better

Not necessarily true. When you have all of the injuries and distractions is exactly when you try and settle on a line up and stay with it. You don’t add to the turmoil. Damon came to the game tonight and was amazed he wasn’t in the line up. People on the blog, who despite their disagreements seem to know a fair amount more about the game than many other team blogs, were surmising that Damon had to be hurt for Girardi to make such a decision. That’s how indefensible it was.

  62. CaptainsCorner

Christian must be soo excited that he got the Babe Ruth treatment today. 20 or so at bats and he plays over the veteran and for some unknown reason bats lead off. Sitting 1 of Giambi or Damon maybe I can understand but sitting both of them is inexcusable. Especially since there fill ins are garbage and they already don’t have Posada and Matsui in the lineup. If Girardi thought that Damon was tired then he should of DHed him and played Nady in LF. There was absolutely no excuse for Damon to not pinch hit for Christian in the 8th inning and then just watch Melky and Christian slap at pitches off the plate. Damon’s face in the dug out showed everyone what they needed to know on how he felt about not playing.

  63. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

    Teixeria > “the kids”

Please he’s the most overrated UNCLUTCH 1B in all of baseball.

  64. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Pepitone, its not like Girardi has all that much experience managing, and he is doing a terrible job. His moves, line up changes, resting hot hitters, no bunting, bunting at the wrong time with the wrong guy, pitching changes, and so on, have cost at least 11 games now. Figure if the Yankees won even half those games, say 5, where would they be in the standing right now?

Girardi isn’t a good manager. He is losing the whole team. His coaching staff isn’t doing their job.

A real leader gets those who follow to do play to their potential. A poor leader accepts defeat and “tips their hats” to the other team.

Girardi stinks as a manager. He should be fired. Maybe that will give the Yankees a boost they need. They certainly aren’t getting anywhere with Girardi.

Hey guys cheer up…Carl Pavano makes his final tune up at Trenton tomorrow. He’ll join the team next week and win 8 games to earn a 5 yr/$100m contract.

At lest they didn’t prolong the agony tonight…I barely got home in time to see the Twins beat the Wilkes Barre Yankees.

  67. RSM

We can rant all night, but it’s of no use. Watching this team has been frustrating all season, but there was still hope. Unfortunately, tonight’s completely lacluster performance on the heels of an Angels sweep just confirms what most have been suspecting for weeks.
    Nail, meet coffin.

  68. YankeesTech

This is when the dumb fans come out in droves. You guys should be blaming the players and injuries to our lost season and not the manager.

you guys are so stupid and naive, yeah he will tell you that they gave up tonight.. ANd that will accomplish what????

  71. Pepitone

“Apparently you were smoking some good weed in the 60s…like your idol”

“Buck’s Career winning percentage with 3 different teams = .514
Girardi’s = .504″ Wowww, that’s going to win a whole lot of World Series.

“MOY in 94 and 2004…Yeah he can’t manage allright ” Just for the record, Girardi was Manager of the Year in 2006. Oh, and how many teams are banging down Ole’ Bucks door to sign him, huh?

Stop with all the Buck Showalter cheerleading, it’s making you look like a fool.

  72. BeatUpJG

I’m not sure why people still think we have a shot at the dance in October…it’s an extremely simple situation. The Yankees are 7 games over .500. Take away the 8 game winning streak last month (the only one all year because the 7 game one in June was against 2 of the worst teams in the terrible NL) and….GUESS WHAT….WE’RE BELOW .500 THINKERS!!! Do .500 teams make the playoffs in the AL? If you said “No”, YOU’RE TODAY’S LUCKY WINNER!!! Dingdingdingdingding!!!

  73. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

brandon. Get bent. He is a power switch 1b who plays great defense.

And a waste of money going soon into his decline years, there was a point Chipper Jones in Atlanta and Bobby Cox grew tired of him, he never came through in a big spot for Atlanta in 07, he won a couple of game in 08′, he’s an overrated player for the money he will demand. We don’t need that.

  77. Tank

Brandon— how do you advocate fixing the offense? Clearly, it is a huge problem.

Hank even said last month that Cashman warned him that he is more worried about the offense than the pitching.

The offense is going to be even weaker next year with no Abreu/Matsui. Posada a year older and might have lost most of his power due to surgery. Matsui hasn’t been healthy in 3 years. Jeter is in decline. Who knows about Cano.

The offense now is merely living off its reputation. Numbers on the baseball card— not what they are actually producing this year. Sure, when you line up Damon-Jeter-Abreu-Arod-Giambi-Posada-Nady-Cano-Matsui-, it looks good, but we all know that most of those guys are not what they once were.

If not Tex, there has to be another way to fix the offense.

  78. Dewey

Im afraid tonight confirmed the fate of our season, guys. This team just does not have it this year. Hope you all have tickets for Sept 21st!

  82. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

You can already see people are swaying to the get me another superstar side.

    So…

    Jorge Posada
    Jason Giambi
    Johnny Damon
    Alex Rodriguez
    Xavier Nady
    Hideki Matsui

should I continue.. How many more superstars you want to see fail because this method clearly hasn’t worked for years now.

  83. YankeesTech

The rotation will probably be stronger next year as we acquire CC and Wang and Joba was back in the rotation. These might offset some of the shortcomings from the offense. Mastui will be back and posada….. So it’s a little premature to say that our offense will be worst next year.

  84. YankeeJosh

Brandon, Teixeira is 28 years old. He’s hardly headed in to decline years.

If you want to argue about his personality, I can’t dispute that. But Teixeira is in his prime now.

  85. Pepitone

“Pepitone I’ve said this for sometime, w/ the innings limit expected on Hughes and Joba next season, that makes CC Sabathia a must get. (he is a need)”

Brandon, you make an excellent point, and I really have no counter. My concern is the money he will be asking for, and the length of the contract. Other than that, you’re right.

Stuart, stop making sense! You know it’s all Girardi’s fault. Why, if we only had Buck Showalter, we would be leading the division right now. (sarc off) :)

  86. Anonomouys

    Joe is an idiot!!!

  87. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

My prayers go to Dave Miley and his family that is truely a tragic event :(

  88. Marc

    BeatUpJG

Good thing all the games count.

  89. Tidrow

Girardi isn’t the problem by a long shot. It’s the team fellas. It’s an aging team of overpriced declining veterans. Girardi is a younger manager who needs younger, more energetic players to complement his style which is to use the whole roster and give everybody a chance to play.Casman needs to supply Girardi with players who are versatile and multi dimensional. Guys he can mix and match. I for one like Girardis’ style of managing and once he gets the right parts in here you nay sayers will start to appreciate what this manager is all about. Stop holding on to the past. Out with the old in with the new!!!!

  90. Barry Lane

How about some attention for Sidney Ponson, who has been pretty good…actually, better than that.

  91. YankeeJosh

    Jorge Posada
    Jason Giambi
    Johnny Damon
    Alex Rodriguez
    Xavier Nady
    Hideki Matsui

Brandon, there’s only one superstar on the list and that’s A-Rod.

Giambi was in the past but isn’t now. The others are varying degrees of good ballplayers. teixeira is not a superstar. He is a very good ballplayer.. Just what the Yankees need imo.

  92. Nick in SF

Brandon, you’re including Xavier Nady on your list of failed superstars? Huh?

  93. YankeesTech

Hopefully this lost season cleanses the fan base of all those arrogant spoiled yankee fans we love to hate because they misrepresent us.

  94. Someone Else

Fans want Girardi to whine and moan and call his team a bunch of lazy, overpaid, losers.

It ain’t gonna happen. Get used to it.

    Or, keep whining.

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

  95. stuart

nick in Sf I have come to grips with us not making the playoffs.. WHy is it our right to make the playoffs every year. actually knowing it is over makes it easier to watch the car wreck.

Like Girardi is suppose to tell the fans what he really thinks about there 250 BA with RISP, or Giambi’s assorted issues..

Or Irod not being able to catch up with any fastball, BTW the yanks almost all of them cannot hit a decent fast ball..

They never pull a fast ball ever..

ANd then we have these dweebs talking about Tex, or the missed Santana trade, like more overpriced crap will make this wreck any different after all timmy is winning his fantasy league and he just picked up Paul Byrd!!!

  96. Jorge Tabata

Bring up Jackson, Melancon, and Miranda.

  97. Someone Else

“Hopefully this lost season cleanses the fan base of all those arrogant spoiled yankee fans we love to hate because they misrepresent us.”

Agreed. ‘Unfortunately’, it’d probably take 3-5 years to get rid of ‘em – I don’t want to sign up for that!

  98. bye bye postseason

this team is done.no joe torre no playoff.

  99. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Brandon, Teixeira is 28 years old. He’s hardly headed in to decline years.

If you want to argue about his personality, I can’t dispute that. But Teixeira is in his prime now.

And a player we don’t need. Seriously IDK why we need a guy like this w/ the players on our roster. When are we going to stop building this team like an All Star bubble gum team and actually build it like a baseball team. Again Tex is not a need look at the players under contract for 09′ why is Tex a need ? Why ? What does he accomplish for this team ? Just look at how the Angels built thier team why are we moving away from what got us there. Why ?

  100. Someone Else

“Bring up Jackson, Melancon, and Miranda.”

    LOL!

Might as well say “Bring up Montero”, Jackson ain’t ready.

  101. Pepitone

I have three sons, the youngest is 15, and the middle is 18. There are few things that hurt more than losing a child. I cannot begin to imagine the grief that family is going through.

Yes, I will be praying for them.

  102. YankeesTech

Yeah, I am not in love with the texiera talk and don’t forget that we will be dealing with the devil to get him…. Getting CC here is a top priority…Dump Giambi and Abreu….

  103. S.A.-I want to believe in this team, but they make it hard to do so. This offense is still offensive.

Toronto is slowly gaining on us. Seriously, we might be saying hello to 4th place soon if they don’t start winning some games on a consistent basis
    This month/season has sucked!

  104. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Brandon, you’re including Xavier Nady on your list of failed superstars? Huh?

Nick I’m making a point here. You see it’s an embarrassment of riches that should be able to produce on thier own, usually when you don’t your not needed. X has been a change to this philosophy, still in his prime cheap not big money, but a potential all star player. Think of the Lakers saying oh you know what we need Dwight Howard and Lebron James go get them. That’s what this is resulting to. Instead of getting needs everyone is focused on wants.

  105. YankeeJosh

    Brandon,

    We’ll agree to disagree.

Last thing- The dynasty Yankees had solid switch hitters in the line-up. There are none on this team now. We don’t know how Posada will respond next year. Matsui’s health is also in question. IMO Tex fits a need perfectly. You disagree. That’s fine. We’ll just have to see how this plays out.

BTW, I think in the end the Yankees won’t get Teixeira, although I hope they do.

  106. VOIII

    Pep,
I am not quite as old as you are. But I have been watching this team long enough to know that Billy Martin was a drunken fool. However, when it came to in-game decisions there was never anyone better. He could turn a 500 team into a champion in 1 year. And yes he did make a mistake once in a while in the dug-out, very rare, but none the less they happened. I don’t expect any manager to be a flawless tactician, God knows Torre certainly wasn’t…But I have yet to see anything from Girardi that shows me he is even above average as a Manager.
This team is lost at sea with no captain, Mutiny is almost certain if they keep playing like this.

  107. Yazman (David)

Did you look at Teixeira’s situational stats over the last 3,000+ at bats?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/pl.....pe=Batting

    .276 bases empty (.849 OPS)
    .297 runners on (.973 OPS)
    .323 RISP (1.067 OPS)
    .355 bases loaded (1.016 OPS)
.389 man on 3rd less than 2 outs (1.052 OPS)

  108. Pepitone

“ANd then we have these dweebs talking about Tex, or the missed Santana trade, like more overpriced crap will make this wreck any different after all timmy is winning his fantasy league and he just picked up Paul Byrd!!!”

Stuart, you da man! But you owe me for a new keyboard and monitor. The soda I was drinking went bye bye.

  109. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Tell me in 09′ when the offense goes into a struggle and the talk will be

well they have 200 million dollar payroll I mean between Arod and Tex they are 2 baseball teams payroll combined and they just aren’t getting it done. Then what ? do we go get Pujols or Berkman, soon it’s going to be go get Chase Utley or get Ichiro. It needs to stop.

  110. SDYankee

    Stuart, Brandon, etc…

I agree with you that the season is not on Joe…he’s not batting .250 with RISP and he wan’t in the field watching Figgons gound ball yesterday. It is an aging team on the decline that cannot catch up to fastballs AND they had a lot of injuries to key players this year

BUT…you gotta believe a veteran who is leading the league in hitting AND is a gamer like Damon does not enjoy showing up at the stadium to learn from the press he is not playing. His comments and his look in the dugout didn’t hide his disgust…and it makes you wonder if Girardi has lost this team and some of the lackluster play we have seen

  111. CanIGetAMooseCall

    “ugh….rasner ?”

Even worse, Rasner is the team’s No. 4 starter.

  112. RSM

You know, all this Teixeira talk reminds me a lot of 2001. Just substitute ‘Giambi’ for ‘Teixeira’. How did that work out?

I agree with making a play for CC. Joba and Hughes won’t be fully ready until 2010, and that’s barring any further setbacks. Spending on a guy like CC is a worthy risk.
But going after expensive, long term contracts for position players is exactly what got us in the predicament we are in now. When will you guys ever learn. We need to sign scrappy team players that play hard, not more primadonnas. There were no superstars on the 96-00 teams.
SJ may have the best idea, trade Cano in the offseason. He is the only player that has serious trade value. He could net us 2 or 3 decent young position players in return. After this season, would you really miss him?

  113. Pepitone

Well, VOIII, we will have to leave it there. I don’t agree with your argument, and nothing I can say will change your mind.

Appreciate the more respectful post this time. :)

  114. YankeesTech

What saddens me is that this team will sucker me into watching them once again if they win 2 out of 3.

    CF Ichiro

    C Posada
    DH Bonds
    RF Nady
    2B Utley

THERE’S YOUR 2009 INTO THE FUTURE DYNASTY COURTESY OF YAHOO SPORTS FANTASY LEAGUE TEAM EDITOR !!!

THAT LINEUP WINS RINGS WORLD SERIES BABY YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH

  116. CanIGetAMooseCall

“It’s gonna get worse before it gets better folks”

Why? The Yanks have tons of money coming off the books after this year. They can re-stock at key positions while holding on to all prospects. Yanks should be able to turn it around pretty quickly.

  117. stuart

fantasy geeks I will tell you how the Yanks can win next year and continue to get younger and fiscally somewhat sane.

add CC(He is a stopper) then they have joba, wang, hughes, and either pettitte or Moose. I prefer Pettitte..

the rotation is set.. the pen is fine, they will have all there present pitchers except do not resign Bruney and add any combo of young stud arms in the minors such as Melanco(super stud), coke, whelan, sanchez, etc.. Plenty of premium plus arms..

Giambi, abreu are so gone they are in Tahiti.. IF you can make a sensible trade to get rid of Cano look into it.. His lack of discipline at the plate is not the yankee way. If you get Kemp for cano put Kemp in Center , nady in right ,and Damon in LF..Matsui is the DH or if he can be traded do it. Put a fast, contact hitter at 2B there are many of them, and if you cannot get Tex for 7 yrs or less at no more then $15 Mill.(will probably never happen) let him pass. Trade some surplus arms starters or pen for a middle of the road good defensive contact hitting 1B.

that team can win the world series. they have eliminated giambi and abreu and cano and get back jorge and molina can share the catching position, Matsui to be a full time DH, Nady is a competent outfielder, and if they get kemp in CF they have solved that issue.

The offense would be pretty good and the pitching would be GREAT. Really spend time and money on the bench because the bench will play. Christian 5th OF and pinch runner. Betemit makes $1.5 or so so he is gone unless he takes a $600k pay cut and that sack of you know what is the 3b, SS, and 2b backup. Molina is the backup catcher, and then you get a 4th OF and another 1b..

that is it… this is the outline for a very good team. sabathi with Joba developing and Wang bachk healthy and Phi developing they will be very good. Melky porbably goes but Gardner does not go. AJax continues to do his thing when he is reayd call him up. after 2009 they are done with damon and Matsui and have to continue to get more athletic..

You guys might not realize it but the Yanks have a decent foundation for going forward and alot of bad contracts and bad players coming off the books and roster.

giambi will get a 1 yr deal next yr. somewhere for $4 mill to DH and continue his slied as will abreu..

the mega studs the monteros, betances, brackman, jackson, angellini’s and other premium potential players will develop as they develop..

  118. VOIII

““Apparently you were smoking some good weed in the 60s…like your idol”

Anyway…still don’t get your hate for Shaowalter…he really turned things around after the Stump Merril experiment…Did a good job of setting the table for Torre and then Brenly…

  119. tim boat

Who cares? the season was over after the the Angels took the first two games of that series last week. now they’re just playing out the string. even if they did somehow win the wild card they just get to lose to the Angels in the first round anyway.

it’s disgraceful that this $200 million team is going to finish behind Tampa.

  120. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

  121. Al from BK( This team is so bad that I actually care about NFL training camp)

“What saddens me is that this team will sucker me into watching them once again if they win 2 out of 3.”

Not I. I am off the Yanks for at least August I’ll follow games on gamecast but I wont catch the YES broadcast.

  122. hurthrow

Jason Bay is a very good player. That trade is only a slight downgrade from Manny for the rest of this season, and it is probably going to help them in 2009 and beyond.

And if Manny wasn’t going to play his hardest for Boston, then the trade helps them for 2008 as well.

  123. Dave D

You saw what Beckett did tonight? His team had a huge game and he came through with 8 innings of 1 run ball with 8 Ks to carry his team to victory.

Sabathia will do the same for us.

  124. Nick in SF

Nice, Brandon, I like Bonds in your lineup. He isn’t retired!

Oh by the way, I’m all in on tomorrow night’s game. If we lose Moose’s start, that’s it. Must win. For our collective psyches.

  125. Al from BK( This team is so bad that I actually care about NFL training camp)

  127. YankeeVIP

its a shame this team is such a disgrace. plain and simple

at some point, girardi has to take some of the blame for not getting his players ready to play and wanting to play.

i was a big fan of the move to bring girardi over donnie baseball.. that being seing, i also thought pena would have been the better choice.

  128. RalphieD

Man so what don’t you know 09′ Hank is gonna clean house

    Ichiro
    Manny
    Texiera or Pujols

    That will RINNNNNNNNNGS, RINNNNNNNGS …

(I’m doing that show how some posters in thier mind or ESPN guys like a Max Kellerman want to build a baseball team) rather than ask how an Angels team does it w/ a 90 million payroll, or how Florida does it w/ an under 30 million or bordering 30 million dollar payroll or how Minny does it w/ nearly nothing, I mean they paid more for thier stadium lease than that team. Everybody wants the allstar for year 1 w/ only year 1 in mind instead of the longterm thoughts.

This Yankees team is nowhere near needing a final piece. The need in the offseason is CC Sabathia that’s all for now people talking thierselves into needing Tex really aren’t thinking clearly.

  131. stuart

I would hold off on the jason bay victory parade yet.

he could not hold mannys cup and I know manny sis a total jerk .see how big papi is doing in about 6 weeks and then annoint the bay trade a good one.

Boston has there problems also. 1 of the reasons I am pissed about the Yanks is this year there are no great teams, this angel team is a well balanced team but a weak copy of the great yankee teams of the late 90’s. there pitching is not as good in the pen and starters and there lineup has some big holes such as catcher and SS but they are a complete team. the angels only problem is a complete teams wins in the regular season but power teams(arms) win in the playoffs and they have good pitchers but not really power arms…

  132. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

  135. Pepitone

    VOIII -

My apologies too, I said some very immature things myself about you. I guess I let the Yankee losses get to me a little too much.

Anyway, see my post above. I guess we will just have to disagree on this one.

  136. mark

brandon – you don’t like coach pringles or the italian stalion?

  137. Guiseppe Franco

And Sabathia is going to help this offense how?

Actually, signing Sabathia will help the offense quite a bit.

The reason why is because a rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Joba, Pettitte, and Hughes makes some of the young arms on the farm expendable and trade chips to address the offense.

And I would also trade Cano for Matt Kemp tomorrow if I could. I would have liked to see them sign Orlando Hudson to replace Cano, but he’s now injured and Mark Ellis is a guy I’d very much consider.

Ellis is not a big bat, but he is an outstanding glove and a guy who comes to play every day. He’s not a guy with huge talent who will probably never hit his ceiling because he lacks focus and drive on a day-to-day basis. He’s also a great fundamental ballplayer – which we all know Cano is not.

The addition of Kemp gives you an outfield of Damon, Kemp, and Bay in 2009 and would then leave an opening for Jackson in 2010.

Think of it this way, in 2010, the Yanks could have two 5-tool players 25yrs of age and younger patrolling 2/3 of their outfield and will remain that way for the next 5-7 years.

Both Kemp and Jackson have huge upsides – much bigger than Cano. And I would trade Cano tomorrow to land a guy like Kemp.

The Yanks are guaranteed to have three everyday players in their lineup at 35 and up (A-Rod, Jeter, and Posada). They need to balance the rest of the lineup with grinders, youth, and players closer to their 30th birthday.

To not do so would be moronic considering age is one of the biggest problems this team faces right now.

  138. SDYankee

    Stuart–

has my vote…how about Orlando Hudson for 2nd base.
Move Posada to 1st base…it will need to be done at some time in the next 2-3 years
Bring in a defensive catcher to work with Molina…Barajas or Olivo
Keep Melky as a 4th/5th OF…the Yanks will need a defensive replacement for Nady late in games.

  139. NongEyeJon

Man, I chose to go away just in time for this Angels series and this series. I am so happy I am not watching this disgrace of a team. Judging from the box score and the statements from some of you, its hard to believe that Girardi didn’t think his team was flat.

  140. JM

Just curious why folks say Teixeira isn’t clutch.

  143. Lou in Socal

Girardi’s statements are just as bad as IPK’s. We should send Girardi down to Scranton too. Girardi needs to go. Fire him HANK!

  144. stuart

I actualy think the yanks are in a better position for next year to be succesful except for tampa and I think that is about it…

boston has a tons of holes, that catcher position for them looks good next year.. kotteras and cash, good luck fools…
there pen is flammable… they have alot of age also…

baltimore is years away. toronto is years away, and the beat goes on.. the angels have some big decisons and arredondo is not k rod yet and vlad has not found the fountain of youth and torri hunter is no teenager also.

all the teams have problems if the yanks big prospect; joba and hughes develop they will be in great shape.. hughes last 6 or so starts this year at the MLB level are huge, the only thing stopping Joba from being a future star is health issues…

Wang is a more then competent 2nd or 3rd starter so the front end of the rotation could be loaded and then you add CC and then they are top top notch..

IF Cashman stays on plan the Yanks will be better then ever. ANd the plan is very very few long term deals only for pRemium premium talent under 30 and tread on pitcher long term deals at your peril. Keep all the top talent minor leaguers and let them develop. Overpay for underage latin talent and overpay for high risk and rewArd draft picks that the small market teams are scared of.

If you are not sure if you should sign a big name long term deal DON’T DO IT.. BAD DEALS KILL TEAMS, MISSED DEALS YOU CAN SURVIVE..

  145. Jorge Tabata

lol D’Antoni is going to be a disaster.

That should remind us all… regardless of how bad things get, atleast we’re not the Knicks!

  146. Lassie's

    Typical Yankee fans.

    Throw money at the problem.

    20 mill to Tex!
    20 mill to CC!

The real problem is in player development.

They only got 1 good young player. Maybe 2 if we consider Cano’s terrible season an aberration.

This could be a long time before we are good again.

  147. j

perhaps the yankees should consider signing harden to a one or two year contract and add incentives.

lol D’Antoni is going to be a disaster.

That should remind us all… regardless of how bad things get, atleast we’re not the Knicks!

Oh we’re heading there trust me. The way these spoiled fans are calling for Tex and it’ll soon be Manny too just watch. A Fantasy League slugging team is what fans want..meanwhile that’s what we’ve had since 2001.

Manny Ramirez being Manny again ..team is the field he’s taking an hour to get out of the locker room.

  156. Meester

So lets give CC 20 mill a yr for 7 yrs but lets not give it to Santana and actually win this year.

  157. #9

“Can’t wait to listen to Francessa and Kay tomorrow.”

  158. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

*Manny Ramirez being Manny again ..Dodger team was on the field he’s taking an hour to get out of the locker room because he wanted to change a glove.

  159. Teddy

Note to Stuart: English classes. Make sure you attend next semester.

  160. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Because you have all kinds of stats and facts to back this up right?

    Another great point, Brandon!

Why don’t I direct you o an Atlanta Braves forum and they can tell you personally how frustrating he was.

  161. stuart

I have no idea what is a reasonable deal for Cc but if the yanks truly think he is a mega stud they should pay him what they need to get him..

Jase I am on a role tonight read my psots not bad……

Again if the Yanks sign CC only which I think is the way to go there lst 2 yrs they will ahve singend Latroy hawkins and Cc and that is it..

again if they trade cano and some exess arms etc. they can fill 1b and 2b.. Kemp would solve the outfiled position and they are done…

  162. treato

The Dodgers would be dumb to trade Kemp for Cano. But that bonehead Ned Coletti is their GM, so it could happen I guess.

  163. steve

sexon, marte, nady, and pudge must feel right at home… they go from losing situations to another losing situation here.

  164. Wang IS Taiwan

Torre would always tell the guys they weren’t playing BEFORE posting. What’s Girardi’s problem? Does he really not understand EGO Management 101? Bad move. He does understand he’s managing the Yankees this year and not the Marlins, right?

    UGH.

  165. Henry NY

Is Justin Christian part of the youth movement?? One of these great Yankee prospects?? Bret gardner? Melky C??

Who’s the last good outfielder we developed? Shane Spencer? Juan Rivera?

  166. stuart

I have no idea what is a reasonable deal for Cc is but if the yanks truly think he is a mega stud they should pay him what they need to get him..they are losing about $80 mill this year and even after signing CC there payroll should not be more then $180 mill max next year and maybe even less.

Jase I am on a role tonight read my posts not bad……

Again if the Yanks sign CC only which I think is the way to go there last 2 yrs they will have signed Latroy hawkins and CC and that is it..

again if they trade cano and some exess arms etc. they can fill 1b and 2b.. Kemp would solve the outfield position and they are done…

  167. COL 88

What do you guys think of this rotation next year

    Mussina
    Wang
    Joba
    Ponson
    Hughes

  168. Jase

I like stuart. He is who he is. He’s very consistent.

  169. stuart

henry no CHristian is a 27 yr old who was in the independent league.

the yanks have not developed a good outfielder since Bernie, a long long time..

Ajax is the next one, I hope…

  170. dave

tex has very comparable stats to pre-NYY tino martinez and is the same age tino was when we signed him. was that a bad move of bringing in a ’superstar’? i love the morons who say think the 96-00 yanks were all ‘homegrown’. most rational fans understand that signing tino was a huge reason we had the great run we did a decade ago. adding one player like tex, addresses a need that we have and if you look at the current yanks team, it has plenty of homegrown talent, more so than the sox, actually if you look at the current rosters.

  171. Jase

“Why don’t I direct you o an Atlanta Braves forum and they can tell you personally how frustrating he was.”

Typical, Brandon. Backing up his lame statement not with facts but with a referral to other crackpots on a message board. You showed us all, Brandon, that Tex isn’t clutch.

    How dare we doubt thee?

I guess the Yanks should pass because the Braves forum members say he isn’t clutch.

  172. Henry NY

I was being sarcastic but thank you, Stuart.

Bernie is the last good outfielder we have produced. That is true.

A Jax is 2 years away. You don’t rush great talents like that.

  173. treato

Ponson better not be in next year’s rotation.

  174. j

anyone think we can get loney for kennedy cabrera and say hughes?

  175. Jersey

    Tex isn’t clutch?

So what? He’ll fit right in here.

  176. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Hey Jase you see I’m trying to tell you what I saw on TBS w/ my own eyes in 07 and through MLBTV..the guy never could consistantly come up big in clutch moments, go to an Atlanta Braves forum they will tell you the same. You see sometimes numbers lie, Tex’s numbers lies but if you like Tex fine that’s your perogative (he’s not a need and the difference between Tino and him is that Tino wasn’t a 20 million + ransom on a team) But hey it is what it is.

  177. stuart

yeah ronnie sure you live on 46th street. and you get your jollies with your sux crap..

hey I have an idea go back to chowderland or even a better idea blog on a red sux site and leaves us alone..

  178. Jersey

“anyone think we can get loney for kennedy cabrera and say hughes?”

They wouldn’t trade this package for an ace starter. Why would they trade it for a decent 1b?

    Use your noggin you moron.

  179. j

loney would be a cheaper alternative to tex and plus he isnt abertarion eliglible

  180. Wang IS Taiwan

Here’s a critique of Girardi’s managing by someone who first tells us he likes Joe and it’s STILL negative (for those of you who think Pete is unfair in his criticisms).

    Steven Goldman, The NYSun

    http://www.nysun.com/sports/ya.....son/83689/

“The lineup represents Girardi’s worst quality. An affable and intelligent manager, Girardi can be headstrong in his choices, sticking to his guns in the face of evidence that his tactics aren’t working. This can be seen clearly in his decision to push Damaso Marte into a second inning of work twice in one week, resulting in losses both times. That’s just two games. His wrongheaded embrace of platooning provides a more protracted example of a decision that hasn’t paid off. For all his machinations, the Yankees remain a game under .500 when a left-hander starts against them.

Platooning is a commonsense strategy most of the time, especially when it comes to left-handed hitters — most right-handed batters don’t have the same handicap facing same-side pitchers as their lefty brethren do. Yet, not all lefty hitters are created equal, and the same can be said of lefty pitchers. Failure to understand this has led Girardi to some wrongheaded decisions, such as sitting Jason Giambi, one of the team’s two consistent power threats, against most lefties.”

  181. Jase

So now Brandon you watch every Yankee game but also tape all the Braves games just so you can scout Tex and his clutchness???

    Really?

That’s your story and you’re sticking to it huh?

You post on Braves blogs too???

You don’t have to lie my man. Just say you don’t like Tex. Don’t make up stuff.

  182. curlyshemp

I think Pettitte was the only homegrown starter during the late 90’s.

All the other starters (Wells, Clemens, Cone, Key, El Duque, Irabu, Rogers) came to the Yankees as a free agent signings, as part of a trade, or on a raft from Cuba.

  183. stuart

Henry I cannot see sarcasm thru the computer screen sorry..

I have no idea when Ajax is ready but I hope he turns out to be the stud we hope he is…

I hve not seen any of these supposed stars the Yanks have in the minors but I read all I can and I do beleive they have turned the corner in the minors and even the guys who have not doen great yet such as hughes , robertson, gardner and others I have some hope for them producing.

I may be the minority but I have confidence in Cash if the tampa mafia and owners stay out of his biz..

  184. Jase

    Trade Hughes for James Loney?

Oh man. That’s enough pain and anguish for one night.

Check the LA blogs, Brandon. See if he’s clutch. TIVO their games too.

  185. Wang IS Taiwan

    Continuation of Steven Goldman’s article:

“The Twins’ Glen Perkins is a pitch-to-contact lefty with home run problems. He has had a very difficult time retiring left-handers this year, allowing them to hit .338 in 80 at bats. While you never know which pitcher might have a specific hitter’s number, Perkins isn’t Steve Carlton in his prime. Giambi, and for that matter Damon, would not have been blindly swinging at a dominating slider; they would have been able to put the ball in play. When hitters of their quality make contact, good things generally happen — but the Yankees will never know, because they’re not playing. On a team that can’t call on reliable regulars such as Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui, to have the manager take additional steps to minimize the offense is self-defeating. A platoon only makes sense if the hitters you are playing have a better chance of succeeding than the ones you are benching. With Girardi turning to the likes of Sexson, Cabrera, and Wilson Betemit, his lineups fail that most basic test.”

  186. Bryan

There is simply no such thing as clutch. This is shown time and time again, but people seem to need to cling to it – as if it will make the game more meaningful if there are “clutch” performers and there are “chokers.” It’s simply small sample sizes with reasonable random variations. There is no such thing as clutch. Name one clutch player.

  187. stuart

I live in LA Loney is a good player but that is it.

Again call me delusional I think Hughes will be phenomenal so I am not trading him..

  188. Bryan

There are, of course, clutch situations. But no clutch players.

  189. Wang IS Taiwan

My favorite line in Goldman’s article if that Girardi, “On a team that can’t call on reliable regulars such as Posada and Matsui, to have the manager take additional steps to MINIMIZE THE OFFENSE is self-deating.

Love that. That sums up Girardi’s smug moves to a T.

  190. COL 88

I would trade Kennedy ans Tabata for Loney

  191. Carl D

You build the team with 3-4 core farm system guys. The rest you build thru trade or free agency.

No one has 25 homegrown players. It doesn’t work like that.

We’re ahead of the game for our new core. We have Joba, Cano, and Melancon. You got Austin Jackson on the way in a year. You got Brackman next year. Cole the year after. Montero right with him.

You trade the rest to get real live major league talent and stars.

We dropped the ball. Everyone else is expendable.

  192. Carl D

Maybe LA would give you Larry Bowa to coach 3rd for Kennedy. But that’s it.

  193. VOIII

    Dave,
Tino was aquired via trade and was never a “Superstar”
That said, Tex would be a quality get…ditto for CC… I am all for building through a good farm system. However, no contending team in today’s Baseball has done or can do this. Supplementing good young players with solid veterans is a necessity.

  194. stuart

wang is taiwan we get the point the christian playing tonight was a bad move Goldman said it. But tell me what was wrong with the lineup the 3 previous days when these stars played..also tell me why Damon got Schooled by Saunders with man on 3rd yesterday and ol=nly 1 out also?

I read goldman all the time i bet if you did also you would not agree with him all the time..

Bryan I disagree with you totally. Mark Loretta is clutch..Usually contact hitters are so called clutch because they just put the ball in play. Other clutch hitters without looking at the #’s I would suggest are; Damon, papi, pujols, and Jermaine Dye.. Unclutch Cano, beltre, and ricky weeks.
. If you look there #’s up please fill me in how there avg with no men on and RISP are,, SHould be interesting..

  195. Jose

I’ll take a guy like Doug Mientkiewicz over Arod on my team anyday

  196. j

the yankees should probably stick with cano for the next few years as he has shown some promise. he needs to start pulling the ball more if he ever wants to hit 20-25 homeruns. alot of his outs are lazy fly balls to left, so perhaps he should consider going around on a couple.

  197. kasey

    interesting stuff in this thread.

“girardi has done a terrific job…” yeah, except for the part where his team looks lifeless (and has on several occassions) and he over-manages the lineup on a near daily basis. i mean, you take away the fact that he can’t send them same nine guys out there two days in a row, and his team doesn’t seem to respond to him whatsoever, and he’s done a bang-up job. hell, maybe they oughta throw a contract extension at him, wrap this genius up a while before other clubs come calling.

“yanks fans are spoiled…” completely agree. it is not any team’s right to make the playoffs. the yankees have been very successful for the last decade+. down years happen, and this is what they look like. chances are pretty good they’ll have this thing turned around in a few years, if not sooner. it’s a drag that it had to happen in the stadium’s last year, but whatever. it was going to happen sooner or later.

“why didn’t you press him, pete…” maybe because girardi didn’t even let kim jones finish her question? what is it with people that they think managers and players are like suspects being interrogated? if the guy doesn’t want to answer a question, he’s not going to. he’s just going to get defensive, combative, and end up supplying the writers with even LESS information. it’s not really that hard to figure out.

carl d’s post is a good one.

  198. ken

Stuart: “boston has a tons of holes, that catcher position for them looks good next year.. kotteras and cash, good luck fools…
there pen is flammable… they have alot of age also…”

For a team with a “ton” of holes you name 1? Catching? And the yankees have posada who might be turned into a first baseman? Other than that you’ve got molina and irod? Can’t you come up with better holes than that? And bullpens change season by season. A good one this year could be bad next, and vice versa. Not to mention that one arm can turn a bullpen around.

And the average age of the red sox is 29. Not too young, not too old.

Other than those problems, you made perfect sense stuart.

  199. curlyshemp

“I’ll take a guy like Doug Mientkiewicz over Arod on my team anyday”

LOL I hope you were being sarcastic. If not, this may be the dumbest thing I have read all day long.

  200. RockinDaBronx

Girardi’s Rules : Rule number 1- gotta rest a hot bat.

Girardi was a crap catcher and is an even worse manager for the Yanks.

  201. Patrick Bateman

“If you watched his games w/ Atlanta you’d know why. Almost always in the big spot he’d pop up or ground out, who does that sound to you ?”

    Derek Jeter

  202. frankie d

When is the wake? 2-4 or 7-9?

    Who? The yankees.

  203. Nick in SF

Phelps about to swim again, Olympics fans.

  204. Mumbrella

Moose is pitching on Tuesday, so Molina will be the catcher. Maybe Joe can give us the Melky/Christian/Molina?sexson combo in the lineup. I think they would actually score negative runs. But at least Jeter wouldn’t hit into DP’s, since nobody would get on base to start with.

  205. Matt

The Yankees are already down 2 key bats in Matsui and Posada. So what does the brilliant manager do? He decides to sit two MORE key bats in a crucial game down the stretch against a lefty who lefties hit .338 off of! BRILLIANT! So now we’re down FOUR bats instead of 2. But despite that, they still have 4 or 5 supposedly “good” hitters in the lineup and still got shut out. Embarrassing.

  206. WJ33

If you were the Yankee boss.Which guy do you want to trade or call off his contract in the end of this year?
It is a difficult question, but I wish Yankee rebulid to be a younger and stronger and have all heart desire to win team.

  207. skeptic

GEEZ! get off girardi already. we have a whole team full of underachievers and you guys want to harp on one guy not playing. he wasnt gonna play all 3 games on that turf anyway!

like damon was gonna make any damn difference on a team that was rushing like hell to get out of there and hit the bar!

damon and giambi have been so effective of late that we’ve lost what 10 of 16 or something?

unless jeter, abreu and arod are gonna start producing in the clutch, this team aint going nowhere. piling blame on the mgr for sitting a late-30’s OF who’s crashed into too many walls is just scapegoating.

  208. skeptic

“If you were the Yankee boss.Which guy do you want to trade or call off his contract in the end of this year?”

thats easy- astats. that is a bad contract which is gonna look even worse as it goes on (and we dont win anything)

too bad he split with boros, he could be in anaheim or st louis now and we could have used the money to shore up CF, SP and the bench before the season.

and it would have raised our ba with RISP.

  209. jhby

I agree with Skeptic, get off Girardi. He isn’t the guy choking at .225 with RISP or throwing gopher balls. There is absolutely no life in this overpaid baseball “royalty”. At least if we end up third or fourth in the division this year, it will mean cleaning of the house.

There should be a lot of $100.00 “cheap” seats next year.

  210. VOIII

    Skeptic,
Do you read what you are writing?

“GEEZ! get off girardi already. we have a whole team full of underachievers ”

Is that not a measure of inadequacy? Is a manager who manages a team full of underacheivers not responsible for his team’s performance on the field? if not, why have a manager at all? Why don’t we just let Saint Derek run the team?
Where is the evidence that Joe has done a good job? Over the last few years I grew frustrated at the other Joe’s lack of fire and bullpen management. But never has the team looked so lost and so disconnected with the uniform they were wearing…This is a disgrace of a team and reminds me of the Stump Merrill Yankees.

  211. Nick

Brandon, don’t call Tex unclutch when posters have already compiled statistics that claim otherwise.

After this year, it would probably take more than Cano to get Kemp. But I’m down with that.

  212. dan

Real tough stretch right now fellow Bombers fans, not going to get any easier to take. Right now season hanging by small thread. Boston going back home having survived this road trip, Yankees phumfering to the finish line will prbably be lucky to get one in Minn

Melky was an embarrasement last night, just no representation at all of what a MLB AB should be.

I think Figgins Ground Ball just stopped bouncing in Anaheim
When Sidney Pnson is your ace, tough to take

Right now is as tough as its been in years, something needs to change now otherwise going to be a dead Sept

  213. djsunyc

i had to scour a few websites but nowhere does it say we are officially eliminated from the postseason…

stop acting like drama queens and let’s see how the rest of the season plays out…
