Damon: “That’s unacceptable”

August
19

There are tough losses, there are bad losses and then there are losses when your center fielder drops a ball with two outs in the eighth inning to cost you the game.

There are Yankees who play just as hard as Johnny Damon but nobody who plays harder. He’s a full-effort guy and has been since the day he arrived.

He just screwed up two plays tonight.

“Plain and simple, I missed two balls and that’s unacceptable,” Damon said. “I know that stuff happens sometimes but catching routine fly balls should be that much of a problem. I’m baffled.”

It wasn’t quite routine. But it’s a play that has to be made.

The Yankees are 6.5 games out of the wild card with 37 games to play. If the Red Sox simply go .500, they’ll win 91 games. The Yankees would have to go 25-12 to match that.

“Yankees would have to go 25-12 to match that.”

Can we stop with this nonsense? Its just rubbing salt in the wound at this point.

Its over, and your own poll says 80% of Yankee fans agree.

  2. CB

Damon was the immediate cause of this loss.

But he wasn’t the reason why they didn’t win.

    He was awful tonight. Inexcusable.

But every mistake this team makes, every bad pitch gets magnified a thousand times because the offense gives them no margin for error.

The team just can’t score consistently. The offense is awful.

    That’s why they didn’t win.

It was just a matter of time before the Jays found some way to squeak through a run.

  3. Betsy

Great, Johnny – no kidding it’s unacceptable. Tell me something I don’t know.

The season’s over and I’m not going to let this team get me upset anymore. Shut Joba down, keep Phil in AAA (all though 2009 as well) and just put this season out of it’s misery, for pete’s sake.

  4. aado

I would sign for 82 wins right now.

  5. no words

damon will always be one of my favorite players on this team
he has more heart and plays harder than most

yes he made mistakes tonite, but he also didnt strike out 3 or 4 times

and thats more i can say for some players….

  6. Steve

HEY JOHNNY, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS UNACCEPTABLE?

THOSE WEAK ATTEMPTS YOU MADE AT BUNTING FRIDAY NIGHT!!

  7. RalphieD

for some crazy out of this world reason i still got faith….

  8. JoeT 28 in 09!! I WILL BE RIGHT ABOUT PAVANO!! 5-0 down the stretch

    AMEN!

It’s not happening this year people. How many more signs do you need to see?

  10. no words

    im with you RalphieD

I’ll still have faith even when they give we every reason not to

a real fans never looses faith, but a real fan also sometimes has to face to facts…

As optinistic i’m trying to stay all season, thats just really frustrating.

on the bright side though i can focus more on my studies now that the season is over.

  12. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Can’t keep the faith when you see the way these guys play. They can’t get anything going, and its a sad way to close out the house that Ruth built.

Damon was at fault this go around, along with A-Rod, Jeter, Matsui, Nady, Abreu, Giambi and so on.

Too bad the Olympics don’t go on longer, at least that is more fun to watch than this team is.

  13. Bob(The Original)

Singling any player out at this point is pointless. The whole team is awful and has contributed to this crappy season with the exception of Moose.

  14. Emma

“It’s not happening this year people. How many more signs do you need to see?”

The signs that say that we are mathematically no longer in it…

  15. j

perhaps they should wavie giaimbi and others, and send them to playoff bound teams in exchange for prosepcts

  16. Hybrid Moments

Abreu hit two doubles and had the only RBI. How are you going to call him out?

  17. ZaWheelZ

    Unreal Loss.

    Just Unreal.

  18. CT

I agree with Steve. I never lost faith in this team in years past but this team isn’t playing with a sense of urgency. We can analyze all day what the reasons may be, but it all comes down to the manager.

  19. justin

Game over, season over, life over!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!ONE!!!!!ELEVEN!!!!!!1111!!!!!

  20. Where is the injury bug hiding? in the meachams pants???

Not that they dont play with passion, they dont play good ball at al.. they dont move runners and they dont hit with risp. its simple!!1

  21. Bad Scooter

More and more ridiculous posts tonight. Arod can do no right in most peoples eyes, unreal. He gets a hit and it’s still his fault. Who here wasn’t thinking double out of the box? Overbay made a great play. Arod didn’t run out of the box because he wasn’t sure where the ball was, it was sort of off the end of the bat. We’ve seen guys do that a million times, but Arod gets bashed for not hustling out of the box. Lame.

Then we have so called fans hoping that Hughes pitches Sturday and gets shelled so that will prove that he really isn’t any good and never will be. First of all, judging a guy on one start is stupid, but that’s par for the course around here and second to hope that a Yankee fails, some Yankee fan. Unreal.

  22. no words

hopefully Moose can get to 20, he definatly deserves it.
where would we be without him?

  23. Dee

I’m terrified, TERRIFIED, that we’ll lose the last game at the Stadium. And please, I don’t want to hear who cares about the Stadium…without great baseball and playoff excitement, tradition is all we’ve got.

I will seriously sob uncontrollably if we lose that last game. :-(

  24. A-Fraud

WE HAVE THE ALEX RODRIGUEZ CURSE..

IT HAS PLAGUED US IN MANY WAYS

CANT HIT IN RISP AND DONT WINT BIG GAME

    I HATE YOU ALEX

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, YOU PRETTY BOY

  25. MattNC

Why worry we’ll lose the last game at the current YS? The Yankees lost the last game at the old Stadium in 1973, and went on to win 6 more titles in the renovated building.

  26. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive.

    :(

  28. Christina

Just got back from the game—Great pitching performance by both guys. Arod cant go if he isnt gonna make it. he didnt hustle right from the box—from what i could see.

They get swept and they are done.

Saw you Pete on the field. Said hey but you didnt give me the time of day!!

  29. Bob(The Original)

I will seriously sob uncontrollably if we lose that last game.

No offense, but you need to get a grip.

  30. yeah

this team would be alot better and more fun watching without idiots like jeter, a-rod, giambi and cano on the team.

none of them look interested in playing

30 mil a year and you go up to bat watching pitches go by like its the right thing to do…

  31. Nud

It can and will be done…...just when you want to write a team off or not believe think of the NY FOOTBALL GIANTS-nobody gave them a chance last year after they played so poorly down the stretch…..a win in Buffalo and playing so well against the Pats in the finale and they were still written off for dead for the playoffs….then they got hot….it can happen….if the Yanks take 5 of 6 from Boston they will make the playoffs…..in the short term win tomorrow with Andy and then hope they finally put it together against Halladay

-On to Balt as the win 2 of 3 and then the Sox at home while they are within striking distance

Everything this team does from now on will be as an underdog and IT CAN BE DONE

  32. no words

    Bad Scooter,
even when ARod had the leading batting average he got carp for everything slightly wrong he did

but what everyone feels is that he gets paid big bucks to be perfect, but what everyone forgets, including myself, is that even the greatest players have flaws and bad nights, or bad years

    “thats just baseball”
    -the yankees manager

  33. george

    >>He just screwed up two plays tonight.

  34. Vader

A-Fraud, tell us how you really feel.

  35. george

“He just screwed up two plays tonight.”

“Just” screwed up – Pete, you have to be kidding me. gee great, i’m glad you feel it’s so unimportant. enjoy your evening.

Damon’s an excellent player, etc., no doubt. i’ve seen him signing autographs after games, which is very rare. i like Johnny Damon.

but that was such a pathetic perfomance that you cannot play him in CF. Ever. that 2nd play – he was moving at such a leaden pace, it looked like Jose Molina was the CF.

  36. Tank

Look on the bright side… we can play spoiler.

Still have 6 games a piece with BOS and TB
    3 games vs. LAA
    and 4 vs. CWS

Let’s set out goals to ruining the White Sox’ postseason chances when they come to the Bronx next month!

  37. Nick in SF

Why are people upset about the results of one game? We took two in a row from the Royals!

  38. Getting Late

    no words,

Do you still want Brett Gardner to fail (in your heart)?

  39. jk

Send Matsui to the DL and Damon to the DH.

  40. Vader

Is that what the Yankees have become….Spoilers???

  41. lil' m

CB: Right on, right on, right on. I feel bad for Johnny (and yes he definitely should have caught those balls) and Ras – only saw the game from the 7th onward. But the losses to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Texas, etc. are why they’re where they are now, and that’s all on the offense. The entire season is on the offense. The pitching, considering the loss of Wang and the lack of wins from Hughes and Kennedy, has been there. The kind of run that would give them any chance of getting back in even the wildcard race would require them to hit and score consistently. It’s hard to see that happening when it hasn’t happened all year. And other teams are not about to help them.

  42. Bob(The Original)

Look, Damon screwed up tonight, but get off his case.

The guy has done more to try and get this team winning than any of these other clowns this season.

You want Melky back in the lineup? Well than we would have been shutout tonight. No way he would have gotten on base to get the 1 run they did get.

We’re all sick to death of hearing it, but this really was one of those nights where you just have to tip your cap to the other pitcher. He was awesome tonight. They were lucky Rasner even kept them in it.

  43. Showalter '09

Don’t shut Joba down… let him get his innings for next year unless his injury really is bad.

We gain nothing from shutting him down if hes ok.

He is the only young stud we have unfortunately.

  44. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Jerome from Manhattan sounds like the stupidest human baboon in NY on WFAN.

  45. Nick in SF

Ooooh, the Tip Your Cap monster has defeated Godzilla and the X-Man. Revenge will be ours.

  46. steve

all johnny did was end the game right there, instead of losing it in the 12th inning off robertson.

  47. daver

    And Giambi said this:

“Plain and simple, I struck out four times and that’s unacceptable,” Giambi said. “I know that stuff happens sometimes but hitting balls shouldn’t be that much of a problem. I’m baffled.”

    No? Shocking.

  48. steve

BTW steve sommers is insufferable after yankee losses/mets wins

  49. BAT JETER 8

Never has a player come back from a injury and blended into the team like Matzui tonight… going 0-4 like all his team mates…..

    Bradon

Dont be ashamed with me.. How can you watch a player to that caliber, (probably the best player in the game) look soo bad in big spots. He almost gets embarrased.

He is something that i like to call, a pretty boy. He does not now how to dig deep and get the best out of his potential when a pitcher is dealing.. He has a hard time shortening his swing, and lets one a bat get to his next a bat. I have been saying for day one he has a curse and is not a good fit and should not have been resigned.. I believe if went on the red sox 4 years ago they would not have won any championships and just like the curse of the bambino we the yankees are cursed for multiple years.

Finally why are you ashamed of me. I cant shout my anger. He deserves most of it. In a big a bat to put the game away today with bobby on second he strikes out of 4 pitches. Does not even do the smart thing and move the runner over. He thinks for himself and he chokes multiple times.. I wish he was never a yankee

  52. DVAB

Pavano listed on ESPN.COM as starting Saturday at Baltimore. We need to win 5 straight RIGHT NOW to head home against the BoSux and Toronto before starting ANOTHER BRUTAL 10 game road trip….Backs are against the wall and we need FIVE IN A ROW….( my money is on us winning maybe 2 of the next 5 games with this HEARTLESS group of LOSERS )

  53. NYYanksFan

    A-Fraud

What did the Yanks win the 4 years before A-Rod arrived in NY?

Maybe it’s the curse of Moose or Giambi!!

  54. wolf man (2008 is over)

    and you know what sad?

it wouldn’t shock me one bit if we lost out on CC, TEX, sheets, manny etc.

with the luck this franchise has had in recent years, it would be reasonable to expect CC to go to the dodgers for a discount, TEX to stay with the angels, manny go to to philly, sheets to go to the braves or astros, and the mets re-signing perez.

  55. JB

Jerome from Manhattan sounds like the stupidest human baboon in NY on WFAN.

    And that’s a surprise?

  56. mel-go, go, Waipio!

Was Giambi sporting the Golden Thong along with his Golden Sombrero?

  57. Dee

I’m not a huge fan of Alex, I think he’s a phony and doesn’t have enough heart to win when it counts. BUT…

He’s the most talented player alive. He plays and trains harder than anyone. What else is he supposed to do?? Sure he’s a headcase and can’t hit clutch, but if he could take a pill and take care of that, trust me he would. He doesn’t have the intangibles, that’s a fact. But calling him a loser or a bad player is just nonsensical. It’s not his fault that he got paid so much. If you want to be mad at someone, take it out on Hank, he’s the one who signed him up for 10 years.

  58. Nate

    This isn’t a playoff team.

I think we can all realize that now and move on and stop worrying about it.

I can’t think of a worse year for this club.

Hughes and Kennedy winning ZERO games and Kennedy especially looking like he cannot handle NY.

    Joba and Wang getting hurt.

Not signing Gerrit Cole and not drafting any top 80 prospect.

Not signing Michael Inoa or any top Latin FA.

The regression of Cano and Cabrera.

Horrible season all the way around.

  59. A-Rod sucks.

    A-Rod should quit life.

  60. j

well atleast now we can hear our ” we will get them in 09” chants. heres the thing. look at the braves, they has 15 years of playoffs and then when they didnt make it they completely fell out of it.

  61. Tank

Speaking of Sommers… it is amazing how much the quality of WFAN has deteriorated.

Malusis? Adam the Bull? Lori Rubinson?

Boomer and Carton who might be the worst sports programming show ever created?

Mike Francessa solo is marginally above Neer/Ed Randle/Tony Paige. Russo made that show exciting.

Carlin/Kim and Beningo are what make that station. And Carlin/Kim is only on sparingly.

  62. Fredo Corleone

“He plays and trains harder than anyone.”

No he doesn’t. At most, he plays and trains AS HARD as anyone. Not harder.

  63. Kell

Get used to to A-Rod cos he’s here for another decade.

Get him some help. Maybe a 1b who does more than walk or homer and nothing else. Maybe a 2b who gets on base more than 30% of the time. Get a CF who doens’t have 3 extra base hits since June and finally gets benched in mid Aug.

  64. Dee

“I will seriously sob uncontrollably if we lose that last game.

No offense, but you need to get a grip.”

Well you and I are different. I’m passionate!

  65. A-Fraud

Noo its the curse of the A-rod.. Hands down.. hes a punk!!!

Hes like barry bonds but just nice to the media.. so the media helps him out a lil

Is a-rod the next dan marino???

  66. bphill

I am still saddened by John challis. I wish A-Rod didn’t stink so much today, I think A Rod will get a hit for John tomorrow.

  67. Nate

    Dice K is now 15-2.

At least Igawa is 15-2 in Scranton!

Another great pull there Cashman. A 26 yr old ace on the open market and you don’t get the high bid.

Then he compounds the mistake by getting Sunglasses Igawa and passing on Ted Lilly. A proven AL East lefty.

  68. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive.

    A-Rod sucks. August 19th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

    A-Rod should quit life.

    WTF?
You need to quit this blog. No need for this crap.

  69. Dee

“No he doesn’t. At most, he plays and trains AS HARD as anyone. Not harder.”

I’m not out there with him so I will just go by what I’ve heard a hundred times from everyone who is supposed to know, that he trains harder and has the best work ethics around.

  70. wolf man (2008 is over)

do you eventually see this charleston team (assuming they progress and stay at the same levels together) become an elite, renowned team like the current AA Huntsville or that Jacksonville (Dodgers) team a couple years ago?

  71. Halton

“Carlin/Kim and Beningo are what make that station. And Carlin/Kim is only on sparingly.”

Thank God you don’t program the station.

Beningo is unlistenable. Carlin a close second and who wants to listen to a woman talk sports for 4 hours?

  72. Bob(The Original)

“I will seriously sob uncontrollably if we lose that last game.

No offense, but you need to get a grip.”

Well you and I are different. I’m passionate!

OK sure. Because no one posting on a Yankee blog at 11 o’clock in a season that’s going down the toilet is a passionate fan.

More like you’re just a little looney if you are gonna sob uncontollably if the Yanks lose the last game that won’t even matter.

  73. Seer

    Brandon

do you eventually see this charleston team (assuming they progress and stay at the same levels together) become an elite, renowned team like the current AA Huntsville or that Jacksonville (Dodgers) team a couple years ago?

You’re asking the guy who wanted Eric Threets as the lefty in the bullpen, Jeff Keppinger at SS and as a righty bat, Bill Hall at 3b and didn’t want Nady. You serious?

  74. hank hal

Nate—- It’s ok, who needs Dice-K or Santana when you can have Igawa, Phil Hughes, and Ian Kennedy!!! Take our Joba that that trio will even make the members of Generation K embarrassed.

    I don’t know.

I know what posting that says about you though.

  80. Frank LI

They cannot let Cashman be the one making the decisions this off season.

He has proven he cannot pick pitchers and evaluate them properly. Especially FA pitchers.

He’s the same guy who saw Kennedy and Hughes and said they were better than Santana.

  81. ray (sox fan)

    Nate,
Are you really going to fault Cashman for not bidding the highest for Dice-K?

I don’t think there was a single person that predicted that the Sox would bid 50 million just for the right to negotiate with Dice-K.

Yes, Dice-K is 15-2, but even the Sox announcers are baffled by his performance. Tonight was the fifth victory he had that he only pitched 5 innings this season.

He is among the major league leaders in issuing walks. I’m not sure Dice-K would have been the answer to the Yankee problems.

It has already been noted on here that no matter how good your pitching is, if the offense can score no more than one run you will not win many games that way.

  82. Dee

    Hey Bob (the original!)

People can be different you know, why go out of your way to tell them to get a grip and call them a looney just b/c they show some emotions. Let me guess you don’t live in NY?

  83. DVAB

    26-11….we can do it ! ( no frickin’ way ! )

  84. Bob(The Original)

    That’s what he said? Really?

    Get a clue.

  85. NYYanksFan

“This team just doesn’t have the heart.”

Based on this blog, neither do many of their fans.

  86. Halton

Come on. There is a reason that there are no women who host sport talk shows. Because men don’t want to listen to women talk sports.

It’s all cute when they call in but who wants to listen to one for 4 hours?

I’m not sexist. Just a realist. So be PC all you want. Them the facts.

  91. Fredo Corleone

  92. no words

how in the living hell does dice k get all these wins when he walks people every second

but yet it seems everytime we walk a person it comes back to bite us in the butt?

  93. BrooklynYankees

Anyone else get the sense Damon doesn’t like playing for Girardi? Not that he’s called it in this season, but being benched the other game for no reason while leading the AL in hitting? The lackluster bunt attempts? The dropped balls tonight? And he hasn’t been hitting the ball well since.

  94. Nate

Dice K was a 26 yr old in his prime. He was a free agent in an age when ace pitchers don’t hit the market under 30.

The Yankees had/have a desperate need for starting pitching.

You make sure you get the high bid.

Who cares about walks if those guys never score??? Effectively wild is a pretty good thing with some pitchers.

The guy has 15 wins and missed a huge chunk of the year with tendinitis.

You get that high bid knowing that you are going to sign him to a cost effective contract anyway. Plus that money isn’t in the lux tax.

So what do they do? They put in an average bid and then make sure they get their own Japanese pitcher just so he can pitch for their AAA team. And they pass on Lilly who was dying to play here.

So, yeah, that’s on the GM.

Just like you can throw Inoa, Cole, Pavano, Wright, etc on him too.

  95. wolf man (2008 is over)

  98. Showalter '09

I don’t think Damon likes being a Yankee.

He is a Red Sock at heart just like Kevin Millar.

  99. Bob(The Original)

I actually feel a little better just thinking about that day. lol

    Ever heard of Dana Jacobson?

  101. Laura - That's all she wrote, folks!

“He is among the major league leaders in issuing walks. I’m not sure Dice-K would have been the answer to the Yankee problems.”

You are right, Ray. Dice K would not have been the answer. Neither would Santana. Our problems are offense related. It’s funny – when the season started, everyone said that our pitching would do us in. Here we are, in August with 30+ games to go and our pitching has actually been a strength.

Think back to how many games Moose, Petitte and even Ponson pitched that we would have won if we had just scored 3 or 4 runs. It is mind boggling that a lineup with such talented guys can’t muster up 4 runs. Now, in all fairness, there are nights like tonight where the guy is simply unhittable. However, we all know that there have been many more nights where we were playing some scrub and couldn’t do Jack Squat against him.

I’m at a loss to explain the run drought. The Yankees are as well. At this point, it’s much ado about nothing as I am on the brink of giving up. I won’t stop watching. I won’t stop cheering. But deep down, I know it’s over. I can live with that. It’s not the end of the world, just the end of a season.

  102. Nate

Boston has beat us out for every pitcher the past 5 years and that is why they have 2 titles and we have None.

    Schilling. Beckett. Dice-K.

We try to counter with Kevin Brown,Randy Johnson, Vazquez, and Igawa.

    Great.

Not to mention there pursuit of A-Rod got Cashman jealous and lead him to trade for him. Why couldn’t they have just let him go to Boston?

You know they don’t win anything without Manny.

  103. j

we need a new 1b dh. who should they get? swisher dunn

  104. Halton

    “Ever heard of Dana Jacobson?”

The one ESPN suspended for off color jokes and being a lush?

    Her?? Yeah, she’s great.

SInce when does she do talk radio? Face it. There are no women doing sports talk for a reason.

  105. Dee

“”Let me guess you don’t live in NY?”

If he did, would he be required to sob uncontrolably upon the Yankees losing a meaningless game within the confines of an inanimate object that will be gone soon?”

No, he just needs to appreciate that people express themselves their own way and just march on by when he sees someone acting differently than he would…like everyone does everyday in NY.

  106. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Brandon,

    Sigh. Again with Long.

This is not little league. They do not need to be taught base running, bunting, and situational hitting. If you can not hit a sac fly, you shouldn’t be playing baseball. Get under the damn ball and let it fly.

I liked what I saw today against Burnett. They were patient and worked the counts. What I didn’t like was the fact that there were a lot of bats sitting on the shoulder. There should’ve been a lot more spoiled pitches and less backwards K’s.

  107. K-Lo

The great winter 2008 Spend A thon is a comin’.

    Tex, CC, Burnett,

  108. Donnie

Any fool who blames the hitting coach deserves what he gets.

They lead the league in runs last yr. I guess that isn’t the hitting coach?

    Which one is it?

  109. mel-go, go, Waipio!

This USA/Japan softball game is more exciting than anything we saw today.

Extra innings so the leadoff batter starts at 2nd. How cool is that? If that was the rule in the majors, the Yankees still wouldn’t score.

  110. ramon

I would sign Brunett in a heartbeak

either way, we need TWO free agent pitchers

steve phillips suggested at the end of the 06 season that we sign zito AND jason schmidt to fix the pitching and said we needed 2 reliable starters.

same holds true this year, no more kids, no more washed up veterans. get sabathia along with either sheets, perez, or brunett.

  111. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Donnie,

They believe that last year’s production was a residual effect of Donnie Baseball.

  112. yanksfanmc

I have tickets for Friday night in Baltimore, at this point I could careless about the game.

At least there are all the strip clubs at the block

Anyone know of some good bars in Fells Point?

  113. Bob(The Original)

They should sign Burnett just so we never have to face him again. lol

  114. Bob(The Original)

steve phillips suggested at the end of the 06 season that we sign zito AND jason schmidt to fix the pitching

Thank God Steve Phillips isn’t our GM.

  115. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap)

Explain to me the way this offense is going and how it ranks 11 out of 14 in scoring w/ RISP..HOW DOES HE STAY EMPLOYED !!!

What are they/we paying him for !

  116. Fredo Corleone

“They were patient and worked the counts.”

Um, after Damon walked to lead off the game, only ONE of the next 29 batters Burnett faced got to a 3 ball count.

  117. hank hal

Brandon, he is a sports-psychologist. He is the guy who is friends with Arod and thats why he was brought here in 07 and retained soon after we re-signed Arod. He gets along with the players thats why he is here, not because of his hitting acumen.

He has no credentials on the ML level. Yet he somehow is our hitting coach.

  118. AS

It’s hard to find a team with a group of guys better on paper then what we have even with our injuries. Aj gets credit tonight for sure.(went to the whole series in toronto in july and watched him throw lights out ball then to) but with our lineup we need to score runs plain and simple. letting brett gardner swing the bat with no outs with guys on 1st and second a few games ago? damon not bunting because he’s not a good bunter?...i’m not good at paying 100$ to go to a game but i do it . your a major league leadoff hitter… Come on..Missing fly balls happens thats baseball but I’m one of the biggest Cano fans going but if i have to watch him half ass it down the line one more time i’m burning my tee shirt jersey on the spot…CAN SOMEONE GET CARL PAVANO A MAXI PAD..STIFF NECK NO BULLPEN..PLEASEEEEE..YOU HAVE 40 MILL BUY SOME ADVIL ….

  119. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, botalo a el basura !)

Never have I seen a hitting coach like this go through this type of a season w/o being handled.

  120. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Fredo,

Um. Didn’t realize that, but thanks.

My point is there was less 1, 2 pitch outs (than usual). They made him throw a lot of pitches. Ridiculous that they let someone so fragile go that long, but hey, he’s going to opt out anyway so who cares?

  121. no words

everytime this team got me down I’d say well at least we aren’t as bad as the devil rays

this phrase obviously has not worked out this season, but the rays show that one season shouldnt effect the other, hopefully we can do this

  122. Frank

Johnny plays hard every day, and usually gets the job done at the plate and in the field.

today, we give him a pass, and we realize it was just odd. I don’t think Johnny is a bad fielder, and that shouldn’t happen, but I have to give him a pass.

  123. Repko

    Thank God for the Giants.

  124. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, botalo a el basura !)

He has no credentials on the ML level. Yet he somehow is our hitting coach.

around what 1 – 3 million of “it’s going to be alright” “you’ll hit tomorrow” amazing I guess anyone can be hitting coach.

  125. Mer

Oh Frank—thank you…a nice person. Refreshing. Learn from Frank, people!

  126. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, botalo a el basura !)

    Thank God for the Giants.

    We whooped ass yesterday :D

    All w/o our starters

  127. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Hank Hal,

Who are you talking about here?:

Brandon, he is a sports-psychologist. He is the guy who is friends with Arod and thats why he was brought here in 07 and retained soon after we re-signed Arod. He gets along with the players thats why he is here, not because of his hitting acumen.

You can’t be talking about Long. Long was hired and A-rod sought him out in the winter so they get acquainted before ST.

  128. Fredo Corleone

“My point is there was less 1, 2 pitch outs (than usual). They made him throw a lot of pitches.”

Fair enough. I counted only three 1 or 2 pitch outs on the night. Overall though, they averaged less than 4 pitches seen per batter, slightly more than the ridiculously impatient Jays. Burnett had it going on tonite.

  129. Confucius

“steve phillips suggested at the end of the 06 season that we sign zito AND jason schmidt to fix the pitching and said we needed 2 reliable starters.

same holds true this year, no more kids, no more washed up veterans. get sabathia along with either sheets, perez, or brunett.”

Do you realize that the example you used there really makes your suggestion look bad? That if we’d done what Phillips advised, it would have been one of the worst offseasons in the history of the sport?

History shows that throwing big money at pitchers is seldom the answer to anything. It does help create a team full of washed up veterans, though.

  130. no words

    Frank,
    i agree
but at this point we have absolutely no room for mistakes and at this point no one deserves a free pass
    except maybe johnny damon lol

but right now we need perfection, but like i said before, no ones perfect,so we’re screwed right?

    not if the bats awaken
you gotta have faith fa-faith fa-faith!

  131. Dr. J

Kelvin De Leon – 3-5 with a HR, double, and 3 RBIs as well as a walk.

  132. Fredo Corleone

“History shows that throwing big money at pitchers is seldom the answer to anything. It does help create a team full of washed up veterans, though.”

Apparently, so does throwing big money at everyday players.

  133. mel-go, go, Waipio!

We need to sign Bustos. Just hit a 3 run dinger. In softball. Dude is bigger than Britton.

  134. j

they could let the yankees start each inning with a runner halfway down third, and we would end up with him going backwards.

  135. Joey's Poodle

Kevin Long was a career minor leaguer, spent eighteen years playing, coaching and once even managing in various farm clubs. No major league experience until hired as hitting coach by Yankees.

  136. Jefferson

“WE HAVE THE ALEX RODRIGUEZ CURSE..
IT HAS PLAGUED US IN MANY WAYS
CANT HIT IN RISP AND DONT WINT BIG GAME”

So true we’ve regressed every year this frauds been in town. He should be booed mercilessly every time he’s announced at the stadium.

  137. george

Jason Giambi over the last year:

    .233 .376 .471

    over the last 28 days:

    .242 .375 .424

well, now that Matsui’s back, it’s time to put Nady at 1B, Damon in LF, Gardner in CF, Giambi to the bench, and let it rip.

  138. daniel

and if the Redsox are 1 game over .500, or 2 games over, or 3 or …....and if the White Sox/Twins are 2 games over, or 3 , or….

it ain’t gonna happen this year.

  139. no words

im pretty sure nady does not like to play first place
    hence hes an outfielder
all we need right now is a first baseman who is uncomfortable at that position

    how does that make sense?

  140. Tim P

“well, now that Matsui’s back, it’s time to put Nady at 1B, Damon in LF, Gardner in CF, Giambi to the bench, and let it rip.”

For some reason Giradi is in love with Fred Flinstone so I doubt this happens. Now we see what happens when a girl plays center, can’t throw, scared of the ball.

  141. NYY

JUST LOOKED AT THE STANDING WE ARE ACTUALLY ONLY ONE GAME AHEAD OF BLUEJAYS.

  142. steve

if toronto sweeps us, we are in 4th place.

  143. bye bye postseason

Playing instead of saying. As one of yankees fan,I accept the reality yankees has done.see you next year.

  144. Guiseppe Franco

,i>Kevin Long was a career minor leaguer, spent eighteen years playing, coaching and once even managing in various farm clubs. No major league experience until hired as hitting coach by Yankees.

Yet none of that mattered last season when they scored 968 runs – 80 more than anyone else in MLB.

His bio only matters now because the same players have greatly underachieved or have spent a lot of time on the DL.

Kevin Long isn’t getting fired. Cashman was worried about the offense back in April, so it’s hard to blame the hitting instructor for something the GM anticipated so early in the season.

What they need is more focused, younger, and more energetic personnel on the field – not changing the hitting instructor.

  145. no words

wow 4th place in our division

well lets say if it does happen
it’ll make a better come back story, right? :/

  146. Joey's Poodle

I didn’t give Long’s bio to suggest he should be fired, but because inaccurate information about him was being posted.

I do think his major league credentials were less important at the time he was hired because Torre and Mattingly had all the hitting credentials anybody needed, were agreed on a shared philosophy, and had Long there to implement it once Mattingly was bumped up from hitting coach to bench coach.

Once they left and there was no one left with the same weight in the hitting arena, it’s possible that Long’s credibility on its own suffered, or that he no longer got the same support once the people who put the program in place were gone.

We can’t really know, but it’s perfectly reasonable for people to speculate about such factors in the presence of such a monumental collapse in the team’s hitting.

  147. Mark McCray

    you called for it, pete.

  148. Nick in SF

Pettitte start in Toronto = must win.

  149. steve

what about kevin millar for 1B next yr?

  150. Kill-Schill(ing)

Every week this team finds a new way to lose: Cano/Betemit misplay a routine grounder; Veras and Marte implode; MO, of all people, throws a wild pitch; Damon, one of the team’s best big-game players, muffs a catchable fly ball.

I’ve never seen anything like it before. Each week the Yankees sink to new lows.

Is this what it’s like to watch a loved one die a slow, excruciating death?

The consolation of losing in the ALDS the last three years is that it occurs so quickly. Four and five days and the season’s over. You can bury them and begin to mourn.

This is far more painful. I feel as though watching an attempted suicide in slow motion: the outcome of which I know; I’m just powerless to stop it.

But Mattingly himself has said in the past that several veterans didn’t listen to him or his advice.

This is Don Mattingly we’re talking about. A borderline Hall of Famer – not some career minor leaguer.

He said the younger players were much more open to listening to him than some of the veterans who have been around the game for a long time.

If they won’t listen to Mattingly, they certainly won’t listen to Long or anyone else for that matter.

  153. Nick in SF

How about Robbie Cano’s dad and Minka Kelly as batting co-coaches?

  154. Donnie

“History shows that throwing big money at pitchers is seldom the answer to anything. It does help create a team full of washed up veterans, though.”

And who had the last homegrown pitching staff that won a title? The Marlins?

When we won titles in the 90’s how did we get our pitchers? Thru trades and free agency. A novel concept. You decide what minor league prospects will be in your rotation (Joba) and you trade the others for established players.

You don’t win titles with 3 rookies in a rotation.

  155. CaptainsCorner

Damon play in CF was an absolute joke. That was at least the 4th time in the last month that he didn’t catch the ball when playing CF and the outfield. Against Boston when he hurt his shoulder, against the Angels when Kennedy was pitching and he banged intot he wall and these 2 times. I am sure there have been more. The Yanks best team is, Damon LF, Gardner CF, Matsui DH and Nady 1st base. A couple of times a week Damon can play CF in a smaller park and slide Giambi into 1st. I don’t understand what Damon’s problem is because he has lost a step or 2 everyone knows that but that was not the 1st time this has happened with him and the ball dropped right next to him!! It is not like he missed it by 20 feet.

  156. Donnie

Now we can blame Kevin Long because a team of all stars who lead the league in runs last year can’t hit with runners on base.

    Sounds reasonable.

  157. Josh

Dice-K is 15-2 with an ERA of 2.77. Who wouldn’t like to see this guy on our team? I could not care less that he walks every other guy he faces if they never score. Btw, I believe he is something like 0-16 with bases loaded.

At least Beckett has a numb hand. That probably explains his awful start Sunday. It was pretty entertaining to watch.

As for this team, this season has just gone wrong. We are ONE GAME in front of fourth-place Jays. Hank being a baby and blaming everything on injuries. How about just blaming the offense? You know, the offense that can’t score more than two/three runs a game? And our $300 million A-Fraud. Then there was the All-Star Game: it went on forever so there were no fans left, only three Yanks in the game (and half the Sux team), and a Sux ended up being an MVP.

I’m just praying we win the last game in the Stadium with Mo closing it out. I would settle for that in our “Final Season.”

  158. Joe Schmoe 2

Damn right its unacceptable. Who knew?

They’re going to go 84-78, if they’re lucky. Now that’s unacceptable and inexcusable.

  159. Been There - Twice

No, this is nothing at all like watching a loved one die a slow, excruciating death.

If you really don’t know that, bless your heart, and I sincerely hope you never need to learn better.

  160. PUDGE, THE 08 CURSE

hes near the top of the list of signings cashman has made that were absolutely mind blowing

he defines the type of signings that this team has made since the end of 01 and need to avoid going forward

  161. Phil

To the bridge jumpers and the A-Rod haters, can you just call it a season and stop watching and posting? At least we won’t have to read your garbage after that.

They lost. It sucks. Hopefully they win tomorrow. But get over yourselves and calm down.

And A-Fraud, you’ve pretty much proved you’re a quantifiable jackass.

  162. Wangawa

I don’t really care that the yankees got shut down by Burnett. Anyone watching the game could see that his stuff tonight was ridiculous. It’s the days they get shut down by the Scott Feldmans of the world that piss me off. If this year’s offense was anything like it was last year, we’d be leading the wild card hunt right now.

  163. Mark McCray

    eww…makes me want to puke

  164. Ghost of Scooter

The answer is simple … Johnny, I’m sorry buddy, but YOU CAN’T PLAY CENTER ANYMORE! I like that you admitted that you screwed up in dropping not one, but TWO fly balls, one that ultimately cost us the game, but please go back to LF and let Nady play CF. He can do it.

  165. stu

“The answer is simple … Johnny, I’m sorry buddy, but YOU CAN’T PLAY CENTER ANYMORE!” ...

Damon’s response …. “I’m not your buddy, guy!!!!”

  166. JobaRules...

Forget A-Rod people. At least he hits for power and average. Giambi is an atrocity and should be benched the rest of the year to bring up Miranda (lets see what he’s got). Giambi is a failure. If you cant hit a 93 mph high fastball, go home. 4 Ks? Really? Anyway, Damon had a day day no doubt, however i will take him 95 % of the time over the rest of these guys.

  167. JobaRules...

How bout A-Rod calls on A-Rod to STOP Pressing and get a single or two. But dont criticize getting throw out at second. He was trying to push it, HOWEVER. Run out of the box and you have the double easily.

  168. JobaRules...

How can we expect hustle from Cano, when his mentor a-rod doesnt hustle?

  169. JobaRules...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3543435

Maybe if the umpires were so inept, we wouldnt need IR.

  170. skeptic

again arod dogging it out of the box…

i’v complained about it all year and everybody has some excuse why he’s allowed to dog it every time.

also whiffing with abreu on 2nd and no outs really hurt.

big game time and alex gets smaller, as usual.
