I want some of what Joe is smokin’

  2. Bronx Jeers August 27th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

    Red Sox go 15-15 (unlikely)

Yanks need to go 22-8 (hysterical laughter ensues)

  3. Brian August 27th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

I want to like Girardi I really do. But he makes it so damn hard. At least torre would admit when things were going south. I never wanted to get rid of him in the first place but it is what it is.

On a positive note, I watched Hughes pitch tonite and he looked really good. Not quite ready, but pretty good.

If he learns how to use his change up he will be what he was supposed to be. He kills rightys but has a tough time with lefties, thats where the change comes in.

  4. S.A.-Can the Yanks continue winning series? Please? This offense is still offensive. August 27th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

I want to like Girardi as well. I feel most fans do. However I have to side with Pete and others when he either blatently lies to the media or better yet, acts as if tomorrow is just another day.. If the team plays off of Joe’s statements I predict we go 10-20

  6. you gotta have faith August 27th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

    Brian, how did melky do?

  7. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit. August 27th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

I was dead set against Girardi from the beginning. I never wanted to see the results of his first year turn out like this, though.

I think there was a lot more to his being fired from his first managing job than what was reported.

  9. tim boat August 27th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

13 years later, we finally see who the real Clueless Joe is.

    Joe smokes Pineapple Express.

  13. Dr. J August 27th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

    lol nice Hank

    “They sucked”

  14. Groundhoggator August 27th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Maybe we can trade some veterans who clear waivers before the 8/31 deadline…

  15. Brian August 27th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

I wonder if Cashman has Donny baseball on speed dial?

  16. blee August 27th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

being blind to the facts isnt being optimistic, maybe he really doesnt realize that the team is close to,, if not already, out of the playoff picture..

Girardi’s loyalty and stubborn nature may doom us.. No changes? You cant try the same thing over and over and expect different results..
Abreu’s too passive, we dont need another table setter, bat him 2nd or lower down.. Bat Arod 3rd.. Arod’s left always with the decisive hit being up to him cuz Abreu will get out or walk.. and then Giambi behind him is batting .250 and even worse w/ RISP.. can we move him down the lineup now? talk about lack of protection.. Let Nady or Matsui, guys who can be situational hitters get some important ABs..

  17. Showalter '09 August 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Donnie baseball would be even more of a disaster than Girardi, same with Willie who was fired himself for faliure to control a clubhouse.

    It’s Bowa or Showalter time.

  18. church201 August 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

why does hank care that they sucked, the season was over two weeks ago right? clown.

  19. tim boat August 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Not from a lack of effort huh Joe?

    Sure fooled me!

  20. I want Michael Kay's job August 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

blee, if he still thinks this team has a shot at the playoffs let alone the world series, he should be fired at exactly 11:58 this evening

  21. RSM August 27th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

    Wow!
    Hank is like the “anti-Girardi”
    No sugar coating there.

  22. tim boat August 27th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

AHAHAHA. That clip is hysterical. Only took 2 minutes for the “I BELIEVE IN MY GUYS” crap.

Can we please bring in Bobby Valentine? At least HE has a personality.

  23. you gotta have faith August 27th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

in 2006 boston finished in third place in our division, did they not?

what did they do in 2007? does anyone remember? i cant remember i think i cut that memory from my brain, its in the garbage along with 2004 :)

my point is hopefully this team wont let this season dictate what happens next season, for example look at the rays!

  24. Brian August 27th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Yeah Bowa could help. I mean realistically Girardi isnt going anywhere, so we are just wasting our breath. At the very least a intense guy could be added to the coaching staff, a la Bowa the last few seasons. Paul O’neill anyone?

  25. I want Michael Kay's job August 27th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

I hope this team gets it together in the offseason.. I have hope they will. It starts now though..

  26. Rekallchen in Taiwan August 28th, 2008 at 12:00 am

    Dear Peter:
Looking this team made me heart broken….. Yeah, there will be a new season. In that new season, CMW、Joba will stay healthy in rotation all season. In that new season, Yankee will get rid of some AAA player who covered with MLB uniform……
This OCT., we will see 8 teams, but Yankee will not be there.

  27. RSM August 28th, 2008 at 12:00 am

“Maybe we can trade some veterans who clear waivers before the 8/31 deadline.”

    Never happen, but should.

  28. Showalter '09 August 28th, 2008 at 12:01 am

Cashman didn’t want Bowa back for some odd reason— yet he retained Long, Pena, and Thompson.

The only coaches Girardi got to pick were the BP coach and 3B coach, everything else was selected for him– so why couldn’t they make Girardi take Bowa?

    Very erroneous decision by Cashman.

  29. MoBoy(aka McLovin) August 28th, 2008 at 12:01 am

Time to be a Twins fan and hope they can win the wildcard. There only 2.5 games back.

If the Twins could can go past the Red Sox and Phillies beat the Mets then maybe this won’t be thast much of a bad season.

  30. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.) August 28th, 2008 at 12:02 am

    “It’s Bowa or Showalter time.”

Wow what a great idea. Bowa can go nuts on the guys and improve Cano’s play at the same time.

  31. S.A.-Can the Yanks continue winning series? Please? This offense is still offensive. August 28th, 2008 at 12:02 am

    That actually made me laugh

  32. Bronx is Burning (not in the 77' sense) August 28th, 2008 at 12:03 am

Not to be a total Spock or throw gas on the dwindling fire but…

Logically speaking if Girardi says Arod has hit with RISP for his whole career and Kepner goes out and says Arod hasn’t done it for certain seasons or for the postseason or whenever then technically, he hasn’t hit with RISP for his “whole” career. There are holes in his resume. It’s no big secret and sort of a non issue. If anyone thinks that this season was Arods fault, then they don’t even deserve to be in the same room with Girardi.

I think the point is ..is that Girardi sometimes talks out of the side of his mouth and it is not really productive.

Girardi needs to deal with the press not for the press’s sake or for our sake but for his teams sake. And when he’s hiding things or fibbing a little or spinning things unrealistically he is putting additional pressure on the press to find things out from the players themselves which is a distraction for them.

Torre was a master at making everybody feel good with his open door policy with the press. Jeez even I miss his postgame “fireside chats” that sometimes even made the fans feel good about what was going with the pulse of the team. Girardi is closer to Captain Queeg in that respect. The paranoia issue needs to be addressed if he is going to be here in the future as it is not helping the team.

  33. tim boat August 28th, 2008 at 12:03 am

At the end of that clip Girardi said that there are a lot of things you do different as a manager. YES, BUT EVIDENTLY TAKING GIAMBI OUT OF THE 5th SPOT ISN’T ONE OF THEM!

  34. Brian August 28th, 2008 at 12:03 am

    Rekallchen

“Yankee will get rid of some AAA player who covered with MLB uniform…”

    who do yo mean?

    Hank from NY Times:

“There is going to be a lot going on this off-season,” he said. “I promise you that.”

  37. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2008 at 12:06 am

Girardi says “this is a game of execution, you have to execute day after day after day.” Who’s he planning to execute 1st!!!

  38. DFox August 28th, 2008 at 12:06 am

I like what Hank did. They haven’t responded to anything, maybe the will respond to being insulted by the owner. I doubt they wan’t Hank insulting them and telling them they sucked.

  39. I want Michael Kay's job August 28th, 2008 at 12:07 am

    Bronx,
Exactly Joe’s problem. Either he can sleep well at night knowing he is lying/skewing the facts or he has the mind erasing laser that Will Smith used in Men In Black

  42. They shoot horses don't they? August 28th, 2008 at 12:11 am

There is a lot of talk about evaluating the players, the manager and the GM during the off season. And those are certainly worthy aspirations but I believe that that will all be for naught if the ownership itself doesn’t look at itself to see if they have the ability to make critical decisions about all of the people mentioned above.

It didn’t take Peter Angelos in Baltimore long to ruin a proud and profitable baseball operation in that town. Even a cash cow like the Yankee organization can be seriously undermined with just a few bad contracts (re: Giambi, Jeter, Arod, Abreu, Andy, Posada, Cano). Wow thats approximately 115M for seven players. All that money for a SS in serious decline, a decent 3B who is a head case, a 2B with an attitude problem, a catcher that no one has any idea if he can be an everyday catcher next year. A CF with no arm and a gimpy DH who thankfully can still hit even if he can’t play the field and the all the rest are just spare parts.

Signing 2 C.C.’s wouldn’t help this offensively challenged as well as defensively challenged team. I mean this will take a couple of years to work through.

Hal and Hank are on the clock and I wonder if they are up to the task?

  43. church201 August 28th, 2008 at 12:11 am

    R.I.P playoffs

    1995-2007

expects a-rod to hit .400/12/40 in meaningless september games

  44. Wangawa August 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am

It’s a good thing I don’t have a TV in my dorm at college. If I was actually home watching these games, it would be pretty rough.

  45. Dewey August 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am

This must be the “ugly” part Pete was talking about early last week.

  46. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef] August 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am

can’t believe that 2007>2008 when this year it seemed that they have the better advantage [on paper wise]

suxs to be a Yankees fan rite now, and it suxs that I will go to school in a couple of days and hear non stop rants from Met fans on how the Yankees sux.

    grr

  47. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am

I’m sorry, but can’t a writer ask Joe why he doesn’t change the lineup, instead of saying in generalities, what changes you think need made.

I again hope that we put Mussina on waivers with an agreement that he would be traded only to an AL contender, to give him a shot at 20 wins, and with the knowledge we’d like him back as FA.

  48. you gotta have faith August 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am

Jason Bay said this about pedroia :

“He’s a beauty. He’s kind of, I think, the Energizer Bunny for this team,” Bay said. “You know, he’s the one that stirs stuff up. Every team has got to have that guy.”

whose that guy for the yankees? jeter? damon? who?

  49. Bronx Jeers August 28th, 2008 at 12:13 am

Somehow I envision Girardi at season’s end sitting in some dark room alone rolling a pair of those relaxation balls in his hand and muttering something about how someone “stole his strawberries”

  50. Kill-Schill(ing) August 28th, 2008 at 12:14 am

I think I love Hank. How funny was that!

Does he enjoy playing the clown? Must be.

The Yankees need him around more often for comic relief.

    Damn, our boys are tight.

  51. No August 28th, 2008 at 12:14 am

At this point, you just have to laugh. Ah, playoffs, it was good to know ye.

  52. Bronx Jeers August 28th, 2008 at 12:16 am

“You know, he’s the one that stirs stuff up. Every team has got to have that guy.”

“whose that guy for the yankees? jeter? damon? who?”

Ponson stirs up a mean martini from what I hear.

  53. you gotta have faith August 28th, 2008 at 12:19 am

    Bronx Jeers:

hahahahahaha good one, can u imagine ponson handing out drinks after games like these? lol

  54. Brian August 28th, 2008 at 12:20 am

    you gotta have faith

Mekly was so-so. 1-4 with a RBI and a walk, but still looked lost at the plate at times.

One thing i forgot to mention before was how great Hughes curveball was. He struck out six batters with his curve. I’ve never seen it look that sharp.

  55. Hudson August 28th, 2008 at 1:02 am

Remember in the Sopranos, when the aging head of the New York crime family dies, and his dimwitted son tries to take the reins? The one who thinks he’s a player, thinks he’s going to be a Hollywood producer, thinks he’s got what his old man had… Thinks he’s smart, but is really quite dim?

Girardi reminds me of that guy.

Thinks he’s sharp, but everyone around him is rolling their eyes when he’s not looking.

  56. dennis August 28th, 2008 at 1:04 am

yeah…a horse farmer is going to put the yanks back on top! if hank went to some of our games i might care about what he has to say!

  57. Yankees Fan August 28th, 2008 at 7:33 am

    Bye-bye Girardi and bye-bye Cashman.

This was not a “transition” year, this was a fuc*in’ trainwreck.

    Blow it up.

  58. Ramondo Stallings August 28th, 2008 at 8:02 am

As a Yankee fan just like you it has been painfully obvious that this team just isn’t good enough to make the playoffs. People say “if Torre were here”…TORRE IS NOT HERE! Whether you like it or not Girardi is our manager and we must deal with that. This team through all of the injuries and more injuries has been expected to be able to make the playoffs and that just isn’t reality. Look at our pitching staff..Ponson, Rasner and now Pavano. It’s ridiculous for us to think they will make the playoffs with 3 of our pitchers who basically suck. I have for weeks now accepted the fact that after 13 seasons we have no playoffs coming. With that being said, it’s my hope that the “higher ups” do this organization right this off season b/c the whole IPK and Hughes thing was a PURE DISASTER!!

  59. in the shadows August 28th, 2008 at 8:24 am

How about this ? ” I am an idiot, I don’t know my @$$ from a hole in the ground. Hank, please fire me. ” ???

  60. Mark August 28th, 2008 at 8:56 am

Girardi: “We hit some hard foul balls tonight!”

    I’m beginning to wonder about Joe’s sanity….

  61. gdamac August 28th, 2008 at 11:10 am

Hey, the Mets blew a 7 game lead with 17 to play, ya never know.

  62. george September 2nd, 2008 at 8:53 am

cashman and girardi need to go, its too bad they didn’t get sweet lou ,he would have been great for this team. Arod is the best player I have seen in many years but when the money is on the line he chokes,he is not a clutch player never has been ,as a yankees fan for over 35 years I wish they could get rid of him and go after manny he may be crazy but the son of a bitch can hit when the game is on the line. Go after CC for one thing if he is in pin stripes and wong is healthy as well as Joba that will be 3 in your face lights out pitchers, if they can land one more than they will be in the mix at playoff time for years. As far as hitting goes change batting order to get alex out of the pressure hit him 3rd of 5th. Get rid of cano and giambi, keep matsui and damon, .goerge
