Joba Chamberlain played catch for six minutes in the outfield at the Stadium this afternoon. He said he felt fine.

We’re still waiting on the lineup.

Gonna be a lineup shakeup tonight?

  2. Rubin August 15th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Im guessing there just waiting for Gardner and Ransom to show up, then they’ll post the lineup.

  3. Rubin August 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

I know they want to be cautious with Joba, but I think they are starting to get too cautious.

  4. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Gonna be some line up. Sounds like Giradi and co are pissed–and they should be.

  5. #9 August 15th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

“Gonna be a lineup shakeup tonight?”

Yes – Damon gets anoter day off.

  6. TurnTwo August 15th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

i would guess Ransom is just the backup IF because Betemit will be DHing most of the time.

    Damon CF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu DH
    ARod 3B
    Giambi 1B
    Nady RF
    Cano 2B
    Pudge C
    Gardner LF

  7. Andrew August 15th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I hope they went the pull the lineup out of a hat a la Billy Martin route.

  8. TurnTwo August 15th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

although, if Gardner is up, i guess he’d be in CF bc he’s got a better arm than Damon…

hmm, i guess you can forget my lineup prediction… im not sure anymore!!

  9. Leo August 15th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

why would Gardner play LF and Damon CF. Gardner in center.

  10. #9 August 15th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

“I hope they went the pull the lineup out of a hat a la Billy Martin route.”

I was just gonna write the same thing.

  11. TurnTwo August 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

“why would Gardner play LF and Damon CF. Gardner in center.”

yeah i corrected myself, and then withdrew my lineup altogether.

  12. Al from BK(Broadway Brett and his wrangler jeans) August 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Good that Joba threw but don;t rush him! We need him for next year which is more important.

  13. pat August 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

    Hasn’t Molina been catching Andy?

  14. DFox August 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

No, when Gardner plays center (which should be close to never) then Damon DH’s. Any time you can keep Damon out of the outfield, the better. Why would you put Damon in LF instead of Nady? Nady is clearly a better fielder.

But in reality, the by far strongest lineup is with Damon in center, Nady in left, Abreu in right, and Gardner on the bench.

  15. mel August 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Great news. Hope he doesn’t feel any discomfort afterwards.

    Repost:

Sorry to keep picking at the scab, but the more I think about it, the more I think that the leak yesterday was a negotiating tactic.

Of course school is important, I’d be the first to say that. But I don’t think that Cole is going to UCLA to study TIM or sociology or economics or whatever. His goal in life is to be a professional ball player. The sooner you get in the system the sooner you can make the majors.

Especially with the Yankees who are putting a premium on good young pitchers. There’s an excellent chance that you can be on the fast track like Joba, Hughes, or Kennedy if you work and have the goods.

Just as in football, baseball teams want a return on their investment. Especially with bonuses reaching the $5M+ range. They want that ROI sooner rather than later.

Poll question: Will Garrett Cole sign with the Yankees?

  16. COL 88 August 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I want to see this lineup

    Damon CF
    Jeter SS
    Betemit 3B
    Cano 2B
    Ransom 1B
    Christian LF
    Pudge DH
    Molina C
    Gardner LF

  17. Joe I August 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Six minutes? Hopefully, the Yankees offense can put together innings longer than six minutes tonight, or am I asking too much?

  18. #9 August 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    Another Billy Martin move:

Have Giambi go up and bat right handed a la Mike Pagliarulo.

  19. number18 August 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

six minutes? thats his “throwing program”…. great…

  20. Peter Rabbit August 15th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I would do it like this for FUN:

    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    A-Rod 3B
    Nady LF
    Giambi 1B
    Pudge C
    Cano 2B
    Gardner CF
    Damon DH

  21. Rubin August 15th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Anybody else think there might be a waiver trade in the works, and the Yankees just want to show off Ransom? I’d welcome that, as long as we get a player who can actually play.

  22. Andrew August 15th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

“Have Giambi go up and bat right handed a la Mike Pagliarulo.”

They should have tried Sexson from the left side before they cut him–maybe his power stroke is just inverted and he would have started launching bombs from the left side. I guess we’ll never know. RIP Richie Sexson’s Yankees career, what a ride it was!

  23. E-Man August 15th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

What’s so fun about having your best hitter bat 9th?

  24. pat August 15th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

    Col 88

LOL. The only way that’s happening is if you buy the team from the Steinbrenner’s.

  25. Leo August 15th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

    Damon DH
    Abreu RF
    Arod 3B
    Giambi 1B
    Nady LF
    Cano 2B
    Pudge C
    Ransom SS
    Gardner CF

thats my guess Jeter gets another day off

  26. Garrett August 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    “Hasn’t Molina been catching Andy?”

Yes, but we need all the offense we can get.

  27. SJ44 August 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

I’d laugh my butt off (in a sad, sadistic way) if we see the lineup and Damon is out for Gardner, with Girardi saying he wants to give him, “a day”.

Over under on how many posts fill the blog if that happened! lol

  28. Leo August 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    hmm col8 has 2 leftfielders

  29. sw August 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Pudge should DH over Betemit since Molina’s probably catching Andy.

  30. TKinDC August 15th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

    “Hasn’t Molina been catching Andy?”

Yes, but we need all the offense we can get.”

Moose and Molina are locked in together – I think Andy pitches to whomever Girardi wants.

  31. E-Man August 15th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

It’ll probably be Abreu today or Nady for the 10 millionth time.

  32. JoeT 28 in 09!! MOOSE FOR HOF, MO FOR CY YOUNG YANKS FOR PLAYOFFS!! August 15th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Mel – I say that he does, the question is more of the time.. I say it gets done around 11:52 tonight

  33. Bob(The Original) August 15th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I’d laugh my butt off (in a sad, sadistic way) if we see the lineup and Damon is out for Gardner, with Girardi saying he wants to give him, “a day”.

I think I’d officially boycott the rest of this season.

Have a feeling Girardi won’t give Damon another day off this year. lol

  34. Leo August 15th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

If girardi really wants to send a message this should be his lineup

    dh Damon
    SS Jeter
    RF Abreu
    3B Arod
    1B Giambi
    LF Nady
    C Pudge
    2b Ransom
    CF Gardner

  35. Garrett August 15th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Whens the last time the Yanks had the same lineup for 2 nights in a row?

  36. Mo August 15th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

“Anybody else think there might be a waiver trade in the works, and the Yankees just want to show off Ransom? I’d welcome that, as long as we get a player who can actually play.”

I doubt they are showing off a 32 year old minor league journeyman for any deal. Maybe they have something in the works though

  37. stuart August 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Melky just turned 24 this month.. his #’s the previous 2 years were not that bad..

    What happened to him???

  38. TKinDC August 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    mel –

If Cole has half a brain he will sign. The risks he runs by not signing are incredibly high. Cash in the bank today is worth a lot more than a chance at risky cash 3 years from now.

That said – Boras has gone nuts before and held kids out. I’m not optimistic.

  39. Rubin August 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

I say Cole doesnt sign. Hes probably faxing his LOI to UCLA right now.

  40. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap) August 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

I think we’ll see this tonight

    DH Damon
    RF Abreu
    3B Rodriguez
    1B Giambi
    LF Nady
    SS Betemit
    2B Cano
    C Rodriguez
    CF Gardner

  41. JR Yankees August 15th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

What possible waiver trade could we have going?

I certainly hope there is some kind of lineup shake up tonight. Time to rattle some nerves and see what happens. Can’t get any worse. If there is no improvement in the next 2 weeks, call up all the young guys and let them play the rest of the season.

The scores probably won’t be too good but atleast there will be a lot of effort on the field.

  42. TKinDC August 15th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    “What happened to him???”

He lost that lovin feeling :(

  43. Leo August 15th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I would rather have Ransom in there than Betemit. Everytime Betemit swings at a pitch 2 feet in the dirt i cringe

  44. stuart August 15th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

there is no lineup shocker.. what you want shelly duncan in the lineup..

it is the usual and we are stuck with betemit until matsui gets back if he does…

  45. stuart August 15th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Leo you ever see Ransom play?

I like people who want new guys in the lineup that they have no clue about…

  46. mel August 15th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    Rubin,

I think it’s safe to say that Cole faxed his LOI a long time ago.

He’s probably deciding whether he wants pinstriped or red sox linens for his dorm room. :)

  47. 86w183 August 15th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I think the Cole situation and other similar situations will spur the establishment of a signing bonus system similar to the NBA. It’s just absurd that MLB allows its business to be blakmailed into huge signing bonuses for completely unproved talent. The NBA, by comparison knows much more about its draft picks, they are much closer to the majors and their first rounders get about the same money and sometimes less. I don’t know the Yankees last offer to Cole, but it was probably way too much. High school pitchers are about the least predictable guys to draft.

The agents will hate it, but MLB should be able to get the Players Association on board by agreeing to a 26th player on the active roster of maybe 2 or 3 additional opportunities on the 40-man roster.

It’s also appalling that the NCAA, which has often suspended football and basketball players for having agents looks the other way while Boras and others openly negotaite for kids which SHOULD take away their collegiate eligibility.

Joba shouldn’t be in the bigs rehabbing he should be at Tampa not hanging out at Yankee stadium. Can we just get a towel throw for this season Phil isn’t ready yet everyone wants him up here right away. Ajax needs to get this entire year in at AA and start at SWB next year and we’ll go from there. It seems like since everyone learned this players names for the first time all they want to do is complain about how they are not up yet, maybe its because they are not ready. Ajax is barely old enough to buy a beer let him learn how to hit first.

  49. Alan August 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

All waiver dealing is done as far as the Yankees are concerned. All moves now will be done in-house.

  50. Gene August 15th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Leo you ever see Ransom play?

Girardi saw him for most of March in ST. Ransom was a late cut.

  51. Rob Thompson August 15th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Great news on Joba. We need him now – plenty of time left in the season. There are over 40 games left!!

  52. NY Gloom August 16th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

The season is over after last night’s loss against the mighty Royals. Shut Joba down and rest em’ up for next season’s wildcard run!
