A sweep is most certainly in the works

  2. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

  3. j August 24th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

yankees need to sweep but 2/3 seems to be good as well.

  4. RayBlay August 24th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

ooooh Byrd vs. Ponson… that sounds like a blast!

  5. RayBlay August 24th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

    pun intended

  6. ZMAN7777 August 24th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Very even pitching matchups. Beating Wakefield is a must, obviously.

  7. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 24th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

With an eye on the next series:

    -Parrish/Pavano
    -Burnett/Rasner (TBD-haha)
    -Halladay/Pettitte

  8. kd August 24th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

It really looks like we could make a move here

  9. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Post Game Aceves/Melancon teaser report via Chad Jennings:

Almost too good to be true, but Alfredo Aceves (left) said he was only vaguely aware that there were three major league hitters in the Buffalo lineup Sunday night. The Bisons had Josh Barfield, Victor Martiinez and Travis Hafner batting two, three and four — probably a better group than Cleveland’s Jamey Carroll, David Dellucci and Jhonny Peralta — but Aceves spent the past six years in the Mexican League said he didn’t know before the game that those three were rehabbing. He treated them like any other minor league hitters.

Nearly as impressive as Aceves was Mark Melancon, who retired six straight, stranding an inherited runner from Aceves in the seventh then putting the side down in order in the eight. The guy really is impressive to watch, and frankly, pretty impressive to talk to. I asked him today if hitters at this level are challenging him differently than those he faced in Double-A and in A ball.

    Chad Jennings

    Enjoy.

it’s now or never.no time to waste.take out the broom.

  11. luis August 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

can they move mussina to wednesday and bring mr. idle on thursday??

  12. russ August 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

    i’m more scared of toronto.

  13. Mike from North Carolina August 24th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Well, this is the season right here. Match-ups look pretty even on paper, but with the way Jon Lester has pitched against the Yankees this year, I’m not too sure about thursday’s game. Hoping, with everyone else, that they pull out the sweep here, but it’s going to be a tough series as always.

  14. MoBoy(aka McLovin) August 24th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

It feels like a sweep. But with Ponson playing horrible in he’s last start and Pettitte not able to play good against contenders this is gonna be more tough then it should be.

Good thing this team is hitting.

  15. Nate August 24th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Better win game one. Ponson got tagged by Boston first time around and Lester pitches to a 1.00 ERA against the Yanks this year (16:3 K/BB ratio).

  16. JR Yankees August 24th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I too like our chances for atleast 2 out of 3. The lineup looks a lot better now that Matsui is back. Now if only Girardi would get Giambi out of the 5 spot…put Matsui or Nady there.

We definately have an opportunity to make a move…its now or never and obviously the odds have been against us for a while now. I think we should all come to grips with the fact that we will be facing all good pitching for the majority of the remaining season. Each team is gonna throw everything they’ve got at us from here on out.

  17. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

    i’m more scared of toronto.

Really I’m more scared of our bats/defense, if they decide not to show up this won’t be pretty.

  18. Howard August 24th, 2008 at 10:57 pm

    Oh baby, please sweep

  19. Art Vandelay August 24th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I’m still predicting that we miss the playoffs but my heart tells me that we will sweep and get back into this race.

  20. Yankees Fan August 24th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

    Pete,

How about Aceves instead of Rasner?

  21. sw August 24th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

I agree with luis, I wish Moose would go on Wednesday and Carl on Thursday.

  22. Dan Giese's Aunt August 24th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Benches will clear…this is a brawl series

  23. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Benches will clear…this is a brawl series

At this point of the season, niether team can afford to be that dumb.

  24. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 24th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

I hope Joe gives the IBB when Manny comes to the plate against Moose. I can’t bear to see another one leave the yard.

  25. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I hope Joe gives the IBB when Manny comes to the plate against Moose. I can’t bear to see another one leave the yard.

mel sweety are you ok ?

  26. Stephen M August 24th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

There’s a different Joe who might walk Manny tonight, but that’s about it.

  27. PreteFunkEra August 24th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

“I hope Joe gives the IBB when Manny comes to the plate against Moose. I can’t bear to see another one leave the yard.”

Yankees are playing the Dodgers? Why didn’t I get the memo?

  28. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 24th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

    Brandon,

Just getting the inevitable complaining started. Mind as well start off on the wrong foot.

  29. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Brandon, I left you a response to Montero in the last thread.

  30. Frank V. August 24th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

I think Mel fell asleep for the last month. And it’s “might as well” not “mind as well” FYI.

  31. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Yeh I did. I told you thanks and that I heard him also being compared to Pujols, I knew he had power but I did not know it was line drive 450 feet plus type power 8O

  32. COL 88 August 24th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Ponson vs. Byrd will end at 11:45 PM.

  33. pop August 24th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Why the hell aren’t they skipping Ponson?

  34. E-Man August 24th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

“Why the hell aren’t they skipping Ponson?”

    For who?

    Pavano? Rasner?

  35. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 24th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Frank V,

lol. Thanks for that. I speak two languages, English and Pidgen. :)

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime August 24th, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Gonna be one crazy series. This is our season right hee.

  37. pop August 24th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Mussina pitched Friday night. Friday to Wednesday is five days.

  38. Don Pratt August 24th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

I’m calling it now – Byrd v Ponson will be a 2-1 game.

  39. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

What a game on ESPN right now

  40. COL 88 August 24th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Now they are cheering Rollins lol

  41. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

unless he hangs one J-Roll ain’t hitting him

  42. Forntoso August 24th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Manny is going to be a monster in Citizens Bank Park next season.

  43. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

That really pisses me off Jimmy Rollins does not deserve boos, this guy is the leader of the Phillies, the main guy that spoke out and stepped up. Man that sucks.

  44. raymagnetic August 24th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

“Really I’m more scared of our bats/defense, if they decide not to show up this won’t be pretty.”

Thanks for the groundbreaking analysis. Of course you could also say if the pitching doesn’t show up this won’t be pretty as well.

  45. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Oh boo him now Philly but that guy (Manny) is going to be on your team next year.

  46. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Brandon, both Montero and Laird’s numbers and probably Suttle’s numbers would be a lot better, but, Joe Riley Stadium has a pretty big left field and the winds usually blow in from left center field off of the river. They’re still doing pretty good despite the winds.

  47. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Thanks for the groundbreaking analysis. Of course you could also say if the pitching doesn’t show up this won’t be pretty as well.

I wanted to leave no doubt.

  48. pop August 24th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Philly is going to let Burrell walk in favor of Manny Ramirez? Why?

  49. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Well Durbin just ended the suspense in this game.

  50. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

    WTF ?

  51. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Pop, talk/rumors have Philadelphia trading Howard and moving Burrell to first base.

  52. Forntoso August 24th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Joe Biemel is a lefty specialist that allows lefties to hit .288 against him, 30 points higher than rightes?

Looks like Torre found his new Mike Myers lol

  53. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

GB I wonder what they would want for Ryan Howard.

  54. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Rollins’, Utley’s and Howard’s averages have really gone in the toilet this year.

  55. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

BTW I think Tony Paige is there tonight.

  56. hank hal August 24th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Kennedy, McAllister, Heredia, and Robertson for Howard?

  57. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

I’m guessing young, cheap pitching and a young outfield bat or 3rd baseman would be at the top of the list, Brandon

  58. Johnnmcabe August 24th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Do you ALL realize… that if the Sox take just ONE game of the series….. the Yankees only gain one game on the Sox and THEN face the Blue Jays with Burnett and Halladay in tow??

Spinning your tires in the mud!

    10-11 in August.

  59. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 24th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

So Kevin Whelan, Ian Kennedy, Jairo Heredia, Colin Curtis for Ryan Howard..I might do that.

  60. RayBlay August 24th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I really REALLY hope Joe Morgan was joking about Howard being picked off because Torre is a “genius.” I can never understand the tone of his voice, anyway. Was he kidding?

  61. GreenBeret7 August 25th, 2008 at 12:07 am

I’d think they’d want someone other than Curtis and Whelen. It would most likely have to be a right handed hitter, also. It might have to be a Robertson or Ortiz and Suttle. Depends on how soon Philadelphia needs them to be ready. Maybe they can add Eric Duncan to your package with Robertson or Edwar Ramirez. How about Kennedy, Robertson/Ramirez, Duncan, Curtis, Heredia and (cash) for Howard and Myers. Their farm is a bit thin and they get salary relief.

  62. Bronx Jeers August 25th, 2008 at 12:09 am

The Baltimore series seems to have woken up the bats but our rotation looked very exposed. The pen sure could use this off day to recover after 3 shaky starts. Man we sure could use the services of wang/joba at this time of the season.

  63. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 12:09 am

Victorino made Manny look bad there.

  64. Chris August 25th, 2008 at 12:09 am

Great hustle by Manny right there letting Victorino get an easy double

  65. Nick in SF August 25th, 2008 at 12:09 am

Victorino energized by Hawaii LLWS champs.

  66. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 12:11 am

Victorino energized by Hawaii LLWS champs.

  67. Forntoso August 25th, 2008 at 12:12 am

    Jason Johnson? He’s still around?

I remember he was with Cleveland a couple years ago he hit Posada and Jorge chirped at him then Randy threw at Eduardo Perez and was ejected.

Then he signed with the Red Sox and we beat him up in game 1 of the Massacre.

  68. AZ Four August 25th, 2008 at 12:13 am

This is a great game. Nothing like extra innings on Sunday Night in late August in a pennant race.

  69. PreteFunkEra August 25th, 2008 at 12:14 am

Ok, Someone please recap this Howard trade stuff. I’m a little lost.

I doubt anyone will see this but I know Pete reads the comments and I would love to pick his brain over this since he mentioned recently the respect he has for Nick of the Boston Glove. Click that link to read what he had to write the other night. I thought a lot of people on these boards were being a little protective of the Yankees when they said Nick wasn’t very good, but after reading that I’d have to agree. What a load of garbage that was. I realize New York writers give the Redsox backhanded compliments all the time, but for a guy who Pete says is sooo incredible, I’d expect better.

And Pete you might want to tell your boy to get over Manny. He’s gone, no one cares if he does or doesn’t tip the clubhouse attendants. How much did the sox front office pay out to the writers to make Manny look bad?

  71. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 12:19 am

Can Cole Hamels take 2 games from the Dodgers

  72. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 12:20 am

    Nope.

  73. Nick in SF August 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Cole Hamels needed a Baby Cole for good luck.

But Pedro Feliz just needed his bat!

  74. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am

The Clutch Pedro Feliz WALKOFF 3 RUN SHOT !

  75. GreenBeret7 August 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Prete, just killing an evening. Rumor has Philadelphia resigning Burrell and moving him to first, signing Ramirez and trading Howard over the winter. Just rumors and not much more, right now. I was asked about what it would take to get Howard and I said young pitching and a young outfield bat or 3rd baseman.

  76. steve August 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am

    cole hameles lol

  77. Nick in SF August 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Nothing like the extra innings walk-off to screw with people who bet the run line.

  78. PreteFunkEra August 25th, 2008 at 12:23 am

    Thanks Green

Question about the Olympics closing ceremonies: right now there are a ton of Chinese kids singing what I guess is the Olympic anthem. Or something. My question is, are there a ton of less attractive Chinese kids somewhere doing the actual singing?

  80. GreenBeret7 August 25th, 2008 at 12:27 am

Not a problem, Prete. When this deal comes true, ya’ll can buy my new book, GreenBeret7adomus’ Baseball Predictions and Other Intelligent Thoughts”.

  82. Al from BK(Practice doesn't make perfect, Calvin Pace makes perfect) August 25th, 2008 at 1:18 am

Wake, Byrd and Lester. This isn’t the cream of the Sux crop and Wake is coming back off of an injury. I think the first two games are winnable, however Lester has looked like God against us this year so a sweep looks improbable.

  83. Brandon (Can Baby Mo stay w/ us ?) August 25th, 2008 at 1:20 am

I wouldn’t want Howard if he was for free. A poor fielding 1B with 0 plate discipline who K’s 200 times a year doesn’t really impress me. Yes he would hit 60 HR’s in YS but watching him K 200 times would be too frustrating.

that’s a winnable series. the next six games make or break the season. i’m sure that seems hyperbolic to some, but they’re running out of time.

  87. PreteFunkEra August 25th, 2008 at 1:42 am

You are absolutely right Andy is Dandy in a big game. It also helps that Beckett is not the guy in the other dugout I have faith in the big lefty.

  90. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 25th, 2008 at 1:53 am

    Prete,

Got a good feeling any time Andy takes the mound.

    Pettitte ERA 4.17 REC 13-9

    Last appearances:
    8/20 at TOR 7.0 IP, 1 ER W, 5-1
    8/15 vs KAN 7.0 IP, 3 ER ND, 4-3

  91. PreteFunkEra August 25th, 2008 at 2:05 am

I agree. Also since Andy is the first one always to man up and state clearly that he and this team can do better….I believe the boys will have a little bounce in their step tuesday.

  93. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 25th, 2008 at 2:07 am

Getting back to the sac bunt debate.

The bats were quiet for the Phillies tonight against Kuroda. The first run in the fifth was set up by a sac bunt.

Bottom of the 9th, down 2-1. Leadoff single. What do the Phillies do? Sacrifice bunt to get Victorino into scoring position. 3 batters later, tie game.

Philly won a game 5-2 on 7 hits in 11 innings.

Ignore the fact that the Dodgers had 13 hits and failed to capitalize.

The fact is that it was a tight game and small ball kept them in the game until they got the big hit.

I know the Yankees get paid big bucks and you take the bat out of their hands, but I’d like to see more small ball to help out in games where our offense is being shut down.

  94. Theresa August 25th, 2008 at 2:10 am

    Hi mel,

Congrats on the Waipio victory. I was watching the phils / dodgers game tonight and found out Victorino is from Hawaii – now I understand your “favorable” comments about him. And I’ve always liked him because of his italian sounding surname.

Hey, sometime last week there was a discussion that caused you to look up something on wikepedia (you found something on Mo’s cousin). Anyway, you made a comment about not letting your kids use wikepedia as a reference tool. Why?

  95. PreteFunkEra August 25th, 2008 at 2:11 am

I bet Nady, Gardner, and Ransom can bunt. Nady should be #5 and Ransom/Garner should be used strategically for that purpose…..small ball / speed.

  96. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 25th, 2008 at 2:22 am

    Hi, Theresa!

In my book, there are different levels of reliable web “sources”.

From the least reliable to most reliable:

    -message boards
    -blogs
    -Wikipedia
    -sites with advertising
    -newspapers & mags
    -Encarta and other encylcopedias

The problem with Wikipedia is that it’s open source (?) and as far as I know, can be edited.

They do use Wikipedia as a starting point and follow the links at the bottom of the articles.

If I had to take a wild guess without doing a search beyond Wikipedia, I’d say Victorino is a Filipino name. Believe it or not, not too many Italians made it past San Francisco. :)

  97. Theresa August 25th, 2008 at 2:44 am

    mel,

Thanks. I guess it was alot less confusing when we were kids and the only “source” we had available was the good old set of World Book Encyclopedias in the den.

So does that mean I wouldn’t find a “Little Italy” anywhere on the Islands?

  98. Pepitone August 25th, 2008 at 2:49 am

The Yanks have to sweep this series to have any chance. They also must go at least 7-2 on this coming road trip. I think they are capable of taking 2 of 3 from TB, and sweeping the Marlners, but 2 of 3 from the Angels is a tall order.

That being said, I have little hope that they have a chance, they’re just too far back.

But, I do appreciate the fact that they are starting to play like professionals again.

  99. mel (Congrats to the World Champions, Waipio!) August 25th, 2008 at 2:53 am

    Theresa,

It’s a melting pot as you can tell from the Waipio team, but as far as I know there’s only a Chinatown which is literally just a few blocks of downtown Honolulu.

Are you Italian? I love the Italian language, culture, opera, couture, and of course, food!

If I had to live in Europe, Italy would be the place I’d want to live. Don’t think I’d want to marry an Italian, though. Too gigolo.

  100. Theresa August 25th, 2008 at 3:19 am

    mel,

Yes I am Italian, and yes I am married to one. Lol about the gigolo reference – his name is Sal but other than that there’s not much gigolo about him. (I mean that in a good way)

I wish I knew the language. My husband understands it fluently but doesn’t speak it too well. Get togethers with his family are a mixture of english & italian – sometimes the ones speaking italian don’t even realize they’re speaking both languages in the same sentence!

I have been to Italy once (16 years ago with his parents and sister and her husband, before kids), and it was beautiful.

And speaking of the Yanks, a sweep would really be nice, but I would sign up for 2 out of 3, with a walk off win off Papelbon for good measure!

    “walk off win Papelbon”
    Wow what a great idea.

    StandingO’Neil,

Great reference to the Cafardo piece. What was especially sloppy (or worse) on Cafardo’s part was the suggestion that it was Kennedy and Melky for Santana. That was never the case.

Yeah Ryan Howard strikes out too much. So did Ruth, Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Lou Brock and a bunch of other Hall of Famers. I have no clue if he’ll be shopped or what the Phillies will want, but to rule it out cold makes no sense.

That said, I prefer him as a DH to 1B where he is Giambi-like inept. Do the Yankes spend big into the future on a fulltime DH?

This is obviously a “must” week. Losing the series to Boston would all but seal the fate of this team, but a sweep would make things verrrrry interesting!

  104. Fredo Corleone August 25th, 2008 at 8:49 am

“You gotta believe he won’t be a human K machine the more he learns the strike zone.”

Howard’s had a couple 100 walk seasons, so strike zone knowledge doesn’t seem to be an issue. It’s the hole in his swing that won’t go away. He’s not a young guy. Same age as Adam Dunn. I think what you see is what you get with him.

  105. What team is this? August 25th, 2008 at 9:41 am

Mark my words, we are going to crush Lester on Thursday. Then we are going to get it handed back to us by the Jays this weekend.

  106. StandingO'Neill August 25th, 2008 at 9:58 am

See the problem with Ryan Howard isn’t that he strikes out too much, I couldn’t give two (you know whats) about that. It’s his pitiful .316 OBP and his pedestrian slugging percentage. Howard right now is basically league average with above average power.

Throw in his god awful defense and speed of negative -10 and you’re not getting a whole lot. Not to mention he makes a lot of money too.

Dare I say it, Ryan Howard isn’t even in Adam Dunn’s league.(This year at least)

  107. StandingO'Neill August 25th, 2008 at 10:40 am

I meant pedestrian slugging percentage for him. .475 is still very good but its way down where it usually is for Howard.

i keep hearing the yankees have to sweep boston.i disagree even though that would be great.things change very quickly.one week and they could be one game back in the loss column.i am very concerned with the toronto series going against halladay and burnett.should ponson and rasner be replaced with acevez and wright and is it too early to bring melancon up,melancon has been lights out in AAA.

On the ‘Nick of the Boston Glove” article:
“But now the Yankee masses are dwelling on the fact that the team wouldn’t give up Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera for Johan Santana, a deal that likely would have put the Yankees in the playoffs.”
The lynchpin of the Santana deal was Phil Hughes. The Twins asked for: Hughes, Melky, IPK and another prospect..(Marquez?) How can ANY reporter distort this to “Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera”?

Plus, I don’t think the Yankees are dwelling on it at all. Is Melky and IPK’s troubles a ‘kick in the pants’? Sure is. But the story hasn’t been told yet. Phil Hughes is still younger then most guys in AAA ball. IPK was ALWAYS viewed as a cost controlled #5 (#5′s can cost many millions…. see Washburn).

It’s funny how everyone applauds the ‘Beckett Deal’. Including this year, Beckett has been good, but no Ace.
His ERA+ for 2006-2008 is 95, 145, 104, or an average of 115. Wangs ERA+ over the same 3 years: 124, 121, 104, or average of 116. However, ‘salary dump’ Mike Lowell, had a 124 OPS+ in 2007 and was WS MVP w/an average 110 OPS+ for 2006-2008). For this they gave up Hanley Ramirez, OPS+ of: 116, 145, 144…. numbers better then Manny over the last 2 years. If the kid keeps his head on straight, Hanley Ramirez is ARod light. They also gave away Anibel Sanchez, who has been injured, but at age 24, has a 127 ERA+. So, looking from 2006 on, the Sox gave up:
    Sanchez (22): 127 ERA+, Ramirez (22): 135 OPS+ (under $1m/yr) for
    Beckett (26): 115 ERA+, Lowell (32): 110 OPS+ ($22.5m/yr)
So yeah, the Sox won it all last year, but look at those ages, salaries, and numbers. Which team got the better deal? Can you imagine the numbers Hanley might post at Fenway???

“Jason Giambi has a $21 million option, and you can bet the House That Ruth Built it won’t be picked up.”
While this is true, he forgot to mention that little $5m buyout, meaning renewing Giambi’s contract would actually cost the Yankees $17m. Still too much, but for a one-year contract, if we DON’T get Tex, considering Jason has a .900 OPS, it is not out of the question. Responsible reporters don’t just lose 5 million dollars.

First he says: “Half-year rental Pudge Rodriguez will likely be gone.”
Then he says: “There’s the uncertainty of Jorge Posada, who wants to catch next year, though the Yankees have no idea how much his surgically repaired right shoulder will bounce back.”
I guess he sees no connection what-so-ever between getting IRod and Posada’s uncertaun catching status?

When did ‘profession reporters’ become so bad?
Thank God for the Internet and blogs. Pretty soon these stooges won’t be read accept for material for FJM.com

  110. bru August 25th, 2008 at 11:10 am

the only way i give a player 20 million a year is if he is good offensively, defensively and brings money in for the team like arod.i read comments by economic experts that arod over his ten year contract will bring in 450 million extra dollars in for the yankees because of his home run record chase among other things.they will pay him about 420 million over ten years with the luxury tax included.according to those numbers his contract pays for itself and maybe then some.the yankees have to get out of the habit of signing these huge long term contracts and learn to lock up players like joba, cano, wang long term for less before they command big bucks.spend the money on young pitching, sabathia, sheets and thin out the logjam that they have with first baseman/dh/outfield and get rid of some of these 13-16 million dollar a year contracts,pettitte/abraeu/damon/matsui.get sabathia, put nady in right,dh posada.can you imagine a rotation of sabathia, wang, joba, pettitte, mussina or sabathia, wang, sheets, joba, mussina if pettitte and mussina will come back for 10 million a year.why does it cost the yankees miullions more a year for each player than every other team? pettitte making 16 million a year and becket making 10 million and kashmir making 8 million so becket and kashmir making approx 18 million combined compared to pettitte’s 16 million.would you trade pettitte for becket and kashmir?

  111. StandingO'Neill August 25th, 2008 at 11:13 am

Agree 100% OldYankFan. I didn’t feel like breaking it all down but you did a nice job of that for me, lol. I just thought it was interesting how this idiot was praised on the blog the other day, and then I actually read something he wrote and I was far from impressed.

It’s one thing to report the news, its another to pass off personal opinions as facts. (Kennedy and Melky for Santana, etc.)

  112. We MIss Paulie August 25th, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Its funny to see that BOston is still obsessed with the Yankees – always will be.

Looking back on the Santana trade is fine now, but lets remember the situation last winter. It was the right thing to do given the information we had.

And who does he think would have plated CF for the Yankees up until this point? Melky admittedly wasn’t good this year at the plate, but who would we have placed in CF all year before Nady got here that would have been better?

  113. Just Win Baby August 25th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Cafardo’s piece is akin to listening to national or out-of-town broadcasters talk about your team. They’re just not up on it.

  114. BULA February 28th, 2010 at 2:23 am

Heya! Excellent concept, but will this actually work?
