Yankees get some swings in

August
19

The Yankees, as they often do after a day off, are having an early optional workout.

In attendance: Johnny Damon, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Cody Ransom, Andy Pettitte (who is taking grounders at shortstop), Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez, Dave Robertson and Wilson Betemit.

Does that make this an optional early blog post? I guess it does.

The TV up here has highlight after highlight of some guy who won a silver medal in trampoline. No doubt a proud moment for our allies to the north.

Transactions: Justin Christian was optioned to Scranton and Hideki Matsui has activated off the 15-day DL. The Yankees released Jason Lane as well.

  1. Laura - I still believe!

“Justin Christian was optioned to Scranton”

I guessed that they were sending Ransom down. Goes to show how much I know.

  2. Gary (avoid the loss column)

No surprise seeing Christian sent down. Britton will again be gone when Hughes or Pavano are called up.

  3. Rubin

This’ll be interesting, will they bemch Gardner?

    Projected Lineup:
    Johnny Damon-CF
    Derek Jeter-SS
    Bobby Abreu-RF
    A-Rod-3B
    Giambino-1B
    Godzilla-DH
    X-man-LF
    Cano-2B
    Pudge-C

This looks like a SOLID lineup, which will have coaches saying “Its mureders row and Cano” again

  4. TKinDC

Glad to hear that Cano is there – the blog-hatred for him would have erupted again.

  5. Rubin

This just in, to give Jeter a rest, Andy Pettitte was named the starting SS, LOL. Imagine it actually happened, I would be dieing from laughter

  6. Ken

It will be nice to have 55 back in the lineup.

Pete how’s the night life in Toronto?

  7. Andrew

I don’t understand what makes trampoline an Olympic sport. But then again, there are many sports that elicit head-scratching on my end. And yet baseball got voted out of the 2012 games…

  8. Gil L

do you think a-jax will be a september call-up?

(i think by the way they’ll try very hard to find a spot for gardner. he’s looked quite good recently, as memories of melky “automatic-out” cabrera quickly fade away…)

  9. hank hal

Going to be an exciting NFL season in NY.

  10. Laura - I still believe!

I found this on the CBS Sportsline site in their Power Rankings section:

”....So help us all, Carl Pavano will likely start for the Yankees on Saturday. He’ll be received as warmly in the locker room as an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonococcus. ... Nobody else will come out and say it, so I will: Bobby Abreu, you are plump and you are slow. Please stop attempting to steal bases in front of Alex Rodriguez. In the best-case scenario, you succeed and then A-Rod is walked. In the worst-case scenario -– which has come to pass nine times in 23 attempts this season -– you erase a base runner at the moment your team’s best hitter is at the plate.”

In his defense, Bobby used to be much better at stealing bases. It looks to me like he’s not getting as good a jump as he used to.

  11. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

brandon, do you ever say anything good about the yankees?

    I’ll post this here…

Me ofcourse I do ! I’m just thinking Damon in CF and the Toronto hitters aiming for CF on thier swings especially w/ the turf. See you guys think Toronto sucks that’s the problem, they don’t. Especially now w/ Halliday and Burnett clicking and Wells and Rios in the same lineup healthy. You can tell me we have this killer lineup I’m sorry I don’t see it.

  12. Fredo Corleone

“Going to be an exciting NFL season in NY.”

    Will be for the Giants

Jets??? Will be if their fandom is enamored with 8-8, 7-9.

  13. Joeysdadjoe

That lineup looks good.In fact its as good as the one we trotted out to start the year.

  14. TKinDC

    FWIW –

Sweeney thinks it will be Pavano, not Hughes per the FAN.

I find that hard to believe.

  15. Laura - I still believe!

“See you guys think Toronto sucks that’s the problem, they don’t. Especially now w/ Halliday and Burnett clicking and Wells and Rios in the same lineup healthy.”

Not only do they not suck, they are only two games behind us and will pass us if we don’t do well this series. Considering who their pitchers are tonight and Thursday, I’m not holding my breath.

  16. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

It’s a bubble gum card lineup until they produce.

  17. frits

good lord…imagine what would have happened here if cano wasn’t at the BP. forget about it.

  18. Nick in SF in Napa

I thinkyou’d want to break up Giambi and Matsui in the projected lineup. Aside from the ever-present GIDP danger, those two might not score from 1st and 2nd on a triple.

  19. Bob(The Original)

Did Christian trip on his way out the door?

  20. Andy In Sunny Daytona

Why should baseball be an Olympic Sport? Not enough countries play it, and no country, outside of Cuba, sends their best players.

  21. Laura - I still believe!

You would think that Giambi would take advantage of some optional BP, but I guess he’s got better things to do.

  22. Bob(The Original)

    Star of the series:

    Adam Lind…book it.

  23. Rob NY

I guess I shouldnt but sometimes I just get amazed by Mike Francessa. The guy is on here preaching about how if the Yankees dont get good pitching they can’t make the playoffs. The lineup, per Francessa, is full of all-stars except Nady and will score runs in buckets if the pitching can just hold on. I gotta wonder if he has been watching the games this year, or just lives in a world where the Yankees are gunna score nigh 1000 runs again. When Sweeny tried to inform him theyre about 200 runs behind last year he pretty much ignored it. The name of his new show should be Francessa off the Fan, as it’s just a matter of time before the listeners and sponsors are no longer interested and he ends up doing overnights. (I can dream)

  24. pat

With the way they have been playing, a few more players should have opted to be there for a workout.

  25. Andrew

Doom and gloom before a pitch is even thrown in this series, just what the doctor ordered.

  26. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

that’s a frickin’ layup Bob but watch Alex Rios out duel him.

  27. daver

I hope Giambi gets moved down in the lineup now that Matsui is back…

    Johnny Damon-CF
    Derek Jeter-SS
    Bobby Abreu-RF
    A-Rod-3B
    Godzilla-DH
    X-man-LF
    Giambino-1B
    Cano-2B
    Pudge-C

  28. G. Love

    I agree with Brandon 100%.

Just adding Matsui to this lineup and beating up Bannister doesn’t erase the fact that these hitters suck when they face hard throwing right handers (Hallyday and Burnett) and soft tossing lefties (Purcey).

The Yankees want to prove something? Win this series. Show us you can actually hit a hard throwing righty other than Beckett.

Sometimes I think this lineup can only hit the 88mph fastball.

I also wish Gardner didn’t have to get benched, but you have to play Matsui if he’s healthy and I’m not taking Damon out.

  29. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

Rob NY what makes you think the chocolate factory knows what pace this offense is scoring at ? It’s amazing how he was preeching the greatness of this lineup while me and my coworkers were like what great lineup, losing fruity pebbles made him lose his sense of seeing.

  30. saucY

“Why should baseball be an Olympic Sport? Not enough countries play it, and no country, outside of Cuba, sends their best players.”

but look at some of the other ‘sports’ in the olympics. tramampoline, ping-pong, handball??? an anti-american committee must have voted baseball out.

but we still have the WBC

  31. Al from BK(I got CC's check right here, get it done Hank!)

“In attendance: Johnny Damon, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Cody Ransom, Andy Pettitte (who is taking grounders at shortstop), Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez, Dave Robertson and Wilson Betemit.”

Interesting that all the would-be free agents(except Andy) decided not to show up thats nice.

  32. pat

since we already have the big three can we call veras edwar and robertson the little three?

  33. S.A.-Can the Yanks win some games? Starting today? This offense is still offensive.

Pavano’s pattern is fairly well established. He goes through the rehab, gets close enough to tease the Yankees into believing he’ll come back, then makes up some kind of lame, undiagnosable injury that prevents him from making the start. It’s happened over and over again. This last time, when he finally had his longed-for surgery, is the only time during the course of his four-year contract where you can confidently say he was really hurt and not just dogging it.

This time, though, there is reason to believe we might see him. After all, he does seem to like money. And when this season ends, so does his contract. He’s 32 years old and very well rested, so it’s reasonable to believe he’s going to want a new one. So he has incentive to come back and pitch (well) for the Yankees. Face it, folks. There’s no pitching to be had. If Pavano has a huge September and the Yankees make the playoffs, somebody’s going to sign him.

This possibility cannot yet be ruled out. Regardless of Brian Cashman’s assertions to the contrary, the biggest thing Pavano has lacked since becoming a Yankee is not health but motivation. He didn’t want to pitch for the Yankees, didn’t want to be in New York. He regretted the deal within months of signing it and was making noise about wanting a trade during its first season. All he wanted to do was hang out in Florida, sleep in and go to bars. And for nearly four years, that is, in fact, all he’s done.

    Oh joy. Our savior.

  34. nick

hey Pete-you look like you’ve got a great body for the trampoline-maybe you should take it up? little more work, little less reflexive ugly American snark, might be good for ya!

  35. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (Latest Blog Entry: Why Abreu is scared of the outfield wall)

    The event is called “trampoline”?

  36. E-Man

    Oh you guys didn’t here?

Girardi is giving Jeter and Abreu a day off against Burnett.

    The line up is:

    Gardner CF
    Damon LF
    Arod 3B
    Giambi 1B
    Nady RF
    Cano 2B
    Matsui DH
    Ransom SS
    Irod C

    Peter:

I never post on here because I am a Blue Jays fan who just enjoys reading baseball blogs. I promise I am not some troll that will bother the faithful on here very often.

I just can’t help this: Did you notice our Olympic medal winner’s name in trampoline? That right, none other than BURNETT.

You are seeing it all over the TV because we are hoping another Burnett comes through tonight.

  38. Glenn

Girardi absolutely MUST bat Matsui ahead of Giambi with Matsui being the better contact hitter.
If Girardi thinks he bruising Giambi’s ego, he’d better realize that Giambi will not be a Yankee after this year.

  39. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (Latest Blog Entry: Why Abreu is scared of the outfield wall)

“Jets??? Will be if their fandom is enamored with 8-8, 7-9.”

The Jets could be dangerous this year. I wouldn’t rule out 11-5.

  40. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

First of all, the guys who are at optional BP should all get a bye from the haters tonight, no matter what they do at the plate. If you can’t believe that this is a team that is trying, despite the results, you probably should become a fan of trampoline or something (whatever that means.)

    :)

“I also wish Gardner didn’t have to get benched, but you have to play Matsui if he’s healthy and I’m not taking Damon out.”

    G. Love that seems to be the current wisdom. It never occurred to me just how much certain posters are more locked into their favorite ways od doing things and can’t apply enough perspective to be able to weigh that against the need to win games and not have their favorites in the lineup!

  41. TKinDC

“I just can’t help this: Did you notice our Olympic medal winner’s name in trampoline? That right, none other than BURNETT.”

    This is too easy –

I hope he gets BOUNCED early tonight.

Thank you – tip your waiters! :)

  42. Y's Guy

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

our best clutch hitter is back! the guy with the most heart on the team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont know if its gonna help, but hideki makes me proud to be a yankees fan every time he plays!

  43. pat

“since we already have the big three can we call veras edwar and robertson the little three?”

How did I write this, when I didn’t write this?

There’s only enough room for one pat around here so at least use caps please.

  44. spellcheck

    Oh you guys didn’t here?

Not to be confused with “hear”.

  45. top of the order

What? Giambi too busy having that third sandwich he can’t be there?

  46. Brandon (FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, Ian Kennedy for Lastings Milledge give me the piece I’ll pull the trigger)

    Tonight’s lineup via: Ed Price

    Damon cf
    Jeter ss
    Abreu rf
    A.Rodriguez 3b
    Giambi 1b
    Nady lf
    Matsui dh
    Cano 2b
    I.Rodriguez c
    Rasner p

    9 – 2 Jays IMO

  47. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (Latest Blog Entry: Why Abreu is scared of the outfield wall)

Pete Abraham would be good on sports talk radio.

  48. hank hal

Atleast we can make up some of the lost Japanese revenue we missed for the past 2 months.

  49. Trevor

    Jets go 8-8 maybe 9-7

  50. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

JB, welcome to this blog. I will tell you that I think the Jays are a tremendous team with some great players, great pitchers, great offense, and a lot of heart. Now that Gaston is there, they also seem to be a team with a heck of a lot of potential. That said, I want you to knock em dead when ever you play the Red Sux and I welcome you to come here and cheer them on. I’ll yell right along with you!

But for this series, I think you can understand how I can wish you nothing but losses. I hope you take it in the proper fan spirit.

  51. Y's Guy

id let it pass if girardi waits to see godzilla get his timing back, but he has to bat behind arod once he’s got it. arod will see much better pitches and hideki will clean up alot of what alex leaves on base.

  52. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Brandon, are you just someone who believes that Toronto is going to do the Yankees in tonight no matter what, or are you trying to telegraph to us that the Yankees would win if only Gardner were in center. (YAWN)

    Just curious.

  53. saucY

trisha – i enjoy your posts!

  54. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

Y’s Guy, I have tears in my eyes already thinking about Sui’s return. I know they are going to flow for real as soon as I see him at the plate.

The one thing that has always stayed with me is how he apologized to the fans when he broke his wrist. Have you ever seen a player do that before, or since? He is nothing but quality.

  55. Al from BK(I got CC's check right here, get it done Hank!)

Somehow this excerpt made me hate Idle even more. Wouldn’t we all like to make 40 million, sleep til 4 PM and go hang out at the bar all night. However you are a major league ball player and until you retire your main focus should be playing the game. This guy doesn’t deserve to wear the uniform.

  56. saucY

“Have you ever seen a player do that before, or since?”

i think Wang may have said something similar when he hurt his foot this year…

  57. Rob Thompson

Great update, Pete. With Hideki back and everyone in the lineup now on fire, things are motion to win the division.

Devil Dogs & Sawx are on the downswing with all of their injuries and tough schedule. We get Joba and Hughes back next 10 days or so.

Let’s keep things rolling tonight by pounding on Burnett.

  58. Kevin K.

Will the extra BP help Betemit. Will he strike out better today as a result? I’m just wondering.

The Olympics get rid of baseball and softball for the 2012 Olympics and they keep an activity like trampoline? When does Wii become an Olympic sport? That can be a workout.

  59. JB

    Trisha—Thanks for the welcome!

I hate the Sox just as much as you guys do. I am an equal opportunity hater (we do that in Canada) because I dislike the Yanks (and the Orioles) just as much. I should hate the Rays, but it’s kind of tough right now.

Cito is a great manager because he gets the best out of his players. He has a proven record of being able to say the right thing to a player and get the most out of him. That being said, he is a terrible strategist. Some of the moves he makes drives us nuts. Second guessing Cito has been a sport in Toronto since 1989. Just because the winning run is at third and John McDonald is batting with a .210 average, don’t always expect a pinch hitter. His bullpen management is also questionable. One thing we miss about Gibbons is his management of the bullpen.

This is going to be a great series because both of our teams have the dilusion that they must sweep this series to get into the playoff hunt. This is really a battle for third place. Should be fun!

  60. RGK

If there is another “pine tar” will Pettitte play 2B or CF?

  61. Al from BK(I got CC's check right here, get it done Hank!)

Here are the 6 AFC playoff teams:
    East- Patriots(12-4), South- Colts(11-5),
    North- Steelers(10-6), West- Chargers(13-3)
    Wildcard 1- Jaguars(10-6), Wildcard 2- Jets(10-6).

Thats how I see it shaking out in the AFC at least.

  62. Drew

They have trampoline in the olympics? ROFLMAO

  63. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter.

saucy – thank you for saying that! That really means a lot to me. And I have to tell you that you bring a smile to my lips every time I read one of your posts leveling the Sux! I feel like we’re kindred spirits.

    :)

  64. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (Latest Blog Entry: Why Abreu is scared of the outfield wall)

    Al from BK,

Jets in the playoffs. I’ll sign for that right now.
