Run for your very lives

ph_134321.jpgI hate to bring this up.

I really do.

I probably shouldn’t.

But Carl Pavano threw six solid innings for Double-A Trenton today at Reading. He allowed one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Are we prepared for the possible return of the Rajah of Rehab, the American Idle himself, Carl Anthony Pavano?

His official rehab assignment is just about over (they last a month for pitchers). The Yankees will either have to activate him or come up with another reason to extend the rehab assignment.

Is “possible crowd riot” a good reason? Are team trainers Gene Monahan and Steve Donohue up to date on the latest treatment for bruised buttocks?

The return of Pavano would be terrific, if only to hear what Moose and The Big G would say. I say bring the Idle back. Nothing has gone according to plan this season, so perhaps Pavano will go 6-0 down the stretch and pitch them into the playoffs.

Sidney Ponson and Pavano in the same rotation with the season on the line. How much would you have been willing to bet on that in March?

    :(

  2. Dennis August 17th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

I hope he pitches a perfect game, and is released soon after. Biggest freaking bum ever. He’s as fragile as my 97 year old great grandmother and a milker of money like no other. Get lost.

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 17th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

This is actually kind of hysterical.

    Irony is bliss.

  4. Showalter '09 August 17th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Pavano will pitch a playoff-clinching game in Fenway

  5. Steve M. August 17th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

I say do it. It would interesting to see how he hurts himself this time.

  6. Dennis August 17th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

But pitch us into the playoffs first. ;-)

  7. Drive 4-5 August 17th, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Nooooo noooooo noooo!!! Bring up Chase Wright. Bring up Orville Wright. Bring up Orville Riddenbacker. Just say NO to Carl Pavano!

  8. Neil August 17th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

I think Wright should be called up for a spot start on Saturday and then Pavano should get the next turn in the rotation. No sense rushing Hughes, but they should replace Rasner with Hughes by Sept 1

  9. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

    Carl Pavano= Savior

Seriosuly, we may as well try him out. He may be motivated for a new contract.

  10. Central CT Yankee August 17th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

You have to give him just a little credit for getting himself ready to pitch after TJS….

  11. Showalter '09 August 17th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Hughes should only pitch when we are eliminated.

  12. Drive 4-5 August 17th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Imagine if Pavano ran off 5 wins? Cashman could then smugly say ” I told you so”. LOL

  13. Josh Johnson August 17th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

I can’t understand why anyone has suggested bringing Chase Wright up to start Saturday. He was given a chance last year and it didn’t work out so well. He still needs more work in the minors.

Pavano or Hughes so start Saturday. I’m leaning towards Pavano making the start, due to the fact he has experience, and also because we have nothing to lose, everything to gain. Might has well try and squeeze 6 starts out of him before he becomes a free agent.

Hughes then gets one more start in the Minors and then we bring him up for the stretch drive.

  14. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

I see how this works Pavano not even a start in AAA and he gets the nod over Chase Wright who all he has done is allow 1.9 runs per game in minor league ball this year. BEAUTIFUL.

  15. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

I can’t understand why anyone has suggested bringing Chase Wright up to start Saturday. He was given a chance last year and it didn’t work out so well. He still needs more work in the minors.

This is like eternal torture how long does he have to pay for that night in Fenway..How long !!!!

  16. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive. August 17th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    Oh my lord.
I’m pretty sure this is one of the signs of the apocalypse.

Seriously though, oh why not. Get em Carl :|

  17. Tyler August 17th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    BRING HIM ON!

Hey, if we’re going down, at least he will be amusing to watch.

  18. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 17th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I prefer Pavano because he’s been there. Hard as it is to believe, the guy has actually pitched in the majors. Quite a few games! Honest to God he has. I know you don’t believe me, but look it up!

    :)

Seriously, I’m for anyone who can help us win. If Pavano can, bring him on.

  19. Phil - 27 in '08 August 17th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

    PavaNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. MoBoy(aka McLovin) August 17th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Chase Wright.Man people smoke some hard stuff.

Bring up Pavano. At least he didn’t use HGH like some other pitchers and first basemen around the Yankees clubhouse for he’ injuries.

You can’t throw Hughes in the majors when he needs to stay in the minors the rest of this and most of next year.Give him time he’s only 21 years old

  21. Phil - 27 in '08 August 17th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

It would be funny to see him shunned in the dugout.

  22. Dee August 17th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

With the season on the line, I wouldn’t mind the comic relief before reality sets in. So the discussion of whether Pavano will pitch is welcomed…as long as he doesn’t actually pitch! If the team goes down this season, I want us to at least go down fighting, not lying down like a bunch of complacent has beens and shameless unprofessional hacks with no respect for the game which is what Carl Pavano is.

  23. E-ROC August 17th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Brandon “(FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)”

I would much rather have Elijah Dukes; though I wouldn’t trade Kennedy for him.

  24. Hightops August 17th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Whatever games he pitched for the Yankees he was decent, bring it. I’ll form the “CAP Club”. But I remember all the “farewell” Pavano news papers and retrospectives, all premature I guess.

  25. Drive 4-5 August 17th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

How ironic would it be if Pavano took Hughes’ rotation spot?

God forbid it happens, but if Phil Hughes gets injured in ’09 like he did in ’07 and ’08, we’ll be hearing about the “next Carl Pavano’.

  26. Josh Johnson August 17th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

This is like eternal torture how long does he have to pay for that night in Fenway..How long !!!!

Well when those home run balls land, I’ll be all for giving him another chance. In all fairness though, I don’t believe he is an 08 option.

  27. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Yankees fans reaction to Carl Pavano’s return

    Viewer Discretion is Advised 8O

  28. Dee August 17th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

“This is like eternal torture how long does he have to pay for that night in Fenway..How long !!!!”

I love Joe Torre but I blame him for leaving Chase Wright out there more than I blame Wright himself for that Fenway disaster. I’d give him another shot if he has proven himself in the minors. Aren’t we a nation of second chances??

  29. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

I think Wright is trade bait. I`d rather see Pavano and I think Cash has been planning this all along. Their were rumors he could be traded at the deadline right?

I could see the Yankees pulling off a blockbuster trade this offseason for a cetnerfielder or a starter if they can’t sign Sabathia or Sheets.

  30. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Dee he’s averaging 5.9 IP per start, 1.9 runs per start, hitters altogther this year are hitting .228 vs him. The only stat I would want to know is how do they do 2nd and 3rd time around the lineup vs him.

  31. lil' m August 17th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Pete, if it happens, please, please, please, please please be the first to interview Moose and anyone else who cares to go on record. It would be too good to see the expression on people’s faces as they answered questions.

  32. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Wright’s K/BB is scarily low. Seems like he`s had more than his fair share of luck down there.

If not Pavano I`d rather see Aceves

  33. Christina August 17th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

    Hangnail… hangnail.. hangnail….

sadly, he may have to be our saviour. Unless he trips on the stairs or something truly bubonic happens to him… Perhaps a body guard may be necessary to have around him at all times to make sure he doesnt trip and fall on anything suspicious.

  34. EricNS August 17th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Pavano pitches them into the payoffs – truly the Bizarro world!

  35. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

    Why not?

The few times he’s actually been on the mound the past 4 years he hasn’t been bad.

I’m sure he wants someone to give him a contract for next year.

Would be wortha laugh at least.

  36. Rafael August 17th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

bring him, what else can we do??
Wang, Joba and now Giese on the DL
Phil Hughes can’t last 4 innings in the AAA (with 5 ER)
    Ian Kennedy…well…

the way that things is going…it’s impossible to get worse

  37. Ross August 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

For all the Pavano haters, what’s the worst that can happen by letting Carl start a game, well besides leaving body fragments in the dugout after someone turns the fan on high. I say, let’s give Carl a chance to redeem himself.

  38. Big C August 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Here’s hoping for the bats to get hot, the patchwork pitching staff to rejuvenate the team and for Hughes and Pavano to come up and be solid along with Pettitte, Muss and Ponson down the stretch. Keep believing, the Yankees are going to make the Playoffs!!!!! KEEP BELIEVING!!!

  39. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

TB just intentionally walked Hamilton with the bases already loaded.

  40. Josh Johnson August 17th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Byrd versus Wheeler with bases loaded and Tampa leading 7-4.

  41. bigjf August 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

This is a good time to bring this up about Pavano. How many starts has he made for the Yanks? I’ve caught 2 of them live, I think it was when we first got him. And I’m going to the game on Saturday in Baltimore. If he starts then, I may need to write a book.

  42. Yankee Fan in Boston August 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

I dont want to see him come up for the rare chance he may succeed and get another contract with someone.

  43. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Can Byrd hit another Walk off GS?

  44. Wangawa August 17th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Carl Pavano, come on down! But make sure to keep him in one of those rooms with the padded walls so he doesn’t hurt himself.

  45. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

    bob are you serious?

  46. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Damn, Byrd strikes out to end the game. Maddon’s stupid strategy worked.

  47. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Tampa is out of reach anyway. It doesn’t really matter

  48. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive. August 17th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Wrap Carl up in bubble wrap just in case?
Maybe he should wear some type of protective suit while pitching?

  49. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Oh, I know they’re out of reach, just kind of hoping for a miracle and a 10 game skid for them. lol

Although I guess we really should be rotting for them, Minn., and CHW at this point.

  50. DFox August 17th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

“Tampa is out of reach anyway. It doesn’t really matter”

And 2 days ago the Red Sox were almost unanimously “out of reach”.

  51. bennie August 17th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I hope he trips over his ego and hurt his hair and is out for the season!

  52. ERâ„¢ (The Final Seasonâ„¢) August 17th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

I think Carl will do very well. He’s just the shot-in-the-arm that this team needs.

  53. Rudy From LI August 17th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

we’re paying him might as well see if he can pitch. We need some help maybe he can do some great things if not what does it hurt. I’ve seen crazier things happen.

  54. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Okay, one sim I saw had the Yankees winning the division something like 1.4 pecent of the time.

They`re just about out of reach.

  55. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Whatever happens, Pavano needs one more appearance at the Stadium. Just so that the fans have an opportunity to boo him out of the place. lol

  56. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Mike Chase Wrights K/BB ratio is 72/43 in 122.0 IP, he’s had 4 starts in AAA.

In AAA in 23.2 IP he has faced 96 batters out of the possible 71, that’s 25 extra outs in 4 starts combined. We can round that off to 24 innings in 4 starts, that’s 6 IP per start that’s 18 required outs per start.. that’s 5.3 extra batters faced per start..not bad if you ask me.

  57. Mike NYY- Win or Die..... Please? August 17th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

It would be awesome if the stadium erupted into laughter when he gets announced.

  58. danielle (get better joba we need you!) August 17th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

why don’t the yankee players like pavano?

  59. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

If anything it has to be the WC.

I don’t think it’s will happen, but if the Yanks could go a run you never know.

I still think Minn. is gonna fall. They have a brutal road schedule at the end of the month due to the RNC convention being there.

And as bad as we have been, you realize we have a better record since the break than Boston?

Like I said I don’t think we can make it because we just stink so bad, but you never know I guess.

  60. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

why don’t the yankee players like pavano?

Danielle lovely name btw (that’s my old exs. name) anyway are you serious, do you reeeeeeeally want to know ?

  61. DFox August 17th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

“Mike Chase Wrights K/BB ratio is 72/43 in 122.0 IP, he’s had 4 starts in AAA.”

They don’t have enough time left to fool around with Wright. They have to bring up the guy who they think gives them the BEST chance to win that day.

You can’t have Wright or Hughes coming up and pitching to their 7-9 era’s. It’s too late in the season for that now. Wright’s way too much of a risk. They probably know their best chance is with Pavano, because he’s a proven MLB pitcher.

  62. SamVA August 17th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Does anyone know who’s pitching sunday?
I realize Saturday is unknown and I’m going to the whole series haha.

  63. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Sunday would be Rasner’s turn I think.

  64. danielle (get better joba we need you!) August 17th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

well if im asking obviously i do lol

  65. YankeeVIP August 17th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

espn says matsui will be activated on tues.

so now what. damon in CF, Nady in Left and Matsui as DH.

not bad. I hope they dont take Nady out of the lineup. he is been the only consistent hitter.

    so:
    Damon CF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    Arod 3B
    Matsui DH
    Nady LF
    Giambi 1b
    Cano 2b
    Irod/Molina C

not bad,but our lineup always looks good and they never hit!!!!

  66. DFox August 17th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

“Like I said I don’t think we can make it because we just stink so bad, but you never know I guess.”

Are the Yankees really worse than the Red Sox? What is the Red Sox rotation with an average Beckett, not a good Beckett?

Beckett hasn’t been good the whole season, and after Joba Chamberlain outdueled him in front of his Fenway fanboys, he’s never been the same. I’d be pretty embarrassed too if I got outplayed by the 22 year old who I was shouting at from the dugout steps a year ago.

  67. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Are the Yankees really worse than the Red Sox? What is the Red Sox rotation with an average Beckett, not a good Beckett?

Whether they are or not, they are 5 games ahead of us with 39 left.

    That’s tough to make up.

  68. They shoot horses don't they? August 17th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

    Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Damn, Byrd strikes out to end the game. Maddon’s stupid strategy worked.

Maybe Joe G. should take note of such a stupid strategy the next time Mussina faces Manny.

Or maybe he could take a cue on how to get a players attention. Like when he pulled Upton off the field the other night for not hustling and sat him for the next game to boot.

He’s in the middle of a pennant race and he sits one of his best players to make a point.

I imagine Cano could use some similar handling to get his attention.

I don’t think Joe G. has the grapes for either of those moves.

I would trade Joe M. for Joe G. in a heartbeat.

  69. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

DFox for me it’s not based on experience anymore alot of teams are getting burned by that, I’ll use Rasner and Giese as an example, Rasner has more MLB experience yet Giese had better results in minor league ball outings and came up and showed it, I take more account on results then the experience factor, I want a guy that wants to compete as a 5th starter, someone w/ a chip on his shoulder but also is showing he is getting results. If we were being fair that guy would be Chase Wright but again we have justify Pavano’s existance on the 40 man even though he’s been more than a year away from pitching against actual ML batters.

  70. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Maybe Joe G. should take note of such a stupid strategy the next time Mussina faces Manny.

That would be just lovely to against Manny this year again.

  71. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Maybe Joe G. should take note of such a stupid strategy the next time Mussina faces Manny.

You know Manyy’s in LA now don’t you?

Mussina may never face him again.

Unless it’s the World Series and then I don’t think anyone will have the nerve to moan about Girardi anymore. LOL

  72. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

I would trade Joe M. for Joe G. in a heartbeat.

Grass is always greener on that other side.

  73. CanIGetAMooseCall August 17th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

“Pavano will pitch a playoff-clinching game in Fenway”

Yes, next season for the Red Sox.

  74. They shoot horses don't they? August 17th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Manny or some other equally dangerous hitter. The point is not to let the other teams best hitter rake on your team.

  75. Redding August 17th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

Give Girardi Tampa’s young talent and he will look like a genius too.

Give him overhyped young talent like Hughes, Melky, and Kennedy and he looks like a terrible manager.

  76. YankeeJosh August 17th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

    Brandon,

Pete always says that Minor League numbers are deceptive. Kennedy had great numbers at Triple A and has bombed at the big league level. The Yankees must feel that Wright doesn’t yet have what it takes to succeed at the Majors despite his good Minor League numbers. I’ll trust them on that.

  77. steve August 17th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

i’d resign giambi to a 2 yr/$30 million doller deal with a team option for a 3rd year

  78. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Manny or some other equally dangerous hitter. The point is not to let the other teams best hitter rake on your team.

Yeh walk in a run w/ basesloaded and risk losing that game on the last out is so genius..again Byrd choked tonight, but let that situation happen again 7/10 times I guarantee your not praising Maddon

  79. DFox August 17th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

“If we were being fair that guy would be Chase Wright but again we have justify Pavano’s existance on the 40 man even though he’s been more than a year away from pitching against actual ML batters.”

You COMPLETELY missed my point. I’m talking about what they did in the majors. This isn’t the time where you can say “Oh Chase Wright is pitching well in the minors” and pray that he doesn’t pitch how he did when he was in the majors in 2007. What leads you to believe he won’t pitch like he did in ’07? Might he be good, yes, but you can’t take that risk now.

Pavano was good in the MAJORS. He’s your SAFEST choice. They can’t put their money on minor leaguers now who looked lost in the majors. Don’t you remember how Ian Kennedy pitched a week ago?

  80. Corey August 17th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

You people need to relax. He may come back better than ever from that surgery….Perhaps Im optimistic, but giving Pavano a shot is no worse than throwing Rasner out there. They paid alot of money for this jerk, the least he can do is pitch well right now. It may get him a new contract somewhere.

  81. Patrick Bateman August 17th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Pavano had more wins in 2007 than Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy do combined this season.

  82. They shoot horses don't they? August 17th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Hey, I admit that I was in favor of Joe G. to be hired but the results just aren’t there. And this team is better (baseball card wise than the Rays) but obviously not where it counts (on the field). They have woefully underperformed and I think that is a management problem.

  83. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 17th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

YankeeJosh if that’s the feeling then deal him away. It’s ridiculous to have him in his mid 20′s doing what he is doing in the minors on the 40 man roster. Atleast showcase him more times than Igawa.

  84. Bob(The Original) August 17th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Exaclty Brandon. Worst case would be Hamilton hits it out and the games is tied.

It worked, so he looks smart for doing it, but intentionally giving up a run and then bringing the winning run to the plate is pretty stupid IMO.

Didn’t Showalter do the same thing with Bonds once when he was in AZ?

Here’s how I see it. None of you wanted Ponson to pitch an inning for this team. There was pontification in this blog how he was a disgrace and should never wear pinstripes again.

If you all feel the same way about Pavano, suit him up and watch him pitch us into the post season.

The guy has everything to prove, not just to this team and city, but to himself. He also is pitching for his next contract.

    The motivation is there.

Does that mean he’ll be awesome? No.

But I’d rather see him on the mound than Hughes next week.

Hughes is a kid who needs time in the minors.

I’d be fine with Chase Wright getting the call too though, but I’m not going to freak out if Pavano gets the nod at all.

    He may surprise you.

Yup and Kent grounded out, still a stupid strategy IMO.

its funny how kennedy and igawa got so many chances and wright had to come up from AA and pitch in Fenway vs. Dice=K trying to avoid the sweep and that game is still held against him.

give him a shot… he is a better option than hughes

Funny thing is everyone makes fun of Pavano for being on the DL all the time, someone tell me where Phil Hughes has been the last two years?

If Hughes keeps up this DL thing with mysterious cracked ribs, the only “franchise” he’s gonna know is McDonalds

  91. Jose August 18th, 2008 at 12:12 am

    LOL Patrick

Sad, but true. That is why Hughes is called Pavano Jr. Both of them seem to find a way to get injured in the most inexplicable ways, even in rehabs they get injured.

  92. timo August 18th, 2008 at 12:13 am

Re Showalter and Bonds: it wasn’t Kent who made the last out and it wasn’t a ground out. Guy named Brent Mayne hit a line drive to right on a 3-2 count. Fortunate for Buck that it was caught. And that his pitcher didn’t throw ball four. Final was 8-7. I live in the Bay Area and happened to be watching the game.

  93. PJH August 18th, 2008 at 12:16 am

i’d resign giambi to a 2 yr/$30 million doller deal with a team option for a 3rd year

Thankfully, for our sakes, you are NOT the GM. That would be a terrible contract. You cant sign a mid-30′s, can’t hit his weight, can’t field at all first baseman to a multi-year deal potentially 45 mill. If youre gonna throw that kind of money at an old guy like Giambi, you might as well go out and get Texeira.

  94. Hughes Dynasty August 18th, 2008 at 12:16 am

I am very disappointed in Phil. I’m almost ready to throw him in the Christian Garcia/Humberto Sanchez vault, the “I’ll believe it when I see it” one.

Maybe we’re just hoping against hope that he regains his Trenton form. But I think most of us are coming to the realization that he is no longer that dominant young stud you build around (like Joba is now), due to injuries and mechanical/pitching changes, he is now a middle rotation guy. Which isin’t bad, by any stretch because teams need that, but I doubt he will ever become the Mark Prior phenom that he was on a trajectory for.

  95. george August 18th, 2008 at 12:18 am

  97. Guiseppe Franco August 18th, 2008 at 12:20 am

I don’t really care if Hughes turns into a frontline starter or not. I just hope he turns out to be a very good major league pitcher.

Let’s hope Hank reads this blog.

  103. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:28 am

See that Tejas had a chance to win it in the end there. I don’t see the brilliance of IBB-ing Hamilton. Hamilton would’ve been the tying run and Byrd was the winning one. They walked Hamilton and a run scored. It worked out so Maddon looks like a genius, but they could’ve lost the game off Byrd’s bat.

They go home to host the Angels, who didn’t fare so well against the Tribe. Garland v. Cy-Young-Stine.

Boston on the road to Baltimore. Lester v. Guthrie.

The central co-leaders are hosting two of the crappiest teams in the league-cellar dwellers from the west.

Good win by Waipio who go to 2-0 in pool play with a 10-2 thrashing of Florida after being down 2-0. They must’ve been inspired by the Yankees!

“The Yanks need as many of those guys as possible when you consider that teams like BOS and TB have rotations that are only going to get better.”

The problem is that the pitching has been fairly decent. It’s the everyday lineup that isn’t holding up it’s end of the bargain.

With help from the minors 2 or 3 years away yet and even then only 1 or 2 potential stars they are in a bad situation IMO.

They need in the next few years a catcher, SS, CF, and 1B. Thats a lot of holes to fill. And sure you can trade some of the minor league pitching they have been stockpiling but when it comes up and flames out like Hughes & Kennedy even that is a dicey proposition.

Its sad to think that a pitcher of Mo’s caliber may not make another world series game appearance before his career is over.

  109. Yazman (David) August 18th, 2008 at 12:36 am

Give Pavano a chance and don’t rush Hughes. Phil will have his day — let him dominate AAA for a bit first.

I’ve hated Pavano’s work ethic. But every day is a new day, and he’s trying hard now (for whatever reason).

Pavano was 18-8 in his last full year, and his career ERA is 4.27. Phil’s ERA in 6 starts this year doubled that. I say try Comeback Carl.

  110. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Tabata is starting to finish hard. He’s hitting .359 in AA Altoona and already has 1/5 of the production he’s done at Trenton. When will people factor that Trenton is not an easy ball park to hit in :(

  113. Park August 18th, 2008 at 12:44 am

This is why they needed to improve the rotation during the off season last year.

You cannot rely on three rookie pitchers.

They are lucky that Joba has fulfilled his promise.

It was totally unrealistic to expect Hughes and Kennedy to as well.

No team that goes after rings has 3 rookies in a rotation.

  114. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:45 am

  115. Masterson August 18th, 2008 at 12:46 am

Hughes, Horne and Kennedy are why prospects are just that. Prospects. And shouldn’t be treated as though they are all future all stars.

  116. Tidrow August 18th, 2008 at 12:47 am

Giambi is one to talk if he’s criticizing Pavano. The guy missed a full 3 months due to a mysterious pituitary ailment. Only reason he gets positive press is because he humors these sycophantic writers who feel that he’s their buddy just because he gives them the time of day. The Giambi era should come to an end as soon as his contract runs out.

  117. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:48 am

    Park,

Based on what Hughes and Kennedy showed at the end of ’07, they thought it was worth the risk.

If even one of those pitchers was able to stay in the majors it would’ve worked out. But since both bombed everyone can do their 20/20 thing.

Losing Wanger has really hamstrung this team. But nothing beats the death of Risp.

  118. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:50 am

Tidrow, they’ve been waiting for years to get rid of Giambi. We don’t need to pay him $22M to be the life of the clubhouse.

  119. dan 771 August 18th, 2008 at 12:52 am

i would have traded jackson before tabata

jackson is a strikeout machine who is a .275 hitter at the ML level

tabata was a guy who at 18 had an advanced understanding of the strike zone and projected to always be a .300 hitter with gap power…. just like cano.

pirates are going have an all-world OF with tabata-mclouth-mccutchen.

we traded the wrong guy. had a feeling after injury he was going to rake.

  121. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 12:54 am

    From Chad Jennings’ blog:

Hitting coach Butch Wynegar said the Yankees want Melky Cabrera (left) to work on his patience at the plate, so four walks tonight was surely a good sign. Cabrera’s one hit was a single to right, and he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. It was one of T.J. Bohns three outfield assists.

“He said, ‘I just wanted to show hustle,’” Wynegar said.

Wynegar said they talked about the difference between hustle and bad base running, but you have to be happy with the fact Cabrera knows he’s down here to prove himself.

“I didn’t plan on seeing Melky until Tuesday,” Wynegar said. “For Melky to show up today, that showed me something.”

Certainly encouraging and it’s good that he showed patience. 3 walks. Even Abreu would be impressed. And rather jealous. Haven’t seen too many BB’s from Bobby. Doesn’t he get like a 100 free passes a year or something?

    From the recap:

Japan starter Yu Darvish, likely to join “Dice-K” as a big-league starter one day, got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second, then struck out Cuba’s cleanup hitter Alexander Malleta with the bases loaded in fourth. But after opening the fifth with a walk and a hard-hit double, he was gone. Darvish (0-1) allowed four runs in four innings, with four walks, seven hits and six strikeouts.

That’s all fine and dandy and I don’t disagree with that. But they still have to stack the rotation as much as possible because of their main rivals’ rotations.

They can afford to overhaul the lineup for next season and take a step back if they do whatever they can to reinforce the rotation.

That’s why they will go really hard after Sabathia. And I expect Pettitte or Moose – perhaps both – back next season as well.

The plan may be to start Hughes in Scranton next season and would be the first one called up when a starter is needed.

I think she’s talking about Beckett. And I tend to agree.

No surprise, he’s never put back-to-back dominant seasons together. Most of his “ace” acclaims some from his postseason success.

Truthfully, I’ll take Halladay over Beckett any day of the week – and I would have said that a year ago as well.

Halladay doesn’t have a postseason record – but he’s had a far better regular season career than Beckett has. It’s not even close.

You really have to hope that Pavano will stay out of trouble this time. He’s might have taken the Yankees all the way to the bank, but I mean does anyone have that disregard for any team? He fought to stay healthy in FLA, and when the Yankees signed him he was the best pitcher available, and they got less money. I’d like to hope he’ll do his best to keep from being injured.

Tommy John isn’t something you do on purpose, the Porche accident was.

according to this article Pavano wasn’t in the clubhouse when the press was allowed in after the game. Already with the team?

“His breaking ball was flat,” Franklin said. “That’s a strong indication that your legs aren’t feeling too good and is a bit tired. I remember before when I went to get him (in Tues day’s game), he said he was glass; that was about 50 pitches. Tonight, I didn’t feel like I had to extend him at all, which is not a good thing. Each start he’s gotten worse. At 80 pitches and you’ve still got good stuff vs AA but why call him up ?, he’s coming I guess. He’s coming whether NY likes it or not.”

Thanks Prete I find this comment odd especially from Tony Franklin :?

    Brandon,

LOL. You didn’t close your italics tag. I was looking for the “He’s coming whether NY likes it or not.”

Wait … Giambi is ripping Pavano for being hurt? The same Giambi who begged out of a World Series start in 2003 for a mysterious non-injury? A Series won by Pavano’s team? Giambi is beyond pathetic. Maybe Pavano would be able to play more if he took whatever Giambi is on to fuel his various “comeback” seasons. Sad that all the writers and most fans on this blog kiss Stash’s injected rear.

I like some of things that the ‘stache brings to the game-intensity and a good eye at the plate. But he should serve as a cautionary tale. We shouldn’t sign Mark Texeira for ten years. Although the ‘stache has had some productive years with the Yankees, he wasn’t worth the money that they paid him and besides, like Texeira now, we signed the ‘stache at his peak in 2001.

Sidney Ponson and Pavano in the same rotation with the season on the line. How much would you have been willing to bet on that in March?

I think a lot of people could have guessed something like that in March. Perhaps not specifically Ponson, since we had DFA’s him previously, but a similar kind of guy.

From what I saw on Yankees boards etc, at least half the fans expected Hughes and Kennedy to not have great years. It was too much of a risk with pitchers that were not ready. There was no back-up plan then, so this is the result. It was predictable.

If Brian Cashman is back in 2009, then we really know it’s the end of an era — the new Hank and Hal show will only be about the money, not about winning.

Sure, bring up Pavano. Let’s have fun with it. He owes us. He’s also needing to showcase himself for his new team — maybe he’ll do a great job.

But that’s what the Yankees have been doing for years now, signing players at the their peak and then watching their slow decline. Although I love Johnny Damon, and he’s having a good year, he’s a perfect example. Giambi, Abreu, Sheffield, Mussina. THey even did this with Posada, one of their own. The team is filled with past-their-primers who can’t turn their reputations into runs. You think A-Rod is going to remain A-Rod for nine more years? He can’t carry a team even in his prime. Nice pre-retirement club, lots of star quality, mediocre results on the field.

It’s better to part company with a player a year too soon than a year too late.
    It’s been proven many times.

Hughes Dynasty, you’re giving up on Phil as a potential stud because he has one bad start in AAA, probably due to a dead arm period? Now he’s gone from a possible #1 to a #3? He’s only just turned 22. I’m not directing this to you, but wow – Yankee fans are impatient. They love to label young players without even giving them a real chance. It’s amazing to me that just a few starts from earlier this season completely wipe out what we saw from a 21 year old last year.

I certainly acknowlege that Phil to this point appears to be injury prone, but he has had no arm problems………which Joba currently has. Yes, I know it’s mild, but it’s still an arm injury.

  165. Betsy August 18th, 2008 at 8:35 am

Fans just amaze me sometimes. They are on comnpletely different pages than Cashman and the front office. Fans want and expect to win immediately, but they are just going to have to be patient. The Yankees’ plan is to build (and win, hopefully) mainly through the farm system. Anyone judging them now is silly.

Those still living in the past re: the trade that didn’t happene are also, IMO, silly. Again – the Yankees understood what they were giving up for 2008 in not acquiring the Twins’ ace. They were looking beyond 2008, however, and fans don’t seem to get this. Plus, most have already judged Phil a bust…….which the Yankees have not.

  166. Yankee2123 August 18th, 2008 at 9:35 am

Everyone is on board for getting rid of Pavano, but the Yanks have an interest in keeping him around, and rehabbing him. Remember, they hold an option on him for 13M next year. Although he’s not worth it, if he can come back and pitch healthy, he could have value in a trade. It’s a big IF. But in today’s pitching market, there are alot of teams that would take Pavano, especially in the NL. If an injury prone player like Mike Hampton can keep getting chances, Pavano can keep pitching somewhere. It’s just that he isn’t cut out for NY, and both sides fooled themselves into thinking that he was.

  167. Yankee2123 August 18th, 2008 at 9:40 am

    @ Betsy

Cashman is not a good evaluator of talent. I would give credit on the past few drafts to Damon Oppenheimer. It does take time to develop prospects, but the road to pitching for the Yankees is harder than anywhere else, and that will never change. It’s the biggest stage in the world, and players either rise to the occasion, or wilt undr the pressure. Players like Joba are cut out for NY. Ian Kennedy isn’t. The Jury’s still out on Hughes. But Cashman should know his prospects better than he does, and that’s why he overplayed his hand on Santana, and we’re sitting 9.5 games out in third place.

  168. TGFizeek August 18th, 2008 at 9:45 am

    Pavano for setup man!

  169. Bob August 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am

You can see it now…. he implodes yet again, and I-Rod decks him on the mound and becomes an all time favorite Yankee. Then as he enters the dugout, Jorge decks him again with his good arm. Pavano then retires and lives in his own MRI tube sadly ever after.

    RIP Idle.

  170. Lauren August 18th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

i honest to god believe he will find a way out of the game…like pitch 2 innings and claim back spasms. -or- he will pitch beautifully, and somehow end up back on the DL after the game. we need help but i don’t need any of pavano’s false hope during these troubled times. let him sit, he hasn’t earned the right to showcase himself to the scouts in the bigs to help land next years contract.

the most disgusting part about this is that you know he will sign elsewhere and win 20 games next year.

  171. IT'S MADONNA'S FAULT August 18th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

weel i tell you i believe in him instead of injuries he’s a god pitcher sadly linked with stupid injuries and long rehabing programs, i think that he can give us a hand well not literally cause this guy seems that he’s falling apart.

  172. Marc W August 18th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

I can’t wait to see all the rants when he returns

  173. MJR (Shut Up Steve Phillips) August 18th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Pavanao will join rotation and win all 5 of his starts.

Yanks will miraculously enter playoffs and in the ALCS, Pavano somehow makes it as the game 7 pitcher.

Unfortunately, right after warm ups….he tears both achilles tendons while standing up from the toilet.

Pavano is seen non-chalantly smiling before he is loaded into the ambulance where the MTs (cheered by Yankee fans) mercifully euthanize the injured animal.
