Johnny Damon was back in center field last night and his mistake led to a painful 2-1 loss as Hideki Matsui came back.

Joba Chamberlain hopes to throw off a mound on Saturday. This notebook also has updates on the possible starters for Saturday, some sad news from Pennsylvania and a transaction.

Yankees-Jays again tonight. It’ll be Andy Pettitte against a rookie lefty named David Purcey.

“Pavano, true to form, skipped a bullpen session yesterday, claiming he had a stiff neck. Girardi said that Pavano will try to throw today.”

    Are you serious Pete? Haha.

    Yes, serious.

A rookie lefty named David Purcey? Automatic shutout.

It may be a wrong thing to sent Johnny Damon in center field. Who knew?

Damon’s mistake cost them the game?

How about our 4 and 5 hitter who combined for 7 strike-outs and left 6 men on base?

    This offense is just pathetic.

What do you expect for only 50 million?

The real sad part is what if we
wait till next year”? We will still have the “over 35 crowd” With Damon, Matsui, Posada and soon Jeter. We will still have “Stat Rod” and Cano(has little trade value after this years performance) So where do we get younger and better? Centerfield? We already have three outfielders not counting Abreu. The infield? We may need first base for Posada if he cant throw. We are stuck with a bunch of old men and under performers with little chance to improve. We can get all the pitching in the world and still be in the same place. No clutch hitting and poor fielding. Its great to talk about “cleaning house” but looks like we are stuck with a bunch of players that we just cant move. Not a lot to look forward to in 2009

Damon could be traded if he finished up strong, even if the Yanks have to pick up a little of his salary. Matsui will have knee surgery and I expect him to come back strong next year since it will be his contract year. Not sure about Posada. Anyway, there is about 80 mill coming off the books this year, so lets not put a gloom and doom on 2009 already ok?

“The only discomfort he feels in his shoulder is when the joint remains in the same position for a period of time.”

Sounds very scary. Is not that the only time when you are not supposed to feel any pain?!

Shut down Joba and Hughes for the season. Just do it. Run out Pavano and make him pitch on 3 days rest with a 150 pitch count until his arm falls off as a public service to the rest of baseball so no one ever wastes another dime on that piece of s%$# again.

At least Pavano is getting his excuses ready NOW, instead of Saturday about noon.

Damon and Matsui, if not traded this off season, MUST be regarded as supporting cast…NOT front line personel. This is the trap Cashman falls into each year as he tries to wring value out of these over the hill [or fragile..Pavano last year] players such as Giambi et al. [Or make value from untested players like Hughes and Kennedy]

Cashman is the true problem of the Yankees.

  13. Paulie August 20th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Jim I agree that Cashman is the problem but I dont know how we can put Damon and Matsui on the bench. That would be about $25M in salary not playing. Again we dont have a lot of options going forward. Cashman should be fired just for betting the season on two unknown starting pitchers–but thats another story
