Breaking news: Beckett to miss next start

August
28

Josh Beckett will not start for Boston tomorrow. He is instead being sent to see Dr. James Andrews. Beckett has been out because of an elbow problem that has apparently not improved.

Bad news for the Red Sox means good news for the Yankees.

Is Peter Gammons still predicting a hall of fame career for Joshie?

  2. Doreen

This does not surprise me. I wonder what Dr. Andrews will find, though.

  3. radnom

    Tommu John. Write it down.

  4. DVAB

Kewl Beans…maybe his career is over and he can resume his position as Chief Executive A-Hole of the Redneck Nation !

  5. Jamal G.

Funny, I wonder what some would have said if Joe Girardi had said that Joba felt some discomfort after “sleeping on his arm”, then it turned out Joba needed to go see Dr. Andrews.

  6. Jon G

Wow, too bad it didn’t happen about the same time Wang went down.

The lack of clutch hitting is clearly glaring. But there’s got to be some kind of psychological influence there from losing our number 1 and Joba, which has easily cost us 6 or 7 wins. I mean, it’s inspiring to see your number 1 our there, and at the same time, a psychological let down to see their replacement getting hit all over the place.

Thoughts? Has anybody calculated the specific number estimate of where we’d be if Wang and Joba hadn’t been replaced by Ponson and Rasner?

  7. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

He’ll be fine, besides he’s going to see this guy

  8. A-Rod: 2008's Least Valuable Player

It’s not like we can take advantage of it this season. Maybe next season.

But anyhow, couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  9. AZ Four

LOL, I just saw SNY has an exclusive interview with Hank.

How did the owner of the Yankees give an interview to his rival network?

    That’s awesome.

  10. Jeter Girl

Ha! This day just keeps gettin’ better and better. Phil Hughes shaved a few runs off his ERA in SWB last night…..Sept. call up maybe?

  11. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

Deal Giambi as soon as you can don’t buy into the hype ! get value back while you can !

  12. Jeter2007

this doesn’t mean JACK if we can’t beat wakefield & byrd, don’t even mention matsuzaka & lester

  13. E-Man

“Funny, I wonder what some would have said if Joe Girardi had said that Joba felt some discomfort after “sleeping on his arm”, then it turned out Joba needed to go see Dr. Andrews.”

    I know.

They would have asked Joba and he would have said something different.

    Girardi would still look clueless.

  14. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

I wonder how much it would take to bribe Dr. Andrews to put in a rubber band instead if Beckett needs Tommy John surgery?

    ;)

Seriously, I could care less. The guy is jerk, but I don’t like to see any players hurt and needing surgery. Plus, it will mean increased need for the RS to go after starting pitching as well. CC, Burnett, Sheets all might have gotten a raise from this news.

  15. Christine

I wish I could get excited about Boston’s misfortune (and I hope Josh is alright as I do not wish any ill will towards him), but the Yankees have not taken advantage of any team’s injuries. It is just a bump in the road for Boston – they will be fine.

  16. dan 771

send giambi to the dodgers or d’backs and let him be their DH

he would be much better out west

  17. DFox

Did anyone else here get a kick out of how Derek Jeter answered Jim Jones’ dumb question? It was fregin’ hilarious. He should answer every single dumb question she asks like he did today.

You’re all class. Wish for him to lose the rest of his starts. Wish for him to be kidnapped by gypsies. But, hoping for an injury, and a career ending injury, is classless, stupid in infantile. Congratulations…you’re all three.

  19. GreenBeret7

    ***and infantile***

  20. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Of course Giambi’s hitting that HR and game winning single will keep him in the lineup now till the end of time.

  21. Jeter2007

um ok, are there quotes ?

  22. Joe from Long Island

This means that the Sox will mount an all-out push for CC this winter.

If Beckett has TJ surgery – and that’s what it’s sounding like if it’s not getting better and he’s going to the master – he’s out for all of next year. No way the Sox start the season with DiceK as the No. 1, followed by Wakefield, Lester, Masterson and Laptop.

  23. SJ44

Wishing someone gets hurt is about as dumb as you can act.

Really, what’s the point of that? To see how stupid you can sound.

For those who believe in it, its also bad karma.

Its not exactly like the Yankees haven’t been hit with some severe injuries.

I don’t care how much you may hate a player you don’t even know, wishing for the player to be injuries makes you sound and look like an ass.

  24. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

DFox, I missed the Jeter/ Kim interview. What did he say?

I rarely bother to watch any post game stuff anymore. They say pretty much the same thing, then tip their hats…

  25. Sea Net

    CC
    Dice-K
    Lester
    Wakefield
    Bowden/Buchholz

    And in 2010

    Sabathia
    Beckett
    Dice-K
    Lester
    Bowden/Buchholz

All under 30 and 4 of them can be considered aces. Yikes!

Hal cannot under any circumstances allow CC to go to Boston.

  26. S.A.-Can the Yanks win a game? Please? This offense is still offensive.

Well, that sucks for him. Not a fan of his but injuries are not something to joke about and take joy in.

Anyways, the Yankees need to win games. That’s it

  27. AJ YANKS

Nady started the rally and Pudge forced Francona to bring in Papelbon.

    Props to the new kids.

  28. Nick in SF

“I think my happiness here lies in totally ignoring Shecky Green on the west coast. Though if I were a coast away I’m sure I could be pretty blase about the team on the other coast and use every opportunity to make some weak joke.”

Really, trisha? Now I’m the alpha and omega of your so-called happiness here? How smart is that?

How about this: If you want to bizarrely question my level of enthusiasm for the Yankees as I sit in front of my TV on a Thursday morning on a beautiful cloudless day in San Francisco when I could have done a number of other things, some profitable, please at least do so by name.

And if you have a baseball-related complaint about anything I say or have said, please go ahead and make it.

    Otherwise, everyone’s a critic.

  29. Jack Nicolson

I hope they’ll say “Amputation Required”

  30. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

    SELL WHAT YOU CAN !

Ok now I’m outs. Seriously stop believing the hype they died last night at 10:24 P.M.

Excellent point. If Beckett is lost for any of next season, that makes the Sox big players for CC.

All I know is, this blog would be a pretty boring place without Nick in SF.

Without question, the funniest poster on the blog. He keeps it light and funny.

Something all of us need to do more of from time to time.

Nick, keep fightin’ the good fight.

At the game the other night, I actually showed one of my guests (the one with a sense of humor) some of your posts.

He was cracking up the entire night!

Keep posting and keep havin’ fun.

  34. Yankee1010

Anybody else getting a kick out of the poster who wants Giambi traded to the Dodgers so he can be their DH?

  35. Andrea

I feel it’s time to think about the immortal words of Mariano Duncan:

“We play today, we win today.”

  36. James (oh sweet jesus...pavano is pitching)

    HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!

THE SUN HAS COME OUT AGAIN!

If Josh Beckett were to have TJ he would be out all of next year…and then working his way back at the begining od 2010 in all likely hood…and who knows how effective he would be in his first years back.

But this also could be a Joba Chamberlain deal, where the team tells him to go Dr.James Andrews to make sure everything is all right..not to ask how bad it is!

  37. Andrea

Yankee 1010: I couldn’t figure out if that was a joke or not.

Neither is Beckett’s arm, but it doesn’t look good!

  39. SJ44

    Doreen,

They may not be “dead” yet. But, they are in the type of coma that absent a miracle drug, will soon cause the plug to be pulled.

It was a nice win today. However, with 3/5th’s of the rotation comprising of Ponson, Rasner and Pavano, a dead offense, and a team that has SERIOUS problems winning series against over .500 teams, it ain’t lookin’ good.

  40. Fran

Doreen -you’re right. As long as the Yankees are mathematically alive, there is always hope.

I told Terry I was a liar. He kept saying he wasn’t too bad, but kept pushing his starts back. Now is he going to see Andrews. I wonder if the Boston papers are ripping him for not telling the truth.

  43. Jeter2007

i thought this team had problems beating

  44. Yankee1010

He listed both the Dodgers and D’Backs. Maybe it’s a joke. Curious comedic value if it is.

  45. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

Know what? Chien Ming Wang > Josh Beckett.

Yeah I said it. And as of now, it’s 100% true, too. Wang has never had a bad season, Josh has yet to have back to back good ones in the AL. Give me Wang’s consistency over “TEH ACE!!!!1!!” anyday.

  46. Joe from Long Island

None of us knows, obviously, what is going to happen with Beckett. What I think we can all bank on is that the price of CC, AJ, Sheets, and any other quality starting pitcher hitting the market just went up. Those three guys, especially, are going to make out like bandits. Nothing like a bidding war between the Yankees and Red Sox to make the players and their agents smile.

  47. Mr. Exceptional

How is it the schedule makers have the final match up between the Yankees and Red Sox at the stadium today, when the Yankees play the last three games at Fenway.

Shouldn’t it really be the other way around. What greater way to close it out then the final game of the season between the Sox and Yankees at the stadium.

    These schedules always perplex me.

Fortunately, we would still have the edge, CC is black, why would he want to play in the most racist sports city in America? Especially with him being more of a West Coast guy anyway.

  50. Nick in SF

Thanks, SJ44, I appreciate it. I’m glad something I said on here could entertain your game buddy, especially since there’s a pretty fair chance the product on the field wasn’t doing the job.

Also, I meant to say this a while ago, I appreciate the integrity you’ve shown in admitting you were wrong about Moose at the beginning of the season, when he admittedly looked close to finished. We all say things that are wrong, but we don’t all admit it.

Regarading Moose, a few people suggested that he be traded to a ‘contender’ before Sept. 1. I think the chances of this happening are zip, but to that 1% chance I say: NO. Would we want this so-called creature of habit pitching exciting games in another ballpark and perhaps enjoying it? Keep the Moose in pinstripes.

  51. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

OOps that should be I told ya Terry was a liar.

  52. SJ44

    Exactly Joe.

You have 4 major market teams, the Yankees and Mets, Red Sox and Dodgers with pitching needs and money coming off the books.

CC will set the price and guys like Sheets and Burnett will get more money than they ever could have hoped for at the start of this season.

  53. Doreen

Just joshin’ guys – that Monty Python phrase is just stuck in my head. I’m giddy with unrealistic hope. Or white wine. Whichever.

I know the facts, I know they can’t win with 3/5 of the rotation being Ponson, Pavano and ?. But I thought David Cone was right – IF – big, big IF – they can beat Halliday and Burnett, we could have a right to dream a little longer. If not…..

Hey, SJ44 – IS there a miracle drug??????

  54. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

However, it would also make them players for Burnett come to think of it, and I’m sure he’d rather play for them than us, that way he still gets to face us. *sigh*

  55. Doreen

I have this fear that all the money coming off the books is going to right back on the books for the same type of contracts that got the Yankees into deep do-do this time around. It’s a vicious cycle, unless a team is willing to forego the postseason for a few consecutive years, barring luck.

  56. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Just watching the end of the game, the fans stayed there for a long time after it was over.

  57. nyyfaninlaaland

Nick – another Left Coaster getting your back.

Trisha, I think you took too much from his “whole brain” comment. He was just being a fan, and recognizes that Boston’s record is more an issue than the ChiSox, since they could get in as the Central champs, while we must pass either Boston or Tampa to have a shot, and the Sox are closer.

Plus he’s one of the continuing hopeful here – like you. He’s on your side.

And some of his comments are funny. Better him than the moaning and woe we have to wade through here.

  58. kasey

nick in sf kills me! i didn’t “read” trisha’s “post,” per se, but nick is one of few posters whose posts i will stop to read every time simply because his name is attached.

the red sox have been fine without beckett the last few weeks. i don’t see what his injury does to them except cost them a legitimate shot at the world series. the yankees don’t scare anybody right now, nor should they.

  59. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Wow watching the recap, Dusty was so far off the baseline!! Don’t the umps watch the play?

  60. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

    “IS there a miracle drug??????”

Sure, extra dry martinis or Tequilla straight up.

  61. Mr. Exceptional

If I were the Yankees I wouldn’t go after Burnett.

He seems like one of those players that only steps it up when he faces the Yankees.

He knows that if he puts up a going showing against the Yankees they’ll come knocking for him when he’s a free agent. He’ll get the big bucks and then lose any motivation to be a big game pitcher.

We’ve seen this before. No team can offer more money then the Yankees so it behooves players to step up there game against them in hopes of snaring a big contract. Then they do and become complacent.

I would think very long and hard before going after Burnett.

  62. SJ44

    Nick,

No worries. I have no problems admitting I was wrong about Moose.

He’s not going anywhere. Moose is a creature of habit and, even in these dark times, loves playing for the Yankees and wouldn’t approve a trade. Even to a contender.

He is a very interesting guy. The last year or so, he’s been a great help to some of the younger players on the team. That’s something he shied away from earlier in his Yankee career.

Some guys do it to score points and try in an attempt to get a new deal. There are a few guys on this year’s team (not mentioning any names) who are doing that now.

Its superficial BS and they aren’t fooling anybody with that act.

Moose is genuine about it. I think he is at the place in his career where he is both comfortable and proud of his accomplishments and has no problems imparting the knowledge he has built up over the years to those seeking it.

Personally, I hope he comes back next year. I think he has certainly earned a one year deal and I believe he won’t have any problems going year to year with the Yankees.

One year, 12 million with incentives is what I would offer him. He deserves it, IMO.

I also believe with the way he has now changed his pitching approach, he can pitch successfully (if he wants) for another 2-3 years.

Physically, he’s in great shape. He’s one of the best athletes on the team, even at 39 years old.

  63. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Few weeks? He missed two starts.

  64. COL 88

I want CC, Sheets, Tex, and Manny.

  65. SJ44

    Doreen,

Yes. Its Sambuca. Lots and lots of Sambuca.

It may not help get the Yankees into the playoffs but, it gives the type of buzz to not make it hurt so much.

This is why I don’t get what the Twins did in trading Santana in the off-season (when you had to figure Yanks and Sox and other teams would be desperate in July) and why Santana signed with the Mets instead of waiting until he hit the open market. With no offense to any of the pitchers approaching free agency, Santana would have been the class of this years class.

But also, Nick, I wouldn’t be opposed to letting Moose go elsewhere to get a shot at a ring if he wanted. He deserves that.

What did I miss? How was the game? Giambi with all the ribbies of the bench, huh? You can’t make this stuff up.

I hate Josh, but I don’t wish him harm. I read somewhere that they think it’s nerve damage something that screamed surgery, but then the Sox kept saying he was going to pitch and pushing it back.

I mean, you gotta know something’s wrong, no? You don’t get this from sleeping the wrong way.

  72. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit.

I heard the Beckett announcement on NESN a while ago. I was crushed. :)

And he was announced for Friday’s game, so there you go with managers keeping things back!

They have a funky rotation the next three days. Hopefully the Chisox can have their way with them and help us out.

    Time to actually enjoy dinner!

Maybe Santana knows his arm is starting to decline and was afraid to wait through the season.

  74. SJ44

    CC, Tex, Manny and Sheets.

About 500 million in guaranteed money for those guys alone.

    Not going to happen.

    Doreen,

Its a legitimate fear because they have a lot of holes to fill and very few guys in the minors ready to fill them.

That’s the “fix” some in the organization will pitch. Its the wrong way to go.

They are going to have to be creative this off-season in filling some of the holes.

They can’t do it all with free agency. If they do, you are correct, they are just making the same mistakes they made in the past. Only difference will be, the names will be different.

The results, or lack of them, will be the same.

  75. COL 88

Hank is keeping an eye on CC and AJ Burnett

The Baby Boss says the two pitchers will be on everyone’s radar this offseason, but that the Yankees in particular will be keying in on how each of their arms hold up after the regular season concludes.

“Everybody is looking at Sabathia and Burnett, not just us,” Steinbrenner said Thursday. “We’ll see. I mean, our main concern is, are their arms going to be okay after this season?”

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/08/28/2008-08-28_hank_steinbrenner_keeping_his_eye_on_cc_.html

  76. Doreen

Ah, so the drugs are for me! Okay. I love Sambuca – especially in espresso, but that might be counterproductive. I like Tequila, too, but mainly in margaritas. So, Tequila for weekend games, and Sambuca for weeknight games. I think I can do that. Sure.

    Why that lying Tito.

  78. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

SJ – great post about Moose. I always knew he was too intelligent to be able to resist a little “teaching.” He is indeed a terrific athelte, has been the best fielding pitcher in the AL for the majority of his career, imo, and has gotten robbed in Gold Glove voting more times than I care to remember.

In light of all this, I don’t know if he’s done it this year, but why would Michael Kay always rip Moose in the past saying he doesn’t work out/train hard enough, etc? Seems like every time I look Moose is making another strong play, so I never understood where Kay was coming from with these knocks on his physical fitness.

  79. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Wow who asked the stupid question if he would have used Jason as a ph to lead off the inning. WHat?!!

  80. SJ44

    Josh,

A pitcher is one visit to Dr. Andrews away from his career changing forever.

When you have the chance to sign a guaranteed 137 million dollar deal, you don’t wait. You sign it.

If not, and an injury takes place, you will never again have a chance to make that kind of cash.

  81. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

BBB- It all comes down to Mike not wanting to talk to Kay after he lost the perfect game. Mike probably got snippy, but who could blame him? It hurt Kay’s feels still to this day.

  82. mel

    So how was the game?

  83. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

That’s interesting, Hank hasn’t said anything about Sheets? I would rather have Sheets over Burnett. They’re both good pitchers but injury prone, but Sheets seems to have a great attitude where Burnett comes off as a bit of an ogre PLUS his heart and drive have been oft-questioned in the past, do we really need any more players who are questionable in that regard? I thought we were trying to rid the team of guys like that, not add more.

  89. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

Jennifer – ha, Kay is sometimes more sensitive than the 3 or 4 most reactionary Lohud bloggers combined! I hope he has at least shut up about it this year. His “haterade” commentary used to render Moose’s starts damn near unwatchable on YES. I’ve been away from NJ this season, so I’ve listened to most of the games on MLB audio, but remembering some things Kay has said in the past, he better have done some SERIOUS crow-eating about Mike this year!

  90. G. Love

I also can’t imagine CC going to Boston. It’s just known as the most racist town in baseball. Maybe the Celtics winning has softened that stance, but you hear that moniker often when it comes to Boston.

I doubt CC would want to be the highest paid pitcher in Boston history and deal with that group when he struggles. In NY when you suck, we boo and tell you “you suck”. In Boston, it’s been known to get ugly for minority players.

I think it’s between the Yankees and the all the Cali teams excluding San Diego.

CC’s had it leaked to the press a few times now that he’s interested in SF and as much as we all think they would never do that after Zito, you never know. CC with Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez with Zito #5 would be a powerhouse rotation and revive the Giants.

It’s why I think we won’t get CC and will also get outbid by another team in the end.

In all these free agent pitcher bonanza’s there is always that one team that bids so high even the Yankees won’t go there. Kevin Brown, Zito, etc. These are guys at the time they were FA’s we could have signed and needed but didn’t because the dollars got insane.

That’s going to happen with CC.

It’s why I wanted to trade for Johan. We’d have locked up and wouldn’t have to deal with a crazy owner just going nuts with the contract.

If the Yankees go 6 years at 20 million for CC and another owner bumps it up to 7 years at 22 million…I just don’t see the Yankees going that deep into it. They know all the data about long term pitcher contracts.

If Beckett gets TJ surgery, I can see the Red Sox chasing AJ “noted Yankee killer” Burnett who would probably be joining Beckett on the DL by May. For some reason, I think AJ in Boston would turn out like Matt Clement in Boston.

Hank Steinbrenner needs to put clamp on his tongue. He’s bordering on tampering when talking about other players under contract.

  92. randy l

the lesson with mussina is that if a stubborn veteran star is told to change or he’s not going to play then that veteran may change his ways for the better.

mussina was told to pitch inside or he wasn’t going to pitch. just making a small change can change everything. mussina is now a valuable player for the team.

that’s a key role of coaching and managing. there are other players on the team who should given similar ultimatums. arod for one. either shorten up the swing in key late inning situations with runners in scoring position or get pinch hit for by someone who can.

cano should be told to learn to bunt well or have the back up second baseman replace him in those situations. gardner should be told to learn how to bunt or go back to triple a. these shouldn’t be suggestions .

they should be ultimatums. do it or else.

it worked with moose, and may just get him in the hall of fame.

  93. Angel - Tales told by idiots, full of sound & fury, signifying nothing

    Heh, BBB.

Was your name today a reverse jinx attempt for Giambi, lol?

  94. Erik

Don’t give a damn what bad news for the Sox means for the Yankees, the man’s injured and some people are being awful insensitive.

  95. SJ44

Michael Kay and Moose had words several years ago over something Kay said on the air about him. Since that time, their relationship has been “frosty” at best.

Kay is also a guy who likes to see what side of the fence is best to be on in the Yankee Universe.

At the start of the year, most people in the Yankee Heirarchy figured Moose would be the guy to get bounced out of the rotation when Joba was ready to enter it.

Moose also ticked off some Yankee people when he questioned the readiness of both Hughes and Kennedy for major league rotation service.

Kay, siezing upon that and trying to score points with the Yankees, ripped the hell out of Moose after those two early Red Sox games.

Ironically, Moose was not only right about Hughes and Kennedy, he also salvaged the Yankee season (even at this stage) with his work this year.

That not only quieted his doubters in the organization, its forced Kay to do a 180 on Moose.

Moose doesn’t bite on that stuff and doesn’t give Kay the time of day.

Just one of the mini soap operas in the Yankee World.

Hank needs to keep his mouth shut on that stuff.

That could be construed as tampering and you know Selig wouldn’t think twice about popping the Yankees on a tampering charge.

Its also not his call on who they will go after in free agency and what they will pay for said players.

Sometimes, silence is golden. Hank needs to learn that when it comes to upcoming free agents.

He’s his father’s son and sometimes that’s not a good thing.

  96. Joe from Long Island

Careful, Doreen, that’s how my wife got up the courage to call me and ask me out years ago, and we can see where that led to!

I don’t want to sign every FA on the market, just a select few – like CC, AJ if CC doesn’t pan out, and maybe Milton Bradley to play LF, with NAdy in RF. CF – either Johnny or Brett; maybe Melky if he gets it together. Matt Kemp, if acquired in trade (Cano?) would do, also.

  97. GreenBeret7

Randy, as long as you’re telling what ultimatums should be handed out, maybe Jeter should learn the difference between bunting to sacrifice and bunting for hits. He clearly doesn’t know or has forgotten the difference.

Angel: It wasn’t intended to be – originally, it was just recycled ire from last night, haha – but it seems to have worked out that way so I definitely won’t be changing it now!

  99. nyyfaninlaaland

Talked about this a few days ago, but there is reason for concern about CC and Burnett – the 3500 pitch problem – and it’s interesting to hear Hank talk about watching how they finish the season. CC’s about to complete his 2nd straight season at that workload, and Burnett’s on track for his first. Sheets is an example of the issue – in jury problems immediately after reaching the same number.

At least some reason for caution when contemplating a huge long term deal. But we certainly need some help, so somebody’s getting a deal from the Yanks.

    But it sure

  100. Angel - Tales told by idiots, full of sound & fury, signifying nothing

LOL. These days we look for inspiration wherever we can get it.

*sigh* Mussina getting a ND – I’m glad they ended up winning for sure, but I want him to win 20 games so badly it kinda aches a little when I see a ND happen for him when he’s so close to it. :(

  101. nyyfaninlaaland

That’s “injury”, not “in jury”. Sounds like he had jury duty.

  102. GreenBeret7

Jesus….trading Cano for Kemp makes little sense. There are no 2nd basemen in the system ready and none available, unless you think Orlando Hudson is worth a multi-year contract for 13-15 mil a year at age 32. That’s what he’s asking from Arizona. That was before season ending surgery.

  103. Doreen

    Joe from LI -

Not to worry – I talk a great game, but I hate not being in control. :)

I think we all know the bigger name players, but who might be available to the Yankees for, say, 1B? There must also be some AAA players somewhere who are just about ready, but being block at the ML level. Is it worth it to take a chance on a CF or 1B that would fit that description? Will the Yankees be giving serious consideration to more all-around players (4-tool, at least, since 5-tool are so rare) and not just mashers?

Also, the Yankees need to get some position players for their minor league system. If not the draft, and if not Latin America or internationally, can they mine the systems of other teams?

  104. BBB (replace umps with computers, replace Giambi with Miranda)

Right on re: the 6:30 post, G. Love. When CC was with Cleveland he always said how proud he was to play for the first team to break the color barrier in the AL (Larry Doby, the pride of Paterson). I know a lot of players like to spew platitudes, but I believe CC really meant it. Boston is the complete antithesis of that both historically and today. I would be completely and utterly shocked if he went there.

I also think SF has the edge in signing him. He’s a Bay Area guy who knows Oakland won’t pay him, so across the bridge is the best case scenario. I don’t see him going to the Dodgers though, I think they can only afford him or Manny and will opt for Manny. So we would maybe be his 2nd choice after SF. Thank goodness that picture of him in a Yankee cap is floating around the interwebs to keep our hopes up all winter, at least!

Wow. So basically, in 2008, it’s Mussina 17 (plus one for the astute observation on Hughes & IPK) and Kay 0? Hah, no complaints from me there! I consider it irresponsible journalism to allow an off-air argument with a pitcher to effect a broadcaster’s commentary on that pitcher, so I’m afraid I will have to enjoy every last bit of crow that Kay is forced to eat regarding the Moose!

  106. bru

i have a very hard time believing sf will give a pitcher 5-7 years at 20 million plus a year after zito when they need a lot of bats and have zito, cain, lincecum and more.if the yankees can’t get him and or sheets they could be in some trouble because there isn’t much out there and that might put a lot of pressure on them to bring pettitte and mussina back.

  107. top of the order

Manny will not stay in LA. He wants to play in NY. If the Yankees don’t sign him, he will wind up with his pal Pedro on the Mets

“I also can’t imagine CC going to Boston. It’s just known as the most racist town in baseball. Maybe the Celtics winning has softened that stance, but you hear that moniker often when it comes to Boston.”

What’s with you guys who keep claiming Boston is a racist sports town. What is it based on? Tom Yawkey is dead. Has been for quite some time. Does it make you feel better about the Yanks chances of signing CC?
This country needs to get over BS like that. Guys like you perpetuating decades-old issues don’t help. Give it up.
