Everybody seems to think the season is over for the Yankees. But Joe Girardi and his players are not among them.

Dan Giese was placed on the DL. This notebook also has updates on Darrell rasner, Phil Hughes, Chris Britton and Hideki Matsui.

    It’s over Johnny!

“”If we win every day we’ll be in the playoffs. That’s the bottom line,” manager Joe Girardi said.”

‘Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart
How the music can free her, whenever it starts
And it’s magic, if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I’ll tell you about the magic, and it’ll free your soul
But it’s like trying to tell a stranger ’bout rock and roll’

Did you know that the 1969 Mets were 9 1/2 games out of first place on today’s date?

Pete, Say it ain’t so. Cole to UCLA????

  5. jason

    Cole will sign at 11:58:43.
I was just looking at the list of signed first round draft picks and only about 3-5 of the top talents in the first round have signed (including the number one pick overall).
I believe this is all about leverage. Cole’s leverage is to say he is going to college. The Yankee’s leverage is to say go back to college and we will take the replacement pcik next year.
Listen Cole and his family can’t say we will take what you give us just as the Yankees can’t see we are devastated, grief stricken, and optionless since you are going back to school.
This is high stakes and if Cole can get an extra million dollars that is real money. As pointed out previously the chance a high school arm makes it big is extremely thin and therefore this may be Cole’s only chance for hitting the lottery. An extra million means a lot.
If the Yankees keep him off the 40 man that is significant for them.
This may very well be high stakes poker played out through the media.
Wait and see and then comment ont he result rather than the suppostion.

“Did you know that the 1969 Mets were 9 1/2 games out of first place on today’s date?”

Yeah, but they were chasing the Cubs.

SJ44 – do you know the answer to this?

If Cole doesn’t sign, and the Yankees have two 1st round picks in 2009, are both eligible to be taken away if the Yankees sign two type A free agents, or just the ‘native’ 1st round pick?

the pick they get for Cole is compensatory, and can not be taken away.

the other pick they normally get can be awarded to another team in teh venet the yankees sign a type-a free agent (like to the brewers for sabathia).

they are also still eligible to receive picks for type-a player they lose (like for Abreu or Moose, etc) and those cannot be taken away, either.

    Let’s go Mets!

  10. Matt

I feel the season is far from over.

Look guys, at the end of this month the Yankees will have the best team on the field, that they have had out there all year.

Matsui is gonna return, Hughes is gonna return, even Pavano is gonna return.

    Joba is also gonna return.

Hughes has been throwing the ball great in the minors, and let me remind you, he was the Yankees best pitcher in September of last year.

Wouldn’t it be something if Pavano can stay healthy and make 5 or so starts and contribute? It could happen, the guy is a former 18 game winner and when healthy can pitch.

You look at rotation of Mussina, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes, Giese/Rasner/ Pavano.

There is what? Around 42 games remaining? The season is far from over.

‘“1969 Mets were 9 1/2 games out of first place on today’s date?”

Yeah, but they were chasing the Cubs.’

Also – The Metzies also had 50 more games to play at this point in the season back in ‘69.

  12. NYY

Is Moose a Type A free-agent? I know he is having a great season. But when determining the type of the Free-agent they take into account the last few years. Moose was terrible last year. Also I guess the Yanks have to offer arbitration to get a pick for him.

  13. Jimmy the Saint

Also – The Metzies also had 50 more games to play at this point in the season back in ‘69.

And the Yankees have how many? 41? Ah, the days of doubleheaders!!

  14. Fredo Corleone

“But when determining the type of the Free-agent they take into account the last few years. Moose was terrible last year”

It’s the last TWO seasons that are taken into account. I wouldn’t bet on him being an “A”. Not sure though. Yankees would have to offer him arbitration, which I believe he would accept, rendering the point moot.

  15. Joe from Long Island

Look at it this way – You have to play the games anyway, so you might as well win. And if you lose, well, so what – nobody expects you to come back (82%, right, Pete?).

  16. Eric

Anyone think Pavano will agree to a 1-year contract for the league minimum (or close to it) next year with the Yankees as retribution for stealing their $40 mil?

  17. They shoot horses don't they?

Joe for manager of the year.

    Uh…not so fast Girardi.

It’s Maddon of Tampa Bay who gets this award.

Tampa lost Pena for several weeks earlier in the year and now will be without Longoria till early Sep and Crawford is gone for the year.

But Tampa instead of folding just continues to win series and maintain their lead on Boston while lengthening their lead on the Yankees.

Maddon has instilled a winning attitude on a team that had been a perennial doormat. And when a player on their team dogs it in the field. They sit and a lesson is learned. re: Upton last week.

And their front office comes in for some praise as well as they have assembled a team that has bench players who can multi-task by playing multiple positions. Re: Aybar played 1st while Pena was out and is now playing 3rd while Longo is out. Not to mention Zoborist(sp?) filling in at SS while Bartlett has been injured as well as playing the outfield where needed.

And again Maddon makes it all work by skillfully getting everyone playing time that keeps them reasonably sharp.

It will be interesting to see how far the Yankees will go to change the culture of the club for next year. For the kind of money they spend the bench absolutely has to get better and the everyday lineup has to perform better with RISP.

  18. Matt

Did you know that the 1969 Mets were 9 1/2 games out of first place on today’s date?

    **********

Different team with 25 different players playing in a different era. None of it applies to this Yankee team and it’s mindset.

  19. bennie

Joe G will get a free pass this year not because of injuries,Torre had hamsting injuries to deal with last year.Jor G pass is because this is his first year, oops Torre won his first year of coaching didn’t he?

    This team stinks period

  20. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Torre had a healthy roster his 1st yr. also guys in thier prime so don’t even compare it. And if Torre had been here this season he would have over stayed his welcome because there is no chance in hell the SP/MRP would be our strength under him.

  21. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Also the one guy that got hurt was Cone that 96′ season the rest was offense driven.

  22. 26 world championships

We got to get rid of Abreau, Cano, Caberra. They are the biggest bunch of non gamers in the league and they are all friends who seem to poision rally’s and fundamental baseball.

    Dump them or trade them

Add CC, Either Matt Kemp or Nate McLouth, or possibly Tex.
