Blog poll: How do you feel about Pavano?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 21, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

So a day many of us never expected would come is upon us. Sometime today, the Yankees could name Carl Pavano as their starter on Saturday.

Talk about shocking. This would be right up there with “Abraham named to U.S. 4×100 relay team” and “A-Rod delivers again in postseason.”

The Yankees are backed into a corner a bit. Pavano has essentially stolen $40 million of their money for four years. But the alternatives aren’t appealing. Phil Hughes is coming off a poor outing and the Yankees are determined not to rush him back. Alfredo Aceves hasn’t earned a spot, not with a 4.78 ERA for Scranton.

Brian Cashman also didn’t want to shed a prospect to add Jarrod Washburn to a third-place team. Can’t blame him for that.

So that brings us to Pavano.

It’s a bit staggering that the Yankees could be playing for their lives with 60 percent of their rotation consisting of Pavano, Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson. That’s not how they drew it up back in spring training.

What do you think? Vote in the poll over to the right.

Ponson and Rasner have done yeoman service for the Yanks this season. A little more run support and these guys would be big time winners.

What will the Yanks do with them next season when the real ‘NYY starting pitchers’ (IPK???) return?

  2. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:31 am

I feel like I want to vomit all over the place. How’s that?

  3. Andrew August 21st, 2008 at 10:34 am

I’d rather watch Pavano and all the hilarity and great (I use that term sarcastically) memories that goes along with him (not)taking the mound, rather than watch Victor Zambrano labor through a 4-inning, 5 walk, vintage Zambrano start. Granted, Pavano might have a similar outing, but oh well, it’s still Carl Pavano actually pitching for the Yankees.

  4. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:37 am

The Yankees can get back in this race. “Can”. I still see nothing from the hitting that shows they “Will”. I didnt realize the Yankees signed the Marlins’ Pavano. Did anyone else hear we got this guy? I bet that is going to work out really well for us. Lets give it some time.

  5. SJ44 August 21st, 2008 at 10:37 am

He’s being paid by the Yankees, correct? So, what’s the big deal? If he is told he has to pitch, then he has to pitch.

Its not like they have other alternatives.

Carl Pavano or Victor Zambrano? Not exactly picking from the A List, is it?

As others have stated on here, if he pitches and wins or, pitches multiple games (I know, but one can dream! lol) and wins, fans will be forgiving.

  6. JR August 21st, 2008 at 10:38 am

There needs to be an option reflecting the inevitable moment right before the game where Pavano calls out due to a hangnail and they have to fly Hughes in from Scranton.

  7. Mark (Brett is Back) August 21st, 2008 at 10:38 am

Would you guys bring Ponson back enxt year, or let him walk. I mean the guy has kept us in every game pitched except that one Redsox game. He has done a great job, but I just don’t know what kid of market will be out there for Ponson.

  8. Carl Pavano August 21st, 2008 at 10:38 am

Sorry guys, but I can’t pitch on Saturday because of a slightly chipped pinky nail.

  9. tonyb August 21st, 2008 at 10:39 am

I would send pavano out there start after start and leave him in for 150 pitches no matter the score. When his arm falls off, I’d make him throw a couple of bullpens.

Oh, and the music I would play for him at the stadium as he warms would be “The Big Payback” by James Brown.

  10. Johnny B August 21st, 2008 at 10:39 am

“I feel like I want to vomit all over the place. How’s that?”

i second that motion. and Carl i hope your “stiff neck” turns out to be okay…were all praying for you

  11. Propaghandi August 21st, 2008 at 10:42 am

Might as well try to get SOME return on investment.

I have no problem with him pitching Saturday as long as Girardi and Eiland think he’s ready.

  12. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:44 am

I agree the Yankees better fly in Hughes, Kennedy, or the Janitor at Camden Yards, to be ready when Pavano trips on a blade of grass and heads back to the DL.

  13. Timothy Clougher August 21st, 2008 at 10:44 am

As stated earlier what other option do they really have?

  14. Christine August 21st, 2008 at 10:45 am

I am rather sick of how the Yankees wasted 40 mil on him.

I really thought we were getting somwhere with him last spring when he moved his locker to be near Andy and was actually pitching well, and then it was all over . . . again.

That being said, I would really like to see the Yankees get some use out of him before his contract is up. If anything, just get 1 win and let him be someone else’s problem next season.

  15. russ August 21st, 2008 at 10:45 am

i really think he should throw every pitch in every game until the end of the year.we are out of it.make pavano’s arm fall off.just kidding

  16. Timothy Clougher August 21st, 2008 at 10:46 am

I wonder what kind of reception he will get from the club house.

  17. Doreen August 21st, 2008 at 10:47 am

I don’t think of Carl Pavano as a bad signing. I think of it as a good signing (it was at the time it was made) gone bad. Make that unbelievably bad. But que sera, sera. If he makes the start, I’ll be there in Baltimore cheering him on, because all that matters at this point is wins. Now who and not how. Just wins.

And if Pavano can’t make the start, then I still don’t want Hughes being rushed up yet again. The thought of Zambrano gives me uneasiness than Pavano, but if he can give 5-6 decent innings, he’ll do, as well.

    Wins. That’s it. Just wins.

  18. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:48 am

As stated earlier what other option do they really have?

    Well…

The Janitor, Dave Eiland can come out of retirement, maybe Brett Gardner since people want him playing.

In reality, there is Hughes, Kennedy, Chase Wright, and dare i say, THE MAN THE MYTH THE IGAWAAAAAAAAAAAA (sunglasses and all)…

  19. Fran August 21st, 2008 at 10:50 am

At this point I’m for any pitcher than can go out there on Saturday and give the Yankees a quality start. If it’s Pavano, so be it.

  20. NongEyeWayneTolleson August 21st, 2008 at 10:50 am

Vomit-inducing sounds about right, as stated above. This guy is a thief.

  21. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:51 am

    The Man!!!
    The Myth!!!
    The Igawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Jobbbbbbba August 21st, 2008 at 10:52 am

Maybe he will throw a perfect game.

  23. Mike August 21st, 2008 at 10:53 am

I say make him pitch. They paid him to pitch and they got nothing. Make him go out there. I only wish it were at home so he could get booed.

Maybe they should pull a Sabathia and the Brewers – make him pitch till his arm falls off. They should get their money’s worth.

  24. NongEyeWayneTolleson August 21st, 2008 at 10:53 am

Carl Pavano will say he’s hurt if they make him pitch more than he wants. He’ll pull out of a start with a strained ear-lobe.

  25. I bought a Melky jersey :( August 21st, 2008 at 10:54 am

Q:How do I feel about Carl Pavano?

A:You know how labor feels? Me either but im assuming they are about the same feeling.

  27. TurnTwo August 21st, 2008 at 10:55 am

“Vomit-inducing sounds about right, as stated above. This guy is a thief.”

you people need to get over it. this guy, like it or not, is going to be incredibly important down the stretch.

if the yankees are going to make a run, he’s gotta pitch well. if he doesnt, forget about it.

  28. JoeT 28 in 09!! I WILL BE RIGHT ABOUT PAVANO!! 5-0 down the stretch August 21st, 2008 at 10:55 am

Where’s the poll choice: Get whatever we can out of him!!!!

  29. GreenBeret7 August 21st, 2008 at 10:56 am

I don’t care which pitcher is on the mound for the Yankees as long as they help win the games, and I don’t care which hitter is playing for NYY as long as they hit and help win games. Doesn’t mean I want them back, though.

  30. jennifer August 21st, 2008 at 10:56 am

They were getting a return on their investment, in the form of insurance checks.

    SJ,

I asked you last week about whether or not a team can put an arbitration clause into a contract and you said you would look into it? I am wondering if you might have?

Where do you see Jeter going forward? Do you move him out of SS? Do you consider trading him if he refuses? Do you keep him at SS knowing he is not very good even though this year it looks like he is better?

Also what do you think of JJ Hardy of the Brewers? Would he make a nice addition for the Yankees? I think there is chance the Brewers move him with Escobar waiting in the wings. Also Hardy becomes more expensive.

  34. pat August 21st, 2008 at 11:01 am

If you’re a fan of the team, you root for the laundry.

You go with the best option available and if that’s Pavano, I say, Go Carl.

  35. JT August 21st, 2008 at 11:01 am

Give it to Chase Wright. He deserves a spot start over some guy who’s used the Yankees for years and will only be using them again to try and get some sort of decent contract out of somebody next year. Pavano has not earned this shot. He doesn’t deserve it.

  36. nemo August 21st, 2008 at 11:02 am

I voted “I’m not happy about it, but the Yankees need a pitcher.”

But I’m really feeling… Who cares? We need any quality pitching we can get, just as badly as we need our offense to hit with RISP.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… this Yankee team does not deserve to be in the playoffs. I would rather not make the playoffs than do, and be embarrassed in the first round, AGAIN.

Here’s looking to the transition/rebuilding year of 2009, that was supposed to be 2008.

  37. Timothy Clougher August 21st, 2008 at 11:03 am

What about Lyle Overbay for 1B, I believe he is a FA.

  38. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 21st, 2008 at 11:03 am

None of the current Yankees seem to be able to beat the
Orioles. Why not give Pavano a shot?

  39. Patrick â„¢ August 21st, 2008 at 11:04 am

At least Igawa is healthy and has been pitching consistently in AAA. It takes a lot longer than a few rehab starts to be ready after TJ surgery. Pavano wasn’t a good pitcher to begin with and now he hasn’t faced major league pitching for over a year and only a few times in the past several years. I think Igawa would have a better chance at giving a quality start.

  40. Alex August 21st, 2008 at 11:05 am

I live in DC & I’m driving up to see the game on Saturday. I think there’s a better chance of seeing Bigfoot on the mound than the American Idle. I will bring my camera to capture some evidence of this mysterious creature named Pavano.

  41. Brandon ( FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, botalo a la basura !) *OUT FOR THE NIGHT* August 21st, 2008 at 11:06 am

Give it to Chase Wright. He deserves a spot start over some guy who’s used the Yankees for years and will only be using them again to try and get some sort of decent contract out of somebody next year. Pavano has not earned this shot. He doesn’t deserve it.

Chase Wright is a no go, they have already told him he’s going to start in AAA this weekend, so it’s between Hughes, Pavano and Zambrano.

  42. Phelps Phan August 21st, 2008 at 11:07 am

“Here’s looking to the transition/rebuilding year of 2009, that was supposed to be 2008.”

Am i the only one who thinks were 1 or 2 players away from being contenders for the title ?

  43. The Real Carl Pavano August 21st, 2008 at 11:07 am

Hey you guys can mock me all you want but I have spiritual enlightenment unlike the rest of you who think life is hitting a few keys on a key board.

You have no idea what pressure I’ve been under the last 4 years and the painful injuries I’ve had to endure.

You think getting paid $40,000,000 and not earning it is easy?

See if you can do it.

    Namaste

    Carl

  44. Patrick â„¢ August 21st, 2008 at 11:07 am

Lets put it this way, Pavano threw 100 innings in 2005, zero innings in 2006, 11.1 innings in 2007 and zero (major league) innings in 2008. So in the past 3 years he’s faced major league hitters in 11.1 innings. Coming off major surgery and rehab, do you really think he’d be any better than Wright, Igawa, my 80 year old grandma, etc?

  45. stanzy August 21st, 2008 at 11:08 am

I voted “I’m not happy about it.” But really, I think they should use him until his arm falls off. Time for the Yankees to get a return on that $40 million.

  46. NongEyeWayneTolleson August 21st, 2008 at 11:08 am

    Nemo,

I agree that this team doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs…and even if they do get there, they won’t get far. As a result, I’m of the belief that the shot should be given to a guy like Wright or Aceves and then eventually Hughes. I wouldn’t give Pavano the luxury of showing off for another team to earn a contract.

I understand the “if you’re a fan you root for whomever”, but I also feel I’m being realistic about this team and their chances. I’d rather go down with a young guy getting a shot than an overpaid, injury-prone FA to be.

  47. Brandon ( FIRE LONG ! clapclap clapclapclap, botalo a la basura !) August 21st, 2008 at 11:08 am

Coming off major surgery and rehab, do you really think he’d be any better than Wright, Igawa, my 80 year old grandma, etc?

    Ofcourse not.

  48. NongEyeWayneTolleson August 21st, 2008 at 11:09 am

Zambrano is coming off an injury like Pavano. To expect these guys to come into a MLB game after being away so long, into a playoff race, and do well, is unrealistic.

  49. 27 this year August 21st, 2008 at 11:10 am

I say we make Pavano bat and then pay the opposing pitcher to peg him. I don’t care where but whatever happens, Pavano will be out for months even if it skins his shoes. Pavano will complain and cry adn I want to see him on the ground crying. Oh, and then, don’t put in a pinch runner. Let him suffer.

  50. Bronx Jeers August 21st, 2008 at 11:10 am

    How do feel about Pavavo?

How does one feel about their bowel movement?

  51. 27 this year August 21st, 2008 at 11:12 am

The thing about Aceves is as soon as he got into AAA, he has had trouble making the jump. He has like a 4.78 ERA and barely goes past 5 innings. I want him to succeed but bringing him to the majors is premature.

  52. Chris NY August 21st, 2008 at 11:14 am

Had Hughes pitched well last weekend, I’d say let Carla rot in AA. Hughes was throwing very well up to that point.

Now, in the interest of not rushing Hughes back, let him pitch at least one more game in AAA and see how he does. And yes, that means let Carla earn at least a couple more dollars out of the 40M he stole.

Then demote his sorry a.. back to A ball for the rest of the season if Hughes throws well again this weekend.

This is final straw. I am outta here. Pete, your Pavano jokes are so old and unfunny. The relentless A-Rod bashing by both Pete and the posters is also quite old and tiresome. I know nobody will care, so no big deal….There are a few insightful posters on this blog that I will miss though. Adios!

    “Phil Hughes gets a win”

“Ian Kennedy lasts 4 innings in start”

I’m sure the club has an option on Lyle, but he made $6,000,000. this year maybe they won’t offer him abritration…

  60. They shoot horses don't they? August 21st, 2008 at 11:21 am

What if Pavano comes in and wins 4 out of 6 starts and looks fairly good doing it?

Does Cash sign him again and take the chance it wasn’t just a flash in the pan? Only to have him succumb to some mysterious injury at the start of next season. OMG!

Or does he pass on signing him and have him picked up by another team where he goes on to win 12 or more for them next season? Imagine the outcry that would create on this blog.

They should have DFA’d him a long time ago and paid him off and just moved on.

LOL at the A-Rod jab thrown in there.

Rodriguez has had 108 plate appearances in the playoffs since joining the Yankees. Jokes about his “un-clutchness” based off the equivalance of 25 games is quite laughable. No one ever goes through a rough stretch, right? Oh, and A-Rod’s ‘rough stretch’ in the playoffs amounts to a .247/.343/.509 line. I wish I had .852 OPS slumps so I can get booed off the field after every time I make an out.

What have Jeter’s playoff numbers been since Rodriguez joined the team? .291/.348/.509.

BUT ZOMG DERECK JETER MR. NOVEMBUR AROD MORE LIKE GAYROD!!!

  65. sunny615 August 21st, 2008 at 11:23 am

    I’m still hoping it’s Hughes.

  66. They shoot horses don't they? August 21st, 2008 at 11:24 am

  67. Timothy Clougher August 21st, 2008 at 11:24 am

I think the Yanks get some money back from the Pavano contract if hi contract runs it’s course.

Somebody smarter about this would know, I believe that is why he’s still around.

  68. Chris NY August 21st, 2008 at 11:25 am

Respectfully, I must ask… Are you insane? Are you surrounded by padded walls? How did you get ahold of a computer?

Just kidding. How does the saying go? I heard it first from my 7th grade football coach: “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me…” something like that.

They didn’t release him because they wanted to collect the insurance money to offset his wasted contract.

Pavano can come back and go 15 and 0 and lead us to a World Series. I still will not say anything but “it’s about time you earned something. Now get out.”

  73. Bill from NJ August 21st, 2008 at 11:28 am

Even if Pavago goes 6-0 with a 2.34 ERA, you DO NOT re sign him. That’s just stupid.

  74. Mark Alan August 21st, 2008 at 11:29 am

I voted that I’m for bringing him back, but I do think he is to blame for his unwillingness to do more than collect a check and whine about his stiff neck or his fractured buttocks. My thoughts are that the man is a pro athlete and was at one point a MLB-caliber pitcher; he might be that now.

He’s being paid. If he’s any good, let’s have him win a few games. If, on the other hand, he’s lousy, he should be arrested then dumped in the Hudson.

  75. They shoot horses don't they? August 21st, 2008 at 11:30 am

I agree. Which is exactly why I want to see guys like Gardner, Christian, and Ransom play more often than they do. I wish we’d DFA Betemit already.

  77. RhapsodyInBlue August 21st, 2008 at 11:32 am

I’m ready for Pavano, could be entertaining.

  78. sunny615 August 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am

Man, I was just reading about Buccholz and his pounding in Baltimore…

And we think Hughes and Kennedy had it tough.

At least tho, Buccholz wasn’t an ass after the game like Kennedy was…

“After a game in which only 30 of his 60 pitches were for strikes, Buchholz was optioned to Double-A Portland.

“People have tough games. I’ve had a tough season,” said Buchholz, who spent two months in Triple-A from mid-May to July 11. “Down there is where you develop. Up here it’s a pennant race. … If you ask if the decision was right, I’d say it was.”"

Prospects are indeed only that until they prove otherwise. It may be a while before either the Sux’s or Yanks’ prospects become productive…

  79. TurnTwo August 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am

“Christian and Ransom play more often than they do.”

except Christian and Ransom arent kids or prospects.

  81. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 21st, 2008 at 11:35 am

LOL. There’s another A-rod in Women’s soccer (and the Packers, too)

I’d rather see Chase Wright than Pavano.

My greatest fear is that Pavano will come up and we’ll lose because he’s not ready. Feels like it’s too soon.

My second fear is the clubhouse chemistry. They should keep in the bullpen like a prized fighting bull. Release him in time for first pitch. So he’ll be raring (sp?) to go.

I know they’re big boys and are supposed to accept him, but human nature’s a powerful thing. Is there anyone in the Yankee organization that actually likes Carl?

How’s this for the power of advertising? The US women soccer team travel to Brazil and yells out in Portuguese, “We want a rematch!” And lo and behold, what did we get? Won’t be a spoiler for those of you on the East Coast. :)

  87. Mark Alan August 21st, 2008 at 11:39 am

    Hiya, Slu.

Pete knows that he speaks for quite a few of his readers as well as himself when he makes light of the otherwise exasperating Pavano situation.

We want A-Rod to do well when he’s most needed. He doesn’t.

We’re not helping the team, but we’re not paid to do that. Pete is paid to report on the team, and we’re just hanging out expressing ourselves about what has turned into a frustrating nightmare.

But I suppose you think Damon’s still an every day CF.

I think it will be good for Carl Pavano to face his teammates in the locker room. I can’t imagine they’re happy with him. Let’s hope he pitches well, and at the very least, for Pavano’s sake, let’s hope he doesn’t go on the disabled list again, especially for something trivial (again).

A-Rod has looked pathetic out there the past few games. When he is hitting its like a chicken running around with it’s head cut off. I have never seen a player of his caliber get blown away by so many 89 mph fastballs. He really needs to wake up or we really have no chance.

    Shocking revelation:

What is the key flaw of the New York Yankees?
    by Frank Della Femina/NJ.com
    Thursday August 21, 2008, 9:57 AM

    AP Photo
Yankees defense cost them the game in Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. One writer at Fox Sports tried to list every baseball playoff contender’s biggest weakness. While he didn’t hesitate to call the Yankees out on their defense, maybe Yankees fans can at least find some salvation in the team’s inclusion on a list of playoff contenders.
Dayn Perry on Fox Sports writes:

The Yankees rank a grim 25th in MLB in Defensive Efficiency, which is a measure of what percentage of balls in play a defense converts into outs. Given the presence of so many sub-optimal defenders on the roster, such a ranking hardly comes as a surprise. In fact, a good portion of the Yankees’ perceived pitching problems can be traced back to bad defense.

“People are always going to have opinions; you can’t help opinions. But as long as everybody in this clubhouse feels as though we can win, we’ll be fine.”

    QUOTING DEREK JETER

I loved reading this. I consider that to be the alpha and the omega, and I hope that the naysayers here take that as a little bit of an in-your-face and realize that you are really pretty down on the food chain in terms of having your opinion mean doodly squat to anyone but each other!

Now I feel the same way about the forum optimists, of which I am one. Our opinions are merely that. I think that we might have a tad more credibility than knee jerkers (who tend to be the constant naysayers) just because kneejerkers are just that in life and instead of trying to look at a bigger picture will immediately go negative.

I don’t like the idea of giving Pavano a shot, because I think his only real motive is to showcase his wares so that he can get another big contract somewhere else for next year …

    BUT

This team is not eliminated yet, or even totally out of it in the sense of being completely unlikely to make the playoffs. They have to use the personnel they have to try to get to the postseason, and if Pavano gives them the best chance to win, then they have to use him. Even if his motivation is to get the best possible new contract, who cares if his best efforts end up helping the Yankees? That’s what he’s being paid to do.

Also, as much as I hate the guy for the stupidity of crashing his Porsche into a garbage truck and hurting his ribs in the middle of a pennant race he could have helped them win, or for the asinine nature (poor pun intended) of his sore buttocks injury a few years back, his absence for the last year and a half was clearly legitimate. No one, not even Pavano, undergoes TJ surgery just for the fun of it so he can get paid for doing nothing.

So he should pitch on Sunday.

The Red Sox may be downplaying Beckett’s situation publicly, but in a worst-case scenario, it could turn out to be a more serious matter.

Dr. Robert Shalvoy of University Orthopedics in Providence does not know the reason for Beckett’s numbness, but he understands the possible ramifications of the pitcher’s symptoms.

“The Sox need to treat this pretty seriously,” said Shalvoy.

The Sox can shut Beckett down and let the symptoms go away, but as the nerves in the elbow continue to weaken, it’s possible the right-hander could need surgery in two-to-three years, according to Shalvoy. The doctor also said that if the Red Sox decide to have Beckett go for a MRI the results will certainly show abnormalities because the pitcher has been throwing hard for a long time.

Shalvoy, who has not examined the pitcher, said normally the type of symptoms Beckett is experiencing take six weeks to go away.

“This is a big deal for the organization and for Beckett,” Shalvoy said. “He won’t get better by missing a start.”

Shalvoy, who has preformed ulnar collateral ligament surgeries, described Beckett’s issue as “prime symptoms” for any pitcher who will eventually need Tommy John surgery to repair the damage.

    Bogeyman,

Nobody would fault a guy for getting injured. The Pavano perception, whether warranted or not, is of a guy that has no heart.

As for the insurance. There are very limited instances where a team can actually collect on an insurance policy. I wonder if Pavano’s situation (or situations) qualify.

There is no reason to not want Pavano to pitch for the yankees this weekend. Theyre in need of a jump start and dont forget Pavano will be pitching for a new contract at this point, and he has to make up for a lot of lost time. I wouldn’t want to stunt hughes’ development/rehab based on the fact that we all don’t really like pavano much, if at all.

If by chance Pavano were to throw a complete game shutout, there would be the usual end of game high-five reception line of teammates from the dugout and a certain percentage of fans would be forgiving and the same for fans that won’t forget what 90% of his contract has been all about.

    With apologies to Johnny Cash:

    CASH-MAN COMES AROUND

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four starters saying: “Come and see.” And I saw. And behold, a white horse.

There’s a Cash-man goin’ ’round takin’ names. An’ he decides who to throw and who to flame. Everybody won’t be treated all the same. There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down. When Cash-man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up. At the terror in each pitch and in each pop-up. Will you pitch, have another injury, or “hiccup?” Or disappear into the pitcher’s mound. When Cash-man comes around.

Hear Giambi, hear Mussina. One hundred million fans a groanin’. Multitudes are marching to Freddy Sez’ little kettle drum. Eiland’s callin’, Carl is cryin’. Tabata’s gone an’ Ponson’s flyin’. It’s George and Hank and Hal’s Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the bullpen. The rookies are all trimming their mitts. The whirlwind is in the bullpen. It’s hard for Carl to kick against the pricks.

Till playoff time, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the Joe Girardi will call his chickens home. The Red Sox will bow down before the Yankee throne. And at his feet they’ll give up the golden crown. When Cash-man comes around.

Whoever is uninjured, let him be uninjured still. Whoever is hot at the plate, let him be hot at the plate still. Whoever is Manny, let him be Manny still. Listen to the lineup long written down, When Cash-man comes around.

Hear the Joba, hear the Damon. Two hundred million dollars wastin’. Multitudes are marchin’ to Freddie Sez’ little kettle drum. Roll callin’, bleacher creatures. Some are drunk an’ some are pukin’. It’s Pavano’s and Zambrano’s Kingdom come.

And Suzyn Waldman is in the press box. Jon Sterling is trimming his wick. Goodness Gracious! She’s in the press box. It’s hard for Carl to kick against the pricks.

In measured hundred-millions and penny pound. When Cash-man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four starters, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Carl. And Hell followed with him.

  149. SteveB August 21st, 2008 at 1:12 pm

I have nothing good to say about Carl Pavano. I think he’s a skunk. That said I am a Yankee fan first and foremost. If Brian Cashman thinks he’s the best choice to pitch Saturday, I’ll put my negative feelings on the shelf and root for him to do well. But I’ve watched him pitch in Trenton and I have not been impressed with his velocity. I wonder if he’s ready (or willing) to pitch for the Yankees. There is a definite possibility that this could be a disaster, I hope not, but it could be one time around in the lineup and out he goes.

I have one question– what about Chase Wright? He’s on the 40-man roster already and he’s actually done quite nicely for himself this season between Trenton and Scranton. He has MLB experience too. I wouldn’t be so quick to sour on him because of that one horrific inning against the Red Sox last April. Other than that, I thought he pitched pretty decently.

….Or maybe Ponson gets ahold of Pavano and gives him a case of crabs.

I imagine Pavano throwing a no-no threw five and then the Orioles bat boy will give him the stink eye and its off the mound and back to the DL.

Hey Pete, how staggering was it feeling you were playing for your lives with Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small? It was until it wasn’t.

Playing for your lives with Rasner and Ponson should only feel staggering if you’re a loser. Both have more than shown they’re equal to the task. Which brings me to another point. I don’t care if Ponson ends up giving up 25 runs tonight (well I do care, but I’m just trying to make a point here) – we should still bring out the fatted calf and have a celebration for what he has done for the Yankees. I am sick to death of the Yankee fan cum “what have you done for me lately” crew. If you don’t have the common sense to appreciate a body of work intead of heaving every time something doesn’t go your way, try the BabiesRUs site!

Pavano is the only pitcher to make more than Clemens per pitch.

  158. BobK55 August 21st, 2008 at 3:06 pm

According to Tyler Kepner of the NY Times = Pavano to start on Saturday.

  159. jj August 21st, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Imagine he pitches well down the stretch and we make it. In that case it takes a little sting out of the contract.

If he is a mutt on the mound. F him and leave him out there till his arm falls off.

this picking on Pavano is truly lame. the guy had multiple surgeries. it’s been unfortunate, kind of like what happened to Don Gullett’s Yankee career in the 1970s. but it’s not like Pavano did anything to merit all the tabloid abuse.

Good for him that he’s back, it would be a fairly quick recovery for TJ surgery. Go Pavano.

he is a good pitcher, he can do the job, wait an see.

  162. kidjock August 21st, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Send Pavano to the mound. Pavano deserves all the criticism he is getting, but times are hard right now. It would be great if the Yankees got back in it, as unlikely as that is the cannot just start bringing up kids. That would send a bad message to the veterans they have on the team who are still fighting.

Baseball doesn’t have the strongest union in the business for nothing, if this were football Pavano would have been cut a long time ago and stealing money from the Cowboy instead.

    We need Pavano!!
    我們都需要痛痛!!

Pavano is being showcased for a trade or a dump – the ynakees won’t keep him. If he appears serviceable he goes in a package over the winter.

Irony – Pavano was the fits to jump from the Championship – Beat the yankees in 6 – famous JT – i think I’ll use Weaver here series — and the yankees get the Short end of the stick — the Red Sox get Beckett – who leads them to 2 WS

Rays – get Burnett who kills Yankees

Yankees get Big Useless from the 2001 D’Backs Mariano error on the bunt (never mind the flare) beat the Yanks series –

he underperfromas against the Little Sisters of the Poor — Red Socks get the Bloody Sock Shilling from the same team –
go on to break the curse

And exactly why do we love the fornt office here??

Oh back to the point — good business testing Pavano – maybe there is a Buck $ to be extracted — but better to write him off – and give the kids in the minors a taste of the Bigs and some experience

Drop Sidney — see I was kind yesterday and the WHIP was lucking all the time — and ive the kids a chnace to get over the Jitters and Let them Play 1 in the House that Soonn Won’t Be Here

Pavano represents yet another Cashman mistake along with
Randy Johnson, Vasquez, Kevin Brown, Benitez, Farnsworth etc! I thought Pavano retired after Cashman the Moron
gave him the big contract! My mistake!LOL!
