Game 123: Royals at Yankees
YANKEES (64-58)
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
A. Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Cano 2B
I. Rodriguez C
Gardner CF
Ponson RHP
Sidney Ponson (7-3, 4.27) vs. the Kansas City hitters.
Zack Greinke (9-8, 4.09) vs. the New York hitters.
Notes: Thanks to Brian Heyman for calling in the lineup. … The Yankees have lost 13 of their last 19 games. Take away that eight-game win streak after the All-Star break and they’re two games under .500 for the season. … Ponson is 3-2, 4.72 in eight starts as a Yankee.
ROYAL FLUSH: The Yankees are 3-5 against the Royals this season with two games to go.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: The Yankees are on a pace to score 774 runs. They scored 968 last season. Oh, Kevin Long was the hiting coach last season.
I’m off today and will be away for most of the afternoon. Enjoy the game.

After last night, Girardi still hasn’t learned that he needs to put Nady behind A-Rod. And then he wonders why the team loses games!!
best lineup
I’ve been going to games for almost two decades now and I have tickets today. This is the first game that I can recall not having any desire to go, simply because of the way they are playing and the likelihood of a loss. And this is coming against the Royals. Shows how this team is faltering right now.
Lets see….
does anyone really care?
just wondering… lol
Perry:
I feel your pain, brother. But go and enjoy the game. The weather looks spectacular, it’s the last year for the Stadium, and even a bad day of baseball beats working.
I hate to say it but mystique and aura have left the building. Just watch the team. They look like that they are waiting to see how they will manage to lose each game. This is not your mother’s Yankee team.
We will win
Giambi earned his 23 million last night with the last at bat.
No sense complaining about the lineup anymore. It stinks. It will stink in every game they play for the rest of the year because the players will be the same.
These guys can’t hit with guys on base. Doesn’t matter how you line them up, they can’t do it.
No sense discussing the lineup until 2009 when it will contain different (and hopefully better) players.
Now? Just realize they won’t get many hits with RISP, will chase 20-30 pitches out of the strike zone, and fail to do anything resembling good, fundamental hitting.
Its been that way for 122 games. Does anybody really believe its going to change now?
I just can’t f’n believe they STILL have giambi batting 5th while leaving about 10 men on base last night and going 0-5, batting sub .200 with RISP..
This manager really has no clue.. I’m so tired of managers who think they owe more to an individual player than their team. Does it really take more than 75% of the season to see the person is NOT getting their job done in the 5 spot? Did I really just see you tell Gardner not to bunt when he is batting near .100 and is a professional bunter?
Girardi is just awful..
that lineup has great players in it… now how about they actually do something to have their name worth being in there!!!
I really wish that Girardi would flip Nady and Giambi in the batting order. Giambi has been just awful. I am really glad this is his last season as a Yankee.
Last night’s game went just like this season has. Mistakes and failure to score with RISP. Kansas City had lost 3 in a row and 7 of 8 coming in and the Yankees again come out looking flat.
This team is utterly awful!! They can’t hit or pitch in crucial situations. They look like they have given up on this season. Let Joba take the rest of the year off and bring up the single A team. At least they will try to win!!
They actually are my mothers yankee team. they just arew not the team that many have been spoiled with in the 90′s. I am already here at the stadium it is a beautiful day for baseball. I will enjoy the game, enjoy the stadium as always and know that tickets that o have for the last game at the stadium actually will be the last game.
I have a bottle of champagne I’m opening the last day of the season, the last day of Giambi in pinstripes.
Regardless of how the team is playing, if you have a chance to go to a game, you go. Especially since this is the last year at the Stadium.
Being at Yankee Stadium on a beautiful day beats doing just about anything else.
rhapsody…
i bet the yankees sign him again
anonomouys
Your odds are better with the NY Lotto.
Left, right, left, right, left…..
The cadence of the Yankee 2008 season death march….
Giambi is in that spot becuase Joe wants to go righty, lefty, righty.
They`ll win today
rhap, probably. i hope they don’t sign… they better not. the yanks need to stop signing big veterans and get good young guys… look at the rays
If they do sign Giambi again, it will only be for 23million Spanish Pasetas, which is about 200k.
He’d still be over valued. Can someone get stephen hawkins on the phone so he can roll his god damn wheel chair over to Girardi and explain how someone batting .333 and is smoking hot might be better than someone batting .200 with RISP in the 5 spot? Maybe it really does take an award winning physisisisisisist to get through that thick head?
The order of the lineup means very little. It just doesn’t matter if none of them hit with runners on.
left, right, left, right be damned! He can’t hit lefty or righty, what’s the difference?? Besides, that only works if they change pictures on you, and so far every scrub pitcher has gone 7+ innings vs us! Argh my statistical head is going to explode! (Stand back)
err pitchers :p
yeah, put Nady behind A-Rod. Giambi as the #5 hitter has really hurt A-Rod the last 1.5 months. he’s definitely not been getting as many good pitches to hit as when he had, say Matsui behind him a la 2007.
Giambi’s more of a #7 hitter in a good AL lineup – a slugger who walks a lot but hits .250ish. the #5 hitter needs to hit more than that. Giambi has streaks where he does that, but he’s not been consistent since 2002.
unless Matsui comes back, it does seem like Nady should be #5.
black Yankee…
That’s been Joe’s problem/mistake ALL season. He is so caught up with the lefty/righty thing that players are batting in spots that they are consistently unsuccessful in. He thinks he is outsmarting everybody when in actuality, he is just setting the team up for additional failure.
Notice I said additional because they have failed in plenty of other critical areas on their own.
melky, hughes, cano for johan is looking better and better everyday…
why didnt our front office make the move!
we have a worthless boss
REPEAT AFTER ME…….JOE MUST GO…..JOE MUST GO..
I hate to take this spot, but giambi deserves to get held accountable because he bats fifth and gets lots of RISP opportunites, but the guy batting fourth should get the same treatment.
That swinging bunt by Arod in a big spot last night was a joke. Last night they got two big hits, one by Abreu and one by Jeter
If Matsui was playing they`d win last night and many other nights as he is the best clutch guy they have
I agree. This team sorely misses the bat of Matsui.
Can we please win a game?
Westerner99, the lineup order does have some impact. primarily in terms of:
1. the people batting higher in the order get more ABs.
2. certain spots provide protection for great hitters. in this case, A-rod’s had no protection for months, which then means he gets less pitches. if you’ve got a consistent hitter like Matsui following A-rod, A-Rod gets better pitches.
and then that probably has consequences – does A-Rod start to swing at bad pitches because he gets frustrated, etc.
so i think the lineup order can win/lose you a few games
JR Yankee
I agree. Other teams who dont have the luxury of going L R L R do with what they have and do fine. I dont think going L R L R at this stage matters.
Although I do not think Giambi is the only issue. Having your cleanup guy, in a year where the entire team is struggling offensively, have only 1 9th inning RBI all year? thats big
Actually, the Yankees have a (thankfully) rare “luxury” this year; since the rest of the games are meaningless, we can check out how people like Ransom and Christian can play when the start every day. It would be interesting to see if they inject some life into this going-through-the-motions bunch. Start Ransom at short or third.
Yeah, they could go on an ultra-hot streak from here on to sneak into the playoffs, but we know these ballplayers, what they can and won’t do.
Pete’s taking the day off, and I think I’ll watch Ken Phelps (Yanks, ’88-’89) swim.
“melky, hughes, cano for johan is looking better and better everyday…
why didnt our front office make the move!
we have a worthless boss”
Why would you assume that the Yankees’ numbers with RISP would be any different with Johan in the rotation? IMO he’d have a nice ERA and strikeout total but have a less than breathtaking W-L record because nobody’s hitting.
Whenever Girardi screws up the lineup, it always comes back to get him and lose us a game. You have to say that he definitely should be accountable for this.
Why is Jason Giambi the 5 hitter? It’s one thing to say Nady has to earn that spot and can’t just take it from Jason, but he has, and a lot more. Giambi is hitting .215 or so with RISP and .067 with the bases loaded. And of course, as usual, he came up with the game on the line with them loaded and flew out weakly to center despite working the count in his favor.
Nady is hitting .335 or so as a Yankee and over .300 with RISP. Why he is not hitting 5th is just ridiculous. Nady is the most productive hitter on this team behind Abreu and A-Rod and he’s hitting SIXTH? Come on! Giambi is an automatic out or walk at this point in the season. This isn’t June anymore. He’s horrible now.
Who knows if the way Soria was struggling, that Nady could have punished him and won us the game? Giambi certainly couldn’t, as usual.
SJ44, murphydog, randy l -
Do you think if Cashman chooses to stay (it is his choice, at least as of now), he would have the necessary fortitude to really make bold changes (i.e. – trade a fan favorite)?
I fluctuate between thinking this year is an aberration (ALMOST EVERYONE having an off year) and a culmination (the end of a slide that I see from 2004 on – slow-ish starts, having to make up ground quickly, making the playoffs, but getting booted early being the symptoms). It is very difficult to fathom so many things going wrong in one season.
At the end of the day, ARod is having a decent year number-wise, but even he is disappointed in his RISP numbers. I had the opportunity to do out-of-town scoreboard watching this past week. A frustrating pastime, to say the least. While I wasn’t aware ARod was in an 0-for-whatever, I did notice that every time he came up with RISP, with one or 2 outs, the inning ended. But it wasn’t and isn’t only ARod. It would be absolutely unfair to single him out, in spite of the fact that he is the cleanup hitter and is being counted on to, well, clean up. This dismal season has been an almost total team effort. I don’t think the Yankees have no heart – I think most of these superstars don’t really know how to handle this kind of adversity. I think each of them takes too much of a burden on himself. BUT I do think that because they are each used to being “the guy,” none of them is comfortable doing small things. And I think that no matter what Girardi may or may not be asking them to do small-ball wise, I believe that when the chips are down, or the pressure is on, you fall back on what you’ve always done – try for the big hit.
The Yankees need some not-so-big hitters. I like Nady. I think they give Cano another shot, but stop saying out loud that he is going to be “the guy” or that you expect his power numbers (HRs) to go up. Let him be what he is (was) – lots of doubles, line drives, hitting to all fields. That’s valuable. But let him work on better situational hitting. That’s where Matsui was most missed, and also Posada to some extent.
Jeter needs to rest when he is injured. He’s not 27 anymore.
Anyway, it will be interesting this off-season. One thing the poor performances has served to do was to temper fanaticism about this or that player, and perhaps the ensuing moves to be made will be easier (for me, I admit) to take.
“Giambi is an automatic out or walk at this point in the season.”
If G walks with bases loaded, that ties the game, no? And then Nady is up. Is that so terrible a plan?
i bet we will be tipping our caps to grezike today.
For that matter why is Arod hitting 4th? His numbers are close than giambi with RISP, and AROD is a better player. So Arod is failing worse.
Girardi is doing the same things he was doing earlier in the season when most commenters here were adoring at his shrine. He hasn’t changed.
Will he? That’s the question. Some think he’s too rigid to adapt, others think he’s just early in his managerial career and hasn’t accumulated enough experience to adapt successfully.
He’s not going anywhere, so we’re all going to have the opportunity to find out for ourselves which it is.
Peter,
Why did you delete my post in another thread? I abided by the terms of service. I think you were just upset because I pointed out your hypocrisy in criticizing Hank’s comments that the season was over a few days ago, only to agree with him after yesterday’s loss. I understand the deletion of inappropriate posts, but simply talking baseball and talking facts should not be deleted. I’m sure your minions would’ve come to your defense anyway. Why are you so scared for people who read this blog to realize your hypocrisy? Maybe you should just stop spewing it all over the board, and we’d all be better off.
Old Steinbrenner would have knocked him out already. Girardi makes the lineup. Girardi makes the game decisions. Girardi is the one responsible for motivating the players, and getting them to perform.
so…..
Long may have been the hitting coach but many also used the former hitting coach as well, Mattingly, who was the bench coach I dont even know who our bench coach is this year.
Doreen:
“Do you think if Cashman chooses to stay (it is his choice, at least as of now), he would have the necessary fortitude to really make bold changes (i.e. – trade a fan favorite)?”
Yes, except that many fan favorites have no trade contracts.
“It is very difficult to fathom so many things going wrong in one season.”
New manager, new owners, key injures, lousy hitting, resurgent Rays not giving away easy AL East wins anymore.
BTW, Nady to me is a RH O’Neill. Love him and hope they keep him long term, despite the fact that he is having a career year and will not likely have the same numbers next year.
“Jeter needs to rest when he is injured. He’s not 27 anymore.”
Amen. Just like there had to be Joba Rules, there needs to be Jeter Rules.
Cano may draw interest in the off season. Some team may be looking to gamble that a change of scenery will refresh this guy – maybe he’s NL material. I think the Yanks need to plan to go forward without him. ST ’09 will be big for Cano if he is still around by then. If Cano stays, I would like to see the Yanks acquire a real 2d baseman to fight Cano for the job in the spring.
I liked Girardi as a player, as a manager – not so much, stubborn and shows his lack of experience. I think we are stuck with him though unless another overhaul happens pre-2009.
I know it seems bad, but people who are calling this year the worst they’ve ever seen obviously weren’t around during the Stump Merrill era. They were godawful from 1989-1992. I’m not even going to speak to the CBS years because I wasn’t around, but even though I was only a kid I remember those years when the Yankees were truly awful.
These Yankees? They’re a middle-of-the-pack team, no worse than any other contender that’s fighting or rebuilding to make the playoffs. And it’s something that we haven’t been used to seeing. Over the last 14-15 seasons (if you’re counting 1994, since we were the best team in the league that year), we have been spoiled. Horribly, horribly spoiled. 10 division titles, six A.L. pennants, four World Series championships, three wild cards, that’s a dynasty that’s unmatched. The Braves had 14 straight division titles, but only 1 World Series win.
I think we all have to come to grips that this very much has been a rebuilding/reloading year, like the 2006 Red Sox. We have been killed by injuries, but unlike teams like the Sox or the Rays, we have a bunch of players who are too old and past their primes, and a bunch of other players who are too young and inexperienced and not ready just yet.
I don’t think you give up on Girardi, this is just as much a learning experience for him. Will he learn from his mistakes this year? That determines whether he keeps his job in a year or two, because the front office is going to reload the team. It’s almost a blessing in disguise, because now they, and we, are forced to look at how the Yankees need to operate. They have the right idea, replenish the farm system and don’t jump at every available player just because they have a big name. But at the same time, they need to be smart about it. Not every high-priced free agent is a gamble that’s not worth the risk like Randy Johnson or Carl Pavano, and not every stud farm hand is going to turn out to be a homegrown superstar like Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera.
SJ44: You’re right, about the lineups and going to the stadium whenever you get a chance. You’re also right about the need to change the kind of position players they go after – Nady seems to be a prime example of that kind. Joel Sherman (who seems to be everywhere all of a sudden) commented recently on how the Red Sox now have key players that are what the dynasty Yankees were: in essence, grinders with talent. As you say, the superstar at every position thing has been tried, found wanting, and needs to go.
It’s a pity that this collapse should come in the same year they close out the (soon-to-be) old Stadium, but it will allow management to make the necessary changes to get back to winning baseball. Just seeing Joba in the dugout during the game was a refreshing sight. As you say, building from the pitching out is the way to go.
murphydog
Ah, the old “no-trade” clause. Forgot about that. In which case, what’s a GM to do if real changes must be made?
New manager, new owners, I give you, But in prior years, they suffered through injuries to Sheffield and Matsui and a decimated pitching staff, just not at the same time. Every team expects and plans for injuries and for some things to not work out, but it seems that this season close to everything the Yankees planned on turned out far worse than the worst-case scenario. That’s why I’m not convinced this season is an aberration.
In any case, next year management and ownership won’t be new (at least as of this date), so that should help a bit.
I also know, after following baseball for many years, there are cycles – no team can expect to remain dominant forever. The Yankees have been more fortunate than most over the entire course of their history. And no fan base ever thinks their team’s dominance is going to end. It is because of the Yankees rich history that I have faith that this, too, shall pass.
SJ44, aside from Eiland and maybe Thomson, Girardi’s coaching staff is going to look very different next year.
I meant to type I’m not convinced this season is NOT an aberration. (Double-negatives!)
Today will be the day Ponson gives up 10 in the first inning.
I’m completly tuning this game out.
I just can’t take anymore.
Even if somehow they win, it doesn’t matter.
you can’t just dismiss this year, just ‘cuz it’s been dismal so far. the team can still fight for a playoff spot, there’s 1/4 of the freaking season left!
baseball’s a game of streaks. the Yanks win 5 in a row, Boston loses 5 in a row, etc. sure, it seems unlikely; but look at baseball history. jeez, just look at 2007 with the Phillies & Rockies.
let it play out before throwing in the towel.
I’m pretty sure that’s not the real SJ44 guys.
Was that the real SJ44?
George, I would agree, but just watching the games night in and night out…there is no fight to this team.
We can’t pretend that this is young, hungry, upcoming team like the Rockies or Phillies. The team is anchored by rich old men playing a children’s game.
i would give joe the rest of the year to prove his worth,by rallying this team to a decent record. if he does not do that then there should be an immediate change.
As for Long, in the past he worked under Mattingly and Torre, two guys who knew hitting from the inside out and had the credibility with current hitters that ‘been there, done that, and have the career BA to show for it’ brings. Now he’s on his own and even if his message is the right one it doesn’t have the same impact.
It will be interesting to see how the team reacts when we are close to being out or officially out of the playoff race.
Will Girardi rest the veterans and play the young guys? Will he give guys like MO and Andy the rest of the season off?
Will he manage games like Spring Training games without looking at results (i.e. keeping Joba in with the bases loaded 1 out in the 6th, up by 1 run)?
And what will the mood of the clubhouse be? Will it be constantly depressing and somber or will they accept it and try and enjoy the final season in Yankee Stadium and have some fun (or for some guys, maybe the final season in pinstripes)?
“there is no fight to this team.”
Disagree. Not fighting and not succeeding are 2 different things though.
2 outs in the ninth last night with no one on and they still were trying to fight back. If they had gotten a run in that inning, people would say they were fighting. Since they didn’t it’s a different perception.
Nope, it wasn’t me. Not in the 11:09 post and not in the 11:23 post.
All of the one’s prior to those post were mine.
This will be my last post for the day. It seems our imposter is back now that he knows Pete won’t be around for the day.
The 11:16 post isn’t mine either.
The level of global organizational failure in the yankees right now is astounding. From top to bottom – from the minor league system up to executive management.
Lots of good posts today – murphydog (good to have you back), doreen, randy l, SJ44 and many others today have made really good points on the state of the team as it stands.
The team on the field is completely inexcusable. The way they are playing now is unacceptable.
But unfortunately, the rot is very deep and this off season things need to change. Dramatically.
The debacle of this year’s draft is just the latest disaster in an awful season. The reason why this draft is so concerning isn’t even directly related to Cole not being in the system.
The draft and player development are now supposed to be the foundation this organization is being built on.
For a core strategic imperative like the draft to go so badly is an awful sign for an organization. Absolutely terrible. That’s like IBM saying, well you know our research initiatives just collapsed this year. There’s no excuse.
If you are going to say that acquiring talent and developing it is going to be primary direction you are following to move forward that process cannot go as badly as it did.
They had 3 of the top 75 picks – 2 didn’t sign and the third maybe hurt. And getting picks next year is in no way equal value. You’ve lost a year of development and the opportunity cost that goes with that. Also, no guarantee you’ll get to chose kids as talented as they could have had this year. Part of what makes cole not signing so difficult is that there were several other very good prospects still on the board at that time they could have selected (kasey kelly, shooter hunt, zach collier…) all of who went on to sign.
Player development this year has been mixed. Lower minor leagues things have gone well. But AA and AAA – lots of disappointments.
And unfortunately, the Red Sox and Tampa Bay continue to roll along. Those organizations are like machines right now. Boston doesn’t have great pitching in their system but the number of impressive position players they have is remarkable. They are going to keep producing players like Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowerie and Ellesbury for years. Even if they don’t produce absolute superstars they do a great job of developing very productive major league players. Tampa Bay – just forget it. The amount of talent they have is ridiculous. They will be a very good team for years to come.
I think murphydog’s point abouts what to do next are right on the mark. This organization has gone through massive change in terms of ownership and management. Adding a lot of new voices now could just complicate issues and increase the level of noise.
At the same time – drastic change is needed in terms of the major league roster. And a complete review and reevaluation of the player draft and development process is needed.
Each year a player gets older increases the chance that that player will just collapse in terms of production. It increases the risk of the player just suddenly falling of the cliff in terms of performance. That risk is usually not very high and difficult to predict. The best predictor is the way the player performed the year before.
Unfortunately, this team had a global collapse of its position players at the major league level – all at once. The probability of that happening all at once was very low. But it happened.
They need to find out why and fix it this off season – but they can’t just make change for the sake of change. They need to make change while not getting lost in noise.
That’s a very difficult thing to do.
figured as much SJ. Not only is the imposter childish, but he thinks we’re all stupid.
Doreen:
In some ways this year is the perfect storm that finally exploited the Yankees’ vulnerabilities in the regular season. The last few years, it took the playoffs to expose them. Add in age, no amphetamines and a new manager and maybe this year the end comes before October.
And I do agree there are cycles, but this has been coming for some time, brought on by too-high salary levels, too many no-trade contracts, poor farm tending/draft neglect and promiscuously dealing in Free Agents. Bad business finally caught up with them.
But there’s an odd thought that’s been occurring to me lately. It almost seems like The Stadium wants to go down and take its treasure with it. After Rizzutto, Murcer was the last link to the past and now Bobby’s gone, Bob Sheppard may never return, the team is flailing…
Is it too much superstition to suggest that The Babe and the other ghosts that Jeter talks about are not happy about moving? Or is it just in keeping with your cycle theory that the Golden Era is finally over?
Last year at the end of the season, I quoted a Paul Simon song from “Still Crazy After All These Years” called Night Game. When I think of it being the end of the Stadium, it comes back all the more strongly:
There were two men down
And the score was tied
In the bottom of the eighth
When the pitcher died
And they laid his spikes
On the pitchers mound
And his uni-form was torn
And his number was left on the ground
Then the night turned cold
Colder than the moon
The stars were white as bones
The stadium was old
Older than the screams
Older than the teams
There were three men down
And the season lost
And the tarpaulin was rolled
Upon the winter frost
Pat at 11:29 is right.
We’re too ready to judge effort by results.
Or maybe we’d rather believe they’re better than this and it will all be okay if they just try harder.
Wasn’t there a book or a story called ‘I’m Running As Fast As I Can”?
What if they’re running as fast as they can?
would you guys put hughes on the block for a young position player/prospect ?
Trisha – that can’t be the real Trisha. Things are bleak for the Yanks, but becoming a Red Sox fan?? Never would a true Yankee fan go that far!
I thinks it so funny how if Melky did what that guy thats playing CF did last night u guys would be all over Melky today and say how he should be out of the line-up, But this joke of a player gets a pass. He was horrible last night and is still playing. Id rather see Christian or Damon in CF. Glad the Yanks used Melky as their scape-goat. now what ru guys gonna do???
Curious, how does Girardi still have his job?
I am now more concerned with the level of baseball intelligence in the front office than before. Hank doesn’t have clue. Cashman sits there and does nothing.
I am really really concerned about the future of the Yankees. This team should be booed every inning they are on the field, that includes Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte.
No one cares anymore about winning. They look sloppy, no effort, they pout.
I am still of the opinion this is all because Girardi is the manager. He does not have any connection to these players and they don’t care because they have 12-23 million reasons not too.
I’d trade Cano for a young outfielder like Matt Kemp.
The Yanks really need to address their outfield over the next couple of years and it would be wise to acquire one mainstay this offseason and another one next offseason.
Second base could be replaced by someone like Mark Ellis. Not a flashy guy by any means, but a guy who plays hard every single day and fits into the Scott Brosius mold of the late 90s.
He’s also an outstanding defender.
I’d really like to see an outfield of Damon, Kemp, and Nady next season and perhaps Austin Jackson, Kemp, and someone else for 2010.
One thing that has to be clarified as soon as possible is – who is in charge? Is it Hank? Hal? Levine?
Frankly once that issue is settled – and it will become clear when Cashman’s situation is resolved – then the team is actually in excellent position to conduct a complete overhaul.
If they were this bad and didn’t have $84M coming off the books it would be a much more difficult position. While I agree with those that have pointed out the failures of the front office and the player development organization – the team we see on the field can be fixed in relatively short order.
RF, 1B, CF and to some extent the catcher are going to be different going into next year. I would guess that one of the pitching vets will not be back. Robbie needs to be fixed or moved out.
It has been a lost year in many ways – the draft was just the coup de grace. But the off-season should be fascinating to watch as it unfolds.
murphydog -
Yogi and Whitey are still with us. But, yeah, I’ve had a lot of the same kind of thoughts lately. I know logically they are ridiculous, but they ALWAYS bring up the ghosts during the good times; maybe the ghosts have always rattled their chains in displeasure, but the demise of their place of residence is making people take notice that these are not always happy ghosts.
Seriously, though, I don’t think so.
But I love the poignant lyrics you just posted. They’re so evocative of what I think a lot of us are feeling. The end of the season drawing near; the end of the most recent “dynasty;” and finally, the end of the Stadium itself.
It’s not unsalvageable, all of this. Not in the long term. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least somewhat blind sided by this season’s work. This season is not salvageable. Too many things would have to break just right, too many other teams would have to fail. They never seemed to find their rhythm, this team. Not from that weird April without a homestand to speak of. And this season, come to think of it, Yankee Stadium has not been the haven it should have been – the ghosts, indeed, have left the building.
The question is, Murphydog, are they already preparing the new domicile? Or are they gone for good?
Jay23,
Melky has had three years to suck. Gardner’s had 70 ABs.
Besides, now that they are essentially out of the race – they might as well play him and see what he’s got.
They are in the evaluating mode for 2009, so that’s why Gardner is on the team and Melky is not.
How does Girardi get a pass every game and day?? He should be all over the back pages. Torre was all over them and this guy gets a pass. He doesnt know how to manage this team , come on he made veteran players run like they were 18 year old recruits. He never is around the players joking or talking to them. He talked to Bobby Abreu when Meachem held him up why is he talking to Abreu about that, Abreu had his back 2 the ball, talk to the 3rd base coach not the player. He is real bad and needs to start taking some heat. GET BUCK SHOWALTER here HANK
Second base could be replaced by someone like Mark Ellis. Not a flashy guy by any means, but a guy who plays hard every single day and fits into the Scott Brosius mold of the late 90s.
Completely agree. Cano is one young chip they can get rid of and not have to worry about future success.
I would like to see them trade Cano, get a relief pitcher and an outfielder, then sign a second tier 2b who is just happy to play and plays his ass off.
Still believe they have too many single skilled players and not enough “baseball” players.
SS is now the position they need to start addressing. Jeter is in his decline.
Do you realize just to reach 85 wins, the Yankees need to win half of their remaining games!
How long has it been since the Yankees were a team in trouble of reaching 85 wins.
Really Melky sucked for 3 years?? WRONG. this year he has struggled I agree but every1 was fine with is playing the last 2 years, and Gardner is older than Melky, and they bring him up and he hasnt done anything at all. Melky couldve done exactly what Gardner did. The Yanks know Gardner sucks and so I think they are giving Melky the rest of the year to play everyday and not hear the BOOS and try to fix it b4 spring training. Melky is def a better player than Gardner and needs to stop being a switch hitter and not worry bout his power and be a role player for us and bat .290 or so off the bench and play a good OF when called on.
Our pitching has been our biggest force this year until the second half begun. you can almost guarantee when it comes to the 4th & 5th slots in the rotation that the Yankees cant pull off a win. Our offense has been A-W-F-U-L all year long. The team has no life whatsoever. The injuries have cursed us! Ever since pudge has come over we have done nothing but lose..Yankees need to go out this offseason and sign both C.C & Tex. The bench is really weak. I suggest they look for somebody better other than Betemit who has occassional power strikes out way too much & cant play defense for his life. Either Melky gets it together or we look for a real centerfielder. I think the royals DeJesus can make a good fit here. A .300 hitter who has some pop. Melancon should be in the pen next year and whoever Cash can add the mix who can ACTUALLY help then be my guest. Im excited for next season and the new stadium. Now Im not counting out the Yanks this year because ANYTHING can happen in baseball but no depth. *Sighs*
“Last night they got two big hits, one by Abreu and one by Jeter”
What about Arod’s sac fly to tie?
What I don’t get is that once it became apparent that Cole wasn’t going to sign, why wasn’t some of the money to be used on him spent on some of the other signability guys? The draft would have sucked a lot less if they had signed Monar, Dweyer and company.
murphy
I said something similiar to my husband the other day, does the team having a bad year make it easier to leave the old Stadium for a new one. A turn the page sort of moment. It’s like the ghosts have already moved across the street and are waiting for everyone else to catch up with them.
Brain Surgeons who the hell is Girardi going to hit 5th??
Everyone is an expert on the lineup and other BS.
Giambi sucks, arod is unclutch, Cano is in a fog, abreu is a woosie, etc.
these guys all make million and are not getting it done..
when the yanks score 3 runs they schould score 6, when they score 4 they should score 7 or 8.
this team cannot score, it is not girardis fault..
maybe alex can catch a popup and get 100 RBIS’s this year. you think for $28 mill he can get 100 RBI’s.!!!!
They just suck plain and simple, MO has 5 losses and cannot pitch in tie games, that is a problem, his problem not girardi’s..
withouth seattle and oakland the yanks really suck..
3 and 5 against the royals, that is all you need to know…Jeter having a good few days abut again no extra base hits…
THEY NEED MATSUI today…….
Trade Cano, name me more than 5 better 2nd baseman??? He will be younger than any of the guys u name, plus look whos under contract next year and you want to add another OF. Come on be real. Cano will be fine, and he has been playing with the bruise wrist and none of us know how bad it is or isn’t. Look at the roster and tell me Cano is the main reason we are where we are?? No way Cashman trades Cano nor should he. Yanks need a 1b, Damon and Nady are at the Corners next year.
“- the team we see on the field can be fixed in relatively short order.”
TK,
I wish this was true but I’m not sure that’s the case – at all.
For this team to fix things relatively quickly a few things need to happen:
1. They are able to make another trade like the Nady trade that nets them a productive player 30 or under without giving up an asset they are in immediate need of. That will not be easy to do.
Quite frankly – I think it would take them getting another team to again make a trade that is highly favorable to the yankees or the yankees making out like bandits on a deal.
2. CC has to be signed.
3. Joba and Hughes. Joba needs to be helathy. Hughes needs to develop quickly and be a highly effective pither next yer.
4. Big wild card – Cano. This is the big turning point for the organization. Is he their future 3 hole hitter? Or is he trade bait?
I once looked at Cano as a guy who could be a complementary superstar – a guy who you don’t build a team around but can add significant value to the core foundation as he offers a lot of “surplus” production at a position that is now, outside of catcher, the worst offensive position in the game.
But that was only the case if the core guys produced. Instead they collapsed – and now Cano has to be either a huge part of the team’s foundation or he needs to be traded. If he’s traded – they must get back significant value for him. He can’t be traded and the guy they get back doesn’t work out. This can’t be Javy Vazquez again.
There’s a lot of other things that need to happen. But those to me are the minimum.
That’s a lot of low probability events that need to happen in order for this team to compete in the near term. Not impossible. But still very, very difficult.
is the season really over? sigh. when do we starting thinking of next season and start thinking of how to rebulid?
“How long has it been since the Yankees were a team in trouble of reaching 85 wins.”

I still, like an irrational lunatic, believe!

Whiffs Cano bat you have not posted anything positive ever so your alarmist posts are idiotic..
Yeah the Yanks are going to be the pirates anyday now..
they will have 7 or 8 new players next year, they have many young prospects regardless of the loss of the great GERIT COLE(LAUGHABLE) AND BITTLE FROM MISSISSIPPI..
YOU GUYS ARE SUCH WOOSIE FANS, THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END, OUR MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM IS IN SHAMBLES, WHO IS IN CONTROL, AHHHHHH..
Oh and all our prospects are busts because hughes has done jack this year, melky got sent down, gardner looks bad at the plate, they traded Tabata, etc…
Yeah Charleston looks devoid of talent>>>>>>>Ajax is never going to do anything, betances is washed up after all he is like 20, brackman will never pitch, Joba is a flash in the pan, hughes does not have 4 plus pitches at 22 he is scott kamineicki..
CUt the whining woosie nonsense.. They will be fine, I am not in denial.. giambi, abreu, and others will be shipped out, they will get younger and more athletic.. How does Nady Look? Look like a legit player for at least thru next year? Looks like he comes to play hard everyday, is that a good thing?
I forgot Melancon blew a save last night in SWB so he will never amount to anything according to you quiters..
GET A GRIP….
There is a tale about Rabbi Akiva who saw wolves roaming on the mountain where the holy temple once stood. He was very happy and responded to the baffled mourners beside him that since he sees one prophecy is being fulfilled, he is certain that the second prophecy will be fulfilled.
Moral: they are losing is such horrifying weird untypical ways, that an insane reversal of all this can occur.
Cano will be fine, and he has been playing with the bruise wrist and none of us know how bad it is or isn’t.
Don’t think Cano will be fine. He has “mannyitis” and goes through these lulls all the time. In the past, it was covered up by hitting over .300. Now that he is human, there is no margin of error any longer. He signed a decent contract in the off season and is now like all the rest of the Yankees, taking the money and running, providing no return on the investment.
Aside from Cano, the one thing on this blog that is tiresome is all the bitching about injuries. Seriously, how do other teams compensate for their injuries and the Yankees fall flat on their face. Injuries are an excuse when a team uses them. Even worse when their ownership justifies them as the reason the team is struggling. This is nothing more than something to hide behind because the organization failed to put a viable product on the field.
In any other business, if you had employees who were performing at the level the Yankees are while collecting their salaries, layoffs or firing would ensue.
It is time that management, the players, and Girardi speak truthfully that the Yankees quit after the Baltimore series. That the players were upset with Girardi and his inability to guide them through tough periods and his lack of experience as a manager. Furthermore, they should all confess that both Girardi and Kevin Long have not influence on them.
Last, Cashman, if not fired as he should be, needs to clean house for the sake of the future, not to bring some WS back to yankee stadium in 2009 at any cost. This current team is the result of “at any cost” and right now, their AA and AAA counterparts are better.
Cb I do not see anything on your wish list that will not be done..
they have numerous arms package some for another position player(Texas or someone else)
The Cano issue is someones call, he needs to play better or package him.. IF he does not get it together in the next 40, ship him out in the offseason..Get a CF and sing Ellis or Hudson..
they have plenty of arms they can trade that people want without trading; melancon, brackman, betances, and a few other big arms..
If phil coke, jb cox, zach mccallister, abeledajo, britton, ramirez, or veras, etc… and 1 other stud arm are required to get a position player or 2, they will do it, they still have plenty of arms and still have montero, jackson, angellini, romine, and other talented prospects…
they got nady and marte for 4 pitchers .. 1 Mccutcheon who may be a long term keeper that is it…
I understand this has been, as the Queen once said, an “Annus Horriblis”, but aren’t we overreacting? Up until this year, everyone thought Cash and the scouting guys had done a great job rejuvenating the farm systeme. So now we have a lousy farm system because of some bad luck? I don’t get it.
Was there a change in philosophy all of a sudden? I thought the Yankees had invested a lot of $$$ towards scouting and development, spending lots of cash on draft picks, etc…..Did they become dumb and cheap all of a sudden? If so, maybe Hal is to blame as he controls the pursestrings.
I’m just trying to understand what happened here since people just don’t become stupid overnight.
Jay23,
Do you bother to watch these games?
I’ve heard the Cano argument a thousand times. It just doesn’t fly anymore.
The truth of the matter is this – he does not come to play ball everyday. Even the most rabid Cano defenders would acknowledge that.
Cano often lacks focus and the team always seems to need creative ways to get him to stay focused (ie: Bowa, Jeter yelling at him in the clubhouse, batting him higher in the lineup, etc.).
Baseball players shouldn’t need personal trainers to keep them focused. It doesn’t take an ounce of talent to play hard every day and Cano just doesn’t do it.
Guys like that don’t often ever reach their ceiling and I’m a believer that Cano is one of those guys.
I want a Yankee team full of baseball players who give it their all 100% of the time. I just don’t see Cano as the superstar others do because his mental game is just not there.
I think the Yanks should trade him now while his value is still high. And they need to address the outfield, so a young guy like Kemp would be a fantastic target.
Kemp has far more upside than Cano anyways and would patrol the Yankee outfield for the next 5-7 years.
Hal is in charge…. Hank is merely a mouth piece. That’s why his quote about doing whatever it takes in 09 is empty. If Hal decides to be tight with the purse like he has been in the past, then nothing will happen. That’s why I caution people who except CC, Manny, Tex, Sheets etc. to be in pinstripes. We have no idea what Hal is like and if he wants to spend like his father, the early read on him is that he may not. The fact they went bargain shopping in the draft and in the international market certainly doesn’t do anything to dispel those fears.
“They scored 968 last season. Oh, Kevin Long was the hiting coach last season.”
But……Don Mattingly was also here, helping players. I guess the players can’t get as much out of Rob Thompson when it comes to helping them when they are in slumps.
RUDY JARAMILLO IN 2009!
Good article in the Bergen Record. She was spot on in her analysis.

I’m watching Yankees Batting Practice a bit. Looks like an absolutely GORGEOUS day at the Stadium!

Whiffs Cano bat you have not posted anything positive ever so your alarmist posts are idiotic.
Here is something positive. Thank you for keeping score at home. You are an exceptional value to this blog.
Even more positive, but in a constructive manner, have you ever seriously read your posts/rants. From one idiot to another, here is what you need to say.
stuart: Hello, my name is stuart, I am a compulsive idiot.
Group response: Hi stuart.
Remember when people said anyone can win with a 200 million dollar team? I guess they were wrong.
Girardi can’t.
If you morons wouldn’t mind… Post the companies where you work so I can avoid them. Thanks.
We need more players like Doug Mientkiewicz here and less players like Arod, Abreu, Giambi etc.
Guiseppe Franco
Dont ever question me on watching the games. I watch more baseball than you buddy. U watch some games and try watching some other games than the Yanks. Tell me who you want other than Cano at 2nd???
Guiseppe Frano… your post was right on the mark on Cano and other players.
Well said.
They just showed huge lines of people waiting to buy tickets. They are still showing up, and this team better show up!!
If you morons wouldn’t mind… Post the companies where you work so I can avoid them!
CB, it’s easy for TB to have stockpiled talent when they were lousy for so long. I don’t think it’s fair to gush about the Red Sox’ farm system having wonderful positional players and not such great pitchers, when you then criticize the Yankees for the reverse. If the Yankees get knocked, then so should the Sox……….and if pitching is more important, then why can’t we praise the Yankees?
This was an “Annus Horribilis”, but that doesn’t mean the Yankees have a bad farm system or that they have stupid people running the show. Maybe they just had horrible luck – that could easily turn around next year.
I will wait for the next two games.
If we win these two games against KC, I will still keep my hopes alive for post season.
I see all the Girardi bashing, but I am sure the best manager ever in the history would not have made any difference with this team up until now.
When Mariano is giving up games on a consistent basis lately , you can not blame the manager. Don’t say that Mo has given up, he did not.
Tell me who you want other than Cano at 2nd???
Dustin Pedroia, Derek Jeter, Mark Ellis, Jeff Baker, Alexi Casilla, Orlando Hudson, Howie Kendrick,
“If you morons wouldn’t mind… Post the companies where you work so I can avoid them!”
I work for the Yankees.
AZ in FOur if Hal is in charge that is the best news there is..
Hal is not a alarmist who will make panic moves he appears to be a practial person and not let emotions get in the way of making long term decisions.
there plan is not real complicated I can spell it out in a few sentences; pitching needs to be home grown, if once in a blue moon a mega stud comes along that is worth the gamble take it.. horde arms and use them to rebuild the position players.. get the position players from the latin america market and use the US draft for arms.. overpay for high risk and high reward players and use you financial advantage here vs in the free agent market.
if you dabble into free agency long term contract for position players only but try to limit that. A winning team needs to be a team, you cannot short shrift the bench and continue to sign older declining Vets…
There hs been nothing done the last 2 years to contradict this plan at all.
Almost no free agent signings, even dumping older vets for prospects(sheff and unic), and a more aggressive foreign and US signings..How many prospects did they overpay last year??A ton..
“The question is, Murphydog, are they already preparing the new domicile? Or are they gone for good?”
The Yankees, like Baseball itself, are about Tradition and Tradition is bigger than one year or one season. I cannot believe that a team so steeped in tradition could ever lose touch with its past for long.
This year’s been a disconnect, the exception that proves the rule. Time to move on. It’s up to the 2009 team to play in such a way as to make the ghosts feel at home at the new Stadium, not the old one.
Quietly, players wondered whether the move really was aimed at Cano, whose lackadaisical play is infinitely more frustrating than his .262 average entering Friday’s game. His failure to run out grounders, just like his recent defensive disinterest in diving for balls, is leaving more than just the fans annoyed. Perhaps seeing his closest friend headed to the bus leagues will be enough to shake Cano out of the season-long doldrums. But if that’s what the Yankees really wanted, then they should have taken aim directly at their second baseman. Because based on talent, he is a much bigger disappointment than Cabrera.
This is exactly what I’m talking about regarding Cano.
If the Yanks have to get so creative in order to keep Cano focused – I think that is a sure sign that he should be moved to improve the team for next season.
There are no excuses for not playing hard every day. Whether people think Gardner is worth the roster spot or not, the guy goes balls to the wall 100% of the time.
Cano doesn’t do that. And probably never will.
You guys act like Cano cant have a bad year and that no one is ever allowed to have a bad year. Do you forget that he is still young, and How come Girardi doesnt get into his fact?? or sit him?? You guys had no problem the last 2 years with Cano, now you wanna trade him? Matt Kemp is a good player but is not a CF. Matt Kemp how do you know can handle NY?? What if Kemp comes here and bats .260 you gonna wanna trade him. Players struggle and its not like its just Cano struggling the whole team is.
Forgot to add Ian Kinsler, Jose Lopez.
Dont ever question me on watching the games. I watch more baseball than you buddy. U watch some games and try watching some other games than the Yanks. Tell me who you want other than Cano at 2nd???
Never mind. You can’t be reasoned with.
I’d rather discuss these issues with people who have a clue.
I think I’m going to have to say “goodbye” to this blog. It’s beyond awful right now, and Pete’s posts are little better than Captain Complainer and the rest of the chicken little Post-96 ‘fans’ out there. The offseason will probably be no better.
See you bandwagon whiners when the Yankees are winning again. I’ll find a blog where I don’t have to read so many idiots.
Interesting article jennifer. Thanks for the link!
Cabrera took the fall Friday for his best friend on the team, for the player whose slump is much more responsible for the Yankees being in this desperate last-ditch playoff push: Robinson Cano. As the news of various roster moves rippled through the clubhouse Friday afternoon, the surprise wasn’t that management had taken away someone’s job, but rather that Cabrera and his limited potential was the guy to get the ax.
“Players struggle and its not like its just Cano struggling the whole team is.”
That is a fair statement.
But the issues with Cano are somewhat different.
In the last few games how many times he could have stopped a ball going thru to outfield if he dove for it? Is it too much to ask? It has nothing to do with having a bad year offensively.
“It’s like the ghosts have already moved across the street and are waiting for everyone else to catch up with them.”
Pat:
Maybe they just don’t want to be around to see this season
A bad year does free up the thinking and open more alternatives when crafting the 2009 squad. Cash can get very creative with new money to spend and without having to cater to underperforming superstars.
New park, new team, both built for the future.
maybe bigfoot can come play for the yankees.
“Lefty righty lefty righty…” Somebody get Girardi some prozac for his OCD lineup. Let Nady drive in damon, jete and abreu after arod throws his bat down in disgust.
2nd base. Utley, Dustin un proven, Kinsler, Kendrick doesnt play all the time have not played 100 games yet. Lopez 1 year over .300 this year Hudson, 32 years old 1 year over .300 this year. Casilla is good but un proven yet. and Baker not even gonna comment on him. Come on guys please be real Cano is a top 5 2b. You guys just want some1 to pick on and dont see what the real problems of this team are. We have no leaders.
CB, I really respect your posts, but to say that the Yankees are likely not going to be competitive for the near future (meaning the next few years) seems to me an overreation to a year that has gone wrong in so many different ways. I just don’t see that happening again – it’s impossible.
This is just a general comment now, not directed to anyone in particular. Let’s say we admit that 2008 was lousy in every regard. Why does that make what Cash did since he took full power (when everyone was praising him for rejuvenating the farm system and spending $$ on scouting) now a complete mess? Why can’t we chalk it up to a bad year? I think it’s a complete overreaction to gut the organization based on one year. Now, if they are going to go cheap from now on, maybe Hal is the real problem.
Guiseppe Franco Really good you have no clue. I promise you this i know more about the game and the Yanks than you ever will. I am a huge fan of this team and will critic them and say whats wrong with them. But all you do is pick out Cano over and over again. This team has alot more problems than Cano and he has one bad year. I will admit it seems like he doesnt hustle all the time. Than Girardi should sit him down and rip him a new one, or how bout Jeter or AROD take him aside and get into him?? Hes an adult and should do it on his own, he is very talented and can and will be a .300 hitter, but I do think some1 needs to get to him. Yanks need him to win hate to tell you
betsy, i think its less about money than it was a complete miscalculation by everybody.
they look like an incompetent organization. the inoa saga is very puzzling and who knows how the shady business of carlos rios (who was fired BTW) affected that negotiation. it is amazing he was able to pull that off under cashman’s nose. and he was good too— he got us heredia, de leon, montero, tabata, vizcaino etc.
and cole suddenly decided to go to college? and to make things more puzzling, jermey bleich (our 2nd round pick) who is a boras client, took a BELOW slot deal and they waited until the 11th hour to announce it. he got the lowest bonus of any supplemental pick. most experts thought he was a reach to begin with, but the number he got is still very odd, especially for a boras guy with leverage. not one prospect added to this system this year got over a million, yet last year we added atleast 4-5. red sox spent nearly double what we did (actually, they set a record according to BA), and teams like oakland and the reds got premier talent and outspent us. the nationals were the only other team not to sign their 1st round pick and we were the only team to not sign 2 of our first 3 picks. and most of the players we did sign aside from marshall were overdrafts… we passed up on some high upside players and signability guys instead and took the ‘safe’ picks. reminds me of the pre-oppenheimer drafts.
this is the one area where our financial advantage should be applied and we didn’t apply it. again, the yankees don’t look good in any of this— its not being overly dramatic, its being real. the strategy seemingly changed this year.
Jay23,
Not once have I mentioned Cano’s average this season. The thing I’ve been harping about is his mental game and focus.
The above article with the players thinking that Melky being sent down was an attempt to shake up Cano is a perfect example what I’m talking about it.
It’s not about his bad season. It’s about his lack of effort and focus on a daily basis that infuriates me and the rest of Yankee Universe – fans, players, and management alike.
“I’m just trying to understand what happened here since people just don’t become stupid overnight.”
betsy,
It’s not that the people doing things last year are suddenly dumb. It’s just that when something goes as badly as this year’s team has and this year’s draft has then it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate why things are happening the way they are.
It’s not really an issue of being critical of the organization. But if this annus horribilus is going end then things need to change. That only happens if you’re honest with yourself.
I know Tampa has had years of picking at the bottom of the draft. You know what? It doesn’t matter. Because from now to the next few years they are going to have talent on the field – a lot of it. And the yankees are going to have to compete against it.
Remember – Tampa is a small market team. Sure they pick much earlier – but lets remember that they also have limited resources. They are on pace to draw 1.3 million fans this year. That’s less than a third of what the yankees will draw. And its not like they have a TV network to augment things.
The Red Sox pick at the end of the draft just like the yankees. And they’ve built a terrific team by developing players. Unfortunately, they implemented a system of drafting and developing players much earlier than the yankees.
That’s just the way it is. Time is a precious resource in any competitive industry. Companies go out of business all of the time because they didn’t adopt the right strategy in time. That’s tough luck.
For whatever reason why – it’s reality now. They Sox have a first class organization. It’s very impressive. And believe me – it’s a system. They are able to identify talent, develop it and bring it to the majors at an impressively high rate.
It’s true they’re not as good with pitching as position players – that’s why they’re having such problems with their bull pen now. If they don’t fix that issue with their player development – they’ll pay for it. But for right now – with beckett, lester and matsuzaka under 30 – that goes a long way in making up for their system.
If the yankees had 3 position player under 30 like beckett, lester and matsuzaka then they’d be able to make up for the deficiencies in the position players in their system – but the yankees don’t have that. This is why Cano is such a problem.
I’m not saying the situation is hopeless or anything like that at all. They have talent. But there’s a lot of uncertainty and they’ve had a very bad year from top to bottom.
You have to take a hard look in the mirror when that happens. And that’s everyone on the team and in the organization.
Dustin un proven,
Hasn’t he performed above expectation just like Cano did in his first 2 years?
Dustin is a gamer. Cano is not. That is really what the list is about. A .270 hitter who comes to play every day is far superior than a .300 hitter who picks and chooses when he wants to play.
I like Cano and also I am a coach, I would never let some1 that talented not hustle. I have sat my best players for mental errors and being lazy and it helps. Joe Maddon sat Upton last night for not hustling, It is a problem agree but I think Girardi should sit him during the game when he does it. I am all for that, Trading Cano to me is not an option, we have no one to play 2nd base, he is so talented and could be a huge part of this team and franchise. I think though he needs a good chewing though.
This year is definitely an abberation (except the RISP thing, that’s nothing new). Everything that could go wrong went wrong.
Even if the Yankees fall out of contention, I don’t expect the players to mail it in.
Go Yankees.
Cano, like any player, is human and can have a bad year without the team and the fans quitting on him. But there are bad years and then there are bad years.
There’s an old quote attributed to Joe DiMaggio, something to the effect of explaining why he played so hard every day. The answer was that maybe that game was the only one a particular fan would ever see Joe D. play.
I don’t get that feel from Cano. Personally, I don’t want any player on my team who doesn’t feel that way. Cano swings at bad pitches, swings at first pitches, seems clueless at the plate for the first half of the season and then he hit a hot streak. Now he’s floated back down again. Hard luck grounders? Nope. He’s trying to pull outside pitches, swinging at balls in the attic and biting on curveballs at the ankles. No plate discipline. That’s not a bad year IMO. That’s a bad player.
In the field he has looked lazy, out of touch and sloppy. He may be none of those things, but I believe my eyes. What additional motivation can anyone possibly hand him, other than making millions to play the game and playing it in pinstripes?
Trade him in the offseason or bring in a journeyman 2d baseman to challenge him in ST for the job.
To me Dustin isnt some1 i would take over Cano right now doesnt mean I cant change my mind. Im just saying right now IDK, doesnt matter thats not an option cause hes never coming here so its not worth arguing bout.
Inside the Yankees clubhouse right now:
A group of players are despondent. Robinson Cano giggles and picks off dead skin between his toe-nails. Derek Jeter shakes his head in surrender. Ivan Rodriguez is reading a trade magazine about duct work.
The door opens. Loud, slow footsteps are heard. A voice is heard..
Phil Hughes: Sons of Steinbrenner, I am Phil Hughes.
Wilson Betemit: Phil Hughes is 7 feet tall.
William: Yes, I’ve heard. Strikes out men men by the hundreds, and if he were here he’d consume the Royals with fireballs from his arm and bolts of lightning from his eyes.
(there is laughter. Robinson Cano is still picking his feet.)
Phil Hughes: I am Phil Hughes, and I see before me a roster of Yankees here in defiance of Tampa Bay and Boston. You have come to fight as Yankees, and Yankees you are. What would you do without pinstripes? Will you play?
Carl Pavano (via Skype from a “rehab facility”): Play? Against real teams? No, we will rest, and we will live.
Phil Hughes: Ay, play and you may lose, rest and you’ll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our division, but they’ll never take our Pinstripes!
(Robinson Cano continues to dig between his toes and begins levitating above his teammates, before transforming into a moth.)
steve,
Good call on the “Pre-Oppenheimer” draft… that’s what exactly what this one was like. Lots of conservative, safe picks. Their strategy and execution was inexplicable. The International signing period was even worse, IMO. There was no excuse to get out-bid by the A’s for Inoa. If you read between the lines in Rios’ interview, he even alluded to the fact that they may have allocated money to 3-4 “B” guys instead of the 1 “A” guy. That is so far from the Yankees-recent strategy, it’s mind boggling.
“Even if the Yankees fall out of contention, I don’t expect the players to mail it in.”
If you can’t be contenders, at least be spoilers!
Today Ponson pitches a no hitter, Arod hits 4 dingers we go home happy
Him not taking pitches to me should be discussed with the manager and it doesnt seem like to me any coaches are working with any of the players. You dont see any change in any of them. Kevin Long is only there cause him and AROD are friends.
Another reason teams like the Angels and the Red Sox do so well, is that they have high baseball IQ’s. Talent doesn’t mean much if you can’t make the right split-second decisions.
“Kevin Long is only there cause him and AROD are friends.”
Not true. A-Rod lobbied for Jaramillo to be hired.
Trading Cano to me is not an option, we have no one to play 2nd base, he is so talented and could be a huge part of this team and franchise. I think though he needs a good chewing though.
They can find another second baseman. Yeah, he probably won’t be as talented as Cano – but you can bet there are a host of them who come to play their butts off everyday.
And what makes you think Cano hasn’t been chewed out already this season?
Maybe the move to send Melky down is just another attempt to get Cano focused because all of their other tactics haven’t worked.
That’s ridiculous. You shouldn’t have to get so creative to get a player focused.
If that’s what it takes, they should move him for a piece like Matt Kemp and replace him with a guy who you know is going to play the game hard every single time he takes the field like Ellis.
The knock on Cano has never been about his talent. It’s about his drive and focus and lack of effort.
if the yankees dont make it i hope the following teams do, rays, twins, whitesox and angels. and in nl phillies cards cubs and dodgers.
The Captain has a 2 game hot streak! Hope he stops or Girardi will sit him tomorrow!
IF the yankees don’t make it……. they already didn’t!!!
“Lots of conservative, safe picks. Their strategy and execution was inexplicable. ”
They bet everything in this draft on Cole. He was the strategy.
I think they felt he was a very special talent. And they figured it might take upwards of $5 million to sign him.
And they were OK with that. They would have given him $4-5M.
But even for the yankees – you spend $4-5 M on one guy in the draft that’s 50% or more of your allotted budget.
In 2006 they gave kennedy 2.25M and joba 1.1M. So Cole was going to be much more expensive than Joba and Kennedy combined. Last year Brackman’s bonus was 3.25M. Cole was going to be considerably more expensive.
The red sox spent over $10M on the draft this year. That’s the most ever. That givens you a sense of how much $4-5 M on one player means.
That’s why they went conservative on the rest of their first day selections.
Then the other thing that happened that changed the draft for them was that small market teams for the first time started drafting kids to pay them over slot. That’s never happened the way it did this year. Tim Melville, brett hunter – when would teams like KC and Oakland take players like that before? Never.
With all of those guys picked by small to mid market teams there were fewer signability guys left on day 2.
The yankees draft this year was all about Cole. That’s how they allocated their resources.
He signs – it’s a very good draft. He doesn’t. Well, it’s what they have now. Clearly Bittle and Bleich’s injuries are blows as well. But this draft for them was very much oriented around one guy. And that one guy, as is his right, decided not to sign.
Cole was a high risk high reward pick. Unfortunately, they got the risk end of things this year.
the yanks do have 3 stud quality pitchers under 30; joba, wang, and hughes.. they also have 3 huge high ceiling pitchers in the minors..
the yanks are not in dire straights… there star players all underperformed significantly and that should be assumed to be reality not a off year, there young prospects fell way short of what they expected for results, and that is about it..
arod will play in about 140 games and he may not get 100 RBI’s that is not girardi or cashmans fault, it is ARods fault.
Giambi also may not get 100 RBI’s and the list goes on and on..
Assume they get rid of all expiring contracts so ; abreu, giambi, moose, pettite, pavano, Marte(team option), Irod, ponson, etc are all gone..
say the injured players come back . there rotation before any trades or FA is wang, hughes, joba, and then question marks.
the field has a OF of nady, damon, matsui, and whover in Cf, no 1B and posada back behind the plate.. the pen is almost completely back.. they need a CF, a 1b, and 1 stud starter.. that is very doable and that is thru trade or FA…They also will have a financial obligation of about $125 mill before making these moves….That is far from impossible.
As far as Tampa is concerned they should be good for years BUT they have done everything right this year. Besides Kazmir missing the first month they have had no starting pitching injuries(none) there pen has been way better then could have and should be expected. And they have gotten above expected performances from the likes of hinske, gross, riggans, and others.. Yeah they should be good for years but they are not a juggernaut, even if Price comes up next year.. I am not sold long term on Jackson, or Sonnastine or even Crawford who everyone acts like he is a superstar. He has been in the league for years and his #’s do not say superstar…
Basta,
Jeter’s “hot” streak is years.
Cano is just Robby being Robby! Wait till contract year!
Hey hey hey! I just noticed that an imposter used my identity to say the most vile thing anyone could want to say!
SUX FAN?????? VOMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven’t gotten to read the posts but I hope that nobody is dumping entirely on the offense here. There are times when different parts of the team have to pick the other up, even for very extended periods of time. There are going to be many times when the score is tied in the top of the 9th. Sorry, but Mo has really killed us in those situations.
GO SIDNEY!
GO YANKEES!!!!!
“And they have gotten above expected performances from the likes of hinske, gross, riggans, and others”
True, but they got considerably less than expected from Pena, Upton and Crawford.
This was the 10th time Rivera has been called into a tie game and the eighth that he has allowed the go-ahead run.
From Mo we all know that is totally unacceptable. Imagine if he had worked his magic in those games…
Just sayin’
Given the choice between a player who is extremely talented but there are questions about his effort and drive, and a player that is talented but gives a 100 percent effort every day……I take the latter player every time.
I admit to having some bias but I have never heard a fan or other player ever question whether Pedroia or Youkilis give it their all on every play of every day.
That is why the Sox traded Manny. Incredibly talented, but couldn’t be depended upon to show up with a complete effort or focus, and the Sox are 10-3 since saying goodbye to Mr. Ramirez.
mel-
What’s the Waipio reference for? Something related to the Big Island?
Stuart,
Good note.
For a change you did not use the words “mor*on” or stupid even once
‘I think they felt he was a very special talent. And they figured it might take upwards of $5 million to sign him.”
After seeing what superior prospects, Alvarez and Posey got ($6M or so each), I’m a little more convinced that Cole was a family decision moreso than a Boras engineered move. I believe if Boras had his way, Cole would be $5M richer this morning.
I still don’t get how 5 million didn’t convince Cole, unless he or whoever was in charge really, really wanted him to go to UCLA. College is a fantastic experience and all, but 5 million can set him up for a few decades if things flame out.
Why do so many people bring up the idea of “trade Cano for Kemp” like it is such a likely thing to occur? What makes you think the Dodgers would make this trade? Kemp has much more value than Cano. The Yankees would have to give up more than just Cano to land Matt Kemp.
Cano is a very talented young player…but i’ve had enough of his ‘smoothness’. he is lazy when it comes to approaching the ball. it’s like he never makes the transition from fungo practice to gametime
Trisha – I knew that wasn’t you earlier. I posted that right after.
looks like another day of tipping hat to the pitcher.
And I was thinking that Trisha had seen the light!!! Just kidding Trisha.
Mark, thanks for the explanation. Maybe I’m naive (it can’t be that I’m optimistic, because I am a pessimistic person by nature), but I’d like to think that this year was an aberration. Someone on another board mentioned the fact that the cost of the new stadium, being as prohibitive as it is, came into play (and that next year, with the income generated, things should bounce back to normal). I think it’s a good point, but I’ll bow to others expertise on this because I’m generally clueless.
It’s so frustrating to watch Cano – all the talent in the world, but no hustle.
Oh and I was reading through some of the posts on farm systems. I believed someone mentioned the Sux spending a ton of money signing drafts. Well I just read that they signed all of their top 16 picks – 16 for 16! That is incredible. I wish our farm system was as deep as theirs. They’ve got guys like Ellsbury, Pedroia, and Lowrie that fit right in with the every day players. We have guys like Brett and Christian. One is hitting .145 and the other gets picked off as a pinch runner. They have guys like Lester, Clay, and Masterson and we have IPK and Hughes. Out of those picks, the Sux have more no-hitters than we have wins.
And wow, did the Royals really strike out the side? At least we are 0-0 with RISP!
Ponson better pitch a shutout. It looks like the Yankees offense won’t do too much today except tell us how good Greinke was during their post game interviews.
Buddy,
Waipio is representing the West in the Little League World Series. They beat Connecticut in the opener yesterday.
So much for that shut-out…
Well so much for my shutout prediction.
well, thats it. game over. Have a nice day everybody!
Here we go again!!!
well…looks like for me, the next 2 hrs and 14 minutes will best be spent mowing the grass.
here’s to hoping
“I’m a little more convinced that Cole was a family decision moreso than a Boras engineered move. ”
Fredo,
I completely agree. Given past history I was going to assume that this was a Borass move until midnight last night.
But there is little chance that this was Borass. No way he’s going to let the kid pass up $5M. Borass’s son an Cole played ball against each other. I’m sure he knows the family well as they live close to where Borass does.
Borass’s draft strategy with the Aug 15 deadline implemented last year seems more clear now – wait until Aug 15 11 pm and then get your player signed.
The fact that Pedro Alvarez did not get a major league contract but signed anyway is very telling – Pedro may have wanted to sign given family reasons – but Borass didn’t get him to sit out for lack of a major league deal.
Borass also had Hosmer sign for $6M (amazing deal for the kid). If Borass takes $6M for Hosmer there is no way he was going to turn down $4-5 for cole – who was not nearly as regarded as hosmer as a prospect.
On the whole it’s probably best that Cole didn’t sign. Something happened over the past two months. I’d guess this was Cole’s parents who made this decision much more than it was the kid himself. For whatever reason, they decided that he should not turn pro under any circumstance.
Clearly, you wish they’d have decided this before the draft. But if his parents and he felt that their reasons for not turning pro were greater than $5M and the chance to play for the yankees then I’d guess they had very compelling reasons for him not to turn pro. It was probably a personal/ maturity issue.
Again, you wish they’d made that decision before the draft. Because the yankees bet everything on Cole in this draft.
The red sox had a much deeper draft than the yankees. But I’d still take the yankees draft plus cole over what the red sox got.
Remember the way Peter Gammons sounded as if he were about to cry when the yankees selected Cole? That’s how good he was.
Looks like another game where the Yankees make a pitcher look like Don Drysdale.
How do they go down on three K`s ?
Heres another situation where our lineup should be considered an over match on the Royals and they will play us even with nothing
Hey as Sid’s forum rep, I feel the need to point out that starting pitchers can’t always be perfect. At this point everyone has to dig deep. If they don’t they we continue our descent.
Is this game already over?
can we get a hit?
Trisha – I meant no knock on Sidney, but with the Yankees these days a starting pitcher has to be perfect since they don’t seem to get much run support.
The manager is the guy who must take responsibility for performance.
Making faces and talking about players in press conferences does nothing.
Arod
hit the ball out of the infield please.
Fran, that wasn’t for you! Once Sid gave up the homer I figured there would be a plethora of negative posts about him so I thought I would go with a pre-emptory strike!
“Given the choice between a player who is extremely talented but there are questions about his effort and drive, and a player that is talented but gives a 100 percent effort every day……I take the latter player every time.”
ray,
Come on. That’s very easy for you to say now after the fact that Manny is off the team.
But the Sox created a near parallel organization with its own set of rules for years just for Manny. Rules that allowed him to not only take plays or games off – but to literally take months off when he didn’t feel like playing.
You guys did this for years. For years you guys built an entire team – it’s core foundation – around a guy who didn’t give 100% effort over the course of a season.
You did it because he was more talented than the trouble he caused.
If Manny was still the player he was circa 2004 the Sox absolutely would have put up with him this year and would not have traded him.
It’s very easy to say things like that once he’s won you two world series and he’s been traded.
But perhaps no organization in sports was more accommodating to a player who didn’t give 100% effort consistently than the Sox were with Manny.
If Cole is as immature as reported, then maybe his parents made the right call getting him to college. $5 million is a lot of money for an immature, perhaps reckless 19-year-old to have when he first moves out. Who knows, perhaps if Doc Gooden had gone to college he would be going to the HOF instead of repeated trips to rehab. Sucks for the Yanks, but maybe this is a case of father knows best.
CB, great post and I completely agree. Everything you said makes sense. Cash is not a dumb guy – he’s smart, dedicated and has a plan. I’m a fan, period. Therefore, I have no doubt that he will take the time to figure out just what went wrong THIS year. My only concern here is about Hal. I like him a lot and he knows tons more than his brother, but I hope he’s not getting cheap on us.
The Yankees apparently have very good positional players in the lower minors, but since they are a few years away, you’re right – we are behind the Sox in that regards. I don’t see what we can do about Jeter if he is in decline, but with the departure of Giambi, the Yanks have an opportunity to start remaking their lineup. I have no clue as to what they are going to do with Abreu, though……and who is going to be their CF until Jackson is ready? This will be an interesting off-season to say the least. I have faith in Cash, though I know many fans do not.
The pitching just got decimated, but Wang did not suffer an arm injury and he’ll be healthy next year……as I expect Joba will (I say shut him down now). Phil is a huge key, he really is. Let’s say he pitches well when he comes up and he’s in the rotation next year. He has got to stay healthy, and if he does, we do have the makings of an outstanding rotation. LOL I’m trying so hard to think positively………….
I refuse to believe that this offense isn’t going to break out today. Refuse. I refuse to believe that the Yankees will lose today’s game. Refuse.
looks like its another night of 0-fers.
And I REFUSE to believe that Zack Greinke is going to pitch a NO HITTER in the Bronx.
What’s up with “perfect two” Michael Kay? Call it what you always call it – A NO HITTER!
Okay.
Looks like another game where the Yankees make a pitcher look like Don Drysdale.
How do they go down on three K`s ?
Say what you want about some of the other talentless guys who have shut down the Yanks this season, but Zack Greinke is the goods.
The kid has nasty stuff and is going to be a very good pitcher in this league. He just happens to play on a terrible team.
I’d take Greinke any day on my team.
The father’s financial situation was news to me –
“A club source said further that Cole’s decision had nothing to do with wanting more money. “His father is a wealthy man,” the source said, “and he wanted (Gerrit) to go to college. They weren’t looking for a big bonus. If you’re going to lose a draft pick, that’s the way to lose one.”"
from the Daily News.
Not sure what to make of the ‘that’s the way to lose one’ comment – exactly how is that so?
Trisha – it is a “perfect” two since there has been no baserunners.
Looks like Grienke is on today. Theres nothing you can do when the opposing pitcher is on like he is today.
ian Nobody- Worst team of all time? Really? Think things over before you start spewing your nonsense all of an internet board. Geez.
Just go with this. What if we got Hughes, a very doable verion of Pavano, Joba, and Matsui back. (Are we missing anyone else in terms of people actually on their way back?) And if they all came back and were in great form.
Could that make enough of a difference to do the necessary damage?
ugh, it’s only the 2nd inning and I already sense a “gotta tip your cap” postgame platitude coming up. just…ugh.
Can the Yankees please win a game? Or maybe that is too ambitious for this group right now…perhaps they can just score a run, or get a hit?
Kay dresses up like him mom.
ian Nobody- Patience with the young prospects will pay off sooner or later.
“Trisha – it is a “perfect†two since there has been no baserunners.”
Josh I realize that, but when Michael says NO HITTER the jinx always works.
Trisha – ooh haha, got it!
…so did you guys realize that Kansas has a no-hitter at the moment?
Ponson is pitching well and being very efficient with low pitch count innings. Now if only the Yanks could do something against Greinke.
Josh -
He he he.
Yeah a no-hitter over two innings big deal. Come back and talk if he’s still got it after 6.
ray
It is amazing how quick the Sox and their fans went from giggling about Manny being Manny to railing about Manny being a headache.
Man, this sucks. I feel bad for Sir Sid. He continues to pitch his heart out for this team but is getting nothing from the bats. Imagine what a “great story” he would be right now if only he could get some run support. I guess he used it all up in his 1st few starts.
ian Nobody- Yeah I do love the Yankees. This season has been disappointing but you just have to go with the flow. Now get off your computer and go hang out with your friends and eat cheese-whiz and tell fart jokes.
not only did grienke blow away the zillionaires in the first 2 innings but he did it on 29 pitches..
My perception is the Yanks as a whole cannot hit the top end fastball, is that accurate??
Giambi is so gone it is amazing..
Hey lets discuss that they are not winning because of Melky instead of the real culprits you know the guys at the top of the order..
wow, who would have thought these guys would cave like they have???Arod is having the worst 312 with 25 HR year I have seen in a long long time…
One virtue of losing Cole and receiving a supplemental pick next year at 28a is that it compensates the Yankees for the multiple draft picks they’re likely to lose this off-season in signing free-agents.
In ’05, when the Sux missed the playoffs, they spent like drunken sailors: $100 million for Lice-K, $70 million for Nancy Drew, and $36 million for Pechugo.
Exepect the Yankees to do likewise this off-season.
When what ian nobody?
CB
You make some very good points. The Sox were certainly guilty of putting up with a lot of stuff from Manny over the years.
But with that being said, apart from whether Manny’s ability has declined what was unacceptable to the Sox was that Manny’s effort and focus declined even from the other years.
You are probably aware that Sox management talked with many of the players and almost all of them said that Manny needed to go. There was a definite change in Manny’s antics and behavior from earlier years to this year, so it is simplistic to say that the Sox were willing to let Manny go now because he was not the player he was earlier.
The breaking point was when he refused to play the first game of the Yankee/Sox series because of his knee. When the Sox insisted that Manny have an MRI on his knee he couldn’t remember which one it is was so they did both. Enough said.
U got prospects to trade. These young guys suck
You know, we tend to look toward the postseason and still wonder if there is ANY way we can make it there. But someone posted something yesterday that I have to say I really agree with. I think I would rather have the Yankees end their season in September than to see them one and out. I think we would all have to agree that this team as it is presently playing and constituted doesn’t look like a team that could, say, maybe even get out of round one.
Just sayin’. I mean sure anything is possible. We saw the Mets looking horrific when that whole Willie stuff was going on and look at them now. Yeah things can change. What we don’t have on our time at this point is time.
This team just looks dead. the bench, people look like they would rather be somewhere else.
Do we have to start worrying about “perfect game” or “no-hitter”? Just Kidding.
Pat – From what I read this year, “Manny being Manny” went over the top. He pushed down the old traveling secretary because he didn’t recieve enough tickets, insulted the team owner, seemed to fake injuries, fought with Youk in the dugout, sat out key games, and generally did not play well.
In the past, “Manny being Manny” was taking breaks in the Green Monster or tripping over his own helmet running. Silly stupid stuff.
I personally was unhappy he was traded. He screwed up the chemistry of that team and now that he is gone, the team is playing better.
yea who would have thought Ponson would have actually helped and they still SUCK…
Cano doing his 3 pitch usual, Irod is as patient as Cano..
these guys are all talk, no action.. the balding 5 ft 7 2B for Boston has more toughness then anyone on this team….
Wow. It seems I have driven ian Nobody to the point that he has to accuse me of having multiple male sex partners. Dude your being incredibly pathetic right now.
Oh yeah dude. Your caps lock button is on. Its making you look even more stupid.
error. sigh
“One virtue of losing Cole and receiving a supplemental pick next year at 28a is that it compensates the Yankees for the multiple draft picks they’re likely to lose this off-season in signing free-agents.”
With Abreu, Giambi, and maybe Pudge all probably leaving don’t you think we’re going to end up with more picks coming than going?
the most frustrating thing about watching the Yankees these days is that when they’re getting dominated by a pitcher, you never really know if it’s because the pitcher is that good or the offense is just that bad. I mean Grienke is one of the better young pitchers in the game and looks especially filthy today. But they have been able to hit him in the past. Can they do ANYTHING against him today?
Yanks will get a hit today.
mel-
Nice! I played in that tournament in the 80′s, didn’t make it too far.
Ian Nobody with some classic stupidity,
you have seen our minor leaguers play?
when and how many games???
are you sad you have never had your team not make the playoffs in your 13 years on earth??
I feel bad for one Yankee today… Sidney Ponson. Here he is, he seems like he’s the only guy on the field who actually cares/believes they can win the game. He has to work around their errors, lack of offense, and bad energy. He’s pitching a great game but probably won’t get rewarded for it.
why is gardner on the team when he is a automatic out. where is austin jackson
ian Nobody- who’s your team?
Great post Iannobdy
Fully agree, all of us here were drinking Cashmans kool aid especially last winter.
Our minor leaguers are not that good
When you bring up a CF and he hits 134 that tells you something if thats the best you have.
He made an out already today so its a matter of time before he goes under 100
I bet that hit will be a lead-off triple followed by three strike-outs.
gardner is just as bad as melky cabrera
Ponson has a good pitch count
Josh- I wouldn’t be suprised
Josh- I wouldn’t be suprised
DFox –
I agree about Sir Sidney – but at least he will get paid next year for his performance. It really is impressive that he pulled himself together.
I still can’t see anyone signing him to a 2 year deal.
Hey look – a baserunner.
So now if we could get the blast we could take the lead!
Hit or error?
at least this won’t be a perfect game
Memo to 2009 offense: you might want to try tipping your cap to the opposing pitchers BEFORE the game and then knocking them around a little once the game starts. Just a thought.
Leadoff man on, come on Jeter, GIDP
“Theres nothing you can do when the opposing pitcher is on like he is today.”
I hear where you’re coming from but wasn’t that the point of putting together a $160 million offense that supposedly can hit?
And all the “tip your cap” postgame comments are getting ridiculous. No you don’t tip your caps, your job is to win games. I love this team but right now they are acting like a bunch of complacent has-beens.
I’m glad I gave my tickets today away. Losing to the Royals is pathetic. Saturday games have been particularly tough this season, you’re surrounded by tourists left and right who are not Yankee fans but are here to see the stadium so while I’m foaming at the mouth at the lackluster plays people around me are squealing about fake handbags in chinatown, empire state building and broadway shows. Sorry about venting but this team is making me MAD!
I hope this team finishes below or at .500 so the excuses can be nullified. If they finish above .500 they can pull out the usual schtick “Hey we did our best sometimes there are better teams, you gotta tip your cap” or “Sometimes you try your best and it isn’t good enough”. The fact is they didn’t try their best, they barely tried at all.
C’mon yanks, find a way to score here.
Yea Ian Nobody is the dumbest poster on this site and you need to be rock head dumb to win that honor.. good job Ian Nobody.
WTF is this now?
Cant buy a damn break
WHAT THE *%(*^*(%, Yankees cant get a break
I agree with Ian
For the Yankees to bring up a CF who can hit only 134 is a joke. Is that our big prospect?? if so we are in trouble
This Catcher for the Royals is awful- Why Giradri didnt allow Christian to steal earlier last night is a mystery.
Nice jetes, lets go Yanks!
“Given the choice between a player who is extremely talented but there are questions about his effort and drive, and a player that is talented but gives a 100 percent effort every day……I take the latter player every time.”
ray,
I was just responding to the comment you made regarding your preference for players that give 100% effort vs. the more talented player.
Not a big deal – we’re all just fans – but that does sound very contrived.
Sure things are different for Manny now. But look at how extreme things had to get before they became intolerable?
The Sox organization and fan base was more than happy to have Manny at its foundation and ignored the fact that he wasn’t giving 100% effort for years. Not a big deal – just a fact.
So in that case I’d guess you really didn’t prefer the player who gave less than 100%. You preferred the more talented player who didn’t really give a damn a lot of the times.
That was the right decision – he was irreplaceable and led you to two world series wins.
And sure this year was a nuclear detonation – but that’s look how bad things had to get before the Sox made a move. Look how unbelievably bad they had to get before the fan base turned on him. How bad did it have to become before the Sox and their fans saw the light and decided it was always more important to have guys who gave consistent effort vs. the more talented player.
And one other thing – 2006 was a disaster with Manny. A disaster. He literally closed up shop while you still had a plausible shot at the wild card. And despite that – your organization still welcomed him back. Even after 2006 when he just decided to take September off you guys still picked the more talented player who did not give 100% effort.
Again – that was the reasonable call. But let’s not have all of this revisionist history now after he’s won you two world series and been traded.
As I said before – and I do think this is true – the Sox did more and for a longer period of time than any other professional sports team to support a player who did not give 100% effort.
So on that play Jeter is supposed to make himself disappear? I remember the good old days when you were allowed to stand in the BATTERS box…
lets go abreu
Dee- This team is getting a whole bunch of new toys in the offseason don’t let these final 5 weeks stress you, they obviously conceded the season a week ago so take it easy watch some football.
Maybe he foul tipped it?
lol, Jeter interfered with the catcher? I’ll show that catcher what it is to get interfered with!!
Ugh, and it would have been a run!!!! F these umps!!!!
?????
I can only think someone had to have called time. Otherwise, what rule was that (Damon back to first)???
Yeah Robertson sucks you are a fool. the guy is 23 and has been up for about 6 weeks. he has pitched well in all but 2 outings.
Yeah Edwar stinks he would be the 8th inning guy for the sux.
I will no longer comment to you because you are beyond help, you are just a FOOL..
How does Girardi not argue that?
Yeah bobby! Lets go now a-rod
Somehow they will find a way to not score here.
WHY DIDN”T DAMON SCORE????????????????????
Bases loaded baby
They just have to score here!
Abreu another hit? Stop knocking him.
Jeter another hit? lay off him.
Lets see what Arod does here?
Also if Gardner and his 143 average is the best prospect we can bring up we are in trouble
“lol, Jeter interfered with the catcher? I’ll show that catcher what it is to get interfered with!!”
great stuff
FIRE BOBBY MEACHAM
…NOW he’s conservative?
Oh my Lord. Is Alex’s head in his divorce?
bases loaded, no outs.
come on yanks, let’s break the “bases-loaded-zero-runs” curse today.
I would have brought up Austin Jackson and Chris Malec from Trenton instead of Gardner and Ransom. Why are the Yankees so reluctant to dig into Double A for players. The Mets did it with this kid Murphy and he seems to be doing just fine. Other teams do it as well. What’s with the conservatism? Show some ingenuity for a change Mr. Cashman.
LETS GO YANKS!
I got GIDP
27 of 133 with RISP for arod 239..Ouch
Yeah it has really gotten to the point where in this situation you just feel they’ll find a way to not score any runs. Maybe in a way we’ve never seen before. Or the conventional strikeouts.
Arod gets fooled alot…
If we don’t score here I don’t know how I will go on.
I can see A-Rods postgame comments now “Greinke is a top flight guy with great command and I gotta tip my hat”
actually changed my mind… K rod
Lol.
If Arod has to make an out here I’d rather have him K than GIDP naturally.
Arods at bat with the bases loaded, result= K
WHAT A SHOCK!!!
i`M STUNNED
I
WTF A-ROD????
I don’t believe this. What a horrible at bat by Alex. I hope that the Yankees score here. I have a bad feeling.
strikeout with the bases loaded-ROD sucks
So there you have it.
Hopefully Giambi will find a way to at least plate a run.
BOOOOOOOOO!
ugh, and on a fastball? I expected him to get fooled on a breaking ball, but this?
did anyone really think that a-rod wasn’t gonna strike out there? can we please get rid of this bum?
Trish – actually a DP would have gotten a run in!
This is a major reason why they cannot win. Arod gets the most chances in these situations with the game on the line and he never comes through, unless we are up by 10 or done by 10
A-Rod is the problem. The Yankees had a chance to say good-bye when he opted out, but they blew it when they signed him. If they don’t trade him, the Yankees will not win a Championship during his stay. He is a cancer and a jinx until he proves otherwise
If they do not score here, I officially give up.
22 out of 107 witH RISP for giambi 206 or so..
Fran, unless they came home…
Michaels Kay’s comment-
Arod is one of the greatest players of all-time but he can’t catch pop ups, cant hit in the postseason, and he always strikes out with the bases loaded
2008 yankees, find new ways to lose.
The gun is in my hand.
Now its at my head.
ian,
you are right. too many kool aid drinkers about Yanks minor leaguers. The Yanks either have guys in the minors that are too old, AAAA players, or young guys who are extremely overrated
wow this is a bleeping joke
LOL, f’n figures.
this is sick, seriously.
I’m done, Yankees are the worst team in baseball
Losing comes easy to this team.
Hahaha, it’s like watching a trainwreck… every single day…
my boy greinke is dominating as usual
Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. The fans at the stadium should be booing MUCH louder and I wouldn’t be against throwing some stuff on the field.
And there are our 2008 Yankees.
$25 million flop Rod
$20 million HGH absent Giambi
Just funny! This team so deserves to be in Post Season.
Blame it on Melky. .they cannot score because of the 9th hitter..
thank god i cannot see the game in california..
arod and Giambi are total JOKES…
the odds are scoring 2 runs or more with the bases loaded and zippo outs is about 80 %…….
Bases loaded…no outs…clean-up guys at the plate…
This is painful to watch.
and on the postgame it will be ” he hit the ball well”
I think the whole team quit on Girardi. That’s what this is all about.
that’s why the batting order matters. you can’t have a #5 hitter, who always comes up w/RISP, who bats .250 and is too stupid or selfish to ever cut down on his swing w/2 strikes.
Trisha – you’re right. I was thinking a traditional DP like Giambi just hit into. I cna’t believe bases loaded and no outs and they don’t score. They are just horrible with RISP.
this is why you send damon when you have the chance.
well only a few more weeks till footballs season. so we can stop watching this trash
Good Lord. If there aren’t wholesale changes on this team, this will be a decline of epic proportions.
Good thing Giambi is a lefty so he bats infront of Naday. Brilliant!!!
Well, on a positive note…Giambi won’t be back next year.
Wow, feels like I’m watching the Knicks last season with Isiah Thomas. It gives me the same feeling…
Micro cosom (sorry spelling) of our season. Giambi? yup hes done, but the other guy? Arod? Step up son, step up to it. Put the ball in play, do something. Three hits in an inning and they cannot score against KC.
Giambi, yup rip him, but Arod is what? twice the player Giambi is? he has the same at bats that Giambi has.
Now you got Meachum holding guys up at third
Isn’t this just kind of the signature to the Yankee’s season.
Now we see whether Greinke is the kind of pitcher who gets a new life behind something like this or whether the fact that the Yankees have gotten hits portends something possible.
I haven’t seen Arod this hideous in a while. I have to wonder if his personal stuff is really having an affect. Perhaps his wonderful spouse has moved from one phase to another and is now in the anger phase and is really sticking it to him with his kids, etc.
I don’t know but it just is so really sad. How do you load the bases and come up empty.
Whiff – Not post season….post mortem!
Lou Brock once said “Show me a guy who’s afraid to look bad, and I’ll show you a guy you can beat every time”… and that really best defines a-rod… and unfortunately that scared, wussy attitude seems to have permeated throughout the lineup this season with the exception of Jeter and Damon
maybe its time to break out a saftey bunts and squeezes.
Girardi lost this team a few weeks back. They quit on him. There must be some serious tension in that club house. 4-5 hitters up bases loaded. Can either of them cut down on the all or nothing swing? NOPE. Simple fly ball? NOPE. If that’s ANY other team in baseball they score at least 2 runs. They’ve mailed it in boys. What’s most disgusting of all is in the post game they’ll tip there hat to Greinke. Yah, that’s what it was.
Who knew men’s water polo could be so much better than baseball?
They’re getting booed now, and deservedly so. Damon, Jeter and Abreu did what they were supposed to, but sadly the #4 and #5 hitters blew it bigtime.
They have GOT to move X into 4th or 5th. This is ridiculous!
“I think the whole team quit on Girardi. That’s what this is all about.”
Probably because he has no idea what he’s doing.
I think the Yankees forgot that they’re playing the Royals
“The Yankees are on a pace to score 774 runs. They scored 968 last season. Oh, Kevin Long was the hiting coach last season.”
torre was there and he has very strong feelings about a hitting philosophy, and mattingly was also there.
so this is long’s first year alone.
it might have been torre’s and mattingly’s approach that led to the 968 runs last year, and long’s approach that led to the 774 this year.
I’d like to re-visit my original comments made at 10:22am and re-call for Girardi’s head for batting Giambi 5th again..
Clueless management.. Hank should sit Girardi in a room and force him to read transcripts of Lohud blog entries to learn how to manage.
I can’t even get that mad at the ump because of the combined salary of the 2 guys who just choked us out of that inning. But that was such a BS call on Jeter.
And Meacham has to be fired immediately after this game. Damon could have scored there and he knows this team can’t score runs. Wasted opportunity. Moronic 3rd base coach. Horrendous overpaid underachieving offense.
I would love to see Rickey in the dugout tomorrow in place of Meacham, Long, or even possibly both at the same time! Even a Rickey divided is better than these 2 losers. Hell I’d rather have him activate himself real quick and bat with RISP instead of A-Rod!
Haha. The Yankees are pathetic….way to fall down, Captain!!
I guess Giambi growing his mustache back will solve everything.
A-Rod – he produces runs, plays good 3b, won 2 MVPs so far – give him a break. if the Yanks didn’t sign him and went into the season w/Betemit or one of the other mediocre alternatives, the Yanks would be 15 games back.
he’s made some nice defensive plays, baserunning, etc. he does much more than a guy like Giambi, who’s D stinks, who can’t run, etc.
Arod doesnt belong here- he cannot handle it here, no shame, but perhaps they can make a trade and get Arod to leave. They could only send him to LA or Anaheim or maybe the Cubs. With the Cubs theres nothing they can send us that would fit. Same with the Dodgers.
the only other move is to not make Arod the go to guy. Get some comparable bats in the lineup take Arod out of the “pressure” area, bat Arod 2, or 5
It’s terrible to be in the 5th inning losing by one run and have to worry that you can’t give up another run or you probably will lose the game.
GRR!!!!!
Bring Up Hideki now. We need to get him in this order. There’s no need for him to find out if he can play in the minors. We know he can play give us whatever he has left.
Why is people on this site blaming Giambi and only Giambi? So A-Rod sucks because of Giambi I guess? Stop defending this fool already. I wish he would wave that 10 year hiatus no trade clause and we eat whatever money that needs to be eaten and trade his ass to a national league team!
A-Rod is a joke. I’ve been watching him fail in these situations for too long now.
Giambi, I won’t go there.
Maybe if they lose today, sit Arod. Sit him.
Remember the “great communicator” Torre got so frustrated with Arod in playoffs that he batted him 8th, we could understand that
im so disgusted i can hardly watch this game anymore
Well, it’s officially football season. See you guys next year, hopefully we can make some shrewd off season moves, and be competitive next year. Spring training is only 6 months away! Go STEELERS!!!!!
They need to bat Hideki 4th.. he will hit 280 or better with RISP..
problem with that 4th inning:
arod trying to hit grand slam
giambi no longer on roids
Can’t blame ARods struggles on his personal problems. Other than last year (contract year) when has this guy ever been clutch? It isn’t like we’ve never seen this before in previous years. For the Yankees to sign this guy for the obscene amount of money they did is a total joke. Don’t Cashman and the decision makers watch the games? For this guy to be the highest paid player in the game yet fail so miserably in the clutch is really hard to understand. It’s obvious the guy succumbs to pressure because most times in these situations he gets himself out swinging at bad pitches and letting good ones go for strikes.
““The Yankees are on a pace to score 774 runs. They scored 968 last season. Oh, Kevin Long was the hiting coach last season.â€
torre was there and he has very strong feelings about a hitting philosophy, and mattingly was also there.
so this is long’s first year alone.
it might have been torre’s and mattingly’s approach that led to the 968 runs last year, and long’s approach that led to the 774 this year.”
It was definitely Mattingly and Bowa’s approach that led to the team’s hitting success last year. They always hit well under Mattingly, and now it’s like all the important things they did well when he was here (especially working counts and waiting for your pitch to hit) have just disappeared. Theyve reverted to the exact opposite this year, which to me is fairly compelling evidence that Long was just a figurehead in 07.
Aside from last season, 1 season out of 5 already this guy A-Rod sucks. He fails miserably in clutch spots!
How phenomenal has Ponson been for the Yankees? I almost feel bad for him that he ended up with the kind of team playing behind him at this point in time.
A-Rod’s a great player, but he just doesn’t act as if he’s there to win, rather just to rack up the stats so one day he can move on and say, “I got the records and the dough.” I don’t believe players are particularly “clutch” but you have to be kidding me. Just make contact for goodness sake.
Gotta feel for Ponson too, he’s pitched surprisingly well for the Yankees and right now he’s more deserving of $25 million a year than A-Rod.
You know what they should do… Bat Ponson for Giambi. Ponson has much more of an interest in winning this game than Giambi, so maybe he can translate that into offense. I’m tired of seeing Giambi going up there being god awful. He should be batting 8th if he’s even playing.
Got to give big ups to Sir Sid – but he’s done his job since he got here. Whatever his issues, he’s kept it real and performed.
Matsui always hit in the clutch. Hes a gamer, because he doesnt have the flash or spotlight he gets overlooked.
He was pushed in the batting order behind some of the current pretenders. You dont know what you got until you lose it.
If Matsui was here they`d be at least 4 games better in the last two weeks. If he batted in Arods spot last inning the Yanks are on the board
All kidding aside Cash should put together a ridiculous package for Greinke hes the real deal.
Sir Sid is the f’n man. I really feel seriously awful for him. The funny part is that he thought he was leaving Texas to join a team of winners. Little did he know!
I said it a week or so ago and i will say it again, the Yankees wasted money resigning ARod. This is nothing against ARod but as bad as this team has been, that $30 million could be spent elsewhere. ARod’s production at the plate and his defense in the field has not been worth that kind of money.
$30 million should buy you more than an extra 5 wins.
Here’s an idea. Since AROD is absolutely abysmal with RISP, why not move him out of that spot and put NADY in there? he’s only your hottest hitter on the team. nah. that would be too simple. Better yet, since Arod seems to like hitting when no one is even close to being on base, why not bat him lead off. Maybe torre had it right batting him 8th.
at this point id rather have michael kay batting clean up than arod
“A-Rod’s a great player, but he just doesn’t act as if he’s there to win, rather just to rack up the stats so one day he can move on and say, “I got the records and the dough.†I don’t believe players are particularly “clutch†but you have to be kidding me. Just make contact for goodness sake.”
Absolutely.
“Got to give big ups to Sir Sid – but he’s done his job since he got here. Whatever his issues, he’s kept it real and performed.”
I agree I crapped on this guy since he got here but he has given a solid effort on any real team he would have 3-5 more wins.
Let’s see what Cano does here!
What else could we ask from Ponson, he’s a #5 guy, #4 tops and he’s dealing with zippo run support.
Al I can’t start watching football yet, I’m seriously stressed out about closing out the Stadium on a 6-game losing streak and maybe the city will have a riot!
The offense malice will be corrected only after Matsui comes back and that may be nearer. With Matsui back, the lineup will be:
Damon
Jeter
Abrue
ARod
Matsui
Nady
Giambi
Will it be too late? Time will tell.
“it might have been torre’s and mattingly’s approach that led to the 968 runs last year, and long’s approach that led to the 774 this year.”
Hahahahahahahahahahah…do you actually believe this? wow.
Better get use to A-Rod folks. We signed him to an untradeable contract.
I miss Matsui badly, even though I have officially given up on this team.
The only thing to look forward to is Moose potentially winning 20 but since his team can’t hit for $ hit how’s he gonna get WINS?
Cano hit a bullet– its not him.
The cleanup hitter has to hit cleanup
Cano bats 7th
Whiff (Cano’s bat)
August 16th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I said it a week or so ago and i will say it again, the Yankees wasted money resigning ARod. This is nothing against ARod but as bad as this team has been, that $30 million could be spent elsewhere. ARod’s production at the plate and his defense in the field has not been worth that kind of money.

I agree 200 percent. No way in HELL Arod lives up to that contract. NOBODY can live up to that kind of contract. Yankees and Hank are idiots for giving him that contract.
If Girardi somehow keeps his job ALL of his coaches gotta go, maybe Eiland stays ditch Meachem, and all the other lackluster turds that comprise this team.
this is just pathetic. please dfa some players, ie giambi and irod.
OMG THAT DOUBLE PLAHY WAS AROD AND LONG’S FAULT – FIRE THEM THEY SUCK DFA AROD AND TRADE HIM FOR MANNY RAMIEREZ OMG
I’m not sure if Greinke is that good today or the Yankees are just that bad. I’m leaning towards the Yankees are just that bad.
This team is painful to watch
I totally called that GIDP. Pretty pathetic that I am right about double plays and K’s more often than I am right about hits and runs…
Al from BK, Greinke’s got enough issues as it is, he’d be crushed in NY 1st time he had back-2-back bad outings. There are at least 50,000 people here who’d try to mess his head up for life just for fun. If he & his agent are smart, he’ll have a nice lucrative career hiding in friendly little places like KC or Cinci. Or go home to Florida where nobody goes to the games anyway.
Josh Hamilton is the only reason Greinke’s not the human-interest story of the year. Both of those guys, for their own survival, need to stay a long way away from NY & Boston.
the 1-0 lead should just be considred 10,000-0
Interesting article, Jennifer, thanks for sharing. She said exactly what I thought when Melky was sent down – It should have been Cano.
I’m not sure how much the contract he got has to do with anything – but I don’t see them giving a contract to a player so early again. Which would be a good thing.
I think Joe should do something, anything to shake up the lineup, show he has some effect on the game. Easy to say this now, but I was not for the change from Torre to Girardi. I’m rooting like heck for Girardi and the Yankees, but other than bullpen management I don’t see any real benefit of the new Joe over the old Joe.
DFox – you never know but it seems like the Yankees make every pitcher look good.
I am itching for football.
BBfan,
I disagree. The Yankees management never really respects Matsui. They will bat Damon
Jeter
Abreu
Arod
Giambi
Nady
Matsui
they`ll bat him 7th when he should bat 4 or 5
my order
Damon
Arod
Nady
Matsui
Jeter
Giambi
Cano
How is it possible that we are here actually contemplating being shut out 1-0? (well, now possibly 2-0). But the point has to do with the inability to get any runs.
This is like a total out-of-body experience.
i’m a glutton for this. i can’t believe i tuned in. the curse of being a yankees fan. this must be the sports gods paying me back for the giants superbowl. this is a team without any life.
when’s that favre guy on?
The feeling I take away from watching the Yankees is that a lot of the guys are just there for themselves, as I said before about A-Rod. There is no chemistry whatsoever. If there’s an opportunity to score, the next guy will come up and scratch any chance they have of moving the run in.
I’m pulling for Matsui to come back. He is the unsung hero of the Yankees his entire time here and has perhaps one of the greatest swings I have ever seen. If his knees hold up, the guy could DH until he is 45. If this team ever has a chance of coming back, Matsui needs to be in the lineup and soon because if it’s one guy that hits when it matters most, it’s Matsui.
When did you think a 5 hitter giving up 1 earned run would be a bad outing for a pitcher, in terms of it meaning a loss.
Baseball is just amazing.
Too bad Nady isn’t in RF, he would have had a good chance to throw Teahen out. Abreu’s arm isn’t bad per se but it also isn’t what it used to be. Why would you not play the best arm in right especially when it is still an unknown quantity to most AL teams?
Teahen made it a moot point with his baserunning blunder, but still. This team needs all the help it can get right now. Let Nady get some time in right!!
With the way Yankees’ offense is going, Ponson better not to give up the second run.
DFA Giambi after this game. That’ll get everyones attention.
“Al from BK, Greinke’s got enough issues as it is, he’d be crushed in NY 1st time he had back-2-back bad outings. There are at least 50,000 people here who’d try to mess his head up for life just for fun. Josh Hamilton is the only reason Greinke’s not the human-interest story of the year. Both of those guys, for their own survival, need to stay a long way away from NY & Boston.”
I agree man, I was just throwing that out I like his stuff a lot but he obviously doesn’t have it put together enough to survive here.
The Yankees have a good team, it’s just that they are playing horribly sloppy…and it’s not the pitching at fault.
The Yankees bats just have not been clutch this year. Twice in the past 16 hours Giambi has fumbled with the bases loaded in very clutch spots. A-Rod hasn’t been MVP-like. Jeter has been very streaky this year.
It’s the offense to blame, really. If they don’t get their act together, they gotta do something over the off-season to liven up that lineup. I thought the Melky move would stir some runs, but I guess not.
“With the way Yankees’ offense is going, Ponson better not to give up the second run.”
This offense is so putrid that I wouldn’t be surprised if YES showed him flipping coolers and kicking the bench after giving up just the first run. Yankees pitchers have to throw 2 hit shutouts to keep us in the game.
This is definitely the sports gods paying us back for the Giants’ amazing victory. Right now I would rather have Justin Tuck batting 5th than Giambi!
“when’s that favre guy on?”
At 7 on CBS.
Does Joe have anyone up in the pen? I love Sidney but he has really had to bear down to keep it to one run. He could be getting tired?
2 run lead. Might as well be 10 runs.
Hold on to your seats!!!
AROD will never move out of that cleanup spot cause the yanks won’t allow it. if they did that, they would be admitting that they made a HUGE mistake by giving him that contract.
Nady could be a gazillion times better than AROD with RISP but that won’t matter. The only thing the yankee front office cares about are the amount of home runs he hit and the amount of tickets he sells. never mind that fact that he is doing nothing in the 4 spot.
Look Yankees! Is it a bird? A plane? No it’s a sac fly!
why dont we just hit nady in the cleanup spot and drop a-rod to the 6 hole? im tired of watching his feeble attempts to knock in runners. the ghost of babe ruth is laughing at this prettyboy as we speak.
Okay since I have nothing better to do, I think I’ll call for the 7th inning to be the Yankees inning to get some runs.
Also, for those of you who are waiting for other sports to being, imagine those of us whose only sport interest is baseball – Yankee baseball.
Yeah, intense.
I hope that the Yankees were watching – that’s what you do with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs!
With the way the Yankees offense (or lack of it) is today, that run may have sealed the game.
As a Jets fan also, at least I have Favre and the Jets to look forward to.
“i’m a glutton for this. i can’t believe i tuned in. the curse of being a yankees fan. this must be the sports gods paying me back for the giants superbowl. this is a team without any life.”
I have to watch this crap and I don’t even like the Giants. Hey at least Mr. Wrangler jeans is now my QB that somewhat makes up for this poop picasso that plays at 161st and River.
“He could be getting tired?”
Sir Sid’s getting tired alright….tired of pitching for such a crappy offensive team! can’t say I blame him.
i pooped a better team this morning after my coffee
THAT’S THE FREAKING WAY TO DO IT SIDNEY!
a sacrifice with the bases loaded.. I have never seen that done..
I am starting to really think Arod is just a chocker and it is more then luck..
Giambi just sucks, high OBP and that is it.. They need Matsui SUnday, Damon to CF, and gardner on the bench…Matsui full time DH..
over 1 lessrun a game then last year…WOW..
“Also, for those of you who are waiting for other sports to being, imagine those of us whose only sport interest is baseball – Yankee baseball.
Yeah, intense.”
I’m very sorry Trish. Its ok, hotstove time is just around the corner.
These games would feel much better if the starting pitchers were going out and getting shelled. That way you could say they had no chance. When they keep getting good starts and loosing, it’s difficult to accept.
Ponson is pitching a good game. If the Yankees loose it is not on him. You would think that the Yanks could score at least 3 runs against the Royals who had lost 7 of 8 and 3 in a row coming into the Stadium.
Man, watching my Heat beat the crap out of the Knicks at the Garden on Opening Night can’t possibly come quick enough. Right now I would rather be watching an Earl Barron highlight reel from this past 15-win season than this game.
“I’m very sorry Trish. Its ok, hotstove time is just around the corner.”
Thanks Al. And that what keeps me going until pitchers and catchers report.
This team will get shut out today 4-0.
Marte and the bullpen will give up 2 more runs. Mo won’t have to come out and embarrass himself any longer because there will no reason for a save.
Just no chance they will come back on the Royals.
“Man, watching my Heat beat the crap out of the Knicks at the Garden on Opening Night can’t possibly come quick enough. Right now I would rather be watching an Earl Barron highlight reel from this past 15-win season than this game.”
Dude I’m a Knicks fan and I’ll be right there rooting with you I want that number 1 pick!
Nice contribution, Ian Nobody.
This might be the easiest RISP run they can ever have. ANY base hit scores him. Even an infield single might.
if we had to compare gardner to arod today, gardner would look like babe ruth
Steinbrenner and Cashman are complete idiots for giving A-rod a 10 yr. deal. Now we are cursed and stuck with this selfish clown
I bet my mother can pitch against the Yankees and win, and she’s got arthritis!!!
Ponson goes 6 innings and gives up 2 runs and he has no chance to win because the worst offense in baseball fails to show up again.
Disgusting.
At this point, its pointless to play these guys anymore. Since they can’t hit, bench them.
Play Ransom at third tomorrow. Just DFA Giambi, he’s a waste of a roster spot at this point. He can head back to Vegas to begin partying. He has already checked out on this season. Call up Miranda to play first and spend the rest of the year playing AAA and AA kids. You might as well find out if some of these minor league guys can play. We already know the major league guys can’t.
At least you will see effort from them.
Make Arod, Cano and the rest of this underachieving bunch reserve players the rest of the year.
They don’t like it? Too damn bad. They can always retire if they choose. They will shut up and be reserves the rest of the year. They like money too much to make waves.
At some point, you have be professional and at least TRY to do something different in run producing situations. They refuse to do it, so its time for them to sit for the rest of the year.
I don’t have todays game, perhaps thats a good thing. How many runs do the Royals have and what inning is it? I’m gathering the Yankees have zilch
You know, I’d agree that these guys are all selfish except for one thing: It makes no sense that they’re only in it for the stats, for their next contract, whatever, and then to proceed to utterly fail in run-scoring opportunities which, if successfully executed, would pad their stats and make them even more valuable on the free agent market or to the Yankees.
What does it say about a team when Sidney Ponson is the shining light of the game. Poor Ponson, he really learned his lesson this year about keeping his yap shut. He should land on his feet nicely next year though.
here comes the RISP clueless corp.
Why no bunt by Damon?
they do not ever get productive outs.. this team cannot situational hit at all…
they are 4th in OBP but like 11th in runs scored..
I really wish Ponson would go to the media after the game and rip into this offense. that would be immensely AwEsome and extremely entertaining. Might as well try to fire this offense up somehow.
You know what, Gardner should just break for home here. Who cares?? Just try to steal a run.
Agreed re Josh Hamilton and Greinke – fine young players, great human interest stories and impossible not to root for them (except when they play the Yankees lol). But New York would devour them whole, which would be tragic. Better for them to stay where they are or in other equally low-key environments.
(yankee fans now gather and pray for a wild pitch)
Absolutely just going through the same thought processes and then Kay articulated them. How does Johnny not get Gardner moved over? A deep out does it!
Oh well, there is my answer.
Disappointing.
they did not bunt Damon because he has been there most clutch hitter all year..
how did his bunt work out last night???
LOL SJ44 = stoopid 13 year old crybaby LOL
This team is a disgrace to the stadium and a disgrace to the uniform. Release Cano, Abreu, Melky, Rasner.
I’m almost glad I can’t see this.
“Ponson goes 6 innings and gives up 2 runs and he has no chance to win because the worst offense in baseball fails to show up again.
At least you will see effort from them.”
They refuse to do it, so its time for them to sit for the rest of the year.”
Couldn’t agree more, A-rod and Giambi are absolutely pathetic heartless trash at this point. $50 mil between these 2 and they cant drive in a run to save their frickin yachts.
“they did not bunt Damon because he has been there most clutch hitter all year..
how did his bunt work out last night???”
What bunt last night?
our top 5 hitters are reputation only..
the bottom line is they are not that good…
leadoff double with a fst guy at 2nd they get zilch.
bases loaded zero outs are big boys up they get zilch.
maybe there big boys just SUCK….they are pathetic….
“You know what, Gardner should just break for home here. Who cares?? Just try to steal a run.”
I’m 100% with you there.
I hope Ponson doesn’t end up blaming himself like he did last game. (“I didn’t do my job. If I put up zeroes we would still be playing.”)
How sad is that? You have to think you need to put up zeroes to do your job????
Yeow.
wow so many dumbass comments in here…
he tried to bunt in the 9th or that is what sterling said on the radio.. he failed a few times then christian got picked off…
Well thats the ballgame (and the season in a nutshell) folks. If Damon and Abreu can’t get a run in, I certainly dont expect the weak, soft heart of the order (excluding Nady) to do so.
At this point the Yankee offense makes the Blue Jays and the Mariners look good. Are we statistically the worst offense in the AL yet? It certainly seems that way from watching every day!
This team has been cursed, and completely hopeless.
When will our offense wake up?
SJ44, except for A-Rod (who I will not pile on – the man busts his behind and plays every game), I’m fine with what you said. Jeter never phones in anything either – he just hasn’t executed. So, except for those two, it’s fine with me. Oops, and Nady as well.
Hopefully Phil will pitch well tomorrow and then will be ready to come back up. He’ll be fun to watch, especially as he seems like he’s his old self. Outside of Phil, that’s it in the fun department. I’d rather watch paint dry than watch this team.
they did not bunt Damon because he has been there most clutch hitter all year..
You are losing 2-0, with a chance to cut the score to 1 run, using 2 more AB’s. That is just stupid to bank on him getting a hit. Play fundamental baseball and manufacture runs. THAT is why Damon should have bunted.
It is blind faith like that, damon being clutch, that leads to losing streaks and losing games. This is not about the statistics over the season, it is about winning games. Statistics are used as a guide but understanding baseball should be the managers decision. Obviously he failed there.
And for those who hate Girardi you have to feel for the guy since he has to sit there and watch the stuff happen and then have the press descend on him like vultures. Not every move he makes is a bad move.
“This team is a disgrace to the stadium and a disgrace to the uniform. Release Cano, Abreu, Melky, Rasner.”
Yeah that would really solve all our problems.
I know that the bunt failed horribly last night, but today was the perfect situation to do it. A guy on second with great speed and no outs. Damon is the lead-off hitter and should bunt from time to time. Jeter was up next and he’s been hitting well lately.
“he tried to bunt in the 9th or that is what sterling said on the radio.. he failed a few times then christian got picked off…”
He didn’t even foul a pitch off.. Both strikes were borderline pitches that you couldn’t bunt. One pitch was below the knees.
How does Johnny not get the runner over? Because nobody has done it all year. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. Too many 8 figure salaried guys who won’t do the little things to win games. Its been that way all year. Its why “selfish” is an apt description of this bunch.
Now, the team is so uptight and know they suck with RISP, its almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. They all try to do too much and the failure continues. Its a vicious and its not going to end anytime soon.
Nobody on this team is willing to sacrifice their own numbers for the good of the team.
They won’t do it now because its all about compiling personal stats for these guys now. They know they have no shot at the playoffs so, its all about their numbers.
That’s why I say play the minor league guys the rest of the way. Use Arod, Cano and the rest of these underachievers to fill in when guys need rest, a pinch runner, etc.
You want to get players’ attention? Take away their playing time.
If you roll out the same guys everyday, you can’t be surprised at the same (non)results.
Well, one more loss ain’t gonna hurt. Que importa un cadaver mas si el cementerio esta lleno!
Ponson is was pitching too good of a game, Girardi called in Marte to blow KCs lead wide open
I hope Ponson doesn’t end up blaming himself like he did last game. (â€I didn’t do my job. If I put up zeroes we would still be playing”)
Awwwww, he actually said that? Poor guy! He deserves so much better than this crappy team!
This move makes sense… Not. Marte has been awful. If these two runs don’t score I’ll be shocked. Should have left Ponson in. He was able to wiggle out of jams all day, might as well let him try, because chances are they aren’t overcoming the 2 run deficit anyway.
E man I can’t see where pitches are thrown thru the radio.. Just what sterling says.
Bunting today for Damon is an option.. Why Sj44 would the #’1 for Arod and Jeter and Damon matter? WHat it will affect Damons contract in 2 yrs., arods in 9 or Jeters.. I think that may be a little simplistic…
I get the frustration, I’m there. But overreaction while incredibly therapeutic isn’t exactly leading to reasonable perspective for what needs to change either.
you can’t bunt down 2 runs this late in the game, especially w/the leading hitter in the league. gotta play for the runs, those i think are your best odds of winning, as ultimately you need at least 3 runs to win
Every dawn is a new beginning…
GO DAMASO!
The Yankees should have learned a lot of painful lessons.
1.) Don’t give players in their early to mid-30s long term contracts.
2.) Don’t ever let Melky Cabrera set foot in CF unless it’s as a late inning replacement.
3.) Robinson Cano doesn’t have the heart, passion or baseball IQ to be a All-Star caliber player.
4.) The team needs a first baseman who can both hit and field the position adequately.
5.) Stop trying to plug holes in a dam. It’s broken. At this point the Sexons, Ponsons, Martes, Pudges etc. are just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
marte should be pitching to only 1 guy? is that accurate?
I know its easy to target A-Rod now and rightfully so but his career as a yankee is very predictable allow me to explain.
2003- His final year in Texas on a bad team(no pressure) he has these numbers: .298 BA 47 HR 118 RBI Wins AL MVP
2004- His first Year in Pinstripes(more pressure big city etc.)here are the numbers: .286 BA 36HR 106RBI
2005- Second year as a Yankee(less pressure because his previous year was so awful and the media lets up a bit)here are the numbers: .321 BA 48 HR 130 RBI Wins AL MVP
2006- Year after winning MVP he is defending his crown(more pressure)here are the numbers: .290 BA 35 HR 121 RBI
2007- Year following a below average season falling off from his 05 MVP production(less pressure)here are the numbers: .314 BA 54 HR 156 RBI wins AL MVP
2008- Year after his best season ever and 3rd AL MVP(more pressure)here are the numbers thus far: .312 BA 27 HR 72 RBI
Those are some interesting trends IMO. Let me know what you think.
I would rather watch Trampoline Gymnastics than this team!
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE! Can someone bring me up to speed about how Brett Gardner has played today? Any good catches? Throws?
There we go thats the Marte we know and love!
Marte got jobbed.
There’s Marte’s usual walk, but to be fair, this time it wasn’t his fault.
Marte had him 0 and 2 and failed again..
the lefty relief problem continues it has been like 7 years and they cannot find a decent lefty relieveer, it is mind boggling.. Marte should be better he has teahan 0 and 2 and walked another batter
this team needs an excorsim.
Oh look! Ball four Bruney is coming in!
was ball four a strike????
So now we hope that Bruney finds a way to overpower them, keep the ball on the ground in the infield, or work a K. In other words, no deep fly outs, no basehits, and certainly nothing over the wall.
At this point we know Girardi likely isn’t going to be sitting his whole crew. So if your offense isn’t getting it done, why not change your batting order.
Oh well.
SJ44-
Agree with letting the minor leaguers get more playing time. Only drawback to that, if they do poorly, like Kennedy, then we’ve lost a trading chip.
Our team is toast and I don’t yet know if Marte got out of a bases loaded jam.
Time to put guys like Abreu on waivers and see if we can trade for some useful minor leaguers.
Stuart,
Yes. Bad call. Still had him 0-2 and should have finished him but, he got jobbed on Ball 4.
our pitching stinks
Stuart – ball four was a strike.
Ball four was definitely a strike, Stuart. Another pitch could have been a strike, as well, on the outside part of the plate, if Wally Bell’s strike zone dictated it, but it didn’t.
SJ44 is a tool
“Those are some interesting trends IMO. Let me know what you think.”
If the trend continues we should get a great production from him next year
guillen 277 with RISp we would kill for arod or giambi to have that #
This team is AWFUL, Pathetic, what ever word you want to use to say the word stinks!!
Bases loaded no outs, you don’t score!! Bobby send’em home Meachem holds Damon at third when the team never scores!! What in the world was he thinking!!
That would’ve been a great moment in the game if anyone in the stadium actually felt the Yankees were capable of scoring 3 runs.
Ponson is a great pitcher, on any other team that has figured out how to score runs, say the Washington Nationals or the Toledo Mud Hens, he would be a 20 game winner.
Ponson is a great pitcher, on any other team that has figured out how to score runs, say the Washington Nationals or the Toledo Mud Hens, he would be a 20 game winner.
Gee that was nice.
Brett I totally disagree with you that our pitching stinks.
Mi madre, que leche!!!
Probably about all the times he’s been killed for sending runners? lol
arod absolutly sucks. this team will never win wit that loser on the team. he gets smaller and smaller as the situation gets bigger and bigger.
and we’re stuck with that loser headcase for 9 more years!
best player in baseball?!?! he’s maybe the 4th best player on this team.
if i had to choose my 3b for the one big game, id take scott brosious EVERY TIME!!!
I have noticed the same thing about A-Rod, Al. Great seasons in odd numbered years, struggles in the clutch in even numbered years. It’s kind of a disturbing trend for the best player in baseball to be so back and forth, but it’s also the reason why as frustrated as I am with him this year, I will not jump on the “release or trade” bandwagon. Nobody will be saying that next year, guaranteed.
was the ball hit hard???
this team is torturing us but if you assume the worse it gets easier to deal with..
at lest gardner got a double, did he hit it with any authority or just a bloop??
cheerful reading for anyone on the ledge:
http://findarticles.com/p/arti.....tBody;col1
Bret sucks and got a lucky groundball.
“I have noticed the same thing about A-Rod, Al. Great seasons in odd numbered years, struggles in the clutch in even numbered years. Thanks for the agreeance I believe we are looking at a huge 09 from A-Rod in the new ballpark.
Did Kay just say that Wang had surgery? I don’t think he did.
It’s going to be weird to listen to the announcers try to pump urgency into the games when they’re meaningless. Kay keeps saying “it’s a big moment in the game”, but it’s hard to get really excited about it at this point. We’re basically watching a meaningless game against the Kansas City Royals. (not to be a downer or anything)
Arod is not the best player so why use that line.. Pujols is twice the player Arod is..
“best player in baseball?!?! he’s maybe the 4th best player on this team.”
Other than Mo, who on this team is a better baseball player than A-Rod? Sure he’s been sucking lately, but so has just about everyone else so let’s not get this twisted.
Could we actually score here?
Can they move him over now????
OK arod on second with noone out. How are the yanks going to find out a way to not score this inning, Anyone?
Giambi can pad his runners left in scoring position stat here.
two errors one play ….nice
Brett got a double? I am sorry I missed it! I was at the movie theatre.
Did the crowd give Brett a standing ovation when he got the double and do they love him? Yeah Trisha the pitching proved me wrong oops!
gotta agree, astats is the greatest player of all time at getting stats, but when it comes to winning, he cant carry scott brosious’s jock.
A-Rod will turn it around this season–just as soon as the Yanks are mathematically eliminated.
With any other team you would be thinking the home team was going to win this game since KC had some GREAT oportunities and couldn’t capitalize on them…
they have the shift on?
So… the Yankees are pretty bad I hear..
The problem this year is situational hitting and hitting with RISP. I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Hitting with RISP is fluid from year to year. I think the Yankees could be much improved at it next year with little change in the lineup.
HOWEVER the situational hitting is a huge problem too. These guys don’t move runners over, hit sacrifice flys, etc. Every time up they are trying to mash home runs. The offensive philosophy of this team is to take lots of walks and hit homers. They can’t score if they aren’t hitting a lot of bombs.
I think the entire hitting philosophy needs to change in the offseason. That means getting rid of Giambi, Abreu, Melky and picking up some good players that know how to handle the bat. I like building a team around having a huge OBP but at the same time you need to be able to move runners over, get runs on groundouts and sac flys, limit strikeouts, hit with RISP, start runners to stay out of the double play, etc, etc.
Its time to go back to the drawing board and build a team with good fundamentals. Pitching, defense, smart at-bats.
The ransom era begins!
If Girardi spends the next 20 years coaching second-tier teams – like Casey Stengel did pre-Yankees – he may get it together enough to come back and do a good job with the Yankees. He’s intelligent, and works hard, but he’s not a natural; he needs experience — with what works, and what doesn’t, when to play hunches, and when not to. Also, coming back as an older man I think he will have acquired a certain air of authority in the clubhouse that I suspect he currently lacks, to his and the team’s detriment.
The manager can’t be the player’s pal – Casey Stengel learned that by the time he got to the Yankees, which is why he had the rep – charming as he could be when he wanted to – of being a rather cold-blooded b*st*rd.
I get the feeling, too, that Theo Epstein is a cold-blooded b*st*rd, far more so than Cashman anyway, which I think is part of the reason why he’s more successful than Cashman.
“Arod is not the best player so why use that line.. Pujols is twice the player Arod is..”
Sometimes some of the people on this board are as trendy and fairweather as a bunch of teenagers. Last year when Pujols was banged up and A-Rod was mid tour of dominance nobody would have said Pujols was better. Certainly not “twice the player A-rod is.” 20 bucks says never in a million years do you make that statement 365 days ago. Why do some fans have such short memories?
giambi would not be bad if ; he was making $7 mill., he could run, he could field, and was not fragile and could play everyday. They actually have to carry 2 more players because of his limitations.
You know, when you’re going bad…
Nady seems to be catching on to the system.
Chances of Cano swinging at the first pitch?
bbb
yeah he had a great year in his contract year. great as in exactly what he needed to max out his new contract, not great as far as winning. unfortunatly, it will be 8 more years till his next contract year and he’ll be 39, and we’ll still have 26 championships.
Don’t Worry, Cano to save the day!!
ruh roh, somebody better go quarantine X. The GIDP-itosis is starting to rub off on him too!
Cant believe theyre gonna not score AGAIN here, jebus.
“In play, out(s)”
I’m really beginning to despise seeing that.
this is a battle of who can hit worse with RISP.
Greinke has 4 hit the Yankees and shut them out.
that is funny. Seriously, Yankees baseball is the best sitcom on TV these days.
Hey guys Cano is terrible lets cut him.
a lucky hit for cano. Still hate the dude. But good on him
OMG they scored a run!!!!!!!!! and a pig just flew by my window!
Hey, SJ44, why do the trolls on this site give you such a hard time? You’re far more tolerant of stupidity than I am.
I do disagree with you, btw, about Buck Showalter. I thought he was a very overrated manager. He destroyed Wettleland’s confidence; he completely overlooked Rivera; he let starter destroy their arm, famously letting Cone throw 142 pitches, after which he developed an aneurysm.
He might be a better evaluator of talent; I don’t know.
But if the Yankees are going to appoint a Czar to review everyone, I think I have more faith in Gene Michael.
However, I don’t know how closely Michael has followed the game the past few years, but I trust his discretion and his judgment.
He came so close.
Nice job Robby.
““In play, out(s)â€
I’m really beginning to despise seeing that.”
Especially when you know that 6 times out of 10, it will indeed be outs, as in plural.
But wait…what’s this I see?! A run scoring hit with a man on 3rd? For extra bases even?! Could it be?!?!
Kay is really excited, but we are still losing.
I love the excitement at scoring the first run of the game in the 7th inning vs. KC….
And even though he got to 3rd, nice dog job by Cano out of the box…
Good show Robi!!
It would be nice if Pudge found a way to come through.
Wow….Grienke pulling his best Mariano with the WP…
where was it hit guys? give me some details, please..
they tied it up…i can’t believe it
Cano NEEDED that hit. And the Yankees needed that wild pitch.
They should have held Cano at 3rd, that move was too risky.
Thank you God!
Well you might remember I called for the 7th to be our scoring inning!
Of course the tying run would score on anything but a clutch hit.
Yes BBB, the out(s) with brackets have been especially accurate this year.
Que leche sin Melky! Without their errors where would we be?
“bbb
yeah he had a great year in his contract year. great as in exactly what he needed to max out his new contract, not great as far as winning. unfortunatly, it will be 8 more years till his next contract year and he’ll be 39, and we’ll still have 26 championships.”
This logic would hold more water if he had only had great seasons in contract years and below-average seasons in all non contract years. But that hasn’t been the case at all, it has been every odd numbered season where he’s performed extremely well.
how are the Yanks going to blow this game today?/
can they win a close game for once….
greinke over 100 pitches also..
it was hit to left field and deep but robinson is very lucky that it was not caught
stuart, Cano’s triple was up the alley in right center field, it hit off the wall right in front of the right field bleachers on the fly and bounced away from Teahen and DeJesus.
Okay. It would be nice if we could go ahead, but I’m happy that we tied it at least.
Seriously, what can Pudge do better than Molina? He’s been pathetic so far.
“a lucky hit for cano. Still hate the dude. But good on him”
Clearly you are an idiot. I only need to look at your name to be assured of the fact.
omg-2 runs from the Yanks. Did hell just freeze?
fielding error by the defensive replacement
baseball is a funny game
I love that so many of us are still here, watching the game. Shows that we’re here for better or for worse.
I don’t think my marriage with the Yankees will ever end.
A win feels good every day, whether we have a chance at the playoffs or not.
GARDNER ROCKS!!! TAKE THAT MELKY! MELKY COULD NOT GET TWO HITS IN A GAME!
GO BRETT! OUR FUTURE! woo hoooooo!
Say what you want about Cano, but a few days ago if Cano hit a ball like he did he probably would have been dogging it out of the box or in a homerun pose.
someone tell me what i am seeing here
Stuart, open up gamecast. It will tell you about the plays after they happen. That way you don’t have to keep asking what happened (unless you want something more specific than they display.) But they will tell you if a ball is hit deep, if there is a wild pitch, etc.
gardner pounding the ball up to 167. between catcher and CF this year they have about 12 HRs total and 80 RBI’s or less from 2 positions.
OUCH>>>>>>>>
Haha, at least somebody gets off on Gardner, that lucky groundball hitter!
Greinke has 4 hit the Yankees and shut them out.
Again, say what you want about other no-namers who have shut the Yanks down this season, but Greinke is the goods.
I’d love to have that kid on my team.
And for those who disparage him and have essentially pinned the scarlet letter on him for the issues he dealt with a couple of years ago really have no idea what they’re talking about.
The kid was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. We’re not talking about schizophrenia or something really severe.
Hell, even Donnie Osmond was diagnosed with the very same thing after he’s been in show business for over 20 years.
People overcome it all the time. It’s not nearly as big of a deal as people think.
All that headcase stuff regarding Greinke is completely misguided and ill-informed.
How did Brett Gardner find out about this website? I think he’s making posts on his blackberry while standing on first.
2 hits for Brett today. Could he be starting to break out? He needs to stay up here and play out the rest of the season. I want Miranda up too, as a starter; demote Giambi to Sexson’s former role. SJ44 is absolutely right, this season is for all intents and purposes over and it’s a very opportune time for the young kids to show what they can do. At least it’ll give us one non-Moose related reason to be excited to watch the rest of the games this year.
bbb, once his contract was assured, what did arod do in the PS last year, where it really counts?
I liked the Yanks my whole life. I started with Horace Clark and the gang. I did not know the yanks were ever good until the Munson and Jackson days.
I am a fan regardless of how pathetic they are…
“All that headcase stuff regarding Greinke is completely misguided and ill-informed.”
Yeah it can seriously happen to anyone and is a legitimate disease. Shawn Andrews of the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the top 3 or 4 offensive guards in the NFL, he gets paid tons of money and he was just diagnosed with clinical depression.
Greinke is an awesome pitcher, I wish he was on the Yanks.
Your are right BBB. Brett is coming out and is here to stay.
Any Joba rumors anyone cares to disclose about the likelihood of his returning to the rotation and when?
I’m baffled the Yankees would consider returning him to the bullpen.
I don’t profess to medical expertise.
However, I recall reading reports about the diagnosis and prescription for Papelbon back in 2006 when he suffered a tired arm and rotator cuff tendinitis at season’s end.
Andrews and Co. recommended moving him from a closer to a starter– which is why the Red Sox planned to do as much that year before Spring Training– precisely because relieving placed a greater strain on the arm than starting.
Evidently, working out of the pen, because the work is so erratic, even if only for an inning at a time, strains the arm more than working every fifth day because it’s more constant and enables you to rest four days in between.
don’t bet against the Yankees finishing the season at or below .500…..they are doing their best to finish 3-7 against KC…..KC !!!!!….What a bunch of overpaid underachievers…..well I guess I know what they decided to do….NOT Put UP…..so they just need to SHUT UP !….. SWEPT AT HOME by the ROYALS….TOO DAMN FUNNY !
im with you stuart baby! still got my tom tresh model bat-day bat!
Yeah Grienke is really good. I would love to have him on the Yankees too and I was glad when all that trade talk went around a few weeks back, because before that, I had no idea that what he had was as mild as social anxiety disorder. People did talk about it like it was much more serious so I’m glad the record’s set straight at least on my part. I just hope his younger brother that we drafted (he did sign, right?) turns out to be half as good as him.
Ramon Ramirez is pretty tough too, I wouldn’t mind having him on the Yankees either. Oh wait….who did we trade him for again?
By the way, I wasn’t watching when Gardner hit his double, was it hard hit?
“bbb, once his contract was assured, what did arod do in the PS last year, where it really counts?”
HIs contracty was not locked in til AFTER the postseason.
Why did they use Marte in the 7th? GIrardi could have brought him in the 8th to blow the game wide open.
If Arod is only about the contract how do you explain 2005? or 2003? Why everyone was expecting another spectactular season by Arod I’ll never know….his pattern has been for the last year years Great odd years, Avg even years.
Isn’t it ironic that there are two other $20 Mil+ players and several $15 mil players on the team and they are never expected to ‘carry’ the team like Arod is and pretty much did last year while everyone (except Posada and Jeter struggled).
Hey at least we tied it. Oh my word. What if we are still tied going into the 9th?????
Joking. I actually think that Mo would find a way to hold it. Honest to God I do.
Gotta start to get ready to go out. PLEASE keep the good vibes coming. I want to come back to my laptop and find nothing but good information – and hopefully a Yankee win before 4:00.
(Well 3:55 would actually work since that is when I have to leave.)
GO YANKEES!!!!!
This game reminds me of yesterday.
“Ramon Ramirez is pretty tough too, I wouldn’t mind having him on the Yankees either. Oh wait….who did we trade him for again?”
Shawn Chacon
“All that headcase stuff regarding Greinke is completely misguided and ill-informed.”
It might be, but its any diagnosis of social-anxiety disorder is still a valid reason to be concerned that he wouldn’t survive in New York.
strikes Veras
Seriously? A leadoff walk?
“bbb, once his contract was assured, what did arod do in the PS last year, where it really counts?”
What did the rest of the team do in the PS last year where it really counts? Posada and Abreu had new contracts assured by that point too. What did they do in the PS? Posada and Jeter were way worse than A-Rod iirc.
Also didnt A-Rod hit a late homer in the elimination game? Perhaps if we had better pitching like we used to that homerun would have changed the game like a Brosius shot…
lead off walk…………wtf
they always seem to come back to haunt you especially near the end of the game.
Say what you want, but I think the only pitcher whose stuff was really good against the Yanks was Lester. And despite him being a Sux pitcher, I can’t help liking him.
diva, how did astats do in the PS those years?
“bbb, once his contract was assured, what did arod do in the PS last year, where it really counts?”
Your Arod hate train is starting to run off the rails of facts and into fantasyland.
**In recent memory and a pitcher who is not “established,” such as Roy Halladay.
This game is proof that if Brett hits we will probably win. He is energizing the team all ready like I said.
““Ramon Ramirez is pretty tough too, I wouldn’t mind having him on the Yankees either. Oh wait….who did we trade him for again?â€
Shawn Chacon”
Ouch.
Although Chacon was helpful, once upon a time, for a brief while. At least we didnt trade him for Brown I guess.
I really hope us winning depends on Brett hitting since he doesn’t do that too often.
“Yeah it can seriously happen to anyone and is a legitimate disease.”
The number of baseball players who have committed suicide is not tiny – on average, two active or retired MLB players every 10 years (although the numbers have declined in recent years). Not sure how that compares to the population as a whole.

*Doesn’t depend
“The kid was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. We’re not talking about schizophrenia or something really severe.”
There are people with schizophrenia all around you all the time, GF. And many other mental illnesses as well.
“Your Arod hate train is starting to run off the rails of facts and into fantasyland.”
ok here are the FACTS:
he went 4 for 15 with one rbi (a solo homerun or course)
If I hear one more thing about A-rod sucking im going to lose my mind. He carried the team when they were slumping last year, and he has the best numbers where it counts on the team this year.
“best player in baseball?!?! he’s maybe the 4th best player on this team. NO HE IS THE BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM. the Most HRs, the most RBIs, the most runs, the most hits.best slugging %, and he was injured for 2 weeks of the season. Get off his dick and start criticizing Derek “I hit into double plays” Jeter.
Pretty soon it will be time to bring in tie game specialist Rivera!!
all you astats fans can say about him is he has good stats.
he never wins anything.
social anxiety is a serious problem actually
I don’t think any of us fully appreciated what the impact of losing Jorge would be for this team. Everyone has injuries and I’m not dwelling on all of them, but Posada and Wang trump any others.
I’m actually looking forward to the most dynamic off-season in years if not ever. Lots to debate about Yankees own free agents, trade possibilities and outside FA. I’m trying to maintain some bleief in a WC run this year, but that’s harder and harder to do with each dismal performance by the “offense”.
Skeptic, I’ll ask again…care to post other players’ stats from that same playoff series? Like Jeter and Posada for example? And Giambi, I don’t even wanna know what he did, or didnt do as the case may be.
Also care to post the starting pitcher’s line from that same game in which A-Rod homered? Wang gave the offense a chance to hit meaningful home runs late in the game that night, right?
WOW BBB, I forgot the Yankees traded Ramon Ramirez for Chacon.
Did you know that the Rockies, actually, had designated Chacon for assignment when the Yankees executed that trade?
Can’t blame Cashman b/c the Yankees were desperate in 2005 but that’s a tough one to come back to haunt you.
Gardner is a porqueria!
yeah heres’s some stats about the other players in the PS last year.
none of them made anywhere near the money astats made
none of them bat cleanup
none of them have ever been called the greatest player in the game
“all you astats fans can say about him is he has good stats.
he never wins anything.”
Skeptic, his home run won the game for the yanks on wednesday.
I HAVE social anxiety disorder, it’s not a big deal.
Any time I’m around Red Sux fans, I withdraw and become angry, sullen, and pugnacious.
“Wang gave the offense a chance to hit meaningful home runs late in the game that night, right?”
NO!!!!! Wang gave up 8 in 4 2/3 in Game 1 and 4 in ONE inning in Game 4.
and occasionally violent.
ok girardi, no more experimenting with MO in tie games
robertson or rasner to pitch the 9th.
A-rod didn’t lose the PS for the yanks last year, Wang, Jeter, and Torre lost the PS.
Jesse Abreu has the most RBI’s.
arod better be the best player on the yanks…
jesse,
you’re right he won a game the other day. that makes him the greatsest player the ever played the game, i stand corrected, two clutch hits a month are certainly worth $30M per year and of course relieve you of the pressure of performing in the PS
Kill Schill: Yeah, we can’t blame Cashman for that one cause we really needed Chacon at that time and he did his job. But what we can blame him for, he could have had Ramirez back this offseason. I’m pretty sure Trey Hillman remembered him from their mutual days in our system and went out and got him either off the scrap heap or in a trade for a very nominal return. So that kind of twists the knife in a bit deeper!
Offense better score a run here if for no other reason than so Mo’s not coming into a tie game.
Wow we may need to pinch hit for Ransom.. So many good ptions to choose from, yech..
Off Topic: Usain Bolt is probably the best name for a sprinter ever.
What is A-Rod swinging at??
some people with social anxiety dont leave the house ever so consider yourself lucky
WHAT DOES porqueria MEAN? is that a god thing?
Im not justifying his pay, Im just saying hes a great ball player, who do you guys want at 3rd? Betamit?
here comes ransom. NOOOOOOOOOOO let ransom hit, not automatic out betimt
I actually thought Hillman would have been a better choice than Girardi.
Oy, veh. Not Betemit. Here come a S/O (or a HR.)
“yeah heres’s some stats about the other players in the PS last year.
none of them made anywhere near the money astats made”
Yeah, poor Jeter and Giambi are sooo underpaid. Actually, the Yankees were paying Giambi more last season than they were paying A-Rod because of the Texas contribution. So much for your “stats” huh?
Wang would be the first one to tell you he did not give the team a chance to win the elim. game last year. It’s that simple. Your desperation to blame the whole thing on Alex is really beyond pathetic.
Here comes another K with RISP.
betemit 191 with RISP for the season, I knew he fit in well.
betemit is an elite RBI man
STOP SWINGING FOR THE FENCES!!!!!!!!!!
A-Rod haters (Pete I’m talking to you) take notice of yet another reason why people around the country think we don’t deserve him. This is from ESPN via former teamate Michael Young of the Rangers:
“Young, in contrast, is less a chatter and more an observer by nature. He learned the value of following the right example when he arrived in Texas in 2001 and saw Alex Rodriguez display a blue-collar work ethic despite a $252 million contract.
“Since Alex has gone to New York, people can say this or that about him,” Young said. “But I don’t think I ever saw him take a day off in three years. For a young player, whenever you see veterans out there getting after it, it makes a lasting impression.”
Keep hating on the best player in the game, who may be having a down year with RISP (look at his career numbers, they are fine before this year) but is still respected and revered around the game.
i noticed when astats was just up there with the game on the line in the 8th inning, nobody came on here and posted that they thought he’d double home the winning run. because nobody here thought he would.
i guarantee if this was st louis, just about every last fan would have been expecting some more of albert’s magic.
Novel idea how about a sac fly!!!!!!!!!
think it all, it will happen fly to the out field deep…
Yeah, in terms of baseball acumen alone, I thought Hillman would have been the best choice for manager, but I feared he might have problems handling the media and big market pressure, so I wanted Girardi for that reason. Hillman is one smart dude, though. I bet he’d make a good GM too.
WHAT DOES porqueria MEAN? is that a god thing?
I think it means filth or garbage.
Aww good for A-Rod, showing up and working just like the guys who make a fraction of his contract.
I’m leaving now. (Good job Wilson!) I REFUSE to believe that the Yankees will not plate at least one run here. I REFUSE!
GO YANKEES!
(Prayers are forthcoming. I’m on my way to mass.)
Thank God ……….I really was hoping he wouldn’t hit into a double play.
I said a prayer that he would strike out, a walk is a huge bonus.
Now for X the un-tier!
Come on x-nad
Please get that runner in Nady.
Bases loaded again?
Skeptic, saint louis is in the same position as the yankees, WTF are you talking about?! So if Pujols was on our team we would be 7.5 games behind 1st place instead of 10.5? Big F’n deal.
sacrifice fly……
on a dp ball Betemit needs to go in real hard!!!!!!!
For all of us who wanted Nady in Giambi’s spot…this is it. He’s got the opportunity now to drive in some runs with a clutch hit.
lol @ skeptic. man, thats one bored azz Red Sox fan!
free pass is nice as well
You gotta love how this team writes the book on failure.
Can we please score at least one run?
What a freaking joke, that was right down the middle, straight as an arrow. I bet you’re feeling right at home, Nady!
Nady starting to play like a TRUE 2008 Yankee…way to go, pal….welcome to the club of CHOKERS !
Loaded with one out and we fail to score the winning run….this team is dreadful to watch and at this point I would rather mow the lawn
Stop rooting for us!
It’s actually almost getting comical. Definitely lost the will to continue getting upset about these failures about 2 weeks ago.
Ha, season going down the crapper but at least we will win the most hateful fans in the elage award again.
Seriously, though, we should start blaming those that deserve it. Melky and Cano KILLED this team for the majority of the season. Blaming Arod for struggling this year in late innings is rediculous, it’s a 9 inning game and runs scored in the beginning of the game count just as much as runs scored in the 9th.
Can anybody on this team hit a FB?
some more good AB’s really if it was not true no one would believe how totally inept this team is..
what are they with bases loaded 1 out or less and scoring?
it has to be scary bad..
Of course..
And you know what’s sad, I was not expecting a different outcome of a bases loaded, no-out situation.
We need an obtainable goal….how about the WORST TEAM IN THE MAJORS WITH RISP ????….We have a REAL SHOT at that one….let’s get a runner on 2nd with no outs in the 9th and choke away 3 more times….WE CAN DO IT !!!
looks like the nady love fest has come to an end.
he is an average player.
im starting to think the yankees choking problems have something to do with a sexual fetish on the part of joe girardi or hank steinbrenner.
hank looks like a perv
Edwar! HAHAHAHA
Runners in scoring position. It’s like their bats turn into twigs in those situations.
Yankees are allergic to RISP!!
We need to see Edwar in the 9th.
Do not put MO in there again after he blew it.
Can’t blame Nady there. He can’t be the only player on the team to hit with RISP. At some point someone else has to step up. At least he had a lengthy AB unlike our friend Robbie.
wow if the yanks lose this one they really deserve it. 5 streight outs in bases loaded less than two out situations. two runs because of two errors and a good hit. man this is getting ugg-lee.
Here we go, not Edwar’s day
Josh, in all fairness it was bases load with one out. If it was bases loaded with no out they would have had a 95% chance of blowing it. Bases load with one out there is a 99.9% of the yanks blowing it.
And there goes the game now. It’ll be really cool if we could get swept by the Royals and do so by losing every single game in the 9th inning.
Why are people surprised? This is what the Yankees are. We’re an offensively old team with decent pitching. That’s a .500 team, which is exactly what we’ll finish as.
5 runs in 2 games against the royals. Playoffs?? Uh, what, playoffs? Don’t talk to me about playoffs.
Playoffs?
If they lose this series. I concede all hope this season.
By the way, any chance we can make a trade for DeJesus in the offseason, he’d be a good option for centerfield…
is Edwar going to implode???
U still have hope?
here’s clutch:
avg: .333
w/ runners on: .335
w/ RISP: .293
w/ RISP & 2 out: .340
w/ bases loaded: .333
here’s not clutch:
avg: .311
w/ runners on: .267
w/ RISP: .239
w/ RISP & 2 out: .220
w/ bases loaded: .143
do i even have to tell you who these 2 players are? (hint: one of them is the best player in the game)
Lucky we got him, Pudge always throws to the 3rd base side.
Know what’s sad? I used to get excited, in a weird sort of way, when a Royals vs Devil Rays game came on MLB Extra Innings. I used to liken it to watching the Special Olympics. Well now that is what the Yankees/Royals games have become! Not even just this series but the last one too, it’s a neverending battle of “who can suck more”?
squandered chances ! . . . squandered chances ! . . . squandered chances ! . . .
Can we manage to score one run in this inning please? I do not care how we do it at this point.
You should change your name to broken record. We get it. You don’t like ARod and you’re going to act like an annoying little gnat until someone agrees with you.
Why does it matter to you so much that people don’t agree with you?
“By the way, any chance we can make a trade for DeJesus in the offseason, he’d be a good option for centerfield…”
Um, no, no he wouldn’t. He’s an average hitter, with no speed, doesn’t walk, has an average arm. Basically, he’s Melky Cabrera with a little more talent to put the ball in play and less defensively. I’d rather not go anywhere near him.
I think that is the first runner Pudge has thrown out this year for us.
A Brett Gardner HR to end this one!! Right it down.
MVP for this game is garder. And mark my words the winning run will come offf the bat of gardy
Skeptic who is the other player?
thanks…
I predict Richie Sexon will hit a walkoff HR after he pinch hits for Gardner.
Pudge home run to win it.
K.C. has done their very best job to give this games away but the Yankees are disinterested and will not buy into it.
I’m just not that upset about this game. It’s like, I know I should be, I’ve had my agent tell me that, but I’m not that upset about it. Did we lose? Yes. Do I care? Yes? I don’t know. It’s one of those things that it’s not a big deal, it’s a loss, winning isn’t that important. It’s overrated, it’s more about how you felt afterwards. And I feel fine.
Finally a good move by Girardi bringing in Edwar.
It might be too little too late though.
stuart, the other player is arod
LOL @ isolating one injury shortened season from a 14 year veteran’s career and calling it meaningful in the grand scheme of things. Skeptic’s posts grow more and more desperate with each passing pixel.
Sexson is not on the team
now you bunt.. please bunt.. pinch run the pick off victim
“Pudge home run to win it.”
I meant hit by pitch. Typo.
Now porqueria Gardner can’t bunt!
I know arod is one who is the other I know arod was person 2…
Lousy bunter!
why is irod running. and where is the bunt??????????????????
Girardi, interesting?
Just heard that 6 different Yankees have provided a walk off hit…Damon, Abreu, Giambi, Cano, Gardner, and Molina. Pretty interesting stuff there. Our marquee players, both Jeter and Arod, are not on that list.
Do you think they just didn’t have the opportunity? Or do you think they squandered their opportunities?
pujols
Hey everyone, skeptic is loves poo holes, he doesnt like arod, he loves saint louis and he hates the yankees. Hopefully he stays on this yankees blog for the rest of the season and reminds us how saint louis (who are not going to make the playoffs) are better then the yankees (who are not going to make the playoffs)
Took the bunt off?
He swung cause he can’t bunt!
OMG A great at bat by Gardner! Melky would nevr have a bat that long
walk
Are we the only team in baseball to have not hit a walkoff HR yet?
“I should be the manager of the Yankees.”
~Michael Kay
Ha! Cue silence from the “Gardner is trash” crew!
I’m sure Melky would have taken a walk there…
20 dollars we hit into a DP here
Damn it!
“Are we the only team in baseball to have not hit a walkoff HR yet?”
Giambi did…
Now we can use a bunt if Damon can get one down!
“why is irod running. and where is the bunt??????????????????”
Unconventional, but I like it. Do something crazy. Shake things up!
Why is JC not running for Pudge?
brett gardner is the best bunter on this team buddy. He is also the fasttest.
Molina’s was a walk off HBP.
Squandered opps x 100.
This game should’ve been won long ago.
Yea pujols is as good as I thought.
He makes other terms cringe in fear.. he is the best..
how the hell could brent gardner make it through the yankees minor league system without learning how to bunt?
thats mind-boggling!
Why wouldn’t Joe pinch-run for Pudge with Christian at 2nd base?
I know what happened last night but how bad a mistake can he make at 2nd base.
Christian’s speed neutralized the wheel play.
prediction:
damon will ground out, runners move to 2nd and 3rd
jeter will ground into a force at home
abreu will fly out to deep right.
Yeah bbb these Melky fans are sooooo dumb. They are delusional to!
Girardi with another crazy move. Lucky for him it worked out, but he’s just a pathetic dumbass manager.
And we’ll probably blow this chance too.
I put JC in for Pudge and do the double steal!!!!
that would definitely be a indictment of this offense..
Same thought Zooboy.
Start the runners a line drive = a triple play!
I actually like that play, the pitcher wants to throw it over the plate to get the out and gardner is a contact hitter that goes the other way more often than not
Better learn your centerfielders name it is brett not brent.
Now Damon has got to bunt here. Let Jeter join the walkoff list.
Why isn’t Damon bunting?
How do you not bunt here? Is Girardi napping?
why isnt he bunting?
Wow, this game is so winnable just with fundamentals. Pinch run Christan, Damon should have bunted, Jeter squeezes him in. If they lose it’s because of the managing.
oh, he didnt bunt so he could strike out
This is all on Girardi now. Bunt the f-ing ball already.
Yeah, the Cubs and Brewers have been so terrified by Pujols this season, they’ve already given up their NL Central 2008 division aspirations.
Holy Crap–
is Girardi a Major League manager???
You HAVE to bunt there.
none of our young players can bunt, cano, melky, christian, gardner etc.
what do they teach these kids? austin jackson better master that before he gets promoted to the majors.
So Damon bunts with 1 on and no one out yesterday, but he doesn’t bunt with 2 on and no one out today? Yeah, that makes sense…
holy crap Michael Kay, calm down… our offense is horrendous, and Johnny has pretty much been our best hitter
Great strategy by Girardi the MOJON!
cmon Jeter hit into a double play!
And there is your manager!!!!!!!
Good God get rid of this guy.
put on a damn double steal on, pinch run I m not joking..
ugh how can Damon have swung at a couple of those?
Save us Jeter!!!
Uh oh, I just remembered something. Jeter hasn’t DPed in a while.
Damon strikeout…predictable…now where is the inning ending double play?
Joe Girardi is a clown.
I usually defend Girardi, but with Jeter hitting pretty well, bunting is a no brainer.
Oh yeah. I forgot, bunting is for the first inning.
You might not want to be calling people dumb, when you are not sure yourself whether to use “too” or “to”, Brettisgod.
I told you all Showalter should be our manager.
He would never screw up as bad as Girardi.
Let him be GM and manager.
irod has thrown out 21 of 41 basestealers this year, btw, one of the best % in mlb.
I thought that was okay, just one out.
Please God don’t let Jeter roll one over here.
not bunting there is a crime.
Where is Mattingly when you need him
nice job joe, now we didnt score. how is he a major leauge manager.
The CAPTAIN!!!!!
Maybe Kay will get off his junk now….
And what the HELL is Girardi doing???
WTF is wrong with Girardi???
his last few weeks have been AWFUL….
you knew jeter was going to hit into a DP
this is a joke
thank god football season is soon
this team is sick..
they are pathetic beyond belief..
beyond…..
LOL I called that inning. Girardi made a good move not bringing in Mo but he’s still an idiot.
god has forsaken us.
this game is over
jeter will GIDP
robertson will give up 2 runs in top of the 10th
soria will shut the door
wish we had a real manager.
wow, couldnt have seen that coming F()CK YOU GIRARDI!!!!
hmm, that somehow seems familiar
God hates me, that’s what it is.
“Save us Jeter!!!”
…or, just continue killing rallies like you have all year.
Good job Capt, way to pick up your team.
Do we have to wait ’till the end of the game to fire Girardi or can we do it right now? He’s doing it on purpose now, he wants to mess with the Yankees, only explanation. He can’t believe that’s the best option.
dfa giaridi
If the Yankees lose this game, I doubt there’s one person who would be upset if Girardi was fired.
They could have one this game without getting a single hit. Instead they opted to slug away for some reason.
Someone said before Michael Kay thinks he should be manager, at this point, I’d much rather see him be the manager than Girardi. How could Kay possibly do a worse job?
A textbook could do a better job than Girardi.
Girardi’s gotta bunt Damon there, once you’ve got a runner on 2nd and no outs.
idiotic
“cmon Jeter hit into a double play!”
Did I call it or did i call it?
Yea it is Girardis fault that his players SUCK..
JETER JUST HIT INTO A DP, and it is the mngrs. fault..
I’m shocked! Shocked I say!
So Damon fails to bunt Friday and they eliminate the strategy for Saturday?
Damn we need the old boss Steinbrenner who would have fired Girardi long ago like he did to Billy!
Pathetic team.
We’ve never seen such a Yankess team like this season before.
You need to bunt even if just to stay out of the DP. Girardi seems to always be managing for the last loss. He continues to dissapoint.
Where is Donnie?
Where is Donnie?
Where is Donnie?
Where is Donnie?
Where is Donnie?
How is Jeter GIDP Girardi’s fault?
why is everyone on base when jeter is hitting if the bases r empty he only gets one out. I blame the team for clogging the bases.
Very odd decision by Girardi.
This is how manager loses its team. Girardi is leading this team into the ground. No bunt? not the first time. Idiot manager, hopes he gets fired.
That was pathetic and now we have Mo in. If Mo gives up a run here Girardi should start getting worried for his job.
It’s not about results. I thought we looked good out there.
I CAN
I CAN
“Im sure Joe will have a good reason…..”
Yeah, he better think of one before the postgame.
“dfa giaridi”
dfa the front office too.
I am serious, Cashman and Hal cannot be happy watching Girardi manage us to 4th place. I see a managing change upcoming.
Ever since the trade, he has made so many enormous errors.
jeter you stink. Capt GIDP indeed!
Nice managing by Girardi that inning. Is he trying to lose this game? Obviously he is too proud to bunt.
I CAN’T WAIT FOR GIRARDI’S POST GAME INTERVIEW
Jeter needs to be benched for a few days!
He hurts this team when he plays lately AND he’s hurt.
Swallow your damn pride, Captain. You’re my fav player, my idol, but you are CHOKING IT UP worse than anyone I’ve ever seen.
Worse than AROD.
girardi stinks, he always wants to get the big inning, well news flash it hasn’t happened all year!!!! play sound baseball, bunt the runner over to score
GAME OVER
This is not the kind of captain you want. Derek Jeter is just getting to old and needs young fresh guys.
I have no idea what he is doing, but he certainly isnt a very good baseball manager
if and when gardner shows me he’s a major leaguer, ill worry about how to spell his first name.
so far it doesnt look like ill have to bother.
Even Art Howe would have bunted there.
Last night runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out, he has Gardner who is an auto out, swing away??
WTF????
Thank you very much.
Good night eyeryone!!!!
People, what Girardi did isn’t a questionable move, it’s the WRONG move, hands down.
We all see the Yankees try to hit with RISP. They can’t do it. When you have a chance to WIN a game WITHOUT getting a hit, how can you pass that up??? They would take it EVERY single day of the week.
what is MO’s ERA in the 10th inning of tie games?
“Yea it is Girardis fault that his players SUCK..
JETER JUST HIT INTO A DP, and it is the mngrs. fault..”
No, it’s the managers fault for not managing the game well.
Post game:
YES: So you didnt but two over and you brought in Rivera in a tie game?
Girardi: Guess the better team just won today.
Me: All year the better team has been winning.
They’re not going to get rid of Girardi. Especially not after what went down with Torre last year.
Its not the DP Angel its the strategy
Hey guys I have a question! I went to the Scranton Yankees sight and it said Melky Cabrera was a Reserve and it said 40 man mlb yes. What does that mean? Whats a reserve? Does that mean they just gave up on him and he will not play down there?
Ok, seriously one of you New yorkers need to meet up with Joe and give him a little what for.
I would do it, but not much Girardi contact since the Northwestern days.
And to think this guy was my catching instructor.
the yanks should have 6 runs it is not girardis fault these guys are inept.
just like mo should be in the game now and do his job..
“Someone said before Michael Kay thinks he should be manager, at this point, I’d much rather see him be the manager than Girardi.”
Good luck finding a big enough hat.
Ive been a Girardi defender all year year until the start of the last road trip, fire him.
Ive been a Girardi defender all year year until the start of the last road trip, fire him.
“Yea it is Girardis fault that his players SUCK..
JETER JUST HIT INTO A DP, and it is the mngrs. fault..”
If he had Damon bunting Jeter wouldn’t even get the chance to hit into a DP. But no, why would the manager want to put his players in the best position to succeed?
Cano is a piece of crap. He smiles and laughs like he’s done something…..
Abreu looked pretty pissed at him.
“How is Jeter GIDP Girardi’s fault?”
because if he had told Johnny or Jeter to bunt they would have stayed out of the DP and moved into 3b.
All I’ll say about Girardi is I agree it’s not his fault his team sucks, quit blaming him for not coming in and doing what Torre did in his 1st year, because Torre at that time had a team of guys who would do anything to win and Girardi doesn’t.
That said, Girardi is under a lot of pressure right now (these past few weeks) and seems to be responding awfully. Lots of dumb decisions in that time. That is a red flag.
“They’re not going to get rid of Girardi. Especially not after what went down with Torre last year.”
Probably not.
Be ready for 2 more years of losing baseball.
Does kay ever shut up? Did he ever go after torre like that when he made a move that didn’t pan out?
stuart
August 16th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Yea it is Girardis fault that his players SUCK..
JETER JUST HIT INTO A DP, and it is the mngrs. fault..
Its not girardis fault how jeter hit, it IS DEFINITELY his fault there was a running on first to DP, since he chose not to bunt the others into scoring position and eliminate the double play.
Michael Kay of Manager 09
“Abreu looked pretty pissed at him.”
And when even BOBBY ABREU looks mad at you for mailing it in, you know you have serious, serious issues with your game.
What the hell am I going to do in October now??
Whatever
WOW are big guys are coming up.. they are good for at least 1 K…
I like Michael Kay. We share the same views.
melky didnt get to scranton for yesterday’s game so he wasnt activated for them. they will play him every day in cf starting today.
all you girardi haters out there are fools. mattingly would have ran this team into the ground faster than you can say one post season appearence. and if torre were still at the helm fogettaboutit. dude has been around baseball his whole carrear and you suckas are acting like little michael kay minions. frankly, and in the words of a great thespian, i pitty you. the reason the game isn’t over is because the yankees chokes twice with the bases loaded, not because girardi decided not to bunt in the 9th inning and this whiny charade ringmastered by michael “seeya” kay has got me close to tearing out my eardrums. it’s days like this that i really miss bobby murcer, a true yankee broadcaster
Tell Jeter to bunt?
Have I been asleep for as long as Jeter has been playing?
“That said, Girardi is under a lot of pressure right now (these past few weeks) and seems to be responding awfully. Lots of dumb decisions in that time. That is a red flag.”
alot of pressure?!?!?!? LOL!!!
What pressure?
The FO already gave up on this team with public quotes about how we’ll win NEXT YEAR.
Girardi is under no pressure.
prediction for bottom of the 10th -
abreu will ground out
arod will strikeout
betemit will strikeout
Score 1 friggin run now.
Get to work bats!!
It’s obvious now that firing Torre was a massive miscalculation by Hank and Co. Not even the most hateful Torre detractors could come up with a valid argument against it. Injures? Please, that’s nothing new the last couple of years with this team.
Despite that, it would be foolish to fire Girardi after 1 year.
Can’t the scoreboard operators change the inning number when Mo comes in the 9th in a tie game?
That shot of Cashman after the commercial break was priceless…standing there with his hand cupped over his mouth staring down at the field.
And as I am sure you’re all wondering, yeah it looked like there was vomit leaking from between his fingers.
vlad scored from 2nd on a wild pitch would that ever happen for the yanks???
Let’s just hope Mo with a 1-2-3 in a tie game has to be a good omen.
and we once again are showing the MIGHTY KC ROYALS that we will NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT ! ( what a pathetic group of Spankees we are seeing, huh ? )
A month and a half from now their gonna have some soup operas on TV!
Exactly. Girardi is under NO pressure at all… the FO mailed in the season when they didn’t get Santana.
Hank told us in November it was a transition year.
#53 walk off
damon got all pissed off about having to bunt the other day, so girardi let him hit away and he didnt come through. damon has been one of the best hitters w/ risp so its not a no brainer to have him bunt there.
jeter’s dp killed them not girardi
A quick login to explain myself for the best blog in the business:
I usually save the bunt for the first and second innings, when it matters the most. Johnny had a pretty good AB, but you just gotta tip your hat to the pitcher, he did a fantastic job. We need to start winning some games now.
Torres time was up.. He was not fired BTW he turned down a 1 yr $6 mill deal..
I’ve only been able to follow the game sporadically while working. It seems like every time I check in, the Yanks are on the verge of scoring, only to… not.
Is this game a microcosm of the season?
It feels like this:

“It’s obvious now that firing Torre was a massive miscalculation by Hank and Co. ”
How so?
If you replace a Gremlin with a Pacer and the Pacer sucks too, does that make the Gremlin any better than it was before?
The grass is always greener…
Cashman was probably throwing up thinking about how he passed up Pena, Bowa, and Showalter for this clown Girardi.
A manager change will be made. Girardi will get offered job as a bench coach, however.
Thank you skeptic but one more thing. Does Melky and Brett switch salarys?
for the money these guys make a robot should be managing them and they should perform
do not blame the manager for players inadequacies. the players are getting old before our eyes.
It’s okay Bobby.
“Torres time was up.. He was not fired BTW he turned down a 1 yr $6 mill deal..”
Why didn’t Girardi get the same contract?
Fire Girardi has a nice ring to it
The trouble is though, with Girardi’s decisions, they’re decisions that can go either way depending on how they’re executed. When you have a bunch of guys not executing at the plate or on the field, they tend to make everything you try to do look bad because the outcome is always bad.
People used to say that the players made Torre look a genius because he made lots of decisions that were bad, but because they executed it he looked good.
LOLZ @ Joe Girardi
Betemit SO, Mo pitches the 11th?
“Tell Jeter to bunt?
Have I been asleep for as long as Jeter has been playing?”
Jeter can bunt for the game winning run or he can lead the AL in GIDP. your choice.
haha and the king of chokes strikes (out) again. it’s funny to see how non clutch a-rod is when he’s not in a walk year. what a loser.
I cant wait for Brett to come up next inning. He will put an end to this nonsense. Imagaine that! A rookie showing these veterans how its done!
Ay bendito!!!!
” Does Melky and Brett switch salarys?”
They switch everything. Even nannies.
nobody calling for an abomb here? 2nd chance for the GPITHOTG to win the game….
anybody….nobody….?
It’s okay Alex.
““It’s obvious now that firing Torre was a massive miscalculation by Hank and Co. â€

Torre sucks yet the Yankees made the playoffs 12 years under him. This team Girardi has is more or less the same team as 07.
Factor what you want from injuries and performance but you can’t argue against the results Torres teams produced in the regular season.
Firing a manager after 12 playoff berths was stupid then and it’s stupid now.
“People used to say that the players made Torre look a genius because he made lots of decisions that were bad, but because they executed it he looked good.”
The same people say that Girardi is making good decisions but the players are making him look bad.
It tells you alot about those people.
KC needs to strike out the side….GO ROYALS !!!
It is high….it is far…..it is a clutch strike out by madonna boy.
“Despite that, it would be foolish to fire Girardi after 1 year.” Yeah, between games 123 and 124 would be better.
It’s easy to forget that Girardi was NL manager of the year. The difference of course is the type of team he had: young kids, no one watching, nothing to lose, and they played free and easy. He’s a good managerial type for that kind of group: no-nonsense, former player who isn’t far removed from his big league playing days. I think the FLA kids related well to him and his style.
This group could not be more different: vets, big contracts, tons of fans, lots of scrutiny–a cauldron. It’s hindsight of course, but Cash and Co. made a mistake hiring someone who is, clearly, not a good fit for the team he’s managing.
He doesn’t suck as a manager, though he’s made some REALLY questionable decisions recently that haven’t worked out–it’s just a bad match. Thing is, I’m not so sure a Don Mattingly would do any better: same mold as Girardi. Yanks need a Lou or a Leyland-type.
Arod as clutch as ever..
this is one of there top 10 losses for the year if it occurs..
they are so inept and we have morons blaming the manger for there ineptness. just today.. abses loaded no outs big boys up and they get zilch, bases loaded again 1 out they get zilch nady K’s.
2 on zereo out in the 9th and the top of the order does jack..
yea it is Girardi’s fault!!!!!!!!!!!!
“When you have a bunch of guys not executing at the plate or on the field, they tend to make everything you try to do look bad because the outcome is always bad.”
If you know they are bad, then choose the safe option. It’s not hard and it’s not complicated.
He is not motivating the team that is the problem.
Torre had to go but we need an experienced manager who was hard-nosed and who these millionaires would respond to.
Players do not respect Girardi. He has no credentials and is too young. Donnie Baseball would have been the same problem.
Still not too late to rectify it.
WTH, WILSON ??? You are supposed to swing that pitch, son !
April -You know, our hitters have been a slump, but as soon as they start bats heat up were going to win a lot of games in a row. We need to start winning series, we need to start winning games.
May -You know, our hitters have been a slump, but as soon as they start bats heat up were going to win a lot of games in a row. We need to start winning series, we need to start winning games.
June -You know, our hitters have been a slump, but as soon as they start bats heat up were going to win a lot of games in a row. We need to start winning series, we need to start winning games.
July -You know, our hitters have been a slump, but as soon as they start bats heat up were going to win a lot of games in a row. We need to start winning series, we need to start winning games.
August -You know, our hitters have been a slump, but as soon as they start bats heat up were going to win a lot of games in a row. We need to start winning series, we need to start winning games.
“DRILLED DEEP TO LEFT FIELD!!!!!!!!! but foul….”
…By 100 feet.
Does Nady ever take that first pitch?
Isin’t it sad that Betemit is having the best ABs of the entire team today?
“Tell Jeter to bunt?
Have I been asleep for as long as Jeter has been playing?â€
Jeter can bunt for the game winning run or he can lead the AL in GIDP. your choice.
My point was, he’s never needed anyone to tell him to bunt and when.
Here’s my agenda, I hope this team loses enough so I can get another shot at starting. I’ve been working on pitching into the 3rd innings. I’m not there yet, but after a few big league outings, I’ll get there.
“If you know they are bad, then choose the safe option. It’s not hard and it’s not complicated.”
Exactly. This team has a much better chance of dropping down a few bunts rather than having to get a hit with RISP.
It’s so simple. If you don’t have to get a hit to win, you take it. Just play the odds.
I just mentioned 5 men in scoring position with zero or 1 out on 3 different occasion and they score nothing at it is Girardis fault!!!!!!!!
you guys are total morons….
KING FELIX
“for the money these guys make a robot should be managing them and they should perform
do not blame the manager for players inadequacies. the players are getting old before our eyes.”
I so agree with you, but when the team is scuffling, the manager has to be able to make decisions that increase your chance for success.
Girardi has failed miserably as of late, and for a better part of the year for that matter.
thank you, X-man….another clutch Spankee shows what this team is made of….
I almost forget Ponson started this game.
Do yankees players really post on this blog?
wow, girardi must be batting around .115 with RISP this year if this is his fault.
They can’t score a run if their life depended on it.
“The trouble is though, with Girardi’s decisions, they’re decisions that can go either way depending on how they’re executed.”
Tell me how opting not to bunt in a tie game, bottom of the ninth with 2 runners on and no outs can go “either way”?
It’s like Girardi was totally oblivious to the score and thought the Yankees needed a big inning to get back into it.
To use an old classic on here “Someone needs to wake up Joe”.
“Factor what you want from injuries and performance but you can’t argue against the results Torres teams produced in the regular season.”
Fair enough on this point, but I think it had gotten fairly obvious that Torre’s teams had become too soft to do anything in the postseason. Ever since the not bunting on Schilling nightmare. So, who cares what his teams can do in the regular season if they always get knocked out in the first round?
It was time to change something after 3 back to back seasons of 1st round exits. The manager was a change that could easily be made, so they did. Personally I thought it was time for him to go after not even trying to get time called during the midge debacle. The garbage with batting A-Rod 8th and Sheffield in the heart of the order in ’06 was a fireable offense too.
stuart, girardi should have bunted damon in the 9th, and we might not have been in extra innings. Thats how you play baseball, thats how you manage.
“wow, girardi must be batting around .115 with RISP this year if this is his fault.”
That’s EXACTLY why it’s Girardi’s fault. Look at that average, what do they have a better chance of doing, dropping down two bunts and winning the game WITHOUT a hit, or getting a hit with RISP???
It’s not that complicated.
Why would they have any more respect for Showalter? What are his credentials that give him so much more potential respect?
If you think Showalter would be a better manager, thats fine – but being successful due to having respect or a lack of respect has nothing to do with it.
Pushing MO in a tie game is like pushing Ponson past 100 pitches in the 7th inning of a 3-2 game.
We got 1 scoreless out of Rivera, enough. Go to Rasner or Traber for the 11th
“Torre had to go but we need an experienced manager who was hard-nosed and who these millionaires would respond to.”
In retrospect I can’t help but kind of wish Torre had been let go after 2006 and we had brought Sweet Lou back although he also scares me with blowing out young guys’ arms.
damon hits into very few Dp’s he needs to put the ball in play..
you can dispute the decision but if Damon does not K they have men on 2nd and 3rd…
the players stink, it is not GIrardi..
Are we watching minor league game today?
Mo at 18 pitches with 2 outs.. he can go 1 more inning….
they will never do it but should…
“3 back to back seasons of 1st round exits”
lol @ myself
the Yankees’ inability to hit with RISP is driving me to e-incoherence!
edit button ftw
I pitch really well, I would have been 20 game winner. The batters just got really lucky every game i pitch.
Phil Hughes – Yeah bro! same here!!
How many quality starts is that for Ponson?
His resume is going to look great for 09, and he will get a well deserved contract away from the Yankees. With this kind of run support, he will be glad to leave.
The world turned upside down.
this game is a joke. The Yanks have only scored one real run in 11 innings against a horrible team
My new teammates are very pathetic. I could probably hit better than most of them.
yea rasner and Traber those are 2 really good options.
that is like you want to get stabbed or shot, bad choices…
“Are we watching minor league game today?”
Please, let’s not insult the Trenton Thunder like that. They have more wins than the Yankees you know! And are reigning champs and looking for another.
Giraldi is clueless, but the Yankees won’t admit they made a mistake naming him mgr. & will use the injuries as an excuse. This team should have hired Bowa or Pena to generate some passion. Bring back Bowa & hire O’Neil as bench coach & lets light a fire under these unachievers. Somebody has to kick them in the butt to wake them up!
Let Rivera pitch, there is no postseason to save him for this year. Hopefully we get him a win here.
“you can dispute the decision but if Damon does not K they have men on 2nd and 3rd…”
Are you an idiot? There’s no such thing as fly outs, groundouts to the left side, pop ups, double plays, foul outs, etc.?
Do you not see the amount of outcomes there can be from letting him swing? You act like if he doesn’t strikeout he automatically moves the runners over.
Tell me how opting not to bunt in a tie game, bottom of the ninth with 2 runners on and no outs can go “either way
Umm, if they don’t get the bunt down? That is a possible outcome.
Look, I’m not saying he shouldn’t have bunted given his prone tendency to GIDP at the worst possible times this year, but I’ve seen Jeter bunt at ludicrous times too on his own – so if he thought a bunt was his best chance at scoring a run, he should have done it.
John Buck looks like a Yankee hitter.
just because michael kay says it doesnt make it so:
damon w/ risp: .361
jeter w/ risp: .311
abreu w/ risp: .292 413
damon is his clutchest hitter in the lineup, joe’s best % play there is to have damon and jeter hit away. he was playing it by the books
kay and the rest of you are morons.
now who is gonna pitch if we don’t score? Anyone reliable?
More cowbell, please.
Even if the Yankees win, which would be great, the fact that they are in an extra-innings, life-and-death struggle to beat the Kansas City Royals (13.5 games out/last place in the AL Central) speaks volumes about how bad this team is.
If the Kansas City Royals are playing us so tough, imagine what will happen when we see the Rays/Sox.
DFox moron look a Damons stats he has the least # of GIDP on the team.. He is hitting 320 + with RISP and normally he is not exactly jose Molina.
SO f off..
YEa a bunt would not have been a bad choice but hitting Johnny Damon is also not a bad choice.. And again he failed bunting last night…
Now watch us not do anything vs this scrub and his near 6 ERA
So, who is left in the pen?
Robertson, Traber, and who else? Rasner is starting next week, so he isint available. Did we bring up another arm?
If Girardi bunted Damon successfully, jeter would of been intentionally walked to set uo the dp, so it would of been Abreu up with the bases loaded and 1 out.
Basically Girardi choose to give Damon Jeter and Abreu a shot to win the game than Abreu and Arod.
Didn’t I tell you Mo would be fine if he came in with a tie???
That said, WHAT??????
Obviously the last thing I expected was to come home and have the game still going! Maybe there is a blessing coming for the Yankee faithful…?
that was Giradi’s fault that Cano sucks..
HE should have had him bunt.. EVEN THOUGH CANO CANNOT RUN OR BUNT WHAT THE HECK THE EXPERTs Here think he should have bunted…..
this team has lost it’s mind
some no name with a 6 era will get the win vs. this absolute JOKE of a team….what else can you call us at this point…its a joke
the manager has got to be high in the dugout and don’t even get me started on the lack of clutch hitting. ITS RE-FU(KING-DICULOUS
“The garbage with batting A-Rod 8th”
I won’t argue your other points because they are all fair but I always heard this brought up when people were making the case against Torre.
A-Rod was batting 8th because he was absolutely lost att he plate. I always go back to Game 7 of the 03 ALCS. Giambi was lost and he was moved to the 7 spot of the lineup. He responded bigtime and hit 2 key HRs. I think Joe was looking for more of the same and trying to fire up A-Rod.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that.

I pitch really well, I would have been 20 game winner. The batters just got really lucky every game i pitch.
Phil Hughes – Yeah bro! same here!!
Phil never made excuses.
Its not Girardi’s fault that all these players are underachievers. I remember when we had guys like Paul O Neil and Bernie, they would never let this happen. The players we got today just pose for the damn cameras, its a joke. They probably have a make-up guy in the dugout for all we know. Maybe Lou Pinella would’ve straightened these men out.
When we officially get eliminated, should we let Girardi rest and make Thompson the manager for the rest of the season?
This guy is BEGGING Yankee hitters to get on base and they want no part of it. Unfnbelievable. What a disgrace.
so whos in after this? robertson….say goodbye. this team fricking sucks
dont tell me going for the sac fly was the best option, this team cannot score on sac flies.
Bunt, Bunt, Bunt…….
another 1
2
3
shoot me this team is a disgrace to baseball
THIS ROYALS PEN LOOKS LIKE THAT OF THE 96 YANKEES
He can’t bunt, automatic out!
This is torture
C’mon guys, Cano is a great hitter, i mean he has a really level swing, given that swing doesnt make contact with any baseballs, but it is SOOOO level
Anyone who still thinks we are being too hard on our team should be shot in the head.
Girardi should stop doing crossword puzzles after each end of inning and pay more attention to the game
great here comes robertson, game over. what a joke
Sigh. Good luck Robertson but I’m not expecting much. When is the last time the kid even pitched?
“Robertson, Traber, and who else? Rasner is starting next week, so he isint available. Did we bring up another arm?”
Chris “Humpty Dumpty” Britton
Lucky Robertson is pitching against a triple AAA team!
robertson is still on the team? i thought we sent him down for traber
looks like the gardner era started in the 4th inning and ended in the 7th today.
did bretisgod change his name yet?
trisha….your byline also says arod will start to hit…….
britton is our last hope after robertson
it will be a miracle if this team gets another hit with men in scoring pos. EVER
The game was lost with the Zavier Nady DP that came before the Cano triple.
If he had just struck out or made a productive out, we would be leading.
Must have…..
i was just wondering if they will hit another home run this year
“looks like the gardner era started in the 4th inning and ended in the 7th today”
sure except for the part where he worked a walk with nobody out in the 9th. Oh wait I forgot, that’s small potatoes compared to Melky, who would have hit a walkoff shot.
People keep noting how the Yankees are only “xxx” games out of the WC.
We lose this one and they are all of 4 ahead of Baltimore for last place.
you obviously believe in the fallacy of the predetermined outcome!
Game was over when Damon didnt bunt before striking out and Jeter’s 185th double play this season.
Help us baby Jebus
Does Teixeria hit with RISP?
“trisha….your byline also says arod will start to hit”
tiegame, I know it does. One of our posters asked me to use it as part of the byline and Arod actually started getting some hits after that. So I left it there.
We need a walk off. I can’t see runs coming in any other way. But I’ll take them of course.
It was actually nice to come back to the game. I am sure I would be chewing nails right now if I had sat through from the 8th (when I had to leave).
Uh people, Robertson is one of the good pitchers on this team. He’s had a couple of bad outings, but he is definitely a keeper.
prediction -
britton will receive the loss.
Cashman is thinking of which Yankee he will put a hit out on first.
Batting next for the yankees…. GIDP
Leaks Michael? I say the roof is damaged.
would have been nice with the runners on.
My god, this is almost as painful as watching the offense last year in Game 2 in Cleveland vs. Carmona and extra innings.
leaks, from a 200 million dollar tornado.
So, what I miss?
My yard looks great, and I see the Yanks bats still look like crap.
who are these characters from the royals bullpen (worst ERA in baseball) who have shut down this offense for 2 days?
teixeira:
2008 (combined)
avg: .294
w/ runners on: .304
w/ RISP: .299
w/ RISP 2 out: .278
w/ bases loaded: .583
career:
avg: .287
w/ runners on: .298
w/ RISP: .323
w/ RISP 2 out: .294
w/ bases loaded: .355
This team reminds me of the Titanic sinking.
lucky!!!
I wonder how the announcers can still call these games without using profanities or laughing.
A-rod should go home to his wife (or whoever) and maybe take Giambi with him.
Kay wants to manage. I say, let him and see what happens.
“who are these characters from the royals bullpen (worst ERA in baseball) who have shut down this offense for 2 days?”
They are the ones who were taken to the woodshed by the WS with back-to-back-to-back-back HRs earlier this week.
ARod…do something!
This guy Peralta is making this team look like a bunch of puppies trying to suck a nipple
Abreu walks! Time for an A-Rod DP?
Kay actually might motivate these players… he is good friends with Arod.
Look a win is a win is a win. Let’s just hope we get one here.
did anyone else just get less confident?
Up to A-Rod, here comes the DP or K.
c’mon astats, one fraking time!
here we go again, trying to hit it into yonkers bay
i mean… a base hit wins the game… not a 3 run homer
They win it here.
Prelude to a walkoff?
When Arod does one of those almosts, doesn’t he follow up some of the time?
I have a feeling if we eventually win this game it will propel us to a huge run like a 12 of 14 type run. This could be a momentum changing win.
wow… jason varitek in boston just felt a breeze through his hair
im saying arod sticks it to me right here
and ill be glad
oh no
RISP!
Hanging slider and A-Rods swings right throught it.
Send this pretty boy to AAA. I’d rather have Shelley Duncan in there than Aflop.
shelley is sadly on the dl
Betemit will deliver, he is an elite RBI man
Whitey Ford just had a better day than Askank playing whiffle ball with his great grand kids.
he had a sack fly, even with the depends.
It is astounding to think about the fact that the Yankees are in the 12th inning trying to take a game from KC where the Yanks have scored all of 2 runs.
Astounding.
Jeter on third-what happens here? Predictions?
I just puked all over my computer.
C’mon betemit make contact
no one should be surprised at this point.
wilson imitation crab meat
(still praying for another wild pitch)
Now we have to pray that there is a hit, or a wild pitch, passed ball, something to end this damned game!
COME ON NOW PLEASE! I have to go out in a little while…
Only way we win it is on a wild pitch.
My prediction? Carl Pavano parachutes onto the field and comes in to pitch the 13th.
why wasn’t hal smart enough to put a “clutch/RISP” clause in arod’s contract stating he had to be among the leage leaders in RISP/late and close situations and he only gets the full $30 million if he meets those requirements, otherwise he only gets $20 million.
maybe then he would work harder
I’m considering waiting outside the Stadium today and asking several Yankees to sign copy of Double Fantasy.
That’s if we make it to the 13th and we dont find a way to lose the game in this inning. There’s got to be a way we can lose this game still in the 12th.
Come on!
it’s not a question of his working hard. It’s the fact he is a mental headcase.
shelley played 1b for scranton last game (rained out last night)
Ugh Betemit don’t strike out
Next time up, Girardi needs to pinch hit Ransom for Arod.
Is there anyone left defending A-Rod? Are the idiots on No Maas still with him? I stopped visiting that echo chamber of stupidity last year, so I don’t know.
This is f’ing bad. This team is just awful!
And i puked again.
Hahahahahahaha.
There was an Italy/Guam Little League game on earlier that was MUCH better than this.
Someone please end this madness.
i wish i could crawl into my tv and smack wilson bettemit across the mouth
Omg this guy makes contact on like 40% of his swings maybe not even that
Okay let’s all dump on Wilson…
(I’m hoping we don’t but everyone gets a turn so I figure you will.)
after a while don’t you just sit on the change up?
Wow. We have reached new levels of ineptitude
This is a joke
Still being the masochist, Bob?
Um how can you ph Ransom when he was already in and out of the game?
Ranson ran for Giambi in the 7th and later was replaced by Betemit.
this game = the Special Olympics
Against the Kansas City Royals. Amazing.
Wilson couldn’t make contact even if the pitchers were throwing watermelons.
I don’t know why everyone keeps commenting on our bats.
Can’t the other team just be making the perfect pitches?
Every single game?
I REALLY hope they find a way to pull this one out so I can see it again in 4 years on Yankees Classics.
You got to tip your hat to Hacky Horriblestuff, he was just better than we were today.
Johnny Peralta or Scott Shields?
wow… stepped away for a while. 13 innings to beat the Royals.
Yankees are a force, everyone better watch out. Definitely playoff bound
UNCLUTCH!
The good thing about being home in an extra innings game is that you have the advantage.
The sad thing is that we might as well be away for all the good it’s doing us.
Self-fulfilling prophecy might be about right.
This is just pathetic.. This is the Royals.
you know who must be loving Mr. Clutch, C Rod. She stayed married to him as he was having a career year leading to an outstanding payday of which she is getting half. Now that he is blowing it, she is probably laughing all the way to the bank.
sweet, leadoff walk.
the 13th does kinda seem like an aptly grotesque point to lose this game.
it won’t be for naught if they send Meacham packing immediately after the “gotta tip your hat” postgame show. how large does the call to hold Damon at 3rd loom now?
I absolutely buy what Kay and Leiter are saying about the Yankees pressing and that it’s making things not work. I totally understand it.
I still want to win this flippin game! Please Yankees.
“you know who must be loving Mr. Clutch, C Rod. She stayed married to him as he was having a career year leading to an outstanding payday of which she is getting half.”
pre-nup.
Bring Matsui back NOW. Why waste his time in the minors. If he sucks, he will feel right at home.
This game is a microcosm of the Yankees season. A-Rod unclutch, team cant hit with RISP and Betemit as always shouldn’t be a major leaguer.
Its down to this.? When you have an elite team like the Yankees against a weak team like the Royals.Going to 13 innings with a score of 2 runs against a team with 55 wins. Things must be bad. I’m sure Jete wants the game to be over so he can fly in his private jet to Austin Texas to see his girlfriend again to get some more power lovin. This is painful and it’s not just A-Rod either. It’s the entire team.
“wow… stepped away for a while. 13 innings to beat the Royals.”
Beat the Royals? WhatyoutalkinboutWillis? You must have the Yankees confused with a team that show some heart and fight in such situations!
the only thing these hacks care about beating is the GWB traffic home, apparently.
bettemit is a major leage loser
What is an RISP?
haha so true!!
This sucks!
‘Gileen has 76 rbis on a team who isnt that great.’
Abreu has 78 on a team not that great.
youd never see a game like this with the boston red sox, thats why this is so depressing
I meant Guillen. Like i said i puked on my computer.
OMG WAY TO GO PUDGE! HERE WE GO. BOTTOM OF THE 13TH! THE INNING THAT TURNS THIS WHOLE THING AROUND!
GO GET ‘EM BOMBERS!!!!
well, as ugly as this is….
the pitching has been outstanding.
at what point to the pitchers start asking joe to let them hit and see if they could score a freakin run? its could’t hurt!
i’m pretty sure we’ve broken a record for most men LOB through 12 innings. The MLB record for a 9-inning game is 20. we’re up to 30 through 12. way to go record breaking offense!
1st time he doesn’t throw to the shortstop side of second.
I missed most of the game, did Joakin Soria pitch already?
When Gardner walked, forget the bunt with Damon, I’m not sure why Christian didn’t pinch run for Pudge. It’s the perfect set up for a double steal, either get the runner to Third or if he gets thrown out, there’s still a runner in scoring position. This is an even bigger non-move once Damon struck out, as stealing third with the righty Jeter up would have been easier than with the lefty Damon.
I don’t understand why Gorardi won’t move Giambi out of the 5 spot. He killed us there today, and since Giambi needs to be taken out for defense or pinch running, once he’s gone, the hole in the line-up is even bigger. I;’ve come around to Brandon’s way of thinking, Nady should be there. Even though h’s had a bad day, he’s the best overall option.
[]= U C K the skankees
here comes cy fulchino
Nady is due to break out of his slump right now.
babe nady
Alright this guy is a chino so we win cause he’s not in the olympics!
predictions – bottom 13
nady will ground out
pudge will strike out
gardner will strikeout
britton the innings eater will pitch the top of the 14th
“at what point to the pitchers start asking joe to let them hit and see if they could score a freakin run? ”
Moose should hit for Betemit next time he comes to bat if this gets that far.
id rather have coulter bean up to bat right now
props to the bullpen
F+ to the Offense
no Soria so far – they are saving him for when they get the lead (if they get the lead)
Bonds or Sheffield are the only options at this point
Play Damon in CF, Giambi at 1st, Bonds/Sheff at DH
13 K’s for the yanks so far..
Just end it. Either way. Someone. Anyone. Make the pain stop.
Hey fellow Yanks’ fans. Here’s an idea: Put on a video of one of those 90′s championship teams, and while you’re watching it, play “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand.
If this doesn’t end now, rest assured it will be over next inning as Billy Traber is warming up.
pudge now at 50% throwing out runners this year and 40% with the yankees. those of you who keep saying he’s no good at throwing out runners are just making yourselves look very foolish.
big deal robbie. where were you in the 12 innings ago?
F+?
Way too generous.
I give them a G. So bad, we need a letter worse than F.
a hit because there was no one in scoring position!
nady has been a huge disappointment.
BBB that is funny. NICE!
So here is the topper to the Yankees ineptitude, they will not win this game before using all their pitchers. Wilson Betemit will come in as a pitcher, Pudge will move to 1st and Molina will come into catch.
Yankees will win in 20 innings 4-3.
“no Soria so far – they are saving him for when they get the lead (if they get the lead)”
OK good if they keep the game tied eventually they’ll get a run off the crap pitchers in their bullpen
potential losing ground out
Sheff is under contract for next year at huge $ are you serious?/
If so bad bad idea…
It feels like someone needs to hit a HR, because thats the only way they’re going to get someone across the plate.
Isin’t I-Rod 2nd behind Jeter in DPs?
sorry i forgot pudge threw out a runner earlier, he’s now at 45% with the yankees.
deja spew
“big deal robbie. where were you in the 12 innings ago?”
In fairness he did drive in the only legit run of the game.
how about a bloop please.. I forgot Cano cannot run
We need to bring up that guy who pitches with both arms.
I rod does hit into a ton of DP’s..
Vlad leads the league.. But Jeter is on his heels…
honestly, id rather have gardner’s pink chewing gum pinch hit for him
Traber will give up a walkoff HR to a lefty
we need to score now and end it.
i think they are going to change the layoffs at my company to “I am sorry but due to budget cuts, you are now being assigned to the Yankees”.
under performance = Yankeed
yankees win!!!!!!!!!!!
MAZAL TOV
BRETT IS GOD! He was right.
YAY!
holy sh-t!
BRETT mutha f’n GARDNER!!!!! YEAH BOIIII!!!!
See, Melky Carbera can win a game…..
the gidp thing is annoying but for 10 years eddie murray led the a.l. in gidp with donnie baseball right behind. pretty much always a good hitter wins that crown.
I take back the chewing gum comment!
Thank you Brett!
time to mow the lawn….let me see if i can get it done in half the time the yankees took to win this game
MV FREAKING P!!!! SIGN THIS MAN!! $30 MIL A YEAR FOR 20 FREAKING YEARS!!!
this should effectively end melky’s career as a yankee.
Gardner’s second walk-off single?
Oh wait, that was the other CF that can hit the ball.
You guy giving 100% every day gets a break. Tired veterans who make too much, never win the game.
brettisgod should show up again any second now
GARDNER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
YEAH EVERY DAMN PERSON ON THIS TEAM SUCKS ACCEPT FOR BRETT. BRETT IS TO GOOD EVEN FOR THIS TEAM HE DESERVES BETTER!
MELKY YOU SUCK!! MELKY IS HORRIBLE! GO CRY MELKY BECAUSE YOU NEER DELIVER AND WILL NEVER BE BACK IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES AGAIN! BRETT WIL BE THE CENTER FIELDER FOREVER AND WILL BE BETTER THEN BERNIE WILLIAMS I GARENTEE THAT!
WOOOHOOO
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! wow
Brett IS god. Wow.
Whiff (Cano’s bat)

LOOOOOVE IT!
Okay that’s better. Way better. Yay!
Bret groundball Gardner got a lucky hit!
Gardner said thanks to the Yankee front office for the opportunity, he should really be thanking Melk Dud for tanking so horribly.
It’s funny, I told Brett the other day that I saw him play in New York and I think I’ll see him there before the end of the year. At that time, I was refering to the 40 man rosters.
Then I heard he got called up.
Hopefully Brett has more of this to come for us in New York. They need that spark.
Gardner has so much heart. We need more players like him and less players like Arod who would rather cheat on his wife than play baseball.
Good for Gardner. Other than that it doesn’t even feel like a win.
But I’ll take it. Minny coughed up a 5-0 lead. Hopefully Seattle holds its slim lead.
brettisgod
Just wondering….which is larger…your IQ or your waist size?
This kid better be playing every day for the rest of the season. Keep letting him show what he’s got. I can only hope Juan Miranda joins him tomorrow.
Pathetic day for the Yanks overall, but epic win for Gardner. And really nice job by Robertson too. I have to go look up his splits cause it seems like he is positively nasty in tight games, when we’re up a few runs or tied, and only sucks when he comes in and we’re losing. I’ll surely take that over the reverse!
Wow, that’s a little much Brettisgod, lol
I didn’t see the end… how much were they celebrating after the hit?
I hope they were not enthusiastic about beating a last place team.
I am ecstatic but I am not on the Brett Gardener train yet (and may never be) This game was still poorly managed and Joe really down’t deserve a win. Lets not go overboard, Brett is not a god.
bretisgod, my question is what were you calling yourself during the last 4 innings?
Ya gotta believe!!!
i think Gardner’s mom is posting on here under the alias brettisgod
where did he hit the ball??
Gardner 2 game winners while having 75 AB’s and hitting 176.
Does he have more game winners then arod, giambi, and cano?
3 of 5 with a walk, not bad..
anyway they can win is good.
yeah Robertson stinks and will never amount to anything and same for Edwar…
Our big boys stink that is why they are where they are…
May I say YAY?????
Leaving for the night. Thank God we won. I am going to a birthday party with all Sux fanatics!
“Hopefully Brett has more of this to come for us in New York. They need that spark.”
If his minor league numbers are any indication (always a sizable period of adjustment when brought up a level) then he’s just getting started here.
Go Brett!!!
“where did he hit the ball??

Who had more to do with today’s win; Gardner, or Cano?
Oh, I’m sorry, the 1 RBI in the 13th is more valuable than the RBI and run in the 7th, right?
it was funny, damon, jeter, betamit and others all jumped on cano at the plate, while at first base, only christian came out to congratulate the guy that won it!
rookies never catch a break!
melky is horrible! we will never see melky again!
who agrees that we will never see melky again? who agrees that brett will be better then bernie williams? what a glorious day! I think Im pyschic lolololol
FORGET FAVRE, THIS IS THE BIG BRETT IN TOWN!
Let’s hope Brett doesn’t become the next Melky and gets run out of town after everyone gets excited.
robertson looked good
CANO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS WIN. THATS WHY I HATE THE VETRANS ON THIS TEAM. THIS WIN WAS ALL BRETT! WOOHOO
I think Brett is gonna be as famous as DEREK JETER
Hey,
# brettisgod August 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
This game is proof that if Brett hits we will probably win. He is energizing the team all ready like I said.
I can’t believe this annoying guy turns out to have the one insightful post today. Hey even broken clocks are right twice per day.
But Brett did himself some justice today. I think he just passed Arod for game winning hits.
Brettisgod, I’ll give kudos for today but if you’re going to continue to annoy everybody, then please go away.
I’m glad we won, but let’s put things in perspective. It takes 13 innings and a AAA call up to beat the KC Royals. What does that say about out team??
I want to like Gardner….but brettisgod…you are making it difficult.
Need to move away from building the team around aging superstars like Arod, Jeter, Posada etc. and build around the homegrown kids like Cano, Melky, Gardner, Miranda, Betemit etc. Let them play everyday the rest of the season to see what we have.
I AM NEVER LEAVING! THE DAY I LEAVE IS THE DAY BRETT LEAVES… NEVER!! Do you guys think Brett will ever leave? I sure hope not! I dnt know what I would do with myself
Dee – but at least they won. They need every win they can get. Better to win in 13 than to loose in 9!
lol llime I SO agreed with your post until you threw mlky in there. We arent building the team around him becaause newsflash the team does not LIKE MELKY CABRERA!
Cano was the MVP of this game.
Home grown kids like Betemit??????
Betemit home grown kid?
that kid was from the Dodgers and he isn’t a kid he 27!
Betemit is now homegrown and hes garbage
Betemit should be taken out with Monday’s garbage.
Cano was not MVP he did nothign Brett won the game Brett was MVP
Interesting, the Robertson splits are similar to what I suspected.
High leverage situations: .125 BAA
Medium leverage: .300 BAA
Low leverage: .259 BAA
Memo to Girardi: Pitch Robertson in tie games on the road, save Mo for the save!
not*
13 innings to beat the lowly royals… sad
BBB, you said it.
There was an adjustment period here in Scranton of about 50/60 at bats. He didn’t quite reach the mark he needed with the at bats last time maybe, but he was getting there.
And Brettisgod, I understand you like Brett, that’s fine. I happen to personally know Brett and he himself would tell you you’re crazy.
He’s a solid player, but quite frankly, don’t overdue it there. People on this board want to like him and many already do. You don’t need to be THIS pro Gardner.
As for the game, it’s a shame it took this long to win. So many chances to win and they couldn’t.
I was at the Legends Reunion game between Yankees and Red Sox legends today and guys in the press box were commenting that we should send the legends up to play in New York. That’s the kind of attitude that people are having, and that’s not good.
It’ll take more than one win to get me excited about this team as a whole.
YEAH betemit stinks we obviously need to completely change this team. I mean it is working so far. Just trade all the old and worthless guys and get young guys from triple aaa (but no melky we have a center fielder now) We could re do the team and have the same team for 10 years straight if there all young!
“I’m glad we won, but let’s put things in perspective. It takes 13 innings and a AAA call up to beat the KC Royals. What does that say about our team??”
That Brett Gardner is the best player on it?
Srsly, his game ending hits are almost as fun to watch as Brett Favre’s game ending INT’s!
Build a team around Betemit, Cano, Melky, Gardner, and Miranda?
Well if the objective is to be unwatchable, then that is a great team.
2 walk offs for Bret in 19 games is an indictment of the big boys since gardner has done as much late as some of those guys..
they won can we enjoy the damn win, they do not happen to often…
I feel bad for Melky… he is going from the Majors to the minors where he doesn’t know anybody, has to take bus trips places instead of private planes, play in front of 1,000 fans etc.
Your the only person in this plnet who feels bad for Melky the brat Cabrera.
Glad Gardner got the hit, he seems like a good kid and hard worker.
I just still dont think he will be much of a ML hitter
Brett is a confident guy I can just tell he is in love with himself. I dont blame him to be honest he is cool. And Brett would not think I was crazy.
HOW DO YOU KNOW HIM? DO YOU AGREE THAT MELKY IS A BRAT?
Robinson looks sad without melky haha
Melky just turned 24, he has played poorly but plays hard please stop the nonsense about Melky.
beat up on the multi multi millionaires but not guys like Melky..
Hughes Dynasty
These guys make way too much money for to ever feel bad for them

I’m actually sad to admit that I was hoping Brett Gardner wouldn’t get a hit, even at the expense of win. Purely because the thought of this person posting stuff like this was enough to make me do so.
You do realize that you are actually causing people to do this with your annoying antics, don’t you?
You can like a player without:
a. trashing the rest of the team
b. sounding like a groupie
c. typing in caps
d. overkill
Melky is old and had his chance. Sorry
hey everyone…why don’t we quite acknowledging this idiot…he’s obviously posting this to get a reaction
ignore him/her/it
Sorry I will calm down. I get very excited when it comes to Brett. I mean HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOUR FAVE PLAYER GOT CALLED UP AND DID AMAZING?! Pretty good but I will try to relax. Is there any other places where I can post about Brett to? I will try to be nicer to Melky also as I said before I have personal issues with the boy. I dont like anyone trying to take my favorite players spot because he deserves it so sorry.
True Nate, I was just hoping if by genuine chance that he really does happen to like BG, that pointing out that he’s actually not doing BG any favors by being such an annoying groupie might encourage him to tone it down a little. Its not like I want to dislike him, I want BG to do well.
If it doesn’t tone it down though, well then it would seem that the whole posting purely to get a reaction is indeed the single motive.
WOOHOO another 1 game win streak!!! OH YEAH!!!
Dont be so negative 1 game streak!!!
Melkey is young. It’s a mistake to count him out. I’m sure the send down to Scranton will have him working his hump to try and find out what’s going wrong.
Gardner is just about to turn 25, and Melk is younger than him, so the players are comparable. The difference is Melkey has been in the Majors for more than 20 games.
Gardner hasn’t. I still think it’s far too early to pass judgment that people are passing on both players. Gardner has earned his shot, and he’s going to try and run with it. Melkey will try to earn his spot back. More importantly, I can tell you that the guys in Scranton know they have a chance to be called up…years ago, they didn’t think that way.
Because they know it’s possible, it draws better prospects to the Yankees system. The players will work hard to earn their shot. In the long run, there’s more positives than we’re speaking about right now, I thought it would be good to get that out.
While I certainly don’t feel bad for Melky, it will be quite a change for him down in AAA. Overall, this is the best thing for him. So, while it sucks and is not as luxurious as playing in the majors, Melky will hopefully regain his stroke, some confidence, and be a better player because of it.
We shouldn’t be rooting for anybody to do bad or get hurt that is in the Yankee system. They all need to do well to help the parent club.
brettisgod-chill. Your boy did good today, but let’s take it one game at a time. kay?
Good post, Chris. You make really good points.
Patience is going to be required in developing our younger players. The Joba’s are the exception rather than the rule.
I just dont want Melky to do good b ecause then Brett will have to go down to the minors and I believe he is 100 times better.
Thank you Angel.
You’re right on there. If we don’t have patience, we’re going to keep falling short in the long run.
I think having doubt is ok too. If we get over excited because someone has one good game, then what are we doing but setting ourselves up for disappointment.
With that in mind, let’s not be overally negative either. There’s a big difference between doubting and wrongful criticism.
I think you hit a good point with Joba. Most players are not Joba. They aren’t going to just take to the majors just like that. If you remember, when Melkey played in one of his first games, he dropped a ball in right field. I was actually at the game and needless to say, I remember booing the hell out of him.
Then, he became the Yankees full time CF. There you go…so, we’ll see where it goes from here. Let’s just not throw in the towel though. There’s more baseball to be played and until math tells me we’re done, I keep the faith.
If Gardner really is 100 times better then you won’t have to worry about him getting sent down. If he pans out like you say he will and be a superstar, the Yankees would be crazy to send him down. Relax man, you’re going a little overboard now.
good point Angel…thanks
I was at the game today (last visit to the Stadium)- it was as if the life was sucked out of the place.
The game actually summarized the entire year – no clutch hitting; pitching not so bad and Joe making some odd calls (like not bunting Damon- no idea what he was thinking).
But in the end – it is just a game – and a great place to be with family (I had all my kids -now quite adult and living all over the US) there for a reunion. Nothing like it!
Great way to spend the day with the family, no matter how the team performs. Sounds like in the end it was a great day for you Thomo.
What I think was my last(I say think b/c still trying to get to the last game) was Old Timer’s game…it was sad to leave the stadium that day.
How many times do I need to tell you guys? “brettisgod” is a female. She is either 14 and using her computer while the folks are gone, or she is 52, divorced, and on Valium.
Thats an imposter not me. I am not going to type in all caps anymore stupuid
Chris Pinstriped Scranton thanks for the posts…
Melky turned 24 last week and has over 1000 AB’s in he majors.. He is not toast yet..
Halladay got sent down many years ago and he did just fine.. No I am not saying Melky is in his league I am saying baseball is all about failure and how you deal with it.
The bottom line is I think Yankee fans would accept less free agency and more home grown.. Yes Sabathia would be nice but marginal FA’s are not worth it..
Another Point about the Current state of the Yankees. AS the team is in its current state of imploding – this .500 inconsistency throughout the year – has provided a less than healthy environment for some of the younger players.
Between AROD and his side show circus, the older players either getting traded, injured or worrying about their last year in their contract – I’m sure it has been very hard place for younger guys, Melky, the younger relievers, Brett etc to concentrate and play.
This current team is in a mental funk and this is the first year of the great (lets hope so )transition of the future Yankees. It’s going to be a rough ride and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Yankees don’t make the playoffs this year or next .
But from there, we could go on another 10 year run of the playoffs and that would be cool too.
Keep faith and more important the perspective.
Byrd looking very good so far, certainly better than Rasner/Kennedy would be, and probably better than Hughes too.
imposters annoy me.
I’ll comment on this damn game in awhile, most tiring pathetic game I was at. Don’t even get me started w/ the service BRB
Melky has not shown up to Scranton yet. If I am Brian Cashman, I take note. That isn’t good, I understand you have to get your stuff together, but it shows something.
Listen the more you react to this brettisgod person, the more they will post. Ignore them, they will go away.
Brandon,
I was wondering where some of the regulars were. Not so much of a joyous game but a win is a win.
jennifer, where did you here that about melky? not doubting, just curious.
Melky is behaving badly? Dont they give players rides to the park?
On Chad Jennings blog, sorry for not posting a link.
http://emedia.thetimes-tribune.....fault.aspx
jennifer,
I think he’s standing in front of his building, still waiting for Robbi e to pick him up.
They have a standing Friday night clubbing thing.
I think that there were other issues than his hitting because as bad as it was, it’s hardly the worst on the team.
Maybe something to do with Cano. At least Robbie looks a little livelier.
mel- Agreed, I think it was more to separate Melky and Cano. Maybe they thought Cano was too caught up in their clubbing, and not enough in the game.
First off let me just say to the people who watched this game on TV trust me it was worse in person, a glaring sun around HP, bad service in finding a parking lot spot, nearly got into a fight w/ some idiot Met fan who wussed out..but that’s besides the point.
Sitting in the stands watching 1-9 swinging for the fences actually 1-8 minus Brett, he was the only one trying to just get a hit ! OK where do I begin !
First Sidney Ponson thank you for giving us innings, the jokes on him have to end, the guy pitches w/ guts out there ! actually competes and competes, after the Gordon HR a few morons boo’d but then for the next 6 innings he shut down a KC team that came in relaxed.
Second Robi Cano IDK but you’ve been swinging better eversince we sent down your partner in jokes Melky any correlation in this ?
Third Johnny Damon must have had a long night last night, because he situational swung like a bum, Jetes got a single here a single there (keyword: single)
Fourth Bobby Abreu/Arod/Giambi/Nady they all had the same type of AB one difference was Alex when I went behind the 14 row you could see squeeze the crap out of his bat choking it till it had no air, now if I see this what is the hitting coach preeching ? WHAT EXACTLY ! I used binoculars mini ones and could see Cashman at the top next to Sterling’s booth almost next to the press box area he had a face like WTF when Giambi was at the plate and did nothing. Nady I give him a pass because he basically has worn an S on his chest since he’s arrived you can tell he just had a bad day.
Nearly SIX HOURS TO SCORE 3 RUNS …SIX HOURS !!!!! WTF AM I DOING AT A STADIUM FOR SIX HOURS..COUPLES NEXT TO ME SLEEPING, MY GIRL TOLD ME CAN WE LEAVE IN THE 10TH…AROD COMES UP AGAIN AND SQUEEZES THE CRAP OUT OF THE BAT, I SWEAR YOU CAN SEE HIS FOREARM NERVES WHEN HE DOES IT. I GOT HOME PROBABLY 20-30 MINS. AGO. LONNNNNNNG DAY !!! LONG !
I tivo’d the game put it up watch a certain thing that my friend told me to watch because he knows how much I don’t like Kevin Long anymore…There are what 14 TEAMS…14 ..FOURTEEN IN THE AL…. THE YANKEES RANK NUMBER 11TH IN SCORING w/ RISP
11/14 ! HOW IS KEVIN LONG STILL EMPLOYED ! THE ONE GUY THAT HAD SOLID AB WAS BRETT GARDNER ! AND COINCIDENTALLY HE GOT TIPS FROM HIS AAA HITTING COACH ON WHAT TO FIX AND MADE ADJUSTMENTS, YOU CAN SEE HE TRIED TO DRIVE THE OUTSIDE PITCH TO LEFT AND THE INSIDE TO RF…I STAND HERE TONIGHT STILL PLEADING, CALLING FOR LONG’S FIRING. FIRE HIM ALREADY !!!
Let me just say this team has a way to go before the start dipping into FA bats and that right now I have a headache YOU KNOW YOU GET THAT FROM BEING UNDER A SUN FOR NEARLY SIX HOURS….before I forget much credit to Pudge calling a good game and a throwing out 2 runners(that one is for you JT) and to the BP especially D-Rob and Veras. Now I’m going to take some Tylenol.
Gardner still stinks…
I was at this game…Thanks bobby meacham….this game coulda been over well before the 5 1/2 it actually took.
A-Rod has NEVER looked this bad – not in ’06, not in the postseason, never. Let’s hope the bum snaps out of it.
Gardner at least tries, that is all we ask right? He hits the ball hard, he tries. for the most part everyone is upset that the Yankees look lazy and uninterested at the plate. Gardner hits the ball hard, he tries to do something, he presses like no one on the team is willing to do (besides maybe Pudge). He stands up and takes his hacks, what else do you want? It’s frustrating of course, but lets be real. He tries….Trying might not “cut it” in New York, but what else can you expect? Melky wasn’t trying, Cano hasn’t been trying, Jeter has been a double-play machine, but Gardner is trying. Ponson tries, he battles and even if it’s not his best stuff he tried his hardest. Pettitte battles, Moose battles, Joba battled many a time.
Gardner gets pass in my opinion, even if he is not as good as Melky defensively and whatever else, Gardner is up at bat fouling pitches off, taking pitches, fouling more off and occasionally gets on-base. Could anyone really stand seeing Melky kills rallies over and over, take 2 strikes then ground out, pop-out in non-sacrifice situations?
i vote for the 14 year old w/wet panties
I love this game…Thanks bobby meacham….
