The Yankees have a sense of urgency as they go back on the road. Josh Thomson has the story.

It is expected that Hideki Matsui will join the team in Toronto.

The Star Ledger story this morning quoted Brian Cashman as saying that Phil Hughes had a “bug,” which would explain his poor outing the other night. I like that Hughes is not a complainer and doesn’t make excuses for poor performances, but sometimes you just have say what’s what.

    go hideki!!

  3. needawin August 19th, 2008 at 8:18 am

they had a sense of urgency the last time the went out on the road. im hoping that seeing a guy with real heart and guts, matsui show up to play because they needed him will help them focus on the team and not thier off-field conquests.

regarding jeter and his latest tart-of-the-month; is this guy ever gonna grow up?

Matsui is going to help the team tremendously down the stretch, but I still wonder whose playing time will decrease because of his arrival…

Does Christian get sent down for Matsui?

Do you play Nady in left, Gardner in Center, Abreu in right, with Damon/Matsui sharing DH duties? I guess you could also give every guy in the field a night off each week, but it still seems like a potential logjam out there.

I’m happy to see Godzilla back in the line-up. The guys heart rate doesn’t seem to skyrocket with RISP in contrast to some other Yanks.

  6. Y' August 19th, 2008 at 8:26 am

another guy who wants to bench two of the best hitters in the league so that brett gardner can play everyday.

gardner will get enough playing time, spot starting and

  7. Betsy August 19th, 2008 at 8:32 am

Doreen, that would also explain why Scranton’s site listed TBD as the pitcher and not Phil ………..

  8. needawin August 19th, 2008 at 8:35 am

sorry i got cut off somehow… gardner will get plenty of time, spot starting, pinch running, late inning replacement. with the way this offense is going though, damon, matsui, abreu, nady and giambi will be in the lineup as often as joe can put them in. these guys arent gonna sit because gardner needs to play.

i can tell you guys one thing: godzilla aint leaving a runner on 3rd with less than two outs. He is hitting a bleeping fly ball to get them home, something his peers havent done.

i put no stock in exhibition football, but it was fun watching the giants starters kick the browns around like they were the jv team last night. manning was on, working without his top 3 recievers, his second TD pass was a thing of beauty. i heard that the browns scrubs came back against the giants scrubs later, but watching one quarter was more than i usually watch in preseason, so i didnt see it.

pete, you really need to clean up that list of yankees websites. most of them are just idiots who think photoshop is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but i just jumped in on 3 of them, out of boredom and one of them hasnt posted since january, one hasnt posted since may and another has been close to a month.

Ummm, Hideki wasn’t even supposed to come back this year. I doubt very much he’ll be playing every day. I assume Joe will just rotate the four players depending on who’s on a hot streak. If Gardner keeps hitting and getting on base Joe will keep him in the lineup because the Yankees need playmakers right now. They need base stealers and guys who can go from first to third/home.

  13. Don Pratt August 19th, 2008 at 9:28 am

Did you guys see the front page of Yahoo MLB? It has a coffin with RIP NYY

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb

These people think two lucky years by the Red Sox has somehow erased 90 years of choking to the Yankees. If I was Girardi I’d be printing that front page out and pin it up all over the clubhouse

  14. Y's Guy August 19th, 2008 at 9:29 am

hideki should have had season ending surgery, but passed on it and rehabbed, knowing that he’s gonna need the surgery anyway and will have to go through rehabbing again this winter. also knowing that this may put the start of his contract year in jeopardy. but he came back because his team needed him!

no way they sit him anyday he can play, he’s shown more heart than the rest of this team combined.

but as i say between all the vets getting thier days off plus pinch running /late inning defense, gardner will get plenty of play.

    Jealousy… too funny

damn, a coffin/tombstone to signify the death of the yankees, how original, i think i’v only seen that 4 times this week so far.

5 1/2 games back with 5 1/2 weeks to play, it aint over no matter how many media outlets try to provoke the yankees fans.

    just win today!

  17. needawin August 19th, 2008 at 9:43 am

    flounder:
i have a wonderful wife, not a jelous bone in my body and i have never even looked up these tarts that jeter dates. at some point in the maturing process most men come to realize that the brain is the most erogenous zone in the body, not the (word they wont let me post).

  18. fuhgoobagaz August 19th, 2008 at 10:03 am

Jeter’s been dating Minka Kelly for about 5 or 6 months. I hardly think that having any effect on his season.

    needawin, I think you needtogrowup.

  19. JobaRules... August 19th, 2008 at 10:57 am

FYI Jeter’s double play parade has been down in the last couple weeks and his average is up. Joe needs to start doing what he can to get max value from what he is putting out there. Damon needs to be able to bunt. Hit and run with jeter, opposite field hitting with lefties on lefties, giambi needs to learn to bunt down the 3rd base line. A-Rod needs to stop trying to homer everytime up, especially where a single will do.

These are actually pretty simple parts of the game that people with the skills of the Yankee hitters shouldnt have a problem doing.

I welcome back Matsui everyday of the week. There is no question is knows how to play, and he is as clutch as anyone in the league.

  20. EnterSandman August 19th, 2008 at 12:26 pm

    Pete…..

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve said several times this year while at the stadium that YMCA and Cotton Eye Joe HAVE to go in the new stadium. As for God Bless America I don’t mind it, but it’s time to find a new version instead of Kate Smith’s.

  21. meacham is faster than berra August 19th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Never knew how much I liked matsui, what a class act, hope the rest of team follows his lead, we may actually be able to make up some ground if a few vets start showing as much desire.

  22. RGK August 19th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Is this a wise move, to bring in a bad knee to play on turf? Even just to DH? Could plan B be Sheffield? And for Saturday we have (in my order) Pavano, Hughes, or Zambrano!
The only velocity I know is Hughes and with a “tired” arm he may slip to third!
