Greetings from Gate A-12

August
19

Good morning from the David Tyree Great Catch International Airport in New Jersey. I’m in Terminal A having just dropped $4 for two newspapers and an orange juice.

The Dodgers are close to a waivers deal with Greg Maddux. Two semi-irate Yankees fans e-mailed last night wondering why the Yankees didn’t get him.

Two reasons: The Dodgers could claim him first because the Yankees have a better record. Plus Maddux would not approve a trade to New York, even for a few weeks.

I am a little surprised that Brian Cashman hasn’t made a move for some manner of starter. But there’s probably a lot of blocking going on and those teams that do have starters to trade (like Seattle) are unreasonable.

It’s going to be very interesting to see who starts on Saturday in Baltimore. Can you actually run Carl Pavano out there after a few AA starts? Desperate times …

They’re calling the flight. Check back later for the lineup and other updates from the Rogers Centre.

Of course you can run Carl Pavano out there. This team has come close to hitting rock bottom, there is literally nothing left to lose. Phil Hughes is looking pretty bad down in the minors, if he comes back and does poorly, that could hinder his future development a bit and sour the fans to him. If Pavano pitches well, we’ll all get a good chuckle and have something to blog about. If he bombs, no one will really care.

  2. jimmy1138

Maddux would get destroyed in the AL East.
I looked up The Sports page of Yahoo! Taiwan http://tw.sports.yahoo.com/ (wanted to get a live ticker of the US Taiwan game) and guess who’s on their frontpage…

  3. mazurek119

Send in Pavano. At least try to get something from the money that he got. If he gets shelled/hurt/laughed at no one will care. Hughes is the future. Don’t run him out there and do long term damage to his psyche.

  4. patrick

just a small note – maddux actually cleared waivers, so he was free to go to any team.

also – the dodgers would have first shot at him no matter what as a national league team. the waiver order is actually worst to first place team in same league, then worst to first place team in other league.

the cubs could have claimed maddux before the yankees could have, despite the better record.

  5. ellen

    Have a good trip, Pete.

  6. Betsy

Jeff, Phil had one bad game. Other than that, he has apparently looked great, better than he has in a long time. He needs one more start, I’ll agree, to get through this dead arm period and to hopefully come back to NY on a high note.

    From Nj Star Ledger

As for the pitchers, the Yankees will need someone to step into the rotation Saturday against the Orioles, with Joba Chamberlain and Dan Giese both on the DL. Cashman said he had “a sense” of who would get the nod, but deferred the announcement to Girardi.

Hughes, 22, was 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts before a rib fracture cost him most of this season. He had a rough outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Sunday night, allowing five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. But it might not have hurt his stock, as Cashman said Hughes had “a bug.”

“He was feeling under the weather,” Cashman said, adding, “it explains a lot of things.”

Sounds like they are leaning towards Phil, since Cash is justifying Phil’s poor outing.

  8. jennifer

You must not count on Pavano.

If you find yourself wavering, use these situations as a reminder.

    July 15, 2005:

Chien-Ming Wang just went down with a torn rotator cuff, leaving the Yankee rotation in shambles after the All-Star break—they had only two healthy starters: Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina.

The Yankees needed someone, anyone to step in.

Pavano was a logical candidate. He had been sitting out for two weeks complaining of shoulder pain, although doctors didn’t really find much wrong.

Brian Cashman called him up and asked him to pitch one of the starter-less games.

    Pavano said no.

“He vocalized that he felt Sunday was too aggressive,” Cashman said at the time.

Pavano never pitched another game that season. And the pain that he complained about never resulted in surgery. Just extended rest.

Read into that however you want, because his teammates certainly did.

And doctors never really found much more wrong with his shoulder, either.

you have a lot of clueless readers.

anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that Maddux would never, ever come to NY at this point in his career.

  10. jennifer

I ask Mark Mussina on his blog the following, here is his answer.

    Re:
What is Mike’s feeling about coming back for another season? If he personally ends on a high note would he return to open the new Yankee Stadium? (EDIT:MM) I think sometime in November, Mike will decide how his body feels, and if he thinks he can succeed for another season. I’m sure the Yankees will make a nice offer, maybe one year and an option, and I think it will be hard to turn down.

  11. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit.

YAY! to that. I definitely want Moose back and I definitely would love Moose to retire with at least one WS ring!

I can see the rest of the season is going to be a seesaw of emotion. I see it in myself already. Great feeling – Yanks take two in a row; not-so-great feeling – Sux and Rays win and gain 1/2 back.

We all know that the Yanks are not going to win every single game but when you are not in the driver’s seat and you don’t have so many games left, losses feeling as deflating as wins feel exhilirating.

Oh well, time to buckle up and prepare for the bumps.

    GO YANKEES!

  12. big apple

They need to start Pavano the rest of the year and see whats hes got

  13. jennifer

Why do ‘we’ need to see what Pavano’s got. The article that I posted earlier says it all. The man’s got no heart. Really I was leaning towards giving him the start, but my mind was refreshed reading the above article. Why let him showcase himself for another team to sign him. If Phil was indeed sick, he’ll be fine by Saturday. Give him the start.

  14. Brent (Here We Come!)

Phil Hughes is looking pretty bad down in the minors, if he comes back and does poorly, that could hinder his future development a bit and sour the fans to him.

Have you been paying attention? Hughes has pitched great during his rehab stint. People are amazed at the life he has on his fastball, he’s gone deep into games, and his last outing was the only bad one, when he was battling a cold.

I say bring him up instead of Pavano. Give him some extra time facing major league hitters so he can get a heads-up for next year. No use putting Pavano in that position: He won’t be a Yankee next year.

  15. TurnTwo

“They need to start Pavano the rest of the year and see whats hes got”

why do they need to see what he’s got? he’s gone come November anyway.

if anything, out of spite, if they didnt need him so much right now, they shouldnt allow him to pitch in the major leagues and audition for another team for a new contract this offseason.

  16. JohnC

I agree big apple. At this point, what do they gave to lose? I’m sure he is motivated at this point to show something in order to get a contract offer from someone next year. I’d still rather see him out there than Rasner.

  17. big apple

He needs to pitch good in order to be considered a decent pick-up in the ofseason.

In the back of every yankees fans head has to be this guy (pavano) may have had the worst luck in the history of sports.

We need to see him pitch one more time to bury him forever or see something happen

  18. VOIII

Pavano will be pitching for his next paycheck…He will have motivation. If he has any success, he can go rip-off some other foolish GM.

  19. YANKSFANMC

Jennifer, I mentioned the other day to let Pavano make the start on Saturday..

Thanks for setting me back into reality. I have no idea what on earth I was thinking. That Newsday article really hit the spot and reminded me of how much of a jerk this guy is and he really has no business wearing the pinstripes.

Give the ball to Hughes. He was solid for us last September..Didn’t he win like 5 games?

  20. TurnTwo

“He needs to pitch good in order to be considered a decent pick-up in the ofseason.”

so you want him to pitch in September so he can justify the Yankees’ FA signing from 4 years ago?

or you think he should pitch now so the Yankees can decide whether or not to resign him this upcoming offseason?

  21. Jonathon

Pavano owes the Yankees innings. IMHO he should start on Saturday and then again every 3 days. When he’s not starting he should come out of the bullpen.

I want 100 innings out of him before the end of the season!

  22. big apple

I Want him to pitch to justify that he ever was a talent in the big leagues

  23. Don Capone

Like it or not, Pavano will be wearing pinstripes soon. Hey, don’t forget, he was the opening day starter last year.

  24. TurnTwo

“I Want him to pitch to justify that he ever was a talent in the big leagues”

why does he have to prove this to you? thats silly.

i really wish the Yankees didnt need him, but right now they are short on arms and almost have to call him up at some point.

otherwise, keep him buried in Trenton, and buy him out and be done with him.

  25. big apple

If he starts Saturday and wins 5 straight for the Yanks, and puts us back in contention for the WC he can atleast his stay with bronx bombers rallyed them at one point in 4 years

  26. big apple

fact remains he has to do something if he is put on the mound for pride/money… or what have you.

    It will be intriguing regardless

  27. Chris in MA

UGH! I am actually making the trip from Boston to Baltimore to see Saturdays game, I do NOT want to see Pavano! I would love to see Hughes but not sure if he is ready.

    ahhhhhh just my luck!

  28. jennifer

I don’t need to see Pavano pitch to know what a jerk he is. If he goes out and pitches well, well it helps the team. But in the back of my mind he is only pitching well for next year, not to actually help the Yankees make the playoffs.

Case in point, he refused to pitch when Cash asked him to try. The Yankees were in a desperate situation, and he didn’t care. If he pitches it will only be about him.

  29. Edward

Mussina said it best in his last contract discussion with Cashman. “You can’t pay me less than Pavano.”

I hope Pavano doesn’t get the ball this weekend, because I’m going to hate rooting for the guy.

  30. chambliss

I see no point in rushing Hughes back against a team that hits well against the Yankees. He needs to build his confidence. Cold or no cold, he got hit hard in his last rehab outing. I want him to dominate a few more games in the minors before bringing him up, and ideally I would like him to come up in September in a low pressure situation (this assumes that the Yankees are out of the race in a few weeks). For Saturday, send Pavano out there and tell him that he is going to pitch 7 innings minimum, even if he gives up 50 runs.

  31. Steamer

Why wouldn’t Maddux want to go to New York? Miss Saigon no longer playing?

  32. Andrew

All the talk of him being gutless and a huge jerk aside, Pavano makes the most sense to get the first crack (hopefully that crack is not one of his bones breaking as soon as he hits the mound) at filling the #5 slot Saturday.

Even though he is coming back from a more serious injury than Hughes, the Yankees have nothing invested in Pavano for beyond the end of September (once they buy out his contract). Meaning, it won’t harm them in the future if they call Pavano up before he may hypothetically be ready to pitch in the majors and he fails. The only thing it harms are their playoff chances, which are already precarious and could be completely wiped out if they stink up the joint in Rogers Center this week.

Also, if Pavano is retched in Baltimore and Hughes throws up the kind of game he’s capable of in Scranton, you give Hughes his shot at the rotation the next time around and send Carl to the bullpen to work as the long man or just be banished. To me, it’s more important to make sure Hughes is 100% ready to compete at the big league level than to feel the same way about Pavano. If he pitches well, great for his future career prospects and great for the Yankees keeping playoff hope alive. If he gets lit up, oh well, his teammates and the team’s fans will hate him even more than they already do.

  33. TKinDC (Robbie Cano - Don't Sell Low!)

This isn’t going to get me nominated to join Mensa – but I would start the guy who has been pitching better.

Notwithstanding this most recent start when he was sick with a bug – Hughes has been better than Pavano.

I don’t think that you are going to do any additional psychological damage to Hughes if he doesn’t pitch well . . . that should already have been done by his performance this year to date.

    I’d start Hughes.

  34. Greg

Greg Maddux has said many times that he prefers to pitch for a west coast team. He’s just one of those west coast guys.

  35. 56Bomber

I’d start Pavano and hope he has a good outing. Then immediately place him on waivers and hope that some team is desperate enough to eat some of his salary or give up some minor league talent.

  36. Phelps Phan

I’d throw in Pavano. no logical reason behind it, i just wanna see what he has left.

  37. miggs

    Jennifer great link on Pavano….

Unfortunately the Yankees may be helping this bum get a job next year. They almost have to start him. It seems logical. But the guy is such a dog. Like someone said before….he would only be pitching for his next contract. He doesn’t care at all about the team.

On another note, I was going through the boxscores from last night. I didn’t get a chance to follow any of the games but I saw CC threw 130 pitches last night. Eeeesh.
The most amazing part was the Brewers were way ahead, up by 7-8 runs. He couldn’t have come out after 7 innings? Even 8? No one in their bullpen could get 3-6 outs?

The Brewers have NO SHOT at signing him this offseason but running him into the ground like that borders on unethical. This guy is about to strike gold with a FA contract and they’re riding him WAY too hard and taking unnecessary risks with his arm.

One thing that tells me though… CC is a gamer. Honestly if I was him I might mention to the Brewetrs coaching staff that 130 pitches JUST MIGHT be a few more than I am comfortable throwing. But CC never refuses to take the ball.

The way the Brewers are using him makes me want to scream “stay away!” to Cashman this offseason. But honestly this guy is just what the team needs. He’s a horse and he competes at the highest level. He never backs down and gives 100% every start.

CC Sabathia is the opposite of Carl Pavano

  38. David

Yeah, I get that the Dodgers could claim Maddux before the Yankees, but how about Boston claiming Byrd? Twins claiming Washburn? CC and Harden going for one legit prospect each? Santana not being signed for reasons of fiscal conservatism, while the Yankees get a new revenue machine stadium?

I am a big Yankees fan, and I can take it if we get beat by better teams. I can’t take watching the whole organization, players and front office, not even try.

Start Pavano and leave him in for 200 pitches.

  39. David

CC already said he wants to stay in the NL, because he loves to hit. Same with Big Zambrano in Chicago. If the Yankees put all of their eggs in CC’s basket, I think they may end up with no omelets.

  40. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

CC already said he wants to stay in the NL, because he loves to hit. Same with Big Zambrano in Chicago. If the Yankees put all of their eggs in CC’s basket, I think they may end up with no omelets.

And he loves NY. Trust me he’ll be here in 09’

  41. stuart

Zambrano has a long term deal.. Athletes say a lot of things I am sure CC will take $25 mill less so he can hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah the Yanks are not smart enough to have a plan B in case CC goes elsewhere, thanks for all the incredible insight…..

  42. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Yeah, I get that the Dodgers could claim Maddux before the Yankees, but how about Boston claiming Byrd

Byrd sucks what is there to not understand about this.

  43. ohgodno

    Prediction:
Pavano stubs his big toe while walking out of the bullpen Sunday, and immediately goes on the DL. Chris Britton gets the start, plunks Millar, Millar charges the mound and Britton eats him.

  44. Andrew

CC went for LaPorta, the type of offensive prospect the Yankees haven’t come up with in years, and the player to be named later is going to be Taylor Green who is another pretty bigtime offensive prospect the likes of which the Yankees don’t have. Also, why trade any “bigtime” prospect for Harden, no matter how well he has pitched in Chicago he is too much of an injury risk to give up any frontline prospects for.

And Santana….how many more times can you beat a long-dead horse? The team’s problems were offense around the trading deadline, and they remain offense now in mid-August. Picking a 5th starter between Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano is not deciding the season.

  45. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Andrew we could have got CC before the deadline we just chose instead of sending prospect renting then buying him that we’d rather buy him in the offseason which is still the right decision.

  46. TKinDC (Robbie Cano - Don't Sell Low!)

    And what did Cashman do?

Traded for a future HOF catcher while getting rid of Farnsy
Traded for a OF for this year and next who BTW has hit .330
Traded for a legit LHP that gives us at the very least a lefty specialist that we’ve lacked for years – (and I think he will settle down and be the 8th inning guy.

But you’re right David – other than that Ca$h isn’t even trying to win.

  47. Trevor

Does CC want to stay in the NL because he loves to hit or is it because most of the NL lineups are pathetic and he could breeze through them? I’d go with the latter.

  48. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Doreen,

You didn’t see my “cutting” comment re: Madonna? http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/08/18/a-few-random-thoughts-before-packing/#comment-503265

Phil will be in Baltimore as the 5th starter.

Phil: “A little bit of dead arm”
Cashman: “A little bit of a bug”
TBA in Scranton? That’ll be Carl’s spot.

But unlike some, I don’t take it personally when they conduct business like this.

I just want whoever shows up to keep us in the game. Preferably with a shutout, but eh, I’m not picky.

  49. Andrew

I’m sure the Yankees could have gotten CC before the deadline (granted, for the farm’s few offensive prospects), but I was just responding to the notion that all it took was “one prospect” to land CC and Harden each, as though their price tags were low and Cashman completely blew it by not acquiring either of them.

  50. randy l

hughes when he’s not ready or pavano when he’s not ready?

and the yankees didn’t grab paul byrd when they had the chance?

let’s hope cashman’s roll of the dice works.

because the yankees need almost all wins from this point on.

  51. al arodien

    pete

I was very offended today about the god bless comment.
Well as a new yorker i was very pleased how the yanks handled

  52. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Does CC want to stay in the NL because he loves to hit or is it because most of the NL lineups are pathetic and he could breeze through them? I’d go with the latter.

It’s all BS he’s not staying in the NL. Come the offseason we’ll woo him to NY, he already shows up to Knicks game (for the life of me IDK why)rockin’ a NY Yankees hat he’ll be here.

  53. Jackie V.

Let’s not forget that C.C. still has an ear for what his pal LeBron James tells him.
That’s the same LeBron that’s a well documented Yankee fan.

  54. PAT M

They need to be very careful with Hughes….All of his starts minus the last outing, he’s been outstanding…That being said, and he’s make up is very different than Ian’s, he needs to be put into a situation that is conducive for success….I say one more start in AAA….I always thought he’d be back right about now, but that last outing makes me think one more tuneup can’t hurt….But I’d rather him than Pavano, who hasn’t looked very impressive ….

  55. al arodien

sorry got cut off in the middle

As a yankee fan i was very pleased how the yankees handled this thing. If a player would say the same thing that you said you and the whole media would rip him as unpatriotic !

about movies ; whats going on with hollywood No good stuff?!!

  56. Chris Russo's Mictophone (BAAAAAAAAGGHHGHGHG!!!!)

Over the past four years, Pavano has been our most consistent starter.

  57. Fran

Randy – Cashman’s explanation on passing on Byrd was that he felt Hughes and/or Pavano would be ready by the week-end and then he would have enough starting pitching and nowhere to pich Byrd. He didn’t feel it necessary to sign Byrd for 1 start.
IMO if Hughes or Pavano does come back and help the team then they really don’t need Byrd.

According to George King in the NYP Matsui will probably be activiated tonight and Christian sent down until September 1st call-ups.

  58. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

He knows it so do we :)

  59. JoeT 28 in 09!! I WILL BE RIGHT ABOUT PAVANO!! 5-0 down the stretch

I’m all for the Pavano start!! I’ll go as far as saying I’m fine with them resigning him at a very cheap rate (though from what I’ve heard on here he would not be interested)

  60. TKinDC (Robbie Cano - Don't Sell Low!)

So if Fran is right and Christian is headed for Scranton – that means that Damon plays CF and Matsui DHes right?

You can bring in Brett after we have a commanding lead to play CF :)

  61. ANSKY

The same readers who complained that a Maddux waiver claim deal wasn’t made …

A – don’t know NY’s not automatically entitled to be first in line to make a waiver claim on player.

B – even if Maddux did get claimed by the Yanks, they would soon be the first to complain that he isn’t as good as he was in the 90’s.

C – are probably among those who conclude the long term value of a prospect based on small sample size of performances (one game or two) which then leads them to believe Maddux (or perhaps once they beleived Washburn) is the only key to making the playoffs.

    D – are usually convinced a player’s 4-game or 2-week slump is a permanent career trend.

E – are usually convinced a player who’s been in a 2-week slump has completely and permanently turned it around with one good game, which is of course a clear indicator of permanent career trends.

F – are usually convinced a veteran pitcher on the decline has permanently regained his former Cy Young skills after posting consecutive low-scoring wins.

G – with hindsight as their aide, 3 months after a deal is made they will always say they knew all along it was a good/bad deal to make and the decision maker on the deal should be fired. Even if they had voiced a different opinion (based on sample sizes described above) before or immediately after the deal was made.

  62. Phelps Phan

Is anyone else worried about our big defesnsive liability if Damon starts in CF ?

  63. JR Yankees

    Off topic but great story.

I am reading a book written by Yogi and Tom Horton. It is an old book (1989 copyright). In the book, there are what is called ‘other voices’ where Horton interviews various players and then Yogi talks about them.

We all know who the obnoxious, almost ‘unlistenable’ Hawk Harrelson is so here is the excerpt from the book where he is talking about his first at bat in Yankee Stadium during an NBC Game of the Week.

”...Whitey Ford pitching and Yogi Berra catching. Strike one. Strike two. Mom is watching and I had better bear down. She doesn’t want to see Kenneth Smith Harrelson look bad. Whitey set up, and just as he did, I felt something warm on the back of my sanitary sock, you know, the whote part of the baseball sock. Strike three! Yogi had spit on my calf just before Whitey delivered. I was dumbfounded. As I turned, my mouth hanging open I am sure, Yogi said ‘Welcome to the big leagues, kid.’”

So, next time you hear Hawk making ridiculous annoying commentary, just remember that one of our beloved legends spit on and embarrassed him during his first AB at The Stadium.

  64. JoeT 28 in 09!! I WILL BE RIGHT ABOUT PAVANO!! 5-0 down the stretch

ahh the CC photo is back lol.

I’ve been thinking that Christian had to be on the team to run for Matsui but I guess Damon is going to be in center and Gardner can run…. not a bad late inning pinch runner lol.

  65. TKinDC (Robbie Cano - Don't Sell Low!)

    Phelps –

No, I’m not too worried about Giambi – he’s been ok this season.

  66. Trevor

Damon in CF every day? Yikes!

  67. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Damon in CF = me :(

  68. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

You can bring in Brett after we have a commanding lead to play CF

    So next year.

  69. ANSKY

    Oh I forgot …

If Pavano manages to make 2 consecutive quality starts down the stretch, the readers I described above will say they knew he was a good signing all along, that they’re gald Torre isn’t around anymore because he overused Pavano, that Cashman should be fired for keeping Torre around to do that to pavano, and if he’s not fired for that Cashman should still be fired for not bringing Pavano back sooner.

  70. Phelps Phan

I hope Giambi isnt batting 5th.

  71. JoeT 28 in 09!! I WILL BE RIGHT ABOUT PAVANO!! 5-0 down the stretch

what is the difference between current moose and current maddux? Even in the state that our rotation is in now, not trading for Maddux isn’t a huge deal

  72. Fran

TK – I would think that is the plan. With Damon in CF the Yanks are weaker defensively but it certainly puts the strongest offensive team out there which is where the Yanks have struggled.

And then they can put Gardner in for defense late in the games like they do at 1st for Giambi.

  73. PAT M

Munson did the same thing to me during a intersquad game back in 72…Only he’d had a wad of chew in his mouth….Turned around and looked at him, and he just sneared at me…...Scared the hell out of me…...Scotty Magregor was on the mound….

  74. RustyJohn

I keep telling folks that Carl Pavano will save the Yankees this year- he will, as Lou Manheim says, look into the abyss and find his character.

The Yankees will be tied at the end of the season resulting in a one-game playoff with the Red Sox. Pavano will get the nod, but before the game, he will shag Alyssa Milano one last time. Then, before going to the stadium, he will get out of bed, look at her, light a cigarette, take a drag and tell her, “Now get the!@#$ out.”

    He’ll then throw a complete game one-hitter.

Impressed by his efforts, the Mariners will sign Pavano to a five-year, $80 million deal, combining the best of the Jeff Weaver and Carlos Silva signings and reminding all that Bill Bavasi lives.

  75. Bad Scooter

Funny stuff on here today. “Phil Hughes is looking pretty bad down in the minors,” for one and another that CC is staying in the NL because he likes to hit. So you’re telling me CC would leave millions of dollars on the table because he likes to hit? Hilarious.

They were dicussing this on the radio this morning. They could careless what happens to CC next year, they know they have no chance to sign him. I agree this throws up a huge red flag. I’d be worried he’d break down next year.

  77. Phelps Phan

“Impressed by his efforts, the Mariners will sign Pavano to a five-year, $80 million deal, combining the best of the Jeff Weaver and Carlos Silva signings and reminding all that Bill Bavasi lives.”

Keep going, i wanna see how it ends.

  78. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

So you’re telling me CC would leave millions of dollars on the table because he likes to hit? Hilarious.

LOL I know. “Hey CC the Yankees are offering you 20 million” “CC and the NL team is offering 16” :) ..”but I like to hit so I’ll take 16..forget my family insurance and future kids scholarships and all that”.

  79. mel-go, go, Waipio!

    Bad Scooter,

Of course money is the great equalizer, but he is a good hitter, he can mow through NL lineups, and he’s said to like the west coast.

The Dodgers fit the bill and aren’t shy about spending money. The wildcard there, though, is Torre. If they acquired CC, Proctor and Sturtze wouldn’t be able to pitch everyday.

  80. westchester dave

I don’t understand why the Yankees don’t try Chase Wright on Saturday. If Phil and Pavano aren’t 100% ready, why not see as to whether there is any upside to keeping Wright on the 40 for next year or whether it is time to cut ties.

  81. Patrick â„¢

Hughes had one poor start in AAA but other than that he’s been good. I think he should stay in AAA for the rest of the year unless the Yankees start to get close to a playoff spot. Whats the point in rushing him to the majors YET AGAIN if the team isn’t going to wake up and make the playoffs?

I’d let Hughes stay in AAA for the rest of the August and for the AAA playoffs. Once they are over he can get a call up and pitch some more innings at the major level. Even if he dominates AAA he needs more time to work on his change-up and cutter.

  82. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

And then they can put Gardner in for defense late in the games like they do at 1st for Giambi.

Yes because our offense has been blazing all these good pitchers. Holliday, Burnett, Beckett, Lester, Kazmir watch us drop 10 runs on each of them , Brett enters in the 8th inning for the PH cherry on top. Johnny’s D is go gundown alot of runners. :?

  83. Rubin

The Yankees wont make an waiver wire deals, unless someone places a great pitcher on trade waivers, then I think Cashman has to put in a claim. Hughes didnt pitch well on Sunday because he was under the weather. I think it would be appropriate to have him pitch another game in Scranton. That leaves Saturday, which will either be Pavano, or Chase Wright. I wouldnt be surprised if Phil Coke is given a look. I think Pavano may be the best option to start on Saturday, given his experience, and he did pitch well when he wasnt injured.

  84. randy l

“MO if Hughes or Pavano does come back and help the team then they really don’t need Byrd.”

    fran-

it’s clearly a major role of the dice with pavano/hughes where byrd is a very predictable 5th starter.

the yankees will lose tens of millions of dollars in not making the playoffs according to vince gennaro who measures such things.

if it was the two million byrd is owed, i think cashman was pennywise and dollar dumb.

    just my opinion though.

i hope pavano and/or hughes wins every game and people think cashman is smart as hell when he’ll really just be lucky as hell.

  87. Brian (Red Sox Fan)

The word in NE is that the Red Sox were the only team willing to pick up all of Byrd’s salary. The other teams that showed interest (including the Yankees) wanted Cleveland to eat most of the rest of his contract.

I’ve heard that a couple of times on TV and talk radio, so I’m not going to vouch for its veracity. Your guess is as good as mine …..

  88. Andrew

Losing tens of millions of dollars is all in a day’s work for the Yankees—I don’t think it will really matter in the long run for their fiscal situation if they make the playoffs this year or not. They make so much off the YES Network and will make even more when the new Stadium opens in April. I don’t think the monetary suffering of not missing the playoffs is going to do much to slow those things down.

The point of this post is not for a Red Sox fan to come on here and trash Phil Hughes.

It is obvious that he is a very talented pitcher and I would love to have him in the Sox system. I know that isn’t happening…just saying.

With that being said, it is just my opinion ( and I could very well be wrong ) that Hughes seems a bit fragile and that there is always a reason why he doesn’t pitch well.

At what point do you start to worry about the tired arm and he had a bug references?

  92. mel-go, go, Waipio!

  95. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

At some point you have to know when to stop whining and being stupid about things. When Melky was sent down the last thing I wanted to see was Damon in CF because I believe we needed the defense out there. They brought Gardner up basically to play in CF and I was greatly relieved that they did. With Matsui coming back and our big issue being offense and not pitching – and the Yankees behind the 8 ball and running out of games – you cannot afford to keep Damon’s bat out of the lineup; and if that means he gets CF in order to keep Nady, Abreu, and Giambi in the lineup then that’s what it means. At this point in the season it is all about winning. Period. I go with my veterans all the time, especially if they are getting the job done. It kills me to see weak offense in CF; but it will kill me more to have Damon’s bat out of the lineup, and you cannot afford to have Matsui out of the DH position. He’s coming back to try to help the Yankees get into the postseason, not because he has nothing better to do. I don’t think we’ll see Damon in CF every day but I would think he’ll be there a good part of the time if things work out with Matsui.

So speaking of the goal being for the Yankees to win, I don’t care who is up on Saturday as long as it’s the pitcher who gives us the best chance of winning. I don’t care where Pavano is next year and I have no axe to grind with him whatsoever in the here and now, and it is the here and now that counts. If he comes up and we win and he showcases himself for another team, so what? The goal is for the Yankees to succeed. Let Pavano’s future take care of itself. Now if Pavano is not the best shot at us winning Saturday (and obviously that will be determined by the people who have really been on top of this 24-7, and that wouldn’t be us) then fine, send up the person who gives us the best chance. Right now it’s about the Yankees winning. Nothing more. Nothing less.

because the Yankees dont need him.

if they want defense in CF, they’ll play Gardner.

if they want offense, they’ll start Damon.

he might be an option to pursue for a short-term deal in the offseason (i think he’s a FA), but they have the pieces they need already in the OF… they just have to play like they are capable of.

There’s a certain element of risk in any pitcher.

The Yankees didn’t put a claim in for him because he can’t stay healthy. He missed 6 weeks this year with a bad back, missed basically all last season with that same bad back. Why would the Yankees put in a waiver claim on a guy who may or may not be able to get out of bed tomorrow?

  118. Yankee Trader

Kotsay hitting .299. Gardner up to .192.

Yankees have toughest remaining schedule and need all the offense they can muster, facing the pitchers they’ll face down the stretch. Matsui will not be able to provide enough offense until he can play every day.

  121. Chris

Kotsay is hitting .299, but he’s missed 40 games this year due to injury. That’s not good enough reason to try and trade for a guy who’s been injured for 2 years with the same problem. At least with Matsui it’s his other knee this year.

Bolt reportedly moonwalked the last 30m but he still finishing his heat in 20.29.

Seriously though … that guy is a phenom. Only one guy has ever been under 19.6 for that race distance (Johnson – 19.32) and the old world record Johnson broke (19.72) which stood for 17 years is still the 7th fastest time ever. Anyone running around a 19.7 is smokin’ and I think Bolt has a 19.2 in him. And he could do better if he ran through the finish line. Maybe if Joe Maddon could bench him we’d see a 19-flat.

I have a feeling Saturday’s starter will depend alot on how the next 4 days go.

This really is the do or die week for this season.

The team is on life support right now. A bad series in Toronto and it will be time to finally pull the plug.

  136. JD(Just in: Yanks will make the playoffs)

Even if CC wants to come to the Yanks he is not going to tip his hand yet. He’s in the middle of a playoff push first off, and secondly he wants multiple teams bidding on him this winter. If CC comes to N.Y. he is going to be overpaid and rightfully so because the fair weather fans and media are going to dog him hard when/if he falters.

  137. Laura - I still believe!

  138. randy l

    hughes isn’t fragile .
he’s simply been rushed before he’s ready.
at every point he’s come up it’s always been a rush job to plug a hole.
now is more of the same rushing.

if he was in the twins organization, he would not have pitched in the majors until he was 22 and then for maybe 8-10 starts.
    at 23, maybe 12-15 starts.
at 24, he would have been given a full shot at pitching a whole year at the mlb level.

the twins generally do it the right way because they have consistently developed pitching over the years.
the yankee are new at it and it shows.

  139. ANSKY

Pedroia isn’t as talented as Cano is. But the thing Pedrioia has on Cano (which makes up for their difference in talent) is hustle.

If Cano hustled that much, we’d have a serious player on our hands.

Unfortunately, that ‘if’ doesn’t count for squat and it doesn’t help the team.

  140. red sox scout

    Only this year???

    Consider last year then.

Cano has .306 BA, .353 OBP, .488 SLG

  141. Laura - I still believe!

You’re being selective in comparing their numbers. Two can play that game:

    2007
    Cano: 19 HRs, 97 RBIs
    Shorty: 8 HRs, 50 RBIs

Now tell me who had the better year?

    What were Pedroia’s numbers vs. Cano’s in 2006? 2005?

why don’t you adjust it for ballpark?

    Cano – OPS+ 120
    Pedroia – OPS+ 112

it’s hard for me to make this argument after the year Cano is having, but if you are going to make an argument including last year, please use the correct numbers.

  150. PAT M

CB….I’m with you …. The Twins have the best runned organization in all of MLB….It goes back to the Tom Kelly days…The entire organization is on the same page…It really is incredible that they just seem to be in the playoff hunt every season regardless of the players they lose to Free Agency…..

  151. Laura - I still believe!

“Don’t you have someone to scout or someone to rip in your column?”

Tell me about it, Mel. I understand why Ray comes here. He’s looking for information, conversation and a good natured debate. Why these trolls come is beyond me. I mean, I would never go to a BOS blog. Why would I want to go to a site that is full of posts about how good a team I despise is or is filled with posts from people who love said team? It just doesn’t make any sense.

  152. red sox scout

    Laura,
I’m not saying Cano is not a good player, and he does hit for more power than Pedroia. But to say that Cano will leave Pedroia in the dust in my opinion is not justified by the facts.

We have not even talked about fielding. Last year “shorty” had 6 errors while “I’m so cool Cano” had 13 errors.

  153. William Buckner

yes he was in the minors, therefore you can say pedroia is having a better season, but it will take another year or two to define who is the better player.

  154. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

red sox scout I understand you want to have discussions but it’s getting sorta annoying now.

    “Laura,
I’m not saying Cano is not a good player, and he does hit for more power than Pedroia. But to say that Cano will leave Pedroia in the dust in my opinion is not justified by the facts.”

We will see, Scout. Unlike a lot of the fans around here, I haven’t given up on Cano. I think that he could end up being one hell of a baseball player.

Pedroia’s a talented guy; a little short, but he can’t help that. He plays hard and keeps his head in the game. I still think that Cano will end up with the more impressive stats, but Pedroia’s won’t be bad either.

  156. NongEyeWayneTolleson

I don’t necessarily see the Twins as the best run organization. Carl Pohlad, the owner, actually has the most money in baseball and consistently fills his team with slight-above average, over-achievers, who will never win the series. They haven’t won enough playoff series to be considered near the top. I understand the statement from the standpoint of hard-nosed players who give you more than you expect, but they could be so much more…but Pohlad is cheap.

  157. NongEyeWayneTolleson

I haven’t given up on Cano, but he’s sure as hell is underachieving and seems lazy out there.

Red Sox Scout, Cano’s potential, and showing what he did last year (with only a great 2nd half) exemplifies he has a higher ceiling than Pedroia. Pedroia is having a good season, and will be consistent, but his numbers will never reach that of Cano’s if Cano actually performed consistently. That’s a big “if” though.

Robbie is a .300 hitter. Maybe not the second coming of Rod Carew, but a solid 2B man who can hit for power and average. He could be as good as Robbie Alomar was in his prime. The trouble is ego. Him and Melky. That’s why it was good that Melky was sent down , and he really has no future with the club. His big claim to fame was that he has a good arm, and isn’t Bubba Crosby. The thing with Cano is that he looks up to Jeter, like I’m sure many of the young players do. But Jeter earned that silly smirk on his face, and has four rings, that say I can walk around with a silly s**t eating grin on my face all day because I’m a champion. Robbie hasn’t done anything of note yet. He has to earn his stripes, and get his own ring, then he can walk around with a smirk. Just not now.

  159. miggs

I hope Girardi bats Matsui 5th… Giambi needs to be moved down.

I think Cash played the trade deadline pretty much mistake free. Getting Nady was obviously huge. Marte had a couple of bad outings, I think he’ll be much better and both will be important in ‘09. Giving up 4 guys in the minors was fine with me, none were high ceiling IMO. Although you hate to see Karstens tearing up the NL. But they needed room on the 40 man roster, especially with the rule 5 draft.

Anyone that is still questioning Pudge for Farnsworth needs to have their head examined. Cashman dealt Farnsy right before he blew up, thank goodness for that.

So Cashman did very good/great things to improve the roster this year and next. He didn’t give up any top prospects. And he didn’t take on any long term bad contracts. Basically even if they miss the postseason this year they are set up well for next year.

Cash balanced those 2 things very well IMO.

  160. hmmm

We have not even talked about fielding. Last year “shorty” had 6 errors while “I’m so cool Cano” had 13 errors.

measuring defensive ability by counting errors is dumb.

welcome to 2001. we’ve come a long ways.

  161. S.o.S.27

    red sox scout,
I have to admit. Some of the scouting report you had is pretty funny. Even if it is my team your talking about. Im going to give you a pass at bashing them. Very well thought out. But i do agree with others that Cano has a much higher upside and he did out perform him in prior years. As far as the error difference. You have to include the difference in range from one player to the next. The balls that Cano gets to Pedroia is playing slip and slide on the infield missing them. Cano has much more range which in tern has more of a chance for errors.

  162. Steve

Speaking as a Yankee fan I’d like to respond to the post about which Red Sox are hated etc.

    1) Manny Ramirez doesn’t play for the Red Sox.
    2) Schilling is like retired or something.
    3) “Nancy Drew” is OPSing like, .930 this year.
    4) You can talk about talent all you like but the fact of the matter is, Pedroia plays better than Cano. Cano’s entire value is based on his BA. He’s going to have some fluky good years and fluky bad years, and you’ll never know what to expect from him, unless he really changes his fundamental approach, and I haven’t seen a shred of evidence that leads me to believe he’s gonna do that. I hope he proves me wrong.

Not sure we’re in any position to be talking a lot of trash this season.

  163. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Cano definitely has more range up the middle and in the hole (if he gave a damn to dive) but he definitely has more range than Pedroia.

  164. Steve

Except when it comes to Moose v. Beckett. ;)

  165. Fredo Corleone

“Cano definitely has more range up the middle and in the hole (if he gave a damn to dive) but he definitely has more range than Pedroia.”

He has more range up the middle than he does to his left.

  166. S.o.S.27

    miggs,
Good point bro. It was only a matter of time when Farns turned into Farns again.

Are you in the east coast yet?

  167. RayBlay

Despite Richond Lockwood Sexson’s time in pinstripes being quite short, I’m sure John Sterling had a wonderful HR call for him. Anyone know what it was?

  168. Doreen

    Mel –
    Re: Madonna –

  169. Aardvark

I think it’s fair to include Manny in the Red Sox hate/like list because I included some Yankees who are no longer Yankees.

Almost put Ponson in the “laugh at” category, but he’s been surprisingly good, except against the Red Sox, who eat his lunch. Oh, and Melky, except you guys are right that Coco Crisp isn’t any better.

There are things to like and dislike about both teams. That said, the Red Sox of late haven’t had any supposed star fail as spectacularly as Kevin Brown, nor any gutless wonder on the level of Pavano.

    A fun little exercise.

  170. S.o.S.27

O.K. i see that it got slow in here. So im going to change the subject for a second. There was an article on fox of who was the better dream team? 08 or 92?

I dont know how thats even a discussion. IMO the original team would roll this years team. Not saying this years is bad. But that was a once in a lifetime lineup. Thoughts?

  171. Celerino Sanchez

Um, to whomever posted the “fine” article on Pavano from Newsday … check that guy’s credentials. He has Wang’s injury completely wrong. How is that clown expected to be taken seriously? How do people like that have jobs at Newsday?

    Yawn.

  172. Fredo Corleone

“Cano has much more range which in tern has more of a chance for errors.”

This theory gets destreoyed when you consider most of the errors Cano makes are on Sunday hops right at him or lazy throws.

Cano has an edge in range factor, but both are above the league average and Pedroia seems to be a little cleaner in making the plays, this year anyway.

  173. Yankee2123

    @Rayblay

Since he only hit one HR, he might not have been given the honor. But if he did it might be “Sexon lays one into the seats!”

  174. Patrick â„¢

The Dream Team would rip 2008’s team, no question.

  175. Dave D

    Francessa-solo is brutal.

  176. S.o.S.27

“Cano has an edge in range factor, but both are above the league average and Pedroia seems to be a little cleaner in making the plays, this year anyway.”

    Fredo,
Thats easily explained. Pedroia is a Hobbitt and therefore his eyes are closer to the ground on grounders. Which makes the routine plays much easier to make. Huuuuge advantage.

  177. Fredo Corleone

“Thats easily explained. Pedroia is a Hobbitt and therefore his eyes are closer to the ground on grounders.”

Yeah, I figured it was something like that. (:

  178. Fredo Corleone

“The Dream Team would rip 2008’s team, no question.”

Disagree. Few of the Dream Teamers were well past their primes (Bird, Magic, etc) and were not as athletic as this current group. Apples and oranges anyway. Athletes today have more available to them than players 16 years ago. Also worth noting the competition in 2008 is more fierce than that of 1992.

  179. needawin

i cant imagine why anybody would have a problem with carl pavano pitching this weekend. as cashman said, we’re paying him alot of money to pitch (they still owe him around $2M.

we’ve picked up the drunken clown twice now and he has helped, we picked up al leiter off the scrap heap and threw him against the sox and he came through brilliantly. sure, pavano is playing for a big contract from another team, great, i hope he pitches well to get another $10M/year! that would mean we got something for the last $2M we paid him and someone else would be paying him to spend the next couple of seasons on thier d.l.

as for the attitude of the yankees about pavano, they can just stick it where the sun dont shine. we need a pitcher and we’re paying this guy, he’s on the 40 man, he’s motivated and we need a pitcher. and it could help in the development of hughes to not be rushed back once again.

i say pitch him every 3rd day if we need him. might as well do like milwaukee and get as much for our money as possible.

  180. S.o.S.27

    Fredo,
The rumors are that he is a Hobbitt or an Umpa Lumpa. Either way you get my drift. Next topic.

    Patrick,
Thank you for agreeing with me. The Original Dream Team is #1. Jordan,Magic,Bird,Barkley,Malone,Leitner. Cant beat that.

  181. S.o.S.27

    Fredo,
Those old washed up guys could hit a 16 foot open jumper and were better passers than this squad. They also had centers.Fierce competition? Maybe thats because we know that international players now and we didnt back then.

  182. Blargh

The Dream Team also has a huge edge with Ewing and Robinson as centers, compared to just Howard for the 2008 team

  183. S.o.S.27

Ewing and Robinson would own Howard. Who would defend Barkley and Malone in the interior? Not to mention MJ. Bird raining 3’s. Magic doing his immitation of Kareems hook shots and penetration. Case Closed. Dream Team wins 104-78

  184. needawin

i think this year’s olympians would beat the dream team handily. (after all, magic is 49, bird is 51)

how well would the ‘27 yankees do in the a.l. east? (assuming they were in their primes) win 120? lose 100? there is no way to tell. each generation stands on the shoulders of the ones who preceded them.

  185. Patrick â„¢

Fredo, If you are talking about competition among the rest of the world then yes it is more fierce today. However if you are talking about the NBA, I think competition was just as good or better back then. The ‘92 team was absurd: Jordan, Magic, Bird, Barkley, Stockton, Malone, Pippen, Robinson, Ewing, Drexler … all are in the top 50 NBA players of all time. Better centers, better point guards and comparable scorers.

  186. Laura - I still believe!

    1) Manny Ramirez doesn’t play for the Red Sox.

Doesn’t matter. I still hate his guts regardless of who he plays for.

    2) Schilling is like retired or something.

He hasn’t retired yet; he’s still a Red Sox and therefore can be hated.

    3) “Nancy Drew” is OPSing like, .930 this year.

This guy doesn’t really bother me although I think what he did to the Dodgers was low. But he’s a Boras client so I’m not surprised.

    4) You can talk about talent all you like but the fact of the matter is, Pedroia plays better than Cano…..

Playing better and being better are two different things. Like I said in my earlier post, I think that Cano is going to eventually get his act together and be a fantastic player. I just hope that happens sooner rather than later.

  187. george

they should name the entire state after Mr. Tyree.

also rename the highway to the Justin Tuck turnpike.

Uhhhh.. You forgot to mention Leitner. Damn he doesnt get any love. Oh and Mullin.

I purposefully left them out. I was just listing the players that are in the top 50 of all time.

  191. Trevor

    Giants will go 11-5

  192. S.o.S.27

    Patrick,
You mean Run T.M.C. didnt make the top 50? Leitner im sure made the top 50 in college.
    I was just playing bro.

  193. Y's Guy

i looked up the G-Men’s schedule last night and i have to say, its pretty soft for a super bowl champ! i could see them winning the first 6, if they come out motivated. you have to remember that in the nfl, it is the norm for the super bowl champ to have a down year the next season. however, i have rarely seen a SB champ get so little respect prior to the next season. the giants like being under the radar though, so its fine with me.

  196. Karen

Jarrod Washburn has pitched in August for the Mariners like he really REALLY wanted out of Seattle bad— 0-4, 22 IP, 28 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 9 BB, 11 K, 4 HR. 104 batters faced, 7.38 ERA.

Maybe Cashman should revisit that call to the Mariners Dumb & Dumber front office and see if, this time, he can wangle Washburn out of them for nothing.

If someone with any sense at all, maybe some lowly intern, takes the call, that kid might see that if Washburn is gone it clears a spot on the roster for looking at some of the other kids in the system before their AAA season ends. All he has to do is convince Dumb (Howard Lincoln) and Dumber (Chuck Armstrong).

  197. S.o.S.27

“red sox i don’t hate too much”

I cant believe that a Yankee put Beckett in this catagory. Must have been a closet fan.

  198. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive.

    Victor Zambrano? Carl Pavano?

Seriously, my local liquor store is gonna have to send the Yankees a thank you card.

All could be referred to as picking your poison.
