<blockquote>Any smart baseball fan will tell you that with the resources the Yankees put into the draft and into free agency, this team will contend for years to come. It’s just going to take some time. A phasing-out process has to occur. Trust Cash.</blockquote>

I see no evidence of there being a great future to come without significant organizational changes. There's not much left in our farm that's safe to assume will become great players, even good players.

Kennedy -- done. Hughes, maybe pans out as a number 3, maybe. Joba -- can he pitch a full season without injuries? What else is there? Nothing for 2009, maybe a few guys for 2010 if they make the cut.

There's no way I trust Cashman. He's failed to get us pitching every single year he's been in full control. His youth movement is bleeding and in tatters. We have so few pitchers left we're starting Pavano on Saturday. What a joke.

He took a team that was a contender and destroyed it this year with some of the worst management moves in decades. His hiring of Girardi was obviously a mistake too.

Cashman is not the worst GM in baseball. But he's a very long way from being the best. He's not good enough for the Yankees. However, sadly I guess he will be back Hank and Hal don't care about anything other than the money.

If they cared about winning he'd have been fired mid-season.

"minny and tampa will have to forfeit all there games because there staffs are to young and that is illegal"

Not to bait the bear, but Stu, maybe you should knock off the name calling. When you don't know the difference between "there" and "their", accusing someone of having a peanut brain or a 40 IQ doesn't make you look terribly bright. Worse, it dilutes your points.

Cashman (and Epstein) both blew it with Santana, and hindsight's a bitch. But throwing 170-180M at CC is a huge risk because the guy is likely going to break down before the contract is half way done. Better to roll the dice and trade for a young stud who's relatively affordable, like E. Santana.

LOL.

This was always a transition year.

They are transition young pitchers into the rotation for what they hope will be a dominant rotation for years to come. They signed who they had to sign. A-Rod, Posada, and Mo will still be the cornerstone vets of this team once the new faces begin to take over. And once those contracts are up, guys like Hughes, Joba, A-Jax and so on will be the cornerstones.

They had to bring back Abreu. They had to bring back Pettitte. But only for this year and perhaps next for Pettitte.

But Giambi, Abreu, Pettitte, Mussina, Damon and Matsui don't figure into this teams plans. They are being phased out. But the Yankeees have to try to compete every year. New York won't have it any other way, so they have to bring back guys like that until a new crop of players are ready.

It was never about this year. It's always been about the (near) future.

Does anyone else feel this way?

It's like the world is coming to an end, and you expect that the government MUST do something to stop the asteroid, and yet each day that nears the end, we further except the fact that after Sept. 21, baseball will no longer exist (in 2008)

2 Months ago, we were saying, no way it will get to that point. George Steinbrenner will come out of retirement, shake down the team, and fire every last person before we miss the playoffs.

Yet here we are on Aug 21, 11 games out of the division, accepting our fate.

jersey jerk read my post I Said jackson, sonnastine ,and garza all had less then 10 wins each.. can you read?

also garza has very very limited experience yes he did go to college..

yeah what about minny; slowey, BLACKBURN, and the other guy are rookies and liriano has pitched 1 other year.. sorry for the facts you moron....

I will explain it so your peanut brain can understand and that would be very slowly so you can understand..

The yankee offense was suppose to offset the young pitching but since the offense SUCKS THAT KINDA HURT THE PLAN. THE YANKS SCORED 960 RUNS LAST YEAR, JERSEY THAT IS A LOT EVEN SOME PERSON WITH YOUR 40 IQ SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT.. They assumed the offense would be now a small amount since guys are getting older but also assumed Cano would continue to develop....

OX -

Arod, Abreu, Posada, Cano, and MO all gave their support of the deal to acquire Santana.

Posada and MO's deals got done right around that time and they commented on it.

Posada said we needed a #1 - http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2007/11/the_yankees_need_to_get.html

Cano advocated it too - http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080114&content_id=2345473&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy

Abreu commented as well - http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071215&content_id=2327135&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy&vkey=news_nyy

Couldn't find the links for Arod, but I remember he was asked about him during his conference call when he signed his new contract. If someone can find that, it should be there.

MO advocated the trade as well after he signed his extension.

<i>Isn’t Stick still a Yankee employee? Why would he speak out against his bosses and Cash? Do you take every interview at 100% face value?</i>

He's Stick Micheals there is no reason for him to lie, he walks if they don't like it, remember the Yankees looked for him not the other way around.

<i>What is he supposed to say? “I told ya so”?</i>

He has more than enough brass to speak his mind.

It is a lack of foresight on Cashmans part.

I know the whole keep Hughes sign Sabathia thing is great in theory. But knowing how the market is don't you anticipate that Santana signing last year is going to be cheap compared to a guy on the open market?

The only reason I can see for not doing it especially if they are now going to overpay for some FA is they thought Hughes was an ace.

It's the only reason.

I know all the lines from the pro Hughes posse here. 22 yrs old, dominated minors, almost no hitter, won in Oct, etc

But his stuff doesn't scream top of the rotation.

I hope I'm wrong but getting passed over for Rasner, Ponson and Pavano doesn't make me think so.

Ox do you really care what the overpaid players feel ? seriously who cares soon they will all be ex. players

Posada
Jeter
Giambi
Abreu
Matsui

All the vets that have expirings or are 2-3 years away will soon all be gone. It ends, the FA splashes the not bringing up young prospects all of that ends.

Prospects is the way to build a team. The Red Sox are doing great with it. As do the Angels, Diamondbacks, Twins and so on.

Developing your top prospects and smart free agent signings. The only reason it looks bad is b/c the Yankees are a couple years behind the Sox as far as drafting aggressively.

The Yankees also take more chances in the draft. They take high ceiling but risky picks (Brackman, Joba) and a lot of picks out of high school with upside.

Most of the Sox picks are more sure things. Safer picks. Pedrioa and Lowrie all played Pac-10 ball and were stars.
