    Dang, we get halladay..

  2. AlbanyYankee August 18th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

    This could get ugly.

  3. RalphieD August 18th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
  4. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Love that Rasner vs Burnett matchup. Only thing better is if we could get Pavano in there.

  5. Stephen August 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Much as we deride him, Ponson’s been a real gamer. Don’t underestimate his ability to grind it out.

  6. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Friday night rainout in Boston gets the Yankees Burnett instead of Litsch.

  7. Wangawa August 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

    ouch

  8. Someone Else August 18th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

“Friday night rainout in Boston gets the Yankees Burnett instead of Litsch.”

    :-(

And, instead of giving Halladay a day off and facing the Red Sox, we get him.

    Blegh.

  9. 86w183 August 18th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

How many knew Ponson had a lower ERA than Burnett?

I haven’t seen anyone listing Big Sid as a possible # 5 for 2009, but you gotta give the guy his due. He’s made nine starts for the Yankees, 5 “quality” starts (2-0, 1.71) , two decent ones (1-1, 4.73) and two lousy ones ( 0-1,14.00).

  10. hank hal August 18th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    Rasner vs. Brunett?
Ponson (who is due for a bad game) vs. Hallday?
Pettitte against a lefty we’ve never seen?

Not getting swept is a major accomplishment.

  11. saucY August 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    “I haven’t seen anyone listing Big Sid as a possible # 5 for 2009″

i don’t have a link for reference, but i spoke about this with my dad over this past weekend ;)

  12. JR August 18th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Ponson isn’t really the worry, it’s what the Yankees offense is going to be like against Halladay.

  13. Timothy Clougher August 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Don’t forget the defense, if we bench Gardner.

  14. 86w183 August 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Funny saucY— not endorsing the idea… but I’d certainly offer him arbitration to control him for some purpose. Believe it or not, Senor Ponson is now an asset.

  15. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Looking at the pitching match ups – I start to think maybe I should stop laughing at the thought of Pavano’s return…

  16. ard August 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

The only thing we have going for us is toronto is not a good hitting team so a score of like 3-2 might do it.

  17. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

“And, instead of giving Halladay a day off and facing the Red Sox, we get him.

    Blegh”

They’d have seen Halladay regardless as he was slated to go Friday night and again on Wednesday (vs. Pettitte). Burnett was scheduled to go on Sunday, after Marcum. With Hallday and Marcum getting a bumped up a day, Litsch gets skipped and Burnett moved up to Tuesday.

  18. Timothy Clougher August 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

    ard:

    Tell that to Beckett.

  19. William Buckner August 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

“How many knew Ponson had a lower ERA than Burnett?”

I’ll do you one better, he has a better then Beckett.

  20. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

” toronto is not a good hitting team”

At this point – neither are Yanks…

  21. daveman August 18th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

And if things starting going wrong we can have the guys yell “Ha!” to rattle the Blue Jays.

  22. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I think we can take 2 of the 3. Don’t ask me which ones because I’ve been wrong all season on my predictions. Obviously the first game is very important.

At least we don’t have a bullpen like the Mets. Sheesh.

  23. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

The Razzy/Burnett is the reason why this team cant and wont make the playoffs.

  24. Timothy Clougher August 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I hope that “Babe Ruth” Scutaro isn’t in the line-up, that guy always kills us.

  25. Andrew August 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Purcey will probably throw the best game out of the 3. After all, the Yankees have never faced him before.

  26. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Don’t forget the defense, if we bench Gardner.

defense is overrated Timothy don’t you know Matsui gonna go Godzilla on these birds.

  27. BB August 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

If Yankees can get Roy Hallday,I will take off my hat.
Even though I adore Holladay, but still hope Yankees win.

  28. Timothy Clougher August 18th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    Brandon:

    :)

  29. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    Stephen,

Grind what? Hogies? Deep dish pizza? j/k

I like the underdog so Ponson’s a fave of mine because (knock on wood) he’s resisted the curses of the LoHud blog so far!

  30. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Damon in CF, Matsui DH = 9-2 victory

Gardner comes in the 8th inning as a defensive replacement.

  31. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

“Damon in CF, Matsui DH = 9-2 victory

Gardner comes in the 8th inning as a defensive replacement.”

Lofty expectations against the best starter in the AL.

  32. 86w183 August 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Everyone needs to stop worrying about winning two of three or anything else and just follow tyhe philosophy of noted deep thinker Mariano Duncan.

We play today, We win today. Dassitt

  33. Dennis August 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

    Roy Halladay, ’nuff said.

  34. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

“We play today, We win today. Dassitt”

    lol.

  35. Andrew August 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

A.J. Burnett is the best starter in the AL now? I assume you meant Hallady, who starts Thursday. Then again, by Thursday Gardner will be starting again once Matsui goes 0-4 with 3 Ks, all 3 while the bases are loaded, and reports that his knee really isn’t better, apologizes to the team for taking away Brett Gardner’s playing time, and leaves the team to be with his sketched wife in Japan.

  36. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

We play tomorrow. We win tomorrow.

  37. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I can’t wait to see Johnny in CF god knows he’s my first choice to roam CF, watch those runners misjudge that arm.

  38. JR Yankees August 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

We are underdogs as a team going into this series, not just Ponson.

This series will make or break this season, in my opinion. If we somehow get through this week going 5-1 or 4-2 we will be in okay shape.

Let’s all hope the bats show up and Matsui can contribute and help spark a nice run.

  39. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

“We play today, We win today. Dassitt”

    That is soooo 1996…

  40. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

halliday is 2-1 vs the yankees this year, last year he was 1-0 in three starts. its not like he’s cy young or something!

he’s 12-5 in his career vs. the yankees in 29 starts, which means 15 times he hasnt beaten us. and the jay’s offense is worse than ours.

  41. ramon August 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Mussina, Pettitte, Ponson, Rasner, and Pavano will carry us to the postseason.

  42. rconn23 August 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

We play next season. Hopefully, with the right free agent signings, trades and shedding of bad contracts/dead weight, we are able to win next season.

    Um, Dassit.

  43. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

sorry, 27 starts, 29 games total.

  44. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“and the jay’s offense is worse than ours.”

True, but the Jay’s pitching and defense is better. Jays have a slightly better run differential than the Yanks on the year.

  45. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“We play next season. Hopefully, with the right free agent signings, trades and shedding of bad contracts/dead weight, we are able to win next season.

    Thats fair.

  46. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

‘I party tonight. I get 2 hours sleep. I play half asleep tomorrow. Go out after Game and party more. Dats it.’
    -Robbie Cano

  47. Gary (avoid the loss column) August 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

How the Yankees move runners along will determine the outcome of the Blue Jay series.
Seeing guys like A-Rod, Giambi, and Cano not strictly swinging for the fences and giving themselves up when situational hitting calls for it will go a long way to producing runs.

  48. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

‘We get bases loaded with no outs. ARod strikes Out. Giambi hits into double play. Dats it.’

  49. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter. August 18th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

According to Meatloaf, 2 out of three ain’t bad…

  50. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

-“I hit the bench and I pinch run or outfield replace dats it only in the 8th or 9th dats it”-

    Brett Gardner

  51. Aaron August 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

jays will win 2 of 3 imo

  52. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter. August 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Imagine 3 out of 3. Imagine if the Yankees could pull that off.

    Ya nevah know!

  53. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

“According to Meatloaf, 2 out of three ain’t bad…”

2 of 3 for the rest of the year gets the Yankees to 91 wins. You think that’s enough?

  54. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

jays will win 2 of 3 imo

    Yup.

  55. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

The real question to ask yourself is with both teams scoring a ton of runs in the last game. Which team should have saved some of those runs for this series? Hopefully Toronto ran out of them.

Who gets the call up first? Pavano or Hughes?

  56. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

“‘We get bases loaded with no outs. ARod strikes Out. Giambi hits into double play. Dats it.’

starting tomorrow, itll be “we get bases loaded with no out, arod strikes out, matsui clears the bases with a double , giambi scores another run wiht a ground out.

    dats it.

  57. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

after a wild pitch i guess.

  58. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

“Who gets the call up first? Pavano or Hughes?”

Hughes got thumped last night, but I’d still go with him.

  59. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

A-Rod is only phenomenal in odd numbered years look it up.

  60. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

pavano has further to go. he ran outta gas early his first two games at trenton.

  61. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

starting tomorrow, itll be “we get bases loaded with no out, arod strikes out, matsui clears the bases with a double , giambi scores another run wiht a ground out.

    dats it.

    more like

“we get bases loaded with no out, arod strikes out, Matsui pops and Gimbi K’s looking”

    dats it

  62. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

““Who gets the call up first? Pavano or Hughes?”

Hughes got thumped last night, but I’d still go with him.”

Hughes needs more time there is a reason he got hit around, his arm is tired he hasn’t thrown this many pitches in several months give him another start at least bring up the cancer if he pitches poorly bring up Phil.

  63. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

“According to Meatloaf, 2 out of three ain’t bad…”

Unfortunately, our lovable bunch of underachievers have dug themselves a hole so big that winning 2 of 3 in each series from here on out won’t be good enough.

It probably will take around 94 wins to capture the Wild Card. With 38 games remaining, the Yanks need to win 28 of 38 ( 74%) to achieve 94 wins. They need to sweep this series and the Baltimore series to have a shot.

  64. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    correction

“we get bases loaded with no out, arod strikes out, Matsui pops up and Giambi K’s looking”

    dats it

  65. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter. August 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

“2 of 3 for the rest of the year gets the Yankees to 91 wins. You think that’s enough?”

Well I was just thinking for this series only because the Jays have been playing very good ball since Gaston took over. And the Mets have been playing very good ball since Manuel took over.

You know I have heard a lot of people say that baseball is one of the sports where managers matter the least. So then I look at the Jays and the Mets – and the White Sox – and say, oh yeah?

  66. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

jocks are no good at math.

we play today, we win today!

  67. Fran August 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Maybe the Yanks won’t call up either Pavano or Hughes for the week-end start. Girardi had said that if neither one was ready there were other options down at SWB they were looking at. Chase Wright? I don’t know who else.

  68. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    Formula to sweeping the Jays.

Intentially walk Scuttaro and Rios. Scuttaro is the Bambino against us. Rios bats .1000.

Get Halliday and Burnetts pitch count up. Take pitches!!

Have Arod scream “I got it” running the bases.

Make sure Jeter doesnt slide head first on any base.

    Keep them from stealing bases.

Pitchers keep us in games and hitters hit when runners on.(easier said than done)

    =SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!

  69. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

    From Heyman via MLBTR:

“Heyman says there was never any negotiations between the Yankees and Scott Boras regarding Gerrit Cole. The Yanks would’ve offered $4MM+, but Cole preferred college (at his father’s urging).”

Some risk by Cole and his family, but you have to believe the kid’s father saw considerable downside in sending a supposedly immature kid across the country with millions of dollars. Sometimes father really does know best.

  70. raymagnetic August 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Hey, I’m a little late to the party but I must say that I love how people feel that Matsui must earn the right to play but Brett Gardner somehow deserves to play. That is too funny to me. I also love how small ball is suddenly better than a team of sluggers, again that’s just too funny to me. I would take a team of A-Rods over a team with 18 Brett Gardner’s on the field at the same time, but that’s just my opinion.

  71. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger) August 18th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Fredo that kid is dead to me.

  72. Bob(The Original) August 18th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Be a miracle if we don’t get swept in this series.

Be shocked if we score more than 5 runs the whole 3 games combined.

“we play today, we lose today, dasit.”

  73. stuart August 18th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

the problem is the COle clan should of informed the Yanks of this before the draft which they did not do.

  74. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

raymagnetic is that you??? tm?? Imposter?? Will the real ray please stand up.

Who’s dissing Arod ? the whole team is full of sluggers not more than 2 know how to manufactor a run, the talk about Matsui is more because Damon would play CF combine that and inability of this team to hit it’s not a good combo, the inability of manufactoring a run it doesn’t factor in well. Again you want a comparison ?

    2008 = 2006

    Matsui = Sheffield
    Gardner = Melky

Go ahead break up the little spark that they could have left.

  76. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter. August 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Life is a crap shoot. So no matter who comes up, it could be good, it could be mediocre, it could be a disaster. Just like the saying that says on any given day, any team has the potential to win.

That said, I go with Pavano if he has been getting the job done. The one thing we have with him – if he has been getting the job done – well two things: he has been a major league pitcher, and he (I would hope) desperately wants to prove himself.

At this point I don’t go with someone who might get stage fright.

  77. Time to PUT UP, or SHUT UP, boys....whatta ya got ??? August 18th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    26-12 is the goal
( to get to 92-70, likely needed for a playoff spot )
…..if we get swept by Toronto….anyone that thinks we can go 26-9 REALLY needs his/her head examined….

  78. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

“the problem is the COle clan should of informed the Yanks of this before the draft which they did not do.”

Actually, knowing this kind of thing is on the Yankees. Kid was a Top 5-10 talent in this draft and 27 teams passed on him, several taking lesser players in the process. It was no secret the kid was viewed as being immature…and that’s immature for a high school kid.

  79. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

    Fredo Corleone,

It sure is some risk by Cole and his family.

It’s also some incompetence on the part of Cashman and Oppenheimer to waste a #1 draft pick on someone they couldnt sign. Cole’s father was adamant about Gerrit going to college. Mr Cole is apparently a wealthy man and felt his son’s education was more important than becoming a professional ballplayer at age 18. The family didnt come to this decision overnight. The Yankees didnt do their homework.

  80. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

“Fredo that kid is dead to me.”

I hear you Brandon, but I’m thinking Old Man Cole may well have done the organization a favor.

  81. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive. August 18th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Looking at that pitching match-up-Oy to the Vey. :|

Eh who cares, hopefully his arm falls off and daddy has to explain to the whole family why they didn’t cash in on the kids arm when they could have.

  83. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

    “26-12 is the goal”

Agreed. Tough hill to climb though. Tough road trip coming up where the Yankees will see Halladay, Burnett and Guthrie (who’s been very, very good for the O’s) plus that nasty road trip thru Tampa, Seattle then Disneyland??? Very tough sledding.

  84. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

guys, get over the draft thing. this happens to every team from time to time. there is no guarantee the kid would ever make it to the majors. we seem to have survived without any contribution from eric duncan. the draft is a crapshoot, some guy we picked in the 8th round may well turn out to be the best pick in the draft.

you give it your best shot and you move on.

  85. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

“I would take a team of A-Rods over a team with 18 Brett Gardner’s on the field at the same time, but that’s just my opinion.”

Hmmm tough call. Can i trade 1 of the 18 Arods for a Bubba Crosby? Or 1 of 18 Gardners for a Luis Sojo? Oh and a Nieves for “the good clubhouse guy” role.

  86. JohnC August 18th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

The Yanks did talk to Cole and his family before the draft and they told the Yanks that he would sign if the offer was a good one. He even said that in his post draft interview. Problem was, the Yanks did not start negotiating with him right away. They waited a while, figuring he was gonna take all the time necessary to sign anyway, and when they did go to the Cole family to start negotiating, the family informed the Yanks that Cole had a change of heart and wanted to go to college.

  87. Fran August 18th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Trisha – I agree that you never know what is going to happen with any pitcher – even your ace looses games. I am not sure who I would want to see get the call-up. I can think of pros and cons for both Hughes and Pavano. But I do know that the Yankees will have to give run support to either and that has really been the key this season. I don’t think it’s as much the pitching as it is the lack of hitting.

  88. #9 August 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

“The Yanks would’ve offered $4MM+, but Cole preferred college (at his father’s urging).””

College smollege… take the money and invest it wisely for the kid and he will not have to worry about his future either way…

  89. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

    cole = brien taylor.

we got past that alright, i’d say…

  90. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

“It’s also some incompetence on the part of Cashman and Oppenheimer to waste a #1 draft pick on someone they couldnt sign.”

How much does losing the #1 pick/top tier potential hurt us down the line? Lets hope we landed on a sleeper with one of our later picks.

  91. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I think Pavano needs to come up and earn back some of that stolen 40 million, Hughes is our guy who needs to develop into s good ML starter. The last thing he needs is a rushed rehab and to be tossed onto a team clinging to the hunt for dear life.

On Cole I gotta know why the area scout didn’t have a better handle on this situation and understand that it was a very tough sign regardless of $$$. That’s a guy you grab in the 10-15 round range and then see if you can entice him. It is not a GM’s job to get to know draft prospects. Blaming Cashman is ignorant. Oppenheimer, we he has some ‘splainin to do. Bittle was a terrible choice and Bleich was a reach/risk.

Still I think the Yanks signed a number of guys whose talent merited a much higher draft pick so it could end up being a very solid draft in the long run.

  93. pat August 18th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

    Drive

The Cole’s didn’t get Boras involved to pick out Gerrit’s comforter for his dorm and his wardrobe for UCLA. Something changed along the way and his Dad or him had second thoughts.

    Moving on.

  94. Joe from Long Island August 18th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

    Regards the “Cole incident”….

I thought I read in one of Pete’s posts that the Yankees had talked to Scott Boras, not only the family’s advisor/agent but supposedely also family friend, who indicated that the kid would look to sign a contract.

Obviously, something changed, as they say.

  95. Nick in SF August 18th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

If you had 18 Arods, you would need to expand the clubhouse mirror and hair-tinting facilities.

  96. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I can’t understand why anyone would wish ill will on a family that chose educating their kid over money.

If Gerrit is good enough. he’ll be drafted again as a junior. The worst case scenario for the family is that he gets a terrific education at a great school (UCLA). They chose education over money and should be applauded.

As far as “getting over the draft”… when Cashman says he has a plan to develop from within and then fails to sign his 2 top draft picks, it’s not a trivial matter. Even worse, his 3rd pick may have health problems that the yanks knew about. Dont forget that last year’s top pick, Andrew Brackman was also drafted injured. In other words, the yankees have nothing to date toshow for their last 2 year’s top picks. Cashman cannot get a Kei Igawa bye on this subject.

  97. Joe from Long Island August 18th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

And don’t think this losing out on Cole somehow dooms the Yanks for years to come. As noted a few days ago, this guy Rivera wasn’t thought of as anything special when he signed a Yankee contract in the early 90s – for a whopping $3,0000, I think.

  98. Joe from Long Island August 18th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

    I can’t type, sometimes.

    I meant three thousand dollars.

  99. Nick in SF August 18th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

For all we know, Cole might have met some cute girl who’s going to UCLA.

Or maybe he and his dad sat down and watched a few Yankee games and said “phew, that team stinks!”

Since we don’t know the full story, it only looks like the Yanks screwed this pick up. It may not have been their fault. Sometimes things don’t work out regardless of plans or effort.

Who cares about these punk draft picks anyway? Just extend some of the older players to paper over the gap. Give Giambi 3 more years (his dad really is a real Yankee fan), re-sign Abreu to 3 (4 if he wants more security).

Ok, maybe I’ve gone too far.

  100. S.o.S.27 August 18th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

With all the money the Yankees have. Wouldnt it have been wise to hire a Corleone on the payroll to make an offer to Cole he cant refuse? Im sure he have signed rather than having a horses head waiting for him in his dorm room.

  109. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

26 of the 30 major league teams signed their top picks.

This was certainly an embarrassment for the Yankees. Even Boras said that negotiations never really got started.

Losing Cole isn’t the end of the Yankees. The majority of #1 picks don’t ever pan out. What is troubling is that the Yankees failed to take advantage and restock their farm system with their first 3 picks from the draft. Not too many teams can say that this year. It doesn’t make player development any easier.

or maybe an 18 year old kid was never sure which way he was gonna go in the first place…

there’s no blame here, the guy chose college over minor league baseball. apparently the family isnt hurting for money, so is that so suprising? think about it, a college education could be worth at least as much if not more than $4M over a person’s lifetime. not many jocks who dont hit the big time go back and finish thier degree.

so the kid chose college and we’re outta luck. it happens. it doesnt mean anybody could have known this on draft day. after all, they were consulting with an agent… as someone said, boros wasnt hired to decorate his dorm room.

It’s either 26 – 12 or 25 – 13, and yes, the odds are heavily against it. Someone bemoaned the pitching matchups for the Toronto series. The fact is that most of the upcoming series will look similar. I mean, come on, we have Rasner, Ponson (despite his overachieving), and ???

  125. Gene August 18th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Many fans being how they are and starved for wins would probably accept Carl Pavano if he was brought up and threw quality starts in clutch games and somehow managed to get run support in doing so.

    Y’s Guy,

“it doesnt mean anybody could have known this on draft day.”

Yes, they should have a pretty good idea actually. It’s the responsibility of the person who scouted Cole to research his signability. Scouts talk to players and their families. This isn’t done in a vacuum.

  131. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I’d say 50 bombs would produce the most runs because unless they were all solo shots they would produce well over 50 runs alone. 50 bunts or singles might not always lead to a run.

“His breaking ball was flat,” Franklin said. “That’s a strong indication that your legs aren’t feeling too good and is a bit tired. I remember before when I went to get him (in Tues day’s game), he said he was glass; that was about 50 pitches. Tonight, I didn’t feel like I had to extend him at all, which is not a good thing. Each start he’s gotten worse. At 80 pitches and you’ve still got good stuff vs AA but why call him up ?, he’s coming I guess. “He’s coming whether NY likes it or not.”

the #’s looked better last outing but i dont think pavano is near ready yet. im telling you, 3 starts ago he looked great for 2 innings, but completly ran outta gas in the 3rd, his fb down 6 mph from the first inning. i wasnt there for the other two, but the #’s would indicate he ran out of gas in the 4th in his next outing. franklin says he doesnt have his legs under him yet.

much more likely hughes comes up and pavano takes his place in scranton for at least 2 more starts.

  141. Redding August 18th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

The Yankees took a risk that Cole, being a Boras client and a “die hard Yankee fan”, would sign. They thought that his personality might be conducive to that as well… a kid who is egotistical and immature might be enamored by big money. And his dad was from Syracuse and a die hard Yankee fan as well– enough that they stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Phoenix in 2001 to watch us in the WS.

It really is puzzling how everything changed.

  142. Laura - I still believe! August 18th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I think bringing up Pavano would be a mistake. First of all, he will probably trip getting out of the cab and sprain his buttock again. Secondly, I think his presence would not be good for team morale. I don’t think the players like him (who can blame them) and he might mess up the harmony that is the Yankees clubhouse. Third, he’s a disgrace to the uniform and I don’t really want to see him in one again.

Why didn’t the Yankees put in a claim on Mark Kotsay? The A’s are paying most of his contract, he’s a solid center fielder and just hit for the cycle, plus he’s a FA.

Anyone else feel the same way. Coolstandings.com now has us at 6% chance of making the playoffs. With a sweep of Toronto and Baltimore and some more Boston, Tampa, Chicago, and Minnesota losses, maybe we can move up in the wild card standings.

  173. gayle August 18th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

brandon not quite sure where you got those quotes but they certainly were not from the article you sourced. In fact they were exactly the opposite

He did great,” manager Tony Franklin said. “Six innings, he did a nice job. He changed speeds and hit his spots. He’s done that every time he’s pitched. He commanded his pitches and commanded the strike zone. He’s gotten better each time out. This was the best outing of them all.”
Pavano, the 1996 EL Pitcher of the Year, retired the final eight batters he faced, 11 of the last 12. How strong he would be late in the game was the next hurdle he wanted to climb.

“He was able to keep his breaking ball sharp,” Franklin said. “That’s a strong indication that your legs are feeling good and aren’t tired. I remember before when I went to get him (in Tues day’s game), he said he was gassed; that was about 50 pitches. Tonight, I didn’t have to go get him at all, which is a good thing. Each start he’s gotten better. At 80 pitches and you’ve still got good stuff, he’s coming. He’s coming along really well.”

    Yankee Trader,

There’s no game tonight, but tomorrow’s lineup will include Hiedeki Matsui and won’t include Gardner.

“Off days bring out the worst of this blog. Perhaps tomorrow some sort of sanity will be restored. Or, maybe not. Oh well.”

Off days and the several hours following a loss are probably the worst times to be on here. The latter brings the trolls and they are the absolute worst as we all know.

  176. Masterson August 18th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

The next 6 will pretty much give us what we are in for the rest of this season.

5-1 is needed to get back in this.

Need to get this lead down to 2 games by sep 1

  177. Ox August 18th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

“Off days bring out the worst of this blog. Perhaps tomorrow some sort of sanity will be restored. Or, maybe not. Oh well.”

Why would you come here looking for sanity? That’s insane.

  178. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

I’ve been to Fenway about 20 times, but not since they’ve added the new seats. As a matter of fact, one of the last times I was there was for the night Wade Bogg’s return to Fenway as a Yankee.

Sections you do not want to sit in are the grandstands on either side past first or third base. The seats fce the outfield so you have to strain your neck and there’s a lot of obstruction from the poles.

Fenway is the most over rated park in baseball, and I’m not just saying that because I hate the Sox. There are fabulous seats if your close to the field. Roof seats arent bad if you can get them.

Everything else is obstructed by poles or the roof overhang. The bleachers are like any other field’s bleachers and offer a great view of the outfielders’ backsides and little else.

  179. Brian (Red Sox Fan) August 18th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

    Clare,

Be careful of obstructed view seats. The support poles (for the roof) are about 1/2 way up, so try to sit with the poles behind you.

Also, a lot of people like the Monster Seats on top of the left field wall (very tough ticket). Seats down the left field line are very good (looking right at home plate). Avoid seats near the right field fould pole , which face the left field wall.

    Good luck!

  180. Clare August 18th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

    Thanks for the help guys!

  181. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Clare,

Avoid anything down the right field line. Right Field Grandstand seats are the worst seats anywhere in baseball, especially for the price.

Speaking of the Saux, may we please have a moment of silence? Curt Schilling is contemplating retirement. What SHALL we do without his infinite wisdom???

Barry Zito went 7 innings, no runs, today.

    Maybe Pavano isn’t doomed.

Interesting post about September call-ups by Chad Jennings. It’s definitely worth a read as it talks about some likely 40 man roster moves this winter…

“The Rays will lose to the Angels and Boston will get shellacked in Baltimore.”

Jon Lester is pitching for the Sux I doubt a shellacking is in order however the O’s might be able to get to Bostons middle relief.

  187. ramon August 18th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

zito should be an example of why we shouldn’t be down on sabathia if he has a bad yr for us next year not to give up on him.

  188. tim boat August 18th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

easy 2 out of 3 for toronto, maybe a sweep. this season went into the toilet after that sweep in Anahiem.

  189. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Heaven forbid if Schilling should retire. He’ll end up as a mouthpiece for one of the 3 or 4 letter networks. We’ll still have to listen and he’ll be getting paid!

“Heaven forbid if Schilling should retire. He’ll end up as a mouthpiece for one of the 3 or 4 letter networks. We’ll still have to listen and he’ll be getting paid!”

Oh goodness. I never considered this idea, Schill on NESPN would put me in a deep depression.

  191. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

espn is reviewing the giants march to the super bowl!

damn, that was good! does it ever get any better than beating the cowboys in the playoffs?

  192. Tank August 18th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Oh god, imagine Schilling and Steve Phillips analyzing a Yankees game at the same time?

  193. sunny615 August 18th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

CB/SJ44 – either one of you got the dirt on what happened with Cole?

“Barry Zito went 7 innings, no runs, today.

see that’s how pavano sucks people in, and the WHAM!!!

    he gets them again.

  195. Betsy August 18th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Pavano has to get the call before Phil. I don’t care if Pavano gets shelled, but if Phil does……? Ugh. Of course, Phil will get shelled plenty of times in his major league career, but he’s not ready yet and he’s already been rushed once. For a prized prospect, he’s been treated rather oddly by the Yankees.

It just sounds like Phil is going through a dead arm period; hopefully he will be fine next out. If he’s not, then we have to hope it’s gone by the next start after that…….otherwise, Phil’s in trouble. The reports on Phil were fairly glowing outside of last night, so I’m just anxious to see him get on the mound again and throw a gem (if for no other reason than to hush the naysayers)………in AAA. It would be a HUGE mistake to bring this kid up right now.

  196. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    Al,

That’s a 5 letter network. Too colloquial. Besides, he would refuse to sign the no-bad-mouthing the Red Sox clause. :)

  197. Al from BK August 18th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

    “Al,

That’s a 5 letter network. Too colloquial. Besides, he would refuse to sign the no-bad-mouthing the Red Sox clause.”

Very true. BTW Sux failed to score Ortiz from 2nd in the 1s O’s coming to bat.

  198. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    Well, that didn’t take long.

  199. Nick in SF August 18th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Zito is more of an extreme cautionary tale about giving huge contracts to pitchers with diminishing stuff (or at all?).
One thing about CC, there’s nothing to suggest that his stuff is diminishing. He is also to be a man of enormous appetites, a quality sure to make him a fave on the LoHud blog.

  200. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive. August 18th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Barry Zito went 7 innings, no runs, today

Another sign of the apocalypse?

  201. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

yeah, i didnt get the zito-pavano connection either, zito has been a horse, last year he pitched 194 innings, he went over 200 each of the 7 years before that. you can put zito down for having a bad year, but as far as showing up to pitch, he’s among the strongest in mlb.

  202. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 18th, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Varitek went yard, too. If that’s not a sign that they’re going to win this game then I don’t know what is.

  203. Domingo Jean August 18th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Bad outing for Phlop Hughes. Dang.

  204. pat August 18th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Cashman on Pavano not being accepted in the Yankee clubhouse….

“If people have that type of attitude there, it’s stupid,” Cashman said Monday. “Everybody has issues and makes mistakes or has things to deal with. It’s about turning the page and moving forward and concentrating on what’s in front of you rather than concentrating on what’s behind you.”

5-1 Rays thru 3. Yankees aren’t catching the Rays.

  206. Art Vandelay August 18th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

As much damage that Curt Schilling has done to us since 2001, I would rather have him retire from blogging and voicing his opinion instead of pitching. Curt is an excellent at his pitching craft but he really should just shut his trap.

  207. Nick in SF August 18th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Texiera hasn’t done squat against the Rays so far. Forget about him.

  208. Fredo Corleone August 18th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

2-1 Boston. Huff homered. Nice year for Huff.

  209. ZMAN7777 August 18th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Fredo — you’re absolutely right. The Rays are amazing in the dome. The Yankees have no shot at catching them. Frankly, given the current team, it would be miraculous for the Yankees to simply make the last week meaningful.

  210. pat August 18th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Why do the God fearing people of Maryland dislike the Yankees so much? LOL.

    anyone heard from SJ44, today?

  212. Drive 4-5 August 18th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

    Art,

He hurt us in the postseason for sure, but the Yanks had a lot of regular season success against Schilling. He was 7 -8 with a 4.71 ERA for his career against the Yanks. Schilling was 0 -3 against the Yanks last year and helped us get back in the race.

  213. jennifer August 18th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Ken Davidoff of Newsday was on just on 1050 and basically accused Pavano of not needing Tommy John. Said he shopped himself until he found a doctor who would perform the surgery.

  214. Y's Guy August 18th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

a team that had no problem with sidney ponson should have no problem with carl pavano.

  215. jennifer August 18th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

y’s guy. Sidney would just have to look at Carl and he’d crack.

  216. sabbysab August 18th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

did anyone notice how halladay and burnett ALWAYS pitch against the yankees in every series…i’m down on the yankees this year like every other yankee fan but THATS respect for you..it kills me that the yankees suck this year but it seems the other teams didn’t get the memo…it’ll be nice next year when we get to throw sabathia and hopefully sheets against the crappy canadians in every series as well…

  217. jaysfan August 19th, 2008 at 6:11 am

“did anyone notice how halladay and burnett ALWAYS pitch against the yankees in every series…against the crappy canadians in every series as well…”

are yankee fans that arrogant and self-centered that they think toronto actually changes around their schedule because of the mighty yankees?! halladay marcum and burnett are going to pitch every 5 days for the rest of the year, off days be damned. purcey and litsch are the ones affected by the days off. if the jays were really concerned about lining things up, they’d throw Doc back out against the Sox on friday, the team they are chasing to make the playoffs (not your sad-sack yankees). halladay is pitching on his normal four days rest, so get your head out of your *** sabbysab.
