Red Sox trade for Kotsay

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Aug 27, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This from the AP:

The Boston Red Sox have outfield depth after completing a trade with the Atlanta Braves for center fielder Mark Kotsay.

The Red Sox, in a tight pennant race, acquired Kotsay on Wednesday, only one day after placing J.D. Drew on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

The 32-year-old Kotsay hit .289 with six home runs and 37 runs batted in 88 games with the Braves. The Braves acquired minor-league outfielder Luis Sumoza in the deal.

The 20-year-old Sumoza hit .301 in 51 games for Class A Lowell of the New York-Penn League this season.

Good move for them to get some outfield depth, I guess it would make no sense for us to make that move, being we refuse to move Giambi from the 5th hole.

  2. Rubin August 27th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Ok, this is not cool. We arent making the playoffs, and now we definiately arent.

  3. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef] August 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

lol “great” pickup by the suxs

the man hasn’t hit in like 8 games. I doubt this will cushion there lead.

  4. Garrett August 27th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

    He’s garbage, who cares.

  5. geO [Mickie James Roast Beef] August 27th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

    Richie Sexson = Mark Kotsay

  6. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

    “Richie Sexson = Mark Kotsay”

Different types of players. Better analogy:

    Melky Cabrera = Mark Kotsay

  7. Mr. Exceptional August 27th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Sorry guys but Kotsay is a great defender. The Sox pick up another gamer. Something the Yankees sorely needed.

It just goes to show that the Sox are in it to win it and the Yankees are playing out the string.

What exactly was Cashman’s plan coming into this season?

  8. frits August 27th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

wonder if this is somehow girardi’s fault?

  9. Aaron August 27th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Kotsay will give them a solid player to cover for Drew until he returns on 9/2. It’s not a huge move, but it’s better then the Sox having to play some AAA scrub or have Crisp and Ellsbury in the line up every night.

It’s a good move even though it’s not a big move.

  10. frits August 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    wow, mr. exceptional, another “gamer”!

can you pls. link his stat page so i can check out his gamer quotient? i’m looking at other stats like OBP, AVG, SLG, etc., but I don’t see anything about him being a “gamer”…

  11. darkmoonfire August 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

So, there are still deals out there to be made. However, Brian Cashman gives every impression of being a man who will make do with what we have and try (and likely fail again) to make good deals in the offseason.

Brian Cashman has conceded the season. He’s not trying to improve the club not this year, not any more.

  12. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Who is our gamer, Giambi………hell he can’t even play defense…..

  13. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Hey Theo is a free agent sign Theo…

  14. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

“i’m looking at other stats like OBP, AVG, SLG, etc., but I don’t see anything about him being a “gamer”…”

Check the next page. It’s right there with the Intangibles and Professionalism stats.

  15. Kermit August 27th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

    Kotsay has an Edge.

    Or maybe it’s a Taurus.

  16. frankiedue August 27th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

why didn’t the yankees block this?

  17. raymagnetic August 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Well after Cashman got Xavier Nady and Marte essentially for an unproven AA minor leaguer what else should he have done? Yep Mark Kotsay is the difference between the Sox winning or not winning a ring. Stupid Cashman.

    Mr. Exceptional,

Cashman’s plan was to lose Wang and Joba and Hughes and Posada and Matsui and then watch his team score 200 less runs than last year. I would say his plan has worked out brilliant thus far.

  18. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

    frankiedue:

Because we probably would have got him, but there is no room in our line-up, we have Giambi..

  19. mel August 27th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

    darkmoonfire,

Who’re you going to pick up? They have players. The only one that you need to get rid of is Giambi. But I doubt you’ll find a decent 1B on the scrap pile. And even if you could, they seemed determined to let Giambi serve out his term.

I can’t see how you can blame Cashman for the failures of the players.

He got them help and they’ve done nothing with it.

Not really talking about the pitching, but I can’t see trading guys for the likes of Washburn and Rogers.

  20. Bronx Jeers August 27th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

At least they’re making moves trying to make the playoffs.

Anything goes in that tournament and the Sox know that well. They’re not afraid of the Angels.

  21. rconn23 August 27th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Kotsay is a decent hitter and certainly a plus defender. I’d take him right now to get Damon out of CF and back to LF.

  22. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

    frankiedue:

Because he would have to play CF or RF, you not aloud to catch the ball on a fly in NY only in LF you can do that…

  23. Nick in SF August 27th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

We shouldn’t be afraid of the Angels either. They can’t hurt you when you’re watching on TV.

  24. The Other Phil August 27th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    rconn23:
Where do you play Nady then? The Yanks have a glut of OFs already. Someone already has to be the odd man out if Matsui is going to DH the rest of the year, which made the decision to send Melky down that much easier (though way too late)…

  25. stuart August 27th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

rconn23 yea kotsay a big contract ,deteriorating skills, old.. shrewd move get him.. maybe we can get Eric Chavez also.

39 RBI’s for Kotsay in 100 + games sounds like a real winner, also his continues back injuries, yea we should get him for sure.

    NO..

  26. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

“I can’t see how you can blame Cashman for the failures of the players.”

Generally agree. You can, however, blame him for the misguided notion that three rookie pitchers would make significant contributions to the 2008 cause.

  27. Forntoso August 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Cashman has mailed it in just like Hank, apparently.

No other reason not to block this and Byrd.

  28. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    Nick in SF:

    LOL

  29. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

    stuart:

Can he play 1st, I’d take him back and all our G-man.

  30. GreenBeret7 August 27th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

And, what would the Yankees do with Kotsay? He cost Boston a young position player, and, for that they get to claim a “gamer” who can’t stay in the game because of injuries. He’s a decent outfielder that can’t hit for squat. According to those that have a need to cry about everything, anyone that Boston picks up is a gamer. How far has the Ellsbury stock fallen, huh? Now, even Kotsay is the answer.

  31. mel August 27th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

I don’t know, “Angels in the Outfield” makes the eyes bleed.

  32. mel August 27th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Kotsay’s the wild-eyed red haired guy right? Should fit right in.

  33. stuart August 27th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

yea frd; miny with blackburn, slowey, and the other rookie are really hurting in Minny. i forgot they have the old guy Liriana at about 24 also.

The players have not done there job it is that simple.. this team old and creaky has enough talent to make the playoffs but; arod, jeter, giambi, pettitte, and others have not done ther JOB.

BRAINIACS how hard is this to comprehend???

arod and giambi 225 combined with RISp, give me a break..

Cano with his hero complex at 265, give me a break…

Jeter slugging like a woosie SS, give me a break.. the guy is 34 not 42…..

  34. RalphieD August 27th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

3 ip 4 k’s 0er for marshall today in the GCL

  35. Nick in SF August 27th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

I hope they play Kotsay tonight! We can settle this quickly.

Ponson vs. Kotsay for all the marbles!

I mean, Ponson vs. Kotsay to get back to 5 games behind the Sox!

  36. The Other Phil August 27th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

    Fredo:
It was a stretch, for sure, but I don’t disagree with going with the kids rather than overspending on questionable starters. He could have found a better 4/5 for sure, but the cost to get a frontline guy was way too high. Besides, when you look at a rotation of Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Hughes, Kennedy (w/ Joba coming to the party later), it’s a good rotation that really went with the kids at 4/5. Depth was an issue, but you can’t figure that Wang and Hughes would go down for significant amounts of time and that IPK would be SUCH a disappointment.

Lack of depth is Cash’s fault, but way too many games have been lost by hitting, not pitching. How many good starts did the Yanks squander by hitting poorly? Too many to count.

  37. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    GreenBeret7:

I don’t want any other player’s at this point, but please move Giambi…………..

  38. Rich August 27th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

“Cashman’s plan was to lose Wang and Joba and Hughes and Posada and Matsui and then watch his team score 200 less runs than last year. I would say his plan has worked out brilliant thus far.”

no apparently his plan was to field a bunch of old men who are susceptible to injuries and pitch a bunch of unproven rookies who are susceptible to getting raked upon. cash cant predict the future but he should have anticipated the possibility of the present scenario.

  39. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

“rconn23 yea kotsay a big contract ,deteriorating skills, old.. shrewd move get him..”

Kotsay’s contract is up at the end of the year. His ’08 salary is $8M, but the A’s are paying $5M of it. Cost Boston next to nothing.

Still, no reason for the Yankees to block. He’d be the best defensive CF the Yanks had since Bernie’s salad days, but he’s not a good bat and he’s simply not good enough to impact the Yankees fortunes one way or another. Boston’s only going to use as a 4th OF as is.

  40. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

The best moves the Sux made was bringing up kids and giving them a shot, it worked out well for a few…

We just need to bench Giambi.

  41. Mike Stanley August 27th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

How is this not a good move? It helps them shore up the OF while Drew is down.

From Ken Rosenthal on foxsports.com …

Kotsay, who turns 33 on Dec. 2, has been hot in August, posting an .856 on-base/slugging percentage, his highest of any month this season.

Boston assumes the balance of his $8 million salary, which would amount to slightly more than $1.5 million.

The Braves did not plan to offer salary arbitration to Kotsay, who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Kotsay missed all of June due to a lower back strain, but since then has appeared in 40 of the Braves’ 48 games.

For the season, he is batting .289 with a .338 on-base percentage, six home runs and 37 RBIs in 344 plate appearances.

  42. Nick in SF August 27th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

stuart, you’re forgetting that the Twins had Livan, who has been their MVP this season — up until they DFA’d him.

  43. mel August 27th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

    RalphieD,

Don’t be fooled. It’s a mirage. The draft was a total bust.

  44. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

    T.O.P

I agree with you. Cashman was right not to make that deal. I do think he could have grabbed up a low end innings eating type or two (Say a Kyle Lohse or someone like that) to help offset A) the innings threshold some guys were on and B) the possibility of them not being ready for prime time.

Also agree on the depth. No excuse for not having a better bench.

  45. RalphieD August 27th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    via Mark Ashmore

“Austin Jackson and Kevin Russo are the first Yankees prospects confirmed to be participating in the Arizona Fall League this year. They’ll be playing for the Peoria Javelinas.

The Yankees still have to announce four pitchers and one infielder who will be playing as well.”

good for a jax (or A-jack)…hope he does well…any thoughts on who the pitchers and infielder could be?

  46. Bronx Jeers August 27th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

The Angels have definitely hurt me while watching them on TV.

    Deep personal wounds.

Bubba vs Sheffield in the right center gap. That I’ll carry around for a while.

  47. Doreen August 27th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Man – You guys are tough. Getting Nady and Marte was not an effort by Cashman to make improvements? Getting rid of Farnsworth and acquiring Pudge was not an effort by Cashman to give his team a better chance? Look, he did his work. And at the time those deals were made, they got ringing endorsements from all around. Pudge hasn’t hit well – is that Cashman’s fault? Marte hasn’t had the impact it was hoped he’d have, at least so far, but he’ll be around next season and with a fresh start in a fresh season, who knows -plus his last appearance was pretty decent. Nady has been everything that was expected.

It gets so monotonous that every move every other team makes is “the” move, while every move that Cashman makes is awful.

I didn’t like the make-up of the bench at the beginning of the season. Didn’t like Ensberg (though he seemed nice enough) and didn’t like Duncan. I understood what Cash was trying to do, but I though in the long run holding on to Mientkiewicz was a better alternative to Ensberg. Don’t know exactly why Betemit is still here, but I know when he first arrived he helped win a couple of games.

Cash ain’t perfect (no GM is), but he’s not as bad as I’ve read here.

  48. stuart August 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

yea getting Kotsay is the key to winning it all..

His speed would especially be a benefit, he has 2 Sb’s for the year.

You clowns just pick at everything and want every piece of crap out there and constantly look for solutions that do not exist.

Mark K0tsay is a bad Johny Damon.. Damon throws like a girl but Kotsay could not hold his jock strap.. Look at crisps #’s, look at Elsbury’s #’s a supposed super star in the making, that is funny.

Just because gammons and some other hacks say it does not make it true… the sux win because they battle 27 outs and find a way and that is the reason why the yanks lose.. there players are unclutch and find a way not to get the job done..

yea let’s get washbum also he is over the hill piece of crap just like kotsay, hey let’s get millwood also say they can have the trifecta…

  49. TKinDC August 27th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I’m trying to put together an appropriate playlist to listen to during this evening’s game with the sound off – other than Mozart’s requiem, depeche mode, and the cure I am a little at a loss for material – any ideas?

I mean if we aren’t going to sign Mark F. Kotsay, what is the point?

  50. you gotta have faith August 27th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

how can people say that cash has done nothing for us this year??
HELLO, he got us what we needed to push foward, he got us a lefty for the bullpen, he got us a bat in the outfield, and he got us an all star catcher.

what the heck do you want him to do? its not his fault that really only nady has done what was adverstized.

the only thing that he didnt do was get us a decent starting pitcher, but hey the way the offense have been does that even matter?

cashman did what he needed to do to help the team for THIS year, it just didnt work out, plain and simple

  51. TKinDC August 27th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

“They’ll be playing for the Peoria Javelinas.”

    Peoria? was Siberia booked? :)

  52. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

“Getting Nady and Marte was not an effort by Cashman to make improvements?”

It was and it was a very good deal.

“Getting rid of Farnsworth and acquiring Pudge was not an effort by Cashman to give his team a better chance?”

It was, but it hasn’t. Deal was fine, but I don’t think people around here were prepared for how lousy a player Pudge has become over the past 2-3 seasons.

“Cash ain’t perfect (no GM is), but he’s not as bad as I’ve read here.”

Nope he isn’t. He’s not close to being the best but he’s not close to being the worst either. All GM’s have hits and misses.

  53. Laura - Too depressed to come up with something witty to say! August 27th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

“Bubba vs Sheffield in the right center gap. That I’ll carry around for a while.”

This was the turning point of that game. Their collison in the outfield did something to the Yankees. After that, they played that game like they knew they couldn’t win it. It’s funny how little things can affect teams or change the momentum of a game.

  54. stuart August 27th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

yea Livan Hernandez another favorite of many of our shrewd posters..

He would fit in on the yanks; he is old, skills deteriorating, overpaid, hell yea they should get him he is a overpriced SIdney ponson.

all the scholars in this site new the young itchers would not work out it never does just ask the Twins or the Marlins or many other teams..

these psoters are spoiled 18 year olds who have no clue.

I have a 13 yr old daughter since she was born the yanks have never not made the playoffs, that is amazing.

when I was a kid the Yanks stunk, I was born in the 60′s, losers grow up….

  57. Mike Stanley August 27th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Just to clarify, I never said Kotsay was someone the Yanks should have picked up, just that it’s a solid move for Boston.

  58. raymagnetic August 27th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Rich are you saying you wanted Posada and A-Rod gone last year and Matsui and Damon dealt?

Cashman started the year with 3 pitchers in the rotation who could give you at least 175ip’s and the two rookies. They started the year with a much more experienced rotation than the Rays and the Twins. Sure Cashman could have predicted everyone would be ineffective and hurt, but nobody is that much of a psychic.

  59. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

No, he didn’t. He got Pudge Rodriguez instead.

also in 2006 the sux finished in third place in our division, did they not?

what did they do in 2007? does anyone remember? i cant remember i think i cut that memory from my brain, its in the garbage along with 2004 :)

  62. Timothy Clougher August 27th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Yeah and leaving Giambi in the 5th hole of the line-up isn’t a glaring problem.

Maybe the GM should give Joe G a call and say ‘BENCH GIAMBI, HIS OFFENSE SUCKS, so he offers no upside, HIS DEFENSE is HORRIBLE.

    Maybe that would help.

  63. TKinDC August 27th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It’s not like the Sox have had an easy season.
Ellsbury – awful at the plate
    Coco – see Ellsbury
Ortiz – lost for almost two months and came back to have Manny traded
Lowell has been banged up all year
Varitek has been close to an auto-out all season (similar to Arod in the clutch)
Beckett started the year on the DL, has had this elbow injury, and has been decent all season
The Sox got less from Buchholz than you got from Hughes/Kennedy except for innings.
The Sox bullpen outside of Papelbon has been anything but consistent.

  65. you gotta have faith August 27th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

  69. GreenBeret7 August 27th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

So, Mel…How was this year’s draft a total bust? Because NYY didn’t sign their top pick? If you had been paying attention, you’ll notice that the Pirates and KC haven’t been able to sign their top picks in Alverez and Holsmer, respectively. There is one common denominator…Scott Boras. It’s my belief that Boras is trying to kill the FA draft system. If he gets these two players and Cole declared FA, he’ll do just that.

Is it because one of the top players that NYY drafted might need surgery? So what. NYY have been taking those types of talents for a few years, because they fell to them. It’s the only way they can get top of the line draft picks.

  70. Fredo Corleone August 27th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

“i know where you are going, but when we got pudge did you think that he would hit as poorly as he’s hitting?? if you did then good for you, you didnt set yourself up for dissappointment.”

That’s true. I didn’t. Said it at the time, the trade made sense but the Pudge they are getting is the palest possible comparison to what he was in his salad days. He’s a miserable offensive player, posting OBP below .300 in ’05 and ’07 and has been on the below average side of OPS+ for the past 6 years. No, I did not expect him to hit. His defensive skills are fast disappearing too. Molina runs circles arounf him defensiively at this point.

  71. raymagnetic August 27th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Oh, Green Beret. I’m so disappointed. You need to calibrate your sarcasm meter.

  74. GreenBeret7 August 27th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Injuries to what older guys, Rich? You mean Hughes and Kennedy? Pettitte and Mussina have been healthy all season. Damon’s was an ingame freak arm injury. Rodriguez and Jeter had the same injury that a multitude of you players have suffered this season. Matsui’s injury is not necessarily an age related injury. Posada’s may or may not be. It’s not an injury that relegated to only the older players…but, please, do rant on…it’s entertaining.

My apologies, Mel. I saw Ralphy’s name on your response, but, never saw his origional remark.

Seriously, it is beyond to think that Cash:
A: didn’t do anything to help the team
B: should block all other possible deals by other teams, especially if the move makes no sense for the Yankees.

So Boston got Kotsay? Good for them. If he works out for them, good for them. So many people were up in arms when Boston got Gagne and how did that work out? And as it’s been mentioned tons of times already, where exactly would Kotsay fit into the team besides being another player on the bench? As much as we’d like it to happen, JG is not benching Giambi so who do you remove: Abreu, Damon or Nady? Answer: NONE OF THEM. Kotsay has no role so a block for blocking sake is just dumb.

    Sheesh.
