Chicks dig the long ball

Peter Abraham
August
23

The Orioles keep close track on how many balls land over the wall in right field onto Eutaw Street.

There have been seven this season – five by opponents. The Yankees have three of them. Jason Giambi connected on May 27 and 28 and Robinson Cano last night.

River Ave reporting that joba going back to pen, ridiculous

  3. mike

    Why so ridiculous?

  4. chr1zis

Looks like the Yanks will miss Beckett.. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing the way he has been pitching lately..

  5. Tom H

Sorry should have read the article first, not just the headline– they aren’t reporting anything other than what pete has posted in here before, using the Giradi “creative” quote as their basis

  6. mike

    Why is that so bad?

  7. Travis

Well, Tom, at least you were first, right? I am sure Pete has a big prize for you, along the lines of the one he gave to Justin C. last night.

  11. Clare

    Peter,

I know this title is a joke, however, it’s not funny for any woman who reads this blog regularly, and realizes just how sexist you are.

The way you constantly comment on Jeter’s girlfriends, the way you used to continually call J.D. Drew “Nancy Drew”, and particularly the “joke” you made about Minka Kelly and Madonna all illustrate that you have a sexist and adolescent attitude towards women.

A man who plainly demonstrates this type of attitude on a regular basis just cannot use the word “chick”, except when referring to baby birds.

  12. Mark (Brett is back)

Clare that title is a reference to a Nike commercial with Tom Glavine and I think either Maddux or Smoltz.

    Great spot- relax

  17. Travis

Yeah, Peter, shame on you for your entertaining headlines and humorous nicknames!!

  18. contrarian

Pete is aiming for the same demographic that Nike was. You use the vocabulary of the people you want to reach.

  20. Clare

    Tom H.

When you tell me to relax – what exactly are you trying to say? Do you think that Peter is not sexiest? Do you think both the spot and Peter’s headline are sexist, but not offensively so because they’re funny?

Or are you saying relax and emjoy the sexism because it’s entertaining and humorous to male readers?

  21. DFox

“Or are you saying relax and emjoy the sexism because it’s entertaining and humorous to male readers?”

Clare, sorry to break the news, but you’re coming of as a whiner.

Chicks dig the long ball was a FAMOUS line back when Nike did the commercial. It’s part of history and is still used today. If you don’t like things that might come along with baseball, like the commonly used “Chicks dig the long ball” saying, then why come to a BASEBALL blog? You’re better off going to Nickelodeon.

  22. 86w183

IF Joba pitchas again this year I’m certain it will be out of the pen. This much time off means he would have to be built back up to a starter over several outings. It makes more sense to go easy on him the rest of the way and hope to piecemeal together a rotation for the final five weeks.

The nice thing the Yanks get a healthy Wang and Joba for the start of ‘09. No one in the AL East can top that heading into the hot stove league.

  23. Kill-Schill(ing)

    Clare, have you tried Monistat-1?

Pete’s alluding to an old Nike promotional campaign that featured the Glavine and Maddux and Mark McGuire.

  24. Getting Late

    Clare,

You think it’s sexist, some think it is entertaining; both are right (in their minds).

If you are that offended, you should boycott the site.

  25. chr1zis

    9-0 canada jays

  26. Tint

    Clare said,

Do you think that Peter is not sexiest?

Of course I think Peter is the sexiest. He’s the sexiest beat writer east of Chicago.

  27. Clare

    DFox,

Sorry, but I don’t accept the fact that baseball and sexism are necessarily intertwined. If you think that’s whining, too bad.

You are focusing on the ad, and my main point was Peter’s attitude in general. The ad might be funny in a neutral context, but when it’s quoted by a man with Peter’s consistent attitude that he’s displayed on this blog, it is not funny.

  28. Eric

Stop beating up Pete over this and relax…. there’s a war going on, and the us economy is crap. Focus on real issues losers!

  29. Tom H

Clare- just saying that I didn’t think Pete was out of line here, just a funny reference- not trying to ruffle any feathers

  30. contrarian

    Clare,

No reason you should leave the site.

Just continue to speak up. You haven’t said anything offensive, you haven’t made personally denigrating cracks like Kill-Schill has. You’ve just expressed a perfectly legitimate opinion. Whether I agree with your views or not they are at least expressed civilly.

  31. S.A.-Can the Yanks win a series? Please? This offense is still offensive.

Wow. The Jays are really pounding the Red Sox

  32. DFox

“The ad might be funny in a neutral context, but when it’s quoted by a man with Peter’s consistent attitude that he’s displayed on this blog, it is not funny.”

So then why do you come here? I don’t get it. If I actually thought someone was sexist or racist or whatever bad qualities they had, I certainly wouldn’t read their blog and put ad revenue in their pocket.

Pete is how he is. You have to learn that on the internet, whether it’s right or not, almost all sites cater to the majority of their users rather than the minority. You’re in a VERY tiny minority, women who read the blog who are offended. There’s plenty of women who read this blog who I doubt would be offended with things so minuscule, but I’m sure there some who are, but that’s probably less than 1% of readers.

He should change the way he is to cater to less than 1% of readers? That’s just irrational thinking.

  33. Andrea

I went to an all women’s college and was a women’s studies minor (we didn’t have a major). I heard every day about sexism this, sexist that.

That being said, I’m not in the least offended by anything Pete says. “Nancy” is a colloquial term in England for a pansy of a man, so Nancy Drew really isn’t even a problem for me.

Take it easy. Pete gives us so much info that we wouldn’t get elsewhere. If he makes harmless jokes that you don’t like, don’t read.

  34. DFox

“No reason you should leave the site.”

Yes, there would be. If you actually have beliefs, and express an opinion that a site or something practices things that are against your morals, continuing to go to it shows one thing: Your “morals” are much less important that going to a baseball blog. That’s nothing to feel good about.

  35. Z-Mills

    Sexist????

    Oh Cmon!

  36. Tom H

anyone else concerned that getting joba back to speed in big september games from the pen could hurt him (too much pressure games to “build up his arm”)

  37. chr1zis

10-0 lead for our allies from the north

  38. Mehdi iis one half Arsenal and one half Yankees

what a weird way to spell Utah.

  39. Clare

    Andrea,

If you think homophobia is okay, I’m not surprised that you don’t have a problem with Peter’s comments.

All, I’m not conceding the debate here, but I do have to go out, so this is it for the day.

One last point – yes it’s a cute ad, but it’s OLD. Nike would never run something like that now. I would hope that we’ve progressed a bit since the McGwire days, but I guess not.

  40. Andrea

I’m actually a little bit offended that you’d call me sexist. But I think I won’t take it personally because you obviously were not getting what I was saying about the “Nancy Drew” thing, so you go ahead and enjoy your day.

Tom H: I’m not that concerned re: Joba in the bullpen. They need him to pitch somewhere, but they don’t want to push it with his arm.

  41. Scorpio

I don’t know how in any way, shape or form can Pete be construed as sexist. Yeah, he occasionally points out that a woman is hot BUT it ain’t no different from the women on this board who call Derek Jeter hot.

Get a new cause, there sexism in this world for sure but it’s not on this blog.

  42. Jeff NJ: Let Joba Play!

Pete, keep up the good work, if people feel they need to label you when you write like a normal guy would speak, then they are the ones with issues.

  43. chr1zis

If chicks dig the long ball, Vernon Wells must be attracting the ladies today. 2 Bombs and a 11-0 lead for the jays.

  44. BBFan

I am Ok with the title of this entry, but Clare was right in her observation about his attitude. As an example, when Pavano’s girl friend parted ways with him, Pete posts her picture, implies she was cute and wonders if she has a sister. Given the audience of this blog, especially with so many kinds, that is sexist attitude.
There is nothing wrong Clare calling out Pete on this.

  45. BBFan

… typo, I meant kids (not kinds).

  46. murphdyog

Chicks dig the long ball, ugly guys with 8 gold medals and rich, good looking sports writers like Pete Abe ;)

  47. Kill-Schill(ing)

    “Personally Denigrating”, contrarian? Come on.

  48. Laura - I can hear the fat lady starting to sing! Somebody shut her up!

Xavier Nady is wicked hot!!! Is that sexist? Possibly. Do I care? Not in the least.

Now, can we get back to talking about baseball?

  49. Jeff NJ: Let Joba Play!

Looks like we’re going to have an opportunity to gain a game tonight, the Yankees must win.

  50. Todd Drew

    Murphydog,
It’s good to see you back. I noticed you slogging through the comments last Saturday, too. I look forward to having you in the everyday lineup. With you and Matsui both ready to play it’s all coming together for the stretch drive.

  51. Don Pratt

    Home Run!

Bernie just won game 1 of the ‘96 ALCS!!!!

  52. Andrea

“Does she have a sister” isn’t sexist, really. “I wish she were naked because that’s all she’s good for,” that’s sexist.

Let’s have some perspective. It’s all in fun.

  53. S.A.-Can the Yanks win a series? Please? This offense is still offensive.

So Pavano is really pitching today..
Still can’t believe it has come to this. Of course the offense needs to stop being offensive and get something going consistently

  54. Peter Abraham

    Clare:

i have not “constantly” commented on Jeter’s girlfriends. Be serious now. And if I havem it’s been in fun, not in a sexist way.

“Chicks did the long ball” was a reference to the Nike commerical that was very funny. I have gone out of my way to make sure everybody on here is respectful of women on my blog and have banned many people for not being so.

I think if you ask Jenn, Rebecca, Stephanie and any one of a number of woman who frequent this site, I have been respectful, I answer all e-mails, etc.

If I can make silly references to old Nike commericals, I might as well not do this. I’m just having some fun.

  55. Tom H

Wow who would have thought this would be the topic of convo on the day Carl Pavano comes back. Big game, we can eliminate the Toronto series with a win tonight and get some good feelings going down the stretch.

  56. murphydog

    Todd Drew:

Good to see you too, brother.

Been extra busy lately saving alleged criminals from overzealous prosecutors and police. (Well, that’s the company line, anyway. Sadly, most of my clients are their own worst enemies). It’s been hard to get enthusiastic about our underperforming pinstriped millionaires while I still have the scent of the holding pens in my nostrils. But on Saturdays and Sundays I can still spend some time with the baseball bloggies.

  57. Todd Drew

    Murphydog,
That’s good to hear. Usually when my friends disappear they are the ones doing the time. The Yankees are gonna get it going and put together a run. Keep fighting the good fight.

  58. Clare

    Peter,

Thanks for the response. However, I can’t accept that your comments about Jeter’s girlfriends are fun, not sexist.

For example, you said just last week:

    * “Madonna turned 50 the other day. 50! Minka Kelly is 28. It must be tough for Derek Jeter not to burst out laughing every time he talks to A-Rod.”

Yes, I realize that’s a “joke”, but don’t you see the sexism? Leaving aside the fact that you’re taking tabloid reporting at face value, you are explicitly stating that the relative worth of these two women is completely, and solely, dependent on their age and relative attractiveness. How is that not juvenile and sexist?

  59. GreenBeret7

Not so sure it was a sexist remark, but, it was a joke about 10 years ago and stopped being funny 9 and a half years ago. Not sure that I blame Clare that much, though. There are a lot of sexist remarks on here being passed of as being clever or humorous. There are too many guys on this board that seem to enjoy making sexist remarks to the women…I suppose because they’re embarrassed that the women know more about baseball than they do. What’s just as embarrassing is that nobody does anything to control it. Hate to break the news, little fellas, but, try as you may, this isn’t a male bastion. More than half of the women can hold a baseball conversation with anybody… a good portion are asking questions to learn, then, there are a few that use a woman’s SN to hide behind.

Now, I’m off of my soap opera.

How about that Carl Pavano guy that’s pitching for NYY, tonight? Maybe this game will equal his last game against the Twins in 2007….7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts on 79 pitches.

  60. Kill-Schill(ing)

Hey, Murph, we evidently do the same work. In what jurisdiction do you walk the corridors of injustice?

  61. murphydog

    GB7:

    How ya’ feeling these days?

  62. murphydog

    Kill-Schill(ing):

Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, the 4 boros (just say “No” to Richmond County).

  63. Kill-Schill(ing)

I’ll keep that in mind about Richmond. Don’t worry I avoid the Goethels and the Outerborough like the plague out here in Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson.

  64. GreenBeret7

Good afternoon, Murph. I’m doing just fine. Just practicing being a crusty old man. I’ve gotten out of shape by being a nice guy. Made me ill. Thanks for asking.

How are you and your family? Doing fine, I hope.

  65. Travis

The last time I found a blog to be sexist (and this isn’t one), I stopped reading it. How’s that for a solution?

  66. murphydog

    GB7:

Me and the family, including the infamous dog, are fine, thanks. Feel better.

  67. murphydog

    Kill-Schill(ing):

BTW nothing against Richmond’s courts or staff , really, it’s just too big a travel problem for me.

  68. harrs44

If you have a problem with Pete’s purported sexism, click on that long, narrow window in the upper-left portion of your screen and type in a new address. Pretty simple, really.

  69. lil' m

I’m a woman, and I have absolutely no problem with references to the Captain’s girlfriends, or with Pete’s headline, which I found hilarious. Re Madonna vs. Minka Kelly, Pete’s observation was again spot on and very funny. Clearly the Captain is getting the better deal in that comparison, and the roster of his reputed girlfriends is, to say the least, impressive. I called Moose a dreamboat in a post after Thursday’s game – is that sexist too? I find Pete to be respectful towards one and all, and very, very funny. And as to the title of this entry, yes, we do lol. Vive la différence!
