Pettitte is not a free agent. The club has a 2009 option and will likely exercise it unless he retires. Under either scenario, no compensation picks.

If you decline an option and offer arbitration, you get draft picks.

Pudge signed a deal for more than he was with to go to Detroit as part of Detroit's efforts to make itself a viable club that Free Agents would want to go to. He would be awarded less by an arbitrator than his current salary. The Yanks would like to have him back as insurance on a 1 yr. deal via arbitration, but he wouldn't resign with Ny, because he doesn't want to be the backup, which he will be if he re-signs with us and Jorge is well. He won't want to take the chance that he will be a backup. Also, this is likely his last opportunity to get a multi-year deal right now on the open market. if he backs up for NY next year, he will not likely get a multiyear deal after that.

Giambi would be awarded less by an arbitrator than the $22 mil he'll make this year. This is likely his last opportunity to get a multi-year contract and he wouldn't possibly accept arbitration.

Marte is not a free agent. The club has a 2009 option and will exercise it.

Pavano is gone and Ny will not get any picks.

Abreu and Moose are free agents and the Yanks will offer both arbitration or re-sign them. Moose has a few more years in him and will want to try to get 300 wins. The Yanks would be screwed without him this year and will likely resign for a similar amount to what he made this year hoping he offers some stability to the staff. Moose would resign if there is anything close to reasonable offered to him.

Keep in mind the Yanks get an extra pick for each of the draftees that didn't sign this year, so they get 2 first rounders anyway.

The danger is that if the Yanks sign Texeira and CC Sabathia/Ben Sheets or Manny, they lose first round picks.

Uh, it’s not an automatic raise.
Exactly, I don't know why this wasn't mentioned earlier.

Players not yet eligible for free agency can't have their salary cut more than a certain percentage, and that applies to arbitration, but once you're a free agent, the arbitrator decides which of the two salaries is most fair, even if the one he decides is the team's offer of the minimum.

1. We're assuming that this guy has really reverse-engineered the Elias rankings.

That remains to be confirmed.

2. No way is Farns a Class A.

3. I posted this on RAB last night, but if Pudge is a very high B FA, he has a higher probability of signing with another team (because the other team doesn't have to forego a 1st round pick for what's almost a Class A FA). At the very least, there's a higher chance he'll sign for more money.

Conversely, if Pudge is a Class A FA, the chance that he gets signed decreases (and surely the amount of money he gets decreased), and the chance that he accepts arbitration from the Yankees increases.

Now I can think of worse things than having Pudge under contract for next year (both as insurance for Posada and as a trade chip), but maybe the Yanks don't feel that way.

V, How do you know what will happen with Pudge? Maybe Cashman made Pudge not being able to accept arbitration part of the deal? Pudge wanted out of Detroit so badly he could have agreed to that. No one knows for sure about any of this.

They won't get any picks for Pudge as they will never offer him arbitration.

The Good news is if pudge stays a B level FA then we don't have to offer arbritration to get the picks
and forgive me if i'm wrong but i'm almost positive they give the ratings out by your 2 year performance, no way farnsie's an A he may be a B just cus of this year but not an A
