Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.35) vs. the Baltimore hitters.

Radhames Liz (4-3, 7.47) vs. the New York hitters.

Notes: The Yankees are 5-7 against the last-placed Orioles this season, getting outscored 69-58. … The Yankees start the day 10.5 games back in the division and six games behind in the wild card.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: The Yankees are 24-24 against teams in their division.

MILESTONE ON DECK: Derek Jeter has 2,499 hits. He is one shy of becoming the 88th player in history with 2,500. Only five active players have more hits: Ken Griffey Jr. (2,657), Omar Vizquel (2,634), Gary Sheffield (2,594), Pudge Rodriguez (2,593) and Luis Gonzalez (2,577).

MOOSE MANIA: Mike Mussina (16-7) has not won 17 games since 2003. … He has 266 wins in his career. He is tied with Bob Feller and Eppa Rixey for 35th place in history. Jim Palmer is in 34th place with 268 wins.

Back later with updates.

UPDATE, 5:47 p.m.: OK, here is what we have in terms of baseball. Carl Pavano feels good and can throw around 100 pitches tomorrow. … Joe Girardi said the Yankees would have “to be creative” in how they build up Joba’s arm strength. That’s secret code for he probably will be used out of the bullpen for a while. … Dan Giese is here and threw for the first time since being placed on the DL on Aug. 15.

Here’s the important stuff. I want to tell you about four really good guys.

Johnny Damon, Billy Traber and Dave Robertson: The team got to its hotel in Baltimore around 2:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., those three guys were in a car headed to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington to spend time with wounded vets.

Johnny, as many of you know, is a spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project.

I only wish that I could report that all 25 players made that trip. But good for Johnny, Billy and Dave for doing so.

Bobby Abreu: The Venezuelan Little League team lost in the Little League World Series in Williamsport yesterday. Bobby arranged for their entire travel party to attend the game tonight. He rented a bus to bring them here, paid for their tickets and dinner, the whole deal. The kids were on the field for batting practice and Bobby is bringing over all the guys to meet them.

Bobby is one of the most popular players ever from Venezuela and the kids were wide-eyed to meet him. What a cool thing for him to have done, it has to be a thrill of a lifetime for those kids.

UPDATE, 7:15 p.m.: There you have it, 2,500 hits for Derek Jeter. Then A-Rod and Giambi combined to bring a potentially big inning to a grinding halt for what seems like the 2,500th time this season.

UPDATE, 7:58 p.m.: Why do the Yankees insist on trying to have Bobby Abreu steal bases? He’s 14 of 24. That’s not good. This isn’t that hard. Tell him not to run.

UPDATE, 8:17 p.m.: More base-running blunders as Giambi tries to take second on an outfielder (Nick Markakis) with 13 assists. He now leads the league with 14.

Somebody needs to figure out how many outs the Yankees have run into on the bases. I bet it’s at least 40 more than last season.

UPDATE, 8:33 p.m.: Wow, Cano hit a bomb there. 425 feet onto Eutaw Street. Then Molina snuck one over the wall in left. That’s eight times this season the Yankees have gone back-to-back.

3-3 and the Moose is back in it.

UPDATE, 8:55 p.m.: The Moose has settled down a bit and retired five straight. He’s usually pretty good at managing those nights when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

Of course he needs his teammates to score a run or two, which is a tricky proposition.

UPDATE, 9:36 p.m.: Hey, A-Rod got a double. 2nd and 3rd and nobody out down by a run. They can’t screw this up, can they?

UPDATE, 9:41 p.m.: Somebody named Kameron Mickolio is pitching for the Orioles. I found his photo on line:
cornholio.jpg

UPDATE, 9:42 p.m.: And Cornholio throws a wild pitch, the game is tied. Are you threatening me?

UPDATE, 9:43 p.m.: A single by Nady off Cornholio gives the Yankees the lead. What a game. Moose is off the hook. Meanwhile Mo hasn’t pitched in five days.

UPDATE, 10:01 p.m.: OK, Mariano Rivera in for a four-out save. Hopefully somebody told him that this is in fact a save situation.

Man, Damaso Marte is shaky. Mora hit a rocket to third and then he hits Huff.

    Pete,

All the Natty Bohs are on me tonight.

  2. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I wouldn’t expect anything different, thout maybe Hideki deserved to move to 7, Oh well live by the sword, die by the sword.

  3. Brandon ( WOO HOO PAVANO PITCHES ON SAT, LIQUOR NIGHT FOR ME) August 22nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Giambi has pics of GI Joe that’s it, it has to be and WTF Damon hasn’t missed enough plays at CF already. Loss.

  4. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

    Sorry, thought…my finger’s aren’t working..

  5. NongEyeJon August 22nd, 2008 at 3:48 pm

It is obvious that there is a man-crush going on between Girardi and Giambi. To have that guy still in the 5th spot is criminal. I have been one of Girardi’s big supporters, but at this point, I just dont know how he can be defended on this point.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 22nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Would love to see Moose go more than three innings against the birds.

  7. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Sorry again, I thought Hideki deserved to move to 5th..

  8. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

I generally don’t complain about the lineup, but I’m starting to get really irritated with Giambi in the 5-hole. We don’t need to appease a man who’s going to collect $5M in 2 months.

  9. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

They are saying they haven’t given up, but action’s speak louder than words.

  10. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I think Moose will pitch good, I just hope we support him with some runs..We should it’s not a power pitcher we are facing..

  11. Andrew August 22nd, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Joe must have liked Jason’s approach last night, and he must still remember that grand slam, because the Giambino is rolling at a solid .212 clip this month, and he hasn’t gotten any extra base hits the entire month save for homers. He’s a really multi-faceted, ideal #5 hitter, though.

  12. NongEyeJon August 22nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I never thought I’d see the day when I was looking forward more to a Moose start than watching the rest of this team…how the times have changed.

  13. NongEyeJon August 22nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Andrew, We obviously have all missed those signs. How ignorant of us to not be on the same wavelength as GI Joe.

  14. ohgodno August 22nd, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    Rebecca,

Is that really you? That doesn’t sound like you. I think this team is grating everyone’s nerves.

I found this article the other day. Thought it would interest you.

  16. Scout August 22nd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Funny Pete’s stats, show Giambi is 0 for 2 with 2 k’s against this guy, like I said actions speak louder than words.

  17. Andrew August 22nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

In case Joe doesn’t have a big enough sample size with just August, The Giambino, the King of the Golden Thong, The Mustachioed Mauler, is mashing at an amazing .224 clip since the calendar flipped to July (that’s 26/116 with 1 double, 7 home runs, 36 Ks). Don’t know if Girardi realized that July was almost 2 months ago, since he’s been so busy keeping the faith in “the guys in the room”.

  18. Al from BK(Brett and the Jets tomorrow night!) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Has anyone called the Yanks dead today? Did anyone catch what Fatcessa had to say.

  19. NongEyeJon August 22nd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

So all-in-all, save for a decent month and a half, Giambi has been horrid this year, correct? Way to earn that $21 million. Another heist of epic proportions…one of the others will be on display tomorrow.

  20. 27 this year August 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

I would love to see Miranda get a shot up here just to take some swings. He can’t really hit worse than giambi or play defense worse so it isn’t really a downgrade. At least, in Sept Miranda would be up/

  21. SMS47 August 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

The Big G loves Baltimore. The Warehouse shots he hit in June will not be forgotten by the O’s staff, so its time for more fun. He’ll come alive here. Go Stache’!

  22. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

damon in center? o boy this is going to be another roller coaster.

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 22nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    mel: It is me.

Moose has been amazing this year, and one of the best reasons to watch the Yankees.

That said, his numbers this season against Baltimore aren’t very good.

  24. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

heres some bright news for all of us. the sox no longer lead the wild card. the twins do!!!!!!

  25. raymagnetic August 22nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Is it safe to say that Jeter is one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game? Or am I Jeterating?

  26. Rocco August 22nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm

PETE COME OVER. I LIVE A BLOCK FROM THE STADIUM!

I’m also sitting right under the press box on Sunday. I’ll probably harass you. Just kidding.

  27. wolf man (2008 is over) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm

francessa said if we don’t sweep baltimore, then its over. said we have to win 5 of 6. 3 vs. BAL, 2\3 vs. BOS

in his voice, he sounds resigned to the fact that there will be no playoffs this year.

  28. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    j,

lol. That is some good news.

Best case scenario-we make the playoffs.

Otherwise, I’d prefer that one of the central teams take the WC.

And if I could be granted another little wish, it would be that the Rays not win a single playoff game.

They would be insufferable if they had playoff success.

  29. COL 88 August 22nd, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Imagine if there are no Yankees or Red Sox in the playoffs? FOX will be irrate.

  30. 86w183 August 22nd, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Good thing Molina’s in there. Yanks are 3-8 with Pudge “no pitching inside please” Rodriguez behind the plate.

  31. NongEyeJon August 22nd, 2008 at 4:14 pm

The only thing I’m hopeful for this year…is ruining the Sox’s season. Knock them out…and I’m happy.

  32. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:15 pm

call me crazy or paranoid, but does anyone else suspect that all these teams put their best pitchers against the yankees even if it meant they had to come back on 3 or 4 days rest. and also dont they seem to roll over for other teams. while that is pure speculation, i think it could be the case.

  33. S.A.-Jersey=The armpit of this blog. This offense is still offensive. August 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    Just win this game somehow

  34. Brandon ( WOO HOO PAVANO PITCHES ON SAT, LIQUOR NIGHT FOR ME) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm

The fat lady will sing but it will have a diet coke in hand.

  35. ray (sox fan) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    Mel,

Please don’t tell any of my fellow Sox fan friends, but I am kind of hoping that Moose wins tonight and makes it to 20. Should I put on the pinstripe boxer shorts?

  36. Glenn August 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Juan Miranda will be a September callup when the AAA playoffs are concluded.
This will be the start of seldom seeing Giambi in the lineup save for the final game he’ll play at the Stadium in a Yankee uniform on 9/21.
The Yankee will also want to get some looks with Nady at 1st base in the event he’s needed at the position on occasion in 2009.

  37. Andrew August 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I promise this is the last Giambi post I make, but his numbers against the 4 AL East teams combined are absolutely stellar this year. He has hit a whopping .208 (26 H/125 AB) in inter-division games, with 3 (3!) doubles, 6 long balls and an 18/36 BB/K ratio. 11 of those 26 hits did come against Baltimore, so I guess that’s a good sign going in to the weekend…but a bad sign since Boston is coming to town.

  38. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    ray,

Did you ever take them off? :)

  39. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Hope Moose makes it to 20 also, but in order to have a real shot at it, it might be best to ask him to waive his NTC, that we’ll put him thru waivers and if we can work out a deal with an AL contender, we’ll make a trade, telling him we want him back as a FA.

  40. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    j,

You’re not paranoid. Crappy teams also used to roll over when they played contenders if it hurt the Yankees.

If these teams played as hard against other teams as they do the Yankees, they’d have rings themselves.

  41. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

It’ll be a cruel joke if Moose only gets to 19 wins. I thought he had a bunch of those, but I think he’s only had one 19-win season.

  42. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:24 pm

thats what annoys me. when teams are in “spolier” mode. play hard and you dont have to be a spolier.

  43. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

the cruleset fate moose suffered was the almost prefect game. one strike to go and i couldnt believe that bloop fell in. heart-breaking.

  44. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    J

I think it’s “paranoia.” Just about every pitcher we face has made us look pathetic at the plate. Tonights our best chance to take a game from the Orioles.

    Question?
Do we want Abreu back on a 2-3 year contract? One year? Good-by?

  45. JB (Blue Jays Fan) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Strange vibe at the Jays game last night. A lot of Yankee fans mixed in with Red Sox fans who where there to warm up for this weekend’s series against them. The Red Sox fans were starting chants that Blue Jays fans followed. In Toronto, we thought songs and chants were only for soccer. A Yankee fan from New York said to me during yesterday’s blowout while pointing at a guy decked out in Red Sox gear: “Save some of this crap for these guys”. I promise you that as Blue Jays fans we will do our best to cheer our team to beat the snot out of the Red Sox. We are 6-2 against them this year but this series is going to be tough. Our best bet is tonight, but I am not sure about the other games with Lester and Dice-K. There will be no Halladay and no Burnett in this series.

The Yankees can easily take two of three here and if you get anything from Pavano, a sweep is a possibility. I saw Liz at the Rogers Centre earlier this year and don’t know why he is considered a prospect.

  46. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    Yankee Trader,

I used to be in the Abreu back for a year or two camp, but I’m tiring of his defense. And where did all the BB’s go?

Someone pointed out the other day that we’re just not a good defensive team. I’d like to see that change.

  47. Keith August 22nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm

This weekend will be as close as I’ve come to the ledge all year if Millar continues to have his way with Yankee pitching.

  48. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Put Moose on waivers!! Trade him to an AL contender so he can finally realize 20 wins, then resign him as FA. We’d be doing him a favor!!

  49. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

nah, they’ll live as long as the Cubs are still in it.

  50. j August 22nd, 2008 at 4:31 pm

the good news. camden parks is a great hitters park, so that should give a slight boost to the yankes letahrgic offense.

  51. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

    Mel

I’m for letting Abreu become a FA. Let the Yankees do their homework, and try and trade for the next young outfielder, who could be a real asset, like Carlos Quentin turned out to be for the White Sox.

  52. Scorpio August 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Since the Yanks look pretty dead, I actually wouldn’t mind a Cubbies/White Sox World Series. That would be kinda fun, I’d actually watch it.

Needless to say, anybody but the Red Sox. Can’t stand Pabelbon.

  53. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm

    Keith
We could have put a claim on Millar and tried to trade for him, or allow the Orioles to dump his contract on us. He becomes a FA, so doubt it would have cost us much.

  54. GiamBYEBYE August 22nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm

    Still with Giambi 5th?

    Stubborn much?!?

  55. Fredo Corleone August 22nd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Yankees are only 2.5 games out of a protected draft pick in ’09. That’s encouraging.

  56. Clay Buchholz Stole My Laptop: My latest blog entry: True Yankees of the last 35 years. (aka Joe) August 22nd, 2008 at 4:44 pm

It would be fun to knock the Red Sox out.

  57. Wait. Worry. Who Cares. August 22nd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

We should just tank this season now and wait to get Stephen Strasberg.

  58. stuart August 22nd, 2008 at 4:55 pm

yeah Quentin steal trades happen every year. teams often trade the future league MVP for nothing…

that is called a lucky trade, AZ gave him away….

yanks are not making the playoffs but lack of effort is unnacceptable regardless.. win 3 this weekend they are still not making the playoffs but winning is fun anyway…

  59. pat August 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pm

LOL Has anyone seen the Pavano returns promo on YES?

It says, after a year of waiting, Carl Pavano makes his return to the mound for the Yankees.

    Have we been waiting?

  60. Jose August 22nd, 2008 at 5:05 pm

    Rooting for a Rays-Brewers WS.

  61. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 22nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

If the Yankees don’t make it, I’m rooting for the Cubs all the way.

  62. G. Love August 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm

When I saw Giambi in the 5 hole tonight that was a sign.

A sign that I need to stop watching the games.

If Joe Girardi doesn’t care enough about this season to put that slab of meat in an important spot in the batting order where he will do nothing, then I don’t care enough to watch anymore.

It’s ludicrous. I just cannot understand why this organization is showing any deference or respect to Giambi who is putrid at the plate.

After that Miranda kid hit 2 more dingers last night is hitting with RISP I can’t imagine why this organization is still trotting out Giambi’s corpse.

Waive him already, pay his buyout and end this nonsense with him.

I’d rather see Betemit, Cody Ransom, Miranda, Shelley Duncan, Eric Duncan and Sandy Duncan than Jason Giambi.

He might be good for a quote, but he has helped more than most to sink this season.

You think Matsui taking Hallyday deep might be a sign to put him back up and move Giambi down.

Nah. Girardi is real out of the box thinker. He’s still sitting there in his office looking at the pathetic numbers telling himself, “these guys are due for a real offensive explosion”.

If they fired Girardi after the season I would have no problem with it at all.

  63. A-Fraud.. 100 ways to prove the yanks in 09!!! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm

why is giambi still in the 5th spot???

  64. LLIME August 22nd, 2008 at 5:13 pm

That Detroit-Tampa-Seattle-LA 10 game trip is going to be brutal. For an old team that will likely be playing for nothing and will be stunned, thats going to be a tough trip for the players.

  65. RSM August 22nd, 2008 at 5:14 pm

No sense beating a dead horse, but for the record, put me in the swap Matsui & Giambi in the line-up crowd.

  66. murphydog August 22nd, 2008 at 5:15 pm

13 straight years in the playoffs despite developing an over-reliance on acquiring expensive FAs and older players, mishandling the farm, the draft and the prospects – I’d call that a pretty good run. Now they pay the piper.

It’s easy and fun to be a fan when the going is good, but you don’t always learn a lot of baseball. When the going is bad you see what doesn’t work, and then see all the big and little things they do to get the team right again. The Yankees are a first rate organization so they will do what it takes. It may take them only another year or it might take more. But this is chance to watch and learn as they go through this process.

  67. j August 22nd, 2008 at 5:18 pm

they should move arod to the 2nd hole and jeter to lead off.

  68. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Need to trade either Matsui or Damon in the offseason. Posada will be doing a lot of DH’ing, so there isn’t room for two aging lefty hitters that can’t field.

  69. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:19 pm

****warning: I am about to complain about the lineup, so those of you who hate reading such comments might want to skip over this.

What….the….crap….IS DAMON DOING BACK IN CENTER, GATDAMMIT?!?!?!??! Why? What possible reason is there to play him at that position? It’s ridiculous all around – you’re embarrassing him by putting him in a position he can no longer play, you’re sticking it to Brett and sending him and the other youngsters the message that hustle and successful AB’s will only get you benched on this team, and worst of all, you’re hurting the defense behind Moose, who hardly deserves such machinations!!!!

And don’t even get me started on Giambi batting 5th, I barely have the energy to tackle this Damon in center nonsense. Did Brett run over Girardi’s cat with his car or something? Seriously WTF??? Let the kid play, it’s what he was brought up to do!!!!

  70. NYU Bobcat August 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Matsui really needs to be batting 5th…no sense in having a black hole behind A-Rod.

  71. RSM August 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

    murph,

I agree. EVERY team has to do a little rebuilding from time to time. All those long, high dollar, veteran deals had to catch up eventually. This team is old. 2008 is the end of an era, and the ground work is already being laid for the future. 2009 is the real rebuilding, and 2010 could be the beginning of a new dynasty. We’ll see. For all their faults, at least we have ownership committed to winning and a GM with a plan. Not like Pittsburgh or Baltimore, who have been rudderless for some 15 years. Now that’s pain.

  72. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

BBB — By the time September 1st rolls around and the Yankees head out on the road, I believe Gardner will see regular action in CF. I think they’re just putting on a brave face for another week or so. (Not that I agree with this approach)

  73. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Oh, and as far as the playoffs, my grandfather would roll in his grave if he knew I was saying this, but I’m rooting for the Dodgers (if they make it). I want Mattingly to get a ring, even if it is with the wrong team. Plus, the D’backs really annoy the crap out of me (yeah, still, and probably always) and I’d love to see the Dodgers send them to the golf course at the end of Sept. I think it is possible, too.

But I’d also enjoy seeing the Cubs win it all. It’s unamerican not to, and they have some of my favorite ex Yankees on the team. Plus, my Bergen county homie Mark DeRosa.

And in the AL, if the Twins can keep the Sux out of the playoffs then Go Twins all the way!

  74. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Folks, I don’t think we should be so sure about the Yankees improving quickly after this season. The AL East is now a different beast. Tampa Bay is going to be good for a while; Boston will continue to be competitive; and, if Toronto can upgrade its offense, their stellar pitching will keep them in the hunt. This isn’t the AL East circa 2003-2004.

  75. Doreen August 22nd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I haven’t read a thing since about 2 p.m. – my daughter had a doctors appointment – BUT when I got home, my husband told me this:

Our personal trainer told him that he got a call from none other than Carl Pavano! Seems he was looking to do some work Wednesday and Thursday to make sure he was in top form on Saturday. As it happened, what Carl needed and how our trainer works didn’t mesh for this purpose. Also, my trainer is not a baseball fan, so he had to look up who Carl Pavano was.

Also, I just finished listening to Billy Connors (NYY pitching coach in Tampa) on Dibble and Kennedy Show on XM. He thinks Pavano is back. Said the only pitch he still needed to work on was his slider, but that his volume was good and that his out pitch (can’t remember what it was) is working for him. Said people may be very surprised by what they see Saturday. He said a lot of other things. He was asked about the decision to bring Hughes and Kennedy into the rotation in April, and whether he thought they were ready. He kind of answered in an indirect way: He said Cashman, Girardi and organizational people met and made the decision that those two were ready. I inferred from that that he may have disagreed with that decision, but he did not say that outright. He says Joba is basically one of a kind, old-school, confident and tough, does not want to get beaten. Fully supports Joba in the rotation. A great listen.

Now, to go back and read the last few scores of posts and Pete’s posts to catch up. Go Moose!

  76. McGeorge Bundy August 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

So, Pete, with Springsteen set to play at INVESCO Field this coming week before Barack Obama accepts the nomination, and giving the current state of the Yankees, are you thinking about ditching the Yanks for a plane ride to Denver?

  77. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Murphydog, well said on your post at 5:15. I agree and am even looking forward to the process (and it is a process) of our ascension back up to the top. I was born in ’81, so it’ll only be the second such ascent I’ve ever seen in my life, but this one will be even more satisfying than the last because I now know the taste of victory and how sweet it is to get back there.

I think a lot of people are down on our long-term plan because of the struggles some of the prospects have undergone this year. Personally I am still on board and think it’s a bit ridiculous to dismiss the youth at the first sign of a problem. I know we all hoped that this transition would happen overnight without any down years in between, but it’s hardly realistic to expect that, much less want to blow the whole thing up if it doesn’t happen immediately. Not to sound corny, but it’s not just the destination, it’s the journey.

  78. The DisabledMess August 22nd, 2008 at 5:31 pm

I know it’s just me but I have a strange feeling that Pavano is going to pitch great.

  79. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

ZMan777- Actually, that does make sense. I hope you’re right that it’s only a matter of time before he earns the full time starting nod. I just hate to see Damon out there tonight, for Moose’s sake. He is so close and I think every effort should be made to help him win games, including putting the best possible D behind him. This is not even a case of sacrificing Moose’s individual accomplishments for the greater good of the team, because right now, Moose’s outings pretty much are the sole greater good of the team.

  80. george August 22nd, 2008 at 5:35 pm

I hope Pavano pitches the way he pitched in game 4 of the 2003 World Series.

  81. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Damon is in the top ten in the league in hitting.

Gardner can’t get around on average fastballs.

We made the choice to go with more offense. What’s so hard about that?

We don’t have the luxury of carrying Gardners weak bat.

  82. Doreen August 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    murphydog -

Going through tough times makes the good times sweeter, and you take them less for granted, both in life and in baseball.

  83. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Oh, and also, about not expecting the Yankees to show vast improvement/take back the AL East right away, I agree it is a very competitive division thus making it harder for us to do that, but at the same time, if we have a rotation of CC/Wang/Joba/Moose/Andy next year, I have a hard time seeing how that wouldn’t be the class of the division, regardless of its very high level of competition.

  84. pete August 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I can’t wait for edwar to strike out kevin millar tonight. that is going to be so awesome.

  85. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 pm

“We don’t have the luxury of carrying Gardners weak bat.”

Right, because we’re in the heat of a pennant race…oh wait!

  86. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Pavano pitching tomorrow is a joke.

That is how little faith this organization has in Hughes and Kennedy. That they will run that disaster and quitter out there in must win games.

That is how bad Hughes must look in Scranton. I guess all the 99mph and consistent mid 90′s talk is just that. Talk.

  87. pat August 22nd, 2008 at 5:39 pm

The following was written by Buster Olney for a NY Times opinion piece that fits in with murphy’s pay the piper post:

“….the Yankees must go through a long reconstruction of the farm system before they have another dynasty. That means hanging onto young prospects, as former General Manager Gene Michael did in 1994, when he refused the orders of Steinbrenner and didn’t trade Williams.

But that may not be possible. Investing in the farm system now would mean spending less on big-league acquisitions, which might mean fewer victories in the immediate future — something that’s probably not acceptable in the manic and demanding world of the Yankees. Expect Steinbrenner to make changes in the off-season — just don’t expect the right ones.”

While relevant today (hopefully except the last line), it was written in October 2004.

  88. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:40 pm

I’ll probably take some barbs for this, but I’ve never been a big Mussina fan. I’m very happy to see him winning, for the Yankees sake, but until this year he would whine about anything under the sun after a loss. I never saw him as being a team-first type of guy.

  89. retroclutch August 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm

    @Jersey

No, we can’t carry Giambi’s weak bat. We can carry Gardner’s weak bat. Garnder bats 9th and his job is to play plus defense and lay down the occasional bunt. Giambi’s job is to protect Arod and drive in runs but he can’t do that. So the weak bat on the team is Giambi not Gardner, because at least when he isn’t hitting like Giambi he can at least play solid defense.

  90. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I really wouldn’t start assuming that CC Sabathia is signing here.

A lot of teams have money nowadays. And Cashman’s MO hasn’t been to overpay for anything besides his own guys.

You’re setting yourself up for a big fall when he uses the Yanks, Mets, and Sox to get a huge deal from a WC team.

  91. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Giambi has 35 games left in pinstripes. I can tolerate that, but nothing more.

  92. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Jersey — I agree with you on CC. He’s a crapshoot right now.

  93. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Giambi’s weak bat is relative and pretty absurd.

He has 24 homers and an OBP of 386. A slugginf of a solid .500. That’s not exactly weak.

He may not be lighting it up with RISP but who on the team is? Tough to call him a weak bat.

We’ve all seen what Gardner brings to the table. I think its a tad better to have Giambi’s bat in the lineup than Gardner. We had first rate D from CF for 100 games and what did it get us?

  94. jennifer August 22nd, 2008 at 5:47 pm

It doesn’t mean they don’t have faith in Hughes, it means they don’t think he is ready. Big difference.

  95. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Jersey — Giambi is clearly on the decline, though. Not only that, but with he and Damon both in the lineup, the Yankees have awful defense in RF, CF, and 1B. Perhaps the worst defense in the league at those 3 positions.

  96. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:49 pm

True, it’s hardly certain that CC will want to sign here. After the way he has dominated NL lineups since being traded, I imagine it might be pretty hard to voluntarily walk away from that. Plus, he can hit, and he likes hitting. The bright side is that the Dodgers reportedly are having lots of cash flow problems lately, so they may not be able to afford him, and we know Milwaukee can’t. So then where else would he go? SF? SD? Don’t see either one.

  97. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:50 pm

They don’t think Hughes is ready now but he was ready last yr and after spring training? What about all the glowing reports from his rehab starts??

    It’s pretty suspect.

Even if he’s not “ready” isn’t he a better option at this point and more important long term than the Raja?

If they don’t think his stuff is ready or right shouldn’t they have realized this last November and added another arm so Hughes could have a full yr at AAA and made them force his way onto the team?

  98. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:51 pm

There’s no question Giambi is on the bad side of good. But at the moment if you are trying to win games with the best O you can put out there who’s best for the lineup?

Not much of an argument especially since they won’t quit nor should they.

  99. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:53 pm

“Not much of an argument especially since they won’t quit”

    One could argue this point.

  100. brettisgod August 22nd, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I just can not believe these words are comin out of my mouth but send Brett down to Triple AAA. SERIOUSLY! At least he gets the respect there to play everyday. And if he goes down he will mpost certainly play center field everyday. THIS IS HORRIBLE! I feel lied to by Joe Giradi. He said thatBrett was here to play center field. Look I understand Johnny Damon is a goo hitter but his defense looses games. Its time he figures out who he likes more. Johnny Or Matsui. Besides Matsui should not of been plauing every day. Sorry for my rant but this is disrespectfull for brett who came up and expected to play everyday.

  101. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:53 pm

You are going to see teams you never thought you would see in on Sabathia.

Aces don’t hit the open market anymore especially lefty aces.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Angels got in on him. Moreno loves big time players and they got the money. Mariners have tons of money. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Giants go for it even after being burnt on Zito. Lincecum, Cain, CC is wow.

  102. Jersey August 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Even though they play like they quit weeks ago, I don’t think you will see a white flag waved anytime soon.

All it takes is a 6 game win streak to get right back in it.

    Not unheard of.

  103. retroclutch August 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pm

    @Jersey 5:46
Is it really “tough” to call a guy hitting .184/.384/.429 in the month of August a weak bat?
Is it really “tough” to call a guy hitting .225/.376/.413 after the all-star break a weak bat?

In the same month of August Gardner is hitting .333/.375/.533. It’s a small sample size but at least he provides consistent solid defense in CF. Damon’s defense has already lost us 1 game and contributed to last night.

Since we all love RISP stats. Garnder is hitting .500 with runners on and 2 out, .400 with RISP and 1.000 with the bases loaded. He provides more to this team than Giambi does right now.

  104. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pm

“All it takes is a 6 game win streak to get right back in it.”

Maybe, but you’ll need wins from Ponson, Rasner, and Pavano to get you to six. Long odds to say the least.

  105. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 5:58 pm

“the Yankees have awful defense in RF, CF, and 1B. Perhaps the worst defense in the league at those 3 positions”

And it’s especially laughable when your roster actually includes superior defenders at both of the 1st two positions, only they’re in LF and on the bench respectively. Hell, Nady would also probably be better in center or at 1b than Damon (who belongs in left) and Giambi (who belongs on the bench).

  106. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

“If they don’t think his stuff is ready or right shouldn’t they have realized this last November and added another arm so Hughes could have a full yr at AAA and made them force his way onto the team?”

Yeah, they probably should have realized then that he wasn’t yet ready. Cashman bought into his own hype. Just because he erred doesn’t make Hughes a bust though.

  107. DVAB ( GO CUBS ) August 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

brettisgod…YOU feel lied to ? YOU need to get a grip…go hang out with the other 16 year old girls and talk about the coolest guy at school and leave the adults to the big people talk, OK, honey ?

  108. AJ YANKS August 22nd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I’d re-sign Giambi to a short 2 yr/$33 million doller deal. I’d also sign Abreu to a 3 yr/$45 million doller with a team option for yr 4.

As far as the rotation goes I would like to see this rotation

    Wang
    Joba
    Hughes
    Kennedy
    Rasner/Ponson/Giese

You have the two aces at the top followed by Hughes in the middle, Kennedy and Rasner/Ponson to eat innings at the bottom. No more big money deals.

I’d also like to see this bullpen Rivera-Melancon-Veras-Edwar-Britton-Patterson-Scott Srickland/Stephen Jackson.

I think we have a shot to do some special things with that roster. We will be young in the rotation and plenty of seasoned veterans in the lineup who know how to hit in big spots.

  109. brettisgod August 22nd, 2008 at 6:02 pm

I agree with your points of view retro. These are two opposite players brett and jason. Jason is not good anymore and is old and slow. Brett is fast and young and stable.

  110. Matt - NYY fan in Boston August 22nd, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Traber and Robertson visited the hospital…to see wounded vets. Though it is a great cause, one would think that they would see the hospital for their own medical reasons.

  111. jennifer August 22nd, 2008 at 6:04 pm

  115. EDUB August 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 pm

AJ YANKS thank god you are not the GM. 2 year deal for 15 mill each for a pathetic DH who can only walk, K or homerun (rarely)? 3 more years to Abreu? Laughable

  116. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm

lol jennifer, I was just thinking, “man, it’s too bad this guy doesn’t work for the Red Sox.”

I do like his bullpen though, except the Stephen Jackson part. I would actually sign Toronto FA lefty Scott Downs if the price is reasonable. He’s a guy that you can insert into the 8th inning if Veras, or later, Melancon, struggle there, but he’s not a Gagne-type big name where it would be a red letter event if you took him out of that role. Plus he knows the AL East and seems much more versatile than Marte.

  117. SJ44 August 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm

    Jennifer,

Agreed on both counts. Classy of all 4 guys to do what they did.

Regardless of on-field performance, it’s nice to read about players doing the right thing.

  118. EDUB August 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm

And don’t even get me started on 4 young starters including IPK and Rasner? LOL

  119. dan l August 22nd, 2008 at 6:17 pm

SJ, How would Jeter react if they asked him to move to the outfield for next season? If he would I could see the Yankees making trade for JJ Hardy of the Brewers who have Escobar ready to take over as their SS.

  120. Justin C. August 22nd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

im glad the 1st priority is winning and not bringing little leaguers to the ball field

    sigh

  121. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 6:19 pm

AJ — your proposal will leave the Yankees with about 72 wins next year. I think we should be a tad more ambitious.

  122. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Right, cause I’m sure Bobby wouldn’t have given a thought to the Venezualan little leaguers if the Yankees were 20 games over .500.

    sigh, indeed.

  127. Aish August 22nd, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    SJ44,

I’ve never posted before, but I read all the posts, and I respect your opinions, so I wanted to ask you something regarding Hughes and Kennedy. Do you think either one will be sent to play winter ball during the offseason/do you think it’s even being considered? I don’t know much at all about how winter leagues work, but seeing as how neither has enough innings under his belt to compete unrestricted at the ML level next year, as well as how both have a lot to work on mechanics-wise, I don’t see how having them play during the offseason could be a bad thing (except for the possibility of injury, but that’s always there). It would allow them to continue their work from this season while building strength for the next. I believe Kennedy pitched in the Hawaii League already; I don’t know about Hughes. Do you see this as a viable option? Or do you feel it’s just better to let them develop at AAA next year?

  128. Steve August 22nd, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Why do we continue to reward Giambi’s horrific performance this season by continuing to bat him fifth in the lineup? Not only does it kill our offense, but it says that this team won’t hold you accountable if you perform at a sub-par level.

If you ask me, Nady has done far more to earn that important spot. Let him cleanup after Arod. Giambi should be benched, or hitting right above the catcher’s spot.

  129. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Johnny, Bobby, Billy and Dave are awesome.

And I can’t express how amazing it is that Johnny is doing what he is doing with the Wounded Warrior project.

I know former marines that won’t set foot inside Walter Reed…

  130. Joe Monte August 22nd, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Aish – You bring up a valid point about winter league, probably a good idea for Hughes b/c he hasn’t yielded many innings during 2007 and 2008.

  131. Travis August 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Pete, thanks for bringing us the inside stuff, such as the news about the four good guys doing their good deeds today. I appreciate the insight you always provide!

I think Johnny goes to Walter Reed just about every time the Yankees are in Baltimore. Or if he doesn’t go, other guys from the team do. He is a super person.

  134. Justin C. August 22nd, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    thanks for the award pete

  135. Joe Monte August 22nd, 2008 at 6:42 pm

AJ YANKS – Why would the Yankees resign Giambi? Is this sarcasm? In addition to Giambi, we might as well sign / trade for Nomar, some other players who are DH’s playing the field to have the best DH All-Star & past their prime team.

  136. Betsy August 22nd, 2008 at 6:43 pm

SJ, this is in response to your posts in an earlier thread.

First, I think you are too negative on Hughes, but that’s just my opinion of course. He doesn’t have an out pitch? He doesn’t have good secondary pitches? Sounds like a non-prospect to me if we go by your scouting reports. Also, your scout friends may have thought Phil didn’t look good in his starts prior to last Sundays, but he basically has gotten mostly raves from people who have seen him. So, what we really have here is a difference of opinion. You are making it sound like a fact that Phil has looked mediocre when it’s not. Also, you almost completely discredit Phil’s September and October performance yet trash his performance earlier this year when, IMO, he was feeling the effects of his rib injury even before he went on the DL. You know I respect your opinion a great deal, so I admit I’m surprised at your negativity.

Also, while I think you bring up some interesting points as to how the Yankees can rectify what was a terrible season in all regards, I find that practically gutting the front office and/or doing a complete overhaul is an severe overreaction to one bad year.

  137. LLIME August 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Never use September numbers or one relief appearance in October to gauge a pitcher’s value, good or bad. Kennedy had even better September numbers, do we use that to hype Ian as well?

  138. Justin C. August 22nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

  140. Showalter '09 August 22nd, 2008 at 6:56 pm

AJ – Please tell me that was a joke.

If this franchise applies the Hughes/Kennedy experiment again, we are so screwed. Those who do not learn from mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

And you actually want to re-sign Giambi?

I would hope Hal wants to win next year, not re-live the 80s with redundant mediocrity and re-enactment of the glory days.

  141. Justin C. August 22nd, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Justin C., or Debbie Downer, these players are professionals so a little time away from BP won’t make a difference. It might give the players more of a perspective on how special they are to be where they are in life here in the US versus the conditions people live through everyday in Venezuela

Oh yeah, and good for Bobby, Johnny, Billy, and Dave. Wish more stars/celebs would be as generous.

  155. S.A.-Can the Yanks win a series? Please? This offense is still offensive. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Oh look! A run thingie. Nice

  156. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

    nice clutch hitting theor arod.

  157. Bombshell August 22nd, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Hahaha way to keep the line moving Clutch-Rod…what a bum.

  158. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:14 pm

    2500!!! Congrats Cap’n!!!

It’ll be a sweeter memory that the hit helped get a run in, even better if he scores and huge bonus if they win!

  159. nyyankfanken August 22nd, 2008 at 7:14 pm

    GO AROD! Haha

  160. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Oh look, A-Rod delivers in the “cluth” again. What a joke…

  161. A-Rod Urgency = K's and Double Plays August 22nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Has A-Rod completely shut it down?

  162. Begee August 22nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

and he’s getting $30 mil for hitting into double plays…
we could’ve sign 3 players at 10 mil each and get more production out of them than arod…

  163. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

nice job arod and giambi. now why are they batting 4-5?

  164. Matt - NYY fan in Boston August 22nd, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Jason Giambi right now is like Wilson Betemit now, but worse.

  165. Begee August 22nd, 2008 at 7:16 pm

and he’s the $21 mil cheat we paid for getting strike out when we have people on base

  166. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

lol at me thinking Jeter would score with A-Rod and Giambi at bat. Mr. death grip on the bat w/RISP and the worst no. 5 hitter in baseball themselves. Ha.

  167. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Giambi. I know I’m not the only one counting down the days till we don’t have to see him in a Yankee uniform again.

  168. Fredo Corleone August 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 pm

1st three reach and they score once. That’s soooo the ’08 Yankees. ):

  169. sw August 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 pm

    Ugh, A-Rod and Jason.

  170. stuart August 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 pm

I mean you cannot make this crap up.. all the people that want to move giambi in the order how about arod??

god this guys are so bad how can anyone defend them.. our 4th and 5th hitters cannot hit with men on base, that iS a PROBLEM…

I am so sick of Arod and we only have 9 more years of seeing his mug, yech….Can’t he just retire and go away..

  171. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 7:19 pm

No, Katie, I’m with you. However, we’re stuck with A-Rod the Abomination for nearly another decade. This inning should have been a blow-out. Pathetic!

  172. Fredo Corleone August 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Little Dustmite goes yard for Boston. 1-0 with the Jays coming to bat.

  173. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Agreed. If your paying a man that much money and he can’t get it done, put someone in his spot that can.

  174. Begee August 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 pm

yea.. when he did us a service by opting out.. and what did hank/hal do? sign him up for an even bigger contract and homerun bonus…

  175. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I know most people will hate me for saying this, but at least Joe Torre had the balls to drop people in the lineup for not producing…

  176. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Remember this time last year when Moose would go a whole outing only missing 1 or 2 bats? Now he is getting hitters as tough as Markakis swinging like it’s nothing. Talk about a turnaround, it’s been great to watch.

  177. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I think it’s fair to say that during most games, you only get one or two chances to bust a game open. When A-Rod and Giambi are batting in the middle of a rally, it’s done, because the mere sight of teammates on base makes them soil their Depends.

  178. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    pathetic effort by cano.

  179. AY August 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

I’m sure this has been discussed, but I just got here. Sweet Lord in heaven, someone tell Girardi to flip-flop Giambi and Matsui. I assume he was batting Giambi behing A-Rod for the righty/lefty thing. ARGH.

  180. Matt - NYY fan in Boston August 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Cano is just horrible at fielding, just awful.

  181. Walk Millar! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Why do I sense a HR coming?

  182. A-Rod Urgency = K's and Double Plays August 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Mussina should publicly embarrass Cano at the end of the inning right on the field. Too many half ass efforts.

  183. DFox August 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

That ball was in the infield forever, how can he not get a glove on that?

  184. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

also arod is just terrible when it comes to going to his left.

  185. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Okay, the Yankees need to hire Cano’s dad to knock some sense into him 24/7. Think about it, he will actually start hitting, and maybe play defense!

  186. sw August 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

    Wow the Yankees suck.

  187. PBL August 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

  188. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

This is BS. Why can’t Mike Mussina ever get decent fielding behind him when it matters most? Ridiculous.

  189. Rishi August 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

too much going on after 2 outs…just not good

  190. Bronx Jeers August 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

  192. A-Rod Urgency = K's and Double Plays August 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Cano showed great range there. Dont know about the rest of you but im f-ing impressed with that 3rd out.

They can’t even beat a gal named Liz.

  194. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

  195. pete August 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

I can’t wait to see Kevin Millar’s reaction when edwar strikes him out!!

  196. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm

This is the story of the Yankees. Easy infield plays leading to runs because of the lazy/ lack of defense.

  197. sw August 22nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm

AT least Mussina got out of the first, unlike in May.

  198. Rob NY August 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

It’s funny, according to the pretty good Baltimore guys calling the game the Yankees have the best fielding percentage in the AL.

  199. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

We really should’ve picked up Byrd. He’s been great for the Sox.

  200. Katie August 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Plus the lack of hitting, I mean, it’s just absurd

  201. GreenBeret7 August 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Christ, you people are pathetic. It’s the first inning. Huff is a left handed pull hitter and you want Cano playing up the middle for a right handed pull hitter. Try bitching about something that deserves it.

  202. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

  204. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

it looks like we are facing cy liz now.

  205. A-Rod Urgency = K's and Double Plays August 22nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

a-rod can hit with bases empty, so bat him first. live on the edge. take chances. alex’s own words.

  206. ZMAN7777 August 22nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Oh, and Liz has issued 32 walks in 48 innings. A real Cy Young threat.

  207. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    Put Mussina on waivers.
Tell him after tonights game that you’ll only trade him to an AL contender, to give him a chance for his first 20 game win season, and that you’ll be calling for his services as a FA.
Explain to him, that the current Yankee team, plus the expanded rosters in September, are going to make it very unlikely that he’ll have any support behind him when he pitches. Much like tonight!!!!

  208. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

“It’s funny, according to the pretty good Baltimore guys calling the game the Yankees have the best fielding percentage in the AL.”

We’re tied with the Jays for 1st in the AL.

  209. Guiseppe Franco August 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    Hmmmm.

I’m going to stay in the Cano-for-Matt Kemp camp after watching efforts like that for the Yanks’ beloved second baseman.

I’m not a believer in the “he’s a future All-Star, gold glover, batting champ….blah, blah, blah” argument anymore.

The guy doesn’t come to play everyday and that’s the bottom line. I’d rather see something out there with less talent and giving it his all 100% of the time.

  210. up w/Joba, down w/Joba August 22nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

We have to do something to make sure that we get rid of A-Rod.
    The cancer must be excised.

  211. GreenBeret7 August 22nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

So, now Rodriguez has 77 home runs, now? News to the baseball world.

  212. Scott August 22nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

I’m beginning to believe that Cano is in the process of playing himself off the team in a winter deal.
He’s got about as much for brains and effort as a bag of hammers.

  218. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Best Fielding Percentage, and not being able to throw a baserunner out from short CF are two different things!!

It’s however true, that we have the best fielding %, which means that we haven’t either gotten to balls we should have, or not received errors on makeable plays.

  219. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm

well that was just a bad swing there. :(

  220. pat August 22nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Kay keeps talking about how it’s tough to figure why the Yankees scored 950 runs last year but can’t this year. A-Rod and Jorge were insane last year and this year Matsui and Posada (who chipped in just short of 200 last year) have been gone for most of the year.

Not tough to figure to me.

  221. ken August 22nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Should Cano have gotten that ball? At least kept it in the infield? Seems like Mussina thought so.

  222. A-Rod Urgency = K's and Double Plays August 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

I think pitchers love pitching against the yankees now.

  223. Matt - NYY fan in Boston August 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

  231. Rishi August 22nd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Hey, trisha :) I have faith, but I’m pragmatic – just don’t need to get embarrassed out there.

If what you need is a goal, then how about supporting Moose to a 20-win season and potential HOF. Seems worthy to me…

  232. Mark (Brett is back) August 22nd, 2008 at 7:45 pm

At least we are not throwing Hughes tomorrow. He is at

    2ip 5 hits 4er 0 walks 3k’s and 50 pitches.

  233. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

    up w/Joba -

I was asked to put that in my tagline by another Yankee faithful here. So I did. For a little Arod started hitting. Then he stopped. I thought maybe my having it there was acting like a reverse mojo. So I took it out. Then one of the other Yankee fan posters told me he noticed I took it out. So I put it back in. Now you’re telling me to take it out. I feel like a flippin ping pong ball.

If I take it out it is NOT because I am not supportive of Arod, because as long as he wears the pinstripes I root for him. But I am willing to take it out since it wasn’t my idea originally to put it in.

    Okay?

  234. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Mussina looks like a little leaguer out there. Can we move the mound to 45′ away from the plate?

  235. j August 22nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm

moose is throwing just fastballs and very few curves.

  236. Yankee Trader August 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm

    Matt-

To get a draft pick/picks for your own FA, he has to sign with another team before 12/02/08, or be offered arbitration and decline it.

Moose will never get to twenty wins this year with the current team and the likely call-ups playing in September, and it’s a shame to not support him with a good effort in the field and at bat.

  237. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Rish, that is an extremely worthy goal. I defininitely want Moose to get to 20. Lord knows he deserves it.

My other goal will remain hoping that the Yanks make it to the postseason. It may feel like a long shot but it’s not impossible. As long as they still have a chance, it’s a goal I will continue to support.

    :)

  238. Guiseppe Franco August 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm

I’ve come to feel less strongly against trading Cano than I did before, and I like Matt Kemp, but doesn’t he also have the same knock against him? That he has mental lapses in the field, etc?

True, but a change of scenery would do him some good and he’s got far more upside than Cano.

    He’s two years younger, too.

  239. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm

For anyone and everyone who wants Arod disappeared (and I will be honest in saying that I was a huge proponent of that very thing his second (?) season with the Yanks – well one of the first seasons -) I have to say that I absolutely and unequivocally don’t believe we will see that happen.

That said, I see no point in rooting for that or rooting against him. I’d rather root for him to do well.

    Just my opinion.

  240. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

  241. Doreen August 22nd, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Just to show how no one is ever satisfied, I was listening to XM this afternoon in the car, and there was a caller who was an Angels fan who was actually complaining about the Angels because their team BA isn’t high enough compared to the 2002 Angels. Hello? Your team is guaranteed a playoff spot and has either the best or second best record in at least the AL, and you’re complaining? Sheesh.

“True, but a change of scenery would do him some good and he’s got far more upside than Cano.

Cano is a 2b. That is far more upside. Plus, hes already been an all star and had 3 productive years. Cano is already there. Kemp may never get there. And you can find OF’s.

When did Kay and Pete become Jeter fans after trashing Jeter and he’s GIDP’s all year?

I really do want Mussina to get 20 wins, many people say it is the only way he will get to the HOF (aside from 300 career wins which still may seem unlikely at this point). If we trade him in a waiver deal we have to get some value in return.

So I hope that was an attempt at humor!!!

all you need to look at is the AB’s with RISP for the 2 teams.. the orioles have more runs scored then the yanks with no SS production at all..

Mora and huff are better then abreu and arod can you imagine that????

Liz with a 7 ERA holding his own against our all star lineup.. pathetic… this team is so hard to watch…

yeah the abreu running on his own has to stop, he should only run when Griardi gives him the OK..This guys are just morons and cannot adjust, do they look at film or look at there stats???

At least if Gardner or another young guy plays I get to see something different but the same old bad stuff is old……..

So we are dealing with a double-edge sword and unfortunately the choice is to go with the hottest hitter. You can at least understand why it’s being done, even though you don’t like it.

If you look at the remaining schedules of the potential wild cards-Boston, Tampa, Minnesota and Chicago, Minnesota after they play 3 against the Angels this weekend, have the easiest remaining schedule, followed by the White Sox. Boston might just have to win the division to get in.

  295. Trevor August 22nd, 2008 at 8:17 pm

  296. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Don’t say these guys don’t care about winning. They are doing everything in their power to manufacture runs and in the process they are making outs. But that’s because they are desperate and pressing.

  297. j August 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm

  313. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Trisha – I know, but Brett was hitting, even his outs were hit hard all weekend before he got benched, and its not like they have been scoring many runs without him and with all the big names in the lineup either. But they have been giving up many runs on defense w/Damon in CF! In fact, it seems like it’s cost them more runs defensively than it has yielded offensively.

  314. Guiseppe Franco August 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Cano is a 2b. That is far more upside. Plus, hes already been an all star and had 3 productive years. Cano is already there. Kemp may never get there. And you can find OF’s.

No, not exactly. They are going to have to replace three outfielders over the next two seasons (Abreu, Matsui, and Damon) and the market for outfielders suck right now.

It would be wise to make a move for one of those outfielders this offseason and another next offseason instead of being forced to get more than one after 2009 with a terrible market.

Regardless of position, Kemp has far more upside than Cano. It’s really not even close. More power, more speed, and more tools.

I’d take my chances with Kemp after watching Cano the last couple of years.

  315. Trevor August 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Think about it, Giambi does nothing well. Can’t run, can’t hit other then the occasional HR, can’t throw, can’t defend his position…….but he’s making 24 million? What a horrible contract.

  316. Brian August 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    FYI:

Phil Hughes is getting lit up again in Triple-A. Five runs in three innings so far. Once again throwing his blistering 91 mph fastball. Im not sure what to make of it. I know hes still so young but that 91 is so so average.

Oh, and as for Giambi….what is there even left to say now? The guy has become a joke. I don’t know WHY the Yankees continue to test Markakis’ arm way more often than they should in general, but I bet Giambi in particular doesn’t even listen to scouting on the matter. He’s old, stubborn and one-dimensional. It’s been said countless times before, but even though he may be a good guy, having him off the team will be like having a 1,000 lb weight off your shoulders.

  322. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm

BBB – I absolutely understand what you are saying but I just don’t think Girardi is going to take the chance of sitting his hottest hitter with the offense struggling the way it is to score runs. If our offense was knocking the tar off the ball, I think you would see it play out differently. It definitely is a terrible choice to have to make, no question.

  329. Trevor August 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Other then a few players (Arod,Jeter,Mo,Posada etc…guys like that) everyone should either be let go as FA or explore the trade market. This team needs to be dismantled. I don’t know about fully rebuilding but it wouldn’t hurt to seriously think about it.

Kemp does have much more power and speed than Cano. I have my reservations about him too though, and they’re the same kinds of reservations that exist about Cano, so in that regard, it almost seems counterproductive to trade one for the other.

However, it would be a lot easier to fill a hole at 2b through FA (with Hudson or Ellis) this winter than it would to find an OF at or above Kemp’s level next winter. The FA pool is getting weaker and weaker every year, it is just by luck that 2 decent 2b’s are available this offseason.

I agree, but Kent’s tenure with LA is coming to an end and they do have a lot of outfielders with Ramirez (if he signs with them), Ethier, Andruw (lol), Pierre, etc.

  363. BBB says let Brett play! August 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 pm

kinda soon for a new pitcher, no?

  367. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm

I can’t agree that the Pudge trade was useless. The Pudge trade was necessary in the minds of the Yankees since Jorge was down and they wanted to make it to the postseason. Molina, who incidentally is the best trade we’ve ever made, has always been a back-up catcher and was not going to be able to handle the pressure of doing all the catching. Cripes people here were ragging on the guy when he stopped hitting! Like the job of your damned catcher is to hit anyway. That’s a BONUS with catchers.

So the Yankees went out and got an HOF catcher. They obviously felt that the tandem of Pudge and Molina was going to be superior to Molina and Moeller, especially in the postseason – something they were hoping for!

Pudge has actually done a very good job with two of the five pitchers.

Y’all know that Kyle was my boy. But I couldn’t pretend that I didn’t understand why they did what they did. I still say it was the proper move.

    Please bat Arod second

I`d rather have Hughes (2 years struggling with injuries and strugling at AAA) and IPK, cocky pitcher with no credentials to back it up, and lets not forget Melky, the other untouchable in that potential trade, who is now tearing up AAA
    That helps us now

  390. Frank August 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm

If the Yankees aren’t careful, and if their prospects keep turning out like Hughes, even the Orioles will pass them in the AL East.

They have a lot of young position players and good pitching prospects coming on. Not the least of which is Liz. His lack of command is the only thing standing in his way from the majors, which is not uncommon in young pitchers.

The O’s also got the best pitcher in the draft this year, Matusz.

  391. Rob NY August 22nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Hey Mel I am on the Colt Brennan bandwagon. I personally think he can give Carter a run for his money in Washington by next year’s camp. He has looked good in the pre-season games i’ve seen.

  392. GIAMBI NEEDS TO BAT 8th or 9th, WAKE UP GIRARDI ! August 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Many teams have at least one or tow solid everyday playing rookies or pitchers. Yankees tell everyone how great the prospects are and he we are at the end of the season and I havent seen anything.

  396. mel-go, go, Waipio! August 22nd, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Alex plays by the 5 run rule. Yankees up by 5 runs or down by 5 runs he will get a big hit. Any other time the slelections are:
    K
    GIDP
Pop up (not deep enough to advance the runner)
    swining bunt

  408. Rishi August 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm

FYI – I hate Kevin Millar

  409. Frank August 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Santana wouldn’t have made a bit of difference this season the way the rest of the team is playing. Don’t kid yourself.

And we’d be out a couple of pitchers who figure into our long term plans. Think about in three or four years, Kennedy and Hughes will hopefully have figured it out and come close to reaching their ceilings, again hopefully.

So we’d be stuck paying an obscene amount for a pitcher who was no longer the #1 we traded for heading a rotation of other young pitchers who would most likely be struggling the same way Hughes and Kennedy are.

Not trading for Santana kept this team flexible for years to come. It was the right long term move. Enough is enough.

  410. Doreen August 22nd, 2008 at 9:07 pm

One-half step away from a second great catch. Anyone else think Bobby was gonna get lost back there on the first catch? Didn’t look like he was coming out of there.

  417. Frank August 22nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Millar is such a joke. He would give anything to play for the Red Sox. He’s said how bad he wants to go back there and all the does is relish the times when he played there. And everytime the Yankees come to town he somehow thinks he’s still important and thinks every game is the 2004 ALCS.

  427. Frank August 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Phantom tag by Cano. He’s lucky he didn’t get called on that nonsense. You see that crap from him all the time. He’s so cocky and just expects the ump to give him the call.

Exactly like a few games ago when he missed the 2nd base bag on a routine DP. Tried to sell it like he touched the bag but took his foot off WAY to early. The ump had to call it.

  428. sw August 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm

  429. JR Yankees August 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm

  449. Jim S August 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I think any manager couldn’t manage this mess, but Girardi has been pretty awful. I hate to say this, but he and Cashman need to go. But there is nothing that I can think of to replace them. It looks pretty bleak.

  450. stuart August 22nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm

8 back to backs for the year.. I bet they had 15 last year.

What are we with RISP tonight.. Nothing changes.. Abreu also should have caught Millars ball these announcers are blind, ABreu runs 1/2 ass.. Damon has no range to play Cf, he must play LF next year if he is back.

How many games have we scored 3 runs or less in? We may be adding to it again..

The offense just is finding new lows almost on a daily basis.. They all need lobotomies.. They are pathetic.

Moose is one of the few things worth watching this team for.. The good news is next year we will have many many new faces….

Hughes’ complete line for tonight against Lehigh Valley…the same team that beat him last time out on Sunday.

    3.1 10 8 8 1 6 – 86/60 strikes – 2GO/2FO – 3 2B hits, 1 HR, 1 HBP

Needless to say it was a good idea to keep him in Scranton for this start. The good news is he is still throwing a ton of strikes.

The bad news, besides the obvious results, is he threw less pitches than last time out, didn’t complete as many innings (3.1 instead of 3.2), and somebody previously posted that Hughes was only throwing around 90-91mph.

It goes to show you how selfish a player is when he wont change his approach despite the fact that there are holes all over the field and a grounder to first gets the job done, but The Little G takes his uppercut homerun cut and flies out… to the short stop. So the wild pitch does what Giambi should have atleast taken care of…scored a run and moved another runner to 3B.

No wonder he is batting 5th…see Girardi knows what he’s doing.

  504. Mark (Brett is back) August 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm

    Of course the X-MAN delivers.

No he didn’t. It was after he didn’t get voted on (probably by people who thought he sucked) that he sucked. :-P

Can we order a few more X-Men type ballplayers ????

  513. Brandon ( WOO HOO PAVANO PITCHES ON SAT, LIQUOR NIGHT FOR ME) August 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Alex misses a HR by that much but why did he get the hit because he softened up his grip on that bat, Giambiis swinging like Dustin Pedroia when he was first called up. :? And there’s X just does what he needs to do. He softens his hands and lets his body drive the ball.

WHY DOES THIS MAN NEED PROTECTION !!!!

  514. Drew August 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Classic Beavis! Need some TP for your…..

I`d put Gardner in CF and put Damon at first- or put Nady at first and put Damon in LF

    Trisha…so far Melky is 0-4 with a K.

    1 Groundout to 1B.
    2 Flyout to LF.

All together he has seen 22 pitches and 5 LOB.

Jays just blew a good opportunity to score. 2 runners on, Vernon Wells up. Timlin pitching. Nada la dida.

Still 6-4, top of the 8th. Soon the river dancing fruitcake will tap his way out the mound and try to frighten all the women and little children with his fish-mouth glare.

91 – 93 mph topped out at 93 mph according to Jennings, he’s going through the dead arm period. I still don’t know how a SP like him would go through a dead arm period but that seems to be the indications.

Here in Toronto the floodgates are opening up as the Red Sox take an 8-4 lead. One thing I will give Yankee fans they are first class compared to these scumbags from Boston. They are the most disrespectful people I have ever met. You clap and cheer for your team, but to go to another ballpark and gloat?

We need four runs of MDC because it is not going to happen against Papelbon.

  556. Tom K August 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm

    Arod fan president -

All pitchers go through dead arm periods. And, since Hughes is pretty much in spring training mode right now, it makes sense that his arm would tire a bit at this point in time. It’s not really surprising, and age has nothing to do with it.

  557. Scott August 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm

  570. Betsy August 22nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm

91-93? Wow, I’m hoping he’s still got that dead arm. Otherwise, I don’t know what to say. Phil has completely regressed and his velocity has dropped precipitously. It’s scary that he’s getting pounded in AAA. What has happened to this kid? You guys all know that I have kept the faith, but at this point, I have to ask what is wrong? Did Phil just lose his talent? Is that even possible? From what I know of him, his command is nothing like it was before he was called up last year. Phil seemed to have it all – and it’s all just disappeared. Again, he can’t even get AAA hitters out. This is sad, especially because he’s such a good kid. I’m depressed right now……

You can only hope they dont give him 10 million and expect him to play first base. He is a fun enough guy to root for because I like his personality but if you all sign him next year youll get some homers and some walks and you can just be glad you didn’t sign on for the 23m a year package!

  577. Angel August 22nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm

I would tend to give that line of thought some credibility (and a lot of people subscribe to it) if it wasnt for the fact that so many independent prospect ranking sources had him as one of the 2 best pitching prospects in the game. That kind of talent doesn’t just go away and it also doesn’t get reported just because the Yankees tell everybody he is the next Roger Clemens. He has been handled wrong, gotten hurt and altered mechanics as a result. That I think is the truth of the matter.

How sweet is that? Michael Kay was going on about the chance you take by having Ransome pinch run for Giambi (or whatever he did) and how it takes his bat away.

I was kind of thinking to myself that it isn’t like we would be expecting Giambi to scorch the ball!

I notice on this board that people keep saying “why didn’t the Yankees trade for Santana”?

Someone should point out to these people that the Twins traded Santana and they have a better record.

Papelbon is in with a 4 run (non-save situation) lead. I hope we take a lot of pitches so he is unavailable for the rest of the series.

  635. Angel August 22nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm

“We didn’t give up Tabata for Marte, Marte was a throw in. The MAIN guy we were getting was X-man.”

I don’t know about that, Cashman had had his eye on Marte for while – so did a lot of teams. He’s hardly a scrub.

Yeah he’s had some bad outings, mostly when he’s sometimes (due to necessity of the game situation) been left in too long. I think he’s a decent pitcher who will be able to help the Yankees next year too.

Ransom uses Arod’s swing better than Arod. Seriously relaxed hands and drives the ball. Hopefully he can keep up the hot streak. Giambi should be ashamed of himself.

  640. Angel August 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

“But last night was an all-out cursing festival that I haven’t seen since a college football game. And all from fans of a team who hasn’t sniffed first place in two decades.”

Agreed. It was pretty lame, Frank.

  641. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

JB – the Santana cadre is the vast minority.

“We didn’t give up Tabata for Marte, Marte was a throw in. The MAIN guy we were getting was X-man. And, also, Tabata may NEVER be anything”

Actually I believe it was Nady AND Marte the Yanks were interested in because they wanted a left handed presence in the pen and were high on Marte. By the way, I can see why. Girardi overworked him for a while (compared to what he was used to pitching) and it showed. But when he is pitching a normal schedule, the guy is very good.

  642. Jose August 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Marte has shown he can get the best lefties out in big spots. Thats all we need him to do. We have plenty of other guys like Melancon, Sanchez, Veras, Edwar, Bruney etc. who can pitch to righties in the 8th.

Use Marte as the lefty specialist (or a full inning if a righty is sandwhiched between 2 lefties), and he will be a force.

Relievers are so year to year anyway, so I would bet Marte does well when he re-familiarizes himself with the AL.

  643. Jeff NJ: Let Joba Play! August 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I do love the irony of Kay saying how the Yankees took a chance on offense bringing in Ransom. Giambi has no offensive game. I guess it’s probably the fact that Bal either A has a crappy pen or B has no book on Ransom, but to be 2-2 with 2 HR’s is ridiculous. Good for him, good for us.

  644. JB (Blue Jays Fan) August 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

    Frank:

Everyone needs to slow down and look up Cody Ransom’s career minor league numbers before they start falling in love with him.

Notice how he’s never been close to even an upper .250 AVG.

He’s providing a nice spark, and I love that. But he won’t even be on the bench for long.

What I’m concerned about now is not whether he’s an ace, a #2, 3 or 5, but the fact that right now he has absolutely regressed and doesn’t look like a major league pitcher, period. You just don’t wake up one day and lose your talent, stuff and command; it just doesn’t work that way. Something has gone terribly wrong with Phil and the Yankees have to fix it. He needs to be remade, possibly an overhaul needs to be done. Send him down to A ball and start completely over with him. The talent is there – it just doesn’t evaporate overnight- and it’s up to the Yankees (and Phil, but he’s a hard worker and I don’t worry about him in that way) to bring it out of him.

  672. Frank August 22nd, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Just ballparking it, but if you want me to count out the years I’d be more than happy to.

My point is simple. The Jays blew out the Yankees. So have your fun. That’s expected. But keep it reasonable. You’re not the Red Sox or Mets. There were a lot of kids at that game and in my opinion there was too much hatred circulating the ballpark of a team that’s been nowhere close to competing. It wasn’t just a few incidents. It was all game. Constantly.

That’s just the way it is. I didn’t make it that way.

  690. G. Love August 22nd, 2008 at 10:38 pm

If Girardi keeps trotting the bloated corpse of Giambi out in the starting lineup this season, he does not want to win.

You could spout OPS to me all day and night, but he has options for 1b that do not include the giant ball of goo with a stache.

By the way, did anyone notice that Giambi wasn’t on the bench when Ransom and X went back to back? Guess he was in the clubhouse doing something more important.

SJ had it right — Giambi is a me guy and he’s playing like a me guy trying to hit homers to pad his stats.

I’d release him now, pay the buyout and bring up Miranda and platoon him with Ransom.

Can’t be worse the old wooden Indian we are currently calling our 1b.

  691. Matt August 22nd, 2008 at 10:38 pm

  700. G. Love August 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Seriously, why are we showing Giambi any respect? His contract has been an albatross, he’s not producing, he’s awful in the field….why is this organization showing a guy who should not be here next season this kind of respect and deference?

Waive him. Bench him. Let him go to the Angels or someone else . Who cares.

We’ll win more games with X batting 5 and Matsui 6 the rest of the year.

And at least Ransom can catch up to a major league fastball. Giambi only hits 88mph fastballs out.

  701. Dave D August 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Betsy – the Yankees rushed Hughes in the first place. Then he lost 80% of two different seasons in his development due to injury. And in the past year, they have toyed with him– i.e new mechanics, teaching him the cutter, telling him to get more GBs and less Ks etc.

Basically, he has not progressed at all in 2 years. Infact, he has regressed from the pitcher he was in Trenton who got tons groundballs and tons of strikeouts and possessed impeccable command.

They toyed with him too much and realized he may be messed up and it appears now they are trying to “salvage” what they can of him and now don’t care about his ceiling but just to get him to the point where he can pitch in the majors. He looks like a shell of what he was in Trenton.

This team canm piss you off I mean really piss you off.

Arod and his hard hands..it’s like he wants to tell the bat “I’m stronger than you !” and all he does is cheats away his power stroke like that, my god if this man when he seduces a woman to his room handles her in the sheets like he handles a bat the woman would be placed on the 15 DL immediately the day after every time.

  703. Matt August 22nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm

“if Blue Jays right-hander A.J. Burnett opts out of his contract, the Cardinals, Nationals and Orioles all will be on his wish list, just as they were when he was a free agent after the 2005 season. Burnett, 31, is likely to re-enter the market — he’s 7-1 with a 2.89 ERA in his last eight starts, and his 13-strikeout, one-walk victory over the Yankees on Tuesday ranked as one of the best performances of his career. The Jays, though, aren’t in a helpless position: They could make a pre-emptive bid to retain Burnett by increasing his $12 million salary in 2009 and ’10 each and/or extending his contract. Burnett is fond of Toronto, close with fellow right-hander Roy Halladay and a fan of manager Cito Gaston. But he will have other options despite his 4.51 ERA. Burnett hit it off with Cardinals manager Tony La Russa the last time he was a free agent and the Cardinals could have openings in their rotation if they lose Kyle Lohse and/or Braden Looper in free agency. The Orioles and Nationals appeal to Burnett because he makes his home in Monkton, Md. — his wife, Karen, is a Maryland native. In fact, Burnett’s contract entitles her to eight round-trip limousine trips per season between Monkton and Toronto. How all this will play out is anyone’s guess. The Orioles might not be ready to pursue a big-money starting pitcher in free agency and both the Jays and Nationals could hire new general managers after the season. One other thing: Burnett, like any self-respecting free agent, also would consider the New York teams, both of whom will pursue starting pitchers this offseason.”

Moose should just be glad he didn’t get a loss. He really had to battle out there. Hopefully Girardi will shuffle the rotation and let him pitch Wednesday against Byrd instead of Thursday against Lester, so he can get an extra start at the end of the season.

Arod and his hard hands..it’s like he wants to tell the bat “I’m stronger than you !” and all he does is cheats away his power stroke like that, my god if this man when he seduces a woman to his room handles her in the sheets like he handles a bat the woman would be placed on the 15 DL immediately the day after every time.”

Did they lose? Did ARod go 0/6 with 6 Ks? Am I missing something?

I’m talking about all year, really the thing I noticed tonight is in the 8th inning he didn’t squeeze the dust out of the bat and then there you had it a legit frozen rope. Actually 2.

    Dave D

It will be interesting to see who becomes an effective major league pitcher first, Hughes or Bucholtz?

  711. JB (Blue Jays Fan) August 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 pm

    I wish Rebecca!

You have to love those Rays, but I think that loving is going to get really tired in the next few years because they are going to get better. If they decide to add free agents to compliment the players coming up it could be a five year dynasty.

  712. hank hal August 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 pm

The Hughes saga is just a continuation of the miscalculations and incompetence that has pervaded this organization for the past 2 years. This is why SJ is 100% right and there needs to be some 3rd party evaluation.

The whiffs of Cole/Inoa and the overall regression of the farm system along with the problems of the major league team show that something is wrong somewhere. How could so much go wrong?

  713. AZ Four August 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Pudge did catch Pavano in the 03 WS, maybe they re-kindle that flame.

Hughes will be a great pitcher.

Don’t forget that Halladay was considered a “bust” in Toronto for his first two seasons. If you don’t want to wait that long, we will offer you some bullpen help.

  716. Patrick â„¢ August 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Ouch Hughes got bombed tonight, 8 runs in only 3.1 innings. He did have 6 K’s and only on walk. It sounds like he got pretty unlucky in the 2nd when he gave up 4 runs. This is why you don’t bring him up to the majors yet, he’s coming off a pretty significant injury. It will take him some time to get back into the swing of things. Leave him at AAA so he can get some innings and improve his changeup and cutter.

  717. jennifer August 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 pm

How did Mike do tonight? I see he didn’t get the win :(

  718. Brandon ( WOO HOO PAVANO PITCHES ON SAT, LIQUOR NIGHT FOR ME) August 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Miranda is definitely coming up soon this guy is becoming tough to pitch to.

  719. Dave D August 22nd, 2008 at 10:57 pm

ray – I think Buchholz probably will, just because his problems appear to be mental and learning how to work off his FB rather than his change up (even though it is very good).

Hughes on the other hand, has so many injury/mechanic issues he needs to sort out. Now he has glasses, he had a rib injury this year, hamstring and ankle injuries last yr and assorted injuries before 06. Basically, 06 was his only healthy season and it is pretty alarming considering Hughes was considered to have an ideal pitchers frame (6’5/230) and a clean bill of health. Now he has new mechanics, his command is gone, his movement is not there either and his velocity is probably down a tick or 2.

Buchholz’ stuff is still there, he still struck out almost a batter per inning at the ML level. He needs to work on locating his FB and he should be good to go. Maybe slight refinement to his secondary pitches, but most of his problems come from his FB command. Now, I haven’t watched all his starts but in the starts I did see, that appears to be the case.

Hughes has far more issues that he needs to sort out.

    Tue: Pettitte vs. Beckett
    Wed: Ponson vs. Byrd
    Thu: Mussina vs. Lester

    Predictions anybody?”

Hi Jr, I just read that posting.

I would guess that will be the probable pitchers for next week, assuming that Beckett is good to go. He threw some today and people said he felt good so we will see.

With Bucholtz being sent down it does present some scheduling challenges. It is being said that Wakefield could come back sometime next week, but from a Sox perspective I hope it isn’t against you guys. Too often after the first two innings it is like batting practice for you guys against Wake.

The other unknown is our old friend Bartolo Colon. In his last AAA start he pitched four hitless innings so who knows?

  721. G. Love August 22nd, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I don’t know why with Giambi playing this putrid they don’t bring up Miranda and give him a stint. Seriously, why are they acting like Giambi was a member of the dynasty years. He’s been a major disappointment and the team should release him to see what they have in Miranda.

Anyone at 1b is better than Giambi at this point.

Girardi is a moron if he keeps penciling his name into the lineup, let alone the 5 hole.

I know when he first got picked up by you guys there were a lot of jokes about Ponson, but he really has done a decent job for you guys even considering his last game.

Also need I point out again how awful Sterling is.

He first said Nady was at bat, than he was totally confused about who batted. He didn’t notice that Ransom was in for defense, and his pathetic homerun call was handsome ransom. I mean, does he think Yankee fans want to hear his childish homerun calls.

Next when Nady hit his homerun he has in the gap, oh its gone!!

Does he pay attention to the game? Or is he too busy coming up with his calls?

girardi doesn’t bench giambi because he is a nice guy, he always says the right things, doesn’t complain, and is a good person.

if he was a prick, he would have been benched by now. see posada who was taken out from behind the plate after one bad game because he was chirping a lot to the media and that ticked off girardi.

or kennedy who was banished to the minors after his stupid comments.

damon is the next guy who might go to girardi’s dughouse hopefully soon so we can see gardner and can avoid his deplorable defense in center.

  744. pat August 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm

The other night listening to the Jays game in the car, Sterling says Jeter bunts down the 3rd baseline and left everyone hanging for 30 seconds whether it was a hit,out or foul ball while he told a story and then said the count is 0-1. 2 batters later A-Rod hit a fly to center and he started his HR call. At that point, I shut the radio

  745. jennifer August 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm

I also heard him Call Ransom Jason. Because you know they bat from the same side of the plate, and can easily be confused. :P

  746. Forntoso August 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm

No excuses for Hughes. Kennedy was a victim of terrible defense against the Angels too and was blooped to death in that 3rd inning, yet everybody wanted him gone while Hughes gets a pass.

We field 7 DHs every night too, so its not like he has better defense up here.

He did give up 3 doubles and HR, and a walk/HBP so even if a couple of those infield balls were fielded, he still would have given up 6 runs in 3 innings to the worst team in AAA who just faced him last week. Hardly a consolation prize. He was awful tonight either way.

  747. Brandon ( WOO HOO PAVANO PITCHES ON SAT, LIQUOR NIGHT FOR ME) August 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 pm

First batter: Jon Knott homered by lunging at a pitch and getting just enough of it to carry over the wall in left.
Second batter: Jason Jaramillo singled on a ground ball just past second baseman Chris Basak.
Third batter: Chris Snelling grounded a changeup for a routine double-play ball, but first baseman Juan Miranda dropped the throw from second and Snelling reached on a fielder’s choice. One out.
Fourth batter: T.J. Bohn was hit by a pitch.
Fifth batter: Mike Rouse slapped a single into shallow left field. Barely got enough of it to get over the shortstop’s head. Bases loaded, still one out.
Sixth batter: Brandon Watson slapped a double just over the third baseman and into the left field corner. Two runs scored, runners to second and third, still one out.
Seventh batter: Oscar Robles grounded out to third. I think Eric Duncan should have thrown home and the scout sitting next to me agreed there would have been a play at the plate, but Duncan played it safe and the run scored. Two outs.
Eighth batter: Mike Cervenak, just sent down from Philly, struck out.

Obviously it wasn’t a good inning, but it really wasn’t a bad one. Two bloopers, a ground ball with eyes and a home run that somehow carried enough to leave the yard. Hughes is sitting 91-93 with his fastball, he’s thrown a few good changeups and his curveball is making some guys look silly. But a four-run inning is a four-run inning.

Sounds like bad defense and cheap hits to me plus dead arm :? Lets see if Hughes saids he was happy w. his start :D

“He had a little stiffness in his back,” said manager Tony Franklin.

“There’s no sense in leaving him in there and having him tighten up, so we got him out of there and brought him in.”

While this doesn’t appear to be serious, it’s something worth keeping an eye on, and also something I hope to have more about tomorrow.

Tony Franklin w. an organizational move there.

LOL, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a fanboy. I’m surprised he didn’t go on to say it most likely wasn’t Hughes pitching, rather someone disguised as Hughes. A cheap homerun that went over the WALL. That’s comical. He’d look MUCH more intelligent just saying Hughes was bad.

Moose on the ball he caught that was hit right back at him:

“I didn’t have time for flashbacks,” Mussina said. “I just got my glove up and it went in my glove. I mean, I saw it the whole time. But if the guy’s going to hit it hard, hit it hard somewhere else besides back at me. He can get a hit, I don’t care. Just don’t hit me with it. I’m too old for that.”

Yes, final score has no bearing in that situation, just that it was a save situation when Mo came in and he then completed the game.

If Girardi had put Edwar in for the bottom of the 9th, no save for anyone.

Send Hughes to A-Ball like the Tigers did with Willis.

Even Ian Kennedy never got shelled like this by AAA hitters.

But knowing the Yankees, they’ll probably leave him in AAA instead and teach him a splitter next and ask him to re-find his slider and scrap the curve while wearing contacts only during day games while throwing from the 3/4 arm slot!!
